- 0:18Speaker 1: Welcome into JAGZAM.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I'm Kainani Stevens. Austin Lane and Mark Duffner are with
- 0:22Speaker 2: me as we hold things down on the home front
- 0:24Speaker 2: here in Jacksonville. The team is in London preparing for
- 0:26Speaker 2: their second game there before the bye week, of course.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And it's time to go over some of our big
- 0:31Speaker 2: things for you today.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Brought to you by.
- 0:33Speaker 2: GEHA, Government Employees Health Association. Big thing number one is
- 0:37Speaker 2: whatever it takes. That was one of those games against
- 0:40Speaker 2: the Eagles that it felt like they had to do
- 0:42Speaker 2: whatever it takes to find a win.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Dennis Gardick agrees.
- 0:48Speaker 3: The kind of phrase of no flinch comes to mind
- 0:51Speaker 3: that just whatever it takes to get the job done
- 0:53Speaker 3: in that moment. Uh, it's fun to be a part of, uh,
- 0:57Speaker 3: I think it leads to a team when offense compliment
- 1:04Speaker 3: and defense special teams tying it all together. Um, it's
- 1:08Speaker 3: fun to be a part of a team that's so
- 1:10Speaker 3: connected in terms of the phases.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Austin, find a way, whatever it takes. Don't flinch.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Sometimes you're just in a game and you have to
- 1:19Speaker 2: do whatever it takes to get a win, and the
- 1:21Speaker 2: Jaguars were able to do that.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Yeah, without a doubt, Kai.
- 1:24Speaker 5: You know, when you talk about whatever it takes and
- 1:26Speaker 5: finding a way to win, that comes down to coaching
- 1:28Speaker 5: and locker room leadership.
- 1:29Speaker 4: And especially in.
- 1:30Speaker 5: That game where things weren't going the Jaguars way, right,
- 1:33Speaker 5: there's a lot of penalties.
- 1:34Speaker 4: There's a lot of pre-stop penalties, too. Maybe we'll get
- 1:36Speaker 4: into a little bit later.
- 1:37Speaker 5: But you have to rely on the guys to be
- 1:39Speaker 5: leaders out there and say, hey, It's not going our
- 1:41Speaker 5: way like we want it to go.
- 1:43Speaker 4: But let's find a way to win, and leadership comes
- 1:45Speaker 4: into play there.
- 1:46Speaker 6: No doubt about it. I mean, when you look at
- 1:48Speaker 6: what they did, second half in particular, our defense settled
- 1:52Speaker 6: down right now, had a number of forced punch situations,
- 1:55Speaker 6: a fourth down stop. They had one earlier in the half.
- 1:58Speaker 6: And then for the special teams to step up, get
- 2:02Speaker 6: a kickoff return like they did, have the situational master
- 2:07Speaker 6: expertise to get down, give us time to kick the thing,
- 2:10Speaker 6: and then the execution of making that tremendous.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Let's go to our second big thing today. It's going
- 2:15Speaker 2: to be O-line questions. We found out after the game
- 2:19Speaker 2: that Anton Harrison, left tackle, who had to leave the game,
- 2:21Speaker 2: had an MRI on his knee. And as of this point,
- 2:23Speaker 2: reports are out.
- 2:24Speaker 1: That he's going to be getting surgery on that knee.
- 2:26Speaker 1: They do not know how long he will be out.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Obviously, Duff, this is not the news we wanted to
- 2:31Speaker 2: hear in terms of Anton. What are they losing when
- 2:34Speaker 2: they don't have him.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Out there left tackle?
- 2:35Speaker 6: Well, shoot, again, he's our best offensive lineman, I think,
- 2:38Speaker 6: right now. And so You're going to lose his play,
- 2:41Speaker 6: his production as far as that's concerned, his ability to
- 2:43Speaker 6: pass protect. And it gives an opportunity right now for
- 2:46Speaker 6: Walker Little, a guy that, thank God we've got him.
- 2:48Speaker 6: He's starting to experience both left and right tackle. I
- 2:52Speaker 6: think he's going to come in and play left tackle.
- 2:54Speaker 6: At least that's where I would play him if given
- 2:56Speaker 6: the chance to make my decision on that. But Cole
- 2:59Speaker 6: Van Lannen's getting back in. So we're going to need
- 3:02Speaker 6: Walker's best right now. And I think he's ready to fill.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Up that task.
- 3:06Speaker 5: And, you know, I think it speaks a lot of volumes, Coach,
- 3:08Speaker 5: because you talk about Walker Little didn't allow pressure. And granted,
- 3:11Speaker 5: you know, it was a small sample size, but it
- 3:14Speaker 5: says something. You have to come into a game that's
- 3:16Speaker 5: closer than you expected, don't allow pressure, and then you're
- 3:19Speaker 5: going against now a Houston Texans team where if I'm
- 3:21Speaker 5: Daniel Hunter, Will Anderson Jr., Coach, you've been in those
- 3:24Speaker 5: defensive line meetings, right? If you turn on that Jaguars
- 3:26Speaker 5: film right now with this offensive line, if I'm those
- 3:29Speaker 5: edge guys in Houston, I'm kind of licking my chops
- 3:30Speaker 5: and saying this could be our breakout day. So this
- 3:33Speaker 5: Jaguars offensive line will definitely be tested against a pretty
- 3:35Speaker 5: stout team. Houston Texans defensive line.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Let's go to our final big thing today, which is
- 3:39Speaker 2: going to be adjustments. And while the Jaguars were able
- 3:42Speaker 2: to get a win, there's plenty that is going to
- 3:44Speaker 2: be brought up in these meetings about things to work on. Penalties,
- 3:47Speaker 2: certainly one of them. And some of them were at
- 3:50Speaker 2: inopportune times in that game. We saw Trevor Lawrence getting
- 3:53Speaker 2: a little frustrated on the goal line sequence because of
- 3:55Speaker 2: so many penalties.
