Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_02: From television city in Hollywood.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: Ant Rowe was right.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: Down in Mayberry, things are just grand.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: It's the friendliest little podcast in the land.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Nip it in the bud.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Hi everybody.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to Nip It in the Bud, our Andy Griffith retrospective tribute.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: I'm Paul.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: And I'm Tim.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: And remember, Tim, Aunt Rowe was right.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Too much TV, but it's good TV.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: And we we're on season one still, episode six, and Runaway Kid.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: And by the way, the um original air date was Monday, November 7th, 1960.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: How about that?
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: We're almost on track for 66 years ago, Paul.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Can you believe it?
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is hard to believe.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: And thank goodness we have these preserved.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: This one had a kind of a fun, different opening with uh a little gun fight going on in Mayberry.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I love that.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Just starting like your standard Western out on the mean streets of Mayberry, and you see one of the young guys, young kids about Opie's age, walking slow, got his hands above his guns.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: Remind me of my brother Tom, who he just went everywhere as a kid about that age with his holster on.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: He had his red cowboy hat.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: And I he's he's the one I thought of when I watched this episode.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Opie's like there, I guess it's two of them against one Opie there.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but Opie holds his own that uh they finally draw.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: And by the way, Opie had the cuteness factor cranked way up on this in his little outfit.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: He did.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: But man, he's bam, bam, you're dead, you're dead.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: And the the other guys, uh Tommy and Steve, I think it was, fall down on the pavement and then the sheriff shows up, which what a perfect uh title for a Western.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: And Opie tries to uh uh get Andy to draw uh because they don't want to, they're not gonna let the sheriff take them in.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: And he says, I'm Billy the kid.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: And Andy tries to tell him, Oh, why don't you turn yourselves in?
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: You'll get a fair trial.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: But no, no, no.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: Nope, he shoots him anyway.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: Pretty tough, really.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's disappointed Andy didn't fall down.
- 3:16unknown: Right.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: Andy says, I'm a little busy to die right now, but I'll I'll try to get around to it later.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 3:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, then then right uh right after that, the boys are trying to figure out what to do next after Andy goes inside, whether they should stick around and wait for him to come out and uh play dead on the sidewalk, or whether they ought to do something else, and one of them has the bright idea, why don't we push the sheriff's car in front of the fire plug?
- 3:48SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, boy, those guys, they're pretty sneaky and think they're gonna pull that off.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: But do you remember cars like that where the uh parking brake was over on the side and you just pull it and it would release?
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and a lot of the stick shifts too, you could just uh do that with.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: And just get them to move, get them in gear without even putting the key in the kind of anybody seeing it now that doesn't only know modern cars would be shocked and say, how could they do that?
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: But it's amazing.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: You could do that.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you could do that back in the day, and that's where I had to suspend disbelief a little bit because seeing those through three boys on the side of that squad car trying to push it up to the fire plug, which was not far away, but yeah, because it's still heavy, even though it allows you to put it in gear or you know, or get it uh get it to move, it's still not like you're moving a matchbox car.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Uh that is it was kind of hard to believe.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: I think there might have been some selective camera work where you couldn't see that the uh the grown-ups, somebody was helping them push that car.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: But Sheldon Leonard right behind in the back.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: So uh they did manage to uh make it look like they moved the car, and the next thing you see is uh the boys take off, but then Barney's down the corner and he sees the car and he just shakes his head like, oh no, what am I gonna do about this?
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: It's an infraction.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, he can't just ignore it.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: No, for Barney, he something like that, he can't let that just slide.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: So uh you see him with his foot on the fire plug, uh, with his knee up near his chest, so he can write on his pad, and he's writing out the citation.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: And the next thing you know, he's inside the courthouse where Andy's doing some office work, and he Barney's kind of hemming and hawing, but he finally gets around to the fact that he said, Well, cousin Andy, I I'm gonna have to give you this citation.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: And you know, and that's the third time uh that he's called him cousin in this season one, so it's just uh it's fun to hear it come up because I don't remember hearing it in like future seasons.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: So uh anytime he says cousin, I love it.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Me too.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: Me too, yeah.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Because having watched those episodes for so many years, you don't always run across some of these early ones where he was calling him cousin Andy, and it it is pretty comical now to listen to that.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: But this film set up uh a good exchange between Andy and Barney, don't you think?
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Oh, definitely.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: Barney asked him, Well, aren't you gonna sign this citation after he wants to give it to Andy?
