- 0:00Speaker 1: Right now, it's Football at four.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Andrew to check O from the inside of the Birds
- 0:04Speaker 2: podcast set to join us with the matchups. He's looking
- 0:07Speaker 2: at here for Eagles at Niners. We talked a lot
- 0:10Speaker 2: about it obviously once we knew the matchup was here,
- 0:13Speaker 2: and we're going to dive into it a little deeper.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Andrew to Checko on the matchups. He is looking at here.
- 0:19Speaker 2: It's our first Football at four with Andrew to Checko
- 0:22Speaker 2: for twenty twenty six, so we bring him into the
- 0:25Speaker 2: sports Bash Football at four. Welcome back, Andrew. Happy new year,
- 0:28Speaker 2: my friend. How are you, Mike.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I'm doing great. Happy New Year to you and all
- 0:32Speaker 3: the listeners.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great to finally reconnect with you. I feel
- 0:35Speaker 2: like it's been some time, but we got playoff football.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Let me first start with this. Of all the possible matchups,
- 0:45Speaker 2: where do you put the Niners in terms of, you know,
- 0:48Speaker 2: versus the Rams and any other team's packers they could
- 0:51Speaker 2: have played. How did you kind of rank them? Did
- 0:53Speaker 2: you see one any more difficult than the other.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Packers? And then right behind them the forty nine ers.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Make no mistake about it, every game in the postseason
- 1:02Speaker 3: is going to be a challenge. But I think when
- 1:04Speaker 3: you look at what the forty nine ers have from
- 1:06Speaker 3: an offensive standpoint, you can argue that they have the
- 1:10Speaker 3: most lack luster defense in the postseason field. I think
- 1:13Speaker 3: that that should give you some sense of confidence going
- 1:17Speaker 3: into this game. If you're an Eagles fan listening, and
- 1:19Speaker 3: presumably you are, that they should be able to go
- 1:21Speaker 3: out there and take care of business. But there are
- 1:24Speaker 3: a couple of pieces there, and Christian McCaffrey and tight
- 1:26Speaker 3: end George Kittle, and of course Kyle Shanahan, who is
- 1:29Speaker 3: an offensive mastermind that you need to be mindful of
- 1:32Speaker 3: going into this one.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yeah, let's start with those two guys, McCaffrey and Kittle.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I ranked the Niners as a team that I worried about,
- 1:40Speaker 2: maybe at the top of the list because of those
- 1:42Speaker 2: two guys, because you got McCaffrey catching the ball of
- 1:44Speaker 2: the backfield, you got Kittle catching the ball over the middle,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and those are areas where sometimes the Eagles struggle a
- 1:50Speaker 2: little bit and coverage.
- 1:51Speaker 1: You only have one Cooper de Gene.
- 1:52Speaker 2: He can't cover them all here, and now they do
- 1:55Speaker 2: struggle on the outside their offensive line. Going to be
- 1:58Speaker 2: interesting to see what happens with Trent Williams here. But
- 2:01Speaker 2: the McCaffrey Kittle thing. Do the Eagles have enough to
- 2:05Speaker 2: kind of take those guys and focus on them.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Well, I'm going to try to ease any concerns you
- 2:11Speaker 3: may have, Mike, because the Eagles are an exceptional team
- 2:14Speaker 3: when it comes to tackling in space. I know that
- 2:16Speaker 3: you mentioned Cooper Degen, but they're also they also have
