- Jason: Well, welcome back, everybody. It is Sunday evening. We try to launch one off this morning, but we had one of our fellow members, Alex, oversleep, which I've done before. And we all got off to a rocky start right here with Marcus having a major coughing fit out of the blue. Marcus: Yeah, I don't know what that was. I'm good. I don't know what happened. Jason: He got excited about the going live here recording, and so you're like, my gosh. Marcus: Yeah, I got excited. Alex: Heck did I just walk in on? Jason: Hopefully there'll be Marcus: How are you? Jason: more excitement. Do what? Alex: What the heck did I walk in on here? Marcus: and Jason: Like literally we're like, okay, Alex isn't on yet. Let's just go ahead and get going. I hit record. Mark's like, let's do it. And as soon as I it said five, four, three, he just had like a thirty second coughing fit. Just took Marcus: coughing fit. Jason: him out. Alex: Pressure being the lead host got to him there. He couldn't do the welcome. Marcus: Yeah, I did. Jason: It might have. He's usually their producer. It's like looking up stuff for us. He has like, wait, I gotta talk now. Alex: Well, we we have to make some changes, apparently. You know, Marcus has to be the host, I can be producer. you know, we'll we'll just make a few changes here since I was late. Marcus: Yeah, we'll just do it on the fly. Jason: Yeah, we'll mix it up. That's Alex: It it also doesn't also Jason: all good. Alex: doesn't help that I woke up, you know, late and left y'all high and dry this morning on recording. Jason: that's all good. I mean I did it to you guys like what, a month or so ago? Like it just it happens. It's part of our life, right? Like we're just Marcus: Mm-hmm. I got a bank one now. Alex: Yeah. It I would like to say it's because I was drinking last night, but I haven't had a lick. It was just I went to bed and apparently just went straight through my alarm this morning. Marcus: You Alex: I even remember laying down in bed and saying, I need to set my alarm. I set my alarm and next thing I know, I'm waking up at 7 30 to text messages from y'all, and I was like, Well, shoot. Marcus: Well you messaged us at 1130 and I was like Jason: Well yeah. Marcus: there's no way he's getting up Alex: I honestly I do that every sa Jason: Yeah, that's right. Alex: Saturday. I stay up we stay up pretty late. Like last Saturday we Marcus: okay. Alex: went out to Mavericks and danced and the next morning I woke up and perfectly fine type stuff. So I mean I I'm used to it, but yeah, I I Jason: Just missed the boat on this one. Alex: I just yeah, slept straight through my alarm. Jason: Yeah, I was like, we're sitting Marcus: Ahem. Jason: here like, well, it was good because we were trying to figure out, okay, what do we want to talk about? So then we kind of just batted around a few ideas and we're like, well, it's fifteen past, he's still not on. I don't think it's happening. So we came up with some Alex: Yeah, y'all Jason: ideas. Alex: y'all gotta call me. it it I'll hear my watch. Cause I don't sleep with it on, but I sleep with it on the nightstand charging. Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: I'll hear my watch, but my phone's on silence. So if you text me when I'm sleeping, I I don't hear the text. My phone, I don't even Jason: Mm, gotcha. Marcus: noted. Alex: you know the newer phones? I think it's iPhone 16. that little button that used to be the silence button. You can program it to be something else. Marcus: Yeah, it's a flashlight. Yeah. Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: I've completely turned that I disabled the button in general. So like I don't even know how to turn my ringer on if you ask me to. Marcus: think we got Jason: man. Marcus: into like a phase where everyone's phone is on silent. I mean, except, unless like you're really old. Alex: Again, you remember when we we used to yeah, we used to buy Jason: Yes. Alex: ringtones. And now it's like Marcus: Yeah. Jason: Yeah. Alex: I don't want to hear my phone ever. Like I d I Marcus: Uh-uh. Alex: don't want to hear it. Jason: No. Yeah. Marcus: Like I have different vibrations. Like that's how I know what kind of alerts they are. Alex: You have different haptic whatever. Jason: Yes. Yeah. Marcus: Yeah, yeah. Jason: Yes, they do keep yeah, you're right. It's like old people. you know, we're shooting weddings, right? And efficient or signs. Please silence and turn off your cell phones, whatever it is. Somewhere along the way, doo doo doo doo something loud and proud. And we're going, Are you serious right now? Or how FaceTime like blows up through like when you're at restaurants and then people open it up and they're just like Open conversation, Alex: yeah. Jason: FaceTime, open Marcus: yeah. Jason: mic, and you're trying to have a nice dinner and it's just everything everybody can hear what's going on. Marcus: Have to Have y'all had anyone in a wedding just full-on have a conversation or do they just? Rush Jason: He's Marcus: turn it off. It's like yeah. Hey, I'm at a wedding. Yeah. Yeah, I'll call you back. Yep Jason: Right. Not during ceremony. I think probably like other times there are people like calling it, but yeah, you see them scrambling trying to shut it off. They're like, like, why is it even on? Like you have an Apple watch. Like I could see you Marcus: Yeah. Yeah. Jason: have an Apple watch and you're scrambling for your phone. I forgot to like, gosh. It's like those annoying people in the airplanes that they the stewards or stewards, put flight attendants. Yeah, there we go. Or like Turn off your cell phones, get off your cell phone, make sure it's not airplay mode and people are like, okay, whatever, and they're still on it. It's like we can't leave. Yeah. Marcus: That's happened to me before. I don't want to say that I was annoying, but I really had to finish that conversation before taking off. Jason: Yeah. I mean, I get if you're Marcus: But yes. Jason: still taxiing, but it's like we're on the jet way and people are still like like Marcus: Yeah. Jason: ready to take off, like still messing with stuff. I was like, come on. Like it's not that important. Like and most of the time they're usually just on social media. They're not even on a call or doing anything. Marcus: Yeah. Jason: Trying to get their fix in. Alex: Yeah. boys. Well, I don't know if y'all even got to the welcome since Marcus had a Jason: We did. Alex: a fit. perfect. so we're gonna get into it. We have on the agenda today, we're gonna hear all about Marcus's coaching fiasco. yes. Jason: Yeah, we gotta get into that. Alex: Jason and golf, which is always a recipe for laughter and a head case that he is. Jason: we came up with a h plan. Marcus: It woke me up this morning. It was that funny. Alex: And and and then we're gonna talk about adding constraints to to practice. so I guess let's get into this today. it's nice to not have as much golf talk. I think past two episodes we've been really focused. There's been so much going on. Walker Cup, Solheim Cup, Presidents Cup is this weekend. Jason: Come in this weekend. Alex: so next weekend we'll have quite a bit to talk about. so Marcus, how's