• 0:03
Weekly dose of fat, show number 47 for [laughs] Friday, March 13th, 2015.
• 0:11
[upbeat music] Broadcasting from the Fat Bike Fortress of Fattitude in Milwaukee's Riverwest, it's your weekly dose of fat with your hosts Sven and Gnomez.
• 0:38
Spring is in the air, and that gets me thinking, you know, myself and many of my friends kind of brought into focus when I visited NABS, that I think we all sort of look like gnomes.
• 0:54
So you're like Gnomez? Gnomez? Gnomez. Gnomez. It's the N is, instead of the N is silent, the N isn't there. Right. [laughs] Good morning, everybody.
• 1:09
[laughs] To add some spice to our awesome sauce, we've got JK Livin in the studio. Saucy. Secret sauce. Mama sauce. Our show is sponsored by Surly.
• 1:21
There's a thousand stories about bikes and rocket ships by the world's greatest dreamers. Sss. Right now you can save $150 off any Surly complete bike.
• 1:35
Learn more about the Surly Superfan Coupen at surlybikes.com. That's a sweet deal. Mm-hmm. Uh-huh. Yeah. Well, JK, what was we gonna blow everybody's mind with this week, yo? Grab your socks and hose and pull.
• 1:54
This week we have another freaking champion on the effing show. This time it's a US National Champion of the Fat Bike Birky, straight out of Hillside in South Anchorage, Will Ross. Ross, Ross, Ross, Ross.
• 2:09
Well, we've got beer and then of course beards. Eh, come on. We'll have Vince from Chumba, USA, who's gonna be calling in to talk about Texas's, Texas's, first fat bike race- Yeah... the Fat Sandy.
• 2:27
Texas tea. [laughs] Texas Sandy. We've grilled up some links for y'all just how you like them, all fat and smoke-y. And we'll be taking calls at 818-918-2453.
• 2:45
That's 818-918-2453. All right, this is the wicked beer segment. [singing] Segmentation of the beer situation. So enough of this fluffer beer action. Mm-hmm. I did enjoy the, uh- The fluffer beer was a good one- Yeah...
• 3:03
I gotta say. This is something that Gomez picked up when we were at, uh, Frost Bike, so it's been languishing in the cooler. From Deschutes, Inversion IPA.
• 3:13
However, owing to the fact that it's coming up on, uh, the Saint Patty's Day, ya bastard- [laughs]... uh, JK picked up something special. Tell us all about that beer.
• 3:24
Uh, straight out of Janesville, Wisconsin, Gray's Brewing Company's Busted Knuckle Irish Ale. Ar. Oh, wait. Aye. [laughs] Aye. Aye, laddie. [laughs] That's not a goddamn pirate beer, you daft bastard.
• 3:39
[laughs] So it's a red ale, but it's 5.2 and it's Saint Patty's Day. Gonna... Hey, we should toast the new Pugsley. Toast the new Pugsley World Champion, Jeff O'Gara. Pimp Daddy Supreme.
• 3:57
Pimp Daddy. Pimp Daddy. Did, did you talk to him on the phone today? I, I talked to him this week. He could not have been a happier guy to win the Pugsley World Championship. He's off to wrestling nationals.
• 4:10
Yeah, he's a coach at Luther College. He's like, that's a, he's a badass wrestler. I would not put my mom up against him, for sure. [laughs] Yeah, I called, I, I did talk to him on the phone.
• 4:18
I was like, "So I want you to just do a one-handed handstand with the ax in the other hand, and we're, and balancing your bike on one of your feet, and with the standard wrestling uniform." [laughs] He was like, "Okay."
• 4:36
Who's gonna come and take a picture of that? So I'll be walking away. Hey, what's Nikki doing right now? Let's get her to take a photo- There you go... of all that athletic ability. And he could actually do that.
• 4:43
I, I would trust that Jeff would, that would be something that... Don't ever get in a derby with Jeff. No. Jeff... Or if you get in a derby with Jeff, right away you just yell out, "Get O'Gara! Get O'Gara!"
• 4:56
[laughs] He'll still pull through. Yeah. So, uh, what's up with this beer? It is a Irish style ale. Yeah, Irish red ale. It's really not too- Much... overwhelming. It's not too much- Yeah... whatever that is.
• 5:11
[laughs] Yeah. Yeah. It's, you, you can tell that it's not your normal beer water. It's got a little flavor to it. Right? It's, it's the lighter of the ale side, which is, you know, flavorful beer. Yeah.
• 5:25
Beer with more flavor. Beer with- More flavorful... more flavorful. It certainly d- [laughs] It definitely- And that makes the enjoyment enjoy more. [laughs] The, the f- It's got a leprechaun on the, on the label...
• 5:38
the, the, the 52, the whatever, 73 was the score. Yeah. Beer advocate. The 5.2 is the AB- AB, AB- Right... how drunky you get. 32 intergalactic bitter girlfriend units. Which, I- Yeah...
• 5:53
it's easy to tell it's definitely not an IPA. It does not, which I am now- It's a-... kind of happy with, especially since that was our fluffer. [laughs] Yeah. We had an IPA fluffer. I had, I had-
• 6:04
Wait up, wait up [laughs] We don't even wanna, like, get into how many drinks I had before this show. [laughs] Just saying. Hey, Chris Zito, thanks for getting Gomez all tuned up before the show.
• 6:17
[laughs] Show prep, show prep, show prep. So the, the beard segment of our show here, of the, actually the beard segment of our beard and beer segment- Of our beard show-... of the subsegment of the segment...
• 6:29
with beards... uh, we're gonna talk about the, uh, beard contest that JK and now Sven- Sven, Swen... is going to enter. And- I'm, I'm not actually- And talking- Yeah, go ahead... you into it.
• 6:43
You, you want me to jump up there? You know, I- Well, you don't know. The thing is, the, the, the house can only hold so much space. The house is in the house.
• 6:52
And that was one of the concerns of one of the hosts or whatever it was. Was that people would not enter if they were in the place? Well, no, that we would overflow their capacity.
