Get on your bikes and ride. Get on your bikes and ride!
• 0:10
[upbeat music] Well, after tonight there's only four more times- Three, two, one...
• 0:28
you can hear that. Contact. Show 321. Oh, yeah. 321 Contact. Right on. Contact is the... [singing] Final, final con-... Was it Final Contact? No, Final Countdown, the movie- Yeah...
• 0:40
with the Nimitz going through the thing. That was pretty cool. And a Kirk Douglas, I think. That could've been good. It's on Tubi probably. Oh, yeah. I don't know.
• 0:51
Tubi's got me a little bit because even though I don't necessarily like commercial stuff- Yeah... it's still- They have the KGB JFK assassination files hosted by Roger Moore.
• 1:02
It- they've got a- Even though the Warren Commission said that it was a lone assassin. I don't know what kind of- He has the big Os going and it's awesome... I don't know what kind of television you have,
• 1:13
uh, but I have an LG in the living room, and it, you know, so you can get the over-the-air television and- Yeah... and then you plug in your thing, and, uh, ours is an Apple TV, and that's what I almost always use.
• 1:25
But for some reason I was looking for, I think, a baseball... I think I was looking for, I don't know, some game or something, and I'd, I'd never noticed before that they have all these IP TV stations.
• 1:38
And I don't think- Mm-hmm... they used to have that, and there's like- Yeah... several hundred of them. Oh, yeah. Yeah. E- like, a Samsung will have their own streaming platform. Yeah. Yeah.
• 1:46
Well, I guess I never- Roku has their own. Blah, blah, blah... I might have to get rid of my $40 a month Apple subscription e- even though I use other stuff. Nah, I don't know. Eh.
• 1:55
I'm kinda, I'm kinda- You take it away and then you get back and go like- I'm kinda locked into the-... "Oh, that means there's a new Apple ID number. Oh." Yeah. Well, they're launching a...
• 2:03
They just introduced the new iPhone 17, I believe. Oh, all seven versions of it? I think there's only one version to buy. There's is four. One. Four. There's one. Four. There's one. Four.
• 2:13
The only one to buy is the [laughs] iPhone 17 Pro- [laughs]... at least for me. Well, they have, ooh, I'm sorry, sub yadda yaddas. The five. Yeah. Well, the only reason why would- It has a larger screen and has- Right...
• 2:24
thicker Gorilla Glass glue. Gorilla Glue. [laughs] Whatever the hell. The only thing, the only thing I ever upgrade for, and this is a couple years old now, is the camera capabilities and the video and- Sure...
• 2:37
that is something that- Yeah. I mean, the shit you, you-... has become-... take it with, with your photoing- Yeah, you wanna go-... as opposed to- The potato phone? Whatever potato phone.
• 2:46
Oh, but see, I g- I do that, it turns the light on. I do that, it turns the light on. Oh. I think I have to tap three times on the s- uh, I don't know.
• 2:54
I had it set up so you could just tap on the back of the- Well, I found that out by kind of accident. [laughs] I- And then, then I looked into it- No idea on my phone... and I was like, "Oh, shit. Okay." Yeah.
• 3:01
I don't even use this for phone calls. I'm not sure wh- it's just a computer in my pocket. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm. The age of wonder. So we were on that, uh, the full moon beach ride redux. Yes.
• 3:13
I'm still blowing sand out of the vehicle. I had a lot more sand than I thought i- in there. I... Okay.
• 3:20
So one of the things I did before the ride was, 'cause I had to set up the Northpaw for Kate to borrow, and I wanted to make sure my bike was set up, is totally cleaned the drivetrains and used Squirt, it's a lube, wax-based.
• 3:37
When I got back, there's almost no sand on the drivetrains. I'm like, "This is awesome." Mm. I mean, there's sand everywhere else, but- Mm-hmm...
• 3:44
the fact that it isn't gummed up and sticking to the chain just ma- I mean, I knew this before.
• 3:50
I haven't been riding on the beach much, 'cause we haven't had beach riding, so I'm using, you know, uh, Rock 'n Roll Lube or something that's got a little bit of an oil base, and this is way better, 'cause cleanup was, like,
• 4:01
minutes. I think maybe bouncing it... It, the problem was putting it in the vehicle wet. Yeah. Yeah. And then you just kinda bump something and it all goes onto the- Oh... onto the floor. Yes. All the s- Oh, oh...
• 4:14
all the dried sand goes down on the floor. Yeah. The little contraption I had with the bungee, and it kinda went leany- Yeah... and it just kind of went, it just kept bouncing like this. Oh, yeah.
• 4:23
Yoink, yoink, yoink, yoink, yoink, yoink. So it was kinda knocking all the sand off of the rig- I could see that... uh, the entire time, so. What the... What? What? Why are we tippy angly here? What's going on?
• 4:34
That's- The world is going on axis. I was almost ready to fall down. And on ride- That was great... I brought of this, the Sky High Ride, which I picked up outside of Devil's Lake.
• 4:42
I don't think I had any of that on the ride. No, you just, you went, "Oh, no, thank you." What, what about now? It's distilled and bottled. What about now? [laughs] I didn't realize this until today.
• 4:52
W- uh, Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, the one that makes, like, those little bottles [laughs] that you always see at, like, Uppertone or whatever.
• 5:00
Well, what I w- But it's, it's whiskey, rye whiskey with apple cider. Now- All right... essentially trying, I mean, almost, it scarily looks like a Fireball. Yeah. But it is not. Good. It, it's not the cinnamony.
• 5:13
It's got a little apple taste going on in there. Have, have you had the Jagermeister Orange yet? Mm-mm. It is- There's no need for the things that name...