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: And Andy resists, he's not gonna do it because he doesn't think he parked in front of the uh fire plug, and that there's something wrong here.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: And Barney says, Well, I'm gonna run you in.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna have to run you in.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: And Andy says, Well, I am in.
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: Oh, it was great, but then but then the whole thing um with uh Barney uh wanting to continue, Andy says, Well, why don't or or no, there's a whole thing about the I'll have to haul you in front of the justices of the peace.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: And then Barney realized, oh yeah, you are the justice of the peace.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: Oh, but but they persist, and and Andy says, Well, why don't you be justice of the peace and try and give me a fair trial?
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: So he swears Barney in, and and it just begins this whole comical bit that they do together.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: You know, that reminded me a lot of Andy's uh kind of um uh you know comedic career where he released those albums of himself kind of giving those monologues because he's really when he's fighting his case in front of Barney, he's kind of almost getting a little bit like uh kind of like uh you know a preacher, you know, like uh he could see him kind of thought you didn't know how far he was gonna go, but it was very uh well done.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: It really was.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: You could tell he was kind of in his element there.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I felt like yeah, he had kind of that religious fervor going and it was like he was uh preacher at a revival meeting.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: There is foul play afoot.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: That's where he kind of reaches his climax there, and then all of a sudden Barney says, case dismissed, and he slams the gavel and he s walks out of the courthouse.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, after after Barney declares him not guilty, Opie comes in.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: All of a sudden, uh the fog clears a little bit for Andy as far as the mystery of how did his car get in front of the fire plug.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: And Opie and he walk out on the street, and he kind of explains, well, my buddies Tommy and Steve wanted to just play a little joke, and so so we did it.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: And and that's where Andy says, Well, maybe I'm gonna have to uh haul you guys in or arrest you guys.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: And I said, Well, no, no, I'll take that back.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: It was Opie saying, I think you could get a confession out of them, Pa.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: For pulling this prank.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: And Andy goes, Well, shouldn't I have to uh get a confession out of you, Opie?
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: And he said, Well, I didn't push very hard.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: And Opie, I'll tell you if you if you ever have any secrets, never tell them to Opie.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Because he uh which is good.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: He's just uh, you know, he comes across on this show as such an honest kid and will tell his pa anything, which is really what I think that difference from those other TV kids at the time who maybe were more pranksters.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, absolutely, and yeah, we do see Opie do the right thing so often in the series, but all along he's kind of learning his way, too.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: And I think that's that's kind of what the main driving force behind this whole episode was, was um when he explains to Andy what what's going on.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Uh Andy's proud of him for telling it him, and he said, I'd I'd give you a badge right now if I had one for good character or something like that.
- 11:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: And uh, but then uh he goes on to say that uh, well, I thought I should tell you, Pa, but uh, and then I promised I wouldn't tell on my friends, because they are my best friends.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: And Opie starts to walk away, and Andy gets thinking about it, and he said, you know, I think he's thinking that he needs to help Opie learn a lesson right there about uh never going back on your word when you make a promise.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: So they have a little discussion about that.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I as soon as he did that, I thought, oh, big mistake.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: He's letting Opie know not uh you know not to break those promises with your friends, you know that's gonna lead to trouble.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: That's that's what really gets things started.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: Because next thing we know, after they uh have had that little discussion, Andy's on the front porch of the house playing his guitar, and Opie walks up and kind of recalls the discussion they had out at the courthouse before he introduces his new friend Tex.
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Tex is a good uh another good little kid, a good kid actor, I should say.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh I thought so too.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: I I really like that kid.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: He's got a couple front teeth, he's got kind of this just kind of kid look to him that very believable, and yeah, he did a good job in his role as as Tex, a runaway kid.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: And and why is he called Texas real name's George Foley?
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: But he he's going by Tex.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: He's going by Tex, and we don't find out he's George Foley right away because Opie originally introduces him as George, and then uh George says, Could you call me Tex?
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: And yeah, yeah, Opie has to explain what Tex is all about.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: He says, Well, he's not sure yet whether he's going to Texas or Wyoming.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: And explains that he's running away from home or has run off from home.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: And Andy says, You mean your ma and pa don't know about you being away from home?
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: And and that's where Opie pipes up and says, Pa, how can you run away if your folks know?
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: And which makes a good point.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: The whole first episode, right?