• 7:03
That, yeah, yeah, that non- Well, I think competing- I don't know... in the event without any expectation of winning is certainly within the realm of all of our- Yeah... ballywigs here. We have the beards.
• 7:12
We should enter the contest and/or not show up at it. So- Somebody's [laughs] somebody's gotta take the pictures, though. [laughs] Oh. There will be pictures.
• 7:20
I will ha- I'm, I'm gonna have beard- There are always- Yes... being pictures being taken- I will have the beard cam... all over the place. It's just gonna poke out right there. Oh. "Hey, what's up? How you doing?"
• 7:27
Check it out. So we're, we're talking about going to ride the beach in Port Washington. Zito's on board. You know, like a Sunday service. Yep.
• 7:36
And then get some food, get a little liquored up, and get ready to go to the beard contest. Beard contest. Get additional, you know, additional funskis and beard contesting, et cetera.
• 7:47
And then maybe we just go crazy and go down by the river and handle some frogs. So two rides in one day, that's just crazy talk. [laughs] That's crazy talk. And it's on a Sunday. I know, but, you know- Yeah, buddy.
• 8:01
My k- hey, my kids are off on Monday, so I don't have to get up early. Spring is in the air. Spring is in the air. So you can enter this contest with just a mustache.
• 8:09
You can have a full beard under three inches, which [burps] actually, I trimmed my beard, so it might be under three inches. Well, the, do they go with the longest part or the side trimmy?
• 8:20
'Cause you're still pretty ra- My long-... ra- ra- ra- rashy down on the bottom. All right. Well, it, I don't know. Do you believe the judges- Whiskerinas, which I... just bearded ladies. Bearded ladies. Ew.
• 8:31
Bearded, bearded clams are much better than bearded ladies. Partial beard, which is... that could be you. That's what I'm going in. All right. That's one. I'm already register- pre-registered.
• 8:40
I gotta have that on the- All right... on this one. Full beard under eight inches, which I guess would be me. Freestyle facial hair, which is all those weird curly cues and, you know, some- Adornments, jewelry...
• 8:51
some guy turns his beard into a fat bike out of space. Can you use product on your beard? Yeah. [laughs] You can use product on your beard, even for- His- I think all of them...
• 9:01
does freestyle let you put, uh- Adornments and jewelry- Yeah... and beer cans- My daughter wants to-... and fish hooks... weave, like-... and shit like that... beads into my beard, but I don't think it's long enough yet.
• 9:11
It's like, no, maybe when it's longer. [laughs] I did ge- I, I did help her birth. [laughs] That was very Jack Sparrow. [laughs] Why? I don't know. Hey, Jack Sparrow was all right. Hey, you know,
• 9:28
speaking of the freaking beards, [laughs] we still do have our Ice Beard Contest going on. It's in full swing, and the entries are piling up higher than something that's, like [laughs] really- Really tall...
• 9:38
really- The John Hancock building... sort of really tall. That's cool, though. And- We've got a lot of great prizes, and we have more prizes if you guys just call in. It's surprising how many...
• 9:48
Here's what's gonna happen with the new prizes, is that they, we can get a third place now. Yeah. So you can be the third or the second loser and still- [laughs]... get something for your effort.
• 10:00
And by the way, we got, like, 60 entries already. There's some good beards in there. Go out and it's, you know... I'm gonna say doesn't matter when it came from, get me a beard.
• 10:09
I got some guy that sent one from, like, 1989. Yeah. [laughs] There you go. It does, I, there were no restrictions on it except it should be an icy beard. Right. Fair enough. Send it in. There's a link in the show notes.
• 10:20
You know, don't sell the frozen food section of your local grocer short. [laughs] You know? D- well, and that's where the- Get a, get a-... adornments come from, too, because you stick your face- Get a spray bottle...
• 10:31
in a pile of peas and you're good... and, and mist up some, some water and don't breathe too much and, you know. It'll mix vegetables all over the beard. [laughs] That would've been, that would've been some- [laughs]...
• 10:42
something to try for the, uh, in-person beard contest. [laughs] In-personal beard contest. Or start driving north- Let me just stand there... and/or south, depending on which hemisphere you r- you roll on.
• 10:55

• 11:33
When I'm not ripping groomed winter single track, I'm listening to Fat Bike Radio. Please welcome to the radio program 2015 Fat Bike Birkie Champion, Will Ross. Welcome to the show, Will. Oh, thanks.
• 11:45
Thanks for having me. Yeah, thanks for joining us in the studio, man. That's awesome. In the studio. All right. Yeah. You're our first US champion that has come to the studio, so you're our favorite US national champion.
• 11:55
Right on. [laughs] So congratulations on the win last weekend at Fat Bike Birkie. So now you own maybe, like, the Great Lakes National Championship Belt, and Ned owns the USAC Belt.
• 12:08
What do you say we settle this the old-fashioned way, do a little best two out of three falls Indian leg wrestling? I think I got bigger legs than Ned. I'll take him. [laughs] All right. [laughs] Very good.
• 12:20
The, the gauntlet has been thrown down, Ned. Uh, I get questions from, uh, from our gerbils that listen to the show [laughs] And, uh,
• 12:30
you know, one of the, one of the questions that come up for a lot of the guys that are doing well in racing, and since you won, I think it's very pertinent, people wanna know what's up with your bike? How's it set up?
• 12:39
What makes it so fast? Is it, like, the bike or is it the guy? You know. My bike, it's fast. Um, yeah, carbon 907 Whiteout, uh, in green, of course.
• 12:50
It's got the HED rims with Dillinger 4s set up tubeless, so down to 22 and a half pounds. Nice. SRAM XX1, Ergon grips. So nothing somebody couldn't just buy off the- Oh, you-... showroom floor though, basically.
• 13:04
So really the motor's what makes it go fast. You can totally buy it. [laughs] Looks like some Race Face Next carbon rockin' there too, right? Yeah, lots of carbon, lots of Race Face. And it weighs? 22 and a half pounds.
• 13:16
Yeah, yeah. See, get down in that range and they start to feel like real bikes again, don't they? Oh, it's a rocket ship. [laughs] And it seems like Dillinger is the favorite tire of everyone in Anchorage.
