- 0:00Speaker 1: November 24th, 1953 brings us to Los Angeles with Dragnet,
- 0:05Speaker 1: episode 223, The Big Present. On NBC, Jack Webb stars
- 0:11Speaker 1: as Detective Sergeant Joe Friday, assigned to burglary detail as
- 0:15Speaker 1: a burglar targets neighborhood markets across the city. The thief
- 0:20Speaker 1: leaves behind a calling card that gives police a name,
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Milk Bottle Bandit, but not an identity or whereabouts,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and Friday must work from the sparse evidence left by
- 0:31Speaker 1: the break-ins. Ben Alexander, Sammy Ogg, and Olin Soul are
- 0:36Speaker 1: heard with Webb in this case from Dragnet's 1953 radio run. Now,
- 0:42Speaker 1: back to the golden age of radio.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, The story you're about to hear is true.
- 0:52Speaker 3: The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Drag men.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to burglary detail. In
- 1:08Speaker 2: the past two months, a thief has broken into 18 markets.
- 1:12Speaker 2: There's no lead to his whereabouts. No clue to his identity.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Your job, get him.
- 1:23Speaker 3: It was Monday, December 14th.
- 1:25Speaker 5: It was cold in Los Angeles. We were working the
- 1:26Speaker 5: day watch out of burglary detail. My partner's Frank Smith.
- 1:29Speaker 5: The boss is Captain Bernard.
- 1:30Speaker 3: My name's Friday.
- 1:31Speaker 5: We were on our way out of the office when
- 1:33Speaker 5: it was 8.05 a.m. when we got to Georgia Street
- 1:34Speaker 5: Juvenile Bureau. Sergeant Lindsey Simmons' office.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:39Speaker 6: Well, did you give it to him?
- 1:41Speaker 7: Uh-huh.
- 1:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:44Speaker 2: What'd he say?
- 1:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48Speaker 6: When'd he come back?
- 1:50Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 1:51Speaker 6: Well, did he have it for you?
- 1:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 6: Well, that'll teach you not to go that route anymore.
- 1:58Speaker 6: All right, Patrick. Tell the sergeant to call me when
- 2:00Speaker 6: he gets back.
- 2:01Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Hi, Friday Smith.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Hi, Lindsey.
- 2:04Speaker 6: Morning, Sergeant. Just talking to Gene Patrick over at Highland Park.
- 2:06Speaker 4: You know him?
- 2:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I met him a couple of times.
- 2:08Speaker 9: Picked up a youngster a couple of days ago on
- 2:10Speaker 9: suspicion of burglary. Brought him into the office and Patrick
- 2:12Speaker 9: talked to him.
- 2:12Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 9: Well, he finally bought it, but the kid didn't have
- 2:14Speaker 9: anything to do with it, so he told him to
- 2:16Speaker 9: go home.
- 2:16Speaker 7: Uh-huh.
- 2:17Speaker 9: Kid told Gene he didn't have the money to get home,
- 2:18Speaker 9: so Gene gave him 20 cents. Kid swore he'd come
- 2:20Speaker 9: in and pay it back.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Did he?
- 2:22Speaker 6: Yeah, he came in this morning, gave Patrick two dimes.
- 2:24Speaker 6: Told him thanks for believing the story.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 2:27Speaker 6: Then Patrick got the kicker. Kid really did break into
- 2:29Speaker 6: a house last night to get the money.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Well, what's Patrick got to say about that?
- 2:33Speaker 6: Says the kid's honest in a sort of way. He
- 2:34Speaker 6: did pay him back.
- 2:35Speaker 8: Well, where's the youngster now?
- 2:36Speaker 6: Got him over at Highland Park Juvenile.
- 2:38Speaker 8: I better call, Gene. Maybe I can give him a hand.
- 2:40Speaker 8: I got a couple of streetcar tokens I won't be using.
- 2:42Speaker 8: Might like to have them.
- 2:43Speaker 10: Oh, Holden, if I was you, I don't think I'd
- 2:44Speaker 10: bring it up to him for a couple of days.
- 2:46Speaker 6: Well, what can I do for you two?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Well, Lindsey, we've been working on a string of burglaries.
- 2:49Speaker 3: You maybe got the word on them.
- 2:51Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 2:51Speaker 6: What's the story?
- 2:52Speaker 3: Bunch of store burglaries. Papers have tagged them. The milk
- 2:54Speaker 3: bottle jobs.
- 2:55Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 2:56Speaker 9: Seems Hartgrove was telling me something about them the other day.
- 2:59Speaker 6: Where'd we come in?
- 2:59Speaker 7: Well, the way the jobs look, we've been thinking they
- 3:01Speaker 7: maybe belong in your department instead of ours.
- 3:03Speaker 6: How do you figure that?
- 3:04Speaker 8: First off, the milk thing.
- 3:06Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 3:06Speaker 7: Every job he's pulled, we found an empty milk bottle
- 3:08Speaker 7: on the counter.
- 3:09Speaker 6: Okay, what's that prove?
- 3:10Speaker 3: Well, milk and.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Kids go together. Sure, so do milk and ulcers. Maybe
- 3:14Speaker 6: your thief's got the bull horrors when he gets into
- 3:16Speaker 6: the store.
- 3:16Speaker 5: No, Lindsey, there's another thing. The way he prowls the places.
