- 0:00This is a sandy boy productions podcast.
- 0:17Hey, everybody. Welcome to all have another podcast
- 0:20with Lindsay He.
- 0:22I'm your host, Lindsay. Thank you so much
- 0:24for
- 0:25joining me today. I am really excited today
- 0:28to share with you an episode with Marissa
- 0:32Howard, who made her first Olympic team in
- 0:34the Steep chase.
- 0:35At the Olympic trials last week and wow,
- 0:38what a race?
- 0:41The race of her life really. She ran
- 0:43a 15 second personal record, 09:07.
- 0:47She totally skipped over.
- 0:49The 9 1.
- 0:51She went from 09:22
- 0:53to 09:07.
- 0:55Wow.
- 0:56Marissa is a mom. She has a... 2
- 0:59year old son, she was the only mother
- 1:00in that field. We talk about her
- 1:03life as a whole
- 1:05as a mother, a home,
- 1:07a
- 1:08professional athlete,
- 1:10a friend,
- 1:11a believer, a coach. 1 thing I love
- 1:14about Marisa story is
- 1:16the holistic view
- 1:18of her entire life that she takes with
- 1:20her when she trains and when she races.
- 1:23This isn't just about racing
- 1:26And I think she has a really healthy
- 1:28perspective. And for lack of a better term
- 1:31balance, 1 might say, I know that you
- 1:34can't always have complete balance in your life,
- 1:37but she seems to really look at her
- 1:40running.
- 1:41With a healthy perspective in a healthy lens.
- 1:44Marissa
- 1:45talks openly about her faith. We heard her
- 1:47talk about her faith and a lot of
- 1:49her post race interviews
- 1:51on the track. And so I
- 1:53was curious about that. So of course, asked
- 1:56her some questions
- 1:57that related to her faith and what that
- 1:59means to her. Marissa is someone I am
- 2:01so excited to cheer for and I'm so
- 2:03honored to be able to tell her story
- 2:05here on this podcast.

- 2:42Howard.
- 2:44Alright, friends.
- 2:45Excited for our... This our first post Olympic
- 2:49trials
- 2:49podcast interview, and we have
- 2:52Marissa Howard on the show. Welcome to the
- 2:54show, Marissa. Thank you. Thank you for having
- 2:56me. I haven't done a ton of podcast,
- 2:57so I think I'll be on a few
- 2:59more, leading up into the trials, but excited
- 3:01to be here.
- 3:02I'm so excited to have you on. It
- 3:04is
- 3:06really an honor when I saw your race.
- 3:09I was like,
- 3:10I have to have this woman on my
- 3:12podcast. There were so many exciting feelings, and
- 3:16I'm just pumped to have you here. How
- 3:18are you feeling? We are
- 3:20Gosh. 5 days. You, like, 4 days out.
- 3:23It's it's not been long. Yeah
- 3:25Yeah.
- 3:26We are feeling good. We got,
- 3:28a little illness right after Eugene, which is
- 3:31pretty typical coming off of big performance and
- 3:33getting, you know, not a lot of sleep,
- 3:35but a Finally,
- 3:36coming out of the fog and, starting to
- 3:39get back into training, and
- 3:41yeah, I don't think it's really hit me.
- 3:42I don't think it'll hit me until we
- 3:44kinda travel over to Paris, but
- 3:46very, very surreal. Yeah.
- 3:49Let's talk about that video of your family.
- 3:50That is the... I don't know who took
- 3:52it, but that is the best video. When
- 3:54you made the team and everybody's like screaming
- 3:56and jumping up and down is that your
- 3:58sister holding your son? Yeah. I can't remember
- 4:00if it was my sister or
- 4:02it might have been my sister while holding
- 4:04her baby. I think my husband had my
- 4:06son.
- 4:08But, yeah, I... Every time I watch it,
- 4:09I get teary eyed like, I
- 4:13you know, you
- 4:14you know how much they've invested as well.
- 4:16Right? You know, I, obviously, I've invested a
- 4:18lot, but I know they've...
- 4:19You know, invested so much as well. And,
- 4:22so just to see
- 4:23their emotion for me was just, yeah, just
- 4:26insane. And I love that somebody got to
- 4:28capture it. Like, I think my cousin... I
- 4:30think when of my cousins was recording, but,
- 4:32yeah, I get very emotional when I watched
- 4:34them.
- 4:35Right Like, thank god somebody recorded that. Like,
- 4:38that's gonna be something you'll never forget. You
- 4:40always told someone's in the corner like, oh,
- 4:42let me capture this memory.
- 4:44I know. I know.
- 4:46I think... The outside. I don't know what
- 4:48the name of... I think outside running or
- 4:50something was sitting right by them and so
- 4:52they were like, send us that video, and
- 4:54that's how it got. Kinda went viral. So
- 4:57Really cool. They were aaron and... Yeah. I
- 4:59told my mom I'm like, mom, you're going
- 5:00viral and she was like, oh, my gosh.
- 5:03Yeah So but looks so good. It seems
- 5:06like you're really close with your family.
- 5:08Yeah.
- 5:09My mom is 1 my best friends. I
- 5:11I chat with her every day.
- 5:13She... My dad and her moved, right after
- 5:17my son was born to be closer to
- 5:18us,
- 5:19just because they knew I was, you know,
- 5:21pursuing this Olympic dream and
- 5:23and so they they moved out here to
- 5:25help with my son. And
- 5:27yeah. It's been really, really sweet to have
- 5:29them in town, and then I have a
- 5:30brother and a sister, and
- 5:32Yeah. They're all coming over to Paris with
- 5:33us, which would be so exciting. So you...
- 5:35So you're in boise. And so you said
- 5:37your parents moved to you. Your in laws
- 5:39are also there?
- 5:40Yeah. So my in laws moved out when
- 5:42we were still dating, actually, right after we
- 5:44started dating,
- 5:45my mother lost her job in Spokane where
- 5:48my husband's from.
- 5:49And
- 5:51so they decided to look for jobs in
- 5:53Spokane Boise, and she got a job here
- 5:55and so they've been here,
- 5:57almost as long as I have about 14
- 5:58years, and then my parents moved out here
- 6:002 years ago. So we have tons of
- 6:02help with my son, which is so nice.
- 6:05It's amazing. And so you are in... Boise
- 6:08because that's where you went to school.
- 6:10Yeah. Yeah. And you just never left. Yeah.
- 6:12Went to school here. I mean, boys is
- 6:13an amazing place. It's kind of the best
- 6:16kept secret that's starting to get out. Now.
- 6:18We've had a lot of, people that have
- 6:19moved here in the last.
- 6:21Probably honestly since Covid in the last... Yeah.
- 6:234 or 5 years.
- 6:25But, yeah, I came to, call here in
- 6:2720 10.
- 6:28And then
- 6:29we never really planned on leaving honestly, after
- 6:31our in laws, you know, I got married
- 6:33in college and once our in laws were
- 6:34here, and then my best friend moved out
- 6:36right after,
- 6:38we graduated college. Like, all my people started
- 6:40coming out here. And so
- 6:43yeah, that we we decided to stay, and
- 6:45and then my coach, my coach actually just
- 6:47got the Boise State job. So
- 6:49now we're kind of here for good, now
- 6:51that he's in town as well, which is
- 6:52very nice. Yeah. You're locked in.
- 6:55Yes. Yeah. I heard you say,
- 6:58in 1 of your posters interviews that, you
- 7:00know, 1 of the things with sponsorship was
- 7:02that...
