- 0:22Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coleen Witt, and today we have a
- 0:29Speaker 1: very special guest, actress, producer, director Vanessa Bell Calloways in
- 0:35Speaker 1: the building.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yes, I am how are you good?
- 0:38Speaker 1: How are you?
- 0:39Speaker 2: I'm not broke no more.
- 0:41Speaker 1: That's why we have you here. This is uh. This
- 0:43Speaker 1: show is for the self made only club. You have
- 0:46Speaker 1: to be self made. Started from the bottom and now
- 0:49Speaker 1: we're here.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Started from the bottom, now we're here.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yes, Yes, it's an honor to have you. I was
- 0:55Speaker 1: really excited. I think I waited a couple of weeks
- 0:57Speaker 1: before we got the official yes, and I.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Was like yes.
- 1:01Speaker 1: So I try not to get too excited because you
- 1:03Speaker 1: never know about last minute cancelations. But thank you so
- 1:05Speaker 1: much for taking time.
- 1:06Speaker 2: When I get my word, I keep my word.
- 1:08Speaker 3: So I try not to cancel on people once I've
- 1:09Speaker 3: said yes. But you're right, that is a possibility. It's
- 1:12Speaker 3: always a possibility. Now today, well what is a dish
- 1:18Speaker 3: you ate while you were broke? Because I know today
- 1:20Speaker 3: you're going to do something very special. I'm gonna do
- 1:22Speaker 3: something very quick that you that's inexpensive.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Okay, do today, So today I'm going.
- 1:28Speaker 3: To show you how to do this apricot, jalipino mint,
- 1:31Speaker 3: garlic chicken and you have karaoke in it, right, you're
- 1:35Speaker 3: just that's bearing part of the marinate. But the cool
- 1:37Speaker 3: thing about this is once you do get everything and
- 1:40Speaker 3: you get it all chopped up, and you would normally
- 1:42Speaker 3: put it in like a zip like bag overnight and
- 1:46Speaker 3: then I either grill it or roast it in the
- 1:48Speaker 3: oven or bake it. You don't really fry it. But
- 1:51Speaker 3: then you take all the leftover marinate and you put
- 1:53Speaker 3: it in a small pot and you cook it until
- 1:55Speaker 3: it bubbles up and get all the bacteria out, and
- 1:58Speaker 3: then you take the marinate and you pour it over
- 2:00Speaker 3: the chicken.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I don't even know you could do that.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Oh, you could definitely do that when you have a
- 2:04Speaker 3: great marinad. Really you don't have to dump it. Sometimes
- 2:08Speaker 3: people add like a little like you could add a
- 2:10Speaker 3: little bit more tiocic too, So people just add water,
- 2:12Speaker 3: some people anything. But what you want to do is
- 2:13Speaker 3: you want to get on a pot. You want to
- 2:14Speaker 3: get a hot and you want to boil. When it
- 2:15Speaker 3: starts to boil, you're getting all that bacteria out.
- 2:18Speaker 2: You know. That's how you make grapy.
- 2:19Speaker 3: You take all the bottoms of a you know, the
- 2:22Speaker 3: stuff in the pan, and you have to flour to
- 2:23Speaker 3: it and you add a little bit more garlic and
- 2:25Speaker 3: water and stuff and.
- 2:26Speaker 2: You cook it.
- 2:27Speaker 3: And that's how you make grapely from the scrapemings at
- 2:29Speaker 3: the bottom of the pan. So you're just taking the marinate,
- 2:32Speaker 3: want you because you're gonna take the marinaate because it's sweet.
- 2:35Speaker 2: The marionnae would burn on the.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Grill because of the Africa jelly. Okay, so you're gonna
- 2:40Speaker 3: kind of shake it off, grill the chicken. But then
- 2:42Speaker 3: you really get you shake it off. You gonna shake
- 2:44Speaker 3: it off, but it's marinated in that overnight. Of course,
- 2:47Speaker 3: we don't have time to do that right now. Yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 3: but we're just gonna pretend and that's what happens. Right
- 2:51Speaker 3: So I'm gonna get started if you don't mind.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Wow, this looks In the five minutes we've been together,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I've learned that when it comes to anything let or leafy,
- 3:01Speaker 1: like your mint leaves, to make sure that they're dry.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Yes, last for me.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Then she just I said, no, you've got to pat
- 3:07Speaker 3: those dry because in order for to chop up good.
- 3:10Speaker 3: It's got to be dry, but you want to wash
- 3:11Speaker 3: it first, like you want to wash your fruits, your vegetables,
- 3:14Speaker 3: you know, your your herbs. I mean, it's just like
- 3:15Speaker 3: a lettuce, like a salad. You don't wash lettuce and
- 3:18Speaker 3: then make the salad. You got droopy lettuce, that's why.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Or just pat I've a spend thing, but I never
- 3:24Speaker 3: use it.
- 3:25Speaker 2: It just takes too much time.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I just take paper towel and I laid my lettuce
- 3:29Speaker 3: leaves and I just pat them dry, and then I
- 3:31Speaker 3: let them sit for a minute, finish dry, and then
- 3:32Speaker 3: I chop them up and getting ready for my salad.
- 3:34Speaker 3: So any herbs anything like that that's leafy, you want
- 3:37Speaker 3: to dry at first, empty washing. But the real good
- 3:39Speaker 3: way to do is after I buy it, I wash
- 3:42Speaker 3: everything and sit it in my bin on top of
- 3:44Speaker 3: my counter, and I just let it drip dry by itself.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Let it air dry, okay, you know. Then I padded
- 3:50Speaker 3: dry a little bit.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Then I put in my refrigerator, so when I go
- 3:52Speaker 2: to use it, it's already clean.
- 3:54Speaker 1: You do that for everything, like even your meat, my fruits.
- 3:56Speaker 3: You know, not my meat, I do some like my fruits,
- 3:58Speaker 3: my herbs, anything, any veggies, any veggies I buy in
- 4:02Speaker 3: the store, and any fruits. When I get home, I
- 4:05Speaker 3: wash them really good and I set them in a
- 4:06Speaker 3: bind and I just let them sit there and kind
- 4:08Speaker 3: of drip dry.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And then and then I'll just take a paper towel.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I love paper towels. I got you a whole roll.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I'll go through that roll. Now I'm gonna paper. I
- 4:18Speaker 3: have a thing for paper towels, really do.
- 4:19Speaker 2: It's strange, costo. But then I'll go and I'll.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Pat dry everything and then I put in my refrigerator
- 4:27Speaker 3: to when I need it.
- 4:28Speaker 1: It's nice and Crispin Glean that's brilliant.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Well, I'm thankful to you today because now that I
- 4:35Speaker 1: know you're not going to be making this dish, but
- 4:38Speaker 1: showing us how to make it.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, wear because we don't have a grill and we
- 4:41Speaker 3: don't have oven. But what you will see is you'll
- 4:45Speaker 3: see the marinade. And I think we had another. Well,
- 4:48Speaker 3: I'll take this plate or something and i'll take the
- 4:50Speaker 3: chicken off, and then you can see how much marinad
- 4:52Speaker 3: you have and how easy it is to cook it.
- 4:54Speaker 3: But to ask your question, I'm gonna talk and cook. Right,
- 4:57Speaker 3: So I'm a season my chicken first, uh, And I'm
- 5:00Speaker 3: gonna just take.
- 5:01Speaker 2: A little olive oil here.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And I don't do like choice teaspools feet and I
- 5:05Speaker 3: don't cook like that.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Oh you're a real cook.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I'm an eye cooker. I cook. I cook like this.
- 5:10Speaker 3: So I'm gonna shake little little gratulated garland.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You did that gradulated? This is garlic property. This is good.
- 5:16Speaker 2: A little grands. I'm gonna have real garlic.
- 5:18Speaker 1: What's the difference between granulated?
- 5:20Speaker 3: I like the gradulated because it's like fine, it's kind
- 5:22Speaker 3: of like sandy, like sand. The guylic garlic powder. Some
- 5:26Speaker 3: garlic powder is like power, real powder.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Okay, that's just me. I don't that's just me, you know.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I don't like that.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I was it.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I was We didn't guys in.
- 5:35Speaker 3: The open this to open app and make sure this
- 5:39Speaker 3: one is. It's just one over Okay, this one is
- 5:40Speaker 3: open lot' tonight.
- 5:41Speaker 2: So I'm gonnadd a little pepper.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Right, No, I think this is open?
- 5:47Speaker 2: Is it open? Okay? There we go here. Just don't
- 5:50Speaker 2: don't waste that dumping in there. There you go. I
- 5:53Speaker 2: love the little salt.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I love how you just did that He was like,
- 5:57Speaker 1: we're not gonna waste this.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Don't waste nothing.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I need little charioche. Oh you don't dump the whole thing. Okay,
- 6:03Speaker 1: no little charioche. And we're gonna mix it garlic, pepper, salt.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Really really like I would really go through this and
- 6:13Speaker 3: make sure everything is really season That's how I do, right,
- 6:16Speaker 3: make sure everything is really season.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Everything's on there.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And the olive oil just helps everything.
- 6:22Speaker 2: It's just like a Lubri kid, you know. So you
- 6:26Speaker 2: got that.
- 6:27Speaker 3: And I like the cook with gloves just I'm because
- 6:29Speaker 3: I'm kind of fastidious and I don't like cook with
- 6:33Speaker 3: gloves at home to cook with gloves. I like the
- 6:35Speaker 3: other one, the Latex.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Oh okay, like the little black ones.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so not in here. I'm gonna add garlic. Now
- 6:43Speaker 3: you said how much for this?
- 6:45Speaker 2: Uh? This is good.
- 6:47Speaker 3: I think I like garlic, but I mean I'm probably
- 6:49Speaker 3: have a few more pieces.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I think there's more I know here.
- 6:52Speaker 2: You want to open it up for me? Is it okay?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Because I'm gonna pretend like I made this barenade myself
- 6:56Speaker 1: at home and look.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Like this is good because it's not a whole lot.
- 7:00Speaker 2: But I like garlic too. So that's the thing. So
- 7:02Speaker 2: you see that.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Yeah, garlic, it's like at least ten clothes of garlic.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Now I would have used she got pickled alipans, which
- 7:09Speaker 3: is fine.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I would have used a real hala pano. Oh, but
- 7:14Speaker 2: this is fine.
- 7:15Speaker 3: But when you can always use fresh ingredients, okay, and
- 7:19Speaker 3: you don't.
- 7:20Speaker 1: How do you know if that's pickles? Does it say
- 7:21Speaker 1: pickled on it?
- 7:22Speaker 2: Because it's in a jar?
- 7:24Speaker 3: That old Yeah, We've been in the produce section, the
- 7:29Speaker 3: little green things, and one is probably a plenty. Okay,
- 7:34Speaker 3: so because this is probably not as hot, so but
- 7:35Speaker 3: I'm not gonna put a lot on that. This is
- 7:37Speaker 3: this is the kicker rooney right here. This is apricot jelly.
- 7:42Speaker 3: So what you're doing is you're adding a garlic ea
- 7:44Speaker 3: flavor with a little hot but a little sweet. So
- 7:48Speaker 3: it's like as you eat it, you taste like garlic,
- 7:50Speaker 3: you taste the sweetness and you get a little bit
- 7:52Speaker 3: of a heat. So it's really cool and it's really
- 7:55Speaker 3: great for the chicken. And then we're gonna add some
- 7:56Speaker 3: men and kids like this, and you can make it
- 7:58Speaker 3: as hot as you want, less hot, less garlic. It's
- 8:01Speaker 3: like upgu like if you can make a sweeter. If
- 8:03Speaker 3: you're doing it for the kids, use more apricot jelly
- 8:05Speaker 3: because the kids will eat it, right, but just a
- 8:07Speaker 3: little garlic maybe and maybe not a much hallowpeeno if
- 8:10Speaker 3: your kids are funny.
