- 0:00The art of a local rain out at your dirt track or your asphalt
- 0:05track. What does it take nowadays in
- 0:082025 to rain your local track out?
- 0:13You would be surprised, but let's go back into the past just
- 0:16a little bit. So right now I'm here at
- 0:19Mcalister's Deli right here in Arnold, MO.
- 0:23And as you can tell, look, look at these clouds.
- 0:25Now we're gonna talk about the art of a rain out at your local
- 0:30racetrack. OK, nice. 360 here just got done
- 0:34raining. Not, not a big rain whatsoever.
- 0:37Not, you know, Kenny Dobson up there in Jacksonville, IL, He's
- 0:41got a sold out World of Outlaw race and he just put on the
- 0:45Internet, hey, we just got a good rain, but it's over and
- 0:50we're racing tonight. But there's one reason Kenny
- 0:53Dobson is racing tonight, because the World of Outlaws is
- 0:57sold out. He sold all the tickets out.
- 1:00We got to get this race in because he's already got the
- 1:03money #1 now for the local promoters that have it all on
- 1:10the line. And they got a little 10
- 1:11thousand $20,000 purse. They got to hope you show up and
- 1:16they got to hope cars come or else they're going to lose their
- 1:21ass and they're going to have to shut this track down if they
- 1:24keep that up. So you need to show up.
- 1:28Let me tell you a quick story on the art of a rain out at your
- 1:31local racetrack. This is a true story.
- 1:34Right now I'm in Arnold, MO about 10 years ago.
- 1:37I'm living in Charlotte, NC, but my dirt shop is here in Arnold,
- 1:42MO and I am 30 miles from Tri-City Speedway in Granite
- 1:47City, IL and it's pouring here in Arnold, MO, but I'm 30 miles
- 1:53from the racetrack. It's pouring and I and I got on
- 1:56the Internet and I said, oh darn it.
- 1:58I'm I'm bummed out. I flew all the way here from
- 2:01Charlotte and it looks like we are rained out at Tri-City
- 2:04Speedway in Granite City, IL. My phone rings cause Tammy
- 2:11Gundaker, the owner of the racetrack, she saw that post and
- 2:16she said, Kenny, why did you get on the Internet and say that
- 2:20we're rained out? I said, Tammy, it's been pouring
- 2:24here. She says, Kenny, it's sunny
- 2:26here. And I said, but you're only 30
- 2:29miles away. Oh, it hasn't rained there, but
- 2:33it's rained here. I learned my lesson that day.
- 2:39I learned that back in those days, the weather apps weren't
- 2:43that great and you watch the weather, but you didn't believe
- 2:46it. People would go to the racetrack
- 2:50and confirmed whether there rained out or not.
- 2:53Back in my day, we'd go to the racetrack and we'd wait in our
- 2:58car if we're going to be rained out or not, right, Respond right
- 3:03here. Back in our day, we would go to
- 3:07the racetrack, we would drive there, we'd waste the money on
- 3:10the gas and we'd wait in our car because we're dirt racers, we're
- 3:15cheap. We're not going to pay to get
- 3:16in. Even though they'd give us the
- 3:18rain ticket and we could use it at the next race.
- 3:21We wanted that money, damn it. In our day we would go to the
- 3:25racetrack and we're going to look with our own eyes.
- 3:28Oh, it's raining. Yep, we're rained out now.
- 3:32Nowadays we look, look at the net Thunder.
- 3:38Nowadays we get on the Internet and they go, hey, it's going to
- 3:41rain. It's going to rain.
- 3:45And that, my friend, it's that simple.
- 3:48So nowadays, local race tracks have to cancel because of a
- 3:53forecast. It might not rain now.
- 3:58It's raining here in Arnold, but the ground's already dry and it
- 4:02hasn't even rained over in Tri-City Speedway in Granite
- 4:05City, IL right now. It has not rained over there.
- 4:08However, there's a forecast. And when these meteorologists,
- 4:13when they forecast these rains, that means you.
- 4:18We all say, well, we're not going to go.
- 4:19It's going to rain out, but what happens if it doesn't rain?
- 4:24What happens if it does not rain?
- 4:26Farmer City Council today, Tri-City Council today.
- 4:32These tracks, I'm going to defend them.
- 4:35They had to cancel. You know why?
- 4:39Because it's threatening weather and you weren't going anyway.
- 4:46And then some, sometime later tonight, you're all going to get
- 4:48on the Internet and go. We could a race.
- 4:50Well, hell, you weren't coming anyway.
- 4:54Sometimes it was better back in the day because you'd go to the
- 4:58racetrack and you all were there and it was packed.
- 5:02And if it rained, well, then we were rained out.
- 5:05Now you won't even go. And that is the art of a rain
- 5:08out. And it will shut a racetrack
- 5:11down. My brother Mike said something
- 5:14to me years ago. He goes, you know, these people,
- 5:17if they forecast a recession within a recession, what
- 5:21happened? Sometimes when people talk
- 5:24negatively and they forecast something, well, then it
- 5:27happens. So nowadays, even if it doesn't
- 5:30rain at your racetrack, Your local weather forecast has
- 5:33simply rained the race out. We can't race 'cause there's a
- 5:37negative forecast and you're not showing up.
- 5:40All right, I hope you all understand that I love Tri-City
- 5:44Speedway in Granite City, IL I love Farmer City.
- 5:48Some of these race tracks they simply have to cancel because
- 5:51there's a negative forecast and you weren't coming anyway.
- 5:55I miss the old days. We just go to the pit gate.
- 5:58Hey, it has a rain here, Let's race.
- 6:01And it was packed.
