- 0:02Good evening, everybody. Welcome to targeting Winners.
- 0:06Offseason has begun. We are this is the Coaching
- 0:09carousel episode. And today we are joined once
- 0:13again by the great Mark from out here at coach's hot seat in
- 0:17sunny California. How you doing today Mark?
- 0:20Great. Thanks for having me.
- 0:23Nice Darren, still cold up there.
- 0:27Yesterday we broke a 20 day streak of not having our high
- 0:31temperature reach freezing. We hit like 35 yesterday so the
- 0:35streak is over. Yeah, it's supposed to be like
- 0:3940 next week, so shorts and T-shirt weather upcoming so.
- 0:42There we go, and Pete sunny Mexico.
- 0:47Today 86° in sunny Mexico so all is good down here.
- 0:52Excited to be here with all ya. I believe winter is over down
- 0:56here in Florida as well. I think it was like it's in the
- 0:5870s today. So enough making fun of Darren
- 1:02because I know it's going to be making fun of me in Florida
- 1:04State. The coaches, coaches hiring up.
- 1:09I don't know, Mark, before we get going, how would you
- 1:11describe the offseason, the coaching carousel from 2025
- 1:16compared to other years in recent history here?
- 1:20It's been chaotic a really, you know, very active and a lot, you
- 1:28know, a lot of surprises, I think.
- 1:33Yeah. Like 3333 changes in all couple
- 1:37years ago there were 32. We haven't come anywhere close
- 1:40to those two numbers in a long, long time.
- 1:42And you know the reasons like, you know, coach leaving for a
- 1:46conference rival towards the end of the regular season besides
- 1:51poor performance. And what, 1 Coach gets fired for
- 1:53not only keeping alcohol in his desk but actually drinking it on
- 1:55the job supposedly. And everybody's favorite a, a
- 2:00coach heading over to a staffer's apartment and
- 2:02threatening them with silverware.
- 2:04So, I mean, the reasons are vast.
- 2:08But yeah, 33 is, is just insane. Tim, are you emotionally set to
- 2:15get into Mark's rankings? Well, we're going to be, I'm
- 2:20sure, top of the list and something this year.
- 2:22Yeah, I'm ready for it. I'm not drinking today.
- 2:25Say one thing before Mark gets going and depresses Tim.
- 2:29There are multiple links in the description of the live stream
- 2:32tonight. 1 is to coacheshotseat.com, Mark's
- 2:34website. Sign up, it's free.
- 2:37He's he's doing a series right now, I believe of his thoughts
- 2:40on all the new coaching hires. So sign up for that.
- 2:43Not only can you get caught up by going back to his blog, but
- 2:45you'll get his weekly emails on that also.
- 2:48He's got a podcast out, I think, what, two or three, three
- 2:51episodes so far out there so far.
- 2:53Yeah. And we've got 2 links there, one
- 2:56if you listen on Spotify, one if you listen on Apple, Last week's
- 3:01pretty interesting. How important is December in
- 3:04determining these coaches future?
- 3:06So an interesting listen there. So all right, Mark, we've had
- 3:09John multiple times. We always appreciate you making
- 3:11time for us. And now as an added bonus for
- 3:15Pete and myself, you get to start Tim off in February.
- 3:23Potential mental breakdown. So please mark your rankings.
- 3:27End of the seat. Who's got the hottest seat in
- 3:29America and why? Well, you know, Tim, I'm sorry,
- 3:34but it's Mike Norvell at Florida State.
- 3:39Yeah, just. And it does just does not look
- 3:42to be getting any better. You know, you kind of hope in
- 3:45the in the offseason, particularly in this era, that
- 3:48it would get better. And the way it started out was
- 3:50with Gus Malzahn, the offensive coordinator, retiring very
- 3:55suddenly. And so it appears that Mike
- 3:58Norvell will will be back calling plays next year.
- 4:02He had one, one year off. This is just not a good
- 4:07situation. The, you know, the the, the
- 4:10boosters are upset and probably rightfully so.
- 4:16They were, you know, they were, they, they gave input into the
- 4:20stadium reconfiguration and upgrade and that was ignored.
- 4:26They gave input on the coach and that was ignored.
- 4:29And so they've stopped writing checks.
- 4:32And so now if you're trying to buy out and Norvelt's got a
- 4:35pretty sizable buy out, you really can't do it.
- 4:38So you're sort of stuck with them for a while and stuck with
- 4:42the athletic director for a while.
- 4:44So the guy who created the mess will be there and the guy who is
- 4:48executing the mess will be there for the foreseeable future.
- 4:53It just isn't clicking at, you know, I did.
- 4:58He went heavily into the portal one year and was very successful
- 5:02with it. You know, that was the year that
- 5:04they were bumped out of the playoffs.
- 5:07And since then it's just all falling apart.
- 5:10It is considered, it's Norel's continued to rely on the portal
- 5:14pretty heavily. What you lose when you're doing
- 5:17that is you lose the culture. You know, these guys are coming
- 5:20in and they're not Seminoles. They don't, they don't, they
- 5:24don't know about this and they don't know about the spear.
- 5:26And there's a horse galloping around the stadium.
- 5:28Why? And why are people making that
- 5:31noise? They're they're, they're really
- 5:33just not into it. They're hired hands and they
- 5:36don't really care. And that doesn't seem to be
- 5:40something that the coaching staff is focused on.
- 5:43They are focused on. They did recognize that there
- 5:45were cultural issues and they were focused on, you know, we're
- 5:48A-Team and we got to play together.
- 5:50But they missed the part about the school.
- 5:52And with a really rich culture that Florida State has, that's a
- 5:56big mess. Yeah, I thought I saw, I, I,
- 6:00I've turned a lot of the, the YouTube channels and the, the
- 6:04Twitter accounts off, right, Because it's just been so
- 6:07negative. I didn't want to deal with it,
- 6:08but I thought they did hire a general manager.
- 6:12They did. I mean, you think that'll help?
- 6:14I mean, I mean, to take as much out of it, of it out of the
- 6:18hands of the athletic director, I think is a good idea.
- 6:21Yeah, I, I think most of the general managers are, are
- 6:24working on talent evaluation and you're working with the players
- 6:28to make sure that they stick around after they're, you know,
- 6:30after the, after the one year that they've got an nil.
- 6:33So we'll see what that does that that that could help.
- 6:37But I, you know, I just, it just seems to be, they just don't
- 6:42seem to be connecting on a, you know, on a really disturbing
- 6:45level. Like it just isn't, it just
- 6:47isn't, it just isn't happening. And Norvell seems to be lost as
- 6:52to what to do. He doesn't seem to know.
- 6:55So I think this is probably too big of a job for him.
- 6:59He probably needs to go back to the, you know, the type of
- 7:03school that he came from and, and he was successful at
- 7:07Memphis, He was successful at other places, but this, this is
- 7:11too big of a stage, I think. Well, at least they'll have the
- 7:15same offensive coordinator as last year, so that.