- 2:20Speaker 3: Zach Bond and they're going to have Nakobe Dean back
- 2:22Speaker 3: this week as well. So I think Gaines experience and
- 2:25Speaker 3: Vaughn's ability to cover a ton of ground sideline to
- 2:28Speaker 3: sideline should help in that respect. And then the Eagles
- 2:31Speaker 3: defensive line getting after it in the running game. Look,
- 2:35Speaker 3: Kyle Shanahan does a lot of different things in terms
- 2:37Speaker 3: of the razzle, dazzle of the eye, candy and things
- 2:40Speaker 3: to kind of sprits up the running game and shake
- 2:43Speaker 3: loose Christian McCaffrey, And you know you have to be
- 2:46Speaker 3: mindful of that. But I think the Eagles are a
- 2:48Speaker 3: fundamentally sound, disciplined defense that you shouldn't have a ton
- 2:52Speaker 3: of concerns about that. But you have to bring down
- 2:55Speaker 3: Christian McCaffrey when he has the ball, or he can
- 2:57Speaker 3: make you pay and rip off some chunk plays. And
- 3:00Speaker 3: then when it comes to the tight end, the Eagles
- 3:02Speaker 3: have done a really nice job defending tight ends this season. Now,
- 3:06Speaker 3: Kittle is a player that you could see the forty
- 3:08Speaker 3: nine ers try to get the ball in his hands
- 3:10Speaker 3: early on some short completions to give Brock Purdy some
- 3:13Speaker 3: semblance of a rhythm offensively, and Kittle is really good
- 3:18Speaker 3: after the catch. But again, I go back to the
- 3:22Speaker 3: point of the Eagles being such proficient tacklers, and I
- 3:27Speaker 3: think that that should be able to help limit their damage,
- 3:31Speaker 3: if you will, from an offensive perspective. But Kittle is
- 3:34Speaker 3: also going to be someone who is going to be
- 3:36Speaker 3: a factor in the red zone should they make it
- 3:38Speaker 3: into the red zone. But I think this Eagles defense
- 3:41Speaker 3: as well equipped to stop what the forty nine ers have.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you got Nakobe Dean possibly back here, and it
- 3:47Speaker 2: looks like he will be backy. You know, Vic Fangio
- 3:49Speaker 2: did say Tuesday he expects him to play. He was
- 3:51Speaker 2: on the practice field, so we do anticipate that. But
- 3:54Speaker 2: I would think that they want to get McCaffrey or
- 3:56Speaker 2: Kittle kind of lined up there and test that hamstring
- 3:59Speaker 2: out a little bit, So that's to watch. What about
- 4:01Speaker 2: Fangio's secondary, You match him up against Perdy's efficiency, pretty
- 4:05Speaker 2: good footwork, he's quick with the ball. Sometimes he can
- 4:08Speaker 2: move around. But they don't have a lot of weapons
- 4:11Speaker 2: on the outside. So what do you make of, you know,
- 4:13Speaker 2: kind of that secondary matchup against their outside weaponry.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it favors the Eagles pretty significantly. Look,
- 4:20Speaker 3: we'll have to wait and see what happens with Ricky Pearsall.
- 4:23Speaker 3: They're wide receiver who is the driving force of their
- 4:26Speaker 3: passing attack outside of George Kittle. Juwan Jennings is a
- 4:30Speaker 3: nice player, but he's really a best suit to be
- 4:32Speaker 3: a three, no better than a two. And I think
- 4:36Speaker 3: all things being equal, it favors an Eagles secondary that
- 4:40Speaker 3: in the sense that you're not going to have a
- 4:42Speaker 3: quarterback that's likely going to have an opportunity to target
- 4:45Speaker 3: at Dori Jackson, right, because we all know that every
- 4:47Speaker 3: quarterback going into this postseason, whenever they face the Eagles
- 4:51Speaker 3: for however many rounds, the objective for them in the
- 4:54Speaker 3: passing game is going to be try to find where
- 4:56Speaker 3: number eight is and try to take advantage of it.
