- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody? Welcome into another edition of the check Odaily,
- 0:13Speaker 1: A special edition of the Checkodaii. It's Andrew Dechecko here,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Eagles Beat reporter friendsidethbirds dot Com, and I'm joined today
- 0:22Speaker 1: by former Eagles and Seahawks fullback Josh Perry. Josh played
- 0:26Speaker 1: three seasons in the NFL thirty seven games twenty nine
- 0:29Speaker 1: with the Eagles, and these are stories that I always
- 0:33Speaker 1: wanted to share, and I think his story of perseverance
- 0:37Speaker 1: is something that will really resonate with the audience. So, Josh,
- 0:41Speaker 1: before we get started, how's everything going on your end?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Oh? Great? You know, I get to still be around
- 0:47Speaker 2: the game. I'm a high school coach in California, Northern
- 0:50Speaker 2: California at del Oro High School, so I still get
- 0:53Speaker 2: to share those special bonds and memories and the times
- 0:59Speaker 2: of being on the field. And it was such a
- 1:01Speaker 2: special time. I remember those guys we were with and
- 1:04Speaker 2: playing in Super Bowl thirty nine, and it's just fun
- 1:08Speaker 2: to just how much realize how much the game gives
- 1:12Speaker 2: to so many people, and to be a part of
- 1:14Speaker 2: that fraternity is pretty cool.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Absolutely. So let's go back to the beginning here, and
- 1:20Speaker 1: you started forty three games at San Jose State. You
- 1:23Speaker 1: were second team All wac All whack as a senior.
- 1:28Speaker 1: What was the pre draft process like for you?
- 1:31Speaker 2: Oh? It was exciting, man, it was fun. I enjoyed
- 1:34Speaker 2: playing backer. I was a defensive guy growing up, and
- 1:38Speaker 2: that challenge is stopping somebody. I just love langbacker, you know,
- 1:41Speaker 2: And that's why I played in college San Jose and
- 1:43Speaker 2: met some great people, met my wife, and then I
- 1:47Speaker 2: had a chance to play it. I remember Ron Rivera
- 1:49Speaker 2: was the linebackers because for Andy and Philadelphia, and he
- 1:52Speaker 2: called me talking about drafting me. Maybe I thought I
- 1:55Speaker 2: was going to get draft. Well it didn't happen. I
- 1:57Speaker 2: was a free agent, so okay. And Ron I remember
- 1:59Speaker 2: just feeling different about coach Vera. He was special. It
- 2:04Speaker 2: was fun to be Jim learning from Jim Johnson, Jereed Trott,
- 2:07Speaker 2: playing with Trot, Dawkins, Lee, Tho, Troy, Vincent, Bobby Taylor,
- 2:12Speaker 2: all those great defensive teams, and to be in that
- 2:14Speaker 2: in those meeting rooms, Javon Kurz just fun, you know,
- 2:18Speaker 2: and all those guys learning from taking notes and trying
- 2:22Speaker 2: to make a team, you know, and they got sent
- 2:23Speaker 2: over to NFL Europe. Ron wanted me to play and
- 2:27Speaker 2: get some time, and I met some great guys over there,
- 2:29Speaker 2: played for Frankfurt Galaxy, had a great time, such a
- 2:33Speaker 2: cool experience. Came back, got cut a couple of times,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and then uh Andy asked me to move to fullback
- 2:40Speaker 2: and play with John Ritchie and ended up being a
- 2:42Speaker 2: great friend of mine, backing him up on special teams.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Uh learning offensive side of the ball, the West Coast offense,
- 2:48Speaker 2: learning from Don and t O and Westbrook, and meetings
- 2:52Speaker 2: and all those great players on those teams, and just
- 2:55Speaker 2: such great guys. There's such a I'll pull you and
- 2:59Speaker 2: help you along group, you know, being in the old line.
