- 0:01Speaker 1: Some of the content of Patriots Unfiltered may not be
- 0:03Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. Welcome to
- 0:10Speaker 1: Patriot's Unfiltered. Mike do So. I won't say ably filled
- 0:15Speaker 1: my shoes, but he tried. The deuce is loose in Vegas.
- 0:18Speaker 1: He tried to give him an effort. He tried to
- 0:21Speaker 1: do the blog servations. I don't know, I just felt
- 0:23Speaker 1: a little jeal. I'll show you a little a little
- 0:25Speaker 1: down on the headcoach cut a little fit the little
- 0:27Speaker 1: red ass Freddie not happy with the with the coach. Well, no,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I mean just you know, it's like you're a good
- 0:32Speaker 1: place too. And we'll have a fill in host Christian Archie,
- 0:35Speaker 1: and Pedro writes in He's from Connecticut. I'd like to
- 0:38Speaker 1: say that the addition of Tamara Brown was a great
- 0:40Speaker 1: ad to the media roster. She provides great insight and
- 0:43Speaker 1: that's clearly full of Patriot's knowledge. I enjoyed listening to
- 0:45Speaker 1: her during the Patriots pregame show. Signed Tamara's mother, Fred
- 0:49Speaker 1: has been talking. Fred has been talking about trading Isaiah
- 0:51Speaker 1: Wynn for like a year and a half. So you
- 0:54Speaker 1: was doing it out the whole lop season. Oh, I know,
- 0:56Speaker 1: but who was the Patriots player? They played there? One
- 0:58Speaker 1: day at Cleveland. It was early. Windy said, uh, oh,
- 1:01Speaker 1: what do you expect when you build a stadium on
- 1:04Speaker 1: the ocean. You're unbelievable. It was oil canned boyd for Oh,
- 1:07Speaker 1: it's the Red Sox. This is Patriot's Unfiltered, fueled by Dungan.
- 1:14Speaker 1: All right, welcome into Patriots Unfiltered. Wake up, dude. That's right, folks.
- 1:18Speaker 1: It's Mike d on the mic here. And uh, just
- 1:20Speaker 1: got off a red eye about four hours ago, so
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'm a little bit a little bit bleary eyed. But
- 1:25Speaker 1: Fred is now. We were like two ships passing in
- 1:27Speaker 1: the night. Yeah, and he's now in Vegas. So unfortunately
- 1:30Speaker 1: for you, guys, you get me in the host chair.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But of course Paul is here, Alex is here to
- 1:34Speaker 1: save the day. And uh, and guys, it was it
- 1:37Speaker 1: was an interesting three days. I got my notes here.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I know everybody was worried about me. There were a
- 1:41Speaker 1: lot of wellness checks going on after I called him.
- 1:43Speaker 1: You must say, for taking a red eye from Las
- 1:45Speaker 1: Vegas of all places, you don't look dishoveled at all.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I appreciate that. Um, he's a handsome. Yeah, well, I
- 1:52Speaker 1: got about I don't know, I get handsome. I need
- 1:56Speaker 1: to know now. I guess it's that the dry Vegas
- 1:58Speaker 1: air must have helped me out. But you know a
- 2:00Speaker 1: little protocol talc though on the red eyes, like why
- 2:02Speaker 1: are we having a baby? Cry? Like why are we
- 2:04Speaker 1: bringing a baby on a red eye? Should we just
- 2:06Speaker 1: throw the baby into the luggage department like a soundproof cage.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I'm just surprised that there would be a baby on
- 2:14Speaker 1: a red eye? Got it? That's yeah, thanks Matt. That's
- 2:17Speaker 1: what I was listening to from about one am to
- 2:18Speaker 1: five am. I mean because I could think of some
- 2:20Speaker 1: of the you know, nightmare playing rides that I had
- 2:23Speaker 1: with my kids when they were really little, and I
- 2:26Speaker 1: would never even have thought about doing it on a
- 2:28Speaker 1: red eye. No, and and and the baby started crying,
- 2:30Speaker 1: like right as we're at the gate, and I my
- 2:31Speaker 1: initial having been a parent with a baby on a flight,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I feel sympathe, I feel bad, and I'm like, you
- 2:37Speaker 1: know what, I'm confident you're gonna get that baby to sleep.
- 2:40Speaker 1: We're not gonna hear a pete. I was wrong. See,
- 2:42Speaker 1: But I think about like when when did I don't
- 2:44Speaker 1: know about you. And when did your baby sleep the
- 2:46Speaker 1: least in the middle of the night, right that that
- 2:50Speaker 1: was certainly the case. And one other bone to pick two, like,
- 2:53Speaker 1: if you're not watching TV on the Red Eye, can
- 2:55Speaker 1: you just turn it down? Like the woman next to
- 2:57Speaker 1: me in the middle seat, she was watching like one
- 2:59Speaker 1: of those like a scared straight prison shows, you know,
- 3:02Speaker 1: where they like bring kids in or something. A lot
- 3:04Speaker 1: of flashing though, So it's just just so hard to
- 3:06Speaker 1: close your eyes and you've got the light glaring and everything.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And you can buy those nice little satin eye covers
- 3:13Speaker 1: with like ice in it, I know, and I was
- 3:15Speaker 1: thinking about those things. I was thinking about it. Luckily
- 3:18Speaker 1: I had it with the logo branded just like your
- 3:20Speaker 1: little training camp chain don't bother Me Raiders. Uh yeah,
- 3:23Speaker 1: it was so it was experienced, but I felt like
- 3:26Speaker 1: I had to get in here and uh, you know, share,
- 3:28Speaker 1: share my insights and let everybody know that I'm okay
- 3:30Speaker 1: after watching those joint practices. So if you guys, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 1: if you want to press me on it, I got
- 3:34Speaker 1: my like I said, I got my notes. Here. Give
- 3:36Speaker 1: us a call A five five what pats five hundred sounds?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Good web radio radio at paveway its dot com. You
- 3:44Speaker 1: guys know what it is. Give give us a shout out.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I can, you know, give you any insight in terms
- 3:48Speaker 1: of what we saw. But so first and most for you, dude,
- 3:52Speaker 1: yeah is I am just really happy to see you
- 3:54Speaker 1: because last I spoke with you on Tuesday during the show,
- 3:59Speaker 1: toward the end of the show, when Fred and I
- 4:00Speaker 1: were wrapping up, you chimed in and I really feared
- 4:04Speaker 1: for your sake. I did. I was thinking about wandering
- 4:06Speaker 1: off into the desert. I thought you were going to
- 4:08Speaker 1: hurt yourself. Get some patay, go on a personal journey
- 4:11Speaker 1: to figure out what's going on with the I know
- 4:13Speaker 1: the Patriots weren't great on Tuesday. It was a little
- 4:16Speaker 1: better on Wednesday, so they had something to build on,
- 4:18Speaker 1: which I think is if we're in a place where
- 4:20Speaker 1: you're like considering payote to reset your mindset on this team,
- 4:24Speaker 1: I need to go on I need to go on
- 4:26Speaker 1: a journey. No, you know. And it was so depressed.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And I gotta say this though, I think when you
- 4:31Speaker 1: got when I first spoke with you, guys, that was
- 4:33Speaker 1: the first practice and I was just blown away by
- 4:36Speaker 1: how good Davante Adams and Hunter renfro was and that
- 4:39Speaker 1: was like kind of my initial woe moment, because, as
- 4:42Speaker 1: I wrote in the blogs, we were kind of stuck
- 4:44Speaker 1: at the end of the sidelines of three fields, so
- 4:47Speaker 1: it was so hard to see, especially the Patriots. We
- 4:49Speaker 1: got tons of access to what the Raiders were doing.
- 4:52Speaker 1: You could hear their coaches and all that, but a
- 4:54Speaker 1: lot of the one on ones with the Raiders receivers
- 4:56Speaker 1: and the Patriots dbs took place right in front of us.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And I think when I spoke with you guys, it
- 5:01Speaker 1: had been you know, that initial impression of just wow,
- 5:04Speaker 1: this is what you know and I haven't been only
- 5:06Speaker 1: been here since twenty nineteen. This is what like elite
- 5:08Speaker 1: receiver play looks like. This is what separation looks like.
- 5:12Speaker 1: This is what an uncoverable slot receiver that I wished
- 5:15Speaker 1: to death that we had looks like. So those were
- 5:18Speaker 1: the things that we're kind of jumping out. But um,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know, as as as you read, Paul, and as
- 5:23Speaker 1: you mentioned, I do think that they found a little
- 5:25Speaker 1: bit of of of a stride. I don't think that
- 5:27Speaker 1: they were overly explosive, but I think when they were
- 5:31Speaker 1: in gotta have at moments. At the end of the
- 5:33Speaker 1: two practices they made, they made some really nice plays
- 5:35Speaker 1: the defense. The first day got off the field, they
- 5:38Speaker 1: almost got off the field. The second day on the
- 5:39Speaker 1: final drill when it was you know, two minutes, I
- 5:41Speaker 1: think they put like fifty seconds on the clock. It
- 5:44Speaker 1: was all you know, spike in the ball, clock management
- 5:47Speaker 1: and all that stuff. But I think what I kind
- 5:50Speaker 1: of came away with and what Evan's going to call
- 5:52Speaker 1: into in an hour to give his takes as well. Um,
- 5:56Speaker 1: you know, what I kind of have come away with
- 5:58Speaker 1: is the question how much can the Patriots game plan
- 6:01Speaker 1: and help and and fix the problems we've seen? How
- 6:04Speaker 1: Because that's what do you keep hearing? You keep hearing, Well,
- 6:08Speaker 1: this is just we're working on fundamentals. There's no game
- 6:11Speaker 1: plans going on. There's and of course of course, but
- 6:14Speaker 1: at the same time, like you watch the Raiders offense
- 6:16Speaker 1: and it doesn't look like they're having any problems not
- 6:19Speaker 1: having a game plan like they're they're doing pretty well.
- 6:21Speaker 1: No one's game planning at this time of year. It's
- 6:24Speaker 1: just man on man. Now, Your question is a good one,
- 6:26Speaker 1: like how much does when when you know when Bill
- 6:29Speaker 1: gets into that process. How much does that help level
- 6:32Speaker 1: the playing field? Yeah, And and the kind of thing
- 6:34Speaker 1: I came away with a little bit that gave me
- 6:36Speaker 1: some some inner piece when I when I was on
- 6:38Speaker 1: my payote trip out in the desert, was just that,
- 6:41Speaker 1: you know, there are moments throughout the summer where Mac
- 6:44Speaker 1: Jones and the offensive looked pretty good. And I think
- 6:46Speaker 1: it's when they've kind of been spread out doing Mac
- 6:48Speaker 1: does best. And you know there's some moments where all right,
- 6:50Speaker 1: they moved the ball. That was certainly the case in
- 6:51Speaker 1: the in the two minute drills the last couple of days.
- 6:54Speaker 1: And so I guess what I came away thinking was
- 6:56Speaker 1: that they know what works for Mac. They're not going
- 6:59Speaker 1: to keep trying to beat the dead horse. When they
- 7:00Speaker 1: get into Miami, they're gonna find this is the stuff
- 7:03Speaker 1: that's been working for us, this is what we can
- 7:05Speaker 1: try to do. So, you know, I'm not saying that
- 7:07Speaker 1: I'm fully confident that all of a sudden it's it's
- 7:10Speaker 1: gonna be a productive offense that can put together a
- 7:13Speaker 1: twelve play eighty five yard drive and and and put
- 7:17Speaker 1: up seven points. But I do think that they'll lean
- 7:19Speaker 1: into their strengths, and it won't be as completely sporadic
- 7:23Speaker 1: as as it kind of been in the early periods
- 7:25Speaker 1: of the joint practices. Sure, sure, and I do think.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And it was funny because when when Mike is talking Alex,
- 7:31Speaker 1: you know, it was like really, I mean dark stuff.
- 7:35Speaker 1: You know, He's like the doors this is the end
- 7:37Speaker 1: was playing in the background because they would they I
- 7:38Speaker 1: guess they really super hungover and no, they just had
- 7:41Speaker 1: a bad day. I just want to say, for the record,
- 7:44Speaker 1: you guys want to guess how many how many total
- 7:46Speaker 1: beers I had when I was there, Well, I'm too Oh,
- 7:49Speaker 1: I was gonna go with zero because I wasn't there too.
- 7:52Speaker 1: If Matt and I were there, it would have been
- 7:53Speaker 1: a lot higher than that. You don't come off so hot,
- 7:57Speaker 1: like well, here's the thing I mean I had I
- 7:58Speaker 1: did the night we went out Corona Light was was
- 8:01Speaker 1: was wonderful with a little line with didn't have a
- 8:03Speaker 1: hole in it. Matt, certainly that's why you had to
- 8:06Speaker 1: because your first one had a hole in it. Then
- 8:07Speaker 1: I got to the restaurant bled you know, it was
- 8:09Speaker 1: just so bloody hot and you're in the sun and
- 8:11Speaker 1: if you really wanted to see anything while you were
- 8:13Speaker 1: on the sideline. You had to be out in the sun.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So that was like, I can't handle going into a
- 8:18Speaker 1: day like this with a hangover and then having to
- 8:20Speaker 1: go stand underneath the desert sun for for I mean
- 8:23Speaker 1: two hours, two and a half hours. It was hot.
- 8:25Speaker 1: So I was I was a good boy, and I
- 8:27Speaker 1: also want to say my perdam But as he was,
- 8:29Speaker 1: as he was talking about all the things that went
- 8:31Speaker 1: wrong in the first day, you know, and it got
- 8:34Speaker 1: to the point we were, you know, fred and I
- 8:35Speaker 1: would kind of laughing with him, and then we kind
- 8:36Speaker 1: of got whoa. He's like really really upset about this,
- 8:40Speaker 1: So you know, you sort of want to step back
- 8:43Speaker 1: and you're like, well, you know, dudes, it's just practice,
- 8:45Speaker 1: like and you know, and you want to say it's
- 8:47Speaker 1: not that bad, but I didn't see it, so I can't,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you know, and that right, and I didn't see it,
- 8:53Speaker 1: so I can't say, well, it's not that bad, dude.
- 8:55Speaker 1: They weren't that bad, Like you know, what about this?
- 8:57Speaker 1: What about that? And I had a flashback to what
- 8:59Speaker 1: I was in high school, right, so I have my
- 9:02Speaker 1: high school girlfriend got a haircut and I hadn't seen
- 9:05Speaker 1: it and she was like over the top depressed, and
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with her and she's lik in tears,
- 9:11Speaker 1: and this is going off for like ten minutes, and
- 9:13Speaker 1: I'm thinking of myself the whole time. You can't say
- 9:16Speaker 1: it's not that bad. You can't say, don't say it's
- 9:18Speaker 1: not that bad. Don't say it, don't say it. Sure enough,
- 9:21Speaker 1: I eventually said it's not that bad yet even say it.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And that's all I could think about. You were, like
- 9:29Speaker 1: someone's gonna get you were in there, but you were
- 9:33Speaker 1: in there. You think you know everything, You weren't even there.
- 9:36Speaker 1: You know, it's just I mean, looking back at my
- 9:37Speaker 1: notes from that day, though, you know it's it's I mean,
- 9:40Speaker 1: first of all, Davante Adams, I mean he must have
- 9:42Speaker 1: caught like thirty balls over two days. I mean he
- 9:45Speaker 1: had more catches than the Patriots probably completed in either
- 9:48Speaker 1: of the practices, especially the first day. So how many
- 9:51Speaker 1: of those would he have completed at Baker Mayfield or
- 9:53Speaker 1: Saint Darnold with throwing it to him, I'm gonna go
- 9:55Speaker 1: with cut in half. Maybe maybe that much. But you know,
- 9:58Speaker 1: just looking at like the zone eleven on eleven period,
- 10:01Speaker 1: where it was you know, run stuff. They hit one,
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know, the one nice play, of course, there's always
- 10:06Speaker 1: one to DeVante Parker was a nice little scene touchdown. Hey,
- 10:09Speaker 1: we feel good for a second, you know, but then
- 10:11Speaker 1: incomplete thirty seven pressure in his face, fifteen pass, breakup,
- 10:15Speaker 1: thirty eight runs stuff incomplete, you know, like that's the period,
- 10:18Speaker 1: Like that's what I was watching. And number there's just nothing.
