- 1:05and what drives him to create not one, but two separate businesses from scratch.
- 1:12Let's get started and hear from Chris.
- 1:16Chris, welcome to the GrowthPro Edge.
- 1:18I'm so excited to have you here.
- 1:21Thank you.
- 1:22Uh, listen, before we get started, uh, I'm so excited to talk to you
- 1:26about your entrepreneurial spirit and how that has propelled you
- 1:31and the decisions that you've made in your life and your businesses.
- 1:35Plural.
- 1:36Uh, but before we do that, uh, tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 1:40Yeah.
- 1:41So, um, I am the, uh, owner of Let's Roll Bowling with a couple of other guys.
- 1:48We own three entertainment facilities.
- 1:51In Kansas, in Arkansas.
- 1:53Uh, I'm also a real estate entrepreneur.
- 1:56I do, uh, smaller single family homes, smaller multi-family
- 2:01and larger apartment complexes.
- 2:03Um, up to like a hundred unit, uh, complexes.
- 2:07And then I also have a W2 job full-time as well.
- 2:11So, and you have a family and you have signs kids?
- 2:15Yep.
- 2:16You got a lot going on.
- 2:19You've got a lot going on.
- 2:20So I wanna start with what led you to go from what 99.9% of Americans do, which
- 2:31is, I go to work for the man, right?
- 2:34I have a W2 job.
- 2:36I, I have this, this life to what first kind of sparked inside of you to say,
- 2:45I wanna start doing something else.
- 2:48I, there's, there's two moments in my life and two people that impacted that.
- 2:54So the first one was when I ran a bowling center 10 years
- 3:00ago for a guy named John Bland.
- 3:02Uh, he was a great.
- 3:04Entrepreneur in Arkansas.
- 3:06His dad did a lot for the city of Perold, which one of our centers are in.
- 3:11And he mentored me in a time where I was young in my early twenties,
- 3:16didn't know what the heck I was gonna do through life and, and everything.
- 3:19And.
- 3:20And he would tell me about real estate stuff that he was
- 3:23doing in Texas all the time.
- 3:24And it really turned into some cool conversations that I really enjoyed.
- 3:29And at the same time I met my at, at the time, she wasn't my wife.
- 3:32I met my wife at that time.
- 3:34And, um.
- 3:36You know, I, we always kind of just talked about, you know, after we get
- 3:38married and, you know, once we have some ability to do that, you know, I'd
- 3:42like to get into the real estate world.
- 3:45And, um, three weeks after we got married, we got under contract for our
- 3:49first house, our first rental house.
- 3:50So we kept that promise five years later, uh, after that.
- 3:55And then the, uh, second point in time was after my dad passed.
- 3:59Um, you know, maybe it was a little bit of a, uh, midlife
- 4:03crisis, dad crisis kind of thing.
- 4:05But I, I really wanted to, uh, do more with my life than, than what I
- 4:11was doing today, um, or at that time.
- 4:14So I joined a, uh, coaching and mentorship program for real estate,
- 4:18and that would be the, uh, what I'd call like the second accelerator.
- 4:22Um, that, that really, uh, changed my, you know, my business life.
- 4:29So I love that this is something that it's not just you, you and your
- 4:34wife, your partners, your partners in your marriage and your life together,
- 4:38but also, um, partnerships in this expansion into being an entrepreneur.
- 4:46Uh, and, and your wife.
- 4:47Uh, full disclosure, I've had the wonderful pleasure of knowing Chris
- 4:51for about 18 months and, uh, I've had the opportunity to meet your
- 4:55wife and spend some time with your wife, both super smart people.
- 5:00Um, did she always have that entrepreneurial spirit as well?
- 5:04No, I would say when we both met, we, we really both didn't have it.
- 5:08You know, we, we really, uh, we're, I mean, we're working in
- 5:11the same business for the same, same guy doing similar things.
- 5:15Uh, she was helping me run that center at the time and we were
- 5:18raising our kid and, and everything.
- 5:21And, um.