- 3:01Speaker 2: My roommate was Hank Freiley, bun learning, you know, being
- 3:05Speaker 2: with him starting at center, from Robert Morris, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 2: small just a special time, a special place, the fans,
- 3:14Speaker 2: the East Coast. I'm a California kid, so to be
- 3:18Speaker 2: to have some years, four or five years of that,
- 3:21Speaker 2: it was just great experience, great time. My kid two
- 3:25Speaker 2: of my daughters were born back there while I was
- 3:28Speaker 2: in camp, So such a great time in my life,
- 3:32Speaker 2: my family's life, and to have those bonds with all
- 3:36Speaker 2: those great coaches that are now head guys Ron, you know,
- 3:39Speaker 2: doing his thing. Harbaugh was our special teams guy, Sean
- 3:42Speaker 2: McDermott was in our defensive meeting room guys. All those
- 3:45Speaker 2: guys became head less, frasier, all those guys that we
- 3:48Speaker 2: were a part of. And then to see them all
- 3:51Speaker 2: spread and take what they learned from all those great men,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and you don't have to be a part of that.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And then to share with high school kids like I'm
- 3:58Speaker 2: doing now, it's just special.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Now, before we get into your pro career, Josh, I
- 4:05Speaker 1: understand that your brother, Neil, who I believe played safety
- 4:09Speaker 1: on the San Jose State defense with you for a time,
- 4:13Speaker 1: had a profound impact on your career, and I'm sure
- 4:16Speaker 1: he still does. So would you be able to share
- 4:19Speaker 1: the story of Neil for those who aren't privy to it? Yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 1: because I think it's a it's a really powerful one.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Oh man, it was. That was crazy. You know. I
- 4:29Speaker 2: got had a chance to play with my brother. He
- 4:30Speaker 2: came to San Jose State as a walk on, didn't
- 4:33Speaker 2: know what he was going to do after schools. I say, hey,
- 4:35Speaker 2: come down live with live with me, man, just see
- 4:37Speaker 2: what it's like. And they ended up doing a great
- 4:40Speaker 2: job making the team or being our special team leader,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and it was awesome, so much fun. Was a sophomore
- 4:48Speaker 2: year running down on a kickoff, guy got thrown into
- 4:54Speaker 2: his leg, compound fracture came out. It was, you know, okay, okay,
- 4:59Speaker 2: let's get surger. Everything can be fine. Well it wasn't.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Got infected, ended up getting amputated. And so to see
- 5:08Speaker 2: that process and he ended up coming back and playing
- 5:11Speaker 2: two three years later. You know, the prosthetic running down
- 5:13Speaker 2: on kick punt return or kick off, and to be
- 5:18Speaker 2: a part of that process when I was trying to
- 5:20Speaker 2: make the Eagles, he was going through that coming back playing.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So we were pushing each other and then I ended
- 5:28Speaker 2: up making it, you know, starting some games, playing some
- 5:31Speaker 2: full back and two thousand and five coming back after
- 5:35Speaker 2: the Super Bowl and being part of those teams. And
- 5:38Speaker 2: while he was doing the same time, he was trying
- 5:40Speaker 2: to play with a prosthetic. Well ended up we both did.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And to be pushing each other through that those hard
- 5:49Speaker 2: times when you don't see the end of the light
- 5:51Speaker 2: of the tunnel was special and created a special bond
- 5:57Speaker 2: between us. And now he's coaching the high school down
- 6:00Speaker 2: in the Bay Area, Saint Francis and I just set
- 6:03Speaker 2: up a game that we're playing next year. So, uh,
- 6:06Speaker 2: it's just a special friendship, brother family. Teaching so much
- 6:15Speaker 2: that we we we uh did for each other. That was,
- 6:22Speaker 2: you know, something you'll never forget.
- 6:24Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Man.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And so you mentioned Ron Rivera and how he had
- 6:29Speaker 1: an impact on you as you were coming out of
- 6:32Speaker 1: San Jose State. What do you remember from visiting with
- 6:35Speaker 1: Ron as you were going through the pre draft process.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I just remember him as a teacher, a mentor. I
- 6:42Speaker 2: remember first, you know, meetings, if you showed up early, man,
- 6:45Speaker 2: we were going through stuff. He was just always how
- 6:48Speaker 2: can I help you? Uh? He was the That's what
- 6:51Speaker 2: leaders do, right, They serve how can I help you?
- 6:54Speaker 2: How can I help you be better? And just the
- 6:57Speaker 2: way he was with the guys, the respect, uh those
- 7:02Speaker 2: you know, and then to have them believe in you.
- 7:06Speaker 2: You know, there's no more powerful words than I believe
- 7:08Speaker 2: in you. And and and to realize that, man, it
- 7:12Speaker 2: doesn't matter what level that's at. When when somebody's like
- 7:15Speaker 2: that with you, you just you find a way to
- 7:18Speaker 2: give more. And I always remember that about them when
- 7:21Speaker 2: it was it was it stuck with.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Me, what influenced your decision to sign with the Eagles.
- 7:26Speaker 1: I'm sure you had a number of other teams that
- 7:28Speaker 1: were courting you after the draft, and the Eagles had
- 7:32Speaker 1: Jeremiah Trotter, Mike Caldwell, and Carlos Emmons. I agree, So
- 7:36Speaker 1: it was a crowded house there, Josh. What influenced you
- 7:39Speaker 1: to sign there?
- 7:41Speaker 2: I I number one was wrong and calling me and
- 7:45Speaker 2: personally communicating with them, And number two, it was what
- 7:49Speaker 2: they were building. Man. It was to you want to
- 7:51Speaker 2: be a part of something. You want to be uh,
- 7:54Speaker 2: you want to be at the best right and that
- 7:57Speaker 2: I was where I want to be able to learn
- 7:59Speaker 2: from those guys. I want it to be hard. I
- 8:00Speaker 2: don't want it to be easy. And then you know,
- 8:04Speaker 2: so I just remember and then to to the off
- 8:09Speaker 2: the field stuff that they do as a unit to
- 8:12Speaker 2: be a part of that, you know, I mean, I
- 8:16Speaker 2: think it was just attractive. It was. It was such
- 8:19Speaker 2: a great uh mix of guys, different backgrounds where they're from,
- 8:25Speaker 2: and just such a team that you just wanted to
- 8:28Speaker 2: be a part of it.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Training camp at that point was held at Lehigh University
- 8:33Speaker 1: and practices were quite intense. Were you briefed at all
- 8:37Speaker 1: as to how Andy Reid conducted practices prior to training camp.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you knew right when you walked in the building.