- 7:17Oh, wait, no. Oh, he retired.
- 7:19Yeah. Great.
- 7:20Lovely. At the last minute.
- 7:24Yeah, what's he probably just saw the running on the wall
- 7:27maybe. I don't think he liked the
- 7:28quarterback. I don't I don't like the
- 7:29quarterback they got either. I mean, I would just like to
- 7:32they have some kid on the bench. I have to forget his name, but
- 7:35obviously, but all the the players or the the fans or
- 7:40whatever seem to like this kid Searcy I think his name is, or
- 7:45Seeley #11 I believe is his number one.
- 7:48So Darren, you can look that up for me.
- 7:49I'm. Not looking that up.
- 7:51For you, I'm not looking that up either.
- 7:52I'm I've totally detached from FSU for the last couple of
- 7:55months, but I like to see them recruit a guy and give them the
- 8:02give them the reins, recruit them coach them because I mean
- 8:05he he can coach. I mean, he's not like he's
- 8:07totally brain dead out there. I mean, yeah.
- 8:12No, he's good. He's good with X's and O's, you
- 8:15know, and, and it's a lot to ask somebody to call the plays in to
- 8:19be the head coach. And a lot of the newer guys like
- 8:21to do that. And it just doesn't work
- 8:23because, you know, you need somebody to sort of be, you
- 8:25know, managing the whole game. And when they're calling the
- 8:28plays, they, they tend to focus on one side of the ball.
- 8:32They don't focus on both and, and you see it over and over and
- 8:36over again there. There's the very rare exception
- 8:39to that. So, you know, I, I, I don't
- 8:44know, I think Gus Malzahn was burned out anyway.
- 8:47And when he saw what he had, I don't think he saw he didn't
- 8:50have exactly what he wanted. And he just thought, I, you
- 8:52know, I don't want to keep pushing a boulder, a pill.
- 8:54I'm 60 something years old and I I can go play with my
- 8:58grandchildren. Right, they might block better
- 9:03than Florida State, who knows? So, Well, before it gets too
- 9:08depressing, let's just move on to some, you know, something
- 9:13else before I start to cry here, Darren, you got something you
- 9:15want to ask Mark? Well, I I was going to let Pete
- 9:18bring up a coach #2 on Mark's rankings.
- 9:20But before we go into that, little breaking news just came
- 9:23by on the phone. Trinidad Chambliss will be
- 9:26allowed to play in 2026. So just your love or hate for
- 9:31Ole Miss accordingly, that just came down a couple minutes ago.
- 9:33So he won his day in court. He will be the Ole Miss starting
- 9:36quarterback in 2026. He.
- 9:41Well, I think Mark, I think your next team that you're looking at
- 9:43is Baylor. If I'm incorrect toy is that is
- 9:45that accurate? That's correct.
- 9:48Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:52Let's look into that. Item number 2 is Dave Aranda at
- 9:55Baylor. Dave, really, he got sort of a
- 9:58reprieve when his boss got fired.
- 10:02And so, yeah, because I think he would have been gone last year.
- 10:07And you know, this this is another situation that just
- 10:10doesn't look to be getting any better, unfortunately.
- 10:14I, I think Dave Aranda is a, a really good defensive
- 10:18coordinator, but that the head coaching position is just not
- 10:22translating. So he got a reprieve for one
- 10:25more year. I think they're already having
- 10:28back channel conversations with, with some, with other coaches to
- 10:33see who might be able to, to step into Baylor.
- 10:39And you know, there are some, there is one big name that is
- 10:43looking at that job right now. So we'll, we'll see what happens
- 10:49during the year and, and I, I would expect that that one will
- 10:52open up. Yeah, I agree.
- 10:57I actually have him as my number one.
- 10:58I mean, I think, you know, for him, I think where he is, I
- 11:01think it's challenging that that team seems to be regressing.
- 11:04It's just not, it's not doing what I think that team is
- 11:08capable of, of, of, of doing and it it just does not seem to be
- 11:11pressing the right, the right direction.
- 11:13So I agree with that. I think he would have been gone
- 11:16before this year and I I do not think he'll survive the season
- 11:19this year, but we'll we'll see. We'll see how that goes.
- 11:21But if it does not start well, I don't think it's going to make
- 11:24it halfway through the season. Yeah, I.
- 11:27Absolutely agree. I was looking at list 3 through
- 11:305. Pete just talking about guys who
- 11:32don't think is five of the year. I'm surprised all three of these
- 11:34guys survived 2025. But let's start with #3 Mike
- 11:39Locksley of the Maryland Terrapins.
- 11:41How did this guy not lose his job last season?
- 11:46I, you know, it comes down to money and I don't think they had
- 11:49the money to buy him out. And so they decided that, you
- 11:54know, the, the devil you know is better than the one that you
- 11:57don't know. And so they're investing the
- 12:00money that they do have into the program.
- 12:03And we'll see. There's a couple of these that
- 12:04are doing that, a couple, a couple of the, the coaches that
- 12:08are in trouble are are, you know, the programs have said
- 12:12we're going to invest in the we're going to invest in the
- 12:14players, we'll invest in the NIL and we'll, we'll see what
- 12:17happens. So that this is the first one of
- 12:20those where we're we're seeing that and we'll have to wait for
- 12:24the season to start. I I don't I don't see anything
- 12:28great happening here either. Now with with with Mike and then
- 12:33so Mike's number 2 on my list, the big tennis where I focus a
- 12:35lot of my efforts through the year.
- 12:37It feels like they've completely plateaued it.
- 12:40It seems like wash, rinse, repeat.
- 12:42It's the same thing over and over again.
- 12:45Seven and five. It doesn't matter.
- 12:47They have skilled players and it does not seem to matter.
- 12:51It's the same result over and over again.
- 12:54He can't get them over the hill. Nothing changes.
- 12:58Signature wins do not exist and it just doesn't feel like it's
- 13:02going to change. So I don't know where that
- 13:04program goes with him and I, I think they're frustrated with
- 13:08him, but I agree. I, I think it's a money thing
- 13:11right now and I think they need to figure out what they're going
- 13:14to do with, with Mike, but I don't think that program can
- 13:17move forward with, with him. So something's got to happen.
- 13:23Do you want to stay on the Big 10 or do you want to move to a
- 13:25different different conference boys, how do you want to go
- 13:27let's. Let's look at #4 because after
- 13:31this, not going to have meltdown against Texas A and MI saw this
- 13:34guy was going to be gone Sunday morning.
- 13:36But I have a feeling there's 25,000,000 reasons why he's
- 13:40still getting another shot this year.
- 13:42Shane Beamer, South Carolina. How much trouble was he in after
- 13:46that A&M meltdown? About 30 to 3:00 at halftime and
- 13:50then losing 31 to 30 or something like that, I mean.
- 13:55He was, he was, he was. I saw him interviewed, you know,
- 14:01going into the locker room and, you know, the, he was, he was
- 14:05roostering there a little bit about how well they were doing.