- 4:59Speaker 3: But they nine aren't equipped to do that with the
- 5:02Speaker 3: weaponry that they have on the outside. But there's one
- 5:05Speaker 3: aspect that we should all be mindful of, and that
- 5:08Speaker 3: is the rock Perdy's ability to create yards with his legs.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And when the Eagles defense has had sticking points, Mike,
- 5:15Speaker 3: it's been against elusive quarterbacks who can kind of make
- 5:19Speaker 3: you pay if you're not remaining disciplined in your rush
- 5:22Speaker 3: lanes and things like that. And so while there may
- 5:24Speaker 3: not be a ton developing down the field, because I
- 5:27Speaker 3: do expect the Eagles pass rush to get after Purty,
- 5:30Speaker 3: you do have to be mindful of Purdy's ability to
- 5:32Speaker 3: kind of maneuver pressure and pick up yards with his legs.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I definitely agree with that, Trent Williams. We don't know
- 5:37Speaker 2: what's going to happen there, but if he plays hamstring,
- 5:40Speaker 2: much like we're talking about Dean, you got to try
- 5:42Speaker 2: to exploit that. But if he's whether he's in there
- 5:45Speaker 2: or not. Their offensive line not the biggest strong stuy,
- 5:48Speaker 2: but they are very unique upfront in their run game.
- 5:50Speaker 2: They do a lot of interesting stuff up front of
- 5:52Speaker 2: the run game. But I'm interested to see, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 2: if the Eagles can get the pressure that we talk
- 5:57Speaker 2: about they need to get on Purdy. With or without
- 5:59Speaker 2: Trent William. Should the Eagles defensive front win that battle
- 6:03Speaker 2: upfront against that offensive line?
- 6:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and to your point very quickly, Yeah, I mean
- 6:09Speaker 3: n Kobe Dean said it yesterday and by the way,
- 6:10Speaker 3: he said he's playing on Sunday, but he mentioned that
- 6:14Speaker 3: you have to have good eyes when you're going up
- 6:16Speaker 3: against a Kyle Shanahan offense, and they can do a
- 6:19Speaker 3: lot of different things. And being disciplined and having good
- 6:23Speaker 3: eyes and you know, honing in on those fundamentals are
- 6:26Speaker 3: going to be instrumental if the Eagles defense is going
- 6:29Speaker 3: to continue their sense here. But yeah, you look at
- 6:32Speaker 3: the defensive line from the Eagles perspective, and I do
- 6:35Speaker 3: believe that they have enough there, certainly from the interior
- 6:40Speaker 3: and even on the edge to provide pressure on brock
- 6:43Speaker 3: perty right. I mean, Jalen Phillips has been a revelation.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Adding him at the trade deadline I think not only
- 6:49Speaker 3: has helped the Eagles defense, but it's also created opportunities
- 6:54Speaker 3: for other players like Jay Loux Han and Nolan Smith
- 6:56Speaker 3: to be able to pin their ears back and go
- 6:58Speaker 3: get the quarterback from an interior perspective. You have Jalen Carter,
- 7:02Speaker 3: who I think that week off is going to be
- 7:04Speaker 3: hugely beneficial to someone like him. He was at practice
- 7:08Speaker 3: on Wednesday, had the hip injury that kept him out
- 7:12Speaker 3: of Sunday's game against the Commanders. But Moro Joma, I
- 7:15Speaker 3: think he is going to be someone who reaps the
- 7:17Speaker 3: benefit off of that offensive line that I think is
- 7:20Speaker 3: going to create some opportunities. And Jordan Davis, of course
- 7:24Speaker 3: four and a half sacks in the regular season, He's
- 7:26Speaker 3: been an absolute force at the center of that defensive line.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I like the Eagles advantage there. I think that's a
- 7:31Speaker 3: favorable matchup.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Right Andrew to Checko, we're taking a look at some
- 7:34Speaker 2: of the matchups that are really going to be key
- 7:36Speaker 2: for the Eagles win. Here to go to the Eagles
- 7:38Speaker 2: offense a little bit. Lane Johnson effect. Having him back. Now,
- 7:41Speaker 2: Fred Johnson's played pretty well. This isn't really an indictment
- 7:44Speaker 2: on him. However, we know there's a difference, whether it
- 7:47Speaker 2: be just placebo effect, medtal, whatever you want to call it.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Lane Johnson he has been back at the practice field.