• 13:28
Oh, yeah, absolutely. Um, well especially this year with the studability of them. Right. We haven't had any snow, so. So there you go, listeners. That'll make you faster, buy a, buy a 907.
• 13:41
So what we really brought you here for is the story of the race, the tactics and how they worked out.
• 13:48
I don't know how much tactics went down before the turnaround, but maybe pick us up somewhere there before the turnaround and take us all the way to the finish. So yeah, it was a pretty fast start.
• 14:01
It was just one big string of riders until probably, what, four miles in at the power line. And then the hills on the power line, it broke into a group of about 15.
• 14:12
And then a couple riders dropped off between there and the turnaround, so I think at the turnaround we were down to 10. Uh- And was, did you have anybody in that pack?
• 14:22
Was Jamie in that pack or was he- Yeah, my boss and owner of 907 Cycles, uh, Jamie, he was in the pack. Uh, anoth- another Alaskan, John Sundell, and then Jason Lambro, also Alaskan.
• 14:34
Uh, so at the turnaround- Jesse, Jesse Lalonde was in there I think still... yeah, Jesse Lalonde was in there, Ned was in there. Yeah. Brennan Moore. The Lemaire rider. Brennan Moore. Uh, was that Jeff Hall? Jeff Hall.
• 14:46
Hall. Um- He's back from kind of being half-retired a little bit. Fast guy, Jeff Hall. Yeah, he's fast. Yep. He's fast. Um, then a couple other guys I didn't know. Um, one could climb super fast.
• 14:57
He was killing us on the climbs on the way back. But yeah, after the turnaround, Ned, Ned started attacking just as he did last year, but they weren't sticking and hurting quite like they, they were last year.
• 15:08
And I think we also knew we didn't wanna let him get any gap like, like last year, 'cause his 10 seconds last year turned into two minutes pretty quick. Yeah, sure did.
• 15:18
And, and you were the one right behind him last year. Yeah, and yeah, we, both him and I kind of rode alone entirely the wh- the whole way back, and that's, that's not my style. I need, I need a draft.
• 15:29
[laughs] So now had you, had you, your group of Alaskan guys, had you made any kind of tactical agreement to- Mm... work together to hang in there or? I, I'm sure you and Jamie did though, right?
• 15:41
The goal was to hang in there, and Jamie's goal was top 10, and he, he wasn't feeling so good that day. He wasn't feeling good before the race, but he stayed in the top 10 as long as he could. Mm-hmm.
• 15:53
Um, but yeah, the goal was to just not hurt each other, keep us all in that front pack. And it was, it was good. Four Alaskans made the, made the front pack, and yeah, four Alaskans top 10. Cool.
• 16:05
So what finally busted it up and, uh- Oh-... caused you to win?... that, that soft snow at the, the 20K turnaround. So the last 10K of the race, it was really soft, lots of ruts all over the place.
• 16:20
A lot of the 20K-ers had walked up some of the steeper hills. Mm-hmm. And so it was pr- it was really torn up, and that's, those play into my conditions perfectly. Yeah, the sloppier the better, and- So I-...
• 16:33
I just kept it upright. Yeah, I did hear two, uh, potential changes to next year. One is that they're gonna run separate courses. So you're saying the soft stuff played into your strengths? That definitely- Yeah...
• 16:44
played to my favor. Yeah, for sure. I think the other one is they're talking about 1,000 people next year as a cap. Woo. [laughs] Man. That'll be fun. It'll remain the largest fat bike event in the universe.
• 16:55
Yeah, and they, they have the, they have the trail there to keep them separate and handle, I think, up to 1,000. We'll see. Depends on conditions, right?
• 17:06
If it were just today, I mean, just three days after the race or four days after the race, it would be pretty dicey because the temperatures have been up above freezing overnight, so. Yeah.
• 17:18
Yeah, we rode on Sunday on the Sealey Trail, and it was in pretty good shape still, 'cause that night it had gotten down to, like, 20.
• 17:24
So it was still, if you're riding early in the day, that's the nice thing about the way the Birkie's set up is that if you do it early in the day and it had been cold that night, it sets up pretty well still. Oh, yeah.
• 17:33
Thaw, refreeze, and grooming- And packing... makes for a fast course. But I like the idea that the conditions got non-groomed on this perfectly groomed course. [laughs] And that led to, you know, the finish.
• 17:49
That led to Will winning. Oh, it was, yeah, it was nasty. It was- [laughs] So, so Ned took a tumble. How close was he before he went off? Him and I were together.
• 17:57
He actually, he kind of started the surge that broke everything up when we hit the soft snow. Uh, 'cause it was eight of us that hit the soft, soft snow together.
• 18:06
And Ned surged, and I was maybe two or three seconds behind him for, yeah, probably 2 or 3K. Mm-hmm. And then I think that was, that was all he had.
• 18:18
As soon as I got around, then I'd, I hadn't tried to get a gap, but it kind of happened, and then- Sounds like that's when he went down.
• 18:28
Um- Yeah, I think it was within a mile of the finish he said that he had- Right, 2K or- Yeah... one of the two things that I had heard, right? Yep. Yeah, and then in, yeah, in the last 2K the, the, the leads...
• 18:40
Okay, in Alaska we call them snow machines. I hear everywhere else they're snowmobiles. [laughs] So the lead, the lead snow machine, uh, he, uh,
• 18:48
must not have been paying full attention or I don't know what was going on, but he was slowing down and Ned was catching up, so I yelled at him to go, and I caught him off guard and he just full throttled it and rooster spray up in the air.
• 19:02
And so- So he took Ned out with rooster spray? [laughs] No, I, I couldn't see the trail and it was going through a corner. Wow. And I, I ended up riding off the trail at one point, and Ned caught me again.
• 19:14
So then luckily enough there was a, there was a steep hill right after that, and sprinted up the steep hill and got my gap back. All right. There you go. Well, that's the way she freaking goes, boys. I know.
