- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm dying. I'm dying of consumption by and that's that's
- 0:08Speaker 1: the plot of m Ridge. I feel like there's a
- 0:16Speaker 1: little bit of a Nicole kiss if you will, you
- 0:20Speaker 1: know anywhere. It's not a Nissance, She's just very present
- 0:25Speaker 1: culture in the moment. So when you think about that
- 0:27Speaker 1: classic question, who is the celebrity who, no matter what,
- 0:32Speaker 1: no questions asked, you will show up to any movie,
- 0:35Speaker 1: TV show, event, whatever they do. Who is that person?
- 0:39Speaker 1: A lot of people say Julia Roberts, Meryl Street. You know,
- 0:42Speaker 1: when I think about that question, I'm pretty sure my
- 0:44Speaker 1: answer is Nicole Kidman's Mulan Rouge and only Mulan Rouge
- 0:49Speaker 1: was one of the biggest cultural shifts of my childhood.
- 0:53Speaker 1: And we'll get into that and it for me, it
- 0:56Speaker 1: was practical Magic, yes exactly, I was gonna say. So,
- 0:59Speaker 1: we had huge Nicole Kiman related cultural pivot, and I
- 1:02Speaker 1: do think we will need to do a separate episode
- 1:05Speaker 1: in Practical Magic maybe, but we will be diving into
- 1:11Speaker 1: them today because we are talking about Nicole Kidman. We
- 1:13Speaker 1: are going through um and looking at not just her work,
- 1:18Speaker 1: but like Nicole Kidman as she shows up in pop
- 1:21Speaker 1: culture at large. Because this is like a virgin the
- 1:23Speaker 1: show where we give yesterday's pop culture today's takes. I'm Rose,
- 1:26Speaker 1: damn you. I'm Fran Toronto. Right now. I'm wearing a wig,
- 1:30Speaker 1: my undoing wig. Fran is wearing a wig. That's more
- 1:33Speaker 1: than do the boy erased wig. I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 1:37Speaker 1: do the old country mom. Actually, maybe I'll do the
- 1:40Speaker 1: birth wig. I've never I've never seen birth. I know
- 1:44Speaker 1: the basic premise of it, and I don't know that
- 1:46Speaker 1: I want to see it, but you know, happy for
- 1:49Speaker 1: the people who love it. Oh. Actually, maybe the wig
- 1:52Speaker 1: I'm wearing is her wig from the beginning of Stepford
- 1:57Speaker 1: Wives when she has the short dark hair done. Oh.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I like it's a very good look. I like her
- 2:01Speaker 1: Stepford hair. I think the classic kind of like she's
- 2:07Speaker 1: god any Stepford Wives. This is a great movie. We'll
- 2:11Speaker 1: talk about it. I'm in Los Angeles, Fran is in
- 2:18Speaker 1: New York. Yes, I'm in New York. I'm having what
- 2:20Speaker 1: feels like my seventh birthday party and the last two
- 2:25Speaker 1: weeks span um. I just came to these because to
- 2:27Speaker 1: celebrate with some friends. That is why my audio sounds
- 2:31Speaker 1: a little shitty today. I forgot the little wire part
- 2:34Speaker 1: that connects to my microphone. Very sorry to home. I
- 2:38Speaker 1: love you, I love your birthday. I love um celebrating
- 2:42Speaker 1: your birthday with you. I personally don't understand the impulse
- 2:45Speaker 1: to celebrate one's birthday that much. I don't even want
- 2:50Speaker 1: to do it once. I, as a tourist, throw my
- 2:53Speaker 1: own birthday party every year, if not multiple parties. Parties. Yes,
- 2:58Speaker 1: but I woke up this morning and I have a
- 3:00Speaker 1: New York bagel and so jealous. You should be jealous
- 3:05Speaker 1: because I mean not to trash talk l A, but
- 3:07Speaker 1: like the bagels, they're are just Los Angeles bagels are bullshit.
- 3:11Speaker 1: They're are not on par and let me tell you
- 3:12Speaker 1: I don't exist. I'm sorry to take here controversial opinion.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But like this like kind of Instagram famous like l
- 3:19Speaker 1: a bagel place, Courage Bagels, the one that did you
- 3:21Speaker 1: see the New York Times article about this place? You know,
- 3:23Speaker 1: I don't read newspapers. A year or two ago, like
- 3:25Speaker 1: the New York Times wrote a piece that was like
- 3:27Speaker 1: the best bagels are in Los Angeles, and now every
- 3:30Speaker 1: time it's not true. But now every time you walk
- 3:34Speaker 1: past Courage Bagels, there's like a two block long line,
- 3:38Speaker 1: like out the door, it's cuckoo. I went to this
- 3:40Speaker 1: place Rose there's no eggs on the menu. No eggs
- 3:46Speaker 1: for a bagel. Place that makes no sense. And then
- 3:49Speaker 1: they didn't how they were out of coffee and they
- 3:52Speaker 1: waited so long. Yes, they were out of coffee. When
- 3:54Speaker 1: I was like, what is that's a huge mega flop
- 3:58Speaker 1: And I ordered a salt bagel, who was actually very
- 4:00Speaker 1: excited about because it had been a minute since I
- 4:02Speaker 1: ordered a salt bagel and there was no salt on it.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Not enough. Yeah, exactly this low sodium salt bagel. Um. Anyways,
- 4:12Speaker 1: sorry to end rant On on bagels. No, I I
- 4:17Speaker 1: am in the trenches right here with you. I hate
- 4:21Speaker 1: that Los Angeles doesn't have good bagels. That um my
- 4:26Speaker 1: hinge profile. You know, one of the questions says, I'm
- 4:29Speaker 1: buying if um we're getting around of And my answer
- 4:33Speaker 1: is bagels. I am a Jewish girl from Bok or
- 4:37Speaker 1: a Tone. There is nothing I love more than a
- 4:39Speaker 1: good bagel, and I have yet to find one in
- 4:42Speaker 1: l A. And every time I say that to someone,
- 4:43Speaker 1: they're like, wait, but have you tried this place? Have
- 4:45Speaker 1: you tried this place? I actually hooked up with someone
- 4:48Speaker 1: a couple of months ago who works at a bagel
- 4:50Speaker 1: place and they were like, oh, but the bagels that
- 4:53Speaker 1: we have a really good and I was like, no,
- 4:54Speaker 1: they're not. And they were like, have you ever been there?
- 4:57Speaker 1: And I said no, but I know the the bagels
- 5:00Speaker 1: aren't good. And they were like, oh, I'm going to
- 5:02Speaker 1: bring you some and I said, please, don't, please do not.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You can throw that lease, do not. I used to
- 5:07Speaker 1: work at a bagel store. I've stopped trying. Yeah, I
- 5:10Speaker 1: used to work at a bagel store. And we threw
- 5:12Speaker 1: out garbage bags filled with bagels. Oh my god, they're
- 5:16Speaker 1: so good. Bagels are so good. You know what else
- 5:21Speaker 1: is really good? Rose? What? Um heart stopper? This show
- 5:25Speaker 1: on Netflix that you high key introduced me to because
- 5:28Speaker 1: you gave me the first edition. It was like the
- 5:31Speaker 1: first installation of the graphic novel series that it's based on.
- 5:34Speaker 1: While I had COVID and now it's a show. I
- 5:37Speaker 1: knew you needed something, um, you know, uh tender and
- 5:42Speaker 1: and nice. Let me tell you I opened. I opened
- 5:46Speaker 1: up that book thinking like, you know, I was gonna
- 5:50Speaker 1: fall asleep to it after like page fifteen, and I
- 5:52Speaker 1: was up until one finishing that book, it was so good.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And the show, which really like lift scenes from the book,
- 6:01Speaker 1: like panel by panel, which I really love, like it's
- 6:04Speaker 1: a very true adaptation, was just as well. It was
- 6:08Speaker 1: helmed by Alice Osman, who wrote and drew the comics.
- 6:11Speaker 1: No way that never happen. Yeah, Alice was the showrunner. Wow,
- 6:15Speaker 1: that reminds me of like the Perks of being a
- 6:17Speaker 1: Wallfler adaptation also by the author, and how it was
- 6:20Speaker 1: just like such a true perfect like it never happens
- 6:23Speaker 1: that way, where like the adaptation is as good or
- 6:26Speaker 1: embellishes what we enjoyed about the book. But like, I mean,
- 6:30Speaker 1: there are a lot of things I loved about Heart Stopper.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I'd be curious to know, like what you loved about it.
