- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his Word, and show His love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James chapter 2 and verses 14 through 26, and we
- 0:23are continuing in a similar thought as we've been working in
- 0:26the past couple of episodes, and that is James, pastor of the
- 0:30church in Jerusalem. He is writing to people that
- 0:33were once a part of his congregation, now scattered
- 0:35throughout the Roman Empire. They are struggling with
- 0:38favoritism in their churches that they are esteeming and
- 0:43doing special things for the rich and specifically like
- 0:47neglecting and putting down those that are poor.
- 0:52And so as James is talking through, he's saying this is
- 0:55sin. This is breaking the law.
- 0:58And you might say, OK, well, you know, I haven't committed
- 1:00adultery. I haven't killed anyone.
- 1:02Is this really that big of a deal if I'm extra nice to a rich
- 1:06person and I'm, you know, extra dismissive of a poor person?
- 1:10And James says, yeah, you break one part of the law, you have
- 1:14broken the whole thing. It's all 1 collected tapestry
- 1:18and to break 1 portion is to have broken all of the law.
- 1:24So then verse 14, he goes one step further to say when you
- 1:30have a dismissiveness to obeying the commands of God and you
- 1:39claim that because you believe in Jesus, it's all OK and your
- 1:45actions don't really matter so long as you believe in Jesus.
- 1:51We're going to see that James says no, you should definitely
- 1:54doubt that the kind of belief quote UN quote that you have in
- 1:59Jesus is the real thing. And I, I, I won't go too far
- 2:03into it. I love this passage.
- 2:05It's so good, so good. All right, verse 14, What good
- 2:08is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith
- 2:13but does not have works, can such faith save him?
- 2:17If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily
- 2:21food and one of you says to them go in peace, stay warm and be
- 2:26well fed, but but you don't give them what the body needs, what
- 2:30good is it? In the same way faith, if it
- 2:33does not have works, is dead by itself.
- 2:37But someone will say you have faith and I have works.
- 2:42Show me your faith without works and I will show you faith by my
- 2:48works. You believe that God is 1 good.
- 2:52Even the demons believe, and they shudder.
- 2:55Senseless person. Are you willing to learn that
- 2:58faith without works is useless? Wasn't Abraham, our father,
- 3:03justified by works in offering Isaac his son on the altar?
- 3:08You see that faith was active together with his works, and by
- 3:13works faith was made complete, mature, whole, and the Scripture
- 3:19was fulfilled. That says Abraham believed God
- 3:23and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called
- 3:27God's friend. You see that a person is
- 3:31justified by works and not by faith alone.
- 3:35In the same way, wasn't Rahab the prostitute also justified by
- 3:40works in receiving the messengers and sending them out
- 3:44by a different route? For just as the body without the
- 3:48Spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
- 3:55All right, so I want to clear up one thing at the very beginning.
- 4:00James is not preaching a different gospel than the gospel
- 4:05that John and Paul preached. He's preaching the exact same
- 4:08gospel. Our, our salvation is found in
- 4:13Jesus. Now here is what James is
- 4:16saying. I grew up and, and this could
- 4:21just be a, a particular oddity of a couple of the, the places
- 4:28that I was around growing up around, you know, particular
- 4:30conferences or Bible colleges or, or things like that.
- 4:34And, and the phrasing went like this.
- 4:37If you pray a prayer and you're really sincere, when you pray a
- 4:42prayer, at any point in your life, you could be a three-year
- 4:45old. And if you can get the words out
- 4:47and you can pray this prayer, then you are saved always and
- 4:53forever. And it doesn't matter.
- 4:55If you then become an atheist 5/10/15, thirty years later, it
- 5:01it doesn't matter if you, you know, reject Jesus at some point
- 5:06afterwards and and you embrace Judaism or Buddhism or just
- 5:11exercise no religion, no faith in God at all.
- 5:15You are still saved because you prayed that prayer when you were
- 5:18three or four or you prayed that prayer and you got baptized when
- 5:22you were 13 or 14. And a real faith is found in
- 5:27this prayer that you pray. Nothing could be further from
- 5:32the truth that we find expressed in Scripture.
- 5:34If you have any questions about that, go to the book of Hebrews,
- 5:37the book immediately preceding James, where we are told like
- 5:40yes, there were people that were once a part of this local
- 5:44congregation that you guys are in, but they have now rejected
- 5:49Jesus. They are no longer walking with
- 5:51him. They no longer repent and
- 5:53believe. And as a result, you can know
- 5:56they are not Christians. There is no salvation found
- 6:00outside of repentance and belief in Jesus.
