- 0:0710, 1966, the Washington Senators played against
- 0:10the Cleveland Indians at Cleveland Stadium for
- 0:12a Friday night game. The Senators were managed
- 0:14by Gil Hodges and entered the game with a 23
- 0:16-32 record and were starting Phil Ortega on the
- 0:19mound. The Cleveland Indians, managed by Bertie
- 0:22Tebbets, were competing for first place against
- 0:23the Baltimore Orioles and came to the game with
- 0:25a 31 -18 record. Sonny Siebert would take the
- 0:28mound for the Indians. This audio recording is
- 0:30from the radio broadcast featuring announcers
- 0:32Jimmy Dudley and Bob Neal. Siebert is making
- 0:35his 11th start of the year and his second against
- 0:37Washington. He's four and three, and like Tiant
- 0:43was last night and Bell was before his last start,
- 0:47looking for that elusive number five victory.
- 0:50Baldwin is outside and low. King has been kicking
- 0:54up a little fuss. Lately, as his batting average
- 0:58up to .277, four home runs and five doubles.
- 1:02Left -hand batter swings and pops one foul. First
- 1:05base side. Whitfield giving it a chase, but the
- 1:08wind has it and takes it back into the crowd.
- 1:11So the count will be ball one and strike one.
- 1:16Gosh, you know that a total of 37 Farmer baseball
- 1:19greats have already... signified that they are
- 1:25going to be here for Sunday's old -timers game.
- 1:28Bobby Avila, Vic Wertz, Larry Doby, and Johnny
- 1:30Pesky are the latest to accept invitations. Here's
- 1:34the pitch. Foul tip in the dirt, off his foot.
- 1:37The count is ball one and strike two. Three other
- 1:40former favorites accepted just a few hours earlier.
- 1:44Joe Smoke Gordon, Bob Lemon. and Eddie Yost,
- 1:49the guy that's coaching down at third. Naturally,
- 1:51he's got to be here. The old -timers will play
- 1:55their game at 1 .30 Sunday afternoon with the
- 1:59regular Cleveland -Washington game following.
- 2:02Avila, last Indian to win the American League
- 2:05batting championship, is coming up from Mexico,
- 2:07where he is president and field manager of the
- 2:10Puebla Club. Ground ball hit to the right side
- 2:13of the infield. Long hop taken by Hauser. Throw
- 2:15to first, and King is out. Side retired. That
- 2:18went on a 4 -3 play. Three up and three down,
- 2:21nothing across. The Indians coming to bat in
- 2:23the last half of the first inning. The score,
- 2:25Washington nothing, Cleveland nothing. You know,
- 2:27talking about the old time of game Sunday and
- 2:30the fact that Avila, Wertz, and Doby have accepted
- 2:34invitations, interesting to note that all three
- 2:36of these men were honored as Cleveland Baseball
- 2:39Writers Men of the Year. Doby in 50, Avila in
- 2:4254, Wertz in 1956. Dobie was the first Negro
- 2:46to play in the American League. He broke in with
- 2:48the Indians in 1947. What a year he had in 1952
- 2:53and in 1954. They'll all be here. Vic Wertz led
- 2:58the tribe in home runs and runs batted in. Two
- 3:00years, 56 and 57. But a host of others. Here
- 3:08we go in the Indians' half of the first inning.
- 3:11Phil Ortega, the right -hander, delivers. Pitch
- 3:14is swung on to drive. Fly ball to right field.
- 3:17Not too far for King. He's back under it, and
- 3:20he makes the catch. Looked good when it left
- 3:22the bat, but it didn't carry. Routine fly ball,
- 3:25it turned out. Phil Ortega and Pete Rickard give
- 3:29the Senators two fine pitches and a good lefty
- 3:34-righty combination. In fact, they hold the part
- 3:37of a rather remarkable record. In the history
- 3:40of the American League, there have been only
- 3:41four instances where pitches have struck out
- 3:44seven consecutive batters. Ortega is one of them.
- 3:47Rickard is another. They both pitch for the same
- 3:49club. Ortega fires a strike down to Chico Simone,
- 3:53now batting. Chico batting .242. And trying to
- 3:57get out of the way of that inside pitch, it fouls
- 4:01off the bat, counters two strikes. Rickard whiffs
- 4:04seven Detroit Tigers on the 24th of April. And
- 4:07Ortega followed May 29th when he struck out seven
- 4:10consecutive Red Sox. And a... Now it is two strikes.
- 4:16We get the sign from the umpire. The pitch outside.
- 4:21A Washington mathematician figured out the odds
- 4:25against this business of two pitchers striking
- 4:27out seven men in a row, two pitchers on the same
- 4:31club. You know what the odds against it were?
- 4:3325 ,000 to one. The pitch is swung on. Popped
- 4:38up into shallow center. Right back of second.
- 4:40The wind will hold it up. The shortstop Brinkman
- 4:42is under it and he has it for out number two.
- 5:06Leon Wagner's at bat. First pitch swinging a
- 5:16high pop foul off to the left and the wind carries
- 5:19it out of play. Casanova gave it a try, but this
- 5:21wind is still quite strong here off the lake.
- 5:30You know, you've got to believe it's pretty tough
- 5:32to strike out seven batters in a row. Sometimes
- 5:36it's tough to strike out seven batters, period.
- 5:41Ortega's pitch. Ball one outside. Ball one and
- 5:45strike one. Phil Ortega, the tall right -hander.
- 6:01Delivers a strike. Fastball, letter high to the
- 6:03outside corner. Wags is in a slump so badly.
- 6:10He says, I'm swinging when I should be taking
- 6:12and I'm taking when I should be swinging. The
- 6:15old story. You're looking for the right zigzag
- 6:18and you can't get them together. One and two
- 6:23pitch. Swung on and there goes a long drive to
- 6:26a right field. He didn't zig on that one. He
- 6:28zagged, baby. been suffering in the throws of
- 7:13a slump that had seen his batting average down
- 7:16to 259. This is number six, his sixth home run.
- 7:21The batter now is Max Alves, right hand hitting
- 7:23third baseman. He bunched to the third base side,
- 7:26coming in fast, the first baseman, a one -handed
- 7:28pickup, not in time with a throw. Base hit for
- 7:31Max Alves. He caught Bob Savarin sitting back
- 7:36on his heels, playing in a deep position. Here's
- 7:40another way of saying it. And Max laid down a
- 7:43bunt, beat it out for base in. You catch that
- 7:45third baseman back there. It's a beautiful spot.
- 7:51It also opens the way for another guy who swings
- 7:54from the left side. Fred Whitfield. Batting .243.
- 8:01Swing and a foul back to the screen. The Indians
- 8:03lead 1 -0. Wagner is now tied with Whitfield
- 8:08with six home runs apiece. Alvis still leads
- 8:14the club in hits with 47. That was his 47. Runner
- 8:19on. The pitch is too low. Ball one. Would you
- 8:26believe it? Fred Whitfield took a pitch. I mean,
- 8:31it was over the plate, but it was a little low.
- 8:34Wingy likes to swing at all of them. Whitfield
- 8:38leads the club and runs batted in. A total of
- 8:4026. He's way ahead in that department. Ten ahead
- 8:45of Calavito and Alvis. Throw the first by Ortega.
- 8:53Ortega has won five and lost two. The pitch is
- 8:57a changeup. Ball two high and outside. Ball two
- 9:02and strike one. The pitch is fouled back into
- 9:06the upper stands. Be alive up there. Whoops.
- 9:14People falling. Ball two and strike two. Ortega's
- 9:20full name is Filomino Coronado. Coronado. He's
- 9:266 '4". Born in Gilbert, Arizona. Ortega, you
- 9:31know, was signed originally by the Dodgers. They
- 9:34landed him for a $70 ,000 bonus. The pitch, swing
- 9:38and a miss. He struck him out. Fred Whitfield
- 9:41goes down swinging. Side is retired. The Indians
- 9:45get a run on two hits. One left. End of one.
- 9:49It is Cleveland 1, Washington nothing. Now we
- 9:54move into the first half of the second inning.
- 9:56Frank Howard will be leading off for Washington.
- 9:59Happy to hear the good words from Sergeant W
- 10:02.D. Morris, State Highway Patrol, Columbus, Ohio.
- 10:05Enjoying the ball game? A lot of teachers here
- 10:09tonight, and we're mighty happy to have them
- 10:10with us. The batter up is Frank Howard, standing
- 10:17in, the jolly, gentle giant. Right -hand batter,
- 10:22average .269. He takes the strike. Curveball
- 10:25hitting the outside corner. It was interesting
- 10:27reading the bit about Mickey Mantle's comments
- 10:31on Gary Bell and Bell's terrific slider, which
- 10:36he was showing the other night. Bell had it working
- 10:38perfectly. Fouled in the dirt. Two strikes. Bell
- 10:44was making his slider hit the spots that he wanted
- 10:47to hit with it. That's terrific. ball one outside.
- 11:15One and two count. Wind up on the one and two.
- 11:24Pitch a swing and he misses. Struck him out.
- 11:29So he got the big one. Howard. Has hit seven
- 11:33home runs this year. Sure good to see Dale Mitchell
- 11:42and his son Dudley here at tonight's ballgame.
- 11:48First he's here for the old -timers game. The
- 11:53batter is Dick Ninn. First baseman. Left -hand
- 11:56batter. Average 2 -12. He looks at a strike.
- 11:59Boy, he let a beauty go by right down the middle.
- 12:03Joe Gordon and Bob Lemon have been added to the
- 12:05list of old -timers. Stars of the past who will
- 12:09be here. Pitch is swung on by Nen. A ground ball
- 12:15to the second baseman. There's Dick Hauser. He
- 12:17has it. The throw to first and Nen is out on
- 12:19a 4 -3 play. Sonny is making his 11th start and
- 12:27his second against Washington. He faced them
- 12:29and lost on May 18th. by a score of 4 -3. He
- 12:34also appeared against them in the presidential
- 12:36opener, remember? But that was a one -inning
- 12:39relief stint. McDowell won that ballgame. The
- 12:42batter is Don Locke. There's a strike. The slider
- 12:45worked the outside corner. Locke was inserted
- 12:48in the lineup when Valentine, Fred Valentine,
- 12:52wrenched his wrist in batting practice and had
- 12:55to leave the lineup. Savarin was moved up to
- 12:59the number two spot. There's a high pop -up off
- 13:01Locke's bat. Max Alves is moving in back of the
- 13:05mound. And he makes the catch. The side is retired.
- 13:09Three up and three down. Nothing across at the
- 13:12end of one and a half. It's Cleveland one, Washington
- 13:14nothing. Now we move into the last half of the
- 13:17second inning. Coming to bat is Rocky Calavito.
- 13:24Well, the summer is starting for a lot of youngsters
- 13:26and a lot of athletes around the countryside.
- 13:29But for the son of one of our fine policemen,
- 13:32whom we see around the ballpark almost daily,
- 13:36Gregory Olowski, undergoing an operation. Calavito
- 13:41at bat, swings and hits the ground ball to the
- 13:43third baseman. Savarin has it, throws to first
- 13:46in time. You know, this is an anniversary, Soda,
- 13:49for Rocky Calavito. It was seven years ago on
- 13:53this date, June 10th, 1959, June 10th, in Baltimore.
