- 1:26Speaker 5: being with us on this Tuesday edition. This portion of
- 1:29Speaker 5: the program brought to you by Radio Dentistry. We have
- 1:32Speaker 5: slapped together what I think is our second good show
- 1:36Speaker 5: of the week, and it's only Tuesday. That doesn't bode
- 1:39Speaker 5: well for the rest of the week. But hey, what
- 1:41Speaker 5: are you going to do? Coming up? Part two, Phil Steele.
- 1:45Speaker 5: We talk SEC today with the guru of college football.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Day two SEC preview the Kentucky Wildcats. Also a special
- 1:59Speaker 5: guests in studio with a special event coming up tomorrow
- 2:03Speaker 5: in our community. Also second hour Mike Elko He met
- 2:08Speaker 5: with the media today, answer questions players reported today. Practice
- 2:13Speaker 5: begins tomorrow evening, and we have a best of Mallory
- 2:18Speaker 5: for you on today's date thirty three years ago, nineteen
- 2:27Speaker 5: ninety three by my richardson High Math. Robin Ventura made
- 2:34Speaker 5: the terrible mistake of charging Nolan Ryan on the mound
- 2:39Speaker 5: after he was hit by a pitch, and the rest,
- 2:43Speaker 5: as they say, is history. The old man beat up
- 2:47Speaker 5: the young kid and what you might not remember, and
- 2:50Speaker 5: I didn't either until I saw the video again today.
- 2:55Speaker 5: After the fight was over, and it wasn't much of
- 2:58Speaker 5: a fight, Ventura took first base and was promptly picked
- 3:05Speaker 5: off by Pudge Rodriguez the first pitch of the next batter.
- 3:10Speaker 5: It was not a good few minutes for Robin Ventura.
- 3:17Speaker 5: That video has been shown I think on Ranger High
- 3:22Speaker 5: on the highlight board at the stadium forever. When we
- 3:27Speaker 5: talked about the book Nolan, we talked about the fact
- 3:34Speaker 5: that they reportedly met when Ventura was the manager Nolan
- 3:43Speaker 5: was the president of the Rangers. Had a brief meeting.
- 3:48Speaker 5: I don't want to say cleared the air, but I'm
- 3:50Speaker 5: not sure they had spoken since that night, and it
- 3:54Speaker 5: just kept on and on and on. I think both
- 3:58Speaker 5: men wanted put it behind him, more so Ventura for sure.
- 4:03Speaker 5: That was thirty three years ago. Good gosh, hard to believe.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Nolan was like one hundred and seven then. By the way,
- 4:15Speaker 5: I think I mentioned yesterday two time World Series champs
- 4:19Speaker 5: Scott Spiezio he's going to be with us tomorrow. His
- 4:23Speaker 5: story of addiction, recovery, redemption in a new book he's
- 4:27Speaker 5: written called The Hardest Comeback, along with a documentary film. Spezio,
- 4:34Speaker 5: we will visit with Scott Spiezio tomorrow on the program. Okay,
- 4:41Speaker 5: all right. Elko met with the media. As I mentioned today,
- 4:47Speaker 5: a couple of players together, Mark Nebeu, Dalton Brooks Mike
- 4:52Speaker 5: Andreilly were also around. Elko did say that it appears
- 5:00Speaker 5: linebacker Damian Sandford will be ready to go by the
- 5:05Speaker 5: season opener. Elko said, I don't think we'll have anybody
- 5:10Speaker 5: missed the first day of camp. Sanford is among those
- 5:14Speaker 5: building up in practice. There are some markers and steps
- 5:19Speaker 5: he has to go through, but he is on course
- 5:24Speaker 5: to be ready for the season opener. That's great news
- 5:27Speaker 5: for Mike Elko and the defense. Linebacker is a position
- 5:33Speaker 5: of need this season, and they need him. So the
- 5:38Speaker 5: Coach's poll is out, the first poll of the year,
- 5:43Speaker 5: so you know we're getting close. Aggie's are eight. Let's
- 5:51Speaker 5: go from bottom to top. Missouri twenty five, Houston twenty four,
- 5:57Speaker 5: Clemson twenty three, Iowa, Utah SMU at twenty. I think
- 6:04Speaker 5: they're under sold there, Washington, Tennessee over sold, Penn State,
- 6:12Speaker 5: Michigan over sold at sixteen. Although I do like the coach,
- 6:17Speaker 5: I will say that BYU fifteen, USC fourteen too high,
- 6:22Speaker 5: LSU thirteen, Tech twelve probably too low. Alabama eleven, oh
- 6:31Speaker 5: Miss ten, then Oklahoma at nine, A and m at eight,
- 6:37Speaker 5: Miami seven, Indiana at six. The Hoosiers got fourteen first
- 6:43Speaker 5: place votes. By the way, there are two points behind
- 6:47Speaker 5: Notre Dame at five, Texas at four, Georgia at three,
- 6:53Speaker 5: Oregon at two, and the Buckeyes of Ohio State sitting
- 6:59Speaker 5: at number one. Again, this is the coach's poll. The
- 7:06Speaker 5: Texas Rangers may or may not have hit rock bottom
- 7:10Speaker 5: last night. Ranger fans can only hope this team committed
- 7:16Speaker 5: five count them five errors in a five to one
- 7:21Speaker 5: loss to a brutal San Francisco Giants team, two errors
- 7:27Speaker 5: in the first inning that led to two runs five
- 7:31Speaker 5: to one the final six straight losses. This is after
- 7:38Speaker 5: the team decided only to trade Josh Smith and keep
- 7:44Speaker 5: everybody and so the team promptly thanked Chris Young and
- 7:54Speaker 5: the front office for keeping everyone together by losing and
- 7:58Speaker 5: committing five I say five errors that is hard to
- 8:06Speaker 5: do in a major league game. McKenzie gore on the
- 8:10Speaker 5: mound tonight for the Rangers. Played tidwell for the Giants. Newbie.