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: Right, where that's where Opie learned that how to run away is you just write a note and then you go.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: And that oh, and this is where Aunt B actually gets to uh what she's gets a she have a big part in this one, but yeah, she made her present stone there.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she's got a great line in uh after Opie says that how can you run away if your folks know?
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: And she says, yeah, it kind of takes the starch out of the whole thing.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: And Andy's all all the while, right, is trying to explain that, well, I need to talk, let Joe George's folks know where he is.
- 15:32SPEAKER_03: And that's what's confusing to Opie.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: Because at one at one side he's supposed to be true to his friend, but he also is being asked by his father, who's also the sheriff, to tell him what he need uh the sheriff needs to know to help find his or connect it back to his parents.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: So it's a tough moral situation, moral dilemma here.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: It shouldn't be though.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: He should just try to find the kid's parents.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: He's the sheriff, but yeah, he's but he's he's uh but he's in safe hands at least, as long as uh Andy knows, has him with him, you know, and doesn't lose sight of him.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: But that's that's what uh I struggled with a little bit because the next scene uh we leave the front porch and they're back at the courthouse, and Andy's doing some more work around the office uh with Barney and doesn't seem all that concerned anymore because and George and Opie aren't with him.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: We assume he's they're still at the house with Aunt B.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: But yeah, Andy's just kind of going about the rest of his day, which kind of surprised me.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: Barney's real focused on those wanted poster rewards.
- 17:08unknown: Right.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: He's fantasizing what he'd do with the$500 reward.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Andy turned that into a good little bit too, with uh, you know, what would you, you know, what would you do?
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: And it kind of made it like um like a like a hardship to have that money the way he kind of twisted it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: The Barney's thinking, oh, I wouldn't want to waste it, I'd save it, I'd do, you know, and and uh so I thought that was that was funny how he turned that around from being, I could get$500 to you almost don't want it now.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's more trouble than it's worth.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: But then we're interrupted by a phone call that Barney takes, and you hear his side of the conversation talking about uh it's a sheriff from East Mont calling about a runaway boy named George Foley, and he's getting all the information, and Andy's kind of nodding his head about the whole thing.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: Um, but he doesn't really let on to Ant uh to Barney rather what what he knows, uh at least at that point.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: But he's uh you can see Andy is kind of like, okay, I got the situation in hand now.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: And the next thing we see is that uh we're going back to the front porch, uh, where Opie and Tex are down on the floor of the porch playing with a frog.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: And I love that.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, would you ever see that in a sitcom now?
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: No, not at all.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: Andy starts having the discussion, mostly with Tex, because he tells Opie to go inside and feed the frog, uh, so that he and Tex can talk a little bit.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: Andy's saying, Well, you know, if you're run away, uh, what are you gonna do if you have a tummy ache?
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: He's like, my horse will take care of me.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: Instead of a dog being a man's best friend, it's a horse.
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: Um, and Andy's asking him, well, why why are you running away from home anyway, Tex?
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: And he says, Well, I'm tired of taking orders.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Boy, oh boy, I guess everybody can relate to that.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: Yep, definitely.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Having to pick up your toys and all that kind of stuff.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: They're having a little exchange out there, and then all of a sudden, Barney comes wheeling up uh the dust in the squad car, and he just runs right up onto the porch, and he's he's got big news, big uh information for Andy.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: And he gets to meet meet George and Oh, right, right, yeah.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: That's the key part.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: And Andy introduces him right away, right?
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: As George, and Barney, this is George Foley, and and Barney's too excited about what he has to say to realize what Andy's actually telling him.
- 20:33SPEAKER_03: Because he's he's carrying a pad of paper.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: And as we learn in later episodes, right, Barney is always wanting to be up on the latest with police technology.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: And here he's drawn drawn a picture of the runaway kid.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like being one of those uh those artists in the police station that that uh doll that draws something up, so he's real proud of what he came up with.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, he's so proud.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: So I could I could look at this, I could pick him out of a Sunday school picnic.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Meanwhile, he was just with them and didn't think anything of it.
- 21:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but at some point it dawns on him that, oh uh yeah, because I think he says, I I would know George Foley anywhere.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: And and then he sa kind of puzzles for a minute and says, What was the name of that kid who was just here a minute ago?
