Sam Silvers: Um, so w- we gave him that vaccination.
• 0:04
Um, w- we've, we've gave him like a Dectomax or an Ivomec injectable
• 0:09
for some internal/external parasites, things like that.
• 0:13
Um, we're probably gonna hit him with some kinda other wormer too, I would
• 0:17
say, maybe like, um, a Safeguard or a Valbazen or a Cydectin, something like
• 0:25
that to get some of those internals.
• 0:26
And then, and then we wanna, we wanna alternate those monthly, right?
• 0:30
  Right.
• 0:30
They need to be- Sure ... wormed every month.
• 0:32
I think that that's key, uh, for a lot of things.
• 0:36
And then we start talking about things like, like heel mites and stuff like that.
• 0:40
Um, there's a million different techniques out there.
• 0:57
  Logan Newsom: All right, guys.
• 0:57

• 1:59
Um, Logan's got a big one coming up tonight as we're shooting this, the 806
• 2:02
Live, some really good sheep in there.
• 2:04
Um, but like always, just reach out to us if you have any questions.
• 2:08
Logan Newsom: Okay, so we picked up, uh, you know, I guess, or pr- or picking up
• 2:11
where we left off with episode three.
• 2:15
Uh, we've got, we've got a good one in the barn, okay?
• 2:18
We've, we've went through, we've done all the checklists that we talked about.
• 2:22
Um, we found the one that we want.
• 2:23
  We wrote the check.
• 2:24
  We got him home.
• 2:26
  What now?
• 2:28
Sam Silvers: Uh, we keep him alive.
• 2:29
  Logan Newsom: Yeah.
• 2:30
Sam Silvers: That's the main part, I think.
• 2:32
Um, b- before we get into that, um, I thought you did a really
• 2:36
good job on your hair this morning.
• 2:37
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 2:38
  Yeah.
• 2:38
Sam Silvers: You got, you got lined up yesterday.
• 2:40
  Logan Newsom: I did.
• 2:40
  I got lined up.
• 2:41
Um, you know, I went to the barber.
• 2:44
I think we had a little, you know, for folks that listened on the
• 2:46
last one, we don't go to salons.
• 2:49
  Oh, okay.
• 2:49
Men go to barbers, barber shop.
• 2:51
  That's where we go.
• 2:52
  Um, yeah, cleaned up, nice.
• 2:55
  Sam Silvers: Looks good.
• 2:55
  Yeah.
• 2:56
  Cool.
• 2:56
  Logan Newsom: Beard oil.
• 2:57
  Everything's ready.
• 2:58
Sam Silvers: I wish I had hair.
• 3:00
Logan Newsom: We can work on that.
• 3:01
  That's in the next episode.
• 3:02
  Melatonin.
• 3:04
Get sponsored by some, one of those- Yeah, we- ... implant companies maybe.
• 3:06
  Yeah,
• 3:06
Sam Silvers: yeah, maybe, like Bosley for Men or something like that.
• 3:09
Logan Newsom: For those guys that, you know, don't know, Sam is at some point
• 3:13
probably gonna go across the pond and look at the hair implant deal, and
• 3:17
I would definitely am probably gonna be in attendance when he does that.
• 3:20
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 3:20
Y- you're gonna be my reference point.
• 3:22
Like, I, I want it like this, so I don't come back looking like, you
• 3:25
  know, Donald Trump or something.
• 3:28
Okay, so we got him home, right?
• 3:31
  Yeah.
• 3:31
We're, we're backing, we're backing up to the pens, and we're fixing
• 3:33
to unload this little booger, and, uh, w- where do we start?
• 3:37
That's a big question that we get a lot.
• 3:39
Um, and I think it's still something that, that changes yearly w- with me
• 3:44
of what we do as pre-regiment protocol.
• 3:47
Um, but some things that I like to think about is, um, y- you know,
• 3:52
gut health is important to me.
• 3:55
Um- Just immunity is important to me, um, i- and keeping those things,
• 4:01
obviously I know that sounds trivial, but keeping them alive and keeping
• 4:05
them on feed a- and trying to keep those bugs out of them, if you will.
• 4:09
Um- Sure ... so what are some things that you'll first do when you unload off
• 4:14
that trailer with, with that in mind?
• 4:15
Logan Newsom: Yeah, and I think that's, you know, like kind of what you said,
• 4:17
you know, the age-old saying, you know, like, sheep are looking for a place
• 4:20
to die, or goats, you know, whatever.
• 4:22
And not that, you know, that's 100% true, but, like, we're taking those animals
• 4:28
out of their environment that they've- were obviously born into, you know, maybe
• 4:32
they're fresh weaned, whatever that looks like, and then we'll put them into a
• 4:35
new environment, you know, maybe across the state, maybe across the country.
• 4:39
Um, you know, so not only just, you know, kind of health related, but that
• 4:44
whole environmental setting, s- the stress that can happen with weather
• 4:48
events and new pens and new dirt.
• 4:49
I mean, just, just all of it.
• 4:51
Other sheep, you know, they've been in maybe pens with, you know, their
• 4:54
buddies and, you know, creep pens and all that, you know, as they've
• 4:56
kind of grown out, and then all of a sudden, you know, we're kicking them
• 4:59
into a pen of, you know, maybe two or three at the house or whatever.
• 5:02
So you've put these animals into a stressful situation.
• 5:06
So I think that's probably the biggest thing that, you know, we have to sit back
• 5:09
and really think about is, like, how can we manage that stress, because I do think
• 5:14
that's probably the beginning point of a lot of the things that can go wrong.
• 5:19
Um, you know, so like whenever we, whenever we get those home and
• 5:23
we get them and, you know, we're, we're big, especially early on,
• 5:27
kind of group pens type situation.
• 5:29
We don't ever wanna put anything just in a pen by itself, you
• 5:32
  know, or anything like that.
• 5:33
So we might put them in a pen of, you know, three or four more, and, um, I
• 5:37
think the biggest thing is you obviously gotta, first and foremost, like,
• 5:41
they've gotta figure out where feed is.
• 5:42
They gotta figure out where the water is.
• 5:44
They gotta figure out where the hay is.
• 5:45
You know, just kind of like, "Hey, here's your new home.
• 5:48
Let's get those things on feed.
• 5:50
  Let's make sure they drink.
• 5:52
Let's make sure they're eating." Because those animals that are eating and, you
• 5:55
know, drinking, obviously, you know, at the beginning level of that health
• 5:59
stage are obviously gonna do better.
• 6:02
  Yeah.
• 6:02
And so that's always kind of like first and foremost, you know,
• 6:04
kind of maybe where we start.
• 6:07
Sam Silvers: Yeah, a- and I think we do too.
• 6:08
Um, Dr. Chris Cassidy, who's on our tech support team at BioZyme, i- big in the
• 6:14
cattle world, he always says something that, that kind of sticks with me is, "We
• 6:18
need to be proactive and not reactive."
• 6:20
  Sure.
• 6:21
  Right?
• 6:22
Um, a- and I think in, in general health and maintenance of, of these small
• 6:26
ruminants, that's what I look at is, is let's be proactive and not reactive, and
• 6:30
what I mean by that is let's, let's try to offset any of these problems we're gonna
• 6:34
have before we ever get there, not just reactionary, like, "Oh, that one's sick.
• 6:38
Now I need to doctor him." I wanna prevent him from ever getting sick, and I, I think
• 6:42
  environment's really important, right?
• 6:44
  Good clean pens.
• 6:45
Um, y- you know, let him, let him co-mingle with some others.
• 6:49
Doesn't need to be stressed out by himself.
• 6:51
Um- That's something that we do, you know, all the time at our house.
• 6:55
If we have a customer that comes and picks up, maybe they buy one lamb,
• 6:59
the first question I'll ask them when they're picking them up is, "Hey, do you
• 7:02
have any other animals at h- at home?"
• 7:04
  Logan Newsom: Yeah.
• 7:04
"Do you need a feeding buddy?" You know-
• 7:05
" Sam Silvers: Do you need a feeding buddy?" A- and I'll, I'll
• 7:07
send a feeding buddy with them.
• 7:09
  Sure.
• 7:09
Usually it's one that's not very good or, or maybe it's a DD or something like that.
• 7:13
  But-
• 7:13
Logan Newsom: Ewe lamb type deal.
• 7:14
Sam Silvers: Ewe lamb- Like you had a bunch.
• 7:15
Yep ... and I just tell them, "Hey, you, you bring it back when you get another
• 7:18
one or, you know, haul it to the sale barn later and, and, and send me the
• 7:22
check. But I, I want that, that good one they bought off to a good start."
• 7:26
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 7:26
  Yeah.
• 7:26
And I think that's, you know, something that, you know, we're
• 7:29
probably in a situation where there's always sheep at the house, right?
• 7:32
You know, I mean, so it's easy for, you know, and even like breeders or, you
• 7:35
know, families that might have multiple kids and feed a lot of them, but some
• 7:38
of those families that maybe they just feed one or two or, you know, maybe
• 7:41
they're going to an ag facility type deal and maybe they're the first ones that,
• 7:45
you know, might have bought something.
• 7:47
So like, I think that's important.
• 7:48
Like again, you know, it's kind of going back to that whole stress deal.
• 7:50
Like you don't wanna just take those things from day one and we're gonna
• 7:54
pull 'em out of, you know, wean them- Yep ... move them, all the stuff, and then
• 7:58
boom, put 'em into a pen by their self.
• 8:01
I think that's just kind of almost like, you know, the recipe for a
• 8:03
disaster in terms of just things not getting a good start early on.
• 8:07
  Yeah.
• 8:08
So what is, like whenever we're kind of talking about that, you know, we'll kind
• 8:11
of hit on this and kind of, you know, as we kind of go down that road and, you
• 8:14
know, again, as we kind of work through this, this is obviously things that we do.
• 8:18
I'm not by any means sitting here saying that it, you know,
• 8:20
has to be done like that.
• 8:21
I mean, this is just things that we've done that we felt like, you know, have
• 8:24
worked for each one of our families and, and our management programs.
• 8:28
But what is, what is that kind of that, you know, maybe some vaccines,
• 8:32
deworming protocol, like what's kind of that protocol look like
• 8:35
as far as day one, let's say day one to like seven, you know- Yeah
• 8:38
kind of what that looks like that first week?
• 8:40
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 8:40
And, and I, I know it's gonna probably differ, but there's some
• 8:44
things in my mind that I always worry about o- on, on fresh lambs.
• 8:47
A- and one is cocci, right?
• 8:51
  Um, two is, is respiratory.
• 8:55
  I'm worried about that.
• 8:56
So I'm worried about cocci, I'm worried about respiratory, and
• 8:59
then probably three, the big one for me now with this whole leg
• 9:02
  wool thing is external parasites.
• 9:04
  Sure.
• 9:04
What I mean by like, uh, um, y- you know, heel mites, things of that nature, uh,
• 9:10
maybe ear ticks, and then probably lastly I'm gonna worry about, um, like CDT,
• 9:16
overeating tetanus, that kind of thing, um, and maybe some internal parasites.
• 9:21
So I guess that's six core things- That we're gonna focus on ... uh, what
• 9:24
I would call the core things that I wanna, I, I wanna manage and get rid of.
• 9:27
Um, you know, so when we unload, um, everything's, uh, first thing
• 9:34
that's gonna happen is, you know, you know, Jurahee big on that.