- 8:20Speaker 5: We'll see what happens again. They have lost six in
- 8:24Speaker 5: a row. They did get a little help from the
- 8:27Speaker 5: Astros last night, who lost to the Blue Jays three
- 8:33Speaker 5: to one at Dykin Park. Shane Bieber with a really
- 8:39Speaker 5: nice outing. By the way. Right before the deadline, the
- 8:45Speaker 5: Astros acquire outfielder Dalton var Show from Toronto in exchange
- 8:53Speaker 5: for Spencer Irraghetti. Even though the Astros needed a starter,
- 9:00Speaker 5: they gave up a starter who was great early but
- 9:04Speaker 5: has not been great lately. Arraghetti. Var Show hitting two
- 9:12Speaker 5: forty three nineteen doubles, seven homers, twenty six RBI for
- 9:18Speaker 5: the Blue Jays former gold Glover. They will play again tonight.
- 9:24Speaker 5: You can hear the broadcast here on the Zone beginning
- 9:27Speaker 5: at six forty Hayden was Nesky pitching his second major
- 9:34Speaker 5: league start in his return for tom from Tommy John
- 9:39Speaker 5: surgery against Trey you Savage of the Blue Jays. Again.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Astros still in first two games over five hundred in
- 9:51Speaker 5: the dreadful Al West. We'll see what happens from there,
- 10:00Speaker 5: and the bookie for Epei Musahara, who was Shohei Otani's
- 10:06Speaker 5: interpreter and got caught in the gambling scambal scandal, said
- 10:12Speaker 5: the Dodgers star showed signs of problem gambling within the
- 10:19Speaker 5: four I begg your part. Not O'tani, his interpreter showed
- 10:24Speaker 5: signs of gambling within thirty days of betting. He was
- 10:28Speaker 5: absolutely bananas, said Matthew Boyer in a new episode of
- 10:34Speaker 5: a show called The Betrayal of Show hey Atani. The
- 10:38Speaker 5: amount of bets he was making, he was trying to
- 10:41Speaker 5: dig out a hole. That hole made him even more
- 10:45Speaker 5: poor of a gambler because he's betting big payoff stuff.
- 10:51Speaker 5: US attorney who prosecuted miss Ohara's case told ESPN he
- 10:54Speaker 5: did not believe miss Ohara's actions could solely be explained
- 10:59Speaker 5: by gambling addiction. The attorney Estrada said, I'm not convinced
- 11:05Speaker 5: he was just a gambling addict and had no choice.
- 11:10Speaker 5: I think it's more he got this great opportunity and
- 11:14Speaker 5: then saw a bigger opportunity to enrich himself. He allegedly
- 11:20Speaker 5: stole more than seventeen million dollars from Otani. So wowsers
- 11:29Speaker 5: on that one. Okay, Scottland Dinnon will be with us tomorrow.
- 11:36Speaker 5: We will have our Clark Eisenhower Outdoor edition coming up
- 11:42Speaker 5: on Thursday. You know, I wasn't here during Shark Week.
- 11:47Speaker 5: We'll have to review Shark Week from last week. I
- 11:51Speaker 5: thought it was decent. It wasn't the best, but there
- 11:54Speaker 5: were some decent shows. Some of the entertainment stuff is
- 11:58Speaker 5: getting old, frankly, but you know, they've it for thirty years.
- 12:01Speaker 5: They're running out of ideas. But the actual scientific stuff
- 12:06Speaker 5: I still enjoy. We'll talk about that and then Friday,
- 12:10Speaker 5: Jared and Jason are in subbing for Ryan who subs
- 12:14Speaker 5: for me on Fridays. So we got that going for us,
- 12:19Speaker 5: which is nice. Okay, we're going to take a break.
- 12:24Speaker 5: We're going to come back. We're going to be joined
- 12:27Speaker 5: second day in a row by the Guru of college football,
- 12:31Speaker 5: Phil Steel. After this. For Chad Jones, law.
- 12:36Speaker 7: I'm Chad Jones. We know sports injuries hurt, and so
- 12:39Speaker 7: do injuries from car rex, but you didn't sign up
- 12:42Speaker 7: to being a carreck with someone who wasn't paying attention.
- 12:44Speaker 7: It was their fault and now you're left to deal
- 12:46Speaker 7: with the consequences. You need to see a doctor and
- 12:49Speaker 7: you're missing work. Chad Jones Law can help. We've been
- 12:51Speaker 7: helping our neighbors for more than two decades. Stop getting
- 12:54Speaker 7: frustrated with the other side's foot dragging. Remember, don't get mad.
- 12:58Speaker 7: Get Chad. Call Chadones Law at ninety seventy nine five
- 13:01Speaker 7: to ninety five five thousand, or go on line to
- 13:03Speaker 7: Chad Jones Lawn dot com.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Marty and McGee.
- 13:08Speaker 8: I think it was Clemson at Georgia Tech, and I'm
- 13:10Speaker 8: standing on the sideline and all of a sudden, the
- 13:12Speaker 8: producer is like, Marty, the game's yours. I'm like what
- 13:16Speaker 8: he was like, we lost the booth. So I was
- 13:18Speaker 8: standing on the sideline with a flip card trying to
- 13:21Speaker 8: come all this college football game and I'm like, it
- 13:24Speaker 8: was like that kid, that's like and the guy passes
- 13:27Speaker 8: to the guy and then the heat guys shoot, go
- 13:29Speaker 8: way down the top.
- 13:29Speaker 9: Bank Marty and McGee, Saturday Morning, sixty nine on the
- 13:34Speaker 9: eleven FF ninety three point seven FM.
- 13:37Speaker 4: You come on upo them slowly.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Rolling half down to me. Got chop joke up.
- 13:57Speaker 10: It just do what it please?
- 14:10Speaker 5: Welcome back, Glad to have you with us on a
- 14:13Speaker 5: Tuesday edition of the program. Phil Steele, the guru of
- 14:20Speaker 5: college football, was with us yesterday and we talked about
- 14:26Speaker 5: the national scene. And so today I'm going to play
- 14:34Speaker 5: an interview I was able to do with him last week,
- 14:39Speaker 5: and we're going to talk SEC and Texas A and
- 14:43Speaker 5: M today back for a second day, because one day
- 14:48Speaker 5: with Phil Steele is simply not enough. Phil Steele's College
- 14:52Speaker 5: Football magazine is out right now at Barnes and Noble
- 14:56Speaker 5: and Books a million. We talked about the other leagues
- 15:00Speaker 5: and the other top teams yesterday, Phil, but we went
- 15:03Speaker 5: a key in on the SEC. This league, Phil, I mean,
- 15:08Speaker 5: I don't know what's wrong with it. They haven't won
- 15:10Speaker 5: a national championship now in four years?