- 13:59Rocky Calavito hit four home runs. Remember that
- 14:02historic game? Brilliant night in Baltimore.
- 14:09But Rocky's having his troubles with that bat
- 14:12right now. Here's Dick Hauser, playing at second
- 14:17base in tonight's ballgame. Phil Ortega, after
- 14:22victory number six, delivers a strike. This kid
- 14:26who came along to Washington in that big trade
- 14:29involving Claude Osteen is another of the bonus
- 14:32bits of that trade that Washington is mighty
- 14:35proud of. That's got to be one of the great trades
- 14:39of all time. That's a ground ball to the shortstop.
- 14:41Brinkman has it. The throw to first, and Hauser
- 14:44is out on a 6 -3 play. The Indians lead 1 -0
- 14:46on Leon Wagner's home run. You figure that when
- 14:52the Dodgers give $70 ,000 for a pitcher, they
- 14:56figure he's got something. But the Dodgers sent
- 15:00Howard, Rickett, Ken McMullen, Nick Nin, along
- 15:07with Ortega for an infielder named John Kennedy
- 15:14and a pitcher Claude Osteen. That was in 1964.
- 15:20Two out, Askew at bat, swings on the first one.
- 15:23It's a high pop -up and a shallow right. Going
- 15:25out, the second baseman, Blazingame, wants it,
- 15:27and he has it. Boy, that was a quick inning.
- 15:30Three Indians up and three Indians down. No runs,
- 15:34no hits. At the end of two, the score is Cleveland
- 15:371 and Washington nothing. Now we move into the
- 15:42first half of the third inning with the Indians
- 15:43leading by a score of 1 -0. And here to take
- 15:46us along is Bob Neal. Bob, come in. Thank you,
- 15:49Jimmy, and hello again, everybody. As we move
- 15:51now to the top of the third, the Indians holding
- 15:53a 1 -0 lead. The Indians and the Washington Senators
- 15:56will be here again tomorrow night. Game time
- 15:58tomorrow will be 6 o 'clock. First man to face
- 16:02Sonny Siebert in the top of the third will be
- 16:04Paul Casanova, the catcher. The last time Washington
- 16:07was here, he rolled into the city of Cleveland
- 16:10with a batting average around .433. And by the
- 16:14time he had left, the Indians had cooled him
- 16:16off to down about .344. But he still represents
- 16:21the long ball threat, although not with as much
- 16:23consistency as he broke in. Paul Casanova, tall,
- 16:27slender young catcher who originally belonged
- 16:30in the Indian organization. Standing in, right
- 16:33-hand batter, Sonny Siebert with a one -to -nothing
- 16:36lead. Works now on the first pitch. Strike on
- 16:38the outside corner. Casanova currently batting
- 16:44240. Has three home runs, one triple, and five
- 16:48doubles. Got 11 RBIs. And he moves around back
- 16:53of that plate. Siebert's one -strike pitch. There's
- 16:56a solid one -hopper to Chico Simone. Throws across
- 17:00to Whitfield, and he got him. Boy, that ball
- 17:02was shocked. One out in third. We just got news
- 17:08of a big trade made between the New York Yankees
- 17:11and the Kansas City A's. The Yankees have given
- 17:14up Gil Blanco, a young left -handed giant, 6
- 17:18'5", 217 pounds, Bill Stafford, whom they just
- 17:22recalled from Toledo, and Roger Repose, a fleet
- 17:26-footed outfielder, for Fred Talbot, a right
- 17:28-hander, and Bill Bryan, the left -handed batting
- 17:31catcher. Here's a fastball strike to Eddie Brinkman.
- 17:35The Yankees are... Picking up a good right -hander.
- 17:41Giving up Bill Stafford, who did some pretty
- 17:43good work for Toledo. And a young man with potential.
- 17:49Curveball in there for strike two. One to nothing.
- 17:57That's the score as Eddie Brinkman stands in
- 18:00facing Sonny Siebert with one out here in the
- 18:02third. Two strikes now as Sonny Siebert checks
- 18:09once again with Joe Askew. Joe wearing his new
- 18:11helmet -type hat. Now the 0 -2 pitch. And it's
- 18:15a little outside. It's one ball and two strikes.
- 18:22Joe Pignitano pacing up and down at first base.
- 18:26Eddie Yost at third. Now the 1 -2 delivery. It's
- 18:33swing and a miss, and it's strike three as Siebert
- 18:35threw the fastball right by him. Two strikeouts
- 18:38now for Sonny Siebert. And let's pause. Ten seconds
- 18:43for station identification. This is the Cleveland
- 18:46Indians baseball network. Now the pitch coming
- 18:53to Ortega. Fastball by Sonny Siebert over the
- 18:56inside corner for strike one. Sonny really humming
- 18:59that ball in there. The outfield split a little.
- 19:03Davalio's in right center. Calavito's shallow
- 19:05in right. Backed up in left is Wagner. Next pitch,
- 19:08right in there for strike two. There's a report,
- 19:13not confirmed yet, that the San Francisco Giants
- 19:16have sent pitcher Bob Shaw to the New York Mets.
- 19:21Here's the 0 -2. There's a foul away, and it's
- 19:24no balls, two strikes. The Indians leading 1
- 19:28-0 on Wag's home run into the right field seats.
- 19:32Breeze blowing across. Now the pitch. He swings
- 19:37on a curveball and he misses. Strike three. So
- 19:39Sonny Siebert has retired nine of the Washington
- 19:42centers in order. Picks up his third strikeout.
- 19:45And in the middle of the third inning, it's Cleveland
- 19:47one, Washington nothing. Now we go to the bottom
- 19:51of the third inning. The Indians leading one
- 19:53to nothing on Leon Wagner's home run. Here's
- 19:55Sonny Siebert now to take a look at Phil Ortega.
- 19:59Ortega, who signed for... Bonus upwards of $75
- 20:04,000 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Delivers a
- 20:12strike. Philomino Coronado, Phil Ortega. There's
- 20:24a swing and a miss on the fastball and a strike
- 20:26two. Ortega really bends that arm. He goes way
- 20:29back. Almost looks double jointed. Right arm
- 20:32delivery by our take is very similar to one of
- 20:35Don Drysdale, except Drysdale comes a little
- 20:37more sidearm. Alone outside and it's one ball,
- 20:41two strikes. Outfield straight away for Washington.
- 20:55Howard in left, Locke in center. King is in right
- 20:58field. Sabrine at third. Now the one -two pitch.
- 21:03It's a pop fly. In foul territory is Dick Nen,
- 21:07cashing over the catcher, waving to him, and
- 21:09Nen has it, and there's one away. So Sonny Siebert
- 21:11fouls to the first baseman. One out in the bottom
- 21:14of the third inning. The Indians have a total
- 21:16of two hits, a home run by Wags in the first,
- 21:18a single by Albus on a bunt. And since that time,
- 21:22young Phil Ortega's retired five Indians in a
- 21:24row. Now he'll take a look at Vic D 'Avalio.
- 21:28Little Victor batting 229. Now Ortega ready and
- 21:44he fires. A fastball bunt attempt foul. D 'Avelio
- 21:50is the kind of bunter that throws the bat out
- 21:52there, leaves it and sort of suspends it in midair
- 21:55while he's running down the baseline. And it's
- 21:59foul, and it's strike one. Ortega, tall, young
- 22:06right -hander. Looks like that arm's going to
- 22:10come loose half the time. Six foot four. Fires
- 22:12a little low. One and one. Remember one of the
- 22:17years we were training out in Tucson, he was
- 22:19pitching, I believe, for the Mesa High School.
- 22:22He had an incredible record. He was as big then
- 22:26as he is now. Here's the 1 -1. Outside with a
- 22:30fastball. It's two balls and a strike. Here's
- 22:34to get by primarily with his fastball. And they've
- 22:38been trying to teach him how to throw the breaking
- 22:40ball and not to hang the curve. Got a good slider.
- 22:46Now the 2 -1 pitch. And it's a little too low
- 22:49and outside ball three. Ortega looking in, and
- 23:04he's ready to go. And it's too long inside, it's
- 23:08ball four. So Darvillio works him for a base
- 23:10on balls. Indians have a runner at first. Sure
- 23:16good to see Mrs. Ralph Loker. Well again, and
- 23:20back rooting for her favorite team, the Indians.
- 23:33Now the pitch to Chico Simone. Fastball. Casanova
- 23:36fires down and in at first. Back safely is D
- 23:38'Avelio. Casanova really whips that ball around.
- 23:49Now Ortega checking the runner at first. Vic
- 23:52D 'Avelio on with the walk. Leads away. There
- 23:54he fixes going and a foul tip. One and one. Chico.
- 24:01Simone trying to check his swing and didn't.
- 24:05And draws a 1 -1 count. Raise your eyes to the
- 24:17heaven. Here's the 1 -1 pitch. Ortega checking
- 24:23on Davalillo and throws over to first and he's
- 24:26back. George, a good kid, Susie, who's one of
- 24:33the coaches with the Washington Center. Ball
- 24:38two. According to Bertie Tebbets, the Indians
- 24:42badger, was the best knuckleball catcher he ever
- 24:45saw. And Susie's advice to young catchers who
- 24:49had to handle knuckleball pitches was to get
- 24:52down low and look up. Now the look over. And
- 24:58there he goes. And the pitch is swung on and
- 25:00missed. Casanova's throw is on the first base
- 25:03side. Safe. And they almost hit the umpire. Brinkman
- 25:07had to break over on the first base side a second
- 25:09to take the throw. And in so doing, he almost
- 25:12knocked Jerry Newdecker off his feet. D 'Amelio's
- 25:16got a stolen base. The Indians with a runner
- 25:18on second. And a swing and a miss by Chico Simone.
- 25:22And it's 2 -2. Simone pumping that bat as Ortega
- 25:31gets set. Davalio leads away from second. Swung
- 25:34on and there's a big hit to the left. Now take
- 26:02a 2 -0 lead and Wags, who had a home run his
- 26:05first time up, comes up to face the hard -throwing
- 26:08right -hander. Simone leads away. There's a ground
- 26:17ball. It's fouled just outside of first. Boyd
- 26:19Dickman went racing over there. That ball was
- 26:23scorched, too. Wags now has a total of six home
- 26:27runs, and he's got 15 RBIs. in the run batted
- 26:34in department is Fred Whitfield with 26. The
- 26:41outfield split around to the right. Simone with
- 26:44a long lead at first. Ortega checks him. Now
- 26:48comes down with a pitch. There's a swing and
- 26:50a high pop in the shallow left field. Could be
- 26:52trouble. Coming on is Howard. Going out is Brinkman
- 26:54and he got the ball. Simone trying to go to second
- 26:58and he's forced it. Throw and tags him and he's
- 27:06out. And here comes Gil Hodges out to protest.
- 27:11Apparently the second baseman Blazingame who
- 27:14took the throw juggled the ball while in the
- 27:17act of trying to force Chico Simone. Chico had
- 27:21held up and then tried to go to second base on
- 27:23the play and did get to second base. The throw
- 27:26was made by Eddie Brinkman into second base.
- 27:30But the ball apparently was juggled while...
