- 0:03You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:08On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:11to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:14what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17The sermon you're about to listen to comes from our summer
- 0:202025 sermon series, Life together.
- 0:23In this series, we're. Looking at what the New
- 0:25Testament has to. Say about how we live together
- 0:28in Christian community. You can find more information
- 0:31about our church at fumccolleagueswith.org.
- 0:35Thanks for listening this. Morning Scripture personal
- 0:41favorite comes from Galatians chapter 5 starting verse 13.
- 0:48For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and
- 0:51sisters. But don't use your freedom to
- 0:55satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to
- 1:00serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed
- 1:05up in this one command. Love your neighbor as yourself.
- 1:10But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch
- 1:14out. Beware of destroying one
- 1:18another. So I say, let the Holy Spirit
- 1:22guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what
- 1:25your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do
- 1:29evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants.
- 1:34And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what
- 1:38the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly
- 1:43fighting each other. So you are not free to carry out
- 1:47your good intentions, but when you are directed by the Spirit,
- 1:51you are not under obligation to the Law of Moses.
- 1:56When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results
- 2:00are very clear. Sexual immorality, impurity,
- 2:04lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling,
- 2:10jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension,
- 2:17division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties and other sins like
- 2:23these. Let me tell you again as I have
- 2:26before, that anyone living the sort of life will not inherit
- 2:32the Kingdom of God, but the Holy Spirit produces this kind of
- 2:36fruit in our lives. Lovejoy, peace, patience,
- 2:42kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and
- 2:47self-control. There is no law against these
- 2:50things. Those who belong to Christ Jesus
- 2:54have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature
- 2:58to His cross and crucified them there.
- 3:02Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the
- 3:05spirits leading in every part of our lives.
- 3:08Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be
- 3:12jealous of one another. This is the Word of God for the
- 3:16people of God. Thanks be to God.
- 3:23Well, I've read a quick story this week that got me thinking.
- 3:28And in this story, there were two chefs, 2 chefs, working in
- 3:33the kitchen of a restaurant one night.
- 3:36And late in the evening, as they were approaching the end of the
- 3:40dinner service, both of the chefs went to fetch an orange
- 3:44for the dish that they were preparing.
- 3:47As they arrived in the area where the produce and stuff was
- 3:51being stored, they realized they were both going for the very
- 3:55last orange in the kitchen, right?
- 3:58So they they began to argue over who should get the last Argent.
- 4:02Who deserved to have the last Argent?
- 4:04They declared that that their dish would be ruined if they
- 4:08didn't have that orange. Their customers would be
- 4:11disappointed that it would look bad for the restaurant.
- 4:14And after going on like this for for quite some time, they they
- 4:18realized that they had to get on with their cooking.
- 4:20So they decided to cut the orange in half, neither of them
- 4:26getting what they really wanted or needed, which was a whole
- 4:31orange. The problem was that both of
- 4:35these chefs were insistent on their own perspective, right?
- 4:41They they could only see the situation as one in which there
- 4:45was inevitably a winner and a loser, right?
- 4:50Although they eventually reached a point where where they agreed
- 4:54to some kind of a compromise, it wasn't a compromise in which
- 4:57both parties won. Neither of them got what they
- 5:00really wanted and in the end, everyone lost, right?
- 5:05Both of the chefs who needed a whole orange for their recipe.
- 5:08The customers who ordered the dishes but knew nothing of the
- 5:12sudden orange shortage in the kitchen, however.
- 5:18However, if these two chefs had been willing to get even just a
- 5:24little bit curious, if they had been open to shifting their own
- 5:31perspective even slightly in order to see things from the
- 5:36others vantage point, they these chefs, they would have quickly
- 5:41realized that while one chef needed the zester, the peel of a
- 5:47whole orange to flavour a cake, the other chef needed the the
- 5:51juice of 1 orange in order to make a sauce.
