- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, well, I have
- 0:08Speaker 1: to tell you it's been a crazy few days since Friday,
- 0:14Speaker 1: July thirty.
- 0:14Speaker 2: First, firstly, we don' about the trade deadline.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We talk about this on the other but I have
- 0:22Speaker 1: to say the personal journey of the last few days
- 0:25Speaker 1: has been insane. For those of you who don't know,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I had undergone a minor endoscopy that was not completed
- 0:35Speaker 1: as we wanted it to be. And maybe this TMI
- 0:38Speaker 1: or over sharing as we like to say, but I've
- 0:41Speaker 1: got got out of my system cause this aboarded endoscopy
- 0:54Speaker 1: is so interesting because it's the first time I haven't
- 0:58Speaker 1: felt any food stuck, but they said there was food
- 1:02Speaker 1: there now.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Just a couple of minutes ago.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I pushed down whatever I was eating and felt the
- 1:07Speaker 1: stricter that I normally feel, dissipate it. DISSI made the
- 1:13Speaker 1: exact same way, So there is a god. God is
- 1:16Speaker 1: good with that. But the insanity of the last few days,
- 1:20Speaker 1: I have to say, is worth podcasting about. Because I
- 1:25Speaker 1: was in the Doskobi suite on Friday morning, then released,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and they had to do it again in September. We're
- 1:34Speaker 1: gonna go through it again but did I slow down?
- 1:38Speaker 1: Ryan Begone? Did I slow down? No? I didn't. I
- 1:40Speaker 1: went to Cityfield for the fortieth anniversary reading of the
- 1:44Speaker 1: Mets in nineteen eighty six, got my tickpicks, actually two
- 1:48Speaker 1: tickets from Tickpick.
- 1:50Speaker 2: One was field.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Level to get to shake the heads of Keith Nandez,
- 1:54Speaker 1: Darryl Strawberry sid for Nandez, Jesse or Roscoe, the man
- 1:59Speaker 1: who called move.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Through the final out of that eighty six World Series.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And I felt myself. Then my buddy Shane.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Dragged me out of the house and said, go to
- 2:10Speaker 1: City Field with me.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, we'll go.
- 2:13Speaker 1: And to me another Shane, Shane Gallvim in the New
- 2:15Speaker 1: York Post, I mean we'll have him on. He works
- 2:17Speaker 1: on the Sunday Post.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Right now, the way.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I'm talking is the most energized I felt in four
- 2:24Speaker 1: to five days. I swear this moment right here. I
- 2:27Speaker 1: don't know if it's relief emotionally because the food seems
- 2:30Speaker 1: to be unstuck or whatever, but I feel stronger again.
- 2:35Speaker 1: In the last twenty minutes here, I feel stronger and
- 2:41Speaker 1: I digress. After running around Saturday Sunday, I took it
- 2:48Speaker 1: a bit easier Monday. But then George Lombard gets called
- 2:52Speaker 1: up last night and Ryan and I were there for
- 2:55Speaker 1: that again, things a tick pick with its great deals,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and we were seeing my longtime friend at the Yankees shop,
- 3:03Speaker 1: Rose Marie final Blate. It was awesome to have her
- 3:09Speaker 1: meet my buddy Ryan, my friend, my colleague Ryan. Then
- 3:12Speaker 1: we went to Billy's and I felt twenty five again,
- 3:15Speaker 1: even though I'm thirty five.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Almost to how that happened.
- 3:20Speaker 1: It was just a throwback kind of night, much like
- 3:23Speaker 1: Derek jeters a you know, first homer in ninety six
- 3:26Speaker 1: was a throwback to last night, the way Lombard Junior
- 3:29Speaker 1: hit his homer, his first step back. But I have
- 3:36Speaker 1: to say talking about this is cathartic. That's why I
- 3:44Speaker 1: have this podcast. I can just get it out there
- 3:48Speaker 1: that even as I talk about those who are adapting,
- 3:52Speaker 1: I always have to adapt as well. And maybe it's
- 4:00Speaker 1: eating less crappy food, which I vowed to do two
- 4:03Speaker 1: years ago, but I'm starting to work my way back
- 4:06Speaker 1: into that. Maybe it's you know, drinking more water and
- 4:15Speaker 1: not having a boat on a mountain dew every day.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I don't know, but last night at Billy's felt like
- 4:27Speaker 1: multiple things. It felt like, all right, I gotta just
- 4:30Speaker 1: do this and see how my energy is and see
- 4:33Speaker 1: how I feel after it. So let me. Let me
- 4:37Speaker 1: just throw my crutches down and you know, do the
- 4:38Speaker 1: handstand and crunched down and all that. But it also
- 4:42Speaker 1: was a moment of It also was a moment of
- 4:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna live life to the fullest. Stuck esophagus or
- 4:55Speaker 1: not strained left side that I've been dealing with the
- 5:00Speaker 1: last few days, probably since competing, I'm not gonna let
- 5:05Speaker 1: that stop me. Like that is the mentality.
