- 0:00Speaker 1: A reminder, Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark. We record the
- 0:05program today and you'll hear it tomorrow night at seven
- 0:09o'clocke here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 0:13But if you want to come out for the show,
- 0:15we have question cards that you can fill out if
- 0:17you have a question for Sark, and we'll get to those.
- 0:21We'll talk some State Fair deep fried food with him,
- 0:24and we'll do a little more of that coming up
- 0:26next segment, and also, obviously we'll talk about this matchup
- 0:30between the Long Words and the Sooner speaking of which
- 0:33this is from the SEC teleconference, And if you were
- 0:40at the press conference on Monday, which we brought to
- 0:43you live here on the Zone, you heard Sart talk
- 0:46about his respect and admiration for this game, the Red
- 0:52River rivalry matchup. They've played it one hundred nineteen times.
- 0:56This will be number one twenty. They played it continuously
- 1:01on the fair grounds of the State Fair of Texas
- 1:04since nineteen twenty nine, and they used to play in
- 1:09the old Fairground Stadium. It was a wooden structure that
- 1:12burned to the ground, and then when the Cotton Bowl
- 1:14Stadium itself was built, they started playing it continuously there
- 1:20in nineteen thirty seven, and it's undergone some renovation a
- 1:24couple of times, and there'll be some more coming, I
- 1:26think in the future. But it's the home every year
- 1:30for this game, and we know all about the special
- 1:33nature of it with the Sooner fans occupying the south
- 1:36end of the field from the fifty yard line end
- 1:39to the tunnel and the long worn fans occupying the
- 1:42north end from the fifty yard line out to the
- 1:46north end of the stadium. So it's half burn orange
- 1:49white and half Crimson cream and it makes for quite
- 1:53a quite an interesting television shot as well, in a
- 1:58spectacle when you walk into the state. That makes it
- 2:02different than Florida Georgia, and it makes it different from
- 2:06other rivalry games that are played at neutral sites as well.
- 2:12So it's it's really cool to see. And Sark expressed
- 2:16a lot of respect and admiration for that game. So
- 2:18he was asked on the teleconference if this Texas OU game,
- 2:23now that he's had three of those games under his belt,
- 2:27does this game rank as the best rivalry he's been
- 2:31a part of. Remember he was, you know, assistant coach,
- 2:36offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach played color at Alabama, which means
- 2:40Iron Bowl with Auburn, which is a home and home.
- 2:44But does this Texas OU game rank as the best
- 2:47rivalry he's been a part of? And more's the point,
- 2:50because so much emotion and energy is spilled out onto
- 2:55the Cotton Bowl turf, does he worry about his team
- 2:58peaking too early in the week emotionally leading up to it?
- 3:02Speaker 2: I would argue this is this is the premiere one
- 3:05to be part of. And like you hit the nail
- 3:07on the head there. I've been part of some great games,
- 3:10some great rivalries. This one is just so unique. Obviously,
- 3:15being a neutral site is one that it's never here
- 3:19in it. It's not the home at home, the setting
- 3:21of the game, the time of year, a lot of
- 3:24rivalry games or later in the season, but this this
- 3:27happened at this time of the year. The way the
- 3:31stadium is set up, the way the locker rooms are
- 3:34set up, There's so much that goes into it. And
- 3:36then you just think about the history and tradition, the coaches,
- 3:39the players, the teams that have been involved in this game,
- 3:42the proximity for both schools to Dallas. Uh, There's so
- 3:45many things that go into it. It just creates such
- 3:47an amazing environment that you know, we really try to
- 3:51cherish as a team and take in. We try not
- 3:53to lose sight of that, of what we get to.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Be part of.
- 3:56Speaker 2: And and to your point about getting too emotional or
- 4:00getting emotionally charged too soon, I would agree. You know,
- 4:04I think you have to you have to kind of
- 4:06tempo it as we'd like to say. It's kind of
- 4:08a crescendo to the game, and so you want to
- 4:12build it accordingly, because the best thing we can do
- 4:16is play well. And the best way to play well
- 4:18is to prepare really well, to be focused in practice, right,
- 4:21having the right mental intensity in practice, being really attentive
- 4:25in meetings, understanding the whise, and then that that should
- 4:31build just enough confidence to go out and play well.
- 4:33You know, I think when you get too emotionally charged up,
- 4:36you're worried about things that are kind of irrelevant to
- 4:40the outcome of the game, but they can prove to
- 4:44be relevant when selfish decisions get made, or coverages get blown,
- 4:49or blocking assignments get missed because you weren't quite engaged
- 4:54enough on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to go out
- 4:57and perform well on Saturday.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Question about going up against that Brent Venables coached Oklahoma defense,
- 5:05which right now, in case you're wondering what the numbers show,
- 5:09they are twenty seventh in the nation against the run.