- 15:13Speaker 6: Yeah, four four SEC huh? And now you're playing nine
- 15:17Speaker 6: conference games. That is just rugged schedule wise. Take a
- 15:22Speaker 6: look at a team like Texas nine conference games and oh,
- 15:25Speaker 6: by the way, you play Ohio State in the non
- 15:27Speaker 6: conference and the two teams the other two teams that
- 15:30Speaker 6: Texas plays in the non conference this year, Texas State's
- 15:34Speaker 6: going to be one of the best teams in the
- 15:36Speaker 6: Pac twelve and UTSA is going to be one of
- 15:38Speaker 6: the best teams in the American.
- 15:40Speaker 5: And Phil, let's just look at how you have rated
- 15:45Speaker 5: some of them. You have Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Ole
- 15:51Speaker 5: miss A and m tied with Ole miss at fifth,
- 15:54Speaker 5: Tennessee seventh, tied with LSU. Let's start at the top,
- 15:59Speaker 5: because I mean, until somebody knocks these guys off, they're
- 16:04Speaker 5: still the king of the hill, the fighting Kirby smarts,
- 16:06Speaker 5: aren't they.
- 16:08Speaker 6: Yeah? And I watched four days SEC media days and
- 16:10Speaker 6: not a lot of talk about Georgia. Talk about a
- 16:13Speaker 6: lot of other schools, but Georgia and all Georgia is
- 16:16Speaker 6: is a much better team than they were last year,
- 16:18Speaker 6: and last year they were the SEC champs. Defensively, they
- 16:21Speaker 6: are loaded. They have got seven starters back on defense.
- 16:26Speaker 6: I rate their defensive line in the top ten linebackers
- 16:30Speaker 6: number five, dvs. Number three, and they go basically three
- 16:34Speaker 6: deep at every defensive unit, which is rare in the
- 16:37Speaker 6: transfer portal area. You look at their quarterback Gunner Stockton
- 16:41Speaker 6: really impressed me last year fourth down fourth quarter key games.
- 16:44Speaker 6: He had a sixteen to two ratio against ranked teams
- 16:48Speaker 6: last year. They've got one of the top offensive lines
- 16:50Speaker 6: in the country. I've rated at number seven. They've got
- 16:53Speaker 6: one of the best running back corps I've rate at
- 16:55Speaker 6: number six. Special teams I rate number five. Now they
- 16:58Speaker 6: do have to play both Alabama and Old Miss on
- 17:01Speaker 6: the road. This is a very dangerous Georgia team. I
- 17:03Speaker 6: ran him number two in the country. I have him
- 17:05Speaker 6: winning the SEC again and who knows, they may be
- 17:08Speaker 6: the team to stop this big ten streak of national
- 17:12Speaker 6: championships and finally get the SEC back in there.
- 17:15Speaker 5: So you have Texas at two. The good news for
- 17:18Speaker 5: Texas fill as they don't play Georgia in the regular
- 17:21Speaker 5: season this year. The bad news is you have them
- 17:24Speaker 5: as one of the toughest schedules in the country.
- 17:28Speaker 6: Yeah, as I touch on nine SEC games and three
- 17:31Speaker 6: tough non conference games. This is a loaded schedule for Texas.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Spot Their offense is going to be much better than
- 17:39Speaker 6: last year. If you watched arch Manning last year started
- 17:41Speaker 6: out slow, but remember he had an offensive line that
- 17:44Speaker 6: only had one returning starter. He is his top running
- 17:47Speaker 6: back last year at five hundred and ninety seven yards.
- 17:50Speaker 6: That's not a great supporting cast. Well, this year, their
- 17:53Speaker 6: offensive line rate in the top twenty. The running backs
- 17:56Speaker 6: they had in Hollywood Smothers FROMENCI State, a thousand yard rusher,
- 18:00Speaker 6: Releak Brown, a thousand yard rusher from Arizona State. They'll
- 18:03Speaker 6: have a better run game. They already had the explosive
- 18:06Speaker 6: Ryan Wingo. Just throw this guy a little screen pass,
- 18:09Speaker 6: take it the distance on the first play of the game.
- 18:12Speaker 6: And then they add in a cam Coleman, So now
- 18:15Speaker 6: you can't double team Wingo. And I thought arch Mannon
- 18:18Speaker 6: got better and better as the season went on. At
- 18:20Speaker 6: the end of the year, he's playing great ball. I've
- 18:22Speaker 6: got him the number two offense in the country at
- 18:24Speaker 6: the end of the year. Defensively, I've got the defensive line,
- 18:27Speaker 6: number four, linebackers, number three, the secondary solid And when
- 18:31Speaker 6: I talked to Sark about the squad, he felt pretty
- 18:34Speaker 6: confident about this group. So I think when you look
- 18:37Speaker 6: at Texas, they are a clear threat to Georgia this year.
- 18:40Speaker 6: And I don't have an underdog in any games this year. Chip,
- 18:44Speaker 6: I got a couple of toss ups on the schedule,
- 18:46Speaker 6: Oklahoma and Dallas and at Texas A and M. But
- 18:49Speaker 6: I think Texas is a great jot and they're over
- 18:51Speaker 6: under nine and a half. I'll take the over on
- 18:54Speaker 6: Texas this year.
- 18:55Speaker 5: So what do you think about the muss Champ factor
- 18:57Speaker 5: and the change a defensive coordinator.
- 19:00Speaker 6: I like to change a big mush Champ fan as
- 19:04Speaker 6: the defensive coordinator. Have always been a fan of his defenses,
- 19:07Speaker 6: and I think he's got great talent to work with.
- 19:10Speaker 6: Really like to pick up of Rashem Biles coming in
- 19:12Speaker 6: from Pitt an All American linebacker to go along with
- 19:15Speaker 6: Colin Simmons, your rush guy up front. Hero Canoe gives
- 19:20Speaker 6: you that size of the interior high level player as
- 19:24Speaker 6: somebody that turned down the NFL. And then in the
- 19:27Speaker 6: secondary you got a guy like Jolani McDonald who's going
- 19:30Speaker 6: to be an All American type of player this year.
- 19:32Speaker 6: This a loaded defense and must Champs a big plus.
