- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to the Kenny Wallace Show
- 0:03brought to you by Jags, the leader in high performance
- 0:07aftermarket car parts. Remember to go to jags.com and
- 0:12they are telling me that they have Jeep parts and truck parts
- 0:16in and that is the big deal right now at Jags.
- 0:20And of course they have everything to fix your hot rod
- 0:22up. All right, a little surprise
- 0:25today. There's the leader of our pack,
- 0:28Charlie Marlo. Charlie, how you doing?
- 0:30I'm doing great, Herm. How about yourself?
- 0:33I'm still excited that you have that Dover background.
- 0:37Look at look at that crowd. There's so many people in the
- 0:41grandstands. Why?
- 0:45Yeah, they look good. Well, Charlie, listen, we have
- 0:47something brewing that we thought was interesting, and I
- 0:53am going to set the parameters, and I want your opinion on this.
- 0:59This is going to go where nobody thinks we're going to go.
- 1:03And it was you. It was you that came up with
- 1:05this. And you shocked me because you
- 1:08know more about racing now than I know.
- 1:11So my brother Rusty. Hey, Herman, you always got to
- 1:15say my brother Rusty, well, it's Charlie's fault because he's the
- 1:20one that OK. Rusty Wallace.
- 1:22The great Rusty Wallace. All right, 55 NASCAR Cup wins,
- 1:29706 races, NASCAR Cup champion, 349 top tens, 36 poles.
- 1:40So it's fair to say that Rusty Wallace is great, and he is
- 1:43great, 'cause he's in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:46He's a champion. 55 wins. Now here's where the fun comes
- 1:50in, and this is where we need all the people.
- 1:53We need you to respond right here.
- 1:55Denny Hamlin, OK Rusty retired from NASCAR 50.
- 2:00Denny Hamlin is 43 right now. And in the past, this is where
- 2:05we've seen Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jeff Burton, Bobby
- 2:11Labonte, All these NASCAR drivers start retiring around
- 2:15this age. Listen to these stats, how
- 2:19eerily identical they are. So Denny Hamlin, 658 races.
- 2:26How many less races is that Charlie than Rusty Wallace?
- 2:29I believe it is 48. OK, so Denny Hamlin is 48 less
- 2:34races than Rusty Wallace. Denny's got 54 wins.
- 2:39Rusty Wallace got 55. Rusty got 36 polls.
- 2:45Denny Hamlin got 41. Danny Hamlin got 343 top threes,
- 2:51Rusty 349. I'm going to tell you what, Top
- 2:5610s. OK, so Rusty's got 349, top 10s.
- 3:02Danny Hamlin has 343. I mean, these numbers are eerily
- 3:09single digit off. Except the starts.
- 3:13That's pretty crazy. So the question is who will end
- 3:17up being the best statistically capital statistically?
- 3:24Who will end up being the best statistically?
- 3:26And Charlie, my question you is this, will Denny Hamlin win that
- 3:33championship? First of all, I want Denny
- 3:37Hamlin to win the championship. Isn't it starting to feel like
- 3:40this could be his year? I don't know.
- 3:42Maybe it's because he's always in the news and he's got the
- 3:45podcast and all that. Yeah, when I was just, I was on
- 3:48Wikipedia and I always go and look at some of these drivers
- 3:51and I could not this was this was a month or so ago.
- 3:54I could not believe how close Denny Hamlin and your brother
- 3:58Rusty Wallace are in terms of those stats.
- 4:00It's it's pretty Dang crazy how close they are.
- 4:03I guess it also comes down to how much do you look at the
- 4:07championship now? In his, in his press conference
- 4:10the other day, Denny said. I mean, what was the quote?
- 4:14I think I'm. A better driver.
- 4:17Than guys, than some guys that have won a championship.
- 4:19And he said, look, I'd rather take sixty wins and no
- 4:22championships. Easy over 1 championship and
- 4:26twenty wins. Now this is different because he
- 4:28and Rusty have the same amount of wins.
