Transcript
- 0:05[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, and welcome to the MMKB NFL podcast.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Connor Roar, that's Albert Brear, and I guess you can consider this, are like Giants emergency episode.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: The Titans don't get it.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_01]: I guess we're going to merge and see because it's Wednesday But uh, but you're here.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: The Titans don't get this.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just say this.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: This is one of the blue blood NFL programs that, you know, the owner goes through great lengths to not make
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: had coaching changes, especially after the last three have gone to and out prior to Bryan Dable.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: And yet we have an in-season firing here, a table, let go of four fourth quarter leads of 10 points or more.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson Dart has been in and out of the medical tent by way of usage, and I feel like the team just decided, hey, we can't, we can't do this anymore.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think they also
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: We'll start there Albert.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what is your sense of of why the giants decided to make this move now?
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I have an idea of what they might be looking for, but this this is still.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think we all knew he was going to go at the end of the year.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: But this still represents a little bit of a surprise to me.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think if, like, if anything, it's like the definition of insanity, right?
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's doing the same thing over and over again.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's, I mean, this is the third straight year.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of, like, caught me off guard, but this is the third straight year.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: They're two and eight after ten games, which I didn't realize that until somebody pointed it out to me.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: And, um, you know, I think the way they're losing the games too.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: And it's,
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: the inability to build any sort of momentum.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's been almost two years since they've won consecutive games, which is obviously not a great sign.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was like right around Thanksgiving of 2023, the last time they won consecutive games.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think it's the inexplicable losses, right?
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's the, it's okay, like we've got things on track now and I'm pulling it up because I don't have it right in front of me,
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: All right, like, we know.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't start great, but now we beat the Chargers right like that was a huge win and it looked like that's like the Jackson Dart coming out party And then they lose the Saints the next week right like and then they come back off of that and they have you know Kim Skatevo and Jackson Dart ripping their shirts off with fits on this set and It looks like okay like they beat the Eagles now so now's the point where they're going to build momentum and they come off of that
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: and you have the Broncos game, you know, where they blow what was an 18 point lead in the fourth quarter it's just like this inability to build any sort of momentum and get on track.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's the same thing's hot happening over and over again and I think
- 2:56[SPEAKER_01]: you know, being up by 10 points in Chicago with what was it like 6.15 to go, I went to Chicago, we got the ball, and just having that inability to finish that one off.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know, taking nothing away from the bears, but as good as they've been, I don't think we're talking about the chiefs here, you know.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think it just kind of got to the point for them where it was like
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like, if for better or worse, I feel like they felt like they had given Ryan Dayball enough shots to...
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: to wrestle his way out of it.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: And so, you know, what this allows them to do now is spend two months out in the open.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: They don't need to hide it from anybody.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: Start doing their research on where they're gonna be going in the meantime, they get to take a look at my Kafka.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought this was interesting, too, you know.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: And we can get into the Joe Shane part about this.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: But I thought this was interesting.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: So Joe Shane was in Miami in 2015.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know the interim coach was there that year?
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, Dan Campbell.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_01]: And by the end of the year, you know, who is coordinators for?
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, God, that's a long time ago.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, no, who were they?
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: Factailer and Luena Romo.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I think one of the things that there are, one of the things that helps Kafka here is Joe Shane's experience, right?
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like in that, um,
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he went through that in 15 and I think there was support in the building to keep Dan Campbell's that coach and they didn't wind up doing it.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: They wound up going to Adam Gase instead, but you know, I think that's at least, you know, like one of these things in the background where you look at it and say, like, let's give my Kafka like a real shot at it and
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: is the likelihood he's going to be the coach in 2026.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: No, but, you know, like Leslie's given the runway to see what he can be, because there were a lot of other teams that have interviewed him over the last couple of years that thought a lot of them, and he certainly has a stamp of approval of Andy Reed.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there were a couple of years at the end there with Eric B.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: Enemy where I think Andy Reed was sort of nudging Eric B.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: Enemy and hoping that he got a job, so they wouldn't wind up
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it's when you talk to people around the league, I mean, Capca's name, you know, there's some people that don't think he's ready or that don't think he's necessarily like a head coaching candidate.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: There's some people who swear by him and are amazed that he hasn't gotten a shot yet.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: And here's his chance.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's already reshaping the roster in
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: One way I mean it looks like James Winston's gonna be the back-up which like why should we say have some which at least to have something entertained in a value also like why Didn't that happen before like you know Brian Debel.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think this part of the problem with acquiring Russell Wilson at the beginning and in the first place.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: Don't you?
- 6:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's like, I honestly think it's like having the tiptole around these things, right?
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like I felt like when they signed Jamus and they were they when they signed Jamus and they signed Russ it was sort of like I'm not positive.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: that russ is the better option, but they felt like obligated to give russ the, and I think that was a mistake, right?