- 7:53Speaker 2: It's no guarantee that he is out there. It's trending
- 7:56Speaker 2: that way. But do you see Lane Johnson beck because
- 7:59Speaker 2: they did add I know there was but too long
- 8:01Speaker 2: Tuesday or Siriana yesterday. I think it was yesterday, Sirianni.
- 8:04Speaker 2: They asked him like, how is the offense? Can you
- 8:06Speaker 2: do different things that you call different things with Lane
- 8:09Speaker 2: Johnson there?
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, And that's something that we'll all be keeping
- 8:14Speaker 3: an eye on those of us at practice. He was
- 8:17Speaker 3: out there on Wednesday, and I think when you look
- 8:20Speaker 3: at the injury that he had to overcome, that that's
- 8:22Speaker 3: a pretty significant injury that the list Frank and the
- 8:25Speaker 3: foot and I look at Lane Johnson as being someone
- 8:29Speaker 3: who you can make an argument is the most important
- 8:31Speaker 3: player on the side of the ball when he's in
- 8:33Speaker 3: you look at the record, there's a pretty big disparity
- 8:36Speaker 3: when he's not in the lineup. We've covered that up
- 8:38Speaker 3: quite a bit. But you can do different things when
- 8:40Speaker 3: he's in there. You don't have to chip as much,
- 8:42Speaker 3: You're able to take a little bit more liberties. And
- 8:45Speaker 3: I think just from a comfort level, Jayalen Hurtz knows
- 8:48Speaker 3: that Lane Johnson's going to have his back and there's
- 8:51Speaker 3: not a lot of guesswork and there's just that understanding
- 8:54Speaker 3: in chemistry that can't be quantified, and so I think
- 8:57Speaker 3: that's going to be especially in this game, to have
- 9:01Speaker 3: the entire band back together on the offensive line. And yes,
- 9:04Speaker 3: you're right, it's trending in the right direction in terms
- 9:07Speaker 3: of Lane Johnson going on Sunday.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to get your take on this because
- 9:11Speaker 2: Black Friday they played the Bears, and I remember that week.
- 9:14Speaker 2: We may have talked about it. Actually I don't know
- 9:16Speaker 2: if we talked that week because it was a short week,
- 9:18Speaker 2: it was a holiday there, but the Bears had been
- 9:20Speaker 2: decimated at linebacker, and really the story was, hey, they're
- 9:23Speaker 2: like down to their fourth, fifth, sixth linebackers, whatever it is.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Niners in a similar spot here. They also are a
- 9:30Speaker 2: team last in the league twenty sacks, last in the
- 9:34Speaker 2: league pressure rate. It kind of sounds like a game
- 9:38Speaker 2: that you should be able. They've struggled to run the
- 9:40Speaker 2: ball all year with that front offensive line. But is
- 9:43Speaker 2: this a week where you anticipate the Eagles offensive line
- 9:47Speaker 2: having a clear advantage.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Yes, especially I go back to the rest and that
- 9:53Speaker 3: was going to be hugely beneficial for someone like Jordan
- 9:56Speaker 3: Mylotta landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, of Courseane Johns. Because someone
- 10:01Speaker 3: isn't listed on the injury report doesn't mean they aren't
- 10:03Speaker 3: dealing with something. They've been banged up all season. The
- 10:05Speaker 3: key to postseason success, especially from the Eagles point of view,
- 10:09Speaker 3: is having a healthier offensive line, and I think having
- 10:12Speaker 3: that week off really optimizes their their ability to do that.
- 10:16Speaker 3: And this is going to be a run heavy game, Mike,
- 10:19Speaker 3: at least that's the way that I'm seeing it right now.