- 3:19Speaker 5: All he takes is petty cash. Just a couple of
- 3:20Speaker 5: bucks outside. Candy, cigarettes, nothing big. Some of the places
- 3:24Speaker 5: he's gone into, you could open the safe with a
- 3:25Speaker 5: pocket knife. And he hasn't even made a move toward them.
- 3:27Speaker 6: Maybe he's a kleptomaniac.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Got a lot of them on the books.
- 3:29Speaker 6: Maybe that's the way he gets his kicks.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Oh, that's a nice try, Lindsey.
- 3:32Speaker 5: If you know anybody that can climb through a 14
- 3:34Speaker 5: by 10 inch hole, you trot them up and we'll
- 3:35Speaker 5: talk to them.
- 3:36Speaker 9: Okay, I haven't got the names on my desk, but
- 3:38Speaker 9: you take a trip to Santa Anita, you'll meet a
- 3:39Speaker 9: lot of them.
- 3:40Speaker 6: Jockeys. You guys know we'll go along.
- 3:42Speaker 4: With you on this thing.
- 3:42Speaker 9: Anything we can do, but until we're sure that there's
- 3:44Speaker 9: a juvenile involved, there's nothing we can do.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Anything turns up, we'll be sure to turn it over
- 3:48Speaker 4: to you.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Now, look, we're not trying to palm this thing off
- 3:50Speaker 3: on you, Lindsey.
- 3:50Speaker 5: We've had the stats office make so many runs on
- 3:52Speaker 5: small adults that the cards are wearing out.
- 3:54Speaker 3: It just seems that none of the leads we've been
- 3:55Speaker 3: chasing come out anywhere. We figured that maybe you could
- 3:57Speaker 3: come up with some answers for us.
- 3:58Speaker 6: Well, that's a new one on me, Joe, this milk bit.
- 4:01Speaker 9: I've heard of a couple of thieves that went for it,
- 4:02Speaker 9: but I can't name you a juvenile offhand. I'll pass
- 4:05Speaker 9: the word around to the day watch, see what they
- 4:06Speaker 9: can come up with. I'll leave a note for Hartgrove.
- 4:08Speaker 9: He can pass it on to the night watch.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Well, I appreciate anything you can do.
- 4:11Speaker 4: No trouble.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Been running your ragged on this, huh? Pretty rough.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Just that we can't seem to be able to come
- 4:15Speaker 3: up with anything today.
- 4:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Oh, excuse me.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Georgia Street, Joe. Sergeant Simmons.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:22Speaker 6: Yeah, they're here.
- 4:23Speaker 9: Which one?
- 4:25Speaker 6: Okay, hang on. For you, Joe, your office.
- 4:27Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Friday talking.
- 4:32Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Right away. What's the address?
- 4:34Speaker 8: Uh-huh.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, I got it. We'll leave right away.
- 4:38Speaker 8: Who? Yeah, call him. Thanks.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Well, come on, let's go. The milk bottle kid, he
- 4:43Speaker 5: hit again. The call had come from Lieutenant Ginder in burglary.
- 4:50Speaker 5: He told us that he'd just gotten a call from
- 4:52Speaker 5: a storekeeper named Marty Darabertus. The man had called to
- 4:54Speaker 5: report a burglary at his store at the corner of
- 4:56Speaker 5: Jackson and Broadway Streets. Lieutenant Ginder told us that the
- 4:59Speaker 5: crime lab had been notified and had dispatched a crew
- 5:01Speaker 5: to investigate the premises for physical evidence. Frank and I
- 5:05Speaker 5: left Georgia Street Juvenile and we drove over to Figueroa.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Then we turned over onto Broadway. The store that had
- 5:09Speaker 5: been broken into was a small Italian delicatessen on the
- 5:12Speaker 5: southeast corner. By the time we got there, the crime
- 5:14Speaker 5: lab crew had already arrived and was winding up their investigation.
- 5:17Speaker 5: We walked into the place and we met with Ray Tinker.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Hi, Joe.
- 5:23Speaker 11: Frank.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Ray. Hi, Ray.
- 5:24Speaker 6: How's it going? Usual thing.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Bottle of milk on the counter. You want to check
- 5:27Speaker 4: it over?
- 5:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Come on back here. Chief made his entrance back here
- 5:32Speaker 4: at the rear of the store.
- 5:34Speaker 3: There it is.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Broke out the window pane.
- 5:36Speaker 8: Yeah, not very big, huh?
- 5:38Speaker 4: Measures nine and a half to twelve and three quarters.
- 5:40Speaker 3: No alarm on the window, huh?
- 5:42Speaker 4: Yeah, you can see the wires here. Take a look.
- 5:44Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 3: How come the alarm didn't go off?
- 5:47Speaker 10: I talked to the owner. He said he's had trouble
- 5:49Speaker 10: with the alarm system the last couple of weeks. Called
- 5:50Speaker 10: the company and asked them to fix it.
- 5:52Speaker 4: He thought it was okay. Guess there's something wrong someplace.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Didn't work last night.
- 5:56Speaker 6: What kind of alarm was it, Ray? I'll try it.
- 5:58Speaker 4: On the building. You know the kind. Yeah. What'd he
- 6:00Speaker 4: take this time, Ray? Usual round of stuff.
- 6:02Speaker 10: According to the owner, there are about four cartons of
- 6:04Speaker 10: cigarettes missing, several boxes of candy. Can't be absolutely sure.
