- 0:00Music and welcome back to the Boundary
- 0:47Corner Podcast along with my partner Brian Siegler.
- 0:50I am Curtis Wilson and this episode is brought to you by
- 0:53Doctor Jeremy Counts down at the Main Street Pharmacy in
- 0:57Blacksburg. Your friendly neighborhood
- 0:59pharmacy, 301 S Main, St. Blacksburg, VA Buddy.
- 1:05It's been a long time since been a two man show.
- 1:07Yeah man, it's it's kind of weird seeing just me and you on
- 1:11this, this picture here, man. It's been about a year, this
- 1:14time in 2023, when last time we went Just Me and You on the solo
- 1:20here A. 100% about a year ago Now Our other two guys, Tally
- 1:28and Shelton, out tonight. Shelton is knee deep into the
- 1:33Hokies BC game right now writing an article for Key Play.
- 1:37Obviously he'll bring some knowledge back when he comes
- 1:39with us. Tally's got some personal things
- 1:41going on. If you're not aware, Tally's son
- 1:45got injured in some basketball practice about a month and a
- 1:49half ago. They were finally getting that
- 1:52straight, getting cast off. So he's having to take care of
- 1:54him, which we completely understand being fathers
- 1:57ourselves. They both will be back very soon
- 1:59and we definitely miss them tonight because we're A-Team
- 2:03here. So, but Brian, has everything
- 2:06been going on your end? You got the game up.
- 2:08I mean, Toki's up five with right at six minutes left off 6.
- 2:12Poteet makes a free throw. Yeah, I got the game on.
- 2:16Been following a little bit here, you know lead, lead man,
- 2:20I'll take it. Lead to lead the way.
- 2:23This team has kind of been up and down in the month of January
- 2:25in particular. I'll take a lead right now.
- 2:28Take a lead that is now 7 points, so we'll be we'll be
- 2:31continuing to follow that. Make a little updates here
- 2:34throughout the episode. Got quite a few things to unload
- 2:37tonight. At the back half of the episode
- 2:39we are going to reveal what we call the perfect schedule.
- 2:42Yes, we know some things got leaked today and some things
- 2:45were put out there, but we still had our perfect schedules the
- 2:49way we felt would be the best for the Hokies in 2024.
- 2:52We're going to discuss that and we're also going to be
- 2:55discussing the early enrollees. There were nine of this 2024
- 2:59class already on campus already in winter workouts.
- 3:02Kind of taking a look at those guys and seeing potentially who
- 3:05can make impact. Special team is anybody going to
- 3:07need to sit a year. But Brian, this afternoon, man,
- 3:11I mean you talk about, I don't know how to express it like guy,
- 3:18we were kids when he was playing.
- 3:21We've watched his, you know, own field as a coach.
- 3:25But what a pleasure it was this afternoon sitting with JC Price.
- 3:30Yeah, man, it was definitely kind of surreal, right?
- 3:35Yeah, that's probably the best way to to describe it here.
- 3:38Kind of surreal. You know, somebody that you know
- 3:41when we first got, got into following the Hokies, I mean he
- 3:47was that guy and, and and there's a guy that was was
- 3:53living in the trenches about that time playing wreck ball,
- 3:57starting to get, you know, looking at middle school
- 3:59football. Like guy like that was somebody
- 4:01that you kind of looked up to. And obviously with him being Aga
- 4:05in the early 2000s and then coming back to the Hokies a few
- 4:08years back, I mean this is kind of a a big full circle moment
- 4:11getting him on the podcast and being able to talk to him and
- 4:14and kind of cut up a little bit man, because he's a big
- 4:17personality and he definitely let's that shine.
- 4:20Well, he does let it shine, and we had him for about 30 minutes
- 4:23this afternoon. He was up in at a barbecue joint
- 4:27in Northern Virginia or up in the DC Northern Virginia area
- 4:31traveling this week. So Brian, without further ado,
- 4:36let's go ahead and let's play our interview with coach and
- 4:40hokey legend JC Price, The Boundary Corner Podcast
- 4:44listeners. Today we have a very special
- 4:46guest with us. He is currently the defensive
- 4:49line coach for your Virginia Tech Hokies.
- 4:51He is a hokey legend himself playing from 1992 to 1995 where
- 4:57he was an All American. He also is a holder of the lunch
- 5:00pail. Ladies and gentlemen, this is JC
- 5:03Price, Coach Price. Hey, how we doing?
- 5:07Hey Coach, how we doing today? Doing great, man.
- 5:09Doing great. How you looks like you.
- 5:12Where are you coach? I'm at like a barbecue joint
- 5:16here in DC kind of rolled in here.
- 5:20You know, I rolled in a little earlier than I thought.
- 5:22I didn't realize. I thought the the ride from
- 5:24Raleigh would be a little bit longer.
- 5:26And I just stopped off. Grabbed something to eat with.
- 5:29Great spot, man. I'm not.
- 5:30I'm not. I'm not Quinn with the expert
- 5:33dining tips, but this place is pretty.
- 5:36The brisket was pretty good. Nice.
- 5:39And we can still break Red Hokey style there.
- 5:41That's what it's all about. Red.
- 5:44Hokey. Style.
- 5:46All right, coach. So I know you got a you got a
- 5:49thin window here. You're on the road you're you're
- 5:52you're doing a lot of talking to recruits this week.
- 5:55So where are you heading the rest of the week?
- 5:59What, what's, what's that kind of on your schedule and and and
- 6:02and who are we looking at? Well this the week started off
- 6:06yesterday or actually yesterday in Raleigh and and basically
- 6:11right now this week I'm I'm seeing D lineman you know I'm
- 6:13seeing some D lineman that aren't in my primary recruiting
- 6:16area so I I'll be I was in Raleigh yesterday in Durham now
- 6:22I'm up here in DC which I still recruit a little bit of Maryland
- 6:26emergence from Maryland So me EB and my coach Pride will be
- 6:30floating around DC area tomorrow and little bit on.
- 6:45The. Footprint.
- 6:55Let's talk about this. What has been the biggest key to
- 7:04success when it comes to recruitment?
- 7:05Not only the high schoolers, but also the portal guys to
- 7:08Blacksburg, because obviously we've seen a change in the last
- 7:12few years what what you and other members.
- 7:14And then you on top of that, you put, you know, us in a room of
- 7:18kids and we're just ourselves. When we try to show the kids who
- 7:21we are every day, we don't we don't try to put on a false
- 7:24bravado or a front and try to be somebody we're not when they're
- 7:27there and be somebody different when they get on campus.
- 7:30We we just who we are. We're we're a group of guys who
- 7:33have the same common goals and enjoy being around each other
- 7:36and and Coach Prize put together a hell of a staff.
- 7:38You know it's you know a staff of like minded people and you
- 7:43know we have a good time every day and we just you know when
- 7:46you when you when you have fun every day at work.
- 7:49I don't know if you can call it work.
- 7:51Yeah, that that's. I love you saying that because
- 7:54it's you talk like minded people and you are who you are because
- 7:57you know they are. Like you said, who you are on
- 7:59the road is who you are in Blacksburg.
- 8:01And you know, I love hearing that and obviously we know you
- 8:05are who you are because we we we were chopping it up with Coach
- 8:08Price for a few minutes before we hopped on and y'all this is
- 8:11who he is behind the scenes. This is who he is right up front
- 8:15in living color talking to us today.
- 8:16Oh. I I tell people all the time,
- 8:19I'm too old to lie. I can't.
- 8:20I don't worry about that. You know, too old and too dumb
- 8:23to lie. Just just go be yourself and you
- 8:27know and just present Blacksburg for what it is the greatest
- 8:30small college town in America. And either, you know, it's going
- 8:35to resonate with some kids and some kids it's it's not for and
- 8:39if it's not for you, that's OK you know, you know you can only
- 8:42you. You only go to one school, so.
- 8:45Yep. And I mean it's good hearing
- 8:47that and I know you talked about you know just being your your
- 8:49authentic selves and you know we we had some some feedback
- 8:52directly on that. We had Keelan Adams dad on and
- 8:58Kyron Drone's dad on back before the holidays there.
- 9:01And that that was the thing that they kept talking about
- 9:04throughout that episode was just how first of all you guys are
- 9:07and how you're you are who you are, whether you're getting
- 9:10talked to outside of the recruiting cycle or you know
- 9:14whatever it is, you know you guys have always been authentic
- 9:17the whole time. So I think that's that's big for
- 9:20sure and that that's that's definitely resonating.
- 9:23Let's let's flip it a little bit to more kind of current roster,
- 9:27upcoming roster. The last season D line helped
- 9:30the Hokies top 15 in sacks in the country.
- 9:34You got you got Kendricks, Payne and Pollard moving on obviously
- 9:37at this point. But she kind of turned to the
- 9:38portal into the junior college ranks and got three impressive
- 9:43folks coming in with Peebles, Gilliam and Copeland with those
- 9:46big holes to fill in the interior.
- 9:48What do you like most about each of those additions?
- 9:52Well, you know, first thing is, you know when you when you lose
- 9:543 valuable players who play. I mean when you think about
- 9:57Norell and Mario who play a lot of football and then just the
- 10:01impact that Phil Darius made in his one year of eligibility
- 10:04because he, you know, had set the year to 20 fillies.
- 10:07You know, we looked and it was it was kind of a strange feel
- 10:09because you have guys, you know, that are within the pipeline and
- 10:14and we felt like, you know, and I'm excited about those guys
- 10:17that are coming up. But all three of them had you
- 10:19know a major injury. They didn't get to practice a
- 10:21lot, you know. So we felt like their
- 10:24development was probably a little bit behind because they
- 10:26they didn't get to practice much.
- 10:27You know, Gunner had the thumb then the knee.
- 10:30Malachi had the knee. Lamar had the, you know, it was
- 10:33a back and it was just you know, so it kind of stung to their
- 10:36growth a little bit. So we thought there was
- 10:38definitely a need to go out and get some guys who played a lot
- 10:40of ball and how blessed are we to get in the as people's man.
- 10:44I mean you talk about a guy who can go proven proven player in
- 10:48the ACC all Conference. I mean God leave now.