• 9:36
Jurahee will come out and she's gonna check 'em for heel mites first thing.
• 9:39
That's what she does while I'm probably, you know, treating them for some cocci
• 9:43
regiment, um, or maybe I'm giving them a, a shot of Nuflor or something
• 9:48
  like that just for respiratory.
• 9:50
Or I'm deworming with, like, Dectomax to, to help with some
• 9:53
  external parasites, things like that.
• 9:55
Um, a- and we'll get into those later, but I, I just y- you know, that's
• 9:59
something we all check for right there, right off the bat as we're unloading.
• 10:02
Logan Newsom: And then, you know, obviously with Jurahee, and, uh, that
• 10:06
doesn't surprise me at all that she's, like, the leg wool, you know, queen.
• 10:10
  Sam Silvers: Nazi.
• 10:11
  Yeah.
• 10:11
Logan Newsom: Like, uh, do you start wrapping them immediately?
• 10:14
Sam Silvers: Uh, not immediately, but she will wrap them within
• 10:17
  probably the first two weeks.
• 10:19
  Logan Newsom: Yeah, inside joke.
• 10:20
We'll obviously get into that, um, probably- ... in later episodes, but,
• 10:23
uh, Jurahee definitely is the person to probably reach out if you need
• 10:28
to talk to someone in the Silvers household about leg wool regimen.
• 10:31
Um, yeah, so, like, you know, similar-
• 10:33
Sam Silvers: I've taught her everything she knows.
• 10:34
  Logan Newsom: Yeah.
• 10:34
Similar situation to what we do.
• 10:36
Um, you know, I, I think that, you know, the CDT deal, like we talk about that,
• 10:42
and kind of our rule of thumb in growing up was always, like, any time you move
• 10:45
them to fresh dirt, you know, hopefully you got those, those animals from
• 10:50
someone that has a good vaccine program.
• 10:52
Most breeders, you know, if not all, you know, are obviously taking care
• 10:55
of that, and, um, those things have probably had, you know, their initial
• 10:59
one and then probably a booster, you know, maybe at some point.
• 11:01
That's kinda what we try to do.
• 11:03
But we still always, like, we'll CDT them whenever we get them in, and then
• 11:05
kinda like what you said, like some sort of internal/external parasite program.
• 11:10
Um, we do different things as far as, you know, kind of our cocci treatment.
• 11:14
Um, we do have, like, a medicator, you know, so that's something that, you
• 11:18
know, at various points, whether it's, um, what we try to run through and kinda
• 11:24
what we try to do is, you know, some sort of coccidiosis protocol in the water,
• 11:28
and then, you know, we might rotate it, like, with the product, like, you know,
• 11:32
that BioZyme has there to kinda always kinda put back some good bugs and, you
• 11:36
know, just kinda rotate, rotate that.
• 11:38
But again, I think it's one of those deals that goes back to that whole
• 11:40
deal of, you know, trying to l- trying to limit our stress, you know, and
• 11:45
get those things off to a good start.
• 11:47
  Yeah.
• 11:47
Like, we've all been there, and, and it can happen to, you know,
• 11:50
  obviously the best families.
• 11:52
Like, but it g- at the end of the day, it can happen, you know, to anyone.
• 11:54
Like, if those things have a hiccup whenever you first get started,
• 11:58
it seems like even if it's little, like, all of a sudden you're a little
• 12:02
behind the eight ball, and you're-
• 12:03
Sam Silvers: And then you're, and then you're chasing
• 12:04
it ... and you're just chasing-
• 12:05
Logan Newsom: You're chasing it ... the whole time.
• 12:05
Like, you're just trying to get better, trying to get, you know, trying to get
• 12:08
those things better and, you know, and it's almost like one of those deals, like
• 12:11
when that first domino falls, like one small thing can turn into a big thing,
• 12:15
and then all of a sudden, you know, we have, again, we talked about, you know,
• 12:18
like, as we kinda introed this, this episode, environmental changes, like
• 12:23
we're in, uh, you know, Texas Panhandle, Central Texas, you know, Southwest.
• 12:28
Like, we're fixing to get into the middle of summer.
• 12:30
  Days are gonna be 100.
• 12:31
Like, trying to keep those things cool.
• 12:33
They might not eat as well.
• 12:34
And so then all of a sudden, you know, what started off as maybe, um,
• 12:38
an issue that could've been treated with three days of medication or, you
• 12:43
know, a, a good, good practice early on- Here we are, and, you know, those
• 12:48
things get skinny, and you're just like, "Dude, we're, we're in trouble.
• 12:52
It's summertime, it gets hot, they're not eating great." And then you're
• 12:55
fighting that all summer long, and it seems like you can't ever catch
• 12:58
up until, like, almost the fall.
• 13:00
Like we, you know- Yeah ... we've kind of ran into those situations before.
• 13:03
Sam Silvers: And I, I think this is, this is the point, too, when you get home, that
• 13:07
you need to have a really good established relationship with a veterinarian.
• 13:12
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 13:12
Sam Silvers: A small ruminant ve- veterinarian, one that
• 13:14
  knows small ruminants.
• 13:15
'Cause this is where it's gonna come, come key, because there's so many
• 13:18
things out there not labeled for sheep and goats, and you just have to
• 13:22
have a, a really good veterinarian.
• 13:25
Logan Newsom: Yeah, a good relationship.
• 13:27
  And that's the deal.
• 13:27
And like we're fortunate, you know, like we live in areas where, you know,
• 13:32
veterinarians are, are available, especially on, you know, small ruminant
• 13:37
side, and, you know, guys that maybe not necessarily are, like, as in tune with
• 13:42
maybe sheep, but like, you know, they've been around livestock, large animal stuff.
• 13:47
  Yeah.
• 13:47
  You know?
• 13:48
And I know that probably some of our listeners, 'cause we've got some of
• 13:50
those families that, you know, they run into that deal of like, okay,
• 13:53
you know, and this is obviously stereotypically speaking, but like
• 13:57
bigger cities, like, you know, small animal clinics are on every corner,
• 14:01
but like getting any assistance from someone that knows something about
• 14:05
maybe large animals can be challenging.
• 14:07
So, you know, we have some of those families that, you know, might be in
• 14:10
some of those areas, and I'm like, "Hey, call this guy. I know he's, you know,
• 14:14
three hours away from you, five hours away, whatever, but like we've gotta
• 14:17
have a relationship with some sort of, you know, um, you know, vet that can-
• 14:24
Mm-hmm ... that can help us kinda get through some of those situations."
• 14:26
Because even, you know, me personally that feel like I've seen as many issues
• 14:31
that can go wrong, sheep and goats, you know, from lambing all the way through
• 14:35
the show world, you still run into those deals of like, "What is going
• 14:39
on here?" Like, how can I... You know, I've done this and I've done that.
• 14:43
And even it's s- good just to, like, have dialogue with those guys, you know?
• 14:46
  Sam Silvers: Absolutely.
• 14:47
Logan Newsom: Like, "Hey, this is what I'm seeing." Like, and
• 14:49
  just, you know, different ideas.
• 14:50
"Hey, will you try this?" Or, "Hey, we're using this, you know, medication
• 14:53
a lot on respiratory issues and having great success." Something I hadn't
• 14:57
thought of, something I hadn't heard of.
• 14:58
Maybe it's something new, you know.
• 14:59
Have a good relationship with those guys.
• 15:01
  Like it's- Yeah ... imperative.
• 15:02
  A-
• 15:02
Sam Silvers: and we're probably gonna... You know, I know as we go
• 15:05
through this, we're gonna make some suggestions on some products, um, that,
• 15:09
that we use and work great for us.
• 15:11
Uh, but the number one thing is, is, and I'll caution the
• 15:14
audience, is don't just go do it.
• 15:16
  Consult your veterinarian first-
• 15:17
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 15:18
Sam Silvers: Yeah ... be- before we, before you do anything.
• 15:20
Um, I, I think it's imperative that we s- we say some of the products
• 15:24
on here that we're gonna use.
• 15:25
Um, but always consult your veterinarian first before you do anything.
• 15:29
Logan Newsom: I like to joke with our families, and I say this,
• 15:31
you know, 100% in a joking manner that, like, I'm a practicing vet.
• 15:36
The state of Texas just doesn't recognize it.
• 15:38
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 15:39
  You know?
• 15:39
Logan Newsom: Like we see enough things that, uh- You know, sometimes some of
• 15:42
those vets might actually probably, you know, have some dialogue with me
• 15:46
and be like- Right ... "Wait, you saw what?" Yeah, but the state of Texas does
• 15:49
not recognize me, so please make sure and contact your local veterinarian-
• 15:53
  Sam Silvers: Local veterinarian
• 15:53
  practice.
• 15:54
So let- let's drill down on some of those products, right?
• 15:57
Um, whi- which seems common to us, but it might not to others.
• 16:00
So CD&T, why are we, why are we giving them two cc's of
• 16:04
CD&T when we get them home?
• 16:06
  Logan Newsom: Yeah, so that's a, uh, you know, that's a... And I, I
• 16:09
think CD&T is, is kind of a funny, um, you know, vaccination practice.
• 16:15
I remember growing up and showing, and, like, our protocol at the
• 16:19
beginning of every month was we gave CD&T and we dewormed them.
• 16:23
  So monthly we gave that.
• 16:26
And I would say personally, we've, we've kind of gotten away from that.
• 16:31
Um, that was maybe a Papa K deal that, you know, he just, he just
• 16:34
always did and so that, you know, that's what we did for a long time.
• 16:37
But now I would say our practice is probably maybe every 60
• 16:44
  to 90 days on a CD&T booster.
• 16:47
Um, again, you know, we talked about that early on, like, that is a, that is
• 16:52
a vaccination for sheep and goats that your, your breeder probably did early on.
• 16:57
  Mm-hmm.
• 16:57
Um, personally, what we try to do is we hit the ewes before they lamb, um,
• 17:03
so that hopefully some of that can be passed along in the colostrum or
• 17:06
in the milk, and then we'll hit those lambs whenever we usually tag and...
• 17:11
Or I guess not tag, but, you know, whenever we band
• 17:13
  tails, mark sheep, whatever.
• 17:14
And then we'll usually hit them again whenever, you know, we
• 17:17
kind of call it our booster.
• 17:18
Hopefully, you know, kind of in that, I'd say 45 to 60 days, maybe kind
• 17:22
  of pre-sale timeframe, whatever.
• 17:24
And so those sheep and goats have hopefully had at least two shots.
• 17:28
  Yeah.
• 17:29
I mean, that's pretty standard, I would say, across the board.
• 17:32
And then we try to come in, again, like I said... And Papa K used to always
• 17:36
say anytime you move them to new dirt.
• 17:38
You know, I know that, and I'm not gonna sit here and act like I'm, you
• 17:42
know, Clostridium perfringens, you know, expert, but it is a, you know,
• 17:46
bacteria that, that can be, you know, in the dirt, and so in the soil.
• 17:50
And so any- I always tell those families whenever they take one home, "Hey,
• 17:53
they've had two shots. Go ahead and hit them with a booster. Just kind of
• 17:57
cover your bases there." It's easy.
• 18:00
  It's cheap.
• 18:00
  Cheap.
• 18:01
It's just such a good, like- Yeah ... safety net.
• 18:03
Like, because CD&T is one of those that's very unique.