- 6:07Speaker 10: So he's got a check he's stocked. Be better if
- 6:09Speaker 10: you talk to him on that.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, we will.
- 6:10Speaker 4: We'll catch him later. Want to wait a minute?
- 6:12Speaker 10: I'll check and see how the boys are doing on
- 6:14Speaker 10: the prints. Have them check the counter and the milk bottle.
- 6:16Speaker 8: All right.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Thanks, Ray. Be right back.
- 6:17Speaker 8: All right.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I wonder when we're going to blow the whistle on
- 6:20Speaker 3: this guy.
- 6:21Speaker 8: I don't know. Can't do it fast enough for me. Well,
- 6:22Speaker 8: then what do you know?
- 6:25Speaker 6: Hey, Joe. Look at this.
- 6:28Speaker 8: You know, I'd like to get a couple of those
- 6:29Speaker 8: before we leave. What are you talking about?
- 6:31Speaker 6: Salami, Joe.
- 6:32Speaker 8: Those right there, the hard Italian kind.
- 6:34Speaker 6: See, right there?
- 6:35Speaker 7: I remember last summer I was up in San Francisco.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember.
- 6:38Speaker 7: Went up there to pick up a prisoner. Remember, you
- 6:39Speaker 7: were collecting days off.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I recall. I had a hundred of them coming.
- 6:43Speaker 8: Yeah, pretty funny.
- 6:45Speaker 7: Anyway, I met Dan Shelley up there. You mean the
- 6:47Speaker 7: Irish tenor? Yeah, he and I went down to Cookie's
- 6:49Speaker 7: bar for lunch. Cookie had some of this salami. Sliced
- 6:52Speaker 7: it like paper. You could almost read through it. That's
- 6:54Speaker 7: the way it's supposed to be.
- 6:55Speaker 8: I know, Joe.
- 6:56Speaker 7: Anyway, Cookie sliced up a bunch of it, served it
- 6:58Speaker 7: with cold cracked crab.
- 6:59Speaker 8: Boy, I never tasted anything so good in my life.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Don't you ever read the newspaper through sliced salami?
- 7:04Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 7:05Speaker 8: Well, I never have.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Have you?
- 7:07Speaker 6: All the time.
- 7:07Speaker 8: Just the funnies. Well, anyway, Faye's tried to find them
- 7:10Speaker 8: for me. Salami like this.
- 7:11Speaker 6: Brought home all.
- 7:12Speaker 7: Kind of things, but she's never found the right kind.
- 7:15Speaker 7: You know, they'd be hard enough to pound tax with them.
- 7:17Speaker 8: She got them, though. Boy, never forget old Cookie and
- 7:20Speaker 8: that spread.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Well, if you can get your mind off food for
- 7:23Speaker 5: a minute, and I know that'll be tough, let's get
- 7:25Speaker 5: on with this thing, Joe. Sure got to buy some
- 7:27Speaker 5: of these before we leave.
- 7:28Speaker 8: Just like Cookie had.
- 7:30Speaker 7: Just finished with powder, Joe.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Nothing.
- 7:34Speaker 10: Whoever it was drank the milk. He took the bottle
- 7:36Speaker 10: out of the refrigeration compartment. The bottle's sweated, and there
- 7:38Speaker 10: isn't a print on it.
- 7:38Speaker 4: We can lift.
- 7:39Speaker 8: Too bad.
- 7:40Speaker 6: None of them anyplace, huh?
- 7:41Speaker 4: No, we've gone over the place from top to bottom.
- 7:43Speaker 4: So there we can't find them.
- 7:45Speaker 6: That's not much help, is it?
- 7:46Speaker 4: Came up with one thing. Maybe you can make something
- 7:48Speaker 4: out of it.
- 7:48Speaker 6: What's that?
- 7:50Speaker 10: Outside the window in the back parking lot. Came up
- 7:52Speaker 10: with an open package of cigarettes. Don't know if it
- 7:54Speaker 10: belonged to the thief.
- 7:54Speaker 8: Anything on it?
- 7:55Speaker 6: No.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Fog last night ruined any prints that were on it.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Boys have got it if you want it.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Well, we'll take a look at it. Looks like everything's
- 8:02Speaker 3: against us, huh? Another blank.
- 8:04Speaker 10: Don't envy you guys trying to break this one. Most
- 8:06Speaker 10: of the time there's a leak someplace. Somewhere along the
- 8:08Speaker 10: line the guy's going to make a mistake and not
- 8:09Speaker 10: cover something.
- 8:10Speaker 6: Yeah, we've been saying that for weeks.
- 8:12Speaker 10: This is either the smartest thief I've ever seen or
- 8:14Speaker 10: the luckiest. What's his make for him?
- 8:16Speaker 3: Number 19.
- 8:16Speaker 10: A lot of chances to take for nothing.
- 8:19Speaker 4: He's not getting anything out of the jobs.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Maybe he isn't, but we are.
- 8:23Speaker 8: What?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Headaches. 9.38 a.m. We talked to the victim. He told
- 8:31Speaker 3: us that as near as he could figure, there was
- 8:32Speaker 3: approximately $ 4 stolen from the store.
- 8:34Speaker 5: He went on to say that he'd ascertained that five
- 8:36Speaker 5: cartons of cigarettes and several boxes of candy bars were taken.
