- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Welcome to an NFL draft posted by the writers of
- 0:08Speaker 2: Patriots dot Com. From now until you here the New
- 0:11Speaker 2: England Patriots Slight the Countdown is on. Welcome to the
- 0:15Speaker 2: Patriots Draft Countdown presented by bud Light. What's up, everybody?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of Patriots Draft Countdown, brought to
- 0:24Speaker 2: you by bud Light. Bud Light Easy to Drink, Easy
- 0:27Speaker 2: to Enjoy, the official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And we're back, guys, just a little over three weeks
- 0:32Speaker 2: to go to the draft. We've rifled through a lot
- 0:34Speaker 2: of prospect videos and we're here just to kick off
- 0:36Speaker 2: this show talking about some of the latest draft news.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I think we're kind of settling into silly season. Paul
- 0:41Speaker 2: feels like this is when people start to, you know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: you hear things like what that doesn't make sense? They
- 0:45Speaker 2: love that guy, most notably with Tony Pauline's report yesterday
- 0:49Speaker 2: that Elliott wolf enamored with JJ McCarthy, the hot new
- 0:52Speaker 2: name here on the mock draft circuit. So what do
- 0:56Speaker 2: you take away from that anything?
- 0:58Speaker 3: I don't take much in terms of what it means
- 1:00Speaker 3: directly to the Patriots. I think that Elliott Wolf and
- 1:03Speaker 3: the you know, the cast of thousands that he's evidently
- 1:06Speaker 3: been traveling with while you know, going on to watch
- 1:09Speaker 3: all these guys. I think McCarthy's an interesting prospect only
- 1:13Speaker 3: because of what I've been saying all along. I just
- 1:15Speaker 3: think he has the most unknown because I just haven't
- 1:18Speaker 3: seen him be able to do all the things that
- 1:20Speaker 3: all the other guys had to do for their teams
- 1:22Speaker 3: in college. So I think there's a skill set there,
- 1:25Speaker 3: you know. I think he's got you know, good enough size.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I think he runs tough. I think he's pretty athletic.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I think he's shown that he can move around and
- 1:32Speaker 3: make plays outside the pocket. But like I said, I
- 1:36Speaker 3: just haven't seen him be able to, you know, put
- 1:38Speaker 3: a team on his back and have to throw the
- 1:40Speaker 3: ball thirty five forty forty five times to ensure victory.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I've seen all the other guys have to do that
- 1:45Speaker 3: from time to time.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Van, I'm gonna tee up. And the last episode we
- 1:48Speaker 2: showed a film breakdown, you did a McCarthy. You know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: we talked so much about guys like Mac Jones and
- 1:52Speaker 2: Joe Burrow and these guys that come from LSU and
- 1:54Speaker 2: Alabama that have superstar casts around them, and maybe not
- 1:58Speaker 2: quite the case with JJ McCarthy. Do you think he's
- 1:59Speaker 2: get I think downgraded before you know, think if he
- 2:01Speaker 2: was playing on one of those teams, Yeah, I'd be
- 2:03Speaker 2: talking a little bit higher about it.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Well, that's what a lot of people that like JJ
- 2:06Speaker 4: McCarthy will tell you. I'll just say this along the
- 2:09Speaker 4: same lines as Paul. Last week it was that the
- 2:12Speaker 4: Commanders are enamored with JJ McCarthy. This week it's now
- 2:15Speaker 4: the Patriots that are enamored with JJ McCarthy. So I
- 2:18Speaker 4: think that people are just trying to figure out where
- 2:20Speaker 4: to put JJ McCarthy. Like, obviously he's a guy that's
- 2:23Speaker 4: going to go a little bit higher than maybe we
- 2:25Speaker 4: thought a couple months ago. He's going to probably go
- 2:28Speaker 4: in the top half of the first round, But is
- 2:30Speaker 4: it going to be as early as two or three
- 2:32Speaker 4: or are we more talking about in that mac Jones?
- 2:34Speaker 4: Can he Pickett range in the teens? I would just
- 2:38Speaker 4: say that proceed with caution this time of year. This
- 2:41Speaker 4: time last year, Will Levis was a top ten pick.
