- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, Movie
- 0:06talk show where each week one of us takes a movie off our shelf,
- 0:09presents it to the other and discusses it at length.
- 0:16This week we've got coming off of Dave's Shelf, 1991's Robin
- 0:20Hood, Prince of Thieves, directed by Kevin Reynolds,
- 0:23starring Kevin Costner, Mary Elizabeth, Master Antonio.
- 0:27Very good. Yeah.
- 0:28They just struggle with that. No, no, no, she's great.
- 0:30Scarface. The abyss.
- 0:32The abyss. That's limbo.
- 0:34She was with Ed Harris. That's right.
- 0:36Here's your connected tissue that you.
- 0:38Color of Money with Tom Cruise. She's wonderful actor.
- 0:40And we've got the late, great Alan Rickman.
- 0:44Also Michael Wincott, who doesn't get enough credit as far
- 0:47as I'm concerned. Not nearly enough.
- 0:48Who's that again? He's his cousin.
- 0:50Great voice. Kinda looks like Guy Pierce,
- 0:52actually. A little bit sure.
- 0:54Just a little bit sure. Kevin Reynolds directed The
- 0:56Count of Monte Cristo a few years after this movie.
- 0:59And Guy Pierce in that movie, just for the record.
- 1:02You're welcome. And Jim Caviezel.
- 1:04Yeah. Jimmy.
- 1:05Yeah, wonderful. Here we are, David.
- 1:06It's another week. I have to ask you.
- 1:08I must. It's contractually obligated.
- 1:11Why this movie? Why now?
- 1:13I'm fine, I don't care. It's mostly because you brought
- 1:18off Kevin Costner, Field of Dreams recently and I felt it
- 1:22was my turn to bring Kevin a few weeks later and this was a
- 1:26household favorite. Oh, lovely.
- 1:27OK. It was one of the top hits of my
- 1:30home, the multi rental, you know where it comes home every, you
- 1:35know, few months, what have you. I don't know the exact numbers
- 1:37on it, but it's up there with Die Hard, Back to the Future.
- 1:41Wow, that esteem. I feel like it was, I could be
- 1:44wrong. I mean, I didn't have the toy,
- 1:46so obviously didn't impact us that much.
- 1:48But 91, I mean, that's just a great year for me.
- 1:52Things were really happening. I was coming into my own.
- 1:54You know, teenager. Yeah.
- 1:56Puberty, I think. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:58And this was really an outlet for me, this movie, to really
- 2:01run away to the forest. Yeah, I wondered if you're
- 2:03because of your country background.
- 2:07I think it was filmed, actually. Yeah.
- 2:08I wondered. If if this looked anything like
- 2:11your backyard, did you come anywhere near the Sherwood
- 2:14Forest? And some days, yeah, if you
- 2:16didn't trim it, that's right. That's right.
- 2:18Well, I think of like blank, empty fields.
- 2:21And then I thought, well, maybe you've got a big forest behind
- 2:23you. Who's to say?
- 2:24I am to say there was not a forest directly behind me, there
- 2:28was a field. OK.
- 2:30Corn possibly, I imagine. Field, Field of Dreams even
- 2:34might have been. But I could see forests like not
- 2:37sure you know, far off into. Distance.
- 2:38We have forests near where I grew up and we spent a lot of
- 2:41time playing in there. So no.
- 2:42Did you play like Robin Hood? Like, I don't know that
- 2:45specifically. I remember playing a lot of 18,
- 2:47probably a lot of guns back in the no arrows days.
- 2:50No arrows, no a lot of guns. What have I got you?
- 2:53No, you didn't. OK, then the honor system till
- 2:59laser. Tag.
- 2:59Then there was a. You could prove it.
- 3:02Speaking of honor, it is that to be here.
- 3:05I don't use that term often, no or lightly, and I don't have
- 3:09any. But it is that to be here with
- 3:12you and your wonderful new couch, that's very nice.
- 3:16I like the color. Wonderful.
- 3:18Yeah, it's not too blue, but it's blue enough.
- 3:21I think that's what we're. Looking for, right, The sweet
- 3:22spot, my friend. I want to throw it back to you,
- 3:25if I may. What is your history with the
- 3:28movie? It's easy to say that you've
- 3:30seen it, but I want to know, did Phil at the age of, whatever,
- 3:3412? Yeah.
- 3:36Go to the theaters for this one. No, I don't remember seeing in
- 3:39the theater. It's possible, but I don't have
- 3:40any memory of it. I would suggest at that very
- 3:43young age it was more video rental and the box.
- 3:48I was going to say, this is probably on your precious.
- 3:51Black Box, yeah, 100 percent, 100%.
- 3:54But yeah, I didn't really start. I don't have a lot of memory of
- 3:56going to movies like often until a little bit a few years later.
- 4:01Yeah, I may, I I may have. But the movies came out to our
- 4:05theater a little later. So I think in 91 we were getting
- 4:09Star Wars, which was not called A New Hope at that point.
- 4:13Actually, by then it might have been.
- 4:14The original 77. It might have been a New Hope by
- 4:16the time it got to us. Sure, packed our but.
- 4:20Okay, yeah, it's a movie that I did not see in the theater.
- 4:23However, I loved this movie when I was younger.
- 4:27It was similar to what you're saying.
- 4:28Real crowd, favorite family. Really liked it.
- 4:31We bought it. We owned a lot of VHS back in
- 4:33the day. As you can imagine, we're a a
- 4:35family of physical media consumers.
- 4:38I assumed you guys had beta as well but.
- 4:40They did, but not, you know, before I was born.
- 4:42So. They did.
- 4:43They did. They did.
- 4:44The folks. But yeah, so it was a movie I
- 4:47loved. I remember really just enjoying
- 4:49it. I I remember I didn't own the
- 4:50toys, but remember the the commercials very well.
- 4:54And I remember that the music video was on much music all the
- 4:59time. The Bryan Adams everything I do
- 5:02I Canadian you Canadian sure absolutely still is still.
- 5:06He doesn't love that I don't think no, he lives in England.
- 5:09He's got issues with CAN, con and.
- 5:11He's always been a little bit reckless.
- 5:12Yeah, that's right. Ever since the fateful summer of
- 5:1769. That being said, I haven't seen
- 5:20this movie in at least 20 years. That was actually my next
- 5:23question. Yeah, Was the when was the last
- 5:25time you ever saw? Because like yourself, I would
- 5:27say that it's probably been minimum minimum over a decade.
- 5:32Yeah, I would say maybe 20 years.
- 5:34It's been a very long time. I think my brother owned the
- 5:38DVD. He's got the flap.
- 5:39The flap. Well this was the extended of
- 5:43two flaps, so now it's like 2. Long flaps.
- 5:46All right. Well, la di da.
- 5:48But I don't, I never owned this movie.
- 5:50I don't think I don't have any memory of ever owning in this
- 5:53movie. Well, I would.
- 5:55Maybe recommend it if it's, I don't know, maybe there's an
- 5:58upgrade out there, Phillip. There Well, certainly from
- 6:00nothing there's an upgrade to what I to what I don't have, I
- 6:05think to having it I. Think we can get I think we can
- 6:07get you at least the Blu-ray. I haven't seen a 4K copy of it
- 6:10yet which I'm I'm surprised, but as we're in the movie there is a
- 6:15couple of scenes that 4K might be not be too friendly.
- 6:18To this to this. Movie, but we'll get to that as
- 6:21it come. Morgan Creek iconic Ace Ventura
- 6:24is a memory with that because I watched it so many times.
- 6:27Totally. Correct me if I'm wrong, this
- 6:29intro music is connected to something else which came first
- 6:33or am I wrong? This was a Morgan Creek movie
- 6:35with a Michael Cayman score. OK, that.
- 6:37Is one of the most fantastic music scores and Morgan Creek
- 6:42just went I'll take that and we'll use it as our as our title
- 6:46theme. Can't blame them.
- 6:47No, it's can't blame them. Perfect piece of music, so.
- 6:49It's it's it's amazing and that's one thing this movie is
- 6:52well known for. Is it soundtrack and it it's
- 6:55right away. It's like, oh God, I love this
- 6:57movie. It gives you.
- 6:58I think I love this movie. It gets you.
- 7:00Pumped right away and it gives you this real like soundscape.
- 7:02It's almost like an overture because we're not getting, it's
- 7:05not visuals, they're just like a tapestries and other things.
- 7:08So you're locked into what the score is.
- 7:11And from the opening note throughout, it's just
- 7:15captivating and invigorating and exciting.
- 7:18Like it's, it's an incredible piece of music.
- 7:19It does as much as it can with Tapestry, Absolutely.
- 7:22And this might be our first Tapestry intro, yeah.
- 7:26Certainly, considering it's tapestry.
- 7:28Did I say? Did I?
- 7:29What did I say? Tapestry a couple of times.
- 7:31It's come on. Well, that one's like notably
- 7:34wrong. I have to correct that one.
- 7:36Tapestry doesn't. I want to get my my incorrect
- 7:39word out early on in the episode.
- 7:41So, you know, little Easter eggs for the audience. 1194 AD Yeah,
- 7:52that's where we are. Hell of a year.
- 7:54Where were you? I was not in Gulag but appears
- 7:58that Robin was and his good friend.
- 8:01Azim, I'm not going to give you the whole name.
- 8:04I don't. Remember, no, no, no, his actual
- 8:06friend in there with him, Peter. Pete.
- 8:10Yeah, yeah, I was. I was giving it to you while I
- 8:13thought of the name, and luckily it came to me and not
- 8:17fortunately, someone stole some bread.
- 8:20That's where. But that's what brings us here
- 8:22to this gulag or gulag. Have you ever stolen bread?
- 8:25I think we need to get that out of the way.
- 8:27No, but I did steal trunkle bars.
- 8:29Yeah, we know about that. Bubble gum.
- 8:30Actually. Not junk bars.
- 8:31Bubble gum. Yeah, I admit it.
- 8:33And you stole. You would steal little toy
- 8:35parts. Oh, so you need a Yeah, for
- 8:37sure. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:38Junk your dog's chain. Roddy Piper's kilt.
