Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 2: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not So Fast, my friends.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst.
- 0:18Speaker 3: And Paul, we might have a baseball series on our hands.
- 0:21Speaker 4: We may have a series. We're a bit sports tired.
- 0:23Speaker 4: If you're on the East Coast, you stayed up for
- 0:25Speaker 4: 12 innings of baseball. It's a good kind of sports tired.
- 0:27Speaker 4: World Series sports tired is the best. Coming up, we're
- 0:30Speaker 4: going to talk about NFL trades that happened and might
- 0:32Speaker 4: be happening with our guy Kevin Clark of This Is Football,
- 0:35Speaker 4: Omaha Productions and ESPN. He'll chop it up with us.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Awesome. Okay, so obviously the Rays come back. Paul, here's
- 0:41Speaker 3: one set that made me slightly nervous. There have been
- 0:44Speaker 3: four teams to have an extra inning comeback when they're
- 0:47Speaker 3: down in a playoff series. All four... The Rays being
- 0:51Speaker 3: the fourth. All three previous ones went on to win
- 0:53Speaker 3: the World Series.
- 0:53Speaker 4: But you're a this-is-over guy.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I am a hardcore this-is-over. This only happened once where
- 0:57Speaker 3: teams come back from 3-0. That's the Red Sox against
- 0:59Speaker 3: the Yankees. And yesterday I said over, over, over. But
- 1:03Speaker 3: I have to admit, just the slightest bit of doubt
- 1:05Speaker 3: crept in because of the way the Brewers did it.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Right, because you're so close. That's the thing. If this
- 1:10Speaker 4: game were a blowout and the Rays won, it wouldn't
- 1:12Speaker 4: be so big of a deal. Top of the 12.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Pratt hits the home run. Shortstop. Four for five, unbelievable game.
- 1:18Speaker 4: You're like, that's it. This kid's going to be the
- 1:20Speaker 4: David Freeze of his team. It's going to be his moment.
- 1:23Speaker 4: He hits it at the top of the 12th. They
- 1:24Speaker 4: close him out on the bottom. Everybody goes home. You
- 1:27Speaker 4: start celebrating. The error that opened up the bottom of
- 1:29Speaker 4: the 12th to me is the thing that's like, oh,
- 1:32Speaker 4: it wasn't a great hit or a great play. It
- 1:34Speaker 4: was an error on a really easy grounder to start
- 1:37Speaker 4: the inning. And then you start thinking to yourself, maybe
- 1:39Speaker 4: it's not meant to be. And I think that's where
- 1:41Speaker 4: if you're more of a Brewers fan than a player,
- 1:43Speaker 4: you're like, we had it. I was planning the parade.
- 1:45Speaker 4: I was taking the day off. And now it's like
- 1:48Speaker 4: I got to pause for a day. Odds are you're
- 1:50Speaker 4: still fine, but it just feels bad.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So if for some reason the Rays did come back,
- 1:55Speaker 3: you're saying 25 years from now we'll look back at
- 1:57Speaker 3: that error and that'll be part of the 30 for
- 2:00Speaker 3: 30 documentary.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Well, you have to pin it on something. There's a
- 2:02Speaker 4: long way to go. The Brewers will probably have a
- 2:04Speaker 4: lead at some point tonight. And even if that goes longer,
- 2:06Speaker 4: they'll probably have a lead. You know, plays like that
- 2:08Speaker 4: Bill Buckner play, that was game six. The Bartman play,
- 2:12Speaker 4: which is actually the Alex Gonzalez play with the Cubs
- 2:14Speaker 4: in 03, that was also game six. It feels too
- 2:17Speaker 4: early in a series to put all blame on one thing.
- 2:20Speaker 4: But last night felt like this close to touching the ring.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Well, I think the one reason that you might say
- 2:25Speaker 3: there's even a slice vulnerability is because they've been using
- 2:28Speaker 3: the bullpen so much in Milwaukee. And usually it works.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Last night, they failed to shut them down in the 12th.
- 2:35Speaker 3: So I'm curious, you know, Mizorowski is going to start
- 2:38Speaker 3: game five. Do you think that they've seen maybe there's
- 2:40Speaker 3: a little more vulnerability as these arms? The guys in
- 2:43Speaker 3: the Milwaukee bullpen can't pitch like this forever. At some point,
- 2:46Speaker 3: they're going to wear down at least somewhat.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Except for Ashby, the reliever from Milwaukee. He's spotless.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I mean, he has been spotless, but relievers aren't used
- 2:53Speaker 3: to throwing this many innings.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Yeah, and they couldn't let him go that much further.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Let's get to the topic last night because there was
- 2:58Speaker 4: some Monday morning quarterbacking. When you're sitting there watching, when
- 3:01Speaker 4: I'm sitting there watching, the broadcast didn't make a big
- 3:03Speaker 4: deal of it when they started the 12th. You bring
- 3:06Speaker 4: in your all-star pitcher, your flamethrower, Jacob Mizorowski. I didn't
- 3:10Speaker 4: think a lot about it before the decision was made.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I don't think on the broadcast they made a big
- 3:14Speaker 4: deal of it, but a lot of people are jabbing
- 3:17Speaker 4: Pat Murphy, the manager, saying he should have brought in Mizorowski.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Do you remember what you thought before the inning started?
- 3:22Speaker 3: Oh, listen, I'm going to protect Mizorowski at all costs, guys.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I wouldn't even consider it. I followed him more this morning.
- 3:29Speaker 3: There were a lot of Eduardo Perez of ESPN was strong.
- 3:31Speaker 3: They should have brought him in to close it out.
- 3:33Speaker 3: But I'll tell you, you know, there's no guarantee. And
- 3:36Speaker 3: Dan Patrick said this. There's no guarantee that a starter
- 3:38Speaker 3: like Mizorowski is really comfortable coming out of the pen
- 3:41Speaker 3: and will be at his best.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Look, you bring him in. You're Pat Murphy. You bring
- 3:44Speaker 4: in Mizorowski. He strikes out the side. You look like
- 3:47Speaker 4: a hero.
- 3:47Speaker 3: But how do you know he's going to strike out
- 3:48Speaker 3: the side? He's never done that.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:49Speaker 4: And also, this is probably one of those games where
- 3:52Speaker 4: Miz went into the game thinking, I know I'm available tonight.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Of course, I'm always available to World Series. But this
- 3:57Speaker 4: is not so deep. This isn't Madison Baumgartner in the
- 3:59Speaker 4: sixth and seventh game. I think they did the right thing.
- 4:02Speaker 4: They didn't panic and go to Mizorowski. They trusted the
- 4:05Speaker 4: guys who didn't come through. But it was an error
- 4:08Speaker 4: that caused it not to come through. Not the pitcher, necessarily.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Of course, they pitched there not too well afterwards.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Well, I mean, there might be a bigger picture thing here.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Mizorowski throwing that fast, his arm, you have to protect
- 4:17Speaker 3: it at all costs. I mean, say it was Steven Strasburg.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Nobody would have said bring him in. So I know
- 4:23Speaker 3: that Mizorowski eventually will sign somewhere else, but the Brewers
- 4:26Speaker 3: are not going to screw up their plan with this guy. Watch,
- 4:28Speaker 3: they're only going to use him five innings tonight at most.
- 4:30Speaker 4: All right, before we move on to football, a couple things.
- 4:32Speaker 4: We said that Rays fans shouldn't sell your tickets last night.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Imagine if you're a Rays fan who gave up their
- 4:36Speaker 4: tickets for last night's game. If this ends up being...
- 4:39Speaker 4: the run, which is unlikely.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I probably would have left in the seventh inning, to
- 4:43Speaker 3: be honest. I mean, you've got to beat traffic.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Yeah, good night's sleep. You want to get a good
- 4:46Speaker 4: night's sleep.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Okay, before we move on to football, you know, Not
- 4:49Speaker 4: So Fast is catching on. You, Not So Fast, we
- 4:51Speaker 4: watch daily. We love you. But how about Kevin Burkhart,
- 4:54Speaker 4: the host of the World Series on Fox last night,
- 4:56Speaker 4: giving us a direct shout-out, clearly.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I mean, the Brewers were poised to win the World Series,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and the Rays said, Not So Fast. How exciting is this, boy?
- 5:05Speaker 2: Hey, how exciting is this?
- 5:06Speaker 1: How happy are we? It's you.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Are you Very thoughtful of KB. Nice of him working
- 5:10Speaker 4: us into the broadcast.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he should have said not so fast
- 5:13Speaker 3: with Pabst and Perloff.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Understandable. There's a time crunch there.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Yeah, no, exactly. If they had more time, he would
- 5:17Speaker 3: have spelled it out. And given the hour, 12 noon Eastern,
- 5:20Speaker 3: NBC Sports Now and Peacock.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Yeah, and I didn't get the rest of the cut.
- 5:23Speaker 4: I'm sure Big Poppy mentioned us specifically by name. Also, MLB,
- 5:26Speaker 4: love you, MLB. Twitter, how about this one? Check this out, Perl. MLB,
- 5:30Speaker 4: not so fast with Paxton Perloff. The Rays force game five.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Should we put periods in between the words like they're doing?
- 5:36Speaker 4: I think we should have done that six or seven
- 5:38Speaker 4: weeks ago, and we didn't.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Okay. Well, this is fun. Clearly. It's catching on.
- 5:42Speaker 4: It's like we're at the World Series.
- 5:44Speaker 3: No, it's interesting. It's been sort of a slow groundswell
- 5:47Speaker 3: for the national media to pick up saying not so fast,
- 5:49Speaker 3: but now they are.
- 5:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Tom Brady, if you want to do it during your
- 5:51Speaker 4: broadcast this weekend, feel free.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Wait, before we totally move on.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Uh-oh.
- 5:55Speaker 3: What do you think? Is it over tonight? Game five?
- 5:59Speaker 4: I'm saving my prediction, but no. You can't do that now.
- 6:03Speaker 4: If you're the Rays, you're somewhat emboldened. You're playing a
- 6:06Speaker 4: little bit with house money where still nobody thinks you're
- 6:08Speaker 4: going to win this and say like, Let's just go
- 6:10Speaker 4: for it. You can use any pitcher in any situation.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think you're caught up in the moment. This is
- 6:13Speaker 3: still done, done, done. It is done.