- 19:35Speaker 5: So I don't know if I ever dreamed of a year,
- 19:39Speaker 5: Phil that you would have Alabama as a surprise team.
- 19:43Speaker 6: Yeah, neither did I. It's been since two thousand and
- 19:46Speaker 6: five since the and to be a surprise team, Chip,
- 19:49Speaker 6: just to clarify, you have to not be in the
- 19:51Speaker 6: preseason top ten. Well, not only is Alabama not gonna
- 19:54Speaker 6: be in a preseason top ten, they were picked sixth
- 19:57Speaker 6: in the SEC this year, sixth the last time you
- 20:00Speaker 6: ever heard of that. But I think they're under the radar.
- 20:03Speaker 6: I thought the way they finished last year is the
- 20:05Speaker 6: reason they were picked six. Remember they got blown out
- 20:07Speaker 6: by Georgia, blown out by Indiana, couldn't run the football,
- 20:11Speaker 6: lose your quarterback. What's there to like about Alabama? Well,
- 20:15Speaker 6: I like Kaylen Deboor. I think yea extremely tough situation
- 20:21Speaker 6: taking over for Nick Saban. This guy against ranked teams
- 20:26Speaker 6: has a record of twenty and six, so he knows
- 20:29Speaker 6: how to play in the big games. He's got two
- 20:31Speaker 6: quarterbacks I like, and Keelon Russell and Austin Mack. You
- 20:34Speaker 6: look at the receiving court. Ryan Coleman had an off
- 20:37Speaker 6: year last year. He had about eleven drops. He's got
- 20:39Speaker 6: a chip on his shoulder. So now Ryan Coleman Williams.
- 20:42Speaker 6: I think it will be a different guy at wide receiver.
- 20:45Speaker 6: The offensive line and run game will develop this year.
- 20:47Speaker 6: The defense is solid, and when I've got to look
- 20:50Speaker 6: at their schedule, much like Texas, I don't have an
- 20:52Speaker 6: underdog in any game. I've got three toss ups Georgia
- 20:55Speaker 6: at home, and they beat Georgia on the road last
- 20:57Speaker 6: year at Tennessee and at LSU. But I think they're
- 21:01Speaker 6: way under the radar. They're my number one surprise team
- 21:03Speaker 6: and I've got to making the playoff this year.
- 21:05Speaker 5: Okay, And that's what the SEC needs is really more
- 21:10Speaker 5: great teams.
- 21:11Speaker 6: Phill, Yes, to take it.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Well, let's talk about Oklahoma a little bit. You have
- 21:17Speaker 5: them rated pretty highly, and I know defensively they were
- 21:22Speaker 5: really good last year. Brent Vinnables and I'm just speaking personally,
- 21:27Speaker 5: has not convinced me that he's a great head coach. Phil,
- 21:31Speaker 5: we know he can coach defense.
- 21:35Speaker 6: Yeah, and you know when you look at Oklahoma this year, Chip,
- 21:38Speaker 6: this goes back to yesterday's call when we talked where
- 21:42Speaker 6: you talked about the difference between the power pole and
- 21:44Speaker 6: the rankings. Yes, I rate Oklahoma number seven in the
- 21:47Speaker 6: power Pole, but they're only number thirteen in the ranking.
- 21:49Speaker 6: And you're like, well, why is that. Well, they have
- 21:51Speaker 6: to play at Michigan, at Georgia, Texas, and the Cotton
- 21:55Speaker 6: Bowl at Florida and the Swamp. Those are four pretty
- 21:59Speaker 6: tough road games, be tough to win, thows. But they
- 22:02Speaker 6: do have a great defense, no doubt They've got that
- 22:05Speaker 6: once again this year. In fact, Oklahoma has my number
- 22:08Speaker 6: three rated defense in the country. Each of the three
- 22:11Speaker 6: units in my top ten. The offensive line last year
- 22:14Speaker 6: actually had three freshmen starting at one time, and Venable
- 22:18Speaker 6: said that it may be the best offensive line he's had.
- 22:21Speaker 6: They definitely have Bill bedvo is one of the best
- 22:24Speaker 6: O line coaches, and I think if they stay healthier,
- 22:26Speaker 6: they'll be stronger. Speaking of staying healthier, what about John
- 22:30Speaker 6: Matias that hurt his hand, I think he's a different quarterback.
- 22:33Speaker 6: He's got a Seitania back at wide receiver. They've got
- 22:36Speaker 6: some dangerous running backs now. Blaylock missed the spring, but
- 22:39Speaker 6: I expect them back one hundred percent. They've got Xavier Robinson,
- 22:42Speaker 6: Lloyd Avon. I think the offense will be improved. The
- 22:44Speaker 6: defense one of the best in the country. My problem
- 22:47Speaker 6: with Oklahoma is the schedule this year.
- 22:49Speaker 5: Yes, ole Miss Phil again, new coach, quarterback, really good,
- 22:55Speaker 5: one of the top in the country. How much is
- 22:58Speaker 5: Trinidad Chambliss's return factor into what people are expecting out
- 23:04Speaker 5: of ole Miss this season? Yeah?
- 23:06Speaker 6: I think without Chambliss they're not in the preseason top ten.
- 23:09Speaker 6: I think with Chamblis they will be in the preseason
- 23:11Speaker 6: top ten. I of the new head coaches in the SEC.
- 23:14Speaker 6: I Pete Golding as the guy that steps into the
- 23:18Speaker 6: best situation. First of all, he knows the personnel inside. Now. Heck,
- 23:22Speaker 6: he was the head coach of this team during the
- 23:23Speaker 6: playoffs when they made that great run and came within
- 23:26Speaker 6: one player playing in the National title game. He's got
- 23:29Speaker 6: turned to that chamberiss back. They get Key one Lacy back.
- 23:32Speaker 6: This got the first team All American running back for
- 23:34Speaker 6: crying out loud. The offensive line looks solid. I really
- 23:37Speaker 6: like Patrick kutas the NFL calv lineman there. Defensively, they're
- 23:41Speaker 6: better up front. This is a talented and it's the
- 23:45Speaker 6: deepest defensive line they've had. And they had a really
- 23:48Speaker 6: good d line two years ago. They took a step
- 23:50Speaker 6: back last year. I think they're ready to take a
- 23:52Speaker 6: step forward. OBS does have three key games to worry about, though.
