- 0:00SPEAKER_04: Well, it's the Winatchie Panther Podcast here on KKRV 1047.
- 0:03SPEAKER_04: Eric Grandstrom with you, and we are in uh episode 10.
- 0:07SPEAKER_04: Believe it or not, we're in the double digits.
- 0:09SPEAKER_04: Woo-hoo! Uh brought to you by Les Schwab and TGR Inc.
- 0:12SPEAKER_04: And as we do each week, first of all, we lead off with our Panther of the Week.
- 0:17SPEAKER_04: Right now we have one of the two.
- 0:19SPEAKER_04: We're hoping maybe we'll get Liam Stuber coming up in just a little bit.
- 0:22SPEAKER_04: Right now we have Annie Detamore.
- 0:24SPEAKER_04: Did I get that right?
- 0:24SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 0:24SPEAKER_04: Okay, all right.
- 0:25SPEAKER_04: Annie is with the uh soccer team.
- 0:27SPEAKER_04: She's a uh uh junior on the uh girls' soccer team.
- 0:30SPEAKER_04: You guys stumbled a little bit, but you've bounced back.
- 0:33SPEAKER_04: Talk about that big win over Eastmont last week.
- 0:36SPEAKER_07: It was so great.
- 0:36SPEAKER_07: We were we they scored on us first, and then we were like, we can't let them win.
- 0:40SPEAKER_07: Like, not gonna happen.
- 0:42SPEAKER_07: So we just put away like we put away four more on them throughout the season.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: So and I guess you got a big goal in that uh game as well.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: I got a goal against Sunnyside.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: Oh, against Sunnyside, that's right.
- 0:54SPEAKER_07: We needed max points against Sunnyside, and I had the third goal to get us max points.
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: After that loss to Eisenhower, what what happened with you guys and and how did did anything change?
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: Did practice change?
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: Did Ashton kind of really hammer you guys or or how was that?
- 1:09SPEAKER_07: We had a team meeting and we just like sat down and talked about our goals and how like what we wanted from the season, and a lot of the girls were like, we want to have fun this season, and we also really want to win.
- 1:18SPEAKER_07: So I think our focus for these past few games was we were really just having a lot of fun playing soccer, and then the results just came as we were having fun.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: And on the notes from Ashton, she talked about how impressed she's been by you changing positions.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: Can you kind of relate that for us?
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: You went from one thing last year to a different thing this year?
- 1:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah, last year I played more of an attacking role, so I was more like by our goal um in our midfield, and then this year I've been playing more of a defensive role just because we lost two of our like really good center backs um last year, so we just had to play more defensively this year.
- 1:50SPEAKER_07: And then against East Mont, I was moved back to center back and I've never really played it, and I was excited for the challenge.
- 1:56SPEAKER_07: I got moved there like a day before the game, and I was just like, well, you know, kind of all or nothing, I guess.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: So there's been some injuries, there's been, you know, uh some players that haven't been able to be there for you guys.
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: How is that with with the next person up for you?
- 2:12SPEAKER_07: I think our like our roster is so we don't have a lot of girls on our team, but our roster is the girls that we do have are so like soccer driven, they all love to play.
- 2:22SPEAKER_07: And so when they get the chance, they just they go out there and they play soccer.
- 2:26SPEAKER_07: And I think I mean it's something that a lot of teams don't have.
- 2:30SPEAKER_07: You know, you have your starters and you have your um reserves, and I think our reserves are just love to play.
- 2:35SPEAKER_07: And so when they get that chance, they just go out and destroy the team that we play.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: You've got uh a couple of weeks left of the season starting tonight.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: This drops Thursday, so it's one of those weird things where good luck tonight, two days ago.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: Uh, but it's West Valley tonight, right?
- 2:49SPEAKER_04: And then coming up on Saturday, you don't have a match on Thursday, but you do on Saturday against Moses Lake at home.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: And that usually those home games on Saturdays are day games, but this one's a night game.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: So kind of fun to play under the lights.
- 3:02SPEAKER_04: Um I know you've got Eisenhower's the last game, right?
- 3:05SPEAKER_04: So payback, right?
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: But you have to take care of business first, right?
- 3:09SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 3:09SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 3:10SPEAKER_07: We have we played East Mot on Saturday at six, so we kind of already have the feel of a night Saturday game.
- 3:15SPEAKER_07: Um so Saturday is senior night, so obviously that creates a distraction, but we're hoping that we beat them 8-0 last time, so we're just hoping to keep the momentum, and then going into Ike, we want to keep the momentum going.
- 3:26SPEAKER_07: So hopefully we can't.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: And it becomes this situation too where you need to score a bunch of goals but not give up basically any goals.
- 3:35SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 3:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 3:35SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's why do you guys actually talk about that?
- 3:38SPEAKER_07: Or is it just, hey, we need to win, let's worry about the rest of it when it comes, or yeah, it's kind of like we start in our formation that we usually start with, and then if we need changes, we kind of just make the changes throughout the game.
- 3:50SPEAKER_07: It's not really uh we know what we're gonna get, we know the players that we are gonna go against, so it's kind of like it's just another soccer game.
- 3:55SPEAKER_07: We're just gonna go out and play, and if we need a change, then we'll change.
- 3:59SPEAKER_04: What's been your funnest moment so far this season?
- 4:02SPEAKER_07: I think beating East Mont.
- 4:03SPEAKER_07: Like especially at their field, too.
- 4:05SPEAKER_07: It's just so fun.
- 4:07SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: Speaking of which, you played on that field probably quite a bit now in your junior year.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: When I was there for the football game on Friday night, that's the best I've ever seen that field look.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: I don't know how it is to play on.
- 4:18SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it's like it's a weird grass texture.
- 4:21SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
- 4:21SPEAKER_07: It's like thick grass.
- 4:23SPEAKER_07: And it gets wet too.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: But so the ball slows down and which is weird because just about every other surfaces.
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: I think Davis has uh grass.
- 4:31SPEAKER_07: West Valley has grass.
- 4:32SPEAKER_07: Oh, they do?
- 4:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 4:34SPEAKER_04: So you you face that again here tonight.
- 4:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: But for the most part, especially when you get into playoffs, it's all on turf.
- 4:39SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 4:39SPEAKER_07: And we have turf too, so it's just it's pretty simple.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: Um, I ask everybody, well, first of all, do you play any other sports or just soccer?
- 4:46SPEAKER_07: I used to play basketball, but no, just soccer now.
- 4:50SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 4:50SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 4:50SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 4:51SPEAKER_04: They haven't uh recruited yet and come play for the Panthers this winter.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: No, not yet.
- 4:55SPEAKER_04: Do you play club ball as well?
- 4:57SPEAKER_07: I used to, like in like I played AU in middle school.
- 5:00SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 5:00SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: Um nicknames.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: I ask everybody if you have a nickname.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: So Annie, do you have a nickname?
- 5:05SPEAKER_07: I don't.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: You don't?
- 5:06SPEAKER_07: No.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm curious.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: You said that you've watched some of these podcasts and we've talked to some people a lot of people don't have nicknames and not really, you know, the conversation kind of good doesn't go anywhere.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: But um I'm also hearing that just me asking that question has kind of started that conversation about, okay, so if I had a nickname, you know, is this a conversation that's happening with your teammates at practice or anything like that?
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: You got a bus ride down to West Valley tonight?
- 5:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah, we'll we'll talk about it.
- 5:36SPEAKER_07: We'll make nicknames.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: What do you want to do after high school?
- 5:40SPEAKER_07: Um I want to become um either like a nutritionist or like a pediatrician or a nurse practitioner, somewhere in that realm.
- 5:48SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: Any idea on a college yet?
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: Or I mean you're a junior, you got time.
- 5:52SPEAKER_07: Not really.
- 5:53SPEAKER_07: I want to play soccer in college.
- 5:54SPEAKER_07: So somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, um, so I can be close to home, my parents can come watch me play stuff.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: So how much how what does it mean to you to have that metal hanging around your neck and be the Panther of the Week?
- 6:05SPEAKER_07: It's really nice, like to see like the hard work paying off.
- 6:08SPEAKER_07: So that's really cool.
- 6:09SPEAKER_04: Well, good luck against West Valley two nights ago tonight, type of a thing.
- 6:13SPEAKER_04: Uh of course against Mosulacon again next week against Eisenhower to wrap up the season.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: Best of luck to hoist that trophy once again.