- 7:03You're not willing to move. Like, you want
- 7:05to stay in boise.
- 7:08And
- 7:09I love that you had this support from
- 7:11T smith. I also know that those tracks
- 7:14sponsorships are, like, mostly apparel and not like,
- 7:17these big huge
- 7:18sponsorships, but what did that mean to you
- 7:20to have their support? Yeah. They've been awesome,
- 7:23and they actually started supporting me when I
- 7:25was pregnant, which is really cool. They started...
- 7:27Kinda working with my club, Idaho a foot
- 7:29at that point, and they were, like, very
- 7:31excited to, like, Marissa, we can't wait until
- 7:33you're back out there and you know, they...
- 7:35Yeah. They've been really, really supportive And,
- 7:38Nick Willis is, like, the athlete,
- 7:40kinda athlete coordinator, and, you know, he wants
- 7:43us to get a big deal. Right? He
- 7:44wants us to, you know, move on to
- 7:47a bigger company,
- 7:48and he loves that they can be a
- 7:49stepping stone for that. And so
- 7:51obviously, after I made the team, he was,
- 7:53you know, very excited, and, you know, he's,
- 7:54like, I'm hopeful that now, you can... Yeah.
- 7:57Move on from us and and and they're,
- 7:58yeah, happy that they gotta be a part
- 8:00of the journey. Oh, that is so cool.
- 8:02I love that. I love that they want...
- 8:04They want you to be sent off. Yep.
- 8:07They want us to spread our wings and
- 8:08fly. Yeah.
- 8:09And I think that you... You know, they...
- 8:11Yeah. They did an amazing job at the
- 8:13trials. You know, they bring in chiropractors and
- 8:15they provide lunch every day. They provide housing.
- 8:18But that... I mean, that's everything you need.
- 8:19You know, and they provide a little bit
- 8:21a little bit of money.
- 8:23But, yeah, That's that's everything you need at
- 8:24the at that meat,
- 8:26unfortunately, other meats throughout the year. They're not
- 8:28able to help with as much, but I
- 8:30had everything I need at the trials to
- 8:31be successful, which which is awesome.
- 8:34Okay. Let's talk about that 15 second P
- 8:36r, which I know that is a question
- 8:38you're probably getting a lot that is... It
- 8:40wild and crazy. And when I think about
- 8:43these times,
- 8:45well, I was thinking about,
- 8:47after the 1500 meter race on Sunday, which
- 8:49I'm sure you I don't know if you
- 8:50watched because you were sick. Did you get
- 8:52to watch that? You watched the replay. Yeah.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:55Okay. Great.
- 8:56I was thinking about some of these women
- 8:58who were saying like, well, if you would
- 8:59have told me like this was the time
- 9:01we had to run or like, this was
- 9:03the time I would have to run and
- 9:04I still wouldn't make the team. Like, I
- 9:06would be all up in my head.
- 9:08So, like, did you... When you enter this
- 9:10race knowing what it might take to make
- 9:13the team in the steep? Like, did you
- 9:14even think about time? Or did you just
- 9:16think... I'm just gonna run my best race.
- 9:19Yeah. I think, you know, my my coach...
- 9:22He did such a good job of managing
- 9:23this week, and he said,
- 9:25don't come into this race with any pre
- 9:27about what the time is gonna be who's
- 9:29gonna make the team or anything like that.
- 9:31And I think that left it open to,
- 9:34you know,
- 9:35allow anything to happen.
- 9:38We knew, you know, he did tell me,
- 9:39like, this spring. Like, I'm gonna have you
- 9:42ready to run 09:10 and close hard. You
- 9:44know, that was kinda like, this the fitness
- 9:46that we knew we needed to be in.
- 9:49But I think I
- 9:51always
- 9:51race well when I don't know the time.
- 9:53All of my, like, big P and my
- 9:56big races
- 9:57where I've, like, done really well is generally
- 9:58when I'm just like, really locked in and
- 10:00focused and, like, just racing and not focused
- 10:02on the clock at all. I kinda don't
- 10:05do great in, like, scenarios where, like, a
- 10:06coach is reading out of split and, like,
- 10:08focused oh, you're off. You know, like, you
- 10:10guys are slowing and blah blah. So I...
- 10:13Yeah. I had no idea how fast we
- 10:15were running
- 10:16until we crossed the finish line. I mean,
- 10:17I had no clue that we were, like,
- 10:19cruise.
- 10:21Yeah. I was just so locked in, And
- 10:23they're... The cool part of that video of
- 10:24my families, You can... See my husband grabbing
- 10:26some shirt. And he was like, look at
- 10:28the clock. Look at he was freaking out
- 10:30and
- 10:31so that was really fun to watch it
- 10:33and yeah. Had no idea. Do that we
- 10:35were running that fast.
- 10:37Wow.
- 10:38What does your husband? Like, what does what
- 10:41is his involvement in the sport? Like, did
- 10:43he run in college? How did... How is...
- 10:45How much does he know about sport? Yes.
- 10:48So he ran in college. He was A5K
- 10:4910 k runner, and then we coach cross
- 10:52country high school track? Cross Country together here
- 10:54in town. So he's town coach. Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:58So we coach a local high school.
- 11:00So he's very involved in the sport. He
- 11:01probably knows too much But he does a
- 11:03really good job of taking on the husband
- 11:06role and not the coaching. Sometimes I'm, like,
- 11:09asking him for feedback and stuff, and he's,
- 11:10like, Marissa I'm your husband. Like, your coach
- 11:13is doing a amazing job, and and I'm
- 11:15hard on myself as, you know, as an
- 11:17athlete and as a coach and so He
- 11:19does a really good job of Y and
- 11:20that husband role, which is really, really sweet.
- 11:23The s felt really wide open. You know?
- 11:26Obviously, we knew that Courtney and Emma weren't...
- 11:28Running the race.
- 11:30You hate to see people injured, But did
- 11:32you feel like going into it? Like, this
- 11:34race is wide open, and I have a
- 11:37really great shot here.
- 11:39Yeah. I... The interesting thing is after... Yeah.
- 11:43After...
- 11:44Courtney, you know, obviously pulled out. I mean,
- 11:46just at Bummer. Right? And I know that's
- 11:48all part of Right.
- 11:50The sport,
- 11:52But, yeah, We really thought, you know, 8
- 11:54to 10 women had a a real shot,
- 11:56you know, 8 women had the Olympic standard.
- 11:58I think 2 or 3 more got it
- 11:59during the final. So I think we probably
- 12:02have... I don't know. Was that 11? I'm
- 12:04probably... I I don't know if I'm miss
- 12:0510 about 11 women with the Olympic standard
- 12:08in 1 year is... Wow. Insane. And so
- 12:11Yeah. I think
- 12:12we really felt like it was really wide
- 12:14open, and that's where my coach said, like,
- 12:16don't have any pre.
- 12:18Like, who's the best runner who's gonna make
- 12:20this team or whatever, and I think that
- 12:22allowed... Yeah, to... The... That allowed,
- 12:25me to just come in with, like, yeah.
- 12:27No
- 12:28no pressure, no pre ideas and just race
- 12:31and see yeah. Who could come out on
- 12:33top.
- 12:34What were you thinking when Annie wrote phelps
- 12:36like, took it out so hard? Yeah. I
- 12:40I know she mentioned this in her interview
- 12:41that she, like, really struggles with the hurdles.