how's coaching going, man? Marcus: Man, I almost called you one day. Alex: Terrible idea. Marcus: Yeah, no, this was like kind of phoning a friend because I had told Blake, said, you know, got the new role, new job. And then, you know, I was going to start coaching and, you know, helping her coach. And then I just got into I was straight up with Blake. said, I think I'm having anxiety. over coaching. She's like, really? said, Yeah, I said, I would have dreams like, of little baby sharks that like were in the water and they were like nipping at my heels. So then I was just kind of like googling and like, what does this mean in a dream and this and that it's like, because you're over a boat and you have responsibilities and because they were little is probably what's going on. And I was like, so Actually just kind of talked through it with with Blake here and just kind of said, yeah, I think I Said I thought it was gonna be the new job giving me or the new, you roll giving me anxiety But it wasn't even that it was more of want to be the best that I could for the kids And last week because I was on uber duty that's when I kind of had that Alex: Ha ha ha. Marcus: That's when I had that weekend to myself Which I was coaching Addie's team, her team by myself, and I coached Marcus's team without Marcus being there. And I coached Addie's team again that Sunday and I felt great. Like it was it was good. And I told Blake, like, look, I think I just needed to do this by myself. And because I had kind of her as a safety net, it kind of felt like, I don't know, it was like, I don't know, I was just kind of over overthinking a lot of things. But once I got into it, it was coaching so much fun. The girls are great They're hilarious The boys they are they are some dogs. They they like to play They don't like to pass the ball as much but that's all right we're working on that But they do they get the concept they want to shoot they want to score they want to win And so that's that's all it's all all positives, you know usually You know with with the guys or with the with the boys I usually kind of ask them after the game It's like all right. What did what do we do wrong? Because usually they do a lot of things right there always score in there Yeah, doing that's like what do we need to work on in practice? And I mean they're they're on it They're like well, we kind of messed up on throw-ins and I don't really know what to do on corners We could probably fix some goal kicks and so it's like all right. That's that's what we'll practice and and it's good. So it's been a very good approach here with the boys. But that was my slight panic, anxiety attack. I want to say an anxiety attack, but I felt that you kind of feel it coming on, you know? But Jason: Mm-hmm. Marcus: yeah, was pretty close to calling you, Alex, but I talked it through. Alex: Man, it's you know, Jason's obviously been a hot minute from doing any coaching. so I'm sure when Miles gets back into it, he'll he'll remember the feelings. But I think it's always anxiety. Jason: Not looking forward to it. Alex: Yeah, Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: I I think it's it's always anxiety because you're trying to teach stuff. I do I even when I'm coaching like the catchers, like I'm pretty confident in what I'm doing and telling them. But Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: Every Wednesday when I'm trying to draw up a practice plan and can we make this good? Can we make it engaging? Can we make sure they're learning and doing the fundamentals? Like, it's still anxiety. Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: I mean, it's you want to make sure you're doing the right thing by them. Shoot, it's that way with anything. Like, I go take Bell at a horseback ride and I know what I'm doing on the horse. I know how I need to communicate with the horse to get it to do what I want it to do. But like Educating and getting it Jason: Hmm. Alex: to a way that Bella can understand it is is a whole new Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: concept and so it's always gonna be anxiety and no matter how used to it you get, I think that's why like so many head coaches like at the pro level have you know, heart attack type issues be or high blood pressure, Marcus: Yeah. Alex: 'cause it's just like it is anxiety every day of your life, coaching. Marcus: Yeah, and that's the thing that it's kind of like, I don't want to teach them the wrong thing. want them to take the positives and you you learn a lot from your old coaches. I try to be purposeful with like my body language, with tone and how I'm trying to get their attention and do things. So I catch myself. The only one that I... That it slips up on is like when Marcus does something and I mean, but that's my own kid I can do whatever I want at that point Alex: Yeah. Marcus: But that's the one I'm having a little trouble with but it's alright it's getting better Jason: I can contest to that. Alex: You you can always tell you can always tell the coach's son. It's it's the one that's getting yelled at really loudly. Marcus: Yeah. Yeah. Jason: I just I coached Maddie's team and I I just remember it's all bring me flashbacks, what you're talking about. It's you're always harder on your own kid. You always want your kid to have the ball or be the quarterback of the team, you know, do all the good things and you gotta take a back seat if another player is running with it, it's like, okay, that's fine. And then try not to push her or your kids. After practice, like, hey, why did you let so and so always beat you the ball? Why are you not being like I think that's the problem with a lot of parents Marcus: Mm-hmm. Jason: to this you know, this day, they just drive their kids too hard. The kids either get burnt out or hate it. But you know, I had the anxiety, like you want your kid to do well, more so than the team in some aspects. And it's it's an internal struggle. for sure. Marcus: Mm-hmm Yeah, which At least on the girl side. I mean they The most I have to deal with over there is I mean they got to go pee and so I was like well Go tell your parents. Jason: Yeah. Marcus: I was I was on the field So the first game I could be on the field with them the second game I had to be on the sideline and so the first game I think There's like seven girls and there's three on the field. No four on the field And four of them had to go potty. Three of them had already played, but they were coming off the like, come and take a break. And so they were all sweating. I was like, hey, you got to get back in there. Everyone else is going on a T.T. And so that was funny. It's just I don't know. They're they're fun. It's different with them. I mean, they're just there to have fun and go kick the ball and all that. And and it's it's it's interesting now that Blake is. She wasn't here for the first two games, but we did you know the second games or second and third games this past weekend and Yeah, she's got the body language of a teacher like is just like if they mess up like she's hands her hands are on her knees and just like groaning us like you need to be You need to be careful with