- 10:52I pinch myself every day. I couldn't wait to get him on
- 10:55campus, lock him in. I just was pinching myself every
- 10:58day that would, you know she did a great job with the prior
- 11:00relationship with the family and he would help recruiting the
- 11:03Duke to begin with. And you know and there was
- 11:07pressure on him to return the Duke and you know he stuck
- 11:10through his word and man he's on campus right now lighting it up.
- 11:14You know Kelvin Gillian, the Highland Springs guy, you know,
- 11:19I I I couldn't actually recruit him when he came out because I
- 11:21was at Marshall. So he was a little bit out of my
- 11:23range when I was at Marshall. But real disappointed he didn't
- 11:27go to Tech to begin with. But he tends to go to Oklahoma
- 11:29and I think it's going to be a a really good deal for him because
- 11:33we play a we're going to play a different style than they played
- 11:36Oklahoma. I think this could definitely
- 11:37fit his skill set a little bit more and real excited to have
- 11:42him. And I mean Kamari.
- 11:45I mean, what a story Kamari has. I mean that guy, he was down
- 11:49there in 757. Kellam High School, one of one
- 11:52of the best high school coaches in the 757.
- 11:55He's retired now, got in Chris DeWitt, which is a good friend
- 11:58of mine. I was at Marshall and we were
- 12:01recruiting and he was playing middle linebacker.
- 12:03And of course I was recruiting to be AB lineman.
- 12:06I didn't tell him I was recruiting to be a linebacker.
- 12:10But after I saw him run and then you know it didn't work out for
- 12:13us at Marshall, you know he wanted a little bit more high
- 12:15academic side. So he ended up going to Army and
- 12:18and then didn't. The army wasn't for him and so
- 12:21then he went to the JUCO which shot out to the Iowa Western
- 12:24guys. You talk about the junior
- 12:25college that's doing it right, holding guys accountable, not
- 12:29just taking any any time Dick and Harry off the street, you
- 12:32know vetting the guys, taking the right guys into the program
- 12:35and holding them accountable. I mean, Iowa Western needs to be
- 12:38a staple for our recruiting process every year and and
- 12:41Kamari fit that building with their their athletic ability.
- 12:44Man, I'm I'm really excited to have those guys.
- 12:47Man, that's that's great to hear.
- 12:49The yeah, the the Aneas people's won.
- 12:52Obviously we got to see him playing that bowl game and then
- 12:55the last play of the bowl game right before June.
- 12:58I think it's impressive and it says a lot about y'all y'all
- 13:02letting you know it wasn't any ill will.
- 13:04Like you want to go play with your old school, go play, have a
- 13:07great time, enjoy those perks. He goes out there and balls
- 13:10including makes the basically the game-winning tackle or
- 13:13game-winning snack air and you just saw it with him.
- 13:17You know Gillian, the Copeland story is an amazing story and it
- 13:20also shows you that young man's work ethic, right?
- 13:23Like he didn't quit, he didn't quit.
- 13:25So, so many people would stop on that and I want to kind of keep
- 13:29it in house but keep work that given how things are going.
- 13:32But what returning player in your position room last year
- 13:37that'll be back this year showed the most growth from this point
- 13:40last year winter workout until the bowl game at Tulane.
- 13:44Who took the biggest steps in your eyes, in in whatever way?
- 13:49I'd probably you know, I probably have to say Cole
- 13:52Nelson. You know I think Cole the last
- 13:55couple years he had a a foot that was bothering him and he
- 14:00was he was fighting through it and you know he didn't start to
- 14:04begin the season. You know Keith Schonberg S had a
- 14:06hell of a camp and was penciling as a starter and and all Cole
- 14:11did was keep working and obviously he showed some things
- 14:15this year that he hadn't shown before some play making
- 14:18abilities that that I asked him, you know, you know he he had to
- 14:23show those qualities. You know he he had been a steady
- 14:25Eddy guy and kind of a I'm always going to be in the right
- 14:28place but he wasn't making splash plays until this year and
- 14:32I figured a little bit had to do with his foot getting a little
- 14:34bit better and all of a sudden you you you saw his athletic
- 14:37ability but Cole has the toughness in leadership that
- 14:42that we desperately need and and that he's done a great job
- 14:45already. You know we haven't really seen
- 14:47the guys. That's what's crazy.
- 14:48You know we get back we get back from the bowl game and we we
- 14:52immediately go on the road and those guys start working out and
- 14:56and I know Cole is is is been in touch with me and let me know
- 14:59how things are going and he's he's just become a great leader
- 15:02and a great player for us. Let me ask this, Coach Price and
- 15:06how you like, how you guys deal with it because you mentioned
- 15:08Cole with the foot injury. When you go, when you know a guy
- 15:12is nicked up or a guy isn't quite right, you have the
- 15:14training staff. But how important is it having
- 15:18the relationship where they'll they're willing to tell you,
- 15:21Coach, this isn't feeling right because obviously you're out
- 15:25there and you're having to make decisions.
- 15:26You know of who's going to start rotate, who's going to play my
- 15:29nickel sets, who's going to maybe play a A3 technique when
- 15:33we go with a small package, how important is it that they come
- 15:37to? You're laughing.
- 15:38Go ahead, Coach. I mean, it's, you know it.
- 15:43It's it's it's important that they communicate and it's
- 15:47important. That's all the guys don't Don't
- 15:49think being in the training room's a sign of weakness.
- 15:51That doesn't mean that you're weak.
- 15:52That means you preempt or you continue.
- 15:54Once something bothers you, it's going to bother you until the
- 15:57season's over. But the thing I always tell them
- 16:00is this PG on this thing or is this?
- 16:02No, you can let it ride. So what I tell them all the time
- 16:06is nobody gives a shit if you play.
- 16:09You're not hurt, right? They're not going to have the
- 16:11asterisks in the comments the Hokies played today, but Colton
- 16:13Nelson wasn't feeling good. Nobody gives a shit.
- 16:16If you're on the field, you're expect to perform, expect to
- 16:19play. Now if you're injured, then you
- 16:21can't play. That's different.
- 16:23But if you you know being hurt and fighting through injuries is
- 16:26a part of sports in general. I have a daughter that's
- 16:29fighting through a a knee right now.
- 16:31It's an 11th grader. So it's just that's a part of
- 16:34the deal. If you if you want to be a major
- 16:35college athlete, then you got to learn how to fight through it.
- 16:38But they always get on me. Oh, it won't be in the paper.
- 16:41And I'm playing, you know, there's no astronaut.
- 16:43I'm not going to change the score because Cole wasn't
- 16:44feeling good today. So that's why.
- 16:46That's why I started laughing. He only he only had two tackles
- 16:50but he's got a he's got a knee that he's dealing with so you
- 16:53know that's all right so. Being easy on him in the press
- 16:55conference, Nobody cares, man. Nobody cares.
- 16:59I told him I care. Yeah.
- 17:01But nobody else outside the building cares.
- 17:03Well, what happened so much with us as fans, if we see a guy not
- 17:08playing that great when when they've exploded a few games
- 17:10before, it's like what's wrong? Did he he tweaked something and
- 17:14and it's like you said you they've got to fight through it.
- 17:17But if they're not communicating with what the issue is like, I
- 17:22know that probably frustrates you when you see somebody not as
- 17:24explosive and you're like. Listen.
- 17:27Well, I know why. You guys won't know why.
- 17:29Because we're not the NFL. We don't have to just disclose
- 17:31our injuries. You know so.
- 17:34You know, you know, the NFL has to do it for all the gambling
- 17:37sites. You know, you got to mention it,
- 17:38who's playing everything, where, you know, we try to keep those
- 17:41things in house and because we don't want to give our opponents
- 17:44a an advantage because they know somebody's a little beamed up or
- 17:48or whatnot and it's nobody's business but ours.
- 17:51And it it is frustrating sometimes when you see a guy
- 17:54really have two great weeks and all of a sudden he doesn't play
- 17:57up to his capability. But that that's all part of it
- 18:01and you've got to be able to to navigate that and work through
- 18:04it. You got guys like me that go
- 18:05back and watch the tape. I was like, is he, is he a
- 18:07little step slower? Is this like a matchup issue?
- 18:10Like what? What's?
- 18:11What's happening? Here.
- 18:12Yeah, Coach Price gained 10 lbs. This week.
- 18:15He's not coaching as well, so. Oh.
- 18:20God. Nobody cares, man.
- 18:22Nobody cares. That's right.
- 18:23That's right. You bailed that one.
- 18:25Let's let's let's turn it over a little bit here.
- 18:29So last season Coach Pry came in and he kind of kept a good hold
- 18:34of the reigns of the defense last year and then that got
- 18:37fully handed over to Coach Marv in year two.
- 18:41What's the biggest, I'll say the non tendency difference between
- 18:46Coach Pry and Coach Marv as a defensive coordinator.
- 18:49You know Marv, Marv was brought up under coach Price to live and
- 18:54play for Coach Pry. So there's not, there's not a
- 18:57lot of difference, maybe some third down stuff.
- 19:01But you know our first and second down calls are probably
- 19:05the same that that coach Prize used his whole career And and
- 19:09don't get it wrong now he was in our meetings.
- 19:11So don't. Don't think he wasn't in there
- 19:13voice of pain, just because he wasn't calling it, but you know,
- 19:18marvelous, he loosened. The reins He didn't.
- 19:22Handed nothing over, though, he was in the meetings plenty.
- 19:26Don't worry about that, you know.
- 19:28And I think we got better as as we simplified things as we
- 19:33eliminated some calls. You know the biggest difference
- 19:37between this year and last year one I did a better job coaching
- 19:40the D line as far as getting off blocks and and getting more of
- 19:44what coach Pride wanted to see out of us.
- 19:47And then you know last year we we struggled playing man
- 19:50coverage and this year we could you know, and and me anytime
- 19:54Mars mentions you know what do you want to play?
- 19:56I want to play man coverage, and she didn't want to play man
- 19:58coverage because man coverage equals sax.
- 20:03That's a that's a mentality, right?
- 20:04That's a mentality. 100% and so we were able to do that.