• 5:19
it is so much better than regular Jagermeister, it's unbelievable. This is just like whiskey and then an apple cider cocktail. I think I would've said no to you. [sighs] Straight rye whiskey. Yeah.
• 5:34
There's, like, no messing around. Oh, yeah, it's pretty good. Yeah. It's like- I don't know why I would've said no. Maybe 'cause I would still had miles and miles before the end of the day to ride. Could've been.
• 5:47
And, uh, and yes, everyone was like, "No, don't triple T it," even though I did, uh, get a little, caught in a little rock run into the lake, where I just kept going. Oh, yeah. I'm like, I'm like, "I'm going in."
• 6:01
I'm like... I'm like- Yeah... "Okay, I gotta put a foot down just to get me back to shore." Well, yeah. Once you go over that little edge, then you're like [snores] Yeah. And it's like, oh ho, oh ho, oh ho, oh ho.
• 6:10
But- I, I'm glad you were able to- Yeah... pull it back because- And I only-... that, that-... yeah... that's easy- I only got wet from knee down... that's- And that was my, my plan, and I stayed that way.
• 6:19
That's easy to get sucked out, too. Yes. Yeah. And then you tip over, and then you're entirely wet. So, on this particular ride, I was surprised, actually, that we... So we made it...
• 6:31
This was much less water than the Triple T. I kept waiting for, like, currents to come through, but- Yeah... and then I thought about it towards the end, going like, "No, this is a completely different event." Yeah.
• 6:42
But we made it, um, significantly past where we did last time, and I looked at the map, and I think maybe Friday, maybe Sunday, although after Strummer Fest, I'm not sure how Sunday will feel.
• 6:54
[laughs] But coming the other way from Harrington Beach State Park- Okay...
• 7:01
which, in the past, we've done a race from Port Washington to Harrington Beach and then back, and it's like nine miles, and I, we were, like, basically halfway there. Oh, that's good. Oh.
• 7:11
So for those strong cycling types, maybe doing a quick race up there and back would be kind of fun. I think, uh, Macce won it the year we did it, and it was like he did it in under an hour or something. [laughs] Yeah.
• 7:23
It was just, like, crazy fast. Oh, no. On the beach, on a fat bike, you know, whatever, whatever. But, uh, be that as it may,
• 7:33
we didn't do that yet, and I haven't determined whether it's completely open all the way there yet. So- Yeah, that's right... I have to- Well, yeah, I, I looked back at my, uh, my timeline [laughs] just to see what...
• 7:45
Uh, the, the thing of anything with a mapping system, I guess unless you, like, really pay for something laser-focused on you with the satellites and- Yeah... Sky Links and whatever. Like the old Facebook Go- [laughs]...
• 7:56
which was so awesome, or Move, or what was it called? Moves. That was good. Moves, yeah. Why'd that go away? E- e- even when it kinda, like, flickered out, it was good enough.
• 8:05
And normally, that's what, uh, Google Timeline is on Google Maps, except for, [laughs] except for, uh, uh, Saturday night's ride.
• 8:17
So it, it, it goes from point to point and back of cycling, but the count is 42 miles. Ooh. I was like- Oh, boy, we put in some good miles there... I was like, I was like, hell. Hell, hell, hell. All right.
• 8:30
I'm all right with 42. Yeah. It was- For, for- [laughs] I'm like- For what was an eight-and-a-half-mile ride or whatever, [laughs] sure. Yeah, it was, like, two...
• 8:36
I think it said, like, two, two and a half hours, and, like, 42 miles. I'm like, [whooshes] right on. So we, we had some seasoned, uh, seasoned beach riders, and one first-time rider. Yeah. Long-time listener. And yeah.
• 8:49
I, she w- she was distancing us at the end of it. I'm like, "You go, girl." Yeah, that's when I turned my light off. [laughs] I was like, I'm like, "Hey," I, I, I'm like, "Hey, it's by the light of the silvery moon."
• 9:01
But yeah, I can't keep up. [laughs] Well, yeah. So for the... Yeah, so I was gonna try and, uh, video some of it, but here's the deal, there's no light out there, even when there is a little bit of light. Yeah.
• 9:14
Um, I- You have to wait for the, yeah, have to wait for the lightning storm over the lake to get the good light. Right.
• 9:18
Well, with the, with the iPhone doing its, its trickery, there were some pictures that were able to be taken in the very low light of the full moon. But they were, like, three-second exposures.
• 9:31
But trying to do video, guess what you get? Bupkis. Mm-hmm. Potato phone. Look at, oh, look it, there's a big shiny thumb. Speaking of potato phone, let's see what happens here. I gotta, I gotta try this out. Let's see.
• 9:44
Push this button, push that button. I don't know what's gonna happen. Oh, well, I don't know. I guess I don't know what I'm [laughs] doing right now. I thought we had this dialed in. Mark Peterson, everybody.
• 9:58
[laughs] Hey, you know what? I can always cut this shit out, too. Um, or not, I don't care. What, really? Does anybody watch the show anyway? Well- Um, but here's-... it's part of the charm...
• 10:08
here's the, here's the deal. Oh, I should put this thing back. It's part of the charm.
• 10:13
I just gotta say, we had a thing that worked for, I don't know, over 10 years, and then we, I tried to goof it up just 'cause I [laughs] wanted the audio quality to be a little better.
• 10:22
And- Thank you for calling- There we-... MoneyGram agent support line. Whoa. For English- No, that's not the [laughs] right thing- Whoa... either. What the... Oh, oh, it's 818. Okay. You can, no, he can- [laughs]...
• 10:34
hijack all your long-distance charges. Hey. How's it going, Mark? Are you, are you there now? No, he hasn't. Hello. Oh. Can you hear me? Hey. Yeah, we can hear you.