- 10:20Speaker 1: The numbers that day. And I don't get lost in
- 10:22Speaker 1: the numbers, as you guys all know, but the numbers
- 10:24Speaker 1: that day were pretty bad. They were and uh, you know,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and I mean the other thing that I wrote about
- 10:30Speaker 1: this and blogs actually I talked about it and and
- 10:32Speaker 1: if you guys haven't read or listened to the camp cast,
- 10:35Speaker 1: me and Evan we banged out like fifteen minutes each
- 10:36Speaker 1: on those, like really running down things of how we
- 10:39Speaker 1: were feeling. But just the volume, the volume of read
- 10:42Speaker 1: the blogs, the volume of of work that they did,
- 10:46Speaker 1: like they had so many eleven on eleven periods yesterday
- 10:49Speaker 1: of middle of everybody read Zone Situational. It was not like,
- 10:54Speaker 1: all right, let's do this for a little bit and
- 10:55Speaker 1: now kick off and I will do this a little punt.
- 10:57Speaker 1: It was just eleven after rup extraplate from that, Do
- 11:00Speaker 1: you guys think we'll see much of the starters, you know,
- 11:03Speaker 1: if they got that much work, I have my doubts. Yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I mean I doubt you know, you had you sent
- 11:08Speaker 1: out your roundtable, uh, you know, questions about that, and
- 11:11Speaker 1: I think maybe we'll get a cameo. But based on
- 11:14Speaker 1: the amount that that was my thought process, based on
- 11:16Speaker 1: the amount of work they just got on the practice
- 11:17Speaker 1: field in that heat too, um, which wasn't quite as
- 11:22Speaker 1: bad as a lot of people I know that they
- 11:23Speaker 1: were saying, I think was the worst. The last day.
- 11:26Speaker 1: It actually rained for like a minute before we got there.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I know, it's weird, and there were some clouds so
- 11:31Speaker 1: that broke the heat funk. It would rain more in
- 11:34Speaker 1: Vegas during camp than the parties, and it's still hot
- 11:38Speaker 1: like to raining out and you're like, people get so
- 11:41Speaker 1: excited when it rains out there, but everything gets like
- 11:43Speaker 1: slick and it's it's it's kind of so do you
- 11:45Speaker 1: think that you'll see mac at all? I'm really that's
- 11:48Speaker 1: a that's my that's a big question. That's I mean,
- 11:50Speaker 1: that's really that's why I put it in the questions
- 11:52Speaker 1: of like, do you think they need it. I mean
- 11:54Speaker 1: I feel like I think they need it. Yeah, And
- 11:57Speaker 1: I just don't think this is it matter if he goes,
- 12:00Speaker 1: I think they'll play, you know, at all. I would
- 12:03Speaker 1: not play jude On. I just think he was a
- 12:06Speaker 1: standout through these practices. He was like Max Crosby was
- 12:10Speaker 1: on the other side. I mean Max Crosby talk about
- 12:12Speaker 1: another star. Um just watching him even warm up, getting
- 12:16Speaker 1: down on a four point stance, like popping out like
- 12:19Speaker 1: over and over and over. Um, you know, between him
- 12:22Speaker 1: and Chandler Jones on the two sides of that defense,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I think they've got some good pieces. But I think
- 12:26Speaker 1: jude On even uch was was good. But I just
- 12:29Speaker 1: lock up the guys. You can't afford to lose him.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I'd even say maybe John U. Smith, you know, just
- 12:34Speaker 1: some of those high end guys. I don't know, I
- 12:36Speaker 1: have no I have no problem if they don't choose
- 12:39Speaker 1: to play any of them. But if they do, give
- 12:41Speaker 1: him a cameo like last week, you know, and out,
- 12:45Speaker 1: you know, enjoy yourself over there or try to as
- 12:48Speaker 1: best you can. Well, let's let's hop to the phone's
- 12:51Speaker 1: real quick. We are a Christian hanging on here, getting
- 12:53Speaker 1: in early Christian, let's go, Oh, where's my Sorry, I'm
- 12:57Speaker 1: I got it, Maddie. Just hang with me everybody today,
- 13:02Speaker 1: Hey Christian, what's up? Hey you guys. Well, just like
- 13:06Speaker 1: this morning right here on the radio, seems like we're
- 13:08Speaker 1: having technical difficulties with the team here a little bit.
- 13:13Speaker 1: I don't feel good and I don't feel good about
- 13:17Speaker 1: the offense. I feel good about the defensive front. Okay,
- 13:21Speaker 1: I don't know if that's enough to win US games
- 13:23Speaker 1: at this point, but I just don't feel good. How
- 13:26Speaker 1: can you guys help me feel good about something? And
- 13:29Speaker 1: one more thing. A couple of weeks ago, when I
- 13:31Speaker 1: called him about James White's retirement, I made a comment
- 13:34Speaker 1: about Barry standards. I was not talking about his skill set, guy,
- 13:38Speaker 1: I was talking about the way he handles himself after
- 13:40Speaker 1: he scored a touchdown. Was his classy as a Barry standard? Gotcha?
- 13:47Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know what to tell you. I mean,
- 13:48Speaker 1: the best I can do is tell you what I
- 13:50Speaker 1: said earlier. Of that, I think that, and I thought
- 13:52Speaker 1: Josh McDaniel's comments were just interesting. Listen to him. Everybody
- 13:56Speaker 1: that the Boston media jumped in there. Thanks Christian. You
- 14:01Speaker 1: know it's h he you know, he just said, you're
- 14:04Speaker 1: trying to work on things that are hard. You're not
- 14:06Speaker 1: going out there doing what you do well. You're trying
- 14:08Speaker 1: to do the things that you're having trouble doing. And
- 14:10Speaker 1: he said, and you know, we're trying to make it
- 14:12Speaker 1: hard on them too. So I don't know, though, I
- 14:15Speaker 1: just I really don't know what to expect in Miami.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I have some hope that they're going to lean into
- 14:18Speaker 1: what they do well and as we said, like how
- 14:20Speaker 1: much can gain planning save? But but I'm not going
- 14:22Speaker 1: to sit here and tell you a couple of things.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I mean, you know, on the surface, these are superficial
- 14:26Speaker 1: things because I have no idea what's going on in
- 14:28Speaker 1: Dolphins camp as a whole. I know today evidently the
- 14:32Speaker 1: whole stool got the flu. Evidently everybody on my They
- 14:35Speaker 1: canceled practice today. Oh where Miami, Yeah, because they had
- 14:38Speaker 1: so many people that were sick. So Mike McDaniel ended
- 14:42Speaker 1: up canceling practice because he wants to make sure that
- 14:44Speaker 1: they can play in the game Saturday. So you know,
- 14:49Speaker 1: currently right now, things don't look so hot. But I
- 14:52Speaker 1: will say, on the surface, they're doing the same exact
- 14:54Speaker 1: thing you're doing. They're putting an entirely new offense in
- 14:57Speaker 1: and it's coincidentally the same offense that you're trying to implement.
- 15:03Speaker 1: So maybe they're not going to be quite ready either,
- 15:06Speaker 1: you know, at the outside of the season. Yeah, because
- 15:08Speaker 1: it looks like right now to you a point, Mike,
- 15:12Speaker 1: I think they're going to probably gravitate toward the things
- 15:14Speaker 1: that they know that Mac is going to have success with,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and that's quick, short passes. Yeah, spread them out, get
- 15:20Speaker 1: them in the shotgun. We've seen teases of the RPO stuff,
- 15:23Speaker 1: which I mean, I do wonder what they're keeping under
- 15:25Speaker 1: wraps to to you know, to what extent, you know,
- 15:28Speaker 1: the all the outside zone stuff. But I think there
- 15:31Speaker 1: are probably elements that they're that they're keeping close to
- 15:33Speaker 1: the vest too, that they'll work on the next couple
- 15:35Speaker 1: of weeks. But I think it comes down to Judeon
- 15:38Speaker 1: and Barmore and Uche and those guys. I think those
- 15:40Speaker 1: guys have to be really good to keep opposing offenses
- 15:44Speaker 1: from you know, attacking their secondary. I mean, I think
- 15:46Speaker 1: the secondary is okay, but it's going to be the
- 15:49Speaker 1: key early in the season. They're gonna need the defense
- 15:52Speaker 1: to keep them in some games, yep, because I don't
- 15:54Speaker 1: think that they're equipped right now to getting a thirty
- 15:58Speaker 1: plus shootout, not from what we've seen in practice anyway.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I mean there's there, certainly hasn't been the consistency. I'd
- 16:05Speaker 1: also point out to Damian Harris Scott. He left practice
- 16:07Speaker 1: yesterday and didn't return. So that's you know, Harris win
- 16:10Speaker 1: in Agalore. But when in Agalore came, they walked back,
- 16:14Speaker 1: They walked back into the thing. Yeah, he spoke, he
- 16:19Speaker 1: seemed fine, he said he was fine. He played Friday. Cramping,
- 16:22Speaker 1: that's what we were like, scramping, right, it's too hot
- 16:24Speaker 1: out cramps, you get cramps right, probably um when getting
- 16:28Speaker 1: the hand looked at though, So I don't know if
- 16:30Speaker 1: that was a new thing or a thing that was
- 16:34Speaker 1: related to what kept him out last week. Um, But
- 16:38Speaker 1: you know, I think probably we can ask Evin about
- 16:40Speaker 1: it too, because he he did get a little bit
- 16:42Speaker 1: of the trench. Guys. Um, justin Haran not not not
- 16:46Speaker 1: great against Max Crossby. As you know, that's a tough
- 16:48Speaker 1: matchup for sure, But if your backup tackle against one
- 16:51Speaker 1: of the better pass rushers in football, probably shouldn't be
- 16:53Speaker 1: a great matchup. But doesn't you know. I'm not not
- 16:56Speaker 1: happy about it. No, And I also wonder how much
- 17:00Speaker 1: of an issue is the protection. I think that's what
- 17:02Speaker 1: people are glaumbing onto a little bit more so than
- 17:04Speaker 1: like the new offense being hard. One that I wanted
- 17:07Speaker 1: to ask you about, Alex. I don't know if you
- 17:10Speaker 1: read any of these things either, but they were talking
- 17:13Speaker 1: about how the you know, it was a little bit
- 17:14Speaker 1: better yesterday, the timing was a little bit better. And
- 17:18Speaker 1: then I'm looking at pretty much everybody's saying, well, you know,
- 17:20Speaker 1: a play that may have been a sack or um.
- 17:23Speaker 1: You know, some of the people actually compiled those stats
- 17:26Speaker 1: and they include sacks, but they deemed sacks and I
- 17:29Speaker 1: saw five sacks. Yeah, so it's like, you know, twenty
- 17:33Speaker 1: for twenty four with five sacks, and I'm like, well,
- 17:35Speaker 1: that ain't good. Like the three of the ball thirty
- 17:38Speaker 1: times and they got sacked five like that, that's not
- 17:41Speaker 1: really good. I mean, I don't know how they can tell.
- 17:43Speaker 1: It's so it's so hard to determine because I think
- 17:46Speaker 1: on one time in the two minute drill, it looked
- 17:48Speaker 1: like the pocket completely collapsed around Mac, which usually they
- 17:51Speaker 1: would have blown dead. But I mean he squirt it
- 17:53Speaker 1: out in a way that made me feel like nobody
- 17:55Speaker 1: really actually got a hand on him like that, and
- 17:58Speaker 1: they gave it to him, and some of the yeah,
- 17:59Speaker 1: and some of the write ups had that play sort
- 18:02Speaker 1: of included not as a sack, Yeah, like that. He
- 18:04Speaker 1: avoided pressure and scrambled. So it's hard and I was
- 18:06Speaker 1: mentioned into Paul. One of the things I enjoyed was
- 18:09Speaker 1: early in one of the eleven on eleven periods, I
- 18:12Speaker 1: was right next to the Raiders sideline so that you
- 18:15Speaker 1: could hear carmenber Solo everything he said to his offensive line,
- 18:20Speaker 1: which was just really interesting. I mean a lot of
- 18:22Speaker 1: it's so complex. I'm like, I don't I don't know
- 18:24Speaker 1: what the hell he's talking about right now, but you
- 18:26Speaker 1: could tell on some of the plays where because the
- 18:28Speaker 1: run plays are tough too, and should just ask Kevin Yeah,
- 18:31Speaker 1: I know, I don't even know if he knows, but uh,
- 18:33Speaker 1: you know, it looked like, oh man, if they're running
- 18:35Speaker 1: into a crowd right there, where would he been tackled?
- 18:37Speaker 1: Would he have squirted through? I don't know, but it
- 18:39Speaker 1: was good because you could hear the offensive line coach
- 18:42Speaker 1: be like, no, no, no, we got blown up on
- 18:43Speaker 1: that where you're like, all right, that that wasn't good
- 18:45Speaker 1: play that check your note, bluck. I mean it was
- 18:49Speaker 1: it was cool. I mean, you don't really ever get
- 18:50Speaker 1: a chance to stand near the Patriots coaches. The other
- 18:52Speaker 1: thing that was fun yesterday was red zone one on ones,
- 18:56Speaker 1: which is just I mean, Hunter Renfrol good luck, like
- 18:59Speaker 1: he just open um. But Mike Pellegrino and Mick Lombardi
- 19:05Speaker 1: trash talk at each other like okay, those crappy routes
- 19:08Speaker 1: out of here, you know, like you know, like the
- 19:10Speaker 1: you know, a little John. But the thing that I
- 19:12Speaker 1: liked though about the overall practice is you could just
- 19:14Speaker 1: tell that there was a mutual respect between the teams.
- 19:16Speaker 1: There was no nobody was down on the ground, there
- 19:19Speaker 1: was no scuffles um, there was you know, limited taunting
- 19:23Speaker 1: and and and trash talking between the players. It's just
- 19:25Speaker 1: it seemed like over and Josh pointed out too in
- 19:27Speaker 1: his press conference, it's like two teams that understand we're
- 19:29Speaker 1: here to work and get better, and uh, you know,
- 19:32Speaker 1: to be honest, I came out of there kind of
- 19:34Speaker 1: feeling like I'm rooting for the Raiders a little bit,
- 19:36Speaker 1: you know, just like I just like that. I'm one
- 19:38Speaker 1: of the patriots. But that's but as far as the AFC,
- 19:40Speaker 1: you know, West Coast, I mean, it's comprised of all guys.
- 19:43Speaker 1: It's hard, so it's hard not to It's like Jacob Johnson.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Everywhere you look, there's like a it's like, oh there's
- 19:50Speaker 1: Jermaine or Luminore who talk about issues. You have an
- 19:52Speaker 1: issue the kind of line. And I saw that. I
- 19:55Speaker 1: think the new I apologize the new the new writer
- 19:59Speaker 1: for the Athletic. Oh yeah, yeah, I met him, Chad,
- 20:02Speaker 1: Chad Graff, Okay, Chad. I happened to see an item
- 20:06Speaker 1: that he included in his in his round up that
- 20:09Speaker 1: he's sort of speculated. I think it was him. You know,
- 20:12Speaker 1: maybe you know what Dallas Isaiah Win talk about trade.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Maybe you know the Raiders they have some cap space.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Maybe that would make sense. My initial daughter immediately yesterday
- 20:21Speaker 1: when the news of the Dallas situation with Tyren Smith,
- 20:24Speaker 1: he looks like he's gonna miss, if not the whole season,
- 20:27Speaker 1: close to it, and maybe you go to Dallas. Dalla
- 20:29Speaker 1: was always willing to throw money around. It's just so
- 20:32Speaker 1: tough because I don't know what you got behind him.
- 20:34Speaker 1: It's scary, it's it's that's what I don't understand, And
- 20:37Speaker 1: everybody is like completely ready to just say. And I'm
- 20:40Speaker 1: not the hugest Isaiah Winn fan. I think he's average,
- 20:44Speaker 1: but I think he's better than the guys that are
- 20:46Speaker 1: behind him. Yeah, you know, And I'm not a big
- 20:49Speaker 1: fan of well was he worth ten million dollars? Like? No,
- 20:52Speaker 1: is he better than the guy who will be playing
- 20:54Speaker 1: in his stead? That's the only thing that matters to me. Yeah,
- 20:57Speaker 1: Like that is the only thing that that matters to me.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Is is he better than Haran? Is he better? Thank
- 21:01Speaker 1: just or you know, is he better than a whin?
- 21:05Speaker 1: You at right tackle? And you could put Handbright at
- 21:07Speaker 1: left at right guard? But whoever? You know, we had
- 21:10Speaker 1: an ASPFW that I'm you know, just started working on
- 21:12Speaker 1: the mail back for next week. What about switching them
- 21:14Speaker 1: win in in a whin you Now, I haven't seen
- 21:18Speaker 1: Win take even a rep at guard, So I don't
- 21:21Speaker 1: know if Freddie's all pro guard ceiling or a basement. Actually, um,
- 21:28Speaker 1: I don't know if that's in the offing. But I
- 21:31Speaker 1: just don't know if anybody behind Win is any better
- 21:33Speaker 1: than him. I feel the same way about the receivers,
- 21:35Speaker 1: like the people want to trade one of the receivers,
- 21:37Speaker 1: maybe less so now after, But I don't know what's now.