- 8:45Speaker 2: This is different. You learn in Ota is when they're
- 8:47Speaker 2: coming in the spring, you know. And then to be
- 8:50Speaker 2: at that Lehigh University in a small college where people
- 8:55Speaker 2: get to come see you and you're at the you're
- 8:57Speaker 2: on the grass fields and it's the call. It it
- 9:00Speaker 2: just it just was special. I remember sitting in the
- 9:03Speaker 2: ice tubs and big old tubs afterwards together lifting, you know,
- 9:06Speaker 2: driving over the hill morning practice and it was a grind,
- 9:11Speaker 2: it was, but it got you ready for what you
- 9:13Speaker 2: were about to experience. And it really separated right who
- 9:20Speaker 2: was there for the love and who wasn't. And that
- 9:23Speaker 2: was that was a fun experience, and they made sure
- 9:26Speaker 2: you knew. And then by the way, you know, it
- 9:29Speaker 2: was hey, it was ones and ones. It was best.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It was we're going and it was fun for the fans.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I remember all the fans and the scrimmaging and the
- 9:39Speaker 2: signing after and just a cool experience. Said, at that
- 9:43Speaker 2: camp up there and the way they do it, I'm
- 9:45Speaker 2: sure Andy's still doing the same where he's at now.
- 9:47Speaker 2: It's not finding a way to do you know those things. Uh,
- 9:50Speaker 2: it was fun, man, some great great competition.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Were there any veterans who showed you the ropes?
- 9:58Speaker 2: Oh, Ton of the number one Richie, you know, learning
- 10:02Speaker 2: from him meetings fun to learn from a guy that
- 10:05Speaker 2: was all pro. You know, he was the best fullback
- 10:09Speaker 2: in the league at the time. And to be in
- 10:11Speaker 2: those meetings, learning from having put his arm around you, Hey,
- 10:15Speaker 2: you got it, uh, Coy Deptmer learning from him going
- 10:18Speaker 2: reps with the cook you know two's uh, and then
- 10:21Speaker 2: being a great friend of mine, all those linemen, man,
- 10:25Speaker 2: being in those meetings, run Game Coach Castillo and Big
- 10:29Speaker 2: Tray and run and all those you know, may Berry
- 10:33Speaker 2: and it's just they were all so welcoming. Hey, let's go. Uh.
- 10:41Speaker 2: It was always you know, hey, I got you know,
- 10:44Speaker 2: they got it, and you get your job done and
- 10:46Speaker 2: then you earn it and then I just remember it
- 10:48Speaker 2: didn't matter, you know, And it was such a and
- 10:53Speaker 2: that's why we ended up, you know, getting so much
- 10:56Speaker 2: done together. It was just a different group, different guys.
- 10:59Speaker 2: The way they felt about each other, treated each each other,
- 11:03Speaker 2: did things in the off season, did things in the
- 11:05Speaker 2: season during the holidays, that guy over at guy's house,
- 11:10Speaker 2: all those I just remember them all like that, every
- 11:12Speaker 2: single one. I could name them all off the top
- 11:14Speaker 2: of my head. In the locker room, in the training room, uh,
- 11:18Speaker 2: you know, going to playgrounds to build for the elementary schools,
- 11:21Speaker 2: just all that stuff. I was never did they did
- 11:25Speaker 2: anybody not feel welcome? In part?
- 11:29Speaker 1: How how was it that you and Hank Frehley were
- 11:31Speaker 1: paired as roommates?
- 11:33Speaker 2: A good question you'd have to ask, Andy. I don't know.
- 11:35Speaker 2: I know, you get you get your best in status
- 11:38Speaker 2: and you get your own room. Well I wasn't there
- 11:40Speaker 2: yet either. Was fun, but we spent some time together,
- 11:43Speaker 2: had some great times, probably because we were similar, small
- 11:48Speaker 2: college guys, you know, not drafted, uh, trying to grind
- 11:52Speaker 2: and then oh man, those guys can play, and you know,
- 11:55Speaker 2: and then they, you know, all of a sudden were
- 11:56Speaker 2: real similar and it was fun, you know. And then
- 12:01Speaker 2: to see him still coaching now and doing his thing
- 12:03Speaker 2: and his kids. Man, it was just special. Man, I
- 12:10Speaker 2: can't believe how fast time goes.