that Alex: Dude, okay. So, I I don't know if Casey is still up to date on all of our episodes, and I'm kind of hoping she forgets about this one. But Marcus: Yeah. Alex: I went to Bella's game yesterday and I told Casey after because I will fully admit that I'm a hard ass as a coach. I'm also like the coach that like we went to a pool party with Grayson's team, and all the kids are jumping on me. And I have like they all call me coach. JJ for some reason. Like, I don't even know where it came from. I have a nickname. I have all this stuff. And like, so it's like we have that friendly, but we also have the hard ass side of it. And man, I saw Casey coach and I told her after the game, I was like, you don't get to tell me how Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: I can coach anymore after what I just saw with you with a bunch of five year olds. It's like that there's no, there's no more like Telling me how to talk to ten year olds on the baseball field. Marcus: some there. Jason: Yeah. Alex: I'll lose me. Jason: That's strange. here we go again. Here we go. But I I I know Marcus: he dropped off. He's back. Jason: I can ill I know what he's alluding to. There's he's the the favorite coach. Like all the kids want to go to him, but you gotta there's who's gonna be the bad cop? Good cop, bad cop, and find that balance. But yeah, maybe he just has that approachable personality that the kids like. Marcus: Yeah, yeah, which is good. That's why you gotta tote that fine line of how Alex was alluding to the, I assume being that fun coach and the hard ass, I guess, to keep him in line. Jason: Yeah. Marcus: Is that where you're going, Alex? Alex: Yeah, I guess you yeah, I guess y'all lost me there. I don't know what just happened. but yeah, that no, that's exactly it was like I'm I'm the hard ass, but I'm also like the one they play with. And I saw Casey coach a bunch of five year olds and how she got onto them on the field. And Jason: Okay. Alex: afterwards I was like, You you don't get to tell me anymore about my tone and how I get on to the kids. Cause I just saw how you yelled at a bunch of five year olds. So I think we just call Marcus: Yeah Alex: this one a moot point. Like we're done. I think we're Marcus: You Alex: we're probably the same. Yeah, I was like, man, that Jason: Truce, truce. Alex: yeah, it was tough. I I get it. And I will fully admit, like, I'm the hard ass coach, but I think I take a personal approach to it. Like life is not very fair and life is really hard. So I'm not gonna sugarcoat it when you're doing bad. Like I we have other coaches that are really good about that approach, but me, Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: I look at them like, no, you're not playing good. So we're gonna make a change, or we're gonna do this, or you're not you're not doing what you need to be doing. So Grayson but it's also the other side of it. Like I'll talk to him. They lost last Monday by one run. And of course that last run came because of a wild pitch that went it wasn't even a wild pitch, it was a pitch that went straight through Grayson's legs. Never should have happened. Marcus: Hmm. Alex: Like you you can't let a ball get b between your legs. And he's crying and I lost the game. And you know, I let him have his moment because I'm not big into like Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: the coddle. Like you can self-soothe, you Jason: Like Alex: can figure out, and then we'll have a conversation. Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: And I sat down with him after I was like, dude, look, did you make errors? Absolutely. Did you cost a run or two? Absolutely. Did you strike out two times? Absolutely. But there's not a single person on that team that didn't have an error today. Like that was just a poorly played game by everyone. Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: We had people get out on the bases when they weren't told to steal. They this and that. So, like, that's the kind of coach that I am. Like, I'm gonna call you out on your stuff, Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: but I'm also gonna tell you that you're not the reason we lost as a team. And I do that with our coach. Like our coach in practice the next day was like, or two days later was like, I I failed y'all as a coach. And I timed in, I was like, hey, I wanna be clear. Like, it wasn't just Coach Paul. Like, we all, all the coaches failed y'all as coaches. Like, we didn't Marcus: Yeah. Alex: prepare you for what that game was gonna be. That's just how I that's how I approach it. So I sugarcoat. I just I'm gonna say how it Marcus: Yeah. Yeah. Alex: is and we're gonna move on. Marcus: Yeah, I can be I think it for me. It's easier to be just upfront and honest with with the boys to With the girls, I don't know. I take a little bit of a different because I mean they're there but I mean They they want to do the right things, but it's all it's all about practice at that point But for the guys, I mean they're they know what they're doing to a certain point and you know, we had a One of the guy or one of the boys was was like hey so-and-so is being bossy On the on the field he was telling me that I need to be here. It's like what was he saying? He's like, that I was the one and he was a two because we're doing a throw in a blah blah blah I said did we practice that in or did we do that in practice this past week? He's like, yeah, I was like, okay then so-and-so was right like you weren't in the right spot and he was moving you so That's that's what we need to do. It's like either he's gonna tell you or I'm gonna tell you So he was like, okay. I guess he wasn't being Alex: Yeah. Marcus: bossy But yeah, it is it is so fun seeing the wives coach because it's like yeah, you can't you can't tell me about tone or body language or anything because it's right there Jason: No. Well, I was gonna say got a little history of, you know, Marcus's background and your guys' connection this morning while we were waiting for you to come out of your slumber. but knowing that both Blake and Casey played for the Broncos during a highly competitive era for them, like state Alex: huh. Jason: runs and stuff, and they're coaches. So they're like you said, you're transitioning from your previous coaches. So it's just a trickle down effect. And, you know, we're trying to get older and wiser about how we're approaching our tactics and sometimes habits are hard to break because you know, even like with the golf boys, I feel like I'm the one that wants to win more than they do. Like we Alex: yeah. Jason: have the coaches have more competitive drive, but like our playing days are done. Like you guys have the fortunate, you know, to fortune to like go out and practice hours a day or multiple days a week. Like I haven't touched clubs in they asked me, when should play? I haven't touched clubs in almost a month. I go, You are very fortunate to be where you're at and to develop your skill. So, yes, you should be playing better than me. Like I should not be shooting better than you because I just don't have the time that you guys do. But yeah, coaching mostly girls my whole