- 0:00SPEAKER_02: I'm not special.
- 0:01SPEAKER_02: I stayed when it got hard.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: I stayed when I didn't see the results right away.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: I stayed when nobody was there.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: I stayed when nobody was there to cheer for me.
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: I stayed when it looked scary and hard.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Welcome back everyone to the People Run podcast.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Today's an interesting one, right?
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: Today we have Aizhan.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Today on the episode, she is a civil engineer who's also very recently trained for High Rocks World.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Had a crazy year last year, which we'll get into running a three and a half marathon and a few other races.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: But she didn't start with sports, and that's kind of where I want to start, Aijan.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the podcast.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: How are you today?
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having me.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: It's a little busy, but we are here.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: We are grooving.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Making it happen.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Making it happen another day.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Walk me through that.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: So you're training for worlds right now.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: You didn't grow up with sports.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Um, how did you get to want to compete to worlds and someone who didn't even grow up with sports now competing at such a high level?
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: Well, if you want me to go all the way in the back, in the start, I'm from Turkey and I didn't grow up in a culture that people value sports, or you don't see people are fit or taking the fitness serious.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: So I never kind of have like a deep interest because it wasn't part of the culture.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: I yeah, until I moved to States.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, I tried to go to the gym like a few times, but it always fell true.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: But then I moved to States and every corner had a gym, and it was$10, you know, Planet Fitness.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: It was$10.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: It was stupid for me not to go at that point.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: And I started going casually, but again, it didn't stick.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: And then I moved to California for my master's from Chicago, and everybody is so fit.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: I'm looking so good.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, what is the secret?
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Everybody lifts.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, got it.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: But I was still not ready.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: And COVID happened, and everything became online, and I had so much time and I didn't know what to do.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: And I was really struggling with loneliness at that time, and it took a while to get over that.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Um, and then Peloton made their app free for three months.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: I remember so well, and I'm like, probably this is the first time I'm admitting that.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: I'm so grateful for that company because it was free, and I was still a student, and I just put my AirPods on and went for like two-mile run.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: It was incredibly hard, but it was so nice listening to someone that I was running with.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: And I thought I was gonna die.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: I didn't, and I kind of enjoyed it, and instead of going to the gym or lifting weights, running was so much easier in a sense, because I really didn't think that I could do wrong, just like one step in front of the other, and I I'm like, I I can just walk fast.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: This is literally where I started from.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, I will I will try for 10 minutes and I will just walk very slow.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: And then because it because I didn't die right in the first round, I want to go back to it.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: And I actually started enjoying and I started having the endorphins, and I quickly my body responded.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: In a month, I was able to I was able to hold longer and faster somewhat, and I'm like, oh, I can see the progress, and it motivated me to go back more because at first I didn't have any pressure on myself.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna go out there and see what I can do.
- 3:53SPEAKER_02: And I continued running and I ran and ran and ran.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Then I wanted to become faster.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: Then probably I saw it somewhere on social media or something that I figured that I need to lift to run faster, and this is how I started lifting.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: And from that point, running and lifting come to hand in hand for me.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: And I loved both.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: And eventually I showed up again and again, week after week, with consistency, and then that that was my lifestyle.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I guess I was 27 when I ran my first mile ever, and I was nearly 28.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: The first time I actually saw whole at Dumble.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: You were inspired, I guess, by the it sounds like the whole LA, everyone's fitness, and and seeing gyms everywhere in America.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: I think so.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, you are a product of your of your environments, right?
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: And although I was inspired by that, it that didn't really stick for me for two, three years.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: It took a while because I was still working at the restaurant, serving alcohol.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: That means that I wanted to drink alcohol.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: It just like I was somewhere between trying my best, and once I actually fully transition into engineering and having like a day job, and being away from that scene a little bit helped me to focus more on my health.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: And as I seen the outcome of it, like progression, I was more motivated to go in and you're seeing results and stuff, yeah, for sure.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Did you have any thoughts?
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, coming from Turkey where it wasn't as fit and the fitness lifestyle wasn't such a thing, like who did you go to for inspiration or or learning even a plank?
