Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / How to Watch SpaceX Starship Launch
Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody, welcome back to the show.
- 0:03Today's episode is going to be a little bit different.
- 0:06We're going to be talking about Brownsville, Texas and Starbase
- 0:10Texas, where SpaceX has their starship facility where they
- 0:16build starships and where they're going to apparently
- 0:20launch a Starship sometime this summer.
- 0:22Super heavy summer is happening. And if you want to be a part of
- 0:27that, that's what this podcast is all about.
- 0:30So, I spent about nine months nine to ten months down at
- 0:34Starbase, I was a correspondent down there.
- 0:37I filmed I did live streams down there.
- 0:41I met amazing. Amazing people down there, but
- 0:44during my time there, I realized that there's a lot of people
- 0:48from out of town. They come to visit and they want
- 0:52to see elon's giant rocket. This thing is 400 feet tall,
- 0:55it's going to be the most powerful in the largest rocket
- 0:59that Humanity has ever seen. It's absolutely gigantic and
- 1:05literally nothing I've ever seen in my life.
- 1:07I've done some really cool stuff in my life and I'm not, this is
- 1:12not a brag, you know, I've done some really cool stuff but I
- 1:17used to be a skateboarder like a like a semi-pro amateur
- 1:22skateboarder kind of guy and I would travel all over the
- 1:25country and all over the US and do demonstrations and go to
- 1:30different places and film skateboard.
- 1:32Movies and things like that, and I'm out of that now.
- 1:35But at one point in my life, I went to the demonstration with
- 1:39Tony Hawk, I was part of the show and during that show, it
- 1:44was for the secret skatepark tour.
- 1:47So back in the day, it was way back in the day, but Tony Hawk
- 1:50gave me a high five. After I did my trick.
- 1:53So Tony Hawk is a legendary skateboarder and if he gives you
- 1:57props for anything, that's like the biggest compliment anybody
- 2:00could ever give a skateboarder like, Literally the top of the
- 2:04top of the top, the highest dude.
- 2:05It's like if Michael Jordan if you're shooting three free
- 2:08throws with Michael Jordan and it gives you a high five and
- 2:10tells you that you're good. That's one of those things that
- 2:13you're like, oh man, that's the coolest thing I've ever done,
- 2:16you know, that's literally the coolest thing.
- 2:18I did a front blunt on an extension in a bowl and it was,
- 2:23you know, it was like a pretty big extension.
- 2:25And I've never really been good at front blunt, but I did it in
- 2:27front of Tony. I came up off the deck.
- 2:29I just like I'm like run was done.
- 2:31He's Oh hey, that was a sick. Front blunt.
- 2:34Gave me a little high five and I was like cool that just made my
- 2:41life, you know, but the like skiing Starship is it's it's not
- 2:51comparable there's a different there's a whole different
- 2:55feeling than that like that Tony Hawk thing that only lasted a
- 2:59minute, you know, a couple minutes and like I still
- 3:01remember it to this day because Really cool but going to see
- 3:05Starship going to see the facility spend some time there,
- 3:09you know, spend a day or two there and you'll see the future
- 3:13of humanity. So it means a lot more to a lot
- 3:17more people than say, somebody like Tony Hawk who's a sports
- 3:20hero. So because this is basically how
- 3:25we're going to send people to Mars and to the Moon, you know,
- 3:29the Starship is going to be part of the hls program.
- 3:32The human Landing system that will be taking people to the
- 3:36surface of the Moon. And will be eventually taking
- 3:41people to the surface of Mars and cargo to both places as
- 3:45well. And also launching the next
- 3:47batch of starlink satellites certainly 2.0 and that will
- 3:53change Communications on Earth forever.
- 3:55So this giant ship is going to be one of those things that may
- 4:01change Humanity as a whole. Now getting to Brownsville
- 4:07getting to South Padre Island and getting to places where you
- 4:12can actually see the Starship. I'm going to, I'm going to give
- 4:15you a little rundown of what's going to happen when you get to
- 4:18that area, how to get there and how to watch the launch.
- 4:23Okay? So there's thousands of people
- 4:26that will come from all over the world to see this rocket, but
- 4:30also, the launch is going to be crazy because people from all
- 4:33over the world. Old want to see the Big Show,
- 4:35you know, like if you're just down there on the side of the
- 4:37road and you're watching them build it that's one thing.
- 4:39But if you're going to, if you want to see the most powerful
- 4:43rocket that's ever been built launch, that's a big show.
- 4:48It's not going to be NASA. Big mind you, it's not going to
- 4:50be NASA big, so masses. SLS rocket is going to be
- 4:53launching late, August early, September of this year down at
- 4:58the cape, but that's going to be huge.
- 5:01There's probably going to be a million people flooding into
- 5:03that area to see this rocket launch.
- 5:05It's the next moon rocket. So million people coming to
- 5:09Orlando, like they're kind of used to that traffic.
- 5:12You know, it's Disney and NASA has a, you know, they're they
- 5:16have facilities for that, right? They have a huge city right
- 5:20there that you can get anything. You ever wanted, literally
- 5:24anything ever wanted ever from any gas station?