• 18:07
Like, there's no, "Hey, I think they might have CD&T."
• 18:11
Like, they're either there or they're dead.
• 18:14
  I mean, that's- Yeah ... the reality.
• 18:15
Like, it happens- Yeah ... fast.
• 18:16
It's not something you can necessarily treat.
• 18:19
Um, it's just something that, you know, kind of comes on, comes on quick.
• 18:22
And then obviously, you know, the tetanus piece that's in, that, that's would be
• 18:25
the T in that, in that particular vaccine.
• 18:27
So that's, you know, I guess, a little bit of the why.
• 18:31
You know, not diving too far into it.
• 18:33
Obviously, anyone can- You know, Google and kind of, you know- Yeah ... get
• 18:36
you some knowledge on, you know, that particular d- disease or, uh-
• 18:40
Sam Silvers: For the pre- prevention of tetanus and clostridial- Prevention,
• 18:43
yep, yep, yep ... type bacterias that, that can really affect them.
• 18:45
And, and I think probably help ward off, um, some subclinical acidosis.
• 18:53
I think we see a lot of that in, in the summer times when we're feeding them high
• 18:57
grain loads and we're trying to push them, um, and we mask it with other things.
• 19:01
You know, uh, they might get the, the feed scours or something- Sure ... and
• 19:04
we, we write it off as, "Oh, it's cocci," or, "It's this or that," when it may
• 19:08
just be a little subclinical acidosis.
• 19:10
  Logan Newsom: Yep, yep.
• 19:12
Yeah, so like that's, you know, that's kind of one of the ones, and I would
• 19:14
say if we were talking just vaccines for sheep and goats, like that's
• 19:19
probably like the main one, you know?
• 19:20
  Yeah.
• 19:21
Um, something that we've done as of late, and again, you know, I, I felt like this
• 19:26
episode was definitely one that we'll probably reference it multiple times, talk
• 19:29
to your vet, see what works in your area.
• 19:31
We've been doing the nasal vaccination.
• 19:32
  Mm-hmm.
• 19:33
And I think that's kind of helped.
• 19:34
We talked about respiratory there early, and what we try to do is we
• 19:37
do it, uh, again, you know, kind of going back to that on the breeding
• 19:40
side of it, we try to do it to those babies whenever we mark tails.
• 19:43
But as those sheep have come in and those goats have come in, that's
• 19:48
been something that we've also kind of utilized in our program.
• 19:51
'Cause I think the hard part that we deal with in the Texas Panhandle in,
• 19:55
in this time of the year, and it's, it's always, you know, I would say from
• 20:00
March till, you know, probably kind of the end of May that we kind of fight.
• 20:04
And I know other parts of the world, you know, in the country it can be
• 20:07
similar, but we might be 95 and then cold front blows in, or, you know,
• 20:14
it gets cool at night, but we just have these constant swings in temps.
• 20:17
  Swings.
• 20:18
You know, and it's, and it's 40, 40 degrees sometimes.
• 20:21
And so, you know, we all know kind of how, what that can lead to,
• 20:24
you know, as far as especially s- the, you know, ruminant animals.
• 20:27
  Yeah.
• 20:28
And so respiratory deal for us is, like huge.
• 20:32
  I mean, it's just, it's a constant battle.
• 20:34
It's something that we constantly kind of fight this time of year.
• 20:36
Once we kind of level off, we get into the summer, seems like things might
• 20:39
kind of, you know, clear up a little.
• 20:41
But like, again, we talked about it, you know, kind of the stress, the
• 20:44
new environment, all the things that, you know, can go into that and play
• 20:47
that role, and then all of a sudden, you know, you put those animals...
• 20:50
You know, let's say I bought one from you, maybe y'all have been warmer,
• 20:53
you know, a little more kind of even keel as far as the weather goes.
• 20:56
I take them to Plainview and, you know, we wake up one morning, it was
• 21:00
95 yesterday, and all of a sudden it's like, oh, hey, it's gonna be 37.
• 21:04
  Yeah.
• 21:04
You know, so the stress that that can kind of, you know, how, and how that can impact
• 21:07
those things, it, it, it can be tough.
• 21:09
  It can be challenging.
• 21:10
We've all had them, you know, like you come out there and like kids had set that
• 21:14
sheep up the night before, life's good, everything looks good, and that thing's
• 21:16
like thumping and sick the next morning.
• 21:18
You're like- Yeah ... "Damn, we got a problem."
• 21:20
Sam Silvers: So we, we gave them the CD&T.
• 21:22
  Um, I, I don't...
• 21:25
Are, are you, are you a proponent of, of giving an antibiotic- As
• 21:29
a prevention if they're not sick?
• 21:31
I, I wanted to ask you that question.
• 21:33
  I-
• 21:33
  Logan Newsom: We don't
• 21:34
  ... Sam Silvers: I typically don't.
• 21:34
  Logan Newsom: Yeah, we don't.
• 21:35
I mean, I'm more, you know, probably in, in that aspect, you know, kinda going back
• 21:40
to that, you know, reactive, proactive, whatever on, on the antibiotic side, like
• 21:44
I'm gonna, I'm gonna wait, you know- Yeah
• 21:46
and kinda see just, just so that, um, you know, kinda get those things in.
• 21:51
And I think also because, like we might give them, you know,
• 21:54
let's say like a Dectomax, something for internal parasites.
• 21:57
We've given them a CDT shot.
• 21:58
  We deworm them.
• 21:59
We've kinda already like hit those things with a couple different things,
• 22:01
so I'm just kinda like, "Yeah, let's, let's wait, and let's just kinda make
• 22:04
sure they're, you know, eating good."
• 22:06
Now, if we see something we don't like or that things maybe, you
• 22:09
know, cousin has his ears down, acts like he doesn't feel good, you
• 22:12
know, then we're gonna jump on it.
• 22:13
But we're probably not as much on the antibiotic deal of giving something
• 22:19
as- Yeah ... soon as they come in.
• 22:21
  Yeah.
• 22:21
Sam Silvers: Um, so w- we gave him that vaccination.
• 22:25
Um, w- we've, we've gave him like a Dectomax or an Ivomec injectable
• 22:30
for some internal/external parasites, things like that.
• 22:34
Um, we're probably gonna hit him with some kinda other wormer too, I would
• 22:39
say, maybe like, um, a Safeguard or a Valbazen or a Cydectin, something like
• 22:46
that to get some of those internals.
• 22:48
And then, and then we wanna, we wanna alternate those monthly, right?
• 22:52
  Right.
• 22:52
They need to be- Sure ... wormed every month.
• 22:54
I think that that's key, uh, for a lot of things.
• 22:57
And then we start talking about things like, like heel mites and stuff like that.
• 23:02
Um, there's a million different techniques out there.
• 23:05
Um, y- you know, something that we do, um, is we, we like to put, um, m- we
• 23:14
like to put the, the Ivomec pour-on on their heels to, to try to get those heel-
• 23:18
Logan Newsom: Do you just, like, put that in a spray bottle?
• 23:20
Sam Silvers: Like- No, we just put it on there with our hands.
• 23:22
We'll get them on the stand.
• 23:23
We just kind of- Just kind of- ... pour it on there on the back of their heels.
• 23:26
Um, and then we'll just kinda rub that in, let it set a while.
• 23:28
And we may do that for three or four days in a row just to try to get as much
• 23:33
heel mites, 'cause it seems like when you lose that hair right around that,
• 23:38
y- you know, right around their heel or their hoof line, it's hard to ever get
• 23:42
it back, and it just looks kinda weird.
• 23:44
Logan Newsom: Well, and I think
• 23:45
as we talk about that and, you know, and you kinda hit on it a little bit,
• 23:47
like obviously, you know, we're trying to manage that because, you know, the
• 23:52
leg wool deal is, is, is a, is a thing that we, you know, are paying attention
• 23:56
to and trying to be aware of, you know?
• 23:58
And, and so early on, and I always joke with people, like sheep are stupid,
• 24:02
but I, I don't believe that they just wake up one day and think, "I would
• 24:05
like to chew off all of my leg wool."
• 24:07
  Yeah.
• 24:07
Like, while you're at school and this leg wrap came off or, you know, you're
• 24:11
at work, I think I would like to just eat this show side front leg to the bone.
• 24:15
  Right?
• 24:16
  There's a reason for that.
• 24:17
  Yeah.
• 24:17
There's a reason that they did it, um, not just 100%, you know,
• 24:21
  because of their intelligence level.
• 24:22
And so the reason, you know, might be that there was something there that was
• 24:26
obviously bothering them, and then it kind of becomes, you know, just this,
• 24:29
you know, 100% this domino effect.
• 24:30
And so, you know, for the listeners out there, we're, you know, we kind
• 24:33
of, as we kind of talk about, you know, external parasites and what
• 24:36
we're, what we're talking about in that capacity is, you know, why those
• 24:39
things might be trying to mess with their legs- Yeah ... chew, et cetera.
• 24:43
Sam Silvers: So from that point, we, you know, we've got them vaccinated
• 24:46
  and we've got them dewormed.
• 24:47
We- we've, we've looked at this hill mite issue.
• 24:50
Um, to, to me it's about, y- you know, getting them hungry and
• 24:54
keeping their immune system in check.
• 24:55
You, you talked about having a, um, y- uh, what do you call, a medicator- Yeah
• 25:02
... which we, we have a medicator in our barn.
• 25:03
It's something that we didn't do until last year, but I, I think it's the best
• 25:07
300 bucks I've ever spent in my life.
• 25:08
  Sure.
• 25:09
  Um, Dosatron one to 128.
• 25:13
Um, y- you know, if we're having some cocci issues or something
• 25:16
like that, we can dose some Corid through it, or we can run some
• 25:19
  sulfadimetox- dimethazine through it.
• 25:22
Um, but the big thing to me is, is I like running some Liquid Boost through there.
• 25:26
  Yeah.
• 25:26
Um, I, I think Liquid Boost is a great product for as far
• 25:29
  as just gut health, immunity.
• 25:31
It's got some B vitamins in it, zinc, biotin.
• 25:34
Anytime an, a sheep or a goat is under stress, they're gonna get some of that.
• 25:38
If they get an antibiotic shot, if they're sick, whatever, I'm gonna give them some,
• 25:42
some Liquid Boost, or I may, I may pulse it through that medicator for, you know,
• 25:47
a week, come off, go on another week without it, maybe come back another week.
• 25:53
  Uh, I think that's important.
• 25:54
Logan Newsom: Yeah, and that's, and that's like the same thing we do in, in, and, you
• 25:56
know, we talk about the Liquid Boost and, you know, um, obviously Sam, you know,
• 26:00
gets paid to give, you know- ... Bio-Zyme and Durafirm the plug, but I don't.
• 26:04
Um, Alan, feel free to reach out if you'd like to sponsor.
• 26:08
Um, but, but the Liquid Boost deal is, is something that we
• 26:11
really, really, um, we believe in.
• 26:13
And, and again, I think it kind of goes back, you know, we talked
• 26:16
about that on the medication side, like our medicator is running with
• 26:19
something in it at all points.
• 26:21
Not necessarily always, you know, quote-unquote medication.
• 26:24
If we're, if we're running some Corid or some sulfa or maybe even some of, you
• 26:28
know, the powdered linco, some of the different things that we do, I always try
• 26:31
to follow that up immediately with, you know, the Liquid Boost or the concentrate.