- 3:58Speaker 7: It's pretty frustrated at a lot of things, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 7: our offense, our.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Team, myself.
- 4:02Speaker 7: I mean, everything, just in that moment of, We kind
- 4:05Speaker 7: of lost our mind a little bit. Some of the
- 4:07Speaker 7: operational stuff we got to clean up. Too many penalties.
- 4:10Speaker 7: I thought it was supposed to be a home game
- 4:11Speaker 7: for us over here, but I guess you guys don't
- 4:14Speaker 7: like us too much. I like the Eagles a little
- 4:16Speaker 7: bit more. Just messing around. It was loud for sure.
- 4:21Speaker 7: It wasn't as much that. It was just getting behind
- 4:24Speaker 7: on the play clock. I got to do a better
- 4:25Speaker 7: job in the huddle of getting the guys out. Getting
- 4:27Speaker 7: the play call in, which I thought Coach did a
- 4:29Speaker 7: fine job. I got to get the play called and
- 4:31Speaker 7: get out of the huddle so we can operate and
- 4:34Speaker 7: not be behind the clock so much. So a lot
- 4:36Speaker 7: of stuff to clean up.
- 4:38Speaker 1: It was loud out there.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Austin, we saw Trevor get a little spicy, which, I mean,
- 4:43Speaker 2: I'm not mad at that part. I feel like you
- 4:44Speaker 2: can see him get a little competitive. It gets the
- 4:46Speaker 2: fire going. But is it on the play call here?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Is it the noise? What's going into some of these penalties?
- 4:52Speaker 5: I mean, I think this goes into everything, right? This
- 4:53Speaker 5: goes into the coach getting the play in at a
- 4:56Speaker 5: certain amount of time. This goes into Hainsey having the
- 4:58Speaker 5: wherewithal to snap the ball before the clock set. And obviously, Trevor...
- 5:02Speaker 5: Kind of shows his frustration here. And I think he
- 5:03Speaker 5: had his pick of the litter. Do you want to
- 5:05Speaker 5: yell at your center or do you want to yell
- 5:06Speaker 5: at your head coach on the sidelines? I think he
- 5:09Speaker 5: chose Hainsey. Maybe Hainsey got the brunt of it here.
- 5:12Speaker 5: But I think everyone's a little at fault, obviously. And
- 5:14Speaker 5: hopefully that's a focus going into this next game now
- 5:16Speaker 5: against Houston is getting that play in a little sooner
- 5:19Speaker 5: and obviously getting things set up a little quicker because
- 5:21Speaker 5: it won't be a hostile environment like you saw with
- 5:23Speaker 5: those Eagles fans, but it's going to be a hostile
- 5:25Speaker 5: defense that you're going against.
- 5:26Speaker 6: There's no question about it. And I think you did
- 5:28Speaker 6: a great job. Austin, of explaining that. Everybody participated to that.
- 5:32Speaker 6: But I loved the response that Trevor displayed there. You
- 5:36Speaker 6: could feel his passion right now. All those guys worked
- 5:39Speaker 6: too hard. They've established a high standard for execution around here,
- 5:42Speaker 6: and they didn't meet that. So everybody's going to go
- 5:45Speaker 6: back and look at how can we get to playing better?
- 5:47Speaker 6: How can we get, as you mentioned, Hainsey in terms
- 5:50Speaker 6: of communication, all that fixed up. We can't shoot ourselves
- 5:53Speaker 6: in the foot right now. Don't give away any snaps.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Take everything you possibly can. I love the energy for it.
- 5:58Speaker 6: It'll get fixed this week.
- 6:00Speaker 1: All right, those are our big things.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Stay with us here on JAGZAM, though, as we go
- 6:03Speaker 2: over some this or that and also look ahead to
- 6:05Speaker 2: the matchup against the Texans.
- 6:21Speaker 8: Yeah, obviously it's part of my job. I've got to
- 6:24Speaker 8: move on from the next, the last kick. It's like,
- 6:26Speaker 8: you know, like I said, missing a set piece. or
- 6:30Speaker 8: missing a wide open goal. You see a lot of
- 6:31Speaker 8: strikers do that and they'll come back and put the
- 6:33Speaker 8: game away. So I get paid to put the ball
- 6:35Speaker 8: through the yellow uprights and I have to make those
- 6:38Speaker 8: opportunities count, whether it's the one, the PAT, I'm glad
- 6:41Speaker 8: it was a field goal after because one counts for
- 6:43Speaker 8: three points, one counts for one point. So I was,
- 6:45Speaker 8: you know, obviously more excited to hit that one, but yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 8: I've got to have a short-term memory and I've got
- 6:50Speaker 8: to be at my best when the best is required.
- 6:51Speaker 8: I think Coach Cohen preaches that. And obviously you think
- 6:54Speaker 8: about the best players in the world, whether it's football, soccer, tennis,
- 6:57Speaker 8: They're the best when their best is required.