- 20:07Obviously we had two, two of the best corners in the ACC and and
- 20:11and what a testament to our staff and and our culture to get
- 20:15all those guys back. Now we're so excited leaving
- 20:18joining the next year. Was having a better feel for
- 20:22like personnel and and that that comfort level was, did that play
- 20:26any into that those decisions as well or or was it just more of a
- 20:30you got better and you were able to kind of lean on those things
- 20:33that you wanted to do more often?
- 20:35Well I think anytime you know, first of all the first year we
- 20:39still had some guys who were on the fence didn't really.
- 20:42So that first year you had guys who are do I really want to buy
- 20:45in this culture do I really want to put in what what we think
- 20:48what we deem as necessary to go win a championship.
- 20:51And and we still had guys that were that were not bought in and
- 20:56and I would say we we had even more guys this year that than
- 20:59ever before that were bought into what we think what it takes
- 21:02necessary mentality and and those things it takes to win a
- 21:05championship and being selfless and being team first and all
- 21:09those things which you know that that led you know for us to stay
- 21:13together after a one and three start and and for the seven and
- 21:16six. I think it's a testament not
- 21:18just to the coaches that but to the players to the leadership on
- 21:21this team. You know and Norelle Pollard
- 21:23coming back for for another year of his Cobra gear and and what
- 21:27we talked to him about don't come back and be the same guy.
- 21:30You know leave leave a legacy mark of of not just going to a
- 21:33bowl but going but winning the bowl because we hadn't done that
- 21:36in so long and and that's what he did and and that's just you
- 21:40know it it was a lot of fun but now we got to take the next step
- 21:43got. To take the next step, let me
- 21:46ask this because you you mentioned the one and three
- 21:47start and then obviously the rebound in the last eight games
- 21:51going five and three, you know, keeping the Commonwealth Cup in
- 21:54Blacksburg. But I'm going to go back to the
- 21:56Syracuse game because that night your defensive line wreak
- 22:02absolute havoc on them. Tell me from like a sideline
- 22:07perspective when like all the practice that we everything,
- 22:10like every, you know, every calls, clicking, everything you
- 22:13tell them they're doing. Like, is it just, is it slow MO
- 22:17for you guys, or is it just so fast-paced?
- 22:20It's like Bam, another sack, another tackle.
- 22:24For loss as a coach you know you have you have some of those
- 22:27nights where you roll out there and it's just your night and
- 22:30that's kind of how that felt. It was whatever Marv called
- 22:34whatever I asked the deal on do, we were just rolling sevens and
- 22:37it's just you know you're going to have those nights and then
- 22:40you have nights where you're on the other side.
- 22:41You know and no matter what you do does this doesn't seem to to
- 22:45to work and it's definitely a lot more fun when you're all the
- 22:49sevens on the sidelines than when you're not.
- 22:51So but that that was a fun night for.
- 22:55Sure, 100%. And let me throw one.
- 22:59This is my throwback question. This is the only throwback
- 23:01question right now because you answered real good.
- 23:04I'm going to go back 1995 after the Cincinnati lost their
- 23:08stories. We've talked with some of your
- 23:09teammates from 1995, the White Victoria being one.
- 23:14Y'all call the players. Only me before the Miami game.
- 23:18You're O And two, this isn't like 9394, where Tech was riding
- 23:23some bad stuff that happened. Can you divulge anything you or
- 23:27any of the captains or anyone said in that meeting that
- 23:31sparked that run from the Miami game, where the first time we
- 23:35beat them to beat Texas in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on New
- 23:40Year's Eve. Because I mean, I think for me
- 23:44and Brian that I was 12 years old, that's kind of the first
- 23:48season I remember like I can remember pieces of that season.
- 23:52But what happened in that meeting, If you can divulge, if
- 23:54you can, if it's one upon, you know we get it.
- 23:58No, it was, it was actually, we never really caught it a players
- 24:02only meeting. It was actually we, you know we
- 24:05used to do those halftime locker rooms after the game and it was
- 24:09we were in the locker room after the Cincinnati game.
- 24:12And you know, I know I get a lot of credit for being a leader on
- 24:15that team. But the guy who really stood up
- 24:17was Jim Baron. Jim Baron said and said we're
- 24:20not. We're done with this shit and
- 24:21and we're going to work harder. We're going to invest more.
- 24:25And if that if that means we don't win, that's one thing.
- 24:27But we're going to invest more. We're going to work harder.
- 24:29We're going to do more film. We're just going to do more than
- 24:32anybody the rest of the year And and you know and obviously there
- 24:36was more than more than him spoke.
- 24:38He was the first person that really stood up and and we all
- 24:42took his lead that day and it wasn't a player it was in the
- 24:45locker room after the Cincinnati game after that that
- 24:47heartbreaking just lost 16 nothing in the mud and and
- 24:51that's what we did and and that's what we went out and and
- 24:53in the senior class just led by example and then we went out and
- 24:58and we outworked everybody from there on out and you know didn't
- 25:02miss anything and held guys accountable.
- 25:04And this and that said that we not to say we we didn't feel
- 25:08like we were before but we just turned it up a notch and you
- 25:13know and it didn't come easy. I mean everybody nobody
- 25:17remembers the schedule they remember the score they remember
- 25:20they remember the the wins loss. Nobody remembers that we only
- 25:23beat Navy 14 nothing. Then remember that we had to
- 25:26block 2 punts at Pitt to beat Pitt with a good running back
- 25:30Billy West. So you know people remember the
- 25:34the the the the final record they don't remember how you get
- 25:37there that's it's all about schedule.
- 25:38Well. I did.
- 25:40Now when I when I do remember, I don't remember the other two, I
- 25:43do remember the UDA game because being down in everything that
- 25:48happened in the second-half with, you know, there's always
- 25:51the story. The Sugar Bowl officials are
- 25:53there. They're choosing one of these
- 25:54teams and you get down and then defense bows up in the
- 25:58second-half. That allows Druckenmiller and
- 26:01them to lead it back. I mean, again, I'm 12.
- 26:04I'm trying to go back into memory bank, right?
- 26:07I'm a middle school. Kid, when's the last time you
- 26:09watched that game, Curtis to? Watch Which game are you?
- 26:12The game? It's awesome to watch.
- 26:14That one I did? I'll say this.
- 26:16Rest in Peaks, Hokey Hokey Tapes, man.
- 26:18Rest in Peaks Hokey Tapes. I do remember this though.
- 26:22You were on the coaching staff for the first game I attended
- 26:25was UCF back in 2003. That was the first game I ever
- 26:28set foot in lane. I know you were Aga at that
- 26:31point, like that was Aga year. Were you still in high school in
- 26:34O3? All three I was in VA.
- 26:36You're Aga. So you were on the sidelines the
- 26:39first time I was there. I watched that game in full this
- 26:42year. I don't.
- 26:42I just. I just went down a rabbit hole
- 26:44one night and just started watching it because, I mean,
- 26:46that is what it is. So.
- 26:48It's funny, you go back to the UVA game in 95, yeah?
- 26:51And. And everybody remembers certain
- 26:53things. And you can go back and watch
- 26:56the game and then you can call me back and tell me if I'm wrong
- 26:59or not because I haven't watched the game in a long time.
- 27:02I I remember the best personal foul ever by George Valrico,
- 27:07right? So they get and back then.
- 27:10I don't think it was automatic first down or something.
- 27:12But so he gets a personal foul. It's third in a mile.
- 27:17It gets him like the 4th and 1:00.
- 27:18Instead of kicking the field goal, they go for it and we stop
- 27:21them like they were going to kick a field goal.
- 27:24But he did something stupid, something aggressive and they
- 27:26fragged him and then we end up stopping him.
- 27:29And then the people remember the drunken.
- 27:31Another thing. But you know, obviously I'm
- 27:34biased. Other than Bruce Smith, I still
- 27:35think Cornell Brown's the the best player D line we've ever
- 27:38played at the junior tech other than Bruce.
- 27:41And literally we're on the sideline together before that
- 27:43last drive that we got the ball back to the offense and me and
- 27:46him. So we got to go do something and
- 27:49there was 3 plays in a row I think he had.
- 27:51ATFLI had a sack. He had a sack of the jog off the
- 27:54field and and and that's kind of, you know, you're going to
- 27:58have guys with that mentality that we're going to go out there
- 28:00and pick it upon ourselves, not and not hope that somebody makes
- 28:03a play, we're going to go make a play.
- 28:05So that's what I remember the most.
- 28:07Then being trapped on the bottom one of those piles, I thought I
- 28:09was going to suffocate. No fun at all.
- 28:15No, I want to give people the hell I'm not.
- 28:16I thought I was going to suffocate.
- 28:18I really did. But it was good.
- 28:20The first cigar. The first cigar, Right.
- 28:22So. There we go, Your cigar and you
- 28:24and you have made it a trend. I love the trend in that
- 28:27stadium, Coach. The The worst part is the locker
- 28:30room was like a hookah bar. After this year I we might be
- 28:33able to put the brakes on that thing.
- 28:35All cigar smoking needs to be outside, but it was.
- 28:38Then they'll turn the sprinklers on you again.
- 28:40Oh yeah, that that just that just made it so much better.
- 28:43I mean, I'm so glad they did that just showed you how petty
- 28:46they were. And it was just that that really
- 28:49made it even even better. It really did if they were to
- 28:51just took it. But that that just shows you
- 28:54what kind of robbery it is. And it was, it was funny.
- 28:57I got a kick out of that house, you know, honestly, I got a kick
- 29:00out of that, so. Well coach, we're we're all
- 29:03close it out with this question here.
- 29:05You're you're sitting in a restaurant right now enjoying
- 29:07some barbecue in the DC area but let's pull it back to
- 29:10Blacksburg. We always ask all the all the
- 29:12coaches and players that we have along what's the go to spot in
- 29:16the bird when you're going out whether it's for beers, food
- 29:20whatever it may be. What's your go to spot?
- 29:23I went when I first came back you know and and the family
- 29:26wasn't with me. I I flipped the coin between
- 29:27Mackadoos and PKS. But I do find myself at BW
- 29:31threes quite a bit because I do think they have the coldest beer
- 29:34on tap. But it's PKS.
- 29:36It's PKS by far it it's if you if I'm we're going to go out or
- 29:40we're going to have a few beers or you know get a few get some
- 29:43dinner and stuff. I'm PK Shout out to Mike Whaley.