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like instead of opening it up and letting James compete with that, which like maybe russ doesn't sign with you, but what, what are their options do you have?
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think having russ a Wilson forces you to tiptole around so many of these things, you know, right?
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's not, and like, a lot of that's not Russ's fault, but like I do think there's an element of that where you're tiptoeing around all of it, and so, you know, it's like, okay, well, for going to Jackson's out, we can't completely embarrass Russell Wilson and make him the third string guy.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: So let's just keep him as the backup.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's sort of how you get there, you know.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, I mean, it's, it's also, it's like the equivalent.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: This would be like the interim head coach, equivalent of removing the ping pong table, right?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like, okay, well, it'll be a popular move.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: I would imagine, like, Russ, or no more cornhole of a locker, no more cornhole.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: No more cornhole, you know, God love Russ, but I think we all know that he can,
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: He's an acquired taste personally and I think especially in situations where time and time again this year, I mean, whether it was getting stone walled at the goal line, whether it was being so bad in the red zone that Brian Debel opted to kick like a 19 yard field goal last week, which may have ultimately been his undoing, right?
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: That was a reflection of how little faith he had in Russell Wilson.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think even if you just throw James in there and he
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: You have a situation where you surprise somebody and you come out with a winner too that you don't I mean you're ending the year on much better vibes than you then you started the year with and I think that was such an easy like okay Yeah, I'm gonna do this real quick and then I'm immediately gonna negotiate myself to the locker room right and I think that I think that that can work to spark them a little bit No, look like I The interesting thing about the giants, I don't think they're devoid of talent, so I think
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: They're, I mean, like, the loss of neighbors hurt, of course, right?
- 8:22[SPEAKER_01]: The loss of scatterbow hurts, of course.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: But like, I don't think they're devoted to the town, to the point where they couldn't pop a team or two.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 8:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they played New England a week from Sunday because they win that game, sure.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like, so I think I think they're,
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: There, I think they have maybe as two weeks for Sunday, whatever it is, but they have a, I think that there is talent on that roster.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I actually think that's why this becomes a really good job too.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think, and so I did kind of a quick canvas when I put out my candidates list and we'll get to that in a second.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: But if you look at what's open and what's probably going to open, okay?
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's what we have right now.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_00]: We have Tennessee, we have the giants.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: Those jobs are currently, I guess, in theory, open.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: the dolphins just fired their general manager and in order to get a good general manager coming in you're probably going to have to give him the option to get a new head coach regardless of how Mike make up and you'll finish as a season.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: You would assume that's open and then some of the other thorny situations that you're looking at around the league are probably Arizona, Atlanta, and Cleveland to some degree.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think it'll be some mixture of those teams that that will have
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: Vegas because Pete Carroll is on a shorter than normal contract.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to cost you a lot to move on from him.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's certainly an option.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: You have to look at something like that there.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: So when you take all the totality of all those, I don't think it's close.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: If you have Jackson Dark back next year, healthy and you have a healthy camscat about and you have a high draft pick with which you can get another offensive lineman in there.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good job.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: And probably is the best job by a comfortable margin.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like I,
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: I've been like, I've taken the cheese the last couple of years, so I'm probably biased here on the Giants, right?
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: But I felt like generally teams that are good at the lines of scrimmage are capable of staying in every game.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I look at like where they're at, like with, um,
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: you know, with Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns and Abdul Carter on their defensive front, we'll see what happens with Tibido.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: They've got some good veteran players they acquire for their secondary and halved in a D-Bo.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like on the offensive side of the ball, like neighbors, Andrew Thomas, we'll again, Skatobo is kind of like a fun guy to watch.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if he's
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's a team that could jump pretty quickly, you know, yeah, that's a team that like you bring in the right GM, you've got some room to operate and from a cap standpoint and you know, I like, and it's All the eagles are great, right, like, but.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_01]: you know you like I've been you've got a chance to make a move in the NFC is to fear if if if you can get this one right and the problem is the giants just haven't gotten it right like the interesting thing to think about too is a lot of something got a head coaching higher right was in 2004 let me screw though right yeah yeah that's on that and more this point which is I like it makes me feel the generation ago you're probably in like high school
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: Oh God, when they hired Tom Cofflin, I was a junior in high school.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I knew it.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: I shouldn't have even brought that up.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: My portrait is there.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: Hello.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: I will say this though.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so you brought up the fact that this could be a quick turnaround.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's a matter of perception and that's probably why.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: Joe Shane gets to stay and why Joe Shane gets to make this move.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: So let's look at the top, you know, rounds one through three, what he's given the team to this point.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: We have K-Bon Tibito, Evan Neal, Wondell Robinson, Josh Azudu, Cordell Flot, Diante Banks, John Michael Schmitz, Jalen Hyatt.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_00]: uh... milk neighbors Tyler knew been Andrew Phillips abdual carter jackson dart dairy dairy salad zander uh... and then you can throw kemp's kimskadbo and there's fourth round pick uh... bit some the dart in theory looks like a hit it looks like a smart pick because he got ahead of a bad quarterback class this year then i think secured the guy
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: My issue is, there's an awful lot of misses to contend with their two.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: There are.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think, I mean, Evan Neill is a huge miss and not that like, not that like, people were out there saying like that that was a bad pick when I loved the pick.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: I was the one picking the time, right?