- 14:07And then the next thing you do, it just collapsed.
- 14:12So, you know, I, I know South Carolina fans are, are
- 14:15frustrated with Shane. You know, I think one of his big
- 14:21mistakes was the hiring of Mr. Shula and he, he, you know, he
- 14:28let him go. And I, I think that that, you
- 14:31know, he may have justified staying another year because he
- 14:35recognized he had made a mistake and he let him go.
- 14:37But, you know, he goes through assistance and coordinators
- 14:43pretty quickly. So I don't know that it's that
- 14:45great of a place to work under him.
- 14:49You know, it just seems like the, IT just seems like there's
- 14:53always a change at defensive coordinator and, you know,
- 14:57defensive line coach and, you know all, you know, big
- 15:00turnovers of assistance every single year.
- 15:03So we'll have to, you know, we'll have to see.
- 15:07He was somebody who'd not, you know, not never been a head
- 15:09coach before, not really been a coordinator before.
- 15:11So it was a big leap for him to take on this job.
- 15:15And it looked good. One year so far.
- 15:22Yeah, the problem for Shane, right?
- 15:23I mean, sure, the SEC is tough, but we have seen South Carolina
- 15:27be competitive in the FCC and and they can be.
- 15:31So the fact that they're not right is is just damning on him.
- 15:36And the fact that he's turning through coordinators, there's no
- 15:40consistency. I mean, that that clearly points
- 15:43to him. And you've seen teams like Texas
- 15:44and Oklahoma, you know, kind of fully embed themselves in the
- 15:47league. And South Carolina seems to be
- 15:49drifting away, right? And that's that's an issue.
- 15:53That's certainly an issue for, you know, obviously the program
- 15:56as a whole. So I mean, clearly something
- 15:58needs to be done. He's a guy.
- 15:59I cannot, I cannot imagine him surviving this year.
- 16:03I don't know what he could. Do to that, no, I I don't, I
- 16:08don't. That was my, just as an aside,
- 16:11that was my first SEC game was a South Carolina home game.
- 16:17And so I, you know, a little affinity for them because of
- 16:20that. And you know, it's sad to see.
- 16:25It is, it is, I mean, Speaking of sad to see.
- 16:26So we'll shift back to the Big 10 because this is this is
- 16:29somebody I've been beating up now for a.
- 16:32Couple. Years ever since you've been on
- 16:34the show. In a team that I just, I mean,
- 16:37Wisconsin, right? This is a team that has a very
- 16:41strong historical record of how they play and, and, and just
- 16:46their whole culture and, and, and Luke came in and just
- 16:51basically set it on fire and threw it in the dumpster.
- 16:55And I don't know what he's doing there, but that is not Wisconsin
- 16:59football and it is not working. And I have absolutely no idea
- 17:03how he's still there other than money.
- 17:05And I mean, that's got to change because that is that that they
- 17:09are he has done a horrible job just decimating a program that
- 17:15has been historically strong program in the big town.
- 17:20You know, it's, it's funny when you look at the assistants and
- 17:24you look at the because I think the assistants have a lot of say
- 17:29over whether the coach does well or not the program does well or
- 17:32not well. His assistants from Cincinnati
- 17:35are mostly at Notre Dame. They're not at Wisconsin.
- 17:39They didn't come with him. They went to they went with
- 17:41Marcus within his, his DC at Cincinnati.
- 17:46And so he started over. He started with Alex Grinch and
- 17:50I, you know, on his staff and I that was a bad sign right there.
- 17:55And it just like you said, it's just never the culture is not
- 17:59the Wisconsin culture. It's not the Wisconsin program.
- 18:03This is a program that has said we're going to invest in the
- 18:05program. So we'll see what that produces,
- 18:08but I, I think that seat could be really hot if they've
- 18:11invested in the program and nothing changes.
- 18:14And I don't think anything's going to change.
- 18:16I, yeah, I don't, yeah. Unless, unless they they it
- 18:22would have to be a complete 180 for Luke.
- 18:27You think they could go trade maybe Florida State nor avail
- 18:30for fickle and do a? There you go.
- 18:32Change a scenery trade. Maybe that's all they need, a
- 18:34change of scenery. It could not hurt, honestly.
- 18:42I just don't get like Mark had mentioned a couple times, you
- 18:44hear all these programs that say, oh, we're keeping our
- 18:46coach, we're going to invest more money in the program.
- 18:48So my first question is why didn't you just invest more
- 18:50money in the program, you know, along with hiring this coach and
- 18:55then you would save yourself the embarrassment from from hiring
- 18:58this guy. But you know, one of the things
- 19:00we talked about, Tim, I'm, I'm going to ask one question and I
- 19:03think you're, you're emotionally recovered from the start of the
- 19:05show and then I'll let you go. But I got, I got some questions
- 19:07from the mailbox. So one of the things I think as
- 19:11fans we all hear about is these insane buyout amounts.
- 19:13James Franklin, 49 million Jimbo Fisher, 75,000,000 How do these
- 19:19numbers even come to be? I mean, I can get let the
- 19:22coaches and their agents love these numbers, but what, what's
- 19:25the what's the reasoning behind this?
- 19:28Because it just seems ridiculous like you could be doing so many
- 19:31other things with that money. How do these numbers even come
- 19:33about? Well, you really have you have
- 19:36one agent who's controlling a lot of the a lot of these
- 19:39coaches and he has he has leverage and he uses that
- 19:43leverage to his advantage to negotiate some some of these
- 19:48ridiculous contracts. Yeah.
- 19:50And some of them, you know, the athletic directors are just, you
- 19:54know, rolling over. There's a couple places where
- 19:57the a DS are rolling over. This really started, you know,
- 20:00it goes back to the tarmac ING this at this level.
- 20:05Mike Bone a couple years ago was charged with hiring a football
- 20:10coach at USC. And the what he heard over and
- 20:13over again was you fired a guy on the tarmac.
- 20:17Why would I want to go there? And so that was used as leverage
- 20:21to start the insane buyouts. And since that contract with
- 20:25that buyout, they've gone nowhere but up.
- 20:31So we know who to blame. So.
- 20:35Yes. I mean, yeah, it is hard to feel
- 20:40even if these coaches do get fired, it is hard to feel bad
- 20:42for them because they still keep getting paid.
- 20:44I mean, if I ever get fired, I'm I'm not getting any more checks.
- 20:48If we can go back to the Big 10 for a second.
- 20:51I had a buddy at work. I guess we'll call this a phone,
- 20:53a friend question. He's a fan of Iowa and I guess
- 20:59he's tired of Kurt Ferentz. He would like to know how much
- 21:01longer do you see him staying there and is he going to leave
- 21:05anytime soon? I guess he wants them gone for
- 21:08some reason so. Yeah, that's an interesting 1.
- 21:11So I, you know, I've heard like for the last few years that this
- 21:15was going to be his last year. And now it's sort of laughable.