- 6:21SPEAKER_04: All right, there you go.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: Annie Detamore joining us here as our Panther Athlete of the Week.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: I hear voices out in the hallway.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: We might have Liam Stuber coming up next.
- 6:29SPEAKER_04: If not, we're gonna talk interestingly, we've got uh ROTC on the docket today.
- 6:34SPEAKER_04: So we're gonna talk a little bit about what that is and how uh students can participate in ROTC and what kind of challenge it is, and also what does it mean as far as your curricular activities or extracurricular activities?
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: That's all coming up.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: Plus, BJ is gonna join us uh uh at the end of the show today to talk about uh the uh playoff scenarios.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: We're talking a little bit about soccer, we're gonna talk about volleyball and football and all those types of things.
- 6:58SPEAKER_04: It's all coming up on the Winanch You Panther Podcast.
- 7:00SPEAKER_04: By the way, thanks to Weinstein Beverage, you get to take this if you wish.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: A Pepsi Zero.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: It's all the fun, none of the calories.
- 7:06SPEAKER_04: So there you go.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: We'll take a break, come back.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: We've got more of the Winanch Panther Podcast coming up next on KKRV 1047.

- 8:11SPEAKER_04: When it should panther podcast continues here on KKRV as we have our next athlete of the week here on the pod, Liam Stuber, number eight on your uh roster and number one in your heart.
- 8:25SPEAKER_04: I like that.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: I like that.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: You like that?
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I like that.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: You can tell your mom about that one.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: So, Liam, uh coming off the bridge of sportsmanship, Battle of the Bridges.
- 8:33SPEAKER_04: You guys were close.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: Oh man.
- 8:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was a tough loss.
- 8:37SPEAKER_04: Tough loss, very tough loss.
- 8:39SPEAKER_04: Tell me about that game, and and uh it was kind of hard to get the offense going in that first half.
- 8:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean, they came out, Eastmaw came out and they were they were flying around.
- 8:48SPEAKER_08: Like I can't even lie.
- 8:49SPEAKER_08: They were hitting hard.
- 8:50SPEAKER_08: They were like messy, their blitzes were really good.
- 8:52SPEAKER_08: It was our line was having a rough job picking them up, picking up the blitzes, getting our running back to help like pass protection.
- 8:59SPEAKER_08: So it was just like that's our strength on this team is passing, I would say.
- 9:03SPEAKER_08: And so not being able to see a blitz is a big problem for us.
- 9:07SPEAKER_08: And so we're gonna have to work on that and like the coming for coming up for playoffs.
- 9:11SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 9:11SPEAKER_08: But yeah.
- 9:12SPEAKER_08: I think that was just the main point of not getting our offense going is we couldn't get the ball down the field.
- 9:16SPEAKER_08: We wouldn't have enough time to throw the ball.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: High school football is such a game of momentum.
- 9:21SPEAKER_04: You guys score right literally at the halftime before you go into the break.
- 9:25SPEAKER_04: And I mean, at that point as a player, do you just hey give us like three more minutes here?
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: Let's get the ball back and play some players.
- 9:31SPEAKER_08: No, it was it was more of like a like to show because everyone on the sideline kind of got down a little bit uh going about right before that drive.
- 9:39SPEAKER_08: And we were trying our office trying to say, like, we got we got you guys, like we'll get one on, like, we'll we'll be fine, like it'll be a new game at halftime.
- 9:46SPEAKER_08: And so Chase, like, he head taught me and a couple defenders in the end zone in that on that on that play, and so that just kind of lifted up the whole team's spirits going in the locker room.
- 9:56SPEAKER_08: No one was like down or on themselves, everyone was getting hyped up.
- 10:00SPEAKER_08: It was like, yeah.
- 10:01SPEAKER_08: And I think that first half for us just as a whole team was not very good.
- 10:05SPEAKER_08: We had a lot of penalties.
- 10:06SPEAKER_08: There was just people were playing with their emotions and not just like trying to keep their heads on, you know.
- 10:12SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 10:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was yeah, but coming out in the second half, I feel like we were a lot more level-headed.
- 10:17SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 10:18SPEAKER_04: Well, and East Mont came out and made a statement right away, go down the field and score on our first drive of the second half.
- 10:22SPEAKER_04: So it's like, okay, is what Antie gonna answer here?
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: And yeah, well, you guys did.
- 10:26SPEAKER_08: We did, yeah, we did answer.
- 10:27SPEAKER_08: I mean, we got uh, I think they they had really good East Mon got really good field position a lot of the times when they would go down and score.
- 10:34SPEAKER_08: We had to start down there.
- 10:35SPEAKER_08: I mean, there was one time we started on the 99, and it was like, yeah.
- 10:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, one yard line, and you helped get you out of there towards midfield.
- 10:43SPEAKER_04: I think on my call at one point it said, Stubers loose.
- 10:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah, no, it was yeah.
- 10:47SPEAKER_08: I mean, I we just called a C.
- 10:49SPEAKER_08: We checked seams.
- 10:50SPEAKER_08: One of their I think it was like their safety either blitzed or went down in the box.
- 10:54SPEAKER_08: And yeah, I got re I told Rigo, I looked at Rigo, we made our call and I got the ball pretty hot.
- 11:00SPEAKER_08: But yeah, I did not think I was gonna move that, like move like that.
- 11:03SPEAKER_08: I thought I was gonna get tackled 20 yards then.
- 11:04SPEAKER_08: I wasn't expecting it like that.
- 11:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 11:06SPEAKER_08: Well, you kind of like looking around going, I'm still I'm still up.
- 11:09SPEAKER_08: I was.
- 11:10SPEAKER_08: I was like, after getting past the first guy, I was like, I ain't like I've never, you know, had like just a clear run before like this.
- 11:15SPEAKER_08: It's usually people all around.
- 11:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right, right, yeah.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: And then uh you caught a touchdown pass too.
- 11:20SPEAKER_08: I did, yeah, yeah.
- 11:21SPEAKER_08: I mean, second I mean, second like receiving one of the season, but the first time it wasn't really Micah tipped the ball up and I just caught it in the end zone.
- 11:29SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 11:29SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 11:30SPEAKER_08: This was an actual This was an actual one, yeah.
- 11:32SPEAKER_04: No, I did say that Micah was a decoy on that in the end zone.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 11:36SPEAKER_08: You had the undercut.
- 11:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah, Micah was getting doubled all game.
- 11:39SPEAKER_08: Griffin was getting shadowed the whole time.
- 11:41SPEAKER_08: I mean, it was meant to be me or Chase would have a big game like on Friday because of all the double teams that were happening.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: So let's see, I'm trying to remember.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: So it was, I think, 21-14 after your touchdown, right?
- 11:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 11:53SPEAKER_04: And then uh you guys get another defense makes a stop, you guys get another drive going, and this is still third quarter, I want to say.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: And you catch a ball out in the flat and you go around the corner, and then you collide.
- 12:05SPEAKER_04: I mean, collide with Cooper West for Eastmont.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: And I thought the ball came out at first, that's how I called it, and then I saw, oh, wait, no, that's his helmet.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:16SPEAKER_04: And I mean, he looked like he was out.
- 12:19SPEAKER_08: He was, yeah.
- 12:20SPEAKER_08: I mean, it was it was pretty scary.
- 12:21SPEAKER_08: I caught that the ball coming out on the I mean, as a tight end, catching the ball in the an arrow route is like the best thing because you get a big hit like that, because it's like you're gonna come around in the corners coming to tackle you.
- 12:32SPEAKER_08: Right is good.
- 12:33SPEAKER_08: And I lowered my like I lowered myself to protect myself.
- 12:36SPEAKER_08: We collided helmets, his helmet came off, he was out.
- 12:40SPEAKER_08: And it was like I've done I've knocked someone out before in a game, and it was like, but the kid was out for like 20 seconds.
- 12:46SPEAKER_08: So I went out and like sat down, like was like kind of it felt bad to celebrate, but you know, it was a big it was a good hit.
- 12:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah, just celebrating my team a little bit.
- 12:53SPEAKER_08: But then by the time I got water and came back and he was still knocked out, you know, it's his eyes were open, his hands were I don't even know what it's called, but when they're up, and it's yeah, couldn't you?
- 13:03SPEAKER_08: At that point, I was like, okay, like it doesn't matter what team it is, like I don't want to see someone.
- 13:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I I don't want to paralyze somebody, right?
- 13:11SPEAKER_08: That's like just not something I want to see.
- 13:13SPEAKER_08: And I felt really bad after that, but it's at the same time it's football, like hits are meant to happen, that's what the the risk of the game is.
