Transcript
- 0:04Welcome to the USA Cabinet Store podcast. I am
- 0:07Chris. And today we are answering the question
- 0:10we get asked more than almost any other in the
- 0:12showroom. Are gray kitchen cabinets out of style?
- 0:15Jessica, people are genuinely anxious about this
- 0:18one. They really are. And it is usually one of
- 0:21two people asking. Either they already have gray
- 0:24and somebody made a comment about it, or they
- 0:26are about to spend $15 ,000 and they want to
- 0:29know they are not making a mistake. Both deserve
- 0:32a straight answer rather than a designer opinion.
- 0:35So give me the straight answer. Gray is not out
- 0:37of style. Cool blue undertone gray is. And the
- 0:41thing that actually dates a kitchen is almost
- 0:43never the cabinets on their own. It is the whole
- 0:472010s package arriving together. Blue gray cabinets,
- 0:51gray wood look floors, a gray backsplash, bright
- 0:54white quartz and chrome hardware with nothing
- 0:57warm anywhere in the room. All right, but I want
- 0:59the numbers, because everyone in this industry
- 1:01has an opinion. Fair. The 2026 Howe's Kitchen
- 1:06Trends study surveyed 1 ,780 homeowners who were
- 1:10renovating. Wood came top at 29%, up six points
- 1:14in a single year. White was second at 28%, down
- 1:18five. Off white, 15. And then gray came in at
- 1:225%, with green just ahead of it at six. Gray
- 1:25is behind green. That sounds a lot like dead.
- 1:28It sounds that way until you look at the longer
- 1:30picture. We pulled United States search interest
- 1:34for gray kitchen cabinets going back five years.
- 1:37It peaked in January 2022. If you call that peak
- 1:40100, the reading at the end of August this year
- 1:43was 33. So yes, roughly a two -thirds decline.
- 1:47Still sounds like dead. Except it stopped falling.
- 1:50It has settled into a band rather than continuing
- 1:52towards zero, and it has been sitting in that
- 1:55band for a while now. And separately, the NKBA
- 1:59surveyed 634 kitchen and bath professionals,
- 2:03and 96 % of them still name neutrals as the most
- 2:06popular color family. Neutral did not die. Neutral
- 2:10got warmer. So what specifically makes a gray
- 2:13kitchen look dated? Blue undertone is the biggest
- 2:16one, especially under cool lighting. A gray with
- 2:20a blue base looks crisp on a paint chip and cold
- 2:22on a wall. Then the gray -on -gray stack. where
- 2:26the cabinets, the floor, and the backsplash are
- 2:28all gray. So nothing in the room advances or
- 2:31recedes. Wood tones are now close to half of
- 2:34all flooring choices. So a gray floor under gray
- 2:37cabinets is working against the room. And high
- 2:40gloss, which shows every fingerprint and reads
- 2:42commercial. You keep coming back to undertone.
- 2:45How does somebody actually check that at home?
- 2:48This is the most useful thing in the whole article,
- 2:50and it takes two minutes. Do not judge the gray
- 2:53on the chip. Hold the door sample vertically,
- 2:56flat against your own countertop edge, and look
- 2:58at it three times. Morning daylight, late afternoon,
- 3:02and after dark under the bulbs you are actually
- 3:04keeping. And what am I looking for? If it turns
- 3:07blue next to your counter, it is too cool for
- 3:09your room, whatever the paint is called. If it
- 3:12goes lavender or pink, it has a violet undertone
- 3:15your stone is pulling out. And if your fixed
- 3:17surfaces have cream, tan, gold, or warm oak in
- 3:21them, you want to go warmer. Grays, mushroom,
- 3:25taupe gray, or a brown -based charcoal. So which
- 3:28grays are actually still working? Warm gray first,
- 3:31anything carrying beige or brown underneath.
- 3:34Light gray is holding up better than people expect.
- 3:37In the related search data, light gray kitchen
- 3:40cabinet scores 97 out of 100, and there is no
- 3:43dark gray equivalent anywhere close to it. Then
- 3:46charcoal, which behaves more like a soft black
- 3:48than a pale gray, so it gives a room weight instead
- 3:51of trying to blend in. and two -tone, which I
- 3:53keep seeing everywhere. Two -tone is where the
- 3:55demand actually went, and the data is unusually
- 3:58clear about it. White and gray kitchen cabinets
- 4:00is the single top -related search on this whole
- 4:03topic, scoring 100. And Howes found 24 % of renovating
- 4:07homeowners now choose different colors on their
- 4:10upper and lower cabinets. Gray on the island
- 4:12or gray on the lowers with white above is a completely
- 4:15different proposition from gray everywhere. What
- 4:18about the specific paint names? People search
- 4:20those constantly. They do. and there is a signal
- 4:23hiding in which one survived. The named gray
- 4:26that still shows up as a search in its own right
- 4:28is agreeable gray, which happens to be one of
- 4:31the warmer beige -leaning ones. The warm one
- 4:33is the one that lasted. But I want to be careful
- 4:36here. We deliberately did not publish a warm
- 4:40or cool verdict on each paint name in the article,
- 4:43because undertone is not a fixed property of
- 4:45a paint. It is what that paint does next to your
- 4:48counter, under your light. So what is replacing
- 4:51gray? Not white, which is what most people assume.
- 4:54White fell five points in the same year gray
- 4:57slipped behind green. The real answer is wood
- 5:00at 29%, then off -white, then green. On the painted
- 5:04side, it is warm neutrals. Taupe, mushroom, cream.
- 5:09And on wall colors, warm white and off -white
- 5:11are the safe pairing for almost any gray. The
- 5:15rule that keeps coming up is to put the warmth
- 5:17on the walls and let the cabinet stay the cooler
- 5:19element. Not the other way around. Last one.
- 5:23Somebody is listening to this. They own a cool
- 5:25gray kitchen and they are now unhappy. What do
- 5:28they do? Change the bulbs before you change anything
- 5:31else. Moving from 4 ,000 Kelvin or higher down
- 5:34to 2 ,700 warms every gray surface in the room
- 5:38at once and it costs almost nothing. Then repaint
- 5:41stark white walls a warmer off -white. Then add
- 5:45wood somewhere. Stools, a shelf, a board. Most
- 5:50people who think they hate their cabinets actually
- 5:52hate their lighting, and that is a $50 problem
- 5:55rather than a $15 ,000 one. Give me the takeaways.
- 5:59Three. Gray is not out of style. Cool blue undertone
- 6:02gray is. Test the undertone against your own
- 6:05counter under your own light, because the paint
- 6:08name will not tell you. And if you already own
- 6:11gray and something feels off, change the bulbs
- 6:14in the wall color before you touch the cabinets.
- 6:16The full guide is on our site written by Helen
- 6:18Yassar out of our Fairfax showroom and reviewed
- 6:21by Emin Halak. It has the house numbers, a wall
- 6:24color table by shade, and a 12 question FAQ.
- 6:28Thanks for listening. Bring a sample home before
- 6:30you decide. Screens lie about gray more than
- 6:33any other color. See you next time.