- 21:40Speaker 1: You know, um, you know Wilkerson Thorton obviously not there.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Um and and you know it's just a little Jordan
- 21:47Speaker 1: getting opportunities. Didn't really do much in a couple of days.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I had a good one with Fred. Oh yeah, there's
- 21:52Speaker 1: a big little Jordan fan movement listening. I think I
- 21:55Speaker 1: think he has a chance to make the team now.
- 21:57Speaker 1: And I sort of talked about it a little bit.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I think, like, you know, someone said, you know, why not,
- 22:05Speaker 1: you know, keep some of these guys that can play positions,
- 22:09Speaker 1: you know, instead of a Cody Davis or you know,
- 22:12Speaker 1: someone like that, why not keep a little joint humper.
- 22:15Speaker 1: I go, well, yeah, you could do that, I mean,
- 22:17Speaker 1: swapping one for one. But what do you mean he's
- 22:21Speaker 1: your fifth receiver. He's not playing over any of those
- 22:23Speaker 1: top four barring injuries, just like Cody Davis will not
- 22:26Speaker 1: play safety barring injuries to any of the top four,
- 22:29Speaker 1: maybe even five guys at safety. Yeah, I don't care.
- 22:32Speaker 1: A lot of people seem like they want him to
- 22:34Speaker 1: play tight end though they're trying to speak it into existence.
- 22:38Speaker 1: But you know who started that, right? You don't watch
- 22:40Speaker 1: the preseason games? Huh, hurt feeling watch the preseason. I
- 22:46Speaker 1: don't get no time. I was informed that you do
- 22:56Speaker 1: wonderful to did that very well, That's exactly what I
- 22:58Speaker 1: told you to say things. That's right, So I did,
- 23:01Speaker 1: h stop. I did bring that up on the on
- 23:04Speaker 1: the show, and I was very very surprised, pleasantly so
- 23:08Speaker 1: to hear Bill sort of entertain it the next day
- 23:11Speaker 1: in his press conference that someone asked him about it. Yeah,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and he's like, yeah, he has some tight end qualities
- 23:16Speaker 1: and I was like, WHOA. I don't know if sometimes
- 23:18Speaker 1: you just pull them out. And it was too he
- 23:21Speaker 1: kind of spent some time on him. But my point
- 23:23Speaker 1: is he will not play wide receiver over the Big four.
- 23:28Speaker 1: He will not play tight end over Smith or Henry. Yeah,
- 23:32Speaker 1: I'm not telling you he'll never get on the field
- 23:34Speaker 1: in those roles. But he's not going to be a
- 23:37Speaker 1: key l If he makes the team, it's going to
- 23:40Speaker 1: be as a reserve slash special teams player. And at
- 23:44Speaker 1: six to four, I think he offers more special teams
- 23:47Speaker 1: value in coverage and you know, traditional special teams, not
- 23:50Speaker 1: returner like Trey Nixon to me, is a return option.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Do you want him to return punts for you? Okay,
- 23:56Speaker 1: then go with him instead of Humphrey. If you want
- 23:59Speaker 1: someone who can cover, it's Humphrey. I mean he's got
- 24:02Speaker 1: the you know, the much bigger frame. I think he's
- 24:04Speaker 1: much more physical and able to do some of those
- 24:07Speaker 1: things you've brought up. An interesting one, Paul, I just
- 24:09Speaker 1: want to point out, don't know if you caught it
- 24:10Speaker 1: in the block servations yesterday, but during they only had
- 24:13Speaker 1: a one punt punt period and Brennan Schooler was the
- 24:18Speaker 1: personal protector and Cody Davis was standing like not on
- 24:22Speaker 1: the sideline, but like in back with like Jack Bailey,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I think Cody Davis is a guy that could go.
- 24:27Speaker 1: And we've sort of thrown this out there a little
- 24:29Speaker 1: bit um to Marcus Mitchell. Another one is I think
- 24:35Speaker 1: he's a core four special teams guy in the preseason
- 24:37Speaker 1: and that's uh, you know, punt punt return, kickoff, kickoff return.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Those guys stay now. Cody Davis has been one of
- 24:45Speaker 1: those guys since he's been here. Ye. At some point
- 24:48Speaker 1: I think you look at those and you say, does
- 24:53Speaker 1: to Marcus Mitchell potentially have the ability to be a
- 24:56Speaker 1: defensive lineman and maybe in two years he can he
- 25:00Speaker 1: can be a contributor for us up front, whereas Cody
- 25:02Speaker 1: Davis does not have that potential. Yeah, that was secondary.
- 25:05Speaker 1: That was the cool thing because it was on the
- 25:07Speaker 1: field closest to us, so you could hear how much
- 25:10Speaker 1: that position entails. Like usually we'd be up on the
- 25:12Speaker 1: you know, up on the rat up on the side
- 25:14Speaker 1: of the stadium, and you're like, oh, he's in there.
- 25:16Speaker 1: But like I could hear all the protection calls he's making.
- 25:19Speaker 1: You know, It's like you could get a full grasp
- 25:21Speaker 1: of like this is an important role. And there isn't
- 25:24Speaker 1: a lot of special teams periods that they're doing right now.
- 25:26Speaker 1: This is this is on purpose. They're going against a
- 25:29Speaker 1: live pump block team and they want to see if
- 25:31Speaker 1: this kid can identify and work with whatever new problem
- 25:35Speaker 1: they present. They're not running the Patriots pump block operation.
- 25:39Speaker 1: So I think that's definitely something that's something to consider.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And that's like, you know, the last three or four
- 25:45Speaker 1: spots that we we deem the last three or four
- 25:48Speaker 1: I mean, they can go in a number of ways.
- 25:51Speaker 1: You know they can go in a number of ways.
- 25:53Speaker 1: You just don't know the kind. You know, the value
- 25:55Speaker 1: that they're looking for and exactly what you know. And
- 25:58Speaker 1: Bill always talks about you get young players and you
- 26:01Speaker 1: try to project you know, Cody Davis has probably at
- 26:04Speaker 1: a level that's much higher right now than Brendon School
- 26:07Speaker 1: or DeMarcus Mitchell. But is he going sort of horizontal
- 26:14Speaker 1: while the rookies are vertical and you have to sort
- 26:17Speaker 1: of extrapolate, well, when they're at the same experienced level
- 26:22Speaker 1: that Cody Davis, will they be at a higher level?
- 26:24Speaker 1: You know? And I used Cody Davis not because I'm
- 26:26Speaker 1: looking to kick him off the team. I'm just using
- 26:28Speaker 1: as a special team's example. Justin Bethel. A lot of
- 26:32Speaker 1: people have brought up same kind of thing. Yeah, I
- 26:35Speaker 1: think Bethel gives you a little bit more in terms
- 26:37Speaker 1: of value in an emergency. In the secondary. He's played
- 26:42Speaker 1: in the past and hasn't been terrible. He made a
- 26:45Speaker 1: huge play in the Dallas game if you recall not
- 26:48Speaker 1: going to pass in the end zone that ended up
- 26:50Speaker 1: getting intercepted. You sparked my memory too. One of the
- 26:53Speaker 1: one on ones yesterday. Evidently he got burned Mike has
- 26:57Speaker 1: this like devilish look on it was. It's just a
- 27:00Speaker 1: the rep pop back into my mind of like he
- 27:03Speaker 1: just kind of he just kind of gave up like
- 27:04Speaker 1: he was. Yeah. I mean it was such a like
- 27:07Speaker 1: double move that it wasn't even close. But you know,
- 27:09Speaker 1: I think it really hard, really hard things to do.
- 27:11Speaker 1: And another thing, Paul May, I should probably bring up
- 27:13Speaker 1: the Jalen Mills thing too, because I think that's a good,
- 27:15Speaker 1: good context thing. The first day of one on ones,
- 27:18Speaker 1: they're in the middle of the field and that was
- 27:20Speaker 1: when you just could see DeVante Parker. I'm sorry, I
- 27:24Speaker 1: wish it was DeVante Adams. Just that that that the
- 27:30Speaker 1: speed that he has, the size, the ability to catch
- 27:33Speaker 1: the ball anything close to him, Um, you know, and
- 27:36Speaker 1: and and Mills struggled. I mean, he had the whole
- 27:39Speaker 1: field to work with, so obviously it's it's a really
- 27:41Speaker 1: tough task for Mills. A lot of the narrative was then,
- 27:44Speaker 1: oh but day two, Mills back that, well, they moved
- 27:46Speaker 1: to like the five yard line, so there's much less
- 27:49Speaker 1: ground to cover, and it's still a handful. They were
- 27:51Speaker 1: still close. And I'll say, in Mills's defense, like a
- 27:55Speaker 1: good receiver should beat a good corner, you know, and
- 27:58Speaker 1: one on one more often than not. Yeah, it's that's
- 28:01Speaker 1: for sure. And you know the lack of space helped
- 28:04Speaker 1: a little bit. Um. But yeah, I'm sorry, I'm gonna
- 28:07Speaker 1: try to stop gushing over DeVante Adams. But she don't come.
- 28:11Speaker 1: It was it was it was striking who by the way,
- 28:14Speaker 1: funny side note, uh um Tamara and Uh. I think
- 28:18Speaker 1: she was with Emma. Maybe they had to like go
- 28:20Speaker 1: back into the Raiders facility. So everything you had to
- 28:22Speaker 1: do with the Raiders facility, you need an escort or
- 28:24Speaker 1: you get like the stink guy. Um, so they're getting
- 28:27Speaker 1: like escorted. They had to go do something. And I
- 28:28Speaker 1: think they were like waiting outside a door and I
- 28:31Speaker 1: call this guy just came up to us and was like, oh,
- 28:32Speaker 1: how you guys like in Vegas. You just gotta started
- 28:35Speaker 1: chating him up a little bit and uh and then
- 28:37Speaker 1: he leaves and then it light dawns on Tamara and
- 28:40Speaker 1: Emma that it was DeVante Adams. It just like came
- 28:42Speaker 1: up and started chatting with them. She didn't even realize it.
- 28:44Speaker 1: So he's sneaky. He's sneaky. You wouldn't realize it. But uh,
- 28:48Speaker 1: yeah it was. It was impressive. But I still think
- 28:51Speaker 1: watching Hunter Renfer, I'm like, how do the Patriots not
- 28:53Speaker 1: have at least one of these kind of guys on
- 28:55Speaker 1: the roster, you know. And it's and no disrespect to
- 28:58Speaker 1: Jakobe because I think he had one of the best
- 29:00Speaker 1: best camps just a little bit one of the best camps. Sorry,
- 29:04Speaker 1: one of the best you know, two days out there.
- 29:06Speaker 1: But you know, the contrast was that when the Raiders
- 29:10Speaker 1: would make plays to Adams or Renfro, it was like,
- 29:13Speaker 1: that's not even close, Like he's open, the ball is there,
- 29:16Speaker 1: it's a catch, a tuck and a run. With the
- 29:18Speaker 1: Patriots good plays, it was what's going into traffic? Whoa
- 29:22Speaker 1: Jakobe came down? Whoa Hunter Henry came down with it?
- 29:25Speaker 1: You know, it wasn't like and again hard to tell,
- 29:28Speaker 1: like because you're looking through a sideline full of guys watching,
- 29:31Speaker 1: so you're just seeing little pieces. But that was the difference,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and that's why I didn't come out of the Yeah,
- 29:36Speaker 1: they were competitive in those final periods the last two days,
- 29:39Speaker 1: and they were able to stick a touchdown in and
- 29:41Speaker 1: I thought, you know, that play to end with Hunter Henry,
- 29:44Speaker 1: like you could just feel the kind of I don't
- 29:46Speaker 1: want to say relief, but just like we did it,
- 29:49Speaker 1: you know, like we kind of we had a good,
- 29:50Speaker 1: good end to to the practice again, the celebration, um,
- 29:54Speaker 1: you know, it just it felt like a nice way
- 29:55Speaker 1: to kind of end things. But it wasn't It wasn't easy,
- 29:59Speaker 1: you know, it was it was. It was close. I mean,
- 30:01Speaker 1: especially even on that Hunter Henry one, that one of
- 30:03Speaker 1: the dbs jumped a little too early. I mean he
- 30:05Speaker 1: might he might have picked it if he had time,
- 30:06Speaker 1: did a little bit better, So a little bit of caution.
- 30:09Speaker 1: But but still they put the ball in the end
- 30:12Speaker 1: zone when they were you know, when they were in
- 30:14Speaker 1: that I think they can get it to have some success.
- 30:16Speaker 1: So it's good that they finished on a high note. Certainly.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I want to jump over to some emails there. What
- 30:22Speaker 1: does Fred say there? There? Emails are stacking up, stacking up.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Why don't you read something? It's not can we do
- 30:28Speaker 1: that dance? Now? I haven't earned that yet, I haven't
- 30:31Speaker 1: feeling a little bad for you. Yeah, here's good. Tired
- 30:33Speaker 1: now I feel good. I feel I feel good. No good.
- 30:36Speaker 1: I feel like I owe it to the listeners to
- 30:37Speaker 1: come in here and explain myself a good after the Tuesday,
- 30:41Speaker 1: you know, like fresh were so confident in you that
- 30:43Speaker 1: we made Alex come in from from home. It was
- 30:45Speaker 1: almost the little the Paul and Alex show. Wait for
- 30:48Speaker 1: this three pm crash are about to have that. Oh
- 30:50Speaker 1: I know I'm gonna I'm gonna. I'm gonna jet after
- 30:52Speaker 1: this and and try to try to get some sleep
- 30:53Speaker 1: in preparation for because if they don't play the starters
- 30:56Speaker 1: tomorrow and it's all back, I mean it's probably gonna
- 30:58Speaker 1: be back us by the second half. Anyway, the end
- 31:00Speaker 1: to that postgame show. I hope our kids good. I
- 31:02Speaker 1: hope he can keep me up and involved because he's
- 31:05Speaker 1: right there now. I think it's hardest working in in
- 31:08Speaker 1: show biz. But look, Adam Jones, let's jump to Michael
- 31:11Speaker 1: Egilar has an email coming in out. I don't think
- 31:13Speaker 1: McMillan is one the job next to Bentley. What are
- 31:15Speaker 1: the odds that mac Wilson takes that starting spot. He
- 31:18Speaker 1: was all over the field through preseason and looked decent
- 31:20Speaker 1: on pass coverage. Um, I think this is a good
- 31:22Speaker 1: email because it's been more kind of Gelati Tova than
- 31:25Speaker 1: mac Wilson. Which I'm not happy. Um. I think I
- 31:28Speaker 1: think it's troubling to a lot of people. I think
- 31:29Speaker 1: Tobay is like thoroughly average, like at least Mac mac wilson.
- 31:33Speaker 1: I can see the agility. I could see the mobility
- 31:36Speaker 1: of what they what they like in sub packages Um
- 31:40Speaker 1: and McMillan. I think they probably liked his experience in
- 31:43Speaker 1: his veteran set. He's out there a lot. He's out there,
- 31:45Speaker 1: you know, I don't really see what is Gelanti Tavai.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I mean, he feels like an early he feels like
- 31:51Speaker 1: what Bentley, you know, would have been just an early down.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Give me an example of my you know, and you'll
- 31:56Speaker 1: you're gonna probably be like, I don't know how he
- 31:58Speaker 1: does it early in the early in the game. In
- 32:00Speaker 1: the Panthers game, it's like a you know, jag tight
- 32:04Speaker 1: end wearing like forty six or something. For the Panthers,
- 32:07Speaker 1: it comes down the scene to buys like three yards
- 32:09Speaker 1: behind them in Bay. They get like a thirty yard
- 32:11Speaker 1: play right down the right down. The guy was like
- 32:13Speaker 1: the only successful play the Panthers ran all night. And
- 32:17Speaker 1: I just I don't know what they see and to buy.
- 32:19Speaker 1: I don't I don't know what the fascination is now.
- 32:22Speaker 1: He feels like one of the special linebackers were trying
- 32:24Speaker 1: to get away from. But it's a special teamer. They
- 32:27Speaker 1: seem to like him. It's something to watch for sure.