- 6:16Speaker 4: You're triple done. You're triple done.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And in fact, I'm proud of myself because I could
- 6:20Speaker 3: have gotten nervous after last night. No, I'm going to
- 6:23Speaker 3: rely on 150 years of baseball history. It doesn't happen
- 6:27Speaker 3: to happen once. It's not happening again.
- 6:28Speaker 4: See, now you're weirdly making me want to root for
- 6:30Speaker 4: the race just so you don't look.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Well, I'm not saying they're going to close it out tonight.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I mean, maybe they'll close it out in Milwaukee, which
- 6:36Speaker 3: would be great. I'm just saying, don't all of a
- 6:38Speaker 3: sudden act like this is a tight series. It's still 3-1.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Okay, we're a week away from the NFL trade deadline.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Yesterday was quite saucy with the afternoon. It was mostly
- 6:46Speaker 4: the Colts. The Colts sent DeForest Buckner out west to 49ers,
- 6:50Speaker 4: a place he's been before. And maybe the bigger one, literally.
- 6:53Speaker 4: They're both big guys. Quentin Nelson, the first-team Hall of
- 6:56Speaker 4: Famer for the Colts, got shipped out to the Seattle Seahawks.
- 7:00Speaker 4: We talked a little bit about the Seahawks' angle of this.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Let's start with the 49ers. How much do you like
- 7:03Speaker 4: this move with the chronic injuries they always have?
- 7:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, they didn't get to Michael Penix
- 7:08Speaker 3: at all last week, so they needed some help on
- 7:11Speaker 3: the defensive line. Defensive line coming into this season was
- 7:13Speaker 3: one sort of vulnerability of this team. Bosa is coming back,
- 7:16Speaker 3: but they need a little more interior help. So this
- 7:19Speaker 3: is not just a good move. This is a great move.
- 7:21Speaker 3: He was awesome as a Niner.
- 7:22Speaker 4: DeForest Buckner will be in the rotation this weekend. He's
- 7:25Speaker 4: played there. He's played in that system. Bosa is... supposedly
- 7:29Speaker 4: coming back in Week 9, but even that.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Is iffy this week. Actually, the two are very different players.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Buckner can stop the run, which is going to be
- 7:36Speaker 3: a big issue this year because I think teams are
- 7:39Speaker 3: abandoning the pass because of the way defenses are playing everyone.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Everyone's going to try and run on you, and say
- 7:44Speaker 3: you get the Bears in the playoffs, DeForest Buckner would
- 7:46Speaker 3: be huge.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Okay, Quentin Nelson, the Seahawks, we broke that here on
- 7:49Speaker 4: Not So Fast yesterday. I like it even more than
- 7:52Speaker 4: I did yesterday. The more I think about it, Quentin
- 7:54Speaker 4: Nelson's been around so long, I thought he was like 33%
- 7:57Speaker 4: He's 30. He's at the back half of his prime.
- 8:00Speaker 4: But this guy, the past two years, he was second
- 8:03Speaker 4: team all pro. He's a sure thing. You completely added
- 8:06Speaker 4: to your offensive line, pass blocking, run blocking, and everything
- 8:10Speaker 4: with one move. And this trade, the compensation vacillates whether
- 8:14Speaker 4: he stays there or not. I love that word, vacillate.
- 8:16Speaker 4: But you paid very little to get this guy.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Basically nothing.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Basically nothing.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Third and fifth round pick. I mean, it is a
- 8:21Speaker 3: little weird. The guy who's doing the trades now for
- 8:23Speaker 3: the Colts, Ed Dodds, longtime Seattle executive. Seems like he
- 8:28Speaker 3: was doing a favor to his old team. Actually, if
- 8:30Speaker 3: you look at this, I'm very interested. Why did no
- 8:32Speaker 3: one offer a second for Quentin Nelson? Why did another
- 8:34Speaker 3: contender not jump in there?
- 8:35Speaker 4: I always wonder if something like this is about timing.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Did Seattle get in early? Did they give a package
- 8:40Speaker 4: right away and say, we need to know now? And
- 8:42Speaker 4: did the Colts seem like, you know, I want to
- 8:45Speaker 4: talk about the Colts for a second. It seems like
- 8:47Speaker 4: it's a little bit of amateur hour with the Colts
- 8:48Speaker 4: these days. You have new ownership people, new GM. You've
- 8:52Speaker 4: fired people. I think they're trying to satisfy the fans,
- 8:55Speaker 4: and I think they may have overreacted.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Satisfy the fans by trading Quinn Nelson? It's the opposite.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Right. You're taking away a legend, and they're probably going
- 9:02Speaker 4: to do it with Jonathan Taylor. I'm going to ask
- 9:03Speaker 4: you about that in a second. But it does feel
- 9:05Speaker 4: like amateur hour with the management right now, the Colts.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Now, listen, they floated Quentin Nelson to the league, I'm sure.
- 9:10Speaker 3: At least I hope so. It does say something interesting
- 9:13Speaker 3: about this upcoming draft. I heard a couple people said,
- 9:16Speaker 3: this draft is so amazing coming up. It's the deepest
- 9:18Speaker 3: draft in years that no one's giving up any picks.
- 9:21Speaker 4: And let's keep this up here for a second because
- 9:23Speaker 4: last year when they traded for Sauce Gardner, they did
- 9:25Speaker 4: that based off the hot start that they had. And
- 9:28Speaker 4: they overpaid for Sauce Gardner, a good defensive back. And
- 9:31Speaker 4: now that's coming back to bite them because of this
- 9:34Speaker 4: fire sale. they're going to lose a bunch of games.
- 9:36Speaker 4: And that Jets first round pick is going to get
- 9:37Speaker 4: higher and higher.
- 9:39Speaker 6: Right.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So why get rid of Quentin Nelson? Getting rid of
- 9:41Speaker 3: DeForest Buckner makes sense. He was complaining a lot in
- 9:44Speaker 3: the locker room. But Quentin Nelson makes no sense. And
- 9:47Speaker 3: why they couldn't get more is still a mystery to me.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I don't know. He's still the highest graded guard by
- 9:52Speaker 3: pro football focus. But I think other teams saw on
- 9:55Speaker 3: tape that maybe he's taking a big step back. Okay, Pearl.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Everyone thinks that Jonathan Taylor, the all-star running at the
- 9:59Speaker 4: All running back, is on the block. If he's not
- 10:02Speaker 4: on the block... What are you doing? If he is
- 10:05Speaker 4: on the block, what are you doing if you're the Colts?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Well, I don't know. I'm sure he is on the
- 10:09Speaker 3: block if the right offer comes in. But I don't
- 10:11Speaker 3: think they're going to get a godfather offer for a
- 10:13Speaker 3: couple reasons. One, he's expensive already. He's signed through the
- 10:15Speaker 3: next couple years at around $ 15 million to $ 17 million.
- 10:18Speaker 3: That's a lot for a running back, considering Kenneth Walker
- 10:20Speaker 3: just left Seattle for $ 15 million. The other thing is, again,
- 10:23Speaker 3: getting back, this draft is supposed to be so amazing.
- 10:26Speaker 3: A first is out of the question. Possibly a second,
- 10:29Speaker 3: but more likely a second and 28th. And if you're
- 10:32Speaker 3: the Colts, again, I don't know why you're tanking. What's
- 10:34Speaker 3: the point? You don't have a first-round pick. So all logic,
- 10:38Speaker 3: you would think, of course you're going to trade Jonathan Taylor.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I would be willing to make a small bet to
- 10:43Speaker 3: keep him because, A, they're not going to get a
- 10:45Speaker 3: good offer for him. Why would anyone give up a
- 10:48Speaker 3: first-round pick for a guy that you're going to have
- 10:50Speaker 3: to pay in a year anyway?
- 10:51Speaker 4: Okay, let's each pick a team that should pursue, maybe
- 10:54Speaker 4: overpay a little bit for Jonathan Taylor. I'll go first.
- 10:56Speaker 4: I'm going to throw out there the New York Giants.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Cam Scadaboo is a nice running back. I don't think
- 11:01Speaker 4: he has the wherewithal to keep himself healthy for 17
- 11:04Speaker 4: games and five seasons. Now, I know it's at the
- 11:06Speaker 4: back half of your career, but you find yourself, the Giants,
- 11:09Speaker 4: in a position where you're better than you expected to be.
- 11:12Speaker 4: You may have found your quarterback situation, and if I
- 11:14Speaker 4: could steal with a second-round pick, which is now a mid-second,
- 11:17Speaker 4: I'm doing that.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I don't think the Giants are rebuilding, though. I don't
- 11:22Speaker 3: think they give up the draft capital. Honestly, do you think,
- 11:25Speaker 3: does Jonathan Taylor make them a contender?
- 11:27Speaker 4: In that division, I think it seals the deal for
- 11:29Speaker 4: them to win. No, but this is a year where
- 11:32Speaker 4: the Rams are a little shaky, the 49ers are perpetually shaky,
- 11:35Speaker 4: and you've got to like the Seahawks for what they did.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Who would you make a move with? By the way,
- 11:40Speaker 3: Jonathan Taylor from New Jersey, not far from the Netherlands.
- 11:43Speaker 3: I would say Minnesota is the obvious pick, but again,
- 11:47Speaker 3: I don't think they're going to do it. I don't
- 11:50Speaker 3: think they want to pay Jonathan Taylor. I don't think
- 11:52Speaker 3: they want to give up the draft capital.
- 11:53Speaker 4: And does Minnesota think that they're a contender?
- 11:55Speaker 3: Well, yeah. See, Minnesota's closer. Yeah, I think they think
- 11:58Speaker 3: they're a contender. They're 6-0, and they have Kevin O'Connell
- 12:02Speaker 3: and Brian Flores, and if they had any offense whatsoever,
- 12:06Speaker 3: they would probably be the number one seed in the NFC.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Any offense. But still, I don't think it happens. I think...
- 12:11Speaker 3: Unfortunately for Colts fans, you're going to have Jonathan Taylor
- 12:14Speaker 3: and you're still not going to win games. What a mess.
