- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good evening from the chicken coop putting the
- 0:31girls away. But I could not wait till
- 0:33tomorrow morning to record this because I'm absolutely filled
- 0:37with excitement that to share with you guys that today after
- 0:41years of setting up this beautiful butterfly garden for
- 0:46all the butterflies to come into and focusing on milkweeds and
- 0:50flowers and pollinators, today I got to film a monarch
- 0:56Caterpillar going into its chrysalis.
- 1:00Like I saw it hanging. I knew when they, you know, when
- 1:03they obviously go into that fish hook shape and it's hanging
- 1:07underneath a leaf that it's about to happen.
- 1:10Well, I thought it was about to happen.
- 1:11So I panicked and I ran in. Mind you, I'm walking doing
- 1:16coaching sessions and I saw it. So I was like, OK, I'm just
- 1:20going to set my camera up and it looks like it's going to happen.
- 1:23So that was at like 10:00 in the morning, and I'm waiting and I'm
- 1:28waiting and I shut the camera off because I don't want to
- 1:30waste all the battery. And I've got my little DJI out
- 1:32there and I'm filming it. And I kept going back and
- 1:35nothing's happening. Nothing's happening.
- 1:37It's just hanging there. It's like in a trance and you're
- 1:40watching it and it's literally just hanging in that U shape,
- 1:44like a candy cane upside down. So I'm like, OK, I guess I'll
- 1:49just keep checking and see when I start to notice something
- 1:52happening, then I'll turn my camera on.
- 1:54Then I get concerned because OK, it's hot, the camera's in the
- 1:58sun. I'm like, OK, so I'm trying to
- 2:01block it, get the whole setup. I mean, this was like epic,
- 2:03guys. You should have seen it.
- 2:04It was like I had to MacGyver this thing because the tripod
- 2:08for it is very small typically. So I had to get out a ladder,
- 2:12set it on the tripod, get it close enough because you can't
- 2:15zoom in and the wind is blowing. And it's this attached itself to
- 2:20this little tiny leaf that's on the the milkweed that I grew.
- 2:26So I'm like, OK, I'm just bringing all my gear out.
- 2:29I'm just going to start photographing other things, keep
- 2:31myself occupied, coaching, doing all these things.
- 2:35So waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting,
- 2:39waiting. And I'm like, Oh my God, does
- 2:42this ever happen? Like I know what happens.
- 2:44I'm asking myself all these questions, attempting to manage
- 2:47my emotions, which are not working out well at all because
- 2:51I'm mixed with excitement and trepidation.
- 2:53And I'm wondering, is it not turning because I'm watching it?
- 2:57Like this is one of those things, like if I watch it, will
- 3:00it never happen? And just about 4:00, I started
- 3:05to notice that it was starting to do this little shaking thing
- 3:09like it was the whole body was shaking and I was like, oh,
- 3:12something's going to happen. So I turned the camera on and I
- 3:15said to myself, I'm and I was doing a session.
- 3:19So I just turned the camera on because I had to focus on my
- 3:21client. And I was like, you know what,
- 3:22I'm not even going to stand near here.
- 3:23I'm going to walk my loop and I'm just going to let the camera
- 3:26roll and I'll come back. And an hour later when I
- 3:29finished my session, I walked back and the whole process had
- 3:33been done, that it was transformed, it was in its
- 3:36chrysalis, it was completely set up and it was done.
- 3:40And I could not believe it. I shut the camera off and I
- 3:43tears were just streaming down my face.
- 3:45Now this may seem silly, but you know, those of you who are
- 3:48regular listeners know I have been transforming this water
- 3:52garden into a pollinator garden for a couple years now.
- 3:56And planting and growing and ordering different kinds of
- 3:59milkweed and making sure I have everything and enough milkweed
- 4:02because, oh, it's, it's crazy because you can attract the
- 4:05butterflies, but if you don't have enough milkweed for them to
- 4:08eat when they lay the eggs and the, you have caterpillars
- 4:11appear, they die. They die because they don't have
- 4:14enough food. So I was making sure you come to
- 4:17my house. I have enough food.
- 4:19It's not like, believe me, I, it's a pet peeve of mine.
- 4:22When I go to people's houses and they invite you over and then
- 4:25they don't have enough food. It, it makes me crazy.
- 4:27I would rather have tons of food for everybody.
- 4:30So I follow that rule here and they have tons of food.
- 4:34So mind you, the tears are streaming down my face.
- 4:37I caught it on camera. And then all of a sudden I start
- 4:39looking around and I notice how many other very large monarch
- 4:44caterpillars I have. And I'm counting and I'm like,
- 4:47you know, 2468 and I like 19 caterpillars and that's the ones
- 4:54that I could find and count. And I'm like, Oh my gosh, it's
- 4:58happening. And then the, the, the biggest
- 5:01thing of the day, besides this huge thing of the day was
- 5:05there's a male and a female and I'm watching them and all of a
- 5:08sudden they're like locked. They're in a complete lock.
- 5:12They're mating. And I got to photograph the
- 5:15process of it. I couldn't put the video camera
- 5:17on it because I was videoing the other process, but they locked
- 5:21up and I got a sequence of still shots showing it.
- 5:26And I was like, unbelievable, the, the, the gifts that I got
- 5:30today with all of this, we're just so epic for me.
- 5:34And I think what was so important to me in the whole
- 5:37process and why I was so excited to share this was I've been
- 5:40waiting for this for, you know, two years plus.
- 5:44And it was worth every bit of it.
- 5:46And it's, you know, it's over so quickly.
- 5:48And now that garden is completely like the the milkweed
- 5:52flowers have passed and I can't do anything.
- 5:56I can't touch it. I can't cut anything down, I
- 5:58can't replant. I can't do anything because
- 6:00there are baby eggs in there. There are more caterpillars
- 6:04coming, there are the chrysalis's are all hanging.
- 6:07And it's just an exercise in patience that the universe is
- 6:11teaching me, but it's giving me absolutely beautiful gifts in
- 6:15the process. And I just sat there and I was
- 6:17in awe of what I witnessed. So no matter how long your
- 6:21things take to come to fruition, no matter how long your goals
- 6:24take to hit, just pause and be grateful for them when they show
- 6:28up. Because damn my friends, this
- 6:30was a good one. And it might seem silly and it's
- 6:34not a big financial goal and it's not like, oh, I got a new
- 6:37book out or oh, I did that. Nope.
- 6:39It was a very simple thing of giving back and wanting to feel
- 6:43like I lived in a butterfly house.
- 6:45And today, Oh my God, now it just inspired me to say what the
- 6:50hell am I going to do next year? So I hope you guys have a
- 6:54blessed day. I'm sending you all a huge hug
- 6:56and I will see you all tomorrow. Bye.
