Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, Everybody, Welcome to
- 0:24Speaker 1: another episode of the Season with Peter Scheger. Beyond excited
- 0:29Speaker 1: for this week's guest. We're having Dave Canalis, who is
- 0:32Speaker 1: the new head coach of the Carolina Panthers. I've gotten
- 0:34Speaker 1: to know Dave a little bit over the last couple
- 0:36Speaker 1: of years, but I'd be lying if I said I
- 0:39Speaker 1: was tight with him back when he was a quality
- 0:41Speaker 1: control coach in Sea Adelie knew. I met AZUSA Pacific
- 0:45Speaker 1: kind of got on my radar the last few years
- 0:48Speaker 1: when he took a bigger role with the Seahawks. That
- 0:50Speaker 1: was in Tampa Bay now is in Carolina. I think
- 0:52Speaker 1: this is a very different interview than we've done in
- 0:55Speaker 1: that Dave really took the long road in the NFL
- 1:00Speaker 1: and wore a lot of hats and then has had
- 1:02Speaker 1: sudden success in the last couple of years. Once given
- 1:05Speaker 1: these opportunities, we're gonna bring Dave on in a bit.
- 1:08Speaker 1: He's taken over the worst team in football, and his
- 1:11Speaker 1: job is to instill confidence into those guys and to
- 1:14Speaker 1: somehow build back up a quarterback who was everybody'sa's unanimous
- 1:18Speaker 1: first overall pick, and Bryce Young and then c J.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Stroud had one of the greatest rookie seasons ever. Well,
- 1:23Speaker 1: Bryce had one of the worst rookie seasons ever. And
- 1:26Speaker 1: now it's Canalis's job to come in and say, hey,
- 1:30Speaker 1: almost a Robin Williams to the Matt Damon and Goodwill
- 1:33Speaker 1: hunting like it's not your fault, you know, like bringing
- 1:36Speaker 1: him in. You hear the laughter of Aaron wan Kaufman,
- 1:40Speaker 1: my producer, Aaron A couple of things I wanted to
- 1:43Speaker 1: hit on before we get to Dave one. Can I
- 1:47Speaker 1: talk about JJ Reddick for a second.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, Are you thinking you know your next step
- 1:53Speaker 2: is going to be a coach in an LA team?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Now, I didn't. I didn't play basketball, so I don't
- 1:58Speaker 1: think it ever coached. I never played, I never coached
- 2:01Speaker 1: in my forties. I don't think being a head coach
- 2:03Speaker 1: of an NFL team is ever in my future. I
- 2:06Speaker 1: just talked to a lot of coaches, but I do
- 2:10Speaker 1: kind of like JJ's edge and JJ using the.
- 2:15Speaker 2: F bomb of times multiple drops.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yeah, let me go back in time a little bit
- 2:22Speaker 1: here with JJ Reddick. Obviously, played at Duke, that you
- 2:26Speaker 1: loved him or you hated him. Most people hated him
- 2:28Speaker 1: because he was the kid from Duke. And he followed
- 2:31Speaker 1: in a long line of whether it be Christian Latner
- 2:36Speaker 1: or Wojahowski or Cherokee Parks or Eric Meek. And then
- 2:42Speaker 1: here's JJ Reddick, the sharpshooter from Virginia, plays for Duke,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and he has this great career at Duke and gets
- 2:47Speaker 1: drafted in the first round of the NBA, has a
- 2:50Speaker 1: pretty good year or two with the Orlando Magic, then
- 2:52Speaker 1: bounces around a bit and then like really establishes himself
- 2:55Speaker 1: as like a great NBA veteran player to have on
- 2:58Speaker 1: your team, but never the superstar. Right, fifteen years in
- 3:01Speaker 1: the league. About four years ago, I'm at the ferry
- 3:08Speaker 1: in Dumbo. If you're not from Brooklyn, here's the deal.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Brooklyn has all these different parts and Dumbo is down
- 3:17Speaker 1: under the Manhattan Bridge. Is what it's called overpass, I
- 3:20Speaker 1: guess that's what it is, Dumbo, right, And there's a
- 3:22Speaker 1: ferry pick up, and the ferry can take you to
- 3:26Speaker 1: anywhere from Wall Street to East thirty fourth Street, and
- 3:30Speaker 1: it could take you the other way to bait Ridge
- 3:32Speaker 1: or you can go to Williamsburg, North South whatever, and
- 3:35Speaker 1: it's basically a boat ride. It's two dollars and it's beautiful.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You're on the open sea in New York and you're
- 3:43Speaker 1: going place to place, and it's a lot of people
- 3:45Speaker 1: do that to go to different parts of New York City.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I have a four year old son at a time.
- 3:52Speaker 1: It's early, it's like a Saturday morning, and if you're
- 3:55Speaker 1: a father at home, you know, like the energy from
- 4:00Speaker 1: these kids is just, you know, unlimited. I go to
- 4:02Speaker 1: the ferry to just do something with my son Mail
- 4:06Speaker 1: and we're going to ride a boat today. And there's
- 4:08Speaker 1: one other dad there with his son who's the same age,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and it's JJ Reddick. And I go up to him
- 4:15Speaker 1: because here I am big time sports personality. Maybe he
- 4:18Speaker 1: knows who I am. He doesn't know who the hell
- 4:19Speaker 1: I am. That's fine. I introduced myself. He introduced himself.
- 4:23Speaker 1: We get on the ferry, we talk a little bit.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Our kids are you know, mixing it or whatever? And
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'm like, so, Brooklyn, like you play for the Sixers.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So he's like, I love Brooklyn. I love raising my
- 4:32Speaker 1: family here. I love the culture. I love the fact
- 4:35Speaker 1: that it's different people intersecting at any you know corner.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I love the fact that I can raise my kids
- 4:40Speaker 1: in an area like this, and you know, I'm like, Okay,
- 4:43Speaker 1: that's that's an interesting dude. Like that's a guy who
- 4:46Speaker 1: is choosing to live and raise kids in like New
- 4:48Speaker 1: York City, and he's talking about he just loves, you know,
- 4:50Speaker 1: the being anonymous here and being able to walk around.
- 4:53Speaker 1: But also they really dig living in Brooklyn. And I'm like,
- 4:57Speaker 1: that's cool. So do I put that in the backshelf,
- 5:00Speaker 1: don't think about it. Whatever. A few years later, my
- 5:03Speaker 1: son is playing in a like a rec basketball league
- 5:06Speaker 1: as a si year old, and I feel like my
- 5:07Speaker 1: son's at a pretty good level. And they're still doing,
- 5:11Speaker 1: you know, dribble the ball around cones and here's a
- 5:15Speaker 1: spoon and an egg and let's try to like do
- 5:17Speaker 1: a race. It wasn't let's break down the two three
- 5:20Speaker 1: zone or the one three one press, which is what
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm looking for already in my life. And someone tells
- 5:25Speaker 1: me that, hey, JJ Reddick just started this thing called
- 5:28Speaker 1: the Brooklyn Basketball Academy, where his kids are obviously playing,
- 5:33Speaker 1: but it's taking kids from all over Tribeca Brooklyn and
- 5:39Speaker 1: all over New York City, and it's kids from all
- 5:41Speaker 1: backgrounds and he's put them in and he's giving them
- 5:43Speaker 1: real coaching at a young age. And one of the
- 5:46Speaker 1: interesting parts about it was a lot of these coaches
- 5:49Speaker 1: were Eastern European and I'm like, this is really interesting.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'm like, what is that, and like, well, the way
- 5:54Speaker 1: they coach basketball in Eastern Europe and you're thinking about
- 5:59Speaker 1: Luca and Djoki, it's you don't just do a set
- 6:02Speaker 1: shot with two feet and look at the basket. You're
- 6:05Speaker 1: doing off balance or you're coming off screens. And they're
- 6:08Speaker 1: teaching these kids this at five, six, seven years old
- 6:12Speaker 1: and they do the ginobilie, the step and all this stuff.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And I'm like, Okay, this is innovative. This is innovative
- 6:18Speaker 1: because I've been to a lot of camps and all
- 6:20Speaker 1: this stuff, and it's the same stuff. We're gonna play
- 6:22Speaker 1: red Rover, we're gonna get in layup lines, we're gonna
- 6:25Speaker 1: teach you how to do a proper layup. And JJ's
- 6:29Speaker 1: hired all these Eastern European coaches who are like very good,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and it's him at the top, and it's all these
- 6:35Speaker 1: other guys and you come to practice and it's not
- 6:38Speaker 1: we're gonna play tag on a basketball court, or instead
- 6:41Speaker 1: it's we're gonna pass the ball and screen away and
- 6:44Speaker 1: then you're gonna come off a screen, or you're gonna
- 6:45Speaker 1: shoot the ball off one dribble go. It was real coaching.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Now you're rolling your eyes at home and saying, are
- 6:52Speaker 1: you seriously talking about your seven year old son. No,
- 6:55Speaker 1: I'm talking about taking a landscape youth basketball in his
- 7:01Speaker 1: neighborhood and saying this is missing, and why don't we
- 7:05Speaker 1: do it this and do it in a more innovative way.