- 5:57But because they stubbornly insisted on on only seeing
- 6:01things their own way, they both lost out when a solution existed
- 6:07that would have allowed both of them to succeed in the
- 6:13evangelical wing of the church. And, and let me just pause there
- 6:18for a moment, because I think if you watch the news or read the
- 6:23newspapers or see things online, I think evangelical has become
- 6:28something of a negative word in our day and age, right, due to
- 6:32its association with a politically minded religious
- 6:35right. But historically, the word
- 6:38evangelical had nothing to do with politics, right?
- 6:42In the 1970s, a British theologian and history historian
- 6:47by the name of DW Bebington, he defined evangelicalism by
- 6:53referencing 4 central commitments #1A high view of the
- 6:59authority of Scripture. Evangelicals hold a high view of
- 7:02the authority of Scripture. Second, an understanding of the
- 7:05centrality of Jesus's death and resurrection for human
- 7:09atonement. A belief #3A belief that people
- 7:14need to make a conscious turn away from their old life and a
- 7:18turn to Jesus. And finally, an insistence that
- 7:22faith in Jesus is actively expressed.
- 7:26It's actively lived out in efforts towards evangelism and
- 7:30missions. Right.
- 7:32Those are the four things. Nothing to do with with politics
- 7:36on either side of the aisle. And and we should be careful not
- 7:39to give up on words that have a profound meaning but have been
- 7:44Co opted into other narratives. So it's still OK to to be
- 7:49evangelical, right, Though that's what we mean when we say
- 7:53evangelical. Anyway, in the evangelical wing
- 7:56of the church, we've tended to hold one position where I think
- 8:00we would benefit from a shift in perspective like those two
- 8:06chefs. So here is that position that we
- 8:09hold when we talk about freedom and the freedom that we have in
- 8:15Christ. We tend to be focused on what
- 8:19we've been set free from, right? We emphasize the way that Jesus
- 8:26has set us free from the consequences of sin through
- 8:30taking our place, receiving the punishment that we deserve.
- 8:35We emphasize the way that Jesus set us free from the wages of
- 8:41sin, which is death, right along with an eternal future in hell.
- 8:48That's where we tend to focus and it's not wrong.
- 8:53It's definitely true there. There are clear themes all
- 8:56through the library of Scripture that talk about that, like the
- 8:59the Exodus, which was in and of it's a deliverance from slavery
- 9:05and oppression, right? It's a major motif that defines
- 9:08much of the story of scripture. Or take even the the idea of
- 9:13exile and return. What we're freed from is a key
- 9:18part of that message, but it doesn't go far enough, right?
- 9:24We, we need to know what we've been freed from, but we also
- 9:28need to know what we've been freed for, right?
- 9:34Not just what we've been freed from, but what we've been freed
- 9:37for. We, we need a perspective shift
- 9:42that to see. We need a perspective shift to
- 9:46see that we've been freed from all of those things, but we've
- 9:51also been set free for some things.
- 9:56As Paul wrote a little earlier in Galatians Chapter 5, he said
- 9:59it is for freedom that Christ set you free.
- 10:04Christ has set us free so that we can live for him, so we can
- 10:10walk in fellowship and union with him and and to represent
- 10:14his character to the world, pointing people to Jesus.
- 10:20So I want to take a look this morning at the teaching text
- 10:25that Jeremy just read for us. And I want to look at how Paul
- 10:30describes this shift, how he works it out and, and what it
- 10:34means for us today as we seek to be a church that does life
- 10:40together, right? We do life together.
- 10:45Paul's been writing throughout the book of Galatians, right?
- 10:49We're picking up here in chapter 5, verse 13.
- 10:52That means there's a whole lot that's come before where we are
- 10:56right now. But he's been writing throughout
- 10:57the book of Galatians about how because of what God had done
- 11:02through Jesus's death and his resurrection, it was no longer
- 11:07necessary to become part of the Jewish faith in order to follow
- 11:11Jesus, right? You see, there were, there were
- 11:15those who had come to believe in Jesus who came from a Jewish
- 11:20faith, right? That's what we see all through
- 11:21the Gospels is people coming to follow Jesus from within the
- 11:25Jewish faith primarily. And those people who did they,
- 11:30they saw a strong line of continuity between what God was
- 11:34doing through the Jewish people, right?