- 6:59Speaker 4: So, yeah, I had to move on quickly.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Time to give some more kudos to.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Cam Little for a huge kick, little big kick, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 2: we love that. But there was a lot of pressure
- 7:14Speaker 2: on everybody involved in that. So we're going to do
- 7:15Speaker 2: a little this or that where I give you guys
- 7:17Speaker 2: some options. Under pressure, you're setting up with one second
- 7:20Speaker 2: left a game-winning field goal. You have a backup long snapper,
- 7:22Speaker 2: John Hamilton, who does not do that on the regular.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Logan Cook needs to go up and get the ball
- 7:26Speaker 2: and somehow get it put down with the laces out
- 7:28Speaker 2: ready for Cam Little.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And Cam Little, who just missed a point after the.
- 7:32Speaker 2: an extra point, has to come in and try to
- 7:33Speaker 2: make this kick, which as if there was a knock
- 7:36Speaker 2: was maybe, you know, in the more pressure situations he
- 7:39Speaker 2: has missed. Who was under the most pressure in that situation, Austin?
- 7:42Speaker 5: So to me, I'm going to go with the real
- 7:44Speaker 5: unicorn because we saw this last year with Devon Hamilton
- 7:46Speaker 5: with all due respect to Travis Hunter, but this guy's
- 7:48Speaker 5: long snapping and playing defensive tackle.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I'm going Devon Hamilton because that's not his job, right?
- 7:53Speaker 4: Like it's Cam Little's job to make kicks.
- 7:56Speaker 5: It is Logan Cook's job to get the ball, put
- 7:58Speaker 5: it down for the kicker to kick the ball. It
- 8:00Speaker 5: is not Devon Hamilton's job to long snap in one
- 8:03Speaker 5: of the biggest moments of that game away from home
- 8:06Speaker 5: in England and get a dub. That wasn't his job,
- 8:09Speaker 5: but he ended the pressure moment gracefully and absolutely crushed it,
- 8:13Speaker 5: and the rest is history.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:15Speaker 6: Well, let me say this. I agree with what you said,
- 8:18Speaker 6: and all three of them had major pressure. And actually,
- 8:21Speaker 6: the best snap of the day, which was a bullet,
- 8:24Speaker 6: was a snap before They iced him, and he fired
- 8:28Speaker 6: a bullet back there, and you're thinking, great, I'm going
- 8:30Speaker 6: to go with Little. And the reason I'm going with
- 8:33Speaker 6: him is, as Kyle, you just mentioned, he missed one earlier.
- 8:36Speaker 6: He'd just seen a couple of errant snaps. He'd seen
- 8:41Speaker 6: Cook go up like Wilt Chamberlain to catch a couple
- 8:44Speaker 6: of them. And to get that thing down and to
- 8:46Speaker 6: make that thing, we had to have it in that situation.
- 8:48Speaker 6: And I know that he's paid to do that, but
- 8:50Speaker 6: by God, he did it, and he did it in
- 8:52Speaker 6: a big way. And one that wasn't easy with all those,
- 8:54Speaker 6: so I'm going with him.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I'm going to split the middle and go with Logan
- 8:57Speaker 2: because he needs some credit. He's the only one who
- 8:59Speaker 2: probably isn't getting the credit because that middle piece where you're...
- 9:03Speaker 2: And no knocking Devon at all because I think also
- 9:06Speaker 2: when you are doing that role and you don't normally
- 9:09Speaker 2: do it, you probably do it the same every single time,
- 9:10Speaker 2: which is... He's snapping it at the height for punting, essentially.
- 9:14Speaker 2: It kind of would hit Logan in the chest if
- 9:15Speaker 2: it was a punt. And so he doesn't want to
- 9:17Speaker 2: mess with that. If it hits the ground or it
- 9:20Speaker 2: hits Logan, then it's going to be a live ball.
- 9:22Speaker 2: So rather higher than hitting the ground and tumbling about.
- 9:25Speaker 2: So I'll give Logan credit, though, for, as you mentioned,
- 9:28Speaker 2: going up real high to get it and then twisting
- 9:30Speaker 2: his foot out of the way and all this. And listen,
- 9:33Speaker 2: it's a specialist position. That is in the title. But
- 9:35Speaker 2: we don't give them enough credit sometimes.
- 9:37Speaker 4: No, absolutely.
- 9:38Speaker 5: And obviously, if it doesn't happen and the timing's off
- 9:40Speaker 5: a little bit and Logan can't get it down in time,
- 9:42Speaker 5: they're going to all blame Cam and no one's going
- 9:43Speaker 5: to talk about Logan maybe.
- 9:45Speaker 4: So it is a thankless job.
- 9:47Speaker 5: So I got a little respect where we say Devon
- 9:50Speaker 5: Hamilton on defense, a thankless job playing nose tackle, stopping
- 9:52Speaker 5: the run. Logan Cook on special teams, a thankless job
- 9:55Speaker 5: in terms of catching the ball and putting it down.
- 9:57Speaker 6: I've heard other special teams coordinators around the league say
- 9:59Speaker 6: Logan Cook. Cook's the best holder in the league, which
- 10:02Speaker 6: is a talent in its own. I mean, so I've
- 10:04Speaker 6: heard that. So, again, kudos to him, too, and what
- 10:06Speaker 6: he did.
- 10:06Speaker 2: After all that, I think we can say Logan is
- 10:08Speaker 2: the best holder.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh, yes.