- 7:09Speaker 1: My son Melon has been in this Brooklyn basketball academy
- 7:11Speaker 1: for two years. He's not going to play in the NBA,
- 7:14Speaker 1: but I will tell you he has just improved so
- 7:18Speaker 1: greatly over just two years. And it hasn't been from
- 7:20Speaker 1: JJ Reddick's coaching. He's not there. It's his coach is
- 7:23Speaker 1: that he's employed. JJ did coach one of the teams
- 7:28Speaker 1: one time against my son. My son had a big
- 7:30Speaker 1: shot and like kind of like rubbed it in his
- 7:32Speaker 1: face and I was like, Okay, see it's chill with that, Mel,
- 7:34Speaker 1: Like we don't need to do that. And JJ was
- 7:36Speaker 1: cool about it, but the doubters, the haters, the critics,
- 7:41Speaker 1: like just knowing him a little bit, I wasn't surprised
- 7:44Speaker 1: that he came out guns blazing, and I don't think
- 7:46Speaker 1: he's going to be this like podcaster coach that people think.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think this is someone who wants to serve. This
- 7:53Speaker 1: is somebody who wants to do this. This is somebody
- 7:56Speaker 1: who said in his press conference yesterday that in the
- 7:58Speaker 1: last few years of the NBA career his greatest thrills
- 8:03Speaker 1: was just working with those young guys and getting the
- 8:06Speaker 1: best out of them and passing on his wisdom. I'm
- 8:09Speaker 1: excited for JJ Reddick as an NBA head coach, Lebron
- 8:12Speaker 1: or not. This is the first time I've been mentioning
- 8:13Speaker 1: Lebron's name, And is he a puppet? I don't think
- 8:16Speaker 1: a guy who's played fifteen years in the NBA who
- 8:19Speaker 1: immediately jumped into the podcast game and had a number
- 8:21Speaker 1: one podcast and then also, oh, by the way, climb
- 8:24Speaker 1: the ladder and became the number one analyst at ESPN
- 8:27Speaker 1: in like two years, I don't think that guy's going
- 8:30Speaker 1: somewhere to be like Lebron's running mate and drinking wine.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I have great great expectations and great hope, and I've
- 8:38Speaker 1: got some confidence just seeing how he goes about his
- 8:40Speaker 1: business that this guy can take on anything. And again,
- 8:43Speaker 1: not a friend, not someone I would consider like a pal,
- 8:47Speaker 1: but somebody from Afar that I've been able to watch
- 8:49Speaker 1: and a little closer than others, that I think is
- 8:51Speaker 1: going to be great success in whatever he does. And
- 8:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna bet on Reddick in this one. And the
- 8:56Speaker 1: fact that he hasn't coached in the NBA for twenty years,
- 9:00Speaker 1: He's played in the NBA for fifteen years, and he
- 9:02Speaker 1: has been around all the best players of this generation
- 9:05Speaker 1: and has played with them and been side by side
- 9:07Speaker 1: with them and has suffered losses, that suffered and enjoyed wins.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Like I don't know, maybe I'm overlooking something, but like
- 9:14Speaker 1: to hire another NBA retread, retread coach. Okay, they're taking
- 9:19Speaker 1: a swing of the bat. They're hiring a guy who,
- 9:21Speaker 1: from firsthand experience, I think, analyzes markets and says, here's
- 9:25Speaker 1: what's not being done and can pinpoint those inefficiencies and
- 9:28Speaker 1: get the most of them. Aaron, we interview coaches all
- 9:32Speaker 1: the time on this show. That's our primary deal. Like
- 9:37Speaker 1: for you to see that JJ Redick, you know, hit
- 9:40Speaker 1: our world a podcaster and broadcaster who has no coaching
- 9:44Speaker 1: experience in the NBA. Did that? Did that? How did
- 9:47Speaker 1: you respond? Because I'm curious because you live in both worlds,
- 9:50Speaker 1: in the coaching world and that we interview all these
- 9:52Speaker 1: coaches and then podcasting, which is the world he's leaving behind.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I mean, if you say JJ Reddick is a podcaster,
- 9:58Speaker 2: you're you're throwing out his illustrious career as a player,
- 10:03Speaker 2: like a player who had so much public scrutiny directed
- 10:08Speaker 2: towards him, like you said, starting at Duke, like he
- 10:11Speaker 2: I don't think he's gonna he's He's going to get
- 10:14Speaker 2: a ton of attention. He's coaching the Lakers, He's got
- 10:16Speaker 2: Lebron potentially on the team. People will hate him and
- 10:19Speaker 2: they'll blame him, and I think that's okay. Like he's
- 10:22Speaker 2: dealt with all that before. So if you just call
- 10:25Speaker 2: it like he's he did one podcast a couple he's
- 10:27Speaker 2: done a bunch of podcasts, I guess basketball wise, but
- 10:30Speaker 2: like that is the smallest part of his experience with
- 10:33Speaker 2: the game. I think it's really interesting. I love when
- 10:37Speaker 2: teams hire sort of like off the wall choices because
- 10:42Speaker 2: like you said, there's so you know, every year there's
- 10:46Speaker 2: a coach who has made the rounds through everywhere in
- 10:49Speaker 2: the Eastern Conference and then the Western Conference is like, oh,
- 10:51Speaker 2: it's we're so excited we have you know, we're hiring Bud.
- 10:55Speaker 2: And it's like, yeah, that's not going to do anything
- 10:57Speaker 2: for you. I'm sorry. Like with the Lakers roster, you
- 11:00Speaker 2: gotta do something outside of the box. And I think
- 11:03Speaker 2: I don't know. I think JJ's excited. I like, I
- 11:05Speaker 2: don't think they're gonna win the finals next year, but
- 11:08Speaker 2: I don't know if they need to.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I think that's yeah, and he wanted to do it,
- 11:13Speaker 1: Like yeah, who wanted to do it? And that's it,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and like they were willing to fulfill that dream. I
- 11:19Speaker 1: now what happens to the Brooklyn Basketball Academy. There's a
- 11:22Speaker 1: lot of text going on. People are very nervous. Does
- 11:26Speaker 1: the quality dip without JJ, or do we rise above
- 11:29Speaker 1: and say JJ, you can leave the nest? Or is
- 11:31Speaker 1: he still involved? I think someone should have been planted
- 11:34Speaker 1: from like the Brooklyn Eagle, the local Brooklyn newspaper that
- 11:38Speaker 1: I get at my doorsteps to ask a question about
- 11:40Speaker 1: the Brooklyn Basketball Academy yesterday, but good luck to him.
- 11:45Speaker 1: We'll see how it goes. I'm excited. Like you said,
- 11:47Speaker 1: it's something different. In the NFL, they hire college coaches
- 11:50Speaker 1: and people freak out, Like I cannot imagine if someone said, hey,
- 11:54Speaker 1: we're hiring you know, we're hiring a ex player does
- 11:57Speaker 1: a podcast to be an NFL head coach. But it's
- 12:00Speaker 1: also a different world NBA. I think we've seen guys
- 12:03Speaker 1: like Steve Nash get into coaching. I remember Magic Johnson
- 12:06Speaker 1: was hired like fresh off playing, Like it seems like
- 12:09Speaker 1: it's a lot more common. All right, real quick, before
- 12:11Speaker 1: we get to Canalis, who I can't wait to speak with.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Two things happened over the weekend NFL related that I
- 12:18Speaker 1: did want to hit on with you and say, have
- 12:20Speaker 1: we crossed the rupicon? Like are we now in an
- 12:23Speaker 1: era where this stuff doesn't even blow our hair back?
- 12:26Speaker 1: Joe Burrow and Justin Jefferson fully featured in Vogue's Harris
- 12:32Speaker 1: Fashion Show. Not ten years ago, there would have been
- 12:36Speaker 1: a lot of commentary and jokes like now it seems
- 12:39Speaker 1: like only Neanderthals have problems with this kind of stuff.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Your thoughts Burrow, Jefferson Vogue.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Go amazing, Like, especially with those two, I think, you know,
- 12:52Speaker 2: Burrow has kind of an iconic look. I mean I
- 12:55Speaker 2: just think back to like the photo of him in
- 12:56Speaker 2: college in the locker room, like with the cigar.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah yeah.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And Jefferson is like the I don't know, one of
- 13:05Speaker 2: the most decorated players in the league, just like such
- 13:08Speaker 2: a quintessential number one receiver. He's a newsworthy guy all
- 13:13Speaker 2: the time, and he's like he's doing dances, he's dressing
- 13:17Speaker 2: well for games of course, get him there. I love
- 13:20Speaker 2: it like this is this is a natural evolution of
- 13:23Speaker 2: what these players do as members of the NFL, who also,
- 13:29Speaker 2: like clearly have other interests.
- 13:30Speaker 1: So I love it good me too. And then lastly,
- 13:34Speaker 1: the the moment that took the Internet by storm Sunday night,
- 13:38Speaker 1: Travis Kelcey in full get up on stage at the
- 13:42Speaker 1: Taylor Swift concert after three nights of being there with
- 13:44Speaker 1: her in London, and then he is now a part
- 13:46Speaker 1: of the show. We fully crossed it where like that
- 13:49Speaker 1: didn't even. It wasn't even I was like, oh, yeah,
- 13:52Speaker 1: how come that hasn't happened sooner? Like he's fully a
- 13:55Speaker 1: part of it now as one of the dancers your thoughts.
- 13:58Speaker 2: You know, I'm not really a fan of nepotism, and
- 14:03Speaker 2: so to see a dancer get up on one of
- 14:05Speaker 2: the most celebrated he's got no dance experience, get him
- 14:09Speaker 2: off the stage.
- 14:09Speaker 1: No, exactly, he should have a press conference. He liked it,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and I don't care.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Yeah, No, it was cool, right, Yeah, it was very
- 14:19Speaker 2: fun to see him doing that. And I love you know,
- 14:24Speaker 2: I love him embracing his role with her in that
- 14:28Speaker 2: relationship and being like, yeah, my girlfriend is on this
- 14:31Speaker 2: amazing world tour here, I am just like supporting her,
- 14:34Speaker 2: like coming on stage real quick and then I'm heading out,
- 14:36Speaker 2: and like, I think that was great.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I think the cool thing for me is that, like
- 14:41Speaker 1: he's not using it for clout, so it's like and
- 14:44Speaker 1: he's not, but he's also not shying away, like they're
- 14:47Speaker 1: not living in Like they went to the Chiltern Firehouse,
- 14:49Speaker 1: a children tabln children firehouse, whatever it was. I've been
- 14:52Speaker 1: there in London, humble brag. It's like a cool restaurant,
- 14:55Speaker 1: think a Soho house, ieal, It's like a cool restaurant
- 14:58Speaker 1: that goes into a club and like there was paparazzi
- 15:01Speaker 1: there and they posed for paparazzi photos and said hello,
- 15:03Speaker 1: And like, then what about there, Like they're not he's
- 15:06Speaker 1: not laying in the weeds here, like he's out there,
- 15:08Speaker 1: he's singing, he's doing all that, Like it's kind of
- 15:10Speaker 1: refreshing for one of these celebrity couples. And he's just like, yeah,
- 15:12Speaker 1: I'm Travis kelsey on, one of the biggest NFL superstars,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and she's Taylor Swiped, the biggest star in the world.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Like we're not going to hide. Yeah.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And I also like, okay, I might have had something
- 15:23Speaker 2: some of an issue if like he came up on
- 15:25Speaker 2: stage and sang a couple songs or something like. That's
- 15:30Speaker 2: not That's not what people. He was a service role there, right,
- 15:32Speaker 2: he was there supporting her, you know. So I think
- 15:35Speaker 2: it's great.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Let's close here with the monologue and get to our guest.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Uh.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I will say this next week is the Michael Ruben
- 15:45Speaker 1: White Party, and I still have not gotten my invitation.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I'm wearing a white T shirt for the occasion today
- 15:50Speaker 1: as we record this podcast with Canalis. So if that
- 15:54Speaker 1: invitation does come, I will decline it and say no
- 15:57Speaker 1: thank you, because I don't want to be a last
- 15:59Speaker 1: second add on. So Aaron, just let it be known.
- 16:02Speaker 1: If I do get the Air Force ones and the
- 16:05Speaker 1: bottle of Don Julia, whatever it is that comes with
- 16:07Speaker 1: the invitation, there will be a very polite RSVP, no
- 16:11Speaker 1: thank you, and we will go about our business and
- 16:13Speaker 1: I'll have a barbecue with my family and That'll be that.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I think that's a that's a great You can get
- 16:18Speaker 2: shoes for your barbecue too. No fun, just this fun.
