- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of Podcasts on Brink,
- 0:20Speaker 1: getting back into the regular swing of things two straight
- 0:23Speaker 1: weeks with an episode. This week's guest the coach Brian
- 0:28Speaker 1: Tonsny of Assembly Call and Delphi Bracketology Coach. It's been
- 0:34Speaker 1: a while since you've been on the show, but I
- 0:38Speaker 1: wanted to have you on this week to get some
- 0:41Speaker 1: thoughts on the new regime scheduling. Maybe we'll talk some
- 0:46Speaker 1: potential lineups and different things you expect to see how
- 0:49Speaker 1: the Hoosiers this season. Welcome back to podcast on the Brink.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Always good to see you. Understand you've been playing some
- 0:54Speaker 1: golf this offseason. How's that been going.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It's getting better, which is I have a long way
- 1:00Speaker 2: to go, so getting better doesn't mean that I'm good
- 1:04Speaker 2: at it. I do enjoy We have a teacher group
- 1:06Speaker 2: that gets together at least once or twice a week,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and then sometimes I get out in the morning and
- 1:10Speaker 2: go play around by myself. It's a way that I
- 1:13Speaker 2: can challenge now that I'm not coaching anymore. Try to
- 1:15Speaker 2: keep that competitive in nature. But I have a long
- 1:18Speaker 2: way to go with that, Alex. But it's always good
- 1:20Speaker 2: to be on your show. I love talking basketball. I
- 1:23Speaker 2: really appreciate what you do to bring information to us
- 1:27Speaker 2: as reporters, podcasters, whatever I'm called, and fans alike. So
- 1:32Speaker 2: it's always good to talk at Indiana basketball. So thanks
- 1:34Speaker 2: for having me.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking forward to you guys getting back into
- 1:39Speaker 1: the swing of things with Assembly called Miss hearing you
- 1:41Speaker 1: guys this offseason. So hopefully as we get into the
- 1:44Speaker 1: fall here and getting closer to some basketball being played,
- 1:47Speaker 1: we'll get back to some more regular Assembly Assembly Call content.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I know you guys have a strong following, and I'm
- 1:55Speaker 1: sure that some of your fans as well are going
- 1:59Speaker 1: to be excited to get you guys back on the
- 2:00Speaker 1: air more regularly.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, we're excited to We have decided to cut back
- 2:06Speaker 2: to everyday Thursday night shows, but we've done a few
- 2:09Speaker 2: shows throughout the summer and then once August comes, I
- 2:13Speaker 2: think you're going to see us regularly. Obviously every postgame
- 2:16Speaker 2: show will be there as well.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Good deal. So I just wanted to start off, you know,
- 2:21Speaker 1: it's obviously I think I looked at back and you know,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you haven't been on the show since I think late
- 2:27Speaker 1: December maybe last year, early early January, so a lot
- 2:31Speaker 1: of transpired since then. Just your early impression so far
- 2:36Speaker 1: of Darren DeVries and what he's been able to accomplish here.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Obviously had to totally rebuild the roster in Bloomington somewhat
- 2:44Speaker 1: out of necessity. I'm not sure exactly how that process
- 2:49Speaker 1: went down with all the transfers, and you know, whether
- 2:51Speaker 1: there was guys who actually wanted to keep, but ultimately
- 2:54Speaker 1: I think, you know, a clean start was probably best
- 2:56Speaker 1: for everyone involved. But now that you know, I say,
- 3:00Speaker 1: the dust is settled on the roster and you know
- 3:02Speaker 1: they do, I guess have one spot technically open. Who
- 3:05Speaker 1: knows if they'll fill that. Not speculating, just thinking out
- 3:08Speaker 1: loud here. They have twelve guys, they've got a you
- 3:11Speaker 1: know that trip coming up next month to Puerto Rico.
- 3:14Speaker 1: They've got the schedule set. Just what are your overall,
- 3:17Speaker 1: you know, high level thoughts on what has transpired here
- 3:20Speaker 1: the last couple of months and as we get ready
- 3:22Speaker 1: for these games coming up next month in Puerto Rico.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm excited for the change. I think change was
- 3:30Speaker 2: needed for Indiana basketball to try to get back to
- 3:33Speaker 2: where Indiana basketball should be in many of our eyes,
- 3:38Speaker 2: will Coach DeVries be that guy. We hope so right.
- 3:41Speaker 2: We do not know until the games start being played.
- 3:44Speaker 2: But almost everything that a new coach has to do
- 3:47Speaker 2: I think has been positive. One building the roster, as
- 3:51Speaker 2: you mentioned, yes it's a total turnaround, but in today's world,
- 3:54Speaker 2: that's a lot easier than if you had to do
- 3:56Speaker 2: it with freshmen or you know, jucoachransfers as he did
- 4:01Speaker 2: when he was at Drake before the open transfer portal.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I thought he got some very interesting players in there
- 4:07Speaker 2: that fit a prototype for what advis player is with size, shooting,
- 4:12Speaker 2: athleticism that I think has been different than what Indiana
- 4:15Speaker 2: has had in the past really eight years over two
- 4:18Speaker 2: coaching regimes. The emphasis on shooting is exciting for many
- 4:23Speaker 2: of us because that's a modern basketball. I think you're
- 4:26Speaker 2: going to see a little bit more of that. I
- 4:29Speaker 2: think the schedule was well done. I think part of
- 4:32Speaker 2: that is the trip. Being able to take the trip.
- 4:35Speaker 2: He did that at West Virginia. I think that helped
- 4:37Speaker 2: get West Virginia off to a good start in his
- 4:40Speaker 2: only year at West Virginia. I think that was a
- 4:42Speaker 2: good decision to make, and I think as we talk schedule,
- 4:46Speaker 2: I thought it was strong enough to build a resume
- 4:50Speaker 2: for bracketology, and it gets you ready for a tough
- 4:53Speaker 2: Big Ten conference. So I thought that was good. And
- 4:57Speaker 2: then I just appreciate his work when he signed Pickerson
- 5:00Speaker 2: and flew down there the day that Wilkerson made the decision.
- 5:04Speaker 2: That's been a little different than some coaches in college basketball,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and it was a little different than the approach that
- 5:10Speaker 2: coach Woodson did. And now he's starting. I don't follow
- 5:14Speaker 2: recruiting as much anymore because it's just so widespread, but
- 5:19Speaker 2: it seems like we're getting top talent to at least
- 5:21Speaker 2: come to visit, and top talent that's interested. And then
- 5:23Speaker 2: he is constantly working the recruiting angle, and it just
- 5:28Speaker 2: seems like he's a hard worker, which I think Indiana
- 5:30Speaker 2: and Indiana fans really want from their head coach. So
- 5:33Speaker 2: all signs for me since the change show a positive direction.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Now I may be having rose colored glasses and wanting
- 5:41Speaker 2: something so bad after twenty some years of struggle that
- 5:44Speaker 2: I'm over hyping it a little bit. But I think
- 5:47Speaker 2: when you have a pattern of really good decision making
- 5:53Speaker 2: in many different areas, you have to be pleased with
- 5:55Speaker 2: what we see so far, and then the results will
- 5:59Speaker 2: really determine that when the games start in November.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I told you this a little bit earlier before
- 6:05Speaker 1: we started the show. I had a chance, I'm not
- 6:08Speaker 1: exactly sure the date. I had a chance in later
- 6:10Speaker 1: later in June to go up and talk to Darren
- 6:13Speaker 1: Derees in his office for thirty five or so minutes.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And I obviously have covered Indiana basketball since two thousand
- 6:23Speaker 1: and seven, and obviously my role is somebody of the
- 6:26Speaker 1: meat of the media is always in favor of more
- 6:29Speaker 1: access and getting more information because that's you know, that's
- 6:31Speaker 1: how we communicate with our audience. That's why how I
- 6:33Speaker 1: can come on the podcast and be more informed when
- 6:35Speaker 1: I talk to guests and talk about the team, when
- 6:38Speaker 1: I write about the team. It's always good to to,
- 6:41Speaker 1: you know, have the perspective of a coach. And I
- 6:43Speaker 1: appreciated the fact that he was willing to sit down
- 6:44Speaker 1: and talk. But more than anything else, one of my
- 6:48Speaker 1: big takeaways from that conversation was just how relaxed, open,
- 6:53Speaker 1: honest he seemed in terms of everything he was discussing.