career, but watching the boys play, you know, through high school, like just the teams. I mean, and even you see it even on professional level, there is a different dynamic between girls and guys on how this pretty much the overall system is played on how they approach their game. Alex: Mm-hmm. Jason: so both very entertaining but you could definitely tell there is a a difference. Alex: Yeah, there's there's a big reason, like you said, with Blake and Casey playing during that big high school run. and I was a lot of the girls that I knew, in the soccer world were on that team 'cause my age group were so they think it seniors when they were in that last state run, 'cause I think Casey was a freshman with Blake. and I played, obviously, won a couple of state championships in the private school world and played in college and There's a very big reason why I don't coach soccer and why I refuse to coach soccer. Like I won't do it. I don't want to do it. it it's just I won't do well with it. So I've I've avoided coaching Jason: Ha ha Alex: all soccer. Like even when the boys were playing, I was like, nope, I will do baseball. I you know, I played baseball, but I wasn't Marcus: You Alex: as competitive in baseball as I was in soccer, so I can at least tone that one back a little bit. But man, soccer, no, there's No chance in hell I'd Marcus: Yeah. Alex: be a good coach. I'd be way too hard on them. Jason: No. My age and by the time Miles gets up there, I'm just like I only help him with golf stuff. Like whatever he does, I'm I'm staying out of it. Alex: Yeah, it well, even like man, with Bella today on on the horse, I got frustrated with her because she's just there was no effort, you know, and it's one of those things that you have to be really annoying sometimes to get the horse to go. Like, especially if the horse is eating or is just woke up from the night or came in from the pasture, right? Like she really Comet really isn't a morning person, if we're being honest. And we go Sunday mornings, and Marcus: you Alex: it's I tell Bell, like, you have to kiss and kick and kiss and kick and kiss and kick until you're tired of kissing and kicking, then do it some more to get that horse to Marcus: Yeah. Alex: go sometimes. And Bell just wouldn't do it. Like, there's probably a solid five minutes that I jumped up on the border rail and I'm Jason: Mm. Alex: just sitting there drinking my coffee while Belle is on the horse, walking around the small little pen. And there's probably five minutes that she just like was sitting there staring and like comet wouldn't go. Bella would like kiss and kick and then stop. And like she kept looking back at me. I was like, I'm not helping you. Like, I'm not doing it for you. Like, at some point, you Marcus: Yeah. Alex: have to make the horse go. Jason: Yeah. Alex: Like, she was standing there long enough that comet fell asleep again. I had to walk over there and wait comet up, comment up just to go. I was like, But I was getting so frustrated with her, I was like, babe. Marcus: You Alex: I'm sitting here telling you exactly what to do and you're not doing it. Like I don't I can't kick for you. Like I'm not on the horse. I just I don't do yeah, Jason: Comet needs some caffeine. Marcus: Uh-huh. Alex: I don't do well with like I give you directions and you just don't want to do it. I I'm telling you what to do to be successful. You don't want to do it. I'm I'm that way at work too with our PMs. Like I'll tell our PMs, hey, this is how I think you should handle it. This is what I would do if I was in your seat and they won't do it. And then they'll come back to me a week later and give me something that happened because they didn't do it. I'm like, Well, I I don't know what you want me to say. Like I Marcus: Yeah. Alex: I told you what to do when you didn't want to do it. So I can make it a directive Marcus: Yeah. Alex: and tell you this is what you do, or I can say this is what I would do, thinking you're going to catch on to, hey, maybe I should listen to my director of operations. But maybe not. I just I Jason: Ha ha. Alex: I don't do well. This is why I coach very little and I try to stay out of it. And when I'm not coaching, I have a camera in front of my face so that I can just hide my facial expressions. Marcus: you Jason: Gosh. It's like the classrooms like you will pass my class because I'm giving you the tools and instruction to do it, but you r are refusing to do anything. You're sitting here, you're gonna fail. And then you question why you didn't pass the quiz or the test. Like, hmm, let's put the pieces together. Like you're not gonna succeed. Alex: That's that's just what I've never like understood about people. We we have as much as people want want to bitch about the education system, especially in Texas, I know it's not the best. But we have really great people that work in our education system that are trained and really good at what they do. And for people to not want to listen to that, and it that just goes with you through life. Like Casey and I have always said We don't care if you're the best on the team, but you will be the hardest worker on the team and you'll be the most coachable on the team. Those are the two things that we care about. Cause if you do Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: those two things, you will be successful in life. So it's always baffling to me when people don't want to listen to someone in a superior seat or someone in a seat that they're trying to share their expertise like in the classroom. It's like, why Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: wouldn't you sit and listen? I worked for a guy. He he said the right words. He he'd be like, Well, I'm not an expert, but I'm smart enough. to know I need to hire experts in their fields, but then he wouldn't listen to us when we would tell him what to do. It's like So you acknowledge Marcus: You Jason: Yeah. Alex: that you're not smart enough to know how to do the job, but then you don't want to listen to your department heads on how to do the job. So it doesn't really make sense. It's just it's baffling to me, like Marcus: Mm-hmm. Jason: Yeah. Alex: people that don't listen to people that know better. Jason: Gosh. Yeah. And like kids these days, they there's no accountability. They're gonna blame somebody else for missing the pass or dropping the ball. It's it's gonna be on that other person, not on them. Alex: I i it will. And, you know, again, I will fully acknowledge I laid in to trip earlier today because I take Bella to go ride Comet. I get home and within you know Jason: Mm. Alex: 30 minutes I'm having to change, pack up all my camera stuff and get trip to his lacrosse. And I was able to get home, eat a snack, pack up my stuff, change my clothes, and be ready to go before he was ready. I was like, dude, like you've been home all morning. I was out for two hours and came back. Like, why isn't your stuff ready? my stuff is ready. My my stuff's by the door. I said, Yeah, where Marcus: You Jason: Yeah. Alex: are you going? Because he was going in the backyard. I was like, where are you going? In Marcus: Yeah. Alex: the backyard. Why? My across