- 6:34Speaker 1: But like, first off, like every character that isn't one
- 6:37Speaker 1: of the two main characters is a lesbian, and this show,
- 6:41Speaker 1: like every single like even the characters that aren't lesbians
- 6:44Speaker 1: are lesbians, like the teachers. So it's so great that
- 6:48Speaker 1: they talk specifically about being lesbians. I think like for
- 6:52Speaker 1: some reason in TV, that has become like a naughty
- 6:56Speaker 1: word or like I don't know, there's this feeling from
- 6:59Speaker 1: jen Z that they don't want to define themselves or
- 7:02Speaker 1: shouldn't have to, or like you know, Harry Style saying
- 7:04Speaker 1: like he'll never reveal his sexuality whatever. And it's just
- 7:08Speaker 1: so nice to have like these girls saying they're lesbians
- 7:12Speaker 1: because that is really important for the young lesbians watching
- 7:15Speaker 1: the show exactly, and like lesbian humor really snuck through
- 7:19Speaker 1: over and over again, and also bisexual humor because there's
- 7:23Speaker 1: a by character in this show and like, I'm sure
- 7:26Speaker 1: this was the moment that was it for you, but
- 7:29Speaker 1: like kind of spoiler alert, the moment that one of
- 7:32Speaker 1: the main characters figures out that he's bisexual is when
- 7:35Speaker 1: he's watching Pirates of the Caribbean and he realizes that
- 7:38Speaker 1: he's attracted to both Kara Knightley and Arlando Bloom, which
- 7:42Speaker 1: is that's how it happened. That's how it happens. That
- 7:46Speaker 1: is exactly how it happened. Everyone knows that there are
- 7:48Speaker 1: two bisexual cultural objects in this world, and it's Pirates
- 7:51Speaker 1: of the Caribbean and Aladdin. And if you're attracted to
- 7:53Speaker 1: both of the romantic leads in those movies, that is
- 7:57Speaker 1: like your bisexual awakening. Um is true. Um. I also
- 8:01Speaker 1: just loved um L the character played by um Yasmin
- 8:08Speaker 1: Finney who's trans. I thought it was so great to
- 8:12Speaker 1: see a trans character who's like any um, any conflict
- 8:19Speaker 1: she had in her life was not about being trans. Um.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And even the way she was introduced where they said like, oh, yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 1: she used to go to school with us, like they
- 8:30Speaker 1: never they never had to like have a moment where
- 8:32Speaker 1: they're like, yes, her name used to be this and
- 8:35Speaker 1: she used to identify this way, and like it was
- 8:37Speaker 1: just like really, it was a really nice um. Just
- 8:42Speaker 1: look at what queer representation in popular culture can be
- 8:48Speaker 1: if it's done the right way by queer people. Yeah.
- 8:51Speaker 1: And like the other thing about like queer storytelling us,
- 8:54Speaker 1: like a lot of the stories that were used to
- 8:56Speaker 1: our stories were in the trans person or the queer
- 8:59Speaker 1: person like walks into the room and everything has to
- 9:02Speaker 1: come to a screeching halt to like acknowledge that's what happens. Yeah,
- 9:06Speaker 1: everyone's like wait, we just have to stop and say
- 9:08Speaker 1: that this person is trans. But like with hard stop
- 9:10Speaker 1: where it's like the queerness even though they are like
- 9:13Speaker 1: coming out um components of the plot like that, it's
- 9:16Speaker 1: all very effortless and the plot does not really waste time,
- 9:20Speaker 1: um under the umbrella of oppression, and it gets it
- 9:23Speaker 1: right into the drama and the love and the romance.
- 9:26Speaker 1: It's so good, it's very sweet. UM highly recommend. We
- 9:31Speaker 1: also started on our Netflix role. I'm selling Sunset this week,
- 9:35Speaker 1: this let this past week. UM, I just finished it
- 9:38Speaker 1: last night. I finished it two. What did you think?
- 9:41Speaker 1: What is Christine really going to leave the O group?
- 9:44Speaker 1: Like what I'm going on? This season has really picked up,
- 9:48Speaker 1: like I think the fit like it really like I
- 9:51Speaker 1: don't know, has been like a roller coaster for me.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And like I was not a passive watcher this season.
- 9:58Speaker 1: It was very active. Mica is so hot, so hot,
- 10:04Speaker 1: it's insane. I just have to pour one out for Chelsea.
- 10:07Speaker 1: She and her indecipherable accent. Indecipherable. She went to the
- 10:11Speaker 1: Dorry Kemsley School of Dialect Coaching, Mama, and I have
- 10:15Speaker 1: to tell you, Chelsea is such an exceptional villain. Like
- 10:20Speaker 1: the way she goes into a conversation and poses all
- 10:25Speaker 1: these other girls down, Like to me, it's just like
- 10:29Speaker 1: so it's like so incisively done. And I think something
- 10:33Speaker 1: that she does very well is be a reality TV character.
- 10:38Speaker 1: You know what I mean, A lot of the other
- 10:39Speaker 1: girls are like amazing, but you're like, you know, we're
- 10:42Speaker 1: real estate agents, like we're trying to do our job.
- 10:44Speaker 1: At Chelsea's there to like be on TV and she's
- 10:47Speaker 1: like so good at it. Also, I mean Roman like
- 10:52Speaker 1: parts of oh is it Romane? Yeah, like the lettuce
- 10:57Speaker 1: I think parts of earlier seasons like I didn't quite
- 10:59Speaker 1: like get it. I was like, okay, like I don't know.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I always call him like Mary's like male order bride
- 11:06Speaker 1: kind of moment, but like for me, like Romaine. I
- 11:09Speaker 1: think something about this season. I was like, maybe it's
- 11:11Speaker 1: because he's very like Adam Driver sized. I'm like, he's
- 11:14Speaker 1: really doing it for me and he's very charming and
- 11:16Speaker 1: like I love his conflicts with Mary are much more
- 11:20Speaker 1: um speaking out speaking of Adam Driver, um No, I
- 11:24Speaker 1: did finish Girls on Saturday. I watched all six seasons
- 11:30Speaker 1: of Girls in two weeks. That's kind of gross. It
- 11:34Speaker 1: is it is sick for your health. I'm also concerned
- 11:39Speaker 1: for my health. I mean, I'll say I've been dealing
- 11:42Speaker 1: with some personal issues which have led me to spend
- 11:45Speaker 1: hours at a time watching Girls on Atrio, Max and
- 11:50Speaker 1: the Girls have been there for me in the trenches.
- 11:54Speaker 1: The last season is so good. Um, we we talked
- 11:58Speaker 1: about this a lot last week. If you haven't listen
- 12:00Speaker 1: to Our Girls episode, please do. But yeah, I think
- 12:03Speaker 1: like there definitely are some bad seasons around the middle
- 12:07Speaker 1: that I didn't really remember much of, but the last
- 12:11Speaker 1: two seasons are so great, And um, I don't know,
- 12:17Speaker 1: I might be ready for a lenaisance Rose don't even
- 12:23Speaker 1: invoke that. I mean, we already had our lena'sans, Like,
- 12:26Speaker 1: I don't even I don't think that there's a zance
- 12:28Speaker 1: to be happening. Asonce is a return. Um we are
- 12:32Speaker 1: having you know, Jemima. Okay, Jessa is very much in
- 12:36Speaker 1: the culture. She's going to be in Conversations with Friends,
- 12:39Speaker 1: which is the next Sally Rooney adaptation, which I am
- 12:43Speaker 1: excited about because I like Conversations with Friends even more
- 12:47Speaker 1: than I liked Normal People the book. But the trailer
- 12:51Speaker 1: made it look very melodramatic in a way that Sally
- 12:55Speaker 1: Rooney's writing just isn't. Have you read any Sally Rooney. No,
- 13:00Speaker 1: that's another kind of like tragically heterosexual, Like Conversations with
- 13:05Speaker 1: Friends is queer. Yeah, you were telling and I mean
- 13:08Speaker 1: also her most recent book, My Beautiful World. Where Are You?
- 13:11Speaker 1: There's a bisexual character in it. Yeah, but trailers are marketing.
- 13:15Speaker 1: We'll see what the show is actually like. I obviously
- 13:17Speaker 1: will be watching it both for you know, the salaryny
- 13:21Speaker 1: of it all, and because I want to see if, um,
- 13:23Speaker 1: Taylor Swiss boyfriend is going to show cock. Oh my gosh,
- 13:28Speaker 1: he's in it, or at least but yeah, he's the
- 13:31Speaker 1: male lead. Yeah. I mean, this is one of those
- 13:34Speaker 1: things that you're just gonna have to let me know
- 13:36Speaker 1: because I will never read the books and I probably
- 13:39Speaker 1: won't watch the things, you know what I mean? But
- 13:41Speaker 1: I respect and I think you're missing out. I think
- 13:43Speaker 1: it would be a great beach read this summer for you.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I'm sure I'll have a gander the next time I
- 13:49Speaker 1: get the flu or something, but not not today. Um.
- 13:53Speaker 1: But speaking of Hulu, Uh, there's a new lesbian rom
- 13:57Speaker 1: com on Hulu called Crush. Have you heard about this?