- 12:13Speaker 1: You're not kidding. So now, obviously the Eagles whole training
- 12:16Speaker 1: camp at the Novacare Complex, but back in your time Josh.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Obviously there were the dorms. So what wasn't essential for
- 12:23Speaker 1: you to have in the dorms to help pass the
- 12:26Speaker 1: time when you weren't studying and you weren't going to
- 12:28Speaker 1: meetings and practice.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what, that's funny, man, because it really wasn't.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Cell phones were still new. All that kind of was new,
- 12:36Speaker 2: and it wasn't like it is now. And so the
- 12:41Speaker 2: number one thing for me was probably true. Man, what
- 12:47Speaker 2: a question I'd say, I'd say the playbook really, to
- 12:53Speaker 2: be honest, because I spent a lot of time studying,
- 12:56Speaker 2: I really did. I didn't want to. I didn't want
- 12:59Speaker 2: to look I can say I didn't give it my
- 13:01Speaker 2: best shot. So to have those playbooks that those guys
- 13:04Speaker 2: used to hand out, you know, the finders and I
- 13:09Speaker 2: that was it taught me a lot that a lot
- 13:11Speaker 2: of different guys learn different ways. Make sure you have
- 13:13Speaker 2: a hard copy a soft copy. Only all have options
- 13:16Speaker 2: for guys. Because that playbook for me when they handed
- 13:18Speaker 2: it to me, and that got me through a lot
- 13:21Speaker 2: of a lot. And then obviously the guys, you know,
- 13:27Speaker 2: being together at the dorms, it was fun. We played
- 13:30Speaker 2: ping pong and all kinds of stuff in those Lee
- 13:33Speaker 2: High dorms and it was a great time. Man. It
- 13:38Speaker 2: was a grind, but it was worth it.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Yeah, And so you look at it and you were
- 13:48Speaker 1: among the final cuts in two thousand and one. Then
- 13:51Speaker 1: you spend that season with the Raiders on their practice squad.
- 13:54Speaker 1: But then the Eagles signed you to a reserve futures
- 13:56Speaker 1: deal and they allocate you to NFL Europe. Played for
- 14:00Speaker 1: the Frankfurt Galaxy. I have to know what that experience
- 14:04Speaker 1: was like.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Oh, I tell you, man, best decision I made to say, hey,
- 14:09Speaker 2: I'm in what do you need? Met some great guys,
- 14:13Speaker 2: great guys that were in the singular spots you know,
- 14:16Speaker 2: on that right there, you're right there. We need you
- 14:19Speaker 2: when you see a little more. And so to play
- 14:21Speaker 2: with some of the guys I got to play with
- 14:22Speaker 2: over there in a different country, learning different uh culture,
- 14:28Speaker 2: learning different languages, learning learning different customs. But but still
- 14:34Speaker 2: people coming because they love the game and they love
- 14:37Speaker 2: to be part of something. And man, uh, what a
- 14:41Speaker 2: great three months. My wife coming over there, my my daughter,
- 14:45Speaker 2: my oldest daughter, she was a baby. We just had
- 14:48Speaker 2: it was just us and to do some of the
- 14:50Speaker 2: things we got to do, go see Barcelona, Scotland. We've
- 14:54Speaker 2: been played in Scotland, uh down in Amsterdam and the
- 14:59Speaker 2: three teams in Frankfurt. Is just I don't know if
- 15:03Speaker 2: I would have had that opportunity if I didn't take
- 15:06Speaker 2: that and to experience those things. I know it It'll
- 15:10Speaker 2: stay with me forever every time I see some of
- 15:13Speaker 2: the you know, my wife got a staying or something
- 15:15Speaker 2: where we went and you know, I didn't think anything
- 15:17Speaker 2: of it at the time, and now I see it
- 15:20Speaker 2: just really cool experience that the NFL was offering at
- 15:24Speaker 2: that time. It ends up being now the UFL and
- 15:28Speaker 2: they're doing it in the States. But man, that was awesome.
- 15:33Speaker 2: That was probably the funnest couple of months I've had
- 15:35Speaker 2: playing the game for the pure love of the game,
- 15:40Speaker 2: you know, in my life was awesome.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Did you feel at that point that the best way
- 15:46Speaker 1: for you to ultimately develop was to simply get reps?
- 15:49Speaker 1: And I feel like that really afforded you that opportunity.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Oh, totally, totally. And that's what it was. It was
- 15:54Speaker 2: just playing, just going to play, just you know, it
- 15:58Speaker 2: was worried about the winds, wasn't about the losses, just
- 16:01Speaker 2: just how you're going to move on to the next play,
- 16:03Speaker 2: keep learning, keep grinding. It's all about timing. It's all
- 16:07Speaker 2: about all those lessons right that you think are cliches,
- 16:11Speaker 2: they're not. You're just you're just going with guys in
- 16:14Speaker 2: a similar spot, trying to trying to impress, trying to
- 16:17Speaker 2: make a team, trying to be a teammate, trying to
- 16:20Speaker 2: be a good dude, a good person, and and and
- 16:23Speaker 2: to be together was was special.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So you're you're back in Eagles camp in the summer
- 16:30Speaker 1: of two thousand and two. You're obviously well versed in
- 16:33Speaker 1: the defense you have, You're better acquitted there. How do
- 16:36Speaker 1: you feel that summer went for you?