- 6:56Speaker 1: It didn't seem guarded in terms of anything in terms
- 7:00Speaker 1: of information, you know, I asked questions and he answered
- 7:03Speaker 1: them and had a smile on his face, and it
- 7:06Speaker 1: was maybe a little bit different than kind of, you know,
- 7:08Speaker 1: the interactions that some of the media have with the
- 7:10Speaker 1: last two coaches. So I was I was really encouraged
- 7:14Speaker 1: just from a media perspective. You know, I think fans
- 7:16Speaker 1: can expect when when Darren de Reese gives a press
- 7:18Speaker 1: conference and talks, not saying there's ever going to be
- 7:21Speaker 1: there's obviously going to be with any coach times where
- 7:23Speaker 1: maybe they're annoyed or don't like a question, or had
- 7:25Speaker 1: a rough practice and maybe aren't as detailed and in
- 7:28Speaker 1: depth as you like. But I appreciated the fact that
- 7:30Speaker 1: he was just willing to talk basketball. I think that's
- 7:33Speaker 1: one of the big things that maybe we've been missing
- 7:36Speaker 1: in terms of getting information in the past couple of regimes,
- 7:40Speaker 1: is just being able to ask a basketball question and
- 7:42Speaker 1: get a basketball answer. Having a coach that's willing to
- 7:44Speaker 1: talk ball, I think is going to really uh resonate
- 7:48Speaker 1: with Indiana fans. So I was encouraged from from that perspective.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Not sure if you want to weigh in anything from
- 7:53Speaker 1: that perspective, coach, but uh, it wasn't really a question,
- 7:56Speaker 1: but just an observation of my experience and wanted to
- 7:58Speaker 1: share it with the audience.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I couldn't agree more with the fact of talking basketball
- 8:04Speaker 2: is an important part of the program because through media
- 8:08Speaker 2: like yourself and us, if we understand stuff, and and
- 8:12Speaker 2: no coach, As a former high school coach, I didn't
- 8:14Speaker 2: like the reporters coming in after a loss or when
- 8:17Speaker 2: I mean, but you understand that's part of your job
- 8:19Speaker 2: to communicate what you want out of your program. And
- 8:23Speaker 2: some coaches do it really well, and some coaches really struggle.
- 8:26Speaker 2: And so it's good to hear that he is open
- 8:29Speaker 2: to that and comfortable in his own skin, in his
- 8:32Speaker 2: own way of communicating, because I don't think we've seen
- 8:35Speaker 2: that in the last couple of years. We had it
- 8:38Speaker 2: early with Crean, he struggled with that even down towards
- 8:41Speaker 2: the end, and then Archie and coach Woodson seemed to
- 8:44Speaker 2: have the you know, a little adverse reaction to the media.
- 8:48Speaker 2: But you know, part of what I do with bracketology
- 8:51Speaker 2: is I get to now go to games. Our name
- 8:55Speaker 2: has been accepted. Purdue in Indiana and Notre Dame Butler
- 8:59Speaker 2: all allow us to go and cover games. And you
- 9:02Speaker 2: see a wide arrange array actually of coaches and how
- 9:07Speaker 2: they talk basketball, and most of them do talk basketball,
- 9:11Speaker 2: even though that might not be the most ideal thing
- 9:13Speaker 2: that they want to do postgame, they understand that it's
- 9:16Speaker 2: a message and it was one of the things that
- 9:19Speaker 2: in the last eight years really bothered me is that
- 9:21Speaker 2: that wasn't coming from Indiana University. You weren't getting some
- 9:25Speaker 2: basketball conversation and while trying to understand the coach roll
- 9:30Speaker 2: of it as well. So I'm glad to hear that
- 9:33Speaker 2: that went well for sure.
- 9:35Speaker 1: That's one of the things I you know, obviously in
- 9:38Speaker 1: the nfans aren't aren't too keen on hearing kind words
- 9:42Speaker 1: for Purdue basketball and Matt Painter. But that's kind of
- 9:45Speaker 1: the one thing I always appreciate listening to Matt Painter
- 9:47Speaker 1: press conferences. He'll take any question, whether he likes it
- 9:51Speaker 1: or not. He may not give you the best answer,
- 9:53Speaker 1: but when you do ask a good question, I feel
- 9:55Speaker 1: like there's always a really good answer and a lot
- 9:57Speaker 1: of substance behind it. So I've always appreciated that about him,
- 10:00Speaker 1: And there's probably other coaches, but you know, it's at
- 10:03Speaker 1: the big timing tom Izzo, I think a lot of
- 10:05Speaker 1: times too, will give you a good answer. You know, again,
- 10:08Speaker 1: may not like the question. I think that's kind of
- 10:09Speaker 1: the give and take you always have as a media
- 10:11Speaker 1: member talking to these coaches. Wanted to ask you about
- 10:14Speaker 1: this roster. You know, I feel like in many ways
- 10:19Speaker 1: Tucker to Rees has been a little bit forgotten as
- 10:21Speaker 1: we talk about this team. You know, everyone's talking about Reed, Bailey,
- 10:24Speaker 1: Lamar Wilkerson, taking Connorway, some of these new guys. But
- 10:27Speaker 1: I saw a list earlier this week that I think
- 10:29Speaker 1: was the top one hundred list of college basketball players,
- 10:32Speaker 1: and the season he was I think in the top
- 10:34Speaker 1: twenty five. So that kind of tells you where he's
- 10:36Speaker 1: thought about nationally. But maybe a little bit forgotten because
- 10:39Speaker 1: it was a foregone conclusion that he was going to
- 10:41Speaker 1: come with his dad and he was injured last season.
- 10:43Speaker 1: But he kind of epitomizes what you you mentioned earlier
- 10:46Speaker 1: with the shooting piece. You know, I had a chance
- 10:48Speaker 1: to watch him a couple of times last season when
- 10:50Speaker 1: they were playing down in the Battle for Atlantis before
- 10:52Speaker 1: he got hurt, and he was taking threes from not
- 10:56Speaker 1: just from right behind the three point line, beyond NBA
- 10:59Speaker 1: range and making them he had a great game against
- 11:01Speaker 1: Arizona down there. He's a guy that I think a
- 11:04Speaker 1: lot of fans should be excited for. Just your thoughts
- 11:06Speaker 1: on on Tucker and what he can potentially bring to
- 11:08Speaker 1: this team next year with his size and his versatility
- 11:11Speaker 1: from beyond the arc.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Well, we'll talk a lot about shooting, and with Tucker,
- 11:15Speaker 2: it is shooting. The ability to shoot and have range, right,
- 11:19Speaker 2: that is something that you know Indiana has had some,
- 11:23Speaker 2: but it's been stationary shooting in the corners, playing off
- 11:26Speaker 2: double teams in the past eight years. And now you're
- 11:30Speaker 2: gonna see a variety of ways to get Tucker open.
- 11:32Speaker 2: And he understands the game, right if you watch some
- 11:35Speaker 2: of that West Virginia film, you know, if two guys
- 11:38Speaker 2: fly out at him, he understands to drop that off
- 11:41Speaker 2: with a little bounce pass or find the next guy.