- 13:20SPEAKER_08: But at the same time, I would never want to see no matter who it is.
- 13:23SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I said on the broadcast at that point, because you know, the crowd goes completely quiet and everybody's taking knees on both sides of the field.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: I said, you know, this is the battle of the bridges, this is bridges sportsmanship, this is a rivalry, this is one, you know, east side versus west side, all that stuff.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: But right now, right now, everybody's on the same team because we just want this kid to be okay.
- 13:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah, just get him off the field and yeah, just hope he can walk himself off the field.
- 13:45SPEAKER_08: Which he did, he got up eventually and got up.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh just so you know, I don't know if you have heard he's he's doing okay.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: He's in a concussion protocol.
- 13:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:53SPEAKER_08: I I know he's good.
- 13:54SPEAKER_04: People told me.
- 13:54SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, kind of a weight off for you, I imagine.
- 13:58SPEAKER_04: I mean, like you say, it's football, it is stuff's gonna happen.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_08: But when you are involved in that, it's a little different.
- 14:03SPEAKER_08: It's a little, yeah.
- 14:04SPEAKER_08: I mean, I mean, once I saw he popped up, I was back into my in the game mentality.
- 14:09SPEAKER_08: It was but at the in the in the moment of him staying knocked out, I was I was worried for him.
- 14:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 14:16SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 14:16SPEAKER_08: Once he popped up though, I was like, okay, he'll be he'll be fine.
- 14:18SPEAKER_08: Like, he'll be good.
- 14:19SPEAKER_04: So bounce back.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: I mean, you've got still a couple more games to play in the regular season here.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: You've got Ike coming up this week, you've got uh West Valley next week, who almost knocked Eastmont off.
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: So that's good, yeah.
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: That could be a tough one.
- 14:30SPEAKER_04: So talk about the bounce back mentality and how's it been?
- 14:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, you've been with this program for a long time.
- 14:35SPEAKER_04: Sometimes you get those games where it's like, eh, you know, the the the wind goes out of the sail, and that's kind of it.
- 14:40SPEAKER_08: I mean, I guess like coming into Ike, energy has like obviously was down at practice yesterday, but we'll pick it back up.
- 14:47SPEAKER_08: We know that we still have a lot more games to play.
- 14:50SPEAKER_08: We still have playoffs coming up.
- 14:51SPEAKER_08: West Valley's a playoff capable team, so we're taking them very seriously.
- 14:56SPEAKER_08: We're doing, we're trying to take or we're trying to take Ike as seriously as we can, you know, just like do our own stuff and just trying to prepare us for playoffs, is what we're trying to do, and prepare ourselves for West Valley.
- 15:08SPEAKER_08: We're not, yeah.
- 15:09SPEAKER_08: That's that's what we're trying to do.
- 15:10SPEAKER_08: Just move forward.
- 15:11SPEAKER_04: You're still having fun with this?
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: Of course.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: Come on now, yeah.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: I had to ask.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: So after we had that discussion earlier this year about nicknames, d uh anything changed on that front?
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: Uh you're still Stu?
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: I'm just Stub, yeah, Stuber.
- 15:26SPEAKER_08: I guess Mitch calls me Lee now, which is confusing because the other Leander crutcher on the O line.
- 15:31SPEAKER_08: We just call each other everyone calls him Lee too.
- 15:33SPEAKER_08: So Lee.
- 15:35SPEAKER_08: Lee.
- 15:35SPEAKER_04: Why why Lee?
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: Just Liam?
- 15:37SPEAKER_08: Um yeah, Lee.
- 15:38SPEAKER_08: Oh, most people call me Stube, though.
- 15:40SPEAKER_04: I'm Stuber.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: Stub.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 15:42SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 15:42SPEAKER_04: We'll we'll keep working on the whole uh thing.
- 15:45SPEAKER_04: What does it mean to have your coach put this around your neck this week and and and honor you as the athlete of the week?
- 15:51SPEAKER_08: I mean, it feels it feels good, especially like knowing that he's recognized the like just the unreck recognized, what's it called, recognition.
- 15:59SPEAKER_08: It feels good that he like I got that.
- 16:01SPEAKER_08: And I mean, I'm not I don't want to I don't like to be the one to do that.
- 16:05SPEAKER_08: So in most of our games, I'm the decoy route for Micah or Griffin.
- 16:08SPEAKER_08: The you know, I'm trying to pull a safety down, I'm trying to get those two open.
- 16:11SPEAKER_08: So then for me to have a game where they're the ones getting me open, and then I got recognized for it, it felt honestly felt good, but it felt kind of different, you know?
- 16:19SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 16:19SPEAKER_08: Being the one who's kick like getting the targets in the game.
- 16:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:22SPEAKER_04: I had you for 70 some odd yards.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: What did you end up with?
- 16:25SPEAKER_04: I think it was 85.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: 85.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, something like that.
- 16:27SPEAKER_04: Sorry, I shorted.
- 16:28SPEAKER_04: No, no, no, you're good.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: You're good.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: Liam Stuber, uh, one of our Panther athletes of the week.
- 16:33SPEAKER_04: Coming up next, we're gonna talk ROTC.
- 16:35SPEAKER_04: Do you know anything about that program?
- 16:36SPEAKER_04: I it's the the Army Army program.
- 16:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: So we're we're gonna find out more about that from its uh leader, uh Larry, and then we're gonna talk to one of the ROTC students, Brea, I believe that's how you pronounce Brea's name.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: Uh and then BJ is gonna talk about playoff scenarios coming up.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: It's all right here on the Winanche Panther Podcast.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: Liam, again, thank you for your efforts, and thanks for joining us here on the podcast.
- 17:00SPEAKER_04: That's for you if you want it.
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: That's for you.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: Yes, it is.
- 17:03SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 17:03SPEAKER_04: Uh Pepsi Zero, all the fun, none of the calories.
- 17:06SPEAKER_04: Oh, perfect.
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: All right, there you go.
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: We'll take a break, come back.

- 18:26SPEAKER_04: It's Larry uh Nal Nalhale Nahalea.
- 18:30SPEAKER_04: Nahalaya, yes.
- 18:31SPEAKER_04: Uh that sounds Hawaiian because it is.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: When were you there?
- 18:35SPEAKER_04: Were you born there?
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I was born and raised in Hawaii, and then when I graduated high school, I went in the military.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: What uh what island were you born on?
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: I was born on Maui, but grew up on the big island.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 18:47SPEAKER_04: Uh how old were you?
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: So after high school you moved away?
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so uh no about when I was 10 or 11.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: So my dad's from there, but and my mom's from Pennsylvania.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: So when I was 10 or 11, uh we moved to Pennsylvania.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: And I graduated high school there and then went into the military after.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: Are you an army brat or military brat?
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: No, my dad's just from there.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: What uh what got you involved in the military, first of all, before we talk about the ROTC?
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: Uh I had always wanted to fly.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: And so um I was just looking for something different.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: I had good grades and all that, but I just, you know, I just wasn't ready for that next step for college.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: So um I was like, all right, let me go in the Air Force and see if I can get a job to fly.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: And that's exactly what I got.
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: How long did you serve?
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: So I did 25 years.
- 19:29SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: So this is next year.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: This is my next career.
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, next career for you.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: I've already done one career.
- 19:35SPEAKER_04: So it makes sense to go into something that is involving the ROTC.
- 19:39SPEAKER_04: How did you get involved in that program?
- 19:40SPEAKER_04: And tell us kind of what the ROTC is.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, so about a year before retirement, or when you click the button to retire in the military, we all get these emails saying, hey, there's this another opportunity out there if you still want to kind of help with the service, but you still have an impact with students and that.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: So I went ahead and applied for it.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: And um, I was trying to stay in Washington because I retired out of Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: Um, because my kids live in post falls, so I was trying to stay semi-close.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: Sure, sure.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: And so I applied for the junior OTC, the Air Force said yes, and then I saw that Wenatchee had it opening five years ago because we're now in our fifth year, and I went for ahead and applied for it, and here I am five fast forward five years.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: Now, five years was that the beginning of the program here.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: So I stood up the program.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: So yeah, we're going into our fifth year.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: So uh we have 86 students this year.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: So we started with 20 some and now we're up into the 80s.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: So it's been very successful.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: Um, I think the community and the high school and everything are really uh embracing us as a group and what we do.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: So um we are uh a program that um we are here, we're not a recruiting service at all.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: We're not here, there's no commitment for the military.