- 8:41Absolutely. What do you think about the the
- 8:44the way they deal with crime back then?
- 8:45Do you want to bring it back or it's a little harsh?
- 8:48Well, now that my law breaking days are over, I think yeah.
- 8:52No problem, bring it. Back.
- 8:54Go ahead. Yeah.
- 8:55Yeah. You know, chopping off a limb is
- 8:57a little extreme. Maybe half a finger, yeah.
- 9:00You know, fingers you can get around.
- 9:03But just reminds you of brutal things were probably back in the
- 9:0611th 12 hundreds, sure, absolutely dark ages.
- 9:10Maybe, I don't know, my history is a little bit, you know, not
- 9:12great. Well, it definitely was dark.
- 9:18The movie and the caverns were definitely dark.
- 9:21We get a nice little action scene to kind of kick off the
- 9:23movie, yeah. You don't really know how he
- 9:25gets out of this little predicament.
- 9:27It kind of happens, kind of. Fast the geography of the movie,
- 9:30at least in these kinds of scenes, they don't really hold
- 9:32up. I, I was going to ask you
- 9:34because at the beginning, once they just get out, I'm thinking,
- 9:36did they give all the money to Bryan Adams and couldn't afford
- 9:39a really good set? Because it was very like, this
- 9:42is a set. Sure.
- 9:43And I was, I didn't remember that as a kid.
- 9:45I'm thinking that this is like really looks good for, you know,
- 9:4891. Sure, sure.
- 9:50But I could tell it was kind of built.
- 9:51It was a couple of scenes for sure, that look.
- 9:53I was out. Spoiler alert.
- 9:57But yeah, no, it quickly, quickly passed.
- 9:59Yeah, noticeable. It's just, it's an interesting
- 10:01thing. You know, right off the bat I'll
- 10:03say generally speaking, this movie is a let down.
- 10:07Well, you're you're gonna say that.
- 10:08Now I'm coming out and. That's not a hot take, just a
- 10:10regular. Take it's a regular take and
- 10:12it's not that the movie is bad, it's just that I maybe
- 10:16remembered it being something else, or more specifically, I
- 10:20watched the extended cut. Oh, don't do that.
- 10:22And I think that there's, I think it's got some pacing
- 10:25problems. How long is the extended cut for
- 10:27those who don't know, including myself?
- 10:28There's 23 extra minutes. OK, I believe you.
- 10:30That's fine. I just so it seems like this I
- 10:33was like, it's a lifeless action scene with geography.
- 10:37That's a little bit messed up. Now this is different.
- 10:39I'm watching this movie more as a, you know, 40 year old man as
- 10:43opposed to a 12 year old boy. You're not 4.
- 10:46So. But yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 10:48So those things maybe didn't factor in or the stuff that I
- 10:52thought was really great when I was young was enough to kind of
- 10:54cover some of the stuff. I didn't think that was that
- 10:56great. But I thought in watching this
- 10:58time, it was a little less great than I remembered.
- 11:00But in starting with this kind of early scene, I was sort of
- 11:04that just as we described. I've wondered why there was such
- 11:07flash and he was all of a sudden escaped and everybody's free and
- 11:11they're just going, you know, just felt like, where's the
- 11:15tension? It was tension free.
- 11:16Yeah, other than losing the arm. And I have a question for you.
- 11:20You've you've been known. You've been on the record for
- 11:23forgiving some pretty terrible accent work over the years.
- 11:26Yeah, I guess I have. Where do you think?
- 11:28Zone. Yes, I was there.
- 11:30Do you think that it's better or worse that Costner more or less
- 11:35keeps his regular accent more or less?
- 11:37Because he does not sometimes. He can come across as I need to
- 11:42be good looking to be accepted in this role.
- 11:45Sure, because he just talks to normal.
- 11:48Like, he's like, pretty flat. Casual.
- 11:50Flat. Yeah, a little too casual for
- 11:51this role, sure, But I'm happy that he didn't really make an
- 11:55attempt. Every once in a while, you'll
- 11:57see it or you'll hear it. Sort of questionable.
- 11:59Yeah. When he says, did you give
- 12:01yourself this name? When he is finding out that
- 12:04Azeem's name is a great one. It's funny, though.
- 12:07It's a great, it's a funny line, but it's also like that's he.
- 12:10That's like the first time in the movie when he sits down.
- 12:13His first line in the movie is pretty close to being.
- 12:16This is English courage. When he puts his hand on the you
- 12:19know. American English courage.
- 12:20Yeah, I was sort. Of thinking like, what a funny
- 12:23choice to have is his first line delivered in such an American
- 12:26accent. Now, I don't typically care
- 12:27about things like this because similar to a movie like Hunt for
- 12:30Red October, which we watched, Yes.
- 12:32Yeah. OK.
- 12:33We're going to get a little Russia in there, Russian in
- 12:35there. They did it a new way and that.
- 12:37Totally. But I don't care that Russian,
- 12:39Soviet, Lithuanian commander is actually Scottish Sean Connery.
- 12:44That doesn't bother me enough to Take Me Out of the movie.
- 12:47I just thought this one at the time was such a a bit of a buzz
- 12:50and it made me remember Robin Hood Men in Tights.
- 12:54If you recall that movie, I haven't seen it spoof and I just
- 12:57remember the trailer in particular.
- 12:58I've seen the movie, but I remember the trailer in
- 13:00particular where someone looks up and says, well, why should we
- 13:02trust you and Carrie? Elwis says.
- 13:05Because unlike other Robin Hood's, I speak in an English
- 13:08accent. So it was a dig, it was a thing
- 13:11in the air that he was not sort of the proper Englishman.
- 13:15No, I'm OK with that. I mean, I do have a soft spot
- 13:18for Kevy. Sure.
- 13:19Wow. We've done some great films of
- 13:20his. Yeah, one we did.
- 13:22Untouchables. Thank you very much.
- 13:24You let me finish. I was just counting on my
- 13:26fingers, all right. Yeah, well, he's great.
- 13:31I think he's great and I think he's good in this.
- 13:34He has, he has, he does have presence.
- 13:35Yeah, like on screen presence. Let's move away a little bit, if
- 13:38you could, from Kevin for a moment.
- 13:40And this that's Fast forward, if you're OK with this, of course,
- 13:44four months, 4-4 months. Yes, later escaped with Azim.
- 13:49Can't shake him. He can't shake him.
- 13:52You wish you could. Well, he owes a life debt.
- 13:55Yeah, we've seen this before in a movie.
- 13:58I assume you don't know which one, but he hired the guys to
- 14:02kind of, like, kill him, basically.
- 14:04Or at least deter him from keeping with them.
- 14:07And that fails, and then they're buddies.
- 14:09Basically, yes. I wondered that scene, why that
- 14:13just it's so quick. These things happen.
- 14:15It's like they turn on him and they're dispatched so quickly
- 14:20that there's no drama, there's no tension.
- 14:22I remember this being a little bit more impactful when I was.
- 14:24Yeah, and like, I thought there was a moment and there isn't,
- 14:27and now they're buddies without any real reason for it other
- 14:30than I'm your servant, like I'm your guy.
- 14:32I tried, yeah. That's what he says.
- 14:34Well, I had to try. Yeah, that's it.
- 14:36OK. He's doing Snow angels in the
- 14:39Water coster to me, who is an actor I really like, as we've
- 14:42talked about, is really a weak link in this movie.
- 14:45Now that's not just a regular. Take No, it's at least.
- 14:47Warm. And there's a couple of these
- 14:49early scenes where I'm just like, I'm not feeling with this
- 14:51guy later. I think he granted, grows into
- 14:53it. But these early scenes, I'm just
- 14:55like, I don't, I don't know this guy as this character.
- 14:58I think I'm forced to agree with.
- 14:59And he's supposed to play younger.
- 15:00I think he's like I. Mean he's only 32 in this I
- 15:03believe. I don't know, there's something
- 15:04that's sort of off from his performance, I think.
- 15:06Yeah, again, I am. I do agree with you to a certain
- 15:08degree. I want to hear your thoughts.
- 15:10In the meantime, this may have already happened.
- 15:13His dad, he's writing a letter wondering about where his son
- 15:18is. If you recall, he's doing a bit
- 15:19of a voice over. If you recall, he's having inner
- 15:21thought. Is it the king?
- 15:22Yeah, it's the king. Well, it's his.
- 15:24King, I guess. Yeah.
- 15:25Not King Richard though. No, no, Later, Later, later.
- 15:29He's off. But what I'm listening to him do
- 15:31is little inner thoughts voice over.
- 15:33Writing, so it's a narration. Of narration.
- 15:36Sorry. Thank you, Phillip.
- 15:37It sounds like you're calling Moviefone a little bit.
- 15:42That voice is very much like, yeah, let me look at this.
- 15:45Why don't you just tell me what's going on with my son?
- 15:49That's right. I like the visual of this scene.
- 15:51OK. Good.
- 15:52Like coming out, being lured out.
- 15:54I like the betrayal. You like betrayal?
- 15:56Just in general, this era, this is like that.
- 15:58How that goes. One of the things I liked about
- 16:01a show like ATV show like the Game of Thrones or whatnot, is.
- 16:04That I haven't seen it. The Betrayal and the behind the
- 16:10the kind of inner workings of these families and how they're
- 16:14trying to all struggling for power and scrambling for
- 16:16different ways in or out a lot of.
- 16:18That going on. Yeah, and it's really, it's a
- 16:20great show for the first few years and this I liked.
- 16:23So luring them in, coming out to the row of of enemies and
- 16:29introduction of Mr. Rickman. Allen.
- 16:32Allen Rickman as the sheriff. Yeah, pulling down the master I
- 16:35remember vividly from the trailer, and the King just rides
- 16:39in on his horse basically to get mauled.
- 16:41It's really a poor strategy, like kamikaze.
- 16:44I feel that Rickman, not him himself, because he's reading
- 16:48the script, he's doing his job and he has a well, as we know,
- 16:51still a line from Darth Vader, you know, same line.
- 16:54Join us or die. Is it the Luke I believe?