- 12:43And so,
- 12:45I think,
- 12:47I guess I didn't know how fast she
- 12:49was going, but I I felt like, eventually
- 12:52we would likely reel her in slowly.
- 12:54I think, I know Courtney Wee said that
- 12:57she felt like that pace was just a
- 12:59little bit too aggressive. And so,
- 13:01I know Courtney has been in a lot
- 13:02of high level races. Between diamond leagues and
- 13:04worlds, and so I kinda trusted that she,
- 13:07you know, would do a good job of
- 13:08kinda reeling her back in. And so I
- 13:10think in my head, I knew we'd eventually
- 13:12you know, hopefully reel her back in, but
- 13:14it would have been phenomenal. Had she, you
- 13:16know, kinda wired job that.
- 13:18So, yeah, I I come commend her for,
- 13:20yeah, taking a shot at it.
- 13:22Yeah. That that, like, little stu step that
- 13:25she. And I think she probably just, like,
- 13:27didn't wanna cause a crash. I don't know
- 13:29how to say it crash.
- 13:32That 1. I know I know she 2
- 13:33foot lamps the water jump. And so I
- 13:36think... Yeah. I think I was just being
- 13:37aware of that and and making sure that
- 13:39I had a good line and and maybe
- 13:40it wasn't landing behind her. But she lands
- 13:43so quick and, like,
- 13:45I mean, she has it down. I know
- 13:46a lot of women don't do the 2
- 13:47foot landing, but When I was watching the
- 13:50race back, I'm like, man, she gets out
- 13:51of there very fast for being a 2
- 13:53foot lander. So...
- 13:55Yeah. Yeah. She really has hasn't it figured
- 13:57out.
- 13:58At that last jump when Olivia legs, they
- 14:01basically just, like, give out and she falls.
- 14:03I wanna know, like, how did your legs
- 14:05feel on those last 2 jumps, and you
- 14:07know, then you have to you gotta get
- 14:09over that last barrier and just go.
- 14:12Yeah.
- 14:13Yeah. My legs felt pretty shot going over
- 14:16that last.
- 14:17Hurdle. I didn't know if I I'd make
- 14:19it over, and I was just praying, you
- 14:20know, like, please Lord. Like, just give me
- 14:22the finish line, and I actually didn't know
- 14:24she went down,
- 14:25until after the race. Mh until... I didn't
- 14:28even know until after the
- 14:30watching it back. Like, I didn't realize it
- 14:32until, you know, watching the race back
- 14:35hours later she had gone down. Really. I
- 14:37think I was just so focused. Yeah. I
- 14:39mean, I was just eyes ahead, like, did
- 14:41not wanna get caught. And so
- 14:43I had no idea what it was kinda
- 14:44going on behind me. I just did not
- 14:46wanna get nip at the. So I was
- 14:47just trying my hardest to Mh to get
- 14:49to the finish line.
- 14:51Okay. And what did that feel like?
- 14:55Just shocked that I
- 14:58you know, I...
- 14:59Obviously, my faith is a big
- 15:02part of my career and just, yeah, Just
- 15:04very thankful that that's what the lord had
- 15:06for me that night and
- 15:07you know, I said in my post race
- 15:09interview. Like, I think it's easy to, you
- 15:11know, thank the Lord, you know, in victory,
- 15:13but, you know, I wanna be an athlete
- 15:14that also thinks him in diff... Fee as
- 15:16well. You know, I think anytime you get
- 15:18an opportunity to line up out of a
- 15:19Us championship is is, you know, a moment
- 15:22to be thankful for. Like, fee there's women
- 15:24that would have killed to be out there
- 15:25this year. Right? You know, between Cobra and
- 15:27Fe alone. But Mh. Just... Yeah. And
- 15:31my husband always says this, like, Marissa, you
- 15:33get to do this for a living? Like,
- 15:34what an honor that is? You know, like,
- 15:36how cool that is. So I'm, yeah. I'm
- 15:38just very thankful that I even...
- 15:40Did I get to do this for a
- 15:41living? Like, how how cool of a job
- 15:43is that, you know,
- 15:45Hey, everybody. I wanna give a quick shout
- 15:47out to Pre. 1 of my favorite longtime

- 17:38conversation with Marissa
- 17:40Well, and so last year, it was val,
- 17:44val
- 17:45sheet was not sponsored.
- 17:47When she made the team. And so and
- 17:49now we know she has a sponsorship deal.
- 17:51And so now you are the 1
- 17:54without the sponsorship deal. I mean, we know
- 17:55you've... You're working with T smith. Yeah.
- 17:58Yeah. So, hopefully, do you feel hopeful that
- 18:00now that you've made an Olympic team that
- 18:02that'll come to fruition? Yeah. My agents already
- 18:06has,
- 18:083 companies that we're kinda chatting with this
- 18:10week. So
- 18:11nice. Hopeful that we've can sign something in
- 18:13the next few weeks, leading up into the
- 18:15Olympics and you get some... Get some support
- 18:17hopefully through the next few years.
- 18:20Yeah. Because, I mean, it's really...
- 18:22You guys are living on your husband's teacher
- 18:25salary. Like, you... And you are all in
- 18:26on this
- 18:28running dream. I mean, that's
- 18:30That's a lot. That's a lot of sacrifice
- 18:32on both of your ends and
- 18:34as we all know,
- 18:36living on a teacher's salary,
- 18:38can be hard. So this is important and
- 18:40exciting for you. Yeah. Thankfully the Lord always
- 18:43provides, you know, we're never... You know, we
- 18:44never gone into debt, you know, for for
- 18:46this dream and
- 18:48there's been opportunities where, you know, I pace
- 18:50a race and I make some money or,
- 18:53I... Win some surprised... I mean, last I
- 18:55won the Y Road mile that my alone
- 18:57is 5000 dollars. You know? So usually, I
- 19:00am generally able to come out on top.
- 19:02I will say when we are doing our
- 19:03taxes this last year,
- 19:05I think, like, I write everything off right
- 19:07because I'm paying for it. And I think
- 19:09we wrote off
- 19:1017000 dollars in expenses, and I only technically
- 19:13made 10000.
- 19:15And so I'm like, oh, my gosh. He's
- 19:16spent a lot of money on this, but
- 19:18it was worth it. I mean, look now
- 19:20we made a day. So...
- 19:22Definitely worth it.
- 19:24Totally,
- 19:25totally totally. Yeah. You do talk about your
- 19:27faith a lot, which I admire. And when
- 19:30I think about
- 19:31other athletes who talk about their faith. I
- 19:33think Sarah Hall,
- 19:35Sim Sydney Mc.
- 19:38I'm trying to think of others. And so
- 19:41And that's oh, like, it was Sarah, It's
- 19:42like, been, you know, she always
- 19:44Comes back to that. And so I'm curious
- 19:48why that's important to you and how you've
- 19:50decided to use your voice, as... Especially as,
- 19:53like, now you're
- 19:55you're
- 19:57as an athlete you're being elevated. Like, people
- 19:59are hearing your story and it's clear to
- 20:01me that you find it important to talk
- 20:03about. Yeah.
- 20:05Yeah. Something I remember a few years ago,
- 20:07they do these athlete chapel at Us championships.
- 20:10And I remember sitting next to, you know,
- 20:12Olympic Medal and them saying,
- 20:15they won that metal, and it didn't feel.
- 20:17They didn't fill that hole inside of them.