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: Like, but that, that's a massive swing in a miss.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: Jill and Hiot was definitely overdrafted.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, I like John Michael Schmetz, I guess is a good one.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_01]: He's a starter.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: How many stars do they have in that group?
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, John Legel Schmitz is a starter in theory.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Tyler Nubin is a starter in theory.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: Andrew Phillips is a starter in theory.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: So you're saying, like, they're only starters because the state of the positions on the rock.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: This is just not a deep roster.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, would you agree with that?
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: I would agree.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: I would agree.
- 13:50[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's where I say, like, the building blocks that you have.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: Um, the building blocks that you have are major building blocks, you know, like so, like to me, it's like a lot of the premium positions, your number one receiver, your left tack, or your quarterback, your edge rusher is like, for the most part, like your, what you have to acquire at this point is.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_01]: Not like I wouldn't say just strictly role players because you do need starters, but There are positions that you can fill in like veteran free agency or through trades or later in the draft, you know, so like I feel like they're a position like.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think there are some teams when you look at it and it's like, like Cleveland, for example, right?
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: So Cleveland right now doesn't have a quarterback.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: They don't have a number of receivers.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: They don't have a left tackle.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: Unless DeWan Jones becomes that, which he has it been.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: He's been hurt.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so like Cleveland's got to find a way to fill those three spots.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: Can you do that one off season, right?
- 14:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like you probably can't.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's really, really be hard to, uh, whereas like when you look at the giants, like,
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: Can you find a guard?
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: Can you find a off-ball linebacker?
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: Can you find a safe?
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: You can find those things in order to mean like so, that's why I'm saying like I think like their roster definitely has holes and I think you can definitely point the finger at Joe Shane.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think the counter argument to it is that a lot of the big things are taken care of now and the smaller things are what they need to focus on.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: I also think like the other piece this and I mean look like I've gotten lamb based on social media for it, I'll get lamb based again, I'm sure when people hear me say this,
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: really playing from behind.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's in their methods and the way they did things and Joe was a huge part of coming in and completely revamping who they are, what they are as a franchise, right?
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so they're scouting systems, they're they're analytics the way they use data both, you know, and scouting and coaching getting everything under one umbrella, you know, so everybody's working under one system.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_01]: This is stuff that fans don't give a crap and I don't blame you by the way, like if you're a giant fan.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: No, you're hearing me say this and you're sitting in your car and I'm making you want through your.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: fallin' out the window, like, don't blame me at all, you know what I mean?
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: Like, but those are real things, you know what I mean?
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: And so, and so I think that there's that part of it too where it's like, you know, that's part of what helped Elliot Wolfe survive and New England is that they had been way behind in doing a lot of things there and he had begun to modernize a lot of things in the
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: And then they found, you know, like, oh, well, wait a minute.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this can be a good marriage between him and Mike Frable.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: Same thing in Denver.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Denver, I think was part of it in Denver.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: They were a little older school as well.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: And so, you know, George Pate comes in and updates, they update some things and sort of modernizes some things.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: And now all of a sudden, it's like, well, we're going to bring in Sean Payton.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_01]: they find a way to make those two or together now that looks pretty good, you know, so I've seen it before, but I'm with you, like the track record right now, you know, just based on the draft classes and all of that, like it doesn't look great.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: Have you been looking for a natural way to relieve aches and discomfort?
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: The CBD gummies from cornbread hemp are formulated to work with your body, not against it, guys on a busy Sunday night football, you're writing, you're podcasting, you're taking down notes, you're helping with the kids.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: I can't, I'm wired after these games, but the cornbread gummies are perfect for just, you know, helping me chill out.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: Getting myself into a good headspace and getting to bed, sleeping through the night.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: My sleep has been just so much better since I've started taking these.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: Coinbread Hems CBD gummies are made to help you feel better, whether it's stress discomfort or just needing a little relaxation.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: They only use the best part of the hemp plant, the flower, for the purest and most potent CBD.

- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: Just head to cornbreadhemp.com
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: slash mmqb use code mmqb at checkout.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's cornbreadhemp.com slash mmqb use code mmqb.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: What kind of situation would we have on our hands?