- 16:57OK, I wouldn't say that to my son.
- 16:59I. Wouldn't say he said die though.
- 17:02Join us or die. Something like that.
- 17:04I'll look into it at The Empire Strikes Back, I believe when
- 17:07just before he cuts off his hand.
- 17:09Kind of Dark Ages and and the Empire, sure.
- 17:12Sure, a long time ago. The second time I watched this
- 17:14movie, though, I made sure to make eye contact with Duncan.
- 17:18Because we're not going to see. Those eyes.
- 17:21No. You want to take them in while
- 17:22you can? Yeah, I do.
- 17:23It's. Only a moment where you can
- 17:24Really. Kind of.
- 17:25I paused it. Yeah.
- 17:26Let me look at your eyes. Gazed.
- 17:27For a moment, yeah. Poor guy, Poor guy.
- 17:31Yeah, the King is racing overrun and and Duncan, we assume,
- 17:35survives. Well, I don't.
- 17:36I didn't assume that the first time Mom watched it when I was a
- 17:39young lad. Assumed he perished.
- 17:41Actually. I was pleasantly surprised when
- 17:43he came up a little while later. Wishes he were dead.
- 17:46Yeah, I bet he yes, he's a funny character.
- 17:49We get and we get Michael Wincott, who you don't have any
- 17:52record election of. Should I?
- 17:54I mean, I think I love this guy's voice.
- 17:56I've always loved his voice most specifically from this movie at
- 17:58first, but he was in the crow couple years later he was an
- 18:01alien resurrection. More recently was in a movie
- 18:04called Nope, Jordan Peele movie. He plays cinematographer.
- 18:08He was fantastic in that. He just got a great voice.
- 18:10I really love him. He he was also in a movie called
- 18:14Strange Days, may or may not remember.
- 18:19It's coming off the shelf early next year.
- 18:23Yeah, early next year. It might be.
- 18:24It might kick things off 2026. So but yeah, anyway, a great
- 18:30actor. I really like him and and he's
- 18:32in this chasing after a young boy Wolf, they call him he's.
- 18:35A deer killer. Sure, as he should be.
- 18:37As he, as most people should be. You know hate deer.
- 18:40This is the old days, you know, and eat, got to eat.
- 18:43Got what I don't really understand.
- 18:46Again, as a kid I just like this character a lot but in watching
- 18:48it this time he sucks. Not the actor, the character.
- 18:52Characters like he doesn't succeed one time.
- 18:54No. He he fails on every mission he
- 18:56ever goes out on. All of his men die with ease.
- 19:00He's. Never a threat.
- 19:01He's the cousin though. He just.
- 19:03He got the job because he's the. Cousin, right?
- 19:04He knows a guy. Yeah.
- 19:05When I think about this movie, when I think about remembering
- 19:08what happened, I remember Michael Wincott and like this
- 19:10cool character and this he's. Like the Roscoe?
- 19:13He's nothing in this. It's crazy to me that how
- 19:17inferior his character is. Yeah, he looks evil and he and
- 19:21he has demeanors. He's.
- 19:22Got the voice. Yeah, he's great.
- 19:24And I kind of enjoyed the Azeem's part of this where he's.
- 19:29Got to pray. Yeah.
- 19:31So he's got to pray and he's checks out, by the way, just so
- 19:34you know, that's correct. It's very good, very good.
- 19:37And we have a moment where Costner Locksley Robin is, you
- 19:41know, like, hey, you said you were going to save my life and
- 19:43he says I'll do it when I'm ready.
- 19:45It's kind of defeats the purpose a little bit.
- 19:46And here you are alive. So obviously he's fine.
- 19:49But anyway, it's. Trying to be funny.
- 19:50It is funny. It is funny.
- 19:51You think? Here's a good question is that
- 19:53does this movie's reliance on comedy help or hinder the movie,
- 19:58in your opinion? I would say it balances the
- 20:02sheets. OK.
- 20:03Whatever that means, I know. It's someone who's married doing
- 20:07a. I know, I know.
- 20:08I don't think it. I don't think it hurts.
- 20:09I don't know how much it helps, but I certainly don't mind that
- 20:12it's there and I have a bit of a a giggle or a chuckle, but.
- 20:16Yeah, I think my maybe my issue is that it's not funny.
- 20:18It's not like the the things that it wants to be funny, like
- 20:21a line like did you give yourself this name?
- 20:23That's funny. That's probably the funny, but
- 20:24that's maybe the funniest line in the whole movie.
- 20:26And yet there's three or four other times where they'll have a
- 20:28little witticism or whatever else and I'll just, it falls
- 20:31flat to me. And at certain times the tone,
- 20:34then it gets a little bit off as far as I'm concerned.
- 20:37Comedy and age well in this movie.
- 20:39It's funny though when you bring it up.
- 20:40We both really enjoyed it younger.
- 20:42I think part of it is you remember the parts you like and
- 20:45then you don't remember the other parts because it's
- 20:47obviously I'm sort of already waiting for.
- 20:49Later, you're always rushing. Yeah, you're always racing for
- 20:53that. Thing can't live in the now.
- 20:56No, I got a real problem with that.
- 20:57What I don't have a problem with is with witches.
- 21:00No, you're, you're a witch guy I.
- 21:01Think they're just misunderstood.
- 21:03I enjoy Shannen Doherty and charm.
- 21:05I enjoy Rose McGowan and. You definitely Rose McGowan, Guy
- 21:10A. 100% absolutely in 96 or five, whenever watching Scream,
- 21:16this was the greatest, this is the peak.
- 21:18Not my type, I actually didn't watch charm, just so you know.
- 21:19And I actually do have a problem with witches.
- 21:21Okay, well, Charmed also stars Holly Marie Combs, who you may
- 21:25remember from the poker game in Ocean's 11.
- 21:28Oh yes, visually, their face. That's we talked about that one
- 21:31Alyssa Milano as well and then. I you may have a my brother had
- 21:36many a poster of Alyssa Milano. He's 3 year old, three years
- 21:39older than me. So we're talking, you know, for
- 21:41him prime time. But I partook.
- 21:43Yeah. I watched that Poison Ivy or
- 21:45whatever. Was that a two?
- 21:47Yeah, it was. A2 OK, yeah, yeah.
- 21:48Well, that be ones with Drew Barrymore.
- 21:50Yes, that's right. Edgy, but it's back to the
- 21:54witch. Are you OK that she's a bit of a
- 21:56predictor of the future? Is that?
- 21:59Yeah, I think that that's the world they're living in this era
- 22:01is. That a witch?
- 22:02Thing though, I guess, well, I think if you can foresee the
- 22:04future, you'd be considered a witch whether you are actually a
- 22:06witch or not. The egg in the blood.
- 22:09Did that kind of gross you out? No, no, the spit later, that's
- 22:13what grows. She's a Hawker.
- 22:14She's a Hawker. She's a Hawker.
- 22:16I don't like hawkers. No, You know, people walking
- 22:18down the street and like, you know.
- 22:20No, come on. Disgusting.
- 22:21Do that at. Privacy your own home, please.
- 22:23People at best, at best, or not at all.
- 22:26Yeah, but we'll get more of her a little bit later because she's
- 22:29going to have some big scenes. Yeah, she's big.
- 22:31She ends up becoming a pretty strong focal point of the to the
- 22:35turning point of this movie, The plot.
- 22:36Yeah, problematic. Dad's dead.
- 22:39Dad is dead. You know, I like movies with
- 22:41daddy issues. Yeah, this is unresolved.
- 22:45It is right. Costner once again doesn't know,
- 22:48doesn't his relationship with his father where he left it,
- 22:50that's true. It doesn't concile the two very.
- 22:53Similar to FOD. That's right, doesn't believe
- 22:56that he was a devil worshipper. No, check the tape there.
- 23:00Question about best. But he's coming back and he sees
- 23:03that. He's obviously, I say obviously
- 23:05because the shot doesn't really do a lot of.
- 23:07This movie keeps it pretty clean.
- 23:09Yeah, there's a lot of screen. I know you would.
- 23:11I. Would like to see a little more
- 23:12of the. Gross, I know you're sick.
- 23:13But he wonders why Duncan didn't bring and cut him down.
- 23:16Yes, why have you left him here? I think he's got a pretty valid
- 23:20excuse. Yep, it's the one time you get
- 23:22the write off. Hey, I can't see like, come on.
- 23:24Work with me here. Yes, I like this Duncan
- 23:27character. What are your thoughts?
- 23:28As a sidekick, because he's really just there as a bit of a
- 23:30sidekick. Yeah.
- 23:31No, I I have. Believe me.
- 23:32I have no issues with Duncan. Yeah, not at all.
- 23:34Name close. I thought generally speaking,
- 23:37the makeup looked, well, like looked good throughout the whole
- 23:39movie. I felt bad.
- 23:40I mean, I really felt bad for the guy.
- 23:42Nice old guy. Yeah, very.
- 23:43What are you gonna do? What are you gonna do?
- 23:45Oil. Right, that's all you can hope
- 23:46for. That's all you can hope for.
- 23:55Robin's an honorable man, seemingly he takes the ring from
- 23:59the guy in the prison, he says. Say his name.
- 24:01Give this Peter. Peter comes and says here, get
- 24:05this to Marian. They're brother and sister Peter
- 24:07and Marian, just so you know. Gotcha.
- 24:09So what does Robin do when his father is dead and he figures
- 24:13out I need something to do with my life?
- 24:15Goes to see Marian fulfills the oath.
- 24:17I respect that. I knew.
- 24:19I knew you would. And.
- 24:21It's a it's a nice. I like this scene overall.
- 24:23Like the introduction of Marian and her doppel.
- 24:25Not sorry I was going to say doppelganger but they do not
- 24:27look like not quite. I remember being fooled, I
- 24:29think. The first time.
- 24:31Why wouldn't I be? You know I'm an idiot.
- 24:34Still am. I just happened to have seen the
- 24:35movie. That's right.
- 24:36That's right. I, I thought it was really kind
- 24:38of, that's a clever scene. Generally speaking, I thought
- 24:40his performance is really good in that this is one of those
- 24:42it's not really like hilarious, but it's the way it's played.
