- 0:02Welcome back to Unmasked, where we take off the filters and get
- 0:05real about faith, failure, and finding freedom.
- 0:09I'm your host, Wesley Farnsworth, a dad, veteran,
- 0:13author, and a man who has learned that often the hard way,
- 0:17God doesn't just work around our mess, he works through it.
- 0:20Today's episode is called Unmasking Self Sabotage, When
- 0:24Your greatest Enemy is in the Mirror, and I want to say this
- 0:28up front, gently, but clearly, this episode is not about shame
- 0:34and it's not about beating yourself up, and it's definitely
- 0:37not about blaming yourself for everything that's gone wrong.
- 0:40This is about awareness because you cannot heal what you refuse
- 0:45to see. See, there's often a quiet war
- 0:48within us. Most of us think of spiritual
- 0:51warfare as something external. We think of it as temptation,
- 0:57opposition attacks from the enemy.
- 1:00But one of the most dangerous battlegrounds is internal,
- 1:06because the enemy rarely needs to destroy us outright.
- 1:09He just needs to keep us stuck. He needs to keep us stuck in
- 1:13patterns, stuck in fear, stuck in delay, stuck in almost.
- 1:21And often. The tool that keeps us stuck
- 1:24isn't obvious sin, it's self sabotage.
- 1:29Self sabotage is the quiet agreement we make with fear
- 1:33while telling ourselves we're being wise.
- 1:35So what a self sabotage look like.
- 1:41I can tell you the self sabotage doesn't normally look dramatic.
- 1:45It looks like starting strong and slowly fading.
- 1:48Knowing what to do but never quite doing it.
- 1:52Getting close to healing and then backing away.
- 1:55Staying busy to avoid being honest.
- 1:59Saying someday instead of today. Do any of those resonate with
- 2:04you? It's a habit of interrupting
- 2:08your own progress. You don't blow everything up,
- 2:13you just never fully step in. And over time, that creates a
- 2:18life that feels spiritually frustrating because deep down,
- 2:22you know there's more. So why do we do this to
- 2:26ourselves? Let's slow down here for a
- 2:30minute because this matters most.
- 2:33People who self sabotage are not lazy, they're not unmotivated,
- 2:39they're not weak, they're not afraid.
- 2:43Fear of failure is one of the reasons that we do this to
- 2:46ourselves because failure threatens our sense of worth.
- 2:52If I try and fail, what does that say about me?
- 2:55If I step out and fall, will I confirm my worst fears?
- 3:00So instead of risking failure, we choose avoidance.
- 3:04But here's the truth, avoidance doesn't protect you, it slowly
- 3:10erodes your confidence. Another reason that we do this
- 3:16to ourselves is the fear of exposure.
- 3:20Healing requires honesty. Calling requires visibility, and
- 3:25visibility feels dangerous. If you've learned that being
- 3:30seen leads to rejection, judgment, or pain, then you stay
- 3:34guarded. You curate, you control the
- 3:38narrative, you stay safe, but not free.
- 3:44Another reason we may do this is the fear of success.
- 3:49This one is uncomfortable to admit because what if God
- 3:54actually changes me? What if I become someone new?
- 3:59What if I can't go back? Growth response.
- 4:04Growth demands responsibility, and responsibility means that
- 4:09you can't hide behind the old, and responsibility means that
- 4:14you can't hide behind the old excuses anymore.
- 4:18Sometimes we sabotage success because the success would
- 4:22require us to let go of the identities that we've used for
- 4:26so long to survive. Another reason we may do it is
- 4:31attachment to the old story. Even painful identities can feel
- 4:36familiar. The struggler, the one who's
- 4:40always behind, the one who needs help but never leads.
- 4:48Healing requires burying an old version of yourself, and
- 4:53resurrection always feels unsettling at first.
- 4:58The 5th and final reason that we may do this to ourself is
- 5:01waiting for perfection. We wait until we feel confident
- 5:06enough. We wait until we feel healed
- 5:09enough, until we feel disciplined enough or spiritual
- 5:13enough. The Scripture never shows God
- 5:17calling the ready. He calls the willing.
- 5:22Here's where it gets especially subtle, because spiritual self
- 5:27sabotage often hides behind the spiritual language.
- 5:31I'm just waiting on God. I'm still praying about it.
- 5:36I don't want to rush God's timing.
- 5:39And sometimes that's true. But sometimes, if we're honest,
- 5:44it's fear. Wearing a faith costume.
