- 0:20Speaker 2: and Delaney Anne. The documentary shines a light of what
- 0:23Speaker 2: it's like to be a woman in the music industry
- 0:26Speaker 2: and on the road. Wendy Moulton is the twenty first
- 0:30Speaker 2: season runner up of the Voice and is currently on
- 0:33Speaker 2: tour with Vince Gill. Delaney Anne is an eighth generation
- 0:38Speaker 2: Texas country singer songwriter, and Judy Pastor is a Nashville
- 0:43Speaker 2: based Americana artist originally from Pennsylvania. Join me as we
- 0:49Speaker 2: discuss our upcoming documentary. We are here at the sag
- 0:53Speaker 2: Aftra office in the Genie Silly Studio on Music Road Today.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Welcome to Taking a Walk Nashville with your hosts singer
- 1:06Speaker 1: songwriter Sarah Harrelson.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Can all of you ladies tell me what made you
- 1:11Speaker 3: want to get involved with The Women Behind the Lyrics documentary.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Hi, my name is Wendy Moten, and it seemed like
- 1:18Speaker 4: an amazing opportunity to share my story and my journey
- 1:23Speaker 4: of my musical career. And so here was a great
- 1:25Speaker 4: opportunity to do that and to share and learn from
- 1:29Speaker 4: other some of our other divas. That's a part of
- 1:34Speaker 4: the show. And you know, you know, life is about experiences,
- 1:37Speaker 4: and this is another one of those great experiences.
- 1:39Speaker 5: I love that my name is Delaney and I really
- 1:42Speaker 5: wanted to be a part of Women Behind the Lyrics
- 1:44Speaker 5: because I just feel so inspired by women in music.
- 1:48Speaker 5: I think it's just an amazing thing to be a
- 1:50Speaker 5: woman in music. It's honestly such an honor to be
- 1:55Speaker 5: a part of this industry and to be able to
- 1:57Speaker 5: do what we love. And I thought that this could
- 2:00Speaker 5: be a great way to help inspire other young artists
- 2:03Speaker 5: and just women that maybe want to get involved in music.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Absolutely, and what about you, Judy.
- 2:09Speaker 6: I wanted to connect with all of you ladies. I
- 2:13Speaker 6: wanted to be able to write with the women together
- 2:17Speaker 6: like what we're doing sing and just just have that
- 2:21Speaker 6: like female camaraderie.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think this documentary is great to shine
- 2:26Speaker 3: a light on what it's like to be a female
- 2:28Speaker 3: in the music industry, because it's not all glitter. You know,
- 2:31Speaker 3: sometimes we're doing our makeup and gas stations. And there's
- 2:35Speaker 3: a lot more to consider being a female in the
- 2:37Speaker 3: music industry, like safety on the road that I think
- 2:39Speaker 3: people get insights into and kind of speaking along those lines,
- 2:46Speaker 3: can any of you talk about maybe struggles you have
- 2:48Speaker 3: face being a woman in music.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Well, I've been in this game longer than most, and
- 2:55Speaker 4: I would have to say there's struggles no different than
- 2:59Speaker 4: in every day life for any woman in the world.
- 3:03Speaker 4: The goal is to stay true to yourself, have some boundaries,
- 3:07Speaker 4: and in the music industry you still have to know
- 3:10Speaker 4: what you're gonna do and what you're not gonna do.
- 3:12Speaker 4: And so I've always known that, and I think that
- 3:15Speaker 4: my musical journey has been one that I'm happy that
- 3:19Speaker 4: I've lived through. And I can still look in the
- 3:22Speaker 4: mirror over the choices that I've made in my musical career.
- 3:26Speaker 4: So you know, that's it. It's a journey.
- 3:29Speaker 6: I would say, just there have been times where I
- 3:34Speaker 6: felt like I've auditioned or done something where it was
- 3:37Speaker 6: like the guy was more favored, I guess you could say,
- 3:41Speaker 6: But at the same time, personally, I've just kept on,
- 3:45Speaker 6: Like Wendy said, and I like where I am, and
- 3:48Speaker 6: I like who I am. So I'm just I'm actually
- 3:51Speaker 6: very grateful. I think we all are to be women.
- 3:53Speaker 6: And I mean, you don't, you know, you just make
- 3:55Speaker 6: the best of whatever the times and the situations are.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think, you know, we look around at
- 4:03Speaker 5: these writers rounds in Nashville and usually we are the
- 4:06Speaker 5: only woman on stage. I mean, I can't tell you
- 4:08Speaker 5: how many times it's me and three other guys. It's
- 4:11Speaker 5: pretty much the most common way it goes. But I
- 4:14Speaker 5: think there's something really beautiful about being the only woman
- 4:18Speaker 5: up there and being able to represent women. And it
- 4:21Speaker 5: can be hard to look around and go, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 5: we're kind of walking different journeys with a lot of
- 4:27Speaker 5: the people in the music industry, but it's also beautiful.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I think this documentary will show some of the struggles
- 4:33Speaker 3: we have faced being a woman in music, but also
- 4:35Speaker 3: how powerful it is being a woman in music. And so,
- 4:38Speaker 3: what are all of your biggest female influences and music
- 4:43Speaker 3: some females you look up to?