- 12:16Speaker 4: What a mess.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Yeah, it's going to be a disaster. All right, coming
- 12:19Speaker 3: up next, I have a warm take on Anthony Edwards.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I feel terrible for that guy. And the hottest trend
- 12:25Speaker 3: in the trade deadline. Watch out, Paul. I have an
- 12:28Speaker 3: unexpected position that is going to be talked about a
- 12:30Speaker 3: lot next week. That's next. Not so fast. And you.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Very thoughtful of Kevin Burkhart to mention us by name-ish.
- 12:38Speaker 3: That was cool.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast with Paxton Perloff. It's the
- 12:43Speaker 4: Midday Pick-Me-Up. Your guy, Jason Tatum. You love this guy.
- 12:46Speaker 4: You loved him out of the draft. You said the
- 12:48Speaker 4: Sixers have to take this guy.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Yeah, he should be a 76er. Everybody knows that. But now,
- 12:53Speaker 3: as a 76er fan, I don't like him. I'm all
- 12:55Speaker 3: about Jalen Brown. And you have to choose teams. It's
- 12:59Speaker 3: like Twilight. It's like Jacob and Edward.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I was just thinking it was like Jacob and
- 13:03Speaker 4: Edward from Twilight, whoever those people are. But that's some
- 13:07Speaker 4: fantastic defense. Leaving him that open is really gutsy.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Well, listen, if you're the Nets, you are all about
- 13:12Speaker 3: that draft position. I think they finally get their pick
- 13:14Speaker 3: back next year. Actually, I'm not even sure about that.
- 13:17Speaker 3: All right. NBC Sports. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern,
- 13:21Speaker 3: you can catch a full daily lineup of sports talk
- 13:23Speaker 3: on NBC Sports Now. The channel is available live on
- 13:26Speaker 3: Peacock and free on Roku, Samsung TV +, or wherever
- 13:30Speaker 3: you stream. Look at those handsome fellas right in the
- 13:33Speaker 3: middle there. All right. It is time for Warm Takes.
- 13:37Speaker 3: It's getting a little chilly out there. Let's bring some Hot,
- 13:39Speaker 3: warm takes, Paul.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Here we go, Pearl. I'll start off. I'm going to
- 13:42Speaker 4: go back to the Indianapolis Colts and the fire sale
- 13:44Speaker 4: or whatever they're doing there. And they're not just bad,
- 13:47Speaker 4: the Colts, right now. They've given their fans reason to
- 13:49Speaker 4: be hopeless for the rest of the season and possibly
- 13:52Speaker 4: next season. They're not even getting draft capital that fixes
- 13:54Speaker 4: the problems from last year. So the last seven years
- 13:57Speaker 4: since Andrew Luck left this franchise, surprisingly, have been shaky
- 14:01Speaker 4: at best. They've had some decent seasons, like 8-9, things
- 14:04Speaker 4: like that. But you're on your third head coach since
- 14:06Speaker 4: Luck left. Quarterback's Jacoby Brissett. Rivers, Matt Ryan, Gardner Minshew,
- 14:11Speaker 4: rinse and repeat. We didn't even have room on the
- 14:14Speaker 4: graphic to put everybody. The really big one, though, the
- 14:17Speaker 4: worst move was taking quarterback Anthony Richardson with the fourth
- 14:20Speaker 4: pick of the draft. I've mentioned this before. You're taking
- 14:22Speaker 4: a guy who's a project at best, who is a
- 14:25Speaker 4: really interesting guy. That would be a great third or
- 14:27Speaker 4: fourth round pick. They decided to take him fourth overall.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Some of the players they passed on with Anthony Richardson, B.
- 14:32Speaker 4: John Robinson, Jalen Carter, Jameer Gibbs, and Jackson Smith and Jibba.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Those are guys who are probably going to the Hall
- 14:39Speaker 4: of Fame someday, all those guys. Look at that list.
- 14:41Speaker 4: They could have taken any one of those. Devin Witherspoon,
- 14:43Speaker 4: one pick later, and they would have been fine. What
- 14:45Speaker 4: I think is going on here with the Colts is
- 14:47Speaker 4: you have new-ish ownership. Now, it's the kids of the
- 14:51Speaker 4: old owner. Jim Irsay, for whatever you want to say
- 14:53Speaker 4: about him, seemed to be kind of in control of
- 14:55Speaker 4: this franchise and didn't make rash decisions. I think the
- 14:58Speaker 4: new Colts management, the new GM, the new people in charge,
- 15:01Speaker 4: they're acquiescing to the fans or trying to make moves
- 15:03Speaker 4: for the sake of moves. I go back to Sauce
- 15:05Speaker 4: Gardner last year. They overpaid for him. Daniel Jones, it's okay,
- 15:09Speaker 4: but it's time to move on. And now getting rid
- 15:11Speaker 4: of Quentin Nelson and possibly getting rid of Jonathan Taylor,
- 15:14Speaker 4: this isn't baseball. You're not rehabbing your whole franchise. You're
- 15:17Speaker 4: not trying to get picks for your minor league system.
- 15:20Speaker 4: You don't do that in football. You don't decimate your team.
- 15:22Speaker 4: The Miami Dolphins kind of did it last year, and
- 15:25Speaker 4: will it work out for them? Maybe. But it just
- 15:27Speaker 4: makes your fan base think that we're not competing for anything.
- 15:29Speaker 4: It's okay to do that in baseball because you have
- 15:31Speaker 4: that three-year plan. It's not cool in football, and it
- 15:33Speaker 4: feels like amateur hour in Indy.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Oh, you know, I'm a process guy. I don't mind
- 15:39Speaker 3: getting rid of all your veterans, but you have to
- 15:40Speaker 3: have your first-round pick.
- 15:41Speaker 4: That's the problem.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, I would take Anthony Richardson still. I mean,
- 15:45Speaker 3: the guy is 6'5, throws a beautiful pass.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Yeah, not a quarterback. I would love him in another position.
- 15:49Speaker 3: You were saying that. By the way, if he went
- 15:51Speaker 3: to a different team, I think things would have worked
- 15:52Speaker 3: out much differently for Anthony Richardson. He's got a lot
- 15:55Speaker 3: of talent. Yeah.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Let's take that bet.
- 15:58Speaker 3: I heard Kevin O'Connell speak on him once and said
- 16:00Speaker 3: he's one of the most misunderstood. He was going to
- 16:03Speaker 3: go top 10 anyway, but that's besides the point.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Well, he should be a 49er. Go to the 49ers,
- 16:07Speaker 4: sit for a year, and see if they could work
- 16:08Speaker 4: on him.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Exactly. I mean, listen, I think Indy is sort of
- 16:12Speaker 3: snakebitten since the luck trade, so I don't put it
- 16:14Speaker 3: all on Anthony Richardson. Okay, let's go, speaking of Minnesota,
- 16:18Speaker 3: to the Timberwolves. Anthony Edwards is going to be out
- 16:20Speaker 3: for two months with knee surgery. This is bumming me out.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Talk about an NBA player I love. It's Anthony Edwards. Spectacular.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Can fly. He's a competitor. Keeps the T-Wolves in series
- 16:31Speaker 3: in the playoffs. Paul, I'm a little nervous of where
- 16:33Speaker 3: this is headed because last year, during the season, he
- 16:38Speaker 3: missed games with a right knee injury. Then in the playoffs,
- 16:41Speaker 3: his left knee got hurt, and you could tell he
- 16:43Speaker 3: was not himself in the playoffs. This is the third
- 16:45Speaker 3: year he's had knee problems, 22, 24, last year, and
- 16:49Speaker 3: now he's out for two months. Now, he tried to
- 16:51Speaker 3: spend all offseason off his knee. He thought he could
- 16:54Speaker 3: fix it without surgery. Obviously, he was wrong. The way
- 16:57Speaker 3: he was playing in four games, he was great, scoring
- 16:59Speaker 3: a ton of points. But he was third in the
- 17:01Speaker 3: league with over 11 threes a game. Now, he hit
- 17:04Speaker 3: a high percentage. But do you want Anthony Edwards shooting
- 17:07Speaker 3: 11 threes a game? The reason he was doing that
- 17:09Speaker 3: is he can't drive without his knee. I don't think
- 17:12Speaker 3: we're ever, at least for a long time, going to
- 17:14Speaker 3: get full effect to Anthony Edwards. Anthony Edwards, when he's
- 17:18Speaker 3: coming down hills, one of the scariest players in the NBA.
- 17:20Speaker 3: But I am so worried that he's going to be like,
- 17:22Speaker 3: and I hate to say these names, Brandon Roy, Derek Rose,
- 17:26Speaker 3: and sort of Grant Hill, guys whose potential was never
- 17:30Speaker 3: met because of knee problems.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Well, those names are all going through my head as
- 17:33Speaker 4: you're doing your take. My thing is, I think I
- 17:35Speaker 4: like what the Minnesota Timberwolves are doing. If they're being
- 17:38Speaker 4: preventative or proactive, if you get this done and you
- 17:42Speaker 4: rest him and realize that we're looking for this guy
- 17:44Speaker 4: for the next seven years, I worry that he's going
- 17:47Speaker 4: to be a Vince Carter type, where at some point
- 17:48Speaker 4: in his career he has to change his game from
- 17:50Speaker 4: inside to outside. He's already doing it based on the numbers.
- 17:53Speaker 4: The Derrick Rose one was catastrophic. You took a career
- 17:56Speaker 4: that was going to be first ballot Hall of Famer,
- 17:58Speaker 4: and it went wonky. This guy attacks for a living,
- 18:02Speaker 4: and he's as entertaining as it gets. I hope that
- 18:04Speaker 4: this move is a real cleanup, a true cleanup, where
- 18:08Speaker 4: now he... Eases back in and makes sure he's completely 100%.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Because if you're not, don't worry about this season.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Well, they completely screwed it up, though. Why did they
- 18:14Speaker 3: not do it in June? I mean, obviously, it's the
- 18:17Speaker 3: same exact knee problem we had last year.
- 18:20Speaker 4: I do wonder if they listened to the player. And
- 18:21Speaker 4: he said, let me try to play through this. And
- 18:23Speaker 4: they listened to the player over the medical.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Well, it looks like hopefully they're doing the right thing
- 18:27Speaker 3: now because we could be robbed of a great NBA career.
