- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. We've got a fun episode that
- 0:19we're going to be looking at today.
- 0:21And Psalm 142 says this as its inscription, a mass skill of
- 0:26David when he was in The Cave, a prayer.
- 0:30So if you will, this is a caveman Psalm.
- 0:33And this was written during a really, really dark period in
- 0:38David's life when he was literally being hunted like an
- 0:41animal by his own government, by his own father-in-law.
- 0:47And so if you think your family situation is not so, I promise
- 0:51you it's not quite as crazy as David's family situation at this
- 0:58point in time. So let's read through the Psalm
- 1:01together and see what the Lord has.
- 1:03Verse #1 I cry aloud to Yahweh. I plead aloud to Yahweh for
- 1:08mercy. I pour out my complaint before
- 1:11Him. I reveal my trouble to Him.
- 1:14Although my spirit is weak within me, you know my way along
- 1:19this path I travel. They've hidden a trap for me.
- 1:22Look to the right and see no one stands up for me.
- 1:26There is no refuge for me. No one cares about me.
- 1:30I cry to you, Yahweh, I say, you are my shelter, my portion in
- 1:34the land of the living. Listen to my cry, for I am very
- 1:39weak. Rescue me from those who pursue
- 1:41me, for they are too strong for me.
- 1:44Free me from prison so that I can praise your name.
- 1:48The righteous will gather around me because you deal generously
- 1:52with me. So kind of a shorter Psalm for
- 1:56today and just the seven verses I think has some wonderful
- 2:02truths for us. Some some comfort about where we
- 2:05are in the sight and estimation of God, even as we look at
- 2:09Jesus's ancestor, his physical ancestor, David and what he went
- 2:14through in verses one and two. He says, I cry aloud to Yahweh.
- 2:19I plead aloud to Yahweh for mercy.
- 2:22What kind of strikes me as I look at that is, you know, God
- 2:26hears our silent prayers. He hears the prayers that we
- 2:29just say in our heads. But there is something special
- 2:33about saying your prayers out loud.
- 2:37I won't venture to to say anything like, OK, if you say
- 2:41your prayers out loud, man, God will really listen to you.
- 2:44If you really want God to answer, say your prayers out
- 2:47loud. I don't think it's anything like
- 2:48that. I think it invites humility for
- 2:54us that when we just pray in our heads, sometimes it can seem
- 3:00less daunting. It can seem less like we're
- 3:06taking a stand. Amongst others.
- 3:09I was at AI forget if it was a men's thing, it might have been
- 3:14a pastors conference that my state convention had put on at
- 3:19the beginning of December. And at that, at that meeting,
- 3:25one of the guys that was there, that was a church planter now
- 3:30has been serving in our state convention for a couple of
- 3:32years. His name is Dan Heun and he is a
- 3:37Korean American. I don't want to say pastor.
- 3:42He might actually be an elder at at his church, though.
- 3:45Right now the the village church and what they do in Korea is
- 3:52everyone prays when they pray. Everyone's praying out loud at
- 3:59the same time. So a lot of times in our
- 4:01services at Tabernacle, we'll have times, you know, designated
- 4:05for prayer. And we have someone that opens
- 4:07the service in a word of prayer after a scripture reading.
- 4:11And we have, I, I'll mention some prayer needs for our church
- 4:19and we'll pray over some of those.
- 4:22I pray before the message is given before the sermon and
- 4:27someone prays to end our our service as well as there's a
- 4:33prayer at the conclusion of the message during kind of a time of
- 4:37invitation. And so we we love prayer here at
- 4:41Tabernacle. That's an important thing.
- 4:43Jesus says that his house is to be a House of prayer.
- 4:46And so that's a really, really valuable thing.
- 4:49But man, being able to in that pastors conference here as Dan
- 4:55Young encouraged us as pastors to pray aloud our, our, our
- 5:01prayer request. It was humbling, it was
- 5:06encouraging, it was motivating and heartening to be able to
- 5:11hear dozens of pastors all across the room just pour out
- 5:16their hearts to God. And I love if I could, you know,
- 5:20just snap my fingers, man, I would love to do that with our,
- 5:24our prayer time at, at at Tabernacle.
- 5:27I know part of it's like cultural and because that's the
- 5:31culture in Korea, they're able to do that in a lot of times.
- 5:35But being able to pray aloud to the Lord is a good practice.