- 2:44Speaker 4: In twenty twenty one, Mac Jones was a San Francisco
- 2:46Speaker 4: forty nine er at number three overall. Then we get
- 2:49Speaker 4: to the draft and they end up finding their level
- 2:51Speaker 4: and they end up going in a more comfortable range
- 2:54Speaker 4: for their skill set. I think that there's a lot
- 2:56Speaker 4: to like about JJ McCarthy in terms of the talent
- 3:00Speaker 4: and just the ball of clay that he is. You know,
- 3:03Speaker 4: he does have the ability, like Paul said, to move
- 3:05Speaker 4: get outside the pocket. He's elusive in the pocket, put
- 3:08Speaker 4: down a fantastic three cone times. So he's got that
- 3:11Speaker 4: agility and that jitterbugness about him in the pocket. And
- 3:14Speaker 4: he's got a plus arm. I wouldn't say it's an
- 3:16Speaker 4: elite arm, but it's a better than average NFL arm
- 3:19Speaker 4: as well, So you have some things to work with.
- 3:22Speaker 4: But there's a lot of things I think in his
- 3:23Speaker 4: game that needs seasoning, a post snap decision making probably
- 3:27Speaker 4: being the biggest one, but also accuracy in terms of
- 3:30Speaker 4: ball placement down the field too. So I'm not a
- 3:33Speaker 4: JJ McCarthy guy. Everybody knows that, but I'm trying to
- 3:36Speaker 4: open my mind and not be as critical about it
- 3:38Speaker 4: because clearly there are people in the league that have
- 3:41Speaker 4: a lot of love for him.
- 3:43Speaker 2: McCarthy not at all.
- 3:44Speaker 5: I think it's smoke screen season, and I think it's
- 3:47Speaker 5: a very risky pick to take him. I don't think
- 3:49Speaker 5: he's better than the other three guys. I think it's
- 3:51Speaker 5: risky to take him at three, and I think it's
- 3:53Speaker 5: gonna be pretty funy when it just goes Caleb, Jaden,
- 3:55Speaker 5: Drake and it is boring, but sometimes it's what has
- 3:59Speaker 5: to happen.
- 3:59Speaker 2: So that's how I wanted to go. And you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: I put out my latest mock draft, So yeah, Drake
- 4:04Speaker 2: May my guy. You know, I'd love them to go
- 4:06Speaker 2: with him. And we've got coming up next here on
- 4:09Speaker 2: Draft Countdown, we have a full film segment where Evan
- 4:12Speaker 2: breaks down Drake May as well, just like he did
- 4:13Speaker 2: with McCarthy. So, guys, let's just kind of hash out
- 4:15Speaker 2: these two a little bit right now, because it's like
- 4:17Speaker 2: the more things change, the more they say the same Paul,
- 4:19Speaker 2: you said a couple of shows ago, you know, on Unfiltered,
- 4:22Speaker 2: we've been talking about the same stuff. Ultimately, does it
- 4:24Speaker 2: just kind of still boil down to date Daniels or May?
- 4:28Speaker 2: I think it does.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And I think that particular thing I think boils down
- 4:32Speaker 3: to your particular taste and I think that there's a
- 4:35Speaker 3: lot to like about both guys. And that's why I
- 4:37Speaker 3: said some nice things about McCarthy too, because Evan's right,
- 4:40Speaker 3: just because we don't necessarily look at McCarthy in that
- 4:43Speaker 3: light doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to be talked about.
- 4:46Speaker 2: You know, like that.
- 4:47Speaker 3: So I like the idea of May because I just
- 4:51Speaker 3: feel like there's so much upside there. Now you can
- 4:55Speaker 3: make an argument that, you know, the opposite is not
- 4:58Speaker 3: what you're looking for. If it doesn't wor work out,
- 5:00Speaker 3: you don't really have much to fall back on. I
- 5:03Speaker 3: just feel like he had to do a lot of
- 5:05Speaker 3: things for that team last year, and I want that.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I want a guy who sort of had to be
- 5:11Speaker 3: the guy and how to have it all on his shoulders.
- 5:14Speaker 3: And you know, I don't think it was great. But
- 5:16Speaker 3: when you're talking about, you know, well he failed, well
- 5:20Speaker 3: what was North Carolina last year, like like eight and
- 5:23Speaker 3: four or something like. It's not like they went, you know,
- 5:25Speaker 3: two and twelve. You know, when when it was all
- 5:28Speaker 3: on his shoulders, he still won some games, didn't win
- 5:31Speaker 3: as many as a lot of people thought he might,
- 5:34Speaker 3: So you know that's how it worked.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I like May.
- 5:37Speaker 3: I think a lot of them, but certainly I understand
- 5:40Speaker 3: the upside with with Daniels too. I know evan't got
- 5:43Speaker 3: a chance to see him both up close and personal.