- 10:11Speaker 2: We talked about Anton Harrison will be out for– an
- 10:14Speaker 2: amount of time. We don't know how long just yet,
- 10:16Speaker 2: but that means that there's going to be some O-line changes.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And we saw Walker Little come in. He was plugged
- 10:21Speaker 1: right into left tackle.
- 10:23Speaker 2: And, Coach, please elaborate for us because is it a plug-and-play,
- 10:27Speaker 2: just run with him at left tackle? Do you move
- 10:29Speaker 2: some other pieces around? There are players on this O-line
- 10:32Speaker 2: that have played multiple positions. So I know traditionally you
- 10:35Speaker 2: don't like to upset the whole apple cart, right? You
- 10:37Speaker 2: just kind of leave him at left tackle, Walker.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Little at left tackle?
- 10:39Speaker 6: That's what I think. I think it's plug-and-play. I think he–
- 10:42Speaker 6: He goes there right now. He's got versatility, and thank
- 10:45Speaker 6: God we've got him because of the fact that he
- 10:47Speaker 6: does have the versatility, starting experience at both sides. He
- 10:51Speaker 6: went in in the second, as you mentioned, came in
- 10:53Speaker 6: when Anton got hurt and protected marvelously as far as
- 10:57Speaker 6: that's concerned. So I think it's let him get all
- 10:59Speaker 6: the reps again this week with those guys, stay there,
- 11:01Speaker 6: keep goal where he is. Is he still coming back?
- 11:04Speaker 6: Probably still not in 100% form as far as his
- 11:08Speaker 6: production and his play is concerned. That's what I would do.
- 11:10Speaker 6: I would get Walker in there, we gotta get backup
- 11:13Speaker 6: ready too, whoever that's gonna wind up being, whether it's Felele,
- 11:16Speaker 6: maybe it's somebody coming off the practice squad, but all
- 11:18Speaker 6: that's gotta go into preparation this week.
- 11:20Speaker 5: Yeah, let's keep in mind with Colt Van Lannen as well.
- 11:22Speaker 5: This is a guy who missed all training camp, who
- 11:25Speaker 5: was kind of going through the first couple weeks getting
- 11:27Speaker 5: back in game shape and everything. And yes, he did
- 11:30Speaker 5: make his money. He made his contract at left tackle.
- 11:33Speaker 5: That's where he kind of had his coming out party,
- 11:34Speaker 5: if you will, and he got a new deal. But
- 11:37Speaker 5: at the same time, he didn't play his best game
- 11:39Speaker 5: last week against the Eagles. And that's not to say
- 11:43Speaker 5: that he's not capable. I just think, like Coach said,
- 11:45Speaker 5: he's coming off that injury. He's still getting in game
- 11:47Speaker 5: shape and everything. So why move him from a spot
- 11:49Speaker 5: where you just put him at and say, okay, go
- 11:51Speaker 5: play left tackle. More importantly, go protect your quarterback's blind side.
- 11:55Speaker 5: I'm sure Trevor would appreciate, hey, you know what? Let's
- 11:58Speaker 5: walk a little over there. He did a pretty good
- 11:59Speaker 5: job against the Eagles. We'll have Cole Atlanta on the right.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Let's see what happens. I'll tell you what.
- 12:03Speaker 6: I agree with everything. This offensive staff and the offensive
- 12:07Speaker 6: line coaches in particular have done the best job of
- 12:09Speaker 6: any I've been around watching them mix and match players
- 12:12Speaker 6: and fitting guys in and cross-training them so that you
- 12:15Speaker 6: don't have these issues where you're worried about it. So
- 12:18Speaker 6: I've got confidence in the staff. I've got confidence in Walker.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Let's go get them.
- 12:22Speaker 2: All right, our final this or that is going to
- 12:23Speaker 2: be a little bit more broad. Obviously, we are coming
- 12:26Speaker 2: up on the bye week after this matchup with the Texans.
- 12:27Speaker 2: We'll have a little bit of a break. And while
- 12:29Speaker 2: I feel this team is really well-rounded, especially when you
- 12:32Speaker 2: look around the NFL, what's your biggest concern going forward?
- 12:35Speaker 2: Is it O-line that we've talked about? Is it D-line
- 12:37Speaker 2: pass rush? Is there something else that's on your mind
- 12:39Speaker 2: that you're like, hey, this might become an issue later
- 12:41Speaker 2: down the road?
- 12:42Speaker 1: Austin, what are you concerned?
- 12:44Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, I mean, I think you kind of
- 12:45Speaker 5: make a case for both sides. But you know me,
- 12:47Speaker 5: I'm on the defensive side of the ball, right? And
- 12:49Speaker 5: that's where I played. And anytime you're giving up 14
- 12:51Speaker 5: points a game. that's enough to win, right? So when
- 12:55Speaker 5: you look at Liam Cohen, the way this team is constructed,
- 12:58Speaker 5: this is an offensive-minded team, and it seems like the
- 13:01Speaker 5: defense is secondary. Well, right now, I haven't watched one
- 13:04Speaker 5: Jaguars game and thought the defense has to prevent them
- 13:07Speaker 5: from scoring more points. I mean, when you're averaging 14
- 13:09Speaker 5: points given up, that's enough to win every single football game.
- 13:12Speaker 5: So to me, it stems a little more from the offense.
- 13:14Speaker 5: It's easier to say, let's get another pass rusher, right?
