- 0:00Learning to Trust the Lord Together by Elder Hans T Boom
- 0:05and Sister Marjan Bohm. Elder Boom is a general
- 0:09authority 70 When our eldest son Joshua was 18 months old, he
- 0:16became sick. We did not know what the problem
- 0:19was, but his digestive system did not work properly.
- 0:22He would not eat. It was a constant battle just to
- 0:25feed him. We took Joshua to the hospital
- 0:28several times and tried medication for more than a year.
- 0:32We did not see any improvements during this time.
- 0:36We continually pleaded with the Lord, asking will you heal our
- 0:41little boy? At a certain point we thought we
- 0:44were going to lose him. We wanted Joshua to be healed,
- 0:49but we started to think as the scriptures say, but if not, if
- 0:54Joshua was not going to be healed and we needed to prepare
- 0:58for another outcome, what were we going to do?
- 1:02We decided that the Lord knew what was best.
- 1:05Our pleading changed from will you heal our son to Lord if this
- 1:11is what is needed, If you need Joshua back, we accept it.
- 1:16After some time, Joshua began to improve.
- 1:19Thankfully, we did not lose him. This experience helped us early
- 1:23in our marriage to set our priorities straight.
- 1:26We decided that our faith would not be shaken.
- 1:29When the challenges of life come, no matter what, we will
- 1:33trust the Lord and rely on Him. It begins with faith.
- 1:40Now, when challenges come, we think back to our experience
- 1:43with Joshua and know we can make it through as long as we have
- 1:46faith in Jesus Christ, even if what we hope and pray for does
- 1:51not happen. For each of us, faith is a
- 1:54choice. Elder Neal L Anderson of the
- 1:57Quorum of the 12 Apostles has taught.
- 2:01Faith in Jesus Christ is a gift from heaven that comes as we
- 2:05choose to believe and as we seek it and hold onto it.
- 2:10At a certain point in each of our lives, we have to decide if
- 2:14we will rely only on our own strength, let doubt and fear
- 2:18take over, or go forward with faith in Him.
- 2:22We have learned that faith should not be based on outcomes,
- 2:26but on trust. As we stay close to the Lord and
- 2:29rely on Him, He will bless us with what we need.
- 2:34It may not always be what we want in the moment, but we can
- 2:37always trust Him. As we do, our faith and trust
- 2:42are strengthened. Patience and trust.
- 2:47Years ago, Elder Boom served as a branch president.
- 2:51Our boys were little, and we had just moved from a noisy
- 2:54apartment that was not in the best part of town to a place
- 2:57that needed major renovation. We certainly had a lot on our
- 3:01plate. In his calling, Elderbone wanted
- 3:05to visit everyone in the branch. During one visit, someone
- 3:09threatened him. After that, he experienced a lot
- 3:12of anxiety and it affected his health.
- 3:16Elderbone visited a Doctor Who told him you need to slow down,
- 3:21you need to rest. We learned from this experience
- 3:25that it is important to balance our time and strength.
- 3:28There is only so much we can do at one time.
- 3:31The Lord will help us accomplish what is needed if we trust Him.
- 3:36An important part of trusting Him is having patience,
- 3:39especially when things do not happen, when or how we think
- 3:43they should. Even when we have done our best,
- 3:47we do not always know how the Lord will build our faith and
- 3:50strengthen us for the next step in our lives.
- 3:54That is where trust comes in. If we trust that the Lord knows
- 3:59and wants what is best for us, we should allow Him to guide us.
- 4:03He will help us as we move forward.
- 4:07Keeping a proper perspective, in Elder Bones April 2025 General
- 4:13Conference address, he spoke of his father's experience in a
- 4:17concentration prison camp as a young man during World War Two.
- 4:21He suffered immensely there. For years he worked hard so he
- 4:25would not have to think about that experience.
- 4:29But when Elder Boom was on his mission, the day came when
- 4:32memories flooded his father's mind.
- 4:35He suffered post traumatic stress and could not function
- 4:39for several years. This was a terrible time in his
- 4:42life. Thankfully, he overcame that
- 4:45trial with the Lord's help. Years later, this experience
- 4:50gave him the strength and perspective to endure the loss
- 4:54of his sweetheart to Alzheimer's disease after 65 years of
- 4:58marriage. For us, this experience with
- 5:01Elder Boehm's mother was a challenge because we were far
- 5:05from home. On church assignments, his
- 5:08siblings visited and cared for her, but we felt that we were
- 5:11unable to do our part. When we visited her every
- 5:15summer, it was difficult to see that mentally she was gone.
- 5:21Before she passed away in February 2025, we prayed and
- 5:26asked the Lord why she had to suffer for six long years.
- 5:30We still do not know why, but we have learned to leave these
- 5:33kinds of matters in the hands of the Lord.
- 5:36We are here to experience both joy and sorrow so we can learn
- 5:41and progress. We shouted for joy in the pre
- 5:44mortal life at this opportunity. If we were protected from
- 5:48everything, we would learn nothing.
- 5:52We have to rely on the Lord if we are to receive the greatest
- 5:55blessings He has in store for us.
- 5:58We can keep a proper perspective as we continually trust and
- 6:02follow Him. Look forward with peace and joy
- 6:07through all things. The Lord Jesus Christ is our
- 6:10Saviour and our friend. With Him we can feel peace amid
- 6:14life's challenges. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He
- 6:18paid the price for our sins, sorrows and struggles.
- 6:23He prayed 3 times for His Father to let this cup pass from him,
- 6:26but said nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt, Thy will
- 6:32be done. He paid the price willingly for
- 6:36us. We will never be asked to pay
- 6:38the price the Saviour paid. Because of him we will live
- 6:43again if we look to Him and follow Him.
- 6:46We have the promise of eternal life with him, our Heavenly
- 6:50Father and our loved ones. This brings peace.
- 6:54This also brings us joy throughout our lives, even in
- 6:58times of pain and uncertainty. President Russell M Nelson
- 7:02taught. When the focus of our lives is
- 7:05on Jesus Christ and His gospel, we can feel joy regardless of
- 7:10what is happening or not happening in our lives.
- 7:14Joy comes from and because of Him.
- 7:17He is the source of all joy for Latter Day Saints.
- 7:21Jesus Christ is joy. Trusting in the Lord is a
- 7:25wonderful way of life. Choosing faith over fear and
- 7:30embracing patience, peace and joy can provide hope in the face
- 7:34of adversity. With our trust in Jesus Christ,
- 7:38He can shape us into all that He knows we can become.