- 27:33And the forced play was being attempted. Chico,
- 27:36figuring that possibly he was out, had gone beyond
- 27:39the bag and then suddenly turned for third where
- 27:41nobody was covering. Ortega raced over to cover
- 27:44the bag. And he took the throw coming over. So
- 27:52they're going to charge an error. Error charged
- 27:59to the shortstop. That got Simone to second,
- 28:06and then 6 -4 -1 on the play to get Simone, and
- 28:10Wagner goes to second on the throw. Eddie Brinkman
- 28:17had gone down along that left field line, a tough
- 28:20chance, and he had the ball in his glove, it
- 28:23dropped out. Then he made the throw to the second
- 28:26baseman, Blazingame, who was covering second,
- 28:28but umpire Neudecker said he was juggling the
- 28:30ball. Blazing game now showing that Simone had
- 28:33run out of the baseline. So now instead of getting
- 28:40Chico around to third, we've got Leon Wagner
- 28:44on second. Two out, the Indians have a run in
- 28:47as Davalio had scored on the single. But Wags
- 28:51on second, two down. Max Alves the batter. Pass
- 28:58ball low and in the dirt, blocked beautifully
- 29:00by Casanota. That was a kind of a wacky play.
- 29:14One ball to count. Max Alves waiting as Ortega,
- 29:17the tall right -hander, gets set and he fires.
- 29:19There's a strike called. It's one and one. The
- 29:22New York Mets today bought Bob Shaw from San
- 29:25Francisco. Price reported in excess of $20 ,000.
- 29:29He had a 6 .67 earned run average, 1 -4 -1 loss
- 29:33record. 16 -9 last year, and in 59 with the White
- 29:38Sox, he won 18 and lost 6. Inside, ball two and
- 29:44strike one. So a lot of trades moving around.
- 29:47The Aggies getting Fred Talbot, a right -hander,
- 29:50and Bill Bryan, a catcher from Kansas City, and
- 29:52giving up. Bill Stafford, a right -hand pitcher.
- 29:55Roger Repose, a left -handed swinging outfielder.
- 29:58And Gil Blanco, a 6 '5", 217 -pound, 20 -year
- 30:02-old pitcher. And probably some money. Now the
- 30:102 -1. And it's too low, and it's ball three.
- 30:12Three balls and a strike. Three balls and one
- 30:29strike. Max Alves trying to keep it alive. The
- 30:33Indians are now leading 2 -0. Got a run in the
- 30:36first and a run here in the third. And it's ball
- 30:39four to Max Alves. They sign balls. Two men on
- 30:43for the Indians. Two out and Fred Whitfield arrives.
- 31:03Mitchell is here. Joe Gordon's checked in. And
- 31:08they'll all be here on Sunday for the old -timers
- 31:10game starting at 1 .30. Fred Whitfield standing
- 31:15in, waiting on young Phil Ortega. Wags with a
- 31:22pretty good lead from second. Max Alves jumps
- 31:24off to lead at first, and the pitch now to Wingy.
- 31:26Takes a swing on a curve, but he misses strike
- 31:28one. One strike to count. Wags again, edging
- 31:41down towards third. Max Alves moves away from
- 31:43first. Now the stretch in the pitch. Another
- 31:47curveball popped into right center field. Coming
- 31:49on as the center fielder locked. He's there and
- 31:51he makes the catch. So for the Indians in the
- 31:54third inning, one run, one hit, one error, two
- 31:59left. At the end of three, Cleveland two and
- 32:01Washington nothing. Now we're ready to go to
- 32:05the top of the fourth inning and the Indians
- 32:07leading in this ballgame by a score of 2 -0.
- 32:10Sonny Siebert will be taking a look at the top
- 32:13of the batting order now. Sonny put them down
- 32:15in order in the first, second, and third. He's
- 32:17posted three strikeouts. And there has not been
- 32:20a Washington center hit the ball out of the infield
- 32:22so far. Joe Eskew makes the throwdown of the
- 32:25second baseman, Dick Hauser, tonight. Houser,
- 32:29who's been bugged with a sore thumb, happened
- 32:32to pass Bertie Tebbets earlier this evening.
- 32:33Bertie asked him how he was feeling and he responded
- 32:35with the word, fine. And Bertie responded with
- 32:38a couple of words, you're in. John Blazingame
- 32:47standing in against the right -hander Sonny Sievert.
- 32:51Blazingame with a 2 .02 batting average. First
- 32:55pitch by Sonny. A ground ball right side. Hauser
- 32:58charging in. Flips over to the first base from
- 33:00Whitfield. There's one away. What is the game
- 33:03bouncing out? Second to first. 4 -3. Hauser to
- 33:07Whitfield. And the batter now will be Bob Savarine.
- 33:18Savarine bounced back to the pitcher, Sonny Siebert,
- 33:21in the first inning. Eddie Yost coaching at third
- 33:28in the first pitch by Siebert. Fastball in tight
- 33:31on him. Ball one. One out, one ball to count.
- 33:38Nobody on. And the next pitch is a swing and
- 33:41a miss and it's one and one. Indians with two
- 33:49runs on three hits and no errors. Boston and
- 33:53Baltimore have gotten underway. No score at the
- 33:56end of one. Is that Stang pitching? Thank you,
- 33:59Dick. Now the 1 -1 pitch. There's a ground ball
- 34:03to Whitfield. Grabs it, steps on the bag, and
- 34:05there's two away. Lee Stang going against Wally
- 34:12Bunker. No score at the end of one inning. And
- 34:18the batter now will be Jim King. The outfield
- 34:25playing Jim King, a good pull hitter and long
- 34:28ball plowder. Pulled around to the right. Now
- 34:32the pitch by Siebert. There's a swing and a miss
- 34:34on a curve ball. Strike one. Cincinnati has failed
- 34:40to score against the New York Mets. Atlanta,
- 34:44Pittsburgh just getting underway. Cards and Phil,
- 34:46Chicago and Houston. Now the one strike pitch.
- 34:50Another curve, this one a little inside. Ball
- 34:53one, strike one. One and one with two out. Nobody
- 35:06on. Sonny Siebert pitching in the fourth. Little
- 35:13outside. Two balls and a strike. Don't forget
- 35:19tomorrow night's game with Washington. Six o
- 35:23'clock. Next pitch, swing and a miss, and it's
- 35:39strike two. By the way, that rained out game
- 35:44with New York last night has been reset as part
- 35:46of a twiniter on Friday, August 5th. That makes
- 35:50the weekend with the Yankees a big five -game
- 35:52affair. Two games on Friday night, one on Saturday
- 35:54afternoon, and two on that Sunday. There's a
- 36:03fly ball hit into shallow left field. Coming
- 36:05on is Wagner and he makes the catch. Well, that
- 36:09was a long run by Wags and he came up with it.
- 36:12First ball hit to the outfield. And so Sonny
- 36:15Siebert now has retired. The first 12 men to
- 36:18face him in order. And in the middle of the fourth
- 36:21inning, the score Cleveland 2 and Washington
- 36:24nothing. Now we go to the Indian half of the
- 36:27fourth inning. And leading it off, batting in
- 36:29the number six spot tonight is Rocky Calavito.
- 36:32Indians have two runs on three hits. They got
- 36:35a run on the first inning when Wags poked his
- 36:37sixth home run of the year with two outs. They
- 36:40went down in order in the second and in the third
- 36:42with one out, a walk to D 'Abelio. Stolen base
- 36:45and a single by Simone. So the Rock is up there
- 36:49batting .224. Don Blazingame, who over the years
- 36:53has bugged Calavito a little bit by moving around
- 36:55near second base. Popping his glove. Checking.
- 37:03Moves a little bit now. And the pitch to Rocky.
- 37:05Swings and he drives a fly ball foul down the
- 37:08right field line. Racing over is Dick Nann going
- 37:11over the track and he backhands it beautifully.
- 37:13Nice play by the Washington first baseman. Calavito
- 37:17fouls out to Nann. One out for the Indians in
- 37:27the fourth inning. They lead it 2 -0. Sonny Siebert
- 37:34has not allowed a Washington Senator to reach
- 37:36first base. Here's Dick Hauser standing in, bounced
- 37:41out his first time, takes a fastball over the
- 37:44outside corner for a strike. Dick batting 262.
- 37:55Ortega fires. There's a ground ball left side.
- 37:58Brinkman moving to his left, back of second,
- 38:00throws to first. He's got him, and there's two
- 38:02away. Short to first, Brinkman to Dick Nen. Two
- 38:07down in the fourth inning, and Joe Askew, the
- 38:09batter, he popped out to the first baseman his
- 38:11first time up in the second inning. And the first
- 38:21pitch is a strike on the inside corner. Checks
- 38:28away, and it's one and one. The pitch was inside
- 38:30as Joe Askew checked his swing. Now one ball
- 38:34and one strike. Two down. We're playing in the
- 38:36bottom of the fourth inning. Outfield straight
- 38:41away. Ortega works on the 1 -1. And this one's
- 38:45too high. Ball two and strike one. Phil Ortega,
- 38:51who's won five and lost two. Gets set. Comes
- 38:55down with the 2 -1 pitch. There's a looper. The
- 38:58second baseman backing up. He gloves it and that's
- 39:00all. Askew pops to Don Blazingame in second base.
- 39:04In the fourth inning, for the Indians, nothing
- 39:06across. And at the end of four innings of play,
- 39:09it's the Indians two and the Washington Senators
- 39:11nothing. Now, fans, we move into the first half
- 39:17of the fifth inning. The Lions score. Cleveland
- 39:19two runs, three hits, no errors. Washington no
- 39:21runs, no hits, and one error. Phil Ortega for
- 39:25Washington. Sonny Siebert for the Indians. Right
- 39:29now, while we have the time, let's pause briefly
- 39:32for station identification. This is the Cleveland
- 39:35Indians baseball network. One of the great second
- 39:52basemen in the history of the Indians and the
- 39:54American League, Joe Gordon. Just walked in to
- 39:57say hello, along with Tony Cavoli. Tony's not
- 40:00on the All -Star squad, but he's just a visitor.
- 40:05But Gordon is, along with Hegan, Harder, Gomez,
- 40:09Grove, and a host of others. Here's Sunday for
- 40:12the old -timers' day game. Howard takes ball
- 40:15when inside. Big Frank Howard, 6 '7", 250 pounds,
- 40:19stands tall. Siebert's pitch is a strike. Slider
- 40:26worked the outside corner at the knees. Boston
- 40:28and Baltimore are underway. No score. End of
- 40:30one. Lee Stang for Boston and Wally Bunker for
- 40:36Baltimore. Here's the pitch. There's a fly ball
- 40:41to straightaway center. Vic Davalillo moves over,
- 40:46under, and he makes the catch. Every out builds
- 40:50up. A little more pressure. Every pitch becomes
- 40:54a little more important as Sonny Siebert narrows
- 40:58the halfway, nears the halfway mark in a perfect
- 41:01ball game. No senator has reached first base.
- 41:09Nick Nann is the batter. He grounded out his
- 41:11first time up. A hard ground ball to the second
- 41:13baseman. Ball went inside. Three, six, nine,
- 41:17twelve, thirteen men have gone down in order.