• 10:42
I'd, I'd had, uh, I had this, this vision of the new way to work better and sound better, but at the, at the same time, it didn't sound anything at all. So welcome to the radio program caller. [laughs] How you doing?
• 10:57
Good. How are you guys doing? I'm, uh, long time no hear. Uh, how are, how's everything going for you guys? It is, you know, it's going well.
• 11:05
We're kinda winding down this version of this show, and having, well, obviously, way too much fun, even though it wasn't doing [laughs] what we wanted it to do. [laughs] Um, how about yourself? Sure, sure.
• 11:17
Well, um, I'm, I'm finding ways to be positive through challenging situations. Let's put it that way. Ta-da. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's pretty much the world we live in these days, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 11:30
No, I just recently, uh, had a diagnosis come through from a doctor. Uh, they believe that I've got a condition called endogenously Cushing syndrome, and it's where, um, my body's flooded with cortisol.
• 11:45
So it's, um, it, just an inflammation of just every part, and so everything hurts, everything aches, everything's jacked up, and just a myriad of other, uh, symptoms that I've been exis- experiencing for years that have been getting worse and worse.
• 12:00
So I'm hoping that we can find a resolution of that and I can kinda reclaim my life, because bicycles have been just something that I've been working on, not riding, and it's- Yeah... kinda bumming me out, bro.
• 12:12
So is it like a fibromyalgia kind of thing, or adjacent to it, or totally different? I, I, to be honest with you, I don't have enough technical knowledge to be able to tell you whether they're adjacent or not. Mm.
• 12:23
All I know for sure is that there are a couple different causes of it, and one of them is being a tumor next to your pituitary gland in your brain. Dang. And they have to, like, do surgery to repair that.
• 12:35
Ain't nobody going near my brain, brother... but, uh, it's just basically my, my body is just flooding, getting flooded by s- uh, uh, self-produced, that one chemical that I was talking about, the- Cor- cortisol?...
• 12:48
inflammation chemical. Yeah, yeah. Cortisol. Cortisol. Yeah. There we go. Yeah, yeah. Well, I, that's sort of- But other than that, I mean, other than not riding as much, life is good, man.
• 12:56
I mean, I'm finding life, uh, better and better. How about you guys?
• 12:59
Well, yes, in that I am trying to let go of stuff that I've been holding onto for a long time, including, to some extent, this show, which has always- Yeah...
• 13:10
cau- it, it's, it, it, to me it's more of a financial burden than it is a mental one. But, I mean, I love doing- Yeah... the show. It's one of... I mean, otherwise I wouldn't even be here tonight.
• 13:22
I'd just be like, "Fuck this shit. I'm not doing that anymore." [laughs] But, uh, various, uh- Sure, sure... various other- I, I was curious as to why you were ending it.
• 13:29
Well, it's just that I have been- But you just told me... we have, yeah, we haven't been... I haven't been very good at trying to make money at it, but it's also, it's not something that will make money either.
• 13:41
So it's like a labor of love kind of thing, but when those things start to impact- Right...
• 13:46
your other love lives with your family and your wife and whatnot, then it might be time to investigate what's actually super important versus what's just fun to do on a Wednesday night. Or Tuesday. Or Tuesday.
• 13:59
That is the truth. Whichever, whichever it was. It's been- That's true... a couple different, yeah. So I don't know. I mean, I didn't wanna get [laughs] anyway, I mean- Get existential. Yeah. Yeah. But, uh- No worries.
• 14:08
I, I kinda, kinda understand 'cause it's kinda like a radio show where we just talk and all that kind of stuff, and maybe not a whole lot of revisits on YouTube and all that on the different channels.
• 14:18
Maybe it's just kinda the, the core group listens to it and that's about that. If you guys did videos on bike repairs or all the cool stuff you guys do- Oh... with bikes, I know that stuff would get watched over- Yeah...
• 14:30
and over again. I mean, the, the YouTube channel is s- uh, somewhat of a bright point that's n- not necessarily the show itself, but other stuff that we're doing is doing reasonably well.
• 14:40
And all these are incremental gains, so we're working towards that, you know, 4,000 hours you need to monetize your damn YouTube channel. But, uh, I, it's just- Yep...
• 14:49
it, it's taking longer than I anticipated, and that's because I've been not paying attention to what actually works on YouTube, 'cause I, I really don't like what works on YouTube.
• 14:58
So I was kinda hoping we could- Right...
• 14:59
figure out a way where enough people would be like, "Oh, I kinda hate all that, you know, uh, clickbait shit and all that stuff," but at the same- Just take my money- At the same time-... and go get it. [laughs]...
• 15:10
the, the, the, you know, people are just psych- psychology is what it is, and people do what they do 'cause their dopamine brain chemistry says that's what you have to do now.
• 15:20
And we're, you know, that's maybe not what we do. I don't know. But- No, I hear that. So- I hear that, man... I mean, we're, we're- [laughs]...
• 15:28
uh, JK and I wanna do something a little more Milwaukee-centric since we do talk about Milwaukee on the show quite a bit anyway, but that's more focused on Milwaukee, which I think, you know, there's, you know, a million and a half people in the Milwaukee metro area.
• 15:42
So if it's focused on Milwaukee and surrounding areas, maybe that gets a little more buy-in. And then on the full spectrum side, I don't know, I, I've been trying to come up with something that is more
• 15:56
industry, event, and rider-based, you know? Just may- basically inter- you can be- Yeah... on the next show because interviewing people like yourself is kind of what I kind of- Right...
• 16:07
envisioned the original show to be. Uh, so- And I'll be at home. [laughs] And, yeah, for, for that one. For that one. Yes, of course. Yeah, for that show. I know this. Right. I, I know my station.