- 5:45Speaker 2: But yeah, we'll talk about the Pro days. You were
- 5:46Speaker 2: down there, Yeah, Tour of the South, So yeah, right,
- 5:48Speaker 2: it was a fun time.
- 5:50Speaker 4: I think the biggest thing with Jaden Daniels is that
- 5:53Speaker 4: you are really banking on his athleticism and his running
- 5:57Speaker 4: ability being his superpower. Because what I saw from him
- 6:00Speaker 4: throwing the football was okay. I wasn't blown away, though.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I didn't look at him and say, Wow, this arm
- 6:05Speaker 4: talent is just fantastic. He's got a really big arm
- 6:09Speaker 4: and he can kind of just flick the wrists and
- 6:11Speaker 4: generate velocity and this that the other thing. I kind
- 6:14Speaker 4: of felt like it was an NFL arm We go
- 6:17Speaker 4: out to training camp and stuff like that, and we
- 6:19Speaker 4: see guys throw all the time, and I didn't look
- 6:22Speaker 4: at his arm talent and sit there and say, this
- 6:25Speaker 4: is so much better than Mac Jones or this is
- 6:27Speaker 4: so much better than Bailey ZAPPI maybe a little bit
- 6:30Speaker 4: more control on the ball than those guys at times,
- 6:33Speaker 4: but not blown away. Whereas with Drake May he just
- 6:36Speaker 4: has a handcannon. I mean that guy off platform, off
- 6:40Speaker 4: one leg, rolling to his left, rolling to his right,
- 6:43Speaker 4: It doesn't make a difference. He can just flick at
- 6:45Speaker 4: sixty five yards in the air. And I was standing
- 6:47Speaker 4: right there when he dropped it in to tes Walker
- 6:50Speaker 4: on the sideline sixty five yards on a dime too,
- 6:53Speaker 4: and I was just like, man, this is just that's different.
- 6:57Speaker 4: That's a different trait. And if you were looking, if
- 7:00Speaker 4: you still are of the of the mind that you
- 7:02Speaker 4: need to win with your arm in this league, and
- 7:04Speaker 4: eventually all of the running and off platform stuff is
- 7:08Speaker 4: all great, well and good, But the person that's gonna
- 7:10Speaker 4: sit in the pocket and be able to pick a
- 7:12Speaker 4: part of defense is the guy that's gonna hold the
- 7:14Speaker 4: trophy at the end of the day. I just look
- 7:16Speaker 4: at Drake May and think that that is an easier
- 7:18Speaker 4: path for him to get to that point. With Daniels,
- 7:21Speaker 4: I think you're really counting on the whole package, the
- 7:24Speaker 4: running ability, the arm and it all coming together at
- 7:27Speaker 4: this level for that ability to go on a season
- 7:30Speaker 4: like he had last year at LSU.
- 7:33Speaker 5: First, I want to hear more about Tess Walker, but
- 7:35Speaker 5: I think Jaden Daniels, I don't think we're ready for him.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I think I know Evan's mentioned this before, he had
- 7:41Speaker 5: Malik Neighbors, he had Brian Thomas, Like, I think he
- 7:43Speaker 5: needs a bit more structure, and I think, honestly, the
- 7:46Speaker 5: Commanders have a more set offense right now for him
- 7:48Speaker 5: than the Pats would. And Drake May, just as I said,
- 7:51Speaker 5: you can sin for a while. He has the traits,
- 7:53Speaker 5: he has an absolute cannon. So I think May's the
- 7:57Speaker 5: guy and I really hope he ends up here.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Yeah, when it comes to elevator the players around them,
- 8:01Speaker 4: I think that Jayden Daniels could distribute the ball to
- 8:04Speaker 4: good receivers no problem. But when it comes to actually
- 8:07Speaker 4: taking that an offense that maybe doesn't have great receivers
- 8:10Speaker 4: yet and elevating it to be on what it is,
- 8:12Speaker 4: I just think Drake May brings more to the table
- 8:15Speaker 4: in that respect.
- 8:15Speaker 2: All Right, we're here now talking the defensive front seven guys.