- 21:18You hear, you know, it's going to be his last year and I, you
- 21:21know, I don't believe it. Now.
- 21:23I think at some point somebody's going to have to pull him aside
- 21:26and say, look, we're, we, we haven't, you know, a nice cushy
- 21:30office for you and the chancellor's office and you can
- 21:33go raise money and this guy's taking over and it'll probably
- 21:38be an ugly and, but he's made it that way.
- 21:43You know, it's, you know, there's a time to step aside.
- 21:47It's probably his, his time. And they can let him go out on,
- 21:50you know, with a, a great send off and, and, you know, put a
- 21:55statue of him up and like quad and have a nice dinner for him
- 22:00and give him a gold watch and pat him on the back.
- 22:02But I, I don't think he's gonna go that way.
- 22:04I think they're going to have to push him out.
- 22:07Oh, yeah, That's what John Gruden says.
- 22:09There's two types of football coaches, those who who have been
- 22:13fired and those who haven't been fired yet.
- 22:15So Bobby Bowden was fired. I mean, he even said that to the
- 22:20end. They said they would ask him
- 22:22after you retired. He'd be like, no, I did not
- 22:24retire, I was fired. So, you know, he said that.
- 22:26So if he can get fired, anybody can get fired.
- 22:29So yeah, all these guys are getting fired eventually, except
- 22:32for Nick Saban. He'll just leave.
- 22:34But I guess he'd be the exception.
- 22:37He he left at the right time. It was.
- 22:39That was it. He did.
- 22:41Well. It's got to do with the nil
- 22:42stuff. He was like, I'm out, yeah.
- 22:45This is not. You can't just, you know, do the
- 22:47whole go to school, get grades and be ready for the NFL stuff
- 22:51anymore. And now they want all the money.
- 22:52So that's level the playing field, if you will.
- 22:56So Darren, you got another one coming up?
- 22:59I asked one. Pete's got a couple that that
- 23:01he's got lined up. I do, yeah.
- 23:03Let me circle back to the Big 10 for a minute.
- 23:04So I'm a Wolverine. So I mean, the Willingham hire
- 23:08is really interesting to me. I, I personally, I think it's a
- 23:10really good one. I think he's a culture guy.
- 23:12I think he's a repair the damage guy.
- 23:15So I think for me, I, I don't think there's a lot of debate
- 23:18over that one. I don't think he's a shoot for
- 23:20the moon guy, right? He's a fix it.
- 23:23But the one more interesting to me than the Michigan thinks, I
- 23:26think that's pretty clear what he's there to do is the Pat
- 23:29Fitzgerald hire at Michigan. To me, that is way more
- 23:33interesting of where that thing goes.
- 23:36And is he somebody who can function in this whole new NIL
- 23:41world or can he not? You know, that intrigues me
- 23:45'cause you know, I'm, I think Kyle can do just fine at
- 23:48Michigan, but I'm not sure what Pat can do at Michigan State.
- 23:53I'm really just curious about curious about your perspective
- 23:55actually on both guys, but even more so, Pat.
- 23:58So he had let me lay right down, 'cause I I actually wrote
- 24:02something down about this. He had a defensive coordinator
- 24:05when he was at Northwestern, a guy, the guy had been there
- 24:08forever. And it's really, you know, he's,
- 24:11he's a savant with the with defense.
- 24:14And the moment that guy left, Northwestern started to decline.
- 24:24And so I, you know, that's what Pat Fitzgerald's reputation and
- 24:29his and his everything he's built on was the Northwestern
- 24:32defense. Well, he had a really good
- 24:34defensive coordinator. He'd been there for, you know,
- 24:3650 years or something. And, you know, it built up the
- 24:39program, built up the Northwestern way.
- 24:41And, you know, then he had Pat there who really got to back
- 24:45that up and probably did a couple things to make it, you
- 24:48know, help him be successful, even more successful at it.
- 24:52I don't see that guy at Michigan State.
- 24:54And so my question is, who's going to, who's going to run the
- 24:59defense? Is the guy going to be as as
- 25:02good as as the, the guy that he had at, at at at Northwestern?
- 25:08Because that's that's when it fell apart.
- 25:11So you're going up to Michigan State.
- 25:13They had Mel Tucker. That was a disaster that fell
- 25:17apart. They brought in Jonathan Smith.
- 25:20And listen, if you're willing to wait, yeah, probably it would
- 25:23have taken four to five years, but Jonathan Smith would get you
- 25:26there. They preached that for two
- 25:28years. They did not have the patience.
- 25:30I preached that for two years. Give the man time, right?
- 25:34They would not do so. So yeah.
- 25:36No, they threw him out, and now you've got Pat Fitzgerald, so
- 25:41you're going to have two big buyouts and you and you and
- 25:48you've killed the you've really killed everything 'cause, you
- 25:51know, if I'm a kid and I'm in high school, do I go?
- 25:54Let me see. Mel Tucker.
- 25:55Jonathan Smith. I don't think so.
- 25:59Yeah, I don't think. I think, I think they fired a
- 26:02better coach to go to a lesser coach is my, is my opinion on
- 26:06that. And as a high school recruit, I
- 26:08would look at it that way. Like that place is just a
- 26:11cluster and do I really want to go there 'cause this guy will
- 26:14probably be out in two years too?
- 26:16Yeah, yeah, I. Completely agree.
- 26:20And also, if you're a parent of a kid who's considering a school
- 26:22in that area, I mean, yeah, he was found to have no knowledge
- 26:25of everything that was going on at Northwestern that led to his
- 26:28dismissal. And I mean, his job is to be in
- 26:31charge and know everything that's going on.
- 26:33Are you comfortable sending your child to go and pay for a guy
- 26:38who was apparently unaware of a lot of illegal things going on
- 26:42in his program? So yeah, this has got train
- 26:46wreck written all over it. I agree with you and Pete
- 26:49completely. This is not going to end well.
- 26:52Yeah, I'm not sure that program is recoverable anytime soon.
- 26:56I think there's been so much damage done there that they need
- 27:00to have complete gutting and their needs, time, time needs to
- 27:03go before that program's recoverable.
- 27:06They have money, but there's been a lot of damage done there.
- 27:11You know, the athletic director who hired Jonathan Smith was not
- 27:13the guy who fired him. And so when that athletic
- 27:15director change came in, you know, a DS seem to like to hire
- 27:19their own guy. The writing was kind of on the
- 27:21wall. But what they really needed to
- 27:23lay out was like, this is the stuff that went on with Mel
- 27:26Tucker, and this is what we're going to do to fix it.
- 27:28And this is the timeline. And nobody ever did that.
- 27:31Instead, they started talking about how Jonathan Smith didn't
- 27:34fit and he needs to go. And you know, I mean, it was, it
- 27:38was like it was the writing was on the wall from the middle of
- 27:40the first year. Like right out of the gate,
- 27:42immediately they were on that. Like how is this going to work
- 27:45right? We did have a question from a
- 27:50YouTube post. You want me to go knock that one
- 27:53out there, Darren, Should I go ahead?