- 5:40Sometimes, especially when I'm by myself, I'll pray aloud to
- 5:45God. I don't I don't know if it maybe
- 5:49if someone you know, was watching or listening in, they
- 5:51might be like, all right, I feel like this dude is, you know,
- 5:54kind of sort of talking to himself, but he's talking to,
- 5:58you know, his God. And for me, it's just enjoyable.
- 6:04I do want to say, and here is David is in this time of
- 6:07trouble. He says God, I'm saying it
- 6:10aloud. And I'm trapped in all of these
- 6:12situations. And I've got a couple hundred
- 6:15men that are traveling with me that, you know, they're by my
- 6:19side. But for the most part, my whole
- 6:22country has abandoned me and branded me kind of a traitor.
- 6:27And David says, God, I'm going to speak my prayers aloud to
- 6:32you. Can I encourage you, whether
- 6:35it's, you know, if you pray before a meal, pray aloud to the
- 6:38Lord. If you are in your car and
- 6:41you're driving to work, pray aloud to the Lord.
- 6:44And it can be something that is enjoyable.
- 6:48It makes you realize that you are talking to a person, that
- 6:53God is not just thoughts in your head, but he is a real person.
- 6:57And so you can speak to him and he hears you.
- 7:01And when you speak to him, when you cry, when you plead, you can
- 7:05know that God hears you. Now for, you know, maybe people
- 7:09that are mute and you cannot speak aloud, God still hears
- 7:13their prayers just as much as anyone else's.
- 7:17And so it's not something that you have to do or that if you do
- 7:22it, God gives you, you know, he'll listen to a little more or
- 7:25he'll give you more yeses to your prayers if you say it
- 7:28aloud. But I think from these verses,
- 7:31from many other portions of Scripture, I think it's a good
- 7:33thing to do to pray aloud. Verse #2 I pour out my complaint
- 7:38before Him. I reveal my trouble to him.
- 7:41Did you know that you can complain to God, if you will,
- 7:44using some of the common vernacular?
- 7:47You can be a Karen to God, that you can say, listen, Lord, you
- 7:53don't understand. I have this wonderful plan for
- 7:57how my finances were going to go in February.
- 8:00And then this hit and this hit, and I didn't realize that we
- 8:04were going to have an eternal winter that was happening with,
- 8:08you know, giant mounds of icy snow everywhere.
- 8:12And so that made this problem and this problem, and I had to
- 8:15get this. God, what in the world are you
- 8:17doing? We can bring our complaints to
- 8:19God. Now don't do it.
- 8:23I would encourage you. Don't do it disrespectfully.
- 8:25Don't do it like OK God, I'm, you know, 1 bad thing away from
- 8:28giving up on you. But we can genuinely like bring
- 8:32our complaints to the Master and he hears about us and he cares
- 8:35about us. Now do it in a way that you are
- 8:39actually seeking the work of God.
- 8:44Do not do it in such a way that you are like the children of
- 8:48Israel that as Paul reflecting on and then Philippians says, do
- 8:54everything without murmuring or complaining.
- 8:58We should not have a spirit that goes, man, I'm just so ticked
- 9:02off at God. But we can bring our complaints
- 9:05to God. He's the only one, if you will.
- 9:07He's the only one that deserves to hear our complaints about
- 9:13him. Other people can't do anything
- 9:16for us when our need is to go to God.
- 9:21Let me put it this way. So at Tabernacle, if someone was
- 9:25like, you know, had had something that they wanted
- 9:30changed about, you know, the sermon, well, they could go talk
- 9:35to, you know, my friend Dina Wassmer.
- 9:38They could be like, man, I really think the sermon would be
- 9:41so much better if he did, If Brian did this, this, this and
- 9:44this, and Dina might go, man, those are some wonderful ideas.
- 9:48I really like that, But nothing would change because Dina can't
- 9:52do anything about the preaching because Dina is not preaching.
- 9:55Or someone could go to, you know, Doctor Ron Smith and be
- 9:59like, man, I just really think the piano would be much better
- 10:07if we put this electronic component on it and we dialed in
- 10:13this thing and we did this for it.
- 10:15And that would make the piano so much better.
- 10:17And Doctor Ron Smith would be like, sure, I, I don't know a
- 10:22lot about, you know, the specifics of what you're talking
- 10:24about. But yeah, that sounds
- 10:25interesting because Doctor Ron Smith isn't the one that's
- 10:29playing the piano. He's not, you know, one of the
- 10:33sound booth guys. He is not on the music team.
- 10:37And so he can't really do anything about that.
- 10:40And so often we can complain about our circumstances to other
- 10:46people when other people cannot change our circumstances.