- 41:24Locke is on deck. Eddie Yost walking up and down
- 41:28in the coach's box at third. The pitch is low
- 41:31and into the dirt. There's ball two. Ball two,
- 41:33no strikes. Joe Pignatano is coaching at first
- 41:37base. Tonight is the Indians' annual teacher's
- 41:51night here at the stadium. The pitch is a strike.
- 41:56Good changeup is over. And tomorrow afternoon,
- 41:59here at the stadium, prior to the game tomorrow
- 42:02night, which will be at 6 o 'clock, the Tribe
- 42:05will conduct a clinic for more than 3 ,600 high
- 42:08school baseball players. There's ball three high
- 42:11and inside. Three and one. Nen looks down to
- 42:17the third base coach to see what he should do.
- 42:273 -1 the count. The outfield is deep and around
- 42:29to right. The Indians lead 2 -0. Nen batting
- 42:322 -10. Now the 3 -1 pitch. Coming on. Ball four
- 42:36high and outside. There is the first base runner.
- 42:41In the ballgame, Nen with a walk. On at first
- 42:44and coming to bat is Don Locke. Last night's
- 42:53postponement was the fifth for the Indians at
- 42:55home this season. The game has already been rescheduled.
- 43:06Seabirds pitch to Locke. A strike. Curveball
- 43:09over the outside corner. Throw to first by Askew,
- 43:11who has a quick move to the bases with runners
- 43:15on. He keeps them alert. Casanova, the catcher,
- 43:25is on deck. One out. The pitch is too high. Ball
- 43:29one. Ball one and strike one. Don't forget the
- 43:36Boston Red Sox will be in here next week, Monday
- 43:39and Tuesday. The Red Sox with one of the most
- 43:43sensational rookies in the game today, this year.
- 43:48Great Scott, George Scott. The exciting Carl
- 43:51Yastrzemski. Tony Conigliaro and a host of others
- 43:55will be here. The pitch swing and a foul. Out
- 43:59of the catch is Mitt and a fine catch by that
- 44:02gentleman. That's a baloney from Bobberton. Is
- 44:10he ever proud of it. He took two bows. That one
- 44:20particular box. Those seats have been passed
- 44:24down through the family. Year after year, Indian
- 44:30fans on deck. One and two on the batter, locked
- 44:34back in. Check to the runner with a look. See
- 44:37if it's pitch. Check swing, ball two, outside
- 44:40and low. Game time tomorrow will be 6 o 'clock,
- 44:526 p .m. Sunday, 1 .30 for the old -timers game
- 44:59to be followed by the regularly scheduled game,
- 45:02a single game between Washington and Cleveland.
- 45:05Now the pitch, 2 -2, sidearm, a swing and a miss,
- 45:08struck him out. Snaps on the first, but the runner
- 45:11is back ahead of it. Siebert gets his fourth
- 45:16strikeout. Casanova coming to bat. Paul Casanova
- 45:31bats right. Average 237. The wind is out of the
- 45:37north -northeast again tonight, blowing across
- 45:39the field from third to first. Runner at first
- 45:42leads. The pitch is outside. Nick Nin drawing
- 45:46a walk. The 3 -1 pitch was a little bit high
- 45:49and outside. And he became the first base runner
- 45:52for Washington. Cincinnati and the Mets are underway.
- 45:57No score. End of the first inning. Atlanta at
- 46:00Pittsburgh getting underway. St. Louis at Philadelphia
- 46:02starting. The pitch. Outside and low. Ball two.
- 46:07Again, Askew goes to first baseman Whitfield
- 46:10with a throw. But the runner is back. We're in
- 46:15the fifth. With two out. Siebert mowed down 13
- 46:27Senators before he gave up a walk to Dick Ninn.
- 46:31Now he has two out and is facing Casanova, right
- 46:34-hand hitting catcher. The turnover pitch, a
- 46:36strike. He's been shaving those corners nicely
- 46:39with his breaking stuff. Like Gary Bell. Sonny
- 46:47throws the hard slider, which is an excellent
- 46:49pitch. Particularly if you have good control
- 46:56of it. Long lead by the runner, Nin, at first.
- 47:04The pitch, swing and a miss. He went for a bad
- 47:06ball. And Casanova's a little bit put out at
- 47:10himself. Boston is here next Monday and Tuesday
- 47:20nights. After which the Indians head east to
- 47:31play the Yankees, the Senators, and the Red Sox.
- 47:35Now Siebert goes to first with the throw. Eddie
- 47:46Brinkman waiting in the on -deck circle. The
- 47:532 -2 pitch. Cummings swung on a ground ball to
- 47:56the right side. Second baseman Hauser has it.
- 47:58The throw to first is good in time. Casanova
- 48:01goes out. The side return. And for five innings,
- 48:05Siebert has set them down without a base hit.
- 48:09No runs, no hits. One walk, one left. End of
- 48:12four and a half. It is Cleveland two and Washington
- 48:15nothing. St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia
- 48:22Phillies are tied two and two at the end of one.
- 48:25The Cards got two runs off wise, but the Phillies
- 48:29got them right back when Allen hit a home run
- 48:32with a mate aboard. It's Simmons pitching for
- 48:34the Cardinals. Atlanta leading Pittsburgh two
- 48:36to nothing end of one. Johnson for Atlanta, Veal
- 48:39for the Pirates. Chicago at Houston, not underway.
- 48:42Los Angeles at San Francisco, not underway. Ed
- 48:46Versu has just hit a three -run homer in the
- 48:48last half of the second inning for the New York
- 48:51Mets. And the Mets are leading the Reds at least
- 48:553 -0 at the end, or in the second inning. Maloney
- 48:58for Cincinnati, rustic for the Mets. No other
- 49:02action. Boston and Baltimore still no score.
- 49:05Baltimore batting in the last of the second.
- 49:08And the batter is Sonny Siebert. Ortega's first
- 49:10pitch is called a strike. Much to the dissatisfaction
- 49:15of the folks in the stands. We're trying to help
- 49:20the umpire Honachick a little. Bill Ortega delivers.
- 49:24There's a high hopper to the third baseman. A
- 49:26leap by Savarin. Down with it. The throw to first
- 49:29is in time. Siebert goes out and a good play
- 49:31by Savarin. The center to third baseman. 5 -3
- 49:36out. You know, we mentioned Pete Rickett a moment
- 49:46ago. He's now the new strikeout king of the American
- 49:49League at this stage of the game. He's worked
- 49:5299 and two -third innings, and he has 92 strikeouts.
- 49:55Moved ahead of Sam McDowell while McDowell was
- 49:58on the injured list. McDowell has worked only
- 50:0069 innings, 30 less. There's a drive to center
- 50:04field by Davalillo, and the center fielder's
- 50:07lock goes back and hauls it down. He was playing
- 50:11shallow. Made it look sensational as he had to
- 50:15go back and haul it down on a one -handed grab.
- 50:19But it was a routine fly ball. So they're two
- 50:23out. And the batter is Chico Simone. Single to
- 50:29drive and a run in the third inning. The Indians
- 50:31are leading two to nothing. The pitch is low
- 50:40and into the dirt. Ball one. Foul works after
- 50:51the game tonight. There's a line shot into left
- 50:55field. Base hit. Simone hits first as he makes
- 50:58the turn. He holds. Hitting in the number two
- 51:04spot. Seems to agree with Chico. That's his second
- 51:09hit. And the Indians fourth. It brings up Leon
- 51:13Wagner who had a big hit in the first inning
- 51:15for the Indians. His sixth home run of the year.
- 51:18His batting average. Is now 262. Takes the first
- 51:30pitch. Too low. Ball one. Number 27. Leon Wagner.
- 51:38The outfield shading wags around to right. Deep
- 51:42in all fields. Check to the runner. Ortega's
- 51:45pitch. High. Ball two. Ball two. No strikes.
- 51:51The Mets did get just three runs on Ed Brissou's
- 51:55three -run homer in the second inning off Maloney.
- 51:58So the Mets lead Cincinnati 3 -0 into two. The
- 52:03Dodgers and the Giants will have a head -on battle
- 52:05for first place out on the coast starting tonight.
- 52:15To a no count. Tall, 6 '4", 195 -pounder. Ortega
- 52:21is ready. Turns and goes to first with a throw.
- 52:24He figures with speed, which Simone possesses,
- 52:29Chico might go. There is a change -up too low.
- 52:34Ball three. Three and no count now. Tomorrow
- 52:38night, game time, six o 'clock. Second game in
- 52:41this series and Sunday afternoon, the finale.
- 52:45Preceded at 1 .30 by the old -timers game. Some
- 52:48of the great stars of the past, Indian stars
- 52:51and others of the majors, both American and National
- 52:54League stars will be here. The pitch is a strike.
- 52:58You got the change up over. Bell tie. Ball three
- 53:01and strike one. Wags will be looking and hoping,
- 53:11I'm sure, for a fastball, but he'll be looking
- 53:13this three and one over carefully. It's usually
- 53:17a pitcher's or batter's pitch. Foul back into
- 53:21the upper stands. It was a half -fast ball. Three
- 53:26and two. I'll never forget the time that the
- 53:39late... Lovable, beloved Chris Beaker tried to
- 53:43use that expression very rapidly. Could it describe
- 53:49a pitch that was not really all fast, it was
- 53:52just half. Three and two count on the batter.
- 53:56Two out, there he goes. The pitch swung on, popped
- 53:59up. Foul, third base side. Bob Savareen moves
- 54:04over under it and he has it. The side is retired.
- 54:09No runs, one hit. One left. End of five. The
- 54:13score, Washington nothing, Cleveland two. Now
- 54:17it's play ball in the first half of the sixth
- 54:19inning. The Lions score Cleveland two runs, four
- 54:22hits, no errors. Washington no runs, no hits,
- 54:24and one error. It was a youngster up in Canada
- 54:27who wrote the letter suggesting that when we
- 54:30give the score, we always, out of politeness,
- 54:33give the visiting team first, whether they are
- 54:37ahead. Or not. Though we'll try. Washington,
- 54:43nothing. Cleveland, two. As long as the Indians
- 54:48are on the plus side, it sounds good. Eddie Brinkman
- 54:53at bat. He'll lead it off for the Senators here
- 54:56in the sixth. His batting average currently is
- 54:58.208. He takes a strike. He struck out, swinging
- 55:10on a bad pitch his first time up. Sonny has now
- 55:17racked up four strikeouts. He has given up one
- 55:20base on balls. On deck is Ortega, then the top
- 55:24of the batting order. A strike hits the inside
- 55:27corner, just above the knees. More illustrious
- 55:32names of the past. Hal Trusky, one of the great
- 55:35first basemen. High trainer, Hall of Fame third
- 55:40baseman, the Pirates, Luke Appling. Returning
- 55:46Sunday for the old -timers game. Way outside,
- 55:50past the catcher and back to the screen. Ball
- 55:52one and strike two. Ought to be real fun to see
- 55:58those fellas along with others like Enos Country
- 56:01Slaughter, Johnny Vandermeer. Double no hit.
- 56:10Vic Rasche, Sancho Page, Johnny Mize, Joe Ducky
- 56:14Wucky Medwick, Ed Lopat, Bob Lemon, Joe Gordon,
- 56:18Joe Sewell. One and two pitch. Swing and a miss.