- 13:17Speaker 5: Let's get an edge guy. But in totality, I think
- 13:20Speaker 5: I want to see more points on the board, and
- 13:22Speaker 5: points start in the trenches. So I'm a little more
- 13:25Speaker 5: concerned with the offensive line just simply because you have injuries,
- 13:28Speaker 5: you have guys coming in and out and everything, so
- 13:30Speaker 5: I'm not quite sure what that's going to look like yet.
- 13:32Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't have a lot of concerns, to be honest,
- 13:35Speaker 6: and I'm with you with everything you just said. I'm
- 13:38Speaker 6: confident our offensive scoring is going to be where we
- 13:40Speaker 6: want it to be. They've done it so well. The
- 13:42Speaker 6: last half of last season started out well this year
- 13:45Speaker 6: with two, so I think that that's coming. I think
- 13:49Speaker 6: as we continue to get balanced in our run game
- 13:51Speaker 6: and our pass game, our play-action pass game will open
- 13:53Speaker 6: up with the run game continuing to be good. Basial, Tootin, C-Rod,
- 13:56Speaker 6: all those guys. I still think, and I still like
- 14:01Speaker 6: to see a little more pressure on affecting the opponent's quarterback.
- 14:04Speaker 6: I think that's an issue that, I mean, we're getting pressures,
- 14:08Speaker 6: we're getting quarterback hits, but I like to see the sacks.
- 14:11Speaker 6: I like to see the sack fumbles. You know, they
- 14:14Speaker 6: affected us a little bit this pass game with that,
- 14:16Speaker 6: and when you saw what Carter could do. So, again,
- 14:19Speaker 6: that's my concern a little bit. Let's see if we
- 14:20Speaker 6: can get a little bit more done there.
- 14:22Speaker 5: I mean, Coach, I think you know better than anybody
- 14:23Speaker 5: at the position. I mean, how beneficial is it when
- 14:26Speaker 5: you can only rush four guys and get home? Because
- 14:28Speaker 5: now we're seeing a lot of blitzing, right? We're seeing
- 14:29Speaker 5: linebackers come through the A and the B gaps and
- 14:32Speaker 5: trying to get home. I mean, you know firsthand, like,
- 14:35Speaker 5: how much does it help when you can only get
- 14:37Speaker 5: home with four and you can have your linebackers back
- 14:39Speaker 5: in coverage a little more?
- 14:40Speaker 6: It's the best if you can. And that's rushing coverage
- 14:42Speaker 6: working together. In other words, we've got to continue to
- 14:44Speaker 6: be aggressive and sticky in coverage, can test all throws.
- 14:48Speaker 6: So it's everybody working together. It's not just those four
- 14:50Speaker 6: guys up front and everybody else is on their own.
- 14:53Speaker 6: So it's an 11-man proposition no matter what. But where
- 14:57Speaker 6: we can get Russian covers working together and do it
- 15:00Speaker 6: with four men, well, it's the best in the world.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Always room for improvement, but it's nice to be doing
- 15:04Speaker 1: it four and one.
- 15:05Speaker 4: Amen.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And hopefully five and one. Stay with us. We are
- 15:09Speaker 2: going to look at some of the other things going
- 15:11Speaker 2: on around the division and we'll preview the matchup against
- 15:14Speaker 2: the Texans. Welcome back into Jags AM. We're going to
- 15:27Speaker 2: discuss what's going on around the NFL. We like to
- 15:29Speaker 2: keep our tabs on things. And we're going to start
- 15:30Speaker 2: and finish this week with the AFC South because we're
- 15:33Speaker 2: facing off against the Texans. This is the Jaguars' first
- 15:35Speaker 2: matchup against a division opponent so far this season. And yes,
- 15:40Speaker 2: the Texans finally got their first win of the season
- 15:42Speaker 2: this week because they took on the Titans and the
- 15:44Speaker 2: Titans are 0-5. So the Texans are 1-4. But you
- 15:48Speaker 2: don't look at records when it's a divisional matchup. Coach,
- 15:51Speaker 2: the Texans are always a tough matchup for this current
- 15:56Speaker 2: Jaguars team, and I know at even one of four.
- 15:58Speaker 1: It will be.
- 15:59Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, when you look back at the previous
- 16:01Speaker 6: games that we've had with them, I think the biggest
- 16:03Speaker 6: margin of victory is seven points. And last year, as
- 16:06Speaker 6: you know, they came back mightily to wind up beating
- 16:09Speaker 6: us over in London. So I mean, this is a major,
- 16:12Speaker 6: major task, upcoming challenge for us coming up right now.
- 16:15Speaker 6: You've got a defense right now that Coach Ryan's got
- 16:17Speaker 6: back into calling the defense. They got settled down a
- 16:20Speaker 6: little bit prior to that. They were, shoot, they were
- 16:22Speaker 6: 31st in the league in explosive plays. They had issues
- 16:25Speaker 6: with deep passes, with communication, with breakdowns, with busts. I
- 16:30Speaker 6: think they've got that now back under control. And you've
- 16:33Speaker 6: got a quarterback coming in right now that's playing as
- 16:35Speaker 6: good as anybody in the league. I think he's third
- 16:37Speaker 6: in total yards and playing very confidently right now. Nico
- 16:42Speaker 6: Collins coming back right now. I think they've averaged over
- 16:45Speaker 6: 30 points a game. Both games he's come back in.
