- 2:09every Christmas. That's just something that Auntie does, Okay, A gift that
- 2:15gives and gives and gifts. So, parents, here's your chance to meet
- 2:23an author, a children's book author. I think this might be my first
- 2:28one ever. Here we are about to meet missus Stacy Willis. Come on
- 2:32up, girly, ah, how are you. I am doing well.
- 2:43Thank you for asking, Thank you, thank you, Oh woile great to
- 2:49hear. Thank you for joining us tonight. So tonight we are talking children's
- 2:54books, one of my favorites because the teen books I don't have time for
- 3:00them emotional means, in the in the the middle grades, they're a little
- 3:08bit too adventurous for me. So the children's books, it's beautiful. I
- 3:14can read thirty six pages and be the happiest person in America. Yes,
- 3:19that's how I feel too. So tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 3:23Okay. So my name is Stacy Willis. I my profession. I'm a
- 3:31case manager. I work with the elderly and disabled waiver population here in Georgia.
- 3:38I'm also hoo I wear so many hats. I used to be a
- 3:43teacher. Okay, hold on, you said teacher. Yeah, well a
- 3:49teacher A. I used to work with teacher A with special needs, special
- 3:54needs, I say, elementary, elementary, elementary. Yeah, So I
- 4:06did that early intervention with babies. That was me, did that. And
- 4:14so I love, love, love love working with children. That is my
- 4:20heart. I love it with a passion. And so here I am children's
- 4:30author. This is actually the anniversary of our first book. Yay, congratulations,
- 4:40happy anniversary, thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm so
- 4:44excited. But then on top of that, I'm gonna tell you to thank
- 4:47you. Okay, okay, One, thank you for working with special needs.
- 4:54My sister Brittain, God bless her in Heaven has special needs and she
- 5:00was the strongest person I've ever met, all the surgeries, everything, she
- 5:04has cerebral policy. So one, I thank you for that. Two,
- 5:10thank you just for being a teacher period that little bit of time during the
- 5:15pandemic. I didn't get my matter of fact, I need to talk to
- 5:19my daughter because I didn't get my teacher appreciation gift. So I gon neither.
- 5:26When we get off here of me and her need to have a conversation
- 5:29with that. But I saw how hard it is for you guys, and
- 5:35you guys deserve way more of everything that we can give. Yeah, because
- 5:46I mean truly, you guys are a part of so many villages. My
- 5:50hat goes off to you guys. So yeah, double thank you, thank
- 5:56you. So this book, my friend Bigfoot, it is the cutest little
- 6:02book, thank you one. I love the title my friend Bigfoot. I
- 6:09called my daughter big head all the time I got three, I called all
- 6:13them big heads. And to see the little title said Bigfoot, I said,
- 6:16I might have to change it around. Call bigfoot I think would work
- 6:21for all of them. But tell us, how did you come up with
- 6:24that title? Well, I as a child growing up, I used to
- 6:30reading sci fi books and one of my favorite one was about my friend Bigfoot.
- 6:40And you know, because I was a mystery novel I was a diehard
- 6:44Nancy Drew and HARDI Boys fan and all that stuff. I was just all
- 6:50of that. And then one of the most important thing was I love making
- 6:57people laugh and doing COVID. People you know was dying. Kids were just
- 7:04going through a rough time, and all I wanted to them, wanted to
- 7:09do was make people laugh, learn a lesson, but make them laugh at
- 7:15the same time. Awesome. Yeah, because during COVID we really didn't need
- 7:21that. I remember at one point in time, I was in sleeping because
- 7:28I was so uncertain what was going to happen. And when I did return
- 7:31back to work, my kids would I would call them on my way home.
- 7:38They were literally running their rooms, close the door and my my son
- 7:41would have a candle light saucing at the step. Wow. And I was
- 7:45like, this is really what our life has become. But I started to
- 7:49take it as a chance to really get to know my kids and really get
- 7:54to be around them more, and we got creative. So you you were
- 8:00a piece of the puzzle that we needed to get through that. Yes,
- 8:05children's books. Ooh, that's a whole world. Yes, it is myself
- 8:15and then it's a whole different entity when we're talking about black and brown authors.