- 16:21Speaker 1: No doubt, with no further ado, Let's bring in our guests.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Aaron Stave Canal as head coach of the Carolina Painters.
- 16:35Speaker 1: So excited for today's guest, the guy I've gott to
- 16:37Speaker 1: know the last couple of years. And I kicked myself
- 16:39Speaker 1: because I feel like we would have been fast friends
- 16:41Speaker 1: ten years ago, but we had never been introduced. And
- 16:43Speaker 1: now we know each other and he is going to
- 16:46Speaker 1: be a household name this season for sure, as the
- 16:48Speaker 1: head coach of the Carolina Panthers, joining us from beautiful
- 16:52Speaker 1: Washington State coach Dave Canal is, Dave, what's going on? Man?
- 16:57Speaker 3: What's up? Peter? Thanks man, thanks for having me here.
- 17:00Speaker 3: You know, it's a I'm really excited. I'm here in
- 17:03Speaker 3: my happy place, just trying to gather my all my excitement,
- 17:06Speaker 3: the dreams and the vision that I have and just
- 17:08Speaker 3: trying to make sure that you know it fits this
- 17:11Speaker 3: group and what we're doing. But this has been unbelievable
- 17:14Speaker 3: roller coaster of a spring and I'm excited to just
- 17:18Speaker 3: catch up with you here.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Yeah, the ride is so cool. We always talk about
- 17:22Speaker 1: it's not the destination, it's the journey. But you're right.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Everyone thinks, oh, well, he came out of nowhere. He
- 17:27Speaker 1: was the offensive coordinator of the Bucks and now he's
- 17:29Speaker 1: after one year doing that, he's a coach. Dude, you
- 17:32Speaker 1: have had a journey. We can we start way at
- 17:37Speaker 1: the beginning and getting to know Dave Canalis like way
- 17:40Speaker 1: in the beginning, a ZUSA Pacific. Where are we starting?
- 17:43Speaker 1: Where do you want to start? Where do you find
- 17:46Speaker 1: yourself when you think of your football journey, like day
- 17:49Speaker 1: one and the big break of okay, I can actually
- 17:52Speaker 1: do this for a living.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Yeah. Shoot, if I started APU, it's probably two years
- 18:00Speaker 3: of injuries back to back and like how can I help?
- 18:03Speaker 3: How can I serve? And we had a bunch of
- 18:06Speaker 3: Frishman and we had some transfers and I said, okay, well,
- 18:09Speaker 3: if I'm going to be out, I can at least contribute.
- 18:11Speaker 3: And that's kind of where my coaching started. And the
- 18:14Speaker 3: coaching staff trusted me a lot with the information. So
- 18:17Speaker 3: I'm running around just kind of helping out and I
- 18:20Speaker 3: really fell in love with it then, you know. And
- 18:24Speaker 3: then but fast forward quickly to you know, high school football.
- 18:30Speaker 3: I really was I really wanted to be a sports trainer.
- 18:34Speaker 3: I wanted to do the whole sports performance facility, that
- 18:41Speaker 3: whole thing, bring bring skilled players in, you know, football
- 18:44Speaker 3: players in and get them ready for their seasons. And
- 18:47Speaker 3: so that's kind of how it started. And five kids,
- 18:50Speaker 3: five kids, a bench press and a wooden squad wreck.
- 18:54Speaker 3: We went to Pasadena, California to a twenty four hour
- 18:57Speaker 3: fitness It's one hundred and fifty bucks in a U haul.
- 19:02Speaker 3: We had a friend that were giving away all their plates, bars,
- 19:06Speaker 3: dumb all racks for a tax rite off, you know,
- 19:08Speaker 3: so I said, okay, we'll take it. So we got
- 19:10Speaker 3: a U haul, loaded it up and and uh just
- 19:14Speaker 3: put it all in a in a back warehouse at
- 19:15Speaker 3: my dad's church. And it started off with about five kids.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Five became fifteen, became thirty and you're.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Running these classes. You're you're the head guy.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and myself, my cousin, my cousin in law Kevin Nickerson,
- 19:30Speaker 3: who's the chaplain actually for the Rams. Okay, then and
- 19:34Speaker 3: then my brother Josh, who was the senior pastor at
- 19:37Speaker 3: my dad's church, he took over. So it's the three
- 19:39Speaker 3: of us with the dream. And we had like a two, five,
- 19:43Speaker 3: ten year plan and we started training kids. And then
- 19:47Speaker 3: one of the one of the kids we were training,
- 19:50Speaker 3: their parents were like, Hey, the JV head coaching jobs
- 19:52Speaker 3: open at the high school and they should check it out,
- 19:55Speaker 3: you know, And so the coach and I had a conversation.
- 19:59Speaker 3: He he lured me out there, and like I just
- 20:02Speaker 3: that was it, you know, I knew as soon as
- 20:03Speaker 3: I got out there any practices, loving on the guys.
- 20:09Speaker 3: It kind of just brought it all together. So and
- 20:11Speaker 3: then from there, my wife just said, Hey, they're really
- 20:14Speaker 3: good at this. They really the players respond to you,
- 20:17Speaker 3: the coaches love working with you. I can tell how
- 20:19Speaker 3: much you love this. She was like, just go for it.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Let's just see what happens. Let's give it five years
- 20:25Speaker 3: and let's see if we land a job. Somewhere, and
- 20:27Speaker 3: so I started to try to work my connections with
- 20:29Speaker 3: college and that's kind of how I ended up at
- 20:33Speaker 3: El Camino College and then Steve Sarkesian's connection there ended
- 20:38Speaker 3: up getting me to USC with PANA.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I think that's so Pete Carroll hires you in O nine,
- 20:45Speaker 1: but you're not hired as a quarterbacks coach or a
- 20:48Speaker 1: wide receivers coach. You go back to your roots and
- 20:50Speaker 1: the training staff, right, is that where you came in
- 20:52Speaker 1: with the USC.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I was a weight room and then like slash
- 20:59Speaker 3: video assistant, so you know, the weight room thing that
- 21:03Speaker 3: my background there was kind of got me, helped me
- 21:05Speaker 3: get in the door. And I'm just setting up cones,
- 21:07Speaker 3: you know, wasn't running, you know, I wasn't running in
- 21:10Speaker 3: the programs. I was putting bags out there, setting up cones,
- 21:13Speaker 3: you know, summer workouts. And then and then the videos
- 21:18Speaker 3: systant thing was just like you know, the hours the
- 21:20Speaker 3: dark room, the hours and hours of film and here
- 21:23Speaker 3: as your reward, you get to sit in the quarterback meetings.
- 21:26Speaker 3: So it was really cool and it just was one
- 21:29Speaker 3: year before Pete you know, took off in the middle
- 21:32Speaker 3: of the night, you know, to go to Seattle.
- 21:35Speaker 1: So so is it like that one year? Is that Sanchez?
- 21:39Speaker 1: Who's the quarterback? When you're when you're there is a booty?
- 21:41Speaker 1: Who are you working with?
- 21:43Speaker 3: That was Barkley? That was Matt Barkley as a freshman. Yeah, amazing. Yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 3: still still the league.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Still in the league, by the way, Matt Barkley.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. I get to run into him in
- 21:57Speaker 3: a different jersey every year. So just like, what's up? Marks?
- 22:02Speaker 1: So good? All right, So Pete goes to the Seahawks,
- 22:05Speaker 1: he takes you with him or you stuck at USC.
- 22:08Speaker 3: So I'm there, I'm there. I'm stuck at SC for
- 22:11Speaker 3: a couple of weeks. I don't really know what's going
- 22:13Speaker 3: to happen. And then it was a couple of weeks
- 22:17Speaker 3: later that I got the phone call and like the
- 22:21Speaker 3: kind of the the holy crap microcosm moment was I was.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I was sitting in the the war room, if you will,
- 22:30Speaker 3: like the recruiting room with Lane Kiffin at Ojeron.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yep.
- 22:37Speaker 3: We're watching junior college film from a year and a
- 22:42Speaker 3: half ago. Okay, so that's and it's Al Camedo College
- 22:46Speaker 3: against College of the Canyons. We're watching a defensive linement
- 22:50Speaker 3: from College at the Canyons playoff game, and he had
- 22:53Speaker 3: like a two year highlight. So I'm sitting there with them,
- 22:57Speaker 3: We're watching an Al Camedo play College of the Canyons.
- 22:59Speaker 3: I can see me on the sideline. You can see.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Yourself on the video at El Camino, Yes, with.
- 23:05Speaker 3: The visor, you know, Khaki shorts in a polo and like, which,
- 23:10Speaker 3: by the way, they should bring back into coaching, like
- 23:14Speaker 3: the look, it's so comfortable and then anyway, so then
- 23:19Speaker 3: so I'm sitting there losing that and like literally two
- 23:22Speaker 3: days before I'd been offered to go to the Seattle
- 23:25Speaker 3: Seahawks's quality control. So really it's just like this amazing.
- 23:29Speaker 1: You're watching yourself coaching community or not community, but junior
- 23:32Speaker 1: college at a level that no one would ever watch
- 23:35Speaker 1: on television. And then the official Seattle Seahawks phone line
- 23:40Speaker 1: calls and you're like, this has been two years or
- 23:43Speaker 1: what an amazing twenty four months?
- 23:45Speaker 3: Yes, you said that a lot better than I did,
- 23:47Speaker 3: but just kind of all it's just a microcosm. And
- 23:50Speaker 3: I'm sitting there just like wow, like just really just
- 23:52Speaker 3: humbled and floored with like this is all just circumstantially,
- 23:57Speaker 3: you know. For me, of course, I'm a I'm a
- 24:00Speaker 3: man of faith, and I just was like, wow, look
- 24:02Speaker 3: what God did in this short order. And I had
- 24:05Speaker 3: like literally no thing to do with it, Like there
- 24:07Speaker 3: wasn't I was like the best you know, junior college
- 24:11Speaker 3: quarterbacks coach, or like I was killing it, you know,
- 24:14Speaker 3: setting up cones and bags and s see. You know,
- 24:16Speaker 3: it's just it was just being in the right place
- 24:18Speaker 3: the right time, and then just being responsible with the
- 24:22Speaker 3: moment and the opportunities to work hard, to treat people
- 24:26Speaker 3: well and to connect and is like just you know,
- 24:29Speaker 3: it's just crazy.
- 24:30Speaker 1: So well, you're cutting your own attribute short a little
- 24:34Speaker 1: bit there. You're also everyone who's ever worked with you says,
- 24:36Speaker 1: just an amazing guy to have in the room, juice, energy,
- 24:40Speaker 1: and obviously Pete identified that in you because he could
- 24:43Speaker 1: have taken thirty people from his past and he chose
- 24:46Speaker 1: you as one of many. Now you get to Seattle
- 24:48Speaker 1: and people forget this. Those first I think that first
- 24:52Speaker 1: training camp in Seattle, you guys had like two hundred
- 24:55Speaker 1: people walk through the door. It was like a tryout.