it's back there. I said, so your stuff isn't ready. Like he's trying to like use words Marcus: my god. Alex: to get out of like, but I was I'm ready. All my stuff's packed. Well, it's it's not though, is it? It it's not. Because you're going outside. So that's what Marcus: Yeah. Alex: bothers me. Like, if he were to just look at me and be like, Marcus: Yeah. Alex: I lost track of time. I I will be ready in five minutes. Like, I'm sorry. I'd been like, All right, dude, appreciate it. Let's go. Let's just get your stuff. Let's go. But the Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: lack of accountability and the arguing back is a massive trigger for me. I don't know why, but Jason: my gosh. Alex: the minute those two boys talk back to me, I snap. I'm like, I had to walk out of the house the other day 'cause I was about to snap on one of I was like, I looked at Casey, I was like, I I need you to handle that. I'm gonna leave. Marcus: I'm a go. Alex: And I just walked out and I went and sat in my truck Jason: Ha ha. Alex: and was like, I'm ready to go. Y'all just get in the truck when you're ready. Like I'm just gonna sit right here. Marcus: Yeah. Jason: Gosh, those fun days. Yeah. It's the the high school. It's like there's no respect of authority. They think they're equals with you. And you're like, no, you're not there yet. I'm 18. So you're not you maybe identified as an adult, but you're definitely not an adult, and you're definitely not a man. Like Alex: I'm eighteen. Marcus: I'm pretty sure Blake has said, are a child. I am not afraid of you to multiple kids. It's like, dang, she's Alex: I can see Blake saying that. Marcus: kind of, yeah, she's kind of a hard ass in her own class, but it's good. I mean, some of them need it, but I don't know. Jason: That's it. I like I think there's a there's a lack of structure in their lives somewhere. And it's it sucks for us in the classrooms that we're having to parent and teach, because that's what it comes down to. Marcus: Mm-hmm. Jason: Just basic skills, basic socialization, basic just accountability and also just responsibility that hello, you're an adult, you're driving, right? So you should Marcus: Mm-hmm. Jason: be at a certain tier. Of certain things that we're expecting from you. Alex: Yeah, but they don't see it that Jason: But Alex: way. Jason: no, never. It's not what they do on TikTok. Marcus: These kids these days don't Alex: Yeah, exactly. Marcus: wanna work. They don't wanna work. Jason: No, I wanna be famous. Alex: Well Jason: I wanna be an influencer. Alex: Speaking of putting Jason: Gosh, we're on a rant right now. Alex: speaking of putting in the work, yeah. I mean it all ties together. It's still coaching. Jason: Yeah. Alex: you know, it's just different levels. Marcus: Bye. Alex: But you know, speaking of putting in the work, so I wanna hear about Jason's golf head case because it's been a while since I've gotten a text about golf stuff. So when I saw the Marcus: This is good. This is real good Jason: This is good, right? Alex: when I saw the agenda, I was like All right, this this is the Jason we've been waiting for. Like it's been a hot minute Marcus: No. Yes. Alex: since he's gone on a spiral in golf. I mean he has defin I don't know if he's just shielding me from it lately. I mean, we've talked about stuff, but it it's been a while since I've got a tech saying I'm gonna try a new club or this. So I I'm I'm intrigued to know what this one is. Marcus: I think it's built up and he's about to have a flare up here. So this is good. Sorry Jason floor's ears Jason: Yeah, I I think so. I think we're Alex: He sh he's been he's been suppressing it for a long time and now sh Marcus: So I haven't bought a pack of balls in a while Alex: I I I haven't I haven't bought Jason: It just Started with teas guys. I w I Alex: golf balls. I'm you just Jason: got some Western Birch teas and I'm just Marcus: I need to try a Max Fly golf ball. Alex: Hey, the Western Birch teas are great. I mean, Jason: Mount Saint Helens over here. Alex: no no free advertising on the podcast, but that is my tea of choice. Jason: no, I use them. I love them. Yeah. Those western birches are awesome. That's like probably the only thing I've actually bought in a while. Yeah, I think so. Marcus: Get to it, Jason. Jason: Just get to it. Alex: He's he's procrastinating. Marcus: Get to it. Alex: He's he's procrastinating. Marcus: Yeah. Alex: What what clubs did you buy that you didn't tell me about? Jason: it's not fair, Marcus already knows, so he's Marcus: No, but this is good. This is good. Jason: Alright. Okay, Alex: Is this a training aid? Jason: so no, no no no no no no Marcus: better. Jason: Yeah All right. So I've just been a can in a just a basic conundrum with all the crap that's in my garage. All right. So just all the old gear, old shafts, all that stuff. Just I'm like, I want to get rid of it. I want to clear it. It's on the verge of opening an eBay store, literally, to sell all my stuff. So I'm like, what am I gonna do? I don't want to put in the effort. Then I was just talking to one of players and they mentioned Club Finders. And I was like, I know that place. I haven't been there. And He's like, Yeah, I'm gonna get some new shafts. I'm gonna have them pull these, then I'll get something from them. I'm like, wait, what? And he's like, Yeah, I'll just pull my shafts and give it to them. I'm like, they take shafts. And he's like, Yeah. And I was like, Ooh, okay. So I raided my garage like a couple days ago when I got home, started pulling out boxes of old shafts. Like in and you okay, so you know how the diameter of a shaft. I literally had enough. It was this Alex: We're saying shaft a lot. I'm getting really confused on what shaft we're talking about here. Marcus: Yeah, let's sleep shafts. Jason: Golf golf shafts. Personal golf. Alex: Okay, so Jason: No. so I just went through all the boxes and I just like, ooh, I have this one, I have this one. And of course, I only took like ones that would probably give me a bigger ticket. So by the when I was done, I was telling Mars, like, literally I my hand would have to wrap around this much. Like, so think about your face covered with shafts between Marcus: Yeah, your face with shafts. Alex: Why Jason: Yeah. Yes. Alex: why do you have so many shafts lying around? Jason: That's what I was like that's what I'm saying, like 'cause Marcus: That's what makes it so great. Alex: Uh-uh. Jason: over the years, like I had stuff like from ten years ago, and either it's a one that was a OEM from a g something I bought and I was like, I don't like it, or I wasn't gonna intend on using it. So I just tried it in a box, another one, dropped in a box, and then of course went through a bunch of experimental shafts stuff that I bought off eBay. And of course, you can never just get rid of shafts until I I didn't know that. And so it just Alex: No. Jason: So, anyways, I've got all this stuff. And then some old putters. Like, literally, it's just like I got all this crap in my garage. I want to get rid of it. So I just take it down to Club Finders. I just walk in with this freaking massive stuff. Like a couple putters, just