  [upbeat music] Howdy, howdy.

Welcome to Full Spectrum Cycling. I'm Swen. Hello, I am JK. And I'm Tony. That's, uh, that's three for the price of one on this show today, folks. Deal. Holiday goodness. Savings all over here.
• 0:34
Yeah, you're getting like, uh, what, 66% more? I don't know. Something like that. Something like that..6. Math. Math. 660.6. I successfully have not spent any money on anything [laughs] for the holidays yet. Me either.
• 0:50
I have figured- I mean, for myself I have figured out, uh, donating to the favorite, uh, WMSE, $5.55 a month,
• 1:03
on a yearly basis comes out to $66.60. Nice. Nice. Just letting you know. So that's something. What, what was that number? 5.55? Mm-hmm. Oh. Which is very good. [ax clangs] Uh-oh. Hello.
• 1:19
Was that the, uh, was that the Pugsley World Championship ax? No, that was my brother Daryl. Why is- I'm, I'm axing, I'm axing you why that thing is here... why, why is that thing here?
• 1:32
[laughs] I, I don't get why the ax is here. [laughs] Uh- Let me guess, Aaron was here earlier? Nope, it's on tour. It didn't, Aaron didn't bring it. Aaron just touched it though.
• 1:41
[laughs] Aaron just touched it, look at that. What's happening, buddy? Not much. Aaron Domeier just walked in the door, folks. Ladies and gentlemen. Surly bicycles and whatnot. Holy mackerel. Holy mackerel.
• 1:53
Uh, so the, the PWC ax is here 'cause somebody asked for it back. Ah-hmm. And it had been at Chad's house for quite a while. Oh. Oh.
• 2:03
I don't know how it got there, but I think O'Gara was the last champion and Chad decided it should have been his, so he absconded with it in 2015, so it's been floating around here for a while. Wow.
• 2:14
[laughs] But, uh, they got the Shell Track thing going on up there in Manitowoc this week and, uh- Oh, is that this week already? Yeah, no kidding. Oh, holy shit. It's usually, well, usually later than that.
• 2:24
I know, I, I just, I like, I saw pictures in my memories and I was like, "Oh my God. Yeah, this is Shell Track." Oh, you're pretty fast, Aaron. Yeah. Quick, quick, that guy is. Like a bunny.
• 2:35
I decided to drink my dinner tonight. I gotta punch you in right there. You see that? There we zoom. See how I did that? Woo. Punch him in, man. Virtual. Welcome, Aaron. Did you s- you touched the ax. I did.
• 2:44
I couldn't help myself. Had you ever seen it before? No, that's a, my first, uh, gander at the PWC ax. Were you familiar with the Pugsley World Championship event? Sadly, no.
• 2:55
It was, uh, 2011, I think was the first one, and that was in Decorah, Iowa. Eric Sovereign and- Yep. Yep... some other Surly types, um- It's coming back... sort of- Some Surly types...
• 3:06
spearheaded it along with the local, uh, the local lovelies. It's all coming back to me now. Yes, I do remember that. Yeah. Yeah. It was a, it, it was a great event.
• 3:15
The first couple years were just phenomenal because nobody knew what a fat bike was except for a few folks and- It's melting people's brains...
• 3:23
you know, there was a race which the ax has absolutely nothing to do with at all. [laughs] It's more about the shenanigans that get you the ax, much like a single speed world championship kind of idea.
• 3:33
Yeah, wasn't it like the first year it was like you guys had to wrestle it out at the end? I think- Colin and someone... I don't know, maybe. Yeah.
• 3:40
Colin won the second year, so maybe that was- No, I think that was just Spinner and Luns... Indian leg wrestling... Spinner and Luns just- Oh, yeah. Spinner... working it out. Yeah Just working it out. [laughs] Yep.
• 3:49
So, uh, Spinner's gonna be at the Shell Track race, so we're gonna hand it back over and see where it might lead. Be kinda nice to rekindle that event.
• 3:58
That's a great place to have an event, in Decorah there and- Hell yeah That'd be fun. Yeah. You gotcha. Uh, so that's, uh, that's a fat bike thing, that, uh, ax. It's made from what?
• 4:09
The old school- The large Marge rims... large Marge rims. It's nice usage, right? Tell large Marge. About as, about as good a use as you can get out of a large Marge these days. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, modern art and such.
• 4:20
Well, you could probably kill someone with them. They're heavy enough to beat them to death. Yeah, but you, I don't know if you wanna throw them on a bike anymore, so. No, no. Y- you mean you can. You could. Yeah.
• 4:28
My friend- Not these though, 'cause they're cut in half... someone from Surly gifted me my first fat bike wheel set.
• 4:32
I was building up a, a red Pugsley frame set and they were free, and I rode them, and I rode them a lot, and they were- Free is good... they were strong and good and free. Strong and good and free.
• 4:43
And then when you change, oh my. Oh, yes. Oh my. Trusky, uh- Oh my... Trusky had a pretty good template to drill them out. Yep. Oh, right. Sure, sure.
• 4:51
'Cause he punched a bunch of holes in his which saved a tremendous amount of weight. Oh, yes.
• 4:56
I, I sweet-talked some of the engineers at Surly to let me use the, uh, the drill press, and they helped me rig up like a wooden block thing, and I'm just like- Yeah... whoop-a-whoop-a.
• 5:02
[laughs] And it was like, like six pounds of aluminum I just like- Yeah [laughs]... machined down these rims. It was unreal. Amazing. It'd been almost enough to buy a beer, too. Right, right.
• 5:10
You could have rec- you know, take it to the recycler- Right... and be like, "Can I have a beer?" Yeah, sure. I melted it down and made a frame out of it. I know. Speaking of beer. Oh. Oh, we, we are there? Oh, yes.
• 5:19
[bell ringing] Top of the hill. Top of the hill, folks. Uh- Yes. Yeah, and keep the pinky out on that. Yep. Yeah. This is, we're drinking near beer. So s- sophisticated here. I love it.
• 5:28
To be fair, it's so I don't get my finger- Exactly. To be fair. To be fair. To be fair. So my pinky doesn't touch the bell and dull the ring. Mm. Oh. Uh, Mike is responsible for the beer today.