- 32:29Speaker 1: I mean, I think everybody is like, got the fields
- 32:32Speaker 1: for Mac, but I also don't be I also don't
- 32:34Speaker 1: love the idea of Mac Wilson playing three downs, Like
- 32:38Speaker 1: at some point you need to have some guys out
- 32:40Speaker 1: there that can stand up to the run. It was
- 32:42Speaker 1: not kind of a Pfifer was like just kind of
- 32:44Speaker 1: a third down linebacker. Ohifer was much that. Yeah, I
- 32:48Speaker 1: just remembering that, Yes, Jack and Anna because wanted to
- 32:52Speaker 1: has Yanni just overtaken Justin Horan for the third tackle
- 32:55Speaker 1: spot on the depth chart with the Pats carried both
- 32:57Speaker 1: ca Justin Horan on the fifty three men roster. Giving
- 32:59Speaker 1: the histories of the Pats starting tackles, can the Pats
- 33:03Speaker 1: afford not to carry two backups? It's a good question.
- 33:05Speaker 1: I think they need both. Yeah, and I couldn't tell you.
- 33:08Speaker 1: I couldn't tell you who's better between. I mean, I
- 33:10Speaker 1: feel like they're similarly. They can justice played better in
- 33:13Speaker 1: the summer when they've gotten a chance, but you know, yeah,
- 33:16Speaker 1: I'm not Dante. I still the most notable thing I
- 33:19Speaker 1: can remember about justin Haran this summer was trying to
- 33:21Speaker 1: run down that Kyle Dugger pick six like Matt had
- 33:23Speaker 1: like day two, and that was going like, look at
- 33:25Speaker 1: that big guy running down the field there. But that's
- 33:28Speaker 1: a good question, Jack. I think they need I think
- 33:30Speaker 1: they need both of them, and I'm not sure where
- 33:32Speaker 1: either of them are. But let's let's hop over to
- 33:36Speaker 1: the phones here for a second. And I got a Matt,
- 33:38Speaker 1: don't worry, Mat, I'm on it. I'm on it. I
- 33:39Speaker 1: got it, Matt from Ohio. What's up is it? Matt?
- 33:45Speaker 1: I did have, you know, in my final projection, for
- 33:48Speaker 1: what it's worth, I did have co justing in Iran,
- 33:50Speaker 1: both both making it. Yeah, let's jump over to Patty
- 33:53Speaker 1: from Agawa. On Patty, what's up going on? Everyone? Oh?
- 33:58Speaker 1: That's your your enthusiastic tone that down. Say I'm I
- 34:03Speaker 1: got the week off. I'm hanging out with my girls.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Say hi girls. Yeah, now I'm not going to that's okay.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Since training camp officially ended yesterday and we only got
- 34:17Speaker 1: one more, probably crappy preseason game left, I just wanted
- 34:20Speaker 1: to give my season prediction. I do think this team
- 34:23Speaker 1: can finish ten and seven. I think that's where I
- 34:26Speaker 1: sat last year. But I'm gonna hold off on saying
- 34:28Speaker 1: that they're gonna make the playoffs just because I think
- 34:32Speaker 1: if they don't end up with a winning record, you know,
- 34:34Speaker 1: at least four and two, if they can find it
- 34:36Speaker 1: a way to steal a game against Buffalo and hopefully winning,
- 34:41Speaker 1: you know, win against Miami at home, I don't think
- 34:44Speaker 1: this team's gonna end up making the playoffs this yere Yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 1: but go ahead. I'm sorry, go ahead. Follow No, I
- 34:51Speaker 1: was just gonna say it wasn't me. I just feel
- 34:53Speaker 1: like I'm I'm breaking under your breath. Did I enter
- 34:58Speaker 1: my best sound like an F bomb to me? No?
- 35:00Speaker 1: Oh No, I'm bracing for I'm just bracing for a
- 35:04Speaker 1: choppy start. Did you hear it too? I kind of yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 1: They usually they don't. They don't usually start offs all
- 35:12Speaker 1: that great. And I know that, you you know, the
- 35:15Speaker 1: first one or two weeks of the season, everybody makes
- 35:18Speaker 1: a big deal about every single team. You know, you
- 35:21Speaker 1: could have the Bucks go out and score forty five
- 35:23Speaker 1: points and everyone's gonna say it looks like they're going
- 35:25Speaker 1: back to the super Bowl. You know, the Patriots, who
- 35:27Speaker 1: historically played terrible in Miami, might lay you know, might
- 35:31Speaker 1: lay a lay an egg down there. And no one
- 35:34Speaker 1: overreacts over the Patriots performances, that's for sure. Yeah, right,
- 35:38Speaker 1: no one had them in the super Bowl when they
- 35:39Speaker 1: won seven in a row in the middle of the year.
- 35:42Speaker 1: That's true, right, I mean that mean that's the NFL
- 35:46Speaker 1: in general, is there's you're taking seventeen snapshots. It's a
- 35:51Speaker 1: it's a week to week proposition. So yeah, if Tampa
- 35:55Speaker 1: Bay goes out and looks just like they always have
- 35:57Speaker 1: despite their tumultuous training, ye here, Yeah, people are gonna
- 36:01Speaker 1: say that's a team that has the talent too, and
- 36:03Speaker 1: they look like they're primed and ready to go back.
- 36:06Speaker 1: If the Patriots go down to Miami and the offense
- 36:09Speaker 1: does not resemble what we've seen all summer and instead
- 36:12Speaker 1: it looks efficient and ineffective, yeah, people are gonna say
- 36:15Speaker 1: this team is better than we thought. That's that's what happens.
- 36:18Speaker 1: You get your overreactions based on one week. Yeah, and
- 36:21Speaker 1: you've got a perfect setup for an overreaction right out
- 36:23Speaker 1: of week one with a division opponent. It's always a
- 36:25Speaker 1: hard place to play, but they've made some great additions
- 36:27Speaker 1: this year with Tyreek. And it's also it's a lot
- 36:30Speaker 1: of like colliding um traditions, like you know, like Bill
- 36:35Speaker 1: generally performs well whenning going against the rookie coach, and
- 36:38Speaker 1: it's for you know, the first time, you know, uh,
- 36:40Speaker 1: those kinds of things, and yet you know, and then
- 36:43Speaker 1: but then you look at like the game against San
- 36:45Speaker 1: Francisco a couple of years ago with Mike McDaniels offense,
- 36:48Speaker 1: and then Patriots had no answers for it, you know,
- 36:50Speaker 1: I mean, obviously different personnel, but still pretty good personnel
- 36:53Speaker 1: in Miami too. Thanks Patty, appreciate it. Let's jump back
- 36:56Speaker 1: to Matt from Ohio. Hey, Matt, you're back. What's up? Hey?
- 37:00Speaker 1: I'll hey you guys doing Hey. I just wanted to
- 37:04Speaker 1: touch on something to a couple of things actually that
- 37:07Speaker 1: Paul and Fred were talking about on Tuesday. M Paul,
- 37:10Speaker 1: you're definitely right about the broken collar bone aspects from Taikwon.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I mean, that's gonna have no range of motion issues there.
- 37:18Speaker 1: I did. I broke my collarbone and tore my lab
- 37:21Speaker 1: room in the same shoulder, and I will I will
- 37:24Speaker 1: say that with the you know, obviously a likement, you
- 37:27Speaker 1: will have range of emotion issues. So I don't see
- 37:29Speaker 1: any issue with the collarbone for taiquon Um. But I
- 37:34Speaker 1: will say that I'm concerned with him being out and
- 37:37Speaker 1: hurting the offense. I was excited to see how he
- 37:39Speaker 1: was going to impact the offense and actually get some
- 37:43Speaker 1: separation from these dbats that we saw on camp. I mean,
- 37:47Speaker 1: unlike everybody else that we've we've thrown out there. I mean,
- 37:51Speaker 1: it's great to see that Ja Kobe is making these
- 37:55Speaker 1: great catches and whatnot, and uh bo Jordan Humphreys making
- 37:59Speaker 1: any fact shoulder catches are back sholder pads and stuff
- 38:02Speaker 1: like that. But I just don't understand why nobody can
- 38:06Speaker 1: get any separation. I mean that's just actually like pretty
- 38:09Speaker 1: alarming to me. I mean, what do you guys think, Yeah,
- 38:13Speaker 1: concern for me too, it is. And then that was
- 38:15Speaker 1: what was Thanks Chris or sorry, Matt's appreciate it. Uh
- 38:19Speaker 1: you know, that's what with Adams and rentro It's just
- 38:20Speaker 1: that's what stands out and that's really exciting. I think
- 38:23Speaker 1: about Thornton, I did see separation. I thought he was
- 38:26Speaker 1: consistently open, and I think Aglare has gotten open consistently
- 38:31Speaker 1: and so quick too. I think he's he's the only
- 38:33Speaker 1: one of that group that really kind of pushes the pace.
- 38:35Speaker 1: But but Born, you know, like I think, you know, Parker,
- 38:38Speaker 1: I think is going to provide another element and listen,
- 38:41Speaker 1: it's something they didn't have last year. It's a it's
- 38:43Speaker 1: a receiver they didn't have last year that can play.
- 38:46Speaker 1: But he's not gonna wow you with like wow, did
- 38:49Speaker 1: you see that route that he created? Three yards of separation?
- 38:52Speaker 1: And it's gonna be contested catches. It's going to be
- 38:55Speaker 1: your favorite plays, you know, and zone fades, That's what
- 38:58Speaker 1: I mean. I think it was just seeing it what
- 39:01Speaker 1: it looks like after you know, for so long, just
- 39:03Speaker 1: watching drills where you know it's everything's kind of close,
- 39:06Speaker 1: you know, and to see finally plays that that aren't close,
- 39:09Speaker 1: and even when they were close to Adams, he's able
- 39:12Speaker 1: to come down with the ball with you know, you know,
- 39:13Speaker 1: one hand to catch one day. I mean, I mean,
- 39:15Speaker 1: it's the best receiver in the league by you know,
- 39:17Speaker 1: arguably so hoting how much you just gush, I'm sorry,
- 39:20Speaker 1: I gotta stop. I'm gonna try to get it all
- 39:22Speaker 1: out by one o'clock and then I'll be no more
- 39:23Speaker 1: mention of Davante Adams. But Chris writes in and I'm
- 39:27Speaker 1: sorry for this. Chris. After Tuesday's episode and listening to Mike,
- 39:30Speaker 1: I'm honestly worried about this season. Obviously, I want to
- 39:32Speaker 1: make the playoffs, but I was more looking forward to
- 39:34Speaker 1: building off of last year and knowing that we have
- 39:36Speaker 1: players to build around. I'm just curious, curious to what
- 39:39Speaker 1: is the cause of the offensive struggles. Is it Mac
- 39:41Speaker 1: Jones struggling? Is that the receiver's not getting open? Is
- 39:43Speaker 1: a combination of it all? Just want your honest evaluation
- 39:46Speaker 1: because everything I see on Twitter, it's just negative and overwhelming. Um.
- 39:50Speaker 1: I mean, first of all, caveat is it's hard. It's
- 39:52Speaker 1: hard to break it down of like, all right, well
- 39:54Speaker 1: it's ten percent this and twenty percent. You know, it's
- 39:56Speaker 1: I think it's a little everything. I think it starts
- 39:58Speaker 1: up front. I think they've had a hard time. They
- 40:00Speaker 1: haven't been able to run block at all, and they've
- 40:02Speaker 1: had a hard time protecting. I think that's why I
- 40:04Speaker 1: would start injuries with that whole Like the offensive line,
- 40:07Speaker 1: it's yeah, a rookie and a rookie offensive lineman too.
- 40:10Speaker 1: I don't you know, I mean, I know that was
- 40:12Speaker 1: another thing. I mean, I think these are the guys
- 40:14Speaker 1: that are going to play like I think Strange has been,
- 40:18Speaker 1: you know, a little up and down as a rookie,
- 40:20Speaker 1: and he's gonna play. He's going to be a starting
- 40:22Speaker 1: left guard, so he's got to figure it out quickly.
- 40:26Speaker 1: And I do think the receivers have had a hard
- 40:27Speaker 1: time separating on a consistent basis. And I don't think
- 40:31Speaker 1: Mac has been great, no, but but I think overall,
- 40:35Speaker 1: generally when he has time, he seems to be able
- 40:38Speaker 1: to get the ball where I'm going to give you
- 40:39Speaker 1: the answer that I do. When he originally said that
- 40:42Speaker 1: it was just like two wednesdays ago. Now, I mean,
- 40:45Speaker 1: show me the quarterback that's not consistently good when he
- 40:48Speaker 1: has time. Yeah, you gotta be right. If you can't
- 40:51Speaker 1: do it when you have time, you can't do it. Yeah.
- 40:53Speaker 1: I just I just want to make it easier on him.
- 40:55Speaker 1: And I think that's what the Thornton part of it is.
- 40:57Speaker 1: And you know, as as much as or Henry and
- 41:00Speaker 1: jon I Smith can do, it's you know, they're not
- 41:03Speaker 1: dynamic threats. It's they're they're good, solid tight ends, but
- 41:07Speaker 1: not like to the point where, oh man, this these
- 41:10Speaker 1: are guys are going to kill us today. You know.
- 41:11Speaker 1: It's just it's they'll come down with some contested catches,
- 41:14Speaker 1: but I don't think that they're gonna have the kind
- 41:16Speaker 1: of you know, just go back to this like separation stuff.
- 41:18Speaker 1: It's you know, it's just it's not it's not there.
- 41:21Speaker 1: I do think they'll be able to move the ball.
- 41:22Speaker 1: I just I think for me though, the big element
- 41:25Speaker 1: is like can they just run the ball? You know,
- 41:26Speaker 1: like like what does the real run game look like?
- 41:28Speaker 1: And then that might that start I worry about the most.
- 41:30Speaker 1: The running game has been so bad in the summer,
- 41:33Speaker 1: and I I like, I shuddered to think what the
- 41:36Speaker 1: offense would look like without being able to run it,
- 41:38Speaker 1: because last year it was all running game, and if
- 41:42Speaker 1: they can't run it at all and it's all on
- 41:43Speaker 1: the passing game now, I worry about the protection and
- 41:47Speaker 1: all that. And it's not even hyperbole, like we really
- 41:49Speaker 1: haven't seen a single day. I mean I wasn't in Vegas,
- 41:52Speaker 1: but I didn't read very good things about the Running game.
- 41:55Speaker 1: It's just always look like handoff and just a clump
- 41:57Speaker 1: of guys. Yeah, you know, and and and to be honest,
- 42:00Speaker 1: the Patriots defense did a pretty good job on the
- 42:02Speaker 1: other side of the ball too with those kind of plays.
- 42:04Speaker 1: I thought yesterday the Raiders found a little bit more
- 42:07Speaker 1: room and the Patriots did find some room. Ramander Stevenson
- 42:10Speaker 1: had you know, some extended reps because Damian Harris was out.
- 42:13Speaker 1: So but I just think if you're able to get
- 42:15Speaker 1: out and I hate saying established the run, but you know,
- 42:18Speaker 1: if you're able to run the ball a little bit,
- 42:20Speaker 1: it just it. It gets the pass rushers off, it
- 42:22Speaker 1: gets you know, it's just and then it starts to
- 42:24Speaker 1: fall into place. And I really think that how they've
- 42:28Speaker 1: drafted with Harris and Stevenson, we haven't seen anything really
- 42:31Speaker 1: out of the other Harris and strong yet. Curious to
- 42:34Speaker 1: see what they do and if anything, tomorrow night. But
- 42:36Speaker 1: with the way they built it, it seems like they
- 42:38Speaker 1: have a concerted effort to have a strong run game
- 42:40Speaker 1: that you know, you can that you can rely on,
- 42:42Speaker 1: the can be an engine for the offense. And maybe
- 42:44Speaker 1: that's part of the struggles too, is just not being
- 42:47Speaker 1: able to you know, get into that kind of mode.
- 42:50Speaker 1: H did you Dan from a VA in Michigan, Virginia, Michigan?
- 42:54Speaker 1: I got you, I got you, Dan. Well, how long
- 42:56Speaker 1: I've been doing the show? Three years and he's been
- 42:58Speaker 1: right in? Yeah, struggle stupid baby, Gooday. A p U crew,
- 43:03Speaker 1: the Major's team plane was spotted flying out of the
- 43:05Speaker 1: airport here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Do you know why
- 43:07Speaker 1: aircraft one was over here in my neck of the woods.
- 43:09Speaker 1: I don't know. I didn't know if it was going
- 43:11Speaker 1: to hang out in Vegas and wait for us, but
- 43:13Speaker 1: apparently it's still making the round. So I did have
- 43:15Speaker 1: my maiden voyage on the aircraft, which was pretty cool
- 43:19Speaker 1: from what you've seen it. Joined practices. How does the
- 43:21Speaker 1: Raiders offense under McDaniels compare to pass Patriots offenses under him?