- 8:11Speaker 2: But I like this as an.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Alternative for chicken for dinner parties because everybody eats grilled
- 8:15Speaker 3: chicken and everybody eats all that stuff, right, So for
- 8:18Speaker 3: dinner parties, I'll do this, and then we'll do something
- 8:20Speaker 3: you know, we do like three proteins. I usually have
- 8:22Speaker 3: a fish, some type of steak and the chicken. And
- 8:25Speaker 3: I like to do this because I'll give a hell
- 8:28Speaker 3: of a dinner party. So anyway, so now I'm gonna
- 8:30Speaker 3: take some of this apricot jelly jeans is apricot jelly,
- 8:41Speaker 3: and let's see if I'm successful with this.
- 8:43Speaker 1: But wait, you're not gonna add anything else to it.
- 8:46Speaker 3: I'm gonna put up bit more tarioca in it, but
- 8:47Speaker 3: I'm just trying.
- 8:48Speaker 2: To see where it goes first. And you can use
- 8:50Speaker 2: water too, if you don't have to rocket, you can
- 8:51Speaker 2: use water. Do I have it on there? And I
- 8:54Speaker 2: don't think so this is not this is not my
- 8:57Speaker 2: mind at home up here. Put a little bit of
- 8:58Speaker 2: that in there.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Well, a little tariochy in there. This is not my
- 9:04Speaker 3: you know I have and just a couple of swooper
- 9:07Speaker 3: loop y'all.
- 9:07Speaker 2: That's what I did. I did this. I said, do
- 9:10Speaker 2: do do do do. That's what I said. That's how
- 9:13Speaker 2: I think.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I think it's Yeah, you gotta yep and the.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Okay, heard a lot mad, a little bit more tariocy
- 9:19Speaker 3: in here.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's looking like a little thick, thick, little sauce.
- 9:25Speaker 2: It's a marinee but it's a sauce. You know.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Do you ever like sample the sauce before you definitely talk?
- 9:31Speaker 2: Yeah, my god, Oh I forgot the net. That's what
- 9:34Speaker 2: I forgot.
- 9:34Speaker 1: It's gonna be delicious.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Gotta do the net, Dan. I wish I would have
- 9:37Speaker 2: had it with the mint.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Now you're gonna you're gonna taste it again with the mint.
- 9:40Speaker 1: That little mixture right there.
- 9:42Speaker 2: See integrate.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Let that little mixture right there is gonna get me remarried.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Okay, So yeah, here we go. That's how it's supposed
- 9:53Speaker 2: to look.
- 9:53Speaker 3: I got a different Yeah, I'm gonna just get right
- 9:56Speaker 3: here on the side.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Mm hmm. That meant now, so I would probably have
- 10:02Speaker 2: more mint. We just used the bitch you have it? Yeah, yeah,
- 10:05Speaker 2: but you can taste it.
- 10:05Speaker 3: You can taste the men and you can taste the garlic.
- 10:08Speaker 1: So you want to go through at least two packs.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Of men once. Of all, it depends on how much
- 10:12Speaker 2: chicken you're doing.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Oh okay, but if you got a lot of chickens
- 10:15Speaker 3: in your you need a lot of mint. I would
- 10:16Speaker 3: use definitely, Like I don't really taste the jalapenos as
- 10:18Speaker 3: much as i'd.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Like to know, but you can still taste. It's a
- 10:21Speaker 1: little kid.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Taste it, you know. Let's just put a couple more
- 10:24Speaker 2: in here.
- 10:24Speaker 3: But I would like to hear I would like to
- 10:26Speaker 3: taste the halo penos a little bit more. So, look
- 10:29Speaker 3: you see what that looks like. And then I like
- 10:31Speaker 3: to give my a little spray.
- 10:32Speaker 1: From we have the red one right there.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yes, lords, I don't like to waste nothing. I love
- 10:37Speaker 3: that I don't waste nothing.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Dang that so good. I would be making a boatlo,
- 10:42Speaker 1: can you just make it and then let it set
- 10:44Speaker 1: in your friends?
- 10:45Speaker 3: Mean, because it's got our oil is all done. You
- 10:48Speaker 3: can definitely do things like overnight this for a couple
- 10:51Speaker 3: of days. Okay, so you have a dinner party on
- 10:54Speaker 3: Friday and you're gonna be busy Thursday. You can do this, wizard.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You and these dinner parties. I don't think I've ever
- 10:59Speaker 1: had a real dinner party.
- 11:00Speaker 2: You a grown woman. You gotta have a real dinner party. Yeah,
- 11:04Speaker 2: there's nothing like a great dinner party.
- 11:06Speaker 3: M But you could do this literally like instead it
- 11:08Speaker 3: a refrigerator in a zip black bag for a couple
- 11:11Speaker 3: of days. It's gonna be fine til you get til
- 11:13Speaker 3: you get to cook it. Okay, so you see.
- 11:15Speaker 1: All that right there, Yeah, in that grade that looks
- 11:18Speaker 1: the l Well, let me just tell you something that
- 11:20Speaker 1: tastes so good.
- 11:22Speaker 3: I see that.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Yeah, Now I.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Would put this, like I said, in a zip black
- 11:26Speaker 3: bag just like this, and and as you go back
- 11:29Speaker 3: you taste you could say, that's why you gonna take Oh,
- 11:32Speaker 3: I think I'm wanna a little bit more, a little
- 11:34Speaker 3: bit more garlic, poper. Oh wanna add a little bit
- 11:37Speaker 3: more PEPPERII thing, you know, And I think it needs
- 11:39Speaker 3: a little bit more salt.
- 11:40Speaker 2: It needs a little more salt, alright, And then you.
- 11:46Speaker 1: That looks delicious.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Then, so now don't you have to take the chicken out.
- 11:50Speaker 3: But this is what you would do.
- 11:51Speaker 2: So say you do?
- 11:52Speaker 3: Now you got this out of.
- 11:56Speaker 2: No tong to Nope, okay, I'll use a fork. Say
- 11:59Speaker 2: you got this out?
- 12:02Speaker 3: Now you know of your bag, your plastic bag, and
- 12:06Speaker 3: it's time to grill. Well, like I said.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Before, this is sugar. So you got to watch it on.
- 12:13Speaker 3: The grill because it will burn quick.
- 12:16Speaker 1: But isn't it like that good burn Because you.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Gotta watch it though you fame is not too high
- 12:21Speaker 3: and you gotta watch it. But even if you just
- 12:23Speaker 3: you could just like like I said, you could bake
- 12:26Speaker 3: it or roast it in your oven. So but you
- 12:28Speaker 3: see how this has.
- 12:29Speaker 2: The flavor on it? Yeah, okay, so we just say
- 12:31Speaker 2: that all this Now, I.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Just want to show you how the the marinate looks like.
- 12:35Speaker 3: So you do this. This is how you're gonna cook it.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You're not gonna cook all that stuff on it, right.
- 12:40Speaker 1: You want to get the access off.
- 12:41Speaker 3: You're gonna get the access off and cook it in
- 12:44Speaker 3: the flavor.
- 12:45Speaker 2: You get the idea, Yeah, I get the idea.
- 12:47Speaker 3: So, but I just want to show how much of
- 12:49Speaker 3: much of this marinate it's left over?
- 12:51Speaker 2: How much Marionnate you have and then you chase that.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I think I want a little bit more tariocic.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I mean you chase that's it tastes so good. I
- 12:57Speaker 1: feel like that apricotsious.
- 13:00Speaker 3: You change the game. Kids like this chicken too, by
- 13:02Speaker 3: the way, So say you see that mayor Nate m
- 13:05Speaker 3: Now you can even make more, but I'll tell you
- 13:08Speaker 3: if you don't need it, because by the time, because
- 13:10Speaker 3: this has an on it, and I would add like
- 13:13Speaker 3: maybe a little bit more cheriochy to it, some more seasoning.
- 13:17Speaker 3: You could add more garlic or whatever you want. But
- 13:19Speaker 3: you see that, Yeah, it's time. You boil this up.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Then you pour it back over the cooked chicken.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Okay, and that gives you a little extra sauce.
- 13:28Speaker 1: That's awesome, right.
- 13:29Speaker 2: That's it. We'll put this.
- 13:31Speaker 1: It looks deliciously.
- 13:32Speaker 3: She says, she's gonna take this home to night cook.
- 13:35Speaker 1: We're gonnah, you don't get a post on your social
- 13:37Speaker 1: where it's gonna be like it was a hit tonight,
- 13:40Speaker 1: then it was a hit.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Right. It's definitely better when you marinated overnight, or at
- 13:48Speaker 3: least do it in the morning before you go to work,
- 13:51Speaker 3: and then when you come home from work you can
- 13:53Speaker 3: have it Oh, I'm gonna put this messiness over here,
- 13:56Speaker 3: all the stuff that we use right here, so we can.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Have perfect Now we can get into your story.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Really.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Definitely, try to have that marinate as long as you can,
- 14:07Speaker 3: at least the morning before you go to work. I
- 14:10Speaker 3: know sometimes I used to do that when my kids
- 14:12Speaker 3: were little. Before I went to the studio, I would
- 14:15Speaker 3: get up and get you know, things all cooked and
- 14:17Speaker 3: ready to go. And so when I got home, all
- 14:21Speaker 3: I had to do was just do the food.
- 14:23Speaker 2: You know.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I love how you're cleaning up too.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Oh.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I always got clean clean up after yourself immediately when
- 14:28Speaker 3: you cook.
- 14:29Speaker 2: That's always the best thing to do.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Like, if I was at home, I'd be washing all
- 14:32Speaker 3: this in my sink right now.
- 14:34Speaker 2: That's the best way to do it.
- 14:35Speaker 1: That's how I am. I like, I can't even start
- 14:38Speaker 1: cooking unless the house is like, yeah, the kitchen has
- 14:40Speaker 1: to be met.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Everything has to be nice and okay.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But so you have it there, we have it, have it,
- 14:46Speaker 1: have it.
- 14:47Speaker 4: It now, And now I can sit down and tell
- 15:01Speaker 4: us about these broke dishes you was eating.
- 15:03Speaker 3: You don't want to know what I ate when I
- 15:05Speaker 3: was broke it. I gotta paint the picture for you.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I was right out of Ohio University. When I graduated,
- 15:13Speaker 3: I moved to New York. New York is a very
- 15:15Speaker 3: expensive city, and I was dancing on scholarship with Alvin Ailey.
- 15:20Speaker 2: So I was dancing. I was a dancer first.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Is that what you went to school for?
- 15:24Speaker 3: My Bachelor of Fine Arts concentration in dance. So I'm
- 15:27Speaker 3: in New York City dancing and.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I got a waitress job.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Then I worked like two three nights, you know, at
- 15:35Speaker 3: the Cellar, which was a very prominent dominic in American place.
- 15:38Speaker 3: It was very popular in the eighties.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You know.
- 15:41Speaker 3: It was on ninety six and Columbus Avenue. So I
- 15:44Speaker 3: would get a free dinner. When you worked, you got
- 15:46Speaker 3: a dinner. So I love the nights that I worked
- 15:48Speaker 3: because I ate Otherwise I ate oatmeal and yogurt.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Wow.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Yeah, oh say it was packet oatmeal at that Yeah,
- 15:56Speaker 3: that's the only one I eat.
- 15:58Speaker 2: And fruit, That's what I had fruit.
- 16:00Speaker 1: But mainly the free the free meals of the free
- 16:02Speaker 1: meals was I knew.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I got a meal that day, and I ate oat meal.
- 16:06Speaker 3: I ate yogurt, and you buy the fruit off the
- 16:08Speaker 3: street and buy fruit. I didn't have a lot of girl,
- 16:10Speaker 3: I didn't have a lot of money for food, for groceries.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Did you have a lot of roommates too?