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm kind of a nerd.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: I love reading, I love searching.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: So it was a lot of self-search.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: And after running about two years, I was finally ready to do my first half marathon and I did my own schedule, I did my own programming.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: I read a lot and I looked to sample ones and I looked into what I need to improve.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: And I remember when I was in my internship that I prepared a 12-week, 12-week, I think it was, yeah, I prepared like three months, 12-week day by day, everywhere cards, including my lifts.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: And I put on a spreadsheet, and then I tracked what I actually did and how I felt.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: And that was my first time training for a health marathon.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, so very detailed.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: You had a whole spreadsheet with effort and everything.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, any charts and that kind of fun stuff?
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: No, I didn't go that much.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: But also, I think once you put your head to a direction along the way, you meet people who inspire and you learn from them.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: And I started going to gyms and started make like at first when I was going to the gym, I was so insecure and I was so shy, just so like, and then as I go more and more seeing the similar faces, I started saying hi, I started talking to them, and it helped me to make friends that way.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: And then I was always I was always open about that.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: Hey, I'm I started lifting, like I'm new in new to lifting, and I'm not sure if I'm doing this correct.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: And I would ask people, and you'll be surprised how informative and helpful people are.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Jim commented, they want you to succeed.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: You know, people who succeed, people who are doing this for a while and good at it, they will tell you everything you need.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: So this is how I like, and I was good at like watching people too.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh yeah, maybe I should try.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, this way, that way, just keep showing up, talking to people, having open conversations, just like I think some people come with a little bit of ego.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, I got this.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: I figured out.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: I'm like, ah no, you didn't, you know.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: So I think those things helped, and eventually I learned the actual ways to do it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: And I actually got my certifications for CPT, running coach, nutrition coach a couple years ago because I knew that this is what I am going to do moving forward.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Like this is half of my life now.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: And yeah, then I started going to the rooms that really challenge me.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: I started running with people that really challenged me.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: And this is the way I got faster, I got hungry, I wanted to do more, and seeing a woman doing incredible things, lifting heavier, running so fast.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh, if she can, there's a possibility I can.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: And I put myself into those like uncomfortable positions, tried for like tried for harder things to see if I'm capable.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: And I always came out better than I expected.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: And that was my proof that I can do hard stuff, and this is how I built confidence and just it just stacked over years, you know, nothing happened overnight.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: I feel like I'm saying the stuff that you will hear everywhere, but this is the reality of it.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: Nothing happens overnight, little things stacks over over time, and then you get the results, and then this is how I ended up in the marathon finish line or got a qualifier spot for the high rock's world championship.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Did you ever think in those early years, you know, 27, 28, first dumbbell, first two-mile run, that you were gonna start becoming an athlete and competing in high rocks at such a high level.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: I sometimes still think to myself, like, hey, you are doing this.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Like, you are doing this.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely not.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: Absolutely not.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: I remember being so scared of half marathon, it was the biggest steal of my entire life.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: How I'm gonna do it.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Like, it looked like a big mountain that I could like never climb, but I'm taking steps, one step after another, then I was there.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: I was there.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what about the weights?
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: I see often a lot of stuff you share is lift, some people lift light weights, but you eventually got to the heavy weights.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: What was that like for you?
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: And that was a big part of your transformation as well, like getting to the heavy weights and not being intimidated by it.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, I think I was lucky to have women around me that can actually move some weights, and I'm like, oh, maybe I can too.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: I should try.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: And that happened, you know.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Um even sometimes like even still, sometimes I feel like imposter, but when you get the results, you want to do more, it just clicks at some point, and you know that if it's enough for you can get there.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: So you can progress at all times.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: During that time when you had all the people around you helping you get there, was it more about fitness or was it more about like changing who you were as a person?
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: I think it started as a fitness and then it just spreads my entire life.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it takes over, yeah, yeah.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: And then your community becomes your gym, your friends, your close friends, you meet them through a gym, then you go to uh vacations for races, you know.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Which which I'll love it, I wouldn't change for a thing.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: I often uh find myself convincing uh the girlfriend, like, hey, you know, we can go here in Europe or here, I'm gonna do this race, but then after so we can have fun, yeah.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Race dance forever.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's one of the one of my favorite things for sure.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I will go back to your question about like lifting.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Um don't think that you got it all figured out, you probably didn't, and be open to feedback, you know.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: I I appreciate my coach so much.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Um, I started squatting on my own, barbell squats.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: For years, I had the wrong pattern and I was in like good morning squats, you know what it is, it's just like a leg dominant people usually too.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, oh no, it's just my body shape.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: I can never go that low.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: It's just like never gonna happen.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: And I was very stubbornized, but self-convinced that this is how it's gonna go.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: And so funny, I fixed that in the last six months just recently.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: Now I know I am doing the proper squat despite my length, my leg length, despite it.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: I was making excuses because I think it was easier, and that pattern already like changing a pattern took a while.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: So I think just open, be open the feedback when you are new.