- 16:47Speaker 6: So this team right now is starting to get their
- 16:50Speaker 6: stride back a little bit. They're very determined right now
- 16:53Speaker 6: and very desperate in the game that's coming up against
- 16:56Speaker 6: the Jaguars.
- 16:57Speaker 5: Yeah, and with all the respected Tennessee Titans, this feels
- 16:59Speaker 5: like the rival.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Game here, right?
- 17:01Speaker 2: I think at this stage, after the last couple of years,
- 17:04Speaker 2: and I know everyone will always dislike the Titans.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Of course.
- 17:06Speaker 1: But it feels like the main rival at this point
- 17:08Speaker 1: is the Texans.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Without a doubt.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Anytime you have a rival in a game, you know,
- 17:11Speaker 5: it can always be closer than expected, right? It's going
- 17:13Speaker 5: to be hard fought, and that's what Houston's going to
- 17:15Speaker 5: bring to the table, I feel like, this Sunday.
- 17:17Speaker 4: As Coach mentioned, C.J. Stroud is playing.
- 17:19Speaker 5: At a different level right now, which we didn't really
- 17:21Speaker 5: see last year a lot. And their defense will still travel.
- 17:26Speaker 5: D'Amico Ryan's now calling the plays. He got a nice
- 17:28Speaker 5: soft launch against the Tennessee Titans offense that wasn't firing
- 17:32Speaker 5: all cylinders or anything. But you've got to take into
- 17:34Speaker 5: account they have a good secondary. They have great pass rushers.
- 17:38Speaker 5: And obviously with Nico Collins, you've got to shut him
- 17:41Speaker 5: down because those two games last year, Nico Collins– Kind
- 17:44Speaker 5: of had a field day in Jacksonville and thankfully a
- 17:46Speaker 5: Tyson Campbell punch out actually won the Jaguars that game
- 17:49Speaker 5: because that was used in Texans game too. So you're
- 17:52Speaker 5: looking at a Texans team that they have a lot
- 17:54Speaker 5: to play for.
- 17:55Speaker 4: They're your rival. You got to bring it.
- 17:58Speaker 1: And they're adding in another addition.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I don't know if he'll play in this matchup, but
- 18:01Speaker 2: the Texans announcing a trade for Marvin Harrison Jr. from
- 18:03Speaker 2: the Cardinals because obviously they've had some injuries with their
- 18:06Speaker 2: wide receivers. But another target, one C.J. Stroud is familiar
- 18:09Speaker 2: with because of their time in college together. We haven't
- 18:13Speaker 2: seen a ton on Marvin Harrison Jr. at the NFL level,
- 18:15Speaker 2: maybe underperforming some, but is this an opportunity for him
- 18:18Speaker 2: to kind.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Of revive himself?
- 18:20Speaker 4: I mean, I think it is.
- 18:20Speaker 5: I wouldn't be surprised if we see him in some
- 18:22Speaker 5: sort of capacity as he starts to learn the offense
- 18:25Speaker 5: a little bit, but he was drafted in the first
- 18:27Speaker 5: round for a reason. Now, granted, it didn't work out
- 18:28Speaker 5: in Arizona, but sometimes all you need is a change
- 18:31Speaker 5: of scenery to get your confidence back up, and especially
- 18:33Speaker 5: a quarterback throwing you the football that you're accustomed to
- 18:36Speaker 5: from college. So I would be really worried about Marvin
- 18:38Speaker 5: Harrison Jr. Make sure I have all eyes on him
- 18:40Speaker 5: as well as Nico Collins.
- 18:41Speaker 6: Yeah, they've got multiple weapons right now. This Jalen Noel,
- 18:45Speaker 6: I guess it's pronounced, a rookie that they've got. Geez,
- 18:48Speaker 6: he had a career game or a great game against
- 18:51Speaker 6: Dallas a couple weeks ago. He's a great returner, so
- 18:53Speaker 6: he's a deep threat. I mean, when you add up Collins,
- 18:57Speaker 6: you mentioned Marvin Harrison coming aboard and their connection. Wow,
- 19:01Speaker 6: and Dalton Schultz as a tight end being a very
- 19:04Speaker 6: steady guy. Now, they struggled in the run game a
- 19:06Speaker 6: little bit, but this Woody Marks gave him some juice
- 19:08Speaker 6: last week, too, so he's coming on. this is going
- 19:11Speaker 6: to be a challenge for our defense for sure.
- 19:14Speaker 5: And you want to talk about complementary football, listen, I
- 19:16Speaker 5: don't want to go against Nico Collins one-on-one.
- 19:17Speaker 4: So this is on the Jaguars' defensive line now to
- 19:19Speaker 4: get home.
- 19:20Speaker 5: It's kind of a makeshift offensive line of the Texans
- 19:23Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Good call.
- 19:24Speaker 5: Where you have to rely on your pass rush, hopefully
- 19:25Speaker 5: just rushing four, helping out in zone and man coverage
- 19:28Speaker 5: and everything. But you're rushing four, you get home, and
- 19:30Speaker 5: make C.J. Stroud's life uncomfortable.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Good call.
- 19:33Speaker 2: We talked about what the O-line dealt with this week
- 19:36Speaker 2: against the Eagles on some other shows and on postgame
- 19:39Speaker 2: because Jalen Carter was just a wrecking ball. But the
- 19:42Speaker 2: defensive front for the Texans is no slouch either. Coach,
- 19:46Speaker 2: this is going to be a tough matchup for this
- 19:48Speaker 2: banged up O-line for the Jaguars.