- 16:14Speaker 2: Not just I was by myself.
- 16:15Speaker 3: I'm really were you like you New York had a
- 16:19Speaker 3: studio apartment downtown Brooklyn.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I'm not a roommate girl.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Okay, So yeah, so that's what I ate.
- 16:26Speaker 3: And then when I got money, then I started cookie.
- 16:30Speaker 3: I had learned how to cook better, is because I
- 16:32Speaker 3: finally got married, you know, after a while.
- 16:34Speaker 2: But I would get the.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Little of the little fish what are they call porgeese
- 16:40Speaker 3: that was that was famous in New York.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Porgiese. They were like about this big and I would
- 16:44Speaker 2: bake those.
- 16:45Speaker 3: I ate a lot of porgies and then I eat
- 16:48Speaker 3: a lot of veggies, kind of like what I do today.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Actually, my my diet.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Is not a lot different from what it was then
- 16:55Speaker 3: because I was a dancer and you know, I was
- 16:57Speaker 3: very healthy. But I ate a lot of little porgiese
- 17:00Speaker 3: eight cheap fish and veggies and.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Yo, you know, I ate yogurt and oatmeal first.
- 17:06Speaker 3: And then after I started working saving money, I started eating,
- 17:09Speaker 3: you know, a little bit more of stuff that I
- 17:11Speaker 3: could afford to buy go to the grocery store. But
- 17:13Speaker 3: I just don't want to always by just enough because
- 17:15Speaker 3: I didn't want to waste food, you know.
- 17:17Speaker 2: And so yeah, but.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Your mission when you were coming to New York was
- 17:21Speaker 1: to be a dancer in a.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Theater, dancer, to do the whole thing.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Yeah, so while you were going through that, what was
- 17:27Speaker 1: your next big play in that struggle life?
- 17:30Speaker 3: Like? What was that where you had to get you
- 17:32Speaker 3: had to get seen, you had to get.
- 17:34Speaker 2: A job first.
- 17:36Speaker 1: But you were working at the cellar.
- 17:37Speaker 2: And then I was working at the cellar because I
- 17:39Speaker 2: needed some money. I had to pay rent.
- 17:41Speaker 3: But that had nothing to do with my career, although
- 17:43Speaker 3: I did get my very first commercial out.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Of the cellar.
- 17:46Speaker 3: For the people that live in New York that listen
- 17:48Speaker 3: to you, they might recall a commercial called, oh die hand,
- 17:53Speaker 3: it's about it's a hairwave commercial. Now, this was when
- 17:55Speaker 3: hair weeds, I mean when they just came out. So
- 17:58Speaker 3: it was horrible, the hair he was horrible, and it
- 18:02Speaker 3: was this salon. Matter of fact, I had to call
- 18:05Speaker 3: them years later and say cease and dismiss because they
- 18:07Speaker 3: were still trying to use the old Diane hair commercial.
- 18:10Speaker 3: When I was Vanessa Bell and then after I became
- 18:12Speaker 3: Vanessa Bell Callaway and famous, they were.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Trying to use it, so that's another story.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And I told him to stop because that was like
- 18:20Speaker 3: a thousand years prior and I didn't sign it for that.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Vanessa Bell Collwich did not sign that, okay, you know,
- 18:27Speaker 3: and they only had that for however long they had it.
- 18:29Speaker 2: They tried it, but you know, they stopped. I had
- 18:31Speaker 2: the lawyer stop.
- 18:32Speaker 3: But anyway, so I got my first commercial out of there,
- 18:34Speaker 3: and then I also did some dance concert out of there.
- 18:36Speaker 3: I met George face On and he put me in
- 18:38Speaker 3: this uh a concert that he did with his.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Company, so it served his purpose.
- 18:43Speaker 3: And then I had to I left the seller obviously
- 18:45Speaker 3: because I started to work.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I got my first.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Summer stock job, which allowed me to get my equity card.
- 18:54Speaker 2: You know, equity is theater.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Okay, okay, And what's summer stock means?
- 18:58Speaker 3: Summer stock is you know, you do theater around the country,
- 19:03Speaker 3: like in these different theaters that have plays during the summer.
- 19:06Speaker 3: You know, theater is really big, especially like in those
- 19:09Speaker 3: small towns. Summerstock that's what people do. They go see
- 19:11Speaker 3: the theater. And the very first show I did was
- 19:13Speaker 3: The Whiz, a summerstock and we were in somewhere in Ohio,
- 19:16Speaker 3: like and I'm from Ohio, but we were in like
- 19:19Speaker 3: the small small towns in a while, and so I
- 19:22Speaker 3: got my equity card that way. Then I ended up
- 19:24Speaker 3: getting my SAG card, which is like for commercials, because
- 19:27Speaker 3: that I used to do a lot of commercials and
- 19:29Speaker 3: started doing a lot of commercials in New York. And
- 19:31Speaker 3: you get your after card, which is voiceovers and stuff.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Now it's SAG after, but back then it was SAG
- 19:36Speaker 3: and after they.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Were shy, were separate, Okay, So.
- 19:38Speaker 3: I had equity first, then I got sacked and I
- 19:41Speaker 3: got after. And once you get into the unions, it
- 19:43Speaker 3: makes your life a little easier because then you're able to,
- 19:47Speaker 3: you know, audition for things, and they're able to hire
- 19:49Speaker 3: you because you're already in the union. So that held
- 19:52Speaker 3: a great deal. And then I started doing soap operas,
- 19:57Speaker 3: which was huge. No, no, take that back. I went
- 20:00Speaker 3: on Broadway first. I did a couple of Broadway shows
- 20:03Speaker 3: and off Broadway shows. So you know, the thing is,
- 20:06Speaker 3: you said, the next thing, the next thing is just
- 20:07Speaker 3: getting a job, And when you get a job, you
- 20:08Speaker 3: gotta get that next job?
- 20:09Speaker 2: You got a job? What's that next one?
- 20:11Speaker 1: And then but then you when do you so once
- 20:14Speaker 1: you got your first what did you say?
- 20:17Speaker 2: What did you call it? Shock? What did you say
- 20:19Speaker 2: it was called?
- 20:19Speaker 1: When summerstock summers.
- 20:21Speaker 3: That was like the very first thing I got like
- 20:24Speaker 3: this because I got there like in the summer, and
- 20:26Speaker 3: then that following summer because I had been there like working,
- 20:29Speaker 3: you know, in auditioning for almost a year. Then I
- 20:31Speaker 3: got Summer Stock and I was able to get mine.
- 20:34Speaker 1: And that's when you officially Was that when you officially
- 20:36Speaker 1: stopped working day jobs?
- 20:38Speaker 3: Kind of yeah, kind of, well, kind because I stopped
- 20:40Speaker 3: working because I got of the jobs at other small
- 20:44Speaker 3: companies because I ended up leaving Alvin Ailey and then
- 20:47Speaker 3: I started, you know, then I was going to go
- 20:48Speaker 3: away on tour with this company for the summer. So yeah,
- 20:51Speaker 3: and after that I was able to support myself only
- 20:54Speaker 3: with jobs I didn't have to do.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I did no more waitressing or anything like that. Wow,
- 20:58Speaker 2: I just yeah, I did. That was the only thing.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I did waitress for a little bit when I first
- 21:02Speaker 3: got to New York. And I've never had to do
- 21:05Speaker 3: anything else to take care of myself.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Now, were there ever like what I call like lean seasons,
- 21:10Speaker 1: like where you were like you had to budget according
- 21:14Speaker 1: or you lived within certain of course.
- 21:16Speaker 3: It's always you know, lean seasons. And I was I
- 21:19Speaker 3: was by myself.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I'm single.
- 21:21Speaker 1: And what were your parents saying during all this because
- 21:23Speaker 1: you were a young luck good luck? Were they in
- 21:26Speaker 1: support them?
- 21:27Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 21:27Speaker 3: They were, but you know, I'm from Ohio and I
- 21:30Speaker 3: got no money in Ohio.
- 21:31Speaker 2: They couldn't afford it, you know.
- 21:32Speaker 3: I always, like I used to tell everybody that, especially
- 21:35Speaker 3: I tell my daughters.
- 21:36Speaker 2: I didn't have.
- 21:36Speaker 3: ANESS in Tony for parents like my kids, you know,
- 21:39Speaker 3: they move away somewhere and they're set.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Like my daughter moved to New.
- 21:42Speaker 3: York four years after she graduated from spelling, My youngest one,
- 21:45Speaker 3: she was set. We got our apartment, she hooked up out.
- 21:48Speaker 3: You don't got the apartment hooked up for I didn't
- 21:50Speaker 3: have ANESS in Tony. I was very much on my own.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I had a mask.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Because you guys still pay, Like were you paying her
- 21:56Speaker 1: bills for those four years?
- 21:57Speaker 3: We took care of her apartment because she was right
- 21:59Speaker 3: out of college.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I know, to be on the Vanessa and TONI you said,
- 22:02Speaker 1: Vanessa TONI plan, yeah, shout out.
- 22:03Speaker 2: She was working, you know, we we were helping her out.
- 22:06Speaker 3: But I had a mattress and a dresser was on
- 22:09Speaker 3: the no and eating I'm telling you a match and
- 22:12Speaker 3: a dresser eating oatmeal and yogurt and fruit.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I just stay full. Yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 1: And I was in class all day too. So you
- 22:20Speaker 1: were just focused, you weren't. You weren't minding none of that.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I was just you know.
- 22:25Speaker 3: I didn't go all you know, I didn't go out
- 22:26Speaker 3: like the way I party and hang.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Out and go to dinners. Now.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Never did that in New York. I didn't people do it,
- 22:31Speaker 3: but I didn't, you know, the money I had I
- 22:33Speaker 3: had to save, you know. Yeah, but I was But
- 22:37Speaker 3: I was smart because what I did, especially when I
- 22:40Speaker 3: got on all my children, if I did while I
- 22:42Speaker 3: was on Broadway. There's a thing called the credit union, right,
- 22:46Speaker 3: So what I would have the credit union do, and
- 22:49Speaker 3: you got paid every week, I would have them take
- 22:51Speaker 3: out some of my money and keep it, and that
- 22:54Speaker 3: I would live off of the money that I litted myself.
- 22:57Speaker 3: And you always got one of your checks, one of
- 22:58Speaker 3: your pay check should always pay your rent, at least
- 23:01Speaker 3: one of them, if not one and a half of
- 23:03Speaker 3: the next one. But if you can have one paycheck, really,
- 23:06Speaker 3: they'll tell you one paycheck out of the month should
- 23:08Speaker 3: pay your rent.
- 23:09Speaker 2: So I adapted that.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Theory, so i'd have I looked at my rent and
- 23:12Speaker 3: I said, okay, my money and said, okay, this this
- 23:14Speaker 3: is enough for my bill money, this is how much
- 23:16Speaker 3: I need to live, and then this can be put away.
- 23:19Speaker 1: So and you started that young, I started that young.
- 23:22Speaker 3: So in doing that, then when I got to all
- 23:25Speaker 3: my children, and I was making more money than I
- 23:28Speaker 3: was making my brother because I was in the original
- 23:29Speaker 3: company of dream Girls. And when I tell you I
- 23:31Speaker 3: made like five hundred and seventy five, I'll never get it.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I made five hundred seventy five dollars a week, wow,
- 23:37Speaker 3: which is not nothing? Which is nothing then eight so
- 23:42Speaker 3: that's like almost two thousand dollars a month, right, But
- 23:45Speaker 3: like I said, that was the eighties.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:46Speaker 3: But then when I got on all my children, I
- 23:48Speaker 3: was making like five something an episode, and then sometimes
- 23:51Speaker 3: I would work three episodes.