- 8:40Speaker 5: He was unable to tell us if any other merchandise
- 8:42Speaker 5: was taken until he'd.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Made a complete inventory.
- 8:44Speaker 5: He went on to tell us that there was over
- 8:46Speaker 5: $ 600 in the safe, but that as far as he
- 8:47Speaker 5: could tell, there'd been no attempt to break into it.
- 8:50Speaker 5: We made a canvas of the neighborhood and talked to
- 8:52Speaker 5: the neighbors. None of them recalled having seen any suspicious people.
- 8:55Speaker 3: In the neighborhood the night before. None of them.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Had seen any suspicious automobiles in the area. The one
- 9:00Speaker 5: thing that was apparent was that the thief was working
- 9:01Speaker 5: in a definite pattern. He worked only on Friday and
- 9:04Speaker 5: Saturday nights, always between 8 p.m.
- 9:06Speaker 3: And 12 midnight.
- 9:08Speaker 5: Frank and I met with Captain Bernard, and it was
- 9:10Speaker 5: decided that we would maintain a rolling stakeout in the
- 9:12Speaker 5: area in which the suspect operated.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Four other cars from Metro Reserves were assigned.
- 9:16Speaker 6: To work with us.
- 9:16Speaker 5: For the next five nights, we worked without results. It
- 9:20Speaker 5: was slow and tedious, but considering the lack of information
- 9:22Speaker 5: on the thief, it was the only way we had left.
- 9:25Speaker 5: We had to be on or near the scene when
- 9:27Speaker 5: the thief struck again. Saturday night, December 19th. Frank and
- 9:30Speaker 5: I met and drove out to the area. The streets
- 9:32Speaker 5: were crowded with early Christmas shoppers.
- 9:35Speaker 6: I'll sure be glad when it's over.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Why?
- 9:36Speaker 6: What's the matter? How many rooms in your apartment, Joe?
- 9:40Speaker 12: Three.
- 9:40Speaker 3: You know that. You've been there.
- 9:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 8: There won't be enough room. What are you talking about?
- 9:45Speaker 6: Faye. What's Faye got to do with this?
- 9:48Speaker 11: Hack, Joe.
- 9:48Speaker 6: Real hack.
- 9:49Speaker 8: Why?
- 9:49Speaker 6: What's the matter? I got up this morning. I felt great.
- 9:52Speaker 6: Faye's got breakfast on the table. All nice.
- 9:54Speaker 8: Couple eggs. Little pig sausages. Nice, you know.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 8: I come down to the table.
- 9:59Speaker 6: She's got the food on.
- 10:01Speaker 8: And I hit her with it.
- 10:02Speaker 3: What, the food?
- 10:04Speaker 6: No, Joe.
- 10:04Speaker 8: I hit her with what I'm about to tell her.
- 10:05Speaker 8: I tell her I'm going to have to work tonight.
- 10:08Speaker 6: You work every night this week. What's wrong with that?
- 10:10Speaker 8: That's the way I figure it, so I got a
- 10:12Speaker 8: way out. You have, huh?
- 10:14Speaker 7: Today is Faye's birthday.
- 10:16Speaker 6: You didn't tell me. It's not good to tell people, Joe. Oh,
- 10:19Speaker 6: it isn't.
- 10:20Speaker 3: No.
- 10:20Speaker 6: Faye's over 30.
- 10:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:25Speaker 8: I kind of figured that. Don't you get it?
- 10:29Speaker 4: I'm sorry, pal.
- 10:30Speaker 3: You left me a couple of blocks back on this one.
- 10:32Speaker 6: Look, Faye... I may never catch up. Faye's over 30, Joe.
- 10:35Speaker 7: She's getting to the point where she's taken off years, see?
- 10:38Speaker 7: How can you give a person a last birthday present? Yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 3: I tell you about it.
- 10:44Speaker 8: You're going to give her a present. Only now instead
- 10:46Speaker 8: of 30, she's 29.
- 10:46Speaker 6: You understand?
- 10:47Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Well, to be perfectly honest with you, no. But as
- 10:51Speaker 3: long as you do, it's perfectly.
- 10:53Speaker 6: All right with me.
- 10:54Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 10:55Speaker 3: What about this morning?
- 10:57Speaker 7: Well, I told her I was going to have to
- 10:58Speaker 7: go to work. I got this present for her. Brand
- 11:00Speaker 7: new deep fat fryer.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Real good.
- 11:03Speaker 8: All wrapped up.
- 11:03Speaker 6: Deep fat fryer. All wrapped up with ribbon. Beautiful.
- 11:06Speaker 8: Shiny.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Beautiful.
- 11:08Speaker 6: So you gave it to her. Did it do any good?
- 11:10Speaker 7: Not a pound.
- 11:11Speaker 6: You know what she does with it?
- 11:12Speaker 3: Well, at this point, I wouldn't even want to guess.
- 11:15Speaker 4: I'm serious, Joe.
- 11:16Speaker 6: This may mean the end of my home.
- 11:18Speaker 8: Go ahead.
- 11:19Speaker 6: She doesn't even open it.
- 11:20Speaker 7: Just puts it in the closet on the back porch.
- 11:23Speaker 7: Doesn't even pull the paper apart to peek at what's
- 11:25Speaker 7: in it.