- 18:29Speaker 3: And do you agree with this? He's a player who
- 18:32Speaker 3: has to win a title to get to his potential.
- 18:34Speaker 3: I think he's at that level of player.
- 18:36Speaker 4: It's early, but yeah, he's one of those guys where
- 18:38Speaker 4: he's as entertaining as... But, you know, John Morant was
- 18:40Speaker 4: in that situation. John Morant's career is barely hanging on.
- 18:42Speaker 4: He's doing okay in Portland now. Zion Williamson's career went sideways.
- 18:46Speaker 4: I would say Anthony Richardson is still in pretty darn
- 18:48Speaker 4: good shape compared to guys like that.
- 18:50Speaker 3: He's a little older than you think. He's 25. How
- 18:52Speaker 3: many years? He's six years in. I mean, I'm serious.
- 18:55Speaker 3: I think he's got... Because if he's not the athletic
- 18:57Speaker 3: Anthony Edwards, I would say by 30, a player like that,
- 19:00Speaker 3: it's way too late.
- 19:01Speaker 4: All right, let's go back to baseball last night. So,
- 19:03Speaker 4: Cooper Pratt, the Brewers shortstop, 22 years old. He was
- 19:07Speaker 4: this close to sports immortality. Okay, in the World Series
- 19:10Speaker 4: clinching game, he was 4 for 5, including the home run.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Top of the.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Bingo!
- 19:14Speaker 4: Top of the 12th to give his team the lead.
- 19:17Speaker 4: You see Brewers fans there. They could feel the trophy.
- 19:19Speaker 4: They could feel the moment. And Cooper Pratt, he would
- 19:21Speaker 4: not have won World Series MVP... That's fine. You would
- 19:24Speaker 4: have remembered this swing, and you'd remember it forever. This
- 19:26Speaker 4: would have been the first thing shown when this World
- 19:29Speaker 4: Series got played, if they somehow pulled us off. He
- 19:31Speaker 4: was a half an inning away from being mentioned in
- 19:34Speaker 4: every World Series going forth forever, like David Fries, like
- 19:37Speaker 4: those guys who had that moment, who win it for you.
- 19:40Speaker 4: He was half an inning away from being Wisconsin royalty.
- 19:43Speaker 4: He still could be. If they win this tonight or tomorrow,
- 19:45Speaker 4: he's going to be on scholarship. He'll never have to
- 19:47Speaker 4: pay for a spotted cow for the rest of his life.
- 19:50Speaker 4: But sports immortality, it's fleeting.
- 19:52Speaker 3: It goes away.
- 19:53Speaker 4: You could have it in your hands. It could go away.
- 19:55Speaker 4: If Malcolm Butler doesn't make that interception, Malcolm Butler is
- 19:58Speaker 4: this bounce-around defensive back that we don't know much about. Instead,
- 20:01Speaker 4: he's going to be played forever during Super Bowl broadcast.
- 20:04Speaker 4: So he's likely to be fine. Cooper Pratt, good player,
- 20:08Speaker 4: great night last night. He'll still get his flowers if
- 20:10Speaker 4: they win this series, but sports immortality was this close.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Okay, but there's a level here because it wasn't a walk-off. No.
- 20:16Speaker 3: So even if it had won the game, it wouldn't
- 20:19Speaker 3: be Joe Carter. It wouldn't be Giants win the pennant.
- 20:22Speaker 3: It wouldn't be Mazerowski. I believe those were all walk-offs.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Yes, and it would have been like a B-plus level
- 20:27Speaker 4: sports immortality. Like a David Freeze where when you do
- 20:31Speaker 4: these stats, who was the last guy to do this?
- 20:32Speaker 4: Like David Freeze's name came up on the Dan Patrick
- 20:35Speaker 4: show today, on this show today. And that's the thing.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Once you get it, they can't take it away from you.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Right, right. But it wouldn't be Joe Carter.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Not Joe Carter.
- 20:42Speaker 3: You need to walk it off. And the series needs
- 20:44Speaker 3: to be closer because it's been a bit of a
- 20:45Speaker 3: slaughter until that moment. Okay. For my second warm take,
- 20:49Speaker 3: let's talk about kickers, Paul. Oh, of course. It's not
- 20:52Speaker 3: so fast. We love special teams. Now, the Chiefs brought
- 20:55Speaker 3: in Justin Tucker and signed him to the practice squad today.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Of course, Justin Tucker, probable Hall of Famer, one of
- 21:00Speaker 3: the most accurate kickers in NFL history. A lot of
- 21:02Speaker 3: off-the-field plays. Trouble. It turns out he's not a great guy.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Of course, Kansas City has built their team around ignoring
- 21:08Speaker 3: character forever, so they do not care. I mean, that's
- 21:11Speaker 3: just the way Casey's proud of it.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Call it like you see it.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Now, I think Kansas City is ahead of the curve
- 21:16Speaker 3: here because Harrison Bucker is struggling. Speaking of character. I
- 21:22Speaker 3: am so sick of really good teams being hamstrung by
- 21:24Speaker 3: their kicker. And you know who the one team that
- 21:27Speaker 3: is bothering me the most? I think they could be
- 21:29Speaker 3: a real factor in the NFC, but they are such
- 21:32Speaker 3: a mess at kicker.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Packers?
- 21:33Speaker 3: Packers. Trace Mack, here's a stat. NFL kickers have made
- 21:37Speaker 3: 151 out of 154 field goal attempts of 35 or
- 21:38Speaker 3: fewer yards a season. There have been three misses. Two
- 21:44Speaker 3: of them were Trey Smack last week. You're a very,
- 21:48Speaker 3: very talented team. You cannot mess around with Trey Smack. Now,
- 21:51Speaker 3: we know the Rams have had injuries. They cut Mivas,
- 21:54Speaker 3: and now they're under Brandon McManus, who did not try
- 21:56Speaker 3: a field goal in his one game. But I think
- 21:59Speaker 3: the Chiefs are getting ahead of the curve. I bet
- 22:00Speaker 3: you other teams are going to look at, now that
- 22:02Speaker 3: he's on the practice squad, are going to want to
- 22:04Speaker 3: bring in Justin Tucker because you cannot screw around it.
- 22:07Speaker 3: There's way too much parity at the top.
- 22:08Speaker 4: And kickers make a little bit more money than they
- 22:10Speaker 4: did a generation ago. Like a team like the LA Rams,
- 22:13Speaker 4: they didn't spend at the kicker position. They said, we'll
- 22:15Speaker 4: figure it out. We spend at every other position. We're
- 22:17Speaker 4: not spinning at the kicker, and it's bitten them a
- 22:20Speaker 4: little bit. It could bite them in the playoffs.
- 22:21Speaker 3: You know the funny thing about kickers, too? Brandon Aubrey
- 22:23Speaker 3: is still the best, probably, Dallas Cowboys. He's not great
- 22:26Speaker 3: at the kickoff, which is now another issue with kickers
- 22:29Speaker 3: because that's a very impactful play. It costs them a game.
- 22:32Speaker 3: So I think that you want to invest in kicker
- 22:35Speaker 3: right now. If I'm the Packers, I would have cut
- 22:36Speaker 3: Trey Smack on Monday. I know they drafted him, and
- 22:38Speaker 3: that's rare to draft a kicker, but he's got the yips.
- 22:42Speaker 3: He might have all the talent in the world.
- 22:43Speaker 4: And in a division this close, you can't afford it.
- 22:45Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying, yeah. You can't afford it.
- 22:46Speaker 4: All right, let's go to college football weekend. We've got
- 22:48Speaker 4: a big one coming up, but let's go. College football
- 22:51Speaker 4: play of the year, a not-so-fast, Perloff. Let's do it.
- 22:54Speaker 4: Auburn wide receiver, you remember this guy? You loved his name.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Chaz Nimrod, his TD catch the other day. Beautiful catch
- 23:01Speaker 4: in the shadows. That's silly over the top of the
- 23:04Speaker 4: helmet of the defender. Chaz Nimrod, will he hold, serve
- 23:07Speaker 4: for another week? Not so sure because, let's check this
- 23:10Speaker 4: one out. Lenora Sellers, the great quarterback for South Carolina.
- 23:14Speaker 4: This run is silly. This looks like I'm on a
- 23:17Speaker 4: TV show. Over the top, planting the ball on the
- 23:21Speaker 4: end zone like a boss.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Yeah, all game long, he ran over Tennessee like they
- 23:25Speaker 3: weren't even there.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Yeah, that run doesn't even make sense. I'm going to
- 23:28Speaker 4: go slightly Lenora Sellers. Are you with me?
- 23:31Speaker 3: Ah, begrudgingly, because I love the name Chaz Nimrod.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:34Speaker 4: We can mention it a couple more times before we go.
- 23:36Speaker 3: And you say great quarterback, occasionally great quarterback, sometimes mind-boggling
- 23:40Speaker 3: quarterback of South Carolina.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Lenora Sellers was hot and has cooled and might be
- 23:44Speaker 4: warm again.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Yeah, because of that one game. I hope he doesn't
- 23:47Speaker 3: cool again this weekend.
- 23:48Speaker 1: All right.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Coming up next, we have our guy, Kevin Clark of
- 23:51Speaker 4: This Is Football, Omaha Productions, and ESPN. He'll join us
- 23:54Speaker 4: to talk about who's been traded and who might be traded.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Stick around. Not so fast.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Chaz, poor Chaz.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Chester A.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Nimrod.
- 24:03Speaker 3: All right, so we're going with Lenores.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Yeah, but Lenores, that plant move was like.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, he looked like an adult playing with kids
- 24:09Speaker 3: in the backyard. Welcome back to Not So Fast. Andrew Perloff,
- 24:14Speaker 3: Paul Papps. Busy week here, obviously, with the World Series,
- 24:17Speaker 3: but we also have to break down the NFL trade
- 24:18Speaker 3: deadline some more, Paul. And who better to do that
- 24:21Speaker 3: than ESPN's host of This Is Football and someone who's
- 24:25Speaker 3: been on my flight to the Super Bowl every year
- 24:27Speaker 3: for 10 years, of course, talking about Kevin Clark. Now, Kevin,
- 24:31Speaker 3: do you want to start with the NFL trade deadline
- 24:33Speaker 3: or brag about the Miami Hurricanes?