- 8:19Speaker 2: We're gonna include three different position groups here, because let's
- 8:21Speaker 2: face it, the Patriots need offense, and I would make
- 8:24Speaker 2: an argument that they need some front seven help in
- 8:26Speaker 2: the not too distant future, but for this year, just
- 8:29Speaker 2: running down real quick, I mean Lawrence guy departed. However,
- 8:32Speaker 2: they did sign arm On Watts kind of could fill
- 8:33Speaker 2: that position. You got ke On White from last year
- 8:36Speaker 2: stepping up there, but otherwise it's kind of the same
- 8:38Speaker 2: front we know the year Christian Barmore had daniel Lequallee
- 8:41Speaker 2: a rotational piece coming back at linebacker. You got Bentley
- 8:45Speaker 2: and Tavani Tavai Sioni Taki Taki comes in, Rayquo McMillan
- 8:50Speaker 2: coming back from an injury. I'm just listening all these
- 8:51Speaker 2: guys off to show some of the depth. The one
- 8:53Speaker 2: position I do think is a concern though, is along
- 8:56Speaker 2: the edge, and so it's not impossible to see them
- 8:58Speaker 2: going in that position early on. But I'd like to
- 9:01Speaker 2: just start with like the four top guys I think
- 9:04Speaker 2: of that group, which is Jared Verse, Chop Robinson, Dallas
- 9:07Speaker 2: Turner and lie To Latsu. Four guys who all really
- 9:11Speaker 2: fit kind of the Patriots prototype. Along the edge. We
- 9:14Speaker 2: could potentially make, you know, a good three down rotational
- 9:17Speaker 2: piece alongside Matthew Judon, josh Ucha, Anthony Jenning. Still feels
- 9:21Speaker 2: like they were a little light there, but tis they're
- 9:23Speaker 2: probably not gonna be able to take one of those guys.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm kind of looking at this like we talked
- 9:27Speaker 5: about the DBS. I hope we don't take somebody at
- 9:30Speaker 5: the defensive front seven before the fourth. But Jared Verse,
- 9:34Speaker 5: I mean we saw him Indianapolis that kill Roy shout
- 9:36Speaker 5: out to their bread sticks. But that guy is a
- 9:38Speaker 5: unit and it's I said it earlier. It's just it's
- 9:40Speaker 5: a shame that we had such a tough year because
- 9:42Speaker 5: he would love to see these guys on the Patriots,
- 9:45Speaker 5: but we just this isn't what we need right now.
- 9:46Speaker 5: So but Jared Verse to the top of the crop
- 9:49Speaker 5: right there.
- 9:49Speaker 3: For me, He's actually one that I'm really high on
- 9:52Speaker 3: and I love his story, you know, coming from a
- 9:54Speaker 3: lower level, you know, out of nowhere from Albany and
- 9:57Speaker 3: you know, being just a star at a level like
- 10:01Speaker 3: Florida State. So I agree with tis really like the player.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Don't really see much of a chance of the Patriots
- 10:07Speaker 3: being in position now. Maybe if you're talking about trading
- 10:10Speaker 3: down in some of the dominoes that you kind of
- 10:13Speaker 3: traded down with an eye on don't fall into place.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I think that's a guy that he screened Patriot when
- 10:20Speaker 3: you watch him, But again, I think very very little
- 10:23Speaker 3: to no chance.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I felt like Dallas Turner two, Alabama guy. I
- 10:26Speaker 2: mean another one that would easily fit lot to the
- 10:28Speaker 2: guys who have good stories. I mean, seemed like his
- 10:30Speaker 2: career was going to end the neck injury, comes back,
- 10:32Speaker 2: very athletic, very long.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Lot two is one of my favorite guys because I
- 10:36Speaker 3: don't watch a ton of games, but I'm watching. I'm
- 10:39Speaker 3: watching the CLA game and this guy a lot too is.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I think it might have been against USC and he
- 10:43Speaker 3: made a couple of plays like back to back. I'm like, oh,
- 10:45Speaker 3: I'm going to keep that guy in mind. Yeah, Like
- 10:47Speaker 3: two minutes later the guy goes, no, he's gonna be
- 10:49Speaker 3: a top fifteen pick. That's why I'm like nothing that's
- 10:52Speaker 3: by Paul.
- 10:53Speaker 1: He's your prototypical edge rusher. I mean thirteen sacks in
- 10:56Speaker 1: the season, just absolutely dominated this year to UCLA and
- 11:00Speaker 1: I mean not a free to catch the football. Two
- 11:02Speaker 1: interceptions on the season as well. But he's a guy
- 11:05Speaker 1: that is going to set the edge when you need
- 11:07Speaker 1: him to. Same with Jared Verus, like easily, in my opinion,
- 11:11Speaker 1: the two top guys in that draft. Yeah, that you
- 11:13Speaker 1: could slide from.
- 11:15Speaker 2: That's what they need like, you know, I think they.