- 43:24Speaker 1: How does the McDaniels o revise for Derek Carr compared
- 43:28Speaker 1: to the new system being implemented by the Patriots. Well,
- 43:32Speaker 1: I would just say, Dan, it's hard to tell exactly
- 43:35Speaker 1: because I didn't see a lot of them using Jacob
- 43:37Speaker 1: Johnson the fullback kind of stuff. And it's like you
- 43:40Speaker 1: have Demante Adams and there enter Renfro like he can
- 43:43Speaker 1: move those two guys around. I mean that that essentially
- 43:46Speaker 1: seems like what the offense is right now is just
- 43:49Speaker 1: using those guys, putting them in a variety of different
- 43:52Speaker 1: spots to get matchups. And the other guy that stood
- 43:55Speaker 1: out for them was mac Hollins. Do you remember him
- 43:57Speaker 1: at all, Paul mac Hollins, Miami. Yeah. Yeah, he's kind
- 43:59Speaker 1: of that the third guy right now without Waller, but
- 44:02Speaker 1: he's a big receiver. He was playing a lot for them.
- 44:04Speaker 1: I was kind of one of the guys. I was
- 44:05Speaker 1: a little bit surprised they have just Adams and Renfro
- 44:09Speaker 1: and then mac Hollins is the third. I mean he
- 44:11Speaker 1: was the one that happened to like Brian Edwards and
- 44:14Speaker 1: I mean as far as like the plays, that's a
- 44:16Speaker 1: good question with Brian Edwards now zuber Zubers eighty nine now,
- 44:20Speaker 1: um yeah, I mean it's it's I mean, Dylan's stoner.
- 44:24Speaker 1: But yeah, mac Collins was one that kept popping up
- 44:26Speaker 1: as and he was another one that they brought. Then
- 44:29Speaker 1: they have a lot to the interview on Adams to
- 44:31Speaker 1: stay healthy then, because that's not a great receivering group
- 44:34Speaker 1: if they look because when Waller always battles injuries. But
- 44:38Speaker 1: and and and Josh was asked a little bit about
- 44:40Speaker 1: this too, and you know, just saying it's about the personnel.
- 44:43Speaker 1: And I mean every year you change, and you know,
- 44:46Speaker 1: I mean I made a kind of a Paul joke
- 44:48Speaker 1: on the sidelines during during the practice, I turned to
- 44:51Speaker 1: to the to the be reporters and I said, Josh
- 44:53Speaker 1: might not even need to have a wide receiver throw
- 44:55Speaker 1: it past this year. That's pretty good. That's pretty good.
- 44:58Speaker 1: That's a Paul like joke. He might actually be able
- 45:01Speaker 1: to school without the wide receiver doing it for him.
- 45:04Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I couldn't. I couldn't help myself. You guys know,
- 45:06Speaker 1: I was in I was in a dark place there. Um.
- 45:08Speaker 1: But but you know, that's that's what it is. I mean,
- 45:10Speaker 1: I think, you know, every year everything kind of change
- 45:12Speaker 1: a little bit. But he's you know, he said. The
- 45:14Speaker 1: way Josh put it was like, look, there are things
- 45:16Speaker 1: they're doing that I recognize. There are things doing that
- 45:18Speaker 1: I that I haven't seen before. Just like we're doing
- 45:21Speaker 1: things that I'm sure they recognize. And we're also doing
- 45:22Speaker 1: things I said that he talked about, we have some
- 45:25Speaker 1: new things that we're doing too, and they're gonna have
- 45:26Speaker 1: to do because you're not going to go into the
- 45:29Speaker 1: game against the Patriots certainly just rolling out the exact
- 45:32Speaker 1: offense that you always ran for the Patriots. The other
- 45:35Speaker 1: thing I said was funny was on one of the
- 45:37Speaker 1: drills he said, we called, we called, like an audible
- 45:39Speaker 1: from the sideline, and the Patriots sideline heard it and
- 45:41Speaker 1: recognize that. They all started yelling out what I heard.
- 45:44Speaker 1: I heard. There was a lot of that going on. Yeah,
- 45:46Speaker 1: the Patriots players knowing what was coming. Yeah, somehow still
- 45:50Speaker 1: couldn't stop rights. But it does go kind of both ways.
- 45:56Speaker 1: One of the questions I kind of had was like,
- 45:58Speaker 1: did the Patriots just gett out class or do you
- 46:01Speaker 1: think there's an aspect a little bit with Josh just
- 46:04Speaker 1: really knows this whole team really well. Yeah, I mean
- 46:07Speaker 1: and I think that. I mean, Josh he was super
- 46:11Speaker 1: complimentary of Mac, but I think he does he knows
- 46:13Speaker 1: the ins and outs of it. I mean, he said,
- 46:15Speaker 1: this is the offense I've been in my whole my
- 46:16Speaker 1: whole career. You know, even I didn't even realize when
- 46:18Speaker 1: he said when he was with the Rams in twenty
- 46:20Speaker 1: eleven that Spagnolo let him just kind of run his
- 46:22Speaker 1: offense there too, you know. So, I mean, I just
- 46:26Speaker 1: change was inevitable, and I think you can't really fault
- 46:29Speaker 1: the Patriots for doing this whole offensive reset. I just
- 46:31Speaker 1: think you can question the methodology and the personnel that
- 46:34Speaker 1: they're using to coach and install that. Um, I think
- 46:37Speaker 1: that that that's fair game. But I don't. I don't.
- 46:39Speaker 1: I think they had to do something like this to
- 46:41Speaker 1: you know, kind of hit the reset button around Mac.
- 46:43Speaker 1: I wish maybe they had done it last year. It's
- 46:45Speaker 1: hard to tell, you know, Josh to parse down his
- 46:48Speaker 1: extensive playbook that he built up. But um, you know,
- 46:51Speaker 1: just like like he said, though, I'm sure he built
- 46:53Speaker 1: things around Mac last year that were, you know, new
- 46:55Speaker 1: things that helped the offense as well. Let's go to
- 46:58Speaker 1: Andre from New Jersey. Andre is not feeling good about
- 47:01Speaker 1: his bet then he made with you, Paul. He said,
- 47:03Speaker 1: he made a bet with you guys, Patriots will win
- 47:04Speaker 1: ten or more games this season, and if that happens,
- 47:07Speaker 1: Paul is going to get me tickets for next season.
- 47:09Speaker 1: But I'm slowly losing confidence this season, reason being the
- 47:12Speaker 1: inconsistency of the offense. I'm going to take his word
- 47:16Speaker 1: for it. But I do not remember betting about ten games.
- 47:19Speaker 1: I don't remember that bet either. I remember betting somebody,
- 47:21Speaker 1: but not I don't remember betting ten games. Like, I
- 47:25Speaker 1: don't think ten games is completely out of the REMA possibility.
- 47:27Speaker 1: It's not about you would have made And I'm saying
- 47:29Speaker 1: that after a terrible training camp, like I'll take his
- 47:34Speaker 1: word for it and I'll honor it. But I don't
- 47:36Speaker 1: remember saying they will not win ten games. I don't
- 47:39Speaker 1: remember saying that. Andre asked also neither think he's worried.
- 47:43Speaker 1: You might roll your eyes at this, but go Bill Gill,
- 47:46Speaker 1: give a call to Mike Vrabel and see if Taylor
- 47:48Speaker 1: Luan is available for a trade. Titans did draft to
- 47:51Speaker 1: tackle high in the draft, so Bill give McCall and
- 47:54Speaker 1: moved TRMP Brown on the right back to the right
- 47:56Speaker 1: side to saw the tackle issues there. I don't know
- 47:57Speaker 1: how much Taylor Luan. I like Taylor Luan. I think
- 48:00Speaker 1: he's got I don't know. I had a rough year
- 48:03Speaker 1: last year. I'm not rolling my eyes. I'm I'm asking, like,
- 48:06Speaker 1: if if he's starting, like, why would they trade him?
- 48:11Speaker 1: That would be my question. I have to check with Titans.
- 48:13Speaker 1: Unfiltered on that one. Yes, I'll I'll look at that
- 48:15Speaker 1: all right. Paul's pizzas here everybody, So that means it's time.
- 48:18Speaker 1: We got to take a break, So we will be

- 1:00:55Speaker 1: the on the on the camp cast, and I posed
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: it kind of at the top of the show, was
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: that the question of, you know, how much can the
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: Patriots game planning, you know, save them. We've heard so
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: much about we're working on fundamentals, We're just about one
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: on ones there, you know that, what's your what's your
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: take on it? You know you were, you were out
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: there at the practice. It just like I was, I mean,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: just give us your your overall kind of takeaways from
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: from everything you saw, which of course you wrote about
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: and you can check it out on Patriots dot com too.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Nice plug. Yeah, I think that overall, defensively, I feel
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: like they're still in a good place. And when we
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: get here in Vegas in December and you see Davante
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Adams and you see Hunter Renfro, I'm sure that Bill
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Belichick and the Patriots coaching staff will have a plan
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: in place that was better than may see what we
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: saw and practice on Tuesday at times, certainly better yesterday.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: But like you said, it's it's not a game planning situation.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: It's a bunch of eleven on eleven, one on ones
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: across the field basically, and fundamentals and technique and all
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: that sort of stuff. So I do think that there
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: is something to be said for the game plan angle. Offensively,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: the biggest worry that I have now after watching all
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: of training camp and concluding here in Vegas, is well,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: what is the couple of things that they're good at, Like,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: what is their offensive identity? What can they hang their
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: hat on and say when we absolutely need to put
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: together or drive this is what we're going to be
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: and this is what we're going to do. And Mac
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Jones said it yesterday after the practice that they're still
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: searching for that answer a little bit. And I know
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Patriots seems in the past have gone deep into the
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: season and figured that out towards the end, like in
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: twenty eighteen when they discovered the twenty one personnel with
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: the fullback in the backfield and things like that. But
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: I just wonder if they're going to go away from
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: some of the under center stuff that we've seen this
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: summer and be more of a spread team, because it
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: does feel like when they get into the two minutes,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: when they spread the field and they let mac Jones
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: just direct the show, it looks a lot smoother than
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: when they had. We're trying to go under center and
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: run the book ball and play action and all that
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: kind of stuff. To me, the answer to that question
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: is throw short passes to the backs in the flat.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: That's to me the only thing they've been consistently successful
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: at times. I mean in Montgomery Stevenson, you know, you know,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: quick stuff in the flat. Even some of the stuff
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: to wide receivers it's like, you know, quick too, you know,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: two yard outs to you know, Myers and and yeah,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Thornton caught a ton of those two you know, shallow crosses.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: That that's what they've been good at. Well. We talked
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: to Evan about about Montgomery, and I mean, you know,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: I know you you kind of went off, not went
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: off on him, but you know, just kind of talking
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: about him. I mean, well, what did you see from
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Montgomery here over the last you know, week or so.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: It seems like he's continues to rise in in in
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: his role. Yeah. I think a lot of US Patriots
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: fans as well want to see reminder Stevenson, Damian Harris
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: take on a much larger role in the passing game
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: and have somebody who's really a three down bacterback out
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: of the backfields, as the Patriots have been so situational
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: with how they've used their running backs in recent years.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: But when you watch Time Montgomery, he's clearly the most
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: natural fit in the James White role. He's somebody that
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: I think, in particular, gets out of the backfield really
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: quickly and gets into the flat with a lot of speed,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: and I think that's difficult for linebackers to keep up with,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: especially if the linebacker is starting in the middle of
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: the field and he's got to track them all the
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: way into the flat. That's the foot race that Time
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Montgomery has consistently won. He beat Jayon Brown in eleven
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: on elevens yesterday to the pylon and that exact type
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: of situation. And Jayon Brown is a pretty athletic linebacker.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: I would consider him more in the coverage vein of
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: things at that linebacker position, and he was able to
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: beat him out of the backfield a couple of times
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: over the last couple of days. The other thing about
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Montgomery that I think would be an interesting wrinkle is
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: that he can line up in different spots and you
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: can flex him out wide and you can run him
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: ou out of the flat and out of the backfield,
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: which it allows them to play with formations and maybe
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: attack defenses a little bit differently with him on the
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: field because he can give some different looks. Maybe he
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: starts out wide and then motions into the backfield or
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: vice versa, and that kind of changes the equation and
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: gives the Patriots a little bit of a better look
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: of what the defense is doing. So I think that
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: those are the cool things that you can do with him.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: That makes him a little bit more versatile than some
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: of the guys that they've had in that role in
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: the past. So I don't know if he's going to
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: come in and be the most dynamic guy, you know
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: after the catch, or be some big explosive playmaker, but
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: I do think that they can do some interesting things
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: with him in terms of his versatility, and I do
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: think that he's reliable coming out of the backfield on
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: those checkdowns or places the flat. Now, you had your
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: keen eye yesterday trained on the trenches, and you know,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: one of the things we were talking about here at
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: the top of the show was trying to figure out
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: what's really going on with the offensive line. Who you know,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: is Haran could just I mean, you know, is Trent
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: Brown settled in? I mean, just you know, overall, from
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: what you kind of saw yesterday, I think you had
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: as good of a lookout it as anybody. Um. Starting
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: with the offensives. I'd love to hear your take on
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: the defensive side too. But but you know, what, did
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: you what have you kind of come away with with
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: these offensive line, especially the backup guys. I feel like
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: that's just a huge question. I have no idea who's
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: the who's the swing tackle, who's the swing interior guard.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: You know, it's it's hard to tell with what the
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: depth looks like. Yeah, the odd thing about the offensive
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: line to me is that I was tracking OH line
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: D line one on one for the Patriots offensive line
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: yesterday and I circled quite a few winners for the Patriots.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: Isaiah Wynn went up against Max Crossby a couple of
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: times and held his own for the most part against Crosby.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Trent Brown had some good matchups against Chandler Jones, who's
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: obviously no slouch either. And are they battled with those
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: guys for the Raiders. And the Raiders have some good rushers,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: so it's not like a you know, guys that are
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: not going to be impact players on Sundays. And I
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: think the interesting thing is is that the pads, when
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: you get into one on one, they look pretty good,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: like they look serviceable, they look like they can block.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: But then when you get into the team drills and
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: it's five on five or you know, five man unit
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: for the offensive line, there's breakdowns. So I don't think
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: that it's that they can't block or that they have
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: bad offensive linemen. It's just the five man unit is
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: not gelling together at the level that you would like
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: to see. I don't think this is totally uncommon, and
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: reading some things that you see about other teams in
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: training camp and things like that, when you are only
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: in Josh McDaniel said it yesterday, the Raiders are still
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: in single digits in terms of padded practices, so there's
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: not a ton of work in pads yet for these linements.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: It's the position that is probably a little bit slower
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: to gell here than maybe some of the other positions
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: where mini camp you can still pass and really go
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: through routes and concepts and things like that. It coverages
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: on the other side of the ball, but when you
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: get into the wrenches, it really is those padded practices
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: in games. That's that's really the only thing that you
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: can do to get ready and kind of come together
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: as a unit. So maybe that will help them. But
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: like I said, it's it's the five man units seeing
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: things through the same set of eyes and getting everybody
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: blocked and not necessarily that you know, there's a weak
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: link or these individual guys can't play or something like that.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: So it's a it's a really interesting dynamic. There's a backup.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: I think that what I've seen this summer from Justin
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Horan has given me some pause. I know there's those,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: you know, some rumors out there, but Isaiah Win possibly
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: being on the trade block, and I don't know if
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: I'm ready to trust Justin Hran or Yanni could just
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: with a starting role. I think both of those guys
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: are serviceable backup. It looks to me like maybe Heran
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: has a little bit of an edge over could just
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: right now and the coach's eyes. But at the same time,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Haran has been out of practice for a little bit,
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: so maybe they just want to get him some work
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: that to just had when Haran was out. I think
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: that the interior guys look at Arleys and Hambright's been
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: a guy we've talked about a little bit, and he
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: still looks pretty solid to me. He can play guard,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: he can play a little bit of tackle. If they're
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: going to be more zone heavy, he can. He's a
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: pretty athletic guy. He can get out of his dance
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: and make box on the move. Will Sherman's come on
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: a little bit lately. He's been solid in that backup guard,
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: you know, kind of interior role for the last couple
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: of days. And I am interested in the rookie case
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: in Hines. I thought his tape against Carolina was pretty
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: solid in the running game. So he's also somebody that
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: hasn't practiced a ton, but maybe he can come on
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: here in the last couple of days of camp. So
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: one thing that you talked about their Evan about the
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: line sort of being behind because of the lack of physicality,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: which makes perfect sense. But I want to flip that
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: to the other side of the ball, where I think
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: people are, you know, around here. You guys were in
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: Vegas all week. There seems to be a little bit
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: of a ground swell developing about the defense and about
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: their ability to maybe you know, get after the quarterback
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: based on what they've seen in training camp practices and
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: some of the joint practices and whatnot. Do you sort
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: of temper that enthusiasm a little bit because of the
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: same reason. That's a good point. I haven't really thought
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: about it like that. I do think that there's a
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: lot to like about what the Patriots have done up front,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: and this Raiders line has some weak links to it.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: They have some good players. To Colan Miller, their left
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: tackle is a really good left tackle, but they're still
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: trying to figure out their position at right tackle in
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: a similar place as the Patriots. Dallas Leatherwood from Alabama
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: was drafted to be the right tackle for the long
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: term here as the Vegas by the last regime, and
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: he's been kind of a draft bus so's. They're kind
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: of in a similar situation with their line, So maybe
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: there is some of that. I do think so. Judean,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: first of all, he looked great, because these last two days,
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: he looked great against Karen On and the Joy practices
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: last week. He to me, I we'll see if he
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: ends up playing at all tomorrow. I'm good with Matthew
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Judon sitting this one out and we'll see you in Miami.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Like he looks like he's ready to go for the season,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: and he was great yesterday, And there's always it seems
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: like in a two or three place dequence, he's batting
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: a pass down at the line of scrimmage and he's
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: getting pressure on the quarterback. He was everywhere yesterday. I
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: think the guy that's the X factor. You know, we
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: knows Christian Barmore. We hope at least it's going to
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: have that second year leap, and everything points to the
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: fact that he's going to do that. So I think
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: the big time X factor for the Patriots is josh
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: uj who can't afford this season to fade down the
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: stretch like he has in his first let's call it