• 16:17
[laughs] I know my station. [laughs] No, no, we'll, I, I, we've, we've got a, we've got an idea for a new one.
• 16:22
We, hopefully in the next week or two we'll kind of semi-debut the idea and see if we can, uh, figure out what that's about.
• 16:29
But, uh, be that as it may, I know that you got, um, you got a new roommate recently, or a month or two or five ago, uh, that is also a bike guy. Yeah, yeah. It's been really good. Yeah. How's that working out?
• 16:43
Um, uh, like I, I really did not expect it to work out super good. I've been kind of a hermit forever, and I've lived by myself, and I'm, I'm weird.
• 16:51
Like I, I like, I like things a certain way, and when it's not that way, I get upset and frustrated, and I've got some OCDs and stuff. But all in all, it's turned out to be a really, really positive thing.
• 17:04
Uh, my, my roommate's name is JP, and he's been in the bicycle industry actively for 30 years. Hm. In fact, he was one of the very first guys that sold me some of my very first bikes out of, uh, a local bike shop.
• 17:17
So it's kinda cool that down the road, um, we're occupying the same space. We have a lot of the same thoughts and feelings about stuff, and just kinda two bros that love bikes, that live in the same pad.
• 17:30
It eases my financial responsibilities, and in this day and age, I'll take that every day of the week. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Absolutely. That's awesome. I was relating to JK how the, uh,
• 17:42
our intrepid government sent me my very first stipend for having worked my whole freaking life as I turned 62 in July. Really? And I'm like, "Huh, it actually worked. I got a couple bucks." Oh.
• 17:55
"I don't feel too bad about that." [laughs] I mean, in my current situation- Oh... it, it's a drop in the bucket. It's not really...
• 18:02
I, I, I've dug, I've dug a pretty good hole, and it, it's, like, one finger in one spot on the dike, but there's many others still popping off, so. But it- Yeah... here's the thing.
• 18:13
It actually- Before you know it, you have a finger in every hole. Right? [laughs] And then you, you have to spread your toes. Yeah. So, but, uh, but h- but here's the thing.
• 18:21
[laughs] It actually did work, and, um, I am, you know, now receiving a small... It's better than a sharp stick in the eye. I honestly never- Yeah... thought I would get it because I've been self-employed for so long.
• 18:33
Well, and I'm, I'm still wondering whether I'll see it or not. I, I, I'm, I'm, uh, 55, so I'm, what, seven years away.
• 18:40
Well, I could start right now if they would, if I thought the administration would allow it, but- Right... I don't think they will. But- Yeah.
• 18:47
Right now- So 62, so seven more years, and then I don't know if it'll still be here, dude. I, I'm- [laughs]... I'm actually pretty worried about what our country's going through, so. Yeah. I hear you.
• 18:57
Well, to be fair, the only reason I took it now is because I don't know what's happening down the road.
• 19:03
My, and my wife is f- we're fortunate in that she's gonna have a decent, uh, pension, and also if she can wait until 70, then she'll be, you know, maxing that out. But will it still be here?
• 19:17
Now, that's a long ways away s- for her, 'cause she's younger than I am. Yeah. You know? Yeah. So yeah, I'm not, I, I guess this is the Social Security Administration portion [laughs] of the show. Well, I was gonna go.
• 19:28
Uh, Mark, you, at the 55, that is the, that's, that's my f- not finish line, but benchmark. Uh, I just turned the 53 of the yesterday, so I've got one year- Oh, happy birthday. Thank you kindly.
• 19:43
One year and 364 days until all the years that I put into this one place, in their trust fund. We don't have a 401[k]. As soon as you turn 55- Right... they double it, they match it- Wow... 100%. Wow.
• 20:00
I could take it out right now. Wow. I could take it out right now and get everything, but if I wait until that, they double it, so that is totally the... Oh, and now I can pull the rip cord- Yeah...
• 20:10
and get the hell away from here. No, you've, you've got a, you've got an incentive there, right? Oh, that is a massive carrot on the stick. I mean- Then you can-... Tex and Avery style. Like, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, uh.
• 20:18
Well, once you, once you double up on the money, you can afford that thousand dollar Lego Death Star. Oh, good Lord, there's so many things I could just- [laughs]...
• 20:25
I, I, I would just impulse buy, just, just like, uh, the, uh, the motorcycle from Kyle, just to have that and then- In-... want it... in the same garage? Yes. No. Yes. Little baby nuance, petty, dumb things to buy. Yes.
• 20:42
No, but not yet. [laughs] So- This is the dream world- Oh... I live in. Yeah. The aspirational, like, three years down the line. I don't wanna deal with right now. [laughs] It's a little exhausting.
• 20:54
So Mark, you s- you said you were working on bicycles. W- So it, it sounds like you guys... Oh, I apologize. Go ahead. I was just saying, you said you've been working on bicycles, but not riding so much.
• 21:03
What, what have you been doing for, uh, working on bikes? Well, I, I've been working on a 1973 Stella. Um, and it's just a vintage bike for a, a young lady that is my friend's sister-in-law, I guess.
• 21:20
And it, she wanted a full rebuild, uh, restoration. And, uh, that's my bag. I, I love doing that stuff. And she said, "By the way, y- I don't need it back anytime soon.
• 21:32
I'm not gonna be back in the country for a while, so take it for quite a while." So I didn't have any, like, uh, time limits on it, which was very nice.
• 21:40
And, um, I, it's just therapeutic for me to go through and, like, I know it sounds silly, but to, after you've polished every single nut and bolt on a bike, when you put it together, it's, there's just kind of a magical feeling that happens for me.