- 11:44Speaker 2: So shooting is going to be number one. And and
- 11:46Speaker 2: I think people who watch Indiana basketball are going to
- 11:49Speaker 2: see shots taken from a variety of places once once
- 11:54Speaker 2: he crosses half court, and I think that's just again,
- 11:57Speaker 2: that's that's that modern basketball. And yes, I think he
- 12:01Speaker 2: has been forgotten. You know when people look and they say, well,
- 12:04Speaker 2: there's a bunch of mid major transfers that come into
- 12:07Speaker 2: this roster, so we're going to have them ninth, tenth,
- 12:09Speaker 2: eleventh or something into Big ten. But you know, basketball's
- 12:12Speaker 2: played at all levels at great skill, and you get
- 12:17Speaker 2: a best player from a mid major. But this is
- 12:19Speaker 2: a guy who played at Drake very well, and then
- 12:22Speaker 2: he went to West Virginia and played well for eight games.
- 12:26Speaker 2: So I think he's a top ten, top fifteen type
- 12:28Speaker 2: guy in college basketball. But because of all of what
- 12:31Speaker 2: you said with the injury, he's not being discussed, but
- 12:33Speaker 2: he will be someone who will be number one on
- 12:35Speaker 2: the scouting report, and so then you can play off
- 12:38Speaker 2: that with the other players too, Like you have to
- 12:40Speaker 2: guard Tucker and the actions that are going to be
- 12:43Speaker 2: run for Tucker, which then opens up a whole lot
- 12:46Speaker 2: of things for other players who are also as talented.
- 12:50Speaker 2: But the number one thing is going to be range
- 12:53Speaker 2: and shooting.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Who else maybe is you've kind of come through this
- 12:57Speaker 1: roster and I know you've got some notes, maybe some
- 13:00Speaker 1: things you want to discuss. Who else maybe caught your
- 13:02Speaker 1: eye in terms of maybe just a player that you
- 13:05Speaker 1: think is going to be pivotal to the success next year,
- 13:08Speaker 1: anyone may be flying under the radar. I'm just kind
- 13:10Speaker 1: of curious on your overall thoughts. One guy that and
- 13:13Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you want to talk about him
- 13:15Speaker 1: at all, but I think maybe flying a little bit
- 13:17Speaker 1: under it or just in terms of impact that I
- 13:19Speaker 1: wrote a story about and talked to derees about is
- 13:21Speaker 1: Connor in Right. And he isn't a guy that really
- 13:25Speaker 1: jumps off the stat sheet. He's not going to jump
- 13:27Speaker 1: off when you look at him, but you look at
- 13:29Speaker 1: his assist straight last year what he was able to do.
- 13:31Speaker 1: He may not even start. I don't think most people
- 13:33Speaker 1: were expecting him to start, but he when listening to
- 13:37Speaker 1: what the rees had to say about him, is a
- 13:38Speaker 1: guy that really understands the system and is a blue
- 13:41Speaker 1: collar type of player, is going to do the little
- 13:43Speaker 1: things that take it takes to win. So he's one
- 13:46Speaker 1: guy that has kind of stood out in my mind
- 13:49Speaker 1: as a player to watch this coming season. Who for
- 13:51Speaker 1: you are those guys and who have you maybe studied
- 13:54Speaker 1: in the offseason.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Well, let's talk point guards while you bring up and Right.
- 13:59Speaker 2: I think in Wright's that guy that everyone loves if
- 14:02Speaker 2: he's on your team, but you can't stand if he's
- 14:04Speaker 2: on the other team because he's diving, he's taking charges,
- 14:07Speaker 2: he's he's pestering that, you know, and then he makes
- 14:11Speaker 2: plays that you look at him like, how do you
- 14:13Speaker 2: make that play that assists to devirees or whatever else.
- 14:16Speaker 2: I'm like, he's a ballplayer like he's and you need
- 14:19Speaker 2: that in point guard. But you need multiple point guards.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I think Indiana struggled in the past because they've had
- 14:24Speaker 2: one and then when you have an injury or you
- 14:26Speaker 2: have something happen, now you're moving down to a wing
- 14:28Speaker 2: to be a point You know, Trey Galloway handled the basketball,
- 14:32Speaker 2: and he handled it well, but he's not a prototypical
- 14:34Speaker 2: point guard. Well, Indiana has three point guards in my opinion.
- 14:37Speaker 2: They got Connorway, Enwright and possibly the Drake kid who
- 14:41Speaker 2: can play off the ball as well. And the number
- 14:45Speaker 2: one thing for me is going to be ball pressure. Right,
- 14:48Speaker 2: So we'll talk read Bailey and the inability for rim
- 14:51Speaker 2: protection to concern that everyone has that is legit part
- 14:55Speaker 2: of your answer there is putting an extreme amount of
- 14:58Speaker 2: pressure on the ball. And you have two guys in
- 15:01Speaker 2: Connorway and Enright who are just going to be ballhawks.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And if let's say those two get the forty minutes
- 15:08Speaker 2: you don't have, you don't lapse defensively, whether you start
- 15:12Speaker 2: en Right or start Conorway, like, you can put pressure
- 15:15Speaker 2: on the ball for forty minutes, and I imagine Drake
- 15:17Speaker 2: is the same way, because as I mentioned earlier, the
- 15:19Speaker 2: prototype player is long, lanky that can guard the basketball.
- 15:24Speaker 2: And I think you have some of those that what
- 15:26Speaker 2: I broke them up into point guard wings, power forwards
- 15:28Speaker 2: and fives, and it's really positionless basketball these days. But
- 15:33Speaker 2: I love the point guards for their defensive pressure as
- 15:37Speaker 2: well as what they can do offensively. I think both
- 15:39Speaker 2: of them can get in the lane, both of them
- 15:41Speaker 2: can handle the pick and roll. Conorway not a great
- 15:43Speaker 2: three point shooter, but can score at the rim, and
- 15:45Speaker 2: he can distribute the basketball, and I think those are
- 15:49Speaker 2: keys to then get Dvrees Wilkerson the quality shooters looks
- 15:54Speaker 2: if you can do that offensively. But I am so
- 15:56Speaker 2: excited at Alex about the ball pressure that I believe
- 15:59Speaker 2: you're gonna from Connorway and Enright, and and really what
- 16:02Speaker 2: that means when you don't have the super rim protection,
- 16:05Speaker 2: how important that will be.
- 16:07Speaker 1: How concerned are you about the maybe lack of rim protection.
- 16:10Speaker 1: When you look at the roster, you obviously have Reed Bailey,
- 16:13Speaker 1: who's not a shot blocker. You have Sam Alexis, who
- 16:15Speaker 1: played some center, I guess at Florida. Before that, he
- 16:19Speaker 1: was at Chattanooga. You know he's been You look at
- 16:22Speaker 1: his kN POMP profiles listed as a center, but he's
- 16:25Speaker 1: not your prototypical big ten center that we've seen. So
- 16:31Speaker 1: you look at some of these other big ten rosters,
- 16:33Speaker 1: like a Michigan for example, They've got some absolute size
- 16:38Speaker 1: upfront and skill, and you wonder how in Indiana's gonna
- 16:41Speaker 1: match up against them. But also they're gonna have to
- 16:43Speaker 1: match up on the other end guarding Indiana. So but
- 16:46Speaker 1: but the rim protection piece, how important is that? Can
- 16:49Speaker 1: that be overcome with? As you mentioned the ball pressure
- 16:52Speaker 1: and are there just gonna be nights where inevitably Indiana
- 16:55Speaker 1: is gonna be out manned in the post and they're
- 16:56Speaker 1: just gonna have to figure out other ways to win one.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I think it's the weakness of this roster right now
- 17:02Speaker 2: is you don't have rim protection. But we we as
- 17:04Speaker 2: fans and as coaches, sometimes get caught up in the
- 17:07Speaker 2: optimal lineup we have with this roster. We have great
- 17:11Speaker 2: point guard play. We have great shooters and great wings,
- 17:14Speaker 2: and sometimes in a roster you just have to have
- 17:16Speaker 2: a weak area because if you don't, then you should
- 17:19Speaker 2: be a top five team. And hopefully that's where a
- 17:22Speaker 2: coach will get as he's recruiting a couple top seven
- 17:25Speaker 2: foot centers that I see are interested in come and visit.