- 24:58Speaker 1: I remember covering it from my you know, for Fox
- 25:00Speaker 1: sports dot Com. And it being like there's just bodies
- 25:03Speaker 1: after bodies, and like Pete Carroll is running this like
- 25:06Speaker 1: it's almost like a high school team, like who wants
- 25:08Speaker 1: to make this? They've got their veterans, but it was
- 25:10Speaker 1: an open door And I kind of love that approach
- 25:13Speaker 1: to rebuilding and starting a new era of an NFL team.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I love the I love the approach that Pete
- 25:20Speaker 3: brought of. Just like you know, you're you're either competing
- 25:24Speaker 3: or you're not, you know, And he showed up to
- 25:26Speaker 3: a roster that he was not fired up about and
- 25:29Speaker 3: it's just like, okay, well we know we have these guys.
- 25:33Speaker 3: And right after that it it, you know, the depth
- 25:35Speaker 3: chart falls off pretty quickly. We might as well just
- 25:39Speaker 3: see more people. We might as well bring more guys in,
- 25:42Speaker 3: you know. And and that I think it was like
- 25:44Speaker 3: two hundred and fifty transactions, like.
- 25:47Speaker 1: That's what it was. I think it was eighty eight
- 25:48Speaker 1: bodies or something came through like like new bodies at
- 25:52Speaker 1: top of the ninety.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Like it was nuts and it's cool. And I think
- 25:55Speaker 3: he was just challenging, challenging the roster to see like okay,
- 25:58Speaker 3: well we know these other guys. What about some of
- 26:01Speaker 3: you know, let's just keep getting our eyes on him.
- 26:03Speaker 3: So I remember that was crazy.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Yeah, And the gig early on in Seattle was on
- 26:07Speaker 1: the strength side, or is this on the coaching side.
- 26:09Speaker 1: You've now become one of the quarterbacks coaches and you're
- 26:11Speaker 1: already in that role.
- 26:13Speaker 3: It was quality control and I really still was not.
- 26:15Speaker 3: It was more of a production type of yeah, wearing
- 26:18Speaker 3: a lot of hats. Yeah, just playbook, video, calendar, schedules,
- 26:24Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff. You know, I really was.
- 26:27Speaker 3: I really was so overwhelmed with all those things. I
- 26:31Speaker 3: didn't really have a lot of time to be coaching
- 26:33Speaker 3: for about the first year. Yeah, you know. Yeah.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Now as you embark on this first year as a
- 26:40Speaker 1: head coach with the Carolina Panthers team that finished with
- 26:42Speaker 1: the worst record in the NFL, do you try to
- 26:44Speaker 1: tap into those memories from fifteen years ago just getting
- 26:47Speaker 1: to Seattle and maybe how Pete established culture and said
- 26:50Speaker 1: here that the here are the ground rules, here's what
- 26:53Speaker 1: we're going to do because this is a new era
- 26:54Speaker 1: and we're going to build it this way. Yeah.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Absolutely, I think the heart, the heart and the mindset
- 27:02Speaker 3: that I come in that I take from Pete and
- 27:04Speaker 3: from those early years is Number one is I didn't
- 27:10Speaker 3: get here because the roster was established. I didn't get
- 27:14Speaker 3: here because of excellence and all that typically are getting
- 27:18Speaker 3: your first job, because there were things that need attention
- 27:20Speaker 3: and need to be addressed. And so I think that
- 27:23Speaker 3: the openness to see who those players are going to be,
- 27:27Speaker 3: to see, you know, to really just be willing to
- 27:31Speaker 3: to try things, to find our niche as, find our
- 27:35Speaker 3: personality as a team, but also to find the players,
- 27:38Speaker 3: you know, like we need to be active, we need
- 27:41Speaker 3: to have our eyes and ears to the ground for
- 27:43Speaker 3: players that can help us. And and so you know,
- 27:47Speaker 3: I have an eagerness to kind of see I'm I'm
- 27:50Speaker 3: That's one of my excitements about coming back is like
- 27:52Speaker 3: I wonder who it's going to be, Like, who are
- 27:54Speaker 3: those guys? Yeah, that we that we have in our building.
- 27:58Speaker 3: If we can just put a good football product out
- 28:00Speaker 3: there on a platform for them to perform, the stars
- 28:03Speaker 3: will show up. But then who are those other guys?
- 28:06Speaker 3: Because I just live in the possibilities type of world.
- 28:11Speaker 3: My world is about possibilities. And I know there were
- 28:14Speaker 3: late round draft pick, free agent, rookie free agents, veteran
- 28:18Speaker 3: free agents, who were like, I'm now ready to do
- 28:21Speaker 3: this thing that made an impact further than anything anyone
- 28:25Speaker 3: could ever have imagined for their careers in Seattle. I
- 28:27Speaker 3: watched it happened in Tampa last year too, and so
- 28:30Speaker 3: I get excited about the untold stories going into this year.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Give me a Seattle guy that you know you saw
- 28:37Speaker 1: walk through the door, maybe not as heralded, and took
- 28:40Speaker 1: to coaching and made a career for him, stuff that
- 28:42Speaker 1: maybe walking in the door not everyone anticipated.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Yeah right off the bat, you know Doug Baldwin, Yeah,
- 28:51Speaker 3: Jermaine Curse, who really had he had a fantastic junior
- 28:56Speaker 3: year and then really had some struggles to senior year,
- 28:59Speaker 3: had some drops and people were down on him, and
- 29:04Speaker 3: and I just see, like the guy, the the competitor,
- 29:07Speaker 3: he was, the determination he had, and an environment and
- 29:12Speaker 3: I credit Pete for this, but an environment that that
- 29:15Speaker 3: said it didn't say, hey, just take a number and
- 29:18Speaker 3: get in line. It said I'm not in your way.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Who wants to play, who wants who wants to make
- 29:24Speaker 3: for this exactly? And so that's just kind of sometimes
- 29:27Speaker 3: it's just that permission that a player needs. I think
- 29:30Speaker 3: of David Moore, who we actually have yeah, in in
- 29:35Speaker 3: in Charlotte. He was a he was a seventh round pick,
- 29:40Speaker 3: you know, and we drafted a guy in the fourth round.
- 29:42Speaker 3: But because of our model of like, guys, just show
- 29:44Speaker 3: us who you are, we'll figure out who goes where
- 29:47Speaker 3: and who plays, there's a bunch of them. Man, Gary
- 29:52Speaker 3: Gilliam was a tight end we turned into a tackle
- 29:54Speaker 3: because it was.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Very good, you know, George, Right, that was one.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Where George George another you know Western basketball back round,
- 30:07Speaker 3: you know, ends up you still playing tackle, you know,
- 30:10Speaker 3: in the league and started last year some But yeah,
- 30:15Speaker 3: I can I can rattle up another probably thirty or
- 30:18Speaker 3: forty guys.
- 30:19Speaker 1: So yeah, so you spend time as Yeah, then Russell
- 30:22Speaker 1: Wilson gets dropped in your laps as a third round pick.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Take us through that summer because I remember the late
- 30:27Speaker 1: Trevares Jackson was a great player and Matt Flynn was
- 30:31Speaker 1: the big free agent signing. And it's not not common
- 30:34Speaker 1: that a coach and a GM would say, hey, man,
- 30:37Speaker 1: the best man win at quarterback, especially after the GM penned,
- 30:40Speaker 1: you know, Matt Flynn to a one of the biggest
- 30:42Speaker 1: deals a free agent quarterback got that offseason.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Yeah, record. Let's go record straight. First, John Schneider was
- 30:48Speaker 3: the one most fired about Russell. The rest of us
- 30:50Speaker 3: were like the rest of us. He grew on us
- 30:55Speaker 3: through throughout the process, the spring process, leading up to
- 30:58Speaker 3: the draft. But I gotta be honest, when we drafted
- 31:01Speaker 3: him in the third round, like there wasn't this explosion
- 31:03Speaker 3: of excitement in the building. It was like, oh, okay, yeah,
- 31:08Speaker 3: well remember him, I know him in college. Yeah, he's
- 31:11Speaker 3: pretty good. He's pretty good. And the guy's like he's
- 31:13Speaker 3: he competes his ass off, you know, like we knew,
- 31:15Speaker 3: like we knew he had all the makeup. But I
- 31:17Speaker 3: think I think John really had the vision for who
- 31:21Speaker 3: he was. And then Pete kind of warmed up. And
- 31:23Speaker 3: then because of who Pete is what he believed the
- 31:27Speaker 3: more he got to know the guy, he's like, Okay,
- 31:29Speaker 3: this is a special guy.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:31Speaker 3: And but like the rest of us were like, oh okay,
- 31:36Speaker 3: and a cool draft story. So I so my wife's
- 31:39Speaker 3: nine months no, no, no, not nine months. She was
- 31:43Speaker 3: she was she was twenty eight. She was twenty eight. Yeah,
- 31:49Speaker 3: I'm trying to think, no, no, thirty five. He's thirty five
- 31:51Speaker 3: weeks pregnant. Okay, she's he's right, then, yeah, she's but
- 31:54Speaker 3: she's pretty early anyway. So we have like an install
- 31:57Speaker 3: that morning. You know, it's the second day of the draft.
- 31:59Speaker 3: So she calls me from the gym. She's like, I
- 32:02Speaker 3: don't feel right. So I go home, take her to
- 32:04Speaker 3: the hospital and get her all checked in, settled in.
- 32:08Speaker 3: They're like, hey, it's gonna be a while. You're probably
- 32:11Speaker 3: not gonna have this this baby today, but you're gonna
- 32:13Speaker 3: have to be on bed rest. So I'm like, okay,
- 32:15Speaker 3: she's all settled in. I go back to the office.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Of course, rookie Dad, rookie dad. But so I go
- 32:22Speaker 3: back to the office. I'm sitting there and then the
- 32:25Speaker 3: rounds are going. We draft Russell Wilson. It's like, oh, okay, great,
- 32:29Speaker 3: we got a quarterback. You know, see what happens with
- 32:31Speaker 3: this whole story. And then and then I end up
- 32:34Speaker 3: going back to the hospital just hang out with her.
- 32:36Speaker 3: And as I get there, they're like, just kidding, your
- 32:39Speaker 3: babies showing up today. So it's so so two men
- 32:44Speaker 3: that will forever change my life. April twenty seventh, See
- 32:50Speaker 3: what year was that, That would have been twenty twenty twelve. Yeah,
- 32:53Speaker 3: April twenty seven, twenty twelve, Russell Wilson Benjamin Kanal has
- 32:57Speaker 3: two men who would like forever changed my life. Love
- 32:59Speaker 3: this who I love just like all on one day.