- 20:19Right? And, you know, they...
- 20:23Yeah. There's
- 20:24I think as as a human, like, there's
- 20:27this
- 20:28piece missing. Right? And, I know not everybody
- 20:31has faith.
- 20:32But
- 20:33I just... There's just so much more to
- 20:36this this life than
- 20:39than metals and then running, and I think
- 20:41you have to be grounded And something outside
- 20:43of it. Thankfully, I have... I have my
- 20:45faith for that, but I think if you're
- 20:46not, when all those things come crumbling down
- 20:48or you get injured or you don't make
- 20:50the team,
- 20:51things like that.
- 20:52If you're not grounded in something outside of
- 20:54it, Like, your identity is taken. And so
- 20:56I think making sure that my identity is
- 20:58rooted in Christ and not rooted in
- 21:01know, what I've done or and in in
- 21:02any of my accomplishments is is kind of...
- 21:05Yeah. Why why my faith is so so
- 21:07important to me? Also in this, like, victory,
- 21:10like, not letting everything
- 21:13rest in that. Like, oh, I did it.
- 21:15Here it is. Yeah.
- 21:17Yeah. Totally. Yeah. I...
- 21:20Yeah. I remember, like,
- 21:22you know, I remember our car right after...
- 21:25Like, my husband that we drove, like, halfway
- 21:27home. And Kai is, like, screaming in the
- 21:29car just being a 2 year old. Right?
- 21:31And you get home really quick, like, realize
- 21:33like, he doesn't care. Mommy's in Olivia. Like,
- 21:36he's just tired, and, you know, so you
- 21:38get you get humbled and you realize... Yeah.
- 21:40Like, my identity is not in the vet
- 21:42that I'm Olympia. Like, it's in the fact
- 21:44that... Yeah. I'm a I'm a child of
- 21:46God, and and, yeah, I think that's a
- 21:48great place for me to be rooted.
- 21:50Like always, but especially now with this new
- 21:53platform, you know, I think
- 21:55be to get kinda carried away and and
- 21:57gets swept up in it, but just... I
- 21:59think it's... Yeah. I'm glad that I have
- 22:01my roots
- 22:02sunk down in that. And where does that
- 22:04come from? Did you grow up in the
- 22:06church? Yeah. I would say, we grew up,
- 22:09I'm going to church for the most part.
- 22:11But I'd say, you know, at 1 point
- 22:12you have to make it your own. Right?
- 22:14You know, your parents, you know, are are
- 22:16bringing you to church, but I I
- 22:20would say, It really became, you know, my
- 22:22own faith when I was a teenager, like,
- 22:2513, 14 years old.
- 22:27I had some really great friends that would
- 22:29bring me to youth group and church camp
- 22:30and some of those friends are still some
- 22:33of my best friends. This day, and, you
- 22:34know, they... They're still praying for me and
- 22:37and pouring into me and and now as,
- 22:39you know, as a as a wife and
- 22:41as a mom
- 22:43I just have... Yeah. Such a great community,
- 22:45pouring into me, and I can't even imagine
- 22:47how many people are praying. I mean, and
- 22:49not that... You know, you prayed ultimately for
- 22:51the lord's will and not to win the
- 22:52race, but just, like, for whatever he has,
- 22:54for that day, you know, and obviously,
- 22:57it was to make the team, and I'm
- 22:58very thankful for that. But
- 23:00yeah. I just wanna be within his will
- 23:02and, yeah, that's what's important.
- 23:04And so your son is 2.
- 23:07Were you the only mom in the S
- 23:09Chase field? Yes. I was the only mom.
- 23:13What does that, like, what does competing feel
- 23:16like
- 23:17now? I mean, so in 20 21, fifth
- 23:20place at the olympic trials,
- 23:22since then, a year later, you had a
- 23:23baby.
- 23:24What does that look like now? Like, how
- 23:26does
- 23:27just competing feel differently to you?
- 23:29Honestly, no. Like, when I got back out
- 23:31there in 20 23,
- 23:33and I was fifth in 23 as well.
- 23:36I
- 23:37I was surprised at how that, like,
- 23:40it all just came back. Right? I thought,
- 23:42like, oh, it might take some time to
- 23:43like, kinda get that that drive and that
- 23:46motivation back, but it came back, and I
- 23:48was like, wow. Like, we're still here. We're
- 23:50still doing it. Like, we're not any different.
- 23:52I felt like, but,
- 23:54Yeah. It's really sweet that he gets to
- 23:56see Mommy doing this and mommy, you know,
- 23:58chasing her dreams. And my husband said, you
- 24:01know, something you need to think about when
- 24:02you're in that final is, like,
- 24:04all these women, like, they just get to
- 24:06be pro runners. Right? You know, they get
- 24:08to relax and be off their feet, and,
- 24:10like, you're chasing a toddler around, like, Yeah.
- 24:12Constantly, you know, he has needs that need
- 24:14to be wet. And so he just... Yeah.
- 24:16My husband was just, like, just try to
- 24:18remember that, like, that... Yeah. You're you're doing
- 24:20this for more than just yourself. Like, you
- 24:22have this little boy that, like, thinks the
- 24:23world of you. And and
- 24:26and, yeah. So I I try to remember
- 24:27that when I'm out there that...
- 24:30That... Yeah. Moms moms can do hard things.
- 24:32And I think there is such a thing
- 24:33as mom's strength and...
- 24:35So, yeah.
- 24:36Yeah. I heard you say you had a
- 24:38home birth, and I'm thinking yeah. That's the
- 24:39mom's strength right there.
- 24:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 24:42We
- 24:44think I said, in my interview we... I
- 24:45reacted like, really interesting thing... Interestingly to, like,
- 24:49pain meds and,
- 24:50alcohol. And so we just didn't really wanna
- 24:52give myself that option.
- 24:54And,
- 24:55we've had a very successful home, like, very
- 24:57healthy, and
- 24:59I don't think I'll do it any different
- 25:00for future children.
- 25:02Yeah. I was gonna say, I mean, this
- 25:04is interesting now, because you'll go to Paris,
- 25:07and then and your son is 2,
- 25:09and,
- 25:10you know, like, we've see women
- 25:12competing at very high level into their forties.
- 25:15So like, the family planning thing is challenging
- 25:18though because, obviously, that's like,
- 25:21you know, it's a good 18 months, really.
- 25:23Yeah Yeah. Off of your
- 25:25intense training.
- 25:27So. How do you go about? And and
- 25:29thankfully,
- 25:31Brands are not...
- 25:33Yeah.
- 25:35You know, like, what are these that deductions
- 25:37or whatever you wanna call it, brands are
- 25:38being really good about pregnancy in 20 24
- 25:4120 25.
- 25:43How do you think about that and plan
- 25:44that out as you're very much in those,
- 25:46like, like those years.
- 25:48Yeah. Yeah. Totally. Yeah. I mean, obviously, I
- 25:51showed that I'm better after having a child
- 25:53child, and so
- 25:55I think hopefully, a brand will see that.
- 25:57Real, I think you hit the nail head.
- 25:59It's probably about 18 months really to where
- 26:02And that was short... I think that's a
- 26:04short window. You know, I felt... Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:06I felt like I was totally back, you
- 26:07know, within 18 months or within 9 months
- 26:09after having so 9 months of... Pregnancy and
- 26:11then few moments minutes after having it. But,
- 26:14I felt like
- 26:16that was a great reset year for my
- 26:18body. You know, I wasn't pounding the pavement,
- 26:20and doing this intense training. And so in
- 26:23my head, I feel like I'm getting those
- 26:24years back down the road. And so I
- 26:26think that I think that's where these women
- 26:28are showing that they're really good you know,
- 26:31into their late thirties early forties because I
- 26:33think Sarah is somebody who comes to mind.