- 6:03James then looks at OK, well, what does belief in Jesus look
- 6:07like? Belief in Jesus is not the it's
- 6:13not the result of your works. So you don't work enough and
- 6:18then you're able to have salvation, but your works are
- 6:22the fruit of a real salvific experience with Jesus in your
- 6:29heart. That is, your works are the
- 6:33fruit that will show up. They are not the root.
- 6:36The root is belief in Jesus. But when you have a life and a
- 6:41person that claims to have the root but has no fruit, there
- 6:47should be doubt. In that instance, that person
- 6:50looking at their own life should be concerned to say, Oh yeah, I
- 6:55like believe Jesus existed and that he did all this stuff for
- 6:59me and that he's coming back. But it is not motivating me to
- 7:03love other people. It's not motivating me to share
- 7:07my faith. And however that looks in my
- 7:09life with other people, it's not motivating me to have a love for
- 7:14God's church or for God's people.
- 7:17None of the things that are supposed to be coming out of my
- 7:20life are coming out of my life. And it's not a here James does
- 7:25not say if you struggle with sin and and you're fighting against
- 7:28sin, you're, you know, that kind of faith can't save you if
- 7:32you're struggling with sin or if you have doubts.
- 7:34That's not what he's saying at all.
- 7:36And in fact, as we would look at the rest of the Scripture, Paul
- 7:40would actually say the opposite. Romans 7 Paul would in essence
- 7:45kind of say this. I am fighting against my old sin
- 7:49nature that wants to crawl up from the grave and still try and
- 7:53like rule my life. He says, but I don't want to do
- 7:57that. And sometimes, like it makes me
- 7:58do things I don't want to do and the things that I do want to do
- 8:01the good, sometimes it stops me from doing that.
- 8:04But then he says, God, thank you for the victory that is found in
- 8:08Jesus, not in me, not my accomplishments, but in Christ.
- 8:12So Paul says struggling with sin is not the litmus test for if
- 8:19you are a Christian, the absence of good works, the absence of
- 8:24love, the absence of any care for other people is a giant
- 8:31flashing red sign, a warning sign in your heart that would
- 8:36say you need to take a look at your life and and really assess
- 8:43whether or not you have repented of sin and turn in faith to
- 8:48Jesus. Here the first part is if
- 8:52someone claims to have faith and does not have work, so they say
- 8:56I believe in Jesus, but it is not backed up by any love or
- 8:59care for another person. And James says, can such faith
- 9:04save him? Can this type of belief save a
- 9:07person a a, a faith that does not result in any fruit or any
- 9:12renewed life or love? Then it gives a practical
- 9:16example. If your Christian brother or
- 9:18sister comes to you and they, you know, it's winter time and
- 9:23they don't have the clothing that they need and they don't
- 9:25even have enough food to be able to to eat for the day.
- 9:31And you tell them like, oh, go in peace, stay warm and be fed.
- 9:35You just have like this, you know, nice cheesy smile.
- 9:38You're, you're giving. Oh God bless you.
- 9:40God take care of you and James says, but you don't actually
- 9:45give them clothing or food. It does nothing for anyone.
- 9:49It doesn't benefit you. It doesn't benefit them.
- 9:51It doesn't benefit the name of Jesus.
- 9:53And verse 17, he says in the same way, faith, if it does not
- 9:56have works, is dead by itself. The kind of faith that can say,
- 10:01Oh yeah, I believe in Jesus, I believe in God, and then it does
- 10:05not result in love. That's not a real faith, Jesus
- 10:09said. By this will all people know
- 10:11that you are my disciples. If you have love for one
- 10:15another, you have that whole section in first John three and
- 10:21four that we went over not too long ago.
- 10:23All of that is directly applicable here.
- 10:26This is the same thing John was encountering in the churches
- 10:29that he was writing to. And so they encourage us.
- 10:32Real faith loves others. Real faith cares for others.
- 10:38Verse #18 But someone will say you have faith and I have works.
- 10:44Show me your faith without works and I will show you faith by my
- 10:49works. He says my works aren't the
- 10:51basis of my salvation, but they are the the proof in the pudding
- 10:56of my salvation. This is what we read a long time
- 10:59ago in Second Peter chapter one, that we are to add to our faith.
- 11:03Virtue and a virtue, Knowledge and knowledge.
- 11:05Temperance and the temperance. Patience and the patience,
- 11:07brothers, really. Kindness and a brotherly
- 11:09kindness. Charity.
