- 0:07Speaker 1: years before. But with an old enemy, Largo Greeland, now
- 0:12Speaker 1: in Dodge City, Van Tover finds that leaving a violent
- 0:15Speaker 1: past behind is not always a simple matter. From CBS Radio,
- 0:21Speaker 1: this is Gunsmoke, Rock Bottom, Episode 261, originally broadcast April 7th, 1957.
- 0:29Speaker 1: William Conrad stars as Matt Dillon with Parley Bear, Howard McNair,

- 0:45Speaker 1: to the original broadcast.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's

- 1:05Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:08Speaker 2: gun smoke.

- 1:28Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that
- 1:32Speaker 2: moves west with young America. And the story of a
- 1:36Speaker 2: man who moved with it.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first
- 1:43Speaker 3: man they look for and the last they want to meet.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It's a chancy job. And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:52Speaker 4: And a little lonely. Oh, my God.
- 2:21Speaker 5: You and that doggone jail look like.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Home tonight, Mr. Dillon. It's been a long ride. Get
- 2:31Speaker 4: a pie going and some coffee started, will you, Chester?
- 2:34Speaker 4: I'll unsettle the horses. Yes, sir.
- 2:35Speaker 6: Matt?
- 2:37Speaker 4: What? It's Tover, Matt. Van Tover. Oh, hello, Van. I
- 2:42Speaker 4: didn't recognize you there in the dark.
- 2:44Speaker 7: I've been waiting for you, Matt. I wanted to talk
- 2:46Speaker 7: to you. Well... Alone, if it's all the same. No offense, Chester.
- 2:52Speaker 5: You owe none to it, Mr.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Stover.
- 2:54Speaker 5: I was just going in to make some coffee anyhow.
- 2:57Speaker 7: I'll make us all some.
- 2:58Speaker 6: Oh, Matt.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Why didn't you wait inside, man? The office is open.
- 3:03Speaker 7: I did for a while, but just couldn't stay set.
- 3:06Speaker 4: And I guess you have got something on your mind.
- 3:10Speaker 7: Matt, you know a lot about me.
- 3:13Speaker 8: You know, I tore around when I was younger before
- 3:15Speaker 8: I met Edna, and we got married and the kid come.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Yeah, like most men, man.
- 3:20Speaker 8: No, that ain't what I mean exactly. I mean, I
- 3:24Speaker 8: never quite got on the wrong side of the law,
- 3:27Speaker 8: but I've heard near dead a few times.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Well?
- 3:34Speaker 8: Well, I was mighty handy with a gun, man, and
- 3:38Speaker 8: I was too quick to use one a lot of times.
- 3:41Speaker 7: Sure, it was always self-defense, but.
- 3:45Speaker 4: What do you got, Matt, then?
- 3:48Speaker 8: Matt, you still got that gun I gave you two
- 3:50Speaker 8: years ago when the kid was born?
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it's in the office in the safe.
- 3:55Speaker 7: You got any need for it?
- 3:58Speaker 4: No.
- 4:01Speaker 7: I want it back.
- 4:05Speaker 4: I better get this other saddle off.
- 4:06Speaker 7: No, Matt, wait.
- 4:09Speaker 8: I can go buy another gun. It's just that I'm
- 4:11Speaker 8: used to that one. I carried it for years. And
- 4:15Speaker 8: I got to have one tonight. You haven't worn a
- 4:17Speaker 8: gun for two years now, Van. You told me when
- 4:20Speaker 8: you gave it to me you were through with gunfighting.
- 4:23Speaker 7: I didn't ask for this.
- 4:24Speaker 3: For the kid's sake and Edna's. So you told me.
- 4:28Speaker 4: That's true, Matt. You said you.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Only had one enemy in the world and you hadn't
- 4:32Speaker 3: heard of him for years. It's a matter of you
- 4:34Speaker 3: gone out and made yourself a new one?
- 4:37Speaker 4: No.
- 4:37Speaker 9: No.
- 4:39Speaker 4: It's the same one, huh?
- 4:41Speaker 7: He's caught up with you? No, it was 12 years ago.