- 11:16Speaker 2: I mean it's just it's an underrated need and that's
- 11:18Speaker 2: why I like if the were to happen early, I
- 11:19Speaker 2: wouldn't totally hate it. The other guy I'll just mention
- 11:22Speaker 2: is Darius Robinson from Zoo. Watched him during Senior Bowl practices.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I mean, he is I just wrote he's a handful.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I mean wherever he lines up, he can play a
- 11:31Speaker 2: number of different spots. I don't know if he's going
- 11:33Speaker 2: to make it out of the first round, but he's
- 11:34Speaker 2: another one who maybe not quite in that upper tier,
- 11:37Speaker 2: but if he were to slip, I could maybe consider
- 11:39Speaker 2: it there in the second round. Yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 1: No, he's great, honestly, always in the backfield, just always,
- 11:45Speaker 1: just his presence is felt. And fourteen tackle for loss
- 11:48Speaker 1: in the season led the team, so it's it's a
- 11:51Speaker 1: great number.
- 11:52Speaker 3: So just before we move on from the edge guys,
- 11:54Speaker 3: I'm curious what you think in terms of the style
- 11:57Speaker 3: of edge player if the Patriots again, I think we
- 12:00Speaker 3: all agree we're talking day three yep. Yeah, because I
- 12:03Speaker 3: think that you know the needs are there, but would
- 12:05Speaker 3: you want to you know, a bigger edge guy, maybe
- 12:09Speaker 3: you know Anthony Jennings, physical edge setter or would you
- 12:13Speaker 3: want maybe a smaller two fifty you know, pass rusher.
- 12:18Speaker 2: A great question, Paul, I mean I love that you
- 12:19Speaker 2: kind of you kind of set me up because I have,
- 12:22Speaker 2: you know, two later around options. I think the cover
- 12:24Speaker 2: kind of both those options.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Uh.
- 12:26Speaker 2: You know, Nelson Caesar is one who's kind of been
- 12:28Speaker 2: on my radar for a little bit. He's kind of
- 12:30Speaker 2: more that prototypical, has the power, you know as a captain,
- 12:34Speaker 2: but you know, more like kind of the edge setter type,
- 12:36Speaker 2: maybe need some work on the pass rush. It's a
- 12:38Speaker 2: little bit more Jennings than Uce. But then Jalen Harrell
- 12:41Speaker 2: from Michigan, I mean everybody watched Michigan's defense this year.
- 12:45Speaker 2: He's another one who you know, kind of reminds me
- 12:47Speaker 2: of Uce a little bit. Maybe not quite so specific
- 12:50Speaker 2: to being a pass rusher, a designated pass rusher like
- 12:53Speaker 2: Uch is with his you know o J speed around
- 12:56Speaker 2: the edge. But I just was really impressed with kind
- 12:58Speaker 2: of Harold's athleticism. He's kind of shifty, you know, he
- 13:01Speaker 2: can kind of beat guys and make guys miss.
- 13:02Speaker 5: If you're taking to edge rusher, I want to get
- 13:04Speaker 5: after the quarterback. That's why I like Mohammed Kamara Colorado State.
- 13:08Speaker 5: I don't know if you guys watched the one in
- 13:10Speaker 5: Colorado game. Everybody watched Kara safers the Colorado but he's
- 13:13Speaker 5: a beast, just gets back. They're very violent and aggressive
- 13:16Speaker 5: off the line. He had thirty and a half career sacks,
- 13:19Speaker 5: five forrest fumbles, forty five and a half tackles for
- 13:21Speaker 5: loss and that's kind of what I want there. And
- 13:24Speaker 5: I think if you're taking an edge rusher as the Patriots,
- 13:26Speaker 5: you know we have Judon Anthony Jennings uch is you're
- 13:29Speaker 5: really going to develop and the hope they hit their
- 13:32Speaker 5: stride next so you don't really need a day one starter.
- 13:34Speaker 2: So that's my thought there.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the Pageers retaining Uch shows that they
- 13:39Speaker 1: feel they have a little bit more in him, especially
- 13:41Speaker 1: at the edge role. Obviously fell off a little bit
- 13:44Speaker 1: this season, but I think they're expecting him to get
- 13:48Speaker 1: back to where he was in twenty twenty two. I
- 13:50Speaker 1: think that's a huge step that he'll need to take
- 13:52Speaker 1: heading into this season to really see if he's worth
- 13:54Speaker 1: what the Patriots are looking for.