- 8:26Yeah, and like we were talking about off camera, like this is
- 8:30really like a whole world of black and brown authors. It is what needs
- 8:35you want to step into it? Well, I wanted to challenge myself.
- 8:45You know, people kept telling me, well, now it's not the time,
- 8:50No, you can't afford to do it. Don't do it. Wait,
- 8:56you're not hearing God correctly. And I just was like, you know
- 9:01what, if I don't do it, I'm never going to do it.
- 9:09And I just decided to go ahead and step out on faith. And just
- 9:13like Mike White Girl said, just like like he says, just do it,
- 9:16Let's do it. Just do it. And that's what I did.
- 9:20I was I got connected with the right person. Okay. Just that helped
- 9:28me, and that mentored me, that was there for me, and before
- 9:33I knew it, my fam Brickfoot was born, you know. And the
- 9:39thing about it I sat down in for I think it was what I wrote
- 9:45this book within two days, wow, two days. I was done with
- 9:54it. Within two days. I wasn't working really and so it was like,
- 10:00okay, go ahead and do it. And that's what I did.
- 10:05So, like he said, I'm gonna give you what you need to get
- 10:09it done. All you gotta do is come to me. Mm hmm.
- 10:11Yeah, listen to them. And he says, because if you're listening to
- 10:16them, you might have some sies issues, but you listen to God and
- 10:20you stepped out on faith. And now we had a whole anniversary of my
- 10:26Little Bigfoot look wrote that one last year, being turned around and wrote the
- 10:33affirmation book this year, and then I did another affirmation book for women.
- 10:41So I have been busy. See, I've been I've been busy. My
- 10:48mind is like going, going, going, and I'm like, okay,
- 10:52okay, okay, what can what can I create next? What can I
- 10:56do next? Don't worry? Yeah? And I'm like, wow, look
- 11:03what Look what I gave birth to. You know what, God's funny.
- 11:07When he ready to show out, he is going to show out. You
- 11:13know, he ain't coming with it. Little You're like, all right,
- 11:16you want me to do something? Here You're going You're like, hold up,
- 11:18God, Now, I know I wanted you to do this, but
- 11:20I'm gonna need you to step back a little bit. I ain't ready for
- 11:24all that. Don't tell me what you ain't ready for, because you already
- 11:28said you wanted this, so he gonna make it do it? Yeah?
- 11:31So and and when you see him put it together. Mm hmm, all
- 11:37you can do is say thank you. Yes, that's all you can say
- 11:43is thank you. Yeah, that's it. Publishing this book, what was
- 11:50your least favorite part of it? Hmm it will sometimes having to go back
- 12:01and forth with the editor okay, okay, yeah, sometimes it was you
- 12:09know, you know, because we we're having to do the emails and stuff
- 12:15like that. So I would say it was just having you know, like,
- 12:20Okay, this is how I see it mm hmm, and they may
- 12:26have sawt a different way. So it was like, let's work together.
- 12:28How can we you know? So it was the It was the It could
- 12:33have been the editing, the editing part as well. It was the main
- 12:39was one of the main things. As far as the illustrations. Oh my
- 12:45god, illustrations on point. So I guess that might have been the most
- 12:52favorite part. Huh. Yes, the most favorite part was the illustrations.
- 12:58And and to sit there and at the end, I go, what wow,
- 13:03I actually you know, I actually I actually kept my promise to my
- 13:09dad, kept my promise to myself, and I did it. That is
- 13:16is what is up? So how did you find an illustrator? I mean,
- 13:22this is my first time speaking to the children's off there. Do you
- 13:26give them the book and they read it and they present the illustrations or you
- 13:31gave them? What I did was the person who did the publisher he did
- 13:39the editor. He was able to find the editor. He was able to
- 13:43find the illustrator as well. So it was like, you know, people
- 13:54thought it was gonna be like like it was gonna call a whole lot of
- 14:00money. Mm hmmm. And I thought so as well until he told me.
- 14:05He was like, no, we're gonna do a payment plan and it
- 14:11only gonna cost you two thousand dollars. Are you serious? I am serious.