- 17:28Speaker 2: So he doesn't want to play this way all the time,
- 17:31Speaker 2: but in his first year and building a roster has to.
- 17:33Speaker 2: So here's how you overcome it. You put that ball
- 17:35Speaker 2: pressure on. You'll see a lot of double teams. I
- 17:38Speaker 2: call them monsters. So forgive me if I revert back
- 17:41Speaker 2: to my coaching lingo. But you can. You can send
- 17:43Speaker 2: people from different places. You can send them baseline for
- 17:46Speaker 2: a double. You can post to post double. You can
- 17:49Speaker 2: double off of what we used to call dork doubling
- 17:52Speaker 2: the worst player. You just you you double off the
- 17:54Speaker 2: dork and the offense. And what I like is coach
- 17:58Speaker 2: Defreese has admitted that we're going to be overmatched at times.
- 18:01Speaker 2: We're gonna have to guard it in multiple ways. And
- 18:03Speaker 2: this is where I think coach Devrie, with the college background,
- 18:06Speaker 2: understands how to try to attack defensively the good offenses
- 18:10Speaker 2: and the good coaches in the Big Ten. He's going
- 18:12Speaker 2: to have a scouting report and a plan. It's not
- 18:15Speaker 2: going to be And again, I want to focus on
- 18:19Speaker 2: the positive of going forward as far as compared backwards.
- 18:23Speaker 2: But I think it's a better position to have coach
- 18:25Speaker 2: Devrees trying to make up for the lack of rim protection.
- 18:29Speaker 2: And then the other way is you're better offensively. They
- 18:31Speaker 2: got to match up with a five who's going to
- 18:34Speaker 2: dribble at someone and throw a back door cut or
- 18:37Speaker 2: pick and pop for three, although Bailey's not a super
- 18:41Speaker 2: stretch for or a dead three, so you have an
- 18:44Speaker 2: advantage on the other end if a rim protector has
- 18:47Speaker 2: to guard out on the perimeter, so ball pressure. And
- 18:51Speaker 2: then the best thing that Davreez has said for me
- 18:53Speaker 2: is too it's like, we just got to rebound to
- 18:55Speaker 2: basketball if we can rebound to basketball. So you tell
- 18:58Speaker 2: Alexis and you tell Bailey, keep the best offensive rebounders
- 19:02Speaker 2: off the glass. They may not even have to rebound.
- 19:04Speaker 2: So when you look at rebound stats next year, Bailey
- 19:07Speaker 2: and Alexis aren't getting a lot of boards, but your
- 19:09Speaker 2: Devrees and Wilkerson and Dorn and Miles. Those are guys
- 19:12Speaker 2: that are going to clean up that might be how
- 19:16Speaker 2: you know, you protect the rim by limiting second second shots.
- 19:20Speaker 2: And then the last thing Alex is it's it's a
- 19:23Speaker 2: rim and it's a rim and three game. And a
- 19:26Speaker 2: lot of teams when they played Trace Jackson Davis and
- 19:29Speaker 2: our post players would allow us to have thirty point
- 19:31Speaker 2: plays in the post and beat us because you take
- 19:34Speaker 2: away the three. So if they're going to score at
- 19:37Speaker 2: the rim on a post play, you fight like heck,
- 19:40Speaker 2: But okay, we'll trade threes for twos all day long
- 19:44Speaker 2: and win the math problem. Right. So I'd rather guard
- 19:48Speaker 2: the three and have ball pressure and not have rim
- 19:50Speaker 2: protection than have rim protection and not be able to
- 19:52Speaker 2: guard the three. So I think those are ways that
- 19:55Speaker 2: you fight that deficiency in the roster.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeah, one thing that he talked about with us when
- 20:02Speaker 1: we went I'm out with him. I didn't write anything
- 20:04Speaker 1: about this, but asked him kind of about long twos
- 20:06Speaker 1: because you know, that's been kind of a thing that
- 20:09Speaker 1: Indiana fans and quite frankly, I've kind of criticized the
- 20:14Speaker 1: last couple of years of Indiana basketball is just the
- 20:16Speaker 1: volume of long twos, and he didn't say necessarily that
- 20:20Speaker 1: he's totally against it. He more talked about situations when
- 20:25Speaker 1: those shots are being taken. You know, is it a
- 20:27Speaker 1: late shot clock situation where a guy's got to go
- 20:29Speaker 1: take that shot? Fine with that is the right guy
- 20:32Speaker 1: taking the shot, because you know, you look back at
- 20:35Speaker 1: Jalen hood Shafino, that performance he had the year at Perdue.
- 20:38Speaker 1: He was taking a ton of long twos. He was
- 20:40Speaker 1: making them, so it was a good shot, right, You
- 20:43Speaker 1: want to have the right guy taking the shots. So
- 20:46Speaker 1: you know, I think for the most part, Indiana's going
- 20:48Speaker 1: to be a team that takes a lot of threes.
- 20:49Speaker 1: They're going to try to get to the rim, but
- 20:51Speaker 1: they're still going to take some long twos. But I
- 20:53Speaker 1: think you're going to see a better organization in terms
- 20:56Speaker 1: of who's taking those shots and the situations are taking
- 20:59Speaker 1: those shots. You know, obviously, if that's what the defense
- 21:02Speaker 1: is giving you. You know, if you're getting played at
- 21:04Speaker 1: drop coverage out of a ball screen and the shots
- 21:06Speaker 1: wide open, I mean, if it's a guy that can
- 21:08Speaker 1: make it, take the shot. But absolutely, I don't think
- 21:11Speaker 1: you're gonna see a lot of situations where the balls
- 21:14Speaker 1: passed twice and there's seventeen seconds on the shot clock
- 21:17Speaker 1: and a guy's jacking up an eighteen foot shot. I
- 21:19Speaker 1: don't think that's gonna happen. So that was one interesting thing,
- 21:22Speaker 1: you know, that he talked about from a style play perspective,
- 21:25Speaker 1: you know, just going back to one thing you mentioned there.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I was also pretty encouraged by the fact that, you know,
- 21:31Speaker 1: he talked about turnovers and rebounding is kind of the
- 21:34Speaker 1: big most important things. And you know, as some people
- 21:39Speaker 1: maybe don't, you know, I get into Ken Palm way
- 21:41Speaker 1: too much. You know, the four factors. I just look
- 21:43Speaker 1: at those, and I look at the teams that win
- 21:45Speaker 1: the most games, and you know, they're obviously doing all
- 21:49Speaker 1: those things well, you know, getting to the line, limiting turnovers,
- 21:53Speaker 1: shooting percentage with a little and you know, emphasis on
- 21:57Speaker 1: the three point shot, and rebounding are all you know important.
- 22:01Speaker 1: And for him to talk about the importance of defensive
- 22:05Speaker 1: rebounding particular really kind of made me feel like they're
- 22:10Speaker 1: gonna be a team that's, you know, send the guard.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Rebounding is gonna have to be a big deal because
- 22:15Speaker 1: you've got Bailey down there. He's gonna be able to
- 22:18Speaker 1: maybe fend off, you know, a guy or two here
- 22:20Speaker 1: and there. He's gonna be oversized. The guards are really
- 22:22Speaker 1: gonna have to get down there. And that's where I
- 22:24Speaker 1: like the makeup of the roster. In terms of the wings.
- 22:27Speaker 1: They got some guys who are that six six sixty
- 22:29Speaker 1: seven six' eight range that are going to be out.