- 26:35Right? She has had a baby you know,
- 26:37every 4 years,
- 26:39and, you know, it's still running phenomenally.
- 26:42And so I think
- 26:45I think it's a good break for your
- 26:46body. Obviously, it's hard on your body. You
- 26:47know, pregnancy is not easy on your body,
- 26:49but I think training wise, it is a
- 26:50nice little reset for your body. So hopefully,
- 26:53I get to reap the benefits, you know,
- 26:55for years to come. Yeah. I love that
- 26:57idea. I think that we should all embrace
- 26:58that a little bit more too because it
- 27:01does get hard. You know, like,
- 27:03to not be able to do
- 27:06what we love to do and for your
- 27:08body to
- 27:10go through all those... I mean, pregnancy is
- 27:11hard. It's like a lot of work.
- 27:14So Yeah. If we can, like, lean on
- 27:16that, I love that that you brought that
- 27:18up. It's like a reset. It's like a
- 27:20time for intentional rest.
- 27:22I've had a lot of friends who are
- 27:25stronger and, you know, friends locally. And even
- 27:27moms
- 27:28who are just stronger after having these babies,
- 27:31you know, and Yes, It is this time
- 27:33where, like, you don't feel and control of
- 27:34your body and all these changes are happening,
- 27:36but to be on the other side of
- 27:38it and be a better athlete afterwards, it's
- 27:40really sweet to to know that, yeah. We
- 27:43we are better afterwards.
- 27:45Yeah. Did you ever think when you
- 27:47became pregnant, like, to
- 27:492 years after this, I'm gonna run 09:07.
- 27:54No. And
- 27:551 of my teammates while? I was pregnant...
- 27:57She ran 09:07. She's a British S chaser,
- 28:00and I remember seeing her do that and
- 28:03thinking,
- 28:04I feel like I can do that. You
- 28:06know, I mean, we've we've ran very similar
- 28:08workouts and all this stuff. So I knew
- 28:09it was in there, but She's just had
- 28:11a lot more high level, you know, racist
- 28:13because she's been in diamond leagues and, you
- 28:15know, Europeans in commonwealth.
- 28:17And so I just don't think I was
- 28:19given or had those same opportunities, and so
- 28:22finally connecting it and putting it together on
- 28:24that day. And,
- 28:26yeah. I mean, I've dreamed of 09:07, but
- 28:28to finally be a 09:07 girl is like,
- 28:30whoa. We finally did it.
- 28:33It's so exciting. That S Chase has really
- 28:37To like, it's expanded. I feel like even
- 28:40from the 20 16,
- 28:42really... Okay. If we look back to the
- 28:4420 16 Olympics,
- 28:46I felt like there weren't... It... There wasn't
- 28:48this like depth in the field. It's like,
- 28:51it was like Emma Courtney Colleen.
- 28:53And there were some others in there. You
- 28:55were in there. I know you were injured
- 28:56in 20 16, but, like, Yeah. The depth
- 28:59of how strong.
- 29:01You all are, like, you were saying? Like,
- 29:0311 of you with the Olympic olympics standard?
- 29:06What?
- 29:07Anymore. Do you feel like it's exploding and
- 29:09are we seeing more... People do it younger?
- 29:12Yeah. I think it really is exploding. And
- 29:14I think we're also showing,
- 29:16like, with Corny W running a 14 48.
- 29:20Or 49 and indoors in the 5 k.
- 29:22Like I think we're showing that we're out
- 29:24just these specialists that, like, even Lexi, Lexi
- 29:27a few weeks ago, Lexi Holiday or Lowry.
- 29:29She ran 50 o 2. In A5KA few
- 29:32weeks ago, like, I think we're just showing,
- 29:33like, we're not just good steep that we
- 29:35can do well at these other events, as
- 29:37well.
- 29:38But,
- 29:39yes, the steep... I mean, I think I
- 29:42think that was looking at the world list
- 29:44after
- 29:45our race and Ali is twentieth in the
- 29:48world Ali strand twentieth in the world right
- 29:50now. So
- 29:51I mean, and she was. I don't know.
- 29:53Not. I don't can't remember what she was
- 29:54at the trials, but not show babies like
- 29:56that? 8. So we have 8 women in
- 29:58the top... 20, and that doesn't include Ferrets
- 30:01and Cobra. Like, that's... I mean, 10 wow...
- 30:03I mean, I essentially 10 of the top
- 30:0520. That's insane.
- 30:07So... Yeah. Yes. I think we're just elevating
- 30:09each other yet. Yeah. How will you,
- 30:13like, how will you prepare for this world
- 30:16stage with like, with your coach and everything,
- 30:18and
- 30:19also just mentally.
- 30:21Yeah.
- 30:23Yeah. He said, you know, he called me
- 30:25on...
- 30:26Thursday night after, you know, we were kind
- 30:28of just settling down at home as like,
- 30:2911:30 at night and trying to get ready
- 30:31for bed. I mean, I didn't sleep at
- 30:33all. But, you know, trying to how can
- 30:35you How could you?
- 30:36No. I think... I think has something an
- 30:37hour and a half. But
- 30:39he said,
- 30:41ky Marissa. I'm just gonna say this.
- 30:43Once right now, and then we're not gonna
- 30:45talk again, but we need to start thinking
- 30:47about making an Olympic final. You know, and
- 30:49he's like, I'm not gonna mention again, but,
- 30:51like, that has to be in your mind
- 30:53because my time is number 6 in the
- 30:55world right now. And I mean, I never
- 30:56even... You know, my goal is just to
- 30:58make the Olympics, but he said, Right. I'm
- 31:00not going to it's just to participate. And
- 31:02I agree. Like, you know, I think
- 31:04when you're sick, like, wow, a medal is
- 31:07not out of the question. I mean, I
- 31:09think Val is thrown in the world right
- 31:10now school.
- 31:12Really cool to see if, you know, 1
- 31:13of us can... Or all of us can
- 31:15try to, yeah, vie for a metal spot.
- 31:18Will you be
- 31:20like, communicating with the other girls leading up
- 31:23to it? And what does that look like?
- 31:25Yeah. I'm not sure when they're going over.
- 31:27We're going over the 20 eighth. So about
- 31:29a week before, I didn't chat with them
- 31:31to see when they're going over. I probably
- 31:33will message them just to see if 20
- 31:35we can link up over there for, you
- 31:36know, even if we're not doing the same
- 31:38workout, but some of our last few workouts
- 31:40together that last week, just being able to,
- 31:42you know, warm up and cool down together,
- 31:44but
- 31:45yeah. We'll be based in in boise.
- 31:48We actually have a ski mountain that's right
- 31:49outside of Boise
- 31:51that's 7000 feet, and it's 4 5 minute
- 31:54dry for us, and so we'll go stay
- 31:55up there and then just drop down to
- 31:57boys like my harder work and stuff. So
- 31:59we thought about going back to flags staff
- 32:00or bolder, but my We just have been
- 32:02gone so much that we just wanna to
- 32:03be home and kind of around our community
- 32:05for this last month leading up. Totally. Yeah.