• 5:41
I'm, I'm gonna let him t- tell you [laughs] about it. Well, it's called America AF. America's Fuck. [laughs] And it, I mean, it, it looks very, uh- American... 'Merica. Whoa. Free. Yeah.
• 5:51
Is that George Washington with a Gatling gun? Yeah, it's, yeah, it's- And the eagle on his shoulder, man... and like everything about this, I mean, you, hey, go for it. Um- What's that hand on the bottom?
• 6:00
It's, uh- Stalin... it's a 3.3. [laughs] It's a 3.3. It's like barely a Utah. Three-point Utah, yeah. [laughs] Well, it's a watermelon kolsch. I've seen some of these pop up these like f- like- Yeah...
• 6:14
melon flavored kolsches You know, it's, it's drinkable. I don't know if you can qualify it as beer- I like-... but it's drinkable.
• 6:18
I like, I like the kolsch-flavored kolsch I, I don't taste beer in it, but- What's wrong with that? It just- It tastes a lot like watermelon. Yeah. And, and- And water And water... and, and whatever.
• 6:27
[laughs] Three three, I don't know. It- It makes you look like you're drinking a beer if you're not drinking the beer And I guess if you're a, as American AF- Well, they want it, like-...
• 6:33
you're gonna drink a lot of beer, so this- Sometimes you just wanna-... this would allow you to do that That's true, yeah. And it's American. Hell yeah. American. AF. Fuck yeah. AF. FA, no, that would be, uh- Oh, that...
• 6:44
Loving Rockets. Carbon Four, okay. Yep, Carbon Four- S-... out of Madison, you know? They make delicious beers. One of our favorites, uh- With great labels... yep... they had some great labels. Yes.
• 6:51
And that was the other part. I was like, "I don't wanna disparage- [laughs]... Carbon Four on this one." [laughs] I'm like, "But Three Three, come on now."
• 6:58
[laughs] It's, it's kinda crazy how, like, the craft beer has, like, gotten wise to, like, how if you have a really cool label, you'll sell a shit ton of beer. Oh, yeah. Like, you know? Yeah.
• 7:05
And actually, it's like a arms race now. Like, who... They're, like, hiring artists and, like, all this cool, like, s- you know? But if you notice- Yeah... this, this was, this was just a semi run. Oh, was it? Yeah.
• 7:16
Oh, yeah, I don't think they- Yeah... I don't know if they had a can Yeah, they, they just, like, slapped this together during the summer months. Yep. I- [laughs] They don't...
• 7:23
If they don't have a canning, you know, the truck comes through, and it does the canning for you. Yeah, so they put labels on a lot of their beers. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. And I was like- Plastic people...
• 7:29
I like this beer The canning truck. What a great business that is. That is an awesome business. The canning truck? It's a truck- Yep... that has a complete canning line in it- Oh, shit...
• 7:35
and they pull up to a brewery that doesn't have a canning line- That's genius... and can their beer for them. Isn't it? There's a huge...
• 7:40
I looked into it, and there's a big one in Chicago that travels all around the Midwest. I bet she makes a ton of money. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Well, that's what, uh, Good City did before they got bigger. That's nice.
• 7:50
And they said, yeah, the guy would pull up. I was talking to a couple of guys there, like, uh, Tim, and they, they, they pull up one morning, and they drain a, a tank. That's awesome. Like g- Just bloop, bloop, bloop...
• 7:59
and they have it all ready to go. They said it takes about an hour to set up and a half hour to shut down. That's what- And the rest of the time, they're making beers...
• 8:05
and then, and then you just need to, like, get some sort of label printer to- Yep... to put Well, they, they actually print- Yeah, 'cause they, oh, they do it all... the labels for you- Yeah...
• 8:09
and attach them, so they come- Mm Gotta have your artwork ready that- There you go, yeah... and your beer, and you're good to go. That's right. Yep. Yeah. 'Merica. 'Merica. Fuck yeah. Fuck yeah. AF.
• 8:18
That's, that's genuine American ing- ingenuity right there. [laughs] Yeah, that- You know? So, uh, were, wa- Er- was Aaron on any, uh, Santa Rampage ride this weekend? No. I was, uh...
• 8:28
What the hell did I do last weekend? Nothing. You got kind of a gnome- [laughs] You got kind of a gnome look going on, dude. You could have totally- Yeah... pulled that off. I- What did you do for Global Fat Bike Day?
• 8:36
Oh, I did, I did- I did not do anything... I did actually ride that day. I had- Oh... had a few too many beers, kind of forgot about that one. [laughs] I met, um, Trevor up at, um, Boom Island in downtown Minneapolis.
• 8:45
There's- Really?... the only place to have a f- a campfire with a bunch of bikes in the city, and went up there, had some beers, and got a little fuzzy and then went home and went to bed early.
• 8:52
It was, it was a good day. [laughs] Yeah, we- Fair enough. It was... we kinda combined both the, uh, the Global Fat Bike Day and the Santa Rampage into one large- Yeah... day of going 12 hours of riding.
• 9:03
Global Rampage, yeah. I, I got home in the evening and like, "Well, I gotta go quick do a Global Fat Bike Day ride," and I rode right over to Gathering Place, had a couple of beers and rode home. Nice. Fair enough.
• 9:11
It's like, there we go. There you go. Yep. It's, I qualify that. You, you contributed. Yeah. And someone, some young lady bartender was like, "You're riding your bike on this cold day?" Oh, Lord.
• 9:20
Number one, this ain't cold. Yep. And number two, I ride my bike every day. And apparently she didn't see, uh, the 3,000 Santas that were- Right... around Milwaukee- Yeah... on their way to f- get work.
• 9:33
[laughs] So one of the quasi Santas that we saw on the ride was right at the beginning. Uh, Mike Idol owns Nomad, which is where we started our Santa day, uh, express- Shenaniganery... shenaniganery.
• 9:46
And we did talk to him for a few minutes, and I think we'll shove that in the show right here. Hey, guys. Uh, hey, everybody, man on the street thing going here.
