- 0:27Our first article, Wonderful Feeling of Community Knuckles Museum dinner
- 0:34coincides with one hundred Years of Black History Month by
- 0:38Aaron Snyder of The Daily Independent. When Carter G. Woodson,
- 0:43who spent his formative years in nearby Huntington, founded Negro
- 0:48History Week in nineteen twenty six, perhaps he envisioned celebrations
- 0:53like Saturday Night in Ashland a century later. This is
- 0:58like a great, big family reunion, Bernice Henry said during
- 1:02the C. B. Nicholls Community Center and Black History Museum
- 1:06fundraising dinner that drew three hundred plus people to the
- 1:11Highlands Museum and Discovery Center. Henry and her nephew Darryl Smith,
- 1:17co founders of Ashland's museum, received keys to the city
- 1:22from Mayor Chuck Charles as people enjoyed dinner and dancing
- 1:27while honoring one hundred years of Black History Month. Charles
- 1:32also made a key presentation to Mary Bell, the widow
- 1:36of the late James W. Bell Senior. He was Ashland
- 1:41Police Department's first black officer. She came in from Lexington
- 1:46to attend. I hope this does your heart well, Charles
- 1:50told Bell. She was so thrilled, Smith said. James Bell
- 1:55joined the U. S. Marine Corps in July nineteen seventy
- 2:00and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He received
- 2:04a National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three Stars,
- 2:09a Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.
- 2:17Bell joined APD in nineteen eighty at the age of thirty.
- 2:22He was assigned to the Patrol Division and was later
- 2:24a detective in criminal investigations. He also served in the
- 2:30local Drug Task Force. He retired in nineteen ninety one
- 2:35and passed away in March nineteen ninety three. James and
- 2:40Mary Bell had five children. They have eleven grandchildren, two
- 2:45great grandchildren and two more on the way. A Chattautiqua
- 2:50performance featured Kristin Martin s, Harriet Tubman, Leah Branch as
- 2:56Madame C. J. Walker and Norman branch As. Medgar Evans,
- 3:02a jazz band, and DJ Tanner Cantley provided music. Texas
- 3:08Roadhouse catered the dinner. Reverend Stanley McDonald led prayer prior
- 3:13to eating. Although the four hour event began at six pm,
- 3:18Smith's said attendees began filtering into the sixth floor of
- 3:22the Highlands early and often they just kept coming. Smith
- 3:27said it was a wonderful feeling of community, with white
- 3:30and black all getting together like this. Various exhibits from
- 3:36the Black History Museum were on display throughout the floor,
- 3:40including posters and art honoring the late Jerry Johnson. Volunteers
- 3:46from First Presbyterian Church and the Fairview High School Key
- 3:50Club were tremendously helpful. Smith said the church also helped
- 3:56the museum secure grants to help buy supplies and pay
- 4:00talent for the event. A silent auction featuring a slew
- 4:05of prizes highly contributed to fundraising as well. Smith mentioned
- 4:11a number of community members who tossed in a helping hand,
- 4:14from decorating to making signs, to hauling treasured items from
- 4:19the Knuckles Museum to the Highlands and more. Smith said
- 4:24his aunt Angel Hill was at the dinner Saturday. Hill
- 4:28has regularly donated to the museum from the beginning. Smith
- 4:32said he is grateful to the Highlands for hosting. He said,
- 4:37I think we pulled it off quite nicely. Smith said,
- 4:40I tried to up my game each year. Smith did
- 4:44not yet have a final tally on funds raised as
- 4:47of Monday, but he said he could comfortably label it
- 4:51a success. The family of Ceb Knuckles made a significant donation.
- 4:58Appalachian Community Fund did as well. Smith said. Mayor Charles
- 5:03had to call on Smith twice to come up and
- 5:06receive his key to the city. Come on, Darryl, the
- 5:09mayor said, with a laugh. I don't like patting myself
- 5:13on the back. Smith said, but I'm proud of the
- 5:16work we've done, and I'm proud of how successful the
- 5:19museum has become. The love and support and kindness I

- 10:54Bluegrass for the Bowman, will be at two pm March
- 10:57twenty eighth at Boyd County High School. It aims to
- 11:02raise money for the radio programmer, host and festival mc
- 11:07who is facing cancer and chemotherapy. I was shocked, McCarty
- 11:12said of when he learned about the fundraiser. When Grammy
- 11:16Award winner winning Don Rigsby reached out when I was
- 11:21going through all this chemo, he said, I don't want
- 11:24to be nosy about finances, but he wanted to know
- 11:28if McCarty would have to miss or quit working. At first,
- 11:33McCarty thought he would continue to work, and his employer
- 11:36said he could work when he felt like it. He
- 11:40was to take chemotherapy for six weeks starting February fifth.
- 11:45His cancer started as a malignant melanoma. A pet scan
- 11:50showed Don Hodgkins's slow growth lymphoma, and later a more
- 11:55aggressive form showed up. Doctor stopped the chemo temporarily to
- 12:00start him on a different treatment plan set to begin
- 12:03on Thursday and continue for six weeks. MacCarty lost his
- 12:08sister to cancer and has since participated in fundraising to
- 12:13fight the disease. One of the musicians scheduled to perform,
- 12:18Draden Gordon, said McCarty has been a great friend to
- 12:21him and to bluegrass music. He has always promoted and
- 12:26encouraged new talent the same as season pros, and I
- 12:30think that's very admirable, especially in this business, Gordon said.
- 12:36But above all, he is a genuinely great guy who
- 12:40has always gone above and beyond for everyone. This is
- 12:44our chance to return the favor and show him a
- 12:47lot of love. The event will include bluegrass music, raffles,
- 12:53auctions and food. Sound will be donated by sound Wave

- 13:29he didn't expect such support. I've been helping people out
- 13:33any way I can, and I never would have dreamed
- 13:36they would do one for me, he said. There also
- 13:40is a gofunding campaign for donations. Moving On Community Kitchen

- 14:29did it in February, but with March being National Nutrition Month,
- 14:33we decided to do it then. The kitchen has about
- 14:37two hundred boxes. Torgersen said if organizations request several, he
- 14:42can deliver then. Last year the campaign raised more than
- 14:46one thousand dollars. Increased grocery prices have prompted the kitchen
- 14:52to seek additional sources of revenue. Food is so so
- 14:58expensive and of course we don't charge people, so we
- 15:02have to find a way to purchase the food toward.
- 15:04Torgersen said, we are getting less from the pantries because
- 15:09the demand is so high everywhere, so they have to
- 15:13kind of ration it out. There are other expenses many
- 15:17don't think of, like plastic flatware. More have sought food
- 15:21from the kitchen too. Torgersen said on Thursday they fed
- 15:26seventy five at lunch time. Many days the lunch crowd
- 15:30numbers thirty or forty. He said that day Giovanni sponsored

- 21:05Callahan said. Chic so it's trendy, cute, you're gonna like
- 21:10wearing it. Classic, it's going to last a while. Not
- 21:14cheap fashion, fast fashion, and comfort because who doesn't want
- 21:20comfortable clothes, Callahan said. Callahan said the goal, aside from
