- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining us now from development camp is defenseman and prospect
- 0:02Speaker 1: Chase Reid as well. First off, a formal welcome on
- 0:05Speaker 1: the grounds here to Seattle and your takeaways here with
- 0:08Speaker 1: what are they?
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean obviously getting to step on the ice
- 0:10Speaker 2: and all the NHL gear. It's it's a dream to
- 0:12Speaker 2: be able to put on the gear and be able
- 0:14Speaker 2: to wear that jersey out here and just play alongside
- 0:16Speaker 2: some of the best players in the world.
- 0:18Speaker 3: It's a true honor.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Are a few days in the rearview mirror enough to
- 0:21Speaker 1: process and understand what that night being drafted meant to
- 0:25Speaker 1: you and what it felt like as well?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean obviously being drafted here. He couldn't have
- 0:30Speaker 2: asked for a better place to come to. Everybody's been
- 0:31Speaker 2: super welcoming. It's been nothing but a great experience so far,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and I can't wait for the rest of the week
- 0:35Speaker 2: and then eventually, hopefully the rest of my career.
- 0:37Speaker 1: What was your one takeaway from that draft band as
- 0:39Speaker 1: far as what you'll remember.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah, obviously giving my mom and dad and brother a hug.
- 0:43Speaker 3: I think just being able to.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Show, especially kids all over the world, that no matter
- 0:47Speaker 2: what life throws in your face, it doesn't.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Matter, and you can always accomplish what you want to accomplish.
- 0:51Speaker 2: And then obviously for my little brother, he's fourteen, so
- 0:54Speaker 2: showing him that anything's possible and that it doesn't matter
- 0:57Speaker 2: what happens in life, you can always do what your
- 0:59Speaker 2: dream is.
- 1:00Speaker 1: There are plenty of qualities that make this a pretty
- 1:02Speaker 1: special place, whether it might be the environment, the fan base,
- 1:05Speaker 1: what you have as far as a practice facility in
- 1:07Speaker 1: the arena. But what did you notice so far as
- 1:10Speaker 1: far as what blew you away or what you took
- 1:11Speaker 1: away here from your first visit to Seattle?
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously, I mean I saw the houses in the
- 1:15Speaker 2: hills the first night driving in from the airport.
- 1:18Speaker 3: That was pretty cool.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And then obviously going and seeing the game rink last
- 1:21Speaker 2: night and seeing the locker room and just being in
- 1:23Speaker 2: that environment, seeing all of the opportunities that they have
- 1:26Speaker 2: over there.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I couldn't have asked for a better place.
- 1:28Speaker 2: To come to.
- 1:29Speaker 1: You shared your story before when it comes to adversity
- 1:32Speaker 1: at the USHL level, going down for a bit and
- 1:35Speaker 1: making your way back up now to being a first
- 1:37Speaker 1: round NHL draft pick. But as far as your overall game,
- 1:39Speaker 1: how better do you feel as a player now versus.
- 1:42Speaker 3: One year ago.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously, I think just everything came together in the
- 1:45Speaker 2: perfect way at the perfect time it did. And obviously
- 1:48Speaker 2: the Greyhounds giving me the opportunity to go play there,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and Michigan State giving me the opportunity to commit there,
- 1:52Speaker 2: and them.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Believing in me.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Even when I got sent down to the North American League.
- 1:55Speaker 2: It was I've had a pretty rough path, but I
- 1:58Speaker 2: mean people have believed in me, and I'm proving all
- 2:01Speaker 2: the all the people wrong and proving them right for
- 2:03Speaker 2: choosing me.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So we asked other players about this as far as
- 2:06Speaker 1: guys they've seen in the OHL. I'll throw a couple
- 2:08Speaker 1: of names out to you, Jacobrien, Nathan Villeneuve. Your takeaways
- 2:12Speaker 1: with them on the ice in the same leak from
- 2:13Speaker 1: this last.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Year, really obviously playing with playing against them this past season,
- 2:18Speaker 2: and then obviously getting to step on the ice with them.
- 2:19Speaker 3: They're super hard to play against, obviously, but.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Being able to play alongside them, it's gonna be it's
- 2:24Speaker 2: gonna be a lot better to be able to play
- 2:25Speaker 2: alongside good players like them, and then obviously set them
- 2:28Speaker 2: up with the puck as well.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Chirping how much do you kind of account for that
- 2:32Speaker 1: facing a guy like Billanove.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he's a pretty funny guy all around.
- 2:36Speaker 2: So on the ice and he was in Windsor, I
- 2:38Speaker 2: definitely we didn't chirp each other too much.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I didn't. I didn't really want to mess with them.
- 2:42Speaker 2: He seemed seemed like a pretty pretty good fighter, so
- 2:45Speaker 2: I didn't really want to mess with him too much.
- 2:46Speaker 2: But I'd give it to him a little bit out
- 2:48Speaker 2: there and he'd give it back and then we'd be
- 2:49Speaker 2: fined after.
- 2:50Speaker 1: So then night before development can't be took in a
- 2:52Speaker 1: Mariners game and throughout the ceremonial first pitch, What was
- 2:55Speaker 1: your experience like and had your preparel also to take
- 2:58Speaker 1: them bound that night?
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah, going up there, I was more nervous to walk
- 3:01Speaker 2: to the mound than I was to actually throw the pitch.