a bunch of mostly all golf shafts. I had no other clubs to sell. I just dropped it on their counter. I said, What can you do for me? And he's like, Well, we can give you store credit. I was like, okay, that's fine. I mean, I just I just want him out of house. I'm good. I'm sure I can find something. So I give him whatever time and then I go back and he's like, Hey, got your stuff ready. Fifteen hundred dollars of store credit. Alex: What? Jason: He Marcus: Hehehehehe Jason: So I'm like, so then I asked Marcus, I go, I love where I'm at kind of out with my clubs. Do I just buy something that's kind of nostalgic and something I kind of want but not play? Or do I just sit on it? Like, what do I do? Because I'm kind of locked in now with their store for 1500 bucks. Not to mention if I go get fit, I would sell the bets. Then that gives me more credit I would put towards them. Like Alex: So what you get? Jason: I haven't got nothing. I just Marcus: Nothing yet. We were just talking it through. Alex: it's Jason: Just talk No. Mm-mm. They just Alex: it's not same day same day use of store credit? that's nice. Jason: put it on a gift card. Yeah. I asked him that. I go, wait, do I need to use this now or whatever? He's no, you can use whatever. I'm like, thank God. Because I'm like, I have no idea what I'm do. Alex: Yeah, so let's Jason: Marcus had a good idea, but let's see what your thoughts are. Marcus: Yeah, Alex: Well, my first my first thought is why the hell do you have fifteen hundred dollars worth of used credit on chefs? Jason: I didn't know. Alex: That means they're like three times that for you to purchase them. Like that's why do you have so many shafts? Marcus: No, that's not what Jason: no. Alex: Why do you have so many shafts? Like why? I dude, I am looking at my excess bag right Jason: I don't Marcus: You know he was a headcase. Alex: now. I am looking at my bag of extra stuff right now, and I have four shafts. Four. And that is from two of them are from my seven wood and my mini drop three of them. All three of them are from the metals that come with a stock shaft that I put a custom shaft in. And if I go trade those in, I switch the shaft out. So I I don't accumulate an extra shaft. So I'm very confused how you have accumulated this many shafts. Jason: That's what I was thinking. I was like, how did I f I just kept finding them, finding them and then, you know, then because I would buy some off eBay. So it just straight come in. And so I have like the one that's in the current wood plus the OEM that came with it that I didn't use. And I'm trying a different shaft that I bought super cheap off eBay. So it's just a slow accumulation over the last like 10 to 12 years. I can't believe they actually still took some of the ones I had. Alex: Death by a thousand cuts. Jason: Yeah. I can't believe I well, a cup okay, the bundle also included a set of iron shafts that were pulled. So it was like seven iron shafts from my old like calloway set. Alex: Yeah, that that's honestly the only thing that semi-makes sense is the irons, because you're obviously not going to put them back in if you trade your irons and Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: so you do end up accumulating shafts. That one I can understand, but having Jason: So the so the overall bundle did include seven iron shafts. Alex: Yeah, but seven iron shafts is like that, not this. Jason: Right. It was like I was grabbing like okay, well Marcus: You Alex: A gym. Jason: then there was two putters, so they were kinda taking up the volume. So if we were to break it down maybe not even that big, but it was still a Alex: In quantity, how Marcus: Two-handed. Alex: many shafts is this? Like over under, Jason: I am I c I couldn't tell ya. Alex: is it like 50 plus shafts? 25? Jason: gosh, no no So there was seven Marcus: I had to guess like 25. Jason: No, probably around fifteen. But they were but see they I I traded in like old Ventus. So I had some handful of old Ventus, which are still premiums and Mitsubishi's. So I I was giving them premium shafts. I wasn't like giving them like Project X stock shafts. But the guy just the guy just I was surprised. I was like thinking Alex: Maybe I need to go there. I got I got a couple of customs over there. Jason: maybe a few hundred bucks. And he came back with that. I was like, okay. Alex: That's like that's like last year. It's like Marcus: So that's the question. What do we do with this 1500? Alex: last year or what was that, Jason: Yes. Alex: eighteen months ago, when I went to PGA thinking and it was like two times points day or whatever like that on trade in. And next thing I know, I have Marcus: Yeah. Yeah. Jason: Yeah. Right. Alex: like nine hundred dollars to spend at PGA, and I was like, what the hell am I gonna do? Marcus: I Jason: Right. But you gotta yeah. Marcus: already told him, I already told him, if you don't change irons, you're leaving money on the table at this point. Alex: you don't have to change irons. I mean, okay, let's I guess we can talk through this. Marcus: Yes. What would you do? Alex: What do you want to do? Like what Jason: That's what Alex: are where do you think you're missing the most right now? What what's it you you have your driver, you have a mini driver, you have five Jason: Well that's that's the c that's the conundrum. Yeah. Alex: wood. Jason: Mm-hmm. Seven wood. Alex: And seven wood? Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: Well, I mean, the very first thing I would do is just go get fit with Colin or whoever and figure out irons. Because I'm with Marcus, like I think you are leaving money on the table because custom irons, you're gonna Jason: Mm-hmm. yeah. Marcus: Yes. Alex: be like if you don't well, I'm only saying you're gonna leave money on the table if you don't need all of your top clubs. Cause you can go buy driver, mini driver seven wood for fifteen hundred dollars. And that's a pretty good Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: setup there. You could also go do a wedge and a putter fitting. And three wedges is going to cost you 900 bucks. And a putter is going Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: to be another, you know, four or five hundred. If you do machine, that's a five-six Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: hundred putter. granted, you have to buy it there, so don't know if they have machine. so I think unless you're doing a full top or a full bottom, including wedges. Iron is obviously by common sense the only thing left. But in my opinion, that's the last thing. Like if you're asking me, that's the last thing I change is my irons. I'm gonna go with wedges and putter, because that's where all of your scoring comes from. Jason: True, but Alex: Have you ever done a wedge fitting? Jason: a minor one years ago. so that's something to consider. I don't know if it's just the loft or spin or what head. So I know there's some there's some room for air there. Grind. Alex: Well it's also grind. If you go, they'll they'll look at Law Fly and the type of grind you need, the type of golf you play, and we all know that you're gonna end up getting a new putter within the next