- 22:32Speaker 1: THERE i think that really helps you having having longer,
- 22:35Speaker 1: guys more athletic guys in the wing that can go
- 22:37Speaker 1: down there and in possessions with defensive. Rebounding that was
- 22:40Speaker 1: really encouraging to me as.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Well, yeah it's it's a big, thing like you finish
- 22:45Speaker 2: a defensive possession by you, know getting the. Basketball. Uh
- 22:50Speaker 2: and it is obviously it's very. Important everyone talks about,
- 22:53Speaker 2: it but do you emphasize it and and do you
- 22:57Speaker 2: emphasize ways of doing? It we you, KNOW i believe
- 23:01Speaker 2: you just keep the best offensive rebounder off the. Board
- 23:04Speaker 2: so in a scouting, report if it's the Center, bayley
- 23:07Speaker 2: just block him, out block him, out maintain your. Blockout
- 23:10Speaker 2: as you, said guard, rebounding AND i think guard rebounding
- 23:13Speaker 2: is a stat that we should look at next. Year
- 23:15Speaker 2: but you Have Dorin Miles Devrez wilkerson all in the six, five,
- 23:19Speaker 2: six six sixty seven range at the, wings AND i
- 23:22Speaker 2: think your point guards need to go, too and then
- 23:24Speaker 2: you can facilitate a break with good wing guard defensive
- 23:29Speaker 2: rebounding because you can just turn and. Go you don't
- 23:32Speaker 2: have to have an outlet. Necessarily you can break out and.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Go AND i Know indiana early said they want to
- 23:37Speaker 2: shoot in twelve seconds and get out and. Go, well
- 23:40Speaker 2: send five guys to the, glass go get, it and
- 23:42Speaker 2: then let's let's get. Out but that's that's going to
- 23:45Speaker 2: be another way that you. Offset maybe you, know you
- 23:48Speaker 2: have a post player who's scoring on, you trying different,
- 23:52Speaker 2: things but if you just they got to score a
- 23:54Speaker 2: first first, shot you, know have a high percentage on first.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Shot if they, don't and you're a good defensive rebounding,
- 24:00Speaker 2: team then you're going to be in a position to
- 24:02Speaker 2: win basketball.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Games. YEAH i, MEAN i think another thing that's really
- 24:06Speaker 1: underrated in terms of just defensive rebounding is just a
- 24:09Speaker 1: fundamental of, it, RIGHT i, mean finding a guy and
- 24:11Speaker 1: actually hitting somebody with a. BODY i, mean you, KNOW
- 24:15Speaker 1: i grew up obviously watching a lot Of big ten,
- 24:17Speaker 1: basketball AND i remember those maybe gotten away from it
- 24:22Speaker 1: a little. Bit but some of those Tom izzo teams
- 24:25Speaker 1: in the late nineties early two, thousands it wasn't that
- 24:28Speaker 1: they had the most athletic, guys it wasn't that they
- 24:30Speaker 1: had the biggest, guys but they were just monsters out
- 24:33Speaker 1: there in terms of finding somebody hitting. Them you know.
- 24:36Speaker 1: That you see those old videos of the drill where
- 24:38Speaker 1: they just put the kind of the thing over the
- 24:41Speaker 1: basket where the ball can't go, in and they got
- 24:42Speaker 1: the pads out and they're just like going out there
- 24:45Speaker 1: full combat like. Football but it is a lot, about you,
- 24:49Speaker 1: know technique and how you approach the mental aspect of.
- 24:53Speaker 1: It how bad do you want the? Ball how bad
- 24:55Speaker 1: do you want to find a guy and block them?
- 24:57Speaker 1: Out you, know it's important those, Things and not to
- 25:02Speaker 1: obviously dwell on the past or, anything BUT i think
- 25:04Speaker 1: some of those smaller details maybe you weren't emphasized as,
- 25:08Speaker 1: much and you just kind of want To maybe you
- 25:12Speaker 1: don't have as much, talent but if the talent understands
- 25:15Speaker 1: kind of the technique and the understanding of like what's
- 25:18Speaker 1: important to helping us, win you, know AND i think
- 25:20Speaker 1: those are two great things to start with taking care
- 25:23Speaker 1: of the ball and. Rebounding you can win a lot
- 25:25Speaker 1: of games just by doing those things. Consistently you get
- 25:29Speaker 1: what you.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Emphasize the keyword you mentioned there is, emphasize and the
- 25:32Speaker 2: great coaches have a way of emphasizing and getting that
- 25:35Speaker 2: emphasis to be part of the, culture part of the
- 25:38Speaker 2: play of each one of their. Teams so it's the,
- 25:40Speaker 2: drills as you, mentioned it is just the. Attitude is
- 25:43Speaker 2: all the coaches together on the same page every, day
- 25:47Speaker 2: and then do the guys accept the fact, that, YEAH
- 25:49Speaker 2: i can't just sit and watch a long. REBOUND i
- 25:51Speaker 2: gotta go OR i got to keep my guy from getting.
- 25:54Speaker 2: It it just has to be a part of what you.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Do and For DeVries to mention that early that rebounding
- 26:00Speaker 2: is going to be a key in several different ways
- 26:03Speaker 2: that he's mentioned, that especially with the lack of, SIZE
- 26:06Speaker 2: i think is going to be a key component for next.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Year in terms of the, scheduling you, KNOW i obviously
- 26:13Speaker 1: saw the. Schedule they got four high major opponents With Kansas, State, Louisville, Kentucky.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Marquette those are four pretty strong, games but haven't really
- 26:22Speaker 1: dug in as much into the by. Games you, KNOW
- 26:24Speaker 1: i wrote kind of a brief overview of who they're,
- 26:26Speaker 1: playing but not really a lot OF i don't want
- 26:30Speaker 1: to say meat on the, bone but not not a
- 26:32Speaker 1: lot of strong opponents and those obviously they need to
- 26:34Speaker 1: win those. Games but from a bracketology, perspective do you
- 26:38Speaker 1: think the mix of games is okay in terms of
- 26:41Speaker 1: what they were able to do based on the fact
- 26:43Speaker 1: that they have Twenty big ten, games gonna have a
- 26:45Speaker 1: ton of opportunities. THERE i did see some social media
- 26:48Speaker 1: comments from a couple folks just kind of questioning having
- 26:52Speaker 1: that many quote unquote by games on the, Schedule but to,
- 26:56Speaker 1: me it seemed like for year one of a coach
- 26:59Speaker 1: that's trying to stat much this, program trying to obviously
- 27:02Speaker 1: make THE ncaa, tournament it seemed like a decent mix of.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Games maybe strength to schedule in the non conference isn't
- 27:08Speaker 1: going to be you, know top one, hundred top one,
- 27:11Speaker 1: fifty but they are playing some strong games, there obviously
- 27:15Speaker 1: going on the road to Play, kentucky a couple of
- 27:17Speaker 1: neutral site, games then Having Kansas state at. Home but
- 27:20Speaker 1: overall thoughts on the schedule and maybe those those by,
- 27:24Speaker 1: games is there any reason to worry that there may
- 27:27Speaker 1: not be enough there to really help the overall strength to.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Schedule, NO i think from a bracketology, standpoint this is
- 27:34Speaker 2: a good. SCHEDULE i think this is a good, schedule
- 27:36Speaker 2: no matter if your first, year second, year or third.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Year is it a great. Schedule, No but sometimes schools
- 27:42Speaker 2: schedule great and then run into. Trouble Michigan state a
- 27:44Speaker 2: few years ago overscheduled right and had so many. Games
- 27:49Speaker 2: BUT i think it's a good schedule for a first year.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Team and the fact THAT i tend to like to
- 27:55Speaker 2: have five or six power teams on a, SCHEDULE i
- 28:00Speaker 2: think that's. Important sometimes you get that when you go
- 28:02Speaker 2: To maui or you go to your, things and then
- 28:05Speaker 2: you add two or three other games and that's how
- 28:07Speaker 2: you get to five or. Six but the schedule four
- 28:10Speaker 2: individual GAMES i think is. SOLID i think the bye
- 28:16Speaker 2: games there are four THAT i consider right now just
- 28:19Speaker 2: to be must win games that aren't really going to
- 28:21Speaker 2: help your. Resume and then depending on how they. Play
- 28:24Speaker 2: these are programs in the past that have been in
- 28:26Speaker 2: the tournament that are the mid majors that can be
- 28:28Speaker 2: good and finish like two fifty or better or two
- 28:32Speaker 2: eighty or better last year and The Ken. Palm those
- 28:35Speaker 2: in the two hundreds don't really hurt, you, Right and that's.