- 16:38Speaker 2: Oh? Man, I thought I thought. I thought I was there? Man,
- 16:42Speaker 2: I did. I thought I was. It was you know,
- 16:45Speaker 2: I thought I had made it. I thought, okay, I
- 16:47Speaker 2: got I got a backup, it was gonna be on
- 16:49Speaker 2: special teams. I'm in the number, playing well. I thought
- 16:51Speaker 2: I was playing well, playing well if it was confident,
- 16:54Speaker 2: you know, and that's what those reps. Did you feel
- 16:56Speaker 2: like you belong? You know, let's shoot, let's go play.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Ended up getting hurt the last preseason game playing up
- 17:03Speaker 2: with the Jets, got rolled my knee up on, ended
- 17:07Speaker 2: up signing an injury settlement, getting cut after thinking I
- 17:11Speaker 2: was going to make it. So it was like the
- 17:12Speaker 2: highs and the lows. It was the ultimate low. Man.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I man, man, I really thought I was done at
- 17:18Speaker 2: that point, got cut, got an injury settlement, got hurt. Okay,
- 17:23Speaker 2: I thought I was out. Well, shoot man. That's when
- 17:25Speaker 2: Andy called me and asked me to move to fullback
- 17:27Speaker 2: after that offseason, after thinking I was done.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say, I believe you spent
- 17:34Speaker 1: the two thousand and two season out of football as
- 17:37Speaker 1: you were recovering from that. So, Josh, how did you
- 17:40Speaker 1: process that type of emotion? You mentioned that you thought
- 17:43Speaker 1: that it could have been the end for you. Who
- 17:45Speaker 1: did you lean on and how did you really get
- 17:46Speaker 1: through that tough time?
- 17:48Speaker 2: Yeah? My brother he was fighting, He was doing his workouts,
- 17:52Speaker 2: trying to trying to just step on the field again
- 17:54Speaker 2: at San Jose State. So how could I be over
- 17:57Speaker 2: here complaining about myself getting cut trying to make it NFLT.
- 18:00Speaker 2: What am I doing? This guy has no leg trying
- 18:02Speaker 2: to just play again. I can't stop. So what do
- 18:05Speaker 2: I do? I'm gonna get a job. I ended up
- 18:07Speaker 2: getting a job at a h fact place, delivering stuff,
- 18:12Speaker 2: going to work. Okay, it happens to be not what
- 18:14Speaker 2: I want right now, but I still got to go
- 18:16Speaker 2: to work. And meanwhile I'm training, I'm lifting, I'm helping
- 18:19Speaker 2: my dad coach a freshman team. I'm doing things to
- 18:25Speaker 2: help me, you know, not get negative, not get down,
- 18:29Speaker 2: and I'm trying to Okay, man, we're pushing, we're going,
- 18:31Speaker 2: or we're going, We're going. Kept working out, kept running, working,
- 18:36Speaker 2: making a little money, my daughter, my wife, you know,
- 18:38Speaker 2: and my brother Jack. And then next thing, you know,
- 18:41Speaker 2: Andy kauf Man, I changed my life and I'm forever grateful.
- 18:47Speaker 2: It makes me have a special place in my heart
- 18:51Speaker 2: for that, and it makes me remember that as a coach. Hey,
- 18:55Speaker 2: don't you know, believe in somebody? Say hey, find a
- 18:58Speaker 2: spot form It doesn't happen to be right here, maybe
- 19:01Speaker 2: it's here. And it reminds me to tell you is, hey,
- 19:06Speaker 2: I'm in coach. What do you need? I don't care
- 19:09Speaker 2: if it's a linebacker for what do you need? So
- 19:11Speaker 2: it's a nice it's a fun lesson to share. But
- 19:14Speaker 2: it's also those times when you need you need somebody
- 19:18Speaker 2: to push you. You need somebody to grind you. You
- 19:20Speaker 2: need somebody to hey. You're gonna be all right. You
- 19:23Speaker 2: need somebody to hey. You come to work, you know.
- 19:25Speaker 2: And so it's a big picture thing, and uh, pretty cool.
- 19:34Speaker 1: So you alluded to this, Josh, but I want to
- 19:36Speaker 1: delve deeper into it. You were converted to fullback in
- 19:39Speaker 1: I guess around many camps of two thousand and three,
- 19:44Speaker 1: who initiated that and how was that message delivered to you?
- 19:49Speaker 2: I know, Andy called and asked. I said, I'm in,
- 19:53Speaker 2: and then the running backs coach called Ted Williams. Great guy.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I love Ted h. And then next thing I know,
- 20:01Speaker 2: I'm in the meeting rooms learning the offense in the
- 20:03Speaker 2: OTAs running past pro run game nine on seven, seven
- 20:08Speaker 2: on seven, instead of covering it and defending it, working
- 20:11Speaker 2: on the defense system. Now I'm on the other side
- 20:14Speaker 2: learning the oh. So it was it was cool and
- 20:17Speaker 2: I loved those challenge. I loved the mental part of
- 20:20Speaker 2: the game. So it was it was a It was
- 20:24Speaker 2: a challenge. I looked at it as a challenge how
- 20:27Speaker 2: much can I learn? How much? And ended up playing
- 20:29Speaker 2: in that offense the West Coast and learning from those
- 20:32Speaker 2: guys because I I was a nine ERDs fan as
- 20:36Speaker 2: a kid. I went to those games, my Northern California kid.
- 20:40Speaker 2: So Bill Walsh was he was the inventor of that offense.
- 20:44Speaker 2: So to then go play for a couple guys that
- 20:47Speaker 2: were underneath of Bill and learning that same language, those
- 20:53Speaker 2: same playbooks, so I just ate it up. I loved it.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I love being with the lineman. I love protecting don.
- 21:00Speaker 2: I love sitting next to Westbrook and meetings. I loved
- 21:03Speaker 2: not touching the ball and feeling like I scored a
- 21:06Speaker 2: touchdown when all those guys did. I loved, uh, the
- 21:11Speaker 2: differences of positions, the linemen versus the tight end versus
- 21:15Speaker 2: the receivers. I loved how and you put it all together.