• 19:24
[laughs] So, uh, what else can we look forward to from you and your team in 2016? You think you'll, uh, head up this weekend to the Talkeetna Trio and go for the world championship belt?
• 19:38
I was thinking of doing the trio, but yeah, we'll, we'll see. Uh, Homer Epic is in a week and a half now, so- Oh, cool... might, might head down, do the Homer Epic. They don't have any snow, so- That's a 50-mile race?
• 19:50
It's 100K, so 60-ish- 100K... miles. Right on. Um, but yeah, they don't have any snow, so they're thinking of making it, uh, a beach race. Oh. Which would be pretty fun. 'Cause they- It's a-...
• 20:00
have tons of climbing there I heard on their single track trails. Oh, it's, it's not single track, it's, it's, it's like the Birkie- Mm-hmm... just groomed ski trail. Yeah. But the h- the hills are so steep.
• 20:11
And yeah, you can see them from, like, five miles away and it just looks like a wall. Hmm, cool. Well, right on. We've reached the lightning round of our carnival ride. Are you ready? Sure.
• 20:25
[laughs] Answer the following five questions in rapid succession, starting with tubes or tubeless? Tubeless. Salmon or halibut? Salmon. Flats or clipless? Clipless. Groomed or ungroomed? Yes.
• 20:42
[laughs] And your favorite Mutant Ninja Turtle? Michelangelo. [laughs] All right. Right on. Muchisimas gracias for joining us on the show, Will. Yeah, thanks for having me. Very good.
• 20:53
Yeah, congratulations on the win and thanks for coming into the studio. I know you just had some, uh, some family business in town here. Yeah, yeah. Got the girlfriend's parents live in, uh- Wauwatosa... Wauwatosa. See?
• 21:06
He said it correctly, too. Wauwatosa. 'Cause, you know, you, we get newscasters here all the time from other areas of the country, and they try and say some of the names around here.
• 21:14
I'm sure it's similar up in Alaska, where you get some- Oh, yeah... some interesting names. [laughs] Waukesha. Yeah, or yeah, yeah. Waukesha. Akana Makana Kamana Walk. [laughs] [laughs] I get that one pretty good. Yeah.
• 21:24
Bring the girl named Waukesha from Tosa. So how do you say... Waukesha, Waukesha. So is it, is it Susitna? Is that how you say the river? Susitna. Okay. It's like the Susitania. What, what, where's that river?
• 21:33
[laughs] Andrea named our, named our cat Susitna. Oh, very good. Yeah, Andrea's joining us in the studio in her silent mode.
• 21:41
[laughs] W- Will's lady is joining us just to, uh, to take a look at how it works in the big radio studio. Yeah. There you go. All right. Well, thanks again, Will. Appreciate you being on the show. Yeah, thank you.
• 21:53
Good luck with the rest of your season and hope to see you next year, uh, here at the, uh, Birkie. Yeah, absolutely. You're about to get your weekly dose of Fat Bike Radio.
• 22:04
This is the weekly dose of fat with Sven and Gomez and JK. JK. And callers. And- Callers. [laughs] Rudolph the red- Tell us about the sticker. We're gonna take a caller in just a minute.
• 22:16
Tell us about the stickers, and then we'll go ahead and take our caller. Hey, man, we like to give away stickers. We do. And, uh, people have been asking actually for these stickers, the linearfatbike.com logo on clear.
• 22:29
We got them, like, black ink or white ink, and- By the way, this is the last one of this style. Yeah, exactly. We have to change our logo. Owing to the- Well, we don't have to, but we're just gonna...
• 22:37
owing to the fact that we love Chris Chance. Yeah, exactly. Our homage is, to him is awesome. So, man, so there's three ways for you to get these stickers.
• 22:48
You can call us on the show, ask us a fat bike question, and we'll just be like, "Yeah, you want some stickers?" Bam. "What the hell's a fat bike?" You got a sticker. Uh, see? All you gotta do is ask a question.
• 22:59
"Can I have a sticker?" "May I please have a sticker?" [laughs] You can send us a photo of you, your bike, and a shrubbery. Shrubbery? And the, a shrubbery. Or your friend and his bike and a shrubbery. A nice bath buff.
• 23:13
Uh, or there's the old self-addressed stamped envelope trick. [laughs] What are you juveniles doing exactly? Showing a shrubbery. [laughs] Oh, you had your pants down then, did you? No. Hula lady. Oh, right on.
• 23:27
Shrubbery. So- All right... all of the information you need will be in a link in the story notes. You're prob- you're probably gonna have a story up on the site about it we could link to or something. Probably. Right on.
• 23:38
So we have a caller. Let's see who's on the line. Cha-bow. Chicka-chicka bow wow. Welcome to the radio program. Hey, how's it going? Oh, it's going so good I can't even...
• 23:50
There aren't even words to describe how good it's going. [laughs] Awesome. I, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna guess. I'm gonna make, I'm gonna prognosticate that it's Vince on the line. It is. How are you guys doing? Yay.
• 24:02
I'm one for one, bro. One for one. My hat. Hey, Vince, thanks for calling in. Oh, cool. Vince is from Chubbuck, USA, guys. Yeah, thanks for having us on, guys. So, Vince, you guys- Thanks for having us on.
• 24:14
Uh, wanted to tell you guys a little bit about an upcoming race we have. Um, actually also wanted to thank you guys because we're stoked that fatbike.com is helping to sponsor this event. You said spanked.
• 24:25
Uh, it's called the Fat Bike Sandy Very cool And, uh, one of the things that's really unique about it, uh, is that it's actually Texas' first fat bike race event. Woo-hoo. Unbelievable. Uh, can we say, like, yee-haw?
• 24:39
Yee-haw. [laughs] Yee-haw. I think it's, I think that there's a yee-haw, but you guys are on the ground floor. [laughs] I, hey, Vince, I think it's- Comin' in sponsorin' right away...
• 24:49
Vince, I think it's kinda, I just was surprised that it's actually the first one because with all the great, you know, coastal land you've got down there by Galveston and stuff, I thought for sure somebody would've done something.