- 5:49God's timing is real, but delay rooted in fear is not obedience.
- 5:57Faith doesn't always wait. Sometimes faith moves well,
- 6:01trembling. And at some point there has to
- 6:06be a moment of clarity. If you haven't had it, it's
- 6:10coming. It's the moment when you look in
- 6:13the mirror, the moment when you realize I keep repeating the
- 6:18same cycles. I keep praying the same prayers.
- 6:22I keep asking God to change things while resisting change.
- 6:28This is not a moment of condemnation.
- 6:31It's a moment of invitation. Because the moment you stop
- 6:35blaming everything outside of you, you regain the power over
- 6:40what's within you. I've had seasons where I asked
- 6:45God for freedom but was still clinging the habits that kept me
- 6:48numb. Seasons when I prayed for
- 6:51purpose but I avoided the risk that that purpose required.
- 6:59I've had seasons where I wanted transformation, but only if it
- 7:03didn't disrupt my comfort. And God patiently but firmly
- 7:09kept bringing me back to one truth.
- 7:12And he said, Wes, I'm not holding you back.
- 7:15You are. That realization hurt, but it
- 7:20healed. How do you break the cycles of
- 7:26self sabotage? Let's talk about that for a
- 7:29moment. Let's talk about some things
- 7:32that actually help. The first thing that you can do
- 7:36to break the cycle of self sabotage is to name the pattern.
- 7:40See, self sabotage thrives in vagueness.
- 7:44So ask yourself, where do I consistently stop short?
- 7:48What excuses feel reasonable but repeat often?
- 7:52What step do I keep postponing? Naming the pattern breaks the
- 7:58power. Another thing that you can do to
- 8:02break the cycle of self sabotage is to identify the lie button
- 8:05beneath it. Self sabotage is usually
- 8:10protecting A belief. I'm not capable, I'll ruin it.
- 8:15I don't deserve better. But scripture says he who began
- 8:20a work good work in you, He who began a good work in you will be
- 8:25faithful to complete it. If God starts this work, he is
- 8:30not intimidated by your weakness.
- 8:36Another thing that we can do in the final thing to break the
- 8:40cycle of self sabotage is to take one brave step.
- 8:46I know you've heard me say this before.
- 8:47One step. I encourage you to do it often
- 8:51on this podcast. But take a brave step.
- 8:55Not a leap, not a full plan, just one step.
- 9:00Make the call, schedule the appointment, have the
- 9:04conversation, set the boundary. Movement disrupts stagnation.
- 9:14And when you're obedient, that changes everything.
- 9:20Because courage doesn't precede obedience, if follows it.
- 9:25Confidence is not a prerequisite, it's a by product.
- 9:30Every major shift in my life has started with a small
- 9:34uncomfortable, yes, not a bold, not confident, just honest.
- 9:41And God has met me every time, not with pressure, but with
- 9:45grace. If you're listening to this
- 9:49still and you're thinking this is me, I hear you.
- 9:54How did you know hear this? You're not listening to this by
- 10:01accident today, and you are not broken beyond repair.
- 10:07You are not lazy, and you are not feeling God.
- 10:12You're still learning. I'm still learning.
- 10:17And learning often begins with unlearning patterns that have
- 10:21once kept us safe. So I want to ask you a few
- 10:28questions to consider today as we wrap up, but I don't want you
- 10:34to rush past these. Take a moment, listen to them
- 10:38and contemplate them. Maybe write them down so that
- 10:41you can refer back to them. Are you ready?
- 10:47The first question is, where have I been getting in my own
- 10:50way? The second question, what fear
- 10:56has been driving my hesitation? The third question is what step
- 11:03has God been inviting me to take over and over again?
- 11:11And finally, what would it look like to say yes this time?
- 11:18Because God is not waiting for you to become fearless.
- 11:24He just wants you to become willing.
- 11:27He's waiting for you. The ball is in your court.
- 11:35You don't have to stop being afraid to move forward.
- 11:39You just have to stop letting the fear make decisions for you.
- 11:53Thanks for joining me today on Unmasked.
- 11:56If this episode spoke to you, would you take a moment and
- 12:00share it with somebody else who might need to hear it too?
- 12:04Until next time, remember that grace is greater than your past,
- 12:10and growth begins with honesty. And freedom starts when we stop
- 12:15hiding from God and from ourselves, and we choose to live
- 12:21unmasked. God bless you.