- 11:37We just have to read the Old Testament to see that
- 11:41continuity, though, between what God was doing there and what God
- 11:44was doing in and through Jesus, who they saw as the Jewish
- 11:50Messiah, right? The anointed one who was going
- 11:52to come and set them free. So, so these Jewish believers,
- 11:56they were insisting that everyone who came to faith in
- 12:01Jesus also had to become a Jew, right?
- 12:04They had to be circumcised and they had to follow the dietary
- 12:07laws and the the ceremonial laws and all these things.
- 12:13However, Paul in the early church quickly realized and
- 12:18began to teach that that because Jesus's sacrifice fulfilled the
- 12:23requirements of the Old Testament law, it was no longer
- 12:26necessary for Gentiles to convert to Judaism in order to
- 12:30be able to follow Jesus, to be part of the church.
- 12:35Right? And so much of Galatians is
- 12:37about that new reality, the freedom that we have as
- 12:40believers in Christ from our old ways of living, but also from
- 12:47that old law and trying to earn God's approval through it.
- 12:56But Paul also wanted to warn the church that that that freedom
- 13:00that we've been given, that that freedom we experience because
- 13:03we're in Christ. We can't abuse that freedom and
- 13:07the grace we've received, right? So picking up here in verse 13,
- 13:11that's exactly what Paul is talking about.
- 13:14He says we've been called to freedom, but that doesn't mean
- 13:19that we're now just free to live however we want to live just
- 13:25because we've been forgiven, right?
- 13:27Living in our freedom in Christ means that our freedom then
- 13:31takes on the character of Christ, which is we see all
- 13:36through the Gospels is a sacrificial love, right?
- 13:40It's it's a care and concern. It's a love that's willing to
- 13:43stoop and serve, love that'll wash feet even.
- 13:50This, Paul says, is what it truly means to love your
- 13:55neighbor, which is what God had commanded his people to do back
- 13:59in the Mosaic Law. But it's also the second-half of
- 14:03what Jesus says. It's the most important
- 14:05commandment, right? He told him to love the Lord
- 14:08your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love
- 14:12your neighbor as yourself. So as Christians, we are free
- 14:17from all those details of the law, but we're not free from the
- 14:21spirit of the law, right? God gave the the believers in
- 14:26the Old Testament all those laws to help them see how they were
- 14:30called to live what God wanted for them.
- 14:35We're not free from that reality, even if we're free from
- 14:39the details. We can't love our neighbors as
- 14:42ourselves, Paul says, if we're constantly tearing them down
- 14:47because love builds up. And then Paul moves into a
- 14:52discussion of the division right between living according to our
- 14:56sinful nature, which we all inherit from our first parents,
- 15:01whose disobedience welcomes sin into the world and and corrupted
- 15:05the good that God had created in US.
- 15:09And in contrast, our lives, when we follow that sinful nature
- 15:13with what our lives are are supposed to look like when we
- 15:16follow the Spirit of God, Paul describes it as a battle, right,
- 15:22where where these two forces are warring within us for control.
- 15:28And then this is where the distinction between what we've
- 15:31been freed from and what we've been freed for really gets
- 15:36worked out. Paul describes our our lives
- 15:40before Jesus, right? Lives lived to please the
- 15:43desires of our sinful natures. And he uses some pretty strong
- 15:49language, right? Those lives, he said, look like,
- 15:52and this isn't necessarily everyone, it's not a
- 15:55one-size-fits-all, but you can probably find yourself somewhere
- 15:58in here. He said those lives look like
- 16:00sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry,
- 16:05sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger,
- 16:09selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness,
- 16:15wild parties and other sins like these.
- 16:17Any questions? Did he leave anything out?
- 16:22Well, just in case he did, note that he said.
- 16:27And other sins like these. So even if yours isn't in there,
- 16:30it still counts, right? This is a list of examples, not
- 16:34an exhaustive list, but the gospel.