- 23:56Speaker 6: At I say at Florida because it's the week after LSU.
- 24:01Speaker 6: I don't know if you know this ship, but old
- 24:03Speaker 6: Missus hosting LSU on September nineteen. You haven't heard about that?
- 24:06Speaker 6: Have you heard it?
- 24:07Speaker 11: No?
- 24:07Speaker 5: I have not about that one.
- 24:09Speaker 6: I think Mississippi fans are going to be so pumped up.
- 24:12Speaker 6: Mississippi player is going to be so pumped up and
- 24:14Speaker 6: the very next week you have to go play Florida
- 24:16Speaker 6: in the swamp. Talk about a letdown situation. They also
- 24:19Speaker 6: played Texas on the road and Oklahoma on the road
- 24:22Speaker 6: this year, so at Georgia at home. So the schedule's
- 24:25Speaker 6: not easy none no SEC schedule is naturally, But I
- 24:29Speaker 6: think Ole miss is a legit contender.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Speaking of LSU the fighting Lane, Keffid's I've hogged the
- 24:35Speaker 5: headlines the king of the portal. What do you expect
- 24:38Speaker 5: from that LSU team, Phil, Well.
- 24:41Speaker 6: You know, last year the team that had the best
- 24:42Speaker 6: portal class, Texas Tech, went from being a above average
- 24:47Speaker 6: team to just dominating the Big twelve. So LSU comes
- 24:50Speaker 6: in with the number one portal class this year, right,
- 24:53Speaker 6: they should be just as dominant. But here's the difference.
- 24:56Speaker 6: Last year Texas Tech had my number five most experienced
- 25:00Speaker 6: team and added the portal on top of it. So
- 25:03Speaker 6: and plus coach McGuire heck of a coach, been there,
- 25:07Speaker 6: knew the plersonnel inside and out, so it was not
- 25:10Speaker 6: a new system here. LSU has the number one portal class,
- 25:14Speaker 6: but they're my number ninety three experienced team. Have a
- 25:17Speaker 6: new head coach, new coordinators on both sides of the ball,
- 25:20Speaker 6: a lot of change, a lot of turnover. They had
- 25:22Speaker 6: a fifty nine players this year, unlike Texas Tech last year.
- 25:26Speaker 6: So I know LSU will be in the preseason top
- 25:30Speaker 6: ten at the start of the year. I don't think
- 25:32Speaker 6: they're going to finish in the preseason top ten. They
- 25:34Speaker 6: may prove me wrong, but I'm not as high on
- 25:38Speaker 6: LSU as everybody else is this year.
- 25:40Speaker 5: All right, let's in with the Aggie spill and Mike
- 25:43Speaker 5: Elko won the first eleven a year ago, lost their
- 25:47Speaker 5: last two. What do you see from Texas A and
- 25:49Speaker 5: M You have them tied with Ole Miss, behind Georgia, Texas, Alabama,
- 25:55Speaker 5: and Oklahoma.
- 25:57Speaker 6: Yeah, they're legitimate SEC title contender this year. I think
- 26:01Speaker 6: when you take a look at the defensive side of
- 26:02Speaker 6: the ball, they did lose a bunch to the draft.
- 26:08Speaker 6: They lost ten draft picks overall. Defensively on the defensive line,
- 26:13Speaker 6: they lost the number two in a couple of number threes.
- 26:15Speaker 6: But I still think they're solid defensively and I rate
- 26:19Speaker 6: them their secondary number seven in the country. Offensive or
- 26:23Speaker 6: defensive line linebackers both top twenty. So overall defensively, I've
- 26:27Speaker 6: got number thirteen. And offensively, if Marcel Reid cuts down
- 26:31Speaker 6: on the turnovers, which I think he can, plays a
- 26:33Speaker 6: little more consistent. He's got the receivers. I like Mario Kraver,
- 26:37Speaker 6: I like Isaiah Horton. You look at the offensive line, now,
- 26:40Speaker 6: that is a little bit of a question because last year,
- 26:43Speaker 6: you know, when I talked to coach Elko his first
- 26:45Speaker 6: year there, I asked about the offensive line, said, Phil,
- 26:48Speaker 6: we're average, We're middle of the pack in the SEC
- 26:51Speaker 6: offensive line. Last year he said, hey, we're at the
- 26:54Speaker 6: top of the SEC and they were Joe Moore Award
- 26:56Speaker 6: semi finalists last year. This year, naturally with one start back,
- 27:00Speaker 6: he said, they're a step down, but he feels they
- 27:02Speaker 6: could develop into an uprtional on team and that's going
- 27:05Speaker 6: to be the key to me for A and M
- 27:07Speaker 6: this year. In fact, I radam the number sixteen offensive line. Now,
- 27:11Speaker 6: they do have to play LSU on the road, but
- 27:13Speaker 6: they showed last year they can go in there and win.
- 27:15Speaker 6: They won that game by twenty four points. They play
- 27:18Speaker 6: Alabama on the road in Oklahoma on the road. I
- 27:20Speaker 6: think Mike Elcho in his third year and third year
- 27:22Speaker 6: head coaches generally have a lot of success. I think
- 27:25Speaker 6: they are a legitimate SEC title contender this year.
- 27:28Speaker 5: Music to the ears of a lot of my listeners. Phil,
- 27:32Speaker 5: This is why we talk to you every year. I
- 27:34Speaker 5: want to mention again that you can get the college
- 27:38Speaker 5: football Preview at Barnes and Noble and books a million

- 27:55Speaker 6: magazine on a weekly basis, color coded red and green,

- 28:15Speaker 6: and check those out. So that is Phil Steel dot com.

- 28:21Speaker 6: pages and every FCS team that's available at Phil Steel
- 28:24Speaker 6: dot com.
- 28:25Speaker 5: Do you ever sleep?
- 28:28Speaker 6: This is my fun time of the year. Chip. This
- 28:30Speaker 6: is I'm doing maybe sixty sixty five hours a week
- 28:33Speaker 6: talking football on the radio. It's almost like being on
- 28:36Speaker 6: vacation right now. Sleep the sleep deprivation happens during magazine season,
- 28:41Speaker 6: which is seven months, and then football season, which of
- 28:44Speaker 6: course is five months.