- 5:28Basically, you can get anything. NASA related or, you know,
- 5:34space-related any place around there, so they're ready for it.
- 5:37They have big roads, you know, they have a nice wide roads and
- 5:39they have the whole facility for viewing.
- 5:45These rocket launches SpaceX doesn't have any that
- 5:48infrastructure Space X is is a Skunk Works down there.
- 5:52There's it's in the middle of desert and there's one road that
- 5:55goes in one road that goes out. It's a 25-mile this show is
- 5:58brought to you by back. Lay's, I use back place to
- 6:01backup my podcast, my video files, all of my writing stuff
- 6:05and all my photos. And you get unlimited computer
- 6:07backup, for Macs and PCs for just $7 a month.
- 6:11You can backup your own documents photos videos.
- 6:13Drawings projects, all of your data and access your backed up
- 6:17data from anywhere in the world using the web app and you can
- 6:21access the files on your mobile to iOS Android apps all covered.
- 6:25And this is the cool part. This is my favorite part.
- 6:26You can restore it by mail, a hard drive will come to your
- 6:29house. With all your data shipped to
- 6:31your door, I could come to your business to and you can restore
- 6:34return refund program so you can buy a hard drive restore, send
- 6:38the hard drive back within 30 days and get a full refund.
- 6:41So basically they ship you this hard drive and then you ship it
- 6:45back and you don't ever pay for it which is the perfect program
- 6:48for somebody who has huge files. You don't want to waste days and
- 6:51days, downloading terabytes and teraflops of data.
- 6:55And if you're worried about accidentally, deleting your
- 6:56files to bucks extra month, you can increase your retention.
- 6:59Tension history to one year and I use it for all of my video.

- 7:52trial no credit card required go there sign up I you with it it's
- 7:57really powerful in his really easy to You so go to back
- 8:00plays.com / heel on backblaze.com Ilan,
- 8:06backblaze.com Ilan road is Highway for and you go east on
- 8:12Highway, 4 out of Brownsville and you just keep going until
- 8:16the very end of Highway 4 and at the end of Highway for is the
- 8:19Gulf of Mexico. It's about about a 30-minute
- 8:23drive you have to stop by You don't have to stop by you drive
- 8:28past. I should say the the border
- 8:31patrol at that point is slows. You down a little bit, you go
- 8:34from like 55 to 30 because you don't want to go really fast by
- 8:38the border patrol basically because the border patrol, you
- 8:41don't want to be a jerk. A lot of people out there,
- 8:43wandering around, you know, the border patrol officers inhabit
- 8:47that place, basically all day and all night, and they're
- 8:50walking around on the roads and stuff.
- 8:52So, just be careful, that's the only place you have to slow
- 8:55down, then the rest of it. 55 miles an hour, people go 80
- 8:59miles an hour down there, there's usually no speed traps
- 9:03but Word of Wisdom sometimes there are so make sure to go the
- 9:08speed limit and just watch out for potholes.
- 9:12That's one of the things that you should do is watch the roads
- 9:16because these roads were not built for the heavy trucks, that
- 9:19SpaceX brings down to that area. This used to be a vacation area
- 9:24and it was a retirement vacation area.
- 9:27And people with their little sedans and stuff would go out
- 9:29there and it's like I said before, it's 30 minutes out to
- 9:32the middle of nowhere. And the beach is beautiful.
- 9:36It's a cool little Beach. and there's nobody there, you know,
- 9:42usually there's a few people on the beach every day, but most
- 9:46people hundreds of people every day are building at SpaceX is
- 9:50Starbase So after about a 30-minute drive down, you'll
- 9:54start to see about a 25-minute drive down, you'll start to see
- 9:57the Starbase facility and on the left you'll see the bays in the
- 10:01production facility and on the right a little bit further down
- 10:03about a mile and a half down, you'll see the launch facility
- 10:06at the very end of Highway for now.
- 10:08Let's kind of back up a little bit because I want to get you to
- 10:14this area. First, you have to get to the
- 10:16Brownsville, South Padre, Island area, and get everything set up.
- 10:21So you can watch Watch the launch it.
- 10:24So let's go back a little bit and let's take those steps to
- 10:27get you down there. First, and foremost, if you're
- 10:30not from the area, and if you're not driving in, you'll be flying
- 10:33into Brownsville International Airport.
- 10:35That's B. R0 is the airport.
- 10:38Cord airport code to get to Brownsville International
- 10:41Airport from there. You won't have a vehicle either.
- 10:46You can choose Uber Lyft. There are Uber and Lyft drivers
- 10:49there. The city of Brownsville is
- 10:51around 200,000 people. And so there are people there
- 10:54that do Uber and Lyft. It though, it is how the middle
- 10:57of nowhere mind you. It is.
- 10:59It's very sparsely populated in that area because it's in the
- 11:04very southern tip of Texas right on the Gulf of Mexico.
- 11:08There's barely anything there but there is Oberon lift.