- 5:09Speaker 2: As I said on.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Instagram, Alex janyc One, what's your Instagram, Alex, Alex chanyc One,
- 5:16Speaker 1: The bounce back game continues to be strong, and I
- 5:19Speaker 1: pray it always is. I pray that every time I
- 5:22Speaker 1: go in for something, I come out twenty times stronger
- 5:25Speaker 1: and just keep going and just keep going because that
- 5:30Speaker 1: is the fabric of my life. That is the essence
- 5:33Speaker 1: of who I am. I don't let much stop me.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I almost did Sunday. I'm glad Shane dragonma as you know,
- 5:42Speaker 1: we gotta go to sleep, yo. YEA, all right, fie,
- 5:44Speaker 1: you're coming out of West west Chester. Will go.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And it'd be a nice day.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And then I went to do shake it Off with Lucas.
- 5:52Speaker 1: With Mert and Lucas, I got did that sound by
- 5:56Speaker 1: the week too. This week remind me of that. But
- 6:00Speaker 1: as I was listing out exactly what I did since
- 6:03Speaker 1: Friday's health, I wouldn't call it scare, but it was
- 6:07Speaker 1: a warning. I was reminded, Man, I never slowed down.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I never want to slow down, and I never can
- 6:16Speaker 1: slow down. Albeit I'll probably be going right home the
- 6:18Speaker 1: next few days because we got Old Timers Day Saturday,
- 6:22Speaker 1: so I want to be there for that. But if
- 6:24Speaker 1: you talk to me about an hour and a half ago,
- 6:26Speaker 1: I would not be feeling this good or I would
- 6:29Speaker 1: not be sounding this good. So I wanted to save
- 6:31Speaker 1: it because I've been feeling retrospective that yes, I am
- 6:37Speaker 1: getting older, and it's vulnerable to talk about feeling like
- 6:41Speaker 1: I'm getting older, feeling like everybody part after I dance
- 6:44Speaker 1: on the dance floor is going to fall apart at
- 6:47Speaker 1: some point. It's a natural fear, I guess, a natural concern.
- 6:54Speaker 1: But it also is that I'm trying to turn back
- 7:04Speaker 1: the clock when my body's starting to feel like it's
- 7:07Speaker 1: getting older and That is what I want to say here,
- 7:11Speaker 1: is that, yes, my body feels like it's getting older,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and that scares the crap out of me. But you
- 7:17Speaker 1: know what, I'm still gonna go to Billies. I'm still
- 7:20Speaker 1: gonna travel everywhere and do everything I can and be
- 7:26Speaker 1: realist about it at the same time. But now it's
- 7:32Speaker 1: it's more than just you know, having fun. It's about
- 7:37Speaker 1: the mindset that, yes, the body's getting older and I
- 7:40Speaker 1: can feel that and it scares me. But you know what,
- 7:45Speaker 1: I'm not gonna le stop me from going out there,
- 7:49Speaker 1: you know, of the yanksmen in the World series, going
- 7:51Speaker 1: back to the Billies and doing the fun I had last night,
- 7:56Speaker 1: because that is my essence. And am I saying for
- 8:03Speaker 1: this first time on this podcast. I feel like I'm
- 8:05Speaker 1: fighting my body clock a little bit. A little bit.
- 8:09Speaker 1: It's gotten me thinking why am I so sore? Normally, I,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you know, heal up pretty fast. Why after jumping around
- 8:22Speaker 1: all that time, do I feel the leaches and pains?
- 8:26Speaker 1: That's something a eighty or ninety year old should be
- 8:29Speaker 1: feeling now a thirty five year old or a thirty
- 8:33Speaker 1: four and thirty four year old and eleven months or whatever.