twelve months, regardless of what we say. So you might you might as well just Jason: it's gonna happen. I'm gonna tell I'm gonna tell you right now, I'm treating myself to my fiftieth and I'm buying a new putter. So that that's gonna happen. Marcus: There it is. Alex: So why not just why not just use all of this? You like I thought liked your Bettonardis. Jason: I d that's okay, that's the conundrum. Like the last time I played, I loved them. They were great. So I'm like in this weird hole because I really don't want to mess with the bets and Alex: Didn't you just change the shafts on those after talking with Colin? Jason: Calling. Yeah. Yeah. So that's why I'm like, I don't know what to do. I've Marcus: You Jason: got all this credit. So I could do a wedge deal because that would not be a waste. I my driver's pretty solid. I'm hitting it the best I've hit it with the driver on normal average, and then the mini's fine. The five wood is like not leaving my bag anytime soon. So it's kind of like Alex: Would you do would you do hybrids after the five wood or seven wood? Jason: So that is a question. It's like, do I do a five hybrid or do I just play around with maybe not using a seven wood and putting something else in with like on those windy days that we get, just kind of change up gear a little bit based on our conditions since I've got this free money? It's kind of like a weird weird spot. It's like what the heck am I gonna do? Alex: Yeah, 'cause I mean to Marx's point, whatever you trade out, unless you're gonna keep it, you're also gonna get a credit on that too. So I mean Jason: Mm-hmm. Well, Marcus: Mm-hmm Jason: if I do okay, so if I do wedges, I wouldn't trade those because those are custom stamped. So those would those are personalized. Alex: Yeah, those you wouldn't. But the irons you would. And you'd probably get another Jason: Yes. Alex: if I had to guess four or five hundred bucks from a set of irons. Jason: Right. So let's say if I do that, that puts me up two grand, which would be a nice full set of custom irons. Alex: In theory, you could do custom irons and a putter for two grand. And Jason: Mm-hmm. Alex: at most you might be a couple hundred bucks out of pocket, like if it doesn't pencil. But you got a whole new set of irons and a new putter. Marcus: And then can also sell the putter you have. Alex: You can also sell the putter you have. All I'm saying is if you if you buy another putter and it's not Jason: On top of that, so that's just extra like Marcus: Yeah! Alex: a freaking broomstick, I'm gonna shove whatever putter you buy, you know where. Like Marcus: Yeah Jason: so you say I have to get a broomstick? Alex: you Yeah, one, 'cause I want to make fun of you relentlessly, and that's just the part of it. But two, because Jason: Okay, sure. Marcus: you Alex: we have talked about this, the best putting in your my friendship over what, eight years now? The best pudding I've ever seen you done is with the broomstick. Jason: True. Marcus: You should get fitted. Alex: I still remember it. It was old American. That round, we had it old American, because those are not easy greens. You that was some of the best Jason: Mm. Yeah. Alex: putting I've ever seen from you. I don't think you I'm sure you three putted, but we probably both did. But from a Jason: I'm sure Alex: just a putt like a pace control, you were within two foot tappins the entire day it felt like. Jason: Yeah, it I mean, and even when we played, I mean we've played a couple like other places too, but I mean for sure it's definitely has made it made a difference. But again, it was big, it was cumbersome, like kinda like I don't know. Alex: Yeah, well, I mean, you just had to carry two handfuls worth of shafts somewhere. So I think you can handle big and cumbersome. I think we're okay. Marcus: the Jason: I yeah, I think we're okay there too. Shelby's okay with it. Alex: All right. Marcus: So funny. Alex: so I think Jason: But Alex: you asked my opinion. I think you need to go talk to Colin because he Jason: Yeah, so where do you which direction I should go? Alex: Colin knows your game and you let Colin tell you what to do from there. Marcus: I did recommend that Alex: Or just text them. Marcus: yeah Jason: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Alex: He was actually over at the house last night. Marcus: I also recommended that he just find someone to give him a thousand for that fifteen hundred in credit and he can go buy like some really nice boots. Like really nice boots. That was my other thought. Alex: That that's also not a bad not a bad idea. I mean you can go buy some really nice boots Marcus: I Alex: and a cowboy hat for that. Marcus: you get some Lou Casey's for, yeah, Lou Casey's about 800, 900 bucks. I mean, you're in. Jason: Well, okay, I I watched that video you sent with the the different layers, which you know makes sense with even regular tennis shoes and other things, you know, how they design them, how they build and how blackjack sits here, Tacobas are Marcus: Mm-hmm. Jason: here, and everything else goes from in between, and the different materials. So yeah, I mean it makes sense, but yeah, I think I'm just gonna have to like sit on it and just kinda like go, Hey, like you said, Colin. Let's let me come in again. Let's kinda work on a few things, see where you think I need the most help or where to benefit, which in his mind it'd probably be the irons. just because that's the one area that I just because I don't have forgiving irons. Like I got muscle backs and the cavity back, so more than likely that's probably the direction he would say, which I'm fine with. Like he gets like spec me out and like I could go back to Club Finders and just be like, Hey, this is what I wanna order. Here's my stuff and I go from there. So yeah. Marcus: Yeah, I didn't even think about the wedges but that Yeah Jason: Yeah, that he did make a good point there too. Marcus: matter even you know irons in a putter, which you're probably Gonna buy a putter anyway, so Yeah Yeah Jason: I already am I already got I already got it picked out. It's a special like kind of nostalgic type putter. I don't even Marcus: Yeah. Jason: know if I'd game it. It just it's something like I want it. Like it's just that simple. I want it. but I don't know. I've been using my old blade putter for a while and I've actually been rolling it really well. So that's why I'm like, I don't know if I want to go back to a broomstick. So Marcus: Yeah. Jason: it's it's gonna be tough. Luckily there's no expiration on this thing, so it'll be good. Marcus: Yeah, well as long as they don't go out of business. Jason: I don't gosh, they've been there for a while, so I don't think they're gonna disappear, but Marcus: Yeah. Alex: Don't think sorry. My like it randomly just like kicks me off. Like I'm perfectly fine and then it's so what's gonna disappear? Marcus: he's... Jason: the club the store, 'cause there was no expiration on the card, so like I'll just sit on it for a little bit and just kinda Alex: yeah, that would suck. Marcus: Yeah, was like, as long as I don't go out of business, you're good. Alex: no, I'm I'm I'm I'm kind of with Marcus