- 5:22Just slowly kind of transformed into this, you know, other way She was a
- 5:26nurse, didn't really enjoy nursing that much, especially during COVID.
- 5:30Um, you know, COVID was not kind to that industry.
- 5:33And, um, you know, that, that really accelerated that
- 5:37piece, uh, for her as well.
- 5:39So
- 5:41when we talk about this decision, now, you are still, it's important
- 5:45to note you've got this real estate.
- 5:49Business that you have that is, you know, you're always acquiring new
- 5:53places, remodeling, doing different things, expanding that portfolio.
- 5:59You also have started, uh, a new brand and sort of the FEC industry with Let's roll.
- 6:07You've got the centers in Kansas, you've got the center in Arkansas.
- 6:12You're working on expanding that, uh, how.
- 6:17And, and oh, by the way, you still have your W2.
- 6:20Mm-hmm.
- 6:21Why did you choose to keep your W2 while you're working on these entrepreneurial
- 6:30aspects, and I'm, I'm gonna say this is a lot more than just a side hustle, right?
- 6:34These are, yeah.
- 6:35Uh, big businesses on their own.
- 6:39Why, why still keep that W2 job?
- 6:42Um, so it was at the recommendation of my mentor in the real estate world, rod
- 6:48Cleef and, um, fear Paralyzes everybody is, is is what he, you know, really
- 6:56stresses and, um, fear can come up when you don't have enough money or things
- 7:02get stressful and tight and everything.
- 7:04And the W2 job, you know, allows me to.
- 7:08Um, not be in a position where I need to worry if, you know, just this weekend we
- 7:14had some snowstorms and, and you know, you don't have to be worried about,
- 7:18well, if it's a bad week or a bad month in business or something goes wrong,
- 7:22you know, early on when you're growing that it doesn't, you know that fear.
- 7:27Doesn't paralyze you to be able to move and grow.
- 7:30So to, you know, it's, it's not a, it's not a 10 year, you know, outlook where I,
- 7:35where I plan on being in a W2 job forever.
- 7:37But it was definitely a short term like, hey, this is stable income.
- 7:42I could still do it with doing my other, other items and, and other,
- 7:46other entrepreneurial stuff and allow myself to get to the point where
- 7:50it'll eventually replace my income.
- 7:53Um, also, you know, just practically from a. Investment standpoint.
- 7:58Um, you know, it takes a couple years for investments to really kind of
- 8:01return, you know, it takes 2, 3, 4 years to, to really start growing that.
- 8:06And early on, um, you know, uh, a lot of times you don't make any
- 8:11money the first 12, 24, 36 months in business because you're reinvesting
- 8:15in that business, redeveloping it.
- 8:17In our case, at Let's Roll, we're.
- 8:20You know, we're growing it not only at a single location, but multi-location so
- 8:24that, you know, that does involve more cost, um, you know, into that world.
- 8:29And, and, you know, I don't sit here any day and worry and, and fear
- 8:35doesn't paralyze me from making the right decisions in our business.
- 8:39So I love that because that is something that I. I can't imagine,
- 8:45and we're gonna have a whole nother conversation about this, of, of what
- 8:49is your life like every day with all of this stuff that you have going on.
- 8:53But, um, the fear prevents people from, from doing a lot of things from, they
- 9:01may have a wonderful idea for a business, but they're too afraid to start it.
- 9:05Or they may know that something needs to be done.
- 9:09But they're fearful of the immediate outcome of that.
- 9:14And don't make the decision, even though that's the best long-term
- 9:17decision, that fear is such a roadblock for so many people, keeping
- 9:23you from doing what you need to do.
- 9:26So for you, that W2 job was a way to take that fear off of the tape.
- 9:31Yes.
- 9:32Yeah.
- 9:32That way it's just, it's just not a thing.
- 9:34And um, there'll be a point in time in life where I'm at that W2 job and
- 9:38I've moved on, but that is because of the years of investing previously that
- 9:43then replace that and, and replace that item that was blocking that fear out.