- 13:56Speaker 3: The j I was gonna say, I know, you want
- 13:58Speaker 3: to talk about the big guys inside Mike Special. But
- 14:02Speaker 3: one thing to keep in mind for this discussion is
- 14:04Speaker 3: Judon specifically because last year of his deal. I do think,
- 14:08Speaker 3: you know, I'm not telling you he's getting traded tomorrow,
- 14:11Speaker 3: but it wouldn't you know, it wouldn't be overly surprising
- 14:14Speaker 3: to me. And then all of a sudden you pick
- 14:17Speaker 3: up maybe a second or third round pick and you
- 14:19Speaker 3: replace him with a young pass rush like that wouldn't
- 14:21Speaker 3: be out of the rama.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Possibility, Like I'd throw Chris Braswell from another guy at
- 14:25Speaker 2: Senior Bowl, similar kind of thing, you know, but more
- 14:27Speaker 2: of a pass rusher. But Bama, you know, yeah, I
- 14:30Speaker 2: love those Bama guys, and I mean that's you know,
- 14:33Speaker 2: but I think, just to go back to your question, Paul,
- 14:34Speaker 2: I mean I really think they they really need to
- 14:36Speaker 2: find a three down guy. I mean, I don't think,
- 14:38Speaker 2: you know, you want to go into the season thinking like,
- 14:39Speaker 2: oh god, you know Jenning's out there first second and
- 14:41Speaker 2: get him off Oocha's in. Like it's just you'd love
- 14:44Speaker 2: to find a three down guy that can kind of
- 14:45Speaker 2: do it all. And you know, maybe you draft somebody
- 14:47Speaker 2: this year like that, you know, not like a Caesar
- 14:49Speaker 2: that you can kind of develop and allow him to
- 14:51Speaker 2: grow into that. But before we get to down into
- 14:54Speaker 2: the you know, the big guys inside, I just wanted to,
- 14:56Speaker 2: you know, highlight Peyton Wilson from NC State, who he
- 14:59Speaker 2: ran a four foot three at the combine, which is like,
- 15:02Speaker 2: you know, he's like six two to forty, I mean,
- 15:04Speaker 2: absolutely flying. Just a lot of injury concerns with him.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I think the Patriots are probably mostly set inside right now,
- 15:11Speaker 2: but he's one guy if you wanted to kind of
- 15:13Speaker 2: evolve a little bit, add a little bit more speed
- 15:16Speaker 2: on the second level. Again, probably gonna go too high
- 15:18Speaker 2: from when they're gonna take him if they believe he
- 15:20Speaker 2: can stay healthy, but could fit.
- 15:21Speaker 5: I got another guy which might be the pat sweet
- 15:23Speaker 5: spot kind of maybe fourth round Cedric Gray from UNC.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Bit of an outside linebacker, also play him on the edge,
- 15:30Speaker 5: but that he kind of is like a Jennings to me, like,
- 15:32Speaker 5: you know, develop him works out great. If not, like
- 15:34Speaker 5: you know, you give him some time. So that's a
- 15:36Speaker 5: that's a guy I'd look out for. Also UNC, you
- 15:38Speaker 5: know Mat Drake may I know each other?
- 15:44Speaker 2: That doesn't work, Chris, you got any you got any
- 15:47Speaker 2: off the ball linebacker types? Or should be moving onto
- 15:50Speaker 2: the defensive late I d ls as we like to
- 15:52Speaker 2: call them.
- 15:53Speaker 1: I have a couple of the d ls in there.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I will tee us up with the biggest of
- 15:56Speaker 2: them all too.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So all right, Braden Fisk out of Florida's I mean
- 16:00Speaker 1: just an absolute dog. We were watching him at the combine,
- 16:03Speaker 1: just our mouths fellow the floor when we saw his speed.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Uh in that forty yard dash of his. But he's
- 16:09Speaker 1: a guy. I mean forty three tackle is the true
- 16:10Speaker 1: run stuffer. But also you can get to the quarterback.
- 16:12Speaker 1: He's quick. I mean if he gets his hands inside you,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I mean it's game over.
- 16:17Speaker 2: You lost that battle.
- 16:18Speaker 1: So I mean.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Aggressive, I mean just he's I forget what with what
- 16:21Speaker 2: the word I wrote, but he just I mean he's
- 16:23Speaker 2: a dog. You just tell like he's he's gonna come in,
- 16:25Speaker 2: he's gonna play hard. But I thought you were gonna
- 16:27Speaker 2: go with Tovandre Sweat. It's just big. That's a big dude.