- 28:39Speaker 1: The ones who are the ones, sorry go, ahead who
- 28:41Speaker 1: are the ones that are actually maybe were games that'll
- 28:44Speaker 1: be worth watching or could help them.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Potentially, yeah Definitely. Milwaukee The Horizon league plays really good.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Basketball that's a game where you should win ten to.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Fifteen you can find yourself in a. Dogfight i've covered
- 28:55Speaker 2: The horizon semi finals the last two years for Del Fi,
- 28:58Speaker 2: bracketology got a second row, seat And i'll tell you,
- 29:01Speaker 2: what they can play some. Basketball they're just a notch
- 29:04Speaker 2: below the you, know the top power schools at every.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Level BUT i Think milwaukee is a game and a
- 29:10Speaker 2: program that is is a good mid Major Incarnate words
- 29:14Speaker 2: has moved upwards and they finished like two fifty something
- 29:19Speaker 2: In Ken, Palm SO i don't know what they have coming.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Back and the, rosters you, know those are the top
- 29:24Speaker 2: two by games that were Getting siena in the past
- 29:28Speaker 2: has been good from Out. East they were down a
- 29:31Speaker 2: little bit last, year but those are the three that
- 29:34Speaker 2: you want those to be in the two fifty to
- 29:35Speaker 2: three hundred range and beat. Them that'll help you as
- 29:38Speaker 2: a bracketology and then Your ALABAMA a and m's Your
- 29:41Speaker 2: Bethen Cookman lindenwood In Chicago. State those are film. Games
- 29:44Speaker 2: those are get right, games and you need those no
- 29:47Speaker 2: matter what kind of a roster you, Have but you
- 29:49Speaker 2: really need those when you have a roster that is
- 29:53Speaker 2: eleven new guys and a coach in the new you
- 29:56Speaker 2: can't schedule eleven power, schools you, know look back at
- 30:01Speaker 2: twenty thirty years, ago we were having a lot of,
- 30:03Speaker 2: those you. Know BUT i think it's a good. Schedule
- 30:07Speaker 2: it's a lot better than what happened last. Year it
- 30:10Speaker 2: Gives indiana an opportunity to win a couple of games
- 30:12Speaker 2: against power schools and then you go into your twenty
- 30:15Speaker 2: Game Big ten. SCHEDULE i think it is, good and
- 30:19Speaker 2: from a fans, PERSPECTIVE i think it's. Fantastic Kentucky Louisville
- 30:24Speaker 2: marquette here in The midwest under a coach THAT i
- 30:27Speaker 2: think is one of the best coaches in the. Country
- 30:30Speaker 2: Kansas state coming to an assembly hall is you, know not,
- 30:35Speaker 2: Local BUT i think that gives the fans a chance
- 30:38Speaker 2: to go into assembly hall and see good quality. Opponents
- 30:41Speaker 2: So i'm okay with. IT i think it's just a good,
- 30:45Speaker 2: one not a great, one but it's not detrimental to
- 30:49Speaker 2: the success of this, team which is number. One and
- 30:51Speaker 2: then obviously with the bracketology and the tournament.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Stuff one Thing i've talked about in the past is
- 30:57Speaker 1: just on some of these buy, games trying to win
- 31:00Speaker 1: the game by a little bit more Than indiana ass.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Historically is there is there any THAT i guess that's
- 31:06Speaker 1: Something i've conjured up in my mind that's. Important is
- 31:08Speaker 1: there actually any data that supports that being? Important is
- 31:11Speaker 1: it you, know when they Play ALABAMA a AND, m
- 31:13Speaker 1: if they win by eight as opposed to, Thirty is
- 31:16Speaker 1: there is there actually any long standing impact of, that
- 31:21Speaker 1: or is that maybe something that we've just kind of
- 31:24Speaker 1: taken as a talking point that maybe isn't as important
- 31:26Speaker 1: as we once.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Thought it's important because it's. Off it's when you Play
- 31:31Speaker 2: ALABAMA a AND. M it's. Off it's a chance to
- 31:33Speaker 2: get your offensive efficiency up and your defensive efficiency numbers,
- 31:37Speaker 2: better and then that spread helps you in the. Net
- 31:41Speaker 2: so you don't want to Beat ALABAMA a AND m
- 31:44Speaker 2: by five or. Six if you, do you want to
- 31:47Speaker 2: offset it by big, wins like big wins will mean
- 31:49Speaker 2: more than a smaller victories against teams you should. Dominate
- 31:54Speaker 2: so if you have a couple of games where you
- 31:56Speaker 2: only win eight to ten, points but you go and
- 31:58Speaker 2: you Beat, Louisville, Marquette Kansas, state you're three and one
- 32:01Speaker 2: in that, stretch that margin of victory is maybe a
- 32:04Speaker 2: seed line or. Two maybe that depended on the clump
- 32:09Speaker 2: of teams that would be around where it gets where
- 32:12Speaker 2: you get in troubles where you don't have those wins
- 32:14Speaker 2: and you play closer games than the. Schedule now your
- 32:18Speaker 2: resume falls to a little bit lower level when it
- 32:22Speaker 2: comes to comparing two teams on the. Bubble but, yeah
- 32:25Speaker 2: you want to win by decent. Margins those by games
- 32:28Speaker 2: The Milwaukee INCARNATE cn if they're middle, games if you,
- 32:32Speaker 2: will you want to win those by ten to fifteen
- 32:35Speaker 2: keep it in that, margin if not. More but that
- 32:38Speaker 2: just represents good offense and good, defense which you need
- 32:41Speaker 2: to build up that mathematical formula as far as data
- 32:44Speaker 2: to show, historically if you lose two games or play
- 32:48Speaker 2: two games under your expected, victory you're going TO i
- 32:51Speaker 2: don't have, that but it's all part of you want
- 32:55Speaker 2: to build a good mathematical resume. Too with your offense
- 32:59Speaker 2: and defensive numbers and padding that against some of the
- 33:03Speaker 2: weaker ones. Helps but it, also you, Know, alex strength
- 33:05Speaker 2: of schedule matters. Too you're Playing, Kentucky, Louisville, Marquette Kansas.
- 33:08Speaker 2: State that's good as some of these people can. Pay.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Butler Big east has been heavily criticized this. Year, Butler
- 33:16Speaker 2: i'm trying to fit who else has really weak non
- 33:20Speaker 2: conference schedules right? Now, well they'll pad that mathematical, formula
- 33:23Speaker 2: but they won't have those big. GAMES i Know butler was.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Criticized i'm trying to think who. Else it Wasn't marquette
- 33:29Speaker 2: Or Saint, john's but there were a couple of teams
- 33:33Speaker 2: that really caught it on social media because of the bracketology. Piece,
- 33:37Speaker 2: yeah you're gonna win, games and you're gonna have that mathematical,
- 33:40Speaker 2: formula but you're not gonna have a good strength to
- 33:41Speaker 2: schedule and you're not gonna have quad one Or quad
- 33:43Speaker 2: two wins or losses even are better than. That so,
- 33:47Speaker 2: yeah this schedule is pretty, GOOD i, think AND i
- 33:50Speaker 2: think it shows again that direction AS i talked about,
- 33:53Speaker 2: earlier that Coach devrees is going in all areas of.