- 8:40Speaker 2: But This is more Ganthard to.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Talk about than the news. I can go into the
- 8:45Speaker 1: mong Dami grocery store ide disaster, I can go into
- 8:50Speaker 1: whether actually gonna Baumi ranting up and know this is
- 8:52Speaker 1: important to me because this is the thing that's been
- 8:55Speaker 1: weighing on my mind the last few days since I
- 8:58Speaker 1: was awakened.
- 9:02Speaker 2: By my doctor.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I love my doctor, by the way, he's great. He
- 9:05Speaker 1: said we couldn't do the procedure because there's food there,
- 9:11Speaker 1: and that happened in twenty twenty because of a steak
- 9:14Speaker 1: I ate the night before.
- 9:16Speaker 2: But it's never happened where something stuck and I didn't
- 9:18Speaker 2: feel it.
- 9:19Speaker 1: So that was weird issue number one that I've had
- 9:23Speaker 1: to overcome. But if you see me on the dance floor,
- 9:30Speaker 1: part of it is because, yeah, I want to do it.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Part of it is because I want to prove to
- 9:34Speaker 1: myself I've still got it and I'm not gonna let
- 9:36Speaker 1: anything stop me. But also part of it is saying, body,
- 9:39Speaker 1: I know you're getting older. I know you're getting older.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I feel it, but I'm not going to stop doing
- 9:44Speaker 1: the things I love to do, the things I want
- 9:46Speaker 1: to do in this life. I've seen mortality in front
- 9:53Speaker 1: of me. The last few years, I've been rattled by it.
- 9:57Speaker 1: My dad's passing, losing Max at age thirty one, losing
- 10:02Speaker 1: all our friends at such a young age, you know, Michelle, Jasmine, Hillary,
- 10:08Speaker 1: We just lost Carlos. I believe we lost Harry Golberton,
- 10:12Speaker 1: the guy walked behind me in the in the graduation
- 10:15Speaker 1: in two thousand and nine, or roll behind me. We're
- 10:20Speaker 1: losing people in the Vescartian community and that freaks me
- 10:23Speaker 1: out because now my peers are starting to go before me,
- 10:29Speaker 1: and that that really has done a number, especially Max,
- 10:36Speaker 1: because I remember.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I was watching a TV at a bar either day
- 10:41Speaker 2: or two.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Nights and then oh and we lost Danny this year.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I mean, come on, it's not been easy. But I
- 10:48Speaker 1: remember with Max's loss, specifically singing at a bar. This
- 10:57Speaker 1: was before I stopped rinking entirely and con and playing like,
- 11:00Speaker 1: oh my god, this kid was just a month younger
- 11:04Speaker 1: than me, a month younger than me, And that's when
- 11:11Speaker 1: I realized mortality. That's when I felt mortality hit my face.
- 11:20Speaker 1: That's when I felt it. Am I scared of it?
- 11:29Speaker 1: I'm not scared of that. I'm scared of the eventual,
- 11:36Speaker 1: not happening anytime too soon. But I would argue that
- 11:48Speaker 1: with the body feeling older, Okay, the clock feels like
- 11:54Speaker 1: it's going faster, and maybe it's all in my head
- 11:58Speaker 1: right now, but it feels like the clock is just
- 12:02Speaker 1: going faster for me. And I'm not ready for my
- 12:06Speaker 1: body clock to go fast. I'm not ready for whatever.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I've got to progress and progress and progress, because I
- 12:17Speaker 1: still believe I have a lot to do on this
- 12:18Speaker 1: earth before I go. I've still got pitches to throw,
- 12:27Speaker 1: baskets to make, field goals, to make friends, to see
- 12:31Speaker 1: and reconnect with, championships to witness. I'm not done yet.
- 12:37Speaker 1: So as much as my body's telling me I'm getting older,
- 12:40Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let it stop me. I mean, this
- 12:43Speaker 1: was a lot of travel I did this year alone
- 12:46Speaker 1: from May until you know, recently Cooperstown, Saratoga, and unlike
- 12:53Speaker 1: years when I've done these trips with my dad, doing
- 12:57Speaker 1: it solo took a lot out of me. I was
- 13:02Speaker 1: gonna go to Chicago last week to see the cubs
- 13:04Speaker 1: in the eggs and maybe the White Sox and the eggs,
- 13:07Speaker 1: but I said, boy, I've done so much traveling between that,
- 13:11Speaker 1: between being an alumni at the Games physically challenged.
- 13:22Speaker 2: To then Saratoga to see the Belmont.