- 16:33Speaker 2: He can move it in the sor bawl. I mean
- 16:34Speaker 2: just a big guy. Maybe a lot of players in
- 16:36Speaker 2: the point when.
- 16:36Speaker 5: You're at a five to five point two or something,
- 16:38Speaker 5: which guy that size is absurd.
- 16:40Speaker 2: It's like mass equals four times acceleration. They're like, oh
- 16:43Speaker 2: my god. But he's you know again like Godshaw, you know,
- 16:47Speaker 2: bar Moore is more of a kind of penetrator type,
- 16:49Speaker 2: like you know, te Trick Whise. You know, is is
- 16:51Speaker 2: he the right fit or you you know, are you
- 16:53Speaker 2: maybe you know, considering key On White to be in
- 16:56Speaker 2: that role. So it's just I could see, you know,
- 16:58Speaker 2: and Sweat's gonna go to but he kind of needs
- 17:01Speaker 2: some of those space eaters. That's those kind of two
- 17:03Speaker 2: gap guys. I do have some other ones though later on.
- 17:05Speaker 2: But Paul, you you mentioned Sweat great in the playoffs.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Yeah, no, He's made a lot of plays. He was
- 17:10Speaker 3: a big part of that disruptive front. They weren't great
- 17:13Speaker 3: defensively as a team, and obviously Washington had their way
- 17:16Speaker 3: with him in that game. But I do think he
- 17:18Speaker 3: showed up in most of the games. I watched Chris Jenkins,
- 17:20Speaker 3: another kid from Michigan. We talked about in some of
- 17:25Speaker 3: earlier shows about the kids of pros, and we didn't
- 17:29Speaker 3: talk on the off ball linebackers of Jeremiah Trotter. Same
- 17:32Speaker 3: kind of thing, you know, good blood lines. I'm always
- 17:34Speaker 3: intrigued by those guys, especially when they play similar you know, positions,
- 17:38Speaker 3: so obviously, you know, we talk about it at the
- 17:40Speaker 3: high profile with Marvin Harrison. Chris Jenkins's dad was a
- 17:44Speaker 3: tremendous All Pro caliber interior defensive lineman. So I don't
- 17:48Speaker 3: know where he's gonna fall. He's probably Day two rather
- 17:51Speaker 3: than day three, so he's probably out of the Patriots range.
- 17:55Speaker 3: But another guy to keep an eye on.
- 17:56Speaker 5: I had a Row Row Row got that right, I
- 18:01Speaker 5: actually did. I can already hear the fans going rude.
- 18:06Speaker 5: He's really he's a big boy. It really takes up
- 18:08Speaker 5: space for the linebackers, free them up. I just think, like,
- 18:10Speaker 5: once again, this isn't a glaring need for the Patriots,
- 18:13Speaker 5: but this could be a fun developmental prospect. And he's
- 18:15Speaker 5: he might go a little too high. I also had
- 18:17Speaker 5: Leonard Taylor, third LT. Three from Miami, another big guy,
- 18:21Speaker 5: works hard and if he's a later round guy, you know,
- 18:23Speaker 5: just take him, why.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Not, and not to cut you off, but just going in.
- 18:27Speaker 1: I mean Mason Smith, another big interior guy, and we
- 18:30Speaker 1: talked about a little bit earlier, but six five, three
- 18:32Speaker 1: hundred and six pounds, like another big fellow. But he's quick. Yeah,
- 18:36Speaker 1: five oh one forty yard dash. I mean that's impressive
- 18:39Speaker 1: and something you can be agile when you need him
- 18:41Speaker 1: to be. Uh so again another run stuffer there for.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Another kind of tototypical three four D end and that's
- 18:48Speaker 2: you know, kind of what I was looking at with
- 18:50Speaker 2: some of these guys is day three two gappers And
- 18:52Speaker 2: it's not sexy, it's you know, it's it's these you know,
- 18:54Speaker 2: big guys that aren't gonna do a lot. They're probably
- 18:56Speaker 2: going to be just the first two downs. But I
- 18:58Speaker 2: think when you look at the Patriots defense and some structure,
- 19:00Speaker 2: this is you know what they want. They want a
- 19:02Speaker 2: couple guys inside that can take up multiple blockers. You
- 19:05Speaker 2: mentioned Smith, I'd also say Jordan Jefferson from US you
- 19:08Speaker 2: who probably more of a penetrator and you know, more
- 19:10Speaker 2: of that bar More type. But that's kind of where
- 19:13Speaker 2: I get confused. And yet, you know, you had a
- 19:14Speaker 2: good question Paul about just what are you looking for
- 19:16Speaker 2: on the edge, and it's you know, it's still how