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: And Andy says, That was George Foley.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: Barney gets all disgusted then about the whole situation.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: And he's upset with Andy uh you know, not doing anything about it because he's harboring a fugitive.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: Yep, about to run Andy in for the second time.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: In the episode.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: I was all upset about that.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: But Andy tries to tell him to simmer down and he's gonna take care of it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: And uh and Barney kind of storms off at that point, but he's uh you feel like okay, things are moving in the right direction here.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: And so after uh Barney leaves, Andy goes into the house where Opie is working on making some sandwiches for Texas big trip.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and boy, it's if uh Texas any of that sandwiches, he's not gonna make it far.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: I think the first one was peanut butter and sardines, maybe.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, peanut butter and sardines.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: I thought what a uh I was surprised they even have sardines in uh never hear about sardines anymore.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: No, oh my goodness, and what a sandwich that would be.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and uh I think Opie said was describing it to Texas, you know, I made you this peanut butter and sardine with marshmallows and bubble gum.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: It's like a wool.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that'll get them far to the hospital.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: And uh, and I think that that was the point where Andy came in and hears about the sandwich and says, Well, Texas got a big trip ahead of him.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: I think you're gonna need to make him some more sandwiches.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: So so uh Opie goes back in the kitchen, and all the time I'm wondering, where's Aunt B in this whole situation?
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: Opie sandwiches on his own seems a little dubious, and you know, like, where was Aunt B when those two were alone, too?
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: You'd never get let that happen today.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: You'd be in front of social services or something if you Yeah, leaving them alone like that.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: Uh right cook in the kitchen.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: But the whole sandwich thing is is funny because now uh Andy and Tex are out in the living room, and Andy lays down on the couch and he starts musing and asking George slash Tex a few questions like how many sandwiches do you think you can eat in a day?
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, with with the idea that he's going to make uh Tex think a little bit about his plans.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: And how it's gonna take six months walking to get to Texas.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: And I don't think Tex was thinking it's gonna be that long of a trip.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: Uh I mean uh little George the actor is doing a great job of like looking kind of wide-eyed about that whole situation about oh my gosh, I didn't know it was gonna be six months.
- 25:14SPEAKER_03: And then Andy starts counting up sandwiches.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, if you think George, you could probably eat four sandwiches, or maybe nine, he says.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: Maybe nine a day.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: Let's see, so in two months, that'd probably be about six hundred sandwiches.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: That's a lot of sandwiches.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: A lot of sandwiches.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: How are you gonna take all those sandwiches with you?
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: And that's what he said.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: Well, I do have a wagon.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: And he really got to him when he said you'll need blankets and snowshoes.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: He said, snowshoes.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because yeah, for it's gonna be cold up in the mountains.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh boy, what are you gonna do without snowshoes?
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: And Tex is like, well, if I wait till August, uh, that's my birthday.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: Maybe I'll get some snowshoes for my birthday.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: And that, yeah, I think the the concerns are starting to pile up for Tex at that point.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, and he's thinking about what's going on back at home because it's five o'clock, and Andy's saying, Well, if you're gonna get going, it's getting kind of late in the day here.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, and Tex starts imagining what's going on at home with his mom cooking pork chops.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, that sounded good.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: She said to smell how good she makes the house smell.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, right, right.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I mean that really plays on your imagination there.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: You just get this whole mental picture of hmm.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: You could say it was a nice little scene because he started feeling a little sad that he was not with his his uh parents.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: Right, right, because he's thinking about his dad would be home now, and uh if he's not too tired, we'd have a game of catch.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: And and then he asked Andy, why doesn't he come and get me?
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: It's a little mad, like you know, why why isn't he trying to find me?
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, and or why doesn't he call?
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: And and Andy explains to him, well, he he doesn't know where you are, so uh, and that's that's when Tex finally kind of breaks down and says, uh, you reckon I should call him, and or maybe you reckon you could call for me, because I have a text texts hasn't made too many phone calls in his life, right?
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Oh, but that so Andy says, yeah, finally uh I think has gotten him around to to that, and he he lets it be George's decision.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: You want me to install your ma and pawn?
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: And he says, Yeah.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Uh and that so this is the first part where Andy picks up the phone, if I if I remember right, and asks Sarah to get me Mr.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Foley in East Mont.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so we have Sarah making her debut, and uh she plays a big part in the series.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Never see her.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, and I can't remember having an operator come on the line when uh when I was growing up.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: But fortunately, Sarah was able to connect the call pretty quickly, right?