- 33:02Speaker 3: It's just unbelievable and it's so good, dude, I love that.
- 33:05Speaker 3: And you'll for Yeah, you'll forever be link You're in bed,
- 33:09Speaker 3: will forever.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Be linked to Uh to Russell, I'm sure he's wearing
- 33:11Speaker 1: the jersey no matter what team he's on.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Oh loves and didn't know it at the time, right like,
- 33:16Speaker 3: but so to that point in a nutshell, Russell comes
- 33:21Speaker 3: in and I won't I'll never forget this. So Pete
- 33:25Speaker 3: tells a Tavars like, the reps are going to go
- 33:29Speaker 3: to Matt Flynn and Russell. We've seen you, We've seen
- 33:32Speaker 3: you for a year, we've seen your career in Minnesota.
- 33:37Speaker 3: We know what you can do, and he's under contract
- 33:40Speaker 3: and all that's like preseason, you're not going to play
- 33:42Speaker 3: much training camp. You're going to get the third reps
- 33:46Speaker 3: because we got to see Matt and Russell kind of
- 33:50Speaker 3: see what they can do. And I'll and really the
- 33:53Speaker 3: thing that separated Russ from the beginning, which guys kind
- 33:58Speaker 3: of rolled their eyes at it first, but he knew
- 34:00Speaker 3: what he wanted to do, and then he would he
- 34:01Speaker 3: would talk to the guys like, you know, it wasn't
- 34:03Speaker 3: twenty two, you know, he was like twenty four or
- 34:05Speaker 3: twenty five something, and he'd be like, hey, this backside
- 34:08Speaker 3: of this route, Sydney Rice, you know, be ready for
- 34:10Speaker 3: this if they rotate away.
- 34:12Speaker 1: And he's like, I'm a five year veteran, like bro,
- 34:14Speaker 1: Like he tell me.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm like and there's some eye rolling and
- 34:18Speaker 3: like and then he go out there and rip it
- 34:21Speaker 3: and he meant it, and he would be he was
- 34:25Speaker 3: driving himself. He's so hard on himself. He's just out
- 34:28Speaker 3: working people. He had a mindset for where he was
- 34:30Speaker 3: going and he was telling us, I'm here and I'm
- 34:33Speaker 3: serious about this. I'm not going to just take a number.
- 34:36Speaker 3: I'm not going to just fall into where people think
- 34:38Speaker 3: I should. There's no should here. I got a plan.
- 34:41Speaker 3: I'm going this way he wants to come. And so
- 34:43Speaker 3: it was pretty clear the person, you know, that of
- 34:48Speaker 3: how he was driven. And then it all kind of
- 34:49Speaker 3: came together preseason going to the Uh going to the
- 34:55Speaker 3: Chiefs and Matt had like elbow tendonitis Okay, So we
- 35:01Speaker 3: started rust that day and the ball moved. We scored
- 35:05Speaker 3: points again. It was like the you know, it was
- 35:09Speaker 3: like the third third week in a row that that happened,
- 35:11Speaker 3: and he just kept every time he go in, the
- 35:13Speaker 3: ball would move. We put points up on the board
- 35:16Speaker 3: and it was like is this couldn't this be real?
- 35:18Speaker 3: So but it was really fun. It was a really
- 35:21Speaker 3: it was a real challenge. We dove full, We took
- 35:23Speaker 3: all the notes and the stats and it was a
- 35:25Speaker 3: really cool time.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yeah, in an amazing era with Russell Wilson, obviously, all
- 35:29Speaker 1: the Pro Bowls, the All Pros, the playoff appearances. You
- 35:32Speaker 1: guys win a Super Bowl, Yeah, compete in another, and
- 35:35Speaker 1: then Russell leaves and here's Geno Smith as a quarterback,
- 35:41Speaker 1: a guy who's been around the league, like you were
- 35:43Speaker 1: talking about Tavares Jackson. We kind of know what Geno
- 35:45Speaker 1: Smith is, and yet he joins the Seattle Seahawks and
- 35:49Speaker 1: has this incredible backup run and then amazing, amazing year
- 35:54Speaker 1: under you as a starter. What do you remember of
- 35:56Speaker 1: the Geno Smith? You know time where he gets the
- 36:00Speaker 1: torch and it's it's his time to take it.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it was cool. It was a It was a
- 36:05Speaker 3: celebration of a couple of years of conversations, work study.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Brian Schottenheimer really kind of starting that that deal with
- 36:15Speaker 3: Gino and like really cleaning Gino up fundamentally. We just
- 36:21Speaker 3: for fun before we left, we watched training camp, you know,
- 36:25Speaker 3: coming into training camp, and like there were some little
- 36:27Speaker 3: things that he cleaned up from a technical standpoint, but like,
- 36:32Speaker 3: I mean, the guy was like seventy eight percent completion
- 36:35Speaker 3: in his first camp with the Seahawks, you know, backup,
- 36:38Speaker 3: you know there there, like it's so so he yeah,
- 36:44Speaker 3: and he so he clearly was a veteran. He knew
- 36:46Speaker 3: where the ball was supposed to go. No one throws
- 36:48Speaker 3: a prettier ball than Gino Smith. Just it spins tight,
- 36:52Speaker 3: he's accurate, like he's got the right amount of zip,
- 36:55Speaker 3: but he's got touch, like he's so all those things
- 36:58Speaker 3: were there and it was just but we had Russ right,
- 37:03Speaker 3: So so you won't even you don't even take your
- 37:05Speaker 3: brain there immediately. But so then just just the celebration
- 37:11Speaker 3: of a couple of years of work, of conversations of
- 37:15Speaker 3: Geno saying I know I still got it once I
- 37:19Speaker 3: get a chance. This is how I'm gonna do it,
- 37:21Speaker 3: you know, like he he was like forward thinking with
- 37:23Speaker 3: his with his words. He was super He had a
- 37:27Speaker 3: lot of beliefs still in his own ability and his talent,
- 37:30Speaker 3: and so so as I come along, you know, really
- 37:33Speaker 3: it was just about like for me, I I was
- 37:37Speaker 3: there kind of through the whole process and then once
- 37:40Speaker 3: once I get you know, I'm just there to just
- 37:42Speaker 3: like maintain and reinforce you're you're a you're a badass.
- 37:47Speaker 3: You're a bad Yeah, you belong here, you know, like
- 37:53Speaker 3: keep your head up. Things bad things are going to happen.
- 37:56Speaker 3: But look, look you're leading everybody. They're looking to you. Now,
- 38:00Speaker 3: let's you know, just for me, it was just from
- 38:01Speaker 3: a personal personal standpoint, like big big picture life philosophy,
- 38:07Speaker 3: How does football fit into this? How do I fit
- 38:09Speaker 3: in as a leader, as a veteran guy, you know
- 38:12Speaker 3: a lot of those things, and then just polishing the
- 38:15Speaker 3: stuff that he was already working on those last two years.
- 38:18Speaker 3: So just given Shoddy a lot of credit for for
- 38:21Speaker 3: really helping Gino, helping me to just kind of get
- 38:23Speaker 3: a plan together, and then for us to just be
- 38:26Speaker 3: there to celebrate it together. It was really cool.
- 38:36Speaker 1: I mean, how rare is it that anybody in this
- 38:37Speaker 1: coaching life can see their kids go to the same schools,
- 38:41Speaker 1: have the friends, and not have to uproot their lives
- 38:43Speaker 1: every other year. But you had that opportunity, and you
- 38:45Speaker 1: were there in Seattle and you were doing that, and
- 38:48Speaker 1: then Tampa calls and you left, obviously for an amazing opportunity.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Can you take us through that part of your life.
- 38:55Speaker 3: Yeah? Absolutely, just you know they the coolest part about
- 39:01Speaker 3: the whole thing was it didn't come along by really
- 39:06Speaker 3: reaching out and striving for trying to like create a job.
- 39:11Speaker 3: You know, it was really just and thankfully for Pete
- 39:15Speaker 3: and for a bunch of great players, it was really
- 39:18Speaker 3: a natural process. You know. Just I bounced around. I
- 39:22Speaker 3: coached receivers, I coached quarterbacks. I was past game coordinator,
- 39:25Speaker 3: so I got to step out of the position room
- 39:27Speaker 3: and kind of look at watch the offensive coordinator do
- 39:30Speaker 3: his thing. And so I'm just collecting all these lessons
- 39:33Speaker 3: watching Pete, you know, like in those years where I
- 39:36Speaker 3: was past game coordinator. When you're not coaching a position directly,
- 39:41Speaker 3: you get to help a lot if you can take
- 39:44Speaker 3: that kind of mindset, just like help serve make extra
- 39:46Speaker 3: cutups so how can I help? How can I do
- 39:48Speaker 3: these things? But then I can also take a step
- 39:50Speaker 3: back and say, look at Pete and the decisions he makes.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Look out he schedules his day. Look how the coordinator
- 39:55Speaker 3: does these different rhythms. So like, I don't think there
- 39:58Speaker 3: could have been a guy more ready for his first
- 40:01Speaker 3: offensive coordinator job than me.
- 40:03Speaker 1: And and last year you've been in and that was
- 40:05Speaker 1: almost not one of these guys that maybe you are saying, well,
- 40:09Speaker 1: why not me? Why have I not been? Were you
- 40:11Speaker 1: one of those? Did you start wondering after five, seven,
- 40:13Speaker 1: six or whatever it is? Yeah?
- 40:16Speaker 3: I did, Actually I did, and I realized it didn't
- 40:19Speaker 3: get me anywhere, you know, And so I was either
- 40:21Speaker 3: gonna like, agent up, let's push this thing. Let's just
- 40:25Speaker 3: go get a job, you know, or I can say, man,
- 40:29Speaker 3: I've got this sweet opportunity here, let's raise our kids,
- 40:31Speaker 3: let's be here kind of see the NFL evolve over
- 40:34Speaker 3: the thirteen years from one spot, you know, with one lens,
- 40:38Speaker 3: with Pete Carroll when forever philosophy lens, you know, like,
- 40:42Speaker 3: so that was that was really special, you know, But
- 40:44Speaker 3: I just I try to go there, and I just
- 40:47Speaker 3: felt like it was really like contrived, and I was
- 40:49Speaker 3: trying to force something, and I was like, Okay, hold on,
- 40:51Speaker 3: let's just let's just be here, and like even just
- 40:55Speaker 3: to the even the summer before I got the Tampa job,
- 40:58Speaker 3: we're actually right up here where I'm at right now
- 41:00Speaker 3: in uh In uh White Salmon, Washington, and we're we're
- 41:04Speaker 3: we're sitting we actually hiked Mount Adams, the beautiful, beautiful
- 41:08Speaker 3: hike here, snow capped year round, and we're at the
- 41:10Speaker 3: top and my wife and I were sitting up there
- 41:11Speaker 3: and we're like, Okay, we're home. We're never going anywhere.