- 18:44[SPEAKER_00]: Let's say in 2022.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: if the giants instead of cave on tibido and have a meal had Drake London and Charles Cross on that team.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: And instead of Wandell Robinson, you have
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: a training bride who win a couple picks later, Kim Durgens, who win a couple picks later.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_01]: You know, okay, we're playing that game in the first round.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think the need, you know, you know, you don't cook.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I'm saying, though, like I do, I do.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'm okay, like I think playing that game is fine in the first round because we all know who the names are and it's their job to figure out who's the greatest of the great one.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think when we get to the second and third round and you start cherry picking names, that's a little bit tougher, you know, because they're right.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: like it's just the percentages are different when you get to that range of the draft.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I think like a lot of people could, you know, look at their fourth round pick in 2021 and say like, well, why didn't we get on Monroe St. Brown right in like, well, like there was only one of those in that draft, do you know what I mean?
- 19:44[SPEAKER_00]: There.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: And so there are some of those where
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: it's tough.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: And the first round there you could certainly say, but the misses on both on both Tibido who doesn't seem like he's contributing a lot on the other lags on him too.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: And that's not yet.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's not like that was that was an easy
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: you know that was just a clean sheet like everyone would take them yeah it wasn't that right for sure that's one you can definitely point to and say like and like for regardless of like what you think of of of of of of tibido the reality is like two years later you know they're drafting a guy in an abdill Carter who's probably already passed him three years later they're
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: And so you can play those games as much as you want.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it looks like the Carter and Jackson dark class could be transformative, and I can belly-ake all I want.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: And I have about Woody Johnson firing Joe Douglas.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought Joe Douglas did a good job.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I can't talk at both sides of my mouth and say that I don't think Joe Shane deserves another shot because as bad as some of his classes were, there are some that I think that could
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, set this franchise up and listen, we don't know what some of these guys look like yet with the different coaching stuff.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think the defensive side of the ball was an absolute mess this year.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think we're gonna talk nearly enough about that because my god, you look at this giant schedule, right?
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: So okay, they start on one.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: They were always gonna lose that game to the commanders.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_00]: Let's say you closed out that game in Dallas, and you were one and one, and then you were one and two losing to the chiefs, you were two and two, you beat the chargers, let's say you beat the New Orleans Saints, you're three and two, then you beat the Eagles, you're four and two, you hold on in Denver, you're fight, like, how are these two?
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: Five and two, you know?
- 21:43[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: And then you take one on the channigan's fillet, but that doesn't mean his throat.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: San Francisco five and four.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: You hold on against Dallas or at Chicago, you're six and four going into this Packers game.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_01]: That, that to me is what cost Dave all is job.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I say ball is job is like
- 22:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's just how many times can you say we're close, we're close, we're close, just stick with us.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: You eventually guess the point where you can't, and I think Dave all's like a good coach.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think he could be successful if he gets another shot, you know what I mean?
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: Like I do, like I'm not, I'm not out on Brian, Dave all that way, but like I also understand like ownership looking at this and saying like,
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's just, there's, there's no way that we can trust that this is going to result in some sort of great conclusion when we went through the exact same thing the last two years, right?
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: Um, let's get to candidates because I think that this is, and you know, you'll connor or candidate less than, you know, so made a couple calls right in the immediate aftermath of that and it's funny right because you.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_00]: We've done this three times this year.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: If you count the GM search in Miami, we're all of a sudden something happens, and then you start reaching out, and you're like, okay, what do you think about this guy?
- 23:08[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think about this?
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think about that?
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, and so I think that this is going to be a wide search, I think initially with the giants, though,
- 23:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to lean toward familiarity in one way or another.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: And that could be, would you know, if you were them?
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: Because that had been their problem forever, right?
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: So, but then that was the line of thinking that got you Joe Shane and Brian Dayblatt's first place is we're going to cast a wide man, we're going to get out of here, we're going to we're going to change our formula.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know how they're feeling about that,
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: On one side, you have the Steve Spagnolo's of the world who have been an intern head coach or beloved there.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_00]: You want to superbowl with the giants.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: And you have Antonio Pierce who, you know, and that name was put on my plate.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: These are not, you know, these are not guys that I'm saying are going to be good giants at coaches.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: But doesn't his job with the Raiders look a little bit better now that Pete Carrell and Tom Brady and Chip Kelly and Gino Smith are f in the same thing up over there, right?
- 24:13[SPEAKER_00]: I mean,
- 24:18[SPEAKER_00]: Antonio Pierce there on the flip side one person that I talked to in the coaching industry said that this is going to be the strangest
- 24:27[SPEAKER_01]: head coaching cycle in a long time because what do we not have a lot of very obvious offensive minded play calling coordinators ready to make this I did this exercise done two different shows yesterday so like I feel every year there's like one or two guys where you can say yeah he's getting a job like I don't know how many jobs are going to be open I don't know what jobs are going to be open
- 24:51[SPEAKER_01]: But that guy's getting a job, right?