- 14:00Speaker 1: I have? Um, I mean we we know several people
- 14:03Speaker 1: who were involved in it. Yes, yeah, yeah, there's quite
- 14:07Speaker 1: There was quite an amazing cast and team of writers
- 14:09Speaker 1: on this film, and it is the most adorable, like
- 14:13Speaker 1: teeny bopper kind of love triangle story I have seen
- 14:17Speaker 1: in quite some time, and also just like tragically like
- 14:22Speaker 1: one of a kind in its era, Like they're really
- 14:24Speaker 1: like a lesbian romcom that takes place in high school
- 14:27Speaker 1: should not be rare. And I think to see like
- 14:30Speaker 1: run Blenchard and the girl from Mohanna and like all
- 14:33Speaker 1: these other folks kind of come together to in it. Yes,
- 14:36Speaker 1: Molanna's in it and she's good. Oh she's she's queer.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I r L right, I believe so. Yes, and all
- 14:43Speaker 1: three of the leads are extremely hot, um, which is
- 14:46Speaker 1: maybe my one complaint. I was like, it's I was
- 14:48Speaker 1: like all three of these like they're all so hot.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Like I was like, what is even We need ugly representations,
- 14:54Speaker 1: so we need ugly representation. Um. But the jokes are
- 14:58Speaker 1: whip smart. The ending maybe a little too tidy, But
- 15:02Speaker 1: like the thing about like representation at larrangees like we
- 15:07Speaker 1: need to just be making things and like not like
- 15:10Speaker 1: tearing them apart. We say, like, this is a movie
- 15:12Speaker 1: and it was cute and I enjoyed myself and I
- 15:14Speaker 1: also had a cute date like on that at the
- 15:17Speaker 1: movie screening, and so you know that's like what these
- 15:20Speaker 1: movies are for to like take dates to. Right. Yes,
- 15:23Speaker 1: one film though that I would not have taken a
- 15:25Speaker 1: date to is The Northman. Well, actually maybe I would,
- 15:28Speaker 1: because it's that's kind of my date vibe. We today,
- 15:33Speaker 1: obviously are are larger. Conversation is about Nicole Kidman and
- 15:36Speaker 1: friend and I had planned to see The Northman together. Um,
- 15:40Speaker 1: due to scheduling, that was not possible. And I think
- 15:43Speaker 1: it's probably for the best because fran you would have
- 15:46Speaker 1: hated it, really, you would have hated it so much,
- 15:49Speaker 1: Oh my god, I mean you didn't like The Green
- 15:52Speaker 1: Night you you would have hated hated the Door. You know,
- 16:00Speaker 1: it's it's so violent and gory and it's so um
- 16:09Speaker 1: mask even though there's a lot of like there's a
- 16:14Speaker 1: there's a lot of great performances by women in it,
- 16:17Speaker 1: and like, as it turns out, the women kind of
- 16:20Speaker 1: drive the story. But it's just not it's not your tea,
- 16:25Speaker 1: you know. I feel like there's still a chance I'll
- 16:28Speaker 1: go see it on report back, But like, if you
- 16:30Speaker 1: don't want to read conversations with friends, I don't see
- 16:33Speaker 1: you watching The Northman. Look I like some like you know,
- 16:37Speaker 1: broy like sci fi, like epic stories. You know, I
- 16:41Speaker 1: thought that it was BROI it's that it was. You
- 16:43Speaker 1: said it was kind of mask so I guess yeah.
- 16:46Speaker 1: So you know, it's directed by the same director who
- 16:49Speaker 1: did The Witch or The Vich and the Lighthouse, and
- 16:55Speaker 1: in the same way that The Witch was styled as
- 16:57Speaker 1: a New England folk tale, and like The Witch truly
- 17:02Speaker 1: is like what would happen if all of the like
- 17:06Speaker 1: folk tales about witches from the time of Americans, like
- 17:10Speaker 1: colonizing and settling in um North America were true? You know,
- 17:15Speaker 1: like this very traditional tale of like a witch living
- 17:18Speaker 1: in the woods who worshiped Satan blah blah blah, and
- 17:20Speaker 1: like doing kind of like a literal interpretation of that
- 17:23Speaker 1: in a very like engaging, artful way. Um. I think
- 17:27Speaker 1: this similarly is that for this like Norse Viking tale
- 17:34Speaker 1: of revenge? And I just I don't know if that's
- 17:37Speaker 1: something you would enjoy. I could definitely see us walking
- 17:40Speaker 1: out of the theater and you're going, um, I hated that,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you know, I liked The Witch. I think to me,
- 17:46Speaker 1: it's all down to how slow the movie is. Because
- 17:49Speaker 1: the movie is really slow and a lot of exposition.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I do tend to, like, you know, to now, but
- 17:54Speaker 1: like if there's some battles and there's some incest and
- 17:57Speaker 1: there's some buelerk, like I feel like there is there
- 18:00Speaker 1: is incest, there is incest and b york be or
- 18:05Speaker 1: there should have been more buyork. Honestly, she is only
- 18:08Speaker 1: in it very briefly, and I could have used about,
- 18:12Speaker 1: you know, uh more more bork, as is the case
- 18:18Speaker 1: with anything you know. Anna Taylor Joy was fab, she
- 18:23Speaker 1: always is. Her hair was so blonde. Um, Nicole Kidman
- 18:28Speaker 1: was great. She like she's a main character. Is she
- 18:33Speaker 1: kind of a side character? She is in terms of
- 18:38Speaker 1: the screen time she gets. She is more of a
- 18:41Speaker 1: secondary character, but she is looming presence throughout the film.
- 18:47Speaker 1: It has some incredible scenes. I'm so excited. I mean,
- 18:53Speaker 1: I'm going to watch it. I think I might prove
- 18:55Speaker 1: you wrong. Okay, Um, Nicole Kidman icon legend star in
- 19:16Speaker 1: every sense of the word. Oscar Winner, Aussie and are our.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I mean not to start with this, but if that
- 19:25Speaker 1: is perhaps Nicole's one fatal flaw, it is the occasional
- 19:29Speaker 1: slipping into any when she does her therapy scenes and
- 19:33Speaker 1: big little etcetera. Her black sent work is spotty best.
- 19:38Speaker 1: But the thing is it doesn't matter because she's so magnetic.
- 19:42Speaker 1: It's kind of like, I feel like cool transcends genre,
- 19:45Speaker 1: space and time dialects. Tony Collette also, you know, sometimes
- 19:49Speaker 1: doesn't always nail the accent, but it doesn't matter. Like
- 19:51Speaker 1: there are a lot of like women who it's like,
- 19:53Speaker 1: it doesn't matter slipping because you're so good. Um, So okay,
- 20:00Speaker 1: let's start from the beginning. Is practical magic. The beginning
- 20:03Speaker 1: for your practical magic is the beginning for me in
- 20:08Speaker 1: so many ways. I would say, of like, if we're
- 20:12Speaker 1: talking about like pop cultural top tens, you know, we
- 20:15Speaker 1: talked in our Wizard of Oz episode about how returned
- 20:20Speaker 1: to Oz is one of the most formative things in
- 20:22Speaker 1: my life. Practical magic is like one of those ten
- 20:25Speaker 1: things as well. It is definitely the thing I mean,
- 20:28Speaker 1: I'm sure Wizard of Oz and the related content I
- 20:33Speaker 1: think are the first things in my life that made
- 20:35Speaker 1: me obsessed with witches. And I think practical magic was
- 20:38Speaker 1: like the gateway into a kind of like um modern
- 20:42Speaker 1: contemporary like sexy nineties, which and I think practical magic
- 20:46Speaker 1: is like much more of the like aesthetic that I
- 20:49Speaker 1: was drawn to, you know, the like the shelf of
- 20:51Speaker 1: the like the like coastal Grandma vibes, the like cottage
- 20:55Speaker 1: core vibes of like the house. And the extensions. Oh
- 21:00Speaker 1: my god, there have never been more extensions in a
- 21:02Speaker 1: film than there are in Practical Magic. Actually, it's really
- 21:05Speaker 1: you would think with all of the wigs and all
- 21:08Speaker 1: of the hair that Nicole has worn, but it really is.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I was alarmed by the amount of hair and that
- 21:13Speaker 1: was it must have been so heavy and practice. This
- 21:15Speaker 1: is an episode, truly, everyone, This is episode about wigs, truly,
- 21:19Speaker 1: and you and I are probably gonna do a separate
- 21:21Speaker 1: episode on Practical Magic, but it's worth mentioning that you
- 21:25Speaker 1: did induct me into that movie. That was a true,
- 21:27Speaker 1: true to the conceit of the show. I had never
- 21:29Speaker 1: seen it before and you were like, you need to
- 21:30Speaker 1: see Practical Magic. Yeah, we on Halloween twenty twenty watched
- 21:36Speaker 1: Practical Magic in your old apartment in West Hollywood. And
- 21:39Speaker 1: so your Practical Magic was my Mulin rouge, another Nicole
- 21:43Speaker 1: kidman you know, vehicle, and um for me, it was
- 21:47Speaker 1: based in a very specific moment in my life where um,
- 21:50Speaker 1: I was kind of coming out of my like Bible
- 21:54Speaker 1: closet and starting to make friends. That weren't Christians and
- 21:58Speaker 1: weren't from youth group. And one of my friends had
- 22:01Speaker 1: a next door neighbor that was like a a profuse
- 22:04Speaker 1: atheist at the age of seventh grade, and that was
- 22:08Speaker 1: like so terrifying to me, as like a little Christian baby.