- 4:45Speaker 4: Well, I've loved I love so many different genres, probably
- 4:48Speaker 4: like the rest of you. And so I grew up
- 4:51Speaker 4: my main source of inspiration was the greater Wreatha Franklin.
- 4:56Speaker 4: But I also you know, and I'm a lot older
- 4:58Speaker 4: than you guys, So I love the London Ronstats and
- 5:01Speaker 4: the Barbara Streissen's and the Dion Waricks because they were
- 5:04Speaker 4: just amazing, classic, beautiful singers who had amazing abilities and
- 5:12Speaker 4: a great quality. So that quality was always important to me.
- 5:17Speaker 4: What I'm singing, how I'm going to deliver, and the
- 5:20Speaker 4: message that I want to to offer to the world.
- 5:23Speaker 4: That always mattered. So the journey has been amazing, and
- 5:27Speaker 4: I'm continuing this with these beautiful ladies, this continued journey
- 5:32Speaker 4: of great music, song and the message that we want
- 5:34Speaker 4: to leave to the world.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I love that so much. I was very inspired
- 5:39Speaker 5: early by Taylor Swift. Of course, she's just such an
- 5:42Speaker 5: amazing songwriter and amazing at her business, and I mean,
- 5:46Speaker 5: her success speaks for itself. So she was the first
- 5:48Speaker 5: one that I really heard and was like, wow, I
- 5:51Speaker 5: want to do that. Honestly, when I was young, I
- 5:54Speaker 5: think I was doing this just to try to meet
- 5:56Speaker 5: Taylor Swift one day.
- 5:58Speaker 6: I was dreamly inspired as a child by like seventies
- 6:04Speaker 6: singer songwriters because I have an older brother that would
- 6:07Speaker 6: play them and also would play like Linda Ronstad and
- 6:10Speaker 6: a lot of classic rock and country rock and it
- 6:14Speaker 6: just kind of blew me away. But specifically the songwriters,
- 6:17Speaker 6: Like I heard the Joni Mitchell songs or Carol King
- 6:21Speaker 6: songs and I was like, wow, like songs, but I
- 6:25Speaker 6: was like eight, you know what I mean. So it
- 6:28Speaker 6: was like I wasn't like cognizant that I'm going to
- 6:30Speaker 6: do that one day, but I remember how they made
- 6:32Speaker 6: me feel right, and that kind of started it.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and our new single paved the way, kind of
- 6:38Speaker 3: shines a light on all of the women who have
- 6:40Speaker 3: influenced us and how will continue paving the way for
- 6:44Speaker 3: other artists. And so a couple more questions left for
- 6:48Speaker 3: you ladies. What is some advice for young women who
- 6:53Speaker 3: are wanting to pursue music. What would you tell them?
- 6:56Speaker 5: Get a good lawyer.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Absolutely right, yeah, get a good lawyer. You know, own
- 7:04Speaker 4: all your music, and you know it's important to own you.
- 7:10Speaker 6: I would say, stay true to your voice. Finding your
- 7:15Speaker 6: voice is so important because you're in a sea of voices. Yeah,
- 7:19Speaker 6: so when you look out, like Wendy and I were
- 7:22Speaker 6: talking about the other day, it can really like mess
- 7:25Speaker 6: up your whole perspective. So you really have to find
- 7:29Speaker 6: out what's inside of you and then let that voice
- 7:33Speaker 6: come out.
- 7:34Speaker 5: And I think you have to love it. If you
- 7:36Speaker 5: don't love it, it's just not going to happen. I
- 7:38Speaker 5: think you have to come from a place of this
- 7:41Speaker 5: is my gift, this is my passion, and this is
- 7:43Speaker 5: what I want to do forever.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Yeah, especially in an age where you're seeing a bunch
- 7:49Speaker 3: of artists on social media everywhere, it's so important to
- 7:52Speaker 3: know that it's your passion and to find your voice.
- 7:54Speaker 3: So I think that's all great advice. And lastly, since
- 7:58Speaker 3: we are on taking a walk Nowshville, I always ask
- 8:02Speaker 3: people on the show, where is your favorite place to
- 8:06Speaker 3: take a walk in Nashville? Delaney, I know you're in
- 8:08Speaker 3: Texas now, but maybe you have a favorite place like
- 8:10Speaker 3: in Clarksville or somewhere.
- 8:12Speaker 6: I can say. I like, well, I don't want to
- 8:15Speaker 6: say where I live, but it's in Hermitage and I
- 8:17Speaker 6: live on a circle, So I walk the circle all
- 8:20Speaker 6: the time and just to get my steps in and
- 8:22Speaker 6: I just love it.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm gonna just go Centennial Park. I would take
- 8:26Speaker 5: my dog down there and she loves to walk up
- 8:29Speaker 5: the steps and like, yeah, I'm gonna go Centennial Park.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Well, you know, I'm spoiled. I don't do that much walking. However,
- 8:36Speaker 4: if I'm in town, I'm gonna move forward. I go
- 8:38Speaker 4: down Broadways. Tons of food and tons of great music.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Not a bad place to take a walk unless it's
- 8:43Speaker 3: a Saturday night in Nashville. My favorite place is always
- 8:47Speaker 3: the Percy Warner Park near Bellevue. Thank you, ladies for