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: Don't think that people are trying to come get you.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: It's not it, you know, and just just be open to feedback and nail down the form first.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: We do a lot of ego lifting to go heavier, we will we will give up on the form, but long term that will hurt you more.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: How do you prevent that from happening in your own training, you know?
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: Because you have a lot of races and stuff, so you can't do that often, otherwise you won't be able to compete.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you prevent that while training?
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: I make sure that I have the proper form.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's and I think give yourself reality check when it's needed.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Sometimes like, no, it's okay, I got it.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it's not okay, and you have to face with it and you have to work on it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: So for my role bowls I wouldn't able to go below 90.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I got away for as long as I could until a Vegas race, which wasn't a long time ago.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I ended up doing doing 127 rollbowls because my judge was not giving me the bowl, uh the the graps, because I was not going low enough, and he didn't tell me anything.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: I thought that this the uh what is that the sensor.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: I thought the sensor is not working, and I was so frustrated.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: I was about to fight with my judge because it doesn't, he doesn't tell me anything.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: It's a lot station, I'm going for PR, which I didn't get because 27 extra robos.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: And I was so frustrated, and I ended up doing 127 robos.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: After that race, I'm like, I am never having a room for question if I was low enough or not.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: That never will be the question.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: I am going to like until I hit the ground.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: So I started working on that form, changed many things that I thought were working for me.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: And now, if you see my like latest videos, even this morning, I posted one on my story.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: There's no question, it's blown idea.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: There's no question.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: What sort of tweaks did you do to uh fix the fix the form?
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: Uh had feedback from my coach, watched videos, uh, watched some YouTube, some Instagram videos.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Uh the glutes might be a little higher.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: So I tightened my um my elbows, and the wall ball, the ball always hits my chin or lips, and I very intimate moments with the balls, I would say, you know.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I failed, failed, picked up again, failed, picked up again, failed, picked up again until I didn't fail.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: So okay.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Walk me through this, practice, practice.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, for sure.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Walk me through a typical day of yours.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: Obviously, you're a civil engineer, it's hard work.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: You gotta wake up early.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: Um, you were mentioning you have a long commute now.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you piece it all together?
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is all new to me.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's happening in the last two months, and I tried to go work out after work and it didn't work out.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: Um I will have a headache during the workout, come home, eat late, and then the slip is like messed up after that eating weight.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: So I had to make adjustments and I started waking up.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: Love, I wake up without an alarm, 4:45, and I'm at the gym, 5:30, get my workout done for an hour, and then I come to LA for another hour.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: I'm at work at 8 and I live work like 4:30, 5.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: Some days I go running after work.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: So, because sometimes I I I get to do, I have to do like double sessions to get my work done so I can actually take a day off.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Um then drive back home, eat dinner, go to bed.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: That's pretty much it for five days.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Um, but the weekends are nice.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: I guess like before when I had a lighter work week, I didn't appreciate the weekends as much.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: But right now, when it's Friday, I'm like, let's go.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, totally relate to that when the weekend comes.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh, we get the big workouts and enjoy the weekend.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: I think it helps so much that my boyfriend also does high racks, and all my close friends are somewhat like into fitness.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: So when we get together, we go work out together, we go for walks, we go for bike rides.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: It's just like it's always something active, and it wasn't like that before, you know, just over time as you evolve, your your friendship group evolves too.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it also doesn't compete with what you like doing anyway, because you guys are all competing in higher arcs, so it's fun anyway.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so my best friend, she's a bodybuilder, she was she was doing class with two.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: Now that she's also uh interested in higher arcs, and she competed a few times.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: So this morning we worked out together as a partner, as a team, and then we had breakfast, so easy.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: When uh you mentioned like uh boyfriend also competes.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Like, do you guys often compete together?
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Who started first?