- 21:19Speaker 2: And I loved being in the huddle, you know. I
- 21:22Speaker 2: loved just the difference. It was like it was like
- 21:27Speaker 2: a different game, you know, and it ends and it
- 21:30Speaker 2: ends up being that, and you got your different mindset
- 21:33Speaker 2: a little more. Okay, we're setting them up, we're moving
- 21:37Speaker 2: the ball on the hash, we're personnel for what you know,
- 21:41Speaker 2: And and to see that from the other side just
- 21:45Speaker 2: really opened my eyes to made you love the game
- 21:47Speaker 2: even more.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Uh, new meeting new you know, new men, new new
- 21:53Speaker 3: new positions, the hot process and meetings, and that was
- 21:58Speaker 3: that was exciting man, and at the highest level, I.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Was pretty humbled by that, and it made me just
- 22:08Speaker 2: want to keep grinding everyone.

- 24:31Speaker 1: So coming out of the two thousand and three training camp,
- 24:34Speaker 1: it was something of a breakthrough for you. You make
- 24:36Speaker 1: the practice squad and then you're signed to a reserve
- 24:40Speaker 1: futures deal and you're going into the two thousand and
- 24:44Speaker 1: four season with a pretty good understanding of the offense.
- 24:49Speaker 1: What was your mindset at that time giving it a
- 24:51Speaker 1: go for yet another season another training camp?
- 24:54Speaker 2: Be ready, be ready, be ready? And I was. I
- 24:59Speaker 2: felt confident, I felt good, And you know what I
- 25:03Speaker 2: ended up being on the practice squad grinding. I remember
- 25:07Speaker 2: the Giants had called to bring me up for a
- 25:09Speaker 2: workout and it ended up being on the same day
- 25:13Speaker 2: John Richie got hurt at Detroit, and I remember the
- 25:19Speaker 2: Giants guy in my living room, limo ready to take
- 25:25Speaker 2: me up for my workout whatever. I'm sure they were
- 25:27Speaker 2: going to sign me. And I'm watching the TV and
- 25:31Speaker 2: my wife's like crying, and and and next thing I know.
- 25:36Speaker 2: I get my phone call and it's the uh player
- 25:39Speaker 2: personnel guy for the Eagles. He says, hey, don't go anywhere. Yeah,
- 25:45Speaker 2: we're signing it. And I told the Giants guy, sorry, man,
- 25:50Speaker 2: I'm getting signed to the active roster. He was like, oh,
- 25:53Speaker 2: I'm happy for you. Good luck. Sure you don't want
- 25:55Speaker 2: to be a Giant because I'm I'm you know, what
- 25:59Speaker 2: if I happens and that they come a week earlier,
- 26:01Speaker 2: it doesn't happen that way. I mean, it's just if
- 26:04Speaker 2: I had gone and they signed me. I'm not that.
- 26:06Speaker 2: It's just crazy how that works and how that happened,
- 26:11Speaker 2: and then then I ended up, you know, starting the
- 26:13Speaker 2: next week at fullback. So pretty crazy against the Bearers.
- 26:17Speaker 2: I believe that's soldier field. What did that?
- 26:22Speaker 1: What does that mean for you?
- 26:23Speaker 2: Josh?
- 26:24Speaker 1: I mean, you fell short for consecutive summers, then you
- 26:29Speaker 1: get an opportunity to EGO sign you to I believe,
- 26:31Speaker 1: a three year deal, and all of a sudden everything
- 26:34Speaker 1: you want is right in front of you. What did
- 26:36Speaker 1: that mean to you at that moment?
- 26:39Speaker 2: Ah, It's just I can't even explain it. I can't
- 26:41Speaker 2: explain how the how the house you know, you can
- 26:47Speaker 2: feel so down and you just keep grying. Man, it's
- 26:50Speaker 2: never as bad and it's never as good. It just
- 26:53Speaker 2: it made all those four times of thinking it's over,
- 26:57Speaker 2: it made it just worth it. It made it like, Man,
- 27:00Speaker 2: I would do it all over again to feel this
- 27:02Speaker 2: and to run out of that tunnel and to make
- 27:06Speaker 2: an NFL roster and to have that dream as a
- 27:09Speaker 2: kid and then experience it. I mean, it was something
- 27:17Speaker 2: that sticks with you, something that you want to share,
- 27:19Speaker 2: something you wanted to uh teach kids to cheat, keep battling,
- 27:24Speaker 2: don't give up. But it makes you, It makes you thankful.
- 27:33Speaker 2: I just remember those guys and how they treated me
- 27:36Speaker 2: and how that felt coming out of that game. And
- 27:40Speaker 2: it's crazy because I ended up getting hurt. I got
- 27:42Speaker 2: and uh rolled up on my other knee, big Tommy
- 27:45Speaker 2: Harricks de tackle. I thought I was thought I was
- 27:49Speaker 2: ended up not being torn. So I put a brace on,
- 27:51Speaker 2: grinded through rehab and I didn't miss a game. So
- 27:54Speaker 2: that was But that's why I was there, man, to
- 27:57Speaker 2: make sure I was there for the guys next to me.