• 26:35
I know you said that, you know, you use the, the red one, Liquid Boost.
• 26:38
  Mm-hmm.
• 26:38
We use the- Hydro Boost ... Hydro Boost, the concentrate and the blue one.
• 26:41
Um, but I also think, and this is just a, an observation that I've noticed
• 26:46
and I've always wanted to put like a water meter on our, on our medicator.
• 26:50
When we're running Hydro Boost, I feel like they drink more.
• 26:53
Like I don't know if there's a flavoring in there or they're, maybe they're just
• 26:56
feeling good or whatever it is, but like, it always seems like when we're running
• 27:01
that, and this is just me noticing on the, on the medicator, you know, and
• 27:05
how fast, you know, whatever is, you know, whatever product is going down.
• 27:09
When Hydro Boost is in there- They're drinking more Yeah.
• 27:11
  Yeah.
• 27:12
That's probably something y'all put in there to sell more of it.
• 27:14
  Absolutely.
• 27:15
It has to be a new-
• 27:16
Sam Silvers: It's trade, trade secrets right there.
• 27:17
  Trade secrets, yep.
• 27:18
Um, so do we, do we wanna talk about cocci?
• 27:21
And, you know, that's something I feel like we all face, and y-
• 27:25
you know, what, what do we...
• 27:27
what do y'all do at Newsom Livestock for, for prevention of cocci, to treat cocci?
• 27:31
  I know there's a, there's a million different things out there that
• 27:34
people do that, that work, right?
• 27:36
Um, I, the biggest one is, again, talk to your veterinarian.
• 27:41
Um, something for us at home is, is we're big on making sure that rumensin is in...
• 27:47
It's not labeled for sheep, it's labeled for goats, I know that, but to me rumensin
• 27:51
is key to, to really stopping, uh, cocci.
• 27:55
A- and the best way that it was described to me is, this has been years ago, is
• 28:02
rumensin will kill cocci at any point in the life cycle, or stop it at any point.
• 28:08
Whereas some of those other ones, it, it'll only hit it at a certain
• 28:12
stage in the life cycle of cocci.
• 28:14
  Hmm.
• 28:15
So that's why rumensin's, to me, is important having it in the diet.
• 28:18
Logan Newsom: Yeah, and, and you know, that's obviously a, you know, a product
• 28:21
that's, that's big in our world, big in the sheep and the goat world.
• 28:24
You know, again, you know, maybe whatever you call that, extra label, off-label,
• 28:27
you know, however you wanna, you know, kinda, kinda talk about it or go about it.
• 28:31
Um, so obviously a product that's in, you know, the, the, the feed.
• 28:35
  It's already mixed in.
• 28:36
So, you know, if you're, if you're listening out there, that's not
• 28:39
something you go and buy off the shelf.
• 28:40
That's not something you go to your feed store and ask them, you know, where,
• 28:43
  where they're keeping their rumensin.
• 28:44
  Yeah.
• 28:45
Um, but yeah, cocci to me, and what we see, is probably one of
• 28:50
  the most challenging... Gosh.
• 28:54
Um, cocci to me is probably one of the most challenging things that I
• 28:58
think we face and our customers face, especially during the summer and maybe
• 29:03
  while those animals are developing.
• 29:05
Or, you know, you talk about rumen development and, you
• 29:07
  know, just things like that.
• 29:08
But just as they're growing, as they're developing, and I think the
• 29:11
thing that I probably see that can be the most challenging is maybe
• 29:16
originally you think about coccidiosis and you think bloody scours.
• 29:21
Like, that's always kind of been a, you know, a thing that, you know,
• 29:24
  people kind of correlated with.
• 29:26
What I've noticed and what we've seen is like, and I call it low-grade cocci,
• 29:31
it seems like they might not have to be scouring, and they could have just
• 29:36
enough that's almost like pulling on that animal to where they're not thriving.
• 29:40
And I think we see that a lot in the sheep and the goat world, especially
• 29:44
it seems like maybe during kind of the summer months or maybe right
• 29:47
after you got those animals, right after you got them on feed, whatever.
• 29:49
It seems like maybe just some low-grade cocci.
• 29:52
They're eating, they're not scouring, they appear that they're healthy and
• 29:57
everything's good, but, like, you can just tell they're not thriving.
• 30:00
  Yeah.
• 30:01
And like, again, this is just my personal opinion, but like- I feel
• 30:04
like sometimes you can go and you can handle those sheep, and, like, if
• 30:08
they're muscle shape, if they're a sheep that, you know, we went through that
• 30:11
whole checklist, we bought the good one, we bought the one that we want.
• 30:14
If they're muscle shape or they're, like, stifling butt cheeks, you
• 30:18
know, like, you feel like, "Hey, that thing's just not, like-"
• 30:21
Sam Silvers: Almost like they're kind of melting
• 30:22
Logan Newsom: or- Melting, yeah, like it's just one of those- Wasting ... yeah,
• 30:24
like almost like wasting away, and you kind of just look at them and
• 30:27
you're like, "Dude, I screwed up."
• 30:29
Like, "What is wrong with this thing?" 'Cause we get that call a lot like, "Hey,
• 30:32
this thing looked legit when I got him.
• 30:34
I gave a gazillion dollars for him, and he's just not doing it." And, like,
• 30:39
they'll bring him to the house, or maybe I'll swing by, or they'll send
• 30:41
me a picture, and I'm like, "Where are we kind of at on our cocci protocol?"
• 30:44
"Well, oh, he doesn't have the scours. No, he's fine." Yeah.
• 30:47
"All right." It's maybe something that's just, like, pulling just a little bit
• 30:51
to where it's like, again, you know, kind of talk about that, like they're
• 30:54
just not doing what you want them to do.
• 30:56
And I think, I think that, again, that's where the relationship with
• 30:59
  the veter- veterinarian comes in-
• 31:00
  Sam Silvers: Absolutely
• 31:01
because it, it doesn't cost a whole lot to, to bag some of that up and
• 31:05
take it in and get a stool sample.
• 31:07
  I will, I'll, I'll still do that.
• 31:08
If something's not right at my house and I'm kind of going through
• 31:11
that, I'll pack it up, run it up, and, and we'll look, "Okay, what's
• 31:14
our cocci load look like?" Yep.
• 31:16
And y- you know, that, that's a good indicator to tell
• 31:18
  you what's going on there.
• 31:20
Um, so we- we've gone through that.
• 31:23
  We've talked about Rumensin.
• 31:24
We've talked about some Corid in there.
• 31:26
We've talked about- Corids, sulfas ... sulfas, sulfas, um, things of that nature.
• 31:30
Um, there's some other compounded stuff that you can get from vets
• 31:34
that's like Toturazil and vitamin E and stuff like that to mix.
• 31:39
It works really good, but I think the prevention and making sure
• 31:42
that we get cocci out early is really important to a good start.
• 31:46
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 31:47
Yeah, that's, that's something, again, you know, we, we hit on it
• 31:49
now, you know, for a little while.
• 31:50
Like, it's just one of those things that can, that can put you behind-
• 31:55
  Sam Silvers: Way behind
• 31:56
Logan Newsom: from the get-go, and then you are playing catch-up, chasing,
• 31:59
you know, the whole time, and it can be, it, it is, like, it's frustrating.
• 32:02
Like, we've, we've all been there.
• 32:04
  We've all seen it.
• 32:04
Like, it can be so frustrating because you did, you bought one of those things
• 32:07
that you feel good about, and then you get home, and it's like, "What is going on?"
• 32:11
Yeah, and we're, we're dealing with it.
• 32:12
Sam Silvers: I mean, we're dealing with it right now.
• 32:14
We've had this, this rain come through and set in, and that seems like when we
• 32:17
see it, we've had these wet days forever.
• 32:20
Um, y- you know, glad we got the rain, but it, it does make it hard on-
• 32:24
Challenging It makes it very challenging.
• 32:26
We're back after a slight tinkle break.
• 32:29
Logan Newsom: Yeah, yeah, no, um, I, I felt like that was a good time to
• 32:32
take a break because, like, you know, we'd been so serious, coccidiosis
• 32:36
and medications and everything, and obviously you got a little more of, like,
• 32:40
you got a relaxed feel about you now.
• 32:41
  Yeah.
• 32:41
Like, you thought, "I'll just lean back in this chair, and I'll just grab this mic."
• 32:45
You kind of look like, like a different version of Eminem whenever he- ... you
• 32:48
know, is on stage, like- You know, grab the mic and, like, shout out.
• 32:52
I think you're supposed to tilt the mic up, though.
• 32:54
Sam Silvers: Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna do that.
• 32:55
Logan Newsom: You don't, you don't feel like that?
• 32:56
  Okay.
• 32:56
  All right.
• 32:56
And I think that's a good time, like, okay, so we've been, like, super
• 32:58
serious, like, on this, you know, first part of this episode just...
• 33:01
  Y- and it is.
• 33:02
Like, it's obviously... It's important stuff, like, you
• 33:05
  know, health of that animal.
• 33:07
We've- we've- we've wrote, you know, the check.
• 33:09
We've paid, you know, money for this thing, and, like, getting it home, so,
• 33:12
like, the health of it, like, it is.
• 33:13
It's, like, one of the most critical times.
• 33:16
  Let's, let's lighten the mood a little.
• 33:18
  Okay.
• 33:19
Let's talk about how you halter break your sheep with rope halters.
• 33:22
Sam Silvers: So this is n- no rope halters, only chain.
• 33:26
Um, this is where the tears and cussing really comes in.
• 33:30
  Logan Newsom: Fact.
• 33:30
Sam Silvers: Um, but I wanna, I wanna add on there, like, right quick before
• 33:33
we get into that 'cause we went, we went through all the little stuff.
• 33:36
We really didn't talk about environment, and, and I think it's important
• 33:39
for the viewers to know that you don't have to have the Taj Mahal-
• 33:44
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely
• 33:45
... Sam Silvers: to feed good sheep-
• 33:45
  Logan Newsom: Good point
• 33:46
  ... Sam Silvers: and win.
• 33:47
As long as it's clean, right, it's got good air flow, especially for
• 33:53
those summer months, and you can keep 'em warm in the winter- Yep
• 33:57
  you're fine.
• 33:58
  Yep.
• 33:58
You don't have to have the Taj Mahal.
• 33:59
You don't have to get... Hot take, you don't have to get into a measuring
• 34:03
contest with your neighbor on his barn.
• 34:05
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 34:06
I remember, uh, one of those families whenever we first got started, um, it
• 34:10
was a wooden lean-to shed, you know?
• 34:14
And, like, the, the wood part was the feed room.
• 34:17
Um, you know, it was older than all of us combined, had three
• 34:21
pens made out of Gebo's panels.
• 34:23
  Yeah.
• 34:24
And, uh, hey, they were, like, pretty successful.
• 34:27
They're actually one of those families that has, like, eight of
• 34:30
those H trophies in their house now.
• 34:31
Sam Silvers: Ours, ours growing up was a lot like that.
• 34:33
Usually had to, like, fight off a rattlesnake every morning-
• 34:36
Logan Newsom: Yeah, from time to time
• 34:36
' Sam Silvers: cause they were gonna be under the feed room or something.
• 34:38
  Logan Newsom: Yeah.
• 34:39
  Yeah.