- 24:45I thought for laughs is really smart and he gets to act a
- 24:49little like perform right, like the years have been kind to you
- 24:52right exactly playing it up and then and then obviously Marion
- 24:56attacking from the side and they get.
- 24:58Into a little move. Good move.
- 24:59I thought this was a pretty great scene, generally speaking.
- 25:02I thought it was like engaging in performances and it was a
- 25:04great introduction of Marion, who unfortunately, it does a
- 25:08disservice to her character throughout the rest of the movie
- 25:12because as an introduction, strong, I'm thinking assertive,
- 25:15strong, deceptive when needed, clever, ahead of the game.
- 25:20They have a system in place, so this and that good system.
- 25:23And then what ends up happening is almost immediately, once
- 25:25Robin shows up, she's either not on screen for a big chunk of it,
- 25:31yeah. Or when she is on screen, she's
- 25:34really just the side, you know, just have any weight.
- 25:37Doesn't have a real character side, babe.
- 25:39Yeah. Doesn't really have any any
- 25:42merit, right? In some weird ways.
- 25:44Well, watch the Abyss because she gets back into a more.
- 25:47Yeah, she's great. The Abyss.
- 25:48So that's, you know, been a long time since I watched that, which
- 25:51does have a 4K upgrade, I believe.
- 25:52Yeah, it's right there. OK, there it is.
- 25:54As he points to his galactic shelf.
- 25:59You're laughing as we get to another funny moment.
- 26:02Yeah. Yes.
- 26:04Azim, if I can call him that. He wants you to.
- 26:07Yeah, that's true. Has.
- 26:09What do you call those things? Telescope.
- 26:11Telescope. Yeah.
- 26:12Or like a single binocular. 1A1 eyed binocular.
- 26:15Yes. That's the original name.
- 26:17Yeah. Hands it to Robin and Robin
- 26:19looks in it. Then he starts swinging his
- 26:21sword as if they're right in front of them.
- 26:22Yeah. And Azim pokes a little bit of
- 26:24fun at him because he's an idiot.
- 26:26He's Tom. Exactly.
- 26:28I'm not sure what year it was invented, so maybe there's
- 26:30justification to be calling him an idiot.
- 26:33My note is funny, but a tone problem.
- 26:36Like I was like, does the movie have a tone problem now?
- 26:39And I don't think it does as the rest of the movie goes.
- 26:41But a couple of these jokes I have come at times where I'm
- 26:44thinking, where's the drama? It's it's a challenge because my
- 26:48memory is, I think if you'd asked me would be an A
- 26:50rollicking action movie with some romance thrown in because I
- 26:53know that song so well. Yes, of course.
- 26:55And then I think that. 'D be would be fair for someone
- 26:57to say. When I watched it, started to
- 27:00watch it, I would think drama and less action than I
- 27:06remembered, but then the humor I had no memory of.
- 27:11None of the jokes stuck out all these years later.
- 27:13Yeah, you didn't get it. So now I was like, OK, well, is
- 27:15the drama being undercut by this kind of mediocre comedy?
- 27:18So something like this, where we've watched people die, lose
- 27:23their hands, fight, kill. Let's Dad's dead.
- 27:26Let's lighten the mood. I guess, but it just feels
- 27:28totally a little off. OK, but well, I thought it was
- 27:32kind of funny still. OK, well, I'm glad it didn't
- 27:34take you all the way out. We got you right back in because
- 27:37we are on. The way the forest.
- 27:40That's right, right? Yep.
- 27:41Sherwood Forest. Sherwood Forest.
- 27:43For those who don't know the name, love the Sherwood Forest
- 27:46playset. Yeah.
- 27:47Did you have it? You didn't.
- 27:48Have it that didn't have it. But I love watching the
- 27:49commercial forest. This is great.
- 27:51And actually, in watching this movie, I'm thinking this would
- 27:53make a great toy. Yeah, it's a great stage, a
- 27:56great set. Sorry, it's unavailable on
- 27:58Amazon. Who knows?
- 27:59Sure. Everyone's afraid to go into
- 28:01this Sherwood Forest, but that's really their only option because
- 28:05we got, we got a wounded horse, a blind guy.
- 28:08Yeah. And they're being chase.
- 28:10Yep. So they're going to go in.
- 28:12They're going into the forest. Going in, going in deep.
- 28:15And it's. Dangerous, is it?
- 28:17And there's nothing more dangerous than Christian Slater.
- 28:20Well, I mean, it was my birthday recently, as I mentioned, so I
- 28:23got to watch Star Trek 6 was my choice.
- 28:26Nice. Nice.
- 28:27Christian Slater in that, Yeah. We talked about it available in
- 28:29the archives. Yeah, yeah, it's nice little
- 28:31tree. Shows up in The West Wing as
- 28:33well randomly in season 3 I think.
- 28:35Yeah. Who knows why had him in
- 28:36Windtalker where he he loses his head.
- 28:39Yes, he literally. Yeah, he does.
- 28:40That's great. Literally, yeah.
- 28:42He sucks. He sucks.
- 28:44I like I I love Broken Arrow. Pump up the volume, OK, Like I
- 28:48fucking love pump up the volume. OK.
- 28:51I I would love to see that movie again.
- 28:53No. One's stopping you.
- 28:55But I pump up, the volume is amazing and he's great in it.
- 28:58What year did that come out? Probably the same 94934
- 29:01somewhere in that region. Yeah, he was.
- 29:04He was a thing. He's.
- 29:05A. A thing.
- 29:06He was a thing. He was in mobster, he was in a
- 29:07movie called Untamed Heart, which the original working title
- 29:11of it was Baboon Heart. Would you go see a movie called
- 29:14Baboon Heart? No, I mean, you can't get me in
- 29:17the theater. That's.
- 29:18True, you know, can't even see something you want to see, so
- 29:20that's fair. That's fair.
- 29:21Nonetheless, he is the first guy I think we see.
- 29:24Yeah. Drips him.
- 29:25Yeah, Does he does drip? Him tells a tail does a joke.
- 29:27Oh yeah, he I wrote down. He can.
- 29:29He can rhyme. Yes, he falls in the river and
- 29:31now watch him shiver. Yeah, that's good.
- 29:33Clever there. We go now and then we have
- 29:36Little John. Yes, and I assumed it was a.
- 29:38Penis thing, of course, but you're a sicko.
- 29:43But only assume. Yeah, this Sherwood Forest scene
- 29:46again, I just remembered it being more so if trips right
- 29:49away and then he gets his ass kicked for the next 7 minutes. 3
- 29:53minutes. TA.
- 29:54And he wins basically one of these battles, if you can call
- 29:59it that. Yeah, if it was the best of
- 30:00three, he's not winning. I don't know what.
- 30:02And all of a sudden it's like, OK, well, you beat me once.
- 30:05Yeah. Little John loses one time.
- 30:07Exactly. He has to.
- 30:08And he's got a yield. He gives the thing back.
- 30:10He's he's now I. Just want your name.
- 30:12Right, like I was like, this is not and the action sequence it
- 30:16again, it's 1991 and come on, I'll give a little bit of
- 30:19credit, but this is a see, this is post die hard post predator.
- 30:24I think, I guess that man, the budget mostly went to Bryan
- 30:26Adams. Let's be let's be honest,
- 30:28between Kevin and Brian, not a whole lot of bread left.
- 30:32I guess. OK, yeah.
- 30:34Anyway, I just, I, I like the introduction of, of the sort of
- 30:37merry men, as it were. I just felt let down a little
- 30:40bit by that and the joke of do yield, do yield.
- 30:44And he's like, I can't swim. And he's like, well, now you can
- 30:47stand up cuz he was, it's like 2 feet of like water.
- 30:50I think that. It's a weak.
- 30:53It's a weak. Scene What are we doing?
- 30:54Is he? What are we doing here?
- 30:56Well, John, yeah, like you see that he's not.
- 30:58I get the impression this group of people maybe didn't go to.
- 31:00School, I'm very smart, but at the same time, water, I mean the
- 31:03ground, you know, I just feel like you've got some sense of.
- 31:06You would think they wouldn't be, maybe smart speaking wise,
- 31:09but they're resourceful because they're in a situation where you
- 31:12have to survive. So I'm saying if I'm standing
- 31:14next to you and you're standing in the water next to me and
- 31:19sometimes and it goes up to your knee, I think on the balance of
- 31:23probabilities I could probably stand up in the water next to
- 31:28you and have the water go up to my knee.
- 31:30When people are in water, the problem that occurs is a panic.
- 31:34Yeah, Little John is panicking, sure, and I think he should be a
- 31:37little more sensitive towards water panic.
- 31:49They're all buddies now, yes. Oh, that's Will Scarlett.
- 31:52Don't mind him. Yeah, he's just your
- 31:56run-of-the-mill pup. Whelp.
- 31:58And I do want to back you up on the fact that Robin Hood, played
- 32:02by the great Kevin Costner, is a man of honor and all those good
- 32:06things because they're sharing a beverage, I believe.
- 32:10Mead. Mead.
- 32:11Is that what it is? That's beer, basically.
- 32:13OK, OK, OK. And they weren't including
- 32:16Morgan Freeman. As he's a Moore, he's a I don't
- 32:19like him, I don't like him. He's a savage.
- 32:21He's a painted man, they say. Yeah.
- 32:23And then Robin's like we're all savages.
- 32:26All right, Yeah, take a minute. Aren't we all really think about
- 32:30it? Yeah, but.
- 32:31Azim is Muslim and he will not drink.
- 32:33So that's they they stay true to that.
- 32:34So that is a moment. So you.
- 32:36Know they got the East and they got the drinking part.
- 32:38So Cassie Morgan Freeman as a Muslim I think is.
- 32:42They've done all research here. No, I wouldn't say they're all
- 32:45buddy buddy, but he's somewhat, you know.
- 32:48Well, Costner is definitely a buddy buddy at this point.
- 32:50Yeah, well, he is. He wants some and a friend of
- 32:52his. He's got to be a friend of
- 32:54yours. That's right.