• 21:55
And it's- Right on. So while you're doing that, you're doing the polishing and you're doing the, you know, the, the restoration, are you, like, fully in the moment?
• 22:04
Or are you, do you have s- like, YouTube videos on in the background, or music, or, uh, your friends talking to you? Or is this just like a total zen thing? All of the above. Uh, it- [laughs]
• 22:18
Depending on, is it Monday, Tuesday, or- My, my kitchen's a bike shop, so I'm always working on a bike. You know? I mean, we're cooking dinner, I'm working on a bike. Mm-hmm. You know?
• 22:26
Um, it, it's, it's one of those things. And I, I, I can't tell you how grateful I am that I made that decision about 20 years ago to turn my kitchen into a bike shop. [laughs] It is, um, yeah.
• 22:38
"Pass me a 9/16th and a spatula, please." Yeah. Evidently. [laughs] Exactly. [laughs] Okay, so- You never know. Something breaks in the kitchen, boom, you got tools. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
• 22:48
All right, so, uh, since this is probably a fairly unique situation, I don't know how many people that are bike people and cook people have a kitchen that's a bike shop, but maybe instead of- Yeah...
• 23:01
you know, instead of bike packing out there in the middle of nowhere in a tent and making coffee on a stupid $200 thing that makes fire, you could just do stuff in your kitchen.
• 23:10
Like, people could send you product and it's like, "Yeah, I'm not gonna go ride, but I'm gonna use it in my kitchen, and I'm gonna be working on bikes when I do that."
• 23:18
It's some kind of YouTube- Yeah, I think that's a wonderful idea... it's some kind of YouTube thing. This is some kind of YouTube thing right here. There's a OnlyFans kink. Oh, yeah. It is. Okay. It is. It is.
• 23:26
Long as he's working barefoot, then it's fine, right? One of the other cool things that I'm doing- Sit on the occasional cupcake... for my clients right now is, uh,
• 23:33
like, uh, I, I'll have clients that come in and, uh, I wanna try to offer them something like, uh, that's different than a bike shop.
• 23:39
So for a certain extra, uh, amount, they can come in and hang out with me while I work on their bikes and ask questions about what I'm doing. Right on.
• 23:47
Well, that makes- So basically they get a lesson on how to work on a bike. Yeah.
• 23:50
Yeah, that makes sense, 'cause it was like the old car shop that said, "It's f- $50 an hour, $60 an hour if you watch, $70 an hour if you ask questions, and $80 an hour if you bring your wife," or something.
• 24:02
[laughs] It was like the sign was like, it just kept getting more expensive as- Ex- exactly. Yeah. Exactly.
• 24:07
But I can serve them coffee or appetizers or whatever, 'cause it's in my kitchen and we're all sitting on barstools, so it's cool. Right on. Right on. Yeah, yeah. That sounds awesome. No, it sounds...
• 24:15
We gotta go visit Mark's kitchen. I think the last time I was out there with you, we went to your parents' house, but I don't think I went to your house. I think we visited your parents for some reason Yeah, yeah.
• 24:25
We went to my parents' house, yeah, up in the valley, 'cause it was close to the resort where we were doing the, the, the, a thing- Saddle- The saddle drive thing... yeah, saddle drive.
• 24:35
Which, you know, I don't know, industry events are kinda goofy now. Well, I miss those days of industry events, you know, basically- Meaning something... well, paying for- Good Lord... paying for me to go around...
• 24:46
that means something... and have [laughs] a lot of fun with my buddies. That was great. Those, those, uh, saddle drive events- How, how have they changed? It's all AI now. Well- It's all- Yeah... AI now... I don't know.
• 24:54
They're much more virtual. No offense [laughs] to him. Uh, they're much more, uh, manufacturer-specific, and there's way less- Right... there's way less paying for hotels and flights and buying beer, so. Yeah.
• 25:07
It's, uh, it's about the top people- Uh, uh... commiserating. Yeah. Oh, yeah. The CEO top o' spear. Because- They killed the fun. Well- Oh, yeah...
• 25:16
yeah, apparently we're not relevant enough with FatBike.com anymore to spend a shit-ton of money taking us all over the country doing stuff when the companies- Yeah...
• 25:24
were making money hand over fist off what we were doing, so. Right, right. It is what it is. I guess, you know, things, it just seems like it- Well, I, I, I feel like fat biking is gonna make a resurgence.
• 25:35
I think it's gonna come back around, but it just takes about a decade and a half. Yeah? Sure. Well, it's, it's certainly coming back here- Yeah, yeah... where we ride because we have the beach back now, so. Yeah.
• 25:46
You know, we've done a couple of full moon rides, and I've done some solo stuff and other people out there riding. And we're getting it where- It's just the in thing now- Where-... in the world...
• 25:55
even a couple, three, two, three years ago. Couple, two, three there. Couple, two, three there. Couple, two, three years ago over there, uh- Couple, two, three...
• 26:02
you c- you couldn't get, you couldn't get, uh, a couple hundred yards past the entrance to the beach in Port Washington. Now, I think we can go all the way to Harrington Beach, which is nine miles each way, so.
• 26:14
And that's all sand wonderfulness. Right. I, I've been seeing those, uh, I've been seeing the pictures of some of the adventures and events you guys have been doing.
• 26:21
Man, you guys have a wonderful hopping bicycle community out there. Oh, yeah. Everything in the Ogden area has kind of dried up as far as, like, bicycle events things go. Yeah.
• 26:34
So, so, well, speaking of dried up, I know the Great Salt Lake is drying up. Isn't there, can't you...
• 26:39
I saw, I saw an article about a dude that had something to do with, like, w- measuring water or d- something with climate change.