• 25:00
But you guys with your rocky terrain- I thought so too... and all your cool stuff. I've searched around, I've searched around and I haven't been able to find anybody else that's done anything.
• 25:09
And, you know, a group out of, uh, the same Houston Forest, uh, came up to us and kind of approached us about working with them to get this race together.
• 25:19
And, um, it's really kind of a unique place because there's actually about 85 miles of pretty much unrideable motocross trail- [laughs]... uh, that's basically unrideable on a regular bike.
• 25:34
And Texas is basically just kinda catching on that, hey, fat bikes are opening up this whole new area of riding here in town.
• 25:41
Uh, so people are getting pretty excited about it and it's really cool to have a race event there. So we're, we're really excited to be a part of it and be sponsoring it.
• 25:49
Uh, sand racing is really an awesome new terrain that people have not really explored very much.
• 25:58
Uh, we- Well, the, I think the cool thing about sand is that a lot of areas of the country that don't get snow have tons of sand. Oh, yeah.
• 26:05
And somewhat the experience is similar in that, that it's, you know, soft and a fat bike is the best thing. And the other thing that's similar is people like- Totally...
• 26:13
to party in the snow and they like to party on the beach. Oh, hell yeah. And now your- [laughs] Oh, yeah... your race, your race actually has a fat bike category, and then you have the plus versus anyone else. Yeah.
• 26:29
Well, it's kind of a interesting thing.
• 26:31
I mean, I mean, our company, Chumba USA, we make both fat bikes and mid fat bikes, and one of the things we've noticed is that just in Texas races and other races we've been to elsewhere in the country, we've seen people popping up more and more on mid fat and on fat bikes racing in just regular actual mountain bike events.
• 26:51
And so when we were talking about having a mid fat race or a fat bike race, well, we really wanted to have a fat bike race, and then we were like, "Well, we shouldn't just segment it so that only those riders can come out.
• 27:03
We wanna encourage more people to get out there and see what fat bikes are like because it's such a growing thing here, um, in our area."
• 27:11
Not a lot of people have seen it yet still, uh, but everybody kind of knows about it and is curious about it, but not everybody's really ridden a bike like that yet.
• 27:18
So we thought it'd be really cool to encourage people to just get out, and what we've done is we've basically made it so the fat bikers will be racing against fat bikers first because we feel like these guys, you know, w- if you're racing on a fat bike, you don't wanna race against a guy that's out on a regular bike.
• 27:35
You wanna go against guys who are churning out the same amount of wheel that you are.
• 27:39
And mid fat guys, they're used to racing against, uh, you know, regular bikes, but this course is different 'cause this course the mid fat really will have a huge advantage over a standard mountain bike. He said huge.
• 27:52
If somebody shows up on a regular cross country bike, oh yeah, it's gonna be a huge difference- [laughs]... not only in, uh, actual footprint, but in actual, actual speed.
• 28:02
The, the course itself is just totally laden in sand. Um, and I don't know, when you think of a sandy course, um, in my mind I think of like, okay, like beach riding or something that's, like, pretty flat.
• 28:15
But the reality is, like, this is a really cool course. It goes up and down. It's got a lot of variation in terrain. Now, we have a, we have a- A lot of really tight corners, a lot of patterns...
• 28:24
we have a lot of ex- we have a lot of experience here of riding sandy trails over in Michigan. Sandy trails. And, uh, yeah, I'm- Awesome...
• 28:31
I'm, I'm really looking forward to, uh, to hearing reports and seeing how this all works out and seeing how the times are between
• 28:41
the, the, uh, what you're calling the mid fat or the, the 29 or, or B+ bikes that- Mm-hmm... that enter versus the fat bikes. I bet you it's really pretty close. Mm-hmm. I bet. And, uh,
• 28:54
another thing that you guys are really doing that, that is super intriguing is you guys last weekend had an overnight demo that, uh- Yeah... uh, talk about that a little bit Well, we went out there and, um...
• 29:08
Well, I mean, we're, we're kind of a unique company in that, you know, we're really focused on a number of things, both with trail bikes, cross country bikes, and fat bikes.
• 29:19
And by nature of all that, we're also really interested in just bike packing and adventure riding.
• 29:25
And we were going down there to do a demo at the race to get people out on the race course and just try to promote the event, and we were thinking creatively of, "Hey, let's, let's get these guys out on an overnight and give this, you, you know, give a group of folks a, a chance to kinda like test the bikes out and see what that's like."
• 29:42
That's so cool. But what it also was, it was also a chance for people to kinda test their gear.
• 29:48
It kinda was a great run to meet other people trying to do the same types of experiences, 'cause it's, it's fun to bike packing around, but it's also, you, you kinda need a community for it to, to build the ideas of where to go and what gear to take and, and how to do it.
• 30:04
And, and it's really cool to see that culture getting started here in Texas. Right on.
• 30:10
That's, that's, that's so in tune with what we feel about the whole grassroots base of fat biking, adventure riding, is that it, it's coming from the people up. It's not the bike industry telling us how we should ride.
• 30:24
Coming from the people. The people. Yeah, so the- The revolution will not be televised... we're- It will, it will be on fat bikes.
• 30:31
[laughs] We're, we're so happy and so proud that we could, uh, that we could be a sponsor of the event and- Help some in our- Yeah, we're-... in our own small way, uh, bring fat biking to, uh, Texas. And do...
• 30:45
Now w- let's go, let's just shift the conversation to coastal... Tejas. [laughs] Yeah, coastal Tejas, man. And, and how I can, uh, how I can come, come down there- Yeah...
• 31:00
and ride, and ride my bike- We need to get you guys down here... and- Galveston. What do you think of Galveston? Where, where's our most likely huckleberry for having fun and riding bikes on the coast?
• 31:10
[laughs] Well, we did an awesome trip, uh, last year, uh, probably about this time of year actually, uh, where we, we drove down to Port O'Connor, which is right on, uh, just like a bay just south of the Houston/Galveston area.
• 31:27
And we took alpaca pack rafts about six miles out, um, early in the morning, left early, uh, paddled our way out to an, uh, basically like a barrier island that's only accessible by boat. Uh, it's called Matagorda.