- 41:15Speaker 1: This is a content feeling of like, hey, this is
- 41:18Speaker 1: the lot and guess what. We're blessed. It's amazing and
- 41:22Speaker 1: we're happy here. And then within twelve months the call
- 41:26Speaker 1: from Tampa comes. Who makes that call? Is it? Is
- 41:29Speaker 1: it Jason Light? Is it Todd Bowles? How's it all
- 41:31Speaker 1: go down?
- 41:32Speaker 3: Yeah? It was, it was Todd. And then it started
- 41:36Speaker 3: off as a zoom and then it turned into an
- 41:39Speaker 3: in person interview and I spent probably four or five
- 41:44Speaker 3: hours with Todd just kind of going through all the
- 41:48Speaker 3: different things that you would need to organize and talk
- 41:51Speaker 3: about from an offensive standpoint, I was like his I
- 41:56Speaker 3: want to say I was his thirteenth or fourteenth offensive coordinator,
- 42:00Speaker 3: but the interview interview, for real, I was like interview
- 42:04Speaker 3: number thirteen or fourteen. So there's a good and a
- 42:07Speaker 3: bad to that, right. The good part is hopefully like
- 42:10Speaker 3: he's kind of like worn out. Maybe I can like bang, you.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Know, just yeah, especially with your juice.
- 42:14Speaker 3: Yeah, just trying to wake him up a little bit
- 42:16Speaker 3: here and then. And then the downside of it was
- 42:20Speaker 3: like I could tell he was like completely gassed with
- 42:24Speaker 3: the whole process and just like man like pick out,
- 42:27Speaker 3: how many more of these do we have? You know?
- 42:28Speaker 3: But what if thorough process to just like you know,
- 42:32Speaker 3: talk to everybody and just accumulate it. But so anyway,
- 42:36Speaker 3: it was we had a great time. The philosophies. I
- 42:41Speaker 3: think what I learned now, you know, just over the
- 42:44Speaker 3: last couple of years talking to a couple of different
- 42:46Speaker 3: coaches is just the person the personalities are different, what
- 42:50Speaker 3: they're after is the same.
- 42:53Speaker 1: What a great phrase, the personality that what they're all
- 42:56Speaker 1: after is the same, Like we all want to win.
- 42:59Speaker 3: They're after the same thing. It's like the principles of
- 43:02Speaker 3: take care of the ball minimize explosives on defense, play
- 43:07Speaker 3: hard toughness, like all the same principles, just how you
- 43:11Speaker 3: how you bring it about and what you know, what
- 43:14Speaker 3: environment you create to get those principles across. I guess
- 43:17Speaker 3: just a different but but I could tell coming out
- 43:20Speaker 3: of the interview that the principles aligned, and hopefully I
- 43:24Speaker 3: was able to show him like this may be my
- 43:27Speaker 3: first job that I'm interviewing for, but I've been I've
- 43:31Speaker 3: been waiting for this for a long time. And so
- 43:34Speaker 3: and then that's, you know, kind of how this whole
- 43:37Speaker 3: thing has gone pretty quickly.
- 43:38Speaker 1: I think, yeah, and I got to say you got
- 43:41Speaker 1: You probably joined in January. I would imagine early February
- 43:44Speaker 1: that Tampa job. They they're in the post Brady mode
- 43:48Speaker 1: where it's like this, like wait and see what's Brady
- 43:50Speaker 1: gonna do. No one expected anything from the Buccaneers a
- 43:53Speaker 1: year ago, especially on the offensive side of the ball,
- 43:56Speaker 1: and you get another cool project. He talked about Geno Smith,
- 43:59Speaker 1: but here comes a Heisman Trophy winner who has taken
- 44:03Speaker 1: the league by storm. Was one of the featured guys
- 44:05Speaker 1: in the NFL one hundred camp and what many thought
- 44:08Speaker 1: was his last stop. Baker Mayfield walks in the door,
- 44:11Speaker 1: talk about that union and have the two of you
- 44:14Speaker 1: guys jailed.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, so two years in a row. It's
- 44:18Speaker 3: a full on quarterback competition. So it was Jane and
- 44:22Speaker 3: Drew Locke and then it was Baker and Kyle Trask,
- 44:27Speaker 3: and I knew it was going to be so important
- 44:30Speaker 3: for Baker to earn that job, to win that job,
- 44:37Speaker 3: and I think immediately what I noticed about him coming
- 44:41Speaker 3: in was this like humility, and it was I didn't
- 44:45Speaker 3: know him from before, I had never met him, and
- 44:50Speaker 3: you know, I just saw some of the ups and
- 44:53Speaker 3: downs of his career in the NFL and college and
- 44:56Speaker 3: kind of saw this this personality, you know, and I
- 44:59Speaker 3: didn't really know what to expect, you know, And so
- 45:03Speaker 3: as we started talking, I just felt this like huge
- 45:06Speaker 3: hunger and this humility of like like I'll do whatever
- 45:10Speaker 3: I need to do, I'll learn whatever I need to
- 45:13Speaker 3: learn for this opportunity. And it was this really high
- 45:17Speaker 3: regard for the opportunity to be there. And so it
- 45:23Speaker 3: was really cool for he and I to just kind
- 45:25Speaker 3: of sit down early in the process and just go, yeah,
- 45:27Speaker 3: me too, Like we just kind of like, isn't this great?
- 45:31Speaker 3: Isn't this great what we get to do here? Like
- 45:32Speaker 3: we just shoot, man, let's just let's let's get let's
- 45:35Speaker 3: get the basics down to good football. Let's just have
- 45:37Speaker 3: a blast doing it. And that's really what happened.
- 45:41Speaker 1: I love that. And you guys have this incredible run,
- 45:44Speaker 1: you win a playoff game. Head coaching opportunity? Was that
- 45:49Speaker 1: in your I mean even when you're with Pete and
- 45:52Speaker 1: you're watching him and even when you take this up
- 45:54Speaker 1: it's a coordinator job, and you're like, look if we
- 45:55Speaker 1: have a good seat Panthers. They also interviewed about fourteen
- 46:00Speaker 1: people for this head coaching job, and hey, what you
- 46:03Speaker 1: do with Zoom, with David Tepper and whoever else? And
- 46:07Speaker 1: what's your thoughts when you get that call?
- 46:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean floored, you know, like but but also
- 46:13Speaker 3: like I wasn't surprised. I thought, look at the opportunity,
- 46:18Speaker 3: you know, with especially with Baker and especially with Gino.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Was it was like I could that wasn't my what
- 46:26Speaker 3: was driving me, but I could see how the contrast
- 46:29Speaker 3: of the expectation and then the performance. Yeah, I knew,
- 46:33Speaker 3: like nobody expected anything out of Gina. Well, when we
- 46:36Speaker 3: get him playing well, that's going to create some noise.
- 46:39Speaker 3: And then Baker Baker comes in here and everyone's like, ah, yeah, yeah,
- 46:43Speaker 3: you know it's Baker Mayfield whatever. We've seen it, and
- 46:46Speaker 3: it's like right. And then when when the when the
- 46:49Speaker 3: product exceeds expectation, I knew that's just gonna naturally grab attention.
- 46:54Speaker 3: Tampa Post, Tom Brady all that, like low expectation, three
- 46:59Speaker 3: to five wins, people are just like throwing stuff out
- 47:02Speaker 3: there like nobody expects anything from them. So I just knew,
- 47:04Speaker 3: like this is a set up up that when we
- 47:08Speaker 3: do have success, it's going to create it's going to
- 47:11Speaker 3: cost some some noise, it's going to create some attention.
- 47:14Speaker 3: Just be ready, you know, be ready and make sure
- 47:16Speaker 3: I have my ducks in a row and so that
- 47:19Speaker 3: if I do get those phone calls at some point,
- 47:21Speaker 3: I'm ready. I have my stuff organized and so like
- 47:26Speaker 3: super like not taken, not taken by surprise on the situation,
- 47:31Speaker 3: but also just like I wasn't just focusing on that
- 47:34Speaker 3: because it's not like you know, you're on a you're
- 47:37Speaker 3: on a championship team, and it's like people are after
- 47:39Speaker 3: you as a coordinator, is like nobody knows who I
- 47:42Speaker 3: am Yeah pretty.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Much, you know sou.
- 47:46Speaker 3: But that was and that was fun too, because just
- 47:48Speaker 3: here we go, just another challenge, you know. Here's so
- 47:51Speaker 3: it's like Gino's story, Baker story, Panther story. It's like,
- 47:55Speaker 3: here's just another great opportunity for a group of guys
- 48:00Speaker 3: and women to come together and say, why not us,
- 48:04Speaker 3: you know, let's just let's just play good football. Let's
- 48:07Speaker 3: just see what happens and see where it takes us.
- 48:10Speaker 1: So now you're what is it. It's June right now, you're
- 48:13Speaker 1: about five months into this thing. Why not the Panthers
- 48:16Speaker 1: take us through the Panthers and what you've seen so
- 48:19Speaker 1: far and how the Dave canal is there has begun.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Yeah, a great core group of veteran players with a
- 48:28Speaker 3: super high football character. I don't know them all really
- 48:33Speaker 3: closely on a personal level, but I say football character
- 48:36Speaker 3: because they're the types of guys that you want when
- 48:39Speaker 3: they're in the building. They treat each other with respect,
- 48:43Speaker 3: with love and respect, they treat they treat everyone in
- 48:46Speaker 3: the building well. They work their tails off in the
- 48:48Speaker 3: weight room, like they really go for it on the
- 48:52Speaker 3: football field. Like, so there's you know, it's Shaq Thompson.
- 48:54Speaker 3: You know, it's Derek Brown, who's still pretty young, but
- 48:56Speaker 3: he's got some years, Chuba Hubbard, Adam Felen, Andy Dalton, Taylor,
- 49:02Speaker 3: moten Our right tackle, Josie Jewel we got from Denver,
- 49:08Speaker 3: Jordan Fuller, Nick Scott, Xavier Woods.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Like there's there when around the league.
- 49:16Speaker 3: Yes, there's so many veteran players with high high football
- 49:22Speaker 3: character that that's the locker room culture is fantastic. Great,
- 49:28Speaker 3: it's that part is established. And then you combine that
- 49:31Speaker 3: with young talent, some veteran talent. You bring in guys
- 49:36Speaker 3: like Jadavion Clowney, Robert Hunt, Damian Lewis, Dane Jackson, you know,
- 49:43Speaker 3: some of the safeties that talked about. So and then
- 49:46Speaker 3: the draft, a couple of the early draft picks, you know,
- 49:50Speaker 3: Xavier Legete, Jonathan Brooks, Trevin Wallace, you know, jade Jatavian Sanders.