- 24:36Speaker 1: I can do both. I'll start with the Miami Hurricanes.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And by the way, when I say both, I mean
- 24:41Speaker 1: it's because I can weave the Miami Hurricanes into any conversation.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I've been doing that in every show for the past month.
- 24:48Speaker 1: It was on Dominique Foxworth's show, and they asked me
- 24:51Speaker 1: about something with the NFL, and somehow I brought it
- 24:54Speaker 1: back to Miami. So I can do both, trust me.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Let's start with Miami. Got the Notre Dame game on
- 25:01Speaker 1: NBC in a couple weeks that I think is going
- 25:04Speaker 1: to end up being– the game of the season. I
- 25:06Speaker 1: thought it was going to be number one versus number two.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Notre Dame did not do their part. Uh, they would
- 25:11Speaker 1: be if, if both teams had won out and Notre
- 25:13Speaker 1: Dame had beaten BYU. Uh, but it, it, it's just
- 25:15Speaker 1: really cool to see. And, and what's funny is that
- 25:19Speaker 1: somebody had said to me recently, like there's this huge
- 25:22Speaker 1: gap in people who know what, what Miami is. And
- 25:25Speaker 1: it's people between about, Ooh, I'd say like if you're
- 25:31Speaker 1: under 40, uh, It's it's been a while. If you're
- 25:34Speaker 1: under 35, it's been a while. But if you're over 50,
- 25:37Speaker 1: you get it right. And like we're going through the
- 25:39Speaker 1: whole thing with with with whether or not Miami can
- 25:42Speaker 1: go independent. Somebody in the in sports media, because the
- 25:45Speaker 1: president said last week they might. Somebody in sports media
- 25:48Speaker 1: said one thing Miami is going for it. All the
- 25:50Speaker 1: decision makers are 55-year-olds who are like, oh, my God,
- 25:54Speaker 1: I remember Miami. If it was a bunch of Zoomers,
- 25:57Speaker 1: we'd be screwed.
- 25:58Speaker 4: And, Kevin, as you mentioned, our buddy Jarrett Payton, who
- 26:00Speaker 4: was on that 2001 team, he texted me pictures. He
- 26:02Speaker 4: was down for the reunion weekend of that 01 team.
- 26:05Speaker 4: And they showed that shot this weekend during the Miami
- 26:07Speaker 4: game on the sidelines. Like, I recognize that guy. I
- 26:09Speaker 4: recognize that guy. There's Ed Reed. There's tons of celebrity players.
- 26:13Speaker 4: But it does feel like the one criticism or the
- 26:15Speaker 4: knock on Miami right now is similar to what Notre
- 26:18Speaker 4: Dame did. Have they beat anybody heavy? But that's not
- 26:21Speaker 4: their fault. They're beating everyone and looking good doing it.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and I continue to say, first of all, some
- 26:29Speaker 1: of it, I know every team is different. Some of
- 26:31Speaker 1: can Miami play with the big boys was answered in
- 26:33Speaker 1: the playoffs last year when they beat Ohio State and
- 26:34Speaker 1: Ole Miss and Texas A & M. and could have
- 26:37Speaker 1: very easily beaten Indiana if a couple of plays had
- 26:39Speaker 1: gone a different way. But Miami's trying to join the
- 26:45Speaker 1: SEC or Big Ten, and Congress is trying to step
- 26:49Speaker 1: in to prevent it. So I think that that's an
- 26:54Speaker 1: ACC problem. It stinks that Clemson and Florida State aren't
- 26:57Speaker 1: what they once were. Wake Forest is actually pretty good.
- 26:59Speaker 1: I think that they're going to show people by January
- 27:02Speaker 1: that they're a good ball club. But yeah, it's a
- 27:05Speaker 1: wait and see. And it's funny, when I have draft
- 27:08Speaker 1: people on the show, we talk about it. it's, it's
- 27:12Speaker 1: one game, two game seasons now for some of these teams,
- 27:14Speaker 1: Notre Dame, same way. Um, you know, basically three game season,
- 27:18Speaker 1: if you count SMU was the third one. And so
- 27:20Speaker 1: it's not just about the AP poll or the, or
- 27:23Speaker 1: the playoffs, it's about NFL scouts watching these, these guys
- 27:26Speaker 1: and saying, Hey, can Darian Mensah, uh, do it against
- 27:30Speaker 1: Notre Dame? Uh, or can he do it, you know, against, uh,
- 27:33Speaker 1: you know, Texas in the playoff, or do we have
- 27:35Speaker 1: to watch him against, uh, you know, North Carolina, who,
- 27:39Speaker 1: you know, all respect to Bill Belichick, not a lot
- 27:41Speaker 1: of horses there.
- 27:42Speaker 3: All right, Kevin, let's turn to the NFL. The Indianapolis
- 27:45Speaker 3: Colts traded Quentin Nelson and DeForest Buckner yesterday. Can you
- 27:49Speaker 3: explain their strategy with no first-round pick next year?
- 27:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Can I explain their strategy? No. Well, it's funny because
- 28:00Speaker 1: their strategy has been job preservation for six years, and...
- 28:06Speaker 1: Now the GM's job is gone. And so I think
- 28:08Speaker 1: they're just trying to get draft capital and hit the
- 28:10Speaker 1: reset button. I think that Quentin Nelson, obviously, one of
- 28:14Speaker 1: the best players in his position. I thought it was
- 28:15Speaker 1: an awesome– it was a coup for the Seahawks to
- 28:18Speaker 1: get a guy like that. And I think a lot
- 28:20Speaker 1: of times we– read too much into strategies, right? Like
- 28:25Speaker 1: people are like, why are the Seahawks doing this? Why
- 28:26Speaker 1: were the bears involved? Well, because there was an all
- 28:28Speaker 1: pro player available for a mid round pick and people
- 28:31Speaker 1: are going to call. That's how that goes. That's a
- 28:33Speaker 1: good GMs do it. But from the Colt side, I
- 28:35Speaker 1: don't know. Um, is Jonathan Taylor up for grabs? Um,
- 28:39Speaker 1: are some of these other guys, is everybody up for grabs?
- 28:41Speaker 1: Are they trying, what are they trying to do? They
- 28:43Speaker 1: don't have a first round pick there. They, you know,
- 28:45Speaker 1: if they, if they tank, that only helps the jets. Um, Um,
- 28:48Speaker 1: and God bless him. The jets don't get a lot
- 28:49Speaker 1: of help. So this is their one break. Uh, so I, I, I,
- 28:53Speaker 1: I don't know. I think they're just trying to, um,
- 28:55Speaker 1: you know, I think a lot of times teams want
- 28:59Speaker 1: to take all their salary cap medicine as quickly as
- 29:01Speaker 1: possible so they can start the rebuild. You see this, uh,
- 29:04Speaker 1: Miami did it a few years ago. They're doing it again. Actually. Um,
- 29:07Speaker 1: the bills did that when Brandon Bean took over is
- 29:10Speaker 1: you take these huge dead cap charges and you say, Hey, listen,
- 29:13Speaker 1: by the time of Quentin Nelson, uh, you know, can
- 29:15Speaker 1: help us again in a big spot. He's going to
- 29:18Speaker 1: be too old or too expensive. Let's move on. So
- 29:20Speaker 1: it's more of that, I would say, is greasing the
- 29:24Speaker 1: wheels for a rebuild, which starts with draft capital and
- 29:27Speaker 1: cap space.
- 29:28Speaker 4: You know, Kevin, when you look at this, the 49ers
- 29:30Speaker 4: making a play for Buckner, the Seahawks, do you find
- 29:33Speaker 4: yourself week to week vacillating who you want to pick
- 29:36Speaker 4: of the NFC West? Because the other day I felt
- 29:39Speaker 4: great about the Rams. I'm like, okay, they cleaned up
- 29:40Speaker 4: their mess. But then Quentin Nelson, I'm like, oh, the
- 29:42Speaker 4: Seahawks are so smart. I cannot from day to day choose.
- 29:47Speaker 1: It's impossible. It's not the Cardinals. Thank you, Cardinals, for
- 29:49Speaker 1: making it very easy and not making it four wide
- 29:51Speaker 1: or three wide. But I'm with you. And I also
- 29:55Speaker 1: think that the emergence of the 49ers this year changed
- 29:59Speaker 1: the entire calculus of the division. Because I thought it
- 30:01Speaker 1: was going to be Seahawks-Rams, Seahawks-Rams, Seahawks-Rams, ping-ponging back and forth.
- 30:05Speaker 1: The Rams, all of a sudden, are incomplete. They're sloppy.
- 30:09Speaker 1: The Seahawks, a couple issues. Some of them related to
- 30:11Speaker 1: Kenneth Walker, which was that their short yardage game just
- 30:14Speaker 1: isn't what it was. Sam Darnold is turning the ball over,
- 30:17Speaker 1: but he was turning the ball over last year until
- 30:18Speaker 1: he locked in. So that's just kind of who he is.
- 30:23Speaker 1: You know, JSN is... the highest share of yards in
- 30:28Speaker 1: history or something, but he was number five in history
- 30:31Speaker 1: last year. So it's a lot of the same kind
- 30:34Speaker 1: of check engine lights, and I think that the Seahawks
- 30:37Speaker 1: will figure that out. The Rams, to me, are more
- 30:39Speaker 1: worrying because it's health. What's funny is the Niners are injured,
- 30:45Speaker 1: but they seem to be able to overcome it. What's
- 30:48Speaker 1: funny is everybody talked about the Niners' age coming into
- 30:52Speaker 1: this season, and very few people talked about the Rams'
- 30:54Speaker 1: age coming into this season. And if you look at it,
- 30:56Speaker 1: the difference wasn't that significant. In fact, one of the
- 31:02Speaker 1: reasons people talked less about the Rams' age was that
- 31:04Speaker 1: they had an infusion of young talent, guys like Braden Fisk,
- 31:07Speaker 1: guys like Puka Nakua. Obviously, he's banged up as well.
- 31:10Speaker 1: But every day, you're right, it's a week-to-week division. And
- 31:15Speaker 1: I think all three teams will end up making the playoffs,
- 31:18Speaker 1: but I'm really intrigued to see which of those teams
- 31:21Speaker 1: can actually make a Super Bowl run because... They each
- 31:23Speaker 1: have their own questions, and those questions seem to change
- 31:26Speaker 1: every week.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Kevin, I think you picked the Eagles this year. Am
- 31:30Speaker 3: I correct?