- 32:08I think I saw on Instagram. You were
- 32:09looking for a place to rent up there.
- 32:11We found 1. Well, I mean, I've had
- 32:133 people. I got 3
- 32:15option. Yep. Yep. So we're we're good to
- 32:16go. Yep. Oh you're good to go. Oh,
- 32:18my gosh. Yeah. Well, I was trying to
- 32:20rent 1, and it was 5000 dollars for
- 32:233 weeks, like it was
- 32:25insane, and so I was hoping that if
- 32:27I put the word out there or, like,
- 32:28went on the news and said something that
- 32:30I found something. So, yeah, we we found
- 32:321 thankfully.
- 32:33She's in Olympia, someone open up your.
- 32:38Yeah. Sorry. I think there's a little bit
- 32:39of a delay here. So I think that's
- 32:41why
- 32:42I will like, say something to than you're
- 32:43about to say something.
- 32:45Was I gonna say about that? Oh, do
- 32:47you have people though that you'll be able
- 32:49to train with? And, like, then, what does
- 32:51the training look like? Because it was like,
- 32:53you trained to kind of...
- 32:55Have the most excellent race ever at the
- 32:58trials, and now you gotta kinda, like, chill
- 32:59for a minute, but then ramp back up?
- 33:01Yeah. So I'm hoping my husband can do
- 33:03quite a bit of training with me. Usually,
- 33:06he's kinda on babysitting sitting duty in the
- 33:08summertime, but my mom and mother law, will
- 33:10be covering a lot of that so that
- 33:12he can do a lot of the training
- 33:13with me. Training And then 1 of my
- 33:15my coach coaches,
- 33:17a male marathon are here,
- 33:19and he's not quite ready to start his
- 33:21Olympic or his marathon bill for the fall
- 33:23yet. So he'll probably be hopping in workouts
- 33:26with me as well.
- 33:27But yeah, those are probably be, the few
- 33:30that Are able to... Yeah. Pop with me
- 33:32the over this next few weeks. Ida ida
- 33:34foot. Is that what the group is called?
- 33:36Idaho a foot. IAH foot. Okay. How big
- 33:40is that group? Tell me a little bit
- 33:41about the group? Yeah. So my coach was
- 33:44just solely coaching online. The since 20 21.
- 33:48I believe he launched his business. So he
- 33:50was the head coach at University of San
- 33:52Francisco,
- 33:53and then during Covid kinda stepped away and
- 33:55started this online coaching business.
- 33:57Idaho whole foot. And then,
- 34:00his dream job was the Boise State job,
- 34:02and that opened up this spring and so
- 34:04he applied for it and got it, which
- 34:06was very shocking,
- 34:08and we're very thankful. So then now
- 34:11He's down to about 10 athletes. He... He
- 34:13was a full time business. Right? I mean,
- 34:15he was coaching, you know, 50 athletes, probably
- 34:175 to 7 at my level.
- 34:21That were, like, you know, trying to make
- 34:23either lump the olympic team or make the
- 34:24olympic of trial. So he's kept most of
- 34:26his elites, but unfortunately, he had to let
- 34:28a lot of people go just pick now
- 34:29he has a fun time job.

- 35:16Yeah. I love that you're like, this is
- 35:19my life here. Go Like, this is where
- 35:21I live. This is my community. This is
- 35:23where my family lives
- 35:25because I feel like a lot of people
- 35:26feel pressure. I gotta move to boulder. I
- 35:28gotta move to flags. Staff, you know,
- 35:31and you've just proven that you actually don't
- 35:34have to do that. Yeah. And I've seen
- 35:36a lot of, you know,
- 35:37people get these contracts and they move, and
- 35:40then,
- 35:41you know, they get injured or, you know,
- 35:43they don't have their support system and
- 35:45I just knew that wasn't for me, you
- 35:47know, I just,
- 35:48we,
- 35:49you know, after we had been here for...
- 35:52You know, 5 years of college, and then
- 35:54even a 6 year because my husband was
- 35:56finishing his master's.
- 35:57And my in laws were here, like, we
- 35:59just didn't. Yeah. We just didn't want to
- 36:01move and just Wanna compromise
- 36:03any of that. And so,
- 36:05yeah, we've we've done it the hard way.
- 36:07And like we said, we rely on the
- 36:09Lord, and he's been very, very very, very
- 36:12very, very good to us and always provided
- 36:14and
- 36:15yeah, we've been very thankful and very blessed
- 36:18to live here.
- 36:19What is your, like... When you wake up
- 36:21in the morning? When like, do you like,
- 36:23pray before get out of bed? What does
- 36:25your morning routine look like? Yeah. I... It
- 36:28looks a little bit different now that you
- 36:29have a toddler. Generally, he's wake yeah. Yeah.
- 36:31But, you know.
- 36:33In our sweet sketchy a crystal or a
- 36:35big boy bed.
- 36:37He's in a crib, but we will likely
- 36:39be... Switching them to a bed somewhat soon.
- 36:42And probably after the summer,
- 36:43after After Paris, don't do it before Paris.
- 36:46No. Yeah. No. Not before Paris and I'm
- 36:48potty training as well, you know, down the
- 36:50road. But
- 36:51yeah. I try to do...
- 36:54I would say when I'm really like studying
- 36:56and and in the, it's probably during his
- 36:58nap time. Honestly,
- 37:00he usually takes a 2 to 3 hour
- 37:01nap. And so that's prop probably my best
- 37:03time
- 37:04to study. I do this bible study called
- 37:08bible study fellowship. I feel like I'm gonna
- 37:09get that wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's
- 37:10called Bible study fellowship. And it's actually this
- 37:13worldwide study. So everybody around the world is
- 37:15studying the same book that year. So they
- 37:17do a book of the bible every year.
- 37:19So last year, it was the book of
- 37:20John and this year It's the next year
- 37:21it'll would be the whole revelation of so
- 37:23year. Everybody around the world is studying the
- 37:25same book.
- 37:27Which is really cool. So I go on
- 37:28Wednesdays, and there's, like,
- 37:31there's, like, a lecture and then, like, a
- 37:32group study with these women. But the cool
- 37:34thing about it is since it's all around
- 37:36the world when I was in boulder,
- 37:38I got to join a group in boulder.
- 37:40And so I got to meet these women,
- 37:42you know, and they got to... Be, like,
- 37:44around me and praying for me when I
- 37:45was in boulder, and then when I was
- 37:46in Flags south, the the said it was
- 37:48over because it's done in May. But, yeah.
- 37:50That's been really cool too is, like, meeting
- 37:51the, you know, be able to join a
- 37:53community in another place where I normally wouldn't
- 37:56have community. So... But, yeah, Usually do... Yeah,
- 37:59my scripture reading,
- 38:01being and study during his nap time. And
- 38:03then I try to read to kai actually,
- 38:04like, during his breakfast. I'll do, like, a
- 38:06song or,
- 38:07a problem or something while he's re... While
- 38:09he's eating breakfast is fun. Okay. So Am
- 38:12trying to read... You might have an opinion
- 38:14about this.
- 38:16I'm trying to read the bible cover to
- 38:17cover. Is and
- 38:19I just got to
- 38:21first Samuel.
- 38:22Okay. This is hard.