- 19:49Speaker 1: To be dealing with.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Oh my gosh. I mean, again, what Hunter brings, what
- 19:54Speaker 6: Anderson brings. Anderson right now is leading the league in sacks.
- 19:57Speaker 6: I think he's got about, geez, I'm going to say
- 19:59Speaker 6: 12 tackles for loss. But I mean, he's killing it
- 20:02Speaker 6: right now. I think he's second in pressures. And then
- 20:05Speaker 6: Hunter on the other side, I mean, pick your poison.
- 20:07Speaker 6: I mean, These guys are really prolific. We've got to
- 20:10Speaker 6: play great first down offense right now, move the chains
- 20:13Speaker 6: where they haven't earned the right to rush. In other words,
- 20:17Speaker 6: so they don't know what it's going to be. We've
- 20:19Speaker 6: got to stay ahead of the sticks as far as
- 20:21Speaker 6: that's concerned. Play call, execution is going to be critical
- 20:24Speaker 6: to keep them at bay, if you will.
- 20:27Speaker 5: And this is the problem when you're trying to game
- 20:28Speaker 5: plan for the Houston Texans, right? Because usually in the league,
- 20:30Speaker 5: there's one good pass rusher that you have to have
- 20:32Speaker 5: your eyes on, right? So you can kind of double
- 20:34Speaker 5: team him. You can chip him. You can't do that
- 20:36Speaker 5: with Will Anderson Jr. and Daniel Hunter because they can
- 20:38Speaker 5: both beat you. They're both very talented. So I expect
- 20:41Speaker 5: to see a lot of, you know, 12 personnel, maybe
- 20:43Speaker 5: some 13 personnel. Have your tight ends help out a
- 20:46Speaker 5: little bit. Don't give them a free release. Even your
- 20:49Speaker 5: running backs can step up a little bit. But you
- 20:51Speaker 5: have to make sure that at all times they're not
- 20:53Speaker 5: getting a free release. So whether it's a tight end,
- 20:55Speaker 5: whether it's a shoulder from a Quinn Allen, do something
- 20:58Speaker 5: to throw them off the track. Because if they get
- 20:59Speaker 5: going with that speed and everything, it could be a
- 21:01Speaker 5: long day for Trevor Lawrence.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Not going to be good.
- 21:03Speaker 2: We'll look a little elsewhere in the division. I'm not
- 21:06Speaker 2: going to go fully into the Titans right now. We'll
- 21:07Speaker 2: push that down the road. But the Colts lost to
- 21:10Speaker 2: the Steelers this week. Coach, I know you keep up
- 21:12Speaker 2: with the league yourself. Obviously, the Texans, we feel, are
- 21:15Speaker 2: always a threat no matter what their record is. The
- 21:17Speaker 2: Colts are kind of a mystery to me because some
- 21:19Speaker 2: weeks they look okay, some weeks not so much.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Do you really have a read on where they're at
- 21:23Speaker 1: right now?
- 21:24Speaker 4: No, I don't.
- 21:26Speaker 6: No, I wish I did, actually, but I'm with you there.
- 21:28Speaker 6: I don't know who's showing up. A lot of it's
- 21:31Speaker 6: the quarterback. Again, when he's playing well, like every team,
- 21:34Speaker 6: their team tends to go right now, but they've struggled.
- 21:37Speaker 6: They start off the season struggling on defense. I thought
- 21:40Speaker 6: they kind of got that back under control, and yet
- 21:42Speaker 6: they had it. Tough ball game against Pittsburgh here recently,
- 21:45Speaker 6: as you mentioned last week. So the guy that they
- 21:48Speaker 6: kind of got to get going is who we're looking
- 21:50Speaker 6: at right now, Taylor. I mean, he really hasn't gotten
- 21:54Speaker 6: going as far as their offense is concerned. So I
- 21:56Speaker 6: don't know yet that they've been able to really find
- 21:58Speaker 6: their identity this season, really who they are offensively or defensively.
- 22:03Speaker 6: And I kind of hope that's where they stay, that
- 22:04Speaker 6: they're a little bit in a quandary as who we are.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Yeah, this is a team that's really missing Alec Pierce, right?
- 22:11Speaker 5: You invested a lot into him to make him a
- 22:13Speaker 5: wide receiver one. He's been out with his heel. I'm
- 22:15Speaker 5: not sure when he's going to be back. Obviously, Jonathan,
- 22:17Speaker 5: the offense goes through Jonathan Taylor as of now. And
- 22:20Speaker 5: you still have to keep him in check because he
- 22:22Speaker 5: can beat you at any time. He's got breakaway speed.
- 22:25Speaker 5: And as far as defense is concerned, yeah, you get
- 22:27Speaker 5: Sauce Gardner. He's been a little porous. But to me,
- 22:30Speaker 5: and this is where if you're a Jaguars fan, you're
- 22:31Speaker 5: a little worried about it, DeForest Buckner. is one of
- 22:34Speaker 5: the best three techniques in the league. And you just
- 22:36Speaker 5: saw a three technique in Jalen Carter, maybe a little
- 22:39Speaker 5: different size than DeForest Buckner, but still the same physicality
- 22:42Speaker 5: and playability where if he gets going, that entire defense
- 22:45Speaker 5: can rally behind him. So when the time does come
- 22:48Speaker 5: to play the Indianapolis Colts, you've got to take into
- 22:50Speaker 5: account stopping DeForest Buckner.