• 9:57
JK and, uh, Sven out in front of Nomad World Pub on Brady Street in Milwaukee with, uh, Mike Idol, the owner of said establishment. We're at Santa Rampage, uh- Yeah, that's right...
• 10:07
December 7th, 2019, and just wanted to talk to Mike real quick about his experiences with the Rampage over the years. Mike, welcome to the program. How's it going? Great. Great to be here.
• 10:18
Dressed a little bit oddly today, but- Mike's in soccer-... enjoying the nice weather... and Santa regalia here. Nice. Yeah, yeah. Gorgeous day for a Santa Rampage. Yes.
• 10:26
Wish there was snow and sleet, but what are you gonna do? [laughs] It's almost gonna be 40 degrees today. That'll be kind of, uh, unusual for Santa. We usually get a lot of, uh, s- snow and- I prefer- Other whatnot...
• 10:35
when it's like, when it brings a character out, slims down the herd. [laughs] Absolutely. So hi, I'm Santa. No, this is great. Yeah. [laughs] H- h- [laughs] How did Nomad get involved in the ride? Um, well, let's see.
• 10:49
I, I mean, I s- I was on the second ever ride with Dave, 'cause Da- I met Dave Shabowski. Sure, sure. We were on the bike ped task force for Mayor Nora Quest. And he was telling me, "Last year, we..."
• 11:01
You know, with the Dave voice. [laughs] "We got... A couple of us got dressed up as Santas, and we did this crazy ride, and we went all over." And he was telling me all about it, so I jumped on the ride that next year.
• 11:12
There might have been 11 of us. Yeah, I remember some of those early rides were very small. And then the next one was, like, the next year was, like, 25, and people would be like, "That's cool. We're gonna do that."
• 11:21
You know, "What are you doing? First Saturday in December, ho ho ho." And you know, back then it was small enough to, like... I remember riding through Coppers. We checked out on our bikes through the- [laughs]...
• 11:33
through the checkout lanes. We rode through Grand Avenue Mall, like, with security guards chasing us. We went through the Marquette Union. [laughs] Went through El Rey and bought tamales.
• 11:44
Like, we, we, we were small enough to do that stuff back then, and then it just- Yeah... you know, the idea we wanted to do was show people how easy it was to get in every single neighborhood of the city at the time.
• 11:55
  Everything was so close.
• 11:56
So you know, being on it every year, you'd get bored with just being a rat in a cage, so eventually we'd be tri- riding by my own bi- 'cause I would do the rollout at Hollinger and lead everybody out one night, and you got, you get involved.
• 12:11
And it'd be like, "Well, do I wanna pack into the brewery and fight for that beer?" Yeah. [laughs] "Or do I wanna stand in The Nomad and have a quick one, watch some football?" Well, footy. Footy.
• 12:22
One of the, one of the best footy bars in Milwaukee, folks. If you're in the area, stop by Nomad and watch some, uh, Premier League or-... World Cup action or whatever, anything Any, any club, any country.
• 12:32
But anyway, it started after the Hone, man. Like- [laughs] You know, I remember it looked so lonely just sitting there and I was like...
• 12:37
So eventually a few of us would just peel off from the Hone ride, and they'll be coming by any moment, and you'll see, you know, 10 or 20 smart people decide- [laughs]...
• 12:46
to be, "Sean, hey, Sean and beer here," before they fight for it down at the brewery, so. Indeed, indeed. And then, you know, it j- we just... There's been some many, many epic adventures on these rides.
• 12:56
I don't even know how many years it's been. Um- I, boy, I don't know. I've been doing it a long time. Uh- That's right. We, a bunch of us have done the Hone on the way, after the cold, dark...
• 13:05
[laughs] You know, it's a cold, dark, lonely ride, especially if you're dressed up like Santa's, like, sort of sex bitch, which I did for several years. Oh, yes. That must be a delightful one.
• 13:13
[laughs] So it was fine to hide in the pack, but then when you're all by yourself coming all the way back from Cahanski's to the east side, it, it's a lonely ride.
• 13:21
At those bus stops where kids were waving, they're now, their moms are now shielding their eyes like- [laughs]... "Who's that freak?" Yeah.
• 13:28
Um, but no, there were a couple where we'd stop at Central and then sneak over the Hone Bridge.
• 13:33
I don't know if I'm supposed to say that, but- May- We've, there's some, there's some government officials that decided to do that with us, probably against their better judgment, but why not?
• 13:42
Yeah, I mean, I remember when the ride was more of a, more of a point to point stop along the way kind of route with- Yeah... that was all cohesive, and it's gotten so big that there's a lot of feeder- Yeah...
• 13:53
places now. Well, well, and that was- Yeah... the intention. Like, we wanted it to just be a day where you could create your own ride.
• 13:58
Like, give people the ability to raise a ton of money for the bike run and have an official ride, but then... Hey, two of the guys from my bike team. [laughs] So I'm being interviewed, Brad. [laughs] Yeah, interview.
• 14:12
Big time. With microphones. Big time radio. Right now? Yes. They, we're trying to beat the crowd at the comeback. Oh. See, they're trying to beat- See, I'm getting sucked into that thing. [laughs] This is my point.
• 14:24
You know what I mean? Like, no, so yeah, that, you know, then we, we, w- for liability purposes we have that, we turned it into that big ride from toe to- Great... lakefront.
• 14:32
And then that helped sort of, the whole idea was to have the places crawling with their own rides and- And it is Yeah... start at Jimmy's house- And it has... and go to Susie's big barn party and, uh, whatever.
• 14:41
Yeah, create, yeah, create your own adventure. I don't, I, I don't even know if we can throw a number at how many Santas will be out today, but I'm gonna say it's gonna be 1,000 Santas. Way more than that.
• 14:50
Way more than that 'cause it's- Way... it's a decent enough day and [laughs] Yeah, on a day like this with all the little poppy rides and sub rides and everything- Yeah...
• 14:57
just the main ride alone will have 700 people, so. Oh, shit, yes. On a day like this? Yeah. On a day like this.
• 15:02
It, it's got like a, like an eight- You know, you're like walking down the street and you'll see like 18 Santas going by. Yeah, it's like a, it's like an eight block parade. Dense parade. Yeah, for sure.