- 29:46He's a great dude and we're close friends and have been that
- 29:49way since because we were in college and that.
- 29:52That's my good two spot. Definitely speak case.
- 29:54Has has Cheetah got you on the cheetah wing kick or or how's
- 29:58that? Going Oh yeah.
- 29:59It's so funny is that, you know, I I refuse to get him just
- 30:03because he was bragging on him so much Like I was like probably
- 30:07the last person to try and because I was like, no, I'm not.
- 30:10I wouldn't do that as Spike, you know I was like no, I'm not
- 30:12doing it. I'm not eating those things just
- 30:13because you said they're good and you know and they put them
- 30:15on the me and I didn't even want to boycott them even more.
- 30:20But then I did try it, and that's a staple I it's I don't
- 30:23get hot wings without the the lemon pepper anymore for cheetah
- 30:26wings #1. Yeah, lemon pepper is always the
- 30:29way to go. It is a good thing.
- 30:30As soon as I saw what what was it, I was like, yo, yeah, this
- 30:32is, this is going to be a hit. Yeah, it was good.
- 30:35It was good. I'll give it to him.
- 30:37Well, well, Coach Price, you know, we really appreciate you
- 30:41taking 30 minutes of your day. We know how busy you are, you
- 30:44know up and down the footprint and you know thank you for
- 30:48everything that's been done because I'd go back to 21 Brian
- 30:52and Brian. I think we were you over at the
- 30:54house that day when you made, when when you said what you said
- 30:58after beating UVAI think that went a long ways and I think a
- 31:03lot of people. I think for us, I think, you
- 31:06know, that was the beginning of the climbing out in my opinion.
- 31:12In my opinion. I really do because it because
- 31:15it showed how much this program meant to you.
- 31:18And for us, for people who have been fans 2530 years, the alumni
- 31:22of the school, it showed like when this place gets the right
- 31:27people, it's dangerous. Obviously. 100% in in In my
- 31:32feeling, Brian and Brian's not Far is right.
- 31:35I'm going to rubber stamp that one right, right away, man.
- 31:38It it felt like the the heart of the team had returned.
- 31:43Well, it was totally UN unrehearsed.
- 31:45I had no idea what I was going to say.
- 31:46So it just came out. It was from the heart and that's
- 31:50how I feel. And you know, my daughter and my
- 31:53daughter's a sophomore now at Tech.
- 31:55And that's just, that's an incredible feeling, you know,
- 31:58come full circle. All right, well, coach, you go
- 32:02finish up your meal. We're sure you're probably about
- 32:04to hit some what? What's the name of the
- 32:06conference? Brian?
- 32:07I always forget it. I always screwed up the
- 32:09conference up in DC. Oh, I'm blanking now 'cause you
- 32:12called me out. Mathon.
- 32:14Oh, the WCAC. There we go.
- 32:16You. Go get all those WCCA schools in
- 32:20the next few hours here visiting your D lineman.
- 32:23We appreciate you taking the time this afternoon to spend
- 32:25with us and Go Hokies coach. Well, I appreciate it and and
- 32:29the one we got coming, he wasn't allowed to enroll mid year, but
- 32:34Emmett Laws is going to be a beast.
- 32:37He showed it. He showed it.
- 32:39I'm, I'm excited. I'm excited about that one.
- 32:42I am too all. Right, coach.
- 32:45Appreciate the time. Well, no worry.
- 32:47Appreciate you guys and anytime. Appreciate.
- 32:50Have a good one. OK man.
- 32:56Was fire. Yeah nothing but nothing but the
- 33:05heat from coach Price there man. He really brought it.
- 33:08I really you know you can tell he's speaking from the heart at
- 33:12all time man. Like every everything just seems
- 33:15so authentic when it when it comes out of his mouth and you
- 33:19know he spoke a lot of truth. I mean talking about some of the
- 33:21guys that that are coming in and yeah, I I loved him talking
- 33:24about the the feelings towards you know guys like Copeland and
- 33:28how excited he was that you know he got peoples in the boat.
- 33:31He stayed in the boat and got enroll.
- 33:34I mean, just that whole thing, man, was was really awesome to
- 33:37hear. Well then here right at the end
- 33:39and that was kind of uncompromised.
- 33:40We didn't, we hadn't planned on mentioning the young guys.
- 33:43He's excited about it at LAWS. Yeah, yeah, and and you know.
- 33:47He he brought that up UN unprompted.
- 33:49Unprompted, we we, we. I didn't think about mentioning
- 33:52anything with the young guys coming in, but he brought that
- 33:55unprompted. It tells you a lot right there
- 33:58and he does. He loves the school.
- 34:00Like Robbie said there, we appreciate it.
- 34:03It was AI felt like. I felt like we could have won
- 34:08another 3545 minutes, another hour, honestly, just just
- 34:13talking with him back and forth and and it's funny how he
- 34:16recollected those plays because now I pulled up the game and
- 34:22started hitting and I had to find it and it was very late in
- 34:24the game. It wasn't the last defensive
- 34:27series, it was the next to last. He won't off by much on where it
- 34:31was. He went off by where he actually
- 34:35gave Cornell. I think an extra bunk is
- 34:37actually he he he had the tackle for loss and then they had
- 34:41back-to-back sacks. And and here they are right
- 34:43there. This is 1995 with exactly what
- 34:47Coach Price was talking about. We'll pull that up Real.
- 34:49Quick, what a game. Thank you John Virginia trying
- 34:53to put this one away. They got to get the ball going
- 34:56though, is grow is taken down and again it's JC Price.
- 35:00He's made two big defensive plays in a row.
- 35:05AC just kept pushing, pushing inside.
- 35:07Micro stepped up and got into Price's, Price's arms and he
- 35:11just kept going there and that's a nice job by Price pushing his
- 35:13way through. A reminder there's more football
- 35:16coming up the second-half of our double header.
- 35:17Arkansas, LSU and the SEC. Most of you watching this game,
- 35:21we'll see the Northwestern, Purdue game as those Wildcats
- 35:24are having some kind of year. UCLAUSC, Colorado, Kansas State,
- 35:28Utah, BYU all come up next here on ABC Sports 3rd down and 16
- 35:37grow under Crutcher Goes. Down.
- 35:41Again George Del Rico and Cornell Brown.
- 35:44Look at that dance. Look at that dance.
- 35:46And by the way. It's funny and.
- 35:47It's actually it. It should noted after Cornell
- 35:51makes the stack as he picked him up again.
- 35:53Baron. Yep, Jim Baron.
- 35:55The the individual that was the placement completing the middle
- 36:00of that area is right there. Jim Baron, the football and
- 36:05exactly well, back in the 90s. And it's.
- 36:09It's it's awesome to see that I'm I'm probably am at some
- 36:12point I don't know when I'm probably going to watch that
- 36:14game beginning to end it's it's been it'll be 29 years yeah.
- 36:18You got to look at the the best personal foul ever.
- 36:20You got to find that. We got to find that, well, he
- 36:23said. That was late in the game and I
- 36:24went later in the game and it and it, it took me like 2
- 36:26minutes to find that. So it didn't take me any time.
- 36:28But yeah, and I love Chris Lester here, mentioning about
- 36:33how excited they are about Laws and Thomas, yeah, the whole
- 36:36staff in general, he mentions about that, how personal they
- 36:39are and everything. And they're a tight knit group
- 36:41it sounds like too. So like they enjoy, I think they
- 36:45have a good energy, they complimentary energy.
- 36:47They seem to bring kind of the best out of each other.
- 36:50So that I think we're starting to see them gel as well.
- 36:52Like we saw the players gel on the field, they're starting to
- 36:55gel as a staff a little bit too. So that that's really good to
- 36:58see. All righty.
- 36:59I'm looking up here at the hoops game.
- 37:01Hokies up six under 16 minutes to go and well, here we go.
- 37:09I'm going to put this one up, Brian, because this is where
- 37:11we're going to next. We're going to talk about the
- 37:13early enrollees. And Brian, I'm going to let you
- 37:16answer this question Thomas put up here before we get into those
- 37:19guys, put some, you know you played at the D3 level, but what
- 37:25is the importance for guys to get in early, what you think?
- 37:31I think it's big and because there's going to be two things
- 37:34that you've got to do as you're coming on campus that that's
- 37:37going to be important. You got to, you got to match the
- 37:39speed of the game that step up in competition level and you got
- 37:44to get your body physically ready to play against that
- 37:48level. Competition, getting in there
- 37:50and spring helps you do a lot of the 1st and a little bit of the
- 37:552nd. So by doing that you're going to
- 37:58get that type of head start against anybody else that's
- 38:00enrolling come fall. And that's even with guys that
- 38:04are working out with, you know these, you know, personal
- 38:07trainers that are, that are putting them through a
- 38:09collegiate level workout every day.
- 38:11You know there's only so much that you can do outside of that,
- 38:14especially with having teammates that are at that level pushing
- 38:18you every day. You don't have that, I think,
- 38:20outside of outside of the the workout room with your
- 38:24teammates, so the experience is invaluable in my opinion.
- 38:29Well, I agree with the body thing also.
- 38:31I think it's habitual, right? I think getting there early, you
- 38:35start building your habits of the workouts where I'm going to
- 38:39meals, how classes run, how I'm looking at film, when can I go
- 38:43meet with coaches versus the guys And it's it's not knocking
- 38:46the guys who are getting there later that that's everybody has
- 38:49their own journey. But getting there and building
- 38:51that habit to where when fall camp rolls around, you know
- 38:54exactly what you're going to do, how you're going to do it,
- 38:57you're going to be very programmed to yourself.
- 38:59So all that going is we did have quite a few early enrollees and
- 39:04we want to look real quick here between me and Brian, who we
- 39:07think potential impact players in all phases, who we think are
- 39:11probably guaranteed to be on special teams and who might need
- 39:13a year, who might need to sit down a year and effectively take
- 39:18a red shirt. You know, that's, you know, we
- 39:21could call Chris Coleman out. Chris Coleman would say red
- 39:23shirt, all of them. But we're not in that air
- 39:26anymore, Chris. Always be red shirt.