- 14:22Your illustrations, your editor, and your publishing for children's book book fully
- 14:31colored. We need to talk of some black and white. We talk about
- 14:33some colored. Only calls me two thousand col that's that. Look, that's
- 14:45favor. That is truly favor. I've seen it, and I've looked at
- 14:52things because it's just national authors writing Nana ram a month and s and looking
- 15:00at price figures and stuff like this. I've seen the cheapest as five thousand
- 15:05dollars and that's just for the illustrations. And for you to get all of
- 15:11that with two thousand dollars, are you I'm telling you two thousand? God
- 15:18loves that is. That's what he did. That's awesome. So tell us
- 15:26a little bit about don't give us much, but tell us a little bit
- 15:28about my friend Bigfoot. Well, my friend book Foot is kind of based
- 15:33a little bit on my a little bit about my son. Okay, my
- 15:37son has specially well he's autistic. So it's kind of like some things that
- 15:46he would do that was like, okay, let's make let me put a
- 15:52little bit of his personality in the story. And it kind of it kind
- 15:58of at the end towards the like the end of it, it's kind of
- 16:03like it would make you want more, like where is this book leading to?
- 16:11Like what what? What's the you know, it takes you through a
- 16:15journey of his of of of the guy, the little boy name is Alex.
- 16:21It takes you through a journey of how Alex views his surrounding, his
- 16:27environment, his social uh circle, his friends, his family, and even
- 16:36Bigfoot. And it takes you through a journey of okay, is Alex ever
- 16:44going to hold himself accountable? Who? You know, is Bigfoot gonna hold
- 16:52Alex accountable? Who's gonna hold who accountable? So it takes you through a
- 16:56journey of how Alex and for you know, how they kind of work together.
- 17:04And then at the end, it's like okay, what next? What
- 17:10what? What? What? What? Is next, because you don't laugh
- 17:11through the book and you're like, what is next? Well, what is
- 17:15next? It's the affirmation book. See, that's what I'm talking about.
- 17:22That that's that's what's next, is the affirmation book. And it's like wow,
- 17:29okay, and it just shows you all the the things that you know
- 17:37you can do, how you can process accountability, how you can process your
- 17:44feelings. You know, because my background is in psychology, so coloring is
- 17:52very therapeutical. Yes, yes, so, and having these affirmation I am
- 17:57creative. A lot of kids need that. I got purpose, a lot
- 18:02of kids need to understand that. Alex needed to understand that about himself.
- 18:10So you have a question from someone in it that's viewing. They said,
- 18:14that's sweet, how does your How does your son feel about being a part
- 18:18of your book? Oh? He loves it. He's nineteen now. And
- 18:27he was like, you know, because I made him the co author as
- 18:33well, so and y'all he is so cute and handsome. Yeah, he
- 18:38absolutely loves the fact that he's a part of the story, you know.
- 18:47And he looks back and he goes, you know what I did do that
- 18:49then? And I'm like, yeah, you did, you did that and
- 18:52that was hilarious. So you know what, we ain't even gonna take no
- 18:57break tonight. I hope you don't mind. We just so enjoy speaking to
- 19:02you. But you know, nobody told you before we got online that the
- 19:07second half or usually have those fun questions. Uh huh. So here are
- 19:11our fun questions. Okay, if you can choose any Disney character, please
- 19:25thankful? Who would it be? And why? Oh, let's see any
- 19:33Disney character. You know, we had to do Disney because we talking about
- 19:38the Kittles tonight. I know, Oh my gook this so Disney has so
- 19:45many Oh but I personally thought the genie from a Latin Oh, you know
- 20:02what, that would be good because he taught it was a lot of lessons
- 20:08learned in that, right, A lot a lot of lessons learned from him,
- 20:18because yeah, because he took Aladdin through a series of okay, you
- 20:23do this, this is what's gonna happen, and at the end it was
- 20:29all about acceptance. Yeah, so that's why I thought. So who do
- 20:33you think I was thinking about? The Princess and the frog? Oh?
- 20:49Yeah, which one are you talking about? The Prince? The Prince Prince
- 20:59Nabi? Oh, I can see that. Mm hmmm, I can see
- 21:04that. I can see Yeah, I thought about him. You know.