- 20:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think that's the thing that people might think is that, well, okay, if my kid signs up for this, well then they're in the military.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: Yep, so there's no military commitment at all.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: All we are here, uh our mission statement is developing citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation community.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: And the way I tell everybody, we're just trying to help give them the soft skills for when they graduate high school, that they're good adults, they're able to provide to the community.
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: Um, we do a lot of um, you know, all those soft skills.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: So, like interviews like this, speak a lot of public speaking.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: Um, we do a lot of interaction with a lot of students.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: It's kind of nice because um we take a lot of different students from a lot of different backgrounds and they're in the classroom, and students that normally want to talk to each other, work together, we throw them in that room and we're like, here you go now.
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: And I've we do a lot of like forcing people to work with their different people and all that.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: So uh it's working really well and it's pretty successful.
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: Well, obviously the military model is the base for that 'cause you get a bunch of different people together and you have to work together.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: And they're doing really awesome.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Like we just had a raider a raider competition this weekend and we had students that would never mentally push themselves that hard or physically.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: And they all loved every bit of it and they were like, well, we can't wait to do it again.
- 22:03SPEAKER_04: So I should say this is the junior R O T C right.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: Junior R O T C is high school, which is high school.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: And then you have R O T C which is the college level.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 22:11SPEAKER_04: Now a lot of people think, okay, well that's that's the gang that has the fake rifles and they have the flag and that's what they do, you know, before a game for the presenting of the colors type of thing.
- 22:20SPEAKER_04: But there's a lot more involved in the junior ROTC, right?
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: There is.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: Um a lot of people don't know.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: We are um a rotating academic um curriculum, so every so we're on a four-year rotation.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: So the example is this year that our students are gonna get either a history or a PE credit because we have academics just like a normal high school class.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Um so this year it's aviation history and leadership, and then on top of that, though, on top of the academics, we do do the drill and the marching, and we do wear a uniform once a week.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: So all the students have to, you know, be within their hair has to be a certain way, and their nails, and you know, there's rules with jewelry and all that stuff.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: So it's the attention to detail.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: It's just trying to show them that it's not about them, it's about trying to be something that's more than who they are.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: You know, they're part of I try to um make them embrace that hey, I'm not just Larry Nahalea, right?
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: I'm representing Wenatchee High School, I'm representing representing my family, Wenatchee community, the Air Force now, the AF, you know, Air Force Junior OTC.
- 23:26SPEAKER_03: So just they have to believe that it's just more than them now.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: So and I think that you know that's what you get out of athletics too, right?
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: You you have to play for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back, type of a thing.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: And there's a lot of of of high school age kids that, well, I don't have the athletic ability.
- 23:44SPEAKER_04: How can I be part of something that's bigger than me?
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: All right, I'm not musically talented, I can't play in the band, so what am I gonna do?
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: Here's here's an option.
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: And they have this uh awesome because it's all about leadership.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: So we have I have a full staff below me because it's a cadet run program.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: So the students run the program.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: I'm just there to kind of manage it, you know, point them in, you know, kind of nudge them in the right direction if they need it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_03: And um, so we have a like kind of we're set up a lot like an Air Force unit.
- 24:09SPEAKER_03: We have a cadet squad commander, she has a staff underneath her.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: Um, underneath it, we have like mission support, logistics, uh, all these different, you know, avenues.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: And so we're teaching leadership at a young age, uh, attention to detail, how to manage people, how to lead people, because you know, those are all those skills that people really need.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: How to follow instruction from a peer, you know, that's always a tough one.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Like you may not uh understand or respect that person, but you still have to listen to them.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: So we're teaching all that.
- 24:39SPEAKER_04: Which I mean is gonna do nothing but help you in the work world eventually.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: And I keep trying to communicate, like, guys, this is I'm trying to help you for that next step.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: You know, when I you know, when I'm telling you, hey, you're doing that wrong, or you're getting a, you know, your grade might get deducted.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: I'm not doing it, you know, to be mean, but this is the real world.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: Like sooner or later you guys are gonna be part of that real world.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: So now if there's there's m mom, dad out there that are watching this and they're like, hey, or maybe a student that's looking at this going, wow, I think maybe I want to sign up.
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: How does that work?
- 25:09SPEAKER_04: And then what is their how does that you set a class?
- 25:12SPEAKER_04: So in their six, seven periods they have during the day at the high school, one of them is you?
- 25:17SPEAKER_04: Correct.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: So I'm again, I'm just I'm under the CTE, all right.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: And um, so you just go talk to your counselor and say, Hey, I want to sign up for junior OTC.
- 25:26SPEAKER_03: And I have uh four periods that we offer for junior OTC.
- 25:31SPEAKER_03: It's the same curriculum throughout all four of them.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: And um, yeah, and then you just talk to your counselor about it.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: We're about to be going to the middle schools here in the first week of November because we try to get out there and just say, Hey, look, this is a cool program we have at the high school.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: And if you're interested, here's some information about it.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: And then we go back out in February when they're about to actually eighth graders actually starting everybody to sign up for their freshman year and say, Hey, here we are again.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: If you're interested, please sign up.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: But the big thing is just talk to your counselors about it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 25:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, what's the cost?
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: Because there's a uniform involved, and that's zero cost to the students.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: Oh, so I provide everything.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: So we provide everything from your boots to the brown shirt you wear to the socks, the entire uniform, all of that is provided.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: On Thursdays, we we call we do PT every Thursday.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: We provide the PT uniform for them.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: So there's zero cost to students in this program.
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: What's interesting is since the program began, as you say five years ago, I've been to a fundraiser in the summertime for a local fishing organization to help vets that the RTC showed up with junior ROTC showed up with the flags.
- 26:37SPEAKER_04: Um I've been to various public functions.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: I know that what weren't you guys at a Seahawks game?
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: We were just at the Seahawks for a preseason game this past summer, which was an outstanding opportunity for the students.
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: So now that you have this program running, I mean, I'm sure you're getting asked all the time, hey, are they available?
- 26:54SPEAKER_04: Can they come out to this, that, and the other thing?
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and yeah, we um examples Veterans Day right now.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: I think we have 13 um times or 13 opportunities we're presenting the colors, and that's elementary schools, local community churches, and all that.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: So we're pretty busy with that, you know, besides just doing school functions.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: Uh our name is just getting out.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: We are getting out in the community and people are reaching out.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Um I do have to at times say no.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: But uh we try to do our best to support everything that's we can support.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: You mentioned that you're a retired Air Force, but there is not a specific attachment for the junior ROTC.
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: It's not Army, it's not Air Force, or is it?
- 27:32SPEAKER_04: We are Air Force.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: So we are um connected to the Air Force, so Air Force does provide some funding to the program.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: Uh so I have kind of like two bosses.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: I have the school district as a boss, and then I have the Air Force as a boss.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: And an example is in March, they come, they're gonna come and inspect us.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: So we have a big inspection coming down in March from the Air Force.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 27:53SPEAKER_04: Kids you better you know have it all ready to go.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: They'll be ready.
- 27:57SPEAKER_04: Because his job's on the line.
- 27:59SPEAKER_03: It's true.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: Well, thank you for the information.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: Um, is there a contact?
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: Uh I mean, do the kids you said go to the counselors.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Go to the counselors, or if you just see me around the hallway, or you know, uh, I have a school district email just like all the other teachers, please reach out or um talk to our CT director or anybody like that.
- 28:17SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: And that's usually the last name and your first initial.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: Correct.
- 28:20SPEAKER_03: So it's nahalea.lawrence at winatchools.org.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: Okay, all right.
- 28:25SPEAKER_04: And we've got we've had that uh your name spelled out on the bottom of the screen here.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: Um is it is it Brea that's coming out?
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: So you're gonna now um have the opportunity we to talk about a cadet run program.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: So you're gonna get to talk to uh cadet Captain Brea Mons.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: She is our she's a junior and she's our cadet squadron commander.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: She's in her third year in the program.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: Wow, that's fantastic.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:47SPEAKER_04: So how many of you said you got you're up to 85 or so on the program now.
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: How many of those actually matriculate into the military?
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Uh I would say I think in five years we've probably had between 10 and 15.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: Um we have one uh last year we have one girl now at the Air Force Academy, and we have a couple that went ROTC route as well.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: We have some that enlisted into the, you know, different services.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: Uh another example of an amazing opportunity is uh we had one student last year that got picked up for the Alaska Airlines flight program as an 18-year-old.
- 29:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: And so he two weeks after school, he graduated and went moved to Oregon, and he is trying to get his commercial airline license, and Alaska Airlines paying for the whole thing.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Wow, how about that?