- 9:48And then when that's replaced, you can move on to, you know,
- 9:50bigger and better things.
- 9:52That's great.
- 9:53That's great.
- 9:54So you, you brought up another.
- 9:56Factor that keeps people from listening to that entrepreneurial spirit.
- 10:02And that is the reality that it takes time to get a return on that investment.
- 10:09So if you, you know, most businesses, as you mentioned, it could be 12
- 10:13months, it could be 24 months, it could be 36 months before you even
- 10:19break even much less, see a profit.
- 10:23And so what conversations do you have with yourself and, and, and, and your
- 10:32wife about how you handle that timeframe?
- 10:39Yeah, it's, it's not easy, you know, to, to say it's, it,
- 10:43it, it's definitely not easy.
- 10:44Um, you know, I try to, I, I have a reminder on my phone every day that
- 10:50tells me, um, a couple of things.
- 10:52One of 'em is optimistic.
- 10:54One of 'em is, you know, to stay positive.
- 10:57Um, my wife reminds me every once in a while when, you know, I. Lean
- 11:03towards the cup half empty side.
- 11:05Um, because that does just naturally happen as, as a human being.
- 11:09It also naturally happens because of social media and all the crazy stuff
- 11:12that's out there that we tend to lean more towards, half empty versus half full.
- 11:16Um, and yeah.
- 11:20And then, um.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:24You know, so the support of my wife is a big piece of it.
- 11:27And then I also journal, so I, I started that a couple of weeks ago and one
- 11:31of my first journals was about, um, a particular business that is, I don't wanna
- 11:37say like, just completely struggling, but, you know, it's, it's definitely on
- 11:40the lower end of profitability and, um.
- 11:43And I, that journal like really helped me, um, get some of my thoughts out
- 11:49on paper that maybe were just sitting in the back of my brain that, that I
- 11:54didn't, I, I didn't even almost know were there till I just started writing.
- 11:57It ended up being two pages long.
- 11:59Um, and so between all those things and just letting it out and talk, you
- 12:03know, having my wife there as a sounding board and, and all those things just.
- 12:08Really helped me get through that time.
- 12:10Um, just, just mentally and personally.
- 12:12You know, the, the business piece you just churn through and we do
- 12:15our weekly meetings, our biweekly meetings, our quarterly planning.
- 12:18We do all those things and, and things are all just naturally churning.
- 12:23But, um, all that doesn't matter.
- 12:25If the personal piece is a disaster and a mess, you know, if that, if that piece
- 12:30isn't clean and you're not, you know.
- 12:33Going to the meetings and doing those things in a positive manner.
- 12:37It doesn't matter what you're doing.
- 12:38So that that piece is really important to make sure you take care of.
- 12:43So I love that you know, you are somebody that is very intentional.
- 12:50And I guess with as many things as you have your hands, then you
- 12:52have to be super intentional.
- 12:54But you're intentional on setting clear goals and clear expectations
- 12:59for yourself, for your business, for your employees, for your team members.
- 13:04Uh, setting those goals that turn into plans.
- 13:10Is that something that you picked up along the way or is that just
- 13:15kind of how you've always been?
- 13:17Definitely picked up along the way.
- 13:19Um, you know, I, the, my, uh, mentor Rod, um, makes it a good point
- 13:27of, you know, people say like, how do I do everything that I do?
- 13:30And it's no different than trying to run a marathon or trying to run a 5K or a
- 13:3610 k of if you tried to do that day one.
- 13:40You can't get, you know, there's no way I'm just gonna, you know,
- 13:43leave what I'm doing and go run a 5K immediately, you know?
- 13:46So you train yourself to be able to get there.
- 13:48You train yourself to be able to lift 300 pounds on a bench wrist,
- 13:52and you can't do that from day one.
- 13:53And that's.
- 13:55How I look at how I got from point A to point B, um, is that,
- 13:59you know, over time, you know, I started developing and learning,
- 14:02well golly, I gotta take on this.
- 14:04You know, so how do I, you know, how do I get more organized?