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: We started together actually.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: So Madame December and like two years ago, and I heard about Hard Rocks, and I sent him the link.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: I said, like, oh, I heard something like this, and I would like to try someday.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: And that was like 10 days into dating or knowing each other, 10 days into knowing each other, and he's like, Yeah, I will do something like that.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: And then I we started training for a half marathon.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: I trained him, he was not a runner, and within two months we ran the Zion Half Marathon, which was spectacular.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: And after that, Hyrule's Anaheim was in May, and we started training for that, and we did pretty good.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: We did like 108 in our first race ever, and we are like, huh, we might have a chance all this long.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: And then we trained for High Rock Chicago in October or November of that year, and we did 104, and okay, great.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: We yeah, it just like you know, as you work, it's the same concept, right?
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: The race never changes, so you can see your progression over time, and that motivates you.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: So then we are like, oh, maybe we should go try solo now because our first two races were doubles, and then we did solo after that.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: Huh, I might be ready for the pro now.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: Then we did pro solos.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: We again went back to doubles and just mix and match.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, continue doing the sport, and when you're consistent with something, you will see the progression.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: What's your favorite division?
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, open, pro, relay, doubles.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Uh pro solo absolutely is not absolutely nuts.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: It's literally that.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: It's the hardest, it's like a different ball game.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: But I am leading in New York in May.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: So uh I think I love double mixed a lot because yeah, I I am like emotional connected to that somehow.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: I love double mixed.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: Um, after training for pro, open feels so easy and somewhat joyful.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I can do open all day every day.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: It's like on my weekend training, but at first it was so scary, right?
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: It was such a scary thing going there doing solo.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: But for a year I trained for the probate and And then open weight felt so much easier and lighter.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: So today's Ijan is saying that open is nice and fun.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Two years I jan was scared shit off.
- 22:13unknown: Yeah.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: No, that that's that progression you're you're talking about mentioning there being consistent.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I did relay once in Vegas as well.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Uh that was so much fun.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: It's just like you go one state, you know the format for the relay, right?
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: So you do one run, one station, and that's it until your turn.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: And it's just like sometimes when you are racing, you want to go so fast, and this is absolutely what you shouldn't do in your first run and maybe first couple of stations.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: So you need to be more controlled.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: But it just um I think when you do relay, your what if dreams come true and you just full set, you know, run as fast as you can, do the station as fast as you can, and after that, you don't need to worry about it because you have like another 10-15 minutes to chill, and then you can go for the second run, and that's it.
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: So I think because of that, I love the relay.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: I got my fastest run, I did like 350 something in one kilometer, and like, yeah, let's go.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: So it was fun, it was fun, yeah.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: What would you uh advise?
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Like, uh, first off, what division for someone new to high rocks would you pick and say, hey, this is the one you should start with, and um like training-wise, what should it look like?
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: I will definitely say that star with doubles at this farming, it was it's easier, um, it's less demanding.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: You do rough together and you split the stations the way you want.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: If you do with uh woman woman, it's gonna be the open ways, which is any regular gym goer can do the open weights no problem.
- 24:01SPEAKER_02: If they're a good runner or they are runners in some level, and they are they go to the gym regularly.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Open double is easy, they will get to it, they will have fun.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: And I always say that the first one just go have fun.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: Don't worry about the time because it's your first time ever doing such a thing, and you are learning.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: The first one, just go have fun, and now you have the baseline, then you can start building up for the second one.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: You can see which station needs work, you can see if your runs need work, you can see like where you need to pace, how how how it feels like.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: Get the feelings first, get the baseline first, and you can always improve for second.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Because Haraks is not going anywhere.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Like at this point, we are we know it's not going anywhere.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: Indeed, they added more cities in the states, it's all over the world.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: They did in Turkey for the first time in February, which I did with my dad.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: So yeah, they are not going anywhere.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: They will be around, you will get that other chance.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: The first one, just have fun.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: What was it like doing it with your dad?
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: You know, I saw that he looked super happy.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: I thought this was cool.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: You had to go through some feelings, I'm sure, just doing the high rocks with your dad.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, it just up to doing the high rocks itself.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Before that, it was so emotionally meaningful for me.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Like if you're from somewhere from uh like Middle East, Turkey, Eastern European, your future heavily depends on how your father treats you as a woman.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Unfortunately, that's the fact.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: And if I am able to be independent and choose my own path and just be my own person, it's because my dad allowed me.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: He always came forward, he always showed up, he always showed up with love and care and with little expectation, to be honest.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: And when I asked him if he would do a hyrax with me, I really didn't expect a yes.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: I thought I would have to ask him like so many times, try to convince him, and maybe it will take some time, maybe I can't convince him.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: That was my thinking.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: And then I asked him in my car, uh, FaceTime on WhatsApp.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: I'm like, so they're coming to Turkey.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: That would you do one with me?