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so with this being the junior ROTC, and you mentioned that the ROTC is the college eligibility, is there scholarship uh applications potentially there?
- 29:43SPEAKER_03: There are scholarship opportunities.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: Um, we also have a lot of extra avenues to try to help with those scholarships as well.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Uh we have a lot of connections.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: And then the other thing is if you do go on the enlisted route and you've done at least two years, normally when people graduate basic training in the services, they're an E1, but they can come out as an E2 or an E3.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: So they take some of that time that they dedicated into junior ROTC and try to reward them for that.
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: Which translate into your pay too much.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: Correct, right?
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: Yes, exactly.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: That's a huge deal.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: And that's what I try to tell them.
- 30:14SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: Well, Larry, thank you for your service.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: Appreciate it.
- 30:17SPEAKER_04: Thank you for your extended service with this program.
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, thank you for having me.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: I really appreciate it.
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: You bet.
- 30:22SPEAKER_04: Junior ROTC happening here at Winanchee High School.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: We will talk with the captain.
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: Captain?
- 30:27SPEAKER_04: Captain Bray Amon.
- 30:28SPEAKER_04: All right, Brea's coming up next here on the Winanchew Panther Podcast.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: It's Cole with TGR, your roofing specialist.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Fall is here, and it's a great time to take a look at your roof before winter arrives.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: Check for missing or damaged shingles, clogged gutters, or any signs of leaks.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: Small problems can become bigger problems once the rain, wind, and snow move in.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: If you're not sure what to look for, have a professional take-a-look.
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: At TGR Roofing, we're here to help keep your home protected through every season.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: TGR Roofing, experience you can count on.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: Well, Nancy Panther Podcast continues here on KKRV 1047.
- 31:06SPEAKER_04: We have uh junior ROTC captain, right?
- 31:09SPEAKER_04: Okay, Brea Mann is joining us now.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: Brea, what made you get involved in the junior ROTC to begin with?
- 31:16SPEAKER_05: Well, my dad really wanted me to do it.
- 31:19SPEAKER_05: He did it when he was in high school, and he actually went to a um like a na a Navy military school, not because he was in trouble, but just because he wanted to for a little bit.
- 31:31SPEAKER_05: And he wanted to go into the military.
- 31:33SPEAKER_05: Um he didn't because he got married really young and his first wife didn't let him do that.
- 31:38SPEAKER_05: But um so he really wanted me to do it, and I was like, okay, seems really cool.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: And so I joined freshman year and I just fell in love with the program.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: It's it's amazing.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: It's really like I entered this program and I found what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 31:52SPEAKER_04: So military is it then after after high school?
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: And you're gonna go into the ROTC program in college, or you're gonna go right to the military service?
- 32:00SPEAKER_05: Um what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go on my mission for I think it's around two years, and then I'm gonna go to college and then do ROTC.
- 32:09SPEAKER_05: And then my plan is to major minor in like criminology and biology and then go into the investigations.
- 32:15SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 32:16SPEAKER_04: Through the military or Yeah, through the Air Force.
- 32:19SPEAKER_04: Okay, all right.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: Uh when you first started, were you nervous?
- 32:22SPEAKER_04: Were you kind of scared about okay, what is this?
- 32:24SPEAKER_04: This is kind of high school military type of thing, or did your dad kind of prep you for what you could expect?
- 32:29SPEAKER_05: He didn't really prep me at all.
- 32:31SPEAKER_05: I was kind of scared that they were gonna be like me and that they were gonna kind of be like sergeants and like yell at me.
- 32:35SPEAKER_05: And the first day I sat there and I was like, I don't know who any of these people are.
- 32:38SPEAKER_05: I was so scared.
- 32:39SPEAKER_05: Like the first freshman, when all the freshmen come to school on the first day, I was I was really nervous.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: I was like, I don't know what I'm getting myself into.
- 32:47SPEAKER_05: But um they they became really welcoming, so you know it wasn't it wasn't like scary after a couple days.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: So what year are you now?
- 32:55SPEAKER_05: I'm a junior.
- 32:56SPEAKER_04: You're a junior, okay.
- 32:57SPEAKER_04: And a captain, how does that happen for you?
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: Do you is that something you have to apply for?
- 33:02SPEAKER_04: Is that something you're assigned?
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: Is that is that Larry telling you, hey, you're a captain now?
- 33:06SPEAKER_04: How does that work?
- 33:07SPEAKER_05: Um so usually you rank up, so my freshman year I became an NCO, which is basically an assistant for special projects, which is like planning, um, like parties and stuff like that, like events.
- 33:22SPEAKER_05: And then um then I became an element leader, which you kind of have to do before you become in like a really big leadership position, because it helps you like put yourself out there, and I was leading a class like every single day.
- 33:34SPEAKER_05: Um, the pledge, attendance, um, announcements, all those kinds of things.
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: It was in charge of a whole period.
- 33:39SPEAKER_05: And then um he kind of told me that I like I see a big future for you, and I was I think that you're gonna be great.
- 33:47SPEAKER_05: And so usually when you get in the top three, which is like the highest positions that you can get, the begin like the people before you that so the cad the captain before me um chose me and they kind of discussed like who who it was gonna be.
- 34:03SPEAKER_05: I kind of already knew because I kind of discussed it with senior and um it was just something we talked about for my whole sophomore year that he saw that that was the plan, and I wasn't actually supposed to be the captain, I was supposed to be second in command, and someone else was supposed to do it, but he went to boot camp actually, and so he was gone for a really long time and he needed to be there, and so he put me in the position because the other person couldn't be there.
- 34:33SPEAKER_05: Um so it was kind of just he wanted me to be up there.
- 34:36SPEAKER_05: He saw it more for my senior year than my junior year, but it was it was a long process of figuring out um who was gonna be in the top leadership.
- 34:45SPEAKER_04: But this has to be very empowering for you to have someone, an adult, to choose you and say, and that's not a mom or a dad or a a relative of yours to say, hey, I see potential in you.
- 34:57SPEAKER_04: That's gotta be rather empowering.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Um it's it feels great, you know, to have so much trust.
- 35:03SPEAKER_05: And I've only known him for two two years, so it's great to be able to know that I put myself out there enough that he can see that I'm I have potential to do good things.
- 35:15SPEAKER_04: If I talked to you as an eighth grader or a seventh grader, would and I said, Hey, come your junior year, you're gonna be a junior ROTC captain.
- 35:25SPEAKER_04: What would your seventh grade self told me then?
- 35:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, whatever.
- 35:29SPEAKER_05: I I don't even know.
- 35:31SPEAKER_05: I'd be like, what even is that?
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: I'd be like, what what am I doing?
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: Like, how did I get there?
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: I'd be asking so many questions.
- 35:37SPEAKER_05: I'd be like, what uh what does that involve?
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: Like, you know.
- 35:41SPEAKER_04: Is this not just during school?
- 35:44SPEAKER_04: Is this summertime too?
- 35:46SPEAKER_04: Or not?
- 35:46SPEAKER_04: Oh, it is.
- 35:47SPEAKER_05: We uh we don't do a lot over the summer, but be f definitely before school started, we had two weeks where we had staff training.
- 35:55SPEAKER_05: So for I think four days, we did a lot of planning to get the school year um ready and prepped, and then a week after that we did some more stuff, just like classroom decorating and team bonding stuff.
- 36:10SPEAKER_04: So when you say, you know, there's a lot that goes into whatever you're doing, such as the planning and and execution of that plan and things like that, does that include maybe like Larry was telling us that uh in August there was a preseason football game for the Seahawks where you guys presented the colors?
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: Is that the transportation to get over there and arranging with the team and all that kind of thing?
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: Do you guys handle that too?
- 36:33SPEAKER_05: Or um no, I mean we probably could, but because that's more of administration stuff and um getting cars and stuff like that for transportation would be more of his job.
- 36:45SPEAKER_05: It's more of things that have to do with the whole squadron, so more like like tight-knit stuff, like events that have to do with it or um right now we're planning middle school visits and for the Veterans Day assemblies for all the elementary schools.
- 37:01SPEAKER_05: So we're in charge of like emailing all of the schools and setting it up and making the schedule, like what times we're supposed to be there and all those kinds of things.
- 37:08SPEAKER_05: But we're not in charge of like getting the car and like getting everyone, you know.
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah.