- 10:21Speaker 3: They Eagles have an advantage there in the trenches, and
- 10:24Speaker 3: that's what they want to do. They're going to try
- 10:26Speaker 3: to get Saquon Barkley going, and this is a game
- 10:28Speaker 3: where if you're Saquon, if it's blocked up for four
- 10:31Speaker 3: or five yards, take those yards, don't pitting the home run,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and churn forward and keep the offense on schedule, and
- 10:37Speaker 3: it eliminates their their sort of their their hiccup. They're
- 10:41Speaker 3: a common theme throughout the season of being behind the
- 10:43Speaker 3: sticks and all of a sudden, the whole menu is
- 10:46Speaker 3: at your disposal if you're Kevin Patulo. So yes, I'm
- 10:49Speaker 3: expecting them to take advantage of it. They're down to
- 10:51Speaker 3: there to bear bones at linebacker Eric Hendricks, who's been
- 10:55Speaker 3: in the league for quite some time. They had to
- 10:57Speaker 3: sign Kaizier White, former Eagle, and it's sort of a
- 11:01Speaker 3: patchwork second level there. So not only should you be
- 11:04Speaker 3: able to capitalize on that in the ground game, but
- 11:07Speaker 3: also Dallas Goddard should be able to really be a
- 11:11Speaker 3: focal point in the offense. One would think, get him
- 11:13Speaker 3: the ball over the middle, get him in space, allow
- 11:16Speaker 3: him to shed some tacklers, and when he gets going,
- 11:19Speaker 3: it tends to radiate. That energy really radiates throughout the sideline.
- 11:22Speaker 3: So I think it could be a huge Dallas Goddter game,
- 11:25Speaker 3: or at least in terms of volume.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Yeah, good point there, Andrew de Checko.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I'm glad you brought that up, because Goddard a guy
- 11:31Speaker 2: that in this game, yes, should be able to go
- 11:34Speaker 2: with some big, you know, big plays. There should be
- 11:36Speaker 2: a lot of stuff available down the middle of the field.
- 11:38Speaker 2: If they like to go down the middle of the field,
- 11:39Speaker 2: which has been a little bit of their buggaboot. They
- 11:42Speaker 2: should have plays on the outside though, right this is
- 11:44Speaker 2: another area where San Francisco does struggle. Their outside corner
- 11:48Speaker 2: is not an elite group here. This is where you say, now,
- 11:51Speaker 2: the odd part is you got the run game kind
- 11:53Speaker 2: of in your favor, You got matchups that you should
- 11:56Speaker 2: like on the outside, and they don't rush the passer
- 11:59Speaker 2: very well at all.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Now just eighteen sacks on the season, and I think
- 12:03Speaker 3: if this game kind of unfolds the way I'm envisioning it,
- 12:06Speaker 3: you run the ball heavily and then you set it
- 12:09Speaker 3: up to take advantage of opportunities in the in the
- 12:12Speaker 3: second level or the third level, I should say, Look,
- 12:15Speaker 3: I like their secondary. They're not they're they're far from
- 12:18Speaker 3: being among the NFL's best. But they have some players
- 12:21Speaker 3: like the Amador Lenor, who's going to see a lot
- 12:23Speaker 3: of AJ Brown, tough, physical, scrappy type of player. AJ
- 12:27Speaker 3: wins that battle, you know, every day of the week.
- 12:30Speaker 3: And then they have a couple of young safeties and
- 12:32Speaker 3: Jaiir Brown from Penn State. Malik Mustafa had a nice
- 12:35Speaker 3: chat with him at the NFL Combine. If they fly around,
- 12:38Speaker 3: but they're susceptible in coverage. And then you have uped
- 12:41Speaker 3: In Stout, their diminutive nickel defender who is really fun
- 12:45Speaker 3: to watch, good open field tackle. Plays a lot bigger
- 12:48Speaker 3: than his size would indicate, but they are right for
- 12:52Speaker 3: the taking in my estimation, and I do believe there
- 12:54Speaker 3: should be opportunity for some shot plays for the Eagles
- 12:58Speaker 3: to take advantage of.
- 12:59Speaker 2: And Andrew to check go here taking a look at
- 13:01Speaker 2: some of the last couple of things here you mentioned
- 13:03Speaker 2: before we talked about the Niners played last week.