- 11:26Speaker 6: Real mad, Joe.
- 11:27Speaker 8: She may not let me back in the house tonight.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Well, you can apologize when you get home.
- 11:31Speaker 6: I don't know, Joe. Face pretty sore. Didn't even open
- 11:33Speaker 6: the present.
- 11:33Speaker 8: Wait a minute. I'm going to peek, huh? Listen.
- 11:36Speaker 6: Yeah, tell where it's coming from? Yeah, sounds like up
- 11:38Speaker 6: on 7th. Come on.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Yeah, right here.
- 11:44Speaker 8: Pull up.
- 11:47Speaker 6: I'll take the front. All right. Hey, hold it up there.
- 11:49Speaker 8: Police officers, stop or I'll shoot. Frank, he's coming around
- 11:52Speaker 8: your way.
- 11:53Speaker 6: Okay. Take it easy.
- 11:54Speaker 8: Go ahead and shoot.
- 11:54Speaker 6: Come on and kill me. Go ahead and shoot me.
- 11:56Speaker 6: It doesn't matter anymore. Everything all right?
- 11:59Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Just a kid, Joe.
- 12:01Speaker 12: Oh, sweet.
- 12:01Speaker 6: What are you doing in the store, son?
- 12:15Speaker 12: What do you think I'm doing?
- 12:16Speaker 3: He asked you a question, son.
- 12:18Speaker 12: Pretty stupid. What do you think I was doing?
- 12:20Speaker 8: How many tours you broken into, son?
- 12:22Speaker 12: Figure it out for yourself.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Look, what do you got a chip on your shoulder for?
- 12:25Speaker 12: You're big guys. Don't give me a lot of conversation.
- 12:28Speaker 12: Do what you want to do.
- 12:29Speaker 6: All right, boy, you call it. Come on. 11.50 p.m.
- 12:37Speaker 5: We called the office and told them that we had
- 12:38Speaker 5: a subject in custody and that we were taking him
- 12:40Speaker 5: to Georgia Street Juvenile Bureau. We put the boy in
- 12:42Speaker 5: our car and we waited until a radio car arrived.
- 12:45Speaker 5: We asked the officer to notify the owner of the
- 12:47Speaker 5: store and stand by until he got there. We also
- 12:49Speaker 5: asked if they'd make a 459 report. 11.55 p.m.
- 12:53Speaker 3: He started to take the youngster to the juvenile bureau.
- 12:57Speaker 3: What's your name, son?
- 12:58Speaker 12: What difference does it make?
- 12:59Speaker 8: Acting like that isn't going to help you.
- 13:00Speaker 12: You guys picked me up, remember? You worry about it.
- 13:03Speaker 12: I got nothing to be afraid of.
- 13:04Speaker 6: Oh, yes, you have, boy. You could have been shot
- 13:06Speaker 6: back there.
- 13:06Speaker 12: Maybe you should have pulled the trigger.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Look, son, what's the matter with you? Why are you
- 13:10Speaker 5: acting like this? You just got real lucky back there.
- 13:13Speaker 5: That's the only reason you're alive now. It was dark
- 13:15Speaker 5: in there. As far as I could tell, you were
- 13:16Speaker 5: an adult. You didn't stop when I told you to. Now,
- 13:18Speaker 5: according to the book, I could have shot you.
- 13:19Speaker 3: You know that, don't you?
- 13:20Speaker 12: You're only a kid. Better make you a big man.
- 13:22Speaker 6: No, I'm just bringing it up to prove a point.
- 13:23Speaker 12: Say it.
- 13:24Speaker 8: Now, look, son.
- 13:25Speaker 5: I'm going to tell you something. When you break into
- 13:27Speaker 5: a place at night, you're not a kid anymore. You're
- 13:29Speaker 5: asking for trouble. You've got both your pockets full of it.
- 13:31Speaker 5: The way you work tonight makes us think you're mixed.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Up in a lot more theft than just tonight.
- 13:34Speaker 12: Is that right?
- 13:35Speaker 6: You ever been arrested before? No.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Never been in trouble with the law, huh? Sure.
- 13:39Speaker 12: I'm a real criminal. I got a ticket once for
- 13:41Speaker 12: riding my bike through a boulevard stop. Radio car stopped.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Me and tagged me.
- 13:45Speaker 12: Big deal. But they're going to send me to San Quentin.
- 13:48Speaker 12: Maybe you can give me the gas change.
- 13:51Speaker 3: How old are you?
- 13:52Speaker 12: What difference does that make?
- 13:53Speaker 8: How old are you?
- 13:54Speaker 12: You figure.
- 13:55Speaker 8: All right.
- 13:56Speaker 3: You look like you're about 11 to me.
- 13:57Speaker 12: That's what everybody thinks. I'll be 15 my next birthday.
- 14:00Speaker 6: Don't kid us, son. It's the truth. Fifteen.
- 14:02Speaker 12: That's what I'll be.
- 14:02Speaker 6: Fifteen.
- 14:03Speaker 3: When were you born?
- 14:03Speaker 12: 1939, November 2nd.
- 14:05Speaker 6: You're small for your age, aren't you?
- 14:07Speaker 12: Why do you say that?
- 14:08Speaker 6: Aren't you?
- 14:08Speaker 12: It's got nothing to do with it. Nothing at all.
- 14:11Speaker 12: I can do anything any other kid can do. Anything.