- 11:10For if these things be in you and abound, they will make it so
- 11:13that you are neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of
- 11:18Jesus Christ. But the one who has neglected
- 11:20these things has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
- 11:25One of the greatest proofs in our life as we're questioning
- 11:30like, hey, if I really repented and believed in Jesus, for a lot
- 11:34of us the question is not do I believe in Jesus?
- 11:36It's have I repented of my sin and turned to Jesus, if you
- 11:41will, in the kind of Romans 10 phrasing of it, that if we
- 11:46confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, the Jesus part is
- 11:51easy for a lot of people, especially here in America,
- 11:54being a Christian, you know, we've got like about 60% of the
- 11:56population claims in one way or another to be a Christian in
- 12:01whatever sect that might be or, or or denomination or in some
- 12:06instances cult. The Jesus part is pretty easy
- 12:09for us. But the Jesus is Lord portion is
- 12:14the difficult part that a lot of people don't think about.
- 12:17And it even in the like prayer of OK, Jesus, will you come and
- 12:21save me? A lot of times there's not a
- 12:24recognition of OK, this, this means he's in charge now.
- 12:28And if he really is in charge, then it's going to bring out
- 12:32fruit that the Holy Spirit builds out of my life.
- 12:36It's the fruit of the Spirit is Lovejoy, peace, patience,
- 12:39long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness,
- 12:41temperance. And because it's the fruit of
- 12:43the Spirit, not the fruit of your will, it's something that
- 12:47God does in and through you. And so if you don't see that
- 12:51fruit, if you don't have that pull, that impetus towards love
- 12:55and care for another person, then you can know like, hey,
- 12:59this isn't just me needing to like buckle down and do more.
- 13:03I need to go to the Lord and say, Jesus, I know you exist,
- 13:09but I want to make you my Lord. I want to repent.
- 13:11I don't want to live this way anymore.
- 13:13I don't want to live governed by my opinion and my way.
- 13:18I want to be governed by your love.
- 13:20And as we turn in faith and call on him to save us and we truly
- 13:25acknowledge him as our Lord, our our Master, the one that we're
- 13:28turning to, to tell us what to do, man, there is salvation
- 13:33found in that. For the person here that has
- 13:36faith, they have belief in Jesus, but they have no
- 13:39repentance. They have no love and care for
- 13:41others. The goal is not that you would
- 13:44be like, OK, well, I guess I'm just, you know, if you will,
- 13:47damned to hell and there's no salvation for me.
- 13:49No, today, if you will hear his voice, today is the day of
- 13:53salvation. And you can experience that.
- 13:58So works show our faith verse 19 you believe that God is 1 So
- 14:06that's the Shema in ancient Israel Deuteronomy sakes hear O
- 14:09Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is 1.
- 14:13So he says you believe that God is 1 good.
- 14:16Even the demons believe and they shudder.
- 14:20Even the like the the evil spiritual beings, the the
- 14:26demons, Satan, the the fallen ones, these ones know that God
- 14:32exists and they freak out when he comes around.
- 14:37They freak out when they interact with him.
- 14:38You can look at the demons responses every time Jesus comes
- 14:41like Oh no please don't send us to Tartars, don't send us to the
- 14:44pit. And I, I love those interactions
- 14:47because it just proves to me over and over again, Jesus is in
- 14:50control. But some of us, we interact with
- 14:54the living words of God in Scripture.
- 14:57And instead of us like shuddering, instead of us going,
- 15:01oh man, I gotta like change my behavior because God has an
- 15:05expectation for me that I need to follow through on.
- 15:08And instead of us operating in obedience, we operate in
- 15:11defiance and belligerence to say, yeah, I know he says that,
- 15:14but I would rather do this. I know the Bible says this about
- 15:19the church. The Bible says this about my
- 15:22sexual behaviors or my gender identity, or the Bible says this
- 15:26about how I view those that are, you know, immigrants.
- 15:32But I really think or so and so told me that this is the way I
- 15:37need to think about each of these things.
- 15:39And so I'm going to like listen to myself or I'm going to listen
- 15:42to humans rather than listen to God.
- 15:46And so James here says, don't just have a superficial belief
- 15:51in Jesus that he exists or that he did stuff.
- 15:54Respond in faith. Respond in obedient faith to
- 15:59God. And as we lay down our lives and
- 16:04our way, and as we embrace the love and care that Jesus had
- 16:07first for us and that he wants to extend through us to others,
- 16:11then we have a faith that works. We have a root of faith that is
- 16:15producing a fruit of works. And then he gives the 2 examples
- 16:21here, Abraham and Rahab. Abraham, he we read very early
- 16:28in the story in Genesis, I believe it was Genesis 16 or 17,
- 16:32that Abraham believed God when God told him, look at the stars
- 16:35in the sky, that's how many your offspring are going to be.