- 23:53Speaker 2: It depends.
- 23:54Speaker 3: I would work sometimes, you know, soap o interesting. You
- 23:58Speaker 3: could work one day that week, you could work five
- 24:00Speaker 3: days that we depends on your storyline, But I was
- 24:02Speaker 3: having all my money go to the credit union. So
- 24:06Speaker 3: when I left to come out here from New York.
- 24:09Speaker 3: When I finally left New York to move out here,
- 24:10Speaker 3: I had so much money saved up.
- 24:13Speaker 1: But did you ever check those balances to see what
- 24:15Speaker 1: was in there?
- 24:17Speaker 3: Oh?
- 24:17Speaker 2: Okay?
- 24:18Speaker 1: And then to backtrack the soap operas, because I'm always
- 24:21Speaker 1: curious about this. Is it true that they like, have
- 24:23Speaker 1: you like memorized your lines every day and the next
- 24:25Speaker 1: day you have to like record them?
- 24:26Speaker 2: No?
- 24:27Speaker 1: No, no, you're good day that day, so you get
- 24:29Speaker 1: it that day.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna give you a life of a soap opera.
- 24:32Speaker 3: When I was in the storyline with Debbie Morgan and
- 24:35Speaker 3: Darnell Williams and we were very popular. Let's say I
- 24:38Speaker 3: worked four days that week. I might work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Let's just say that. So Monday we come and you
- 24:45Speaker 3: do what they call the prolog. You get there like
- 24:47Speaker 3: seven o'clock in the morning and you start blocking everything.
- 24:50Speaker 3: So you could be anywhere from like the prolog, and
- 24:53Speaker 3: you could be at one, two, three. There's usually six acts,
- 24:57Speaker 3: five and six. Maybe there's only one segment. You're not
- 25:00Speaker 3: in or two segments. So you're blocking that in the
- 25:04Speaker 3: morning and then you go hair and makeup and then
- 25:06Speaker 3: you block and shoot. So then you go out to
- 25:08Speaker 3: the student to the set and you actually run it
- 25:11Speaker 3: and shoot it. So you got to know those lines
- 25:13Speaker 3: by then. But now you're on the next day as well.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, so you've got to take that's a
- 25:17Speaker 1: lot us.
- 25:18Speaker 3: You got to take the script from now it's that stress.
- 25:20Speaker 3: It's just you know, you got a memory.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Yeah, so now you got to take the script.
- 25:24Speaker 3: So now you shooting Monday, but you gotta you start
- 25:27Speaker 3: working on Tuesday script because you've got to be in
- 25:30Speaker 3: a lot of scenes the next day.
- 25:32Speaker 2: So you got to learn that.
- 25:33Speaker 3: So it's just it's just it becomes a habit. You
- 25:36Speaker 3: learn how to do it, and it becomes easier than
- 25:39Speaker 3: you think, you know, because it's a technique to how
- 25:42Speaker 3: you do all that stuff.
- 25:43Speaker 1: So, yeah, were there any like but was there a
- 25:46Speaker 1: pressure like if you messed up your lines? Were they
- 25:48Speaker 1: like anal abowel?
- 25:49Speaker 3: No, soap barbers, they are not anal If you if
- 25:52Speaker 3: you wanted a chance to redo something, you had to
- 25:54Speaker 3: really mess up, because I mean, in a way, it's
- 25:57Speaker 3: kind of like they let real life happen. So like
- 25:59Speaker 3: when we're having a conversation here, if you go and
- 26:02Speaker 3: you stumbled, that's that's kind of natural, right, yeah, right,
- 26:06Speaker 3: Well if it has to be horrific for the soap
- 26:09Speaker 3: operas to say cut, do that again, because if we're
- 26:11Speaker 3: talking and I said, yeah.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Girl, they gonna keep going okay, okay, you know, because
- 26:18Speaker 1: it's like, what was your thoughts when you landed your
- 26:21Speaker 1: soap opera though? Like, what was that? Can you take
- 26:23Speaker 1: me back to that moment where you're like, oh.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Well, visualized being on all my children when I tell
- 26:29Speaker 3: you so much. I saw it in my dreams. I
- 26:32Speaker 3: knew it was gonna happen. I manifested it, and I
- 26:35Speaker 3: used to send them stuff every month like, hey, I'm
- 26:40Speaker 3: you know, I'm in this, I'm in that, sending pictures
- 26:42Speaker 3: of me, you know, just reminding them by who I was.
- 26:45Speaker 3: So I was determined to get on that show, and
- 26:47Speaker 3: I just when it happened. I wasn't surprised because I
- 26:51Speaker 3: knew the mental energy that I put into it, but
- 26:54Speaker 3: I was delighted and I was determined that that was
- 26:58Speaker 3: gonna work.
- 26:59Speaker 1: So you for it, Oh no, you put it that work.
- 27:02Speaker 2: No, I'll put that work in for that.
- 27:03Speaker 1: It wasn't just a like, I mean I had.
- 27:06Speaker 3: An audition, but you got to get to the point
- 27:08Speaker 3: where they called you into audition.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the art, and you were putting in net
- 27:12Speaker 1: work for that call.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I put in that work.
- 27:15Speaker 3: I stayed in touch with the casting people and I
- 27:17Speaker 3: used to send them stuff like every week.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Wow, is that now for the rest of your career?
- 27:21Speaker 1: Was it that difficult or or did you always difficult?
- 27:24Speaker 3: You know, it's never easy and just go oh, when
- 27:27Speaker 3: did you make it? Nobody's ever made it. Even the
- 27:29Speaker 3: people who who've made it, they're still trying to get
- 27:31Speaker 3: the next level of something, whatever that is for them.
- 27:35Speaker 2: So it's always difficult, you know.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Do you well even hearing that, do you are there
- 27:40Speaker 1: people or have you faced that point where you're like,
- 27:43Speaker 1: it's gotten to the point where maybe things have slowed
- 27:45Speaker 1: down to the point where you're like, oh.
- 27:46Speaker 3: No, no, it's because it's a different time and I'm
- 27:50Speaker 3: a different age, different category, a different everything. It actually
- 27:54Speaker 3: has been very good, you know, because there's more programming,
- 27:58Speaker 3: there's more stations, there's more shows because you know, all
- 28:03Speaker 3: the streaming and you know, Back in the day there
- 28:06Speaker 3: was NBCCBS and ABC that was it Fox, and those
- 28:10Speaker 3: guys hadn't even been created yet when I haven't.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Got out of college and started.
- 28:13Speaker 3: So the competition was very difficult, and they weren't working.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Black girls weren't working.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you know, it's only like a handful of
- 28:20Speaker 1: them that keep getting the same.
- 28:21Speaker 3: They sanctioned a few, and if you wasn't in that list,
- 28:25Speaker 3: I don't care how good you work.
- 28:27Speaker 2: It was difficult.
- 28:28Speaker 3: It's in a sense a little bit easier now, not
- 28:32Speaker 3: as easy as it should be, not as vast as
- 28:34Speaker 3: it should be.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Because there's more. You know, if I were the.
- 28:38Speaker 3: Age I was back then at the time, this time
- 28:40Speaker 3: right now, oh, I'd be killing it.
- 28:42Speaker 1: You think. So, I do think it's harder because of
- 28:44Speaker 1: the stream I got more options.
- 28:48Speaker 2: I mean, there's more if.
- 28:50Speaker 1: But is the pay still the same like with streaming services,
- 28:52Speaker 1: because I've seen something, Well.
- 28:54Speaker 3: I'm not really addressing the pay because the pay is
- 28:57Speaker 3: everything is negotiable. There's no contract that's the same. So
- 29:00Speaker 3: that's really depending on who you are, your value, and
- 29:03Speaker 3: who negotiates for you. So that's that's a different topic.
- 29:07Speaker 3: I'm talking about the opportunities because when I was right
- 29:10Speaker 3: out of college, it was very difficult.
- 29:13Speaker 2: You know. I was able to do a lot of commercials.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I was able to do Broadway and off Broadway.
- 29:17Speaker 3: I finally got into soap operas, but it was hard
- 29:20Speaker 3: because they weren't letting black girls work, not the way
- 29:22Speaker 3: you see all these little.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Black girls working now. Yes, that's what I'm saying.
- 29:25Speaker 3: If I if I had the talents I had then
- 29:28Speaker 3: and I was, you know, submerged in this market, now,
- 29:32Speaker 3: who knows what would happen?
- 29:33Speaker 2: You know?
- 29:34Speaker 3: Now is there more competition, Yes, but there's a lot
- 29:36Speaker 3: more opportunities because back then it's like it was hard,
- 29:40Speaker 3: you know, because you just didn't they sanctioned two or
- 29:43Speaker 3: three people to be the.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Female stars.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and then like I felt like for a long
- 29:50Speaker 1: time it was like only the light skinned and then
- 29:53Speaker 1: now definitely now it's definitely taking turns.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Definitely, Yeah, you know that people.
- 29:57Speaker 1: It's more recently than now.
- 29:59Speaker 2: I think that it still hasn't changed. It still is now.
- 30:02Speaker 1: It still is. But I feel like after Wakanda, you
- 30:04Speaker 1: started to see and it literally means.
- 30:07Speaker 3: I'm gonna say all that, but it's still it's hard
- 30:11Speaker 3: to do that. I mean, I look at commercials, look
- 30:13Speaker 3: at commercials, and now we're getting on the subject. I
- 30:15Speaker 3: don't know we're digressing, but I look at commercial and
- 30:19Speaker 3: it's I'm not you know, trust me. I love all
- 30:21Speaker 3: my sisters. We are all beautiful. I love my brother.
- 30:23Speaker 3: So I'm not saying it's to be condescending or anything
- 30:26Speaker 3: to anybody or there because we can't help the color
- 30:29Speaker 3: we are.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Who are mom and daddy was how we came out.
- 30:30Speaker 2: We can't have that. But it's just interested to me.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Every time I look at these commercials, it's a dark
- 30:34Speaker 3: skinned brother with a light skinned woman the wife. It
- 30:37Speaker 3: always is now and then you'll see a dark skinned
- 30:41Speaker 3: sister with a dark skinned brother. But it's like, what
- 30:43Speaker 3: is this formula that they think they have to use?
- 30:47Speaker 1: I think right now that everyone's trying to play it's
- 30:49Speaker 1: almost like too I hate to say it too too fair,
- 30:54Speaker 1: Like everything has to be like we have to have
- 30:56Speaker 1: one for each category race. It doesn't matter if someone's
- 30:59Speaker 1: super to it or not. I feel like every network
- 31:02Speaker 1: plays it super safe and growing up, I'm mixed. But
- 31:05Speaker 1: growing up I used to hate that I didn't see mixed. Ever,
- 31:09Speaker 1: I never saw mixed relationships growing up. Now, it's like,
- 31:12Speaker 1: now all you do is see everything.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Back then, they would never have a black man with
- 31:17Speaker 3: a white woman. Okay, so it's kind of like a
- 31:20Speaker 3: give and take. A lot of things have grown and progressed,
- 31:23Speaker 3: and a lot of things are like, okay, y'all staying
- 31:25Speaker 3: there a little too long?
- 31:25Speaker 2: Can we yeah?
- 31:27Speaker 3: You know what I mean, y'all stayed I mean, we
- 31:28Speaker 3: get that, and it's cool and that's right, and it's
- 31:30Speaker 3: good to show that, but can we show some of
- 31:32Speaker 3: this other stuff over here? But you know, it's gonna
- 31:34Speaker 3: take time for everything. But no, I think that now.
- 31:39Speaker 3: I worked so much now, I mean, I mean, I've
- 31:42Speaker 3: been blessed. I've worked my whole career, even when it
- 31:44Speaker 3: was difficult to get a.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Lot of stuff.