- 32:55And nobody likes him later too, right?
- 32:57The the Friar has an issue with him.
- 32:59Nobody wants him around. Duncan doesn't want him around.
- 33:01Can't even see him. Can't even see him.
- 33:02Doesn't want him. Come on, what a Dick.
- 33:06It's rough news. Phil, how much you think you're
- 33:09worth, dead or alive? Well, you know, having just.
- 33:11In terms of. Gold.
- 33:12A couple of silver pieces. I don't know if even worth of
- 33:16gold. Well, Robin's worth 100 gold.
- 33:19Pieces. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:20It's not nothing. It's.
- 33:21Not nothing. I don't know the conversion, I
- 33:24don't know what's worth what back then.
- 33:26Seems probably like a fair amount.
- 33:27He seems less than impressed by that.
- 33:29He wants more. He thinks he's worth more.
- 33:32At least 150. That's right.
- 33:33Around this time that he discovers this, he runs into old
- 33:37Sheriff of Naudingham. Yeah.
- 33:39And gives him a nice little slice on the face.
- 33:41Yeah, kind of a little abrupt. And we're getting to called.
- 33:44For if you ask me. Who knows what?
- 33:46Well, I guess he did kill his dad.
- 33:48Yeah, but like, you know, they prove it, though.
- 33:53Yeah, there's obviously a reason for for it.
- 33:55So he carves him out on his face.
- 33:57This scene, however, has my least favorite line.
- 33:59I know we like to play this game.
- 34:01You do. I do.
- 34:02You don't participate. There's a moment where he slices
- 34:05his face. He goes to escape and he talks.
- 34:09Nottingham is yelling to carve out his heart with a spoon.
- 34:13And then Costner looks down from his escape hatch and says.
- 34:17Then it begins, doesn't it though?
- 34:19And runs away. And I just thought, what does
- 34:21that mean? Then it begins.
- 34:23It begins. What begins?
- 34:25Begins the. You know the.
- 34:26Begins the beginning. Back and forth.
- 34:28There's going to be, you know. Yeah, I get it.
- 34:30It's fine. It's just it's a poorly written,
- 34:32poorly delivered line that sticks out to me like a sore
- 34:35thumb. I don't like it either.
- 34:36So I was like, then it begins. Just feels out of place, doesn't
- 34:39fit to me. I want to like it because you
- 34:41don't. Sure, that's good.
- 34:43But reason? But I don't.
- 34:44I don't I love it, but it does. Begin.
- 34:46Yes. And what does begin?
- 34:48This is a montage. It's time for the montage.
- 34:51One of my favorites. And then I think now we're
- 34:53getting sort of to the point of the movie where like, OK, my
- 34:57memory is coming back to why I like this.
- 34:59This is the scenes I remember and you get excited about these
- 35:03types of scenes and I can't, I don't know what the word is for
- 35:06it, but the memories of certain movies and certain scenes.
- 35:09This is in a category. There are certain scenes that
- 35:12are in that, sure. And it is montage related I
- 35:16think. Easier to remember.
- 35:18There's kind of, there isn't a real good musical cue to this.
- 35:22I don't remember. Like it didn't stick out to
- 35:23being. It's good score all around,
- 35:25don't be wrong, but I think about something like the Rocky
- 35:27movies. Those montages have really
- 35:29rousing songs, heavy on the yeah, yeah, this one, it doesn't
- 35:34stick out, but it is a great montage.
- 35:36It absolutely. We get some weapon making on the
- 35:39side of the forest people. Yep.
- 35:42A little bit like my Swiss Family Robinson, also available.
- 35:45In the I've been thinking about that movie for the last 35
- 35:47seconds, buddy. Do you remember the music in
- 35:50that? No, I don't.
- 35:51No, that's what I do remember the excitement of prepping for
- 35:54the that was that's that's epic and that's that that movie is in
- 35:58that same category where forget about the rest of the movie, but
- 36:00that. One scene.
- 36:01Yeah, yeah, fantastic. Yeah.
- 36:02They're training them all to kind of fight.
- 36:04They're doing different styles, different weapons.
- 36:07They're not very good. Well, they're get there.
- 36:09They're Ragtag Bunch. They're Ragtag Bunch.
- 36:11I'm not. Saying they're not going to get
- 36:12there. I'm saying at this point they're
- 36:13not there. They're not there.
- 36:14They barely started. Give them a break and you think
- 36:17they would be, you know, their survival.
- 36:19Well, they've been they already are doing the the bow staff
- 36:22fighting on the river with Robin, and now somehow they're
- 36:25all dumb. I don't know how long.
- 36:28Have they been in this? Forest for that's what I want to
- 36:29know. You can't just just do it.
- 36:32Now here's a thing that really sticks out from this because it
- 36:36is the trailer moment. It's the it's the commercial for
- 36:39the for the Burger King combo. It's the commercial for the
- 36:44toys. It's the CGI arrow which in
- 36:50yeah, it's on the cover. Isn't it?
- 36:51It's. Well that's later OK, but but
- 36:54that CGI moment is iconic for this.
- 36:59I think it looks great. It held up.
- 37:02You know, like it looks a little bit painted like, you know,
- 37:04whatever, it's fine, but it works.
- 37:06I think it's, I think it's still a pretty cool moment all things
- 37:09considered. If you don't, if you're not
- 37:10noticing it and you're not making excuses for it.
- 37:13Like it's 91. I think it's a success.
- 37:16It helps that it's small. Yeah, that's what she said.
- 37:19It helps you. More or less I feel like we have
- 37:23here in the next, like, you know, a few scenes is kind of a
- 37:26power struggle between the the forest people, if I can call
- 37:30them that. Sure.
- 37:31And merry men. Yeah, the merry men and the
- 37:33sheriff's men. Yep, sure.
- 37:35And his cousin. Yeah.
- 37:36So you hit us, we'll hit you back sort of thing.
- 37:38And that's really what we have for the next few scenes.
- 37:41One of the biggest parts of that scene physically as well as a
- 37:46Friar Tuck. That's right, coming on the
- 37:48heels of taking money from other right the Robin Hood robbing.
- 37:53People and. The Friar situation, what are
- 37:55your thoughts on that? Well, you know, he's hard
- 37:57headed. Yeah, Friar Tuck is.
- 37:59He just didn't want to. And he's hungry.
- 38:02A bit of a drinker. I get the impression that he has
- 38:05a bit of a problem, perhaps that he is literally on the wagon.
- 38:09Yeah, I don't know which one off the wagon or on the wagon, but
- 38:11he's definitely on the wagon. Yes, on the wagon would be
- 38:14sober, yeah. So he's off the wagon.
- 38:15He's. On the wagon while driving the
- 38:17wagon. But nonetheless, do you like him
- 38:20as a character? No, OK.
- 38:22I think as an actor, if you remember, he is in Office Space.
- 38:27Yeah. Yeah, OK, he's the hypnotist.
- 38:29OK, He is pretending to remember.
- 38:32Also, in Whose Line Is It Anyway?
- 38:35TV guy, He's all. Over Oh my God, yes, I I watched
- 38:39that show religiously. The original British version, if
- 38:43you recall that had styles and and mockery, of course, but the
- 38:46British host before Carrie and he appeared yes, so good.
- 38:50I'm impressed. That's TV, buddy.
- 38:53Thought you might be that's TV, but yeah, I think the character
- 38:55just over the top silly drunken guy again tonally doesn't seem
- 38:58to fit. I connected, yeah, not bad, just
- 39:03like it. It just anything that was.
- 39:05That's him. That's what.
- 39:06Is there a character? I think it was already always
- 39:08known as that. I think I.
- 39:09Don't know that I know the cartoon of the story.
- 39:11But you're not. Eh, the only other Robin Hood I
- 39:14may have ever watched is the Disney version.
- 39:17There probably wasn't a drunk version of the Friar in the
- 39:19Russell Crowe. Never saw it, no.
- 39:21I have no interest in the Robin Hood myth, really.
- 39:23The Robin Hood story is not one that's been exciting to me.
- 39:26Why we're on it, though. The Russell Crowe movie, which
- 39:28you know from the video store, though, because it's on the
- 39:31wall. Yes, absolutely.
- 39:32In that in that time that we work together, it's one of those
- 39:35movies that I want so badly to be good.
- 39:38Yeah. And I've watched it.
- 39:40I own it on 4K and it's just not good.
- 39:44But I, I'm not going to anytime soon because we're doing this.
- 39:47But I still, I'm holding out hope that there is a good movie
- 39:50in there. But if you haven't seen it,
- 39:52don't. Yeah, it's another one of those
- 39:54Ridley Scott movies that I just and Russell Crowe combination
- 39:56and I had no interest in it. Yeah, and I'm not the, you know,
- 40:00I'm not a huge Woodley Scott fan.
- 40:01Like I wouldn't see everything he does.
- 40:03You would think that would be, but translated been enough, but
- 40:05it's not. It was not.
- 40:07No. I didn't really have any
- 40:08interest in it at the time and don't really have much right
- 40:10now. 6 at best. That's your sweet spot.
- 40:13Yeah, another character we went on record saying isn't very good
- 40:16and really should watch his six. Yeah, Is the cousin.
- 40:20Yeah, because he lost all that gold.
- 40:22All of it, he just he's so dejected when he's talking to
- 40:25the to to sheriff of we lost all the men, we lost all the horses,
- 40:30we lost all the like this guy is like the worst bot.
- 40:34And the good news is Rickman as the sheriff doesn't he's out,
- 40:38he's done and stabs him and cold blood, old blood, and then says
- 40:44one of my favorite lines, at least it wasn't a spoon, which
- 40:47he had questioned him earlier. Why a spoon?
- 40:49Because it would hurt a lot. Now, generally speaking,
- 40:52Rickman, we're going to get into a little bit more as we go.
- 40:54But we haven't done him. Justice yet?
- 40:56No. So let's take a moment, please.
- 40:58And he plays Hans Gruber with such, to me, sophistication.
- 41:04Yeah, he's a very sophisticated terrorist and here.