- 4:29I think it's fair to say that he needs the championship until he
- 4:33wins the championship. I don't think it's fair to say
- 4:36he's better than Rusty now. If he finishes with 65 wins,
- 4:41maybe Can you can you open that conversation back up?
- 4:44But I think Denny needs a championship to say that he had
- 4:48a better career than Rusty Walls.
- 4:50What do you think? Well, I want to say this, Denny
- 4:55Hamlin is a lot like Rusty because they both ran their
- 4:58mouth. It's in the Wallace genes as
- 5:01Wallace's. We can't stop talking Rusty.
- 5:04Now I think it's funny, Rusty's like, I want to be like Rodger
- 5:07Penske. I want to stay under the radar.
- 5:09And I'm like, when the hell did what?
- 5:12You know, 'cause Rusty was the greatest sound bite in NASCAR,
- 5:17it was Daryl Walter. Rusty Rusty would talk and talk,
- 5:22and hell, he got suspended for saying the SHIT word.
- 5:26And so it's funny that Rusty Wallace and Denny Hamlin are
- 5:32eerily identical right now. I agree with you.
- 5:38Denny has to win a championship to be better than Rusty.
- 5:43However, Denny's 43. He has the ability and he has
- 5:49the time to be better than Rusty.
- 5:54I love my brother more than life, but I do want, I do want
- 5:57Denny to win the championship because I feel he deserves it.
- 6:02And I got to tell you, I feel like Denny Hamlin was accurate
- 6:05as all get out. We went over this with the great
- 6:09Michael Andretti. Michael LED as many laps as
- 6:11anybody during the Indy 500, and for one reason, the Indy 500 let
- 6:17Michael Andretti down. So when you look at Denny
- 6:21Hamlin, you know, I, I mean, I feel like Denny Hamlin's right
- 6:25in line there with the great Mark Martin.
- 6:27Mark Martin was going to win the championship and his motor blew
- 6:31up. It it flames.
- 6:34It was one of the most memorable championship losses in NASCAR
- 6:38history. The motor was built by Robert
- 6:40Yates. It was this big effort.
- 6:42So I do agree with Denny that sometimes championships are
- 6:47meant to be. I don't think it makes or breaks
- 6:50his career, but who is better, Rusty Wallace or Denny Hamlin?
- 6:56I'm going to go with you. Denny's got to win that
- 6:59championship to be better than Rusty.
- 7:02That's just my opinion. I don't think if Denny wins 60
- 7:07wins, I still don't think that makes him better than Rusty.
- 7:11But Denny, right now, if he keeps it up, they got all this
- 7:14athleticism, all these creams and all these things.
- 7:18Michael Jordan, he could go to 50 and it wouldn't be nothing.
- 7:25Yeah. And you probably saw this the
- 7:26other day where Harvick interviewed Denny and the Joe
- 7:29Gibbs guys and had the question everybody on social media was
- 7:32talking about who had the better career or whatever it was Dale
- 7:36Junior or Chase Elliott. And I think it it's fair to say
- 7:40Dale Junior is an iconic person in the sport now.
- 7:45If you wanna make the argument Chase had a better career.
- 7:47He's obviously younger, but I think also the Earnhardt name
- 7:52Dale Junior, what he does for the sport as an owner in the
- 7:55media. And I'll spin this to Rusty
- 7:57Wallace. I just think that your era,
- 8:00Rusty's era, the Dale Senior era, it's so beloved that I
- 8:05mean, Rusty Wallace is an iconic name and I don't know if the
- 8:09drivers nowadays will ever match, whether it's Rusty, Mark
- 8:14Martin, Dale Senior, you know what I'm saying?
- 8:17I just feel like the sport was different, it was bigger, it was
- 8:21less corporate and even though I think Denny Hamlin is the best
- 8:24thing going, I think he's the most interesting person in
- 8:27NASCAR right now. I still don't feel like in terms
- 8:30of cachet, in terms of the world knowing these people, I don't
- 8:34think it's the same as Rusty and Dale senior and Mark Martin in
- 8:37the 80s and 90s. Jeff Gord, I got to say that we
- 8:44will never see those iconic times ever again.
- 8:47Rusty Wallace could not walk down the street.