- 33:56Speaker 2: BASKETBALL i think it's a good step and going in
- 34:00Speaker 2: the right.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Direction you guys get obviously super in depth on all things,
- 34:04Speaker 1: bracketology especially like late in the process when you're coming
- 34:07Speaker 1: through those resumes trying to pick the teams for the
- 34:10Speaker 1: last couple of. Spots how often does that come up
- 34:13Speaker 1: with your discussions with students of like what a non
- 34:17Speaker 1: conference schedule was for a, Team like are you comparing
- 34:19Speaker 1: that or is it just simply you're looking at who
- 34:22Speaker 1: they beat VERSUS i, mean are you more likely to
- 34:25Speaker 1: give the benefit of the doubt of a team that
- 34:27Speaker 1: really challenged themselves in the non conference and played a
- 34:29Speaker 1: tougher schedule and maybe took some losses versus a team
- 34:32Speaker 1: that maybe padded with some empty calories and kind of
- 34:35Speaker 1: just scheduled. Wins i'm kind of, curious like how often
- 34:39Speaker 1: that comes up when you're having those discussions and maybe
- 34:41Speaker 1: when you're talking about the last two or three teams
- 34:44Speaker 1: to make it in the field.
- 34:46Speaker 2: One it depends on what the committee will emphasize each.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Year but when we got started in twenty fifteen twenty,
- 34:51Speaker 2: sixteen non conference strength of schedule was, huge and then
- 34:54Speaker 2: that's been debated whether it should be total strength of
- 34:57Speaker 2: schedule with these mega conferences and the twenty game, conference
- 35:01Speaker 2: whether that should be more in, Consideration why is this
- 35:03Speaker 2: your non? Conference, well you control your non, conference AND
- 35:07Speaker 2: i think the committee is right in saying you played
- 35:10Speaker 2: teams that were, tough you went one in, three but
- 35:13Speaker 2: you played them as opposed to you played eleven ten
- 35:15Speaker 2: by games and only one game against someone. ELSE i
- 35:18Speaker 2: kind of like that as a fan and a. Bracketologist
- 35:21Speaker 2: but to answer your, question we talk about it a.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Lot if it comes, down you, know we look at
- 35:27Speaker 2: trends and trends or trends until they're no longer. Trends
- 35:30Speaker 2: but the last team's. In if you have a three
- 35:33Speaker 2: hundred or worse non conference strength to, schedule you're really
- 35:36Speaker 2: you better have something to offset. That you, Know rutgers
- 35:40Speaker 2: a few years ago had, that but they had four
- 35:42Speaker 2: or five top. Wins so but, yes we talk about
- 35:46Speaker 2: non conference strength of schedule a lot At Delphi. BRACKETOLOGY
- 35:49Speaker 2: i think the committee looks at it as, well and
- 35:53Speaker 2: maybe more of a tie breaker situation between a seed
- 35:55Speaker 2: line or. Something you saw even at the Top alex
- 36:00Speaker 2: some of the big twelve teams kind of skimmed the
- 36:02Speaker 2: or rigg the playing field by playing teams they could
- 36:06Speaker 2: beat big margins and build up their net and they
- 36:10Speaker 2: could have been maybe a two seed and end up
- 36:11Speaker 2: getting a three or a four. Seed SO i think
- 36:13Speaker 2: you see some adjustment at the top level too if
- 36:16Speaker 2: you don't have a strong non conference. Schedule SO i
- 36:19Speaker 2: think it is a lot more important than people. Think
- 36:23Speaker 2: and that's where the four games That indiana HAS i
- 36:25Speaker 2: think puts them in a good position come committee time
- 36:29Speaker 2: to be talked about in that.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Area, yeah it's always interesting to. Me like some of these,
- 36:33Speaker 1: Programs i'm sure they have people just sitting around trying
- 36:36Speaker 1: to like study the nets for the past couple of
- 36:38Speaker 1: years and figure out ways to game the. System you
- 36:41Speaker 1: mentioned the thing with The Big. Twelve is there anything
- 36:42Speaker 1: else you've kind of noticed with that over the times
- 36:46Speaker 1: since you've been doing this with in terms of programs
- 36:49Speaker 1: trying to figure out maybe efficiencies and different things to
- 36:52Speaker 1: try to boost their overall computer, Numbers and is there
- 36:55Speaker 1: anything do you think the committee you mentioned with The
- 37:01Speaker 1: Big twelve last year what some of these teams, did
- 37:04Speaker 1: and maybe the committee saw through that based on kind
- 37:06Speaker 1: of what you're saying a little bit by going down
- 37:08Speaker 1: the seed line or. Two do you think there's a
- 37:11Speaker 1: good like checks and balances in between these people that
- 37:13Speaker 1: are these programs eye that are trying to gain the
- 37:15Speaker 1: system and The committee actually being able to kind of
- 37:18Speaker 1: decipher what's real and what's not when they look at these.
- 37:21Speaker 2: TEAMS i do The Mountain. WEST a few years, ago
- 37:24Speaker 2: all of us bracketologists missed on The Mountain west because
- 37:27Speaker 2: they had a lot of quad one wins And quad two,
- 37:29Speaker 2: wins but they all came in conference and what we
- 37:31Speaker 2: missed was that in that particular, year no one really
- 37:35Speaker 2: played a good non conference schedule and it drove up their,
- 37:38Speaker 2: nets and then when they played each other they got
- 37:41Speaker 2: a lot of. Wins, well the committee recognized, that and
- 37:45Speaker 2: they were all, eight, nine ten, seeds and we had
- 37:48Speaker 2: some of them in six seeds seven seeds based on
- 37:50Speaker 2: quad one in. Comparison SO i am one of the
- 37:54Speaker 2: bracketologists THAT i think the committee does a great. JOB
- 37:57Speaker 2: i really. Do AND i know on Selection sunday everyone
- 38:01Speaker 2: screams and yells at who was left out and who.
- 38:03Speaker 2: WASN'T i, think you, know every Year i'll probably have
- 38:06Speaker 2: two or three, decisions AND i would question a little,
- 38:09Speaker 2: bit but almost every. TIME i question WHEN i go
- 38:11Speaker 2: back and look at the, RESUME i didn't see. THAT
- 38:14Speaker 2: i didn't see. That and they have thousands of more
- 38:18Speaker 2: pages of information THAN i. Do AND i think we
- 38:20Speaker 2: do a good. Job And andy does a good job
- 38:24Speaker 2: as well with the two of us in, bracketology but
- 38:27Speaker 2: we don't have all of the, information AND i think
- 38:29Speaker 2: it's just you, know same with college football catching a
- 38:32Speaker 2: lot of. Grief those guys do a great job with
- 38:35Speaker 2: a lot of. Information, so, yes they're aware of those
- 38:38Speaker 2: teams that play ten games and win by thirty and
- 38:42Speaker 2: so their net is. HIGHER i think they do take
- 38:45Speaker 2: that into. Consideration and there's some new formulas now With
- 38:49Speaker 2: torvik and everything else being considered in the room that
- 38:52Speaker 2: can counterbalance one metric being higher than the. Other they
- 38:58Speaker 2: are more than aware of those, differences AND i think
- 39:02Speaker 2: that's what makes, uh you, know the tournaments so.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Special, YEAH i was real happy last year when they
- 39:07Speaker 1: brought In tordick's. Rankings you, KNOW i agree with. YOU
- 39:11Speaker 1: i think they. Do they do a thankless, job, right
- 39:13Speaker 1: because you're someone's always going to be, upset someone's always
- 39:16Speaker 1: going to be screwed when the bracket came. Out someone's
- 39:19Speaker 1: always going to complain and, say there was you, know
- 39:21Speaker 1: a conference commissioner that was on this thing and they
- 39:24Speaker 1: got their team in like last year With North. Carolina you,
- 39:26Speaker 1: know the whole conversation about. That but, again it's an impossible.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Job but you're never going to put out a perfect,
- 39:33Speaker 1: bracket so you just do the best you. Can BUT
- 39:35Speaker 1: i also think the more we can bring in smart
- 39:39Speaker 1: people that have made these computer formulas and bring those
- 39:42Speaker 1: into the equation to give them more information to make
- 39:44Speaker 1: an informed. DECISION i would never want to see it
- 39:46Speaker 1: go the way of let's let a computer pick the complete,
- 39:49Speaker 1: bracket BECAUSE i think that takes some of the fun
- 39:51Speaker 1: out of. It SO i think it's a good. Mix, Again,
- 39:55Speaker 1: also if you're one of those teams that's on the
- 39:58Speaker 1: on the, bubble who do you have to blame but?
