- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, I love a bit of country music. I think
- 0:02Speaker 1: that lots of people probably know that. Growing up in
- 0:05Speaker 1: Mount Isa, it's hard not to like country music. But
- 0:09Speaker 1: my next guest is an Australian country music legend. She
- 0:13Speaker 1: is a twenty one time Golden Guitar winner and has
- 0:16Speaker 1: released a new song with James Blundelle. Her name is
- 0:20Speaker 1: Sarah Storer and I'm very excited that she is right
- 0:22Speaker 1: here in the studio with me.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Good morning, good a Katie.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I tell you what now, I got a message on
- 0:28Speaker 1: Friday morning and it was from you, and I thought,
- 0:32Speaker 1: oh my goodness, this is a bit exciting. It doesn't
- 0:34Speaker 1: get more exciting than Sarah Stora sending you a message
- 0:38Speaker 1: to say she's got a new new trackout.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yes, sorry about that after stalking you there, Katie, but
- 0:44Speaker 2: I thought, what's the chances Katie might just play the song?
- 0:48Speaker 2: And body, I know you've asked me to come in
- 0:50Speaker 2: and yes, so thank you.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Well, I just thought, how wonderful that you're living here
- 0:55Speaker 1: in the Northern Territory these days, aren't you. Yeah?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Dave and the kids and I moved back a
- 1:01Speaker 2: couple of years ago, you know, we did. We were
- 1:04Speaker 2: here prior to that, and we took off to Aubury
- 1:06Speaker 2: to give down South a bit of a go, but
- 1:09Speaker 2: it wasn't our place. We just we're happy back up here,
- 1:12Speaker 2: and yeah, loving it.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And now you've lived in the likes of Camerwheel, You've
- 1:16Speaker 1: lived in Catherine, you're a teacher in Catherine, and also
- 1:20Speaker 1: in some of the remote communities as well.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Were CALKARINGI spent about five years out there, year in Catherine,
- 1:28Speaker 2: And yeah, I've lived on the Central Coast for a
- 1:30Speaker 2: long time for about twelve years. That was music that
- 1:33Speaker 2: was working on and I was single, and then I
- 1:35Speaker 2: met Dave up here visiting and so that's what landed
- 1:39Speaker 2: me back here, Hobby and you know, pregnant a few
- 1:43Speaker 2: months later.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And so's your husband a territory boy.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Well, no, he's actually a Sydney boy. But ever he
- 1:50Speaker 2: was right in the middle of Sydney and all the
- 1:53Speaker 2: country borders would come into his school and he see
- 1:56Speaker 2: these kids are really, you know, good, good kids, all farmers,
- 2:00Speaker 2: and he said that's what he wanted to do, was
- 2:02Speaker 2: to go and live out bush, be a farmer or
- 2:05Speaker 2: just work on the land. So he's been doing it
- 2:07Speaker 2: for twenty something years.
- 2:08Speaker 1: How awesome. Like I always think, it doesn't get better
- 2:12Speaker 1: than when you meet nice, good kind country people. And
- 2:16Speaker 1: you can tell, I reckon when people have grown up
- 2:17Speaker 1: in the bush, or when they love living in the
- 2:19Speaker 1: bush and love living in places like the Northern Territory.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Well that's what country music's about too. We often
- 2:27Speaker 2: got our ears open for beautiful bush stories about characters
- 2:31Speaker 2: and places and and you know, the stories haven't all
- 2:36Speaker 2: been sung yet. So it's always a great thing for
- 2:39Speaker 2: country music because you're always listening for that next song
- 2:42Speaker 2: that hasn't been written.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Now, tell me a little bit about this new track
- 2:45Speaker 1: that you've written with James Blundell. Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 2: So James and I are sharing the stage next year
- 2:51Speaker 2: at Tamworth Country Music Festival, and I just thought, oh, look,
- 2:55Speaker 2: I'll just give it a go. I'll try and write
- 2:58Speaker 2: a song for us that we can get out this
- 3:00Speaker 2: year so then we can make it something special for
- 3:03Speaker 2: the show next year. So I had a few attempts,
- 3:07Speaker 2: so horrible. The songs were horrible. I don't believe what
- 3:11Speaker 2: they were. And so I grabbed an old song of
- 3:14Speaker 2: his Way out West with James Ray and the Big Kid,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and I picked one of my old title Sweet Dreams,
- 3:19Speaker 2: and I thought, oh, that that sounds good. Raunchy love affair,
- 3:23Speaker 2: and I really liked what I'd written, and I thought,
- 3:27Speaker 2: because it's a waste of time, money and a waste
- 3:30Speaker 2: of people, sorry, people's ears for three and a half
- 3:33Speaker 2: miss minutes listening to a song that I want to
- 3:35Speaker 2: listen to. So I really had to believe in the song,
- 3:39Speaker 2: and James said yes, so we recorded it and yeah
- 3:43Speaker 2: it turned out all right, Well we're.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Going to play it in a couple of minutes, but
- 3:46Speaker 1: tell me more think you're going to be So you
- 3:48Speaker 1: guys are going to be sharing the stage in Tamworth
- 3:50Speaker 1: at the Country Music Festival early next year early.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Tamworth starts to end of January, sort of mid January,
- 3:57Speaker 2: so hopefully it will all go ahead. Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 1: What's it been like over the last couple of years
- 4:02Speaker 1: with COVID and you know, trying to be the country
- 4:07Speaker 1: music artists that you are and still perform, But it's
- 4:10Speaker 1: been such a difficult time.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I'd imagine it's been very quiet, and you know, I've
- 4:15Speaker 2: been one of the lucky ones, you know, living up here.