- 28:46Speaker 5: This is the great Phil Steele, the guru of college
- 28:50Speaker 5: football fail. I cannot thank you enough for taking these
- 28:53Speaker 5: two days with us, and we're gonna we hope we
- 28:56Speaker 5: can be in touch before this year is over.
- 29:00Speaker 6: Sounds good, Chip, And like I mentioned yesterday, I can't
- 29:02Speaker 6: thank you enough for having my magazine on your show
- 29:05Speaker 6: for thirty two straight years, helping me when there was
- 29:09Speaker 6: thirty magazines out there and we were just a newcomer.
- 29:11Speaker 6: So appreciate all you've done to help us out throughout
- 29:14Speaker 6: the years.
- 29:15Speaker 5: Phil, thank you again.
- 29:16Speaker 6: We'll talk soon, all right, Chip, have a good one,
- 29:19Speaker 6: my friend.
- 29:20Speaker 5: That's a great Phil Steele. And yeah, we've been doing
- 29:25Speaker 5: this a while. We have both been doing this a while.
- 29:29Speaker 5: He started the magazine I think a year after I
- 29:32Speaker 5: started this program, so we have kind of grown up together.
- 29:36Speaker 5: I started to grow old together. But Phil, Phil's not
- 29:39Speaker 5: nearly as old as I am. He was actually a
- 29:42Speaker 5: really young man when he started. In case you missed it,
- 29:47Speaker 5: he has an M and Old Miss tied behind Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas,
- 29:55Speaker 5: and Georgia in the SEC.
- 30:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 30:03Speaker 5: I don't like to go against Phil because his track
- 30:08Speaker 5: record is pretty amazing. He may be right about Oklahoma.
- 30:13Speaker 5: They're going to have to prove it to me. John
- 30:15Speaker 5: Beneer is going to have to prove it, and Brent
- 30:18Speaker 5: Finniples is going to have to prove it. I like
- 30:21Speaker 5: his Alabama being quote a surprise team. I don't think
- 30:26Speaker 5: Alabama is going to be sixth in the league, but
- 30:28Speaker 5: you know, there's just not room for everybody at the top.
- 30:33Speaker 5: I'm not sure about Tennessee. I'm you know, he's got
- 30:42Speaker 5: LSU at seventh man. That would make the Cajunes mad,
- 30:47Speaker 5: wouldn't it after all the hype you know when Florida
- 30:55Speaker 5: is eleventh in the league. I mean, it's it's pretty stout.
- 30:59Speaker 5: But we already that there's a lot of competition and
- 31:02Speaker 5: like I said, only one team can win. Tomorrow, Scotland
- 31:11Speaker 5: Dinnon will be with us, Scott Spiezi will be with us.
- 31:14Speaker 5: We will have Part three of our SEC preview, which
- 31:17Speaker 5: is coming up here in just a little bit with
- 31:20Speaker 5: Kentucky special studio guests coming up as well. Before the
- 31:25Speaker 5: top of the hour ends we're going to hear from
- 31:27Speaker 5: Mike Elko in the second hour. Stepcheck Service Center twenty

- 33:22Speaker 13: and the few boys ever had. I'm thunder all the
- 33:27Speaker 13: highway looking for bad, bad bad. I'm tonight.
- 33:32Speaker 5: They're great.
- 33:33Speaker 8: John R.
- 33:33Speaker 5: Cash with us here on a Tuesday afternoon. We continue
- 33:38Speaker 5: our SEC preview with Kentucky after thirteen years under Mark
- 33:43Speaker 5: Stoops Big Blue Nation as a new leader, Kentucky native
- 33:47Speaker 5: Will Stein, the second youngest coach at a power program.
- 33:52Speaker 5: The quarterback's also new, Notre Dame transferred Kenny Minshi. Minschi
- 33:57Speaker 5: says everyone is new at Kentucky this year.
- 34:01Speaker 14: Is a new team, a lot of new coaches except
- 34:04Speaker 14: for one. So everybody was in the same boat as me,
- 34:08Speaker 14: same situation as me, So it made it a little
- 34:10Speaker 14: bit easier just with everyone kind of doing the same
- 34:13Speaker 14: thing in terms of, you know, meeting teammates, learning who
- 34:17Speaker 14: guys are, learning about guys, spending time with guys. And
- 34:21Speaker 14: it was a very smooth transition in terms of people
- 34:23Speaker 14: which I feel like I valued and noticed the most
- 34:27Speaker 14: in my first few months here.
- 34:28Speaker 5: Former A and M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman has joined
- 34:32Speaker 5: Stein's staff at safety. Ty Bryant likes what he sees
- 34:37Speaker 5: so far.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I think Will Stein he is really like he has
- 34:39Speaker 1: his hand in on the defense, but it's more Jay Bateman.
- 34:42Speaker 1: He has aggressive style of the defense, and he's a
- 34:45Speaker 1: guy who's going to get after you and we're going
- 34:48Speaker 1: to see and send the blitz and be sticky on
- 34:51Speaker 1: the back end.
- 34:51Speaker 5: But Kentucky hosts Alabama in week two and comes to
- 34:57Speaker 5: Kyle Field in week three. Welcome to the SEC, coach, Steine.
- 35:03Speaker 15: I'm thrilled to represent Big Blue Nation as head football coach.
- 35:07Speaker 15: As a Kentucky native, a kid growing up going to
- 35:10Speaker 15: CommonWell Stadium to watch the Cats, this is truly a
- 35:14Speaker 15: dream come true to me. I am BBN for eighteen
- 35:18Speaker 15: years of my life. Growing up, I was a member
- 35:21Speaker 15: of Big Blue Nation. My dad played a Kentucky my
- 35:24Speaker 15: mom's a graduate. To come back to the Bluegrass State.
- 35:27Speaker 15: Being a fan himself of Kentucky football Kentucky Athletics, It's
- 35:31Speaker 15: truly surreal.
- 35:34Speaker 5: The expectations are low in year one with so many
- 35:38Speaker 5: new faces, but we'll find out early just how competitive
- 35:42Speaker 5: Kentucky will be in twenty twenty six. Tomorrow we will
- 35:46Speaker 5: look at the sooners. Our sec preview is brought to
- 35:50Speaker 5: you by Zordabin Flooring, First Financial Bank, MSc, Opus and

- 39:11Speaker 5: As I mentioned, the second youngest coach comes from Oregon.