- 13:06Speaker 1: They were up for the number one seed.
- 13:08Speaker 2: They lost a linebacker in that game, they got beat
- 13:10Speaker 2: up in that game. They scored three points in that game.
- 13:13Speaker 2: They had scored forty plus two straight weeks leading into
- 13:17Speaker 2: the last week, and they come up with three leagals
- 13:20Speaker 2: chose to rest it. What's the locker room vibe with
- 13:24Speaker 2: the rest versus Russ situation or playing? I guess did
- 13:29Speaker 2: you sense at all that there was any thought from
- 13:32Speaker 2: the players that they should have been out there, because
- 13:34Speaker 2: obviously Andrew, some guys did play, Smith played, defensive guys
- 13:40Speaker 2: did play. But was it pretty well received that this
- 13:44Speaker 2: was the best modus operande for a deep playoff run.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Yes, based on everything that I've gathered and talking to players, yeah,
- 13:53Speaker 3: that the sentiment was pretty positive. It was something that
- 13:56Speaker 3: they needed. There were a lot of players who were
- 13:58Speaker 3: banged up and really look at it going into that game,
- 14:02Speaker 3: you had one a banged up offensive line, of course,
- 14:05Speaker 3: but on the defensive side, which many are expecting to
- 14:08Speaker 3: be the catalyst to fueling this Eagles postseason run, Jalen
- 14:12Speaker 3: Phillips was rolled out of that game with an ankle injury.
- 14:14Speaker 3: He played seventeen games this season, hadn't had a bye week.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Nikobe Dean was out with the hamstring injury, Marcus EPs
- 14:21Speaker 3: with the concussion you look at, Jalen Carter was out
- 14:24Speaker 3: of that game with a hip injury. So that week
- 14:28Speaker 3: is going to be proved to be at least I think,
- 14:30Speaker 3: instrumental in helping the Eagles get out to a faster
- 14:34Speaker 3: start this postseason, because you need your defense to be
- 14:37Speaker 3: as well rested as possible if you're expecting them, as
- 14:40Speaker 3: they have all season, to really do the heavy lifting here.
- 14:42Speaker 3: So yes, I do think that it was well received,
- 14:44Speaker 3: and just point to the injury report going into the
- 14:47Speaker 3: Sunday's game tells you all you need to know.
- 14:49Speaker 1: All right, Andrew, obviously.
- 14:53Speaker 2: You know the Niners are beat up here Philadelphia saying
- 14:56Speaker 2: we took the week off and that's the difference for us.
- 14:58Speaker 2: What's the X factor for you? Philadelphia thought rest was
- 15:02Speaker 2: their X factor. What's your X factor in a playoff
- 15:05Speaker 2: game like this?
- 15:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the X factor is going to be
- 15:09Speaker 3: one the rest. But how that's going to directly impact
- 15:12Speaker 3: the running game and the key to the Eagles' success
- 15:15Speaker 3: starts up front with the offensive line. But Saquon Barkley,
- 15:19Speaker 3: maybe a sprinkle in Tank Bigsby for three or four
- 15:22Speaker 3: carries a game as a change up. But that if
- 15:24Speaker 3: the Eagles are able to do that, and they're able
- 15:26Speaker 3: to control the game and dictate the way the defense plays,
- 15:30Speaker 3: it's going to open up everything. That's the way that
- 15:32Speaker 3: they want to play, and I think that is going
- 15:34Speaker 3: to be the X factor. I do believe this running
- 15:36Speaker 3: game is going to come alive in the postseason, which
- 15:38Speaker 3: should open up a ton of doors for the Eagles
- 15:41Speaker 3: moving forward.
- 15:41Speaker 2: All Right, it's the Eagles and the Niners, and you
- 15:43Speaker 2: can listen to the game right here on ninety seven
- 15:45Speaker 2: three ESPN three o'clock with the coverage four thirty. Merril