- 41:07He is so over the top. Do you enjoy his performance in
- 41:12this movie? Not comparing it, I just mean in
- 41:14general. Yeah, no, I mean, you have to
- 41:16compare, Phil. You got to compare a little.
- 41:17Bit of comparison you have. To I think he plays a bad guy
- 41:22really well. Generally, sure.
- 41:25I think I enjoyed him more as Hans Gruber, though.
- 41:28If I had to pick, you didn't say I had to pick, but I'm going to
- 41:30pick. Yeah, he's gross in this movie.
- 41:32He's a very gross person. A little.
- 41:34Greasy. Yeah, like I remember thinking
- 41:38again, much like when Michael Wincott in this movie that the
- 41:41sheriff is the best. I thought Michael Wincott as Guy
- 41:45his cousin was like creepy and dangerous.
- 41:48He's creepy. Now and I'm like, just creepy,
- 41:51like a nothing. And then I remember thinking
- 41:53Rickman is so good in this movie, like my memories, just
- 41:56like the best. Just also very just creepy.
- 41:59Yeah, sure, absolutely. And then I'm watching it.
- 42:02I'm just thinking like, his deliveries are so big.
- 42:05I was like, I don't know if I love this performance.
- 42:09I like it. It's good, but it's like to it's
- 42:12to a degree that I was like, well, I just wasn't expecting so
- 42:16animated because I write like big face, big voice, big action,
- 42:22big moves. It's a much bigger performance
- 42:25than I thought it was. Theatre guy.
- 42:27He's a theatre guy. Sure.
- 42:29Yeah. I, I again, I don't think it's,
- 42:30I'm not making excuses. No, I don't think it's wrong.
- 42:32I'm just I'm surprised that. Yeah, how different it is than
- 42:36what it was in my mind. Yeah, OK.
- 42:38He's exactly mostly how I remember him.
- 42:40So he's right on par 100%. So I don't know what's going on
- 42:44with you. Different memories, but what's
- 42:47going on with Robin? Is have a shower.
- 42:50I know you. I know you like a shower over a
- 42:52bath. Yes, absolutely.
- 42:54Now Marian kindly asked him in a few scenes before.
- 42:57Take a bath. Take a bath.
- 42:58So he's doing her the favor. He's not.
- 43:00He's more of a shower. Most of I guess it's a hybrid
- 43:03because he's in the water and he's water is coming from above.
- 43:06So it's cut your cut your loss to get all the best of both
- 43:09worlds there. I remember.
- 43:11It was a very avid watcher of Entertainment Tonight.
- 43:14John Tesh, of course. Mary Hart.
- 43:17And there was a segment all about Kevin Costner's butt in
- 43:21this movie. Like it was.
- 43:22Such news in the entertainment world that it was like vaguely
- 43:25remembered. Watch out for this movie because
- 43:27it's got a chance to see his butt.
- 43:29Lisa is sicko, maybe John too. Anyway, and so that that this
- 43:35scene when I watched, I was like, I know for some reason it
- 43:38didn't. I didn't remember the movie
- 43:39part. I remember the Entertainment
- 43:41Tonight part of it. Well, what I know is John Chesh
- 43:44plays a lovely piano. Yeah, very talented man.
- 43:47Very host a radio show too. And at this point in the movie,
- 43:50we also have Marian who's they're they're flirting a
- 43:54little bit. Things are developing a little
- 43:55bit. But this is the point where she
- 43:57calls him the Prince of thieves. Yes, which is the name of the
- 44:00movie and you have stated in previous episodes that you don't
- 44:06always like it. Most of the time I don't.
- 44:09And this is no different. No, and I also kind of a note
- 44:12like wow, Marian's back in the movie because it feels like
- 44:14she's just disappeared for such a long time and all that she's
- 44:19given to do once again is just be the love interest.
- 44:21She shows up at this great set right the forest, she's sewing
- 44:25her around, beautiful set, gorgeous sunset.
- 44:28Like everything looks amazing, but she's still just his
- 44:31girlfriend didn't like there's no real, I don't.
- 44:33Think they're dating at this? Point No, that's the thing.
- 44:35Like she just has no real role here.
- 44:37Even when he says, you know, I can't let you go and she's like,
- 44:41I was blindfolded, Ha ha, I got one up.
- 44:43I don't really feel like she has any power agency in the thing.
- 44:46And even when she tries to go away, he's like, here, Duncan,
- 44:49take her home. I love that part of this man of
- 44:52purpose. Sure, I like the idea of it.
- 44:54That's. What I'm talking about, that's
- 44:57Robin being in. Sure, stand out.
- 44:59I appreciate it. But at the same time, I think of
- 45:03your lack of appreciation of letting critical bill be a part
- 45:11of the the the job in the action and let that one go in things to
- 45:17do in Denver when you're dead available in the archives to
- 45:19catch you up folks. And that to me, if Duncan is
- 45:22saying, hey, give me purpose, put me in coach, I don't know if
- 45:26here, let's go, I'll put you in charge of protecting the the
- 45:30Princess or whatever here. The Maid Marian on her way back
- 45:33to the castle. Of interest, is this the guy?
- 45:36Is this the right call? Not the right call, but let me
- 45:40tell you how clear I want to say two things.
- 45:42First thing, I think it's really funny when Robin asks him what
- 45:46day it is. How the fuck does he know what
- 45:48day it is? He can't even.
- 45:49See, it's Tuesday. Let me check the watch.
- 45:51Yeah, like this guy's blind. You're asking him what day it
- 45:53is. I think that's funny.
- 45:54That was at some point in the movie.
- 45:56But also I he's just giving him the purpose.
- 45:59There's other people there to actually do it.
- 46:01No, I think there is no. Look, Look again.
- 46:04Check the tape. Check the tape.
- 46:05There's two other guys I go with.
- 46:06Sure. Yeah.
- 46:07Pieces. And yeah.
- 46:10Lloyd touché, though at least Robin didn't have him perform
- 46:15the birth. That's right.
- 46:18Duncan, help this woman out. We have little John's wife.
- 46:22Yeah, her name is. Joanne, OK.
- 46:26Joanne Little. Sure.
- 46:28This is little and there could be some complications and that's
- 46:32it's 1192, we don't have the technology.
- 46:34No, luckily we've got Azeem. Azeem.
- 46:38Yeah, and. I delivered a few horses.
- 46:40He's taking care of business. Yeah, not.
- 46:42Too many people want him in. Charge of this little show.
- 46:44The fryer wants nothing to do with it or not, but I think.
- 46:48She's hip. She's woke.
- 46:49Yes. And in modern lady, yeah.
- 46:53And in pain. It doesn't matter who saves her
- 46:55life, just somebody better do it.
- 46:56It's actually kind of funny because she is sort of a modern
- 46:59lady. If you see throughout the rest
- 47:00of the movie, she kind of takes a she's more than him than
- 47:04Little John. Yeah, she's stronger in the
- 47:06movie than Maid Marian is, and that did Maid Marian isn't
- 47:09supposed to be. I think by comparison of the way
- 47:11she was introduced, it's a let down.
- 47:13If she was, if she was this the whole way, then it wouldn't
- 47:15matter. She's the love interest, that's
- 47:17her station, That's fine. But she's introduced in such a
- 47:19cool, fun way that to abandon it feels like a waste.
- 47:23Clearly upset about it, but that's we're going to have to
- 47:25work through it together. Marion's a very trusting woman
- 47:28though. Also, let's touch on that
- 47:30briefly. And I think she has the right to
- 47:32be, because would you trust a priest?
- 47:34I mean, in 1192, maybe 1192 actually makes more sense or
- 47:39less. Yeah, I think you didn't know
- 47:42the things that we know now in 1192.
- 47:44Anyway, he she's trying to get a letter to her dad, I think, or
- 47:47Uncle King Richard. King Richard, the related
- 47:50cousin, actually cousins something.
- 47:52Sorry, I know, I know, I know. I'm with it.
- 47:55But the priest, he's dirty. He's dirty.
- 47:57He wouldn't have anticipated. Yeah.
- 47:59And then he you don't know, but he rats her out.
- 48:01Yeah, he totally, totally. And he clubs the her, the maid
- 48:06clubs from behind. Clubbing.
- 48:08Yeah. And we never see her again,
- 48:11basically. But to Duncan's credit, jumps on
- 48:14that horse and finds his way back to the forest.
- 48:16Yep. Maybe you got to give a little
- 48:17more credit to the horse. Sure.
- 48:18A little bit of credit there. I will say that it did not a
- 48:21good service because he lured everybody back.
- 48:25Did but it does give us a pretty good action scene which I know
- 48:29you're itching for this is the the the the one action scene in
- 48:33the movie that I think is actually well staged and well
- 48:36pretty effective yeah it's a lot of it's actually in this movie
- 48:39does come in the last chapter of the movie that's being sort of
- 48:42the beginning out of it so we have the attack on the forest
- 48:45and we have arrows with fire yeah just.
- 48:50Well described. Yes, Yes.
- 48:51It's your bearer for detail. Yeah.
- 48:54I think that the the scene is, it's hectic.
- 48:56It's a lot of it's well shot. It's interesting.
- 48:59I thought it's entertaining and it's exciting.
- 49:01And there is a lot of flames, as you're saying, the rope, they're
- 49:05trying to save the baby. You know, kind of this very big.
- 49:07It's like the biggest sort of action scene that we've seen so
- 49:10far. And it ends with my favorite
- 49:13shot of the movie where there's like the smoke and mist.
- 49:16They've won and he kind of rises and they see this like a real
- 49:20hero shot right behind. He's got like my liars to me
- 49:24coming up. That's right.
- 49:26But I thought that was like a really beautifully well in the
- 49:29music state. And again, music just hits on
- 49:32point. It's like my favorite 20 minutes
- 49:35of the movie. All right, so this action
- 49:36sequence finishes strong according to Phil and I would
- 49:40happily agree with you. Let's give some more love to
- 49:49Slater's character, though, Will Scarlett.
- 49:52He's captured but then released because he's a bit of a
- 49:55turncoat, which is not the term I used.
- 49:57Sheriff used it a little bit later in the movie, but we have
- 50:00a scene where we find out the brother.