- 22:11Speaker 1: And yet I was so drawn to like this the badness,
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know, so drawn to like someone who I feel
- 22:16Speaker 1: like everyone has kind of like a bad girl figure
- 22:19Speaker 1: in their childhood that like, you know, broke them open
- 22:21Speaker 1: in a little way. And for me, this girl, Melt
- 22:24Speaker 1: was it. And Melt a slut name. It is a
- 22:27Speaker 1: slut name, and she was a by atheist slut. Oh
- 22:30Speaker 1: my god, I love her. Yes, and I'm also atheist.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Yes you are. Yes, how do y'all find me? I
- 22:36Speaker 1: don't know? Um and you have some kind of pheromones. Yeah,
- 22:42Speaker 1: and so she so we would like play around the
- 22:43Speaker 1: cold de sect. We would also like play truth or
- 22:45Speaker 1: air like, yeah, culd a sector slutty. I'm pretty sure that,
- 22:49Speaker 1: like Mel was one of my first is like a
- 22:51Speaker 1: whole we would do like you would like sexually explore,
- 22:54Speaker 1: like us seventh graders together. So she was kind of
- 22:57Speaker 1: corrupting us in truth or dairy ways, like it was
- 23:00Speaker 1: like a whole mess. But like mel was not only
- 23:02Speaker 1: the person to show me rent, which was another thing
- 23:04Speaker 1: that we've talked about on the show about as a
- 23:06Speaker 1: thing that broke me open. We'll we won't, we will
- 23:10Speaker 1: um and but that was like a secular awakening. But
- 23:13Speaker 1: Mulan Rouge was it. And I think for me it
- 23:16Speaker 1: combined things that I'm attracted to now in terms of fabulouism, fantasy,
- 23:22Speaker 1: the kind of over the topness of bas Lermans, like
- 23:25Speaker 1: kind of aesthetic lent it to the extremely gay appeal
- 23:29Speaker 1: of that movie. And they I think that on top
- 23:32Speaker 1: of queerness in the movie, on top of um, a
- 23:35Speaker 1: lot of sex in the movie, on top of like
- 23:37Speaker 1: you know, drugs, drinking, like all these different stuff and
- 23:40Speaker 1: like hooker and the romance. Yeah, and it's like all
- 23:43Speaker 1: of that is it is like a mainstream movie musical
- 23:47Speaker 1: about sex workers. Yes, And I think that that was
- 23:52Speaker 1: like just imagine any consumption, seventh g D consumption, yes,
- 23:57Speaker 1: and seventh grade friend. Like the shows I watched with
- 23:59Speaker 1: my family are like Little House on the Prairie and
- 24:02Speaker 1: then Melbanne Yes, and then amel being like, well, have
- 24:06Speaker 1: you seen Mulan Rouge. So I will remember watching this
- 24:10Speaker 1: movie and being like feeling kind of scared. Literally, like
- 24:14Speaker 1: that's my experience of watching the film. But in terms
- 24:17Speaker 1: of Nicole in this like she had taken two voice
- 24:22Speaker 1: lessons before this movie and a famously, I mean the
- 24:26Speaker 1: moment that she gets lowered from the ceiling, my something shifted.
- 24:31Speaker 1: My world was forever altered. Oh, we also have to
- 24:34Speaker 1: say Nicole Kidman is redhead culture culture. Um, I would
- 24:39Speaker 1: say that of the times that I have dyed my
- 24:42Speaker 1: hair red have been directly inspired by Nicole Kidman. Like
- 24:48Speaker 1: it's either it's October and I'm watching Practical Magic and
- 24:52Speaker 1: I am calling my stylist or running to Target to
- 24:55Speaker 1: get a box die, or like I'm watching Mulan Rouge
- 24:59Speaker 1: or you know, thing back in the days when Nicole
- 25:02Speaker 1: was a redhead, because you know, we are now living
- 25:04Speaker 1: in Nicole's blonde era. And I think Mulan Rouge specifically
- 25:08Speaker 1: was a movie that set the tone for what the
- 25:11Speaker 1: rest of Nicole's career would be because obviously that wasn't
- 25:14Speaker 1: her breakout role by any means, but it was a
- 25:17Speaker 1: role that put her on the map. And I think
- 25:20Speaker 1: she was nominated. I think it was when she became
- 25:22Speaker 1: a movie star. Because the Nicole was nominated for Best
- 25:27Speaker 1: Actress of the Oscars in two thousand two. She did
- 25:30Speaker 1: not win, but I would say that that was the
- 25:33Speaker 1: film that catapulted her to a list superstardom. She had
- 25:37Speaker 1: already been swirling in that space. But I think up
- 25:40Speaker 1: until then it was largely because of her proximity to
- 25:43Speaker 1: Tom Cruise. And I do think that this transition into
- 25:48Speaker 1: her being an a List actress kind of was the
- 25:52Speaker 1: end of their marriage. Um oh, I didn't know that.
- 25:55Speaker 1: I think I think he did kind of resent her stardom,
- 26:00Speaker 1: like starting to be level with or even eclipse his
- 26:07Speaker 1: um and we all know that Tom Cruise is like
- 26:11Speaker 1: a deeply insecure scientologist. Yes, and we oh, and Nicole's okay.
- 26:15Speaker 1: So she was nominated for mulan Rugi in two thousand one,
- 26:19Speaker 1: lost to Halle Berry who won for Monster's Ball, but
- 26:22Speaker 1: she won the next year for The Hours. Wow, Okay,
- 26:27Speaker 1: that'sund surprising to me. And that was the beginning of
- 26:29Speaker 1: her which I and I actually think that it should
- 26:31Speaker 1: have been swapped because she should have won for mulan
- 26:36Speaker 1: Rugi in two thousand one and then Renee's Alwigger should
- 26:39Speaker 1: have won for Chicago the next year. All the thing is, well,
- 26:42Speaker 1: the thing is, I mean we needed that. How I
- 26:44Speaker 1: think the halle Berry win is so Academy Academy iconography. Well,
- 26:49Speaker 1: I mean she was the first black woman to win
- 26:51Speaker 1: Best Actress in addition to being that is horrible. I
- 26:55Speaker 1: actually have never seen it. But but also, like the
- 26:58Speaker 1: thing about oscars is is it's about the speeches. It's
- 27:01Speaker 1: not about the awards. It's about the speeches. And Hallie's
- 27:04Speaker 1: speech is the reason that the orchestra plays you off.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Now did you know that? Because how Hallie's speech was
- 27:10Speaker 1: so so long that I think that it went like
- 27:13Speaker 1: way over time and they have to you know, they're
- 27:14Speaker 1: they're charged on all these fees or whatever, and that
- 27:18Speaker 1: the Academy I think the next year created a rule
- 27:20Speaker 1: around speech times. And now the orchestra plays you off
- 27:23Speaker 1: because of Hallie, which I think is iconic. Um Okay,
- 27:26Speaker 1: So Mulin Rouge was huge. The hours for me, I
- 27:30Speaker 1: think really hit my like collegiate like nerd points, you
- 27:34Speaker 1: know all of them. It's very it's it's a very quintessential.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Like I would say, especially gay men are obsessed with
- 27:44Speaker 1: the Hours, and not just gay men literary like kind
- 27:48Speaker 1: of Brooklyn esque gay fags, especially ones who were into theater. Yeah,
- 27:52Speaker 1: and ones that read like a little life ye god
- 28:00Speaker 1: um yeah, But I mean, I what do you remember
- 28:03Speaker 1: about the Hours, Like when you first watched Nicole's No
- 28:05Speaker 1: obviously Nicole's Meryl carrying the flowers Nicole iconic style. I
- 28:10Speaker 1: bought the flowers herself, Yeah, Nicole walking into the river
- 28:13Speaker 1: with stones in her pocket. Yeah, I don't. I don't
- 28:15Speaker 1: remember much about the Hours. I think it's more of
- 28:18Speaker 1: like a mood piece for me. I remember love Virginia Wolf,
- 28:22Speaker 1: though I was going to say I was really at
- 28:24Speaker 1: the at the time, or maybe honestly because of the Hours.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I remember becoming really obsessed with Virginia Wolf when I
- 28:32Speaker 1: was in the UK for abroad, and I remember reading
- 28:36Speaker 1: Virginia wolves like diaries, which I do not recommend their
- 28:40Speaker 1: dark the dark Dark. I do recommend her poetry though, yes,