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 28:57SPEAKER_03: And and uh meanwhile, while while that's going on, Opie comes out and announces that he's made some more sandwiches.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: Peanut butter and bologna, peanut butter and liverwurst, and peanut butter and peanut butter.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's uh peanut butter and peanut butter sounds like the best one.
- 29:17unknown: Yeah.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Of those options, yeah, I would definitely go with the peanut butter and peanut butter too.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Uh and well, Andy did get through to Mr.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: Foley.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I thought it was funny when he was telling him he's okay.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, Andy said he's fine as a daisy.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: I thought there's an expression you don't hear too much.
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: No, no, I love some of those expressions.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: And I I was just reading something the other day, too, about the writers that uh for the show were almost entirely Easterners, uh, kind of northeast, growing up in the city and so forth.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, so they actually had to learn some of those kinds of expressions to write them into the episodes, and uh obviously they got pretty good at it.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:14SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, so Andy Wright is having that conversation with Mr.
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: Foley, and yeah, he's fine as a daisy, and he gets off the phone, and Opie kind of gets in his face about you let me down, Pa.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: Uh that by calling the parents.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: And so he's kind of Andy's kind of in trouble with Opie as far as for breaking his little secret.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: He had a had promised uh Opie that he wouldn't do that.
- 30:48SPEAKER_03: Um, but then he tries to explain.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: And I actually I thought that was a good explanation.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: Uh Andy tells this story about well, suppose there's a sign up that says no swimming, but uh boy has gone out there and broke the rule and was swimming but started to drown.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: And suppose you're on the shore and you see that, should you obey the rule or should you go out and try and save him from drowning?
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: And that's where Opie has to kind of decide how he would handle that.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: And and he did uh he was real cute the way he said it.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: You wouldn't want him to drown.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: And so yeah, I thought that story would have been better if he would have told it when uh when George first ran away.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: He could be home with his family by now.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, it was good.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: I like how he let both boys kind of make their own decision, which should help them a lot in the future.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 32:05SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it would have been a pretty short episode if uh yes, yeah, it would have been a little earlier.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: But I'm I'm totally with you.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: I thought, hmm, yeah, if I had any problem with the episode, it was kind of that that I I thought Andy kind of let it go on too long, but but as far as uh uh story value, I thought there were still a lot of good bits to it that made it worthy of being a good episode.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: We get a double audience applause.
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: We get first our first applause right then, and then we come back for our our the great epilogues.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Right, right, and we're introduced to Barney's car, yeah.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: How about that?
- 32:57SPEAKER_03: I was surprised to see that.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: I didn't remember that.
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: I remember there's another great episode coming up at some point where Barney buys I thought that he was buying his first car, but oh yes, but according to this, he already had a car.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: Maybe it was a rental, yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: Might have been a rental, and and uh Andy thought it'd be funny to push it in front of the fire hydrant with OP.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, they're all like, oh boy, this is gonna get Barney's dander up.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: And uh so the Andy starts opening the door and he's gonna get get it ready to move.
- 33:40SPEAKER_03: And who is there but Barney with his pad out again?
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: You cannot fool him, he's always on duty.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, yeah.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Tampering unlawfully with a vehicle.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: Yes, gonna have to run them both in.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: But that's he's right.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: He is right again, but we don't get to see how Andy and Opie get out of this one.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: No, and we didn't get to see they also that he told George's dad that they'd Opie and and uh Andy would take uh little George back, so we just assumed that all worked out just fine, yeah.
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: And and no, no Ellie.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: You know, we had all these episodes of Ellie involved and becoming a little bit of a love interest, and um, she must have been really busy, her and Uncle Fred with the prescriptions.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, they had a lot of scripts coming into the drugstore, I guess.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: Maybe Aunt B was down there talking to her.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: That's why she wasn't able to help Opie with any sandwiches.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: Probably picking up some toilet water, right?
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the audience really went wild though after that one at the ending.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: And well, and next time, I think uh we've got Andy the matchmaker.
- 35:11SPEAKER_03: Uh oh, yeah, that should be good, right?
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: And yeah, just uh a little teaser for that.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: This is uh again, I think you mentioned it last time, but I think this is where Andy does some things to boost Barney's confidence.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: And so with oh nice ease, uh yeah, hopefully you'll tune in next time and we'll uh talk about that.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: I'm looking forward to that one.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, me too, Tim.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: And yeah, so thanks everybody for joining, and we'll see you next time on Nip It in the Bud.