• 31:44
And, uh, we went out there and, and just tried to ride as much of the island as we could and camp out. We had a great time. It's a really unique and beautiful place. Um, there's just loads of beachfront there.
• 31:57
Um, a ton of the Texas coast is public land so it's, it's very accessible for riding. Uh, but Matagorda was kind of an interesting place for us to go because it's, it's more remote.
• 32:09
Once you're on it, there's no, um, there's no facilities. There's no, um, you know, there's no place to go grab a, a cup of water- Where do I go tinkle?... if you're thirsty. Yeah.
• 32:19
[laughs] That's a, that's, that's, that's a little place that we call heaven. You, you gotta bring it all with you. [laughs] Yeah. And take it all back out, hopefully.
• 32:26
Well, I mean, it's cool that it's so, it's so close to us here, so it's a really unique spot. Killer, man. But it's about the fourth- We, we gotta go experience that... about the fourth route out there.
• 32:36
[laughs] I'm, uh, I'm, I'm putting together a, uh, mobile, uh, fatbike.com HQ. Mobile command post. Mobile command post. Do, do, do, do, do, do, da-ding. [laughs] And we'll be, uh...
• 32:44
I think that one of the first places that I'm gonna head is down to Texas. That seems- Straight south from- Dude... from where we live. Yep. So, uh, ex- That would be awesome. Yeah, that would be cool.
• 32:54
Carry my bike and then I'll just fly in on weekends. Yeah. There you go. [laughs] I got room, I got room for another bike. I got room for another bike. But I, I wanna bring a fat bike.
• 33:02
Well, we've got a pretty wide variety of stuff here to ride, so. Awesome. And, you know, maybe we can meet up somewhere else sometime too, 'cause we like traveling also. Right on. Killer, man.
• 33:11
Um- Yeah, we'd love to show you the beach- Well, I wanted to-... riding up here. I wanted to also kinda give a little shout-out to the people who our race is benefiting. Oh, right.
• 33:20
Um, one, one, uh, it's actually benefiting the St. Vincent Trail Coalition, which is...
• 33:26
These are, this is a group of people that basically makes it so all these trails are rideable, uh, which is just a really awesome local group, um, for that area that, uh, kinda works on access and trail maintenance and coordinating the ability for motorcycles, equestrian, and mountain bikers to be out there.
• 33:44
So we're really stoked to support them 'cause they're, they're pushing for a lot of more, a lot of trail to be built and maintained, and they're really doing a lot of good work.
• 33:53
Um, people in the area are really proud of, of what they've done and it's, it's cool to support them. That's very- And I also wanted to-...
• 33:58
very good that you're supporting trail advocacy 'cause that's, that's just- Oh, yeah... such a great thing. Yeah, would, w- we wouldn't have trails to ride if it weren't for the folks that do that. No kidding.
• 34:09
[laughs] Right on. Give back and do the right thing.
• 34:12
Well, and, and the, the race is also benefiting, um, a gentleman named, uh, Eric R- Richmberger, and, um, he's, he's about to do a ride on the Tour Divide this year and, um, his ride is actually raising money and awareness for the Gift of Hearing Foundation,
• 34:30
uh, which essentially raises money, um, and kinda goes to bat for children who, who have, uh, hearing loss and they help them get, uh, the implants to be able to hear again.
• 34:41
So it's a really amazing thing to be able to, to see him work his butt off on this, [laughs] on the Tour Divide and try and raise awareness for that, get supporters.
• 34:50
So if, uh, any of the listeners out there have a chance, you know, go check out the link, uh, that fatbike.com just posted and you can, you could find more information about Eric's ride and try and support what he's doing and, uh, we definitely would appreciate the help.
• 35:05
Well, very good, man. All right. Thanks, Vince. It's a, it's a win-win-win situation with the, uh, Fat Sandy. Win. That's why we got involved. Yeah. And that's why we love Chumba USA, man.
• 35:15
You guys just get it and you, you kill it with s- stuff like this. Plus they had that good song, the Chumba Wamba. Yeah. [laughs] That was such a cool song. [laughs] Or was that tub thumping or whatever it was?
• 35:24
That was a good song, you guys. You did a great job on that. And that. But awesome. [laughs] It was about Sandy. Well, thank you, guys. We r- we definitely appreciate it. Well, cool, man.
• 35:33
Thanks for calling into the show and, uh, man, we, we look forward to hearing a report and I look forward to- Sounds good... busting across and, uh, you showing me your- Busting across and ooh...
• 35:44
dismount out of, your, your graceful dismount out of, out of your alp- alpaca raft and comparing it to mine. [laughs] Yeah, but that's gonna be a contest. That's right.
• 35:53
You guys should have something on that, like five bucks, see whose is better or something. We'll be racing to shore so we don't get pictures of it. [laughs] Yeah. Well, luckily they're pretty hard to flip over.
• 36:05
Oh, that's good. So at least when you're out on the water they're pretty stable. [laughs] Cool, cool. All right, man. Sounds good. Thanks for calling in. Yeah. Love to have you guys down. Thanks for having us.
• 36:13
Give us a shout, you know, to keep up- I'll talk to you. I'll let you know how the race goes. Keep up with us too, you know. Give us a call every few weeks, see what's going on.
• 36:19
If there's something interesting, we'd love to hear about it. Oh, sure. I, I have interesting things coming down the pipe. [laughs] Right on, man. Very, very shortly. Very, very shortly.
• 36:30
Dang- dangle that carrot out in front of our listeners so they come back in a couple of weeks. [laughs] All right, Vince. All right. Sounds good, gents. Have a good night. Peace out, man. See ya. So long. Right on.
• 36:41
Vince from Chumba, folks. They have a lot of stuff going on down there in Texas Tejas Hey, guess what? You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio
• 36:52
Up here in the, in the great northern area, uh, Gomez and I, like, eh, escaped almost 180 degrees from each other [laughs] for the weekend. [laughs] It's like- Yeah...