- 3:03Speaker 2: But it was a huge honor obviously the Mariners giving
- 3:06Speaker 2: me that chance to go out there in the crack
- 3:07Speaker 2: and as well was I was a little nervous to
- 3:09Speaker 2: throw it, thought I was going to miss the play,
- 3:11Speaker 2: but threw right down the middle. And then obviously Josh
- 3:13Speaker 2: catching the ball and sending me that video was super.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Cool as well.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It was also a big hockey guy as well too.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, he was super pumped and he just he
- 3:20Speaker 3: had nothing but good things to say.
- 3:21Speaker 1: How much baseball do you have in your background.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I played baseball a little bit growing up. I was
- 3:25Speaker 2: a catcher, and yeah, that's it's about all I got.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I wasn't the best hitter, though, so we stuck to catching.
- 3:29Speaker 1: But yet, how much did baseball kind of help you
- 3:32Speaker 1: develop your game as a hockey player.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think it just gave me something
- 3:35Speaker 2: to do in the summertime when I wasn't playing hockey.
- 3:38Speaker 3: I go to the gym, train and then baseball practice
- 3:40Speaker 3: at night. So it was super good.
- 3:42Speaker 2: And I mean eventually, at some point you got to
- 3:43Speaker 2: cut off the two sports. So I did that about
- 3:45Speaker 2: two years ago, and I mean it's done nothing but
- 3:48Speaker 2: the best.
- 3:49Speaker 1: How beneficial is it for kids to grow up and
- 3:51Speaker 1: play multiple sports?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think just being able to do anything just
- 3:55Speaker 2: away from hockey. You playing hockey all winter, all year round,
- 3:58Speaker 2: so anytime you can get away from it, whether that's golf, baseball,
- 4:01Speaker 2: it's always good to take a little time away from
- 4:02Speaker 2: the rink and place to play another sport or hang
- 4:05Speaker 2: out with your family.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Just do get your mind off hockey for a little bit.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Now you mentioned golf as well. What's the lowest round
- 4:10Speaker 1: up that you've ever shot on eighteen?
- 4:13Speaker 3: I think I shot seventy one, so one under where.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I mean, that's that's not great.
- 4:18Speaker 1: The middle irons felt felt pretty good that day.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Didn't they.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah, they were there. They were striping them out there.
- 4:22Speaker 1: If you could name your ideal PGA Tour four some
- 4:25Speaker 1: pick three guys that you want to play with, who
- 4:27Speaker 1: are they?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Scheffler, Tiger Woods, And I'm gonna say John Ram. He's
- 4:34Speaker 2: Scott to hitts Wall pretty far and he's won the
- 4:36Speaker 2: us O or the what are the Masters?
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so that was pretty cool.
- 4:40Speaker 2: And then obviously John Ron being on live Tour, I
- 4:45Speaker 2: went and saw him live play.
- 4:46Speaker 3: At in Michigan.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And then obviously Tiger Woods went in the green jacket
- 4:49Speaker 2: as well, so multiple times.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So I think it would just be pretty cool. And
- 4:52Speaker 3: I mean I don't really I wouldn't have a chance
- 4:54Speaker 3: against them, but.
- 4:55Speaker 1: It'd be pretty cool. Rounding this out here. Back to
- 4:57Speaker 1: the on I stuff, what do you call a successful
- 5:00Speaker 1: season this this next year at Michigan State.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I think just running out my game in every
- 5:04Speaker 2: way and making sure that Seattle knows that I'm ready
- 5:06Speaker 2: to come in the following year and be there.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Go to guys, what kind of player do you want
- 5:09Speaker 1: to be in five years?
- 5:10Speaker 2: I want to be the I mean, I want to
- 5:11Speaker 2: be the offensive guy that definitely keeps pucks out of
- 5:14Speaker 2: the back of my net as we also a two
- 5:16Speaker 2: way defenseman, loves having the puck on my stick, loves
- 5:19Speaker 2: to carry the play. And I want to be the
- 5:20Speaker 2: I want to be the guy here in Seattle and
- 5:22Speaker 2: all the fans to be behind me and my teammates
- 5:24Speaker 2: to push me each and every day.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Now, you might be closer here to a pro lifestyle
- 5:27Speaker 1: and NHL lifestyle here, but to the OHL from what
- 5:30Speaker 1: you came out of has a lot of long, grouling
- 5:32Speaker 1: bus rides. Like a lot of guys experience in major Junior.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The toughest bus ride that you sat through in your
- 5:37Speaker 1: OHL career, what was it?
- 5:39Speaker 2: London was pretty far. That was like eight and a
- 5:41Speaker 2: half hours. Kitchener is probably ten Yeah, probably Kitchener during
- 5:48Speaker 2: playoffs that was like ten hours long.
- 5:49Speaker 3: So that was a that was a half d ride.
- 5:52Speaker 1: But what's the one thing that you can't live with
- 5:54Speaker 1: that on a bus.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Then definitely my phone or some gummy bears. Can't I
- 5:59Speaker 2: get agree on the bus so either my phone, oh
- 6:02Speaker 2: definitely headphones. Yeah yeah, those are probably the three main
- 6:05Speaker 2: things candy, my phone and headphones.
- 6:07Speaker 1: No, it's canceling. The bigger, the better, right. Oh yeah,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I appreciate this, Chase, Welcome to Seattle. Appreciate you again.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Thank you,