- 50:03Yeah, I hate this. I knew you would.
- 50:06What I don't like about it, maybe what I enjoyed, maybe when
- 50:09I was younger, because I didn't know.
- 50:10And I was like, Oh my God. But he's insufferable from the
- 50:13minute we meet him. And he's so antagonistic to the
- 50:17troublemaker Robin that I'm glad.
- 50:18And at some point, Robin asks him, Did I wrong you like in
- 50:22another life? Like I don't know who the fuck
- 50:24you are. He did in this life actually,
- 50:26and you're. You're throwing such garbage my
- 50:28way. What is up?
- 50:29Yeah, what's the dealio? And he finally kind of admits
- 50:32that he's his brother. And it's a scene that I think
- 50:36falls really flat. I don't know where you're at
- 50:37with it, but. Exactly what I remembered it.
- 50:40Wants it to be the music, the thing.
- 50:42It's like I will be your brother, I will stand with you
- 50:44like all this stuff, but it's it's, I don't think it.
- 50:49Delivers. Personally, I never did the
- 50:50first time I watched it still doesn't deliver, but it's not
- 50:52like terrible. But I what I did notice this
- 50:55time watching it is I put the pieces together this time from a
- 51:00dialogue from the beginning of the movie about his father and
- 51:03his mom and the and the mistress.
- 51:06I never kind of clued in. It didn't matter.
- 51:08It didn't matter throw away line back then, right?
- 51:11But. It kind of like, OK, now I
- 51:12understand how you could be with the brothers.
- 51:14So OK, so that was a a small victory, but to an overall
- 51:20lacklusting moment. Speaking of relationships and
- 51:25brothers and mothers. And relatives you didn't know
- 51:28you had. Yes, it's a good show.
- 51:30By the way, we have another scene with the witch.
- 51:33Yes, he's popped up a couple times, but this is a.
- 51:36The bigger one. Things are happening here.
- 51:38Yeah, Rickman is really upset, yeah, that she's been spying on
- 51:43him. Yeah, that's yeah.
- 51:44Which is weird. Sure.
- 51:45Yeah. And then we somehow find out
- 51:48that she's his mother. Yeah.
- 51:49I don't remember that the first me neither time I watched it.
- 51:53And I don't know, we're just coming off the whole brother
- 51:55thing again. Like, why?
- 51:56It's just. It's.
- 51:57That's a very good point. I don't.
- 51:58Really see as being necessary that they're.
- 52:01No, they could just be. That relationship could live as
- 52:03it is. Just makes his day worse.
- 52:05Yeah, it all the the only thing that it it does it it delivers.
- 52:10Probably my favorite line in the movie.
- 52:12Oh, here we go. Which is when she says something
- 52:17to the effect of you hate me, you are me because he's trying
- 52:21to dismiss her like you, you lied to me, You do this, you
- 52:23know, whatever. Else this is the kind of a.
- 52:25Common thing. I like the idea behind it.
- 52:27I just think it's again, it's just too late.
- 52:29It's handled poorly. We're on attack on situation.
- 52:31Yeah, I'm fine with this point, which not being his mother and
- 52:34still wanting the throne or like still wanting to be a part of it
- 52:38or establish it earlier, it just falls really flat at this point
- 52:41of the movie. I have a whole box of tacks at
- 52:43home. Let me tell you, I'm not doing a
- 52:46late in the day. If I'm doing any tacking, I'm
- 52:48doing it early on in the day. The good news though, after all
- 52:51these, all this fighting, I don't like fighting.
- 52:53Film a peaceful man. But we have a wedding coming
- 52:55out, that's true. Yeah, nothing more celebratory,
- 52:58Joyous. Yeah.
- 53:01What's best to do at a wedding, of course, is get ready for a
- 53:03fight. Yeah, absolutely.
- 53:04You can watch everybody. They're sharpening their sticks
- 53:07and they're setting themselves up.
- 53:09They've got the hoods, the cloaks.
- 53:10Everyone's kind of gathering for this moment.
- 53:13They know that the sheriff's going to be there and be able to
- 53:16enact some revenge. Yeah, this is the big scene.
- 53:19This is the the big scene, absolutely.
- 53:21The big scenes bigger than the the forest fight.
- 53:25Smaller in scope. Smaller in scope but bigger in
- 53:29plot, yes. It's the end of the movie.
- 53:31Yeah, right. So like the things have to
- 53:33culminate here, but I think I prefer the middle one, really.
- 53:37The last one, yeah, far more. I don't think this is another
- 53:39one. I have a bigger problem with
- 53:40this in terms of geography and no checks out where it all is
- 53:44and like how it all kind of gets played out.
- 53:46I found this one to be not jarring, just uninteresting.
- 53:49I I'm. Going to meet you halfway,
- 53:51Phillip is I? I always thought this one,
- 53:54They'll come, one we're coming up on was the bread and butter
- 53:57of this movie. OK, this is big.
- 53:58But it's not as big as I remember.
- 54:00Yeah, that's the thing. I just, it's small in scope.
- 54:02That's in my view. Yeah, I remember being super
- 54:04cool, you know, neat. The arrows happening.
- 54:07Yeah, I thought there would be more to it.
- 54:08It it does have the cool shot of the arrow breaking the rope of
- 54:11the hanged kid. Robin Hood as a man of
- 54:14precision, yes. When he shoots it, it swings
- 54:17back and forth a couple of times.
- 54:19So it's just bullshit luck, really.
- 54:22The rope does swings back. And so when he makes his shot,
- 54:24he's basing it on there's the rope.
- 54:26He's anticipating the he's anticipating Moses smell the
- 54:30roses, checking the checking the wind.
- 54:32Oh, yeah, yeah, I could stand. Well, yeah, he says.
- 54:34Finger up like his finger. You don't know.
- 54:37I still like it. I still like it.
- 54:39Sure, clear about that. It's really annoying though when
- 54:42something happens is like, it irks you, but it has to happen
- 54:44and that's Christian Slater's character.
- 54:46And the kid, the kid, yeah. And trying to say like, no, it's
- 54:50fine, it's fine. But the kid, rightfully so, he's
- 54:53got, he's got, he's got a bone to pick.
- 54:55Absolutely. He's got to pick that bone there
- 54:56to be picked. And he needs to pick it has to
- 54:58pick it, but it does it caused some problems.
- 55:01It anti climax I guess. Sure.
- 55:03That's part of the movie formulation.
- 55:05You mentioned that you don't like the geography.
- 55:07I actually got the blueprints online for it.
- 55:09It all checks out. But how do you like all the
- 55:13pieces falling into play with Little John, his wife Azeem
- 55:19Slater, all that I like. The scene generally, I think
- 55:22that it has the scene, you know, from the poster, it's got the
- 55:25hero shot again, flaming rope trying to save Christian's head.
- 55:29So I thought I like the scene overall.
- 55:31It's just not as great explosion.
- 55:33It's just not as impactful. It's got explosion, it's got a
- 55:36bunch of stuff. It's just not as impactful or as
- 55:38viscerally interesting as the earlier one.
- 55:42But this is perfectly fine. I like the energy of it.
- 55:44I like the way it plays out and the way everybody kind of has
- 55:46their their spot. I like that they take the the
- 55:49catapult over the. And they get to use their one
- 55:53swear word, which I think you're the one that told me you're
- 55:56loud. One for PG rating.
- 55:57You remember what he says. You tell me.
- 56:00Why don't you're the one that swears on the show?
- 56:01Yeah, but have you noticed? I want you to do it a little
- 56:03more often, You know, get on board, get your head in the
- 56:05game. All right, Well, he says you're
- 56:07loud. 1 David. I think he says fuck me, he
- 56:12cleared it. Yep, that's the one.
- 56:14And actually, I know that he probably did not get nominated
- 56:18for an Oscar for best supporting actor.
- 56:19Christian Slater in this movie, probably not.
- 56:21But that he did deliver that line.
- 56:24Pretty cool. He's not like the worst actor.
- 56:26He's just not a, you know, a guy that really does much for me.
- 56:28Like, he's just sort of there. He's like his fame exceeds his
- 56:32talent. That is, that's a very good way
- 56:34of putting it. Fill up.
- 56:35And then we have the square off between the two men of cloth.
- 56:40Yes, yes, yes, yes. Now, what are your thoughts on
- 56:43the Friar murdering somebody in the church?
- 56:46It's as a as a, as a holy man yourself.
- 56:49Yes, very holy. I remember the line he says when
- 56:53he pushes him out the window and it wasn't as good as I remember.
- 56:56I thought it was even better, yeah.
- 57:01Yeah, I mean the greater good. You know, he doesn't know he's
- 57:04going to die. You know, it could be like some
- 57:06hay. Bottom of gives him lots of
- 57:10weight. He does for the water.
- 57:11So he's well weighted. Well weighted, yeah.
- 57:14Yeah. Well, I think we know that the
- 57:15fryer Tuck is, you know, he's tenuous.
- 57:19He's got a little tenuous relationship with the holy.
- 57:22Yeah, yeah, I am more interested in Azeem's confrontation with
- 57:27the witch. Yeah, well, you know, they're
- 57:29gonna. They both have had this
- 57:30premonition. They both know they're.
- 57:33On the on the different ends of the spectrum.
- 57:35What would you say? Yep.
- 57:36And I get the impression when I'm first watching it, the first
- 57:39the first time I watched it, I should say that they kind of
- 57:41killed each other. One stabs and one stabs.
- 57:43But they don't. No, no, He he's fine.
- 57:46She. Not so much.
- 57:46Not so much. She's flourishing.
- 57:48Yeah. As we speak, he went on to have
- 57:51a long, long career after this. One yes, that's right, he did
- 57:54OK. She never heard from again.
- 57:55Yeah, no, this movie, there's no way that they would have killed
- 57:58that character. No, not in the car.
- 58:00In the movie too, but I feel like he he could have it would
- 58:02have made sense legitimately. Here is, I would say, probably
- 58:06my biggest complaint to the movie.
- 58:08Biggest complaint? You've had a lot?