- 21:11So let's see if you can have any of the Disney characters be because you
- 21:19know, all Disney characters have that little sidekick. Everybody has a side yea.
- 21:25If anybody can be a sidekick for your son, or the character that
- 21:32your son portrays in the book, or the character that is similar to your
- 21:37son, who would it be? Oh, or you can make up one,
- 21:42you can create your sidekick. Well listen, that would be but my
- 21:53son Donald Duck. Why Donald? Even though I think Donald was the coolest,
- 22:03I wasn't the big Mickey Mickey Mouse fan. I thought Donald was the
- 22:08man. Yeah, it will, it will kind of be done. It
- 22:12will kind of be done. Duck. It was because I I it was
- 22:18just something about that duck that made me just I mean I just guess what
- 22:25the joy and laughter? He yeah, that's yeah, Like I'm not the
- 22:33duck to play with. But then at the same time, he was the
- 22:37duck to play with. It was his the emotions that he always portrayed,
- 22:45they got se Mickey was always happy and like Donald was true Donald, I
- 22:49don't like you quack quite quack what you're about to do about it? You
- 22:52know what I'm saying, right right, right right. It was like,
- 22:56okay, this, this is where I stand. But it was justhilarious because
- 23:00it was like it was like, really, you know, like why are
- 23:07you so hate? Okay, Donald, I understand what you know. I
- 23:11don't understand, but I see where you're coming from. Me and you we
- 23:17can hang out together. Yes, I'm telling you. So, it would
- 23:22be. It would be that I was a big when I was going on,
- 23:26I was a big Disney thing. I read all the Disney books.
- 23:33Really, yes, when I I mean I started reading Disney when I was
- 23:37like four years old, that is what's I uh? And like I and
- 23:47and then you know, of course I grew out of Disney. But and
- 23:53and because I started wanting the mystery the novels the I started, I'm like,
- 24:00oh, Nancy Drew by so what time I game to fourth grade?
- 24:03I was into Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. Okay, okay, So
- 24:08it was never the love novels. Oh I couldn't stand there. But then
- 24:12I always found myself going back to the imagination of little kids, like oh
- 24:19wow, you know, going going back to that now they there's not that
- 24:30much Nancy Drew, you know, like what we do have the books,
- 24:34I would say that it's not that much of a Nancy Drew drive. Now
- 24:41it's Maddic Treehouse. What's the other one, the comedy one that my daughter's
- 24:51like, it's called the Weird School series that it has about maybe thirty to
- 24:59forty books in it, and now it's coming back because the Hardy Boys all
- 25:04their covers are being reinvented. I think Nancy Drew is going to be next.
- 25:08I haven't seen them yet. By the Hardy Boys, all the covers
- 25:14are being remade, so they're being reintroduced to the younger generation. Now,
- 25:19just along with the Babysitters Club, they're being reintroduced to a younger generation.
- 25:26So guess what, years years, years years down the line, your book
- 25:32is going to be reintroduced to you. Yes, yes, And that's I'm
- 25:40just so excited because and and and and me. I'm diverse, right,
- 25:45I love uh, I love to read different things, and but one of
- 25:53my favorite topics was always really going back reading about us, you know,
- 26:03may Angela lifest and huge those people, and my all time favorite novel was
- 26:11Roll of thunder here my cid. Oh my god, I remember that.
- 26:18Yeah, be Unbroken. Oh we've read that in school together, and my
- 26:26teacher had these reading comprehension questions. So every time you read a book now
- 26:33you just problem shouts out to missus Newton, who still comes to the library
- 26:38today, and miss Randall. Thank you guys for installing that love of books
- 26:42and me, oh my god. Well, we are coming to the end
- 26:48of our segment, but before we go, you are coming back because we
- 26:53got to talk about these affirmations. So I think the Week of a Young
- 27:00Reader is sometime in February. I will look that up tonight and we're gonna
- 27:03set up some dates. Okay, that sounds great, but before we do
- 27:08any of that, tell us how we can contact you follow you. And
- 27:14they had a copy of that book and that affirmation guy twoks. So yes,
- 27:22yes, my friend Bigfoot and the affirmation book, so you can you