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: He had like a second and he smiled, and he said, Yeah, and I was shocked.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: I honestly was shocked.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: He said yes as a first dancer with a smile.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: He didn't even hesitate, he just didn't even hesitate.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: I think he was just happy that I wanted to share this experience with him, and I think that was the reason.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: So my dad had no sports background, you know.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: He he was a strong man, but he never had like any sports in his life, and he started going to the gym, he started running because of that.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: And before that, I was really trying to encourage him to do for his own health, but he didn't want to.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: He didn't have that like one big reason that he would do sports, lift, run, but to cross that finish line with his daughter was his reason to start doing all that.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: I I it really fills my cup, it really makes me so happy.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: I I I I know I am blessed.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: I know I am blessed.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: I am so so incredibly grateful for it.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: And once we decided to do it together, then we start talking more.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: He will that was the best part of it, you know.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: I always talk to my parents like pretty much every day, every other day, but it's short.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Come on, I'm good.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: How are you?
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: Okay, good to see you bye.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: But now we are actually talking about his runs, his lifting, and he's just like a little kid.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: He's like, so I went to the gym today and I talked to this coach, they happen doing this this many times.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: I'm like, yeah, how did how did that feel?
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: It's just like we started speaking about more, and it is such a butterfly effect.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: And after my dad got involved with lifting and running, my mom wanted to do something, and she's starting product, and now I have an active family, and it's just it's amazing.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: That is amazing, yeah.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: Everyone healthy and then working out, yeah.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: That's what we want for our parents, right?
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: So yeah, you want them to live forever, so that's a good start.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Did your dad know what he was getting into when he said yes, other than hey, I just want to share this moment with my daughter?
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Did he know he was gonna have to do some wall ball, sled pull?
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think fully.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, they seen my videos and they knew that you know what I am doing, but he didn't really grasp what really it is.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Um, but I did tell him that we will split the station, so I just need you to walk one kilometer.
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: I don't even need you to run.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: He's but he was so much way.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: No, we are gonna do like less than 130.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: He was like, we are gonna do less than one thirty, we are gonna do less than one twenty.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: And he was so surprisingly strong.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: We actually did split the stations almost half and half.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: He hated burpees and he hated wobbles, and I don't even blame him for that.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: He has all the rights to hate them, but like flat, push, pull, ski.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: He was actually performing better than I did.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I'm like, respect, yeah, respect and shout out to dad.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, signing up in.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's actually gearing up for his own race now.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he continued, he went back, he got like a yearly gym membership with this Hyrux gym, and he's like, Yeah, so when they come next time, I'm gonna just solo.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: I'm like, You go, Dad, go all king.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: You're gonna have to go watch him, uh, see him compete if you can.
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: I will 100%.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Talk to me about your last year.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: Last year you had an amazing year from what I saw.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: You ran your first marathon, you PR'd and a half, you did your first pro high rocks.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: Like, was that the goal from the beginning of the year?
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: And what led to all that?
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: No, no, I don't.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, I do have like a vision board, action board, ideas, but marathon was my only goal for that year.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: And I I did train for that really well, but it was my whole life, that three months, which was annoying for the people around me.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, we got it done.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: Um the 5K, I did 5K and PR.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: It was my first 5K race.
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: I did like 21 minutes, and I signed up to that a week before without a training.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: Trail half marathon was my boyfriend signed up to it, and then he had a conflict with a golf tournament.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Then I'm like, okay, I'll take your ticket because our close friends were going doing that.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: No specific training.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: I had like two long runs before that, and that was it.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: And I just showed up and I did good.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: Um, I would say probably that my first open was like in February, and I'm like, okay, I can do that.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: And then when Anaheim came in December, I'm like, why not pro?
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Why not?
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: So combination of like I had like two big goals, and then throughout the year, the other things came and I said yes to challenge, and I came out really good, I will say.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would say so as well.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: These are some pretty big challenges for sure.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: Like, when did you know, like, hey, I'm actually kind of good at this?