- 31:47Speaker 1: We talked some of your credits.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I tell you some.
- 31:49Speaker 3: Of those years it was difficult to get stuff, but
- 31:53Speaker 3: I just stayed in it. And I've always taken care
- 31:55Speaker 3: of myself and I think that happens and I've always
- 31:57Speaker 3: and I'm very professional and that definitely helps.
- 32:00Speaker 2: And so so.
- 32:02Speaker 3: I mean I'm good. It's you know, I constantly work.
- 32:03Speaker 3: Now you know, I'm starting in shows. I got my
- 32:06Speaker 3: black Hampton Show, going back on Vince Staples Show. You know,
- 32:09Speaker 3: I just got off a Broadway six months doing Parley
- 32:12Speaker 3: in New York, so you know.
- 32:14Speaker 1: A lot of things, a lot of I got a
- 32:15Speaker 1: couple of movies coming out, So you know, do you
- 32:18Speaker 1: still have to audition?
- 32:19Speaker 3: Oh?
- 32:19Speaker 2: Yes, unfortunately do you do?
- 32:21Speaker 1: You hate it when I.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Hate auditioning, hate it with the passion. But you know,
- 32:25Speaker 3: it's like some people call me and say, hey, Vanessa,
- 32:28Speaker 3: do this, and then some people say, you.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Know, we need to see her, We just need to
- 32:33Speaker 2: see her do this.
- 32:34Speaker 3: So then you you're your foot with the task of
- 32:38Speaker 3: you know, your eagle could get ahead of you and
- 32:39Speaker 3: go like.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Y'ah, yeah, just over to me now.
- 32:43Speaker 3: But if it's a part you really want, it was
- 32:45Speaker 3: a good part, do you say flip them off or
- 32:49Speaker 3: do you say okay, okay.
- 33:03Speaker 1: What role do you think, in particular change the trajectory
- 33:06Speaker 1: of your career.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Do you feel I think that I don't think it's
- 33:09Speaker 3: one role. I think that it's just was timing with
- 33:13Speaker 3: several roles. But of course, if you say it was
- 33:14Speaker 3: one of the most memorable that people love is coming
- 33:16Speaker 3: to America, ones love got to do with it you know.
- 33:19Speaker 3: But but but that didn't change my career like you
- 33:23Speaker 3: would think, Yeah, that's the same. I'm gonna just give
- 33:24Speaker 3: you an example. That same year, Meg Ryan was in
- 33:30Speaker 3: was it Officer and Gentlemen? Which one was that she
- 33:32Speaker 3: was a friend with Anthony Edwards? It was either top
- 33:37Speaker 3: with one top gun, so it must have been off anyway.
- 33:40Speaker 3: She was in one of them movies with Tom Cruise.
- 33:43Speaker 3: She played the girlfriend, and Paramount released my move and
- 33:48Speaker 3: released her movie.
- 33:49Speaker 2: They made her a star. I didn't get a job
- 33:51Speaker 2: after that.
- 33:53Speaker 3: People talked about me like, oh my god, you're so beautiful.
- 33:56Speaker 3: They called me in and had like this little general
- 33:58Speaker 3: meeting with a bunch of people just to say they
- 34:00Speaker 3: did and gave me nothing else after that they made
- 34:05Speaker 3: her a movie star. But you're talking about nineteen eighty
- 34:08Speaker 3: and nineteen eighty nine, Yeah, that time. But that's my point,
- 34:11Speaker 3: exactly what I'm saying about before you're talk about nineteen
- 34:13Speaker 3: eighty nine.
- 34:13Speaker 1: So I just see what you're saying. I think that
- 34:16Speaker 1: there is so many roles that you play world.
- 34:19Speaker 2: I think now that.
- 34:20Speaker 3: Role would really really like if I did that role
- 34:24Speaker 3: now the age I was then, it probably would have
- 34:27Speaker 3: spun off to a whole lot of things. Yeah, but
- 34:29Speaker 3: I'm grateful. You know, your journey is your journey. My
- 34:32Speaker 3: trajectory is my trajectory. It is what it is. I
- 34:34Speaker 3: am who I am because of all those things. And
- 34:36Speaker 3: guess what, you can't go back change it, So you
- 34:38Speaker 3: might as well just moving forward and be appreciative to
- 34:40Speaker 3: what you had, right.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Yeah, but I love to hear that you work for
- 34:43Speaker 1: I think that in today's age, everyone thinks it's just
- 34:46Speaker 1: like you get this one big role and then that's it.
- 34:49Speaker 1: You don't have to audition, you don't have to try out,
- 34:51Speaker 1: you don't have to network. Do you still network?
- 34:53Speaker 2: Of course I do.
- 34:53Speaker 1: You do.
- 34:54Speaker 3: I go to thing I go to in the order
- 34:56Speaker 3: you get the unless you want to be bothered. But
- 34:58Speaker 3: I get up and I go to things I should
- 35:00Speaker 3: go to so I could see people that I need
- 35:02Speaker 3: to see to say, reconnect, because it's not that people
- 35:04Speaker 3: don't like you.
- 35:05Speaker 2: They if they don't see, they don't think about you.
- 35:08Speaker 3: So if you stay in the house and stay out
- 35:10Speaker 3: of you know, the public, then people forget about you.
- 35:14Speaker 2: But not to me.
- 35:14Speaker 3: That you got to be like miss thing and everything
- 35:16Speaker 3: in the open of an envelope. But some things you
- 35:18Speaker 3: need to attend if you can, so you can hobnob
- 35:21Speaker 3: and rub elbows and hey, good to see.
- 35:23Speaker 2: You know. Some people go you know what.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I had a guest say on one of
- 35:28Speaker 1: our episodes that she would just do at least thirty
- 35:30Speaker 1: minutes to forty five minutes. She didn't just go do
- 35:33Speaker 1: her time, and then you know, get out.
- 35:36Speaker 2: But I don't go to everything.
- 35:39Speaker 3: I go to things either i'm invited for that I
- 35:40Speaker 3: want to be bothered with, you know, or things that
- 35:42Speaker 3: I know would benefit me, or things that I'm affiliating
- 35:44Speaker 3: with because maybe it's a you know, a cast party
- 35:48Speaker 3: or a screening or something like that. But I definitely
- 35:51Speaker 3: get out as much as I can because it's important.
- 35:54Speaker 1: And then for you, you have a team. I know
- 35:56Speaker 1: because I had to go through your team. Is it
- 35:59Speaker 1: I think I saw like Taraji or someone talk about
- 36:01Speaker 1: like all the different members on our team.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Do you have a small team. I have a very
- 36:05Speaker 3: small team right now. It's just being my manager, to
- 36:08Speaker 3: be quite honest with you, because of some other developments.
- 36:10Speaker 3: But no, I you know, I don't. I don't need
- 36:14Speaker 3: all those people to speak for me. You know, you
- 36:17Speaker 3: need a good publicist, and you need a good manager
- 36:20Speaker 3: who negotiates, and you know, sometimes if you need a lawyer.
- 36:22Speaker 3: But I don't have like a lot of people.
- 36:27Speaker 2: You know, do you have a team.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Do you usually have a publicist every time you have
- 36:30Speaker 1: a project come out or do you just keep a
- 36:32Speaker 1: publicist all year?
- 36:33Speaker 2: Wrong, I'm both. I've done both.
- 36:35Speaker 3: I've done both because technically, when you got a project
- 36:39Speaker 3: coming out, if the publicist for the project is doing
- 36:42Speaker 3: their job properly, you shouldn't have to have your own
- 36:44Speaker 3: publicists because they should be working for you know, not
- 36:47Speaker 3: only the project, but getting you plugged in as well.
- 36:51Speaker 3: That does it always work? Absolutely not. Sometimes you have
- 36:54Speaker 3: to get your own publicists because they're focused on save
- 36:58Speaker 3: your number three on.
- 36:59Speaker 2: The call sheet or number two on the caution.
- 37:01Speaker 3: Yeah, they're so focused on number one they're not paying
- 37:03Speaker 3: attention to you. So then that's when you Sometimes you
- 37:06Speaker 3: have to get your own publicists so that you could
- 37:08Speaker 3: get per on the same project.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Now, when they do it for you, like say it's
- 37:13Speaker 1: a movie or a show and the publicist comes along,
- 37:15Speaker 1: this is just a me question. By the way, do
- 37:18Speaker 1: you get to select what media when they say, okay,
- 37:21Speaker 1: here's do they present all the media to you. Because
- 37:23Speaker 1: I've seen a lot of.
- 37:24Speaker 3: Polic I'm like, I'll tell you this, like when shows
- 37:28Speaker 3: come out and I ask who are they? Who's that podcast?
- 37:32Speaker 3: It's like, you know, and everybody got a podcast now.
- 37:35Speaker 3: But that don't mean I gotta be on everybody's podcast
- 37:37Speaker 3: because I'm up in your podcast. You're really not doing
- 37:39Speaker 3: nothing for me, and we're not really promoting the show
- 37:41Speaker 3: for your two thousand viewers.
- 37:43Speaker 1: By the way, we're very thankful that you're.
- 37:45Speaker 2: You know, but I'm not saying you, but I'm just
- 37:47Speaker 2: saying I get it. You look at it like that.
- 37:48Speaker 3: It's like I'm enhancing your show. You're really not up
- 37:51Speaker 3: in my value of anything. So yeah, you have to
- 37:53Speaker 3: look at that and go like, and I'll say, you
- 37:56Speaker 3: give one of the other cast members to do that.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I'm not doing these shows.
- 37:59Speaker 1: You really, Oh yeah, but they at least present everything present.
- 38:02Speaker 2: I'll do that.
- 38:03Speaker 3: You know that, what's this one? I'll do the big ones.
- 38:05Speaker 3: But all those thousand podcasts that start requesting you no, no, no.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Well hey, that makes us more appreciative, That makes it more.
- 38:14Speaker 3: Always have a personal connection to it, or it's a
- 38:17Speaker 3: really good one, but everybody's got a podcast in their
- 38:20Speaker 3: garage somewhere, and it's like they're happy to give you.
- 38:24Speaker 2: And they got two thousand viewer listeners. You know what
- 38:27Speaker 2: I'm saying. It's like, that's that's me doing you a favor.
- 38:31Speaker 3: So when they have a project, you know, they were like,
- 38:33Speaker 3: we got to promote the show, I'll be like, get
- 38:35Speaker 3: one of the other cast members.
- 38:36Speaker 2: I'm not doing that.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Okay, but at least they represent all of them to you,
- 38:39Speaker 1: so you could cherry pick.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Well they do.
- 38:42Speaker 3: And sometimes they'll they I'll say this, they present what
- 38:46Speaker 3: they want to present to me. Yes, sometimes they will
- 38:49Speaker 3: veto it before it even gets to me, like, yeah,
- 38:51Speaker 3: we're not doing that.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I've seen posts do this. Yes, I'll be like, no,
- 38:56Speaker 1: we're not gonna we're not gonna even bring that to
- 38:58Speaker 1: the cast. You know, you know this is a sidebarn.
- 39:01Speaker 1: But I could still taste some of the garlic in
- 39:02Speaker 1: that marm.
- 39:03Speaker 3: You taste it, I'm still tasting it too.
- 39:06Speaker 1: I literally could take it good.
- 39:09Speaker 2: Imagine that marinate and overnight.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Yeah, but I could literally the audience what I told
- 39:13Speaker 1: her real quick.
- 39:14Speaker 3: So she doesn't have a grill, so I suggest that
- 39:16Speaker 3: she gets one of her cooking sheets. Line it with foil,
- 39:20Speaker 3: shake all the stuff off, like I said, lay it flat,
- 39:22Speaker 3: three hundred and fifty, three hundred and fifty, but watch
- 39:25Speaker 3: it because you don't want to get too dry, right,
- 39:27Speaker 3: flip it. I would say, like, that's chicken thighs and
- 39:29Speaker 3: breast on the breast.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, I hate.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Chicken breast by the way, I do too. I love it.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I love dark.