- 5:14Now they are seventy fifth against the past total defense,
- 5:17forty first, scoring defense nineteenth. And he was asked about this,
- 5:24about facing this Brent Venables coach defense and the challenges
- 5:28it presents.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Really challenging. I said, he's one of the best in
- 5:32the country of doing it. He's like said, his teams
- 5:36play hard, they played with great effort. They're physical, they're tough,
- 5:41very ball aware, opportunistic creating turnovers and so and then
- 5:45he's got a multitude of defenses. So it's definitely a
- 5:48heck of a challenge.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Another challenge Sark will tell you is defending Oklahoma's freshman
- 5:53quarterback from Frisco Emerson Michael Hawkins Junior got inserted into
- 5:59the ball game against Tennessee when they were down and,
- 6:01as Toby Rowland told us in the first hour of
- 6:03the program, really floundering, kind of rallied them a little bit,
- 6:07led him to the road win at Auburn. So what
- 6:09about the challenge of this very versatal, mobile quarterback and
- 6:14really good athlete, Michael Hawkins.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the one thing about Hawkins is, you know,
- 6:19he's got a skill set to where he's more than
- 6:22capable of a passer and they use some obviously on
- 6:25some designed runs and things, and that that's hurt people too.
- 6:30But you know, really the Auburn game, the first touchdown
- 6:32run that he had was a pass and now you're
- 6:36starting to defend receivers and then you know, Auburn got
- 6:40out of their rush lanes and he was able to
- 6:41split them right down the middle of the field for
- 6:43about a fifty yard touchdown run, you know, and he
- 6:45showed the elite speed and elusiveness and so that that's
- 6:48probably the challenge, is that he's the versatility that he has,
- 6:52his ability to throw it, his ability to run it
- 6:54on design runs, and then his ability to tuck it
- 6:57in run on pass plays, and so that stresses you
- 7:01from a defensive perspective.
- 7:05Speaker 1: He will make Oklahoma's offense better. That the numbers offensively
- 7:09were so poor for Oklahom at the start before he
- 7:11got in there, that it's been a slow climb. There's
- 7:13still one hundredth in the nation rushing offense, one to
- 7:17eighteen in passing offense, twenty one in total offense. But
- 7:21they've been able to score some more through sixty ninth
- 7:23in scoring offense as well. And then one other question
- 7:28with regard to Isaiah Bond. We saw Bond score on
- 7:31the speed sweep against Mississippi State on that end a
- 7:35round and he really seems to have got his footing.
- 7:38You know, it's interesting during the fall camp workouts, Start
- 7:43didn't talk effusively, didn't say an awful lot about Isaiah Bond,
- 7:47and it was the other guys. It was like Silas Bolden,
- 7:50and then clearly the regulars like a DeAndre Moore and
- 7:55John te Cook who had stepped up, Brian Wingo as
- 7:58a as a true fresh been playing well. And then
- 8:01even in the transfer area, Matthew Golden and Silas Bolden
- 8:05we're mentioned more often than Bond. But now Bond of
- 8:09late has really begunnen to emerge. He's caught twenty passes
- 8:15and that's more than any other loghorn right now for
- 8:19three hundred and sixty four yards. He's averaging over eighteen
- 8:21yards per catch. He has the three touchdowns, he has
- 8:23the two carries, including that twenty six yard speech sweep
- 8:28for a touchdown. So Sark was asked about bond, going
- 8:31back to the if you will bond that the two developed,
- 8:37you know, when he was recruiting him, when he was
- 8:38in Georgia, before he even got to Alabama.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Isaiah has been a great addition to the team.
- 8:45You know, the transfer guys, it's always difficult because you know,
- 8:50they get ingrained into the culture that they're coming from
- 8:53and the style of play and the practice habits and
- 8:56all those things, and then we have a firm belief
- 8:58and how we'd like to operate. But I give Isaiah
- 9:01a lot of credit because he's continued to work it,
- 9:03work at it and buy into what we're doing. You know,
- 9:06I think, you know, his his ability to pick up
- 9:08pick up our offense systematically and have an impact kind
- 9:13of instantaneously for us has been big. And he and
- 9:16he's improved a ton from where he was in spring
- 9:18ball to where he is now. You know, he's a
- 9:21he's a big play waiting to happen. But yet I
- 9:24think we're starting to see him do even more and
- 9:26more of the little things, you know, the way we'd
- 9:28like it to be done. And I think that, you know,
- 9:30he's creating value for himself, not only within our organization,
- 9:34but I think, you know, for for a future playing
- 9:36this game in the NFL. I think people are starting
- 9:38to see the value that he possesses. But yeah, he's
- 9:41been a great addition for us.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Wondering about the the in case you were wondering about
- 9:48the UH numbers, the Texas numbers as are related nationally
- 9:53and in the SEC. The rushing offense is thirty seventh
- 9:56in the country, sixth in the SEC, passing offense tenth
- 10:00in the nation, third in the SEC, total offense seventh
- 10:04in the nation, third in the SEC, scoring offense seventh
- 10:08in the nation, second in the SEC. So some impressive
- 10:13numbers there, but they're going to clearly get their sternest
- 10:16test to date from an opposing defense in the one
- 10:21they'll see from Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon in the Cotton Bowl.
- 10:24I don't think there's any doubt about that. All Right,
- 10:26coming up, we'll have some more on these State Fair
- 10:32foods and we'll get you updated. Also on the baseball playoffs.
- 10:35Are two games in progress going on right now, so
- 10:37stay let's we continue on this Wednesday afternoon here on
- 10:39sports Radio Am thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