• 26:47
But he lives out there, and he has a fat bike, and he rides it out on, I don't know if it's a playa. It's the salt. You know, he rides out there on his bike. Slide on the salt.
• 26:54
And he has a bunch of, um, instruments that he plants in the ground or whatever he does with them, and he's, you know, like, you know, y- s- university scientist guy.
• 27:03
But, uh, there's no, like, let's just- Scientist hippie. Yeah. [laughs] University scientist guy. Freaking hippies. [laughs] Um, so- Probably listen to NPR...
• 27:10
so the, the, there's no like, let's just ride around the- [laughs]... the, the perimeter of the beach of the lake. I, I, I guess, I don't know. It, call me in for that gig. [laughs] I, I think that'd be the awesomest.
• 27:22
Yeah, I'd- Uh, you want me to ride around and look at stuff? All right. [laughs] Yeah, right. May- maybe plant an instrument in the ground. You know, whatever. Right here sound good. Yeah? Yeah, I can do that. Boom.
• 27:32
All right. And then it's the doof, doof. Well, that's how- Every now and then start like bass... that's kinda how- Like tremors. Doof, doof, doof... play live.
• 27:38
Well, that was kind of like, um, a, this last full moon ride. Somehow, I got in the lead. Okay, you lead them out. Okay. And I just got to a point of stopping. I had no really, I, I, I don't know this route that well.
• 27:52
It goes north, and then it turns around and it goes south. Yeah. Pretty simple. And I felt like we went north enough to, like, stop for- [bell ringing] Oh, yeah... top of the hill. Hell, yeah. Or side of the- Oh... lake.
• 28:03
Top of the hill. Yeah. And it was, i- I was just like, "Well, you, you, you- I'm gonna, I'm gonna switch cans here. Sven got a little curmudgeony, I could smell.
• 28:10
He went like, "Well, he probably would go a little bit further." What? And then we... Yeah. Oh. I felt that. I- At least I felt it... well, it wasn't intentional. Well, that's, well, it came off that way.
• 28:20
And words hurt, you know? [laughs] No. [laughs] But, uh- It was a good time to lower tire pressure and have a beer. Yes, exactly. It was a little earlier than need be, but whatever.
• 28:32
I figure- If I'm in the lead, then I stop when I wanna damn stop... damn s- damn straight. In fact, when you're riding the beach, you can stop whenever you want, and people- Yeah...
• 28:40
can keep going because they have to come back the same way. Exactly. So eventually, you're gonna run into them again. Yeah. And if you didn't have- And you have to let go of a lot of that, uh, connective,
• 28:49
emotional connective tissue on people at times because, well, I think so. And that you're gonna get wet from the, at least from the knee down. I was f- You have to be resigned for that...
• 28:59
fortunate this time not to get super soakers. Oh. That'll happen. But yeah, at least the feet. Good Lord. Yes. Mark, are, are you, are you drinking the alcohol these days or not so much? Um, I am cutting way back.
• 29:12
Uh, uh, I want to try to do everything I can to give whatever kind of health, uh, changes I need to be making the best chance that I can possibly give them. Right.
• 29:21
And, um, they, they don't do that under, you know, a, a keg of beer. Yeah. Right. For sure. Right. I mean, I could try, but- [laughs] But- No, I-... I'm probably better off if I just kinda- Well, I don't know...
• 29:33
limit a little bit. Sure. But yeah, I'll have a beer every now and then. Yeah. E- I, I try not to overdo it. Yeah. Here's what I'm thinking.
• 29:38
All those experts are wrong about climate change, so they must be wrong about our bodies, too. And I'm pretty sure that drinking beer- Well, oh, yeah... is the way to be healthy.
• 29:46
[laughs] Well, I'm finding out stuff that I ate when I was a kid- Dude, you gotta drink a bottle-... wasn't healthy for me, and the stuff that I wasn't supposed to eat is healthy for me. Yeah. It's weird.
• 29:54
Everything's changed nowadays. Gotta get JFK on the have, have 12 beers a day plan. It's like, "That's good for your body there, brother." Oh, yeah, the- "Hey, baby. Yeah, yeah." Yeah, yeah.
• 30:03
So I, I got a question for you guys. Just I w- I wanna hear of what, what's kinda going on financially in the area that you're in.
• 30:11
Uh, out here, um, local bike shops are doing really well with service, but retail is just gone. It's just gone. They're, they're laying off people. I, I don't have a job this summer because there wasn't enough work.
• 30:27
Yeah, I would say we're- And I, I would-... kind of in the same boat. Yeah, I mean, my sh- Yeah... so my shop is no longer a retail shop. We are a second floor bike store. Boutique. Boot...
• 30:37
Well, bike boutique- Or more just all wheeler. It's on, it was on one... It's on there. Or no, I'm sorry. It says, yeah Studio. Damn it. Bike studio. Uh- Yeah...
• 30:46
but yes- I've been reading this wrong the whole time [laughs]... mostly, you know, it's, we do s- I do service because we know people that need their bikes serviced, so. And that is fine- Yeah...
• 30:55
because I don't want to be anybody carrying inventory anymore. And I'm trying to divest all of the inventory I had from the shop at this point, and then just, you know- Yeah... have, have the basics.
• 31:08
Some, some chains and some cables, and if you need a new derailleur- Yep... or, because you crashed your bike, or you need whatever, whatever, whatever, I'm not gonna have that part in stock.
• 31:16
I'm gonna order it and I'm gonna wait a day or two and then we'll fix your bike. And that's how it worked before- Yep... the pandemic. That's basically what we did anyway. Yeah.
• 31:25
So all the stuff I had in the retail shop wasn't really repair stuff. It was more, it was more bags for your- Frills... bike packing thing.