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: two years, but really last year was the big one.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: We saw josh uj have a great summer last year.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: He looked great in training camp. He was getting after
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: the quarterback. Same thing this summer, but without Kyle van Noy,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: without Dante hide town Hour, without Jamie Collins, they need
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: josh Uja to put it together for an entire season
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: and be a big part of what they're going to do,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: especially on passing down because when he's on, and he's
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: in there with Dudon and Barmore and Dietrich Wise and
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: maybe Juan Bentley or one of the inside linebackers in
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: more of a blitz role. Their pass rush package can
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: be really, really effective. But if you take Uja out
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: of that and he's either fading down the stretch or
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: injured again, or whatever the case may be, it does
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: change things a lot because I don't think that they
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: have another incusher that really has that type of first
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: step that uj has on this roster. I think Anthreny
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Jennings is at a good summer, but I don't think
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: that he's really that type of player. So it's interesting
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: with Duche because he's kind of the one that Diaphone
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: did on. At this point, they need him this upward
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: trajectory otherwise I think that that pass rush package looks
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: a lot different. All right, Evan, Well, we'll let you
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: enjoy your rest of your day off, and he plans
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: to cross the waste land back to in and Out.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: I'll probably hit up in and Out one more time.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: There is a rumor going around that we might make
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: a trip out to the Hoover Dam this afternoon, which
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: would be very cool, So I'm looking forward to that
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: sounds fun. Well, Hey, have have fun, safe travels back
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: and enjoy the game. Thanks Mike, all right, we'll talk
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: to you. I wonder if he took like a single breath,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: you can go no. But well, the reason I am like,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: because I do think that we tend to listen. We're
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Patriots dot com, so of course that's the way we
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: look at it. But you know, we're sort of explaining
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: away the blocking problems, and I think Evans one percent right,
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: I think that you typically see that, especially now with
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: the way that there's been all these adjustments to practice
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: time and whatnot. It's hard to be as physical as
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: you're going to be right right away. But at the
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: same time, we're and I've fallen into this. I can
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: remember doing this U as far back as like twenty eleven,
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: you know, when like you sweep your own problems under
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: the rug, like you know, Drard Mayo was blitzing up
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: the middle and Andre Carter off the edge like these
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: guys I think Andy picked him to win Cold Defensive
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: Player of the Year. Um, and we're just like, they're
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: gonna be unbelievable in the pass rush. And then you know,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: the season starts and you're like, oh, so when I'm
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: in a blocking now, oh, you know, like they kind
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: of catch up and you don't get as much pressure
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: on the passer. And Evans said it, he goes people
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: with Gaga this time last year over josh Uja because
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: he was running around guys who really weren't hitting him.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: You know, can he do that on a consistent basis
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: in the regular season. Matthew Judeon was, you know, a
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: really good pass rusher from most of last season. He
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: certainly tailed off josh Uja. To me, this is unfair, okay,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: But josh to me is the guy when they're beating
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: the Jets thirty seven to three, He's gonna get back
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: to back sacks in the third quarter close it out.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: You know it's gonna you know, just you don't that.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Don't even think about it. Zach Wilson, You're not gonna
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: put together any come back today, you know, but like
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: on third and four against Buffalo down six and you
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: need to get off the field to give your offense
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: the ball back. I don't have that confidence. Yeah, he's
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: kind of a one trick pony, and I mean he
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: is I think pretty good at that one trick, which is,
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: you know, speedbrush, but he just doesn't really have the
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: size of the weight to power through guys. I think
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: once you know, certainly Trent Brown gets his hands on him,
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: guys like that, it's it's kind of over pretty quick.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: But I do agree with the general sentiment of Ooja
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: Jennings one of those guys. But don't you feel like
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: there's been sort of like this I don't know, attitude
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: that's sort of developing about the defense. Maybe they're a
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: lot better than we thought, and you know, they're gonna
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: be so much faster and they're gonna be blitzing and
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: the aggressiveness. Okay, I mean some of those elements might
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: be true, But why are we why are we like
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: explaining away the problems protecting the passer while not using
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: those same explanations as to why you might be getting
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: more pressure on the passer. Yeah, Like, if you're behind
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: because you can't block and you can't have physicality at
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: practice your offensive line, doesn't it stand the reason that
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: everybody's offensive line is behind. But yet, you know, the
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Patriots are flashing all this pass rush in the preseason,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: and people like it's gonna be a different defense, Like,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: why are we not worried about the Panther's offensive line
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: not being up to speed yet? Yeah? You know they
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: had a rookie out there who looked lost the other
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: day with the backups, a Quantu. You know, I'm sure
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: he's a top ten pick. I'm sure he's going to
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: be a good player. He looked nowhere near ready to
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: play in that preseason game. Right. Why isn't oocha like
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: toyed with him on back to back plays? Yeah? And
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: I also, I just I feel like I'm having trouble
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: trusting again after last year, having trouble trusting his last relationships,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: trusting getting a kick out. I got, I got lulled
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: into a false sense of security last year of of
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: you know, the start, and the same thing for the
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: last two years. And so I think once that trust
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: has been broken, I feel like I'm having a conversation
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: we've built up break up. Now my confidence is broken
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: in this relationship, you know. I just I I have
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: no expectation and and it's it just goes back to
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: I think the bigger point of what do we really
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: know from preseason? What does it really tell you? Can
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: you ever look back at like the greatest Patriots teams
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: and look at their preseason and be like, yep, it
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: was right there, It was right there in front of us.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: I mean, probably the best example of Z seven, right,
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: like opposite ends of the spectrum, right Like, wasn't that
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: weren't they winless in that preseason? If I remember correct,
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: I have no idea, like I don't, but again I couldn't.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: What does it mean I couldn't tell you the result
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: of a preseas seriously, And also like what is Bill
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: allowing them to work on that we're going to be
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: able to see anyways? Like he's probably just counting down
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: the minutes until the next practice where media is allowed.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: I thought about asking him that question of like a
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: just you know, a delicate way of saying, how much
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: do you enjoy having the media out of your practice
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: or having eyeballs out of your practice so that you
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: can finally just kind of do what you want to
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: do and not really have to worry about, oh, this
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: might get out or if I put this guy here,
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: everyone's gonna say it, you know, Like I'm sure he's
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: going to relish these next couple of weeks and be
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: able to really do, which I hope, Like I said
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: at the top, move into the strings. Let's look at
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: the total total totality. Totality, totality made that up. Look
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: at the totality made up? No, no, oh man, I
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: gotta take red eyes more often. This is hopefully entertaining.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: But um, you know the whole the whole summer and
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: what do we do well? And let's build off of
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: those elements. This is what our offense is going to
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: be starting out. But I think I'm just I'm prepared
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: for it to maybe be offensively a little clunky out
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: of the gate based on how it's looked. Sure, let's
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: go to Claire in the West Midlands of Court. Not
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: on the phone, mat Sorry, she's an email. Hello, Hello
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: on har Marine, welcome back to it. Like Paul, I'm
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: happy to hear you're okay. Were you happy? Do you
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: hear that? I'm very happy to hear you were alive?
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: Let all okay? Uh? Did Stidham take part in much
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: of the training camp for the Raiders? Just curious curious
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: how he looked? And Jaylen Mills at CB one, are
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: you confident if that's what it's going to be? Like, Yeah,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: I mean Stidham's the backup, but the offense, certainly the
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Raiders offense takes a significant step back when David Carr
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: comes out. You know, it's I mean, Stidham made a
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: couple of plays, but it's still I didn't hear much
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: mention of Stidham or Zappy. Yeah, in those practices, it
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: didn't seem like either one. That just goes back to
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: the to the extensive reps for the top offense. You
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: thought they got more reps in these two practices than
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: they didn't against Carolina. Absolutely, it seems like that's what
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: everybody wrote. I mean, that's why I wouldn't be surprised
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: if you don't see them at all. It's like, you know,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: this was me tracking the practice. I'm holding up my
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: paper here, but these are the one on ones. There's
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: seven on seven. Then it's like eleven eleven eleven, eleven eleven. Yeah,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: five columns of eleven on a notebook. No, I like
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: to you know, everyone's got their own methodology, Thank you
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: very much. We look at all the work you can
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: get done when you're not fighting the whole time. Well,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: this was great. I know, this was great for the
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: blogs block servations because then I had, you know, I
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: could go back to it and reference it. And then
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: I mean, I said a little bit of window into
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: your process of I texted Paul, I'm like, I feel
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: like I need your blessing before I write blog servations.
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: This is a legend a little territorial stuff. It's it's well,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: it's you know, it's a legendary. It's a legendary post.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: That's you know, those are those are the best. I
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: told him to don't what he said on the air
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: it up. We're gonna go to the tape on that
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: one on Tuesday show. We're gonna go to the tape
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: on that. We'll find out exactly what I said. I don't,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: but I'm not gonna I'm not gonna deny anything. Um
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: a little bit. I know, I know this was talked
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: about on Tuesday. Um. George writes in from Madison, New Jersey,
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: and uh, what people from New England still rank Boston
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: cream Pie and Boston Cream Donuts number one? If they
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: were called New York cream Pie and donuts? I think not.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: I myself find both to be gross. Like, what was it?
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: What was the take on Tuesday of the Boston Fred
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: didn't like them. Fred doesn't like Boston cream donuts. Someone
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: asked what Someone said that the best donut was a
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: Boston cream donut, and I said, I agree, it's one
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: of my favorite donuts. And Fred was like, oh, it's awful, awful,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: It's like capello. Yeah, and you know, here's my here's
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: half hour later. You know, here's my take, fast forward.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: It's not a Boston cream it should be called Boston
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: custard donut. That's not cream in the middle. It's like custard,
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: right yeah, Like if it was cream in the middle,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: I'd be awful. I mean, and they're fine, I like them,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: but I just I'm always like a Boston cream and
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: I'm thinking I'm gonna get delicious whip cream in the middle,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: but you're getting like the custard, right, Yeah. I never
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: thought of it that way right now. I've never thought
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: of it that way. Now. You also, when you added
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: New York to the name instead of Boston, it no
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: longer sounds like a dessert and it just sounds like
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: something dirty. All right, Well, you're gonna do a New
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: York cream plane this week, you know, I hope. So
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: I don't know, like what is I mean there's Manhattan
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: clam chowder sound dirty, which is different than regular you know,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: New England. I mean, is there any like? I mean,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I enjoy it like a New York, New York strip sake,
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: But how much more would you like it if it
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: was a Buston strip sake? Not at all? Maybe it
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: would be cleaner, you know, to use Alex's parlance, probably
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: New York it's dirty or virgin years Todd and Greenville
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: rights and I have to listen to the show. I
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: feel a bit less enthusiastic and feel that the Pats
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: will probably win around eight games even with a solid D.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: Without an offense that can keep up the other teams
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: in the conference, are chances are much lower to win.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: Just my thoughts. I kind of agree it's how Buffalo
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: is gonna sit sit Josh Allen. And then when I'm
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: kind of all for that, I think, just when you
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: know what you got, what does it really matter? Could
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: you happen to see what they did last week? Like
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: he played like the first series win, like three for
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: three for forty five yards in a touchdown. They golden air.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: You're good, you're ready, you're ready, you're primed. Yeah again,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: it doesn't mean anything like it's just it's just to
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: get some rust off. So maybe you see a rush
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: and you you know, ideally you get you get out
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: there and you see that a little bit. But I
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: just don't think the performance itself is all that meaningful.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: Is there really any other sport that is so different
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: between just kind of going out there and playing and
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: having a game plan quote unquote, like for hockey, like, yeah,
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: you have a four second Yeah, game plan? Basketball, Alex
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: you probably because I think I think game plans are
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: important in all sports, um, but I think most important
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: in football. Like I mean, I think if you talk
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: about like an NBA thing, you know, they'll you know,
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: when when you get into a series and you're legitimately
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: locking down, you're you know, you're breaking down your defense
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: to gear to say, Kevin Durant is not going to
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: beat us in this series and this is why, this
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: is what we're going to do to make sure he
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: doesn't beat us. You don't do that in the regular season.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: I mean, you have a game plan, but not like that, right,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: It's it's it's at a different level. Yeah, but talk
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: talk some hoop. I like when I was and certainly
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: in baseball when you when you break down pitch selection
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: and all that stuff, I mean, it's probably ruining the game,
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: to be honest with you. Over thought, Yeah, yeah, that's uh,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: that's but Alex will tell you about the matchups and
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: Celtics games and which what's the five that you like?
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Burn your eyeballs out if you have to watch for
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: much longer. Oh, was it the lineup with just like
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: Grant and Payton at the same time, you go, there
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: we go, there, we go, like Alex, this is the
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Alex that was drawing? Should we not? Still? It's in
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: the off seas, it's in the off season. Are you
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: how you like recovering from them? I liked the off
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: season moves. Would you think about the whole Kevin Durant thing.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: I mean, it's like the fact that he's just staying
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: there and they came out with that. Would you traded
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: you have traded what they what they were reportedly offering
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: with Brown in the first round pick and one other
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: guy I've never heard of, Smart. I think I would smart.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: The thing is, I don't think they were offering smart.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: I think Kevin Durant's contingency is that he wouldn't play
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: here without Smart. So I like Smart, and that's one
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: want it. Smart wanted to give even wanted to play
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: with him. I don't buy that. I think he's too smart.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: Pardon the smartie. He's too good of a player too,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: said something so silly. Uh. We gotta want to hear
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: from me, yell at me. But I was twitching on
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: the side. I didn't see it, just let go all
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: of a sudden like this like blood. One day and
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: Evan was talking to a fellow reporter about the Celtic
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: season and I was just listening to him talk about
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: that whole ordeal and training Smart, and I was just like,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: don't say anything, don't say anything. Just watch the football,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: Watch the were you're seeing red. Were you disagreeing with
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: his You're disagree with everything? Yeah, So you know how
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: you could do that? It happens. You know, we're pretty
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: opinionated on I didn't want to man splain basketball to
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: this kid, but that's what I need. I need more
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: of that from you. You'll get it more. I just
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: the more I covered the game and there where the
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: season goes on, the hot takes will come. Yeah. But
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: you know you overhear conversations all the time, and you're
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: not necessarily involved in the conversation, and you know, in general,
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: you're mature enough to just sort of like less. It's
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: about jaws. If my jaws I'm jumping, let it go, right.