- 14:13Speaker 12: Don't you forget that.
- 14:14Speaker 3: What's the matter with you? Is that a sore point
- 14:16Speaker 3: with you?
- 14:17Speaker 6: Huh?
- 14:17Speaker 3: Your size. Is that a sore point?
- 14:19Speaker 12: Nothing wrong with my size. Doctor says that I'm all right.
- 14:22Speaker 12: Just that some people aren't meant to be as big
- 14:24Speaker 12: as others.
- 14:24Speaker 6: That's all.
- 14:25Speaker 12: There's nothing wrong with me.
- 14:26Speaker 6: Now, now, come on, son.
- 14:27Speaker 3: What's your name? Now, look, you know we're going to
- 14:30Speaker 3: find out.
- 14:32Speaker 12: How are you going to find out?
- 14:33Speaker 6: We will.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Now, why don't you save us all a lot of
- 14:35Speaker 3: time and tell us the truth here?
- 14:38Speaker 8: It'd be better if you did.
- 14:38Speaker 12: If I do tell you. You going to put it
- 14:42Speaker 12: in the papers?
- 14:43Speaker 6: What?
- 14:44Speaker 9: I'll tell you.
- 14:45Speaker 12: There's going to be a lot of reporters around. My
- 14:47Speaker 12: name going to get in the papers?
- 14:48Speaker 8: Not from us.
- 14:49Speaker 12: Can't tell you then.
- 14:50Speaker 5: You mean if there's no reporters around, you aren't going
- 14:52Speaker 5: to tell us your name?
- 14:53Speaker 6: Is that it?
- 14:53Speaker 12: That's the way it is.
- 14:55Speaker 3: It's kind of funny, isn't it?
- 14:57Speaker 12: Maybe that's the way it looks to you.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Where do you live?
- 15:00Speaker 12: Can't tell you that either.
- 15:02Speaker 5: You've got things all wrong, son. It isn't what you
- 15:05Speaker 5: want to tell us. That's got nothing to do with this.
- 15:07Speaker 5: You're going to tell us what we want to know
- 15:08Speaker 5: sooner or later.
- 15:09Speaker 6: Where are we going?
- 15:10Speaker 3: Georgia Street.
- 15:11Speaker 12: That's where the jail is.
- 15:12Speaker 6: Why do you ask that?
- 15:13Speaker 12: Because I want to know.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a jail there.
- 15:16Speaker 12: Reporters?
- 15:16Speaker 3: What?
- 15:17Speaker 12: There's going to be reporters there.
- 15:17Speaker 3: What is this thing with reporters in you? What's this
- 15:19Speaker 3: all about?
- 15:20Speaker 12: Reporters put your name in the papers, don't they?
- 15:22Speaker 8: Sometimes.
- 15:23Speaker 12: Well, you get the reporters all lined up. You get
- 15:25Speaker 12: them from all the papers. You have them there and
- 15:27Speaker 12: I'll tell you all about it.
- 15:28Speaker 6: The whole story.
- 15:29Speaker 12: You just get the reporters and the photographers. Be sure
- 15:32Speaker 12: about them, because I want some pictures, too.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Well, look, let me get this straight.
- 15:36Speaker 12: What?
- 15:37Speaker 5: You say you aren't going to give us any information
- 15:38Speaker 5: without the press being there.
- 15:39Speaker 8: Is that right?
- 15:40Speaker 12: That's the way it's going to be.
- 15:41Speaker 6: Well, you got it wrong, boy.
- 15:42Speaker 3: What? Doesn't make any difference who's there. You're going to
- 15:44Speaker 3: come around.
- 15:45Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 3: We'll find out.
- 15:46Speaker 8: The End.
- 15:56Speaker 11: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 15:59Speaker 11: police force in action.
- 16:00Speaker 5: 12.10 a.m. We got to Georgia Street Juvenile Bureau. Frank
- 16:12Speaker 5: pulled the car into the side alley and we took
- 16:14Speaker 5: the subject out of the back seat.
- 16:16Speaker 6: Up this way, son.
- 16:18Speaker 12: It's a seedy looking place.
- 16:19Speaker 6: Yeah, well, it's been here a long time.
- 16:20Speaker 12: Looks like a set out of a picture.
- 16:22Speaker 6: Don't you worry about it, huh?
- 16:25Speaker 3: You want to take him down the hall, Frank?
- 16:26Speaker 6: I'll check with Hargrove. Yeah.
- 16:27Speaker 8: Come on, bud.
- 16:32Speaker 6: Hiya, Friday. Working kind of late, aren't you? Yeah, we are.
- 16:35Speaker 4: I got the note from Simmons on the milk burglaries.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Checked around the nightwise. Nothing on it, so I didn't
- 16:39Speaker 4: call you.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I don't think you have to worry about it. I
- 16:41Speaker 3: think we got the answer. Yeah?
- 16:42Speaker 6: We just picked up a kid. We got him dead
- 16:44Speaker 6: to rights in the market.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Opened a bottle of milk right next to the cash register.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Where is he now?
- 16:48Speaker 3: Frank's got him down the hall.
- 16:49Speaker 6: You think he's your boy?
- 16:50Speaker 5: Yeah, looks like it. Everything he had, Zeph. The entrance,
- 16:52Speaker 5: what he tried to take, the milk. All along, seems
- 16:55Speaker 5: to fit.