- 27:55Yeah, the hardline question. Yeah, we had one from leave.
- 27:58His name is Crack Monster. You want us to know what's your
- 28:02opinion of Brian Hartline at USF and where would you rank his
- 28:06hiring in the Group of Five? So I think that's a pretty good
- 28:11hire for them. You know, he's, he's coming in
- 28:15behind somebody who's obviously very successful.
- 28:17And I would, I would give that a good.
- 28:22You know, it's always hard to say when somebody's a
- 28:25coordinator and they're going to become a head coach because you
- 28:27really don't have any, you don't have any, you know, kind of
- 28:30track record there. You can kind of look what they
- 28:33did as the coordinator and you, you kind of extrapolate from
- 28:37there. But it's different when they're
- 28:38sitting on, they're sitting in charge of the entire program.
- 28:44So I, you know, I would give him, I wouldn't start after him
- 28:49next year, you know, and I wouldn't even start on him the
- 28:53year after. If, if, if things aren't
- 28:56shooting right out of the gate, I'd give him to at least year 3
- 28:59before you assess whether that was a good hire or not.
- 29:03He's got to figure out what it means to be a head coach.
- 29:09Yeah, he pulled a lot of those. Did he pull a lot of those Ohio
- 29:12State receivers from that area of the country, South Florida,
- 29:15So. I think he did, yeah.
- 29:17At. The same point.
- 29:17He should do OK. Well, even no matter where
- 29:19they're from, he had Injigba Harrison, he had three or four
- 29:25like awesome ones and obviously the receivers that he had this
- 29:28year. So it's interesting that well,
- 29:31not interesting at all. Not surprising that someone from
- 29:33Tampa would go by the name crack monster.
- 29:35Just want to point that out. That's all the Florida Man
- 29:40stories, like 80% of them come from Tampa, OK?
- 29:44Not they're, they're the meth up here in Jacksonville.
- 29:47We're like the Waffle House. I I understand.
- 29:50But truck running with the truck nuts, that's more, more
- 29:53hillbillies up in Jacksonville, you know, alligators, Waffle
- 29:57House violence, everything else is mostly Tampa.
- 29:59So and all the pythons are down in Miami.
- 30:02That's that's where it all, most of the Florida Man stuff goes.
- 30:05So move on, Darren. I got one.
- 30:09I got one for you, Mark, actually.
- 30:11So one of my favorite whipping guys for for years has been
- 30:14James Franklin, right? James Franklin was is an
- 30:17excellent recruiter, excellent recruiter, right?
- 30:20People seem to love the play for the guy, but his tactical stuff
- 30:24on the sideline, he seems to shoot himself in the foot
- 30:28randomly at the worst time possible.
- 30:30That said, Virginia Tech hiring him is an absolute Grand Slam
- 30:36for them. I can say nothing bad about that
- 30:39hire other than to me that is an ACC changing hire.
- 30:44I'm curious about your perspective on that.
- 30:47I thought it was the best hire of the cycle, I really did.
- 30:50I thought you could not have found a better fit.
- 30:54He, if you look at the, at Frank Beamer's record, I pulled up
- 30:58Frank Beamer's record and I pulled up James Franklin's
- 31:02record, they're almost identical.
- 31:04I think Franklin has actually won a little bit more higher, a
- 31:07little bit of a higher winning percentage.
- 31:10But you know, you look at every, you look at the, the offense,
- 31:12you look at the defense, you look at it, you know, you start
- 31:14to look at the whole thing, the way that he runs, runs the
- 31:16program, he's Frank Beamer. So if you're a Virginia Tech,
- 31:21you got your guy. You, you got the perfect guy.
- 31:26Could not agree more. Yeah, I think we talked.
- 31:28About that before on the show and I think we were all in
- 31:30agreement and even that all the coaching positions hadn't been
- 31:33filled. But I thought there's no hire
- 31:35that's going to be better than this.
- 31:36I mean, he knows that area. He like he said he recruits
- 31:40great that he's super familiar with that area of the country
- 31:42and and the one knock about him, well, he can't be the top ten
- 31:46team. I don't know if anybody's looked
- 31:47at the ACC outside of Miami. We don't do that here.
- 31:51No, you guys do not do top ten in the ACC, so I see no reason
- 31:57for. I mean, I haven't looked at
- 31:58their schedule. I don't even know if Miami's on
- 32:00it. I don't think I'll look it up.
- 32:04When I looked the record against the top 10, Beamer and Franklin
- 32:10were almost identical. It was, it was really, I mean,
- 32:13it was everything. And I thought, wow, if you know,
- 32:17they love Frank Beamer for good reason, you know, he did a lot
- 32:20to them and he ran a really great program and was really
- 32:23classy. And that's James Franklin's.
- 32:26You know, really, if you're an opponent of James Franklin,
- 32:29you're you're playing against him.
- 32:30He's classy. He's you know, he's a classy
- 32:32guy. So he's, that was a really good
- 32:36hire. And, and I'll go, you know, I'll
- 32:38just do an aside on the Penn State side.
- 32:43I've been talking about shooting and.
- 32:48And they hired James Franklin. If you look at, if you peel back
- 32:53the onion and you start looking at Matt Campbell, he is James
- 32:57Franklin. So they didn't get any better.
- 33:01They hired the same guy. Yeah.
- 33:04Yeah, if he can recruit as well as James Franklin, which I'm not
- 33:07sure he can. So maybe the same guy, maybe
- 33:10slightly less. I I don't know, I'm not sure
- 33:13they got better. I just don't know what Penn
- 33:15State was thinking. I mean, you're firing Franklin
- 33:17mid season. The thought was like you've got
- 33:19somebody lined up that you want. Not only did you not have
- 33:23somebody lined up, you ran through like 8 guys before you
- 33:27finally got Matt Campbell for like 54 days from his firing to
- 33:31Matt Campbell's hiring. Just like what are, you know,
- 33:34you expect more out of Penn State.
- 33:36I'm sorry, I just have no idea what they were even thinking
- 33:40making that move but. Speaking about our.
- 33:43Our schedule's easy this year. They'll probably win 10 games
- 33:46just to, you know, make us all. We knew what we were doing.
- 33:49We're going to win 10 games. Matt Campbell.
- 33:52I'm sorry, Pete, go ahead. No, I was going to say, Speaking
- 33:55of teams that don't know what they're doing, what the heck is
- 33:57Stanford doing? Have they given up on football
- 34:01all together? What?
- 34:02What is this coaching hire? I don't understand at all what
- 34:06that team is doing. So if you take a look at Coach
- 34:10Asati tomorrow, we actually dig into that one.
- 34:13You know, Stanford's a, it's a weird animal because it, you
- 34:17know, they, they do things out of the norm and you know, this
- 34:23is definitely a higher out of the norm.