- 58:09Yes, actually, you haven't had a lot for a movie we both claim to
- 58:12like, really like when we were young.
- 58:13There's probably been a couple more complaints than we maybe
- 58:16would have. Totally.
- 58:17I'm I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, but at the end of the
- 58:19day it less than what I kind of hoped and wanted it to be.
- 58:23Tired three situation. And this I would say is one of
- 58:27the movies like kind of fatal flaws is.
- 58:30Interesting, I find. What did I miss?
- 58:32The I find that the culmination of the Sheriff and Robin story
- 58:39and the fight sequence that kind of happens by it to be kind of
- 58:43terrible and uninteresting. Their final duel on dynamic,
- 58:48it's like watching the going back to your reference, Star
- 58:52Wars Kenobi and Darth fight one another.
- 58:56You know it has to happen. There's portent in there and
- 58:59it's like important to the story, but it's not interesting.
- 59:02That is not an interesting fight.
- 59:03A fan made it interesting though.
- 59:05I know if you've seen it. I have not.
- 59:06It's impressive. Okay, but you're right.
- 59:08The original, yeah. And I'm not a person that needs
- 59:10the thing like what happened later, which is that obnoxious
- 59:13and silly CGI Yoda just flipping around like, and flopping pure
- 59:19CG. Like, no, no, he's embarrassing
- 59:22himself. It's ridiculous.
- 59:23So like, I'm not looking for that.
- 59:24No, I know, but this well choreographed is what you're
- 59:26looking. For yeah, or just a little bit
- 59:28more energy to it, but it feels like these two they're tired are
- 59:31doing. A long day.
- 59:33It's like heavy sword work. So you're you're heavy.
- 59:35It's not like. Those lightsabers are pretty
- 59:37light, yeah. It's like they're called light.
- 59:40So anyway, I just thought this whole sequence he's trying to
- 59:44get married, you know, you know, hurry up, pronounce this man and
- 59:47wife this and that. I just.
- 59:48Want to be funny? Totally.
- 59:49I think it rushes the the like. I just thought if this movie is
- 59:53culminating and leading up to this battle between these two
- 59:56people, which the movie has basically been doing, the battle
- 59:59between the two I felt was really a let down.
- 1:00:02Did you have anything similar? Were you like, am I crazy?
- 1:00:05You know what? What are your thoughts on this?
- 1:00:06Well, you are, but it is not amazing.
- 1:00:10The scene itself, the the final sort of sword that that Marian
- 1:00:15had to give him. I get it makes sense that's a
- 1:00:17movie choice, but it's not an amazing action duel scene.
- 1:00:23Much like the Ben Kenobi Darth Vader.
- 1:00:26I I, I don't mind the part where he Nicks them, of course, then
- 1:00:31says we're even. Yes, those aren't even that's
- 1:00:33that scars across your face. That's a little just on the
- 1:00:36chin. Keep the stitches close, he
- 1:00:38says. Like, yeah, this won't even need
- 1:00:41a stitch. Exactly.
- 1:00:42So that's a little underwhelming in the line after now we're even
- 1:00:46and then you're not. But again, bad lines.
- 1:00:50It's not great. It's not great, it's just not.
- 1:00:52Energetic it never was, exciting, it never was.
- 1:00:54I think it probably may have been to a 12 year old me, maybe
- 1:00:57not exciting when watching it. And the point of an action
- 1:01:00sequence to me is to get the heart rate up to get exciting.
- 1:01:03The best has gone by at this point for me and I, I think I
- 1:01:06knew that kind of going into it, maybe not from the time I
- 1:01:08watched it when I was 12, when I watched it when I was 24 or
- 1:01:11something. Yeah, so again, not a bad
- 1:01:13moment. It just was like a let down.
- 1:01:16And then we kind of hard cut, hard cut.
- 1:01:19Now I will say Rickman dies brilliantly.
- 1:01:22He dies great in both of these movies and die hard.
- 1:01:24And in this one, he's got great death scenes.
- 1:01:26Watching him stubble, he's all kind of slobbery theater.
- 1:01:29Yeah, brilliant guy, brilliant work.
- 1:01:33And then we kind of have a hard cut to another wedding, the
- 1:01:36proper wedding. For all we know, they could have
- 1:01:37been divorced two years later. You know it is an 1192.
- 1:01:40That's true. Divorce rate was 80%.
- 1:01:43And we get the big surprise. And I remember vividly watching
- 1:01:47this movie with my family on one weekend, and I was again 12
- 1:01:52years old. I had known faces and names
- 1:01:54again, families, movie people. But when Sean Connery rolls up
- 1:01:59as King Richard. First direction audibly.
- 1:02:02My, you're 12. You're 12.
- 1:02:04Just saying. Audibly, my mother and my dad
- 1:02:07both were like awesome because they were big fans and whatever,
- 1:02:10that's their era. So the idea that that that bond
- 1:02:13or bond, yeah, Connery shows up as King Richard.
- 1:02:16I remember like they were both like, that's great casting.
- 1:02:19What? How much they paid him for that?
- 1:02:20Probably a lot. Remember that.
- 1:02:21That's why. He's at that point, he's an
- 1:02:23Oscar winner. Between him and Brian Ames, that
- 1:02:25explains the set, yeah. And then the Friar kind of
- 1:02:28breaks the 4th wall and talks to the screen.
- 1:02:30Yeah, interesting. Choice.
- 1:02:31Have fun, whatever. Like what?
- 1:02:33We've done close-ups, like camera close-ups of characters,
- 1:02:36but not breaking the 4th wall, just as a stylistic choice.
- 1:02:40But they're not talking to the camera.
- 1:02:41And this one he. Is, but it's fine.
- 1:02:44Doesn't Take Me Out. It's just really that's your
- 1:02:46choice to end the movie. I would probably just shut it
- 1:02:48off just before that. This is not a breaking of the
- 1:02:514th wall situation. I don't think so.
- 1:02:52It's like putting bloopers at the end of this movie.
- 1:02:54It's like, what about this movie tells you that?
- 1:02:55I would. Prefer that I'm a sucker for
- 1:02:59bloopers you are a sucker for. Blueprints.
- 1:03:00So yeah, it ultimately that I think it's because of that is
- 1:03:04why I had such a not a great taste in my mouth at the end of
- 1:03:07the movie, because it culminates in the sort of what I would
- 1:03:10consider a lackluster battle between good and evil, the good
- 1:03:13guy and the bad guy. And this joke kind of 4th wall
- 1:03:17breaking thing that I was just like, I don't know, I don't
- 1:03:20think I watch this movie a couple times this week and I, I
- 1:03:23just, I was like, I don't think I'll really watch this again.
- 1:03:25Like there wasn't enough to really pull me back into it.
- 1:03:28I think even a 4K restoration or some special edition wouldn't
- 1:03:31necessarily get me excited about it. 4K might do more harm than
- 1:03:34good. Could do, you know, yeah,
- 1:03:37Duncan's eyes might not look quite so, so pretty, but to hear
- 1:03:39that score and in a full blown, you know, 6 or 771 or 9 two,
- 1:03:47yeah. 11/2 buddy, come on respect yourself.
- 1:03:50So if there was a 4K copy available for you know like one
- 1:03:54of your three for 40 deals, which I do want to say I said
- 1:03:58was worse deal than Wellington. It was actually a better deal
- 1:04:01than Wellington. They were typically 15 or 16
- 1:04:05bucks a piece. So this would have been a little
- 1:04:07bit cheaper, but would you, would you pick it up if?
- 1:04:09It were really cheap maybe, but I don't think so.
- 1:04:12I don't think I would watch it again.
- 1:04:13What's your what's your threshold?
- 1:04:15I would buy the put a price on a buddy.
- 1:04:17I would buy the soundtrack I get on.
- 1:04:18Spotify, but I want you to put a price on it.
- 1:04:20No more than 15 bucks. OK.
- 1:04:23No more than 15, including shipping.
- 1:04:26Good to know. I do want to address something
- 1:04:28before we tie up this episode. OK, with my final thoughts,
- 1:04:32which is, you know, more important is Robin Hood is
- 1:04:36arguably the hero, and I like that.
- 1:04:39Deals from the rich gives to the poor.
- 1:04:40What's not heroic about that? He's a thief.
- 1:04:42So last week, Shelley, the machine, Levine kind of was the
- 1:04:49hero because he was also a thief.
- 1:04:51So I think. Yeah, I think, I think all
- 1:04:55thieves are good now, because this one thief is a hero.
- 1:04:59I don't know, I just think it paves the way for Shelley.
- 1:05:01The Prince of Thieves, though. Shelley is just a thief.
- 1:05:04He's not the Prince. He hasn't.
- 1:05:05He hasn't evolved. You know he.
- 1:05:08I love Shelly the machine here he is the hero of that story.
- 1:05:12That's beautiful. He sounds a great take.
- 1:05:15That's my major take away from this movie.
- 1:05:18But besides that, Phillip, it's a long movie too, right?
- 1:05:21So it takes a lot to time to get to the scenes that I'm I'm
- 1:05:26really interested in, but I still relatively enjoy the
- 1:05:29movie. But I think I've after watching
- 1:05:31these two times, I won't be rushing back to it anytime soon.
- 1:05:35I ironically could not find the copy that I did have.
- 1:05:39Oh, garage sale of. Course.
- 1:05:41Yeah I watched it a couple of weeks ago, rented it on YouTube,
- 1:05:46needed to note it so I had to re rent it on the YouTube so I paid
- 1:05:51about 10 bucks. That's your threshold.
- 1:05:54Yeah, that's my threshold. So I will not pay to watch it
- 1:05:57again. That's that's what I will say.
- 1:05:59I can still watch it tomorrow. The window still open.
- 1:06:01I think you're 48 hours. But ultimately I think it
- 1:06:05there's things about it that still hold up, things that
- 1:06:07don't. Soundtrack is still fantastic
- 1:06:10and it's a a great memory of Bryan Adams singing that
- 1:06:14beautiful song. Yes, yeah, you're right, it's a.
- 1:06:17It is a good memory and it'll have to stay that way 'cause I
- 1:06:19think I'm done with it. Fair enough.