- 4:47Speaker 8: Clear down in Durango. Fight over a girl, nobody. She
- 4:51Speaker 8: didn't even count.
- 4:53Speaker 7: I just fought easy in them days was all.
- 4:56Speaker 10: Yeah, sure.
- 4:57Speaker 8: This fella drawed on me and I put a bullet
- 5:00Speaker 8: through his leg. He was still laid up with it
- 5:02Speaker 8: when I rode out of town. And he swore he'd
- 5:05Speaker 8: find me and kill me. I didn't pay it much mind.
- 5:08Speaker 8: We all talked big.
- 5:09Speaker 4: When we were young, you know. I know. He rode
- 5:13Speaker 4: into Dodge today.
- 5:16Speaker 7: He's been asking for me.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Uh-huh. What's his name?
- 5:23Speaker 7: Largo Greeland. He's a big fella. He's built like a bull.
- 5:28Speaker 7: Always wears two guns and he can shoot with either hand.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Van, does your shoulder still bother you, son?
- 5:37Speaker 7: What's that got to do with it?
- 5:38Speaker 4: Look, you might as well have given me that gun
- 5:40Speaker 4: four years ago when that horse fell and rolled on you. Now,
- 5:44Speaker 4: you get mixed up in something like this.
- 5:46Speaker 3: With that bad shoulder, and you'll be dead before you
- 5:48Speaker 3: even get your gun clear of the leather.
- 5:50Speaker 4: You must be out of your head.
- 5:52Speaker 7: You think I want to meet Largo?
- 5:53Speaker 4: You sure act like it.
- 5:55Speaker 7: He's come after me.
- 5:56Speaker 10: Twelve years he's been looking.
- 5:57Speaker 7: That's a lot of hate, Max.
- 5:59Speaker 8: And if I don't call him here in town, he'll
- 6:01Speaker 8: come on out to the ranch. I got Ed and
- 6:03Speaker 8: the kid to think of.
- 6:04Speaker 4: All right, then think of them. Stay out of this
- 6:06Speaker 4: and leave it to me.
- 6:07Speaker 7: You think I wouldn't like to? Matt, I'm scared.
- 6:11Speaker 4: I know what I'm up against, and I'm scared to death.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Then get out of town. Stay clear of him and
- 6:15Speaker 4: let me handle it. It's not your fight, Matt. It
- 6:18Speaker 4: might be.
- 6:19Speaker 7: Well, ain't no use arguing about it.
- 6:21Speaker 8: If it's all right with you, I'll take my gun
- 6:23Speaker 8: and not bother you no more.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Why don't you use your head, Van? You haven't got
- 6:26Speaker 4: a chance. I want the gun, Matt. I want it now.
- 6:35Speaker 4: All right.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Come on.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Chester? Yes, Mr. Dillon? Get Van Tover's gun out of
- 6:52Speaker 4: the safe, will you?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Matt, I give up.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I can't figure it out. I'll figure what out, Kitty?
- 7:18Speaker 10: You.
- 7:18Speaker 1: The way you're acting.
- 7:19Speaker 4: How am I acting?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Well, you've been leaning on the bar for the last
- 7:24Speaker 3: hour with the same drink beside you.
- 7:26Speaker 10: You haven't even touched it.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Well, I guess I'm not thirsty.
- 7:29Speaker 1: That's not bad, Matt.
- 7:32Speaker 10: You're drawn tighter than a $ 2 pinch. You're waiting for something,
- 7:36Speaker 10: aren't you?
- 7:39Speaker 4: Uh, don't worry about it. It's no use borrowing trouble.
- 7:43Speaker 10: If anybody's about to borrow from it, it's you.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Kitty, will you excuse me for a minute?
- 7:50Speaker 7: Look, you stay here and finish your drink. I, uh.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I got something that needs attentive to.
- 7:56Speaker 6: I'll be back in a little while.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Your name Largo Greeland? Might be. What's on your mind, mister?
- 8:17Speaker 4: I'm a marshal here in Dodge. One of them, huh? Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:24Speaker 7: You, uh....