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think there were two last year.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like I think Ben Johnson might frame all of both in that category, right?
- 24:57[SPEAKER_01]: But what we could say, like, I don't know where he's going.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how it's going to happen.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: But he's going to be a head coach, right?
- 25:05[SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't think of one this year.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: Is there one?
- 25:09[SPEAKER_01]: Where you could say, like, that guy's a lock.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: No, there's not, and it's not just this time of year, I think it's just very generally like, you know, Clint Kubiak, for example, is an explosive playhunting coach with a great lineage, is he gonna be able to walk in to an interview and absolutely shake the tree down and make an owner say, here take my money.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, I don't know the answer to that question.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and so the reason that I bring that up, I mean, Kubiak would you disagree is probably, in terms of your like hot coordinator archetype, because the founders are having a down season and Cliff King's Barry is going to be selective about his net next head coaching, uh, venture that you would say that it's probably Kubiak in terms of like all the, all the fan base is saying, I want that guy because I want my offense to look like that.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that's I just don't know that he's at that point yet I agree, you know, but like I and I like Clint a lot like Clint, Clint's one of these guys, too, like he's like his dad.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: He's a very understated personality.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, we can gamble coming in, you know.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: He's very comfortable in his own skin, he's a very good football coach, like what I appreciate most about him is like he is a guy who will go back and look at like his mistakes and clean them up and like he's humble that way like I think after what happened in New Orleans last year He took a really hard look in the mirror and himself and like okay like what went wrong here and I think he's applied like the lessons to see atle.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_01]: Those are all great things, you know.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: If, but if you're looking for somebody who's going to come in and kick the door down and win the interview, that's probably not him.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like, so you have to be kind of like comfortable with his personality, which is a little bit more understated.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: And again, his dad won that way.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so it's not like, you know, that's, it's not like something like, oh, yeah, this is a natural or weird.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's just who he is.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: Half Lee's interesting.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: Like Jeff Haffling and Green Bay, I think is an interesting name.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: If they continue to play well, defensively, I think team's success plays into that.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: The one thing I would say about this in general, that I think is important, at least as I see it.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's really important to look at the giant's past history, but some eye understanding is they're going to look in every bucket on this, right, like they're not.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think part of that is, like, they've struck out what just about everything.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_01]: They had the young, rising offensive-minded, quarterback-centric coach, and then knackety-fired him.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: They brought in the retread, like guy with quarterback back around, experienced, well, of Warren from his lessons, mature, Pat Schermer, fired him after two years, brought in like the proverbial program leader, like the CEO, like, okay, like this is the special teams coach who has his hands and all fasts of the team fired him in two years.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: then they go back to the offensive well with Dave ball and that doesn't work so like I I think the idea here isn't just like okay, like let's figure out like what type of coach usually works out and then go there I think it's let's can't cast a wide net and find the right guy in the right fit for us and you know I
- 28:32[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, they're a great success in the matter as defense.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: They're a great success to come with guys that they knew.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Tom often in Bill Parcells, Bill Parcells was promoted from within, and then Tom Kaufland had been in a system under Parcells, or to become the coach at BC, want to become the coach at Jacksonville, then came back.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I don't know if there's a name out there.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Spags would probably be the closest to that, right?
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_00]: Choosing work boots used to mean sacrificing comfort or durability.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: If they felt good, they didn't last.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: And if they lasted, they wrecked your feet.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_00]: Brunt thought that was BS.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_00]: So they built tough boots that feel great from day one.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_00]: No breaking, no sore feet, because people out there doing real work shouldn't have to choose between comfort and durability.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_00]: Now I got the Marin boots, and not only do they look great, like I've worn them to, I've worn them to church, I've worn them out on the town, I've worn them out to dinner, and I've also worn them in the yard.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm raking leaves and I'm fixing my wall doing a little bit of stone work, whatever it is.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_00]: These are no doubt the most comfortable work boots I've ever worn and they're built to perform.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: Whether you need waterproof, safety toast, soft toe, pull on, lace up.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: They've got options that can handle whatever jobs that you're walking into.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_00]: And brunch stands behind what they make.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_00]: You can wear them to work, and if they're not right for you, send them back.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know any other brand doing that.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: That's a company that believes in their product.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_00]: Brunt isn't just about work boots.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_00]: They offer a full range of high-performance skier built for tough jobs, from heavy duty workpants to weather resistant jackets, brunt designs durable, reliable workwear.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: to keep you protected and productive in any condition.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: Brent was tired of the workware brands out there cutting corners.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: You work too hard to be stuck in uncomfortable boots that don't hold up, so they built something better.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: Boots that are insanely comfortable and built for any job site.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: And for a limited time, our listeners can get $10 off at Brent when you use code MMQB at checkout.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_00]: just head to bruntworkware.com and use the code MMQB and you're good to go.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: And after you order, they'll ask where you heard about brunt.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_00]: Do you us a favor and tell them?