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: Uh up to Larry and and company and the school to get you that all figured out.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: Uh with that, I know that there's a lot of requests of your guys' time that probably they get a hold of Larry and then he turns to you as the as the structure and says, okay, we've got it uh we've got five different uh organizations or twelve different organizations for Veterans Day that want us to come present the colors, for example, or something like that.
- 37:37SPEAKER_04: Then how does that go down the food chain for you and for everybody else to go, okay, here are the ones we can do, and this is how we're gonna do it.
- 37:46SPEAKER_05: Well, I I de I definitely delegate.
- 37:49SPEAKER_05: So right now my special projects officers, they're handling that, and then so they'll get back to me, and I'm also part of all of the emails so like you can see the whole conversation if I needed to.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Um Sorry, I lost my turn.
- 38:05SPEAKER_05: That's okay.
- 38:06SPEAKER_05: Well, and I'm Oh okay.
- 38:07SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, they they talk to me about it, and then if we're like, oh, we have this and this and this time, and then I kind of talk to them, like, what do you think that we can do?
- 38:14SPEAKER_05: And I mean, if I was like super stressed out and have the time, I would just have them handle it completely.
- 38:18SPEAKER_06: Sure.
- 38:18SPEAKER_05: But usually we have staff meetings, so tomorrow or possibly even tonight, because we have we're doing concessions tonight and it's pretty much all of the top staff, so they'll be there, so we'll probably talk about it tonight.
- 38:29SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, we have staff meetings to discuss all these kinds of things, and I'm always there for staff meetings because I have to be have you had friends in school that aren't part of the program that have asked you and maybe you helped recruit a few people along the way?
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: I haven't recruited any of my friends.
- 38:47SPEAKER_05: They don't want to wear the uniform.
- 38:49SPEAKER_05: So and most of my friends.
- 38:51SPEAKER_05: I think it's pretty cool looking.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 38:52SPEAKER_05: Most of my friends now don't even go to the high school.
- 38:54SPEAKER_05: They're doing running start, so I'm like one of the only people that are full-time in the high school right now.
- 38:59SPEAKER_05: Um I we've done middle school vis visits where I've recruited people, especially people that I like when I was freshman year, I went to the middle schools and I saw all these kids that I knew, and so I probably recruited a couple of them.
- 39:12SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 39:12SPEAKER_05: Definitely they've seen me in uniform, and so like the younger kids kind of wanted to, but none of my close friends that are my age.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: So I think that that there's the assumption that, oh, the military, okay, this is involved with the military.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: Well, it's a it's an avenue that you can certainly pursue, but it's not a have to type of thing, right?
- 39:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 39:30SPEAKER_05: So it's just it kind of just gets you in the know of like kind of how it operates, and it's more of a leadership class than anything, so it's more um I kind of compare it to ASB in a way.
- 39:43SPEAKER_05: We're involved in different things, but it's very similar to kind of how the structure works, maybe a little bit more on the military side.
- 39:52SPEAKER_05: Like you have to listen to the people that are above you.
- 39:55SPEAKER_05: Um it's a lot of attention to detail, a lot of respect, a lot of those kinds of things.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: And I think that you're held more accountable for your actions inside of the class and outside of the class than you would be like for ASB.
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: Um like when you're in uniform, you're not allowed to cuss or act, you know, crazy, and you'll get in trouble for it.
- 40:17SPEAKER_05: I've actually had to yell at someone for having disrespectful language in uniforms.
- 40:22SPEAKER_05: So um yeah, it's kind of it's more of along those lines.
- 40:27SPEAKER_04: Now uh I think Larry said tomorrow is uniform day.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: Um so when you're doing the uniform, can't wear the earrings, can't wear the necklace, um and your hair.
- 40:37SPEAKER_04: Uh you've got long, beautiful hair.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: Do you have to pull it put it up or what do you do?
- 40:41SPEAKER_04: Um so if you're you're wearing a hat all day or not, or depends.
- 40:47SPEAKER_05: Um for girls, you you your nails have to be in regs, so like they can't be super long and they can't be like detailed.
- 40:53SPEAKER_05: Like they could be a solid color and then it can't be like hot pink or anything like that.
- 40:57SPEAKER_05: You can wear three rings, only two on one hand.
- 41:00SPEAKER_05: Um you can't well you can wear a necklace as long as you can't see it.
- 41:03SPEAKER_05: So if it's like under the shirt, like no one's gonna know.
- 41:05SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 41:06SPEAKER_05: Um I think you can have one bracelet, and then your earrings can't be like this, they have to be like studs.
- 41:11SPEAKER_05: So I wear like little pearl ones, and then um you can't have any other piercings.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: So if you have a nose piercing, you have to put um one of the clear plugs in.
- 41:19SPEAKER_05: So I know a couple people that do that.
- 41:21SPEAKER_05: And then your hair has to be up, like it can't, like it has to be like slick back, like not a lot of flyaways.
- 41:28SPEAKER_05: If your hair is super long, um you put it in a bun.
- 41:32SPEAKER_05: So um that kind of thing.
- 41:35SPEAKER_05: If your hair is not super long and you can put it in like a ponytail or a braid or something like that, it can't be past like the top of your bra line.
- 41:43SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 41:43SPEAKER_05: So um, and then for males, you have to like shave so like your mustache can't be like past your lips, or like you can't have a full beard.
- 41:52SPEAKER_05: Your their hair can't touch their ears, so it has to be completely shaved, and then it can't be like past the middle of your forehead either.
- 41:58SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 41:59SPEAKER_05: Um and it's the same, like they I think they can only have one ring and no earrings or anything like that.
- 42:05SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: Interesting.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: Tattoos?
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: Um I don't know if we have a role for tattoos in high school.
- 42:11SPEAKER_05: Probably probably not.
- 42:13SPEAKER_05: I think in the military you're allowed to have tattoos and those that it's like not on your hands.
- 42:17SPEAKER_06: Okay, not showing basically.
- 42:19SPEAKER_05: And also with the hat, we only wear hats outside.
- 42:22SPEAKER_05: So like if you're walking to school, walking to your car, um, going to the store after school, like you have to be wearing the hat.
- 42:28SPEAKER_05: But once you're inside, then you don't.
- 42:30SPEAKER_05: And then going to the portables, like that portion of outside, we've made it a no-hat area.
- 42:35SPEAKER_05: So like even though you're outside, you don't have to wear it because it's like in the school.
- 42:38SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 42:39SPEAKER_05: But whenever you're outside of school, you have to wear your hat.
- 42:41SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 42:41SPEAKER_04: Interesting.
- 42:42SPEAKER_04: Interesting.
- 42:43SPEAKER_04: Well, I ask everybody that's a student here when they come in and usually talk to athletes, but I'm gonna ask you, do you have a nickname?
- 42:50SPEAKER_05: Um not really.
- 42:53SPEAKER_05: Um I go my first name's Brea, so I go by B-Ray sometimes.
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: Like I I know a couple friends that call me that.
- 43:00SPEAKER_05: And then um in JC, I I just go by Mon.
- 43:03SPEAKER_05: So I don't know.
- 43:05SPEAKER_05: Some people, some other people have a nickname.
- 43:07SPEAKER_05: They've actually been trying to figure out a nickname for me because we have one of my friends, her last name's McNaught, and we call her McNugget.
- 43:13SPEAKER_05: So we're trying to we're trying to find a nickname for me.
- 43:16SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm actually not sure why I don't have one but um Yeah, it wouldn't work to just use the first letters of your of both names.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: Because that's the Yeah.
- 43:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, that's not a good bell movement.
- 43:29SPEAKER_04: No.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: Wouldn't wanna wouldn't want to go there.
- 43:32SPEAKER_04: So B-Ray, I like that.
- 43:33SPEAKER_04: I like that though.
- 43:34SPEAKER_04: That's that's pretty good.
- 43:35SPEAKER_05: And then our top three, um, so Mon, that's me, and then my other two are Mains and Moore.
- 43:43SPEAKER_05: That's their last name last name.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: So we go by the M and M's.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: So if I say like we have a I write on the whiteboard, like what we're doing for the week and I have a staff meeting and I need them to be there, I write like the M like M and M's and like all those those kinds of things.
- 43:55SPEAKER_05: So it's kinda fun to have little nicknames like that.
- 43:57SPEAKER_04: But well congratulations on on On making that step and having it be such a successful thing in your life so far and helping guide you to your future.
- 44:05SPEAKER_04: That's exciting.
- 44:06SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
- 44:07SPEAKER_04: It's nice to meet you.