- 34:26It it could work. If it's going to work anywhere,
- 34:30it'll work at Stanford. That's let's put it that way.
- 34:33OK. Anybody else would be pretty up
- 34:37in arms about it, but you know, that's one that could actually
- 34:43work there. We'll we'll, we'll, we'll see.
- 34:48Across the Bay at Cal. That's an interesting hire.
- 34:53That's one to watch. So Tash Lapoy, he played at Cal,
- 34:57He's from the Bay Area, He went to De La Salle High School.
- 35:00He, he knows the lay of the land there for recruiting.
- 35:05If you watch the game, the, the game day, you know, when they,
- 35:11when they went to Cal, they were all, all of you know, all of the
- 35:15hosts were shocked at the turn out and the enthusiasm.
- 35:20Cal has really been a sleeping giant, and none of us know about
- 35:25it because the last time that they did anything with their
- 35:28team was over 60 years ago, 65 years ago.
- 35:32And so we don't know about it. But they have a really strong
- 35:36culture. They have a really, you know,
- 35:38enthusiastic fan base. They've got the alumni support
- 35:44as long as they think you they're serious.
- 35:46And this might be the first time they've got a chancellor who's
- 35:49an alum and knows that. They've got Ron Rivera as the
- 35:52general manager who knows that and Tosh Lapoy, who is, you
- 35:57know, defensive coordinator at Alabama and at Oregon taking
- 36:02over. That might be the out-of-the-box
- 36:05hire that could go somewhere this year.
- 36:08That would be 1 to watch. You got one Darren, I got AI,
- 36:14got a few here too. I don't know if you.
- 36:15I I the only other one that I had, you know, I know we were
- 36:19talking about SEC earlier. Am I the only one that hates the
- 36:21Arkansas hire of Silver Field? I mean, does anybody like
- 36:24understand what their thinking was?
- 36:25Because this seems like another terrible hire.
- 36:28The Arkansas people don't seem to like it much, but.
- 36:31OK, that's what I thought. I'm not an Arkansas person, but
- 36:33I was just like, you got rid of Sam Pittman for this guy.
- 36:36I, I I. He's a game manager kind of guy.
- 36:39I don't know what he's really going to do.
- 36:40There's I don't. Upside doesn't exist.
- 36:42I don't think so. I don't know.
- 36:45Right. No, Memphis was glad to see him
- 36:47go, so that should tell you a lot.
- 36:53Which of all the coaching hires we had this year, Which one do
- 36:56you think is the best overall cultural fit?
- 37:02Apparently the one that's this coach will win you a
- 37:04championship, but the one that just seems to fit like the
- 37:06community and and what the program's trying to do.
- 37:11The Lane Kiffin hire at LSU is probably the one that fits the
- 37:15best. You think of I'm in handy.
- 37:21You think of somebody with swagger who you know, talks a
- 37:25big game and you know, does all sorts of stuff that you you go,
- 37:30wow, that's Lane. And he's in a place where he can
- 37:34do it now where they would embrace it.
- 37:36So that's probably the best cultural fit.
- 37:41That fan base, it already fired up.
- 37:44They were fired up the minute that happened.
- 37:46They were already talking smack. So you're right.
- 37:49I mean, they are ready for Lane. So he does fit beautifully
- 37:53there. Yeah.
- 37:55I. Believe late September LSU at
- 37:58Ole Miss. Must see.
- 38:02I don't care what's going on that day.
- 38:05Nobody better scheduled a wedding that.
- 38:08Yeah. Not going to be there.
- 38:14Oh, my God. Yeah.
- 38:15I mean, and I got two more here. I don't know if Pete, if you
- 38:21wanted to go or Darren, you want to go.
- 38:23I'm gonna have something to go. Go ahead, Tim.
- 38:25OK, which one? Which one is the most overhyped
- 38:31that you think it's just going to fall flat?
- 38:33Well, I think Arkansas is a good, a good, a good bet for
- 38:38that. I, you know, I think, you know,
- 38:42we covered, we covered wedding ham at Michigan.
- 38:45And I, I think, you know, what we were saying about it was, you
- 38:48know, great cultural fit. He's going to put discipline in
- 38:52there. He's going to reset the culture.
- 38:55He's not going to take any crap from anyone.
- 38:58He's, you know, he's just a real no nonsense guy.
- 39:00I've always really liked him. When you dig down into the into
- 39:05the numbers, you look at his record, you know, he's not a guy
- 39:08who wins against the big teams. He'll, he's going to, he's going
- 39:11to beat, you know, the, the, the middle of the pack.
- 39:17He's going to have a good record.
- 39:18They're going to have a winning record.
- 39:20They're going to go to a nice bowl game.
- 39:22They're going to look tough, but he's going to lose against the
- 39:25top team and that's just been, that's been, but he'll reset the
- 39:30culture there and whoever comes after him is going to benefit
- 39:34from that. If if the betting line if the
- 39:38over under was three years in one game for how long
- 39:41Whittingham will be at Michigan you betting the over the under
- 39:45under? Under, I'm betting the under,
- 39:48yeah. He's keeping, he's keeping the
- 39:52seat warm for John Harbaugh. That's all that's happening
- 39:54right now. Oh yeah, they'll wait for the
- 39:56Giants to get rid of him and then he's.
- 39:59Oh, that's what's going to happen.
- 40:01So you're you're banking on the giants impatience.
- 40:05I am Good luck with that. Let me know how that works out.
- 40:08Well, you won't have to. I'm sure we'll all hear about
- 40:10it. So all right, go with my last
- 40:16one or. Yeah, I, I, I got all the ones
- 40:19from the e-mail. I I got a couple of Pete's, but
- 40:21we'll let him ask those. Well, the one higher that I hate
- 40:25the most because I think it's probably the best one and it's
- 40:29by the Florida Gators. John Sumrall.
- 40:30He would he was like my one, one of my choices to take over for
- 40:35Nobel if FSU shake Ken Nobel. I wanted Sumrall.
- 40:40Are my fears correct or do you see hopefully I'm way off base
- 40:45here or do you think I'm I nailed something?
- 40:47No, I, I think he nailed it. I think he's, and nobody's
- 40:53paying attention to them right now and they're doing all kinds
- 40:55of the right stuff. So I, that's, that's what.
- 41:00So there's a couple of them that I'm looking at.
- 41:01I'm looking at him at Florida, looking at Bob, Bob Chesney at
- 41:08UCLA. As long as the athletic director
- 41:12stays out of it. That guy is a moron.
- 41:16God bless it, I mean. How do you really feel talking
- 41:19about? Bad athletic directors and, and
- 41:22he he is, he is a bad Martin Jarman.
- 41:25He is a bad one. So, you know, it says something
- 41:29when when they put it together, a panel of alums to go make the
- 41:32hire and the athletic director's not included.
- 41:35And that's what they did. So, but Chesney is he's another
- 41:39one who's making all the right moves.
- 41:41Lapoie is also making all the right moves.