- 39:37Speaker 3: But anyway, just look at it and if one's done,
- 39:39Speaker 3: take it out, you know, let the others cook, but
- 39:41Speaker 3: just bake it and then still cook the marinad and
- 39:45Speaker 3: pour it on top.
- 39:47Speaker 2: It'll still worked out.
- 39:47Speaker 1: And you could do that with rice, vegetabat rice, whatever
- 39:50Speaker 1: you want. I feel like that would be great on
- 39:51Speaker 1: a salad too. That would be on a salad, right,
- 39:55Speaker 1: have you done it?
- 39:55Speaker 2: Though not on the salad, I have not see.
- 39:57Speaker 5: I just talked to something, you know, you know, invite
- 40:00Speaker 5: as usually I have like a lot of baronade because
- 40:04Speaker 5: I'll make more marinate and cook it and then the
- 40:06Speaker 5: chicken's on the platter and the marinate's all on it.
- 40:09Speaker 2: So you really get that merit, you really get that.
- 40:11Speaker 1: I love that.
- 40:12Speaker 2: But that would be great with rice though I think too.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Yeah, see I had the right ready, I had the
- 40:17Speaker 1: rice ready.
- 40:17Speaker 3: But I just want to share that with you guys
- 40:18Speaker 3: about how to do it if you didn't have a grilp.
- 40:20Speaker 1: But go ahead, what advice do you would you get
- 40:23Speaker 1: to aspiring actresses and people trying to entertain and get
- 40:28Speaker 1: into the entertainment business.
- 40:30Speaker 3: I get asked this question quite a bit, and there's
- 40:32Speaker 3: several things I always say. First of all, you got
- 40:33Speaker 3: to be You got to study. You know, I don't
- 40:37Speaker 3: care how cute you are. You just don't walk off
- 40:39Speaker 3: the street and become a good actress. It just and
- 40:42Speaker 3: you could have a natural flair for it. You know,
- 40:44Speaker 3: not everybody's born an actress. You know you gotta work
- 40:46Speaker 3: to it. But you don't think that you could just
- 40:49Speaker 3: be you and just yeah, don't work that way. You
- 40:51Speaker 3: gotta study. But the main thing I tell people stay ready,
- 40:53Speaker 3: to be ready? Now what does that mean? It means
- 40:55Speaker 3: different things to different people. You don't like your teeth,
- 40:58Speaker 3: maybe you feel like you're about ten pounds over weight,
- 41:01Speaker 3: you need to get something fixed on your face or
- 41:03Speaker 3: your your hair cut is not whatever that.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Means to you, do it?
- 41:07Speaker 3: Get it ready, because if you get an oper If
- 41:09Speaker 3: somebody calls you on Friday, they want you there on Monday,
- 41:11Speaker 3: You're not gonna lose that ten pounds over the weekend.
- 41:14Speaker 2: You're not gonna be able to get your teeth fixed
- 41:15Speaker 2: over there. You know what I'm saying.
- 41:16Speaker 3: It's like, so stay ready to be ready, and then
- 41:19Speaker 3: also me spiritually, mentally and with your craft, you know,
- 41:23Speaker 3: study so because sometimes that door opened this big and
- 41:28Speaker 3: if you could either bust it open and you could
- 41:30Speaker 3: fizz out andy be like this yel connext, or you
- 41:33Speaker 3: bust it out and you kill it.
- 41:35Speaker 2: But sometimes when that door's open, just to.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Crack, you got to be ready to go in. You
- 41:40Speaker 3: don't have time to get ready.
- 41:42Speaker 1: That's great advice. What made you put on the director
- 41:44Speaker 1: and producer hat?
- 41:45Speaker 3: It was a natural progression, you know, And actually I
- 41:49Speaker 3: realized I've been.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Directed for years.
- 41:52Speaker 3: One of the very things, very first thing that director
- 41:54Speaker 3: was a music video in the eighties, when the late eighties,
- 41:58Speaker 3: eighties min eighties, when I was doing dream Girls. One
- 42:03Speaker 3: of the singers she had released the songs she was
- 42:05Speaker 3: turning to an album, and I directed her music video.
- 42:08Speaker 2: This is when music videos first came out.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Oh wow, and I recently.
- 42:11Speaker 3: Ran across it and it actually wasn't that bad. I
- 42:13Speaker 3: was cracking up. But I choreographed it and I directed it.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Oh you did both? Yeah, wow, yeah wow.
- 42:20Speaker 3: So I've been, you know, doing it for a while,
- 42:22Speaker 3: you know, you realize. And also I used to choreograph
- 42:25Speaker 3: all the stuff in high school, all the big plays
- 42:28Speaker 3: in high school, I choreographed, like junior my senior year,
- 42:31Speaker 3: the spring musicals, I was the choreographer. And then I
- 42:34Speaker 3: was on the drill team and me and my girlfriend
- 42:36Speaker 3: used to choreograph all the routines. So I've been doing
- 42:38Speaker 3: this for years, you know. And that's why, you know,
- 42:41Speaker 3: young kids went they're doing stuff like this, don't take
- 42:43Speaker 3: it for granted, because what you're doing is you're training.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Yourself for later on. Yeah, it really is.
- 42:49Speaker 3: And then I directed like little podcasts, little you know,
- 42:54Speaker 3: the web web series and stuff.
- 42:56Speaker 2: And then I went on from there.
- 42:58Speaker 3: I started directing episodic and TV emil movies and so yes,
- 43:01Speaker 3: I just I've been doing it for a while, and
- 43:03Speaker 3: it was just a natural progression because I'm in front
- 43:06Speaker 3: of the camera so much and people.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Say, oh, I don't know if I could direct that.
- 43:10Speaker 3: See be surprised. You know more than you think you
- 43:12Speaker 3: know because you've been in the business. If you have
- 43:14Speaker 3: been in the business for a long time, and if
- 43:15Speaker 3: you have been in front of the camera, you have
- 43:17Speaker 3: absorbed so much. You know more than you think you know,
- 43:20Speaker 3: you know, and so when you get behind the camera,
- 43:22Speaker 3: it's just kind of awfuls into place and producing.
- 43:25Speaker 2: I love.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Producing is nothing other than just putting all the little
- 43:29Speaker 3: pieces together, the people together, getting everything flowing, getting everything done.
- 43:33Speaker 1: You know, does a producer always have to cut the
- 43:35Speaker 1: check though, or do you go out and raise.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Well, depends. When you're a one man show, you're the
- 43:39Speaker 3: producer's cut the check, raising campble doing the schedule. Yeah, exactly,
- 43:45Speaker 3: hire the people.
- 43:46Speaker 2: It just depends. You know.
- 43:47Speaker 3: I've been a one man show a lot, so I've done.
- 43:50Speaker 3: But when I work for networks and I do TV movies, no,
- 43:52Speaker 3: I'm just I'm a director. I get producer credit because
- 43:55Speaker 3: I also, you know, have a lot of saying of
- 43:58Speaker 3: the elements that go into the filming to the movie.
- 44:01Speaker 2: But I don't do all the work.
- 44:03Speaker 3: Because those people they've hire people to do off those
- 44:05Speaker 3: line producers.
- 44:06Speaker 1: And is that something you also negotiating your contracts, like
- 44:09Speaker 1: I want to produce a credit definitely most does that
- 44:11Speaker 1: help you on the back end, though, when you get
- 44:13Speaker 1: a producer.
- 44:13Speaker 3: It does because you get producer credit. You get done
- 44:16Speaker 3: on the credit, but you get paid as.
- 44:17Speaker 1: A producer, okay, in addition to.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Addition to acting.
- 44:20Speaker 3: And then also you know, you got production credit. Then
- 44:24Speaker 3: once you get that set up, when you get other projects,
- 44:27Speaker 3: it's kind of like your norm. They have to respect
- 44:29Speaker 3: that she's going to be a producer on this as well,
- 44:31Speaker 3: because that's just what she does, Okay.
- 44:33Speaker 1: And then I but you're not writing though.
- 44:36Speaker 2: I don't really.
- 44:36Speaker 3: I mean, I write privately, but I'm not like, yeah,
- 44:41Speaker 3: but that's not to say it won't happen.
- 44:43Speaker 2: But I do write.
- 44:44Speaker 1: I feel like it's gonna happen in your future, your creative.
- 44:46Speaker 2: It needs to.
- 44:48Speaker 3: And I need to get off my ass and get
- 44:49Speaker 3: some stuff finished, so that too.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, And I'm hopefully we'll see you in the
- 44:56Speaker 1: podcast space you did.
- 44:59Speaker 2: George, I already did.
- 45:00Speaker 3: I had episodes you gotta go, you gotta here go
- 45:04Speaker 3: do you go to h in the Company of Friends
- 45:06Speaker 3: dot tv And you can see my uh my wepisode
- 45:11Speaker 3: that I did, my web series that I did this
- 45:12Speaker 3: called In the Company of Friends and it's a dinner
- 45:14Speaker 3: party show. I did that, and then I also did
- 45:18Speaker 3: that So Very Fanessa, which was a podcast, and I
- 45:21Speaker 3: did one hundred episodes from Debbie Allen to the Toy
- 45:25Speaker 3: to who else?
- 45:27Speaker 2: Who?
- 45:27Speaker 1: Did you guys want to see those episodes?
- 45:29Speaker 2: Oh?
- 45:30Speaker 1: My god?
- 45:30Speaker 2: Every who else?
- 45:31Speaker 3: I mean so many people, NFL people for super Bowl people,
- 45:35Speaker 3: all kind of stars.
- 45:37Speaker 2: I can't even think.
- 45:38Speaker 1: And you you produced that show, and I produced that
- 45:40Speaker 1: show and directed that, booked.
- 45:43Speaker 2: The talent and did the interviews.
- 45:46Speaker 1: I think it's time to re release a hundred of
- 45:48Speaker 1: them I did. Yeah, that's a lot of work.
- 45:51Speaker 3: That's a lot of work in my own web series
- 45:54Speaker 3: I did, I did, I had, I had my husband
- 45:57Speaker 3: doing craft service child.
- 45:58Speaker 1: That's hilarious. That's hilarious, hilarious, hilarious, hilarious. How did you
- 46:14Speaker 1: find mother being a mother, actress, director, producer, Like, what
- 46:19Speaker 1: was the hardest part of those jobs? In juggling it?
- 46:21Speaker 1: You very supportive, you know, And and that's the only
- 46:29Speaker 1: reason I could do it, because he took on some
- 46:31Speaker 1: of the and he was always encouraging do it, do it.
- 46:33Speaker 2: So the kids were smaller and I'm running around here.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Doing podcasts and web series and acting and and then
- 46:40Speaker 3: you know, because if you're not busy, super busy, then
- 46:42Speaker 3: you fill your life up with that and that that
- 46:44Speaker 3: becomes your project for that moment, so you keep your
- 46:46Speaker 3: creative juices flowing and you keep everything out there. I
- 46:49Speaker 3: actually got distribution for that web series. I actually got that,
- 46:54Speaker 3: got a little bit of money for that. But I
- 46:56Speaker 3: just did it, and I was I was one of
- 46:58Speaker 3: the lucky ones because I had my might, moved my
- 47:01Speaker 3: mother here, my husband, so I had people that can help.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Me get a little village village.
- 47:06Speaker 2: And people that I was one of the lucky ones.
- 47:08Speaker 1: What's like, would you say is the downside to the
- 47:11Speaker 1: industry If you had to say.
- 47:14Speaker 2: There's a lot of downsides.
- 47:15Speaker 3: But I still think that the equality is not quite
- 47:20Speaker 3: where it should be.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Between male and female or races.