- 56:23He struck him out. While Lee Stang has been lifted
- 56:33in the game in Baltimore, Dick Stigman is now
- 56:36pitching for Boston in the second inning. Wouldn't
- 56:41it be awful if the sting of Lee Stang doesn't
- 56:48hold in a Boston uniform? The jinx he holds over
- 56:53Baltimore. Bill Ortega at bat and he gets a strike.
- 56:56Fastball at the knees. Cut the corner. One out
- 57:06and nobody on. There's a ground ball to the first
- 57:10base side. Whitfield backs up, takes, throws
- 57:13high to the pitcher covering, but see that it's
- 57:15tall. He leaps and brings it down. That's strange.
- 57:22There was Whitfield giving us an example of what
- 57:25he described once on one of the interviews as
- 57:28a bad first baseman's throw to a pitcher. Underhand
- 57:32easy toss. He says you work on these things in
- 57:36spring training, you become accustomed to a...
- 57:38Sort of a firm toss. He almost tossed it over
- 57:43Sonny's head. So they're two out, and here's
- 57:46Blazingame. Getting this pesky little rascal
- 57:51out twice has been a part of Sonny's fine pitching.
- 57:59Because Blazingame is tough to get out, even
- 58:01though his average isn't very high. Swings and
- 58:04hits the line. Drive. Foul. Third base side.
- 58:07See what I mean? He pokes that bat all over the
- 58:09place. The outfield straightaway. Calavito is
- 58:24deep and right. See if it's pitch. High and inside
- 58:27with a changeup. Ball one and strike one. On
- 58:32a check on the balls and strikes. That's Jumont
- 58:34at first. Over at third is Kenneman. New decker.
- 58:40Back of second. Two out. The pitch is a strike.
- 58:46Work the outside corner. On deck is Bob Savareen.
- 58:54We're in the sixth here at the stadium. We hope
- 58:58you are here in the stadium tomorrow night with
- 58:59us on Sunday afternoon. The pitch swung on the
- 59:03ground ball to the left side. It's going to be
- 59:04a tough one. Chico Simone has it long for the
- 59:07first in time. He got him. Fine play. Chico Simone
- 59:12coming head on with a dribbler. Got the speedy
- 59:17blazing game. On a close one. 6 -3 out. 3 up
- 59:20and 3 down. And 19 men are all that Sonny has
- 59:26faced in six innings. Given up just one walk.
- 59:29No runs, no hits. Into five and a half. It is
- 59:32Washington nothing, Cleveland two. Now we move
- 59:40into the last half of the sixth inning. Two runs
- 59:43on four hits for the Indians. Nothing across
- 59:46the board for the Senators except one error.
- 59:50And the man left the board. Max Alves will lead
- 59:54it off. Number 10, the Indians third baseman
- 59:56batting 246. Baltimore came up with four runs
- 1:00:01in the second inning. Chase Lee Stang and they
- 1:00:04lead Boston four to nothing at the end of two.
- 1:00:09All right, Phil Ortega. Washington right hander
- 1:00:13pitches. Alvarez swings, but he misses. Strike
- 1:00:15one. Sure good to see all of the teachers from
- 1:00:23our great state here at tonight's ballgame. Guest
- 1:00:28of the management. Phil. Phil Ortega is ready.
- 1:00:36He rocked twice. Pitch is low and into the dirt.
- 1:00:40Ball one and strike one. Reggie Arturo coaching
- 1:00:42at first base. George Strickland is coaching
- 1:00:45at third. Batter on deck. Brad Whitfield. Here's
- 1:00:59the pitch. Foul back. Out of play. Up the stands.
- 1:01:03Be ready. Boom. Ball one and strike two. Boy,
- 1:01:10the sky is absolutely clear and beautiful. All
- 1:01:14the storm seems to have blown out. And the one
- 1:01:18and two pitch coming at Alvis. Almost hit him.
- 1:01:21Ball two inside. Changeup, but he didn't get
- 1:01:25it over. Ball two and strike two. Ortega shakes
- 1:01:44off a sign. Delivers. It's swung on. Popped up.
- 1:01:50The pitcher is calling for it. They're going
- 1:01:53to let him have it. And he makes the catch. Easy
- 1:01:56pop -up and Ortega, rather than wait for his
- 1:02:01third baseman to get into position, figured he
- 1:02:03would take it himself and did successfully. One
- 1:02:06out. And the batter is Fred Whitfield. Wingy
- 1:02:17has struck out and fried to center. Left -hand
- 1:02:23batter. Takes a strike. Fastball at the knees.
- 1:02:28Ortega's been spotting his pitches very well.
- 1:02:32Washington can be proud of this boy, Phil Ortega,
- 1:02:35and the left -hander, Pete Rickett, that they
- 1:02:38got from the Dodgers. Swing and a miss as Wingy
- 1:02:40went chasing on that changeup. Rickett has won
- 1:02:52six. Nortega has won five. So they have won 11
- 1:02:58games between them. Ball went outside and a bit
- 1:03:04high. Ball one and strike two. Sam McDowell continues
- 1:03:13to take treatment for his sore arm. It's muscular
- 1:03:18soreness. Pitch is swung on a line drive into
- 1:03:22right field. Base hit. Holding it first on the
- 1:03:26throw to the infield. And Rocky Calavito comes
- 1:03:32to bat. That's hit number five for the Indians.
- 1:03:36Whitfield's first. It's two minutes to nine.
- 1:03:52Just on Whitfield's base hit. And Calavito stands
- 1:03:58in. He swings. It's a fly ball to left field.
- 1:04:01Too high. The left fielder Howard moving in under
- 1:04:04it. And he makes the catch. They're two gone.
- 1:04:12Well, things have been pretty quiet out there
- 1:04:15in left field for the big fella. That's his first
- 1:04:19chance. He was in on the pop -up by Wagner. He
- 1:04:26was in the vicinity. But the ball was handled
- 1:04:29by Brinkman, the shortstop who drew the error.
- 1:04:33And now, a little meeting out there on the mound.
- 1:04:37The catcher, Casanova, out to talk with Ortega.
- 1:04:51Indians are leading Washington by a score of
- 1:04:53two to nothing. There are two out and we're in
- 1:04:57the last of the six. Hauser at bat, he looks
- 1:05:00at a strike. Hauser turning up okay off the injured
- 1:05:05list and back into the lineup. Larry Brown continues
- 1:05:10to improve. Here's the pitch. Outside, the ball
- 1:05:18got away from the catcher, but Whitfield is holding.
- 1:05:21Nice recovery. Time is called. Count is one and
- 1:05:24one. We also have some Cub Scouts here tonight.
- 1:05:47Along with their parents, Cub Scouts, 452. All
- 1:05:53right, back in play. Hauser stands in. The 0
- 1:05:55-1 pitch coming at him. And it is inside and
- 1:05:58low. A 1 -1 pitch. It's now ball two and strike
- 1:06:02one. Askew on deck. A look to the runner by Otega.
- 1:06:19He goes to first baseman Nen with a throw. But
- 1:06:23he must not be worried too much about Whitfield.
- 1:06:29All the winger did steal a base in the Yankee
- 1:06:31series. There's a swing and a miss. Track two
- 1:06:35on Hauser. The little colonel is trying to go
- 1:06:43to right field for one. But he failed to connect.
- 1:06:47It's now ball two and strike two. Last half of
- 1:06:50the sixth inning, the Indians lead two to nothing.
- 1:06:52There have been only five hits in this ballgame.
- 1:06:55The Indians have them all. Senators have had
- 1:06:59only one base runner. Dick Ninn, the first baseman,
- 1:07:02drew a walk. The pitch. A strike at the outside
- 1:07:06corner with a slider. And Hauser is called on
- 1:07:08strikes. The side is retired. In the sixth for
- 1:07:12the Indians. No runs. Markup a hit. One is left.
- 1:07:16And at the end of six, the score is Washington
- 1:07:19nothing, Cleveland two. Now we go to the top
- 1:07:22of the seventh inning. The Indians leading in
- 1:07:24the line score. The Indians two runs on five
- 1:07:26hits and no errors. Sonny Siebert has allowed
- 1:07:29only one member of the Washington Senators to
- 1:07:31reach first base. And the Washington Senators
- 1:07:34have committed one error. So Siebert now, having
- 1:07:38passed two -thirds of the mile post, tries to
- 1:07:42go through these next three innings. Trying to
- 1:07:45get the Washington Sounders out of there. Sonny's
- 1:07:48pitching very effectively tonight. His fastball
- 1:07:50moving well. His curveball breaking well. The
- 1:07:55end of two and a half innings. Baltimore four,
- 1:07:57Boston nothing. We'll be getting underway in
- 1:08:00just a moment. Fountain against the Gary. Minnesota
- 1:08:03against Chicago. Boswell against Buzz Hart. First
- 1:08:08batter to face Sonny Siebert in the seventh will
- 1:08:11be Bob Savarene. Left -hand batter batting .206.
- 1:08:19The outfield shaded to the right. First pitch
- 1:08:22on the way. Fastball a little too high outside.
- 1:08:24Ball one. Real fine crowd on hand. Now the one
- 1:08:39-ball delivery by Sonny. A strike is in there.
- 1:08:42That ball really broke. Sabrine pulled away and
- 1:08:44the ball caught the inside corner. One and one.
- 1:08:47Tomorrow night at 6 o 'clock, the Indians and
- 1:08:50the Senators will go again. And on Sunday at
- 1:08:531 .30, the old -timers game. 2 .30, the Indians
- 1:08:56and the Senators. 1 -1 pitch. Fastball outside,
- 1:09:02two balls and a strike. A breeze really blowing
- 1:09:10across. And it's coming out of the northwest
- 1:09:14now, blowing across from left to right field.
- 1:09:18High and inside. Ball three. Three and one. Three
- 1:09:34and one as Sonny Siebert checks with Joe Askew.
- 1:09:37And the pitch. Strike is in there, 3 -2. Those
- 1:09:46of you who sent letters in when we were broadcasting
- 1:09:49from California in the Big 17 inning game, the
- 1:09:54most distant point from which we received a letter
- 1:09:57was Brooklyn, New York. 3 -2 pitch. There's a
- 1:10:01foul away. A gentleman in Brooklyn asked if he
- 1:10:06could have his tickets for when the Indians play
- 1:10:08in New York. And the Cleveland Ball Club's going
- 1:10:11to come through. We were amazed at the number
- 1:10:20of people who apparently stayed up all night
- 1:10:22to listen to that game. Now the 3 -2 pitch. Line
- 1:10:25shot to Whitfield. Line drive into Fred Whitfield's
- 1:10:31glove. One out on the seventh, and let's pause.
- 1:10:34Ten seconds for station identification. This
- 1:10:36is the Cleveland Indians baseball network. This
- 1:10:45is Bob Neal with Jimmy Dudley and our engineer,
- 1:10:48Dick Satterwhite. Jim King, the right fielder,
- 1:10:50stands in. He's bounced out second to first,
- 1:10:52a fly ball to left. Siebert's pitch. He fouls
- 1:10:55it off. It's drifting back into the seats. It's
- 1:10:57out of play, and it's strike one. Next pitch.