- 41:46Yeah. So those are the those are those
- 41:48are three. And along with James Franklin, I
- 41:50think that James Franklin was a really good hire for Virginia
- 41:53Tech. Would either of those three put
- 41:57their team instantly in, you know, mode for playoff or title
- 42:01contention, do you think in first year out the gate or is it
- 42:04going to take some growing pains, if you will?
- 42:08You surely I'll make noise. I don't think that they'll make
- 42:10the playoffs. He'll make noise.
- 42:13OK. Virginia Tech, there's a
- 42:18possibility there, and I think there's a possibility in
- 42:22Florida, too. Yeah, that's going to suck. 3rd
- 42:31place in Florida again. Or probably 5th place.
- 42:34Who am I kidding? OK, so the most baffling hire we
- 42:39didn't talk about, the most baffling hire to me is at Tulane
- 42:45where they promoted Will Hall, who was a disaster at Southern
- 42:50Mississippi. And all of a sudden he's the
- 42:51head coach at Tulane. And you know, and you know, I
- 42:59get emails every week and some of the I should start publishing
- 43:02some of those because they're some of them are pretty funny.
- 43:05But there are two coaches where I've gotten a boatload of emails
- 43:10from people when they were let go where they said the guy is a
- 43:14really nice guy, but it just didn't work out.
- 43:18And Will Hall was one of them. I probably had two dozen emails
- 43:22that said that from people who were really involved in that
- 43:26program. They said we wanted it to work.
- 43:27We kept extending it. So, you know, it just never got
- 43:32traction. And so when you hear that about,
- 43:35you know, like he had, he had support there till the end.
- 43:39And now he's the head coach of Tulane, I don't understand.
- 43:41That was just a lazy hire. Feel the same way about U A/B.
- 43:48I mean, you Dilfer, we thought should have never been hired in
- 43:51the 1st place as long as he did, but you fired him after he went
- 43:55two and four. You promoted the offense
- 43:56coordinator, Alex Mortensen. He went two and four and his
- 44:00offense actually was worse the last six games of the season
- 44:03than it was when he was the offense coordinator of the first
- 44:05six games of the season. So I I no idea what UAB is doing
- 44:11down there either. So I expect a terrible year for
- 44:13them as well. Well, he's a, that's another
- 44:16really bad athletic director. He's another one.
- 44:19I did, I don't get it, like, oh, you know, why is he still there?
- 44:22But I don't think anybody wanted that job.
- 44:25I think that they, what they went with was somebody who
- 44:27wanted the job, who was there and who knew, at least knew
- 44:30where the bathrooms were. But there was, they really
- 44:34couldn't attract anyone to that job.
- 44:37And it's, and they have really great fan base, really great
- 44:43alumni support. There's a lot of positives to
- 44:46that job. But if the if they had better
- 44:50management, you know, somebody, if they had a better athletic
- 44:52director and somebody who actually really cared about the
- 44:55program, then I think they would be successful.
- 45:00The resources that they have available to them from the
- 45:02alumni and from their supporters is, is, is.
- 45:06Yeah, there are a lot of schools that would like to have that.
- 45:12Yeah, well, one school we didn't talk about the the hiring back
- 45:15in the SEC, Kentucky's new coach, yes, from he came over
- 45:22from Oregon. Do you have any thoughts on that
- 45:24guy? Do you think he can move them up
- 45:25the SEC ladder in any way? I do.
- 45:28I think he I think that was a good hire for them too.
- 45:30They he's he's AI think he was a quarterback at Kentucky, but I
- 45:37must take him. He's very familiar with that
- 45:38program. He grew up in Kentucky.
- 45:40Yeah, he's he's an alum. He's a really good offensive
- 45:43coordinator. So if he can make that lead to
- 45:46head coach, that that that one could be a success.
- 45:48Nice. Yeah, I guess with Lane Kiffin
- 45:54just taking all the oxygen out of the room, when you talk about
- 45:56the SEC and all the new coaches, he kind of just takes everything
- 46:00out of there. You keep this guy.
- 46:02That guy just fell through the cracks here a little bit.
- 46:04Look, I'm just going to say just because I'm wearing a hat, I am
- 46:07some I'm I'm in the back one of the cars on the lane train.
- 46:10Not all the way like sitting up front asking to drive, but I
- 46:15mean, I could seriously. Oh, we could have a whole show
- 46:17about him. No, we can't.
- 46:18He's a douche. All right, there's a 5 second
- 46:20show, it's over with. Say what you want about the guy
- 46:22personally, but he had less at Ole Miss than what he's going to
- 46:27have here. And the dude did win 10 games a
- 46:30year the last three years. You know, the best thing he did
- 46:34was keep his defensive coordinator, Baker, and that
- 46:38defense was good last year. If Sam Levitt is healthy and
- 46:44that's, that's a big if it, it's a playoff team, man, I'm sorry.
- 46:48For sure it is. For sure it is.
- 46:49All right. No doubt.
- 46:53You know who's had experience with Lane?
- 46:55He's a really good coach, there's no question about it.
- 46:59It's whether you can handle all of the, you know, all of the
- 47:03periphery stuff that comes with him.
- 47:08My one concern is you could say the same thing about Bill
- 47:10Belichick. And I was high on North Carolina
- 47:11last year and that was a train wreck.
- 47:13And I'm surprised he was only #7 on your rankings because I
- 47:17thought this dude would be like. Right out of the gate I was
- 47:20bashing that higher. I mean I.
- 47:23Caroline has to take into account the talent on the
- 47:26roster, of which he had none, starting with Tim's favorite
- 47:29quarterback, Gio Lopez. Garbage.
- 47:32But Blaine's got the talent, it's just a matter of how
- 47:35quickly it can all come together.
- 47:36Yeah, well, I think Gio Lopez was better coached at South
- 47:40Alabama than he was at North Carolina, so I think that's what
- 47:43it was. Yeah, that was the problem.
- 47:45The first time, that is the only thing.
- 47:51The first sign of trouble is when the coach comes in and
- 47:55starts hiring his friends or relatives.
- 47:58Yeah. That's not a.
- 47:59That's not a good. When your girlfriend's younger
- 48:01than your starting quarterback, that's also probably all.
- 48:11Right. Well, I crossed out my question
- 48:14so that's all I got on my end. Do you guys have anything else
- 48:18you want to add? I just my last two in passing
- 48:20that I thought were pretty good hires.
- 48:21Colorado State with Jim Mora, I think he'll bring credibility
- 48:24and discipline to that program. So I like that hire and to
- 48:27replace him at Connecticut, I love that Jason Candle hire.
- 48:31I think that there's some really good potential with that program
- 48:34with him there. So I like both of those hires.
- 48:37Yeah, though I think both of those are good.
- 48:38I was actually surprised that Mora didn't go back to UCLA
- 48:42because they were really high on him and then and then all of a
- 48:45sudden he was at Colorado State, a perfect hire for him, for
- 48:50them. It really, he'll do a really
- 48:52good job there. 01 Final footnote Yeah, Virginia Tech
- 48:58does play at Miami late in November this year.