- 10:51The only one that can, you know, transform our lives, the one
- 10:56that knows all of the difficulties that we are facing
- 11:00is God. And so when we bring our
- 11:02complaints to God to say, God, I need you to work, I need you to
- 11:06save, I need mercy, I need you to care because people are
- 11:11against me, because there's hardships, because I'm reaching,
- 11:14you know, kind of rock bottom. I don't have any money left.
- 11:18Bring it to the one who can make a difference.
- 11:21And that person is God. So David there verse 2, I pour
- 11:25out my complaint before him. I reveal my trouble to him and
- 11:29then he says, although my spirit is weak within me, you know my
- 11:32way. He says, God, I feel exhausted,
- 11:36but you know where I'm going. You know the path that you've
- 11:40set me on and the fact that you know who I am, where I'm at,
- 11:44where I'm going, that encourages me that I can keep on going.
- 11:50That like God could say, Brian, I know where you're at.
- 11:54I know the area in which you live.
- 11:57I know your church, I know how you're attempting to disciple
- 12:02some people. And I love and care about you.
- 12:06And so, yeah, I know that there are really bumpy spots along the
- 12:10way. I know that there are fears and
- 12:12their anxieties. But I see.
- 12:16And for me that empowers and and motivates me that I say, man, I
- 12:21I'm not forgotten. I'm not doing this for no
- 12:24reason. God knows my path.
- 12:26And because God knows the way I'm going, I can keep on going,
- 12:31'cause I know he's watching me. You can think about it like a
- 12:34little kid of if they know that their parent is behind them and
- 12:39they know that their parent can see him, well, they might be
- 12:42more bold to do some things or try a trick or swim out a little
- 12:46farther or, you know, wander a little further on the playground
- 12:50because they know mom or dad can see me and so I'm OK.
- 12:54And the fact that God knows our way and our path means that we
- 12:58can continue on because we know that our father sees us.
- 13:04second-half of verse 3, verse part of or sorry.
- 13:07And then verse 4 along this path I travel.
- 13:09They have hidden a trap for me. I talked last episode or two
- 13:14episodes ago. We have our enemy Satan, who is
- 13:16setting traps for us either in temptation that we would walk
- 13:20away from what God has said into wickedness, or he'll try and
- 13:24bring trials into our life that we just quit God because of how
- 13:29hard life gets. And so here there is a trap that
- 13:33is hidden for us and we know what those traps are.
- 13:37Verse #4 Look to the right and see no one stands up for me.
- 13:41David here all alone, like running from deserted area to
- 13:47deserted area with his group of, you know, I'll call it the group
- 13:51of merry men because Saul jealous of David, thinking that
- 13:57David wants to steal the throne from Saul, is hunting him down
- 14:02and is trying to kill him. And David says there's no one
- 14:05that's standing up for me to go. No, Saul, we're not going to do
- 14:09this. He doesn't want your he doesn't
- 14:11want to steal your throne or your Kingdom.
- 14:14He's your son-in-law. And so you need to stop this.
- 14:17And David says, No1 stands up for me.
- 14:19There is no refuge for me. No one cares about me.
- 14:23Hey man, that's how many of us feel, that we say God.
- 14:28No one gets it. And I feel totally alone in this
- 14:32moment. Where are you?
- 14:36Do you care about me? And I love the old hymn.
- 14:38No one ever cared for me like Jesus.
- 14:40There's no other friends so kind as He.
- 14:43No one else could take the sin and darkness from me.
- 14:46Oh, how much he cares for me. Verse #5I cry to you, Yahweh, I
- 14:51say, You are my shelter, my portion in the land of the
- 14:56living here. He says, God, if I'm going to
- 14:58have a safe place, it's not even going to be this cave that I'm
- 15:02in right now. God, you are the place where I
- 15:05find shelter, where I find safety for my life.
- 15:09Do you run again and again to the shelter of God's character
- 15:14and His love for you when you encounter hard times?
- 15:18Because that is the sturdy ground.
- 15:21He is never going to abandon you.
- 15:23He's never going to get rid of you.
- 15:25He's never going to make you not his child.
- 15:28And so you can run to him and you can find shelter in him.
- 15:32And then he says, my portion in the land of the living.
- 15:36David was like the 7th I think it was the 7th born son of
- 15:41Jesse. He would not have gotten much in
- 15:45the way of physical inheritance. You know the the family land
- 15:51would predominantly go to a lie of the first born.
- 15:55If I remember correctly, that's his oldest brother.