• 15:10
It'd be fun to get, like, a view of, from, from, you know- I'm sure someone's gonna... an airplane view of just, like, probably looks like an a- yeah, just like this. [laughs] Little, little red Santas riding everywhere.
• 15:22
Yeah. Yeah. And, you know- Someone's gonna have to stop at the liquor store...
• 15:24
I like to, I like to bring up the point for people that want to do this in other cities, um, Mike kind of alluded to it, but the, one of the original purposes of this was to remind people that folks ride their bikes all year round.
• 15:35
This isn't just a summertime thing. And, uh, you know, if you see a Santa riding a bike, you know, give him a little bit of wider berth and, uh, make sure that you're safe and have a good time.
• 15:46
Yeah, I mean, every day is a good day to go for a bike. Hell yeah. He, he'll tell you. Mike will tell you. [laughs] Okay. All right, man, thanks very much for, uh, doing this. Thanks for having me, man. Any, yeah.
• 15:56
Yeah, we'll talk to you, uh, next year probably. Thanks for finding your podcast. Yeah. Good luck with, you want to keep me on a deal. Full Spectrum Cycling, folks. Yeah. All right, have a good one. See you, guys.
• 16:06
You're tuned to the Full Spectrum Cycling Podcast. Thanks, Mike. Yeah, and we're back. What a great show. All right. [laughs] Hey, thanks, Mike. Uh- Holy moly... yeah, he has a lot of good stuff to say.
• 16:16
Um, as you heard, he was one of the people that was on some of the first rides and, uh, I would, I, I think I went, I must have been on the third. I never rode over the Hone, but that might've been- No, no...
• 16:27
just because I didn't stay out that late those times. [laughs] I'm not sure. Or have the franticness that I need to get north now. Yeah. You're not, you're not supposed to ride your bik- bike over the Hone Bridge. Oh.
• 16:41
  It's, it's a pretty big, very high bridge. It's a- Gotcha... it's a f- it's part of the interstate, but it's a- Spur? Yeah. 7, it's 794. 794. Mm. Not a- It's the big thing you see-... full interstate...
• 16:54
at the harbor downtown... it's a by, it's a bypass. Yeah. It's a bypass so you can- Hone, Hone was one of our mayors who fought- You can get away with doing it...
• 16:59
to have the bridge built, and then when he died they built it and named it after him. Mm. It was called the Bridge to Nowhere for many years. It was the Bridge to Nowhere.
• 17:06
That's where, uh, Blue- Is he, is his corpse encapsulated in the bridge somewhere like in Esophagus? Maybe. I don't know. They redid it a couple years ago. That's where, uh, Blues, Blues Brothers. Yeah, the one in Sal.
• 17:13
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's the bridge in Blues Brothers- While it was being, while it was being constructed... if I was being constructive. He isn't, like, s- cemented into the footings, is he? No, that's Hoffa.
• 17:22
Like some mafia kind of thing? That's- That's Hoffa. They got it all wrong. Hoffa's in Milwaukee. I do kind of, I'd be so honored to be encased in, in cement in, like, the footing of a bridge.
• 17:30
I think that kind of, kind of rules. Oh, yeah, like Han Solo or that. It'd be kind of bad to be buried like that. Talk the shit out of that bridge and scare little kids. It'd be awesome.
• 17:36
I- Yeah, and just be there like Han Solo style. Mm-hmm. [laughs] Right, exactly. [laughs] Han. [laughs] Michael's all excited that the, uh, final- Oh, yeah... episode or
• 17:50
closing moments of the Star Wars- The last chapter of the-... quadrilogy... Skywalker saga is in nine days. Okay. It's nine days away? Seven days when this airs, but yeah, nine days from now.
• 18:00
Yeah, 'cause, you know, this airs after we had this great ride last night. Yes. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. That's why Aaron's here. And ooh, doggy. You know, he brought a bunch of surly bikes and- Woo-hoo...
• 18:09
he, he's a cool cat and we had a great ride last night, man. It was fricking... The weather got nice and warm- It was the best... in comparison- And it's full moon. It's full moon. Like, actual full ass full moon.
• 18:18
That is actually something I did not know. Yep. Yeah. Full moon is good. 12/12 full moon. Right on. I am- So somebody better be wearing assless chaps.
• 18:32
JK pull some out All chaps- Chaps our ass- Our assless. [laughs] That's the reason I said it Nice Fucking point. [laughs] I was just, like, thinking if I packed mine. I usually do, but I think I forgot those at home.
• 18:44
Oh, they're easy to make. We got scissors. [laughs] It's true, yeah. [laughs] I just- We got scissors... how about, how about some assless, like, Carhartt o- coveralls?
• 18:51
I just got some brand new coveralls I gotta break in this weekend. [laughs] Coveralls. Cut, cut the ass out of them. That's your... Are those your winter riding pants? Um, sometimes. Carhartt chaps. Yeah.
• 19:00
I got some, like, winter dungarees. I like where our heads at on this one. [laughs] Just, just- I'm gonna digress- Just two circles... Winter dungarees [laughs] Can I digress slightly?
• 19:07
'Cause I'm thinking of assless- Not, not like the poop hole flap in one?... Carhartt chaps. [laughs] Do you know what I forgot is really funny? [laughs] Baby farts.
• 19:16
Now that I have a new kid at home, um, the, the gas that these kids produce is pretty epic. I- Is it impressive? It, it can be. Is it- Well, you hope it's just gas... is it...
• 19:26
[laughs] Yeah, you, you thought- 'Cause sometimes it ain't... you thought it was with the- Well- You, you thought it was with the pet. We're training the dog. Ooh, my God. Yeah, we're, we're- Ooh, that was-...
• 19:34
we're training the dog to tell us- Man, it's like, ooh... if it's gas or other. There you go, so that is- She's doing okay so far... send the dog in for, for the intel... Yep, yep, like, "Hey, Betty Pulses, is that gas?
• 19:42
Boop." Has your dog ever passed out from it? No. That's good. She, she's tough. 'Cause that would be... Good dog. Good dog She's tough. She's a big dog. Good dog. Yeah, that'd be- That's how you- "Such a good dog.