- 40:02Speaker 1: Yourself just win more games and we wouldn't be having this.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Conversation that's kind of my. Argument every, year you know,
- 40:07Speaker 1: exact there'll be things that that kind of irk me
- 40:10Speaker 1: too WHEN i see the bracket come out and. Everything but,
- 40:13Speaker 1: again you, know there's sixty eight. Teams this is kind
- 40:15Speaker 1: of the last THING i wanted to talk to you
- 40:16Speaker 1: about because it seems like inevitable at this. Point i'm hoping,
- 40:22Speaker 1: not but but maybe it. Is this whole idea of.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Expansion where do you come down on. THAT i, mean
- 40:28Speaker 1: we do have now we are adding more teams every
- 40:31Speaker 1: year To division. One THERE'S i think three hundred and
- 40:34Speaker 1: sixty five teams, now so a lot more than WHEN
- 40:38Speaker 1: i guess we started out with sixty four AND i
- 40:40Speaker 1: went to sixty. EIGHT i, mean do you have a
- 40:41Speaker 1: problem with seventy two seventy? Six is there a point
- 40:45Speaker 1: where you, say all, right that's too? Many you, know
- 40:50Speaker 1: we were watering down the. Product but you, Know i'm
- 40:53Speaker 1: not in favor of, expansion BUT i do, think you,
- 40:57Speaker 1: know if they had a couple more, teams it's not
- 40:59Speaker 1: the end of the world.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Either i'm an old, soul so SO i don't like
- 41:05Speaker 2: a lot of changes in things That i'm really passionate.
- 41:07Speaker 2: About So I'm i'm against, Expansion BUT i also see
- 41:11Speaker 2: the BENEFITS i would be for expansion if you allowed
- 41:15Speaker 2: some Non power, five power, six how many power conferences
- 41:19Speaker 2: in college basketball you want to count now some opportunity
- 41:23Speaker 2: for some smaller, Schools but with the money, situation it's
- 41:26Speaker 2: it's likely if you add, teams it's going to go
- 41:28Speaker 2: to your power, four power five because of the money.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Factor is it really gonna and then even you, know
- 41:35Speaker 2: it's just harder now with the formula of knowing Schedules
- 41:39Speaker 2: Indiana state anymore or or some of those. Teams but
- 41:43Speaker 2: if you could Guarantee Indiana state a couple of years,
- 41:45Speaker 2: ago not this, layer but the year they went to
- 41:47Speaker 2: the N It, final a team like that getting into the,
- 41:50Speaker 2: TOURNAMENT i would really be for. Expansion we in that
- 41:55Speaker 2: YEAR i did put on our Del fi bracketology website
- 41:57Speaker 2: and it's still. There if anyone wants to go dig
- 42:00Speaker 2: out a SEVENTY i think as seventy two or seventy
- 42:03Speaker 2: sixteen bracket based on what the committee had and there's
- 42:08Speaker 2: some interesting. Matchups and WHAT i proposed was if you do,
- 42:13Speaker 2: that then you the benefit of that on the back,
- 42:17Speaker 2: end if you play condensed like fifteen and sixteen seeds
- 42:21Speaker 2: into more playing, games you have more winners that are.
- 42:25Speaker 2: SMALL i, MEAN i look at the first four In
- 42:27Speaker 2: dayton and those first two games Between ALABAMA a AND
- 42:30Speaker 2: m and someone. Else someone. Wins they're, excited, right they
- 42:33Speaker 2: get a chance to. Win, well you actually give more
- 42:36Speaker 2: of those small schools a chance to. Win if you
- 42:38Speaker 2: play on A, tuesday they get to go to THE ncaa. Tournament,
- 42:41Speaker 2: yes it's a quick, turnaround but they get to win
- 42:43Speaker 2: and then they get to advance and then all you,
- 42:46Speaker 2: know at the twelve seed, line it would be all
- 42:48Speaker 2: the at larges that would be. Playing but play them
- 42:51Speaker 2: At iconic, venues, right play them At, dayton play them
- 42:57Speaker 2: at Hinkle lestra in The east right when you have
- 43:04Speaker 2: and then you have A tv amount of games twelve
- 43:08Speaker 2: on That tuesday And wednesday night or six whatever you
- 43:10Speaker 2: would break it, up it'd be six GAMES i think
- 43:13Speaker 2: each night that's gonna. Benefit SO i don't want that
- 43:18Speaker 2: and don't think that, really you, KNOW i don't want
- 43:20Speaker 2: to see a FIFTEENTH sec team out of sixteen in the.
- 43:25Speaker 2: TOURNAMENT i do think that there are some ways that
- 43:28Speaker 2: they can still hold on. To you know what IS
- 43:33Speaker 2: i think it's just really awesome about the nca. Tournament
- 43:35Speaker 2: if they want to add add some, TEAMS i think
- 43:39Speaker 2: seventy six would be the max number though THAT i
- 43:43Speaker 2: would And i'm gonna love it no matter. What it's
- 43:45Speaker 2: what we, Do Alex, Right i'm not gonna give up
- 43:48Speaker 2: college basketball if they come out and say seventy two
- 43:50Speaker 2: or seventy. SIX i didn't give up college football a
- 43:53Speaker 2: major league. BASEBALL i didn't necessarily like all those expansion playoff,
- 43:57Speaker 2: expansions AND i still passionate have four TVs down here
- 44:00Speaker 2: in the Man, cave so we'll still love the. Sport
- 44:04Speaker 2: would love to see it at sixty. Eight BUT i
- 44:06Speaker 2: do think there's some ways that you can really keep the.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Magic you, Know Paul, pavilion if you want a venue
- 44:13Speaker 2: Out west or The, pit some iconic venues incorporate things like.
- 44:18Speaker 2: That if you're going to expand the.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Tournament, yeah the one THING i would really like to see,
- 44:24Speaker 1: happen regardless of whether there's expansion or no, expansion is
- 44:27Speaker 1: get rid of the sixteen seeds that won their league
- 44:32Speaker 1: and earned a spot in the actual. Bracket get rid
- 44:34Speaker 1: of having them play in the first. FOUR i think
- 44:37Speaker 1: you should take more of The for, ONE i think
- 44:40Speaker 1: it'd be BETTER tv BECAUSE i think more people are
- 44:42Speaker 1: going to. WATCH i mean nothing against you, know these smaller,
- 44:46Speaker 1: schools but usually when the first four games come, On
- 44:48Speaker 1: i'll tune in maybe to the end of that sixteen
- 44:51Speaker 1: versus sixteen, game and then watch The Power conference teams
- 44:54Speaker 1: play later or you, Know i'd rather see those. Teams
- 44:58Speaker 1: if you won your, league you should be in the.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Bracket you shouldn't have to play into the. Bracket SO
- 45:04Speaker 1: i don't know if that'll ever, change BUT i do
- 45:06Speaker 1: think that that's one week THAT i would like to.
- 45:08Speaker 2: See, yeah and there's you, know there's many ways to
- 45:13Speaker 2: look at. It it's just a good. Thing the amount
- 45:16Speaker 2: of money that has influenced college athletics in the last
- 45:20Speaker 2: five or six, years and and some of it's good
- 45:22Speaker 2: paying athletes and all of, that but just, money with
- 45:25Speaker 2: these television contracts and. EVERYTHING i get. It it drives.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Things but let's keep the nature of what we love
- 45:33Speaker 2: with the game of, basketball which is the college. Tournament
- 45:37Speaker 2: keep it as as much as you possibly. Can if
- 45:39Speaker 2: you are going to expand.
- 45:40Speaker 1: It, well, coach thanks for making the. Time hopefully didn't
- 45:45Speaker 1: keep you off the golf course here on This friday.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Morning i'm not sure what you got scheduled for the
- 45:50Speaker 1: rest of the, day BUT i hope you have a good.