• 34:39
  Yeah.
• 34:39
  Good, good, good point.
• 34:40
  Yeah.
• 34:41
Clean, um, I know you guys are, like, you know, dirt in your pens.
• 34:45
  Mm-hmm.
• 34:45
  Um, we're shavings in ours.
• 34:47
Like, either, either one is obviously fine.
• 34:50
Like, you know, each one, you know, probably has its
• 34:52
  advantages and disadvantages.
• 34:54
Sam Silvers: So, but, but let's, let's talk about that for just a second, right?
• 34:57
So your, your barn is probably a little more, I would say a little
• 35:02
more closed in than my barn.
• 35:04
  Yep.
• 35:04
But I, I see the reasoning behind that because of where you live, constant high
• 35:09
winds in the spring, stuff like that.
• 35:12
I, I mean, it, it, it kinda needs to be that way a little bit, whereas
• 35:16
ours is completely open to the south.
• 35:19
We get a nice south breeze all summer.
• 35:22
Um, we don't do shavings because typically they'll just blow plumb out of there.
• 35:25
  Logan Newsom: Be gone.
• 35:26
Sam Silvers: Uh, we sweep or rake the pens down every Sunday.
• 35:29
Um, that works for us in our environment.
• 35:32
Logan Newsom: Yeah, ours is, you know, again, you know, kind of, you
• 35:35
  know, our environment, climate based.
• 35:37
Ours is a little more closed off.
• 35:38
You know, h- uh, ventilation in the Texas Panhandle is usually not a big deal.
• 35:42
We've usually got, you know, the 40 mile an hour ventilation-
• 35:45
  Yeah ... um, fan going.
• 35:46
And, uh, at the same time, like when we get into, you know- Cooler fall,
• 35:51
obviously winter, like we have to be a little more closed off 'cause we can't...
• 35:55
You know, that's what we talked kind of about that, you know, as far as, uh, you
• 35:58
know, our swings in temp. Texas Panhandle, it's probably gonna freeze every night.
• 36:04
  Yeah.
• 36:04
So, you know, or at least get pretty, pretty close to kinda, you
• 36:07
know, like that 32-degree deal, and so we close everything down.
• 36:10
  You know, we have heaters.
• 36:11
So different areas, different setup, both of them obviously very functional.
• 36:16
  Yep.
• 36:17
  Okay.
• 36:17
  Um- That's, that's good.
• 36:18
Sam Silvers: Okay, so halter breaking.
• 36:19
  Logan Newsom: Yeah.
• 36:21
  Sam Silvers: What do we-
• 36:22
  Logan Newsom: The fun
• 36:23
... Sam Silvers: the fun, right?
• 36:24
Um, and it's, it's really not that hard.
• 36:28
Halter breaking to me is really not that hard.
• 36:30
It seems like, um, at our setup at our house, you know, our, our, our show barn
• 36:35
and where we treadmill and, and do boots, uh, it- it's probably, I don't know,
• 36:42
what, 50 yards away to the other barn.
• 36:45
So they get halter broke and, and broke to lead pretty easily because we're
• 36:49
gonna be taking them over there quite a bit, at least a couple times a week, y-
• 36:53
you know, doing, trying to do boots and leg wool on them and stuff like that,
• 36:56
or weighing them and tracking weights.
• 36:58
  That's where our scales are.
• 36:59
Logan Newsom: Wait, so do you think that you spend more time halt- like,
• 37:03
this is obviously past halter breaking.
• 37:05
Do you think that you spend more time walking your sheep, getting
• 37:07
out, getting them out of the pen, laying eyes on them, kids actually
• 37:12
putting hands on them because you have a good leg wool exercise regimen?
• 37:16
  Sam Silvers: 100%.
• 37:18
  Logan Newsom: Interesting.
• 37:19
  Hmm.
• 37:19
  Sam Silvers: 100%.
• 37:20
We... Yeah, that... We'll get into that, too.
• 37:23
Um, but typically what we'll do is we'll, we'll halter them things up, and we'll tie
• 37:28
them to the fence in their pens, um, with their heads up, um, not try to choke them.
• 37:34
Kids usually will set in there on a bucket or something, get them used to them.
• 37:37
That's the initial halter breaking process, just getting them used to
• 37:40
having that on their head, um, where they're not just sucking back on the
• 37:44
  fence, jumping around, falling down.
• 37:46
Uh, if they do, uh, one of, one of the kids or myself or Jeree's there
• 37:51
  to, to prevent anything happening.
• 37:53
But I would say the first, like, I don't know, maybe four or five days,
• 37:58
let's just say a week, the first seven days is just them tied to the fence.
• 38:02
Logan Newsom: Tied to the fence, yep.
• 38:04
  Yeah, same deal.
• 38:05
  That's what we do.
• 38:06
Um, we have the benefit, you know, at our house that not everyone has, we
• 38:10
have Cub- Yeah ... so we can tie him to the fence, and then Cub probably
• 38:14
has, you know, like a sorting flag in his hand, and he's, like, running
• 38:17
  through Dennis the Menace style.
• 38:19
So that, uh, that kinda gets a lot of the, you know, let's say piss
• 38:23
and vinegar out of those things- Sure ... rather quickly, so.
• 38:26
But yeah, tie them to the fence, stand there, let them get used to it.
• 38:29
And I think we talked about it, you know, on the last episode, again,
• 38:32
that rope halter versus chain halter, like this is a g- you know, where we
• 38:36
talked about the benefits of that.
• 38:37
Like, they can fight that chain, but it's like gives them just enough of
• 38:42
some tension there that they're like Hey
• 38:44
  Sam Silvers: That hurts
• 38:45
  ... Logan Newsom: that hurts.
• 38:45
I can't get away from that.
• 38:46
Where that rope deal, not only can they pull on it, but kinda like what
• 38:49
you hit on, like, they can actually cinch it down so tight that we
• 38:53
could run into some other issues.
• 38:54
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 38:55
So then, then we talk about w- we've kinda got 'em broke to that halter, now we
• 39:00
wanna start teaching 'em to lead, right?
• 39:03
And this sounds really basic, but w- what do you do there at Newsom Livestock?
• 39:08
  Yeah,
• 39:08
Logan Newsom: um, it is, and ours is, ours is b- ours is probably pretty basic.
• 39:12
Uh, kids get 'em out, and we head down the road, you know?
• 39:16
And again, you know, kinda jokingly, but we might have Cub
• 39:20
with a sorting flag behind 'em.
• 39:22
Um, and it is, like, it- let's be honest, it's a pain in the ass to start with.
• 39:27
It's not hard, it's just a pain, you know?
• 39:29
  Mm-hmm.
• 39:30
Like, and I think one of the things that I probably yell at the kids
• 39:33
about as much as anything is they just take off, like dragging them and
• 39:38
pulling them, and then they're just so confused on why they won't follow 'em.
• 39:43
  Yeah.
• 39:43
And I'm like, "Dude, walk beside 'em. Let it kinda be their idea. Let's-"
• 39:48
Sam Silvers: Or let 'em go ahead of you if you want to
• 39:50
... Logan Newsom: let 'em go ahead of you.
• 39:50
Sam Silvers: Like, let's, let's outsmart the sheep or the goat.
• 39:53
Logan Newsom: Like, let's not just drag them.
• 39:55
  Yeah.
• 39:55
So we probably have to kinda have some daily reminders of
• 39:58
  that with my two children.
• 39:59
I'm sure everybody else that's listening is probably better from that standpoint.
• 40:03
But yeah, let those things kinda, let it kinda be their idea.
• 40:05
Like, let 'em kinda take off, and it's amazing how all of a sudden, you know,
• 40:09
  things start working and coinciding.
• 40:12
And it's so much easier, and, and I, and I'm not gonna sit here and
• 40:16
say that I haven't been this person, but, like, it's so much easier
• 40:19
to do this- When they're young
• 40:21
when they're young, when they're little, than, uh, when they're bigger.
• 40:25
Or, like, "Hey, let's go jackpot that thing." Like, as a stock show
• 40:29
dad, we've been there, we've done it, and like, you're having to drag that
• 40:32
thing to the scales at like 7:45 in the morning, and you are pissed off.
• 40:36
  Sam Silvers: Uh-huh, 100%.
• 40:37
So w- we're getting 'em, we're getting 'em hand broke, and, and I think that's
• 40:41
the time, too, that like, um, before we let everyone, uh, let any of those sheep
• 40:45
go as they're tied to the fence, we'll get the kids to kinda just walk 'em.
• 40:49
This is early in the process, right?
• 40:51
The kids will walk 'em around in the pen.
• 40:53
  In the pen, yep.
• 40:53
In the pen, and then they'll set all them sheep up before we let 'em go.
• 40:57
  I'll, I'll have 'em-
• 40:58
  Logan Newsom: Yeah
• 40:58
... Sam Silvers: set 'em up, brace 'em to the best of their ability, 'cause
• 41:01
  they're, they're not trained yet.
• 41:02
  They don't know everything.
• 41:04
But they will set 'em up and brace 'em before they let 'em go.
• 41:07
Logan Newsom: Yeah, and again, like we said, it's so much easier to get
• 41:09
all that done when they're little.
• 41:10
  You know?
• 41:11
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 41:11
Logan Newsom: Those things are 60, 70 pounds.
• 41:12
And it's easier, like, it's easier on the kids, you know?
• 41:15
  Like, because it's not a, "Hey, that thing's 120 pounds, let's,
• 41:18
let's teach him to show or, or, you know, teach him to walk."
• 41:22
Like, you can c- they can kinda manhandle 'em.
• 41:23
No matter how big they are, they can kinda manhandle 'em and kinda get 'em going.
• 41:26
And I think it also kinda works to where those two start kind of forming,
• 41:30
  like, a relationship, you know?
• 41:32
  Like-
• 41:33
  Sam Silvers: A bond
• 41:33
  ... Logan Newsom: a bond.
• 41:34
Sam Silvers: Kinda like the bond you and I have.
• 41:36
Logan Newsom: Yeah, like where you, you sometimes wanna punch me in the nose?
• 41:39
  Sam Silvers: Forged in fire.
• 41:40
  Logan Newsom: Whoo.
• 41:41
  I like that.
• 41:41
We should put that on a T-shirt.
• 41:44
Okay, so we've got those things.
• 41:45
  We got them haltered.
• 41:46
Again, I think that's a good point, too.
• 41:47
You don't have to immediately walk outside of the pen.
• 41:50
If you got room in the pen, especially like, you know, ours are not as big as
• 41:54
yours are, but, like, they're 8 by 20s.
• 41:57
Um, yeah, walk those things just like in a circle, you know?
• 42:00
Like, just kind of walk them over to lead them or, or, you know, walk them over to
• 42:04
set them up, whatever that looks like.
• 42:05
  A few circles.
• 42:05
  Few circles, yeah.
• 42:06
  Yeah.
• 42:06
Kind of just makes it to where you can avoid the, "Oh my gosh, Dad,
• 42:09
I let that thing go," and he's running down the keletchi road.
• 42:11
Sam Silvers: And this is where w- w- we're kind of getting into our,
• 42:13
our, our next little segment here.
• 42:15
Um, this is where we start building that routine, if you will.
• 42:19
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 42:19
  Sam Silvers: Right?
• 42:20
A- and that kind of sets the, to... in my eyes, sets the precedence for,
• 42:24
for the rest of the year, right?