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Maybe I don't know them all that well, Maybe I'm
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: just not in the mood to argue. Maybe it's not
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: my conversation to bud into, right, so you just let
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: it go the way Alex did at camp that day,
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: Brian Morey could never possibly walk by one of them.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: Here's why you're wrong. Let me let me tell you
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: why you're wrong, and I'm going to deliver it in
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: a way that's going to be really greating on you.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: Let me let me see if I can say this
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: how it'll drive you the most nuts? Uh? Righting from
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: Mitch from the UK here. My question is, it seems
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: Belichick has a growing reputation for poor drafting. But when
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: do you think that narrative will change when over the
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: past few years we have drafted players like mac Harris, Dugger,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: more Barmore, et cetera who looked to be potentially great players. Um,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: I mean I don't have an issue with some of those, uh,
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: And that just goes back to something I've said, we'll
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: see if you can do that. I feel like there's
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: some real potential these last couple of draft class, and
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: I think it's absolutely critical if this franchise is going
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: to turn around, that those guys that you named in
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: um you know and I don't. So just a registation
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: is more drafting receivers, not necessarily like players. But I
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: mean I'll just go draft like. Okay, So Harris is
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: in the last year of his deal. If he doesn't resign,
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: how do you feel about that pick? Mac Jones, if
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: he doesn't get a second contract as the starting quarterback
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: because he's just sort of average, then how do you
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: feel about Like you can't tell me that we can't
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: evaluate drafts until three years down the road. If those
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: guys haven't you know, Ronnie Perkins two years, two years,
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: he's not going to have played. You can't tell me
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: I can't evaluate that pick. But I can evaluate Christian
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: Barnmore because he's because he played really good as a rookie. Yeah,
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: you know what, I like, I need to let's see
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: how these these draft picks panic. And that was the
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: point I was about to make about dugger like it
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: sounds good, but they got a lot of safeties, and
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: if he does doesn't play well, I don't know how
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: much he's gonna play it. At some point, they're gonna
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: just start putting peppers. I think Kyle Dugger has been solid.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: He's a second round pick. Not for it. I think
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: people sort of forget that just because he was their
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: first pick of that draft. He was still a second
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: round pick. I think he's been okay. He's no standout
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: star or no, and he's gotten picked onto. I mean,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: he's had some some tough moments here. I think he
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: struggles in coverage. He's more physical. I mean he he
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: like bashes guys up around the line of scrimmage. Yeah. No,
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: he can deliver. He can deliver the lumber that lay
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: the lumber, lay the lumber. You deliver it, you lay it,
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: deliver it, then you lay it there, Uh, deliver it.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: But I will say in regards to that safety group,
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: I'm developing a crush on Jibril peppers. Yeah. I don't
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: really know why. I don't know why either. I'm just drawn.
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: I'm still like, yeah, the heart wants what the heart
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: wants him. No, Like I definitely anything, definitely not. Did
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: I read that my misremembering something? You're not practice you
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: remember it totally, right, I haven't. I haven't. But it's
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: just there's something about him that my eyes drawn to
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: him in the middle of the defense. That's part of
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: it too, And he's one of the only ones that
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: the single digit doesn't really bumm me out all that much. Um.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: But I don't know what it is, and I fully
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: admit I have no evidence really to back it up
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: of like huge plays or anything. But there's just something
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: about his presence, the way he is in the middle
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: of the defense. It just it seems different. It seems
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: like it could be potentially a new twist. He's a
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: guy that coming off a major injury on his leg.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: You haven't really been able to get him involved until
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: the last week or so. I saw no. Right, You've
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: been talking about him for over a week, and I
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: just you're right, No, you're right to question it. What
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: do you I know it's you know what, I don't know.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: Maybe I'm weird like this, like you just there are
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: certain players and any sport I feel like that. You're
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: just like it's one of my guys. I like the
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: way he looks it kind of just there's something about him.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: I don't know, man, I do think you're going to
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: see a lot of those guys because I think that
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: I think Bill looks at of this. I'm going to
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: try to get my eleven best players out there as
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: often as I can, as opposed to Ray, Kuan McMillan
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: or Annie to Bay, whom you know, probably aren't among
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: the eleven best if you count Phillips and Peppers and
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: Dugger and and all that. You know, I don't know
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: how it's all going to play out. But Kyle from
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Walla Walla, Washington writes in we know where home of
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: Paul's favorite two blood. So that's right. We all know
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: this our first year without a proper fullback this season.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Have we seen any formations or plays in the preseason
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: practices where John H. Smith or anyone else is lined
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: up in the blackfield backfield blocking or running the ball
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: too big a risk or just different direction? Um, you
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: really are coming off the red eye. You're struggling with
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: the spoken words words a hard pause, I would answer,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: I haven't seen fullback. I've seen JOHNO. Smith in the backfield,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: but not as a full back. Yeah, they've been they've
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: been messing around a little bit with some of that stuff.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: But again, that feels like things that are gonna go
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: in in the next two weeks, so you know, behind
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: the behind the scenes. Uh, but we got a half
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: hour left here, so give us a buzz. You're gonna
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: be gonna make it. I don't know, we're gonna find out.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: We might need a phone call Alix and I could
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: just do the Celtics half hour finish it, I Marcus
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Smart and Yellow. I mean, it seems like there's there's
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: energy there. If you just bring it out your prodder
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: a little bit, I think you could get it. You
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: could get over there. Yeah, you don't have to wait
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: too long though, I mean maybe I don't know. It's
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: like sometimes me and Paul are in the same team
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: and sometimes we like to banter. Yeah, well banter. That's
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: basically the essence Banter podcast does make. What am I saying?
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: That's the essence of me right there in a nutshell.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Sometimes same team and then all of a sudden, you
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: need one of those people with an ivy drip and
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: they come to you after a big night out and
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: they just stick the needle right in you. You chill
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: and an hour you're good as new. There's one more
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: thing I should mention too, is that I was having
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: Starbucks coffee, which is just like next level, like it
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: was right next to the always the hotel Ota really
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: chemically lately it does, and so I also think it's
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: not this morning dollars for my coffee today five dollars
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: for grande a drip grande reason and then be charging
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: that either question is are you are you Starbucks person? No,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: they're like do you want the do you want the
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: original uh sugar? Like there was so kind of uh syrup,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: like do you want the original syrup in it? I'm like,
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: what's the original syrup? Like a coffee with like cream
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: and sugar, Like, what's the syrup? I don't know what
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: that is that's changed from the last time I was it.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: Maybe that's the Vegas thing where they put the syrup
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: in there. I don't know. It's just sugar and syrup form.
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: That's usually what syrup is, maple syrup. Uh. But I
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: got Matt, I I I got toned there. Absolutely. I
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: don't blame you for being the baby. By the whole flight,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: the baby just would not shut But that's like you
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: get addicted to that stuff. And even when we were
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: walking into practice, it was like me and Lauren Spencer,
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: who is another I think Starbucks person smith, and we
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: were riding, Yeah, we were riding. We were riding the
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Starbucks train, and Evan's like, who also, Evan has like
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: every day like a giant caramel things. Not surprised by
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: that at all, but were we were walking so fast?
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: Me and Laura were walking so fast. He's like, could
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: you guys wait up? What are you walking so fast?
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: And I'm just like And then I realized, like over
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: the course of the two practices, like I did nothing
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: but just like pace the sideline like I was a coach.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: Like everyone else was like taking breaks, sitting under the thing,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: you know. Not me. I just had like energy to
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: burn them with the Starbucks. So I feel like I
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: needed to Starbucks up if I wanted to get back
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: to where I needed to be. So I'm gonna try
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: to roll off of it. So off of this show,
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: You're gonna go home and you're just gonna sleep until
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: like five forty five tomorrow night. Probably, I'm gonna try
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: to that sounds amazing, Gonna try to No, but my
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: kids aren't gonna let me. I got the two boys
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: at home right now, fending for themselves. So I have
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: some things in the airbnb. Yeah, I know, I'll be
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: back here. Don't bother me. Beth Birthday over the weekend,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: so having people over. She's going out Saturday so with
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: her girlfriends. No, she's coming to the Chesney Saturday night.
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: Not with you, though. You're not going to now because
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: you're gonna have a late night Friday. I'll be I'll
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: be going God's work and then eating wings and drinking afterwards.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: You'll be celebrating best some things that I do best.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna be celebrating you the way I do best.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Uh perfect, Chris writes in um Sunday, we're having people wher.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: You'll be recovered from lobsters. Some lobsters on the deck.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: That's what she likes. Yeah, that's how do you do?
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: You crack them for? So you dive right in with
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: the crackers. I'm gonna draw the butter for personally killed. Like,
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: do you personally drop the lobsters into their death? Oh no, no, no, no,
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: we'll buy them. We'll buy them pre cooked. Yeah, that's
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: my mom's saying. It's her favorite food. She loves to
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: kill them. That's her personal like the way she makes lobster,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: which I don't think it's that intricate, but no, but
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: if it's her birthday, someone else has to do that
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: for somehow. Convince yourself as a horrific squeal going on. Yeah,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: my grandmother used to do it on Christmas Eve, um,
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: and we would get the live ones and she would
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: always chase us around the kitchen. That's what grandmothers do, right,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: That's what the lobster. I don't know. I just I'll
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: ate a lobster roll all day. If you want to
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: cut it up and give me the me fine, but
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: I'm not digging into clothes and shells and all that.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: I've never I don't suck it. I don't really like lobster.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: And I don't know if it was because of like
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: just the look of it, or it's too much work
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: or whatever, but I have come to the realization it's
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: really one of the few things that I quote unquote
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: don't like that I've really never tried, like I've never
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: really had, Like I you're like a ten year old boy. Yeah,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: I just decided I didn't like it. I've tried. I'm
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: not saying I like I've never had it at all,
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: because I have. But anyway, the other night we were
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: out in Beth got a lobster roll and I was like,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: she just looks so good. Why do I not like that?
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: And I was like, do you mind if I just
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: try something like? Yeah? No, it was okay, but it's
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: kind of like it's kind of like nothingness to me. Yeah. Um,
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: And she said it was a really good one too,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: So it's not like it was a bad lobster. Is
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: it buttered or mayo or there's some mayo? Not a
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: ton um. She said it was good blend, like everything
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: good chunks, yeah, chunks of good claws. Yeah. Where were
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: you guys? Um Pickering Wolf and Salem so wonderful. Think
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: it's a place called underwater or something like that, sea level,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: sea level out underwater. I don't even know every restaurants underwater.
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: But it was nice. It was nice out on the
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: deck that time of year. I mean, this is the
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: best time of year in New England. Had a couple
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: of diet miller get finished with the meal, getting up
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: to leave. Some really nice guy comes over. It's like
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: I wanted to let you finish, but I really enjoy you.
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: And Beth is just like and then there's like she's
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: he's and he's with what I assume was either his
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: wife or his girlfriend mistress who knows um, and she
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: just has her head like on her It's like, I
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: told him not and she's looking she goes, I'm sorry.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: She's mouthing like across the I'm sorry. I told him
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: not to go. But you're not famous enough for that
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: to be an inconvenience. That's what I like to say.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: It's a D list celebrity like you. You have so
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: you go out and you have enough people that come
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: up to you and say hi, but it's never to
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: the point of, oh my god, this sucks because I
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: don't make enough money for that, Like you need to.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: Like the balance of being so famous that you can't
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: really go out and enjoy a meal is Yeah, I'm
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: a multi millionaire. I'll take that. But you know, in
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: my situation, if it was annoying, yeah, that would really
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: be annoying because I don't have anyone training camp just
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: killed any that the in stadium practice, Mac was doing
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: autographs and I was just getting some social media video
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: and some guy like flags me down out of the
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: stand and I see his son is bawling his eyes out,
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: and I'm like, okay, that's a little strange, as he's
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: so happy that he just got Max. No Max skipped
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: over him, so like the spoiled brass screaming in tears
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: and the father. The father wants me to go into
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: the tunnel and bring Mac out for his one specific son.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: Did what hell kind of clearance? Do you think? Yeah, well,
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: I kind of know what you're talking about, Paul, because
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: you know, one time I was walking and someone was
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: like sub zo. Yeah, I know, but all right, I'm
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: not Yeah, so id nice nice dinner last week. That's fun,
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: fun stuff, fun stuff. Yeah, Brent Brent from Indiana, right,
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: and then he's looking for some predictions. I just I
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: struggle with the predictions right now. It's so hard. He
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: wants an overall record and I'm gonna say, I'm gonna
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: say nine and eight. Yeah, it sounds about right. Biggest
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: impact I will say that. I think I'm being optimistic.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: I feel similarly the biggest impact player. I think biggest
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: impact player I might go to Jude On. I think
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: I mean the way he's looked. I'm gonna say, Romandre Stephenson,
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: that's a that's a bullpick, and I like it. Leading
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: past Catcher seems like it. Yeah, yeah, that's sorry, Brent.
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: Not maybe not what you're looking for, but I mean,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: hopefully we're talking about we ain't talking people off the tide.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: We answered the question. I want to like a firm like, well,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: clearly they're gonna go nine and six or whatever. What
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: what do they going now? What are the math? Nine
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: and eight? Seven? I hate does not adversity well at all.
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: It's funny though, because pasta many late nights with me,
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: so I mean I usually, but this feels like I'm
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: beyond there's a difference between our our late nights in this.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: I I sympathize because I've been there. I used to
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: do the overnights and they if you don't sleep, you're delirious,
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: you know. I mean, I did not sleep. So now
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: think about coming home when you did. You got home
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: at five o'clock. Yet think about going right from there,
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: right from the airport here to do two hours worth
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: of work to edit the newspaper. That was what an
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: overnight would have been bad. It would have been bad work.
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: It would not be able to focus right now. But
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: it's uh, I like, I like the concept of the
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: red Eye just says they're not gonna like coming back never,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: But it was. It's just I never fully fall asleep.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: I don't know how people fall asleep completely. I never
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: I've never gotten any significant rest. As soon as I
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: get even close to fallen asleep, I get like the
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: body shake or you know, the plane just has a
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: little like you know, like a little shut or and
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: you're like, whoa what you know. I'm not not that
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: I hate to fly, but I just you're cramped and
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: you can't really stretch out, and there's no You had
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: to sit next to Matt on the way down. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: but we were in like the nice season. Was he
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: white knuck on it? No, he wasn't too bad. I've
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: heard that before, so I was kind of I was
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: looking at it. At one point he got up and
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: he was usually do one of these, and like the
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: look on his face like, well, you know, when you
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: get a little turbulent, he looks at you as if
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: we're going down. He's like, get me an ambient. This
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: is it, isn't it? Yeah? I'm sure, I'm sure he did.
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: I mean the food, uh, the food and just being
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: on a plane that like, this was the thing about
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: going on the Patriots plane was like, you just it's
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: weird being on a plane where you know everybody on
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: the plane. I've never had that experience that's true, where
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: it's just all these familiar faces everywhere you know you
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: kind of look, and then there's like a bus trip
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: with your hockey teams. Yeah, like then there's some random
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: players coming up, you know, to like grab food or
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: use the bathroom or whatever. So it's I don't know,
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: it just doesn't feel like that usual nature of a
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: plane flight where's just a bunch of random people and
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: an annoying baby crying or you know, all that kind
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: of stuff. Like you know, but it's just you know,
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: what else I was thinking is is does everyone else
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: have this? The worst moment is when you get in
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: the plane, you're getting settled, and they come on and
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: it's like, bing, please everything, this is a full flight tonight,
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: Like that announcement when they're like full flight, make sure
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: everything stowed, and you're like, I thought I was getting
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: an empty seat in the middle, and then you're like
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: just waiting and each time someone comes down your eye like, well,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: not this guy, not this guy. Please. You know you're
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: just hoping for like a small a smallish person. I
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: never I never luck out. I got so lucky during
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: COVID where just like entire rows to myself every single
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: time I like four or five flights in a row.
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: I got that to California a couple of times, which
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: was like full on, stretch out, lie down, and then
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: I think I did sleep a couple of times. When
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: you're able to stretch out and lie down, I mean
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: you still get like kind of jolted away. I can sleep,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: but not like it's not rest. It's like my eyes
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: are closed and I'm sort of drifted off for a
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: half hour. But you're like, I didn't get any rest
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: out of it. Yeah, that's how I fell last night. Well,
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: thank God's he's calling in to save me from myself
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: here in those final minutes, Hey spee, what's going on?