- 14:07And then I took on something else and it's like, okay, how do I get more organized?
- 14:10And then, you know, other things, you know, became on like the who not how
- 14:15theory on who can help me instead of.
- 14:17How do I just manage more things?
- 14:19And that, you know, that's just, it's all just slowly morphed over time.
- 14:23Um, and, and that's why I tell people personally, people are always
- 14:26like, what would you do different?
- 14:27And I'm one that I wouldn't do any of the process different because how I got
- 14:31from point A to, you know, point m. Or whatever I am at now, the only way I got
- 14:35there is by learning and, and failing, and then relearning, and then failing
- 14:40again, and then relearning and just keep continuing moving forward till I, you
- 14:44know, developed, you know, this kind of process that I have today of, you know,
- 14:49managing all these different businesses.
- 14:52So failure is something that's gonna happen, right?
- 14:56Uh, sometimes it's on a large scale, sometimes it's on a small scale.
- 15:01We're all gonna make mistakes.
- 15:02Uh, things aren't gonna go exactly as we had initially planned, no
- 15:06matter how wonderful our plan is.
- 15:10You, you said something that I wanna kind of underline is you
- 15:15failed and you learned something.
- 15:18Yep.
- 15:20The importance of recognizing 'cause I think the fear of failure is another
- 15:25fear that keeps us from doing things.
- 15:28Or the fear that it's the wrong thing to do.
- 15:31Talk about your process of committing to a decision but not
- 15:38being fully tied to the outcome.
- 15:44Yeah.
- 15:44Um, you know, I'm, I'm definitely the guy that I, I see something
- 15:49happening and I realize what we're doing today isn't working, so let's
- 15:53do something different and, uh.
- 15:56Fear and everything else.
- 15:58And failure can make somebody or a lot of people think about the
- 16:03outcome before it even gets there.
- 16:05And I, you know, I look at it as well, I can guess the outcome.
- 16:12Or I can allow the outcome to happen and see and massage it along the way
- 16:17and work through additional problems that come up and eventually end at
- 16:21what hopefully is, is a good solution.
- 16:23And if it's not and that wasn't the right thing, well a month, you
- 16:26know, reevaluation is, is, is okay.
- 16:29And I guess the other thing I would maybe say is, you know, no decision.
- 16:33That we really make is so permanent that you can't go back minus like a
- 16:37tattoo or something crazy, you know?
- 16:39But in general, um, from a business standpoint, if you wanna do something
- 16:43different in marketing or you want to make a manager change, even you,
- 16:48that's a fairly significant change.
- 16:49Like nothing is so permanent that you can't go back and say, Hey
- 16:52look, you know, like, I messed up.
- 16:54This isn't the right move.
- 16:56Let's, let's reevaluate and try something else.
- 16:58And.
- 16:59We can either try those things and turn through all those things a year and
- 17:03until we find the solution or we can sit back and help, you know, and just
- 17:08think about what the solution could be.
- 17:10Think about all the outcomes, but never actually know if
- 17:13it's the right outcome or not.
- 17:16And, and so many times people are afraid to say, oh, that was wrong.
- 17:25This isn't working out the way we thought it was going to.
- 17:27Let's try something else.
- 17:29Building the culture that that's okay.
- 17:33It's okay to, to admit that.
- 17:35Uh, and it's okay that it didn't work out the way we thought it was.
- 17:39What can we learn from it and do we need to tweak it?
- 17:42Do we need to change it or do we just need to not do that anymore
- 17:45and do something totally different?
- 17:48The ability to do that is what can help move things forward,
- 17:54but that fear of, I'm not sure.
- 17:58I think is, is is sometimes worse for, for any business, right?
- 18:03Yeah.
- 18:03And, and look, you know, no decision that I think any, any
- 18:07good business person makes.
- 18:08We don't know the outcomes, you know, we don't know what it's gonna be.
- 18:11We have a intelligent guest based upon our experience and our business and in
- 18:17our doors and what we've done before.