- 28:02Speaker 1: And that season was capped with a Super Bowl appearance.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Super Bowl thirty nine set the scene for me Josh,
- 28:08Speaker 1: what was that experience like for you? Media day, the
- 28:11Speaker 1: game itself, what really stands out when you look back
- 28:14Speaker 1: on that opportunity.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Just how it was a big deal. Man, That Super
- 28:22Speaker 2: Bowl was special? How yeah, whether I think it was
- 28:27Speaker 2: four NFC Championship Game appearances in a row and not
- 28:30Speaker 2: making that and then getting to that game, you know,
- 28:33Speaker 2: and we ended up falling short, which is still pisses
- 28:38Speaker 2: me off because you know we Yeah, that was just we.
- 28:45Speaker 2: That was our game. We let them off the hook,
- 28:50Speaker 2: and and that team was was probably one of the
- 28:56Speaker 2: best I've ever been a part of. From those leadership guys,
- 29:03Speaker 2: those guys that led on the field, off the field,
- 29:07Speaker 2: you know, the docs, the McNabb, those guys, the the
- 29:12Speaker 2: guys that led with without the sea on their chest,
- 29:16Speaker 2: you know, such a close group one that realized, man,
- 29:24Speaker 2: we we we let them off the hook. That was
- 29:28Speaker 2: that was ours. We had a team that couldn't be broke.
- 29:36Speaker 2: And then afterwards, after that defeat, it broke and it
- 29:42Speaker 2: wasn't the same. It wasn't we couldn't we couldn't figure
- 29:47Speaker 2: out how to how to harness that again. And then
- 29:52Speaker 2: you know, I got traded after that five season and
- 29:55Speaker 2: six to Seattle played for home run over there, so
- 29:59Speaker 2: that world wind just didn't stop, you know what I
- 30:02Speaker 2: mean that. Uh it was fun though because some of
- 30:06Speaker 2: the Frankfurt, the German reporters that I played for over
- 30:10Speaker 2: over there, they would come in the media day and
- 30:13Speaker 2: that media day was something. It was fun spending a
- 30:17Speaker 2: week down in Jacksonville. I still remember playing golf with
- 30:20Speaker 2: those guys at TPC Sawgrass, just enjoying it. Uh you know,
- 30:25Speaker 2: the players championships played there, so we were uh bet
- 30:29Speaker 2: you know, it was just a fun groute man, and
- 30:33Speaker 2: practicing down there. Just the energy, the buzz everything about it,
- 30:37Speaker 2: the families at the different hotel and how it was
- 30:41Speaker 2: dialed in and he had a dial in our meetings
- 30:43Speaker 2: and uh, I just it's still like it's still kind
- 30:46Speaker 2: of surreal, like, man, did it really? Yeah, you know,
- 30:50Speaker 2: and even players that I coached come with Super Bowl.
- 30:54Speaker 2: It's still kind of uh surreal sometimes and I think
- 30:59Speaker 2: about those guys and what they're doing now and where
- 31:02Speaker 2: they're all at, some of them, you know, close to Philly,
- 31:06Speaker 2: still some way away and Cali like means you know,
- 31:10Speaker 2: but I'm just forever grateful for that experience that was fun.
- 31:18Speaker 1: And for those who don't know, you started in Super
- 31:21Speaker 1: Bowl thirty nine and you actually had a reception in
- 31:24Speaker 1: that game. But Josh, I want to talk to you
- 31:27Speaker 1: about the two thousand and five training camp battle because
- 31:30Speaker 1: you mentioned being close friends with John Ritchie. What's your
- 31:34Speaker 1: recollection of kind of going head to head that summer
- 31:36Speaker 1: You came out on top and started that the two
- 31:39Speaker 1: thousand and five season at fullback.
- 31:42Speaker 2: I you know what, I we were battled then, and
- 31:46Speaker 2: it didn't matter that we knew we were both you know,
- 31:49Speaker 2: it didn't matter how we we battled with everything we had.
- 31:54Speaker 2: He was you know, he was coming back off that injury,
- 31:57Speaker 2: off that rehab figuring in his knee out and he
- 32:01Speaker 2: was grinding, man, and he didn't I I was watching
- 32:06Speaker 2: him and play, and I'm like, man, he looks great.
- 32:09Speaker 2: He's battled. I got my work cut out, and you know,
- 32:10Speaker 2: and we both did, and we both grinded and battled,
- 32:13Speaker 2: and to be honest, ought they were keeping both of
- 32:15Speaker 2: us just you know, I really did. Uh ended up
- 32:19Speaker 2: not working out that way. John ended up being done
- 32:22Speaker 2: after that, and then I started that oh five season, uh,
- 32:28Speaker 2: and and it just kind of made me realize man,
- 32:31Speaker 2: you just never know. Man, it's so finite, it's so precious,
- 32:35Speaker 2: it's so sudden, and then next thing, you know, I'm
- 32:42Speaker 2: I'm I'm trad. You know. It's just crazy, man. But
- 32:44Speaker 2: I'll forever remember the times me and John shared. Uh. Uh.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Just a good guy, man, good guy.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Now, what was, to your best of your recollection, the
- 32:58Speaker 1: biggest hit you ever delivered and what was the biggest
- 33:01Speaker 1: hit that you received.