- 39:28So real quick, if y'all do not know what high schoolers
- 39:33enrolled early, let's start with Keelan Brody Adams.
- 39:36He's already there. Joshua Clark.
- 39:39Did you see what Joshua Clark did the other day?
- 39:41Brian at practice. I did not.
- 39:44What do you do? He's he got part of the 20 mile
- 39:46an hour club. He got clock going 20 miles an
- 39:48hour. All right, so he's rolling up
- 39:49the gate. He's rolling up the gate.
- 39:51He's got that track speed. Track speed and it's 6 to 180
- 39:55already is ADB. He's already has that potential
- 39:57to be built significantly bigger.
- 39:59Hey, let's go and comment here, Jim.
- 40:01Jim's got it right, man. That is very, very, very true.
- 40:06Aw, man, Hit up. Chris's too, man.
- 40:08Chris, we saw him, man. I know he's not at home and he's
- 40:11up in Blacksburg, but, you know, it's a good thing.
- 40:14You know what's It's a good thing.
- 40:15No, it's a good thing, Chris. All right, we got Derek Dandy.
- 40:19The big defensive end out of North Carolina.
- 40:21Andrew Hanchup. The Ohio State.
- 40:25The, excuse me, the Ohio native. The defensive tackle 757 zone.
- 40:30Gerard Johnson. Tyler Mason.
- 40:33Mr. Video game numbers. Running back.
- 40:36Quinn Radish. Safety Quinn Radish, Safety
- 40:39Brand. Spoiler alert.
- 40:43Chance Wiggins and one of our favorite we got to interview and
- 40:48talk with him last spring. Gave Williams so a lot of highly
- 40:52talented guys on there bronze. So I'm going to kick it to you
- 40:56first. Who has the potential?
- 41:00Who has the potential? All phases.
- 41:06I think Quentin Reddish, just because of the position need and
- 41:10him being really under the radar in terms of his skill set and
- 41:13what he's bringing to the table. Good height, good, good, good
- 41:17size coming in, you know, tackling machine, good in
- 41:24coverage. He's a guy that I think is
- 41:27poised to be at least in a rotational position in year one.
- 41:33All righty, because you took him already.
- 41:37I'm going to take someone else. I think with the injury to
- 41:40Steven Gosnell, I think Brody Adams has a chance because of
- 41:44Adams, Chris Sprout running ability already and Brody coming
- 41:47in 6 to 185, he's what, 10 lbs. Probably something he could gain
- 41:53over the next 8 to 10 weeks in this type of program and we
- 41:56already know if it's the competition he played with down
- 41:59the 75. And again, I just think having
- 42:02someone and Brian you talked about it when he when he first
- 42:06committed, he is an elite route runner and when you get guys
- 42:10like that sometimes it's such an easy transition in him getting
- 42:13there early and everything. But my second in would be
- 42:18Quentin Register because of the safety room.
- 42:21So you know it's it's going to be crazy to see which of these
- 42:26guys can are there other guys. I mean, there's a reason why 2
- 42:32running backs left rod. There's a reason.
- 42:36Yeah, that that was that was going to be kind of my, you know
- 42:39you talked about Brody, Brody and Tyler going to be kind of my
- 42:42my two way to be on that list. Brody for the same reasons you
- 42:47mentioned and Tyler just because I think he's going to have some
- 42:51opportunity and I think there's always room for a guy that has
- 42:57that type of production. You at least want to get him out
- 43:00there see what he can do against the step up in competition.
- 43:05You know we talk about, you know it's it's Mount Airy the the the
- 43:09competition level was a little bit lower but I mean you you
- 43:13can't fake those type of numbers.
- 43:16No, you can't. I mean. 6000 yards in his career
- 43:20in high school 13.1 a Carrie. My man's averaging a a a first
- 43:29down and change a Carrie. This is not a joke.
- 43:35So but there is a reason. There is a reason now that he he
- 43:39comes in and guys leave. And it's no disrespect to Chance
- 43:43Black or Bryce Duke, but there's something special about this.
- 43:46All right, let's flip it, Brian. Let's talk about special teamers
- 43:51who definitely. First of all, we got a couple
- 43:56guys hidden here. We'll hit Coach Compton up
- 43:59talking about Tyler Mason. Different, different.
- 44:05But let's talk about who's definitely on the field, special
- 44:07teams, while I was one way or the other.
- 44:10Yeah, that that's that's that's a harder pick just because do
- 44:13you want to waste a a year of a guy's eligibility primarily
- 44:17running special teams in most cases no.
- 44:21In in most cases I'm I'm with Chris.
- 44:25We got to be red shirted in those cases.
- 44:29You know, looking looking at this list, if I had to, if I had
- 44:33to pick anybody, yeah, I could see a Joshua Clark with that
- 44:42speed getting on the field in some way that could be a
- 44:45contributing factor in special teams.
- 44:48OK. That would, that would probably
- 44:50be my top pick if we were going to do anything there.
- 44:52Well, that type of speed, I mean, you think gunner, you
- 44:54think things like that. I'm going to give you my I got
- 44:59A1A1B. My 1A is Derek Dandy.
- 45:03I think just a guy that size I I immediate size in his some of
- 45:07his athleticism immediately. Kick returns, probably doing
- 45:11stuff on a punt block unit just because of his size and getting
- 45:14him on the field, getting engaged with bigger bodies,
- 45:16being on the defensive line. My second and this is going to
- 45:21be what happens this spring and it's going to be a close story
- 45:25to watch. We already talked about it with
- 45:26Quinn. Reddish right.
- 45:28Safety position. If Keonta Jenkins start spending
- 45:33time in the safety room, Caleb Woodson's going to take over
- 45:37starting role. He showed he probably could do
- 45:39it, but then that gives Gabe Williams a chance to not only
- 45:43get valuable reps at linebacker where he is going to play and
- 45:48with his Frank, most likely if he does what we think it's going
- 45:51to happen, he's going to be at will, but getting on the field
- 45:54doesn't hurt. But again, Gabe's linked
- 45:56athleticism, putt block unit, kick, return units, things like
- 46:00that. That's where I lean with those
- 46:03guys and sort of say you know you sick guys who are 6, four
- 46:08long arms. Those are the guys that somehow
- 46:11sneak through and get their hand up and the next thing you know,
- 46:14a kick gets blocked one way or the other.
- 46:16And I can I can see Gabe having a Kelly Lawson level of gains
- 46:22between this spring and next spring where where he's going
- 46:27from you know right at 200 lbs to kind of that 2/22/15, 2:20
- 46:34range where where wheels on the table in terms of his position
- 46:40slot in there. So look look for that.
- 46:43But I I'm kind of with you that that would probably be my B if
- 46:48if if we were to get somebody on the field consistently it would
- 46:51be it would be Gabe getting him up to speed and things like
- 46:55that. So but yeah if we're talking
- 46:58just special teams it's going to be Joshua Clark.
- 47:00I feel like he could probably impact the most.
- 47:03All righty. Well, now let's flip to this
- 47:05because we've talked about guys we think we should see out there
- 47:09this year. Anybody particular, not
- 47:12necessarily because they can't play, but just like you
- 47:16mentioned with you know with Gabe and a couple other these
- 47:19guys, do we just want to get that red shirt on them because
- 47:23where they fit and how the ability that they have right now
- 47:27and where it's going to be in a couple years, Yeah, it's going
- 47:31to be better. You know I think with all the
- 47:35guys coming out and all the guys that come in and some of the
- 47:38youth that we already have that we need to get some reps that's
- 47:42getting into that red shirt sophomore range of their time in
- 47:46Blacksburg. I think I think hand shucks
- 47:50probably definitely going to going to be one of those guys
- 47:53that's that's taking the red shirt this year.
- 47:55Because we do have guys like you know that that coach Price was
- 48:00mentioning earlier that had some Knicks this past year that are
- 48:04younger and that's the reason you bring in so many guys in the
- 48:06portal. But you still have those guys
- 48:08waiting in the wings that we want to get some reps this year.
- 48:11So I feel like if if there's extra reps outside of that first
- 48:15that core four that we have, you know I think it's going to go to
- 48:19those guys. I think some of those younger D
- 48:21tackles are going to take that red shirt and maybe really
- 48:23across the defensive line if we look at it from that.
- 48:26Perspective I real quick going to answer a thing here from
- 48:30Thomas. No offensive lineman enrolled
- 48:34early. I don't think any of them had
- 48:37planned on it either. So again, everybody has their
- 48:41own path of how they get here. You know you want guys to get in
- 48:44early, but sometimes if it doesn't work out, it doesn't
- 48:46work out. I'm going to give you the name I
- 48:49think is definitely going to be a red shirt this year and that's
- 48:52going to be Gerard Johnson. And it's not so much that make
- 48:54that I don't think he can play. I think it's figuring out what
- 48:58his body's going to do over the next 365 days.
- 49:02Does does Gerard get here? Does he gain a lot of mass where
- 49:05he's going to play a three tech at like 285 to 90 or does he
- 49:10lean out and he's playing 64260 playing in, you know, is he
- 49:16going? To be a big in or is he going to
- 49:17be a undersized detector? Exactly.
- 49:21And and again, that was something, if you go back, you
- 49:23know, just over a month ago now that Coach Prowl was mentioning,
- 49:27he was mentioning like we've got to figure out what Girard you're
- 49:30going to turn into because you don't know what's going to
- 49:33happen. He's already 64250 or 2:45.
- 49:37He comes in, he puts on and gets a lean muscle and he's 265.
- 49:42You're going to stick him and in because you know that because of
- 49:45that height. And you did see he does have a
- 49:48little bend. Even being a bigger kid in high
- 49:50school, he has a little bend which usually guys to me you
- 49:54don't see that usually guys who are bigger playing and they
- 49:57literally just pushed the tackle back, right.
- 49:59They bull rush every time. You saw Gerard lean a little bit
- 50:03being a bigger kid. So that's the guy.