• 42:26
Um, because I think routine is key to successfulness.
• 42:30
  Logan Newsom: Yeah.
• 42:31
  I can get behind that.
• 42:33
Sam Silvers: So we're, we're doing that, right?
• 42:35
And this is when we're gonna start integrating, like, our, our leg regiment.
• 42:39
Um, maybe we start getting them on the... Y- you know, you may be different
• 42:44
than me, but we'll start getting them on the track at a pretty early age.
• 42:47
  If it's just once a week, it's a light breezing, yeah, everything's
• 42:51
skinny at this point, but we still get them broke to the track.
• 42:54
We get a little bit of exercise.
• 42:55
I think that's important, 'cause I, I look at these things as, as athletes.
• 42:59
  Logan Newsom: Yep.
• 43:00
Sam Silvers: A- and, you know, a professional athlete works
• 43:02
out every day, no matter what.
• 43:03
  Logan Newsom: Yep.
• 43:03
Sam Silvers: Um, a- and I, I think it's kind of like a bell
• 43:06
curve to me a little bit, right?
• 43:08
They might kind of start going down a little bit in terms of, like,
• 43:11
condition and fleshiness, but then they're gonna start catching up, right?
• 43:15
  Yep.
• 43:15
Their body's gonna catch up with what they're doing.
• 43:16
  They're gonna start metabolizing everything.
• 43:19
That's when we start getting it.
• 43:20
  Um, but again, routine, right?
• 43:23
We get them on the track maybe once a week, trying them out.
• 43:26
We're gonna get them on the treadmill once a week just to get them used to it,
• 43:29
'cause fighting them, fighting a 170-pound lamb on a treadmill is a nightmare.
• 43:34
  Logan Newsom: For the birds.
• 43:36
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 43:36
Logan Newsom: You know, and I think that's just... It's exactly the same
• 43:38
way as the halter breaking deal, right?
• 43:39
It's, like, so much easier to teach them early, so much
• 43:41
  easier when they're younger.
• 43:42
You know, on the track, we obviously utilize, you know,
• 43:45
a, you know, a track dog.
• 43:46
Um, it's kind of that same deal.
• 43:48
Like, it's easier to get those things broke to that and scared of that dog
• 43:52
and get all of that out of the way.
• 43:54
If you do need to do a little stitching or sewing or-
• 43:57
  Sam Silvers: Mm-hmm
• 43:57
... Logan Newsom: you know, cosmetic work there, like, it's better to get all that
• 44:00
done and out of the way, as opposed to, "Oh, hey, that sheep weighs 140 and he's
• 44:06
fleshy and I need to be tracking him."
• 44:09
  Doesn't work.
• 44:09
  Sam Silvers: No.
• 44:09
  Logan Newsom: Bad idea.
• 44:10
Like, it just absolutely doesn't work.
• 44:11
  Like, I don't care.
• 44:12
I'll leg wrestle anyone that argues with me on that.
• 44:15
Sam Silvers: So your, your leg regiment, I would assume, is a lot like ours.
• 44:18
I've been to your place, and I, I've seen your wash rack area and stuff.
• 44:22
  W- we have, like... I don't know.
• 44:24
Uh, so our pens are set up different, but typically we'll feed
• 44:29
four to five head per pen, right?
• 44:31
A- and that's what we call a group.
• 44:33
So i- in our wash bay area, we have five tables set up, um, a-
• 44:39
and we'll do a pen at a time.
• 44:40
So we take a pen over there.
• 44:42
We'll put You know, four to five on the stands in there.
• 44:45
Um, that's where we kinda start teaching them to jump and all that stuff, slowly
• 44:50
and surely building that routine where we're not having to pick 'em up when
• 44:53
they weigh 140 to get on the stand.
• 44:55
By, you know, by November, we can lead in there and, you know, kinda
• 44:59
like a horse- Yeah ... kinda click 'em and then they'll jump right up.
• 45:02
Um, we'll do our leg wool regiment, which I, I don't... I would assume
• 45:06
that's probably gonna be a whole nother episode on just leg wool stuff.
• 45:09
  Probably.
• 45:09
  But- That's something, yeah,
• 45:10
  Logan Newsom: we'll have- Um
• 45:10
  to dive into that.
• 45:11
Sam Silvers: Um- Typically what we do is, is like we'll, we'll start
• 45:15
their leg wool, you know, we'll, we'll rinse, condition, blow, all that stuff,
• 45:19
and then, uh, we'll jump 'em off.
• 45:22
We'll run 'em across the treadmill, um, maybe run 'em across the
• 45:26
  scale, our scale's there.
• 45:27
We have a big whiteboard in there.
• 45:29
  We track weights.
• 45:30
Uh, right now we just kinda track weights once a month, but we'll
• 45:33
get to where we track 'em weekly.
• 45:35
Um, and then we jump 'em back up, and that's when we finish
• 45:38
  blowing, wrapping, all that stuff.
• 45:41
Logan Newsom: I've noticed, um, obviously being in your barn, you
• 45:43
know, multiple times, and, like, it is... Like, you've got the big
• 45:45
whiteboard there, and I think this is a interesting take, like, you know,
• 45:48
whether people weigh often or don't weigh.
• 45:52
And, and you obviously are, you know, pretty religious about y'all's,
• 45:56
  y'all's scale management there.
• 45:57
Do you weigh yourself as often as you weigh your sheep?
• 46:01
  Sam Silvers: No.
• 46:02
  Oh.
• 46:02
  I should, though.
• 46:03
Logan Newsom: I was just... I was curious.
• 46:04
  Sam's got a board that's, I don't know, like, 10 by 20 I feel like.
• 46:09
I think that- It is huge, and he-
• 46:11
Sam Silvers: 4 by 8 maybe
• 46:12
Logan Newsom: weighs, weighs I would say very, very
• 46:15
  religiously throughout the year.
• 46:17
We're on the other side of that.
• 46:18
  I don't weigh very often.
• 46:20
  Um-
• 46:21
Sam Silvers: Yeah, I noticed that the other day
• 46:22
  ... Logan Newsom: personally either.
• 46:23
Um, but, like, we weigh when we go to a show, and I guess I just... I,
• 46:28
I probably wish that... Excuse me.
• 46:32
I probably wish that we did weigh a little bit more 'cause I'm...
• 46:35
I would be interested to see, like you said, and I think that brings up a good
• 46:38
point, just tracking them, especially, like, this time of year, like, making
• 46:41
sure those things are gaining, making sure they're growing, making sure
• 46:43
they're doing what we want 'em to do.
• 46:44
So I think it's a very, very good tool.
• 46:47
We personally don't do it as often, but at the same time, you know, we,
• 46:52
when we start jackpotting, I guess that's when I'm usually like...
• 46:54
'Cause I do keep everything on my phone, and I'm like, "Okay, he weighed this,"
• 46:57
and then, you know, three weeks later we took him out and he weighed that.
• 47:01
  Yeah.
• 47:01
  I don't know.
• 47:01
Inter- dif- different, different strokes for different folks I believe is the term.
• 47:05
Sam Silvers: I guess I, I like looking at it too because I've noticed a trend over
• 47:09
the past, like, three or four years is, like, we have these steady gains kinda
• 47:13
through the summer, and then it seems like every time about, like, October,
• 47:19
November, when, when the weather finally starts cooling down where we live,
• 47:25
that's when you start getting huge jumps.
• 47:27
Logan Newsom: Yeah, big jumps in 'em.
• 47:28
Sam Silvers: A- and now I know that, hey, October- ... November we're fixing
• 47:32
to start seeing some serious gains here, and we might need to start dialing some
• 47:36
of these back or doing something, right?
• 47:37
'Cause they're gonna start- Y- you know, I have some that'll jump
• 47:40
  8, 10, 12 pounds in a month- I th- ... and you're like, "Oh my God"
• 47:44
Logan Newsom: I think that's the part that, you know, if you're listening and
• 47:46
you're, you know, curious about, you know, making your program better, I think
• 47:49
that's the part that everyone has to keep in mind, is it's, it's different in
• 47:54
different parts of the country, right?
• 47:56
Because for us, when it starts getting cold in the Texas
• 47:59
  Panhandle, like, our stuff's done.
• 48:01
Now, we're fortunate up here because we might be 100 degrees middle of the summer
• 48:07
during the day, it's gonna be 71 at night.
• 48:10
  Like, it's amazing.
• 48:11
  Yeah.
• 48:11
You wanna sit out on the patio, you wanna sit out on the patio, you know,
• 48:16
in the evenings or early part of the mo- you know, in the mornings.
• 48:19
I mean, until 10:00, 11:00, we might not turn fans and porti-cools on.
• 48:23
So we catch a lot of our grow and our gain, and I mean, you've been to the
• 48:26
house and you've seen it, you know, like, you know, sometimes like, oh my
• 48:29
gosh, your state fair sheep are like-
• 48:31
  Sam Silvers: Huge
• 48:31
... Logan Newsom: blowing through the... But like, at some point there,
• 48:34
when it starts getting cold and things cool down, like, we're done.
• 48:38
I remember a couple years ago, we had a sheep that I was worried about.
• 48:43
You know, like, I thought he was a little big, a little big, and I knew
• 48:45
he was probably gonna be, like, one of our Houston options, and I think
• 48:47
between Thanksgiving and Houston, he gained, like, five pounds.
• 48:50
You know, he just kinda got there and he was done, but we started
• 48:52
getting cold, things kinda shut down.
• 48:54
So it can vary depending on where you live.
• 48:57
Again, we kinda talked back about that, you know, the environment
• 48:59
and, you know, different situations, different settings, whatever.
• 49:02
So just because maybe you're ahead or you're behind where maybe somebody
• 49:07
else is at that time, like, think about where your environment is.
• 49:10
Like, okay, I know I'm gonna catch up whenever we get to the s-
• 49:15
fall, you know, that's whenever- Yeah ... our stuff really kinda takes
• 49:17
off, or this or that or whatever.
• 49:19
So keep that in mind if you're a listener, you know, and you're kinda thinking about
• 49:22
that, like, "Oh man, that, that seems like that might not work in my area."
• 49:25
  Might not.
• 49:26
Your- Yeah ... your situation might be different.
• 49:27
Okay, so you kinda hit on that just a little bit and, and we kinda, you know,
• 49:30
went off on the weight kick or whatever.
• 49:32
Um, talk about that, kinda that initial treadmilling.
• 49:35
You said run 'em across the treadmill, kinda what that looks like, you
• 49:37
know, for those guys that might be, um, you know, just learning or, you
• 49:42
know, kinda what your, you guys' routine in Junction there looks like.
• 49:45
Obviously, you don't jump 'em on and go 100- Four times ... for
• 49:49
five minutes right out of the gate.
• 49:50
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 49:51
So, um, typically we'll just kinda jump 'em on there, um, get 'em in position,
• 49:58
and then we may just start 'em out on one of the lowest speeds there are,
• 50:02
uh, one to two minutes, and that's it.
• 50:05
We're, we're not really trying to f- to fix anything or do anything,
• 50:08
we're just getting them used to it.
• 50:10
And then we slowly, I would say over a month, we slowly
• 50:14
  start building that up, right?
• 50:16
Build the speed up, that kinda thing.
• 50:18
Um, and, and you're gonna find out, too, and I think you've found this too,
• 50:21
there's, there's some of those sheep and goats that are really coordinated.