- 8:27Speaker 4: Ever been on the Cherokee Strip, partner? Oh, now I see.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Van Tover come whining to you, I reckon. Got you
- 8:37Speaker 4: to do his fighting for him, huh? I'm not talking
- 8:40Speaker 4: about Tover.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I'm talking about some wanted bulletins I've been looking over.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Got your name and face on them. You don't say.
- 8:47Speaker 4: One of them's for murder. Down on the Cherokee Strip.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Van must have changed some... Spooks easier, for one thing.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Hollers for his hit. Forget about the plan. That's kind
- 9:01Speaker 4: of a hard thing to do, Marshal, when you've looked
- 9:04Speaker 4: for a man 12 years and finally found him. Understand
- 9:09Speaker 4: he's staked out over by the stockpins. Got cover at
- 9:13Speaker 4: the sides and behind. Sure looks like he ain't running
- 9:17Speaker 4: no chances. But I can wait. Let him sweat some.
- 9:24Speaker 4: He can't stay there forever. You're under arrest for murder, Largo. Now,
- 9:31Speaker 4: I'd like to blood you, Marshal. But I got other
- 9:35Speaker 4: business in town. Not now, you haven't. Oh, I ain't
- 9:39Speaker 4: gonna draw on you. More than likely, you got a
- 9:43Speaker 4: man somewhere behind me. No. I ain't gonna draw on you. Oh, boy!
- 9:59Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Marco. but I've had that kickin' trick tried
- 10:01Speaker 4: on me before. Now get up on your feet. Now
- 10:07Speaker 4: come on, mister, we're going to jail.
- 10:10Speaker 6: Come on.
- 10:27Speaker 10: Doggone it, man, I'm telling you. Someday you're going to
- 10:30Speaker 10: take one chance too many.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Oh, what do you mean, Doc?
- 10:33Speaker 10: Trying to arrest somebody you know is a killer. With
- 10:37Speaker 10: your gun in your holster.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Doc, a lawman that went around with a pistol in
- 10:41Speaker 3: his hand would last about a week.
- 10:43Speaker 10: Why?
- 10:44Speaker 4: Because every outlaw in town would figure he had a
- 10:47Speaker 4: right to ambush him.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Oh, you're in town kind of late, aren't you, Miss Troward?
- 10:56Speaker 10: Marshal, where's Van?
- 10:57Speaker 3: I don't know. Around town somewhere, I guess. Now, Doc,
- 11:00Speaker 3: you know Miss Tover, don't you?
- 11:02Speaker 10: Oh, do I?
- 11:02Speaker 4: Of course I know.
- 11:03Speaker 5: Who do you think delivered that baby of hers?
- 11:05Speaker 4: How are you, Edna?
- 11:06Speaker 10: Marshal, who's Van going to fight?
- 11:09Speaker 6: Fight?
- 11:11Speaker 10: He's wearing a gun.
- 11:12Speaker 4: First time in two years.
- 11:14Speaker 10: And he's in town looking for somebody. He wouldn't tell
- 11:16Speaker 10: me anything, but I know. I can feel it when
- 11:19Speaker 10: a man's mind's took up with killing.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Easy now, Miss Tover.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Whatever he might have been thinking, he can forget.
- 11:25Speaker 4: And you can, too. There's nothing to worry about.
- 11:28Speaker 1: That's easy to say.
- 11:29Speaker 4: It happens to be true.
- 11:31Speaker 3: The fellow he was worrying about's in jail.
- 11:36Speaker 4: I guess Van doesn't know it yet.
- 11:39Speaker 10: Are you telling me the truth, Marshal?
- 11:40Speaker 4: Yes, I am. Now, why don't you get yourself back
- 11:42Speaker 4: out to the ranch? That husband of yours is going
- 11:44Speaker 4: to be tired and hungry when he finally rides in tonight.
- 11:48Speaker 9: You.
- 11:49Speaker 10: You're sure this man's in jail, Marshal?
- 11:51Speaker 4: Yeah, he's there, all right.
- 11:52Speaker 10: Well, of course he's there. Now, you head for home,
- 11:54Speaker 10: young lady, before you really give Van something to worry about.