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: It was from this show.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_00]: Jeff Haffley is an interesting one that you bring up because uh, where did Jeff Haffley coach before he came to Green Bay?
- 30:51[SPEAKER_00]: was a boss in college and where it is like 90% of the giants building where to 90% of the people who are there just go to college.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, where did Tom, friends, friends who went to boss in college, I'm from up here that no, Mara, they know the Mara is because of boss in college, for sure.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: And so there's certainly a connection there.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think that Mike Elco got put on my radar, which is interesting because Mike Elco is a head coach at Texas A&M and Marcus Freeman too.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_00]: The giants have a lot of Notre Dame ties.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of Notre Dame people in high positions.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_00]: There you go.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that Marcus Freeman is someone that they're gonna look at, but Mike Elco is interesting because where was Mike Elco before Texas A&M?
- 31:32[SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember?
- 31:32[SPEAKER_00]: He was a head coach at Duke, right?
- 31:34[SPEAKER_00]: And he,
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: Followed the, I don't know if it was a firing or a retirement or whatever, if I call just David Cutt Cliff, who coach not only Daniel Jones, what are you I'm getting, you know, and Peyton Manning and so I think that there's a lot of there there.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_00]: So, I think this is going to be an interesting search if I had to say, I think it's going to be boiled down to, like you said, I think half Lee is a name to watch very early.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think Spagnolo's certainly a name if he can come in with a good offensive coordinator and a plan on that side of the ball.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_00]: but I wouldn't be surprised if this team swings for the fence as college coaches are back.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't think that anybody has any choice, Albert, because the covered, like we said, it's dry.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: And so we're the lane train, the pulling into.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: Hi.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_00]: I cannot imagine somebody
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: just being less of the mayor's thing than lane.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_01]: I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't think of anybody who would be like, less of a fit for the way that organization carries itself.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_01]: But he's a really good coach.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_01]: Like he did and he does know your quarterback, of course.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, he has been through a lot, like, I don't know.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, I look at those guys, you know, then, like,
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: I love, well, I love the idea of floor is there, but is that to, like, so floor is just got bell to check back around sort of a day ball and judge, I can't you not do it again, you know what I mean, right, and I don't know.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_00]: Or when I rebel, check himself and say, well, so I'm going to get to that in one second.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_00]: That's a good word, Nick Sabin.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would be remiss to say that I can imagine Louie and a remote also being a leader in the club in this.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: And it was on my list.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_00]: Lou's son works there as a pro scout.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's a stat nylon guy.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_00]: He's the northeast guy, the giants, really liked him the last time when they hired Brian Dable.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_00]: He goes from scapegoat and Cincinnati to turning around that cult's defense.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: He might fit that parcellan vibe that I think that they may be trying to conge her.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: He's tough guy.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_00]: He's at acquired taste personally, but he'll have that defense ripping and I think a lot of that is
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: is what the giants feel like.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, here's where most of our resources go.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: And let's say you did that.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_00]: That would allow you to keep Kafka on as your offensive coordinator.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like if it works out in the end.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: And it might not.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_00]: But you brought up Bill and like
- 34:21[SPEAKER_00]: You said I said I put Bill on my list.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like I say for entertainment purposes lane would be awesome Bill would be incredible for entertainment purposes.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean for for us It would be like 10 Christmas is all put together But I don't think Bill has any shot this I think that from a personal standpoint He's really took a sledgehammer to his own brand.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think everything that's come out on him since then
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: has made teams wary of of going down that road.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: Do you hate the idea of saving?
- 34:56[SPEAKER_00]: I don't hate the idea of saving.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_00]: No, I don't.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: They really, there was a point in the 90s where they almost hired him.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you know about this because you're, you know, probably playing with like, whatever.
- 35:11[SPEAKER_01]: But when he was at when he was at Michigan State I remember there was a point where the giant swooped in and it looked like they were going to hire him from there
- 35:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think part of it had to do with the Giants tie as to Bella check, but so that was that would've been at some point in the late 90s, you can look it up.
- 35:30[SPEAKER_01]: But I think they came close to hiring him and maybe when they hired, when they hired fossil.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: And like if you talk about somebody setting up a program and somebody who could probably put like a good coach in waiting in place and stabilize the organization,
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's for the phone call, I think, right?
- 35:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's worth the phone call.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_01]: And can you imagine if the Jared, or maybe you're just having a conversation with him about other candidates, you know what I mean?
- 36:04[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't, I don't know.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_01]: He knows a lot of these guys, you know what I mean?