- 44:07SPEAKER_05: You too.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: All right, there you go.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: Uh M M, one of the one of the many M's, uh Brea Mon joining us here to talk about the junior R O T C program.
- 44:17SPEAKER_04: Again, uh, you can email Larry uh N-A-H-A-L-E-A.L dot Wananchee Schools.org.
- 44:26SPEAKER_04: We'll get you to Larry, and then you can find out more about the RO junior ROTC program for your kids, for your grandkids, or for you if you happen to be a youngster watching this right now.
- 44:36SPEAKER_04: We'll take a break, come back, and talk about the uh postseason possibilities for Winanchee Sports with BJ Cootz coming up next on the Winanchee Panther Podcast.
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: Les Schwab Tires has been proudly serving communities for over 70 years, and we've collected thousands of inspiring stories.
- 44:52SPEAKER_02: Like Kate, who is off on a long road trip with her best friend, when the dash lit up like a game show.
- 44:57SPEAKER_02: They find the nearest Les Schwab.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: Turns out they really needed an oil change.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: It was done in a flash.
- 45:03SPEAKER_02: Road trip saved.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: At Les Schwab, we're proud to keep you rolling.
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: Les Schwab Tires.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Our greatest story is yours.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Stories or composites inspired by real customer feedback.
- 45:14SPEAKER_04: Our final segment of the Winanchu Panther podcast, we're going to talk about what's coming up on the calendar and uh a possibility for playoffs, which is a very good possibility for a lot of the teams here.
- 45:24SPEAKER_04: BJ Koontz joining us for that.
- 45:26SPEAKER_04: Let me first tell you what's on the calendar for this week.
- 45:29SPEAKER_04: As this drops on Thursday, uh Moses Lake is the site for girls swim and dive.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: Um and that's today and then again next week.
- 45:38SPEAKER_04: So what is what is that?
- 45:40SPEAKER_04: Yes, meet and then uh league meet or yeah.
- 45:44SPEAKER_00: So they're doing on Thursday what they call their league champs.
- 45:47SPEAKER_00: It's basically just a big league meet where everybody comes together.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Then they come the following week for the actual district champs.
- 45:54SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 45:54SPEAKER_04: Uh you've got that coming up.
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: It's happening today at Moses Lake.
- 45:57SPEAKER_04: Uh also at Moses Lake, you've got Panther volleyball on the road tonight at 6 30.
- 46:01SPEAKER_04: Of course, tomorrow it's senior uh night for the Panther football team against Eisenhower.
- 46:06SPEAKER_04: We'll have that as our Weinstein beverage uh game of the week with a pregame at 6 30 from Lee Boftel Field of the Apple Bowl.
- 46:12SPEAKER_04: And then tomorrow it's unusual because it's a night game for uh Panther Girl Soccer against Moses Lake at 7 o'clock.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: What you know, I know they're mostly on Saturdays it's a one o'clock.
- 46:22SPEAKER_04: Uh why an evening game on a Saturday?
- 46:25SPEAKER_00: Well, it I I think it's more about we did this last week against East Mont.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: We did a little evening game.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: Uh it's kind of a fun rivalry game.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: Do it in the evening under the lights.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: Uh maybe a few more people come, hard to know.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: And then this one happens to be our senior night, so also kind of fun to do it in the evening and make it kind of special.
- 46:43SPEAKER_04: Tell me about senior night for football on Friday.
- 46:46SPEAKER_04: Um I mean, there's quite a few seniors on that program.
- 46:50SPEAKER_04: Um and it's it's I th uh you can tell me, I I think it's pretty important to recognize those, especially if they've been in the program for four years.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: It's one of those senior nights is one of the things that I really enjoy and appreciate that we take the time to recognize our seniors, take a time to in a way recognize the parents that have been on this ride with them for a long time.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: A lot of uh packing lunches, watch washing stinky uniforms, uh traveling long distances to watch their kid play.
- 47:17SPEAKER_00: So it's just a moment.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: It's a moment for them to be able to take a picture, be acknowledged.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: And and I think what ends up happening over time is that even the group of parents become a little bit of a community just like the kids do.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: So it's just a moment to get to recognize that.
- 47:31SPEAKER_04: Well, let's talk about uh let's start with football and the potential for postseason.
- 47:35SPEAKER_04: Of course, it's still on the on the docket uh because the top four from the big nine get to play in that round of 32 when it comes time for state playoffs, right?
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: So technically WIA state playoffs for 4A is 16 team brackets, but several years ago um there started getting these cross state kind of regional games.
- 47:55SPEAKER_00: So so uh there's a committee of people that took on what we call week 10, which is the bracket of 32.
- 48:02SPEAKER_00: Uh it is not technically the state tournament.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: It is you have to win that to get into that bracket of 16.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: So uh just like there's RPI committees or selection committees that do all of the placement of people, that will happen for the the round of 32.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: So the Big Nine gets two teams into the round of sixteen, which means we get four into the round of thirty-two.
- 48:23SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 48:24SPEAKER_04: Uh with the loss to East Mont, it's probably positioning what I'm saying to be a third place Big Nine team, provided that you know they beat Eisenhower tomorrow night and and win down on the road at West Valley uh the final game of the regular season, as I'm calling it.
- 48:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 48:38SPEAKER_04: Um so what does that mean for potential for that crossover or playoff or whatever?
- 48:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so uh there we should be in that round of 32.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: There's no doubt about it.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: So we should be playing on that Friday, November 6th, which is fun.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: Uh and a winner moves on to state and uh loser would go home kind of game.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, it it's really gonna come down to where we land kind of across the state.
- 48:59SPEAKER_00: There's a committee of people, they meet regularly, they talk.
- 49:02SPEAKER_00: You know, we're sitting somewhere around that, you know, kind of 18 to 20-ish kind of range, which most likely puts us on the road somewhere.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: Uh it's hard to get a home game.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: You have to be in that top, you know, 16 group.
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: So we'll most likely be traveling on that Friday night.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: And and really it just depends on who they match us up with.
- 49:20SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 49:20SPEAKER_00: Who's gonna be somewhere, you know, hopefully we're matching up with somebody around, you know, nine to thirteen um ranked on the other side.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: So uh and it could be anything.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: Sometimes they get kind of creative and they try to get us playing other Eastern Washington schools.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: Other times you're heading to Vancouver.
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: Like so it's just really hard to know how that'll line up.
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: Uh you've got uh Panther volleyball that's uh winding down their season, they still have another week plus involved in that.
- 49:47SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: Um because they lost to West Valley, but then what West Valley lost, how does that shuffle the the pairings for the So right now us and West Valley are technically tied with the same record, and so we're tied um but we play them on Tuesday night, which when this records it will have already happened.
- 50:04SPEAKER_00: So uh if we can take care of business against West Valley on Tuesday, that um is gonna really help.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: And then our other big competition that's still in the still in the lurking is Davis.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: We play Davis our very last home game of the season.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: It's kind of neat, both of those are home, so we should have good crowds and that should be fun for our kids.
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: But uh in the in volleyball, we get two teams onto the 16 team bracket.
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: But the team that does finish first gets to host district, so we're we're hoping we can be in that mix.
- 50:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, which I mean uh since Jordan took over the program, I mean that's kind of an automatic almost.
- 50:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it feels like it.
- 50:38SPEAKER_04: We're prepared.
- 50:39SPEAKER_04: A little more work this year.
- 50:40SPEAKER_04: Yes, yeah.
- 50:41SPEAKER_04: That's not a bad thing.
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: No, but it's not a bad thing.
- 50:42SPEAKER_00: And in fact, you know, getting a loss along the way is I think really healthy for teams.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: It's healthy for them to kind of go back to the drawing board and adjust some things.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: I'm really impressed with the work that the the kids and the coaches have done to make some adjustments along the way.
- 50:55SPEAKER_04: All right, so that's volleyball.
- 50:56SPEAKER_04: Let's talk about girls' soccer.
- 50:58SPEAKER_04: Um, things are looking pretty good for them too.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: I mean, you win out and you win the title and you get a chance to to host that type of thing.
- 51:05SPEAKER_04: So, where are we there?
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: I think soccer has a a a little bit of a different pathway.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: So Eisenhower is currently undefeated.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: They beat us a couple of weeks ago.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: Uh and our last game of the season is Winatchie at Ike.
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: So they're currently undefeated, and they're 9-0, we're 8-1.
- 51:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, we got three games with the last one being the road trip to Eisenhower.