- 15:58And so Eliab would get, you know, the family land and the
- 16:02vast majority of the blessing. And then brothers 2345 and six,
- 16:06you know, they'd get their portions.
- 16:08And David would get something kind of piddly at the end.
- 16:12And he says, God, my inheritance, what I get out of
- 16:15life is you. He says, you are my portion.
- 16:18I don't have much. I don't have right now, a home,
- 16:22a land, any of that. But David says, God, I have you
- 16:27and that's enough. Can I ask you if God never gives
- 16:30you a different job, if God never gives you more money, if
- 16:35he never gets you that relationship that you're
- 16:38wanting, if he never gives you anything else other than
- 16:44himself, is that enough for you? Are you satisfied with having
- 16:49him now? In his great goodness to us, He
- 16:52continues to pour out blessing on blessing on blessing.
- 16:57And so he has given us himself, and that is enough.
- 17:00That is the thing that we ought to rejoice in.
- 17:05But there's no guarantee that God will give you everything
- 17:08that you desire, that you want. And so you need to decide if
- 17:12you're going to have David's heart here to say, God, you're
- 17:15my portion. What I get out of life is you,
- 17:18and that's OK. I I want safety, I want
- 17:21protection. I want you to stand up for me.
- 17:24I want you to care for me when no one else is but God.
- 17:28You are the best part of my existence and I am happy to have
- 17:33you. Verse number six, Listen to my
- 17:35cry for I am very weak. Rescue me from those who pursue
- 17:39me for they are too strong for me.
- 17:44I've felt this man over the last how long have I been lead
- 17:49pastor? Senior pastor now 23.
- 17:53So I'm coming up on in December. It'll be 3 years.
- 17:57I think technically I'm at like 2 1/4 coming up on 2 1/4 years
- 18:04of of being a lead pastor. There's been so many times where
- 18:07I've just been like, hey God, I have no idea what to do in this
- 18:10situation. You know, I can't fix, I can't
- 18:15fix this relationship. I don't know what I'm going to
- 18:19say to these people. God, you know the
- 18:23misunderstanding that happened here.
- 18:25And I don't know how to like, unravel that whole mess.
- 18:28And so, God, I'm weak. I don't have the knowledge to be
- 18:32able to fix all of this, but you do.
- 18:35And so God, I'm weak, but you are strong.
- 18:37So I want to rely on you and that's a that's a good prayer to
- 18:41pray his God. I I ain't got the tools
- 18:44necessary for this, but you do and so would you work then verse
- 18:497 as he ends free me from prison.
- 18:51This is metaphorical present. He's he's unable to go back to
- 18:55family, unable to have land, unable to do like regular work
- 19:02or whatever. He can't even do shepherding
- 19:04work because because of being pursued by his government.
- 19:10And so he says free me from prison so that I can praise your
- 19:13name. The righteous will gather around
- 19:16me because you deal generously with me.
- 19:20I love this thought. He says the righteous are going
- 19:22to gather around me because they see what you have done for me.
- 19:26And this is a constant picture in Scripture that the people
- 19:30that God has chosen, He has chosen them to be a blessing to
- 19:36all those around them. When he chose Abraham, it was so
- 19:39that all the peoples of the earth would be blessed through
- 19:42Abraham. And so it is for us that we are
- 19:45called to be a blessing to others.
- 19:47And even as we pray and as we seek God's help in our difficult
- 19:51circumstances. Are you hoping, are you planning
- 19:56on when God works on your behalf that you're going to, that
- 20:03you're going to have that spill out on other people?
- 20:05You're going to tell other people what God has done.
- 20:07You are going to bless others generously as God blesses you
- 20:12generously that you are going to speak kind words into other
- 20:16people's life even in the middle of hardships.
- 20:20Because God has spoken kindly to you, are you willing to say the
- 20:25goodness and generosity and presence of God isn't going to
- 20:30end with me? Instead, I'm going to pass all
- 20:32of those things on to other people.
- 20:35I'm going to take what God has given me, and I'm going to give
- 20:38it to others. Well, I love this little Psalm
- 20:42and I hope it was an encouragement to you today.
- 20:47Grateful for end of another week and looking forward to even this
- 20:51coming Sunday. We're preaching through John 14
- 20:55right now at Tabernacle during the Last Supper, the last meal
- 21:00of Jesus's life, and he's talking about how he's giving us
- 21:04the Holy Spirit. And so super excited for that
- 21:07for Sunday. But hope you have a wonderful
- 21:09day. See you next episode.