• 19:50
She's such a good dog." "Who's a good dog?" "Who's a good dog?" "Who's a good dog?" "Oh, you're such a good dog." "Who's such a good dog?" Oh. [laughs] If you haven't watched Letterkenny, people, just stop the show now.
• 20:01
Yep, pause. Go watch all eight seasons. Yep. Then come back. Get your, get your free month trial and, and just- You gotta- [laughs]... knock 'em out... it's so freaking hilarious.
• 20:07
[laughs] I, I bla- I blame Aaron for having to have watched all of them now, so. That came from Ben Youngbar, one of our engineers. He started- Well, you, you lose a lot of heat through your neck.
• 20:13
He started, uh- Hey, Aaron... he started dropping a bunch of Letterkenny quotes to me, and I was like, "What's wrong with you, Ben?" He's like, "You've never seen Letterkenny?" And he did the same thing I did to you.
• 20:19
I was like, "Just, dude, just go watch it." Just start watching. [laughs] You're just... He's like, "You went to state school."
• 20:23
My- Like, he, like, your own hockey culture, your farm country, you will laugh your ass off to this show...
• 20:27
my, my friend is an REI salesperson, and, uh, she's also on my bowling league, and I walked in wearing this- [laughs]... on Monday, and first thing she said to me is, "You lose a lot of heat out your neck." That's right.
• 20:37
And she actually uses that as a sales line at REI. [laughs] And people either lose it 'cause they know it's Letterkenny- Yeah... or they're like, "Oh, you're right." And either way, she probably makes a sale, you know?
• 20:46
[laughs] Makes a good sale. Yeah. Interesting. An interesting point, I don't know if anyone cares, REI was closed on... Black Friday? Black Friday. Good for them. Power outage or? I don't know. No.
• 20:59
[laughs] They, they take the day off and don't- Oh, they do?... participate in the- Okay... consumerism... I, I just happened to be driving- They're still pretty consumerism, you think?... down Capitol.
• 21:05
The one REI in Milwaukee is w- well, Milwaukee, barely, [laughs] way the fuck out west, and I'm like, "Well, they should be bus- nobody's in the- Nobody's in-... parking lot." Huh. Interesting.
• 21:22
There's a, there's a movement afoot to do that, uh- Oh, no, I, I get it. That's cool, but- I, it's an incredibly respectable warehouse... I mean, well, it's like, well, [laughs]
• 21:30
dude- All those people just turned around, went home, and shopped on their online store. [laughs] That's also the thing. It's going like- Amazon... "Whoa, no, no, we don't wanna give a deal."
• 21:39
[laughs] We're gonna save all these employees'- They're gonna spend money no matter-... you know, paychecks by having everyone shop online... fucking what.
• 21:44
[laughs] Well, you can s- stay at home and rest up for Small Business Saturday, where you can go- Exactly, damn it... you know, not give your small business.
• 21:50
I drink water and I stretch, so I'm nice and limber for Small Business Saturday. Give my, get my strides in, you know? Yeah. Mile walker. Yeah, I'd, I, I, I gotta say, I, I- If there were malls, not town centers...
• 21:59
I did make one purchase on Black Friday. It was for beer, 'cause I had forgotten to plan ahead like an amateur, and I thanked the cashier immensely for being open on Black Friday. They were cool.
• 22:08
Lakefront Brewery has- They're like, "Was this weird? Why do you keep talking to me? Get out of here," you know? [laughs] L- Lakefront Brewery has built an empire out of Black Friday sales. It's crazy.
• 22:15
They had porta potties there this year- [laughs] You're kidding... because the line's so long. No shit. 'Cause they have a limited edition release Black Friday beers. Was Russ walking around scolding you? Probably.
• 22:24
I don't, I didn't go. [laughs] He certainly was scolding at the, uh, [laughs] Santa's Rampage stoplight. Was he? [laughs] Oh, he thought there was an active shooter at the place 'cause- [laughs] Oh, no. Santa shooter...
• 22:34
M- Mike, Mike might've had some of those, uh, firecracker popper things. Oh. Oh, shooting candy canes. No. Somebody might have. No. Somebody m- Candy cane Gatling gun? No. Kenny. Was Kenny there?
• 22:43
There were just, yeah, little poppers are out in the world, and not, I didn't throw 'em. I didn't throw any. I st- stepped on one, but... Yeah. They're just on the f- yeah. They're on the, they grow there.
• 22:57
But- Sorry, Rose... yeah, it's all part of the game. Yes, exactly. Sorry, Rose. I mean, all part of the Santa hustle. Yeah. It's, it's part of the show. So how, uh, how hungover are you guys from last night's ride?
• 23:07
[laughs] Not much. I just woke up. 'Cause, you know, those, those two for one Black Huskies, whoa. We rode far enough where it wasn't really a problem. It's not how far you go, it's how go you far. Hm.
• 23:17
How many people do you think could identify- [clicking]... this sound? Ski school. [laughs] It's so quiet. It's definitely not Hope. No. We all know it's not Hope. Can you, can, can you do just one click, though?
• 23:31
Oh, good. [laughs] So silly. Oh. Mm-hmm. DT Swiss, folks. Mm-hmm. 350 big rides. Delicious. That's a nice hub right there.
• 23:40
Dude, if you- But apparently not good enough for some people, 'cause they had to take them off and put something even fancier on. Are you kidding? Yeah. Well, we're not gonna mention his name, Sam. Yeah.
• 23:49
Well, Onyx, you know. [laughs] Gotta go with Onyx Racing when you're going for the best. Yes. Tactical. You gotta sneak up on them. Yeah. Yep. Yep. All stealthy and whatnot. Yeah. Those are nice hubs.
• 23:57
Goes and works his stuff. You can hardly hear that axis shifter shifting on his fat bike- [laughs]... because- That, oh, it's incredible... because those hubs are so quiet, you can hear it go ch, ch, ch.
• 24:07
It's the- You know, it's quieter than mine... prettiest fat bike I've ever seen. Single speed Onyx. And we, and we were- Ooh, that would be stealth... ah, that's stealthy.