- 28:45Speaker 1: you collected poems of Virginia Wolf's great stunning. But I
- 28:48Speaker 1: remember like walking around London with like Virginia Wolf slash
- 28:52Speaker 1: Nicole Kidman's voice in my head, like thinking, because you
- 28:56Speaker 1: don't picture Virginia picture Nicole, and I think, honestly that
- 29:00Speaker 1: is the mark of a of a very stunning biopic,
- 29:04Speaker 1: kind of like lavin anal, where it's like I no
- 29:06Speaker 1: longer think about the original, the actual person, I think
- 29:10Speaker 1: about how iconic this portrayal was, and you know what,
- 29:13Speaker 1: I actually think, it's like, I'm glad that the that
- 29:17Speaker 1: the like cultural portrayal we have a Virginia Wolf is
- 29:22Speaker 1: not a biopic that's just about Virginia Wolf, because that
- 29:25Speaker 1: would be like too much of a bummer, And it's
- 29:28Speaker 1: good that it's in this story that is about a
- 29:32Speaker 1: couple of different women, so you're not like overwhelmed by
- 29:36Speaker 1: the depression that was Virginia Wolf's life. Have you ever
- 29:39Speaker 1: read Orlando? Um? No, I haven't, but it's very trans
- 29:43Speaker 1: It's very trans and I've I've read it, but I've
- 29:46Speaker 1: never seen the movie starting Untilda Swinton and like, maybe
- 29:49Speaker 1: we should watch that. I've heard it's not bad. I know,
- 29:51Speaker 1: I've heard it's it's supposed to be incredible. I'm not
- 29:54Speaker 1: really as much of a till to stand as as
- 29:56Speaker 1: other people. I'm a I'm a Tiltonista all denista, but
- 30:01Speaker 1: you know what is it actually when I I like
- 30:03Speaker 1: you know when we looked over when you when I say, like,
- 30:07Speaker 1: you know, uh, Mulan Rouge was the beginning of a
- 30:10Speaker 1: type of woman that Nicole would play. It really is
- 30:14Speaker 1: depressed women like depressed, but sexy, depressed, sexy, introspective because
- 30:22Speaker 1: even negretive, even in practical magic, that's her type. Yes,
- 30:25Speaker 1: she is the you know, she is a victim of
- 30:28Speaker 1: domestic abuse um and sexual violence who you know murders
- 30:32Speaker 1: her boyfriend. Um. But she's still like the sex pot. Yeah,
- 30:36Speaker 1: she's a sex pot. And I think that I think
- 30:38Speaker 1: that Nicole kicks the redhead thing. Yes it is. It
- 30:41Speaker 1: is absolutely the red head archetype. It's also her voice
- 30:44Speaker 1: is a replicable like she she really I think she
- 30:47Speaker 1: hang onto her husband's girls and I think she has
- 30:51Speaker 1: I think she when she reads a script because she
- 30:53Speaker 1: really is a sinophile like and when she reads a script. No,
- 30:57Speaker 1: I've seen the mc nicole Nicole get mentioned like teacher
- 31:06Speaker 1: film studies. I would love that. But when when you
- 31:09Speaker 1: when she reads a script, you can tell that she's
- 31:12Speaker 1: attracted to a certain kind of woman that's holding onto
- 31:15Speaker 1: something feels good, feels good in a place like this.
- 31:19Speaker 1: The script that she wrote, she wrote the script, she directed,
- 31:24Speaker 1: she produced. She was the big boy, she was the
- 31:28Speaker 1: grip um. Anyways, Uh, Stepford Wives, Oh my god that
- 31:34Speaker 1: I love Stepford Wives. It's like not a great movie,
- 31:39Speaker 1: but I think it performed. I think at the time
- 31:41Speaker 1: it was critically a lambastad because it's very different from
- 31:46Speaker 1: the source material. It was directed by Frank Oz who
- 31:50Speaker 1: he was like the muppets. He did all the voices
- 31:54Speaker 1: of a lot of them. He did the voice of Yoda.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I believe um end the end and like the original
- 32:03Speaker 1: short story that The Stafford Wives that is based off
- 32:06Speaker 1: of is very much like a thriller horror. It has
- 32:09Speaker 1: a very bleak ending, and the Stafford Wives remake is
- 32:14Speaker 1: not to that at all. And it's a comedy. It's
- 32:16Speaker 1: an amazing remake. It's amazing. It's so fun, and I
- 32:20Speaker 1: think it is. I don't know that I would call
- 32:23Speaker 1: it like a cult classic because I don't think it's
- 32:26Speaker 1: been like reclaimed or like is beloved in a different
- 32:29Speaker 1: way than how it was initially received. But I really
- 32:32Speaker 1: liked it when it came out. I think it's super fun.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Nicole Kidman's performance in it as like the executive who
- 32:40Speaker 1: has like a mental breakdown the two different cells. The
- 32:42Speaker 1: two different cells is I think really good and like
- 32:46Speaker 1: Bet Midler is so great close is so good. In
- 32:51Speaker 1: it is Tony Christopher Walkin. There's another woman in the movie.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I can it's Bett Midler, the guy fay Faye. Oh yeah.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Faith Hill is one of the steps. Okay, that's crazy, um,
- 33:06Speaker 1: but yeah, that's the other thing. Is like Faith Hill
- 33:09Speaker 1: who is part of Nicole Kidman Cannon because her song
- 33:13Speaker 1: this Kiss is prominently featured in Practical Magic. It is
- 33:17Speaker 1: the soundtracks lab the soundtrack and Prattrack Magic is one
- 33:20Speaker 1: of the best soundtracks ever created. But her song um
- 33:22Speaker 1: this kiss or maybe it's just kiss um is in
- 33:26Speaker 1: the scene where Sally like is spell abound to meeting
- 33:30Speaker 1: her husband who dies. Yeah, and you know it's so
- 33:33Speaker 1: crazy now because you and I like jotted down like
- 33:35Speaker 1: some some of Nicole Kiman's things that we wanted to
- 33:37Speaker 1: talk about and like down the line between Practical Magic
- 33:41Speaker 1: the hours of Stepford Wives, like the Big Guils boy erased.
- 33:45Speaker 1: It's like all these like dark these like dark dark
- 33:49Speaker 1: dark kind of like women. And I think that Stepford
- 33:52Speaker 1: Wives is the kind of cartoonishness that comes out of
- 33:55Speaker 1: that is something that Nicole Kidman still loves to do.
- 33:59Speaker 1: And I think the um when I think about when
- 34:02Speaker 1: she's kind of having fun in something like maybe, I
- 34:07Speaker 1: don't know nine. Did you watch nine? Never seen nine? Really? Yeah,
- 34:12Speaker 1: you've never seen Fergie? Do? Do you know? Do you know?
- 34:19Speaker 1: Like what? Okay, so yeah, I know that, Yes I do.
- 34:22Speaker 1: She's like an old Italian whore. She's an old Italian
- 34:25Speaker 1: hooker that I guess has sex with like a like
- 34:28Speaker 1: a nine year old with a young Fellini, a young Felini. Yeah,
- 34:32Speaker 1: I mean I actually don't. I didn't really see the
- 34:34Speaker 1: movies about Felini. Yeah. Wow, that actually that isn't that
- 34:37Speaker 1: is all a listers that movie, Kate Hudson, Kate Hudson,
- 34:42Speaker 1: Nicole Kinman, Penelope Cruise. Maybe I should watch it. It's
- 34:45Speaker 1: it's a notoriously terrible film, Okay, but we should watch
- 34:49Speaker 1: because it's because it's part of the like post post
- 34:53Speaker 1: Mulan Rouge and Chicago like it was trying to be
- 34:56Speaker 1: of movie musicals that happened for a couple of years
- 34:59Speaker 1: and that like we're still kind of trying to make
- 35:03Speaker 1: happen and it's still really not working and Nicole Kidman
- 35:06Speaker 1: has been in a few of let Me Tell You
- 35:07Speaker 1: It was post Happy for You, another Nicole vehicle, and
- 35:11Speaker 1: another movie where she sings never seen Happy Feet. She
- 35:14Speaker 1: sings good. She has a great voice. I loved her
- 35:19Speaker 1: in the prom I loved give It some sas. I
- 35:22Speaker 1: loved her in the undoing opening credits. My God, who
- 35:28Speaker 1: made her do that? She I don't think anyone made
- 35:31Speaker 1: her do that. I think she said, you know, you
- 35:33Speaker 1: know what we would be great? She said, R and R.
- 35:40Speaker 1: We don't have We don't have a theme song yet.