- 1:11:08Change -up curve. Drops a little low, and it's
- 1:11:101 -1. One ball, one strike, one out. Jim King
- 1:11:19batting .273 in the outfield, playing him just
- 1:11:22a little to the right. Right side of the infield,
- 1:11:24well back. Hauser at second base, Whitfield at
- 1:11:26first. Now the 1 -1 pitch. Ground ball, pull
- 1:11:29foul. Joe Pignatano gave it the look. It rolls
- 1:11:32along. The fellow down there fell out of the
- 1:11:36box seats and reaching for that one. And he flips
- 1:11:44it in the air. He's got himself a souvenir. Now
- 1:11:53Siebert's one -two pitch. Foul back on the screen.
- 1:11:57It's still one ball and two strikes. Baltimore
- 1:12:02did not score in their half of the third. So
- 1:12:04it's Baltimore for Boston nothing. In the Yankee
- 1:12:11Detroit game it's Jim Bowden going for New York.
- 1:12:13Hank and Gary for the Tigers. Now the pitch.
- 1:12:21Struck him out on a curveball. Oh Sonny Siebert
- 1:12:25picks up another strikeout. That gives him three
- 1:12:28four five six strikeouts so far. Two out in the
- 1:12:31seventh inning. To the big fella Frank Howard.
- 1:12:48Struck out in the second hit a fly ball to center
- 1:12:50in the fifth. Sonny Siebert working to the big
- 1:12:55fella takes a curve ball. It's a little on outside
- 1:12:58ball one. Talk about ballplayers referred to
- 1:13:06as big fellas. This has to be the daddy of them
- 1:13:09all. Man he is powering. Sonny Siebert's one
- 1:13:13ball delivery. Swings and he fouls it off and
- 1:13:15it's one and one. Joe Askew wearing his helmet
- 1:13:23tonight. Real good idea for catchers to be wearing
- 1:13:30these babies, especially with those bats being
- 1:13:33whipped around. 1 -1 delivery. Swing and a miss
- 1:13:38and it's strike two. Now one ball, two strikes.
- 1:13:52Two out, nobody on. Outfield sliced around to
- 1:13:55the left. Siebert's one -two pitch, a side -armer
- 1:13:57that just missed. Boy, he gave that a big try.
- 1:14:01Sort of a crossfire as well. He stepped almost
- 1:14:03to the edge of the grass from the mound. Now
- 1:14:10it's two balls, two strikes. Two down, Indians
- 1:14:13leading 2 -0. Seventh inning. And the 2 -2. He
- 1:14:19tries it again, and he missed this time inside.
- 1:14:213 -2. Trying to get him to back out of there.
- 1:14:25Frank Howard stood right in there. Don't forget,
- 1:14:31tomorrow night, 6 o 'clock, Sunday, the old -timers
- 1:14:34game starts at 1 .30. Two down. The payoff pitch
- 1:14:39by Sonny Siebert. There's a little high pop foul.
- 1:14:42Back of the plate. Askew waving everybody away.
- 1:14:45Comes over. He's got it. And so, Sonny Siebert,
- 1:14:53who retired the first 13 men to face him, gave
- 1:14:56up a walk to Dick Nann, and since that time has
- 1:14:59retired eight of the Senators in a row, continues
- 1:15:02to try and reach that you -know -what. No runs,
- 1:15:06no hits, no errors, and none left. So in the
- 1:15:09middle of the seventh inning, the Indians 2 and
- 1:15:11the Washington Senators nothing. Now we go to
- 1:15:14the bottom of the seventh inning. Jack Kenton
- 1:15:16running out to the bullpen I think is going to
- 1:15:18loosen up. Sonny Siebert has pitched himself
- 1:15:23a masterful game so far. Only two members of
- 1:15:26the Senators have hit a fly ball. And the rest
- 1:15:30have been ground balls with the exception of
- 1:15:32the base on balls of the six strikeouts. Only
- 1:15:35one man for the Washington Senators has gotten
- 1:15:37on base. That was Dick Nen who walked back in
- 1:15:40the fifth inning. So Sonny Siebert has gone a
- 1:15:44long way, seven innings so far. And Joe Askew
- 1:15:49comes up there now. He's popped out to the first
- 1:15:51baseman, popped to the second baseman. Phil Ortega,
- 1:15:54the right -hander, who's pitched well, he's allowed
- 1:15:56only five hits. Fires down to the Indian catcher.
- 1:15:59Curveball, he slaps it out in the right center
- 1:16:01field. Fly ball and down lock. The center fielder
- 1:16:04is under it and takes it for our number one.
- 1:16:07Ortega changed up on that curveball. Let Askew
- 1:16:11hit it and let him supply all the power. One
- 1:16:15out of the seventh and listen to the hand Sonny
- 1:16:17Siebert's getting. Sonny Siebert standing in.
- 1:16:31Sonny has fouled out and bounced out. First pitch
- 1:16:34to him. Swings and he fouls it off upstairs.
- 1:16:37Strike one. Yes, sir, the tension begins to grow.
- 1:16:43Listening to Dale Mitchell talking on the pregame
- 1:16:47program today. I remember that game that Don
- 1:16:50Larson pitched in the World Series because I
- 1:16:51broadcast it. Curve is inside. It's one and one.
- 1:17:01One ball and one strike. And the pitch. Too high
- 1:17:07and it bounces out of the catcher's mid. Two
- 1:17:10balls, one strike. We're in the bottom of the
- 1:17:20seventh. The Indians leading 2 -0. Now the 2
- 1:17:26-1 pitch. Fouled again, sliced off into the upper
- 1:17:30deck. Now it's 2 and 2. You know Larry Brown
- 1:17:34may accompany the team on their trip. I don't
- 1:17:37mean by that that he's ready to play because
- 1:17:40he sure isn't. But he's working out. He's still
- 1:17:44a little weak. And you can understand that. But
- 1:17:50it'll give him a chance to work out with the
- 1:17:52team if they decide to take him along. Now the
- 1:17:572 -2 pitch. Strike him out. He gave him the fastball
- 1:18:00and outside and Sonny took a cut at it. So Phil
- 1:18:03Ortega has made his third strikeout. And now
- 1:18:12Vic D 'Amelio, the Indian center fielder in tonight's
- 1:18:15game. He's hit a fly ball to right field. He
- 1:18:17walked in the third, stole second and came home
- 1:18:19on Chico Simone's single. Indians got their other
- 1:18:22run in the first inning with two out and Wags
- 1:18:24hit his sixth home run of the year. We're going
- 1:18:28to move the outfield around a little for Vic.
- 1:18:31Don Locke has moved in shallow and left center.
- 1:18:33Frank Howard shallow and left. And Jim King is
- 1:18:38a little in right center. Takes a change up on
- 1:18:42the outside corner for a strike. Chuck Hinton
- 1:18:48throwing an Indian bullpen. As the tension continues
- 1:18:57to mount. Wind up and the pitch on the way. Down
- 1:19:03low and it's one and one. Two out, one and one.
- 1:19:21Here's Ortega's next delivery. And it's a strike
- 1:19:24on the outside corner of the fastball one and
- 1:19:26two that fastball really moved Sam McDowell will
- 1:19:32probably pitch tomorrow night's game Now Davalio
- 1:19:44steps out to pick up a little dirt And Ortega
- 1:19:53getting set again. Checks with Casanova's catcher.
- 1:19:58Two out, nobody on. Indians two, Washington nothing
- 1:20:01in the pitch. He struck him out. I believe had
- 1:20:04a good cut. And he becomes strikeout victim number
- 1:20:06four against the right -hander for the Senators.
- 1:20:09In the seventh inning for the Indians, nothing
- 1:20:12across. And at the end of seven full innings
- 1:20:14of play, the Cleveland Indians two, the Washington
- 1:20:16Senators nothing. Now it's the time of the eighth
- 1:20:20inning, and for Washington, we'll have Dick Nen,
- 1:20:23the first baseman, Don Locke, the center fielder,
- 1:20:27and Paul Casanova, the catcher. Sonny Siebert
- 1:20:35getting set to work. Has registered six strikeouts
- 1:20:40in his seven innings he's worked so far. And
- 1:20:46the only senator who has reached base, Dick Nen,
- 1:20:49will be the first man to face him in the fifth
- 1:20:51inning. Last time Washington was in here, Dick
- 1:20:54Nen really started to hit that ball. He'd had
- 1:20:56a report prior to that in his previous year's
- 1:20:58work that he was a late starter. And there were
- 1:21:01a lot of Herculean efforts in that game. You
- 1:21:04remember the great catch by Locke with his arm
- 1:21:07hanging over that right center field fence. Norm
- 1:21:10Cash and Jake Wood have each homered in the first
- 1:21:13inning. And so the Tigers lead at least by a
- 1:21:162 -0 score over the Yankees with the Tigers batting
- 1:21:20in the last of the first inning. Here's Dick
- 1:21:22Nann, left -hand batter. Sonny Siebert firing
- 1:21:25to him and he takes up high. Ball one. Boston
- 1:21:31failed to score in their half of the fourth.
- 1:21:32Baltimore still leads in 4 -0. Joe has Q down
- 1:21:41with a sign. Op field is straight away and deep.
- 1:21:48There's a long drive to right field. It's curving
- 1:21:50and it's going to be fouled in the upper deck.
- 1:21:53That was... Big Belt had the distance. Indians
- 1:22:07still have wags in left field. Diabolo on center.
- 1:22:11Calavito on right. Alves at third, Simone at
- 1:22:15short, Hauser at second base, Whitfield at first.
- 1:22:18Now the 1 -1 pitch to Nen. Takes a fast ball
- 1:22:22just a shade inside and high. Ball two, strike
- 1:22:24one. Minnesota failed to score in their half
- 1:22:29of the first inning. Chicago now batting. Boswell
- 1:22:32against Buzz Hart. Kansas City will be at California
- 1:22:36tonight. Ground ball right side. Hauser moving
- 1:22:44over. Grabs it. Throws to Whitfield. He's got
- 1:22:46it. And there's one away in the eighth inning.
- 1:22:54One down and the batter now is Don Locke. Right
- 1:22:58hand batting center fielder. He popped out to
- 1:23:00the third baseman in the second. Struck out in
- 1:23:02the fifth. New York Mets leading Cincinnati four
- 1:23:07to nothing at the end of five. Atlanta now leading
- 1:23:10Pittsburgh 3 -0 at the end of three and a half.
- 1:23:13Sonny Siebert's first pitch to lock. Strike with
- 1:23:16a curveball cut the outside corner. One strike,
- 1:23:26one out, nobody on. The Indians lead 2 -0. Here's
- 1:23:30the pitch by Siebert. Curveball right in the
- 1:23:32backfield. out of the second baseman. Sonny Siebert
- 1:24:02ready to work and the pitch coming. He takes
- 1:24:05a strike. Ron Klein is now starting to throw
- 1:24:12in the Washington bullpen. Here's Siebert with
- 1:24:20a one strike pitch. Curveball, a ground ball,
- 1:24:23Simone charging in, up with the ball, fires to
- 1:24:25first. Low throw, followed by Whitfield. Throw
- 1:24:30is in the dirt. And it's an error, charged to
- 1:24:35Chico Simone. That is only the second member
- 1:24:39of the Washington Senators to get on base. And
- 1:24:42then walked back in the fifth. Casanova gets
- 1:24:44on on the error. So now the Washington Senators
- 1:24:49with a runner on first. And Eddie Brinkman, the
- 1:24:51shortstop, is due up there. And it looks like
- 1:24:54Bob Chance is going to come up and swing for
- 1:24:57him. Chico's throw was in the dirt. And Wingney
- 1:25:02could not handle it as it bounced back up. An
- 1:25:06error charged on Chico Simone. So we have a runner
- 1:25:12now for Washington on first base. Each team has
- 1:25:15been charged with an error. Bob Chance coming
- 1:25:18up there. Baby Huey of a few years ago with the
- 1:25:25Indians. Now swinging for the Washington centers.