• 24:13
That'd be like Seal Team 6 type shit right there. Yeah. Sneaking around, yeah. And we were audience of his new beard. Right. He's like, "This is gonna happen. This is it forever." It looks good on him. Yeah.
• 24:25
It just works out. It was well- For-... formulated and- You know, for a middle-aged man, the dude looks great in a Mohawk, too. Thank you. You know? If I could grow one, I would, too.
• 24:36
[laughs] I just look like a- A middle-aged man? Again, yes. [laughs] I noticed, I noticed the bike getting quite the workout at the Great Lakes. People were taking it for cruises. Really? Yeah.
• 24:50
I'm like- Sam's nice about that. The guy takes care of that... "Well, don't break it right away, just..." [laughs] "Wait, what do you mean? You'll just rebuild it and get more money."
• 24:57
"Ah, that thing has got pretty good-" Yeah, that's a pretty- [laughs] That's a tough tank... not gonna have another thing. That's a Gore Julius bicycle. All right. Uh, what else have we been doing? It looks so pretty.
• 25:08
Hmm. Uh- Well, Aaron's in town for this event we had yesterday, and today he's traveling somewhere. Where are you gonna be traveling to in the future? In the future, the day after the ride- Yeah...
• 25:18
I'll be heading to Madison. Nice. Easy drive day. Just, like, get into town, get settled in for our- Madison, Spain? Madison, Wisconsin. Ah. That's gonna be a, that'd be a long drive. Oh, good.
• 25:27
I'm not sure I could make it. Re- Revolution or whatever. Revolution. Revolution. So how does the demo work at Revolution? We are actually going off-site this time.
• 25:35
We're going to Camrock, which is, uh, my first demo there actually. So hopefully the weather, hopefully the, the snow holds, so it doesn't get too warm for the demo.
• 25:43
Yeah, that's kinda was the problem there for Global Fat Bike Day. Mm-hmm. They ended up going at, like, 7:00 in the morning, so it was cold enough to still be firm. Yep.
• 25:50
Which is crazy, 'cause I just came from Min- Minneapolis today, and it... Or yesterday I should say. And, um- [laughs] Yeah. Man, get that- I'll get there. It's, it's time travel and stuff...
• 25:58
I might have to crack this America AF real quick here. Yeah, I know. It's just those little signs. Time travel. [laughs] Yeah. Um, but it was, like, negative seven this morning. It was, it was- Yo...
• 26:06
it was cold AF if anybody need- Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was... I brought my, brought my, brought my big coat this morning. So, um, it's just strange, like, having that transition.
• 26:15
The further east I go, it gets warmer and warmer. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Like, I was like, windows down coming to Milwaukee like, "Woo-hoo," shirt off, just like, "Party time," you know? And it was so warm.
• 26:23
Yeah, it was, it was colder yesterday. [laughs] Yeah, yesterday and this morning was- Yeah, it was pretty nipple... or three days ago... it was, it was, uh- Single digits... colder we got then. Yeah, yeah. Same thing.
• 26:31
Yep, yep. And tomorrow's going to be glorious. Yes. Tomorrow's gonna be good. Or, I mean, yesterday is gonna be- [laughs] Yesterday's probably gonna be- Yesterday's gonna be 38 degrees.
• 26:40
[laughs] Got a shout of thanks out to, uh, Tim and Tony too for giving us some deals at Black Husky and, you know- Mm-hmm, mm-hmm... checking out our rides and stuff.
• 26:46
And we're going to have gone there in just a little while. Yeah. [laughs] Already yesterday [laughs] for- I lo- I love this alternate universe we live in. This is grand. Yeah, it's fantastic.
• 26:55
I am just having a great time- We do this a lot... just trying to figure this out... like time travel. Yep. You know, we could just do this live, and then we wouldn't have all that, uh- The multiverse... extra content.
• 27:05
Takes all the fun out of it though. The multiverse. Yep. Yep. You know? You ever see the movie Time Cop with Jean-Claude Van Damme? Oh, yeah. That was a goodie. It's been a while. Oh, careful. Ah, my balls.
• 27:15
[laughs] [laughs] Yeah. Hey, and welcome to the podcast. So, but yeah, that was from Time Cop. [laughs] He did that thing. Oh, that's right, yeah. He did the splits. 'Cause he was a- Yeah... he was a- That was a-...
• 27:25
gymnast, you know? Yeah, that was a- Well, yeah, no, no, uh- That was, uh, that was- Isn't he the dude-... kickboxer though...
• 27:30
isn't he the dude that also did the, uh, vulva, the two vulvas, and he did the splits between them? Yeah. Yeah. That was a couple years back. Yep. Yeah, he was like a m- Moving...
• 27:38
he was definitely a gymnast in, like, college or whatever. JCVD. Thought he was a- JCVD. Yeah. This show's actually pretty damn funny. Like, it's- Does he have a twin brother too? Yeah, his name is Jean-Claude Van Damme.
• 27:49
Jean-Claude Van Darn... he often plays- [laughs] Jean- He often plays himself as a twin. Yeah. Playing himself. Is that what it is? Yeah. Double, Double Impact. Yeah. Double, yeah. Okay, that's what it was. All right.
• 27:59
Never mind. Oh, my God, yeah. That's like- Classic... yeah, Dead Ringers with Jeremy Irons and Jeffrey Irons. [laughs] [laughs] And we've digressed. Oh, yeah.
• 28:15
[laughs] Come on down the rabbit hole. I, I, I gotta say something. I'm, I'm really glad I actually skipped dinner tonight to, to, to get here.
• 28:23
I, I got a late, late start from Minneapolis today, so I got to town a lot later than I ha- I had intended Sandwich in every can.
• 28:30
So I was like, "Well, I could go get food and do that thing, or I could come and just have a couple beers and figure out the food thing later." Cheers. There's been a- [laughs]... logical choice.
• 28:39
And then you can go out for jerky after. Beef jerky. Yeah, we can, we can find you some food. There's food all over this area here. I'll definitely be, uh, you know- I'm a bit oiled, but okay. We'll get there.