- 38:25I think people are, like, you need some
- 38:27pallet cleansers, like you need to not just
- 38:30read it cover to cover. You need to,
- 38:31like, like, put in some solves in there
- 38:34and, like, But I'm kind of like, I
- 38:35don't know. I feel like is there something
- 38:38to? Like, there's a reason it's in this
- 38:40order. So, like, for some reason, in my
- 38:41brain, I just wanna do it all the
- 38:43way through, you know?
- 38:44Yeah. So I've seen a couple different
- 38:47ways to do it. We've definitely done it
- 38:49cover to cover I'm my husband and I,
- 38:50but also we've done it chronological,
- 38:53and so how the bible actually written chronological
- 38:56is not the order that it's actually in.
- 38:57So I think it's, like some of Genesis,
- 38:59and then it goes to job, and then
- 39:01it kinda jumps around.
- 39:03And then I've also seen these people that
- 39:05we stay within Eugene. They're amazing. So the
- 39:08guy that married us, his parents live in
- 39:10Eugene, and they lived there for 60 years.
- 39:12They're were, like, Wow 85, like, so awesome.
- 39:14So we always stay with them, and they
- 39:17they do... They read every day together, and
- 39:20they had this list of how they do
- 39:21it every day. And there's just, like, a
- 39:23little bit of old testament and a little
- 39:25bit of new testament every day. Mh. And
- 39:27I think that's a great way to do
- 39:28it because, like you said, like, you get
- 39:30some of that heavy stuff, you know, from
- 39:31the old testament, and then, you know, obviously,
- 39:34like, the new testament is, like, the redemption
- 39:36in Christ, you know,
- 39:37coming. And so I think maybe that... Maybe
- 39:40maybe that could be what you do is
- 39:43sprinkle that you g the... Yeah. Yeah. I
- 39:45think that... I do like, the idea of
- 39:47the chronological
- 39:48way though.
- 39:50Yeah. It's just, like, a lot of, like,
- 39:51lineage and, like...
- 39:54Like, a lot of it right now, I
- 39:56feel like the past
- 39:57few months has just been about, like, land.
- 39:59Like, taking over
- 40:01land,
- 40:02And I'm just like... And then and that's
- 40:04the study bible so then I'll, like, read
- 40:06the... Like, this is what you should be,
- 40:09you know, what... Why this is here and
- 40:11what you should be taking from it.
- 40:13But I've always wanted to, and I've never
- 40:15committed to it. And this is the furthest
- 40:18I've ever made it, like,
- 40:20trying to go, like, front to back. So
- 40:23yeah. I'm sticking to it.
- 40:25Yes. You could do. And even
- 40:27the the cool thing, even if you don't
- 40:28make it in a year, like, you... I
- 40:30don't think I would more than you... Yeah.
- 40:32Yeah. But like, keep going because, you know,
- 40:35it doesn't yeah. Like, I think it gives
- 40:36you a guidance, which is amazing. You know?
- 40:39Yeah. For sure.
- 40:41Well, III really...
- 40:43Appreciate that you bring up your faith and
- 40:46that you talk about it because
- 40:48I don't know. I mean, sometimes it feels
- 40:50a little bit intimidating. Like, sometimes
- 40:52I feel like people will
- 40:55judge me because,
- 40:57Christianity is judged so harshly in 20 24.
- 41:00And
- 41:02Yeah. I think it can be hard sometimes.
- 41:04Yeah. And sometimes I wondered, you know, Like,
- 41:07is that why I don't have a sponsor.
- 41:08Right? Like, I don't know what these companies
- 41:11you know, our thinking. But, like, ultimately, like,
- 41:13my faith is more important than than being
- 41:15sponsored,
- 41:16and that's what I come back to is,
- 41:18like, my faith is my foundation. You know,
- 41:20it's everything for us. And so I'd rather
- 41:23stand on that rock than stand on any
- 41:24other rock.
- 41:26Well, lastly here before we do into podcast
- 41:28questions for
- 41:29you know, when you do something like, really
- 41:32big in your life. You get married. You
- 41:33buy your house. You run a marathon, you
- 41:35make the Olympic team.
- 41:38You
- 41:39kind of, like can set yourself up for,
- 41:41like, I know when this is all over,
- 41:44like there might be a come down. Right?
- 41:46Like, even after, like last year I planned
- 41:48my fort birthday, like, I knew that once
- 41:50my family all went home and my friends
- 41:52left, I'd be like,
- 41:54No what? You know?
- 41:56So do you do you even process that
- 41:58at all? Or have you even thought about
- 42:00that? I know that's kind of a weird
- 42:01question because you... It hasn't even happened yet.
- 42:03But we've talked about how your faith is
- 42:06more important
- 42:07anyway.
- 42:08Tell me what you think about that, all
- 42:10that. But Yeah. I think something that I
- 42:12thought about leading into the trials and that
- 42:14I told some of my girlfriends was my
- 42:17life is so full and so beautiful outside
- 42:19of running.
- 42:20That it's not my everything, You know? And
- 42:23I
- 42:24I love being a mom and a home
- 42:26and taking care of my home and taking
- 42:28care of you know, kai and
- 42:31being a coach with my husband and,
- 42:34you know, helping my friends take care of
- 42:35their children and so
- 42:37my life is so full and so beautiful
- 42:39outside of running that I don't... Yes. There
- 42:40there will be an obvious let down. You
- 42:42know, like, the electric is over,
- 42:44but I think
- 42:46I have so much more beauty outside of
- 42:47running that
- 42:49I think, yeah. I'll also fill my days
- 42:51with those things in the fall, and And
- 42:53I miss some of those things, and so
- 42:54I'll be looking forward to settling back in
- 42:56as well. So you have, like, a community,
- 42:58like, your friends, like, you...
- 43:01Your kids all kinda hang out and play
- 43:03and you kinda take turns helping out with
- 43:04each other's kids?
- 43:06Yes. We... My best friend she lives. She...
- 43:08They bought a house like... I don't know.
- 43:10A 5 minute walk from us. I mean,
- 43:12literally, this is my best phase. When I
- 43:13was
- 43:1413 years old. Yeah. And my
- 43:17dream together.
- 43:19Yes. And so she,
- 43:22she has 2 children and I have 1,
- 43:23and so we'll just trade childcare care like,
- 43:25hey. Can you watch them for the first
- 43:272 hours and then and then I'll wash
- 43:28them for 2 out? I mean, it's incredible.
- 43:30It's, like, literally what we dreamed of? And
- 43:32and then, yeah. I mean, all of our
- 43:33friends... Can pretty much. Most of her our
- 43:35friends have just had their first child. So
- 43:37it's really sweet that we've just, yeah, kind
- 43:39of in this phase together.
- 43:41We have so moved away from, like, communal
- 43:44child raising. And if you can, like, lean
- 43:47into a community who will roll up their
- 43:49sleeves and do it with you, there's nothing
- 43:52better.
- 43:53Yeah. Nothing bad it. I agree. And I
- 43:55I can't imagine. Yeah. I can't imagine not
- 43:56having the support that we have. Okay. I
- 43:59always wrap up with these end of podcast
- 44:00podcasts. Questions. I hope we covered everything. We...
- 44:04Yeah. Yeah. I think we're good.
- 44:06What is something professionally? This is a weird
- 44:08question to ask because you just made an
- 44:10olympic team.
- 44:11But you've also talked about how full your
- 44:12life is outside of it. So just in
- 44:14the grand scope of life. What is something
- 44:17professionally or personally?
- 44:18You'd like to do that you haven't done
- 44:20yet. Oh my gosh. That is a good
- 44:23question.