- 8:49Rusty Wallace and Dale Senior had to have sheriff's.
- 8:53They had to have guards. They had to have security when
- 8:56they would do autograph sessions.
- 8:58Now you get an autograph session, it's over in one hour.
- 9:01We had to shut our autograph sessions off at 2 hours.
- 9:05You had, you had people lined up around these blocks, I mean, a
- 9:09mile long. So I I like that take from you
- 9:14because if you're going to say Chase Elliott or Dale Earnhardt
- 9:21Junior man, I'm going to tell you what, Dale Junior is just
- 9:26iconic to the maximum peak. And here's why.
- 9:30Because even though he didn't do what his dad did, he did what
- 9:34his dad did successfully. You know, Dale Junior's got 20
- 9:38something wins. He didn't win the championship.
- 9:40But once again, you know, do you.
- 9:42I mean, it's like it's like Dan Marino, you know, is Dan Marino,
- 9:46is he not a good quarterback because he didn't win the Super
- 9:49Bowl. He's legendary.
- 9:51But here we are again talking about it.
- 9:53I mean I know quarterbacks that have won the Super Bowl and you
- 9:56never heard from them again. Don't even know their names.
- 9:59I think I look at the Washington Redskins.
- 10:01What was it Doug Williams, he he he he won the Super Bowl but he
- 10:06was in and out. But only I remember his name
- 10:08because it's it's a stat but if you're going to if you're going
- 10:11to say Dan Marino Doug Williams, come on.
- 10:15And and I think that's where Dale Junior definitely was
- 10:18during that iconic era. And I think with with Dale,
- 10:22maybe this isn't just about driving and I'm opening up the
- 10:24conversation into something different, but I was thinking of
- 10:28also iconic status. That's why I brought up Rusty.
- 10:31But Dale Junior, to me, what I'm 42 about Dale's, I think 49 to
- 10:36me it was also Dale Junior was MTV Cribs.
- 10:39Dale Junior was was had on backwards.
- 10:42Dale Junior was the Redbud. Car.
- 10:45Dale Junior was cool. Dale Junior brought people my
- 10:49age to know about NASCAR that didn't care about NASCAR.
- 10:53And that's where I think it differs from a Chase Elliott and
- 10:56even a Denny Hamlin, who, again, I love.
- 10:58I think Denny Hamlin is the best thing in NASCAR right now.
- 11:01He keeps it freaking interesting, but it's still on a
- 11:04different level than those guys from the 80s and 90s.
- 11:07And Charlie Model, That's why you're really good at what you
- 11:10do. Well, race fans, let's end it
- 11:11there. I forgot about that era.
- 11:15You hit a home run, Grand Slam. You're exactly right.
- 11:19Dale Junior was not afraid to go out and do it.
- 11:23I don't know what Jeff Gordon's got on going on there.
- 11:26I texted Jeff Gordon. He goes, Kenny Wallace, I love
- 11:29you like a brother, but it's just not time to come on the
- 11:32Kenny conversation. So whatever's going on over
- 11:35there at Hendrick Motorsport, they don't want their drivers to
- 11:40do anything. Hey, I won the race.
- 11:41Goodbye. All right, listen, everybody,
- 11:44please, like and subscribe. Give us your opinion.
- 11:47We both say right now that Rusty Wallace is a better person.
- 11:54Champion. What am I trying to say,
- 11:55Charlie? What is he just just what do we
- 11:58think? Figure.
- 11:59How about figure? OK, figure we we think we think
- 12:04Russell Wallace is is a better figure right now with his
- 12:07championship, but Denny Hamlin has the opportunity to kick
- 12:11Rusty's butt. I don't want to see that because
- 12:13I love my brother a lot. So respond right here.
- 12:16Tell us what you think. And we know that Denny's only
- 12:1943, but that's OK right now their stats are identical,
- 12:23except Rusty's got a championship.
- 12:26All right, everybody. Remember, we are in podcast
- 12:28form. We're on iTunes and Spotify
- 12:32until the next time Charlie and I debate something like this.
- 12:35We'll see you next time.