- 39:16Speaker 5: Before that, he was at UTSA, so he's been under
- 39:21Speaker 5: some good coaches. Jay Bateman is there, so it will
- 39:28Speaker 5: be It'll be interesting to see they got the Notre
- 39:32Speaker 5: Dame transfer minshe CJ. Baxter, remember him at Texas. This
- 39:39Speaker 5: guy is you know, it was hurt unfortunately at Texas.

- 44:33Speaker 5: teresa is here with. Us we have got the feast
- 44:36Speaker 5: of carrying On. Wednesday it's one of my favorite events every.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Year thank you very much for being. HERE i just
- 44:42Speaker 5: wanted you to come in and remind people That wednesday
- 44:46Speaker 5: starting at eleven am at The Brassa. Center, right that's. Correct,
- 44:49Speaker 5: okay people can come and get a plate of food
- 44:54Speaker 5: and pay what you'd normally pay for your lunch and and.
- 44:58Speaker 5: More we'd like you to pay a little bit more
- 45:00Speaker 5: if you're. Able, yeah because this is a big fundraiser
- 45:04Speaker 5: for the Food, bank is it?
- 45:05Speaker 1: Not?
- 45:05Speaker 11: Yeah so this is our thirty.
- 45:07Speaker 5: Third oh my, gosh is it? Really oh?
- 45:10Speaker 11: Yeah have you been All?
- 45:11Speaker 5: YEAH i THINK i THINK i was about nine when we.
- 45:14Speaker 5: Started this is my twenty, FIRST i. Believe, okay, YEAH
- 45:19Speaker 5: i Know i've been to all of.
- 45:20Speaker 11: Those, YEAH i think you were coming before.
- 45:23Speaker 6: That.
- 45:23Speaker 11: Yeah so, yeah you are a staple at this people
- 45:26Speaker 11: will be would be heard if you're not.
- 45:28Speaker 5: There SO i love this. Event to describe, it.
- 45:31Speaker 11: It's, yeah it's a come and go casual fundraising. Event
- 45:37Speaker 11: we have a lot of plated buy a, table have
- 45:41Speaker 11: a speaker kind of.
- 45:41Speaker 5: Event, yeah we don't do. That just eat.
- 45:44Speaker 11: Lunch you come, in you eat. Lunch you don't have
- 45:46Speaker 11: a sign, seating it's rows and rows of, tables so
- 45:49Speaker 11: you just sort of find a place.
- 45:51Speaker 5: To finish and you'll, go, HEY i didn't know you
- 45:53Speaker 5: were going to be. Here it is a Community it's
- 45:57Speaker 5: one of the few events of the year that you
- 46:00Speaker 5: see every section of our community. Represented, yeah, YEAH i would.
- 46:06Speaker 11: Agree so you've got people there who are major donors
- 46:11Speaker 11: to the food bank and they're coming, to you, know
- 46:15Speaker 11: just show their support of this event as well as
- 46:18Speaker 11: the other ways they support. Us then you've got all
- 46:20Speaker 11: these community leaders in aprons who are serving you the,
- 46:26Speaker 11: food devoting their time to The President Valley Food bank
- 46:30Speaker 11: in this. Event and then you've got, families and then
- 46:33Speaker 11: you've got people who want to see their boss and
- 46:36Speaker 11: an apron serving the. Food and then you've got people
- 46:38Speaker 11: who actually need a. Meal, yes all in the same
- 46:43Speaker 11: at the same. Lunch And SO i love the feel of,
- 46:48Speaker 11: THAT i love the community around, THAT i love the
- 46:52Speaker 11: openness around. That i'm very proud of this event because
- 46:56Speaker 11: of that that there's kids, there they're seen. There it's
- 47:00Speaker 11: just it's it's incredible and.
- 47:03Speaker 5: There's a representative of just about everyone in our. Community
- 47:06Speaker 5: same with the.
- 47:07Speaker 11: People that are serving you your. Food so if you've
- 47:09Speaker 11: never been, before you you go up to a line
- 47:13Speaker 11: that looks like a buffet, line but you just sort
- 47:15Speaker 11: of put your plate out and you tell this person
- 47:17Speaker 11: across from you wearing an apron who could be the mayor, Police,
- 47:21Speaker 11: gee could Be, chip could be someone FROM kbtx, OH
- 47:25Speaker 11: i would like a couple more things of sausage or
- 47:29Speaker 11: whatever because it's rice and, bean, sausage salad and. Dessert
- 47:34Speaker 11: and the way that we make money is most of
- 47:36Speaker 11: that food has actually been donated by vendors like A. G. B,
- 47:40Speaker 11: Kroger Scarmarto, Food bluebell and Then buppies this year is
- 47:47Speaker 11: actually making the. Food so we'll get to see what
- 47:50Speaker 11: kind of you, know twist that he puts on a
- 47:54Speaker 11: simple meal.
- 47:55Speaker 5: Of rice and. Beans you're just asking for a donation
- 48:00Speaker 5: people who come in the, Door, yes come in the.
- 48:02Speaker 11: Door, again there's no, tickets there's no certain. Price it's
- 48:07Speaker 11: just donations of what you feel that you can. Give
- 48:10Speaker 11: and so for a lot of people that's twenty bucks
- 48:14Speaker 11: for some. People last year there was a whole lot
- 48:17Speaker 11: of one hundred dollars, bills which made me very. Happy
- 48:22Speaker 11: and then if you, can't if you can't come to the,
- 48:24Speaker 11: event or you can come but you can't stay and,
- 48:26Speaker 11: eat you can get the.
- 48:27Speaker 5: Food you can get it to. Go, yeah you can
- 48:29Speaker 5: take it back to the whole.
- 48:30Speaker 11: Office, yeah and a lot of actually a lot of
- 48:32Speaker 11: people do.
- 48:33Speaker 5: That, yeah you get a.
- 48:34Speaker 11: Whole lot of go.
- 48:35Speaker 5: ORDERS i know it's it's been. Difficult fundraising is, difficult
- 48:41Speaker 5: the economy is. Difficult where are we right now at
- 48:45Speaker 5: the food Pack.