- 31:31Speaker 2: I did.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Listen, I'm an Eagles fan. If I give you a
- 31:35Speaker 3: mulligan right now out of the NFC, who would you pick?
- 31:38Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. I love Tanner McKee. Run it back, baby. Yeah,
- 31:45Speaker 1: I believed in the roster talent of the Eagles, Andrew,
- 31:48Speaker 1: and it's not there. Yeah.
- 31:50Speaker 3: Well, I mean, injuries. You're good with injuries. Yeah.
- 31:54Speaker 1: It's fine. And the reason I picked him before I
- 31:57Speaker 1: do my mulligan was that I kept going on training camp.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I went to the Eagles first. And there were so
- 32:02Speaker 1: many guys, you know this, who I'm like, oh, this
- 32:07Speaker 1: guy right here that nobody talks about in the Eagles,
- 32:09Speaker 1: if everybody's healthy, would be the third best player on
- 32:12Speaker 1: some of these contenders. Guys know Jordan Mailata, Quinion Mitchell,
- 32:15Speaker 1: Zach Bond. Guys who never come up nationally would be
- 32:18Speaker 1: the second best player on the Buffalo bills or, you know,
- 32:22Speaker 1: some years since 90 bangles, Baltimore Ravens, that, that, that
- 32:24Speaker 1: kind of thing.
- 32:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:25Speaker 1: So that's why I picked them. I just thought they
- 32:26Speaker 1: were so deep. Well, the depth that got tested, it's
- 32:28Speaker 1: gone Mulligan, you know, I'm starting to change my mind
- 32:34Speaker 1: on the Chicago bears. Um, I, I, I didn't think
- 32:38Speaker 1: the first couple of weeks they could big 12 this and, um,
- 32:46Speaker 1: What I mean by that, if you don't watch college ball,
- 32:48Speaker 1: is win 52-30. And they can. They can. And the
- 32:55Speaker 1: bills are a little bit like this, too. Just get
- 32:57Speaker 1: a couple turnovers, catch your picks, give the ball back
- 33:00Speaker 1: to the offense, and let's go. And they were able
- 33:02Speaker 1: to do that last year. They were historically good last year,
- 33:06Speaker 1: the Bears were, at catching picks without getting pressure, which
- 33:10Speaker 1: is rare. They're not on that pace this year, but
- 33:12Speaker 1: I think that they can get enough turnovers, get off
- 33:15Speaker 1: the field, game changers, whatever, and then make the Super Bowl.
- 33:21Speaker 1: I would not be shocked by that at all. And
- 33:23Speaker 1: I also think that kind of like what we're seeing with,
- 33:26Speaker 1: and he gets a lot of press, but we didn't
- 33:29Speaker 1: clock that Mike McDonald was the type of guy who
- 33:33Speaker 1: could win a Super Bowl until it was too late.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And I think with Ben Johnson, we're seeing it earlier,
- 33:39Speaker 1: but a lot of times, And this sounds so stupid,
- 33:43Speaker 1: but it helps me. A lot of times I'll look
- 33:45Speaker 1: at all the rosters, look at all the coaching staff,
- 33:47Speaker 1: look at the quarterbacks, and I'll just say, what's the
- 33:50Speaker 1: team where I go in five years, of course they
- 33:53Speaker 1: won the Super Bowl, or of course they won the NFC.
- 33:55Speaker 1: And it's like you're looking at it and you're going, hmm,
- 33:57Speaker 1: Ben Johnson, Caleb Williams, a wide open league when you consider–
- 34:03Speaker 1: The NFC East has become the NFC South. The NFC
- 34:05Speaker 1: South is still the NFC South. Packers have these holes
- 34:07Speaker 1: in the offensive line. The Lions have the secondary problems.
- 34:10Speaker 1: The Vikings don't have a hole at quarterback right now.
- 34:13Speaker 1: And the NFC West is still sorting itself out. So
- 34:16Speaker 1: if I'm going, who in 2031 am I looking back
- 34:20Speaker 1: on and saying, yeah, that sounds right. Right now it's
- 34:22Speaker 1: the Bears.
- 34:23Speaker 4: Okay, Kev, before we get you out of here, we
- 34:25Speaker 4: love your show. This is football, and we want to
- 34:27Speaker 4: talk training camps all the time with you.
- 34:30Speaker 3: We have.
- 34:30Speaker 4: Perloff is saying we've got to do a little side bet.
- 34:32Speaker 4: You're a Miami guy. I don't know if you know.
- 34:34Speaker 4: Southside Chicago, Irish Catholic by default. I'm a Notre Dame guy.
- 34:38Speaker 4: What's the bet, Perloff? Are we setting something up here?
- 34:40Speaker 3: Oh, my God. Yeah. Well, you're both foodies. I don't know.
- 34:45Speaker 3: What's a.
- 34:45Speaker 4: I got one.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Well, no. It's the easiest thing in the world. It's
- 34:48Speaker 1: the easiest thing in the world. So, Paul Pabst, you
- 34:50Speaker 1: come to my town to go to Walter's Hot Dogs.
- 34:53Speaker 4: Oh, I love Walter's Hot Dogs. Great mustard.
- 34:55Speaker 1: And so... we're going to have lunch at Walter's Hot Dogs.
- 34:58Speaker 4: And if you come, if I win, you come here
- 35:00Speaker 4: and we go to Super Dewey and it's on me.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Yeah. I get to go either way, right?
- 35:04Speaker 1: Oh yeah. You come either way. You come either way.
- 35:06Speaker 3: Everyone wins.
- 35:07Speaker 1: So somebody's, somebody's driving and then picking up the tab
- 35:11Speaker 1: in the other person's town.
- 35:12Speaker 4: That's a bet.
- 35:12Speaker 3: I love it. I love it. By the way, Calvin Johnson,
- 35:14Speaker 3: this is football this week. I just saw the clips.
- 35:16Speaker 3: He looks awesome.
- 35:17Speaker 6: He is one of the coolest guys ever.
- 35:20Speaker 1: He's great. He was great. Super relaxed, and I was
- 35:26Speaker 1: super pleased with how that went. So are we doing
- 35:29Speaker 1: straight up with Notre Dame, by the way? They're favored,
- 35:31Speaker 1: but I'm happy to do straight up.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Let's do straight up. We're friends.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Oh, you've got to do straight up. What are you
- 35:35Speaker 3: talking about here?
- 35:36Speaker 1: We've got to do straight up. No, no, of course
- 35:37Speaker 1: it's straight up. It's not like it's a 10-point spread.
- 35:40Speaker 3: I'm good.
- 35:41Speaker 4: I won't blame the refs. I won't blame the clock operator.
- 35:43Speaker 4: I won't blame anybody.
- 35:45Speaker 1: You're the only Irish fan not blaming Notre Dame. the
- 35:48Speaker 1: refs and the clock these days.
- 35:49Speaker 3: All right, Kevin, thanks for the time. Good luck on
- 35:52Speaker 3: November 7th. We'll be calling you. Later, bud. That's Kevin Clark,
- 35:56Speaker 3: of course, from ESPN. This is football. Paul, I don't know.
- 35:59Speaker 3: How do you feel? I mean, he just offered you points.
- 36:01Speaker 3: That's almost embarrassing for a Notre Dame fan.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Yeah, we have a bet. I like it. It's a
- 36:04Speaker 4: fun little bet. Either way, Perloff, you found a way
- 36:06Speaker 4: to eat hot dogs on the house. Good job by you.
- 36:08Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I'm a fan of both places. All right,
- 36:10Speaker 3: coming up next, we're going to break down Charles Barkley's
- 36:13Speaker 3: amazing interview on the Dan Patrick Show. So much to
- 36:15Speaker 3: dive into. Not so fast.
- 36:17Speaker 4: So Walters, they do split dogs, and they grill them.
- 36:20Speaker 4: Great mustard. Super Dabrini has lots of options.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Okay.
- 36:23Speaker 4: Either way you win.
- 36:24Speaker 3: All right. Whatever you say, I'm in.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Why is this not working between Bam and Giannis?
- 36:34Speaker 5: Because basically, they got four guys out there just standing
- 36:37Speaker 5: to watch Giannis go one on four, one on five
- 36:40Speaker 5: the whole time. Like, Giannis is a great player, but
- 36:45Speaker 5: I'm not sure it would be a lot of fun
- 36:47Speaker 5: just to stand out there and watch him go and
- 36:49Speaker 5: get his numbers. And there's no ball movement.
- 36:52Speaker 1: There's no body movement.
- 36:54Speaker 5: Now, it worked that one year when they had Drew
- 36:57Speaker 5: Holiday and Chris Middleton. But let's be honest, that's the
- 37:00Speaker 5: only year it's actually worked. Bama just standing out there
- 37:03Speaker 5: picking his nose. That can't be any fun for him.
- 37:08Speaker 5: And then other guys, it's hard for them to get
- 37:10Speaker 5: in the rhythm because they don't know when they're going
- 37:12Speaker 5: to get the ball.
- 37:15Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast with Pabst and Perloff, this
- 37:17Speaker 4: is a clip joint, and that is the lean, mean
- 37:18Speaker 4: Charles Barkley talking about the Heat's slow start.
- 37:21Speaker 3: I'm not surprised the Heat aren't good. I feel like
- 37:23Speaker 3: this was an ease into retirement move by Giannis. If
- 37:26Speaker 3: he wanted to win a title, he could not have
- 37:27Speaker 3: possibly said, that is the roster that I'm going to
- 37:30Speaker 3: do it with.
- 37:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I could see him trusting the Heat as a
- 37:32Speaker 4: franchise overall, and Bam Adebayo is at the back half
- 37:35Speaker 4: of his prime. You have those two nice things, but
- 37:37Speaker 4: then the rest of the roster, there's not a lot
- 37:39Speaker 4: of help.
- 37:39Speaker 3: Well, I mean, listen, LeBron goes to Philadelphia with three
- 37:42Speaker 3: or four All-Stars. And for Giannis, Miami has one All-Star
- 37:46Speaker 3: who's a bit duplicative in skill set. So Bam isn't
- 37:49Speaker 3: doing anything there. I am not surprised at all by
- 37:52Speaker 3: the slow start.