- 50:05I think they, I think it's more of them having to figure out
- 50:08what his body's going to do on the weight program, on the
- 50:11nutrition program. Yeah, 'cause he's he's got a
- 50:14body that like right now, you know that that's a that's a
- 50:18prototypical DN body and he hasn't even hit a a collegiate
- 50:23weight rear on the collegiate nutrition program or any of that
- 50:27stuff. So it'll be interesting to see
- 50:29if if they, if they decide they want to try to get him to, to
- 50:33put on some weight. And if they do, you know how how
- 50:35well that takes and you know where he ends up sliding in.
- 50:39But I definitely agree with you. I think that that's probably one
- 50:42that you could see red shirting for that very reason.
- 50:45No knock on his game or more so on.
- 50:47Where is he going to fit in And as as we're working that in you
- 50:52know let let's let's figure out what that position is.
- 50:54So we he's not having to strain too much from you know learning
- 51:00one position then have to slide to another position and things
- 51:03like that. Let's let's get him in there and
- 51:06and get him acclimated and can get him in in that that weight
- 51:09room and that nutrition program and see where the chips fall.
- 51:12100%, I'm going to throw some up here.
- 51:13Brian, we were talking about and this is our coach buddy Robbie
- 51:16Compton who has put quite a few kids in college and where he
- 51:19coached. And just, you know, a lot of the
- 51:21kids that went early said the best part was getting the swing
- 51:23of college classes, football workouts and not the immediate
- 51:27pressure of in season games. Because think about guys who get
- 51:30there in August, it's immediate, like, hey listen, in a month
- 51:32it's going to be 66,000 people out there screaming.
- 51:36Are you ready for that? Along with going to class along
- 51:39with, you know, meetings and all this stuff, it's a great point
- 51:43that Robbie makes there. All righty.
- 51:46So there's our early enrollees. Obviously it's going to be great
- 51:52over the next three months. Ryan following it, you know
- 51:57between listening to Andy, David Cunningham, other people inside
- 52:02the program talking to a couple players about how this breaks
- 52:05down Now before we get into the back half where we're looking at
- 52:09what would be Virginia Tech's perfect schedule for 2024, we
- 52:13are going to take a quick pause for our digital partners and
- 52:16Main Street Pharmacy. I can probably save you a lot of
- 52:20money and I can take a lot better care of you.
- 52:22That's pretty much it. My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm
- 52:25a pharmacist. I own and operate Main Street
- 52:27Pharmacy here in downtown Blacksburg.
- 52:29My brother's a pharmacist. I'm a pharmacist.
- 52:31My uncle's a pharmacist. My dad's a pharmacist.
- 52:33I remember he would give me M and Ms. to count in little pill
- 52:36counters. This is just something I've
- 52:37always done and I'm just lucky that what I know so well is
- 52:41something that I can do and feel good about it and get back to
- 52:44people. Pharmacies are your frontline
- 52:46defense. Pharmacy's job is to make sure
- 52:48you're getting optimal care for the lowest price possible.
- 52:51Also, we take the pressure off of emergency rooms.
- 52:54I'll tell people immediately when they need to go to the
- 52:56doctor, or I'll tell them if they just need a cream over the
- 52:58counter. If there's something that isn't
- 53:00commercially available, if it's something that's not available
- 53:03in a certain strength or a certain form or anything like
- 53:06that, we'll make it tailor made medications.
- 53:08Some of those options save people a lot of money.
- 53:10What motivates me? I get to take care of people on
- 53:12the limit. Blacksburg.
- 53:13That's all neat. As we take a quick break, we'd
- 53:18like to tell you about getting your free website report from
- 53:21our digital partner, Grassroots Digital Marketing Studio.
- 53:24Let's tell you how your website ranks on Google onsite, SEO and
- 53:27social media. No commitment to buy anything.
- 53:29You can get your free report by visiting
- 53:31grassrootsdigitalstudio.com/freewebsite Report.
- 53:37Now back to the episode. All righty and we are back.
- 53:41All right, Brian, before we bring up the spreadsheet here
- 53:45and go through our perfect schedule, I want to talk about
- 53:50the coaching stuff that happened.
- 53:51Obviously, last time we were here was the day Nick Saban
- 53:54retired, and since that boring time, Alabama made quick of it.
- 53:59It seemed like that they may have known about a month
- 54:02beforehand that Saban was going to retire.
- 54:06And that's all fine and dandy by the way.
- 54:07Hokies up 8 under 10 against BC, but they hire Caitlin De Boer.
- 54:14Caitlin de Boer, who just took Washington to the national title
- 54:18game, had a great season the season before.
- 54:22Had good seasons at Fresno State, won NAI.
- 54:26The guy's never lost wherever he's coached, but obviously
- 54:31there's been some residual effects of him coming because
- 54:34there's guys getting in the portal leaving guy saying the
- 54:37only reason I came here is because I wanted to play for
- 54:39Saban. What do you think about a the
- 54:43higher but then the fallout? You know, I think that I'm with
- 54:48you on the This was done beforehand.
- 54:51That's a quick turn around for a like you didn't hear anything
- 54:56about a search committee or any of that shit.
- 54:58Like it went from Saban stepping down and like four or five days
- 55:02later I we got our guy. You usually don't see that quick
- 55:06of a turn around for that level of program, right?
- 55:09So usually it's a little bit more of a process finding that
- 55:13replacement to, let's be honest, like a legend, arguably maybe
- 55:18the greatest college football coach of all time.
- 55:22You know, you can debate that if you want to, but he's certainly
- 55:25into the discussion. And then you got Caitlin De
- 55:29Boer, who like you said is 1 Everywhere he's been, has had
- 55:33great success everywhere he's been.
- 55:37That's a that's a big hire. I expected it it it wasn't as
- 55:43Alabama of a higher as I expected.
- 55:46So I'll say that it was definitely a little bit of of
- 55:50left field. It's a guy that you know hasn't
- 55:53really, you know, Alabama's a national program.
- 55:55They recruit everywhere, right? But they still primarily recruit
- 56:00in that six or seven hour window of their school, mainly because
- 56:03that's where all the fucking talent is, right?
- 56:06Georgia, Florida. There drops from Texas.
- 56:09That's where the fucking talent is, right?
- 56:11So, so it it helps that that that's where you recruit.
- 56:14So not having a ton of experience recruiting in that
- 56:18area would be the thing that would give me hesitancy is if if
- 56:23I was an Alabama fan. But otherwise it checks all the
- 56:26damn boxes. It does check all the damn boxes
- 56:28in and I think it was, I mean the guy's a winner.
- 56:33And I think also you get a feeling it was savings
- 56:38handpicked you. You have a feeling you have a
- 56:41feeling saving wasn't going to let anybody just walk in there.
- 56:43He's still going to be part of the program.
- 56:45You know, like most the head coaches who retire and I know
- 56:48everybody says you don't want to be the guy after the guy and
- 56:52we'll see how that takes place. He's already had for example
- 56:57that's the the the left tackle guy is the one.
- 56:59I don't completely understand because the online coach coming
- 57:03literally just coached the Joe Moore award-winning off the
- 57:07offensive line. He's going to Iowa.
- 57:10Well here's the thing about Iowa.
- 57:12That is not a good offense. I don't get that.
- 57:16I don't get that. So but we'll see how it all pans
- 57:19out. You know, there's obviously
- 57:20residual move Jet Fish, who led Arizona to a great season down
- 57:25at, you know, down out of Arizona.
- 57:29He takes the UW job. Not a shock there.
- 57:32He turned Arizona around unbelievably.
- 57:35I don't think anybody saw that happening.
- 57:37Yeah, nobody saw them. Like, I think people saw them
- 57:40getting kind of steadied out, levelled out.
- 57:44I don't think they saw them taking the big steps that they
- 57:46took this year. And win 910 games like they did
- 57:49this year. And then obviously, the last
- 57:51piece was Brent Brennan, who'd been at San Jose State, who had
- 57:55some success there. He takes over Arizona.
- 57:57So and I'm sure there's somebody with Sarah, San Jose State, but
- 58:00I'm looking at just the Power Five schools in this case.
- 58:04All righty, Brian, let's move on and let's do it here.
- 58:09Let's talk about the perfect schedule.
- 58:12Get that up. Now obviously, yes, we have been
- 58:16discussing this and we've been putting our stuff in and yes,
- 58:19some things like we will get to those because it's a hot topic.
- 58:23We're still going to tell you exactly what we think a perfect
- 58:27ACC schedule will look like, even though we know where two of
- 58:32those outside of the UVA game, which is always slated in the
- 58:35end of November, are going to fall here.
- 58:37So we're we're looking primarily at week five through week 12
- 58:40here. We know week 13 is going to be
- 58:43after Thanksgiving. We're going to beat the shit out
- 58:47of the Cavaliers again, so we know that's happening.
- 58:50We're looking at everything else after the non conference games.
- 58:54All righty. Well Brian, we just come off a
- 58:56game at Rutgers. Non con is done.
- 59:00Where's the first ACC match up for you?
- 59:04Well, I think we're going to take a little trip down to
- 59:07Durham and we're going to face the Blue Devils.
- 59:13I think this is a good kind of test but also a a decent warm up
- 59:18for the ACC schedule because I feel like Duke is probably going
- 59:21to take at least a small step back relative to where they've
- 59:25been the last couple years. But I think there's it's still
- 59:28going to be a solid solid opponent.
- 59:30Obviously you're playing at their place.
- 59:31So I think you know you factor in those two things it's a it's
- 59:35a good little good little combo there but I I I think it's a
- 59:38good way to kind of ease into the ACC schedule.
- 59:41It's not. It's not the the weakest team in
- 59:43the in the conference, but you're also not getting a
- 59:46heavyweight out the gate. No, not at all.
- 59:48And and believe it or not I'm I'm right with Brian on this one
- 59:51with having Duke. It's Lane Stadium S let's go
- 59:55ahead and mark that there's going to be about it's going to
- 59:57be about 7030. The Hokies to Blue Devils fans
- 1:00:02whenever we play them. I don't care when it is but I
- 1:00:05think it's to your point they're they're an OK team.
- 1:00:08They're going to give you a challenge.
- 1:00:09It's also. Having a road game early with
- 1:00:13not a heavy travel and we'll get into that in a little while here
- 1:00:17without a heavy travel. But getting into that routine
- 1:00:21and other people like, well, we've already have been to ODU
- 1:00:23at that point, would have been to Nashville, the opening game.