- 1:25:29208 batting average. He's had one home run. He's
- 1:25:31had three doubles. Sonny Siebert facing this
- 1:25:36tough left -hand batter. Checks the runner at
- 1:25:38first and comes down with a pitch. A foul bounces
- 1:25:41back off the screen. One strike as Siebert jammed
- 1:25:46him with a fastball. He got it up on the handle.
- 1:25:53Casanova jumps off to a short lead at first.
- 1:25:56Whitfield playing back to the runner with Chance,
- 1:25:58a left -hand batter up there. Sonny Siebert ready
- 1:26:00in the pitch. Foul back upstairs again. Strike
- 1:26:03two. That one rattling above. No balls, two strikes,
- 1:26:14two down. The runner at first base in the top
- 1:26:17of the eighth inning. Chance moving back in.
- 1:26:21waving that bat as Sonny Siebert comes to the
- 1:26:23bell with a stretch. And the pitch on the way.
- 1:26:26He's struck him out. Frankly, chance won and
- 1:26:32missed. He'll ask you to hang him as he's got
- 1:26:34the ball. In the eighth inning for Washington,
- 1:26:37no runs, no hits, one error, one left. And so
- 1:26:42Sonny Siebert has allowed only two members of
- 1:26:45the Washington Senators to reach base. A walk
- 1:26:47to Dick Nen in the fifth. and Casanova getting
- 1:26:50on in an error in the eighth inning. And so in
- 1:26:53the middle of the eighth, it's Cleveland two
- 1:26:55and Washington nothing. This is Bob Neal with
- 1:27:02Jimmy Dudley and engineer Dick Satterwhite. We're
- 1:27:04watching a great ball game here tonight. Phil
- 1:27:07Ortega comes out to pitch in the eighth inning.
- 1:27:10He's pitched well. He's given up only five hits,
- 1:27:13two runs, a home run by Wags in the first, and
- 1:27:15a run on a walk, a stolen base. And a single
- 1:27:18by Simone that scored D 'Avelio. But it's sunny
- 1:27:21Seabrook's night at the moment. With only two
- 1:27:24members of the centers getting on. A walk in
- 1:27:26the fifth inning to Nen. A life for Casanova
- 1:27:29on an error in the eighth. Now the Indians try
- 1:27:32to add some to their two -nothing lead. As Chico
- 1:27:34Simone takes a swing and hits a foul. Back into
- 1:27:37the seats. And it's strike one. And more of this
- 1:27:44action coming your way tomorrow night at 6 o
- 1:27:46'clock and again on Sunday. You'll have a chance
- 1:27:49to relive some of the historic moments of the
- 1:27:52past on Sunday in the old -timers game starting
- 1:27:54at 1 .30. Now the one -strike pitch is way outside.
- 1:27:58It's one -on -one. One ball, one strike. Ortega
- 1:28:04getting set, looking into his catcher, Paul Casanova.
- 1:28:08Ed McMullen is now playing third base and Sabarin
- 1:28:11has moved to shortstop. Foul as Chico checked
- 1:28:14his swing, and it's now two balls and a strike.
- 1:28:19Chico so far tonight has popped out of the shortstop,
- 1:28:22singled in the third, and singled again in the
- 1:28:24fifth. He's got one RBI, wags with his home run
- 1:28:26as the other. Raddatz and Bob Allen still throwing
- 1:28:30in the bullpen. Landis and Hinton are throwing
- 1:28:32in the Indian bullpen. Cleveland Indians baseball
- 1:28:39right here in the stadium. Outfield shaded a
- 1:28:44little to the left. Ready to go is Ortega in
- 1:28:50the one -two pitch. Way outside with a curve.
- 1:28:55Two balls, two strikes. Now the two -two pitch.
- 1:29:02And it's a strike called. Nice ball that caught
- 1:29:04the inside corner on Chico Simone. Simone called
- 1:29:07out on strikes here in the eighth. That's the
- 1:29:11fifth strikeout. For Phil Ortega. Ortega's been
- 1:29:17a little tough. In the second inning, he retired
- 1:29:21the side in order. Again in the fourth in order.
- 1:29:24In the seventh in order. Now he takes a look
- 1:29:27at Leon Wagner. Wags hammered a home run in the
- 1:29:30first inning. Safe on an error in the third.
- 1:29:32Fouled out in the fifth inning. Fouls it off
- 1:29:34the screen. It's strike one. We've got the young
- 1:29:40adults group from St. Paul's in Euclid. And everybody
- 1:29:46watching this game tonight sitting on the edge
- 1:29:49of their seats as they look ahead to the top
- 1:29:51of the ninth inning. Cleveland two and Washington
- 1:29:54nothing. Now the delivery. Ground ball right
- 1:29:57side. Grabbed by Nen. Races to the bag ahead
- 1:29:59of Wagner. Two down as Dick Nen takes that hard
- 1:30:03smash. Steps on the bag and Wagner bounces out
- 1:30:06to the first baseman. Two out in the eighth inning.
- 1:30:09Max Alves will be the batter. The Indians, two
- 1:30:15runs. Holding up at the moment. Trying to get
- 1:30:20some more. Max Alves so far tonight. Beat out
- 1:30:23a bunt in the first inning. Walked in the third
- 1:30:25and popped out in the sixth. The pop out was
- 1:30:27taken by the pitcher. Curveball, he nubs it off
- 1:30:30to the right side. Ortega racing over. Throws
- 1:30:33to first and he's got him. And the side is retired.
- 1:30:35So at the end of eight. thrilling innings. The
- 1:30:38score, the Indians 2, the Washington Senators
- 1:30:41nothing. Now, fans, we move into the first half
- 1:30:45of the ninth inning with the Indians leading
- 1:30:47by a score of 2 -0. A couple of changes in the
- 1:30:51outfield. Hinton replaces Wagner in left field,
- 1:30:55and Landis replaces Calavito in right. We're
- 1:31:01going to have a pinch batter coming up to bat
- 1:31:03for the pitcher, Ortega. will be number 34, Fred
- 1:31:07Valentine. Valentine batting for Ortega. He is
- 1:31:19the regular center fielder for Washington. But
- 1:31:24he came up with a sprained wrist in batting practice
- 1:31:28tonight, but he's coming up as a pinch hitter.
- 1:31:35Hinton will bat in Calavito's spot. Landis will
- 1:31:41bat in the number three spot. Siebert's first
- 1:31:43pitch. Swing and a foul tip in the dirt. There'll
- 1:31:46be a cheer on every pitch. That's for sure. Sonny
- 1:31:52Siebert into the windup. The pitch is a strike.
- 1:31:56A blazing fastball is right in there. Belt high.
- 1:31:58Strike two. Batter on deck is Don Blassingame.
- 1:32:07The outfield just about straight away. Valentine
- 1:32:09has a batting average of .284. Sievert into the
- 1:32:14windup. The pitch. Check swing. Too high. Ball
- 1:32:18one. He started his swing, but managed to stop
- 1:32:22it. We see that he has his wrist taped up, so
- 1:32:27he must have wrenched it enough for it to be
- 1:32:31painful. And, of course, it kept him out of the
- 1:32:33starting lineup. Ball one and strike two. Siebert
- 1:32:42gave up a walk in the fifth inning. And the runner
- 1:32:44was safe on an error with two out on the eighth.
- 1:32:46The pitch swung on. A line foul past third base.
- 1:32:51Ball one and strike two. They've hit some shots.
- 1:32:55Lockett a line drive to the third baseman, Max
- 1:32:58Alvis, who went high into the air. That was in
- 1:33:00the eighth inning. In the seventh inning, Savarene
- 1:33:04lined to the first baseman, Whitfield. Sonny
- 1:33:07Siebert juggling that ball a little bit out there
- 1:33:10in his glove. Now looks in for the sign. The
- 1:33:15batter is Fred Valentine, number 34, pensioning
- 1:33:17for the pitcher. Batting for Phil Ortega. The
- 1:33:20count is ball one and strike two. Here's the
- 1:33:23pitch. Outside. Ball two. The fans groan. Tension,
- 1:33:31excitement, enthusiasm riding on every pitch.
- 1:33:38You can just sort of feel it as it ripples through
- 1:33:40this crowd. The pitch at changeup is too high.
- 1:33:44Ball three, three and two. Full count on the
- 1:33:47batter. And these fans, thousands and thousands
- 1:33:55of them, along with the teachers, move to the
- 1:33:59front of their seats. The pitch is swung to the
- 1:34:01ground, ball to the right side of the infield.
- 1:34:02There's Hauser. He has it. The throw to first
- 1:34:04is in time. That was a 4 -3 play. Two outs away.
- 1:34:33Maybe six pitches away from history in the making.
- 1:34:39The Indians lead 2 -0. But the scores of right
- 1:34:43now is a little bit on the secondary side. It's
- 1:34:47a tremendous performance by one individual. Poised
- 1:34:50on the mound. The pitch is too high. Ball one.
- 1:34:55The outfield shading just maybe a step toward
- 1:34:58right. Alvis smoothing out the dirt a little
- 1:35:01bit nervously as he does so. At third base. Inside
- 1:35:06the bag. This guy can poke him to all fields.
- 1:35:09The 1 -0 pitch. Ground ball. Third base side.
- 1:35:12It kicks foul. Rolls to the coach. Alvis would
- 1:35:15much rather have had it. Ball one and strike
- 1:35:19one. The batter on deck is Bob Savareen. Tomorrow
- 1:35:27night, the Indians and the Senators again, six
- 1:35:29o 'clock, and Sunday, the old -timers game, along
- 1:35:32with a regularly scheduled game between the Indians
- 1:35:35and the Senators. Seep it in action. The pitch
- 1:35:38is ball two, high and inside. Ball two and strike
- 1:35:41one. Sonny Siebert, University of Missouri. The
- 1:35:47tall right -hander. Second -best earned run average
- 1:35:51in the American League last year. Second only
- 1:35:54to that of the Indians' lefty, Sam McDowell.
- 1:35:56And the 2 -1 pitch. Long foul off to the right.
- 1:35:59It'll be out of play. And there's one for the
- 1:36:02nervous fans to juggle. Oh, they do. Down below
- 1:36:04it goes. Don't be nervous, Sam. Some of Duke
- 1:36:17Simms' fans were flying by in an airplane tonight
- 1:36:20and they had a banner talking about the Duke.
- 1:36:26Two -and -two pitch coming up. Swung on the ground
- 1:36:28ball to the right side of the infield. Whitfield
- 1:36:29is going to make the play. Tosses to the pitcher
- 1:36:31coming. The runner is out. Only one to go. Whitfield.