- 35:43Speaker 1: You know what? You know? Its song I love? Is
- 35:44Speaker 1: that one song you ever heard? That cop and this
- 35:46Speaker 1: song is your favorite song? Insane Karen saying that she
- 35:51Speaker 1: sings that theme song and you the thing. The reason
- 35:54Speaker 1: it's insane is because there's a suspended tension in that
- 35:58Speaker 1: show that is I think really well done, even though
- 36:01Speaker 1: the show is not, has a terrible ending that you
- 36:04Speaker 1: think is going to pay off and have something to
- 36:07Speaker 1: do with the credits. You're you when you watch the
- 36:10Speaker 1: opening credits, you're like, this is so so Arendom that
- 36:13Speaker 1: you're like, this has to have some sort of meaning
- 36:17Speaker 1: at the end of the show, and at no point
- 36:20Speaker 1: does it ever know nothing, there's there's absolutely there's absolutely
- 36:28Speaker 1: zero reason for the thing the for Nicle getting into
- 36:32Speaker 1: saying dream a little dream of me. It makes no
- 36:35Speaker 1: sense whatsoever away from them because I know I'm being hysterical,
- 36:40Speaker 1: but there's no reason for it to happen. And like,
- 36:44Speaker 1: just like much of what's in that show, there's like
- 36:47Speaker 1: the weird like lesbian kiss in the first episode. Yeah,
- 36:51Speaker 1: Phoebe is losing it in the booth because that lesbian
- 36:54Speaker 1: kiss was like I wouldn't want to say gay baby
- 36:56Speaker 1: because everyone calls everything gay baby, but I feel like
- 36:59Speaker 1: the what did I have to do with anything? Um? Anyway,
- 37:02Speaker 1: but it was it was I think it was more
- 37:04Speaker 1: a red herring. I think it was very intentionally a
- 37:06Speaker 1: red herring and not gay baiting. Just red Yeah, yeah,
- 37:09Speaker 1: exactly of Swedish fish. But um, it's it. But I
- 37:13Speaker 1: think actually Nicole Kidman singing the credits is emblematic of
- 37:17Speaker 1: this thing that she does, which is like a choice,
- 37:21Speaker 1: a choice. She makes a lot of choices. It's like
- 37:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna be in this AMC commercial, I'm going to
- 37:27Speaker 1: be in Happy Feed, I'm going to do this like
- 37:30Speaker 1: kind of whack Adoodle glad real character in Nine Perfect Strangers.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I'm going to be Alexander scars Guard's mom and the
- 37:38Speaker 1: Northman after I played as a wife in Big Little Eyes.
- 37:42Speaker 1: I mean, okay, which is kind of hot. It is hot,
- 37:45Speaker 1: it is hot. And let me tell you her mom, mommy, mommy,
- 37:49Speaker 1: I haven't seen Aquaman. You said she has a good
- 37:51Speaker 1: fight for she does for the coin. I mean the
- 37:55Speaker 1: same thing that's happy feed. It's like you did that
- 37:57Speaker 1: for the coin. I also wonder if some of it
- 37:59Speaker 1: is about her legacy and like, you know, she's making
- 38:05Speaker 1: movies in every quadrant, you know, in the way that
- 38:09Speaker 1: we think about film, like for she's making movies for
- 38:12Speaker 1: every kind of audience. She wants to be a star forever,
- 38:17Speaker 1: not even wants to be She is the quintessential star
- 38:20Speaker 1: and the quintessential actress, like both. I think, like in
- 38:25Speaker 1: the pantheon of people like really it's the big Little
- 38:29Speaker 1: Lies girlies like Nicole Kidman is Meryl level. Yeah, she
- 38:33Speaker 1: has Merrill level, and I think you know, um, she
- 38:36Speaker 1: and her team take pride in her range. You know,
- 38:39Speaker 1: even if she is playing a lot of the same women,
- 38:43Speaker 1: it's still the the rain and that is not to
- 38:46Speaker 1: say she doesn't get it wrong. Sometimes she's been in
- 38:48Speaker 1: some big mega flop Doudocacas, What Bewitched, the Bewitched Dream,
- 38:54Speaker 1: But she started with Will Ferrell, which I did used
- 38:58Speaker 1: to own on DVD and I would watch a lot
- 39:00Speaker 1: and christ and China was in it too. What we're
- 39:16Speaker 1: talking about right now is the kid Massans, you know,
- 39:20Speaker 1: isn't an, but like she did kind of go away
- 39:23Speaker 1: for a while, or at least she had a period
- 39:25Speaker 1: where she was not making the like caliber projects that
- 39:29Speaker 1: she is now, certainly not at the volume and like
- 39:34Speaker 1: rapidity that she is now. I would say, like the Mids,
- 39:40Speaker 1: she she was kind of gone for a while. And
- 39:42Speaker 1: I think and Big Little Lies was definitely the return,
- 39:47Speaker 1: That's what I was going to say. I mean, I
- 39:49Speaker 1: don't know, I feel like it might be a little um,
- 39:53Speaker 1: I think it might be a little flattening to call
- 39:55Speaker 1: it a return per se, but it definitely did change
- 40:00Speaker 1: her cultural reception. Well, it was also a different medium.
- 40:04Speaker 1: It was the first time she had done TV, and
- 40:06Speaker 1: I do think I think you might have said before,
- 40:08Speaker 1: maybe even before we started recording, Big Little Lies is
- 40:11Speaker 1: the thing that has ushered in this era of prestige
- 40:16Speaker 1: prestige TV of movie stars, Oscar winners doing these prestige
- 40:22Speaker 1: projects like for the first time, for the first time
- 40:24Speaker 1: Big Little Eyes, was it? Yeah? Was it? And I
- 40:27Speaker 1: think that I it's interesting to now watch her for
- 40:30Speaker 1: ray into more miniseries like the undoing Nine Perfect Strangers,
- 40:33Speaker 1: this upcoming show roar that we're gonna watch like it.
- 40:37Speaker 1: I think that that is like, um, you know, it's
- 40:41Speaker 1: it's a lot of it's more risks, it's more mrs.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Like you didn't watch Nine Perfect Strangers. But like the
- 40:46Speaker 1: top line, like she plays a wellness retreat kind of
- 40:49Speaker 1: cult leader that non consensually drugs all of the people
- 40:54Speaker 1: that have like come to this like retreat or whatever. Yeah,
- 40:58Speaker 1: and like you know, unfortunate, um tonally, the the show
- 41:02Speaker 1: doesn't really know where it's at all. Nine of these
- 41:05Speaker 1: strangers are kind of in different shows. Like I think
- 41:09Speaker 1: that Melissa McCarthy, who I think kind of gives the
- 41:11Speaker 1: best performance in the show, maybe better than Nicole's in
- 41:14Speaker 1: my opinion, um is in a different show than Nicole
- 41:16Speaker 1: is in a different show than that one guy from
- 41:19Speaker 1: Will and Grace is who I think is also very good,
- 41:21Speaker 1: but in a different show. They're all totally in different shows,
- 41:24Speaker 1: and I think that kind of convolutes what they're trying
- 41:27Speaker 1: to do. And I think it's actually remarkable that they're
- 41:29Speaker 1: getting a second season. But it must be a Nicole thing. Anyways,
- 41:32Speaker 1: Nicole wears this gladril ass wig that does not get
- 41:37Speaker 1: wet properly, and yet she is constantly wet in this
- 41:42Speaker 1: TV show in pools, in bodies of water, come emerging
- 41:47Speaker 1: out of it with this wet, escaladrial wig that looks
- 41:50Speaker 1: bad whin wet, but it's like, you are get a
- 41:54Speaker 1: better wig. The story of Nicole Kidman is the story
- 41:59Speaker 1: of Way, and it's a It's a very strange story
- 42:02Speaker 1: because there was a press conference for the film Destroyer
- 42:07Speaker 1: in which Nicole Kiman was a very strange wig and
- 42:10Speaker 1: a journalist, and I think, I don't like the way
- 42:12Speaker 1: this is framed. I'm reading it on the Daily Mail.