- 49:57Speaker 3: So I see a great combination of some experience, high
- 50:02Speaker 3: football character, some talent in spots. Now there's a reason,
- 50:07Speaker 3: there's a reason that we were two and fifteen and
- 50:11Speaker 3: we have to continue to like bring more talent into
- 50:14Speaker 3: our roster. So you fill out the depth of it,
- 50:17Speaker 3: you know, and the great teams that I've been on
- 50:19Speaker 3: in Seattle over the years, up and down, the great
- 50:23Speaker 3: ones you had depth, you know, and so I think
- 50:26Speaker 3: that's that's really where we are is can we establish
- 50:29Speaker 3: can we establish our starters? Can we develop depth? And
- 50:34Speaker 3: we got ways to go?
- 50:35Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, what's your message to them? Because like
- 50:40Speaker 1: Sean Payton last year, whether you love him or not,
- 50:43Speaker 1: you know, I worked with him at Fox, so I
- 50:44Speaker 1: have a relationship with him. He came in there and
- 50:46Speaker 1: he dropped a couple bombs in the media to try
- 50:48Speaker 1: to inspire his guys, you know, talking about the previous
- 50:51Speaker 1: coaching staff that was a downtrodden group when he got there,
- 50:54Speaker 1: and he was trying to light a fire. What do
- 50:56Speaker 1: you do to a squad that was two and fifteens
- 50:58Speaker 1: looking at the locker room and saying are we?
- 51:02Speaker 3: What are we?
- 51:03Speaker 1: What do you do as a new coach? How do
- 51:04Speaker 1: you inspire them with words?
- 51:07Speaker 3: Yeah? I think to put it simply, I just said,
- 51:09Speaker 3: we just need to get our football right. And the
- 51:13Speaker 3: comment there was what I was trying to do. What
- 51:17Speaker 3: I'm still trying to do with that is like, forget
- 51:20Speaker 3: about the side stories, guys, Like if we can just
- 51:24Speaker 3: play good football. The side stories, the headlines will right themselves,
- 51:30Speaker 3: but can we just get our football right? And that
- 51:33Speaker 3: really was just a reflection on like, it wasn't the
- 51:37Speaker 3: greatest brand of offensive football it was. There were things
- 51:42Speaker 3: up front, there were things schematically that we needed to
- 51:45Speaker 3: work on, and that wasn't to NFL standard and certainly
- 51:51Speaker 3: not to Carolina Panthers twenty twenty four standard. The defensive
- 51:56Speaker 3: side of the football was excellent, and there was still
- 52:00Speaker 3: things to improve on. There's still nuances to grow through
- 52:05Speaker 3: special teams with solid So it's just like, if we
- 52:08Speaker 3: can just get all three phases up to snuff and
- 52:11Speaker 3: get them get us all the same playing field, then
- 52:14Speaker 3: we will compete and we will be able to and
- 52:17Speaker 3: our talent will be able to be showcased better and
- 52:20Speaker 3: we can just have a foundation. And so and I
- 52:22Speaker 3: was like, can we do that? Can we take care
- 52:24Speaker 3: of the football?
- 52:25Speaker 1: Yes?
- 52:25Speaker 3: Can we try to take can we try to take
- 52:26Speaker 3: it away on defense? And can we just execute the
- 52:30Speaker 3: fun most fundamental part of our technique and our scheme.
- 52:34Speaker 3: If we can do that, guys, one game at a time,
- 52:38Speaker 3: then we give ourselves a chance.
- 52:40Speaker 1: Are you excited? I mean, are you loving this.
- 52:42Speaker 3: I'm so excited. And I'm excited because I can see
- 52:46Speaker 3: the challenge to your point of I can see the
- 52:50Speaker 3: challenge of going through the hard times and saying we're
- 52:53Speaker 3: going to be consistent on our messaging. Guys, We're going somewhere.
- 52:56Speaker 3: Let's trust it. Let's fix this, Let's fix these simple things.
- 53:00Speaker 3: I'll show it to you. I'm excited about just giving that,
- 53:03Speaker 3: giving them that consistency in messaging and and really pairing
- 53:08Speaker 3: that with the character the team that we have to go. Okay, everyone,
- 53:12Speaker 3: let's take a deep breath, let's exhale here, let's just
- 53:14Speaker 3: take the next step. So I'm really excited for that.
- 53:19Speaker 1: And you've done all this work with these great quarterbacks
- 53:21Speaker 1: and I wouldn't say that reclamation projects because you were
- 53:24Speaker 1: saying yourself, do you know what's ready? And Baker had it.
- 53:27Speaker 1: What's the message with Bryce Young who had a very look.
- 53:35Speaker 3: Yeah. I think you know. The biggest part with Bryce
- 53:38Speaker 3: is for me, at least, this is my first year
- 53:42Speaker 3: with Bryce Young. I get him after having sixteen games
- 53:47Speaker 3: under his belt. So I think that's the coolest part
- 53:51Speaker 3: for me is rarely do you ever get your young
- 53:54Speaker 3: quarterback with and a little experience, you know what I mean.
- 53:58Speaker 3: So so for me, I know he's not a rookie.
- 54:01Speaker 3: I know that he's a rookie to me, Like, we're
- 54:05Speaker 3: both here together for the first time. So we start
- 54:08Speaker 3: this whole system over, we put in this offense together
- 54:11Speaker 3: for the first time. And he's got he's he's had
- 54:14Speaker 3: some live reps, he's had a bunch of live experiences
- 54:18Speaker 3: that I can draw from, and like, I'm just excited
- 54:22Speaker 3: about the talent. It's it's everything that we saw from
- 54:25Speaker 3: you know, over a year ago when we're doing the
- 54:27Speaker 3: draft evaluation. It's all there. It's all still there. So
- 54:31Speaker 3: it's just like, wait, the guy's athletic, he can get
- 54:35Speaker 3: the ball out quickly, he's a leader, he communicates well,
- 54:38Speaker 3: it's like, oh, he's got everything we need. Okay, Bryce,
- 54:41Speaker 3: just do your part, do your one eleventh, Just do
- 54:45Speaker 3: your quarterback part. You're the point guard, okay, and then
- 54:48Speaker 3: we'll let everybody else do all theirs and we can
- 54:51Speaker 3: dissolve the pressure of like you got to leave, you
- 54:55Speaker 3: got to do this and all that. Totally you're the
- 54:57Speaker 3: one now. It's just not true. I just I just
- 55:00Speaker 3: I have not seen that model of football work and
- 55:03Speaker 3: win in Seattle. We didn't put it all in Russell's plate.
- 55:06Speaker 3: So so that's not the model that we're going to
- 55:08Speaker 3: try to create in Carolina. It's like, no, just do
- 55:10Speaker 3: your part. It takes a whole team.
- 55:12Speaker 1: So my my, you know, armchair quarterback outside. Looking in
- 55:18Speaker 1: free agency, you guys built up that line. You got
- 55:21Speaker 1: great protection inside, which I thought was important. And then
- 55:24Speaker 1: the draft with with Legette and Brooks and Sanders who
- 55:28Speaker 1: you mentioned, it's got some more skill position player, Like
- 55:30Speaker 1: the offense should be significantly better just based on that.
- 55:33Speaker 3: Alone, Yeah, I would agree, you know, and it all
- 55:36Speaker 3: starts with the run game, and so the having having
- 55:39Speaker 3: Robert and Damien in there because I love our backfield,
- 55:42Speaker 3: and then adding Jonathan Brooks just you know, an opportunity
- 55:45Speaker 3: came to us with a really talented guy. And and
- 55:49Speaker 3: then uh just again depth, you know, talent, just keep
- 55:55Speaker 3: adding adding key pieces, challenger roster. You know. So that
- 55:59Speaker 3: was this, that was what this, uh, this draft and
- 56:01Speaker 3: this offseason was all about. But I feel confident that
- 56:04Speaker 3: we'll be able to, you know, to have a successful
- 56:08Speaker 3: run game, which for me opens everything else up and
- 56:10Speaker 3: helps their down and it helps move the ball and
- 56:13Speaker 3: give you more opportunities.
- 56:14Speaker 1: You know, it's dangerous asking about ownership with coaches because
- 56:18Speaker 1: of whatever. But like I have gotten to know David Tepper.
- 56:20Speaker 1: I know he's super excited about you. What's that dynamic
- 56:24Speaker 1: so far have been Like with David and Nicole, who
- 56:26Speaker 1: plays a big role as.
- 56:27Speaker 3: Well, That's that's been fantastic. I see a couple who
- 56:33Speaker 3: is really passionate about their team, you know, and sometimes
- 56:37Speaker 3: Nicole more than David. She just like absolutely loves Panthers
- 56:40Speaker 3: football and the whole thing, the community. Like she's like
- 56:44Speaker 3: so fired up to like served and find like who
- 56:48Speaker 3: can we like, who can we bless? Who can we
- 56:50Speaker 3: go and like spread this? You know, And so that's
- 56:53Speaker 3: kind of like her deals. Like I just want to
- 56:55Speaker 3: come out to practice and and enjoy the energy of
- 56:58Speaker 3: what I'm seeing and hopefully that's what they've seen. And
- 57:01Speaker 3: with David, you know, just you know, to be able
- 57:03Speaker 3: to be with him and pick his brain and like
- 57:06Speaker 3: lean on on the successes that he's had. You know,
- 57:09Speaker 3: he's unbelievably successful in terms of like when we think
- 57:13Speaker 3: of leadership and you know, all those things, and I
- 57:16Speaker 3: just like I'm able to kind of sit with him
- 57:18Speaker 3: and watch him just like courageously bring us together. Okay,
- 57:22Speaker 3: let's evaluate free agency, Let's evaluate the draft process. How
- 57:27Speaker 3: did that go? Guys? How was it?
- 57:29Speaker 1: Like?
- 57:29Speaker 3: What went well? What didn't go well? Why not? And
- 57:33Speaker 3: just like there's no blame, there's none of that. It's
- 57:35Speaker 3: just like, can we speak the truth? Can we go
- 57:38Speaker 3: into things with our eyes open and courageously say, Okay,
- 57:42Speaker 3: this didn't work. Bang, let's fix it, let's move forward.
- 57:45Speaker 3: You know, his encouragement to us has been like when
- 57:47Speaker 3: you can really see, when you can really look at
- 57:49Speaker 3: the things that you don't do well and the things
- 57:52Speaker 3: that you do well and you can grow quickly, then
- 57:55Speaker 3: that's how we find success. And so it's been really
- 57:57Speaker 3: cool to just kind of learn that whole side of
- 57:59Speaker 3: it from him.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, I've done a lot of research
- 58:03Speaker 1: and talk to him about you know, his Wall Street sesses,
- 58:07Speaker 1: and he's not this guy doesn't lose and he bets
- 58:10Speaker 1: on himself. And that's what people say, like what's going
- 58:13Speaker 1: on with the Panthers. I'm like, I wouldn't bet against
- 58:15Speaker 1: Tepper and I wouldn't bet against Canalis. These are two
- 58:18Speaker 1: guys who seem to be on the same page right now,
- 58:22Speaker 1: and I wouldn't bet against Bryce Young either.