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: Like, so he does, he's up on this and say, but he's not like, then I mean, day ball and table and judge, we're also both saving guys.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: They weren't just bell, check guys.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_01]: They're also both saving guys.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_00]: Could you imagine if Balochek pulled a chip Calle and came to the Giants as Nick Sabin's defensive coordinator?
- 36:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, be great.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: That'll be.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: Again, for entertainment purposes, that'll be helpful.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_00]: I would think about quitting my job and just covering the Giants for like a made-up.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_00]: Like I would make up a website and just get a credential and cover the Giants every day.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: I really may.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's been handling what's signed off on it.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: Is Ham on a big or a guy?
- 36:48[SPEAKER_00]: I love Pat.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_00]: Pat is a giant director of communications a legend around the league.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_00]: One of the true greats.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I'd have to butter him up a little bit.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not going to lie.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_00]: Or football.com would be a tough sell.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think in this modern media landscape.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_00]: But then again, these teams will credential anybody.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes you'll see it.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_00]: You do.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_00]: Some don't.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: Some do.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_00]: Some don't.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: That's true.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_00]: So, that's kind of where we're at on this Albert.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, you know, it's very early on in the process, but I do think they'll cast a wide net.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_00]: I do think Marcus Freeman is a name that I would watch.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_00]: I do think that he would leave Notre Dame.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that he's necessarily cemented there, even though they love him, and they think that he's doing a really good job.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: They almost, they were kind of second place in the Matt rule sweepstakes.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: The last time he came out in New York, Carolina.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: So there's that to keep in mind, that was something that nearly happened.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's out of their range of curiosity at this point to bring in a college coach.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_00]: But regardless, we'll see how my Kafka does here.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's got a little runway.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_00]: Anything can happen.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_00]: And especially if you're going to keep a GM.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I should mention also that a rising young assistant coach who was very popular in Joe shame as an executive in Miami was Vance Joseph.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_00]: So that's just something to put in the Broncos came back and, you know, ended up waxing the giants and Denver.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: They had got a front row seat to that as well as Broncos offensive coordinator, even though he doesn't call plays as Davis Web and other guy who was, um,
- 38:25[SPEAKER_00]: drafted by the giants.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: So some of they know well there now might be a little early for Davis.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think he would be the youngest head coach and NFL history.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_01]: If he was hired this year, but David's web is the offensive coordinator and coach and waiting.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_00]: go like that.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_00]: I do like that.
- 38:44[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the last time the giants did a coach in waiting, it was Ben Macadoo.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_00]: It was not a good situation.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_00]: And it was not popular.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_00]: And Tom Coffland always did the thing where, and you and I made this joke forever when Ben got the job kept coming in and using the elliptical, even though his keycard had long expired.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_00]: So you set yourself up for a situation like that.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: If, uh,
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: if that's the route that you, if that's the route that you choose.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_00]: Before we get out of here, we're doing something so obviously it's sports illustrated.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_00]: We are a subsidiary of the sports illustrated print magazine, which, you know, guys, if you're not subscribed to, you need to be.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_00]: And when there's an NFL story in the mag, we're going to talk about it a little bit, just to kind of motivate you guys to go out, seek it out, find it on book shelves, bookstores, Barnes and Noble, I still have a tobacco shop around the corner for my house.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_00]: that that actually, yeah, tobacco shop that has like 10 copies every Thursday when it hits new stance and I love that.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: I go, I mean, I get it.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_00]: I'm obviously a subscriber to SI done from the plant is a legend and will send me copies whenever I need it.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_00]: But I'll always go and buy three from the tobacco shop because I'm like God bless you for still stalking like he's got the big thing of the New York Times and the Bergen record and
- 40:04[SPEAKER_00]: the star ledger when it used to be in print and he's got, you know, GQ and S choir and sports illustrated and I'm never going to stop doing that.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I love that.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_00]: This month's cover story is on the special teams revolution, great headline from our brain trust their kickbait, is what's on the cover.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: And it's, the photo is of that monumental.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: Good headline, it is a great headline.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: That monumental kick block that was returned for a touchdown in Philly.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I wanted to,
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'll bridge the gap between the two discussions with this because one name that I almost put on the giants head coaching lists and I didn't and the giants were the last team to hire a special team's coordinator.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_00]: But one name that I almost put on the list and I didn't but he will be on my head coaching list in my top 25 that comes out in a couple weeks is Frank Ross from the Houston Texans and I talked to Frank for this story and one of the things that Frank and I talked about
- 41:08[SPEAKER_00]: This is a more complex and complicated arena than ever before and you're seeing the coaches who are excelling at it right away and those are good coaches period, right?
- 41:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like the coaches in Caroline or the coaches in Houston, the coaches in Philly, right?