- 49:01Interesting. Excellent.
- 49:03We'll test it, see if the James Franklin rule applies.
- 49:07The Aces. He'll still lose that game, but
- 49:09the problem is he could be 8 and 2 going into that game and it
- 49:13might not be, you know, that huge of a deal.
- 49:16What's the you got the rest of his schedule?
- 49:18What? What's it?
- 49:19What's it look like real quick if you don't mind.
- 49:21Let's see if I can pull that up. Can't make it any bigger.
- 49:26So we got. No, I'm just curious about their
- 49:28their conference slate. Pitt, Cal, Virginia, Miami, SMU
- 49:32Clemson, Georgia Tech that Stanford in there Boston College
- 49:39Sorry they're one of the teams that have 9 games.
- 49:42ACC what are you doing? Can you figure out your damn?
- 49:44Kind No, they can't, no. The outside of Miami, there's
- 49:51nobody on there that really scares me, I mean.
- 49:55The ACC commissioner is hanging out with Crack Monster.
- 49:57Tech lost their offensive coordinator and Haines King is
- 50:01gone. Boston College, Pittsburgh's, I
- 50:04think on the upswing. Cal, we already talked.
- 50:06I don't know that that's not a, that's not a horrible schedule.
- 50:10Yeah, it's not terrible. So let me ask you guys, what do
- 50:14you think of the high of the out Scottish hire at Auburn?
- 50:20I was going to actually ask you about that.
- 50:22I like it, but that team has lost so much.
- 50:27I, I, I actually want to bet them to beat Baylor in Week 1
- 50:32because you can see all these South Florida guys coming over.
- 50:35Well, oh, they're in the SEC now.
- 50:37Well, the Baylor defense, as we've learned, is not anywhere
- 50:39near an SEC caliber. I think they can win that.
- 50:43I love what he does offensively, but man, they've lost all three
- 50:47of their quarterbacks to the portal.
- 50:49They lost Cam Coleman. I mean, there is a ton on both
- 50:52sides of the ball that he needs to replace.
- 50:55If he can replace that and they can gel quit, I don't I don't
- 50:58see them having a problem offensively.
- 51:00And last year that was their issue.
- 51:01Jackson Arnold was terrible, but they bring in Daniels in there
- 51:06for a few games. He was terrible as well.
- 51:08You know, they're they're like LSU defense was not their
- 51:10problem. Offensively, they'll be better.
- 51:15But yeah. Is Byron Brown going to have
- 51:17time to throw the ball or is he going to be scrambling for his
- 51:19life, you know, and injured by Week 7?
- 51:22I love to hire. I I just don't love the current
- 51:25roster. Yeah, it's going to take some
- 51:27time. The depth is lacking on that
- 51:29team severely. They need to build some depth
- 51:32out. And the upside of the offense
- 51:33is, is is there. And I think it will, it will
- 51:36happen, but it's going to take a little time.
- 51:38Yeah, the, the problem with that job is the what you just said,
- 51:41the patients like that, they've got inpatient donors and you
- 51:45know, they, you know, they've, they've pulled the plug on how
- 51:49many of the last coaches that they've had.
- 51:51You can go back, you know, and so I, I'm just, if I were, if I
- 51:58were Alex, I don't know that I would have taken that job
- 52:00because of that, because it's going to take you're going to
- 52:03need some patience. They're going to need to and
- 52:06they just don't have it there. They, you know, they, they fire
- 52:09the coach at the drop of a hat. So I don't know.
- 52:13That's all. That's a really rough job.
- 52:17Rough as Arkansas though, because there were reports that
- 52:20come out that he had accepted the Arkansas job and then his
- 52:23camp came out and said no, we didn't.
- 52:24And like 73 hours later he's coaching Auburn.
- 52:27So that's why he's like lesser of two evils.
- 52:29I'll take Auburn over Arkansas any day of the week.
- 52:33But I think he was supposed to be.
- 52:34The Arkansas guy. I would have taken the Arkansas
- 52:37job over this one, too. Look, look, if Sam Pittman,
- 52:41they, you know. I agree You could have stability
- 52:45at Arkansas. I I think you can.
- 52:46I think you can build a program there.
- 52:48You could have some time to do it there.
- 52:49I think that fan base would support you there.
- 52:52I think. I think that would be the better
- 52:54job. I would rather go to Arkansas.
- 52:56That's a that's a great fan base there.
- 52:58If they're really on board with you, they're really They're all
- 53:01in, yeah. Yeah.
- 53:06All right. Well, that was a good hour.
- 53:08It went by pretty quickly, I thought.
- 53:10This is a lot of fun. Yeah, this is great.
- 53:12I enjoyed. It a lot.
- 53:15You know what? That's right.
- 53:16You know, my dog's been sitting here.
- 53:17Bubba's been sitting here the whole time.
- 53:19He has not made one sound. Nice yeah I got mine sitting
- 53:24right here. She hasn't made a pee pee but we
- 53:26haven't made any pics. Usually when I make a bad
- 53:28actually start barking so. You were actually thinking of
- 53:30having Bubba replacing you at some point last year.
- 53:33You. Know.
- 53:35That could only. You would have done better than
- 53:37I. Yeah, my, my new puppy is over
- 53:41there. I was asking the wife, you're
- 53:42going to be home before 7 or after 8.
- 53:44I'm like, because I'll record downstairs if you're home to
- 53:46watch the demon. I'm upstairs and she's actually
- 53:50slept the entire time, thank goodness.
- 53:53Fantastic. All right.
- 53:55Well, that'll wrap it up for the first show of the offseason for
- 53:5826. Darren, what's our next show
- 53:59going to be coming up? We've got we're, we're done for
- 54:03February. We've got a couple shows lined
- 54:06up in March our our famous bankroll management show, which,
- 54:10yes, is incredibly boring but incredibly important.
- 54:13Very important. With 40 states now eligible to
- 54:16bet on sports, we'll, we'll go over some some tips and tricks
- 54:19to to keep your bankroll at the one deposit that you start with
- 54:23for, for the entire season. And then a couple weeks after
- 54:26that we have our national championship preview show.
- 54:31Those odds are out at all the major sports books, and we might
- 54:36actually have a a guest for that as well.
- 54:39That's right, Doc Sports, right? Yeah, some guy from Doc Sports
- 54:42is actually planning on joining us, so we'll see if that works
- 54:46out the corner his handler he's in, so we'll see.
- 54:52How that? Goes but Yep.
- 54:53And then April kicks off, I think, well, we got a Heisman
- 54:58preview I think to start April and then like mid-april, right
- 55:01through August. It's conference previews every
- 55:04week or every two weeks depending on what conference.
- 55:08We're doing all right. All right, let's go do it.
- 55:10Mark, thank you so much for joining us, all you people.