- 19:17Speaker 2: are they going to evolve? I think you always need
- 19:20Speaker 2: both those two gapper tites, but you need guys like
- 19:22Speaker 2: Jefferson too, who have some speed like Barmore and can
- 19:25Speaker 2: penetrate and can affect the quarterback just specifically.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I'd be curious to see how the Patriots feel about it.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Is that going to change, you know, what they're actually
- 19:32Speaker 3: looking for with with Bill Gohn and you know, just
- 19:35Speaker 3: maybe Girod try to put some of an imprint of
- 19:37Speaker 3: his own on this or is it just kind of
- 19:40Speaker 3: stick to the system the way the way it is run.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Kind of covering all their bases, you know, like we
- 19:45Speaker 2: got penetrators, we got two gappers, we got run stopping
- 19:47Speaker 2: as you know, it's hard to have that like amount
- 19:49Speaker 2: of players and then have to like.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Yeah, Bill always seemed to be reluctant to sacrifice size
- 19:54Speaker 3: and physicality on the edge for pure rushing. So be
- 19:59Speaker 3: like I said, be curious to see if Gerad feels
- 20:02Speaker 3: the same, or if he decides to go after some
- 20:04Speaker 3: of these two hundred and forty pound edge guys. Yeah,
- 20:07Speaker 3: that probably aren't going to hold up against the run bike,
- 20:10Speaker 3: you know, Anthony Jennings is you know, but maybe you
- 20:13Speaker 3: get a little more explosiveness out there.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I think the Patriots also have like the age difference
- 20:19Speaker 1: between your interior guys. I mean you have the Christian Barmers,
- 20:21Speaker 1: who's still kind of young, but then you have Davon
- 20:24Speaker 1: Gotchaudis wise like they're getting up there in age, and
- 20:26Speaker 1: you want to see which guys can really fit in
- 20:28Speaker 1: that type of role, especially if there's going to be
- 20:30Speaker 1: some flow there.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I think it's it's not twenty twenty five, but after
- 20:34Speaker 2: next year, it's like nobody in the front seven center
- 20:37Speaker 2: contract and actually it might be an exit next year,
- 20:39Speaker 2: so it's like these guys are all coming up, so
- 20:40Speaker 2: it's you do have to have a mind for the future.
- 20:43Speaker 2: One last name I'll just mentioned Jaden and Cromedy from
- 20:45Speaker 2: Mississippi State, another four year starter, big powerful, two gapping,
- 20:48Speaker 2: interior day three type guy. I could see that kind
- 20:52Speaker 2: of pick making sense, especially if guys, you know, Jeremiah
- 20:55Speaker 2: farm Sam Roberts maybe not quite developing. I know we've
- 20:58Speaker 2: heard from Elliot Wolf that they want to play these
- 21:00Speaker 2: guys a little bit more, so, you know, maybe that
- 21:02Speaker 2: that allows them to have some depth with some of
- 21:04Speaker 2: these guys you haven't played.
- 21:06Speaker 3: He's got to get some he's got to get a
- 21:08Speaker 3: prominent role, right, Yeah, your second round pick, year two,
- 21:12Speaker 3: it's time.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Get him in there. You got anybody.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Else's I Paul touched them a little. Just Jeremi Trotter.
- 21:16Speaker 5: I know he's a linebacker.
- 21:17Speaker 2: I just watched that.
- 21:18Speaker 5: They don't make linebackers like that anymore. He's wearing number
- 21:20Speaker 5: fifty four, just the center green dot guy, and he's
- 21:23Speaker 5: gonna go too high for the Pats. But I mean
- 21:25Speaker 5: just he's quite a player, so it'd be interesting to
- 21:27Speaker 5: see if they did something there.
- 21:29Speaker 2: But all right, well, a lot of options there for
- 21:31Speaker 2: the Patriots to consider. We talked about their needs and
- 21:33Speaker 2: the depth and all that. So that's going to wrap
- 21:35Speaker 2: up the defensive side of the ball. Just a few
- 21:37Speaker 2: episodes left, and of course we'll finish off with a
- 21:40Speaker 2: full live hour episode wrap up everything we learned here.
- 21:43Speaker 2: I know everybody's getting itchy for the draft, so be
- 21:45Speaker 2: sure to stick with us here on Patriots Draft Countdown
- 21:48Speaker 2: releast every Wednesday,