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: I'm enjoying delirious. The whole reason I came in. I
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: knew it would be comical. You're falling all over yourself.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: It's good though, Um I wanted to fall up on
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: a point that I'd made on Tuesday, like about now
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: Bill's demeanors teeming kind of annoying because the team isn't good,
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: And Paul completely understood what I was saying, Like I'm saying,
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: it's a mean thing, not a build thing. Um, you know,
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: because because Bill hasn't changed, it's like like I've changed.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: And I think there's a lot of like there's like
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: a bit of lack of self awareness, like on Andy's show,
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: like uh, Chris Scheiman Fitzy, we're like clutching their pearls
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: like that Bill is being an authoritarian the Kendrick Bourne
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: or like a douchebag to Phil Perry. But he's the
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: same guy has always been. Um. I just think that
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: there's going to be a lot more of that lack
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: of self awareness, like people just not knowing they're upset
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: because the team isn't good. When we're gonna be when
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: we're below five hundred this year, people are gonna just
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: not get that. They're just they just missed the good
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: old days, the glory being perennial as contenders. Yeah, winning
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: solves everything, right, I mean that's in or it's just
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: it doesn't ring as as true or necessary. I think
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: that's what we've talked about Paul sometimes thanks to appreciate it.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: It's just like some of the links that are gone
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: to to protect things that might not really matter, like
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: you know, like expending of energy to do things that
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: you're like, this isn't really necessary like anymore. And yeah,
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: and speed was you know, it was funny about him
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: on Tuesday when he called. But it's just like, you know,
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: he has like three questions related to the play calling
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: after the game the other night. It's you know, well,
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: well so Matt was going to place, Well, yeah, he
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: was really ending the place or the quarterback, Like he's
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: clearly being obstinate and and sort of you know, evasive.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: And you know, then someone's like, I know you don't
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: want to talk about the play calling. I never said that. No,
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: you didn't build, but your actions have spoken that quite
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: loudly over the past month and a half, you know,
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: and no one's blaming you for it. But let's not
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: try to make it out to me that you haven't
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: been unwilling to go there. It's a process like what
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: plays are we calling? You remember back in minigame, what
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: plays are we calling? It's a mini camp. I mean, like,
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: don't tell me that you've been more than willing to
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: talk about it. That was what he was trying, you know,
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: and really bugged me that day. Um, you know, and
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: remember we were talking about this in the postgame show.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: You know, people are on Twitter and they're like, oh,
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: who is this letting? Like there's snapshots of Bill like
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: with a smile in his space, he's laughing. He's like,
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: I never said that. I mean, I mean, don't where
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: he's mocking you and you think that he's laughing and
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: having fun like we're all we're all joking around together.
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: Who is this light hearted coach? No, he's mocking you.
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: He's he's he's openly mocking you by saying that he
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: he never said that. He doesn't want to talk about it. No,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: he just keeps answering it's a process and he won't
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: tell you what any of it entails. Yeah, like what
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: are we doing? Yeah, like that's worth time in your mind? Like,
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: I just don't get it. I don't get it. Yeah.
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: There were some you know, some people on Twitter after
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: my call on Tuesday, you know, acting like my faith
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: had been shaken, and I mean, I think sometimes people
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: misinterpret my you know, enjoyment of watching Bill coach for
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: like blind devotion that it's all going to work out,
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: like you know, I just I do think he's one
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: of the greatest coaches of all time. I think he's
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: also facing a kind of an unprecedented challenge to rebuild
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: a team at his age, you know, with with you know,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: certainly has missed on some some draft picks. And I remember,
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: you know, I mentioned before my grandfather was a long
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: time track coach at Toughs from basically like nineteen thirty
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: one to nineteen seventy one when he died. But remember
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: my dad talking about you know, and he was an
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: amazing track coach, one undefeated seasons, all kinds of stuff.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: But you know, as he got older, it's it's harder
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: to stay up with the players and the game, and
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: it's a challenge. And you know, regardless if you think,
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: you know, Bill belichis the greatest coach of all time,
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: it's a challenge that he's going to have to go through.
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: And I that's what I find most interesting is, you know,
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: how does he change? And in some ways he's had
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: to change, but in other ways he hasn't changed. And
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: you know, will that be the thing that ultimately kind
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: of never allows his team to come together in a
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: way now to be better than the some of their parts.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: Do you know what I mean? Would you wonder as
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: time goes by, if he continues to sort of be average,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: you know, once you lose all those guys that had
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: connections to the greatness. So are you now able to
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: convince the Judons of the world and the god childs
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: of the world or to buy in? Yeah? Yeah, Like
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: I'm so he came here because he's the greatest coach
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: and we win. But I mean, there's a lot of
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: teams that are winning, you know, at our level, and
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: some are winning at a higher level. I wonder if
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: they're having to do X, Y and Z, which is tough.
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: And Bill says that all the time. It's this is
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: not an easy program to play. He's not an easy
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: coach to play for. He says that all the time.
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: So you just wonder if there's no buy in, because
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: suddenly the players that are here are looking at us like, well,
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: I can get treated like dirt and and win somewhere else.
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: I'm not really winning at a high level here. I'm
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: just sort of average. And then you wonder, you know,
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: if that's maybe when it's time to make a change,
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: because I don't think that anything has passed them by
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: in terms of game planning, in terms of understanding what
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: it takes to be successful. I think there are probably
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: schemes in systems and whatnot that are sort of changed
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: that maybe he's been a little slow too, But he
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: understands how to get his team prepared to play football
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: and they will be well coached. Yeah, and that's and
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: that's the thing, Paul, It's like he I don't think
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: anyone would question that he knows everything there is to
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: know about football and that he can probably tell you
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: going into every game what you need to do to win.
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: But what makes a coach great though, and this was
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: like in my limited one year of club hockey coaching experience,
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: was getting a bunch of guys to play the way
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: you want them to and you can tell them we
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: got to do this, we got to do that. We've
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: got to be able to make sure this happens. But
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that they're going to be able to
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: go out there and execute all together as a team,
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: especially in like the most critical moments, which you know,
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: those are the things I think that define a great coach,
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: not the book, encyclopedia, encyclopedic knowledge of the game. It's
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: about It's about getting a team to play to another
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: level and having guys come together, and you you know,
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: that's what it's about. And I'm not there yet, Like
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: just to be clear, I'm just talking. I'm talking like
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: two years down the road. And you know, if they
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: if they aren't able to sort of get back to
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: a championship level, you wonder if it becomes harder to
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: do so. I mean, I was talking to Fred Off
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: the area yesterday and I wonder, and I have my
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: doubts if a guy came in today, if Bill Belichick
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: came in today. This was this was day one of
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: Bill Belichick's regime in Foxborough. But he hadn't. He was
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: the guy who took over, who left Cleveland. All he
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: did was Cleveland. Forget the last twenty plus years. He
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: just five years in Cleveland, eight games under five hundred,
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: one trip to the playoffs, and he's taken over a
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: franchise tomorrow. I'm not sure he'd be successful with his style.
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: His style continues to work because he has buy in
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: that comes with his immense accomplishments. Yeah, he has six
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: super Bowls on your resume, and people are saying it
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: seems kind of seems like a lot, you know, but
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: the guy wins, guy wins. I mean, everybody that plays
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: for him gets better. I'm gonna you know, I'm gonna
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: buy in. And I think there's a buy in there
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: that's sort of automatic that I don't think he would
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: have if it was a situation that maybe he didn't
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: have that same resume. Yeah, And that's why this season
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: is so interesting to me, because I asked myself, like,
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: what's a reasonable expectation after Tom Brady left for Bill Belichick?
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: And I mean I think some people might have said, well,
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: he should just be right back in the playoffs and right,
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: you know, there should be no you know, I mean,
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: of course there'll be some drop off, but you know,
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: what's an acceptable thing for a team that loses a
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: quarterback of that caliber, you know, coming off a Super
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: Bowl to obviously twenty eighteen. I just think now you're
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: kind of getting into the real meat of it, because
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: you all right, the Cam Newton COVID season was what
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: it was I think last year, regardless of how it ended,
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: you can take a positive out of it and say
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: they got a rookie quarterback in the first round and
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: they got back to the playoffs. I know it was
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: terrible down the stretch and it didn't look anything like it,
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: but you know, still it's two years. You can understand.
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: I can at least say, all right, it's not like
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: he went seven wins six you know, it's all right,
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: they had a little bit of a bounce back season.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: But now it's like you've got a second year quarterback.
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: You think you've found your guy. You've had a couple
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: of drafts that have been decent, at least on the
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: surface for what we think, or you can make an
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: argument that they're promising. So it's like, now you've had
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: these free agents that you went out and got last year.
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: It's now their second season. We've heard so much about, Oh,
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: it's you know, second year in the system. You know
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: what you're doing. So it's you know, I don't want
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: to say the excuses are running out, because I don't
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: really think they're excuses. But I just think this is
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: a season where the Rubbers either are going to meet
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: the road and you're gonna start to see a team
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: that rallies around this system and this coaching staff and
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: each other and plays better than you know, what we're
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: kind of expecting, or it's going to be kind of
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: like what we saw last year. Maybe they struggle out
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: of the gate even more than they did last year,
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: and maybe it doesn't get better, you know. So, I
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: just I think this season is a fascinating one, just
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: in terms of the whole Bill Belichick thing of at all.
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: As Anthony from Delaware writes in yeah, oh, he's here
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: to beat a dead horse. Uh, um, that you dropped
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: an F bomb on the that's false. Um. I read
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: or heard something from Brier stating one of the reasons
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: Bob wasn't a true options because they feared he'd get
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: an HC gig after a year. It makes sense. He
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: also said one of the reasons Nick Kylee wasn't truly
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: considered was because he didn't sign an extension. That's not
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: my red I don't think we really kind of talked
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: about that. I thought that was interesting. Um. I always
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: felt like this was going to be the case that
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: Patricia of Judge was going to be the option for
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: a few years. It just baffles me that one of
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: football's smartest minds would ever do something like this. Again,
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: in the back of my mind, I always feel like
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: this was going to happen, because no way one of
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: the smartest football minds would want three different ocs or
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: play callers than three years. I just love the coaching point,
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: and not even just to the OC, but we talked
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: about the O line. Four years, four different kind of coaching.
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: You know, it was set ups. So you know, there's
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: a really, really, really good chance that you're going to
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: have three offensive coordinators in three years. And it's a
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: really good chance of that. Is there a chance that
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: Matt Patricia calls the place, does a good job, and
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: his named offensive coordinator next year and everybody feels fine
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: like that, I think that's very remote. Yeah, I think
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: that's extremely remote. I think I think that might be
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: Joe Judge next year, and you'll have your third in
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: three years. Now. I would just say, like, I'm not
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: disputing any of the reports about any of this. Does
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: that make anybody feel good? Like, do you think it's
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: a good idea to not hire the guy you think
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: is best suited for a job because you think he
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: might leave? So I'm going to take someone who I
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: think is less than that guy because I think he'll stay.
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Does anybody like that idea? Just like a placeholder year?
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: Like let's just say, for argument's sake, Bill O'Brien was
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: available and they could have gotten him, but they said no,
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: because he's probably gonna leave after a year. Do you
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: think Bill O'Brien's better than what you have? Then you
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: take him for a year and you deal with it
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: the next year you have. Now you have a whole
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: year to prepare for it, as opposed to this year,
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: which seems like just kind of caught him with their
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: pants down. Yeah, they had no idea what to do. Yeah,
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: and have it and have in mind when you bring
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: him in of if he does leave, we need to
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: install a kind of system that will be translatable to
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: another And I wonder, you know, like with Nick Kayley,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: I think more likely is he reportedly was not allowed
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: to go to Vegas with Josh wanted him, He wanted
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: to go, and they blocked him. Might that be why
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: he didn't sign an extension or did he not sign
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: an extension and that's why they blocked him like chicken
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: of the egg? Right? Well, I mean one of those
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: things is probably probably accurate, right, Yeah, But either way
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: it doesn't atally seem like he's ready to stay here
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: and be the next Patriots. Again, if you thought he's
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: the best option, he's here, why wouldn't you have him
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: be your your offensive coordinator? If you thought he was
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: the best, why did you block him just to coach
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: the tight ends. I'm saying that's makes sense. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: that's And that goes back to the point from a
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: few minutes ago. I just like some of the stuff
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: doesn't doesn't add up. It just feels like, uh, you know,
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: my job, wouldn't think activity, don't mistake activity for achievement,
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: Like I don't know. Sometimes it's just like you're making
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: more work for yourself trying to cover up and be
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: one step ahead than just kind of doing what's best.
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: And I mean usually I give them credit for get
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: so many questions about the elaborate plans that Bill Belichick
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: is trying to put in place so that like his
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: coach will come in and you know, the Fred thing,
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: it's on his choice. But I just I still continue
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: to believe. Say whatever you want about Bill, but I
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: think part of what I what I like about his
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: coaching philosophy is just the the short term focus to
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: focus on the immediate, to focus on today. And I
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: think that that's something he's been consistent with. And you know,
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: I think that that's a really good philosophy, not just
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: for sports but for life, you know, focusing on today
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: and what's in front of you and you know, be
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: here now and that whole thing. But some of this
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: other stuff, it just gets so so caught up in
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: the weeds of he said, she said, who wants to
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: be where it's it's it's tough to do. Let's get
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: another question here from Dave in Bethlehem. Thank you Dave
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: for writing in. I think it's a good question. Please
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: name a player and a skill you'd like to have
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: him develop. How about Damien Harris catching better, j setting
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: a hard edge. There's a couple of good examples. H
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: Kyle Dugger and coverage. I think I'll be Kyle. Kyle
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: Dugger better in coverage would be really good. You know,
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: um what else? Uh else would be good? Mac Jones?
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: What's the scale? Mac Jones? Being able to throw the ball?
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: You you stop it? Better, better, be better? And stuff.
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: I mean, that's all you can ask for. That's my
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: That's like my Mac Bingo card on unpressed conferences all
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: you can ask for and stuff and stuff. Yeah, he's
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: definitely cut back on the end stuffs this year. Last
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: year that was you could get drunk off of that.
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: Last year, that's something year it's the nervous giggles. Yeah,
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: that's something I've noticed over the years now as I'm
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: starting to stack some years of experience of the transformation
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: and rookies talking to the media, and you know, I
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: remember thinking about it when Gronk came in, and I'm like, man,
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: that's gonna be so depressing when Gronk is like this
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: jaded ole. But he never he never became that guy.
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: But you can see like how Max's gonna go from
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: just this nature of the position, the nature of the availability,
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: the amount of times you have to speak to not
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: only us but the radio and everything that you know,
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: you slee the walls starting to come up. But they're
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: just not the open, wide eyed kid anymore that came
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: out of college. It's kind of becoming like a professional
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: football player who doesn't really want to say much. Gronk
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: now never went to the dark scus just always he was.
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: He was a goof from the first day to the
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: last day. He got a little cranky at the end. Yeah,
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: but he was always goofy, always always wanting to joke around.
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: Just a gold mine too of personality. I mean, I
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: think you knew. I was excited from the moment after
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: coming off that two thousand and nine loss to the
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: Ravens and then when they drafted Gronk and he came
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: on stage, put the helmet on, family jumping up and down.
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: I was like, all right, this guy's excited to be
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: a Patriot's making me renewed excitement out and was so
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: jacked up. Andy was in love with Gronk that in
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: that pre draft process. Oh really, so he loved Oh wow,
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: that's interesting. So he was Remember the kid, the kid
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: from Oklahoma. I really liked um Jermaine Gresham. And he
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: was good too. I mean he was since he was
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: he was nothing. Yeah, he was nothing like Gronk. Um
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: and he had he ended up hurting his knee. But um,
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: I really liked Gresham him. I liked Gronk too, but Andy, my,
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: I gotta give Andy credit. He was all over Gronk.
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: That's a good one. Usually, remember the ones that you
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: love that were terrible, like Vernon Golston, that's mine. Aaron
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: Maybin was another one of mine. Yeah, I thought I
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: thought I didn't like High Tower because we already had spikes.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: That was mine. I was like, no, No, that's bad,
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: that's bad. It's like not even the same universe of
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: of players there. It was like super Bowls that wouldn't
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: have been one without him, to know, Boom Tower. And
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: you guys saw Trey Flowers visiting with Miami. So I guess,
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: tease your report. I guess, no Trey Flowers here perhaps,
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: but um, he's visiting with Miami. Yeah, I was reported
- 1:59:16Speaker 1: yesterday they're giving him a kick on the tires and
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: it's because of my tweet. You're moving a shaker. Well,
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: I think that's gonna do it already, Yeah, already made
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: it through a Red Eyes show. I want to thank
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: I want to thank Paul seriousness. The fact that I
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: didn't have to do this show completely by myself, that
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: you two came in is much appreciated. Oh that's why
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: I had to, because I was looking at a back
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: and forth with with Marine Corps Matt for two hours.
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: Make anybody want it back. Wouldn't have been Patriots and
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: it wouldn't have been my first solo Showy, No, that's
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: it would have been the maiden voyage of Pep and Deuce,
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: but usually those are like July second shows when Paul
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: by yourself. This is you by yourself. Oh that must
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: be tough. I don't know how you do it. But
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: thank you everybody for tuning in, and of course tune
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: in tomorrow night for the pregame show I think, but
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: for five five forty five pregame show, we'll have Christian
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: Arcam filling in for Hardy with our team Paul and myself,
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: and then postgame show, of course we'll see what happens.
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: We don't know. Start us going to play. I just
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: don't know. We'll just have to see. Like Fred, you
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: can't have an opinion, just don't know. It's the preseason, baby,
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: so let's go last one, get it out of the way,
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: and then we are on to the regular season. We'll
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: see you next Tuesday. Thank you for downloading this podcast.