- 16:40But the gospel. The good news is that we've been
- 16:44set free from all of that because Jesus has redeemed us,
- 16:50right? He's bought us back.
- 16:51We're no longer do We have to live as slaves to sin because
- 16:57sin is no longer our master that we must obey.
- 17:02Jesus can set us free, not just from the consequences or the
- 17:07punishment of our sins on the cross.
- 17:13And then Jesus is rising again. He broke the power of sin in our
- 17:20lives, right? It's it's no longer automatic
- 17:24that we will continue to live according to this old way of
- 17:28life. Indeed, if we follow Jesus, if
- 17:31we say we follow Jesus, we cannot continue to live in those
- 17:38ways, right? And in line with with this
- 17:41freedom from these things. Paul then begins to describe
- 17:46what we are now free for. He talks about the fruit that
- 17:52the Spirit produces in our lives, this new way of living
- 17:56that's possible for us because Jesus died and rose for us, and
- 18:03the Spirit now dwells in each of us and in us together
- 18:08corporately. It looks like love and joy and
- 18:13peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness
- 18:18and gentleness and self-control. I want to note here when we talk
- 18:25about the fruit of the Spirit, this isn't a nice tray of cut
- 18:30fruit, right, Where you can pick and choose those things that you
- 18:34like. Oh, strawberries, yes.
- 18:37Mango, yes, honeydew, pass, right?
- 18:42Paul isn't describing the fruits plural of the Spirit, as if
- 18:49they're distinct, separate kinds of fruit.
- 18:53Paul's describing what the the He's describing the kind of
- 18:56nature that the Holy Spirit produces in our lives as we
- 19:01follow him and as we learn to yield more and more of ourselves
- 19:06and the control of our lives to him.
- 19:12He wants to produce all of that in US.
- 19:16If we belong to Christ, we can no longer be controlled by the
- 19:23attitudes and behaviors that marked our sinful nature.
- 19:28Right. And this is where it gets tricky
- 19:31because didn't Paul just say a couple verses ago that the
- 19:35sinful nature's at war with the Holy Spirit of God within us and
- 19:39and they're constantly fighting? Well, yeah, he did.
- 19:43He did. So we have to acknowledge that,
- 19:47but he also, he goes on to develop that idea and he says
- 19:50that if we belong to Jesus, that broken, fallen, sinful nature
- 19:58that's been nailed to the cross with Christ, with Jesus, it's
- 20:06been put to death. So now we can live according to
- 20:11the Spirit. We've been freed from the power
- 20:16of sin in our lives, and we've been freed for the Spirit to
- 20:21lead us and guide us. Don't miss this, friends.
- 20:27The Spirit of God in you is more powerful than your sinful
- 20:35nature. Did you hear that?
- 20:38The Spirit of God within you is more powerful than your sinful
- 20:46nature, your fallenness, and your brokenness.
- 20:50Don't get the final word. You can live in the power of the
- 20:55Holy Spirit, the power that can form you into a person of
- 20:59Lovejoy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
- 21:02faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
- 21:06Right? But you've got to choose.
- 21:10You've, you've got to choose. You've got to surrender to the
- 21:14leading of the Spirit in your life.
- 21:16You've got to submit to the lordship of Jesus as the master
- 21:22of your life. You've got to choose to follow
- 21:25the way of Jesus. We don't just come and ask for
- 21:30forgiveness and then keep go on living our lives.
- 21:34That's not how it works. You've got to choose to turn
- 21:38away from your old life. You've got to choose to crucify,
- 21:42to to nail to the cross those desires within you that are
- 21:47contrary to God's design and desire for you, for us.
- 21:54You've got to got to let God clear out all of that from
- 21:59within you to make space for Him to produce fruit in your lives.
- 22:06You've got to choose. It's, it's wild to think about,
- 22:10but God's not going to force you.
- 22:17He invites you, He makes it possible for you, but he's not
- 22:21going to force you to cooperate with his grace.
- 22:25He's not going to force you to to cooperate with the work he
- 22:29wants to do within your heart and your life.