- 47:23Speaker 3: I'm gonna say it's several. It's racists male and female,
- 47:28Speaker 3: and agism is horrible. Agis agism is horrible in our industry.
- 47:32Speaker 3: Nobody talks about that.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Yeah you would, But I see the way I look
- 47:37Speaker 1: at acting, and I'm definitely naive, guys, because I don't
- 47:40Speaker 1: know that much about it. But I always assumed it's
- 47:43Speaker 1: like they cast for a certain look and feel you.
- 47:46Speaker 1: I'm looking at you a person you're looking, but the
- 47:49Speaker 1: thing is extremely young.
- 47:50Speaker 3: They you know, they're always they've gotten a little bit better,
- 47:53Speaker 3: but they always only want young projects. So it's kind
- 47:55Speaker 3: of like when people get just like, what are we
- 47:58Speaker 3: supposed to go out the pasture and die? You know,
- 48:01Speaker 3: when women get in our in our fifties or so,
- 48:05Speaker 3: you know, they now it's a little better. They are
- 48:08Speaker 3: hiring older women. You know, look at somebody like Glenn
- 48:11Speaker 3: Close was still killing it. But that's that's not always
- 48:14Speaker 3: a normal.
- 48:15Speaker 1: So say someone like you, are they looking at okay,
- 48:17Speaker 1: this is your age, or they look at you because
- 48:19Speaker 1: you look I'm feel.
- 48:20Speaker 2: They look at you.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Sometimes they look at the they look at me to say,
- 48:24Speaker 3: oh she could play that although technically on paper she's older,
- 48:27Speaker 3: but she looks like she could be that woman.
- 48:29Speaker 2: Okay, they are doing it, and then they'll say, oh.
- 48:31Speaker 3: She's the right age for the character because her characters
- 48:34Speaker 3: same age.
- 48:35Speaker 2: So I think it goes both ways.
- 48:36Speaker 3: But my point is we got to get a lot
- 48:39Speaker 3: of roles so we could do that right. Yeah, yeah,
- 48:41Speaker 3: you know, everybody ain't just twenty and thirty and forty forever.
- 48:44Speaker 1: So you're saying like most of the writings are for
- 48:46Speaker 1: that younger demo. Yeah, I saw. Did you watch the
- 48:50Speaker 1: Marlon Wayne's interview with them when he talked about John Witherspoon, No,
- 48:53Speaker 1: I didn't about Well, Marlon Wayne's had said how he
- 48:55Speaker 1: had like him and his brother had fought for John
- 48:58Speaker 1: Witherspoon to be his his dad on the show. But
- 49:01Speaker 1: when you watch that show, which I was a huge
- 49:03Speaker 1: fan of that show back then, it was like these
- 49:05Speaker 1: two young guys, they were cute, but John Witherspoon was
- 49:08Speaker 1: this older guy that they cast. But he literally was
- 49:11Speaker 1: like a big deal in the show. Every time he
- 49:13Speaker 1: stepped on seeing and he was older. You know, you
- 49:17Speaker 1: know what I mean.
- 49:18Speaker 2: It's about the work you bring. You know, it's about
- 49:20Speaker 2: the work you bring.
- 49:21Speaker 3: I mean, if you could bring what's needed and deliver,
- 49:24Speaker 3: that's what's important.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Now with the agism, do you feel pressure to do
- 49:27Speaker 1: like all the things to make.
- 49:29Speaker 2: You look younger.
- 49:29Speaker 3: No, I mean I just make myself look young as
- 49:31Speaker 3: I'm vain. You are goody goes a long way. I
- 49:36Speaker 3: mean as far as exercises right, taking care of my
- 49:39Speaker 3: skin I.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Mean I do that anyway.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Do you know do you and other black actresses try
- 49:44Speaker 1: to stick together when it comes to pricing, because I
- 49:46Speaker 1: heard Gabrielle Union talk about that.
- 49:49Speaker 3: I mean, I think that depends now because like my
- 49:53Speaker 3: friends and I earned doing the same projects. So I'm
- 49:56Speaker 3: not pricing. It's none their business what I'm making. It's
- 49:58Speaker 3: none of my business what they're making.
- 50:00Speaker 2: But if you were.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Doing a project together, you know it's okay to say, hey, girl,
- 50:04Speaker 3: make sure they give you da da da da da,
- 50:06Speaker 3: because you know, I think it's okay to checking with
- 50:08Speaker 3: if you're friendly.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Like that, because also that could backfire on you too.
- 50:12Speaker 1: She putting up a person it could Oh yeah, that
- 50:15Speaker 1: could definitely, you know. But you know, how there is
- 50:18Speaker 1: even you have mentioned like they have their there was
- 50:20Speaker 1: a particular point where they had their five girls or
- 50:23Speaker 1: their three girls that they were there. That's who they're
- 50:25Speaker 1: gonna go to for this role. I think Gabrielle Union
- 50:28Speaker 1: had addressed like how they went to They she knew, Okay,
- 50:31Speaker 1: if I'd say this number, they're gonna go and call
- 50:34Speaker 1: the next girl, and the next girl and the next girl.
- 50:35Speaker 1: So she got all three all all the girls online like,
- 50:38Speaker 1: let's just stick with this number. You know this number
- 50:41Speaker 1: if you know those people well enough to do that,
- 50:44Speaker 1: you know, But what's their incentive?
- 50:45Speaker 3: Is like, well, because if you turn it down, then
- 50:47Speaker 3: they coming to me. Yeah, you know, I'm having a
- 50:50Speaker 3: piece of hair on my Facebook. Take it off, you know,
- 50:51Speaker 3: So what's her incentive? Just to stick to your number?
- 50:54Speaker 3: Then theyga just gonna come back to you and give
- 50:56Speaker 3: it to you.
- 50:56Speaker 2: I mean, I hear what.
- 50:57Speaker 1: She's saying, but it could easily.
- 51:00Speaker 3: Because it's like, although you're close that number two, and
- 51:05Speaker 3: they listen, she wants.
- 51:05Speaker 2: That job too.
- 51:06Speaker 3: Of course she may need the job, needed, wanted whatever.
- 51:10Speaker 3: So if you're like ten thousand, five thousand away and
- 51:14Speaker 3: they just dig their heirs and say no, we're not
- 51:15Speaker 3: giving you an extra ten thousand, you can't call the
- 51:18Speaker 3: other person say turn down that job because they're not
- 51:19Speaker 3: give me the ten thousand. Because another person admit that
- 51:23Speaker 3: whatever that is might be good for them right now,
- 51:25Speaker 3: they're like, Okay, this is five thousand or seven thousand
- 51:28Speaker 3: less than ten thousand. You're gonna pay Gabby, But I
- 51:31Speaker 3: kind of want that job. I want the part, and
- 51:33Speaker 3: I'll take it. So I get what she's saying, but
- 51:36Speaker 3: you calling those other people said that if you all
- 51:39Speaker 3: like are doing, are you already cast in a movie
- 51:42Speaker 3: that's different, See the three people are cast for a
- 51:44Speaker 3: different parts, then you stick together, like, hey, let's make
- 51:47Speaker 3: them pay us because because whoever number one is gonna
- 51:49Speaker 3: get more.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Than number three. That's just that's just where that is.
- 51:52Speaker 3: So you could say, hey, then people don't want to
- 51:55Speaker 3: tell you what they're making. Do That's the other thing too,
- 51:56Speaker 3: People don't want to tell you what they're making. But
- 51:58Speaker 3: you can stick together, like make sure we get all
- 52:00Speaker 3: of the amenities and stuff that we want. But if
- 52:02Speaker 3: you're not cast and they're gonna look at the three
- 52:04Speaker 3: of us for this one role and we all say, okay,
- 52:07Speaker 3: we're not gonna do it for less than one hundred
- 52:09Speaker 3: thousand dollars, what is there?
- 52:11Speaker 2: I don't you know what I'm saying.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it makes sense.
- 52:13Speaker 2: They'll go back to number one.
- 52:16Speaker 3: But why is number two saying I'm doing I'm not
- 52:18Speaker 3: gonna do it less for one hundred thousand, Because then
- 52:20Speaker 3: number three says I'm not gonna do less for one
- 52:22Speaker 3: hundred thousand. Then they're gonna go to number four and
- 52:24Speaker 3: she'll say I'll take the seventy five thousand.
- 52:26Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:27Speaker 3: So now three people just got out of a job
- 52:30Speaker 3: and I'm just saying no, and I understand your argument,
- 52:34Speaker 3: and I understand what you're trying to fight for. But
- 52:37Speaker 3: that fourth person is taking that job because she needs it,
- 52:40Speaker 3: and she's gonna like that's seventy five thousand.
- 52:42Speaker 2: I'm just using these as numbers.
- 52:43Speaker 3: You know that seventy five thousand sounds good to be
- 52:46Speaker 3: or that eighty thousand because they're gonna hold off for
- 52:48Speaker 3: twenty thousand, all three of them.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Now, if you had to choose between a role that
- 52:55Speaker 1: is a script that's really amazing, maybe you are the lead,
- 53:01Speaker 1: maybe or not, but it's a really amazing script that
- 53:03Speaker 1: doesn't have the budget that you want, or a script
- 53:06Speaker 1: that has a huge budget but you don't like the script.
- 53:08Speaker 3: There's no no where you're going with this. There's three reasons.
- 53:10Speaker 3: I take a job. Okay, I take a job because
- 53:14Speaker 3: the script is incredible. The money may suck, sometimes the
- 53:17Speaker 3: money is decent, but the script is good. The part
- 53:20Speaker 3: is something I just feel like I have to do.
- 53:23Speaker 3: I take a job because the people involved. This is
- 53:25Speaker 3: a camp I want to get in or camp of
- 53:28Speaker 3: people that have supported me that I like, or you know,
- 53:32Speaker 3: just I finally broke into this camp and the money
- 53:35Speaker 3: can sometimes be decent, great or whatever. Or I take
- 53:39Speaker 3: it because the money is fucking good and I want
- 53:43Speaker 3: the money at this point, the job could be.
- 53:47Speaker 2: You know. So there's three reasons that I take a job.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Those are good reasons.
- 53:51Speaker 2: Those are and there's reason. You'll look up, it'll be
- 53:53Speaker 2: two out of three.
- 53:54Speaker 3: It's a good camp and it's a great role, but
- 53:57Speaker 3: the money may suck because it's independent, or it's a
- 54:00Speaker 3: great you know role the money's decent or the you know,
- 54:04Speaker 3: you're in the good camp and the money's decent, but
- 54:07Speaker 3: the roles okay, you know it just it's.
- 54:09Speaker 1: Just do you also look at the distribution and all
- 54:11Speaker 1: of that when you're looking at it too, But you
- 54:13Speaker 1: know you do.
- 54:13Speaker 3: But once you get in bed with people, I assume
- 54:16Speaker 3: that if I'm in bed with you know, the independent
- 54:19Speaker 3: stuff sometimes you have to look out for.
- 54:21Speaker 2: But if I'm doing them.
- 54:22Speaker 3: I just finished the movie with Sony that Kicky Palmer
- 54:25Speaker 3: and siss it was it.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Well, I know that they're.
- 54:27Speaker 3: Gonna try to kill it with that. I ain't got
- 54:28Speaker 3: to worry about that. I went to work, did my thing.
- 54:32Speaker 3: They already did a cut out here. The cuts good
- 54:33Speaker 3: out here.
- 54:34Speaker 2: I'm good in it. So that's all I care about.
- 54:35Speaker 2: It is I called me when you need me, what
- 54:37Speaker 2: you're gonna do?
- 54:38Speaker 1: I like that.
- 54:38Speaker 2: The money was and then that's a great example. The
- 54:41Speaker 2: money sucked. The money. I'm just to be honest.