- 44:25I think something that I think. About, you
- 44:27know, obviously, you run 09:07 and you're, like,
- 44:29gosh, can I ever redo that again? I
- 44:30think my my next goal would be to
- 44:33be consistent at this normal. Right? To not
- 44:35just be... Because you know, do it once,
- 44:37but, like, to be consistently in, you know,
- 44:39the top 10 in the world and
- 44:43yeah, That'd probably be something that I just
- 44:45be consistent at this level. That's so good.
- 44:4815 second PRI just like, we have to
- 44:50reiterate that 15 seconds
- 44:53in 3000 meters like, that is a lot.
- 44:57Yeah. I know. It's wild. You're A90S.
- 45:02Yeah. And it's funny because I didn't have
- 45:05a great race at Portland Track Festival
- 45:08a few weeks before this race, and
- 45:11remember going to my coach afterwards where it's
- 45:12kinda frustrated, and I'm like, I'm just tired
- 45:14of being a 9 thirties girl, and he's
- 45:16like, person, you're not a 09:30 girl. Like
- 45:18you've run 09:22.
- 45:20But I I feel like I consistently run,
- 45:22you know, 09:31,
- 45:2409:34, 09:37,
- 45:26and
- 45:28And so, yeah. No
- 45:30That's just you skip the 9 ones. You
- 45:32skip the 9 1. We didn't...
- 45:34We didn't need it. Which is crazy because
- 45:36when I was in college, and I got
- 45:39second at the Nc championships,
- 45:41I went from 10:02
- 45:43to 09:42,
- 45:45like, in 1 race. Wow. And so I
- 45:47skipped the 09:50. So I we just did
- 45:49it again,
- 45:51Yeah. Yeah. Usually I don't need to mess
- 45:52around in there. But your code right too.
- 45:55And sometimes I feel like we think...
- 45:58Because we haven't ran a certain time in
- 46:00race. It doesn't mean
- 46:01that you're not that person, You just haven't
- 46:04executed it when it mattered yet. Yeah.
- 46:06Yes. Totally. I love that yet. You know,
- 46:09yeah. We use that in coaching. Like, we
- 46:11just haven't done it yet, and I think
- 46:12the app, that's a great place to be.
- 46:14Okay. What's the best most recent book you've
- 46:16read? Have you made time for that at
- 46:17all? Yeah. I've actually been trying to read.
- 46:20I'm a lot. I I got off social
- 46:22media, leading up into the trials, and then
- 46:24I'm always saw myself, I'd be on till
- 46:26Wednesday, and then I'm gonna be off for
- 46:28the most part do, you know, obligation for
- 46:30social my best friend. She's been my social
- 46:32media manager for the last week or so.
- 46:34So it's amazing. I just sent there's things
- 46:37and she'll post them, but
- 46:39alfred. Credit a few books lately. The 1
- 46:42that
- 46:43we're reading right now... Oh, that my has
- 46:45my book just read is
- 46:46Man Manifesto, I might be saying that wrong
- 46:49but it's actually about coaching. It's this
- 46:51he's this elite. He's a professional baseball player,
- 46:54and he
- 46:56started he got asked to coaching. Like, son's
- 46:58little league team, and he, like, wrote this
- 47:01whole letter to the parents ahead of time
- 47:02and just said,
- 47:04I need you all to, like, basically be
- 47:06silent. Like, we are the coaches, his and,
- 47:08like, I need you to trust me. Like,
- 47:10you know, I just think parents have kinda
- 47:13overtake. These arenas now. And so I'm about
- 47:16halfway through that bucket has been really good
- 47:17reading that as as, you know, a parent
- 47:19now and also as a coach. So that's
- 47:21been a good 1. I am telling you
- 47:23what.
- 47:24I don't know not not know what these
- 47:26parents are they. Just I was at, like,
- 47:281 of my kids soccer games
- 47:30in the spring. And,
- 47:321 of the parents not on our team
- 47:33and another team was like, hey.
- 47:35How about switching out the bench? Like, yelling
- 47:38at the coaches to switch out the and
- 47:39I'm like,
- 47:40is it... And I didn't know, like, who
- 47:41their kid was. Like, if their kid... If
- 47:43they wanted their kid to have a break
- 47:44or if they wanted their kid to have
- 47:45more playing in time, but I was like,
- 47:48oh, my gosh. I cannot believe what this
- 47:50coach must be thinking right now,
- 47:52Oh my gosh. I know. And these coaches
- 47:55are, like,
- 47:56volunteers most of the time. Unless you're Yeah.
- 47:59In, like,
- 48:00travel leagues and your pain for professional coaches,
- 48:02like most of these coaches are parent volunteers.
- 48:05Right. Yeah. I know.
- 48:07I know. I... Yeah. We'll see. I mean,
- 48:09we're we're far away from youth sports, which
- 48:11we're, you know, we do, but
- 48:14I know. Yeah.
- 48:16It's so fun though. I am telling you
- 48:18what,
- 48:19my favorite part of parenting is going to
- 48:21my kid sports games. It is is just
- 48:23like, We do a lot of soccer. We
- 48:25do swim meats, but, like, it is the
- 48:27most fun because they're working hard and it
- 48:30is so...
- 48:31Cool to see your kid, care about something
- 48:34enough that they wanna work hard and breathe
- 48:36hard do all those bags.
- 48:38But then
- 48:39they're also having so much fun, and it's
- 48:42like, there's just nothing better. It's so natural
- 48:44too, like,
- 48:46kids like to run and
- 48:48yeah. So you've got a lot of fun
- 48:51to look forward to.
- 48:52Yes.
- 48:532 more questions. Do you have a nonprofit
- 48:55you like to support? Yes. I'm so glad
- 48:57you asked that. So Ru, it's spelled RUJA,
- 49:01and it means to dream in Uganda. So
- 49:04I actually...
- 49:05On a trip with them in 20 18,
- 49:07and my best friend's husband is the,
- 49:12c... Or he's the founder of the nonprofit.
- 49:14So they basically help Oh, cool. Rescue children.
- 49:17Yeah. Yeah. So they they help rescue children
- 49:19out of child labor in Uganda. Wow. And
- 49:22they recently
- 49:23in the last... I wanna say... I can't
- 49:25remember when they did maybe last year. They
- 49:27opened a medical clinic in a village. They
- 49:29are, about to build a church over there
- 49:32And, yeah. We love that organization. We support
- 49:34it monthly,
- 49:36and, yeah, We'd love to get the name
- 49:37out there more about what they're doing over
- 49:39there. Raja.
- 49:40Ru. Ru. Ru. RUJ. Yeah. Is that what
- 49:43you said? Yep.
- 49:45Cool. Thanks for sharing that. And we'll put
- 49:46that link in the show notes so that
- 49:48people can check it out if they want
- 49:49to.
- 49:50Our last question is what message would you
- 49:52like to leave with our audience today?
- 49:55Great question.
- 49:57Yeah. I, I think it comes back to
- 49:59faith of of not finding fulfillment in the
- 50:02things of this world and and finding
- 50:04where you can be rooted. You know, obviously,
- 50:06for me, that's Christ and for everybody I
- 50:09would hope that would would be Christ. But
- 50:12yeah. This this world is fleeting, and someday
- 50:14it's gonna pass away and I just hope
- 50:16that
- 50:17I can be a light and and
- 50:20yeah, bring,
- 50:21you know, show people on what it means
- 50:23to be a follower of Christ.