• 50:25
  Logan Newsom: Sure.
• 50:26
Sam Silvers: Uh, I mean, they, they're gifted with an athletic ability, I think
• 50:30
And, and there's some that just aren't.
• 50:31
  They're just-
• 50:32
Logan Newsom: Kind of like humans
• 50:33
  ... Sam Silvers: dumb.
• 50:34
  Logan Newsom: Yeah.
• 50:34
Oh, also kind of like humans.
• 50:35
  Sam Silvers: Yes, very.
• 50:36
  Logan Newsom: That's interesting.
• 50:37
Sam Silvers: Um, so start slow.
• 50:38
Logan Newsom: The Lord says that we're like sheep.
• 50:41
  Sam Silvers: Yes.
• 50:42
  Start slow, build up.
• 50:44
Um, that's... A- and again, establishing that daily routine.
• 50:48
I- so I'm gonna ask you this question.
• 50:50
How important do you think it is to have that daily routine, feeding at
• 50:55
the same times, things of that nature?
• 50:58
Logan Newsom: I think you know the answer to that because you've been around me,
• 51:01
and, you know, I'm pretty punctual, and when I mean that, like, if I need
• 51:08
to do it at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, it's probably gonna get done by Thursday.
• 51:13
  Yeah.
• 51:13
Not so much in the feed barn.
• 51:15
I'm probably like... That's probably where I am maybe just a
• 51:17
little more, uh, punctual than I am, you know, in other aspects of
• 51:20
my daily life, like all of them.
• 51:22
Um, but yeah, like we, we try to have a routine, you know, like we're not,
• 51:26
um, the guys that feed, like, with the chickens because I don't like, I don't
• 51:32
like waking up as early, but we try to have a routine, you know, feeding
• 51:37
Sam Silvers: Yeah, but what, what I'm getting at is it, if
• 51:39
  it's 9:00 AM, it's probably gonna be 9:00, 9:00 PM- Yeah, yeah
• 51:42
  10:00 PM, something like that.
• 51:42
  Logan Newsom: Yeah, definitely.
• 51:43
So like, and I think you kind of naturally fall into that routine.
• 51:46
Like, we try to have everything fed in the show barn by 8:30 because whenever
• 51:52
kids get out of school, we get done with our routine in the evenings,
• 51:55
whatever that looks like, ball practice, all the different things, like it's
• 51:58
probably really and truly gonna be like 7:30 to 8:30 before we feed again.
• 52:02
Like, it's just kinda what works.
• 52:04
Like, we're not gonna feed at 6:30 or 7:00, like everybody's still scattered,
• 52:08
everybody's still doing stuff, and I think that routine kinda naturally
• 52:12
just falls in line with what your family schedule looks like, and so
• 52:16
that's just kinda where ours hits.
• 52:18
I know some families it'll, you know-
• 52:19
Sam Silvers: It's different for everybody.
• 52:20
  Logan Newsom: Yeah, yeah.
• 52:21
They, they feed... Maybe the kids feed, you know, before they go to school.
• 52:24
Um, mine are lucky enough that I like them enough that I guess I feed
• 52:28
for 'em in the mornings, and then, um, you know, then they do... Like
• 52:31
Graham's deal is the feed board.
• 52:32
Like, he does all the, all the mixing and Joe pours it out.
• 52:36
Like, that's kind of our little routine at the house.
• 52:38
Like, you know- So- ... it took me a little while to make sure I could help
• 52:42
him with fractions because that was definitely something we probably like,
• 52:46
you know, scoops and fractions and, you know, what a half is and what a third is.
• 52:51
Um, but yeah, that's kinda their deal and that's kinda what it looks like
• 52:53
by the, by the time you get d- they get done, and I think the same thing
• 52:56
kinda falls in line with that routine deal, whether it's exercise, whether
• 53:01
  it's, you know, treadmilling- Mm-hmm
• 53:03
  whether it's leg day.
• 53:03
Like, you have to kind of find what fits.
• 53:05
And it... And we're all busy, right?
• 53:08
  Every kid's involved in stuff.
• 53:09
  Parents are busy.
• 53:10
It's the life we live, like fast-paced.
• 53:13
We, we, we can talk about it till we're blue in the face, but, like,
• 53:16
you gotta just kinda find what works.
• 53:17
I always tell people, like, if, you know, you can...
• 53:20
If you need to track those things three days a week, I'm not telling you it has to
• 53:23
be Monday, Wednesday, Friday That sounds great, and you can write that on paper,
• 53:28
and you can pretend that that works.
• 53:31
Sam Silvers: It's probably not gonna happen.
• 53:32
Logan Newsom: Yeah, things come up.
• 53:33
There- yeah, there's, there's some of those that we might, we might go Tuesday,
• 53:36
and then we might go Saturday, Sunday.
• 53:38
Like, that's just what fits our deal.
• 53:40
Sam Silvers: And I think th- I think the routine, it, it, and, and you
• 53:44
pick the times that you want to, but I, I think it's really important
• 53:47
'cause I see this at, at my house.
• 53:49
It- when they're younger because let's say that we have a day that, like, we-
• 53:54
let's just say we've been feeding at, like, 8:00 and 8:00, 8:00 in the morning,
• 53:57
8:00 in the evening for a few weeks, and something happens, comes up, and then
• 54:02
we had to feed, we had to feed at, you know, 8:00 in the morning and at 10:00
• 54:05
at night, that's when we see some stuff.
• 54:08
Like, they're gonna- they might crap out on us, or they'll go out on- they'll,
• 54:12
they won't eat the next morning.
• 54:14
So it, it's important, I, I think, that when, when you set that routine
• 54:18
and you get it, try to stick to it.
• 54:19
And, and I do realize that things come up, things happen, you know, there,
• 54:23
  there's ball, there's this, there's that.
• 54:25
Um, but the one thing that I've always said is this isn't just a kid project.
• 54:31
  It's a family project.
• 54:32
  Absolutely.
• 54:32
And it takes an army, right?
• 54:34
  Yep.
• 54:35
Like, like if, if, you know, if, if Graham's gotta go to ball practice
• 54:38
and, and JB's taking him to ball practice and y- you know, Gracie Jo's
• 54:43
doing something else, then, you know, you're probably gonna have to pick up
• 54:46
the slack and make sure they get fed sometime between 8:00 and 9:00, right?
• 54:49
Or it- so you just gotta... That's how we manage it, right?
• 54:53
  Yeah.
• 54:53
That's how we eat the elephant, if you will.
• 54:55
Logan Newsom: Well, and that's, and that's how it has to be.
• 54:56
And like, if you're not in this, and like, as a parent, I mean, I can
• 55:00
sit here, and I will, I will tell you, if you're not willing to help
• 55:03
the kids, and- It's not gonna work
• 55:05
Sam Silvers: it's not gonna work.
• 55:05
  Logan Newsom: Like, it's not.
• 55:06
Like, th- this is, this is their project, you know, to help them and
• 55:11
grow and do and all the things, but like, you have gotta be involved in
• 55:14
it from the beginning to the end.
• 55:15
And you know, we've got a, we've got a few families we, I think are, are
• 55:18
learning that, but like at first it was just like, "Oh yeah," you know.
• 55:22
And, and, and their families, I wouldn't say, are maybe as, um, invested.
• 55:28
Like, it's kinda just like, "Oh, we wanna do this." And not, not
• 55:32
  taking anything away from 'em.
• 55:33
I think they just haven't realized, like, hey, this is a deal that,
• 55:36
like, we've all gotta be involved in.
• 55:38
And there's good and bad with that, right?
• 55:39
Like, you can win together and lose together and fight together and all that,
• 55:43
but like, it's a, it also, you hear it all the time, like whenever families graduate,
• 55:48
like, and you know, some of the dads all of a sudden wanna get like sentimental,
• 55:50
and like, "Man, I'm gonna miss, you know, all the screaming and yelling, and
• 55:55
now all of a sudden the barn's quiet"
• 55:56
  Sam Silvers: Yeah
• 55:56
Logan Newsom: and all this stuff.
• 55:57
But yeah, I mean, you just gotta kinda fit, you know, kinda
• 55:59
  back on that routine, though.
• 56:00
You kinda kinda find, find what works.
• 56:02
And I think I thought about something while you were saying that, and I
• 56:05
think it ties in with that routine.
• 56:08
And you know, I, I kinda poke a little fun at Graham and his, you know, fractions
• 56:11
and ability to, you know, look at a can and realize what, you know, a third is.
• 56:15
I also see- Some differences in like those animals aggress- aggressiveness to
• 56:21
eat or maybe just, you know, you talked about like maybe some of them getting
• 56:24
a little loose in terms of, you know, their stool or, or anything like that.
• 56:28
If Graham hasn't been feeding for like three or four days, like if he's been gone
• 56:31
or something, and then I've been feeding, and then all of a sudden, like we both
• 56:35
have been looking at the same board, but then all of a sudden, like he comes back.
• 56:39
I'm not saying that he was right and I was wrong or vice versa, but there
• 56:43
was a little bit of difference there.
• 56:45
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 56:45
Logan Newsom: Maybe his can is a little heavy.
• 56:47
  Maybe his-
• 56:47
Sam Silvers: Jurahee's quarter is a little different than- Yep ... Sam's quarter.
• 56:49
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 56:50
And so like you wanna find some consistency and some routine there.
• 56:53
Like if there's five of you guys, like I would not recommend, you know, "Hey, it's
• 56:58
your turn to feed, and then I'll feed tonight, and then the next kid feeds, you
• 57:01
know, the next morning." Like somebody kinda needs to be the one that's probably
• 57:03
doing majority of the scooping there.
• 57:05
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 57:06
  Yeah.
• 57:06
So we, we've... I, I think it's about time to probably
• 57:09
  start wrapping this episode up.
• 57:11
  Yep.
• 57:11
We, we've, we've talked about unloading them at the house.
• 57:14
We've talked about our, our vaccination protocol, keeping them things
• 57:18
healthy, uh, keeping them on feed, building a routine, halter breaking.
• 57:23
Um, we're starting our leg regiment.
• 57:25
We're kinda starting our, our exercise regiment, if you will.
• 57:28
Um, so y- you know, that to me, that's kind of a good place to s- I would
• 57:33
say start wrapping up this episode.
• 57:35
Logan Newsom: Yeah, no, that's, uh... I mean, we're, we're
• 57:37
in a good spot, you know.
• 57:38
If you think about our, you know, our kind of our, our visual project here that
• 57:41
we've kinda built up in our, in our heads and, you know, that have... as listeners
• 57:45
are driving down the road, you know, they're maybe kind of visualizing also.
• 57:48
I think when we kinda wrap that up, you know, and we kinda
• 57:51
talk about it, like, and we...
• 57:53
as we're entering into, you know, maybe those summer months and,
• 57:56
you know, obviously we're gonna continue and, um, talk about, you
• 58:00
know, summer prep and k- kind of how that, kinda how that goes through.
• 58:04
Real quick, and just, you know, the first thing that comes to mind, what
• 58:09
do you think the biggest mistake a family can make the first...
• 58:12
We've, we've kinda hit on this, you know, the first seven days.
• 58:15
What's the biggest mistake that you see or that you have to maybe try to
• 58:18
caution families to make that could potentially go wrong first seven days?