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: I think like my first marathon, first half marathon, I finished with 152, and I had no idea if it was good or bad.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: And some of my friends who were running for a while, and then these girls, I just met them through a plot aspect when I was in, and they're like, Oh, that's really good.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: I'm like, is it good?
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: I had no concept of is it good or not?
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: Um, just and I didn't feel like I really full sent.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: I just did the best I could.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and my friend said that's good.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: I'm like, huh, maybe it is good.
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: And then I did more research.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, okay, I think I might be good at this.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: People had to tell me that it was good at first.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, I'm I'm gonna double down on this.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna, I'm gonna double down on this, and this is how we started.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: How do you uh like you train year-round in in different sports?
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you balance?
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: Hey, I'm training for my high rocks, I'm training for this trail race, you know, different feet patterns, uh half, 5k, full.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: That's a very good question.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: I think I try to pretend one, two things, and the other things I'm not really stressing about it so much.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: As I said, for the last year, what I pretendized was my marathon.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: That was the biggest deal because for someone who runs for about five years, I felt like I should have done the marathon already why I'm so late to do it, which I don't think is a healthy thinking, or I don't think it's a necessarily effect.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: Um, but I also starting attaching so much expectations lately.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, if I if I am running a marathon, I'm gonna give it all, I'm gonna train properly, I'm gonna eat properly, I'm gonna give it, I'm gonna go and give it my best, which I did.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: But I also had a wild dream of qualifying for Boston in my first marathon.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: I know it's not belulu, but to sucks to be successful, right, you need to first believe in yourself.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: That means you can be a little.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: And I still did good, I still did 32 officially.
- 34:53SPEAKER_02: So um going back to your question, I got a little side.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I haven't like one two main goals for the for the year, and the other things you can just sprinkle as they come.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I wouldn't take from my training, my main training, to focus on something else.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I will like pressurize my main event of the year or the season, and then other things I will go try, but I wouldn't spend so much of my valuable time to be good at that because you cannot win everything, you cannot, you cannot be everything right now.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: For example, I am so focused on high rocks, although I am itching for a race for a like 5k, 10k, half marathon.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go race.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: I'm itching so much, but in reality, I don't have time to actually train for it.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: So my first half of the year, I am so focused on my um world championship.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: That's all I am about right now.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: Uh lifting sure amount of weights because that's my weakness as a running base.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: I'm good, but my strength is holding me back.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: We're gonna make these arms a little bigger, you know, and that's my first half, and the second half, um I really want to give it a try for a half Iron Man this year, but I don't know, I still didn't make my mind.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: Um, but I also want to run a marathon and call fire for Boston.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: So I have to pick my battle.
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: I I I cannot I cannot fight everywhere.
- 36:41SPEAKER_02: I'm aware of it, and I'm just trying to pick one of them.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: So um probably Half Iron Man is not gonna happen because I have a full-time job, you know.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: I have a life and it just I don't have that many of time to dedicate, and I don't wanna go do anything off us, you know.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: If I cannot dedicate the time, probably that's not the right time for it.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: So I am hoping to qualify for Boston in the second part of the year.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: I think that seems to be my main goal for the second half, and along the way, I'm sure I will do like a half marathon just for fun.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: I will do some other races for fun along the way, I'm sure.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: But main focus would be a Boston qualification.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: High Rocks World, you're about 12 weeks out on world championships right now.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: Like, what are your thoughts?
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Uh scare, fear, I just need to train better.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Like, what are your thoughts going into it?
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, so we qualify with the with woman doubles, and our time is not the like top of the chain.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: It's we we did good, clearly.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: We qualified.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: We qualified from the age group for the 44 because my partner is a little older than me, and that put us in the 40 for the 40 bands.
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: But at the same time, knowing that we will race with actual athletes that are finishing like 58 minutes, 59, someone hour, that scares me a lot.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: We are going to race with the the biggest names of the hierarchy.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: Like in the grand scheme of things, yes, I qualify for the hierarchs, but I have no one.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: You know, I'm just a civil engineer trying to do hard stuff.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: Like, this is not my full-time job, I'm not doing this for so long.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: And there will be people that are actual athletes do this for a living, and we will share the same floor.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: That is scary.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: That is insanely scary.