- 16:55Speaker 6: You got that kind of a case, what are you
- 16:57Speaker 6: worrying about? There's two things. Yeah? Who he is and
- 17:00Speaker 6: why he did it.
- 17:00Speaker 4: He won't tell you? No.
- 17:01Speaker 3: He's got some big thing working about the press. Says
- 17:04Speaker 3: he won't give us anything without reporters being there.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Makes it rough, Joe.
- 17:07Speaker 8: You know the policy.
- 17:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I do.
- 17:08Speaker 3: He won't let us help him.
- 17:10Speaker 6: If he wants publicity, take me down.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Introduce me as a reporter.
- 17:12Speaker 3: I wouldn't mind doing it.
- 17:14Speaker 4: You won't do any harm to try.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 17:16Speaker 6: Go ahead. Thanks. Who am I going to be? Well,
- 17:23Speaker 6: tell him you're Sid Hughes from the mirror, huh? Yeah,
- 17:25Speaker 6: might as well be one of the good ones.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Son, you wanted to talk to somebody from the papers.
- 17:35Speaker 5: It's against the policy, but we swung it for you.
- 17:37Speaker 5: This is Sid Hughes from the mirror.
- 17:39Speaker 7: Hi.
- 17:39Speaker 12: You the fellow that held that guy on the phone
- 17:41Speaker 12: in Baltimore?
- 17:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Great.
- 17:43Speaker 12: I read all about it. You gonna write me up
- 17:45Speaker 12: like that?
- 17:46Speaker 6: I hope not, son.
- 17:47Speaker 4: There were two men killed in that operation.
- 17:48Speaker 12: I read all the stories. Everybody did. That's how I
- 17:51Speaker 12: mean for you to write me up. With a picture.
- 17:54Speaker 4: What makes you think you got it coming?
- 17:56Speaker 3: You break into one store and try to steal a
- 17:57Speaker 3: couple of cartons of cigarettes.
- 17:58Speaker 4: That doesn't make the first page.
- 18:00Speaker 6: One store?
- 18:01Speaker 12: I got into 19 of them. 19 before they caught me.
- 18:04Speaker 12: That's important, isn't it? That's a story.
- 18:06Speaker 6: I don't know. It might be.
- 18:07Speaker 3: A couple of things we better get straightened out here.
- 18:09Speaker 3: First off, what's your name?
- 18:11Speaker 12: Better get your notebook out. Be able to take all
- 18:13Speaker 12: this down.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Don't worry about it, son.
- 18:15Speaker 6: You just answer the questions. I'll get it. Yeah. Okay.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 18:18Speaker 12: My name's Elroy Graham. That's E-L-R-O-Y-G-R-A-H-A-M.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 6: How old are you?
- 18:26Speaker 12: I told you once. Almost 15.
- 18:28Speaker 3: You said you'd broke him into 19 stores.
- 18:29Speaker 8: Is that right?
- 18:30Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 18:31Speaker 6: 19.
- 18:32Speaker 12: Might have made him more, but something went wrong tonight.
- 18:34Speaker 12: Had trouble with the burglar alarm. Thought I'd turned it off.
- 18:37Speaker 12: Bad mistake. He's still working. It wasn't for that. Guess
- 18:41Speaker 12: it only takes one, though.
- 18:42Speaker 6: Huh, Mr.
- 18:42Speaker 10: Hughes?
- 18:42Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess so. You want to tell us why
- 18:44Speaker 6: you did it? What?
- 18:46Speaker 8: He had to have a reason for committing these robberies.
- 18:48Speaker 8: You want to tell us what it was?
- 18:49Speaker 12: Sure. Good reason. Real good.
- 18:51Speaker 8: All right, tell us.
- 18:54Speaker 12: Well, you see, I always had trouble at school. Never
- 18:56Speaker 12: seemed to quite make it. All the guys liked me.
- 18:58Speaker 6: They all did.
- 18:59Speaker 12: All the girls do, too. Got girls calling me almost
- 19:01Speaker 12: every night, asking me to take them to dances, stuff
- 19:03Speaker 12: like that. I don't go much for stuff like that.
- 19:06Speaker 12: You can understand, can't you, Mr. Hughes?
- 19:08Speaker 8: Go ahead, Elroy.
- 19:09Speaker 12: Well, they wanted me for all the teams, football, basketball.
- 19:13Speaker 12: All the time asking me to play. But I figure
- 19:15Speaker 12: if you want to get ahead in the world, you've
- 19:17Speaker 12: got to have a name. Someplace where you want to get.
- 19:20Speaker 12: Figure out that. Work for it, and you're going to
- 19:22Speaker 12: get there. Don't you find that true, Mr. Hughes? Go ahead.
- 19:26Speaker 12: That's the way it was with me. All the time,
- 19:28Speaker 12: turned down offers to be on some team. Telling some
- 19:30Speaker 12: girl that I couldn't take her to a dance. Just
- 19:32Speaker 12: didn't have the time. Somehow, I just couldn't make it.
- 19:35Speaker 12: You can understand it. You've been around. You know all
- 19:38Speaker 12: the successful kind of people. You write something, a lot
- 19:40Speaker 12: of people read it. You know what I mean. Don't you? Well,
- 19:46Speaker 12: what's the matter? Something wrong? I'm trying to tell you
- 19:50Speaker 12: what happened. I'm giving it to you straight. What's the matter?