- 58:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, I mean I think, uh, I guess
- 58:31Speaker 3: one of the things for me when when when he
- 58:34Speaker 3: hired me, was I go, here's a guy who makes
- 58:38Speaker 3: a living projecting and probably taking things and getting them
- 58:43Speaker 3: right before they're at their full value. And I just
- 58:46Speaker 3: kind of looked at that and I was like, Okay,
- 58:49Speaker 3: so he's got confidence in me that I have a
- 58:51Speaker 3: chance to do this. Now. I know, I'm his third
- 58:54Speaker 3: coach in a pretty short time, and there's been you know,
- 58:58Speaker 3: and especially the last the last staff that was a
- 59:01Speaker 3: quick decision, you know. But but I come into this
- 59:04Speaker 3: thing and I go, Okay, but he's he sees something
- 59:09Speaker 3: in me. He's really excited, and so I think that's
- 59:12Speaker 3: just an encouragement for me to go, all right, thank
- 59:15Speaker 3: you for recognizing, thank you for seeing me, thank you
- 59:18Speaker 3: for seeing this work and this the stuff that's happening here,
- 59:23Speaker 3: and for believing and giving me a chance to do it.
- 59:26Speaker 3: So I don't know if that makes sense, but I
- 59:29Speaker 3: just like it does.
- 59:31Speaker 1: You're the housing crisis or your COVID, you know, all
- 59:35Speaker 1: the things that he been on before everyone else did.
- 59:38Speaker 1: You might be that and it works out for everybody. Okay,
- 59:42Speaker 1: quick questions, we're going to wrap. I know you're giving
- 59:44Speaker 1: me a lot of your time here. You openly talk
- 59:47Speaker 1: about your faith and your father and what you know
- 59:52Speaker 1: religion and church means to you. How has that helped
- 59:55Speaker 1: you along the way in moments where there might be
- 59:57Speaker 1: doubt or there might be questions about what the future
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: you know lays out for you.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: Yeah, super critical. And and this is where this is
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: where I'm able to come into difficult situations. And number one,
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: because my identity isn't football. My identity football is not
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: first and foremost of my life. And like, this is
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: where I make all my decisions about this is this
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: is what you know really makes me. So I'm able
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: to come into challenging situations with a little better understanding
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: of like, yeah, this is scary, but this is also
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: not like this, it's not going to make or break
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: me as a human in my identity in Christ and
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: my identity with the Lord is so so I'm able
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: to courageously just say, yeah, let's go for it. Okay,
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: another great opportunity. Yeah, let's go for it. The possibilities
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: are endless, you know, And just and then in those
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: in those situations, I think the part that that I've
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: had to lean on the most, especially over the last year.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: You know, in Tampa we lost six out of seven
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: games right in the middle of the season. Yeah, so
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: we lost, we lost four straight, six out of seven.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: And to be able to just show up and be
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: the same guy every day, because what's most important to
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: me as I come into this building is that I
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: love and respect the people I work with, that I'm honorable,
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: that I do my best work, that I that I
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: honor God Colossians three twenty three. Whatever you do, do
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: it as if I'm to the Lord. And so for me,
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: it's just I look at the situation and I go okay.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: But I get to lead by example by just pouring
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: into my work regardless of the circumstance, regardless of what
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: headline was just written about us in low expectations, I
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: don't care, come in here, love people, work hard, and
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: then just leave the rest up to the Lord. And
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: that's that's been such a huge, such a huge thing
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: for me, especially when we were losing, and like I
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: wanted to make it about me. How do I fix this,
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: How do I control this? How do I help this part,
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: how do I do this, I do this, I do that,
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: and it's just like, it's not about me. It's not
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: about me, and I don't control all the outcomes. So
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: just work hard and treat people well and love people,
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: and the right outcome will happen. Yes, do on our
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: ability to teach it, our talent level of our players.
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: That will take care of all these things if I
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: just continue to just honor it, and so it keeps
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: it from making it really personal, you know, towards others
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: or towards myself, and just allows me to just stay
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: steady and consistent throughout it. I'm gonna need that for
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: sure this year, and you will.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: You will. My last question, let's go back to that
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: that kid coming out of college who's got the weights
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: and a few plates and it was a tax right
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: off for somebody else, and you're like, let's run a
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: little gym over here, let's do our own thing. Put
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: yourself in that guy's shoes and have him look at
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: the life that you've lived, in the career that you've had.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: What would you say your one piece of advice to
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: that kid, now, knowing what you know, what would you
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: tell that kid back then? If he said to you, Hey,
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: someday I'd like to get involved in coaching, what would
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: be your guidance?
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: I would say, you're doing great. So you're doing great,
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: because it just it started with loving people, and it
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: just started with going back to a community that needed something.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: They needed what I learned in college, and they needed
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: that encouragement, and they needed some place to be that
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: wasn't out on the streets doing crazy stuff. And so
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: I think it was just I would just encourage that
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: guy to like to just keep loving people and just
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: meet needs and like that's that's kind of been the
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: roadmap to getting here, is just building boyds and meeting
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: needs along the way and not being afraid to step
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: into roles I might not have been completely equipped for,
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: but to say, I'll learn what I need to learn.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: So just I think just the courageous I would just
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: encourage that guy just and then and then I would
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: probably smack him around and tell him to like, really
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: pay more attention to your wife too, by the way,
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: because she's she's amazing, and uh, I wouldn't want to
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: lose all those years. That's probably more of the stuff
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: that I would spend time.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: The personal life the being with the family and not
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: not not living in the office, that kind of stuff.
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: Yeah, not living in the office, and just not making
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: stupid decisions like in my marriage and stuff, the stuff
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: that my wife and I went through that I my
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: decisions took us through that could have been avoided just
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: by taking myself out of certain situations. And so I
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: think I would probably just I would have I would
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: probably spend most of my time there talking to that guy.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I yeah. Tell you, we have a lot of
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: coaches on on you like there's so much toxicity in
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: our world, and I turn on you know, some of
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: the television channels, even we're talking about sports, it's this
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: guy sucks, this guy can't win the big one. Dave,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: I talked to you. I feel like there's a light,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: Like I feel lifted. I'm not trying to blow tires
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: into your your your your blow air into your tires here,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: but like you have a very soothing and encouraging way
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: about you that I think is very contagious.
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Peter. I feel the same way. You know,
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: whenever you send me a text or give me a
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: call or whatever it's, it always starts off with something
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: super uplifting, and it's like it's just a reminder like, Yeah,
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: life is really good, isn't it. Even when it's hard,
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: it's like still good, you know. And so I really
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: appreciate that about you too. It's really encouraging.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Okay, So go enjoy Mount Adams. Did I get that right?
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Mount Adams? Yep, yep, Go enjoy Mount Adams, the beautiful
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Washington country. You're talking to a city slicker right here,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: you talking about hikes and all these things. I'm like, I
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: don't know about all that, but you seem to be
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: able to unplug and get to the mountains and gosh,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: you're up right now. And for the listeners who are
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: listening to this, it's seven point thirty Pacific, and Dave said, sure,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: let's do it, and let's start the way that way.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: And I so appreciate you for getting up early. Go
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: enjoy the rest of your week, Go enjoy the rest
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: of your off season, and then let's get after it.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: I'm excited to watch the Panthers this year. Man.
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: Awesome, man, I appreciate you. Thanks for the opportunity to
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: just share about what we're doing and some of the
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: things in my life too. Just it's really cool to
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: just remember where I came from. So bad and you
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: enjoy some time off too, Man, get all the microphone,
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: get your headphones off, and.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: I know, I know, all right, Dave Canalis. Awesome stuff
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: is always the season with Peter Schreger bringing you another
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: great one, coach, good luck this season.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: Man, Hey, thanks a lot talk.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: So I gotta say, uh, there's a certain calmness and
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: like confidence that he's got aaron that like I am,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: I'm all in on Dave.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Kaz That was Yeah. I mean, it's a good resume
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: to say. I came from working with the Seahawks with Gino,
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: who was nobody's top choice for quarterback and outperformed everyone's expectations.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: And then I went to Tampa with Baker and saw
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: the fire and Baker like wanting to succeed, and I
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: saw how important it was for him to win the job.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: And now he's going to Bryce and I liked, I
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: really loved his quote about like you focus on being
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: the quarterback, You're not doing everything. We're going to get
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: the offensive line to do their part, the receivers to
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: do their part, and that will let you succeed. And
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: that's a nice way of looking at this, So I
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: really enjoyed that.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: I also like the temper part at the end. I
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: was a little nervous that I was going to mention
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: the owner, and then you get like, you know, it's
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: like he was very open about it. He's a interesting
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: dynamic force in the NFL right now, and it's been
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: through three head coaches in three years or whatever it is.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: But here's a guy who's had a ton of Wall
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Street success, gambles and risks some things before everyone else
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: isn't on it, and has hit the jackpots several times,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: and it's like, okay. And I remember Kevin Demoff came
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: on this podcast and talked about McVeigh and was like,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: he's thirty years old, but if we don't hire him now,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: someone else will next year and we'll be like, well,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: we didn' hire him because he was thirty. That was
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: the wrong reason. With Canalis, obviously, Tepper sees something that
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: he sees as an emerging you know, blue chipper, and
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: it's like, let's get him in the building now. Whether
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: or not he's had a ton of offensive coordinator experience,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: whether or not he's a household dame, whether or not
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: he's ever been a head coach before, and Canalis knows
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: that and views himself that way. That's very self aware
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: and I really thought that was cool.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: And like I think you said, it wasn't this is
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: the only guy who got the interview. There were yeah, fourteen,
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: over a dozen guys that they interviewed, and this is
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: who Tepera was like, yes, this is of these, like
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: you said, stocks, this is the one I'm picking is Canalis.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: So that's promising.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: I really enjoy talking to him. They're gonna be better
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: this year. I don't know how good they're gonna be,
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: but that's not for here or for now. I just
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: want everyone to get to know Dave Canalis. Great great
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: juice to start the off season with the Carolina Panthers
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: and then training camps right around the corner. Aaron, thank you.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: I want to thank our intern at. iHeart Tyler Grosso.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Am I saying it right? Grosso? Tyler, get on the mic.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: What do you got here? Do we did? I? Grosso
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: junior at Penn State killing it right now at iHeart
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: in an internship with the podcast group, which I think
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: is so cool. I wish I could do done something
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: like that in College. Good luck to you, Tyler, You're
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: gonna kick butt. And then for all the listeners, thanks
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: for hanging in here and listening during the off season.