- 22:52Speaker 1: The ability to wreck a game, absolutely.
- 22:54Speaker 4: He is a game wrecker, that's for sure. He's a
- 22:56Speaker 4: big dude.
- 22:56Speaker 6: No doubt.
- 22:57Speaker 2: All right, stay with us here. We're going to take
- 22:58Speaker 2: one more break, and then we'll tell you what's coming
- 23:00Speaker 2: up the rest of the week.
- 23:13Speaker 9: Man it was a big time moment and big time
- 23:16Speaker 9: play we needed to play right there so at first
- 23:20Speaker 9: I'm looking and I was looking in the air I
- 23:22Speaker 9: was like where is the football I like I know
- 23:24Speaker 9: I'm supposed to be getting it and then as soon
- 23:27Speaker 9: as I saw it I was like okay there we
- 23:28Speaker 9: go and then just being able to make that play
- 23:32Speaker 9: that's what it's all about you know that's what the
- 23:34Speaker 9: off season's for that's what all the training that's what
- 23:36Speaker 9: the training camps OTAs that's what it's all about so
- 23:41Speaker 9: just making that play and Being a guy that your
- 23:43Speaker 9: team leans on in a big-time moment, that was special
- 23:45Speaker 9: for me.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Caught up in the last eight seconds of the game,
- 23:49Speaker 2: hard to forget, but this catch from Parker Washington, I
- 23:52Speaker 2: know he does it every day at practice and it's
- 23:54Speaker 2: almost old hat, but it's so impressive and just really
- 23:58Speaker 2: hammers home how important he is to this offense.
- 24:01Speaker 4: I mean, he's everything.
- 24:03Speaker 5: And I hope James Glass was not listening because I'm
- 24:04Speaker 5: not trying to drive the price of Parker Washington even
- 24:06Speaker 5: up even more.
- 24:07Speaker 4: But you know who he really reminds me of? And
- 24:09Speaker 4: that play is a classic example.
- 24:11Speaker 5: And even the play in the flat, the drag route
- 24:13Speaker 5: where he gets that touchdown as well, he reminds me
- 24:15Speaker 5: of Jackson Smith and Jigbaugh.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 24:18Speaker 5: And the story is crazy. They both started the slot
- 24:20Speaker 5: their first year, right? And they're just slot receivers. And
- 24:23Speaker 5: they gradually get more and more confidence. They gradually get
- 24:25Speaker 5: more and more involved in the route tree. And now
- 24:28Speaker 5: you have no problem with Parker Washington doing these deep
- 24:30Speaker 5: routes just like JSN.
- 24:31Speaker 4: So it's wild.
- 24:32Speaker 5: And if you read the draft write-ups as well with
- 24:34Speaker 5: Lance Zerline, who I've talked to about it before.
- 24:36Speaker 4: It's the same thing.
- 24:38Speaker 5: Out of college, they're questioning could they play an X
- 24:41Speaker 5: or an outside receiver because.
- 24:44Speaker 4: They're agile, but do they have.
- 24:46Speaker 5: The overall game-to-day breaking speed to get deep and deep coverage?
- 24:51Speaker 4: Exhibit A right there for Parker Washington. I'll tell you what.
- 24:53Speaker 6: He reminds me a lot of Jamar Chase. They're both
- 24:57Speaker 6: guys that look like running backs from the waist down.
- 25:01Speaker 6: They make people miss. They're go-to guys. They make plays
- 25:04Speaker 6: when we need it the most. I mean, I have come,
- 25:07Speaker 6: like you said, Kai, you kind of think, well, he
- 25:09Speaker 6: does it all the time. And yeah, he does do
- 25:11Speaker 6: it all the time. Consistency is another description for this guy.
- 25:14Speaker 6: Consistently great. So, I mean, wow. I never, I mean,
- 25:17Speaker 6: that catch was off the chart gorgeous. But again, I've
- 25:21Speaker 6: seen it before, too. He does it all the time,
- 25:24Speaker 6: like the sun coming up.
- 25:25Speaker 5: And it's also something to keep in mind as well, right?
- 25:27Speaker 5: Because we're seeing Josh Cameron get more and more reps
- 25:29Speaker 5: right now. And Josh Cameron's kind of being that possession,
- 25:32Speaker 5: that bully receiver, if you will. Not sure if he's
- 25:34Speaker 5: really a deep threat. Well, if Brian Thomas Jr. is
- 25:36Speaker 5: going to be off the field, you might have a
- 25:38Speaker 5: deep threat there in Parker Washington that you might want
- 25:40Speaker 5: to sprinkle on a little more and do some go-routes
- 25:42Speaker 5: with him.
- 25:42Speaker 1: He certainly is.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Capable, and he's worked his way up. A six-round pick,
- 25:45Speaker 2: and look what he's become. This is our daily pitch
- 25:48Speaker 2: to get Parker Washington locked up long-term.
- 25:50Speaker 7: Do it.
- 25:50Speaker 2: But we hope you enjoyed this version of Jags AM.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Jags AM will be back from London on Thursday as
- 25:55Speaker 2: they get you fully ready for that Texans matchup. We'll
- 25:57Speaker 2: be here for you on game time on Sunday, right
- 26:01Speaker 2: early in the morning. So check out pregame coverage here
- 26:03Speaker 2: as well on Jaguars.com. Until then, enjoy your week.