- 33:05Speaker 2: So delivered? It was probably the Sunday night game against
- 33:10Speaker 2: Washington Sewn Springs, Uh, which man, that Don was scrambling
- 33:16Speaker 2: at the time. At the time, I yeah, I came backwards.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Would have been a penalty, you know, and that's you
- 33:24Speaker 2: can't come backwards. But I you know, I was protecting Don.
- 33:28Speaker 2: You know, he was scrambling and hitch Sean got him
- 33:32Speaker 2: pretty hard on that one hardest. Uh. Let's see, let's see.
- 33:40Speaker 2: You know Ray Ray was always tough Lewis man, he
- 33:43Speaker 2: was those Baltimore games, he was he was no joke man,
- 33:48Speaker 2: and that at those times, those Mike Backers, all of them, man,
- 33:51Speaker 2: I remember, all of just yeah, they were all delivering blows.
- 33:55Speaker 2: You know, their lacker Uh, you know those guys, Dan
- 34:00Speaker 2: Morgan That was some and it made you realize, man,
- 34:05Speaker 2: every week got to strap it on. Doesn't matter who
- 34:07Speaker 2: you're playing, these guys are unbelievable and just to compete
- 34:13Speaker 2: against them and know that you belong that's pretty special.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,

- 35:16Speaker 4: made for Philly fans twenty one and up.
- 35:18Speaker 1: So I want to bring everyone up to speed, Josh,
- 35:21Speaker 1: with what you're up to these days. Your playing career
- 35:24Speaker 1: ended in two thousand and seven. Did you have an
- 35:27Speaker 1: idea at that point that it was over and what
- 35:31Speaker 1: led you to the down the path of coaching?
- 35:35Speaker 2: Yeah? Crazy man. We got retired, got hurt in Seattle,
- 35:40Speaker 2: and ed playing a couple more years, got hurt, ended
- 35:43Speaker 2: up hanging them up, right, So I'm man, what am
- 35:47Speaker 2: I going to do? What am I going to do? Well?
- 35:49Speaker 2: My father in law had a company at the time,
- 35:51Speaker 2: so I went to work with them, just too, because
- 35:53Speaker 2: I want to be around them, right, family, help them out.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Don't know what I'm going So I go work for him,
- 36:00Speaker 2: teach myself code number, a little web code, little database stuff,
- 36:04Speaker 2: working a little software, just you know, nothing, creat just
- 36:09Speaker 2: making money, make supporting the family, helping them bother in law. Right,
- 36:13Speaker 2: Not not thinking I'm going to get into coaching, because
- 36:16Speaker 2: I saw how much you know, time and commit you know,
- 36:19Speaker 2: it's a lot, and so I just didn't think anything
- 36:21Speaker 2: of it. Well ten years ago. By twenty fifteen now
- 36:27Speaker 2: and I meet meet one of the coaches at Del
- 36:33Speaker 2: Oro High School head coach Casey Taylor, and he says, hey,
- 36:36Speaker 2: let's just meet. Okay, yeah, sure, he says, he just
- 36:40Speaker 2: come out. I don't. You don't even have to. You
- 36:42Speaker 2: don't have to just come out, Okay. So I go
- 36:45Speaker 2: out for watching practice and it was I got I
- 36:49Speaker 2: got the I got pulled in, I got pulled into
- 36:53Speaker 2: the to the excitement of changing lives. I love high
- 37:00Speaker 2: school level. I love the fact that sometimes you get
- 37:02Speaker 2: kids that want to go play, and sometimes you get
- 37:05Speaker 2: the guys that can't tie their shoot and they want
- 37:07Speaker 2: to be part of some and they want to learn football,
- 37:10Speaker 2: and so I love that challenge of connecting individually with
- 37:14Speaker 2: each player. I started as the running backs coach, went
- 37:18Speaker 2: to the linebackers coach, went to the defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator.
- 37:25Speaker 2: And now I get the chance to be the head coach,
- 37:27Speaker 2: and so pretty special to share more, learn more, to
- 37:34Speaker 2: be part of a culture, a building, being part of
- 37:40Speaker 2: good habits and teaching great lessons and being respectful and
- 37:45Speaker 2: going to work and all those things that they made
- 37:51Speaker 2: giving me a chance. Now I get to share with
- 37:54Speaker 2: these guys, to give them a chance and whatever they
- 37:56Speaker 2: decide to do. Even if it's not football, if you
- 37:59Speaker 2: don't love it, I still want given what they need
- 38:01Speaker 2: to be successful at whatever you do. If you're a
- 38:04Speaker 2: beat reporter in Philly, I want you to remember this
- 38:08Speaker 2: and know there's lessons that don't just apply it. For me,

- 38:16Speaker 2: I'm so glad I found that. I went to that
- 38:20Speaker 2: lunch and went to that practice and said I'm in

- 39:36Speaker 2: they they're special. There's nothing like it. And to be
- 39:43Speaker 2: in that fraternity and family to know you gave them
- 39:47Speaker 2: everything you have, man, and then to share back these
- 39:50Speaker 2: stories later. Appreciate the chance, the opportunity, Andrew, anything you need,