- 37:52Speaker 4: All right, here's a little more of Charles Barkley. Now,
- 37:55Speaker 4: he and Michael Jordan, everyone knows they haven't gotten along
- 37:57Speaker 4: well the past generation, how long that's been. But supposedly,
- 38:01Speaker 4: Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan are going to play golf
- 38:03Speaker 4: again very, very soon.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Are you playing golf with Michael Jordan yet? Not yet.
- 38:10Speaker 1: We haven't gotten together.
- 38:11Speaker 5: We're going to get together. He's been busy. He was
- 38:14Speaker 5: out of the country all summer, and he's finishing up
- 38:17Speaker 5: the NASCAR thing, but I'm looking forward to it. I'm
- 38:20Speaker 5: fine-tuning my game right now, Dan.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Are you going down to his home course? Yes. How
- 38:27Speaker 2: much money will be wagered on that?
- 38:31Speaker 5: I don't like playing more than $ 1, 000 a hole, to
- 38:34Speaker 5: be honest with you.
- 38:35Speaker 1: I get a little nervous because the worst you can
- 38:37Speaker 1: lose is 18.
- 38:38Speaker 5: But you're only probably going to lose $ 5, 000 or $ 6, 000
- 38:40Speaker 5: when you get your strokes, and that's not a lot
- 38:43Speaker 5: of money.
- 38:45Speaker 4: I really hope this happens. If you watch those old
- 38:47Speaker 4: Dream Team videos, Michael and Chuck were like this, and
- 38:50Speaker 4: then it went away for a while. Charles' criticism when
- 38:52Speaker 4: he was running the Hornets. As a producer, I would
- 38:56Speaker 4: give out a check for whatever they wanted. Remember that thing,
- 38:58Speaker 4: the match?
- 38:59Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:00Speaker 4: If I could... I'm speaking to you, networks out there.
- 39:03Speaker 4: I'm speaking to you, Charles Barkley and his production company
- 39:05Speaker 4: and Michael Jordan. Blank checks. I want mic'd up, 18 holes,
- 39:09Speaker 4: Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan. Sponsors will line up to do this.
- 39:14Speaker 4: TV networks will line up to broadcast this. Everybody would
- 39:17Speaker 4: watch this event. Get Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan. Put
- 39:21Speaker 4: some other people with them if you want or don't.
- 39:22Speaker 3: Whatever.
- 39:23Speaker 4: Get those guys mic'd up and do a TV show
- 39:24Speaker 4: off this golf.
- 39:25Speaker 3: Has Jordan ever done any of these? I know Steph's
- 39:27Speaker 3: done them, Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers, dot, dot, dot. Has
- 39:30Speaker 3: he ever been in a match?
- 39:31Speaker 4: Jordan doesn't do anything. I mean, this is going to
- 39:33Speaker 4: be impossible.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Well, he did a little NBC.
- 39:35Speaker 4: A little bit of NBC, but somehow figure out a
- 39:39Speaker 4: charity angle, get Charles Barkley to step on the gas,
- 39:41Speaker 4: but this has to be.
- 39:42Speaker 3: A TV show. Well, it's funny, too, because Charles has
- 39:43Speaker 3: had a bit of a golf renaissance, right? Yeah. So
- 39:46Speaker 3: he's confident enough that he's playing well. I don't want
- 39:48Speaker 3: to bring back the yips for Charles. What did you
- 39:50Speaker 3: think of $ 1, 000 a hole? That's nothing for those guys.
- 39:53Speaker 4: For Michael especially, $ 1, 000 a hole, he's not bending over
- 39:56Speaker 4: to pick up.
- 39:56Speaker 6: $ 1, 000.
- 39:56Speaker 3: I have another question about Charles Barkley, who is amazing,
- 39:59Speaker 3: as always, on the Dan Patrick Show.
- 40:01Speaker 4: So.
- 40:03Speaker 3: Todd did an impersonation of Charles to Charles, which brought
- 40:06Speaker 3: up the Frank Caliendo impersonation. And Charles told the story
- 40:10Speaker 3: of Frank Caliendo basically impersonating Matt and Matt calling him
- 40:14Speaker 3: and asking him to be part of his lawsuit. So
- 40:16Speaker 3: then all of a sudden we get Frank Caliendo on
- 40:18Speaker 3: The Dan Patrick Show. How did it happen, Paul?
- 40:19Speaker 4: It's classic Dan Patrick Show karma. Caliendo emailed me during
- 40:24Speaker 4: the show 10 minutes before Barkley joined us, and he
- 40:26Speaker 4: was asking about Todd and the whole thing with pivoting
- 40:28Speaker 4: in Game 5. And once I realized Frank's got his
- 40:31Speaker 4: ears on, is watching and listening to the show, and
- 40:33Speaker 4: he's a regular listener and he's a great guy, I
- 40:35Speaker 4: told Todd, I'm like, call Frank now. He's ready to
- 40:37Speaker 4: go because I emailed Frank. He goes, yeah, I'm working out,
- 40:39Speaker 4: but I could jump on with Barclay. And it happened
- 40:41Speaker 4: in a matter of seconds. So it was a good
- 40:42Speaker 4: job by Todd, a good job by everybody.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Yeah, that was really fun. What a great overall interview.
- 40:46Speaker 3: All right, Paul, let's go to the NFL play of
- 40:49Speaker 3: the week. Now, we did college earlier. The NFL is
- 40:52Speaker 3: a little trickier because we have Josh Allen right now
- 40:56Speaker 3: at the top of the heap with his incredible backward
- 40:59Speaker 3: shuttle pass. Let's see. Do we have a video of
- 41:02Speaker 3: the Josh Allen?
- 41:04Speaker 4: Yeah, the little push-push pass there that he does. This
- 41:07Speaker 4: is an all-timer.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Yeah, this is going to go on Josh Allen's all-time
- 41:11Speaker 3: highlight reel.
- 41:12Speaker 4: He made like eight guys miss and then found the
- 41:14Speaker 4: open man with no problem.
- 41:15Speaker 3: Okay, so this week we have some competition coming out
- 41:19Speaker 3: of a losing effort. Ramondre Stevenson of the Patriots against
- 41:24Speaker 3: the Bears on Thursday Night Football. No time left in
- 41:27Speaker 3: the half. Where are the tacklers?
- 41:28Speaker 4: Okay, now this should be the worst play of the
- 41:31Speaker 4: NFL season. A whole different category. It looked like the
- 41:33Speaker 4: Bears defenders were allergic to Ramondre Stevenson.
- 41:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:36Speaker 4: Or like Like he was a thing of bees and
- 41:37Speaker 4: they're running away from him.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Right, and where, I don't understand, number 30 comes in
- 41:41Speaker 3: from off the left side of the screen. What was
- 41:44Speaker 3: he doing the entire time? That was crazy.
- 41:47Speaker 4: I can't give it to Ramondre, no offense.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Because they lost.
- 41:49Speaker 4: Because they lost, but more so that he didn't do
- 41:51Speaker 4: a ton. They just were so inept in the defensive end.
- 41:54Speaker 4: So it's Josh Allen for another week.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I have a feeling Josh Allen might stay
- 41:57Speaker 3: there for a while.
- 41:58Speaker 4: Yeah, he sure could. All right, and coming up this weekend, oh,
- 42:00Speaker 4: this is going to be saucy. Sunday night is a
- 42:02Speaker 4: statement night in D.C. as the Eagles and Commanders collide.
- 42:05Speaker 4: This is last call. Pivotal NFC East showdown with Division
- 42:09Speaker 4: still up for grabs. Sunday Night Football, NBC, and Peacock.
- 42:12Speaker 4: These two teams, one of them is going home and
- 42:15Speaker 4: done done.
- 42:16Speaker 3: Yeah, no, this is going to be a great game.
- 42:18Speaker 3: I don't know about done done. We do done done
- 42:20Speaker 3: every Tuesday here.
- 42:22Speaker 4: These two teams, one of them has a little bit
- 42:24Speaker 4: of life. The other one's going home.
- 42:25Speaker 3: All right, we'll see. Must watch.
- 42:26Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, constructive criticism. And, oh, this
- 42:29Speaker 4: is great, questions from the back room. Tune in next
- 42:32Speaker 4: for that. Paps and Perloff, stick around. Not so fast.
- 42:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Ramondre Stevenson, that was a great play.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Yeah, he was just running and realized, hey, no one
- 42:41Speaker 4: wants to tackle me. I'll just keep running.
- 42:43Speaker 3: I know. The Bears had lost that game.
- 42:45Speaker 4: That would have been a worse play this season.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Welcome back to Not So Fast, Andrew Perloff, Paul Paps.
- 42:51Speaker 3: All right, Paul, it's one of your favorite times of
- 42:53Speaker 3: the week.
- 42:53Speaker 4: Questions from the back room.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 42:56Speaker 4: Our boy Danny Gardella, here we go.
- 42:58Speaker 3: All right, Danny G, hit us up. What do you got?
- 43:01Speaker 6: Yeah, we got a couple of real think pieces. Thinker pieces?
- 43:04Speaker 6: Think pieces?
- 43:04Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 43:05Speaker 6: So I've been going easy on you guys. So today
- 43:07Speaker 6: we're holding no punches back. So baseball postseason, we've been
- 43:11Speaker 6: seeing a lot of great action. If you were to
- 43:14Speaker 6: pick a walk-up song, which one would you be going with?
- 43:18Speaker 6: And I have a story at the end of this one.
- 43:20Speaker 4: All right, who would like to go first? Andrew, do
- 43:21Speaker 4: you have one or do you want me to go first?
- 43:22Speaker 3: Well, I always used to joke on the Dan Patrick
- 43:24Speaker 3: Show that it would be Christopher Cross' Sailing just to
- 43:26Speaker 3: get everybody off balance. Yeah.