- 54:44Speaker 3: The money sucked. But it was a project I wanted
- 54:46Speaker 3: to be.
- 54:47Speaker 2: A part of for a lot of reasons, so I
- 54:48Speaker 2: took the job.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Yeah, you you look at it from all angles. You're
- 54:51Speaker 1: a businesswoman, actress directly, because sometimes.
- 54:55Speaker 2: What I can't get from you now, I can get
- 54:56Speaker 2: it from you later.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I agree, you know I agree. So how
- 55:01Speaker 1: can everyone keep up with you? And can you tell
- 55:03Speaker 1: us what projects you have coming out to that camera?
- 55:06Speaker 2: Well, yeah, the Black Hamptons.
- 55:07Speaker 3: We're going to go back shooting that in the next month,
- 55:10Speaker 3: and then I'm going back on The Vince Staples Show
- 55:12Speaker 3: season two. I have a Christmas movie coming out called
- 55:16Speaker 3: The Queens of Christmas.
- 55:17Speaker 2: I'm quite sure when that's gonna air.
- 55:19Speaker 3: And then, as I just said, I did the Scissa
- 55:21Speaker 3: and Kiki Palmer movie. I think that's coming out next spring.
- 55:25Speaker 3: But you can see me on Vanessabel Callaway. That's my Instagram.
- 55:28Speaker 3: I don't do Twitter anymore. It's just now X it
- 55:31Speaker 3: got on my nerves.
- 55:31Speaker 2: I'll stop that.
- 55:34Speaker 3: I don't do Facebook, but my Twitter goes to my Facebook.
- 55:37Speaker 3: I hate Facebook. I'm sorry what I hate Facebook?
- 55:40Speaker 1: That's just what about TikTok's out?
- 55:43Speaker 3: Nah?
- 55:43Speaker 2: I mean TikTok.
- 55:44Speaker 3: I haven't really gotten into it that much, you know,
- 55:46Speaker 3: but I'll.
- 55:48Speaker 2: Make it more into that.
- 55:49Speaker 3: And I don't mind TikTok, but I just some of
- 55:51Speaker 3: my Facebook I just never liked.
- 55:53Speaker 2: Really all my nerves, I still it's just all is.
- 55:58Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just it's spy on all your people you
- 56:01Speaker 5: went to high school with.
- 56:02Speaker 3: It's like all this other miscellaneous stuff. So do I
- 56:06Speaker 3: have fan pages for face so you can't go on
- 56:09Speaker 3: Facebook because whatever I post on Instagram goes to Facebook?
- 56:12Speaker 2: Bright, Yeah.
- 56:14Speaker 3: They. Then I have a website that needs to be updated,
- 56:17Speaker 3: but you can go to Vannicsiuvill Gallaway dot.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Com and then you go in the Company of Friends dot.
- 56:20Speaker 3: Tv and you can see my That's a very nest
- 56:22Speaker 3: podcast and my Intercompany of Friends, my web series that
- 56:26Speaker 3: I did before everybody was doing them. I did this
- 56:29Speaker 3: stuff before everybody, way before everybody else started. Now everybody
- 56:34Speaker 3: does it, but I did it way before everybody else
- 56:36Speaker 3: was doing it.
- 56:37Speaker 1: I feel like you could recycle some of that content.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Well, we'll talk curious.
- 56:40Speaker 1: I'm curious.
- 56:41Speaker 2: We'll talk about it.
- 56:42Speaker 1: And then is there any person that you worked with
- 56:44Speaker 1: that you could give us just a fun tidbit that
- 56:47Speaker 1: you that you recollect something that would be kind of
- 56:51Speaker 1: just fun and entertaining.
- 56:52Speaker 2: Really, no, not off the top of my head. I
- 56:55Speaker 2: just had had fun every time I work.
- 56:57Speaker 3: You know, sometimes I'm lucky and I've worked with people
- 57:00Speaker 3: more than once. We get along, we have a great time.
- 57:03Speaker 3: Some projects are a lot of fun.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Some projects you just go to work, do and leave.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Do you like working alongside comedians more than other people, because.
- 57:11Speaker 2: I like working alongside actress actress.
- 57:14Speaker 3: Comedians can be very interesting to work with because they
- 57:18Speaker 3: love them, but they.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Some of them a little ad d.
- 57:26Speaker 1: You're like, I want to get through today, right exactly,
- 57:29Speaker 1: and they're just and they go they go off and
- 57:31Speaker 1: they want to tell all these stories and they want
- 57:33Speaker 1: to do their stand up comedy for the crew because
- 57:36Speaker 1: they're always on.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Okay, they're always on which is great.
- 57:40Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not, you know, saying anything bad about
- 57:42Speaker 3: my brothers and sisters and the comedians. But sometimes it's
- 57:45Speaker 3: actually I'm like, can we get to this scene so
- 57:48Speaker 3: I could go home, Let's go stop talking and do
- 57:52Speaker 3: the lines, let's hit it.
- 57:54Speaker 1: I could see that. I could see that. So you
- 57:57Speaker 1: like work alongside professional actresses and actors.
- 58:01Speaker 3: It's fun if you're doing a movie that's a comedy
- 58:03Speaker 3: and you're with a comedian, because they're gonna be fresh
- 58:05Speaker 3: and they're gonna be you kinda look like calle Berry.
- 58:07Speaker 2: I'm looking at it, tell you that a lot. Yeah,
- 58:09Speaker 2: like Cali Berry anyway, but yeah, she's beautiful.
- 58:13Speaker 3: But there's like sometimes like if you're doing a comedy
- 58:17Speaker 3: and you're in the scene with a comedian, that's great
- 58:20Speaker 3: because they're gonna give you a lot the feed off
- 58:22Speaker 3: of because they're gonna add lib. You get to add lib.
- 58:24Speaker 3: But it's gonna be that's gonna be great. But if
- 58:27Speaker 3: like I've done movies and the they just can't some
- 58:29Speaker 3: of them just can't focus and just can't come down
- 58:33Speaker 3: and focus on that scene.
- 58:36Speaker 2: I could see that.
- 58:37Speaker 1: I can only imagine. And then I had a producer
- 58:41Speaker 1: come in and you know, he was saying that if
- 58:43Speaker 1: you write one word on a song, uh, then you
- 58:46Speaker 1: could technically qualify for like a writer credit if you
- 58:49Speaker 1: even do. But when you add in a movie or
- 58:51Speaker 1: a show, you don't get nothing. Okay, that was it.
- 58:56Speaker 1: Thank you so much for for feeding my daughter me
- 58:59Speaker 1: the week. I will tell you how that dish came out.
- 59:03Speaker 1: But tasting the marinade alone, you're gonna make it. I'm
- 59:06Speaker 1: gonna make it. To be honest, I low key really
- 59:09Speaker 1: think I'm gonna buy a grill and try to grill
- 59:11Speaker 1: it because for some strange reason, I feel like it's
- 59:14Speaker 1: gonna taste really good.
- 59:15Speaker 2: Oh it's gonna take.
- 59:16Speaker 3: And let me tell you, everybody, you can put this
- 59:18Speaker 3: a ziplock and you could last in refrigerator two days
- 59:20Speaker 3: before you cook. It's gonna be just fine.
- 59:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna do that. I'm gonna try and wait at
- 59:24Speaker 1: least twenty four hours.
- 59:25Speaker 3: But I only wanted to sit up in that and
- 59:26Speaker 3: then then every now and again, go on you refrigerator
- 59:28Speaker 3: and bullsh it up.
- 59:29Speaker 1: And change the sides, okay, you know, and then do
- 59:32Speaker 1: I take the You ever see when they get the grill,
- 59:34Speaker 1: they have the little paintbrush.
- 59:35Speaker 3: After I do the boiling a new grill, you gotta
- 59:40Speaker 3: get that top so the chicken doesn't stick. There's ways
- 59:43Speaker 3: people do it. Some people take an onion and do
- 59:46Speaker 3: the grates.
- 59:47Speaker 2: You know. Some people do that.
- 59:49Speaker 3: You might want to brush it with a little pam
- 59:51Speaker 3: or a little something, because when you get a new grill,
- 59:54Speaker 3: you just don't want to throw meat and stuff on
- 59:55Speaker 3: it because it's just gonna tear up your meat and
- 59:57Speaker 3: your fish because of the grates are good. I did
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: not know that, so I could do onion or Yeah,
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: some people take an onion, okay, and then just go
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: and then just go through like over, like back and
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: forth a lot.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: You know, you should definitely be doing a cooking show.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: I had one, Yeah, you one.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: The show had girl had a night nightmare with an editor.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: And this show never really got out because I fell
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: out with this editor. It was called cooking and hook
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: it up how to have a meal for fifty dollars
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: or less for young people.
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: Okay, that's great, it was great too.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: So what happened?
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: I did all these shows and then the editor based
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: hijacked my stuff.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: It was girl. Oh. A couple of shows, A couple
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: of shows I was able to get out, but it
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: was I.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Would have Kanye. You ever seen the episode with Kanye
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: they try to pull an ash because they try to
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: pull something on him. He grabbed his footage and ran.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: That would have been me. Yeah, I be like, you
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: gonna give me my footage?
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: But it was.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: But that's just a good hack right there, Like to
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: do that. But I'm gonna get th gril. I plan
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: on doing this for real. I'm gonna get the girl
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: do the onion thing and then just get a little
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: spam or something. But do I take the little paintbrush
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: and then like after I boil the or like what
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: do you cure thet all the thing?
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: Now?
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: And if you want to do you know, like say,
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: if you decide you want to add some chicken to this,
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: I would make a little bit more of the baronade
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: and that right, and you just add it to the chicken.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: But then then in the plastic bag, you're gonna do
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: this and try to get all of that good stuff. Yeah,
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: you'll turn it inside out. You have to, girl, Like
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: I put on my plastic gloves. I don't leave noney
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: to get all that good stuff into your bath and
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: then taste it a little bit more soft. Let me
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: add a little bit more terioki, oh, let me add
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: a little more garlic powder. Well, taste it right, okay,
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: and then after you you grill it. No, you don't
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: have to paint it on there. Just get it boiling
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: and take that hot little pot you know you.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: Need a little pot.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: Yeah, a big pot, and just on top the chicken,
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: and then get your spatulattle and scrap.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: You're hilarious.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: You and this.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Don't waste nothing.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: I don't waste nothing. Don't waste nothing.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: This was the great interview. Thank you so much for
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: your time, Vanessa.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: I really pre sure. Yeah yeah, Now I gotta go
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: home and eat. I'm hungry little.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now, I promise you I'm gonna
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: take full credit for this, and I do that sometimes
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: you should.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: I'll be like, I'm gonna tell you this too.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: Any dish that you like, make it at least once
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: a month, and it will become your own because you'll practice,
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: you'll decide. You know what, I wonder what would happen
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: if I add Probably nothing, but it's just gonna add
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: to it. And if the more you do it, the
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: you know, the better you become at making it, and
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: you'll make it quicker, and you'll know the flavors that
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: you want, and so it will become yours.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: You will take credit for it.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: Have you?
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: This is sidebarring it. But my mom was in town,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: so I was like, you have to make us to
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: making food like enough to last a week. So my
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: mom I noticed she washes all her chicken with vinegar.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Oh I don't. I just wash my chicken real good.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: But I actually think it may actually make it good. Yeah,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Like I low key in the back of my mind,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: I'm like, I think I'm gonna to steal that from
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: her because I think it makes a difference a little bit.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: It did, but it just I don't know.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: I just washed it real good. I get a knife
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: and I go through and I clean everything, and I
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: washed it real good.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Dry.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: I've remembered the pets that dry season, and I never
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: had a look at I'm never looking at Boudy towels
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: the same after this.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Thank you guys. Peace out.