here. I mean, you could find someone to buy this off you, go buy a six, seven, eight hundred dollar pair of boots, and then we will go to the outlet store for resist all and go buy you a nice hat. Jason: Yeah. Marcus: And you can still buy your putter that's out of pocket though Jason: Yeah, I don't know. I'll still be e eating that one. Marcus: Yeah, you're gonna do it anyway, so it doesn't matter you're good Jason: That that's I told you like that putter for my 50th is gonna happen. That that's my my gift to me. Whether I use it again, it's like I that's my gift. But yeah, the boots thing, it's it's kind of like maybe I go see Colin, lesson, dial it in, and then if the numbers are still solid where he's like, You really you could, but okay, then Stay with the irons and then like Alex you said, maybe try wedges. Try some different configurations and see what will help with my angle of attack. Obviously the conditions we play in might change it up. Alex: Yeah, we'll talk to him. him and I are actually playing together on Friday. Jason: nice. Westridge or Alex: Taking a day off work. Yeah, we him and I talked about trying to like drive somewhere and go play, but he needs to play first thing in the morning. And I can't play like first thing in the morning unless it's local to the house because I got to take trip to school and can't drop him off till you know 7 15. I was trying, we were trying to talk. We actually talked about Cedar Crest down in Dallas. We talked about maybe going out to Fort Worth or Rockwall, Jason: Mm. Alex: but that would be like a 10 o'clock tea time with Just to wait out the morning traffic. So Marcus: Hmm. Jason: Mm. Alex: yeah, we're we're gonna play. But yeah, he was over here yesterday and we were chipping in the backyard and doing all the fun stuff and talking. So yeah, just reach out to him and then him and I will make fun of you relentlessly on Friday behind your back. Jason: you could you're gonna do that anyways, no matter what I do. Marcus: Just so funny, he just put himself in this Alex: I would never Marcus: situation. It's just hilarious. Alex: You know, the worst part is like you know he's at the store Jason: I mean I could have gone through the whole process of s Alex: thinking I was just you he's at the store just like Jason: Me or Colin? Alex: hating that he's gonna be telling us about this situation. And Marcus: Yeah, he's Jason: Yeah. Marcus: already having that conversation in his own head. Jason: the conversation, I mean, stuff spiraling and I'm like, okay, Alex: Yeah, yeah. Jason: hit the brakes. Let's hit the brakes. Let's talk. Let's get some feedback. Let's see where what I can do instead of just doing something stupid and impulsive. Alex: It it's like when Marcus was on that binge of buying guns and it's like you know he's thinking in his head, That's really gonna suck telling these guys I got another one. Jason: Yeah. Marcus: I've been good for Jason: Yeah. Marcus: a while now. I've been good. Jason: Yeah. I haven't done anything yet, but I was telling yeah, Marcus is like I haven't been over at IGP in months, so it may not be a good may not be a bad idea to go get another lesson, kind of polish up some more and kinda see where everything's at. Alex: Yeah, absolutely. I I need to go. Jason: And then let them decide. Alex: you on our agenda we had talking about, you know, constraints, base learning. Man, I gotta get up there. I'm gonna try to go tomorrow morning if I don't sleep through my alarm again. 'Cause I haven't played since my Fields Ranch round what mid August. So five, six weeks now. Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: I haven't even touched my clubs. They've just been the back of the truck. So I need to go swing some swing some clubs and Shake off the rust before Friday playing with Colin. Jason: Mm-hmm. for sure. Are you guys still doing your weekly workouts? Alex: We haven't been. I need to just move some days around and now he's got stuff going on because it's we have we literally have someone every night of the week. And like when Grayson has a 745 baseball game, we don't get home till 10, 1030. By the time we get kids asleep and we've eaten something, Jason: Yourself, yeah. Alex: it's it's midnight, maybe 12 30 ish by the time we're in bed. There's no chance I'm waking up at 4 30. Like that I told him, I was like, there's So the only day that really Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: works for me are Wednesdays because we have nothing on Tuesdays. and it's a long day for me Wednesday if I do that because we have baseball practice until 9 30 at night. But I'd rather a long day than working on four hours of sleep and he can't make Wednesdays work. So we're gonna I think he said he's gonna try to do Mondays. So we'll see. If not, I'm gonna try to go myself because I gotta get back in the gym and I've gotta hit some balls. Jason: Yeah. Same. All right. We could talk about constraints and stuff another time. I got dinner on the table. Alex: Sounds good. Well boys, I appreciate appreciate y'all pivoting for me. Sorry I slept in on you. But some exciting news. after long awaited three months. Fields Ranch video is coming out this Friday at noon central time. so everyone make sure that's on your your radar will be on YouTube. It's a fun one. And hopefully next week or week after, we will have Andrew and Gary, who are the two other guys, on the podcast with us, and we'll talk through we'll talk through that round. but it's a good one. tune into it. As always, new episodes every Wednesday. And we can go ahead and thank Jason for being a mental head case to give us content to talk about, and Marcus for being our producer. We're glad to have him back because I did Jason: Hey. Alex: not like fact checking last week. Jason: Hey, I we gotta stir up drama. We gotta figure out some other way to kind of just kind of screw with it. We're gonna gotta shift to a little bit more reality TV style. Just kind of start screwing with people. Alex: Hmm. Yeah, Marcus, I'm gonna need you to work on Marcus: You can yell at me, Alex. Alex: I'm gonna need you to work on your camera skills when you film us to get those close ups. You know, maybe some interviews mid round to to stir up the drama. Marcus: up close. Alex: no. We we gotta Marcus: Yeah. Alex: get on that, getting ready for my Netflix documentary, but it could be Jason: I suppose tell him Marcus. Alex: about how I sent three balls out of bounds one after the other. Jason: Yeah. Marcus: Yeah, so he just dropped one out of his pocket. He wasn't even in the fairway Alex: You know Jason: So I tell Mark is like we we gotta do create some kind of something on the on our videos. Marcus: Yeah, it's like now we're just normal dudes. Alex: Yeah, we gotta figure out what the next video we gotta figure out what the next video is in Jason: Yeah. Alex: general. we gotta at least like try to get one a quarter or something. Be a little more be a little more fluid there. But all right, boys, I know you gotta get to dinner. I gotta get to dinner. appreciate y'all pivoting Marcus: Mm-hmm. Alex: and we'll talk next week. Jason: All right. Talk to you later. Marcus: All right, see ya.