- 43:29Speaker 4: Really soft, not intimidating whatsoever, and then you just park one.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I actually played Enter Sandman for my daughter the
- 43:34Speaker 3: other day. It explained how intimidating it was. If that
- 43:37Speaker 3: hadn't already been taken, that would have been my song
- 43:39Speaker 3: because it's amazing. I don't have one as cool as that,
- 43:42Speaker 3: and I probably don't merit Enter Sandman.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Yeah, if I had power to go deep all around
- 43:47Speaker 4: the ballpark, I would go Working Man by Rush. And
- 43:49Speaker 4: I probably hit 75 homers a year.
- 43:51Speaker 6: Yeah, so a quick story. When I was 19, I
- 43:53Speaker 6: interned for a summer college baseball team. I got one
- 43:56Speaker 6: at bat. I wasn't on the team, but they gave
- 43:58Speaker 6: me an at bat. I went with Rocky. You know,
- 44:01Speaker 6: it kind of pumps up the crowd a little bit.
- 44:03Speaker 6: I struck out on six pitches.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Which Rocky?
- 44:06Speaker 4: One, two, three, four, five? Which theme song from Rocky?
- 44:09Speaker 6: The most popular one. I'm showing my lack of knowledge.
- 44:11Speaker 4: Eye of the Tiger? What are we doing here?
- 44:14Speaker 6: It was very last minute, beside the point.
- 44:17Speaker 3: I think he means like... There you go.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Rocky up the thing.
- 44:21Speaker 3: No offense, Dan, but you at bat does not merit
- 44:24Speaker 3: the Rocky theme.
- 44:25Speaker 4: You could lay down a bunt with the.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Best of them.
- 44:27Speaker 6: I thought my frame would probably give that away enough,
- 44:29Speaker 6: but in case people couldn't tell, they went with the
- 44:31Speaker 6: song with that, too. All right, let's move gears. We're
- 44:33Speaker 6: going to the NBA now. Season just started. If you
- 44:37Speaker 6: could put yourself in a game, I'll give you 20 minutes.
- 44:41Speaker 6: What is your stat line? Give me a rough prediction.
- 44:44Speaker 4: Oh, well, Angie, you play basketball.
- 44:46Speaker 3: You go first. Okay, I'm getting three points. I'm going
- 44:49Speaker 3: to take four three-pointers because they're obviously going to leave
- 44:52Speaker 3: me wide open. No one's going to cover me. I'm
- 44:54Speaker 3: just going to be standing there, and I hit about 25%
- 44:57Speaker 3: of my three-pointers. We can do it out in the
- 44:59Speaker 3: field house right now. I can hit an NBA three,
- 45:01Speaker 3: so I get three points. I'm going nowhere near the paint.
- 45:04Speaker 3: I don't need Wemby throwing the ball 50 yards out
- 45:06Speaker 3: of my hand.
- 45:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going to have no stats whatsoever. I'm going
- 45:09Speaker 4: to set a lot of picks.
- 45:10Speaker 3: You're not going to set a pick against an NBA player.
- 45:12Speaker 3: I'll try to. You'd be in the emergency room if
- 45:14Speaker 3: you set one pick on... an NBA-sized player.
- 45:17Speaker 4: I may take a charge. If it's Chet Holmgren, I'll
- 45:19Speaker 4: run him over. But I would say that.
- 45:21Speaker 3: That's about it.
- 45:22Speaker 4: I probably won't get any stats, but if you lose
- 45:24Speaker 4: your dribble, I can get it right back to you.
- 45:26Speaker 4: I'm a good team player. Good on the bench.
- 45:27Speaker 6: Yeah, there's a very inspirational quote by Dion Waiters. He said,
- 45:30Speaker 6: I'd rather shoot 0 for 30 than 0 for 9
- 45:32Speaker 6: because 0 for 9 means you stop shooting. So I
- 45:34Speaker 6: would probably do that until they finally say, enough shooting,
- 45:37Speaker 6: get back on the bench.
- 45:38Speaker 1: All right, last one.
- 45:39Speaker 6: This one may need a little bit more time to
- 45:41Speaker 6: think about this one. What sports conspiracy theory Do you
- 45:47Speaker 6: believe the most?
- 45:48Speaker 4: Oh, gosh.
- 45:50Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you a question, Dan. The frozen envelope,
- 45:53Speaker 3: that's kind of a fact at this point. The Patrick
- 45:55Speaker 3: Ewing draft. Is that even a conspiracy theory? Of course
- 45:58Speaker 3: the envelope was frozen.
- 45:59Speaker 6: Yeah, that one I think is, you can call it
- 46:01Speaker 6: a conspiracy theory, but at this point it's so proven.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Okay, I'll stay with NBA. I think the lottery that
- 46:08Speaker 3: gave Cooper Flagg to the Mavs most recently, I think
- 46:11Speaker 3: that was fishy.
- 46:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going to go back to the Knicks. I
- 46:16Speaker 4: don't really believe in conspiracies almost ever in sports. However,
- 46:19Speaker 4: if I were running the league, and if you knew
- 46:22Speaker 4: how big Patrick Ewing literally and figuratively was in the mid-' 80s,
- 46:25Speaker 4: I would have done anything I could to get him
- 46:27Speaker 4: to New York City. And if all it takes is
- 46:29Speaker 4: putting an envelope in the freezer for an hour and
- 46:30Speaker 4: a half, sign me up. I would have done the
- 46:32Speaker 4: same thing.
- 46:33Speaker 6: I've got not-so-fast-branded tinfoil hats coming in the mail, so
- 46:35Speaker 6: we can spend a little bit more time on that
- 46:36Speaker 6: when they get here.
- 46:38Speaker 4: Good questions, Danny.
- 46:39Speaker 3: Thank you, buddy.
- 46:39Speaker 6: Thanks, guys.
- 46:40Speaker 4: Nice job out of them. Questions for the back room
- 46:43Speaker 4: every week here on Not So Fast. Perloff, let's get
- 46:45Speaker 4: right to it. Your questions on Twitter. Constructive criticism time, Perloff.
- 46:49Speaker 4: Here we go. This is for feedback.
- 46:52Speaker 3: Okay.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Possibly about your shirt, maybe about my hair. Here we go.
- 46:54Speaker 4: First question. I watch every day at noon and love it.
- 46:58Speaker 4: You know, this is straight pandering by our production staff.
- 47:01Speaker 4: If you compliment the show, you're making air.
- 47:03Speaker 3: That's not really a question, but I absolutely love this tweet.
- 47:06Speaker 4: Yeah, like where your head's at, Mike Villette. All right,
- 47:07Speaker 4: next one. Here we go, Perloff. Will NFL ever make
- 47:11Speaker 4: officials job full-time? No, it's too expensive. I don't think
- 47:16Speaker 4: they should pay them that much. They should have side jobs.
- 47:18Speaker 4: They have full-time jobs, these guys. Paying them more and
- 47:21Speaker 4: making them full-time will not make the refereeing any better.
- 47:24Speaker 3: I think even if they offered them, the officials would
- 47:26Speaker 3: still work a second job. Because otherwise, what are they
- 47:28Speaker 3: going to do? Just sit around from February until September?
- 47:31Speaker 4: Yeah, watch tape. I mean, I would take that job.
- 47:32Speaker 4: You and I would take that job. All right, one more, Pearl.
- 47:34Speaker 4: Here we go. What old-timey tradition would you like to
- 47:38Speaker 4: see make a comeback? Ryan Organ, is this like life
- 47:41Speaker 4: or is it sports? Where are we going here?
- 47:42Speaker 3: I'm going to take it sports. I like those old
- 47:44Speaker 3: black and white photos where everyone's wearing a suit to
- 47:47Speaker 3: the baseball game. Like a wool suit.
- 47:49Speaker 4: In summer.
- 47:50Speaker 3: A top hat. Yeah, I think suits to a baseball game.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Maybe just a one-off. I don't know if anyone even
- 47:55Speaker 3: has ties anymore. So I'd love to see that for
- 47:58Speaker 3: the visual.
- 47:59Speaker 4: Now we'd have a rise in heat stroke by fans,
- 48:01Speaker 4: but you would be in favor.
- 48:02Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe do it at an indoor park if you
- 48:04Speaker 3: have to. But come on, that was classy.
- 48:06Speaker 4: You know, I would say my tradition. How about wiffle ball?
- 48:09Speaker 4: More wiffle ball. I think it is making a comeback.
- 48:12Speaker 4: More kids playing wiffle ball outside. I want to see
- 48:14Speaker 4: more of that. It's an all-American game.
- 48:16Speaker 3: Is that old-timey, though? I feel like stickball is old-timey.
- 48:19Speaker 3: Maybe we should bring back stickball.
- 48:20Speaker 4: I never played stickball growing up. It was all wiffle.
- 48:22Speaker 4: We didn't have walls to hit off of where I
- 48:24Speaker 4: grew up.
- 48:24Speaker 3: Right, right, right, right. But if you're talking old-timey, in Brooklyn,
- 48:27Speaker 3: like me, they played stickball.
- 48:28Speaker 4: It's time for the feel-good here before we get you
- 48:30Speaker 4: out of here. The New England Patriots. Halloween coming up.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Look at the fellas going to the local kids' hospital.
- 48:37Speaker 4: All dressed up. They went all out.
- 48:41Speaker 3: That's pretty good. But I don't know. Are they making
- 48:43Speaker 3: it about themselves here? What's going on?
- 48:45Speaker 4: No, no. They matched with one of the kids.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Oh.
- 48:49Speaker 3: All right. That is pretty cool. Good for those kids.
- 48:53Speaker 4: Getting autographs, getting pictures, and some good uniforms. Some big
- 48:56Speaker 4: dudes in those outfits.
- 48:58Speaker 3: You know, it brings up sort of a tough topic.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Are we dressing up?
- 49:03Speaker 4: For Halloween?
- 49:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:04Speaker 4: We'll talk about that in our meeting. All right, who
- 49:06Speaker 4: you got tonight? Brewers, Rays, what do you got?
- 49:08Speaker 3: I think it's over tonight. What do you got?
- 49:10Speaker 4: I'm going Brewers 7-1, and they get ready for their parade.
- 49:13Speaker 4: All right, that's it for Not So Fast. Tune in
- 49:15Speaker 4: tomorrow morning right here on NBC Sports Now, Dan Patrick Show,
- 49:18Speaker 4: 9 to noon Eastern. Then come hang with us. Enjoy
- 49:20Speaker 4: the baseball tonight. Good luck to both teams.