- 13:24Speaker 1: By the way, why are they moving the Preakness to
- 13:26Speaker 1: a Sunday And do they realize that this is selfish
- 13:30Speaker 1: of them to move it farther away from the Derby,
- 13:33Speaker 1: but not the Belmont. And I hope they moved the
- 13:36Speaker 1: Belmont a little bit. It almost ruins the chances of
- 13:39Speaker 1: a triple crown. Anyway, Why started toking for the Belmont?
- 13:44Speaker 1: Went to Philly in July, Philly in July, and all
- 14:04Speaker 1: that go has made me emotional because I realized how
- 14:08Speaker 1: much time and energy was spent by my dad to
- 14:13Speaker 1: bring me to all these places, by my mom to
- 14:16Speaker 1: bring me to all these places, and my stepdad for
- 14:18Speaker 1: supporting me and also bringing me around. And then you know,
- 14:21Speaker 1: at the home front, a lot of energy taken and
- 14:24Speaker 1: ex I don't want to say expense, but.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Put into.
- 14:34Speaker 1: This life.
- 14:37Speaker 2: And so I've sort of inherited that energy and.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Pushed myself forward, and in essence, I finally felt the
- 14:45Speaker 1: body clock and the body tell me, hey, kid, you're
- 14:48Speaker 1: not twenty five, You're not twenty three anymore. You're going
- 14:52Speaker 1: to be thirty five years old and I know I
- 14:56Speaker 1: shouldn't be talking like this is a thirty five year old,
- 14:58Speaker 1: but as I've said years ago, I've often felt my
- 15:01Speaker 1: leg was working double because I only have one, and
- 15:07Speaker 1: this this marvel. I've always considered my body a medical marvel,
- 15:14Speaker 1: but it is. The medical marvel of my body is
- 15:21Speaker 1: just remarkable, and I'm grateful to be here for thirty
- 15:30Speaker 1: four plus years. I'm scared to go, but with my
- 15:40Speaker 1: body clock telling me, hey kid, you're getting older, that
- 15:44Speaker 1: just fires me up to act younger and be doing
- 15:47Speaker 1: things I did in my twenties, like going to Billies, like,
- 15:51Speaker 1: you know, traveling around while I can.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Experiencing everything I want to.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to get to the All Star Game
- 16:02Speaker 1: in twenty twenty seven in Chicago. Part of me is
- 16:05Speaker 1: motivating because I know my dad will want to be
- 16:07Speaker 1: there that year. It's Wrigley Field. And yet, and yet,
- 16:19Speaker 1: the key to all of this is not only adapting,
- 16:23Speaker 1: but putting yourself first, putting your health first. When I
- 16:29Speaker 1: got back from Cooper's and I said, you know what,
- 16:32Speaker 1: there's a little inflammation on my right side. I want
- 16:34Speaker 1: to check out well, it led to Friday, which told
- 16:37Speaker 1: me I had food in my esophagus. Well, guess what
- 16:42Speaker 1: we're working on getting that food down. In fact, today
- 16:45Speaker 1: I felt some kind of breakthrough with that. But these
- 16:51Speaker 1: things have to be managed as you get older.
- 16:55Speaker 2: And my management.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Started way years ago, way years ago, and I don't
- 17:04Speaker 1: just have to be managed even closer as I get older.
- 17:09Speaker 1: But in that health first mindset, in that taking care
- 17:12Speaker 1: of my body mindset, in that listening to my body mindset,
- 17:17Speaker 1: I'm not gonna stop being the essence of who I am.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I am that colleague that jumps on the dance floor
- 17:27Speaker 1: at the first site, because that's just what I'm used
- 17:29Speaker 1: to doing. Sides hurting it all. I still did it,
- 17:33Speaker 1: wet floor at all. I still did it at thirty
- 17:36Speaker 1: four years old, just like I was twenty four, twenty
- 17:39Speaker 1: twenty one and a littler than that, because I'm not
- 17:46Speaker 1: gonna let my body clock tell me. I'm not telling
- 17:48Speaker 1: me to lose my essence because I've got a lot
- 17:52Speaker 1: more to do, a hell have a lot more to do,
- 17:59Speaker 1: and as Louke Eric did, I've got an awful lot
- 18:03Speaker 1: to live for and so come with me as we
- 18:10Speaker 1: continue the.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Drive to thirty five.
- 18:13Speaker 1: And that is my message tonight at one leg A
- 18:16Speaker 1: Ballex Media,