• 28:48
[laughs] I was all excited for jerky last week, and then well, didn't have any jerky. Yeah. What's your, what's your, what's your go-to brand for jerky? Uh- Okay, let's do this. Your favorite, and then
• 28:59
your go-to, like, in a pinch. Piece of cake. I mean, variety or where to get it? Either or. [laughs] Uh, Held's, uh, heading up to Slinger as you're heading home if you haven't- Held's, hell yeah...
• 29:10
Held's has the best jerky I've ever had in my life. Uh, in a pinch, Foundation Bar has some pretty fantastic maple spicy jerky- Mm, mm. Jerky... which I didn't think it was gonna be nearly as good as it was.
• 29:22
Jamaican jerky. And they do have Jamaican jerky too- And I always get Jamaican jerky... which is really good... which is always awesome, awesome, awesome.
• 29:28
I've been going to this bar forever, and I just one day was like, "Did you guys start carrying jerky behind the bar?" He's like, "We've had jerky forever." [laughs] I forgot where theirs is from. Exactly.
• 29:38
Yeah, I forgot too. Yeah. [laughs] The same place that goes like- Is it Bunzel's or somewhere? Has it been, has it been, uh, you know, okay, Pabst bottles for two bucks? Is that, like, new? No? No. Forever.
• 29:50
Never tried anything like that. And it's like, I've never paid attention. Every time I go into the goddamn place, it's always been like, "Okay, I gotta buy, like, a $9 super [gags] toxic- Mai Tai. Mai Tai...
• 30:02
Mai Tai," you know, just super- Speaking of drinking Mai Tais, we had a Dave on the show a while ago... moving like Hattie, you surely wanna lay me please. That's true... hello.
• 30:10
Schabowski should be coming on the show, speaking of Mai Tai mystery. I saw him on The Rampage. Oh, I glanced by him. I didn't actually get to talk to him.
• 30:17
Uh- Sam that was in yesterday said there was a guy that he thinks may ride longer and better wheelies than him for his first time in his life, and that it was a guy he's like... I said, "What did he look like?"
• 30:27
He's, "I don't know. He was dressed as Santa." [laughs] I'm like, "Ooh, I suppose that does make it hard to figure out, now doesn't it?" So- I thought he could've been Aristotle. He's like, "Nope, didn't.
• 30:35
It was a guy who was older." Not Aristotle. Oh, if Aristotle. Oh, I would, mm. So Aaron, what's your go-to, uh, beef jerky? Oh, yeah, yeah Um, so we, we get this...
• 30:44
I used to live in Northeast Minneapolis, and, um, there's this little Polish market called Centers, and it was the best 'cause you could get, like, the best brats- Oh...
• 30:55
the cheapest, s- strangest, like, like Polish vodkas, Russian vodka. I've... I can't even... I'm not even gonna pretend to know how to pronounce those words, but 10 bucks for a bot- like a liter or so.
• 31:06
You get your sauerkraut, get your brats, get your beef jerky, get your cheap vodka. Oh, freaking sign me up, man. And the, the, the, the jerky, the... This kid behind the meat counter was one...
• 31:15
It was a family-run store. Yeah. This kid behind the meat counter, this guy's like, you know, flat brim, like Chicago White Sox hat. He's like, "Yo, dude, what's up?" I'm like, "Nothing. Just buying some brats, man."
• 31:24
He's like, "You, you ever have beef jerky?" I was like, "No." He's like, "Here you go." [smacks lips] So I got my brats, threw the beef jerky in my mouth, walked away. I turned around and bought a pound of it right then.
• 31:32
[laughs] It was, it was oddly- Yeah... and it was, the, it was... It's a stranger beef jerky. It's not fully cured, so the guy's like, "You gotta refrigerate it."
• 31:39
But, like, for, like, fat bike rides or whatever, just dicking around in the woods with your friends, like packing in. Oh, yeah. Perfect. And it's like a, it's like a little mini steak. Mm-hmm. It was- Sure...
• 31:46
the best I've ever had. On the road, however, um, I've had, like, mixed results with, like, local beef jerky. I've had some stuff that's like shoe leather and stuff that's been pretty good. Oh.
• 31:55
But honestly, I, I'm not endorsing... I don't get paid by Jack Link's, but the Jack Link's teriyaki at a, at a gas station- That's kind of a... Yeah... it's like a Budweiser. Right.
• 32:04
You know, you go, you go anywhere in the world, a Budweiser is a Budweiser, you know? It's- Yeah, and I-... it's not the best- But, yeah... but it doesn't, it's not gonna get- It's passable... it's passable.
• 32:12
Well, I'm gonna go into the future then and bring some jerky for you to try yesterday. Yesterday. [laughs] Awesome. It was- How was it? It was delicious. [laughs] Yeah, I think you'll find it very good.
• 32:22
[laughs] 'Cause I think I still have a little left at home. Yeah. I'll look. Ghost pepper? Uh, no. I got the, uh, Jamaican jerk, and I think I got some just black pepper.
• 32:32
The- Jamaican jerk from Foundation just works out... the Jamaican in at Helds is- Just saying... pretty outstanding. Ev- everything at Helds is fantastic. It's crazy. Yes. Um, their bourbon brats are- Ooh. Yeah... whoa.
• 32:45
They f-... Yeah. We're on that cooking show again. Yeah, I guess so. [laughs] Once again, we've digressed to jerky. Whatever. [laughs] Hey, what doesn't go well with bikes and beer? It's a full spectrum- Jerky...
• 32:57
you f- Yeah, it's a-... full spectrumers. Yeah. [laughs] Speaking of full spectrum- I didn't wanna get explicit...
• 33:05
you could get your full spectrum of fat bike fun at the Fatter by the Lake freaking fat bike event [laughs] down there. January 3rd. It's gonna be fatter. It's a- Yeah, 3rd through the 5th...
• 33:15
it's a huge ass, it's a huge ass fat ass- Do you, you know-... bike thing... bike rodeo and race Do you think there'll be doping- [laughs] I just totally wanted to swear so badly...
• 33:25
at this race now that Illinois is gonna have legalized the marijuana? Oh, that's right. Do you think they'll be doping at the- Holy moly. That's not what doping means. Well, it is if you're smoking dope.
• 33:35
[laughs] There's, there's gotta be some type As there that dope just to win a local fat bike race, I'd think. What? I wouldn't be surprised. My whole, my whole opinion on that is- I totally would...