• 37:01
he went, like, due south almost on kind of a little bit of an angle. I went due north almost on a little bit of the other angle. Right And almost six hours each, give or take, so- Yeah... Gomez went down to NABS.
• 37:11
Uh, that's the North American, uh, Hand-Baked Bread Show. [laughs] Or s- Hand-built Oh, wait. Hand-Built Bicycle Show. [laughs] Bicycle Show. Uh, what'd you find down there at the old bread show?
• 37:23
You know, I uncovered a big scoop. You know, they don't just use their hands. They actually use tools. Speaking of tools [laughs] Man, man. No, it's, uh, you know- Man, oh, man... I, I put that thing together.
• 37:38
It's, it, I had got this thing in my, the, the idea in my head, this thing up that's above my neck, that, uh, it was bike fashion week, and [microphone thudding] [laughs] Please speak into the microphone, sir.
• 37:54
[laughs] Speaking into ze microphone. What are you doing with the Velcro? Who's doing that? That's me. Cut that shit out. [laughs] Come on. [imitates choking sound] Sorry. [laughs] Somebody's going like this, too.
• 38:10
[laughs] God damn it. Hey, everybody. This is the- With your beak pressed against the window... dose of Fat- There is no birdseed for you today... Bike- Only death.
• 38:25
[fists thudding] Hey, little doggy, with your nose pressed [laughs] against the window. There is no dog food for you today, only death. [fists thudding] [snaps fingers] [laughs] I forgot about the snap.
• 38:41
[laughs] Ah, it's all coming back now. It's all coming back now with the snap, snap at the end. All right. So how was that NABSy NABS area that you were at?
• 38:51
[laughs] Well, Fat Bike won the best mountain bike, uh, of the show competition, Retrotec- How can they?...
• 38:57
my friends, Curtis Inglis, who had been leaking us the photos here and there 'cause he didn't think I was going. And then when I showed up, he's like, "You're coming. I would've never sent you those pictures."
• 39:07
So I was like, "Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh, heh." And everybody was there, and, you know, we had a good old time, and that's where I realized that, you know, myself and many of my friends look like gnomes.
• 39:20
Uh, that, we saw that Dad Carlson. I saw my [bell rings] Mi hermano de, uh, de otros, uh, de madre, uh, Adam Blake from Bicycles. We saw so many people that we knew. [bell rings] We saw Yeti guy.
• 39:37
We saw- What's, what's a Yeti guy? We saw Scott Quiring. [laughs] Scott Quiring, oh my God, is he so excited about 29 plus. Our friend- Well, he had that 29 plus tandem last year- Well, he's-... that he just built, so...
• 39:53
telling you he calls 29ers pizza cutters now, and he is all about the [bottle cap rattling] He's all about 29 plus. And Jordan Wakely, they signed Jordan Wakely. Right on. You know?
• 40:10
And Jordan's excited, and I think that's a really good thing. I missed Jordan at the, uh, Fat Bike Berkey. He's out in Arizona. Yeah. What the hell? So
• 40:21
he's, uh, he's gonna be riding for Quiring, and Scott kinda, like, sees this as a moment for 29 plus and B plus that it's like when 29ers took off and the whole Bells Quiring team took off in Michigan.
• 40:40
So if you're a brewer in Michigan- Brewer, not a, not a Bernie Brewer 'cause, uh, baseball season's kinda getting going Oh, the New Holland Quiring plus team, that sounds pretty slick. Slick. Doesn't it?
• 40:52
Oh, that was actually the beer I was looking for was from New Holland. What? Really? Mm-hmm. I like Old Holland. Oh, it's right there. Oh, all right. Right there. Oh, oh, oh. [laughs] Beer snob. Damn it.
• 41:07
[bottles clanking] Oh, yeah. [laughs] Way to get all stealth on us and- Jeff Algera. Jeff. It's the Pugsley World Champion. Here's a cheers to Jeff Algera. Clink. [bottles clink] Busted Knuckle Machine.
• 41:23
So, oh, oh, oh, bamf. From the T to the Z. So that's, uh, that's NABS. You know what? Bike fashion week, man, everything from- Yeah... from Lady Gaga to your grandma's granny panties, just everything- [laughs]...
• 41:37
that you wanted to see. I- And some really cool stuff with regard to, uh, you know, like, Erickson, beautiful little bike that- He won, uh, best TIG, I believe. Yep. Which is, you know, a wonderful thing.
• 41:52
And Moon Man, they had four of their bikes there. I cannot wait to go to Michigan and ride the Unicorn's Moon Man, man. Moon Man, man. Moon Man, man. Moon Man, man. Oh, yeah.
• 42:04
Go, could you stop out in Fort Collins on your tour. You can visit my buddy, Ivan. Plus, you can go see Moon Man, and you can do the beers and bike show on their public radio station. Oh, yeah?
• 42:14
And when I win the lottery, I'm buying a Moon Man- Moon Man... bike. And, well, and I talked to S- Scott at his booth. I have maps now for the Manistee where I will definitely ride, bike pack,
• 42:34
bring a raft, raft to the big Lake Michigan, ride along the coast- Maps... on the boat again I'm telling you. And- Three hour tour...
• 42:45
Scott said if I need a shuttle somewhere, if I need a, if I need somebody to give me a neck rub or anything- Sounds like you got a man crush on the man, man. Whoo. [laughs] I got the look- Man...
• 42:57
I got the look- Man, man, man. Man. Man. So this means that I could [laughs] probably... [laughs] That was a close one. [laughs] Oh, my. I almost shit down my leg. [laughs] Spit take was almost averted there.
• 43:16
[laughs] Ah. Hello. Nobody's, nobody's on the line right now. Thank you. [laughs] I gotta pee because that was a little too funny. [laughs] It moved it to the front. [laughs] Oh, my God, I think I just had a stroke.
• 43:33
[laughs] Did you get all weird in the head, like whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa? The whole thing goes checkerboard. Yeah, right. Checkerboard. That's cool. Yeah. That's when you don't have any air to your head.
• 43:41
That's not exactly [laughs] a stroke. A stroke is no blood to the brain. You didn't have any air to the head. Wee. That was fun. [laughs] So NABS was good. NABS was a ton of fun.