- 4:17Speaker 2: We just got in time before everything's shut down, so
- 4:21Speaker 2: we've had it pretty good up here compared to you know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: down South and what a lot of musicians have been
- 4:27Speaker 2: through down South. But it's just been quiet. And I
- 4:31Speaker 2: think what's hard is every time you go to plan
- 4:33Speaker 2: a tour within twenty four hours, that can all come
- 4:36Speaker 2: crashing down and you're changing flights, so you're finding band
- 4:40Speaker 2: members from the same state because they can't get across border.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So it's been difficult for the music industry. But the
- 4:46Speaker 2: light is shining kind of ye it was the other day.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I don't know about now, But anyway.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It's so hard, isn't it, Like you know, things just
- 4:55Speaker 1: changed from day to day and you don't know exactly
- 4:57Speaker 1: what's going to happen.
- 4:58Speaker 2: It's just the unknowing, you know. And just for our family,
- 5:02Speaker 2: just travel plans, we've now canceled all everything in your
- 5:05Speaker 2: New South Wales, but because we've got to get Harry,
- 5:08Speaker 2: one of our boys, a starting boarding school in Brisbane.
- 5:11Speaker 2: But we don't want to take all the kids in
- 5:13Speaker 2: your New South in case they lock us out of QUEENSLANDA.
- 5:15Speaker 2: It's just it's the unknowing is just worried, so you're
- 5:19Speaker 2: better off just not taking a risky stake.
- 5:22Speaker 1: But yeah, that's how I think, That's how a lot
- 5:24Speaker 1: of people are feeling at this point. Now, tell me
- 5:27Speaker 1: did you write this song here in the Northern Territory.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I did out of Girrowhen. I love that very inspirational
- 5:33Speaker 2: place out there.
- 5:35Speaker 1: How awesome. And living in the territory.
- 5:38Speaker 2: We love it. And Dave's in the cattle industry, so
- 5:41Speaker 2: he's back doing what he loves and he knows everyone
- 5:45Speaker 2: from everywhere. And I've always loved it up here. Teaching
- 5:50Speaker 2: out Bush was my first experience apart from living in
- 5:53Speaker 2: Camelwell and experience that remote life. But I just loved it.
- 5:57Speaker 2: What a treasure and really glad I I had the
- 6:01Speaker 2: courage to go out and do something when I was
- 6:03Speaker 2: so young. Yeah, somewhere so remote, it was just a treasure.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I'll tell you what. Twenty one golden guitars.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Has anyone else won that many? Ever?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah? They're very in front. Yeah yeah, I'm trying to.
- 6:18Speaker 1: But they're not territories like you are that will claim
- 6:23Speaker 1: you to get these days.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeahah, they really are, but you know so, Yeah you're lucky. Yeah,
- 6:31Speaker 2: I reckon, I'll be lucky for I ever see another
- 6:33Speaker 2: one but hey, I'm happy with twenty one.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Oh my god, you got to be happy with that.
- 6:37Speaker 1: You are an amazingly talented woman. And I love my
- 6:41Speaker 1: country music and I had to listen to this beautiful song.
- 6:44Speaker 1: On the weekend, we'll play it for our listeners now.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Sarah Stora, thank you so much for joining us in
- 6:48Speaker 1: the studio.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Thanks for having me.
- 6:50Speaker 1: We really appreciate