- 1:00:26Don't ever count opening games just because it's so much prep
- 1:00:29work going into those. It's so much prep work and it
- 1:00:32like even that schedule is usually funkier than your
- 1:00:35average road trip schedule is going to be.
- 1:00:37Exactly. So with this you, like you said,
- 1:00:39you kind of land out of the gate and you get a pro crowd.
- 1:00:43It's not a long drive and again, it gives you a little bit of a
- 1:00:48challenge. Tally and Shelton were good
- 1:00:50enough. Even though they aren't here
- 1:00:51tonight, they pop theirs. And believe it or not, week
- 1:00:54five, we were across the board. Like, let's just go to Duke Week
- 1:00:585 and get this out of the way, All right?
- 1:01:01So Week 6. Brian Yeah, I went a little
- 1:01:05sideways with this one. I'm going to go ahead and put
- 1:01:08Georgia Tech on there. OK.
- 1:01:11I think it's kind of a a similar situation.
- 1:01:15It it's a little bit of a mid tier, probably a little bit
- 1:01:20lower on the mid tier than Duke, but still a team that's going to
- 1:01:25give you a challenge, a team that does some things a little
- 1:01:28differently than what Duke will do them.
- 1:01:30So you get a different look there as well.
- 1:01:33So I think that's a good way to kind of ease into the Meteor
- 1:01:35part of the schedule. All right for me.
- 1:01:38Get the big road trip out of the way.
- 1:01:40Get on the plane a lot of Palo Alto play at the Farm.
- 1:01:45Get that one done in early early October.
- 1:01:49This would be like the October 5th game, effectively Stanford
- 1:01:54not coming off a good season obviously in a big rebuild right
- 1:01:57now. Get it out of the way early
- 1:02:00where they maybe haven't found anything yet.
- 1:02:03Also, this game cams right up against the Notre Dame game.
- 1:02:07Probably could potentially overlook the Hokies, but my
- 1:02:11bigger one here is just I don't want to be flying to Stanford in
- 1:02:17the middle of November or even early November.
- 1:02:20I don't want to late game that late just because of the the
- 1:02:24travel and you know how much you know that can do.
- 1:02:29So let's go to Stanford Week 12. By the way, this one still both
- 1:02:34of these games are still on the table.
- 1:02:36This could happen. I hope they will.
- 1:02:38All right, Tally and Sheldon. What they got here.
- 1:02:41Tally followed me. Sheldon.
- 1:02:44Went a little sideways there with Miami.
- 1:02:46We'll, we'll, we'll trip down to Miami.
- 1:02:48Well, well, I think I look at Sheldon.
- 1:02:50I think Shelton's basically saying playing OK team and then
- 1:02:52play a team that's going to be perceived to have a better
- 1:02:55season, like go and get that test and then have a big road
- 1:02:58trip the next week. I wish they were here to discuss
- 1:03:01their things a little bit more, but they got things going on.
- 1:03:03But there you go, we got 2, agrees.
- 1:03:06And then one home game and one good and win one other away
- 1:03:10game. All right, Week 7.
- 1:03:14All right, Week 7, now we going to Palo Alto.
- 1:03:18Now we're going to Palo Alto still early October.
- 1:03:20We we got, we got our two like mid tier warmups.
- 1:03:24Let's take it out there. Let's beat up on a team that
- 1:03:27should be still at a rebuild, still early enough where you're
- 1:03:31probably getting them not quite fully settled.
- 1:03:34And you know, I think, you know, early to mid-october, I'm Palo
- 1:03:39Alto. That's probably not a bad place
- 1:03:41for a road trip if you're going to take that one big trip as a
- 1:03:43Hokie fan every year, so. I'll I'll the Santa that that
- 1:03:48area yeah, mid-october is probably 60s.
- 1:03:52You know, if you're a wine drinker, go out to Napa.
- 1:03:55Maybe the Niners are playing the, you know, the Sunday game
- 1:03:58and I could, you know, Max out a credit card and sleep on the
- 1:04:02couch for about 6 months. I.
- 1:04:06That sounds fun. You.
- 1:04:07Know maybe. All righty, but for me with this
- 1:04:10one, we're six games in open bye week.
- 1:04:17Take a bye. For a bye week, we need to buy.
- 1:04:19Take a break. Need to be take a break.
- 1:04:22You just come off of going 6 and O you got some meaty, meaty on
- 1:04:28the back end, some good teams, so could be the bye week this
- 1:04:32week. All right, all right.
- 1:04:35I feel that. But Tally had Georgia Tech
- 1:04:38coming in right there. Tally like layering it up like
- 1:04:42play OK, play bad, play another OK team.
- 1:04:45Yeah, and he's got, he got the two Rd. trips he had to get,
- 1:04:48throw a home one in there. Got a home game in there?
- 1:04:51I ain't home yet. Oh, look at you and Sheldon the
- 1:04:54grin. You know what?
- 1:04:59Great minds, man. Great minds.
- 1:05:00Great minds. Great minds.
- 1:05:01All righty, Week 8. What say you say glow?
- 1:05:06We taking a break in week 8, taking a break in week 8.
- 1:05:09All right, seven games ideally. Ideally we would be taking a
- 1:05:14break in week 8 ideally. That, that still might be a
- 1:05:18potential, right? Oh, no, no.
- 1:05:21Yeah. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:05:22Boston College. Yeah.
- 1:05:23OK. So Yep, it's mid-october.
- 1:05:29Two teams likely with really good records sitting there.
- 1:05:33It's literally would be October 19th if this would have
- 1:05:36happened. I mean that that would be one of
- 1:05:42those games, right? One of those games, you go down
- 1:05:45for one of those games, maybe game day shows up for Clemson.
- 1:05:50And I think at this point in the season, I think the confidence
- 1:05:53is built. I think they're not the Clemson
- 1:05:56of what they were 6-7 years ago. They're still really good
- 1:06:00defensively. They still have got some game
- 1:06:02Breakers on offense. It still would be a challenge in
- 1:06:05that game. Clemson, Clemson.
- 1:06:06This pad, like the past year, probably what they're looking at
- 1:06:09next year is about where they were in like 2011, right?
- 1:06:12So yeah, good. A really good, a really good
- 1:06:15team. Some flaws.
- 1:06:18Some flaws, Well, the biggest flaws?
- 1:06:20The person wearing the headset? All righty, where's Tally and
- 1:06:25Sheldon on Week 8? Tally's with me.
- 1:06:28We got a bye week, baby. Bye week and show all y'all.
- 1:06:32Look at all y'all. Well, guess what?
- 1:06:34I still might be right about the bye week.
- 1:06:35Y'all wrong. You're probably are right about
- 1:06:38the bye week. If we're If we're looking at
- 1:06:41that Thursday night game 100. Percent 100%.
- 1:06:45So week nine, I'm I'm going Clemson because you got to get
- 1:06:48Clemson coming off the bye. I feel like that's the best
- 1:06:50place for him. If we were building this
- 1:06:52schedule just for the Hokies, which is what we're doing here.
- 1:06:55I want Clemson off a by. I want the opponent that I have
- 1:06:59to prepare for the most that I've got at home.
- 1:07:02Let's go ahead and take care of business coming off the by.
- 1:07:05100%. And honestly, I want that on a
- 1:07:07Thursday night. Yeah, you want that on a
- 1:07:10Thursday? OK, makes sense.
- 1:07:13But you know that that is where you say it's perfect because you
- 1:07:16know the power brokers at ESPN are not going to let Clemson,
- 1:07:19Virginia Tech, go to a Thursday night game.
- 1:07:22That thing. I know they're not, but that's
- 1:07:23where I want it. That's where.
- 1:07:25You want it? All right, let's get to me.
- 1:07:28All right. You just came off Clemson.
- 1:07:30I don't want someone that could possibly be overlooked.
- 1:07:33I think Haynes King and what Georgia Tech did last year, you
- 1:07:38would not take them lightly. Like, you know, hey, this guy
- 1:07:41had a lot of touchdowns last year.
- 1:07:42They can score. Look how they played Georgia.
- 1:07:45They hung with them defensively for a while.
- 1:07:47I want to. Coming off a Clemson game, you
- 1:07:49don't want someone you can overlook whether you win or lose
- 1:07:53that game. Yeah, at worst, they're going to
- 1:07:54be a tough out, you know. You know what you're getting?
- 1:07:56As soon as you wake up Sunday morning, you know, hey listen,
- 1:07:58we got to lock in. They have some playmakers, they
- 1:08:01they can win this game. But back-to-back home games
- 1:08:03after back-to-back Rd. trips for me as well.
- 1:08:06All right, good deal. All right, Tally, Tally's with
- 1:08:10me on Clemson coming off that, and so is Shell.
- 1:08:14No, no, no release. Keeping it consistent.
- 1:08:17Everybody here wants to play Clemson off that by.
- 1:08:19Off the bow Week, it is an absolute.
- 1:08:23It's a must. It's a must.
- 1:08:25All right, Week 10. I've got Syracuse.
- 1:08:30We got a We got a big win after Clemson.
- 1:08:32Hopefully we're taking it. You're not going to overlook
- 1:08:35Syracuse in the Artist Formerly known as the Carrier Dome.
- 1:08:40It's still the Carrier Dome. They can rename it all they
- 1:08:42want. It's still a fun.
- 1:08:45Game JMA Wireless now. Nobody.
- 1:08:47That is what Ajma Wireless. Yeah, so yeah.
- 1:08:51I mean, it's still Heinz Field too, so don't don't get it
- 1:08:53twisted. And see, I'm with you on this.
- 1:08:56But this one, I know you did it right after Clemson and I'm
- 1:09:00doing it after Georgia Tech here.
- 1:09:01Go ahead and throw that up. There.
- 1:09:02Put that ugly oranges. This was the toughest 1 and I
- 1:09:07always do like it. Literally, I was like, we'll do
- 1:09:09it here. I don't like it.
- 1:09:10Well, maybe do it. I don't like it early.
- 1:09:14It's that you can't put a trip to the Carrier Dome anywhere and
- 1:09:17feel good about it. You can, you can.