- 11:58Speaker 10: Gallivanting around alone this time of night? All right, Doc,
- 12:01Speaker 10: I will.
- 12:02Speaker 6: Good night.
- 12:03Speaker 5: And good night, Mark.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Good night, Mr. O'Rourke.
- 12:07Speaker 7: Blameful and worried overnight. Yeah, that's right, Doc.
- 12:11Speaker 4: The same as you were.
- 12:13Speaker 7: Same as I was.
- 12:15Speaker 10: Oh, you mean about you taking chances and all that.
- 12:19Speaker 7: Oh, that's different now.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Mr. Dillon! Ah, that Chester.
- 12:23Speaker 10: He can find more reasons to hoop and holler.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Yeah, what's the matter, Chester?
- 12:28Speaker 5: He jumped me right there in the cell. I fixed
- 12:30Speaker 5: him some water so he could clean up when he
- 12:32Speaker 5: come to, and he was just playing possum.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Are you hurt? No, I ain't hurt.
- 12:36Speaker 5: That ain't what I'm trying to tell you, Mr.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Dillon. Well, what is it then?
- 12:39Speaker 6: He got away.
- 12:59Speaker 5: My jolly, he sure didn't waste no time making himself scarce, Mr. Dillon.
- 13:03Speaker 4: No, he sure didn't. Doc, any sign of him around
- 13:08Speaker 4: the railroad depot? No, not a.
- 13:11Speaker 10: Whisper, man.
- 13:13Speaker 7: Quiet as a tomb over there.
- 13:15Speaker 10: And I didn't see Van Tover either.
- 13:19Speaker 4: We've got to find one of them before they find
- 13:21Speaker 4: each other.
- 13:21Speaker 7: It's just possible that he pulled stakes and let out, huh?
- 13:24Speaker 4: Not after 12 years looking for Dover, he's still around somewhere.
- 13:28Speaker 10: Well, you had him locked up in jail.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Oh, Mr.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Dillon, I just don't know how that happened.
- 13:33Speaker 10: He just fooled me, Lord. You're probably thinking about women.
- 13:37Speaker 10: They're always fooling you, too. Now, you look here, Doc.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Forget it, Chester. We all get taken at once in
- 13:42Speaker 4: a while.
- 13:43Speaker 5: I just don't know how he tricked me like that.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Well, never mind. It's done now. The thing to do
- 13:48Speaker 4: is to find him.
- 13:49Speaker 7: He hasn't had time to get very far.
- 13:51Speaker 6: Matthew!
- 13:52Speaker 4: Mr.
- 13:53Speaker 6: Dillon!
- 13:53Speaker 4: What? Uh, yeah. Over here, Miles.
- 13:56Speaker 5: I wonder what old Miles is doing out this time
- 13:59Speaker 5: of night. He's probably trying to peddle something, make another
- 14:01Speaker 5: five cents profit so he can sleep better.
- 14:03Speaker 7: I heard that, Doc.
- 14:05Speaker 9: I heard what you were saying behind my back.
- 14:06Speaker 10: There isn't anything I wouldn't say to your front, you
- 14:09Speaker 10: old skin-climber.
- 14:09Speaker 4: What's on your mind, Miles?
- 14:11Speaker 5: Matthew, there's something mighty funny going on.
- 14:14Speaker 4: How's that so?
- 14:15Speaker 7: I just came.
- 14:15Speaker 10: Past the livery stable. Mrs.
- 14:17Speaker 9: Stover started to drive out and some fella jumped into
- 14:20Speaker 9: the buggy with her.
- 14:21Speaker 4: What?
- 14:22Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 14:22Speaker 4: I hear it was a big fella, bent like a bull.
- 14:25Speaker 9: He made her turn around and go back into the stable.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Well, it looks like we've found Largo. Come on, let's go.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 14:50Speaker 7: Ain't no sign of life, Mr.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Dillon. There's no reason for him to advertise.
- 14:54Speaker 9: Well, he might have left.
- 14:55Speaker 5: It's been five minutes since I saw him. If you
- 14:58Speaker 5: saw them at all, you'd probably have been nipping at
- 15:00Speaker 5: that scotch whiskey of yours.