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: So if we can beat them, then we would technically tie for the league championship.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: And then when it comes to like who gets to host things in the postseason, there's a point situation: goals forward, goals against, shutouts.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: You could just get different point scenario.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: And currently, um, I have it right here in front of me.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: We're behind by about six points with Eisenhower.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: But there's still three games left.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: Three games, okay.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: So and that's just the point side of it.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: So we might have a matching record where we're co-league champs, but who gets to host the district championship or whatnot is gonna come down to those points.
- 52:01SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 52:02SPEAKER_04: Uh that is soccer.
- 52:03SPEAKER_04: We talked about swimming a little bit.
- 52:04SPEAKER_04: How how's the program doing?
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, you're gonna go to Moses Lake no matter what before you go to state over federal way.
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, swimming's uh, you know, we we're league champs, our our girls had a fantastic season.
- 52:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, you can qualify for state two different ways.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: One of them is you finish top two in the district meet that we have a week, you know, a week away.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: Uh you also can meet the WIA has some state qualifying times.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: So there are kids on our team that have met a state qualifying time.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: So they're automatically gonna go either way.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: So a couple different ways that can happen.
- 52:36SPEAKER_00: Uh hopeful that you know top two in our district goes and we were league champs, and I think um we have a really good chance of sending some kids off to state.
- 52:43SPEAKER_04: How's that work with the relays too?
- 52:45SPEAKER_04: Is it the top two as well?
- 52:47SPEAKER_04: So you got four girls or five girls that go as part of the relay team too?
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: Yes, yep, that's right.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: And you can put um I think you can maybe put up to eight kids on your relay card.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: I might be incorrect there, but it you you get to add some kids to that card and then you decide which four swim.
- 53:01SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 53:01SPEAKER_04: Uh cross country, meanwhile, um hosting uh well it's today, you know, two days ago.
- 53:07SPEAKER_04: Um this is the final kind of league meet, and then you've got districts that are down at Eisenhower, right?
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: How's that kind of?
- 53:14SPEAKER_04: How does that work?
- 53:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: So with with uh a sport like cross country, the two teams that place the highest, which is five kids on a team, those two teams go on to state, and then 14 kids not on those two teams.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: So um neither our boys or girls team are probably in that type top two mix, but there might be some kids in the top fourteen not on those two teams that'll get an opportunity to compete.
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: You never know, one of our teams might jump up there and and get first or second.
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: Um but most likely we'll have some kids in that top fourteen.
- 53:48SPEAKER_04: We've had Brookl Brooklyn Buer here a couple of times now, both as a guest on the podcast and then our athlete of the week last week, and sounds like she's having a great season.
- 53:57SPEAKER_00: That that's a kiddo that we should see at the state meet for sure.
- 53:59SPEAKER_04: That's fantastic.
- 54:00SPEAKER_04: And that's in Pasco still.
- 54:01SPEAKER_04: Okay, down at the Sun Willows Golf Course.
- 54:03SPEAKER_00: Yep, December or November 7th, I think.
- 54:05SPEAKER_04: Okay, all right.
- 54:06SPEAKER_04: Who are we missing?
- 54:07SPEAKER_04: I mean, bowling's gonna get started before we know it.
- 54:09SPEAKER_04: I mean that winter sports, you got open gyms going on.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: We've got most of them.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: Slow pitch played in that play-in game a week ago and they lost out, so their season has has come to an end.
- 54:17SPEAKER_00: But the rest you've got it, and you're right.
- 54:19SPEAKER_00: Bowling, we started open gyms this week.
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: So open gyms for basketball, boys and girls, wrestling, boys and girls.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: So that's all kind of getting going, so kids are getting themselves ready.
- 54:28SPEAKER_00: And bowling starts November 2nd, so we don't slow down much around here.
- 54:32SPEAKER_04: I should mention, too, that you probably maybe hear a something happening in the background.
- 54:37SPEAKER_04: We're in BJ's office, by the way.
- 54:39SPEAKER_04: This is where we shoot it each week.
- 54:41SPEAKER_04: And there's a buzz, and I I think it's coming from the lights.
- 54:44SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure, but we didn't have this before when the heat wasn't trying to kick on.
- 54:49SPEAKER_04: It's cold in your office.
- 54:50SPEAKER_04: Yes, my So the heat's on, but I'm not feeling it.
- 54:53SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: You're either in here in the summer and you're really, really hot or you're super cold.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: And then in this time, this winter time, it is always cold.
- 55:03SPEAKER_00: I have there's an old ticket booth that used to be attached here to the back of my office.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 55:08SPEAKER_00: So the windows there is old ticket booth style, they don't seal all the way.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: Um my staff comes in every day and they're like, oh, it's cold in here.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: So I have a little space heater, and um quite often I've got a coat on and gloves and uh heater blowing at my feet uh during this time of year.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: So yeah, and the and the buzz, to be honest, I I've turned off all the lights and it doesn't stop.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: So it just stopped.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: So we we really don't know what it is.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: We've had the M and O in here a couple times trying to identify the buzz.
- 55:36SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 55:36SPEAKER_04: All right, all right.
- 55:37SPEAKER_04: Well, uh the importance of getting a little help.
- 55:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah, definitely.
- 55:41SPEAKER_04: So well, BJ, thank you again for for having us uh giving us the space to do this.
- 55:46SPEAKER_04: Of course.
- 55:47SPEAKER_04: And the space to do this.
- 55:49SPEAKER_04: And it's been a lot of fun for me to get to know the kids a little bit better and and have some fun just having conversations.
- 55:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I yeah, I greatly appreciate it.
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: And it's just really fun to see kind of what we've gotten started here and maybe where it's gonna go.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: And you'll get to meet some new kids with winter getting started pretty soon.
- 56:03SPEAKER_00: So thanks for your time.
- 56:04SPEAKER_04: Speaking of the podcast coming up next week, we've got uh Taylor Mitchell gonna give us a rundown on the final football game of the season.
- 56:10SPEAKER_04: We'll have one of his players as well.
- 56:12SPEAKER_04: We'll also have girls uh soccer coach Ashton Kirkpatrick here and Finley Smith with Girls Soccer.
- 56:18SPEAKER_04: We were supposed to talk to Jody uh today.
- 56:20SPEAKER_04: Uh we'll have to circle back on that.
- 56:23SPEAKER_04: Jody uh is of course the athletic trainer.
- 56:25SPEAKER_04: Um we're talking about Jody Roberts.
- 56:27SPEAKER_04: Um so we'll have to circle back and get her when she's back to health.
- 56:30SPEAKER_04: We we hope everything's okay there.
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: So um also, just speaking of Jody, she came rushing on the field when we had an injury during the game last Friday night.
- 56:39SPEAKER_04: I hear the kid's doing okay for East Mont.
- 56:41SPEAKER_00: Yep, so I understand.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: I visited with Russ just a little bit and sounds like he's gonna be okay.
- 56:45SPEAKER_00: And Jody and I have done quite a bit of debriefing.
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: Um that was a really scary moment for her, for sure, as an athletic trainer to be in that space and um you know, stabilizing and trying to work a kiddo through some a pretty serious injury that appeared to be so.
- 56:58SPEAKER_00: So um you hate you hate to see those things happen.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: It's also it's part of sport, but you also um you know you hold your breath that those kind of things don't happen.
- 57:06SPEAKER_04: Well, I think in it shows that there can be teamwork across the river too.
- 57:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 57:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, to not only facilitate a game like that, but then to facilitate something that, hey, we've got a situation here.
- 57:16SPEAKER_04: We need everybody all hands on deck type of a thing.
- 57:18SPEAKER_00: Yep, yeah, for sure.
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: And we're, you know, we're just really thankful to have our athletic trainers and to have more than one that we have people able to provide support to our teams.
- 57:26SPEAKER_00: And you know, we'll talk a little bit when you do get a chance to talk to Jody.
- 57:29SPEAKER_00: It it's really interesting because both her and Alice they teach full time in the daytime, and then they're really providing medical care for up to 350 athletes at a time.
- 57:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, it's a huge ask and it's a huge undertaking.
- 57:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and then once you're dealing with injuries, you have kind of the coach perspective on the injury, you have uh you know, parent perspective on an injury.
- 57:50SPEAKER_00: Uh it's just a lot to navigate, and we're just super, super thank thankful to have them.
- 57:55SPEAKER_04: We will see you again next week uh on episode 11 next week, here for the Winatchie Panther Podcast for BJ Coots.
- 58:01SPEAKER_04: I'm Eric Grandstrom, thank you very much, and thanks to our sponsors, Les Schwab and TGR Inc.