- 42:15Speaker 1: But um, the journalist, I think, wanted to ask her,
- 42:18Speaker 1: like a fun question to rank her favorite wigs, and
- 42:21Speaker 1: Nicole Kiman refused to answer it and says she was
- 42:24Speaker 1: shutting it down. If you're in a press conference and
- 42:27Speaker 1: you're a journalist, especially a young journalist, don't do a
- 42:31Speaker 1: fucking fun question. I'm sorry, don't know. But also if
- 42:34Speaker 1: your celebrity and you've it's like I think she I
- 42:38Speaker 1: don't and and listen, I don't think this is a
- 42:41Speaker 1: question that would be asked to a mail no celebrity,
- 42:46Speaker 1: And I'm sure that's part of what's like sensitive about
- 42:49Speaker 1: it for her, And like, of course this has sparked
- 42:51Speaker 1: all these crazy theories about Nicole Kiman being bald or whatever,
- 42:55Speaker 1: and I don't think that's true. I think that just
- 42:56Speaker 1: like a lot of actresses, a lot of pop stars,
- 42:59Speaker 1: like it's just so much easier to wear a wig
- 43:01Speaker 1: for a project than to like put your hair through
- 43:04Speaker 1: the trauma of being styled and died in all of
- 43:08Speaker 1: these things. But I think like she just didn't want
- 43:11Speaker 1: to talk about it, and like I guess she shouldn't
- 43:15Speaker 1: have to, but also like she shouldn't have treated it
- 43:18Speaker 1: like he was coming for her, like it's just someone
- 43:22Speaker 1: trying to get like a fun click baity article out
- 43:25Speaker 1: of that kind of interview. But here's the thing, that's
- 43:28Speaker 1: what that's what I said, is like when when I
- 43:30Speaker 1: say don't ask the fun question in a press conference,
- 43:33Speaker 1: I mean a press conference, Like it's like a public
- 43:36Speaker 1: platform in front of an audience, to me, is not
- 43:39Speaker 1: the place to do that. A junket or a one
- 43:41Speaker 1: on one interview is when you do those like kind
- 43:44Speaker 1: of fun, big maybe big swing questions and I don't
- 43:47Speaker 1: always work out. Well, That's what I was gonna say
- 43:50Speaker 1: is I actually didn't know that prerecord. I didn't know
- 43:53Speaker 1: that story about the wig the wig question. And I
- 43:56Speaker 1: said to you, I said, Rose in a in an
- 43:59Speaker 1: alternate life, you were kicked out. I absolutely was the
- 44:03Speaker 1: one who asked that question, because you and I have
- 44:06Speaker 1: before brainstormed an article out about Nicole Kidman's wigs, like
- 44:10Speaker 1: we've we've already we've talked about doing something. There's definitely
- 44:14Speaker 1: like some kind of buzz feed list ranking Nicole kid
- 44:18Speaker 1: there's probably an out dot com article with your name
- 44:21Speaker 1: on it. Probably don't look it up, virgins, please do
- 44:24Speaker 1: that search for it. But yeah, but what is your
- 44:27Speaker 1: favorite Nicole Kidman wig? Though? I mean the Mulan Rouge
- 44:30Speaker 1: hair is cannon, but I think that's her hair. But
- 44:34Speaker 1: I I think that's her. That's still the era where
- 44:37Speaker 1: it was her hair, plus lots of extensions. Really yeah, really,
- 44:42Speaker 1: I think so we have to look that up that
- 44:44Speaker 1: should be fact checked. I think is boy erased. I
- 44:49Speaker 1: think I love her Southern like comfort mom. I can't
- 44:54Speaker 1: believe you've watched boy or Race, But also I can
- 44:57Speaker 1: because I'm sure some article I've so gared. Conley is
- 45:01Speaker 1: like a friend of mine, and so I really like
- 45:03Speaker 1: the Everything about that film was very exciting to watch
- 45:08Speaker 1: his life put on screen. Is like, was absolutely surreal experience.
- 45:13Speaker 1: You're like, oh my god, Nicole Kidman is playing your mom.
- 45:17Speaker 1: But something that I feel like is very telling about um,
- 45:21Speaker 1: the staying power of Nicole is behind the scenes. I've
- 45:25Speaker 1: never heard a bad story about her. Everyone loves working
- 45:30Speaker 1: everyone loves working with her. He has told me so
- 45:32Speaker 1: many stories about how she got to know his mom
- 45:34Speaker 1: in a really deep way and how that just doesn't
- 45:37Speaker 1: always happen. You know Allah Gaga in um you know
- 45:41Speaker 1: House of Gucci, which, like Gaga is also an ad
- 45:44Speaker 1: actress where I will see everything she will ever be
- 45:46Speaker 1: in time, even though she doesn't have you know, the
- 45:49Speaker 1: catalog yet. Um. But yeah, I think that there's something
- 45:53Speaker 1: about how you know Nicole Kim and can find empathy
- 45:57Speaker 1: in a lot of different people that we might otherwise
- 46:00Speaker 1: render a monster. You know, a woman who is beholden
- 46:04Speaker 1: to a very homophobic Baptist husband has a lot of
- 46:09Speaker 1: complicity that is really ugly and it's not a character
- 46:11Speaker 1: you really want to empathize with. And yet Nicole Kidman
- 46:14Speaker 1: saw that and knew where the humanity was. And so
- 46:18Speaker 1: for Nicole Kiman to play you know, a murderer in
- 46:22Speaker 1: The Beguiled, or to play you know, um you know
- 46:26Speaker 1: other times or like The Guild is so good. I
- 46:29Speaker 1: didn't see it when it first came out, and I
- 46:31Speaker 1: only watched it like somewhat recently. I think maybe sometime
- 46:34Speaker 1: last year. It's so fun and it has it is
- 46:37Speaker 1: stacked with the girls, it's Nicole Kiki, um l Fanning.
- 46:44Speaker 1: It's just like it's basically virgin suicides like on a
- 46:47Speaker 1: planet because it's Sofia Coppola. Oh it is so it's
- 46:51Speaker 1: literally that. So anyways, um uh nine Pervic Strangers, I
- 46:56Speaker 1: think is like that kind of matriarch like get the hatch,
- 47:00Speaker 1: Like I mean, what it doesn't you have like a
- 47:01Speaker 1: Southern genteel accent and that, But what does she say
- 47:05Speaker 1: something about go get the hatchet? It's the trailer became
- 47:08Speaker 1: to cut Colin Farrell's leg off. Oh, is that what happens?
- 47:13Speaker 1: But she I think this is spoiler alert. I think
- 47:16Speaker 1: what happens is his leg doesn't actually need to be
- 47:19Speaker 1: cut off, but because he hit on two of her daughters,
- 47:24Speaker 1: she was like, fuck this, because he's like he like
- 47:27Speaker 1: comes to their houses during the Civil War and he
- 47:30Speaker 1: like strikes up a romance with Kirsten Dunce. But then
- 47:33Speaker 1: Fox Alfanic yes, and he needs help. He's like basically
- 47:36Speaker 1: seeking refuge at this plantation home and so they take him,
- 47:40Speaker 1: you know, into their under their care, and he takes
- 47:42Speaker 1: advantage of that by becoming kind of a predator, and
- 47:44Speaker 1: so Nicole Kinman chops his leg off, which is which
- 47:47Speaker 1: is iconic. I do think we should like dive into
- 48:04Speaker 1: Big Little Lies because I think Big Little Lies is
- 48:10Speaker 1: the thing that has most re contextualized Nicole for the
- 48:15Speaker 1: current moment and probably where probably like gen Z knows
- 48:19Speaker 1: her from the most um and I do think it
- 48:22Speaker 1: is it's hard to say like this is Nicole Kidman's
- 48:26Speaker 1: best work or among her best work, but it really is.
- 48:29Speaker 1: It is, and it also like set the press, I mean,
- 48:31Speaker 1: as we were saying, like the golden age of of
- 48:34Speaker 1: of prestige TV, and I think it's like signaled to
- 48:37Speaker 1: all these A list actors that they could go do
- 48:40Speaker 1: a mini series, win a bunch of awards, and then
- 48:43Speaker 1: like I don't know, maybe like get up there, you
- 48:47Speaker 1: know whatever they're like there you know rate is or
- 48:51Speaker 1: like the spawn con that they get to do or whatever.