- 38:54SPEAKER_02: But I am also so excited at the same time.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: So I always believe if something is scary and exciting at the same time, that's your thing.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: That's that's what you gotta go for.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: And I I cannot wait, to be honest.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: I cannot wait.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: It'll be cool to meet some of those elites that you see often and stuff.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: I'm sure you'll have a great experience.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which I have met some of them.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, end of the day, they're just humans as well, you know, they are not like Holy stars, they are very humble.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: Whoever I met, like they were so humble, they appreciate your hard work as well.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: Doesn't matter what time you finish, month or did two hours, doesn't matter.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: They know it's hard, yeah.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: And they always appreciate, they are always friendly.
- 39:37SPEAKER_02: I never had a bad interaction with any of the like pro-elite athletes, they always been so kind.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Are you and your uh doubles partner making any tweaks for this pro race?
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Anything changing, uh improvement?
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: Well, I am focusing on my strength, and she's focusing on her speed at the moment because I think I could have gone faster.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: Uh on my runs.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: I had like a few runs just kind of waiting for her, which is so fair because she's older than me and everything.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: So she's focusing on her speed, and at the same time, I'm focusing on my strength so I can take more on the stations and give her more recovery to run faster.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: So this is the game plan so far.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: But we haven't really started uh conditioning or working out together as much.
- 40:35SPEAKER_02: That's that will probably happen in the like last month.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: Right now, we are in the build, we are building the base, we still have time, and probably in the last month it will be all about stations and transitions.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: What are the uh logistics like when you have someone, you know, you're doing a double versus an open, open.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: You could just buy yourself, you know, you train, you train for it.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Like, do you guys meet up later on, like you mentioned in the month?
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: You meet up every now and then, like one conditioning session.
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: Combinate, communicate, communicate, communicate, communicate during your training.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Know exactly what you're gonna do when you get there, know when you're gonna change, when you're gonna switch your station.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: So we have trained before our doubles race together.
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: We did like a full simulation of the actual race.
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, we are so lucky to train at Hyrux Performance Center.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: It's the only one in the States right now, and we have the actual uh center equipment, which helps a lot.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: It takes so much guessing game because we have the actual the same carpet that we use in the use in the races, the same slats, same wall boats, same targets, everything is the same.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: So that is so helpful.
- 41:51SPEAKER_02: So we do simulation once or twice before the race and see what we need to change, how we should switch for the maximum outcome, those stuff.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: But we do that before race.
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: Like if you I will say a month before race.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, then you can make the adjustments before race.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: Aijan, something you shared, I loved about your uh page.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: You shared it once, um, I'm not special, I just stayed.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: What does that mean?
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh I remember that post.
- 42:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, again, I'm not special.
- 42:29SPEAKER_02: I stayed when it gets hard.
- 42:31SPEAKER_02: I stayed when I didn't see the results right away.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: I stayed uh when nobody was there, I stayed when nobody was there to cheer for me.
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: I stayed when it looked scary and hard, you know.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: It just uh it comes down to the same word.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: I feel like I'm repeating the same word over and over again, but consistency.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: Nothing happened overnight.
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: I stayed consistent, I focused on my goals, you know, small or big.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: Until I achieve that goal, I continue trying.
- 43:14SPEAKER_02: Fail, try, fail, try, eventually, you will be there.
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: I know that, I knew that because um that's like my story moving to states and becoming an engineer here.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: I got my bachelor's back home, but I didn't have a work permit as an engineer in the states, and the only way to do that was getting my master's.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: And I applied so many schools in Chicago when I was living there, and I kept getting rejected, rejected, rejected.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: I didn't pack my suit and left.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: I didn't do the things that I'm not supposed to do.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: I tried other states.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: I applied to California, I applied Texas, I applied Florida, wherever it is.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: Until I achieved that goal, I was gonna pursue.
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: And then eventually got accepted in California and I moved down here.
- 44:06SPEAKER_02: So I knew if I kept trying, I would succeed at some point.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: So I think that story, you know, that experience I had directly reflected on my fitness journey.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: Directly, it's not different, it's really not different.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: How does someone stay consistent when you know they got a lot going on and uh it's not exciting anymore?
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: It doesn't have to be complicated, it doesn't have to be a big thing, you know.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: You don't have time, you don't do you cannot do one-hour workout, go for 15 minutes.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: Life is busy, do push-ups at home, do Ayers Closet.