- 1:36:40To the pitcher, Sonny C. And the heart beats
- 1:36:53faster. As the excitement mounts and mounts and
- 1:36:59mounts. The fans now are almost on their feet
- 1:37:04as Bob Sabourin stands in. Left hand batter.
- 1:37:07The pitch is ball one outside and over the blazing
- 1:37:10fastball. The outfield straight away. Fred Whitfield
- 1:37:18has moved on a step or two now. Closer to first
- 1:37:21base. Left hand batter up. Second baseman Hauser.
- 1:37:25Step it to and on the skin part of the infield.
- 1:37:27Alvis moves in. Here's the pitch. Swung on a
- 1:37:31high pop foul. Back and out of play. Ball one,
- 1:37:37strike one. Only two Senators have reached in
- 1:37:41this explosive, exciting ball game. Dick Nann
- 1:37:47drew a walk in the fifth inning. He was the first
- 1:37:49runner to get on. The first in 14 battles. With
- 1:37:53two out, Casanova was safe on an error in the
- 1:37:56eighth. And here's the one -and -one pitch. Swung
- 1:37:58on, fouled back into the upper stands. Maybe
- 1:38:01just one pitch away. Ball one and strike two.
- 1:38:10As Sonny Siebert reaches for greatness. He's
- 1:38:17walked hand -in -hand with it tonight. Now with
- 1:38:22two out. The one and two pitch. Coming up. And
- 1:38:25it is inside, says the umpire. He almost started
- 1:38:32his swing. And the fans were almost out on the
- 1:38:35field. Bertie Tebbett's hat did come out on the
- 1:38:40field. The cameramen are hedging closer. Here
- 1:38:50we go. The count is two and two. Two out. The
- 1:38:53pitch coming up. Swung on. A foul ball to left
- 1:38:55field. There goes Hinton. He's under it. He has
- 1:38:58it! The game is over. Sonny Siebert has pitched
- 1:39:04a no -hitter. It is the first one since 1951
- 1:39:09when Bob Pella defeated the Detroit Tigers 2
- 1:39:13-1. Listen to the roar of the crowd. on tonight's
- 1:39:31brilliant performance by Sonny Siebert in just
- 1:39:34one moment. This is a night of excitement. This
- 1:40:56is Sonny Siebert's night, as he has pitched the
- 1:41:00first no -hit ball game for the Cleveland Indians
- 1:41:03since 1951. It was on July 1st of 1951 that Bob
- 1:41:09Feller defeated the Detroit Tigers, pitching
- 1:41:12a no -hitter, and gave the Indians their 11th
- 1:41:15no -hitter in history. This is number 12, and
- 1:41:18Sonny Siebert. joins a long list of illustrious
- 1:41:21pitches in the history of the Cleveland Baseball
- 1:41:23Club. The Indians win it by a score of two to
- 1:41:26nothing. The Lions score, boy, you think we're
- 1:41:31not nervous. Everybody was nervous. For Cleveland,
- 1:41:35it was two runs, five hits, one error, and five
- 1:41:38left. And for the Senators, no runs, no hits.
- 1:41:42That part's easy. There was one error for the
- 1:41:46Senators. and they had two men left on the bases.
- 1:41:49Siebert walked only one batter, struck out seven,
- 1:41:52and only two Senators reached base. Dick Ninn,
- 1:41:57the 14th batter, in the fifth inning walked,
- 1:42:00and in the eighth inning with two out, Casanova
- 1:42:02was safe on an error. A brilliant performance,
- 1:42:05and Sonny Siebert joins a great list of illustrious
- 1:42:09pitchers who have been in the record book as
- 1:42:13pitching no -hit ballgames. Once more, the final
- 1:42:17score. Sonny Siebert pitching a no -hitter. Cleveland
- 1:42:222 and Washington nothing. Sonny Siebert was certainly
- 1:42:36a lot of pitcher tonight. You've got to be lucky,
- 1:42:38Bob. I was lucky tonight. Cut the breaks. Well,
- 1:42:40you were also very effective. There were only
- 1:42:43two balls really that were hit hard. The one
- 1:42:45shot that was hit to Max Alves and the other
- 1:42:47was hit to Whitfield. Well, you know, it'd be
- 1:42:49a hit too hard to drop in there, though. I mean,
- 1:42:50a lot of times you jam somebody and it'll break
- 1:42:52your back and it'll fall in there. I mean, you've
- 1:42:56got to be lucky. I just think I'm the luckiest
- 1:42:57guy in the world right now. Well, you're also
- 1:43:00a great pitcher, and we're certainly happy to
- 1:43:03congratulate you, Sonny. Things have been going
- 1:43:05a little rough for you this year. You took kind
- 1:43:07of a rough beating from California. Things were
- 1:43:10a little rough in Minnesota. But, boy, tonight
- 1:43:12you really came back with a job. Yeah, Bob, I've
- 1:43:15been having a rough time. I think I know what
- 1:43:17was wrong. I think I corrected it. And I hope
- 1:43:19the rest of the season, I hope I'm just as effective
- 1:43:22as I can be and help the ball club more. Sonny,
- 1:43:26I know that every pitcher, when he's out there
- 1:43:28in a ballgame, perhaps doesn't think about it
- 1:43:30realistically until it develops. But somewhere
- 1:43:33along the way, he begins to think of a no -hitter.
- 1:43:35When during the course of tonight's ballgame
- 1:43:37did you think you might have a chance at one?
- 1:43:39First inning, Bob. Before I left home tonight,
- 1:43:42my wife, she's been getting on me because I've
- 1:43:45been getting hit pretty hard. And I told her,
- 1:43:47I said, get off my back. I said, I'll pitch a
- 1:43:49no -hitter for you. Did you? I did. I was kidding.
- 1:43:53I come out here in the first three innings. I
- 1:43:55realized I had a no -hitter. I started thinking
- 1:43:57about what I said to my wife. And then from then
- 1:43:59on, I was afraid to look at the scoreboard. I
- 1:44:01just said, dog it all the way. Go out there and
- 1:44:04get hitter by hitter. And I just can't believe
- 1:44:07it. Is this the first one you ever pitched? Yes,
- 1:44:10it is, Bob. In your entire career? Yes. Now,
- 1:44:14as we know, as the game went along, and as you
- 1:44:17told your wife you're going to pitch a no -hitter,
- 1:44:19as it got into, say, the fourth or fifth inning,
- 1:44:22you were aware of the fact that you hadn't given
- 1:44:24up a hit. That's right, Bob. The game was so
- 1:44:27close that I didn't really worry about the no
- 1:44:31-hitter. I was worried about the win. I mean,
- 1:44:33I wasn't trying to... throw somebody a curveball
- 1:44:36on three and nothing or something like that.
- 1:44:38I was trying to get them out. I was trying to
- 1:44:39win the ballgame. And if I pitched a no -hitter,
- 1:44:42I was fine, but winning the ballgame was most
- 1:44:44important to me. Well, you not only won a ballgame,
- 1:44:46but you reached straight into baseball history.
- 1:44:49You know, the last no -hitter pitched, Sonny,
- 1:44:51I think in the major leagues, I think was pitched
- 1:44:54by Bob Feller back in 1951. And, boy, that's
- 1:44:58a long span of time in the American League especially,
- 1:45:00isn't it? Yes, I thought McDowell probably pitched
- 1:45:03one before now, but... He will. I'm just surprised
- 1:45:06I was lucky enough to do it. Now, how about on
- 1:45:09the bench? When you come in after pitching each
- 1:45:11inning, did you sit in the same spot every time?
- 1:45:14Yes, I did, Bob. I did most of the same thing
- 1:45:16the whole game. But I wasn't too superstitious.
- 1:45:21I mean, I was just trying to concentrate on getting
- 1:45:23the hitters out. That's all I can say. I mean,
- 1:45:27I really wasn't. Anybody from the fans from the
- 1:45:30stands holler no hitter to you? No, none of my
- 1:45:33teammates said anything. Even Joe the catcher
- 1:45:36didn't say anything. I wasn't sure I had no hitter.
- 1:45:40Nobody said anything, but they were clapping
- 1:45:42me. They were giving me quite a hand when I went
- 1:45:44to bat, so I figured something was going on.
- 1:45:47How many times, now when you normally look back,
- 1:45:50you must take a look back out there and see whether
- 1:45:52anybody, you know, when you're looking back to
- 1:45:55just check around, getting ready to pitch, you
- 1:45:57must look at the scoreboard. Could you see those
- 1:45:58big zeros? No, I don't look at the scoreboard.
- 1:46:00Not at all? No, I don't. So you sure didn't look
- 1:46:02at it tonight, huh? That's one of the things
- 1:46:04I don't do. I don't look at the scoreboard. I
- 1:46:06try to keep my mind on the hitter and the catcher.
- 1:46:08If I'm looking all around the ballpark, I usually
- 1:46:11got my head in the stands. I'm usually not concentrating
- 1:46:14like I want to. Sonny, when you pitched in California,
- 1:46:16they said that one of the California coaches
- 1:46:18stole some of your pitches and the way you were
- 1:46:20handling it. I know when you pitched in Minnesota,
- 1:46:22you tried to correct it. And obviously tonight,
- 1:46:25your fastball was blazing, your slider looked
- 1:46:27like it was going, and your curveball was jumping.
- 1:46:30I think I made an adjustment on my slider. It
- 1:46:35resorts back to one thing. I don't like to say
- 1:46:38it because I think... It's all right. We don't
- 1:46:41want you to give away any secrets. No, I don't
- 1:46:42want anybody looking for it. Sonny Siebert, we
- 1:46:45want to congratulate you. This is one of the
- 1:46:47greatest moments a young man can have in his
- 1:46:49lifetime. And I would have to think now, thinking
- 1:46:52back to the years when your dad talked to you
- 1:46:54perhaps about being an outfielder. Aren't you
- 1:46:56glad now that you became a pitcher? Well, yeah,
- 1:46:58I'm just glad I'm being a big league player.
- 1:47:00I'm sure, we're sure proud of you. And, you know,
- 1:47:02only two men got on against you, Dick Nen, who
- 1:47:04walked in the fifth, an error to charge the shortstop
- 1:47:08on Casanova's ball. And then when you came to
- 1:47:11that final out, did the tension start to grow
- 1:47:13a little bit when you knew that you had to get
- 1:47:15that one? Well, Bob, blasting game, you know,
- 1:47:18severing, those kind of hitters are the toughest
- 1:47:21for me. I figure, well, if I can get those two
- 1:47:23guys out, I guess I deserve it because they're
- 1:47:25really tough. I'd rather see somebody like Frank
- 1:47:28Harder or somebody swinging real hard at the
- 1:47:30ball up there. I mean, that situation, I knew
- 1:47:33they'd probably get some wood on the ball, and
- 1:47:35I wasn't too sure of myself. I just gave them
- 1:47:38everything I had. Well, you sure did. Sonny Siebert,
- 1:47:40I know the reporters want to visit with you.
- 1:47:42We want to offer you our congratulations. It
- 1:47:44was a masterful job of pitching. Sonny Siebert
- 1:47:47with a no -hitter. Certainly a proud moment in
- 1:47:50your lifetime, and I hope there'll be a few more
- 1:47:52for you. Thank you, Bob. My pleasure. Sonny Siebert,
- 1:47:55and that's baseball tonight.