- 22:35But the invitation's there, the power is there, the presence is
- 22:40there, and you can't say you follow Jesus and continue to
- 22:48indulge in those sinful desires within you.
- 22:53Doesn't mean you're not going to be tempted anymore.
- 22:56Doesn't mean you're not going to continue to struggle with some
- 22:59things. It doesn't mean that you're no
- 23:01longer able to sin, but it means that it's possible to not give
- 23:08in when you're tempted. It's possible to experience
- 23:12victory in your life. It's possible to live a life
- 23:16empowered by the Holy Spirit that pleases and honors God.
- 23:23It's possible for God to form his character and His nature in
- 23:29you because you're no longer a slave to sin.
- 23:34You've been set free to learn to love, to learn to serve, to
- 23:41learn to give yourself away just like Jesus did for you.
- 23:49This might be new to you. You might have grown up in a
- 23:53church that never taught you that, or that you might have
- 23:57grown up in a church that taught you that you can only ever be a
- 24:00Sinner who's been saved by grace, which is true, but it's
- 24:05only half the gospel, right? You you might have met Jesus
- 24:09somewhere along the way and come to believe that the best you can
- 24:13hope for is this back and forth struggle with the sin that had
- 24:18this grip on you. But at least we've got a God who
- 24:23who will forgive us as long as we can fast, right?
- 24:26And again, that's not wrong, but it's not the fullness of the
- 24:31gospel. So this morning he might be
- 24:35speaking to your heart about some things.
- 24:39You might need to come and meet with Jesus this morning, either
- 24:43for the first time or or maybe for some multiple time.
- 24:49You might need to ask Jesus to help you crucify those passions
- 24:54and desires of the sinful nature, to put them to death so
- 25:00that you can live in the freedom for which Christ has set you
- 25:05free, a freedom to live empowered and LED by the Holy
- 25:10Spirit. You might need to come and and
- 25:13surrender yourselves to Jesus, submit to his leadership, his
- 25:18lordship in your life, because you know you've been forgiven.
- 25:22But you're tired of trying to live with a foot in each canoe,
- 25:27right? What happens when you live with
- 25:28a foot in each canoe? You end up wet.
- 25:34Jesus told us that we can't serve 2 masters, and he offers
- 25:41you the choice of who you'll serve.
- 25:46Will you serve your old life, your sinful nature, the ways of
- 25:51this world? Or will you choose life in
- 25:56Christ? That's the offer.
- 26:00He wants to give you life. That is truly life.
- 26:08I'm going to pray. We're going to close the
- 26:10service. And wherever you are with all of
- 26:15this, you're invited to encounter Jesus this morning, to
- 26:24take up His offer for life. That is truly life.
- 26:32Let me pray for us, Jesus. We come to you today.
- 26:41This morning. We're grateful that you were
- 26:46willing to come and sacrifice yourself so that we could be
- 26:52forgiven, so we could be set free from the sin and death to
- 27:00which we were held in bondage. God, thank you for setting us
- 27:06free from those things. But also thank you, God, for
- 27:09setting us free for a life with you, a life that looks like you,
- 27:16a life in this world empowered by your spirit, a life of love
- 27:21and joy and peace and all those other things.
- 27:26God, we want you to form that fruit in us.
- 27:31We want you to form that kind of life in us.
- 27:35We want to truly live. We don't want to just go about
- 27:43our lives. And in this constant tension of
- 27:46of a foot in each canoe, wanting to serve Jesus, continuing to
- 27:53struggle with these sins that have a grip on us, you've come
- 28:00so that we could have abundant life.
- 28:05Would you help us? Would you help us put those
- 28:09things to death in our own lives?
- 28:13You've already taken them upon you on the cross.
- 28:19Would you help us appropriate that in our own lives?
- 28:23Would you apply that reality to us?
- 28:28Would you help us live in freedom?
- 28:35We give you ourselves this morning.
- 28:38Would you come and speak to us? Jesus, we pray this in your name
- 28:46and for your sake. Amen.