- 16:38And it says Abraham believed God and God credited it to him as
- 16:42righteousness. Abraham was a deeply imperfect
- 16:45man with flaw after flaw and failure after failure, but God
- 16:49did not write him off because of his failures.
- 16:53Instead, what we read, especially from that point on,
- 16:57Abraham begins to make some good choices.
- 16:59He has a care and a love for God and the couple of angels that
- 17:04come by his tent and he loves them, prepares food for them.
- 17:07He intercedes for Lot and for his family and for the cities of
- 17:11Sodom and Gomorrah. He eventually has some care for
- 17:16Abimelech and for his people that he prays for them.
- 17:18He has a love for Ishmael and for Hagar.
- 17:22He has a love for Isaac. All of these actions begin to
- 17:26build up that Abraham is operating in love.
- 17:29But what James here highlights is the like final Test of
- 17:34Abraham is when God tells him to offer Isaac and he says, do you
- 17:38love God or do you love yourself?
- 17:40Do you love your plans, your way or do you love God?
- 17:44And when Abraham like lifts the knife up in the air and the
- 17:49Angel says, hey, stop, don't harm the boy.
- 17:52Now I know that you love and fear God because you have not
- 17:57even withheld your only son from him.
- 17:59Obviously their picture of God the Father and Jesus that Jesus
- 18:03went through the death that God would not allow Isaac and
- 18:07Abraham to experience. So you have this this moment of
- 18:13proving Abrahams faith. Abraham had already believed at
- 18:18that point for like 6 chapters in our in our Bible today or or
- 18:22six, you know, narratives since then that Abraham had been
- 18:26actively believing God and operating in faith.
- 18:30So we know that God credited Abraham's belief has
- 18:33righteousness, but the belief was validated, proven or in
- 18:39God's phrase. Now I know, and in one sense now
- 18:43Abraham knew what he truly loved and followed as a result of the
- 18:48work that came out of Abraham's life in that moment, it proved
- 18:53what was inside. Same thing with Rahab, that she
- 18:58believed in God. We haven't gone over this yet.
- 19:00This is in Joshua too. Rahab, get some spies from
- 19:05Israel. They're spying out the city of
- 19:07Jericho. It's the first stop in the
- 19:09conquest of Canaan and they're being hunted by the the leaders,
- 19:16the officials, army of the city. She hides them in her house and
- 19:21she lets them know, like, hey, we're all freaked out.
- 19:24We've heard about what Yahweh has done over these past 40
- 19:27years and what he did to Egypt and what he did to the kings on
- 19:29the other side of the Jordan. And so she she says, when you
- 19:35guys come through, like, will you spare me and my family?
- 19:39Because I know that God has handed all of this over to you.
- 19:42And they're like, yeah, absolutely.
- 19:44Like, thank you so much. And so Rahab, she had a belief
- 19:49in God that was proven by her actions.
- 19:53It was a faith that worked as one person has put it.
- 19:58Faith alone saves, but a faith that saves is never alone.
- 20:06Faith alone saves. It's not of works, lest any man
- 20:09should boast. That's Ephesians 2.
- 20:10Not by works of righteousness that we have done.
- 20:13That's Titus 3/5. That there is none that does
- 20:17good. No, not one.
- 20:18We know that from Romans chapter 3.
- 20:20It's not human righteousness. So faith alone saves.
- 20:23But the faith that saves is never alone.
- 20:28And it's not that we no longer struggle with sin, but it is
- 20:31that we have that drive from the Holy Spirit towards doing good
- 20:35to and for others. And as we do that we can know,
- 20:39OK, God's presence is alive and real in me.
- 20:44And I know that this root of faith is producing the fruit of
- 20:49works. And verse 26 says he ends for
- 20:51just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith
- 20:56without works is dead. That a body if you have just a
- 21:01spirit and you have no body, well, that's a in the biblical
- 21:05mindset, this that's a ghost, that's a spirit.
- 21:07That's not something that's alive, but so you can't just
- 21:12have works without any faith because that's not living.
- 21:15But you have to have faith a body that is animated by your
- 21:22works. And so let us be people that
- 21:25love, that care, that do good works, that prove our belief by
- 21:31our actions. Let's have a provable faith
- 21:34today. Thanks for tuning in.
- 21:36Hope you have a wonderful day.