- 18:19But, you know, to sit back and think of, you know, of.
- 18:24Any marketing plan, business plan, or anything that's gone to plan?
- 18:28I, I don't have a single wand.
- 18:29You know, that's actually, that's actually gone there out.
- 18:31Some have done better, some have done worse.
- 18:33Um, none have been, none have been flaming messes, you know, by any means.
- 18:39You know, so like, things don't turn out great and, you know, over, you know,
- 18:44have less income, have more expense.
- 18:45You know, there's all those things that, that can go bad.
- 18:48Um, but.
- 18:52If you don't even try and you don't do it, then you, you, you never get anywhere.
- 18:56Um, so, you know, finding, you know, I, I guess I look at it as, as long
- 19:01as we're moving forward in some direction, everything's moving forward.
- 19:05Um, even if it ends up swerving, left, swerving right, um, even
- 19:10if it turns backwards a little bit, at least you're moving.
- 19:13Um, I think sitting still in business could be the worst.
- 19:17Possible thing to do.
- 19:18And, and that's when, you know, that's when you know, somebody's super fearful,
- 19:23scared, nervous, whatever it is.
- 19:26And I just look at it as, let's see how it turns out.
- 19:29And in six weeks if it doesn't work, we'll just try again.
- 19:31We'll come up with something new.
- 19:32And, and I, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
- 19:35And, and other business people should not be afraid.
- 19:38Of those things because failure makes us grow.
- 19:42And if we never fail, we, we really never learn.
- 19:44It's no different than walking.
- 19:46Um, when we started walking, you fell a thousand times and
- 19:50eventually you learn not to fall.
- 19:51And, and it's, it's just, no, it's really no different.
- 19:54And it's, it's really as simple as that.
- 19:58That's great.
- 19:58That's great.
- 19:59Chris, what would you tell yourself?
- 20:03You've been doing this for a few years now.
- 20:05What would you tell yourself, your younger self when you
- 20:09were first starting this out?
- 20:12What would you say to that?
- 20:16Chris Moyer from however many years ago?
- 20:20What would that piece of advice be to that kid?
- 20:24Ooh, I, my wife and I were just talking about this the other day because it's
- 20:28coming up on my 20 year high school anniversary, uh, in a couple of months.
- 20:32And we were talking about, uh, I was talking about myself.
- 20:35If I, if I would've seen myself 20 years in the future.
- 20:38This is not where I thought I would be.
- 20:39Um, I think some people thought I'd be in a comedy club or working at McDonald's
- 20:45or on the fryer or something like that.
- 20:4720 years from then, you know, I was kind of the jokester kid.
- 20:50Um, a little bit of the troublemaker in high school.
- 20:53Um, I'd say the one thing I would tell myself is to learn and educate myself.
- 21:00Um, not from a, you know, not speaking from a college standpoint,
- 21:05but from a practical standpoint.
- 21:06Like, I, I wasn't much of a reader as a kid.
- 21:09Um, and I definitely did not take the, uh, take the route of like listening
- 21:16to others at, at first when I was young and taking advice really well.
- 21:20So if I had to go back.
- 21:22That would be definitely one.
- 21:23'cause I'm sure between the ages of 13 and 23, um, I missed out on probably a
- 21:30lot of really good learning opportunities that I told myself that I just, you
- 21:36know, just weren't worth my time.
- 21:40That's great.
- 21:40That's great.
- 21:42All right, Chris, we're coming to the end of our time here and obviously the
- 21:45growth pro edge we are about growth.
- 21:48The growth of people's business, of, of people's teams, and of ourselves.
- 21:54So I've gotta ask you the question, what do you do to grow yourself?
- 22:03Yeah, I, I still listen to podcasts.
- 22:05I still read, I still am, you know, trying new things like
- 22:10this journaling thing is new.
- 22:11I've never journaled a day in my life, um, up until January, 2026.
- 22:17So, you know, I take not only the business aspect, but the personal
- 22:20aspect, kind of the same way of, well, you know, I, let's try something new.