• 31:34
It was more clothing, 'cause you, you know, it's stuff that was ancillary to the actual operation of your bike. Sure. Yeah. Sure. So.
• 31:44
I, I was thinking the other day about 2012, 2013 when I first, uh, met you guys, and fat biking was just popping off, and the excitement and energy that was in it, and, like suddenly it went from a sport that there was only like three manufacturers of, that suddenly there was 100 different companies making fat bikes.
• 32:04
And then the market got super saturated and everyone went, "Ah, that's too much," and now they're gone. What the hell? [laughs] Yeah. Well, it's, it's- [laughs]...
• 32:13
you know, it's the, the gravel bikes took over all that until we're gonna get something new. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I- Well, uh, no, I mean, like- You know what it is? Yeah, yeah. It's, it...
• 32:22
I'll tell you what it is right now, Mark. I'm gonna tell you today right here, right now. It's right here. It's a 30- Breaking news... it's the 32 inch wheeled bike. That's the new thing. Oh, I was gonna go 36. Damn.
• 32:33
Is, I mean, because you're, you're moving to the penny-farthing. I mean, there was a bunch of them. I think it's gonna be a 34 in about four years. Yeah. There's the, there's a bunch of them at the MADE show.
• 32:40
There's a bunch of them in, at Eurobike. No, I'm just saying it, b- All right... something like, something like a, like a clunker penny-farthing. A 36, 36- 6'16"... 29. [laughs] Oh, g- oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
• 32:54
[laughs] Oh, God, if you wanna get- [laughs] I don't know... yeah, living your life in a wheelie fashion and- Yeah. Ah, it's all nutty.
• 33:02
[laughs] So I was w- I've been working on this, on this vintage bike and, um, I'm working on the levers, and there's a scratch on the levers, so I can sand the levers and then buff the levers out so they look almost brand new.
• 33:13
You cannot do that with modern bike parts. I've started realizing all this beautiful work that I'm doing on these vintage bikes and stuff, you can't do that to new bikes.
• 33:24
They just don't, they're not conducive to being polished or reconditioned or shaped up or what- whatever. They, they don't have that same kind of, I don't know, panache. Everything seems to be a little bit disposable.
• 33:38
Like, like you're- Yeah... only supposed to have the bike for one season, then sell it to someone else. And I was gonna say, a, a big lighter style.
• 33:42
Well, yeah, I th- I think, I mean, and I came, before I was in be- well, actually, before and after I was in the bike industry, uh, I was in the automotive industry and I w- I worked at many, uh, places as a service advisor.
• 33:56
And basically you're slamming parts. You're, you know, "Eh, that thing, it, it could be repaired, but we're just gonna go ahead and get a new one." You know? It's like- Yeah, yeah... I don't know. Silly stuff.
• 34:10
And I, I kinda think all the componentry nowadays is ugly. It's all like flat black and boring, and rear derailleurs are the size of a football now. Right, and that's- I mean, it's just-... that's why they're black...
• 34:22
there's nothing elegant like Campagnolo or anything anymore... that, that's, black is, black is thinning. Black is thinning, Mark. Yes, it is. That's why [laughs]
• 34:28
you wanna- I mean- You don't want a silver derailleur the size of a, e- with, with pulleys the size of a silver dollar on them. Yes. Have you seen me and my Sturmers? Right. Sturmer fresher.
• 34:37
[laughs] It gets a little sausage casing-y feeling. [laughs] All right. Okay. As a, as a footnote, I think we are gonna see some silver coming back in the, in the market here soon. I think that's a new trend.
• 34:48
Well, between like Velo Orange and Rene Herse and a few of the, and, and Rivendell that are still into the classical look, I... Even Rivendell with their new derailleur, for God's sake. Um, but yes. Yeah, yeah.
• 35:01
I, I do not think you're incorrect and that there are people out there that still like this kind of vintage, not vintage, uh, throwback, uh- Classy... classic. Classic. Well, and thank God for the- Classic...
• 35:13
the, the MADE show. How awesome is that show, the MADE show? I would love to go see that thing, man. Yeah, it would be something that was... It's on my radar. It, but if it's always gonna be in Portland, I don't know.
• 35:26
I, mm. I mean, the old handmade bike show was awesome. Went to several of those, and it was in a different city every year, which meant you got to experience- Yeah...
• 35:35
different bike cultures every year, which is kind of what I thought the whole point was, except for the real- Right... you know, bike jewelry makers to make their bicycle jewelry.
• 35:46
But really it was to get there and meet all the people, you know? Uh, whatever. Yeah, yeah. Tell you what, it's been wonderful talking to you guys. Yeah, right on. Um, I, I miss y'all desperately.
• 35:58
I wish we could go ride together and, uh, I, I hope you guys have a great evening. Love you guys, and I will talk to you in the near future. Let's go pedal. Okay, Mark. Go pedal, go.
• 36:07
Thank, thank, thanks for being on the show. Right on. Thanks, man. Thank you for having me. Later. Bye. Mark Peterson, everybody. He's been, I don't know how many shows he's been on.
• 36:18
He, since we were doing, uh, Weekly Dose of Fat, he's been- Yeah... on a lot of shows. More than- I'm just, I- More than two hands. Yeah. And, and- Lasted a couple times...
• 36:27
and, and maybe toes I'm, I'm hoping that, uh, his- Heads and fingers, knees and toes, knees and toes... I'm hoping his health, uh, gets to where he can- Yeah... be more- It did sound like a fibro-male or a- Kinda.
• 36:37
I mean, I, I- Well, that was a different... I don't hear about that phrase- Met- the malady? I, I- Currently... have something- It sounds like a- There's something of that nature... a new, a new branding.