• 58:23
  Boom, what is it?
• 58:25
Sam Silvers: Oh, man, that's a tough one, 'cause I think there's a lot of things.
• 58:28
  Um-
• 58:28
Logan Newsom: Leaving the gate open?
• 58:30
That could be a big deal.
• 58:31
I had this family the other day that like came and they bought a couple of sheep,
• 58:35
and one of them was like, "He was really, really good. He was a little expensive."
• 58:39
And they left the gate open, and they had to go hunt them through the woods.
• 58:43
For a later episode, I'll tell you guys who it was, 'cause everybody knows him.
• 58:47
  Sam Silvers: Hmm.
• 58:47
I had one one time, uh, jump out, and they had a mountain behind their house.
• 58:52
  And, uh, they were gone.
• 58:54
  Never caught them again.
• 58:55
  Logan Newsom: Never?
• 58:55
  Sam Silvers: Never.
• 58:56
  Gone.
• 58:56
  Logan Newsom: Gone.
• 58:57
  Dude, that-
• 58:57
Sam Silvers: Till this day, they are still roaming the mountain somewhere.
• 58:59
Logan Newsom: He's still out there?
• 59:00
Sam Silvers: He's not still out there.
• 59:01
  Unless a hunter got him.
• 59:01
  I guarantee he's...
• 59:02
  Yeah, he's gone.
• 59:02
  Um, I, y- I don't know.
• 59:04
  Biggest mistake?
• 59:06
  I don't... Dumbassery.
• 59:07
  Logan Newsom: Yeah.
• 59:08
Sam Silvers: Can I say that?
• 59:09
  Logan Newsom: Yeah, you can.
• 59:10
  Sam Silvers: It's a, it's a real thing.
• 59:11
Just, I mean, pull your head out.
• 59:13
  Pay attention.
• 59:14
  Watch.
• 59:15
When you get done feeding in the evenings or you go out in the morning,
• 59:19
take two minutes and walk the pens, make sure everything's eaten, make
• 59:23
sure nothing doesn't have its head down or his ears down in the corner.
• 59:26
Uh, y- you know, make sure water buckets are filled up, make sure they're clean.
• 59:29
It's just simple, basic animal, what I would call animal husbandry skills.
• 59:34
  Logan Newsom: Absolutely.
• 59:35
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 59:36
A- and it's gonna... Yeah, just don't, don't do dumb stuff.
• 59:39
  Dumbassery.
• 59:40
  Okay.
• 59:40
  No, it's a real thing.
• 59:41
  Dumbassery, yeah.
• 59:41
  Like, it's a, it's a, it's, it's for sure.
• 59:43
Logan Newsom: The one thing that I tell people and, and, you know, we're,
• 59:46
what we feed, and I just think this is, like, the first thing that comes to mind
• 59:49
when I think about that is, you know, those things have been on the pink bags
• 59:51
the whole time, like, whenever they're little, and then all of a sudden people
• 59:55
go and boom, they just change everything.
• 59:58
Sam Silvers: Was that a plug there?
• 59:59
Logan Newsom: Nope- Oh ... because they haven't sponsored anything.
• 1:00:01
So I'll, I'll let you guys know who actually owns the pink bags at some point,
• 1:00:04
but for now it's just the pink bags.
• 1:00:06
But yeah, like, just, like, change feed, you know, new environment, like,
• 1:00:09
all this stuff, just, like... And expect those things just to take off.
• 1:00:12
Like, I, I think that probably actually falls, if we looked up dumbassery, I think
• 1:00:16
that kinda also falls in line with that.
• 1:00:17
  Like-
• 1:00:18
  Sam Silvers: Yeah
• 1:00:18
... Logan Newsom: think, just think through some things just a little bit.
• 1:00:20
  Like- Just a little bit.
• 1:00:22
  Yeah.
• 1:00:22
  Make it easy.
• 1:00:22
  This game's hard.
• 1:00:23
Like, and you always tell the kids, like-
• 1:00:25
Sam Silvers: But if you do-
• 1:00:26
Logan Newsom: Some shit's hard and you make it harder.
• 1:00:27
  Sam Silvers: E- exactly.
• 1:00:29
If you do have a question, you can go to drenchline.com- Submit
• 1:00:32
it ... and plug that in there and submit it and we will answer it.
• 1:00:34
  We love to answer.
• 1:00:34
You might not like the answer, but we'll answer it.
• 1:00:36
Logan Newsom: We will certainly answer it.
• 1:00:37
Okay, so that kinda wraps, uh, episode four.
• 1:00:40
We've got our, we've got our, we've got our sheep, we're on
• 1:00:43
  feed, we're rocking and rolling.
• 1:00:44
  We've got a routine going.
• 1:00:45
Um, we've walked 'em across the treadmill.
• 1:00:47
Sam's weighed him 17 times now so far.
• 1:00:50
And, uh, yeah, we're, we're, we're ready to kinda get into our summer prep and
• 1:00:54
start thinking about what those things are gonna grow out like, maybe, you
• 1:00:56
know, kinda hitting a few jackpots, all the different things that can go in.
• 1:00:59
So, um, Sam said it, drop us a line.
• 1:01:02
Uh, any questions that you guys might have, submit 'em.
• 1:01:06
We'll try to, we'll try to catch 'em.
• 1:01:08
I think this time we have one that we were gonna talk about that Abigail submitted.
• 1:01:13
  Sam Silvers: Yep.
• 1:01:13
Logan Newsom: And she was curious, as we kinda roll into this, and I
• 1:01:16
think it kinda ties into what we're gonna talk about, you know, as we move
• 1:01:19
  through episodes, summer jackpots-
• 1:01:21
  Sam Silvers: Yeah
• 1:01:22
  Logan Newsom: and drenching.
• 1:01:23
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 1:01:23
  Logan Newsom: Obviously, a, a
• 1:01:24
big deal on the Drench Line podcast.
• 1:01:27
  Whenever
• 1:01:27
Logan Newsom: you go to a summer jackpot, what does that look like
• 1:01:29
as far as your drenching protocol?
• 1:01:31
I know in the last episode we talked a little, if you hear that
• 1:01:34
I'm going to the jackpot, you know, you, you go into super prep mode.
• 1:01:38
  Sam Silvers: Mm-hmm.
• 1:01:38
Logan Newsom: I mean, you are full bore, like fitting legs.
• 1:01:42
Sam Silvers: By God, I am.
• 1:01:42
Logan Newsom: I mean, Tim's gonna be there, like, blue ribbons on.
• 1:01:45
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 1:01:45
  Tim's there.
• 1:01:46
Logan Newsom: I mean, it's, it's wide open.
• 1:01:47
  Now-
• 1:01:47
Sam Silvers: Going, going for the throat.
• 1:01:48
Logan Newsom: Going for the throat.
• 1:01:49
  Yep.
• 1:01:49
  Yep.
• 1:01:50
Um, Medina Meltdown 25, four for four, just-
• 1:01:54
  Sam Silvers: Four for four
• 1:01:54
... Logan Newsom: just the, uh, you know-
• 1:01:55
Sam Silvers: Just put the whoop on them boys
• 1:01:57
Logan Newsom: I, I believe they call that BTA is what Michael Irvin says.
• 1:01:59
But, um, yeah, what's that look like in a summer jackpot and what does
• 1:02:02
your drench protocol look like as compared to maybe what you might
• 1:02:06
do in the spring in a major show?
• 1:02:08
  Sam Silvers: Yeah.
• 1:02:08
So, um, I think, Abigail, I think that's a great question.
• 1:02:12
Um- Me personally, for jackpots, it, it's hot, it's in the summer, um,
• 1:02:18
they're young, we're still trying to get their guts lined out, we're
• 1:02:22
  trying to get everything right.
• 1:02:23
I am not a big proponent of drenching with a bunch of stuff while at a jackpot.
• 1:02:29
Typically what we do, hay, feed, and water at jackpots.
• 1:02:33
  That's what we're big on.
• 1:02:34
Now, if I'm there and one, I am really losing one, I can tell that he's stressing
• 1:02:39
hard, just doesn't look right, I might add some electrolytes in there, something like
• 1:02:43
a Resorb or, or, or something like that.
• 1:02:45
But I typically do not drench with anything at jackpots.
• 1:02:50
  It's hay, feed, and water.
• 1:02:52
  Yeah.
• 1:02:52
Logan Newsom: That's, uh... We're the same deal.
• 1:02:54
  We, we do Dyne water.
• 1:02:55
Like, I'll, I'll, I'll put a little of what I call, you know,
• 1:02:57
like a dollop of Dyne in there.
• 1:02:59
I think it, you know, you kinda get a little sugar-
• 1:03:00
  Sam Silvers: Little energy
• 1:03:01
... Logan Newsom: little sugar, a little energy.
• 1:03:03
And it ma- and it kinda sweetens it up, so they maybe kinda drink a little more when,
• 1:03:05
when you're on the road, not the show.
• 1:03:07
I do try to, um, at some point, and it usually happens more probably, like,
• 1:03:13
at our fall fairs, I try to start kinda figuring out how those sheep or goats
• 1:03:18
will react to maybe what we're gonna do-
• 1:03:20
  Sam Silvers: Sure
• 1:03:20
  Logan Newsom: in the spring.
• 1:03:21
You know, kinda, you know, start off with, like, our base drench, and
• 1:03:23
  I'll, you know, I won't go, like-
• 1:03:25
  Sam Silvers: Crazy
• 1:03:25
... Logan Newsom: three or four days out like we would at, you know, a major show.
• 1:03:28
But, like, if we're gonna show on a Saturday, you know, Thursday evening I
• 1:03:31
might start 'em on a little bit, just to kinda see, 'cause I think that can
• 1:03:33
be important, 'cause we've seen each one of those, like, one, you know,
• 1:03:37
they react different, but some of 'em, you know, they might, like, gas up and
• 1:03:40
kinda air up on you, and, you know, just kinda have, you know, like, kinda that
• 1:03:42
full, sloppy look, and so you're like, "Okay, that didn't really work great."
• 1:03:45
So we do do that a little bit more, but that, again, is, you know, probably
• 1:03:49
later on in the year, fall fairs, shows that maybe it's gonna be, like, an
• 1:03:53
overnight deal where we're unloading them and, you know, you kinda get
• 1:03:55
into a little more of that, you know-
• 1:03:56
Sam Silvers: But if we're talking about these June, July-
• 1:03:58
  Logan Newsom: June jackpots
• 1:03:59
Sam Silvers: August jackpots, I don't wanna sour their
• 1:04:01
guts with a bunch of stuff.
• 1:04:02
Logan Newsom: Yeah, I'm more interested in probably going and
• 1:04:04
swimming than I am, like, going back for the, you know, 9:00 drenching.
• 1:04:08
  I don't, I don't know where you're at on swimming pools.
• 1:04:10
Sam Silvers: You- You, you know I'm not gonna do the 9:00 drench
• 1:04:13
Logan Newsom: No, no, you definitely don't do that, and you don't like
• 1:04:16
to get in swimming pools either, so-
• 1:04:18
  Sam Silvers: No
• 1:04:18
  Logan Newsom: it's a no-fun zone.
• 1:04:20
Okay, that wraps up, uh, episode four.
• 1:04:22
Love to have you guys come back.
• 1:04:24
Um, listen, follow everywhere, Newsom Livestock, Silver's Livestock,