- 41:25[SPEAKER_00]: The coaches in Minnesota, guys who
- 41:28[SPEAKER_00]: were really good at the new special teams format immediately.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: And that means that it's not just that you're a good special team's coach, but you're good at anticipating.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_00]: You're good at planning.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think that this could have some pretty large scale ramifications when we're talking about an increase in kick blocks returns.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_00]: All that kind of stuff.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, special teams is a true third phase right now.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's no question.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I, you know, I'll give the league some credit.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: They did want to make shit.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like, and they, it wasn't so much that they wanted to save that area of the game.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that the league office cared that much about it.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_01]: But I, I give the special teams coaches themselves credit for being creative and proactive and going after it and like, okay, like, how can we help fix this in a way that's going to go appease?
- 42:13[SPEAKER_01]: But we got office the owners and you know, like I think guys like Darren Rizzi and John Fossil and Richard high tower, you know, Joe judge before he left before he left the league, you went back to college like there have been a handful of guys that have been really involved, you know, the grassroots level on like, okay, like, how do we fix this john harbottisers cry it right.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_01]: because he kind of like championed the effort to the special teams' coaches.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think that's one thing that's so interesting about it too, is like you have these guys who are really good football coaches who obviously had a vested interest in that area of the game surviving, you know, in making it out the other side, and how do we make these plays competitive and safe, you know?
- 42:54[SPEAKER_01]: So you've seen the innovation with the extra point, now you're seeing the innovation with the kickoff,
- 43:00[SPEAKER_01]: I I'm like a huge pierist when it comes to that stuff.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think the foot should be in the game.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think there that third phase is a important piece of football.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm glad to see that, like, you know, we're seeing a little bit of a sense when it comes to plays and that's as of all.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_00]: Roger Cadell said it when he was in London that.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: uh, sometimes when you fix something, you break other stuff in the process, because someone was asking about the increase in blocks and the increase in all that other stuff.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_00]: But with the NFL, and you hate to give them too much credit for being 3D chess players, but I think that the the error in this case is a massive benefit because kick blocks are good.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_00]: Kick blocks are really good for the NFL.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you used to run to the bathroom right when an extra point was was coming up.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_00]: You can't anymore.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_00]: It has such an outstanding impact on over the course of the game that you can't misapplate now.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I really do think to their credit, that is the ultimate victory in all this.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_00]: For sure.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_00]: For sure.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_00]: Where do you think this goes?
- 44:11[SPEAKER_00]: Because it was funny.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like, and talking to a bunch of coaches for this story, they're like, well, you know, the increase in blocks.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, it's happening in high profile situations.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's not really a total increase.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see at the end of the year.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like there's gonna be an increase.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_00]: There's gonna be an increase in blocks.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: There's like a 75% increase in returns.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're seeing not go ball kicks for seeing all sorts of stuff and I think we're going to see more that in the coming weeks and I write about that in the story But Where do you think this goes because for example, we're heading into the winter months now It's freezing cold here the ball's going to start doing different stuff with a different wind right different air I mean Special teams could come to define the playoffs I mean that was that was like one of the things that I you know, I think a lot of a lot of
- 44:56[SPEAKER_01]: coaches I talked to like when they were doing the new kickoff rules had mentioned was like the skill of being able to put the ball where you want to put it right not just kick it through the ends don't put the ball where you want to put it and then do it when there's weather and so you know I think the value of a great kicker could be increased as we get closer to the playoffs as the weather gets worse in certain places and
- 45:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like I think teams are going to have to be innovative that are in warmer weather spots that are going to have to be innovative and preparing their kickers for those things, you know, so that's part of it, you know, and I think that there's like always a cat now scheme with all of this, but I would say like the bigger impacts probably when we get to the off season.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_01]: And does this change the value of certain kickers?
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: Does this change the value of returnmen?
- 45:44[SPEAKER_01]: Does this change the value of a draft prospect, like let's say you're a great corner or receiver, and you also bring return value.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: You can not help to be a tiebreaker now, and who's the first second corner off the board.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think all of those things,
- 46:01[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think all of those things are definitely in play, you know, and that makes this story like really rich.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm sorry, Connor, I haven't read it yet, but I can't wait to get around to doing that.
- 46:15[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's not, it's going to be, it's not online until tomorrow, and that's the same day that it hits new stands.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_00]: So you're listening to this podcast, and you're not already
- 46:30[SPEAKER_00]: deals on this thing are incredible.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's so well worth your time.

- 46:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's gonna have a major impact on the end of the season.
- 46:45[SPEAKER_00]: And like the giant sick hoaching surge, something we're not done talking about.
- 46:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is gonna come up.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_00]: Time and time again, throughout the rest of the season.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_00]: And with that, Albert, let's bid the audience a due.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll see everybody on Sunday for a packed slate of games.