- 19:55Speaker 3: Now, you want to tell us the truth, Elroy?
- 19:57Speaker 5: What?
- 19:57Speaker 3: I don't know why you're trying to sell us this line, boy.
- 19:59Speaker 3: It isn't necessary.
- 20:00Speaker 5: I don't know why you did what you did, but
- 20:01Speaker 5: I do know you had a reason for it. Now,
- 20:03Speaker 5: that's all we want to know, just the reason.
- 20:06Speaker 12: You don't believe me?
- 20:06Speaker 3: Afraid not.
- 20:08Speaker 12: How about you?
- 20:10Speaker 6: No, son, I don't.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Mr.
- 20:12Speaker 10: Hughes?
- 20:13Speaker 6: No.
- 20:15Speaker 12: Can't even lie right. Can't even tell a lie good.
- 20:18Speaker 12: All my life I've been trying to be like other kids.
- 20:22Speaker 12: All the time getting beat up, getting left out of things.
- 20:24Speaker 12: You know why?
- 20:25Speaker 6: Do you know?
- 20:26Speaker 3: Go ahead, son.
- 20:29Speaker 12: Big reason. Biggest reason in the world. Because I'm almost
- 20:35Speaker 12: 15 years old and I'm 4 feet 7 inches tall.
- 20:38Speaker 12: 4 feet 7 inches. Weight, 97 pounds. That ain't very big.
- 20:42Speaker 12: Not big enough. All the time, other kids shoving you around.
- 20:48Speaker 12: All the time, you're the joke. Gets to the time
- 20:52Speaker 12: when you figure it's easy to laugh, too. Because if
- 20:55Speaker 12: you don't, some kid's going to beat you up. Gets
- 20:57Speaker 12: to the point where you don't care anymore. I used
- 21:01Speaker 12: to clip out those coupons and send them in. Get
- 21:04Speaker 12: the books back on how to build myself up.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Worked at it.
- 21:07Speaker 12: Didn't do nothing for me. It was still four feet
- 21:10Speaker 12: seven and weighed 97 pounds. All the stuff I took
- 21:13Speaker 12: didn't do no good. Still came out four feet seven,
- 21:18Speaker 12: 97 pounds.
- 21:20Speaker 3: All right, so you want to tell us about the burglaries?
- 21:23Speaker 12: I did it to be big, that's why. I had
- 21:26Speaker 12: the things other people wanted, cigarettes, candy, the other things
- 21:29Speaker 12: kids wanted. I had all that stuff that the other
- 21:32Speaker 12: kids wanted. Made me important, don't you see that? You
- 21:37Speaker 12: gotta understand it, Mr.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Hughes.
- 21:40Speaker 12: That's why I wanted my picture in the paper. That's
- 21:42Speaker 12: why I wanted the story. So the kids would know
- 21:45Speaker 12: that I'd done something big.
- 21:47Speaker 8: So they'd know.
- 21:48Speaker 3: All right, son. It's gonna be all right here. No,
- 21:56Speaker 3: it isn't.
- 21:57Speaker 12: Like everything else I tried to do, I loused it up.
- 22:00Speaker 12: I didn't mean to steal, but it was the only
- 22:02Speaker 12: thing to do. The only way I had.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Now, wasn't there some other.
- 22:06Speaker 6: No.
- 22:07Speaker 12: No, there wasn't. All the time the other kids laughing.
- 22:10Speaker 12: All the time talking. I just couldn't stand it anymore.
- 22:14Speaker 6: I just couldn't.
- 22:18Speaker 8: Here you go.
- 22:19Speaker 12: Thanks. You can understand it, can't you? It makes sense.
- 22:26Speaker 8: What's that, son?
- 22:28Speaker 12: Wasn't so much the kids saying I was little.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:31Speaker 12: I didn't want them to think I was small.
- 22:32Speaker 5: 12.36 a.m., we contacted the parents of the Graham boy
- 22:43Speaker 5: and asked them to come down to the station.
- 22:45Speaker 3: We talked to them for an hour and tried to
- 22:46Speaker 3: fill them in.
- 22:47Speaker 5: In view of the fact that the parents of the
- 22:49Speaker 5: subject were responsible persons, the boy was booked for violation
- 22:52Speaker 5: of Section 459 PC, delinquent, and he was released to
- 22:55Speaker 5: his parents pending his hearing in juvenile court. Five days passed,
- 22:59Speaker 5: and we heard nothing from the boy. On December 24th,
- 23:01Speaker 5: Frank and I checked into the office.
- 23:04Speaker 6: Friday? Yeah, Earl. Kid in the back wants to see
- 23:07Speaker 6: you and Smith.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Okay, thank you.
- 23:13Speaker 12: Hi, Mr.
- 23:14Speaker 6: Friday.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Well, hello, Roy.
- 23:15Speaker 3: What can we do for you?
- 23:16Speaker 12: Well, I guess you think it's kind of funny.
- 23:19Speaker 8: What's that?
- 23:20Speaker 12: I want to tell you that I sure think it's
- 23:22Speaker 12: good what you did for me. Helped me with that
- 23:24Speaker 12: burglary thing the other night.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Well, it isn't over yet, son. The court still has
- 23:27Speaker 3: to make a decision on it.
