Transcript
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Cover 4.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: If you're a Section 4 football fan, this is your podcast.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I'm Coach Smith, your host.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Buckle your chin strapped, put your mouthpiece in, and tie your cleats in double knots.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Welcome to week 8, Game of the Week.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: This is the final week of the 2024 regular season.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Wow, the season is flown.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: When you really enjoy something, time seems to fly.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Today I will analyze one of Section 4's most anticipated matchups.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And during the Ask Coach Smith segment, I will explain the kickoff, fair catch, free kick choice.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: This game of the week is between the only two remaining undefeated teams who both sit at the top of Division III.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Of course, I'm talking about Maine Endwell and Owego.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: There's a lot going on in Owego on game night.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: This is Senior Recognition Night where Awego will honor 19 seniors and the festivities begin at 5:30.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: This is also a pink out game, and please wear pink to show your support for breast cancer awareness.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Cancer is such a disgusting disease.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: We need to keep fighting to eradicate it.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: On another note, Owego has one of the best snack shacks in Section 4.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And believe me, I know because when I coached there, I visited the shack more than a few times.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And now to the game.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: The Maiden Adwell Spartans, currently ranked number one in New York State, travel west to take on the Owego Riverhawks, who are currently ranked number 10 in New York State.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: That game will be Friday evening, November 1st at 7 p.m.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: at Christy J.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Valvo Memorial Stadium in Owego, New York.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: This is a rematch of last season's Section 4 Division III Championship won by the Maine Anwell Spartans.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Now for a few of the scoreboard numbers to be aware of.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Maine Anwell comes in at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in their division.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Last week they defeated Norwich 42 to 14.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: They scored 347 points and given up 125.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: That's positive 222 points in their favor.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: They averaged 43 points per game and allow 16 points on average per game.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: So their average margin of victory is 27 points, and they average 3.9 touchdowns per game.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Some of the student athletes that are definitely going to have an effect on the outcome of this game are Preston Auker, Vinnie Mancini, Landon Rolo, Jaden Branch, and Tyler Matthews, just to name a few.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Now over for the Uego Riverhawks.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: They committed 7-0 and 4-0 in the division.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Last week they won on a forfeit with Johnson City.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: They've scored 270 points and allowed 52.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: That's right, only 52 points all season, and the closest one to them is Waverly with 72.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: So that's a positive 218 points in the Uego Riverhawks' favor.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: They averaged 39 points per game and averaged only giving up seven points per game.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Their average margin of victory is 32 points, and they averaged four and a half touchdowns per game.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Student athletes to watch for the Riverhawks are Jack Bushbaums, Joe Palladino, Elijah Lewis, Conlin Taylor, and Patrick Palmer.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: What I feel is some of the keys to this game, and again, it always begins with football fundamentals, blocking, tackling, and controlling the line of scrimmage.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: To win, both teams must control the line of scrimmage and run the ball and stop the run.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: I think this will come down to how well the defense plays, specifically the Owego defense.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And just to review some of the numbers for Owigo, which are very impressive, again, they've only given up 52 points all season, and they average our opponents average seven points per game.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Now I want to go over and give you a review of the Class B, Division III playoff format.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: The top four teams will make the playoffs and be seeded based on their record against Class B Division III competition.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: The fourth seed will play at the first seed, and the third seed will play at the second seed.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: The winners will play at a championship site selected by the Section 4 Football Committee.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: The winner of this game will host the semifinal game.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Now ask Coach Smith.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: There seems to be some confusion surrounding fair catching a kickoff and the choice associated with that to attempt a free kick.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: This kick can be a place kick or a drop kick, and the opposing team must be at least ten yards beyond the ball before the kick.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Here is a slight twist that might cause the some confusion.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: A team executes the fair catch of a kickoff but decides against the free kick.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Once there is a live ball play, meaning the ball is actually put in play, the team loses the right to a free kick.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: But if there is a dead ball foul, the team can choose to do a free kick.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: For example, if the defense jumps off sides before the ball is put in play, the offense can change their mind and free kick from the spot after the penalty enforcement.