- 48:54Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of, like what there is to
- 48:56Speaker 1: add to a conversation of Big Little Lies. You know
- 48:59Speaker 1: it hasn't already been talked about because yeah, but for me,
- 49:03Speaker 1: like the thing is, like I this is the reason
- 49:06Speaker 1: I love Nancy Myers movies, but my favorite favorite thing
- 49:10Speaker 1: that I will always watch is a show or movie
- 49:13Speaker 1: about wealthy white women in a moment of emotional crisis. Well,
- 49:17Speaker 1: it was very weird to see Nicole play a victim
- 49:21Speaker 1: because I think a lot of her films she has
- 49:24Speaker 1: really stood in a place of strength um and has
- 49:27Speaker 1: been the heroine UM And like you know, she is
- 49:30Speaker 1: in a way in Big Little Eyes, and I think
- 49:32Speaker 1: in season two you get to see her take a
- 49:33Speaker 1: lot more agency for herself, and like, you know, Season
- 49:37Speaker 1: two I think is very polarizing because a lot of
- 49:39Speaker 1: us kind of wished that it didn't happen because of
- 49:43Speaker 1: how perfect Season one was, but then like, who's going
- 49:46Speaker 1: to say no to more? And I think it's funny
- 49:48Speaker 1: because as we've established that her kind of typecasting is um, dark, depressed, sexpot,
- 49:55Speaker 1: big little lies, is the um kind of like you
- 49:59Speaker 1: know and obstillation of that, and I think that, um
- 50:03Speaker 1: one of the most interesting parts of the show to
- 50:05Speaker 1: me was the murkiness in how Nicole Kidman was into
- 50:12Speaker 1: elements of their relationship that were abusive and that obviously
- 50:17Speaker 1: it became not you know, sexual after a certain point,
- 50:22Speaker 1: but in the beginning, you see the way that Nicole
- 50:26Speaker 1: provokes him because she is turned on by the fame,
- 50:30Speaker 1: and that's why it's so messy and and like I think,
- 50:34Speaker 1: you know, like I don't want to speak for you know,
- 50:37Speaker 1: victims of domestic abuse, but I'm sure that like for
- 50:41Speaker 1: a lot of people who you know are like a
- 50:45Speaker 1: bit more massochistic, and like, I'm sure there are people
- 50:49Speaker 1: where those lines on their own relationships are very blurry,
- 50:52Speaker 1: and I don't think that that is something we had
- 50:54Speaker 1: seen portrayed by that way, And like, I don't think
- 50:58Speaker 1: there's something about Nicole Kidman being the one to do it,
- 51:02Speaker 1: like seeing that kind of like violence being enacted upon
- 51:07Speaker 1: her and also her engaging in that violence herself, because
- 51:10Speaker 1: there are times early in that season where she's the
- 51:12Speaker 1: one who provokes him or at least like it's very
- 51:16Speaker 1: complicit in like the beginning of their violent interaction, and
- 51:19Speaker 1: then he escalates it to another level. Yeah, And like
- 51:22Speaker 1: the thing about this cast as well as like no
- 51:25Speaker 1: one else could play I mean Shale Woodley, like a
- 51:28Speaker 1: lot of people can play, but three, it's like no one.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Like the only other person that I think can do
- 51:34Speaker 1: a version of what Nicole does in these roles is
- 51:37Speaker 1: maybe like a Glenn Close. But Glenn is not a
- 51:40Speaker 1: sexpot anymore, and she doesn't have an oscar. Yeah, she will,
- 51:43Speaker 1: she will. She I really think she will. I really
- 51:47Speaker 1: think she will. She she deserves and if not, she'll get,
- 51:49Speaker 1: you know, a lifetime achievement oscar. You know, I think
- 51:52Speaker 1: that would be Yeah, but a lot of greats have
- 51:55Speaker 1: got have never gotten award and got like a life. Yeah.
- 51:57Speaker 1: But like the the story, worry around Glenn not getting
- 52:01Speaker 1: it is so much different than for everybody or losing
- 52:04Speaker 1: to share and then Gaga. I wish she didn't lose
- 52:08Speaker 1: to Gaga. She but she probably was outright. Um, Okay,
- 52:15Speaker 1: I haven't seen Being the Ricardos because Nicole being in
- 52:19Speaker 1: Being the Ricardos and being Lucy was such a meme
- 52:22Speaker 1: before the movie came out, and the whole conversation around
- 52:25Speaker 1: it was how miscast she was, how she was too
- 52:28Speaker 1: old to play her, like all this stuff. You know.
- 52:30Speaker 1: There was that first photo of her in the wig
- 52:32Speaker 1: that everyone laughed at. It was hilarious. And then the
- 52:34Speaker 1: movie came out and the only things I heard about
- 52:36Speaker 1: it were how good she was she But I will
- 52:40Speaker 1: never watch it. Um, I don't. I don't think it's
- 52:42Speaker 1: an amazing movie. I think that, Um. I mean, I
- 52:46Speaker 1: think Aaron Stark is like an an infantesimal like man baby,
- 52:50Speaker 1: like he just doesn't I don't know, I just like
- 52:52Speaker 1: don't appreciate like a lot of his writing. And I
- 52:54Speaker 1: think that this movie specifically is very indulgent in what
- 52:57Speaker 1: it invents, Like it feels like fan and fiction. Um,
- 53:01Speaker 1: but it's still a very interesting um portrayal of basically,
- 53:05Speaker 1: Lucy old Ball is this shrewd, egomaniacal businesswoman who has
- 53:10Speaker 1: an O C D level to attention that kind of
- 53:15Speaker 1: overworks everyone else, and that and she's kind of a genius,
- 53:18Speaker 1: Like she's a comedic salant, and I think Nicole does
- 53:21Speaker 1: that very well. And I also think that role specifically
- 53:24Speaker 1: is actually very different from a lot of other roles
- 53:28Speaker 1: she played, because not often is Nicole mean in movies.
- 53:32Speaker 1: She's usually dark and depressed, but not as much mean,
- 53:36Speaker 1: And in in this she is kind of cruel. You
- 53:38Speaker 1: know what movie she was mean and that we did
- 53:40Speaker 1: gloss over, which I mean, I'm not surprised about The
- 53:43Speaker 1: Golden Compass. Did you ever see that? Know? But I
- 53:46Speaker 1: heard the book slap because they're about like the destruction
- 53:49Speaker 1: of God. Yeah, there was. There was a very badly
- 53:52Speaker 1: received kind of flop adaptation of this Philip Pullman book series.
- 53:56Speaker 1: The Golden Compass was that first HBO. No no, no,
- 54:00Speaker 1: So there has been in recent years a new adaptation
- 54:04Speaker 1: of it that's a TV series, which also flopped. No,
- 54:07Speaker 1: I think it's I think it's pretty I watched a
- 54:10Speaker 1: couple episodes of the first season and I thought it
- 54:12Speaker 1: was pretty good, but I lost interest. But the movie
- 54:14Speaker 1: that came out in the early adds, it was definitely
- 54:18Speaker 1: while I was in high school, because I remember going
- 54:20Speaker 1: to see it like after school one day or maybe
- 54:22Speaker 1: I skipped class and saw it, um and she's the
- 54:25Speaker 1: villain in it, and she is like the best part
- 54:27Speaker 1: of the movie. She's so mean and like glamorous, which
- 54:31Speaker 1: I think is like a very good sweet spot. It
- 54:35Speaker 1: is a good sweet spot for her. Um with with
- 54:38Speaker 1: being the Ricardo's, I think the meanness like works like
- 54:42Speaker 1: it's it's it's you can't stop watching it. But that's
- 54:44Speaker 1: kind of a Nicole thing. Like anytime she's on screen,
- 54:47Speaker 1: you're so entrance. She has so much fucking charisma, uniqueness,
- 54:52Speaker 1: nerve and talent. Period. When is she going to guest
- 54:54Speaker 1: judge on drag Race? We do Night of at that
- 55:00Speaker 1: was in Nicole, that would be me. I mean they
- 55:03Speaker 1: already did this move on Rouge spoof on this season,
- 55:05Speaker 1: which was such they should have gotten like a call
- 55:08Speaker 1: in message from her, Yeah, they should have. If I
- 55:11Speaker 1: could give my quick take on being the Ricardo's, I
- 55:14Speaker 1: think you would hate it. But at the end of
- 55:17Speaker 1: the day, like they're like Javier bread M and Nicole
- 55:20Speaker 1: Kimmen are just like kind of hot. They just have
- 55:22Speaker 1: hot energy, and I think that that that it just
- 55:25Speaker 1: like lends itself. Sometimes I think about the fact that
- 55:27Speaker 1: Javier Bardem is married to Penelope Crews, and I just
- 55:30Speaker 1: like spontaneously Climax does Nicole like exclusively, like just like
- 55:34Speaker 1: work with hot prestige actors, Like why wouldn't she She
- 55:38Speaker 1: in Destroyer, which is like not a good movie and
- 55:41Speaker 1: she looks so disgusting in it. Her love interest is
- 55:44Speaker 1: Sebastian stand Oh my god. Yeah. You know this brings
- 55:48Speaker 1: us to the current day of Nicole, which is you know,
- 55:53Speaker 1: I think it's like the thing that she's currently the
- 55:55Speaker 1: most famous and beloved for. I don't know if we're
- 55:59Speaker 1: kind of saying, but it is certainly a transcendent cultural object.
- 56:03Speaker 1: It's just amazing them how saturated she is in pop
- 56:08Speaker 1: culture that she can at the same time be doing
- 56:12Speaker 1: an Oscar campaign, um, doing a like a twenty four
- 56:18Speaker 1: movie that in which she co stars with Bjork and

- 56:55Speaker 1: a star. But I'm saying that star quality requires a
- 56:59Speaker 1: lot of off camera shenanigans. And she is she quiet, no, no, no,
- 57:04Speaker 1: no no, she's a very she's very active on Instagram
- 57:08Speaker 1: what yes, she posts like, oh my god, I don't

- 57:40Speaker 1: she doesn't. She's never open. Someone is running it for her.