• 36:47
I know When you... I don't know. Maybe it's just when you're 62 years old, your body just hurts. And yet- It's not the years, it's the mileage, son. [laughs] Bouncing off all those trees and all that stuff.
• 36:57
I'm telling you. I, yeah. Uh- There's a bit of creaking on- I don't know. We-... these young bones of mine... we covered most of the, we covered most of the junk on this list.
• 37:06
One thing I do wanna mention just because- It's in caps... did I say this before? You said it was in caps. I know, but did I actually mention it on the show? No. Uh, so the Cullen...
• 37:16
I don't know, now that Mark, we, now that we had to use it- No, you had to use it, so it didn't really- I had to use it for the show... goddamn it. [laughs] So I, I thought it kind of- All right. We're- Yeah.
• 37:24
Well, at some point- It was-... in the not too distant future... it was important before it was useful. Before it was needed. [laughs] Yeah. Fucking thing worked great last week, was- That's just... That was...
• 37:33
Shit, I was- But it-... I, I was waiting- It's the exact same thing that I did with the Los Gatos- Oh, this was like a Looney Tunes, like you lit your own fuse- Same... and it just, like, went. Damn thing.
• 37:42
Uh, Lake Effect Surf Shop's closing. That stinks. Everything on the n-... Why does everything near me [laughs] financially... Well, yeah, like, on that same- It's... No, on that same block, on that same, uh- Yeah...
• 37:59
little row. Sure. They used to have a International Foods and, and- Yeah... that went away. Uh- Well, that, and the surf shop was there for close to 10 years. Yeah.
• 38:08
And r- on the same thing is, uh, Clicks, owned by a Run DMC guy, which is hilarious and cool. The guy from Run DMC has a shop in Shorewood on Capitol- Right. Yeah... on the same building as, like, Effect Edge.
• 38:22
Oh, is he the shoe guy? Yeah. Yeah, okay. Clicks. Oh, yeah. So- It's like, da, da, da, da, da, da... you know, I mean, I know that people don't think that Wisconsin should have a surfing culture, but they do. Yeah.
• 38:33
Oh, shit. Oh, oh, right down the damn road. Yeah. At Atwater. Yeah. I mean, it's not the most robust, I'll tell you. It ain't no Sheboygan, I'll tell you that much. Yeah, Sheboygan, oh, they got the breakers.
• 38:42
You could hide a Volkswagen in them. [laughs] Apparently they will continue. I, there were 20-foot waves up on Lake Superior so, I don't know, whatever. Uh, apparently they'll continue online as, at, to some extent.
• 38:54
I don't know if it's- Well, they do the, the music. I mean, uh, th- they were doing live at Lake Effect. Yeah. Uh, Trapper Schepp has a- Yeah... an investment with them. Yeah.
• 39:05
And that's why he was able to get, like, Craig Finn and- Yeah... big people and da, da, da, da, da. Yeah. And wow, wow, wow. Wow, wow. Yeah. So someone's gonna be like, "Oh, we'll resuscitate this."
• 39:14
Uh, also f- uh, up- It's a, it's- This is my favorite thing of the week, in Milwaukee right now. Upgrades at the Vivarium. Why? How? Because, because the stage is now 27 inches high instead of- Oh, higher or lower?
• 39:30
Higher. Higher. The, I thought they were giving us the lifts. No, they're giving the stage the lifts. [laughs] And that means the peoples are up there. Well, they listened to somebody.
• 39:40
They also, uh, did the HVAC system so that the sound does not escape and piss the neighbors off as much. Well. Oh, and Amanda Huff was just in there. I know, yeah. Oh, Strangelander? Yes. Yes. All right.
• 39:57
Well- That would've been good. That could've... Yeah, yeah. Mm. That's a good vi- a good venue for that, for her haunting voice- I-... at times...
• 40:07
have not seen her since, uh, ch- ch- ch, down the, down the block here at the, uh- Yeah. Nor- normally-... the Linneman's. Oh. Oh, k- when they had, like, bistro seating for, for Rick's sake. They had all the seats.
• 40:20
They had chairs. This is peppery. Yes, it is. I know. And it's not hot. No, it's- It's peppery... peppery. Yeah, it's like a Greenbelt beer. Mm. Which I brought with me, but I didn't wanna haul around bottles,
• 40:32
so they were back at the van. All right. Well, let's, uh- All right. Am I boring you, Greg? No. I, Sven? But now- I guess...
• 40:40
but now my, uh, my whole world has, has changed because I was gonna get rid of that thing, and now we're at... W- we only have four shows left, but w- what if we had 14 shows left? I, I don't know.
• 40:51
[laughs] Well, I'm gonna ride my bike on Saturday from somewhere down to Garibaldi for the Strummer Fest. This is a thing. It's a lot of bands that, uh, do covers, allegiance to The Clash, Joe Strummer.
• 41:07
I- Everything is- I-... in there... it's the best event, one of the best events of the year. I think it's, like, 20-ish. It's 30 bucks with a T-shirt. Get yourself a T-shirt.
• 41:16
It all goes to, uh, Milwaukee Public School music program. Like, sweet. All, like 100% of the, every, all the, the money of, at the door goes to the ar- the music programs of MPS. So. This is a good thing.
• 41:32
I mean, if nothing else, it's, boom, a cool donation to a cool cause. Yep. That needs some damn help. That's a good thing. Mentally and financially at the same- That's a good thing. All right, everybody.
• 41:45
Thank you very much. Thank you, Mark Peterson, for calling in. Thank you, Mark. It was just like, we haven't talked to Mark for a while, so that was a good thing.
• 41:54
I don't even know what I'm doing over here, pushing a button. You're hitting that button. Bye.
• 42:00
  [rock music]