- 48:47Speaker 11: So, yeah the, NEED i would, say talking not so
- 48:51Speaker 11: much about the food make, itself but how we're impacted
- 48:54Speaker 11: by the. Need one in six people in The Brasses,
- 48:57Speaker 11: valley one out of four children are dealing with the
- 49:01Speaker 11: issue of food and security or. Hunger the depth of
- 49:04Speaker 11: the hunger is more, though if you you, know maybe
- 49:06Speaker 11: you heard me talk five years ago and you're, saying
- 49:08Speaker 11: she's saying the same. Thing nothing's getting. BETTER i would
- 49:12Speaker 11: say the depth of the need for individual families is.
- 49:15Speaker 11: Greater so if somebody maybe would visit a food pantry
- 49:19Speaker 11: once a, quarter now they might be visiting one or
- 49:22Speaker 11: two a, month which is something that we.
- 49:23Speaker 5: Allow.
- 49:24Speaker 11: Absolutely we don't call it double. Dippling we don't think
- 49:27Speaker 11: it's a bad. Thing it's people being resourceful to get
- 49:30Speaker 11: food on the, table and so that depth of need
- 49:33Speaker 11: is causing a lot of stress and a lot of
- 49:35Speaker 11: anxiety for our.
- 49:36Speaker 5: Neighbors there's also ways to. VOLUNTEER i, mean there's plenty
- 49:40Speaker 5: of volunteering opportunities at the food bank Right so.
- 49:43Speaker 11: Going back to the food bank, itself you, know we
- 49:46Speaker 11: need to raise every year about four point five million
- 49:49Speaker 11: dollars annually to do what we. Do and last year
- 49:54Speaker 11: we did pretty well because there was a lot of
- 49:56Speaker 11: support around that government shutdown and people knew that we
- 49:59Speaker 11: were stepping up to do. More the year before that
- 50:02Speaker 11: we were really. Struggling SO i feel like this year
- 50:05Speaker 11: is going to be again another struggling. Year we have
- 50:07Speaker 11: less government, funding as do most, charities. Universities it's just
- 50:12Speaker 11: the way things are right. Now so the only way
- 50:15Speaker 11: for us to continue to do what we do at
- 50:17Speaker 11: the level that we do is for, individuals foundations and
- 50:21Speaker 11: corporations and businesses to, say, hey we're going to step
- 50:24Speaker 11: up now that we don't have the same government support
- 50:26Speaker 11: so this is an event that makes it easy to do.
- 50:29Speaker 11: That you can you can come in, person you can donate.
- 50:32Speaker 11: Online As chip, said we need volunteers all year, round
- 50:36Speaker 11: especially actually this month because we are a community that runs.
- 50:41Speaker 5: On the same, schedule schedule till.
- 50:45Speaker 11: The students come. Back we have fewer volunteers in the.
- 50:47Speaker 11: Summertime SO i mean we can, accommodate accommodate big. Groups
- 50:52Speaker 11: if you want to come with your, work with your church,
- 50:54Speaker 11: group with very cool anything like any kind.
- 50:57Speaker 10: Of group that you're.
- 50:58Speaker 4: With, fraternity absolutely, Absolutely.
- 51:03Speaker 5: Okay eleven am at The Breza Centers, wednesday and how
- 51:06Speaker 5: long will you be There? Wednesday we'll be there to one,
- 51:09Speaker 5: okay love and to what yes, quick but you'll get serve.
- 51:12Speaker 5: Quick you'll you, know for for, work believe, me uh
- 51:18Speaker 5: there there won't be a better restaurant in town and
- 51:20Speaker 5: there won't be a faster restaurant in. Town to go
- 51:23Speaker 5: to this event and be able to donate and see
- 51:26Speaker 5: people in the community that you don't run into very.
- 51:29Speaker 5: Often it's just one of my favorite events of the.
- 51:33Speaker 5: Year thank you for allowing me to continue to show.
- 51:36Speaker 11: Up we love having.
- 51:37Speaker 10: You you're usually the first one THAT.
- 51:39Speaker 11: Rsvp you know we can count on.

- 51:48Speaker 5: Hope i'll still be able to do.
- 51:49Speaker 4: It all, Right you've got.

- 52:11Speaker 5: The Brasses. Center it's it's, quick it's. Easy you, can
- 52:17Speaker 5: as we, mentioned you can get food to go for your.
- 52:21Speaker 5: Office you can get everybody in your office to throw
- 52:25Speaker 5: in a donation for the food. Bank go pick it
- 52:28Speaker 5: up and bring it back to the. Office or you

- 52:36Speaker 5: is there's not a better. Excuse and it's it's a great.
- 52:42Speaker 5: Fundraiser and thanks to everybody that donates to make it.
- 52:48Speaker 5: Possible and LIKE i, said it's just it's one of
- 52:51Speaker 5: those community wide events that there aren't many of. Them,
- 52:55Speaker 5: yes it's a great community, yes people donate to all
- 52:58Speaker 5: kinds of causes in this. Community you just don't see
- 53:02Speaker 5: everyone together like you do at this particular event year
- 53:08Speaker 5: in and year. Out and so we look forward to
- 53:13Speaker 5: having you there. Tomorrow we look forward to seeing you there.
- 53:16Speaker 5: Tomorrow say. Hello if you come through my, line please
- 53:20Speaker 5: don't throw any food at. Me the food we don't
- 53:25Speaker 5: want to. Waste it's very. Important there's always, plenty unlike
- 53:31Speaker 5: the people that we're collecting food. For and most of
- 53:38Speaker 5: you eat out at lunch, anyway this is just a
- 53:42Speaker 5: really easy way to do. It throw in an extra twenty,
- 53:44Speaker 5: bucks throwing an extra hundred, bucks and you'll feel good about.
- 53:51Speaker 5: It you'll get, lunch and you will help a great

- 58:30Speaker 23: room AND i think here's the place that we need
- 58:33Speaker 23: to mentally get, to AND i think it's a very realistic.
- 58:36Speaker 23: PLACE a AND m in Mid november is very much
- 58:39Speaker 23: in playoff, consideration feeling like they're setting themselves up to
- 58:43Speaker 23: be able to get back to the college Football, playoff
- 58:46Speaker 23: and you know the way that these two seasons have
- 58:50Speaker 23: finished Under Mike elco and knowing that the elephant in