• 43:55
And- What, what happened outside of the fashion show? Was, were like, you know, parties and, and going- Actually-... for rides and this and that? Yeah. There were, there were parties, and it was in downtown Louisville.
• 44:04
And- Louisville... it was really kinda cool, 'cause I was able to ride my bike like three blocks from my hotel to the convention center, get indoor parking and put my bike all in safe.
• 44:20
And then they had a very nice media room that we had Wi-Fi and everything I- The media gets treated better than the average citizen at a show. Yeah. So just so you folks know- Yeah...
• 44:30
you're gonna wanna go ahead and become media. [laughs] You can start by submitting stories to fatbike.com- [laughs]... @svan@fatbike.com. Of course, I would say yes.
• 44:40
How much did you like English assignments when, you know, you were younger? Why, why is, why start learning that crap now? We certainly haven't yet. [laughs] Exactly. Forget- I can't, I can't- Forget all about that...
• 44:51
I really, I gotta put my, I gotta put my thumb firmly on the fact that it's, it's good to take a, a photo that actually makes sense, though. Yeah. You, the, it... I mean, the words are... We, we got editors.
• 45:03
We can, we can change your words, but we can't change your photos, so. [laughs] Beer stop number two. [laughs] Top of the hill, boys. Ding, ding, ding. Wee. [bottles clanging] Honk. Honk.
• 45:20
[laughs] So you went to- So that's what a busted knuckle is... you went to a little, uh, shindig with about 800 fat bikers up there in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Wisconsin. Yeah.
• 45:31
Actually, there were 800 racers, and there were a lot of other people around that were fat bikers too, including myself, who deigned the, uh, uh, camera.
• 45:41
You know, I took the camera and took photos rather than actually race, but it was an awesome gathering.
• 45:49
This is much more than just a race where you come at, you know, 11:00 in the morning and you leave at 2:00 and you're done. You get there early, because the race starts...
• 45:58
Actually, this year it started at 9:00, last year at 8:00, because the trail conditions are better earlier.
• 46:04
And, you know, so you have to get there the day before, and a lot of people get there on Thursday instead of Friday, and you hang around and you, you ride some trail.
• 46:13
You actually ride out on the Birkie and get a feel for the conditions- Right, one of the only-... and this and that... one of the only two days of the year that you can ride your fat bike on the road Right.
• 46:20
Actually, they, now Thursday you can do it too. Oh, yeah. So it's actually three days a year. Three days. Yes. So you can go out and check that out. Um, we- So please, NABS, don't schedule your show before- Yeah...
• 46:31
the Birkie. Don't do that. Or the same weekend as the Birkie. So Derek and I, we had no intention of racing, so we went to, uh, check out some ice caves along the Lake Superior shoreline.
• 46:42
And a lot of the really cool ones that y'all hear about by Cornucopia and stuff are actually in, in a national park, and you can't ride your bike in there. Right. Can't get within a quarter mile on your bike.
• 46:51
The feds are crazy. Right. These, the caves, they're smaller, but the ones we went to, and they were pretty cool. Unfortunately, the light wasn't that great for photos, but it was still awesome.
• 47:00
We rode several miles on the lake on probably a foot of snow with a good hard crust on the top, and then every once in a while you kinda slide through.
• 47:09
But you could keep going and it was really cool with five-inch tires. Derek had four-inch tires. Not as happy a guy. Not as happy. [laughs] What tires, what tires were you running?
• 47:19
I was running Dillinger 5s at about probably six pounds. It was... You want it to be low and slow. Cool.
• 47:26
And then you would stay on top, 'cause when you crunched through, it was a lot harder, and I was just kinda like to zip on the top and find where the, where the wind blew the snow off of the little dune parts and those are kinda hard still.
• 47:37
And it's like, yeah, you're picking your line. Otherwise, you're working really hard if you're just like, just BM, beelining a straight line. And that's one of those things that doesn't happen every year. You know?
• 47:48
It, it's, it's a new s- part of this whole fat bike revolution that- Revolution... terrain that was no long, you know, never even thought about that you would take your bike to ice caves. Well, guess what?
• 48:04
Land managers, now bikes can go almost anywhere. And e- I would encourage people who are in charge of national parks, especially a freaking frozen one. Although, here, here's the thing about Cornucopia.
• 48:20
There are several thousand people who walk out there anyway, and it's like you probably- Mm... don't even wanna be there when it's like in, on a weekend.
• 48:26
You wanna go there off season or off, off weekend and earlier or later in the day when nobody's around, and there's just so many people there.
• 48:36
But you can't ride your bike within a quarter mile, and you're on ice, which actually melts. Yeah. So really, I don't dig it. Well, and you know, it's-
• 48:45
Here's our message to the land manager as well as the actual users that, you know, be good ambassadors Oh, yeah, I would not, I would not advocate banditing this or anything. That's not...
• 48:57
In fact, there's rangers at the spot, so it's like how do I know how far a quarter mile is? Err on the side of being further than you think. Right.
• 49:06
And they'll come up to you and say, "Nah," and then you just drop your bike and you walk in, and you can check it out.
• 49:12
But there are legal caves on both Madeline Island and on the other side at, over by Washburn where you can actually ride right up to them and check them out, so. Maybe not as... It's not Old Faithful geyser. No.
• 49:25
It's the littler one next to that guy- Yeah... which is still pretty good. Oh, yeah. But that guy only goes off, like, every s- 28 hours, where Old Faithful goes off every 90 minutes, so same idea.
• 49:37
Yeah, it's the Bryce Canyon versus Grand Canyon. Oh, Bryce is good though. Bryce is good. I actually like Bryce Canyon. Yeah. Plus, there's a lot of better riding around Bryce. That's southern Utah and [sighs]
• 49:49
Coral Pink Sand Dunes- Pink... State Park. I like pink. Killer, man. [laughs] And, and, you know, oh, sand dunes. Oh. [laughs] I've been thinking about sandy areas- [sighs]... 'cause it's spring.
• 50:02