- 15:02Speaker 10: One of these days, Doc, you'll go too far.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Look out.
- 15:10Speaker 5: Well, I guess he ain't left yet after all.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Largo. Come on out of there with your hands up.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Me and the lady's too comfortable, Marshal. Why don't you
- 15:25Speaker 4: come and join us? Let her come out alone and
- 15:27Speaker 4: you won't get hurt. I don't think he'll get hurt.
- 15:31Speaker 7: That's why she's with me. Matt, what's going on?
- 15:34Speaker 4: You got Largo cornered in there. I heard a shot.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Go find her husband, Marshal. Tell him to be hurry.
- 15:40Speaker 4: She might still be breathing.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Marshal, no.
- 15:42Speaker 7: Matt, that's Edna.
- 15:43Speaker 10: Don't let Edna know.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Largo's got Edna in there. Wait a minute, man.
- 15:47Speaker 3: It won't help her any to walk out there and
- 15:49Speaker 3: get yourself killed.
- 15:50Speaker 7: There's no use arguing, Matt.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Oh, I guess you're right. There isn't any use arguing. Doc,
- 15:59Speaker 4: take care of him, will you?
- 16:01Speaker 3: Chester, get his gun. And see if you can hold
- 16:04Speaker 3: Largo's attention. Fire a couple of shots. I'm going to
- 16:07Speaker 3: try to slip in the back.
- 16:09Speaker 10: Okay, Mr.
- 16:10Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Hey, let me have his.
- 16:13Speaker 10: Gun, Doc.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Largo?
- 16:16Speaker 4: You ain't got a chance. Throw your gun out and
- 16:19Speaker 4: walk out of there with your hands up for me
- 16:21Speaker 4: and Mr.
- 16:21Speaker 10: Dillon comes in after you.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Come on, if you feel lucky. You think we don't
- 16:26Speaker 4: mean business, Lago?
- 16:27Speaker 10: That convince you any?
- 16:31Speaker 4: You better be careful, boys.
- 16:33Speaker 7: You're scaring the lady.
- 16:35Speaker 9: Me and Mr.
- 16:36Speaker 10: Dillon will give you just two minutes before we rush you.
- 16:39Speaker 4: You know where to find me. Come on, I'll pick
- 16:43Speaker 4: you up one at a time. Right after I shoot
- 16:47Speaker 4: the lady.
- 16:48Speaker 10: Of course. Eden, let me go. I don't know who
- 16:52Speaker 10: you are, but.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Shut up before you get me mad. Don't move, Largo.
- 16:55Speaker 6: Marshal.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Well. Sneaked in the back way. Like any ordinary pool cat.
- 17:07Speaker 7: Don't turn around, Largo.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Just drop that gun. Sorry, Marshal. A man waits 12
- 17:15Speaker 4: years for something. It ain't easy for him to just
- 17:19Speaker 4: give up and quit. You had all the chance you're
- 17:22Speaker 4: gonna get, Largo. You move that gun one.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Inch toward Miss Tobin, that's the last move you'll ever make.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Has to be a last move sometime, Marshal. So I reckon...
- 17:36Speaker 4: it might as well be now!
- 17:52Speaker 10: He... He's dead.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, he's dead. Oh, Marshall. You all right, Mr. Jones? Yeah, yeah,
- 18:05Speaker 4: I'm all right, Chester.
- 18:07Speaker 10: Uh.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Get her out of here, will you? Take her to Vanny.
- 18:13Speaker 3: You want to know that she's safe.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Yes, sir, I will.
- 18:16Speaker 5: Everything's all right now, Miss Tover. You just come along
- 18:21Speaker 5: with me now.
- 18:22Speaker 6: There we are.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Hey, Doc. Yes, lad?
- 18:37Speaker 7: Well, looks like I've done my job.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Now it's time for you to take over. Another core
- 18:45Speaker 4: in this case?
- 18:47Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right, Doc.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Another coroner's case.
- 18:52Speaker 6: Gunboat.
- 19:16Speaker 9: Produced and directed by Norman McDonald, stars William Conrad as
- 19:20Speaker 9: Matt Dillon, U.S.