- 1:09:19The only way I put it in, it's like you, you you, you put it
- 1:09:23after two hard games, whether you again you win or lose those
- 1:09:27games. And again, I think having guys
- 1:09:30who played here and played in that environment 20-30 years
- 1:09:34ago, listen, yeah, they might not be a good team, but that
- 1:09:38place is weird. Weird shit happens up there, so
- 1:09:41don't forget it. All right, I heard they're
- 1:09:44renovating it and they might not have the visitor locker room in
- 1:09:46the top of the stands anymore. Well.
- 1:09:49Let's hope they fix that. Let's hope they fix it.
- 1:09:52All righty. Tally says sexy.
- 1:09:58We got a We got a Boston College in there.
- 1:10:00OK, well, I mean Shelton basic. Well, look at Shelton.
- 1:10:04He went Rd. Rd.
- 1:10:05Rd. Yep.
- 1:10:06So y'all just got to you only have one more Rd. game to do
- 1:10:09here, so we got to figure it out, yeah?
- 1:10:11He went Rd. Rd.
- 1:10:12Rd. Then we got home Home.
- 1:10:14So. Yeah, all righty.
- 1:10:16Where are you? Week 11, right?
- 1:10:18And now we're eliminating. It's like there's only a few
- 1:10:20teams left. Y'all can figure out what these
- 1:10:21last few are. Boston College.
- 1:10:24Yeah, and we're. We're going, we're going to kick
- 1:10:26some eagle ass at Lane Stadium in Week 11 week. 11 It's going
- 1:10:30to be the early part of November.
- 1:10:31I'm with you. I won't BC here.
- 1:10:36No apparent reason. I think it's more or less
- 1:10:38because we had to put Syracuse somewhere because I almost put
- 1:10:41BC after GT. But then it's like no, I don't
- 1:10:44want like 3. I don't want like a really good
- 1:10:46team and then two OK teams with you know very good, like solid
- 1:10:52good to good quarterbacks and then go to Syracuse.
- 1:10:56So yeah, I'm with BC here about tally, tally, tally at BCBC.
- 1:11:02And I mean really, you know, Sheldon, just switch BC and
- 1:11:05Syracuse here. Yeah, that's it.
- 1:11:07All right. Week. 12 By process of
- 1:11:10elimination, you know I got. Miami.
- 1:11:14Miami. Yep, All right.
- 1:11:16I'm Miami. Tally's Miami.
- 1:11:19Pop Sheldon finally gets Georgia Tech in there.
- 1:11:23Georgia Tech, Well, that would make it a home and home finish,
- 1:11:26so that would be an upside to taking Georgia Tech there.
- 1:11:30I just want Miami later in the year.
- 1:11:33I want my and there's a reason I want Miami later in the year.
- 1:11:37Usually by this point, Miami has shown all their flaws and you
- 1:11:40can figure out a way to get under their skin and they will
- 1:11:42do something stupid and you will beat them early in the season.
- 1:11:46Sometimes they're still locked in, by the way.
- 1:11:49Leads down to two. Don't talk about it, man.
- 1:11:55Just woo side, it's right here. Woo side.
- 1:11:58All righty. So there is sort of our perfect
- 1:12:03schedule which you know has effectively as of today we can't
- 1:12:11have the perfect schedules. Anymore Anybody listed out there
- 1:12:14who got the best perfect schedule here?
- 1:12:16Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Put in the comments, put in the
- 1:12:19chat. Throw a comment out there.
- 1:12:20Tell me who got the first the best perfect schedule here.
- 1:12:22Schedule. Do y'all like best.
- 1:12:25Just remember, Duke's Duke, Stanford, Syracuse and Miami are
- 1:12:30away. All right, so I know we didn't
- 1:12:34get it. I should have sent you the
- 1:12:36graphic that they pulled out today.
- 1:12:38But obviously, if you haven't been paying attention, some of
- 1:12:42the prime time week Gay games, especially the Thursday and
- 1:12:45Friday nights games that ACC teams will be involved in, were
- 1:12:50announced. And the first one is week five.
- 1:12:53We have to go to Miami, all right.
- 1:12:59If we don't have them late, I want them first.
- 1:13:01So that's the only upside that I get here.
- 1:13:05But, but here's what I don't like.
- 1:13:07A it's going to be a short week. B, we are playing physical ass
- 1:13:12Rutgers. Y'all, everybody who that knows
- 1:13:15Greg Schiano that has watched him, that is going to be a
- 1:13:17physical football game. It was a physical football game
- 1:13:19in Piscataway last year. It was.
- 1:13:22It's a lot of hard hitting. So we are going to say that
- 1:13:26we're going to play that game. We're going to have a short
- 1:13:28week. It's a Miami travel day, so you
- 1:13:31know it takes a significantly longer time.
- 1:13:34That's about a seven or eight hour flight down there, give or
- 1:13:38take. So basically it really screws up
- 1:13:43prepping for that game. That's why I do not like that
- 1:13:47there at all. I get it.
- 1:13:53I get it. But you know if, if, if, I've
- 1:13:58got to not have them at the end sometime in November, either
- 1:14:02kind of that week 11, week 12 range, I want them early.
- 1:14:06I want them. I want to make a statement that
- 1:14:09we beat Miami now ACC, put the ACC on notice a little bit.
- 1:14:15Now that would be the big piece. If you go down there and you
- 1:14:18stomp them, it's a it's a statement across the college
- 1:14:22football landscape, right? Right.
- 1:14:26Of course you go. Because Robbie said yours.
- 1:14:29He likes the later, he likes the later season one.
- 1:14:33So on that throw that other one up there, I want, I just want to
- 1:14:36address it, the one right below that.
- 1:14:39Brian, you got your finger on the button.
- 1:14:41First of all, the incoming QB portal transfers give us about
- 1:14:47four months because you've got to see how things go through
- 1:14:51spring. There have been times where a
- 1:14:52portal quarterback comes and he's going to be the starter and
- 1:14:54the next thing you know they're benched and they're leaving.
- 1:14:58It's so early in that process and obviously, Brian, we will be
- 1:15:02taking looks at whoever we play throughout the year.
- 1:15:07You know, every week we know the enemy.
- 1:15:08We discuss all the players and potentially what they're doing.
- 1:15:13Yeah, I mean, I think you got to look at, you know some, some of
- 1:15:15those guys especially. I think Haynes King is going to
- 1:15:17be the guy that you keep an eye on.
- 1:15:18I feel like he's going second year though.
- 1:15:21I guess you still consider Portal though, right?
- 1:15:23Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's going to be
- 1:15:31interesting because we, because they weren't on our schedule
- 1:15:33this year. So I still consider him a first
- 1:15:35time and he's going to be the de facto starter there.
- 1:15:38So you you consider him, it's going to be interesting to see
- 1:15:42what what some of those other incoming guys will do this year,
- 1:15:47but not not not playing Georgia Tech last year really for the
- 1:15:51first time in a very long time. You know, we we didn't get to
- 1:15:54see what King looked like up close and personal.
- 1:15:57Yeah. And then I mean you've got like,
- 1:15:58you know, you think about down in Miami, you've got like a Cam
- 1:16:00Ward, You fully expect him to win that job and things like
- 1:16:05that. But again, I want to, I want to
- 1:16:07hear stories out of spring practice.
- 1:16:08I want to see spring games, I want to see highlights, I want
- 1:16:11to see how they're gelling before we get into that.
- 1:16:13All right, Brian, let's go to the second game that we
- 1:16:16absolutely are guaranteed to know and that is going to be
- 1:16:19October 17th BC on a Thursday night.
- 1:16:27I love a Thursday night. I don't like that it's BC Yep,
- 1:16:32There's a couple reasons. Number one, I think we're going
- 1:16:34to beat B CS Ass anyway, But #2 is that the times we didn't.
- 1:16:39I feel like it was always like a Thursday night game.
- 1:16:42And that's the way it always felt it did.
- 1:16:45It always felt like, I mean don't don't talk about if you
- 1:16:49ever walk into Main Street pharmacy, do not mention 2007 to
- 1:16:53Jeremy. He will probably immediately
- 1:16:55kick you out of the pharmacy and not allowed back in but it it
- 1:17:01almost sets up and. Then he will burn a effigy of
- 1:17:04Matt Ryan. Yes, he will, and that's OK.
- 1:17:06That's perfectly fine. But seeing where that game is on
- 1:17:09the 17th, it basically is saying the week before, basically week
- 1:17:15seven will be the bad week. So Curtis got one right?
- 1:17:19I got one right. More than likely.
- 1:17:20Right. More than likely.
- 1:17:21I hope I get the Stanford one right because I think we all
- 1:17:26kind of looked and said, listen, we travel across country, you
- 1:17:29want that bad week to come afterwards regardless.
- 1:17:32So Curtis is saying go ahead and get them long trips out of the
- 1:17:35way 1st and then get you by and then figure the rest of it out.
- 1:17:39And then come play BC and then hopefully after BC Who do we
- 1:17:42hope so next week? Clemson.
- 1:17:45Clemson. And that would be, let's see,
- 1:17:4826. So we were, y'all are actually
- 1:17:51right on top of it with that. So it'll be interesting.
- 1:17:56The full schedule comes out tomorrow, I think it's 5:30 on
- 1:18:02ACC Network. Obviously we'll be back in a
- 1:18:04couple weeks and we'll, we're going to obviously break that
- 1:18:07thing down. I'm sure we'll.
- 1:18:08Be and more than likely have a full boat.
- 1:18:13Hopefully I want my boys back. I want everybody in here,
- 1:18:18Hokies, up five with under three to the go.
- 1:18:22One of the white kids with the headband just took a jump shot.
- 1:18:26He's not the one that looks like he plays at the Y.
- 1:18:28He actually looks physically. Like you said, half their team
- 1:18:30look like they play at the Yi. Didn't say that I was, so I was
- 1:18:34elsewhere. Definitely looks like he plays
- 1:18:37at the Y12, doesn't because 12's like 6845, looks like he's like
- 1:18:436-2. So, yeah, all right, Anything
- 1:18:46breaking here, Brian, as we finish this program and as we
- 1:18:50finish this game? I think we're good, man.
- 1:18:54All righty. Well, that does wrap up this