• 33:44
if you wanna smoke weed- Oh... and go race and still win- But I'm not talking about that kind of doping... that's like... And I know that's not what you... But it's like- [laughs]...
• 33:52
they, they should be applauding you for having the disadvantage of being stoned while riding. Right, right. [laughs] Just like- You still won. How did you do that? Yeah. I don't- He forgot his shoe, and he still won.
• 34:00
[laughs] Or, or, or you could be like this, going like... Of course, this is what happens. This is the world. And is it considered, like is it- Um. [laughs]...
• 34:10
is it considered, like a, a, an, an, an advantage if said racer is just high 24/7 anyways? Like, if that's- I don't know. Ask the NBA. Let's see how those guys do. Wow. Dude, for real. You know, come on, man.
• 34:22
Like, this guy's normal. [laughs] For real. Yeah. Yeah. If he wasn't- There's no default if he wasn't that... if he wasn't high, he'd probably be in jail or something, you know, to be honest, you know?
• 34:27
Well, if people are gonna say that they smoke it because their body hurts, then I think it's an advantage. True. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Hmm. Sure. I, I just hit my- Didn't Willie Nelson say-...
• 34:35
I just hit my head on the rim, man. Yeah. You know? Didn't Willie Nelson say he smokes weed to keep him from killing people? Yeah. Now he has to stop- Yeah, and now he's just gonna have animals... smoking weed.
• 34:44
Now he's gonna start killing people. Yeah, or eating stuff. I don't think he- He, he went an awful long time. Well, no. How old is he? 80? Gotta be in his 80s. 83? Yeah, in his 80s. 83 years old.
• 34:55
But- Did he really quit though? No, I- I heard those were false... well, no, I, uh, the, the smoking. He couldn't wear that out. The smoking. Well, now he's got probably edibles that are like 10 times as- The smoking.
• 35:03
Yeah. Exactly. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. It's like, it's not that he's not smoking. He's like, he's like, "Ooh, hallelujah." Speaking of, does anybody need a gummy bear? "Hallelujah." You know.
• 35:12
[laughs] Oh, yeah, we don't wanna replay last week's episode. That was my issue with, um, Global Fat Bike Day. I time traveled.
• 35:18
I, like, all of a sudden I lost, like six hours because of some, uh, some edibles that I had, and I was like, "Oh my God, it's like 11:00 and I'm snoring on the couch. I... What the hell happened?" Oh, no.
• 35:27
I- Little relaxation. E- e- everything, like, came to a head at [clicks tongue] maybe about 6:00 at night. It's like whatever liquor, beer, and wine [laughs] that, like...
• 35:46
C- and it just cascaded in quick, and it was like- Into, at Zion? No. Oh. Like, uh, on, in this River West- Oh, gotcha... flavorful area, and I just, like, suddenly I'm like, "Whoa,"
• 35:58
like, "I have to go home now and lay down." [laughs] I'm like, I'm like, "Oh, okay. I wouldn't do-" And the ANC- I started- It's always a, always a good decision when you think that...
• 36:05
I was like, "Ah, I started at 9:00, and I gotta just go down." The, the rule of thumb when snowboarding is if you think you're too tired to do that last run, don't do that last run. Mm-hmm. Pack your board up.
• 36:16
It's like, 'cause you're going to hurt yourself. You can have another beer. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Or bloody- You can't have another run, though. You don't want to do another run. I've, I've- You, you, you just hurt yourself...
• 36:24
I have hurt myself because I- But I had my run. I had to do my run from, like, uh- River West home... e- essentially here. Yeah... you know, like a mile. I'm pretty sure you can do that on cruise control, dude. Oh, yeah.
• 36:35
The drunk able robot took me there. Yeah. And, uh- [laughs] I have seen you riding by me. You were, uh- I'm like, "Oh, there goes JK." "Hey, fuck off." Yeah. Yeah, he rides pretty darn straight usually. There's...
• 36:46
I, I have a, a fantastic, like-... big brother drunk Aaron that kind of comes in and takes care of me when I get in that position. [laughs] And like, I'm like, I get home, I lock the door, my bike is safe.
• 36:56
I drink a bunch of water. My keys are in my shoe. My cell phone's in my shoe plugged into a charger. Like, what the hell? It's like Martha Stewart, like, taking care of me, like, when I get wasted or something.
• 37:04
Like, what the hell is going on? But I'm- No, you get the, uh- I'm proud of myself... no, the key- I like that he throws your cell phone in your shoe so, so you don't say anything stupid on the- No, my...
• 37:10
That's right, yeah... on the interwebs. That's right. [laughs] My, my keys- By the way... my keys go in the vegetable crisper somehow. Uh-huh. Yeah. [laughs] So [laughs] it's like- It's got controlled humidity, man...
• 37:19
hmm. Yeah. I'm like, "Oh, where the hell are my fucking keys? Where... I mean-" Of, well, of course they're by the produce. Next to the guava. [laughs] Guava? Of course- You know, of course I would have them there...
• 37:29
I don't know. Threw, threw that out there. I'm really happy to be done with that watermelon beer. [laughs] I know, I'm working through this right now. I know, I... No, no, it is. It's a bite. It's good. It's good.
• 37:36
I'm just not into like wa- No, it's not... it's, it's good quality. No, I'm, I'm gr- Dude, I'm grudge drinking. Not my favorite flavor. Look at me. It would be good at four ounces.
• 37:43
[laughs] It would be a good four ounce beer. It's not a very good 12 ounce beer. A little aperitif. Yeah, with a pinky extended. I think we ought to take a photo of that, uh, label, 'cause- Yeah...
• 37:51
I'm not sure we'll find that online anywhere. The flavor, the flavor's not indicative of the flavor. Hey, I... No, don't make fun of them too much.
• 37:56
I mean, yeah, this apparently just was a- Well, it's, it's a good, it's a good beer. Like, it was well made. Yes. I'm glad they did the, I'm glad they did the America as fucking a pink background. Right.
• 38:04
[laughs] Because that's totally what this is. Yeah. It might be as American as fucking Budweiser and Coors.
• 38:07