- 11:12So once you get off the airport or off the airplane, go to the
- 11:16airport, book your Uber book, your left, you can also rent a
- 11:19car and I would suggest If you can drive to rent your own car
- 11:25to go there because we're lying on an Uber or Lyft to get you
- 11:29there and dropping you off and then calling another Uber or
- 11:32Lyft. When you're down there, it's not
- 11:35going to happen. Unless you're going to stay with
- 11:38the Uber driver the whole time and they'll charge you for that
- 11:40whole thing. So you don't want to be charged
- 11:42unless you have the money. That's fine too, but if you want
- 11:45to drive, Rent A Car, rent a vehicle.
- 11:49At the airport and, you know, you're ready to go, you might be
- 11:52able to rent a turo, like a Tesla or something to.
- 11:55So, Totoro is available in area. T, you are.
- 11:59Oh, you can rent to somebody else's car to like a Rideshare,
- 12:02kind of thinker. Like, it was like Airbnb for
- 12:06cars. Basically t.
- 12:07U, r0 is the app and they have Tesla's and they have all sorts
- 12:10of high-end Vehicles if you're into that but more than likely
- 12:14you just want to run a normal car.
- 12:15So bring your car at the airport.
- 12:18Pick it up. And you're good to go.
- 12:21We're going to Uber and if you just want to see like if you
- 12:24just want to do like a little tour, Hooper might be the best
- 12:26way to go at that point. But if you're in the town for
- 12:31you know, which I would suggest go to the town for go to
- 12:34Brownsville South Padre Island area for a good 45 days.
- 12:39If you can a whole week, if you can because you'll see some cool
- 12:42stuff at Starbase. But for the reason of this
- 12:49podcast You want to see the launch, so you're going to need
- 12:53some time so kind of do seven days.
- 12:57I would say, seven days at least a week because sometimes things
- 13:00happen, sometimes they scrub the launch.
- 13:03Sometimes they just have to wait for something to happen.
- 13:09Maybe two weeks, three weeks, who knows?
- 13:12So they could be ready for a launch.
- 13:15And then they might scrub a launch because of a fuel line,
- 13:17they could scrub a launch because of a gas.
- 13:20Asket they could scrub a launch for any of the thousands of
- 13:23pieces that go into this rocket, so be ready for that to be ready
- 13:28for disappointment. I guess would be the best way to
- 13:30put it because you may not even see the launch.
- 13:33So put that in your head. If you go down there just think
- 13:37I might not see this launch. That's fine, but it would be
- 13:40cool if I did. So write your car at the at the
- 13:45airport and there's Bunches of hotels in Brownsville and the
- 13:49relatively The decently priced in Brownsville South Padre
- 13:55Island is a pretty good place to be as well because you'll be
- 13:59able to see the launch from South Padre Island at the
- 14:03Amphitheatre at the park. So South Padre Island.
- 14:07Amphitheatre is a really good spot to be because you can see
- 14:12across the gulf right directly at Starbase.
- 14:17And you can be out there with thousands of other people
- 14:18hanging out, is a Beautiful, beautiful area.
- 14:22Beautiful, absolutely stunning beautiful area, Wildlife boats,
- 14:27all sorts of stuff. There might be a no boat Zone
- 14:30and that area for the launch, but I think you'll be able to
- 14:34get into the Amphitheatre area, South Padre Island.
- 14:39So Google that up the Amphitheatre, South Padre Island
- 14:43and you have to pay. I think it's $12 to get into the
- 14:45park to get down there but it's like a really nice.
- 14:48Really cool chill. Nice.
- 14:51So if you go to the Amphitheatre, you be able to
- 14:54have a really good view of the SpaceX launch facility.
- 14:59Now there's another place you can check out the Jetties South
- 15:03Padre Island Tower in that area. There's parking and also the
- 15:08Jesus Christ of the fisherman, statue on South Padre Island.
- 15:13There's a South Beach parking area on the right side of the
- 15:17end of the east, side of the island and you should be able
- 15:20Able to see the launch from there but you won't be able.
- 15:23You might not be able to see the beginning of the launch from the
- 15:26South Beach. Parking area of Padre Island.
- 15:29It's like Channelview road. Yeah in the is La Blanca Park is
- 15:37LeBlanc. A beach you can go to the very
- 15:38southern tip of that and probably see it.
- 15:41And there's also the South Padre Island Jetties that you can
- 15:44check out. Now, there's sort of a there's
- 15:49some islands in between the Del Mar Beach area.
- 15:52The Braves Ellis Island State Park area, and also Los Brazos.
- 15:58And the Jetties Boca Chica, fishing Jetty might not be
- 16:01available. Because the there's a no-fly
- 16:06zone basically and I know people zone for this launch so it might
- 16:09be right at the cutoff. So I'm suggesting to stay within
- 16:15the whole like the main South Padre Island area is the Blanca
- 16:18Park is pretty cool too, you know, so you could check that
- 16:21out and also the US Coast Guard Station, that would be probably
- 16:25the coolest place to see but you might not be able to see
- 16:27everything. It would be pretty neat to be
- 16:28there though but yeah, the Jetties South Padre Island It
- 16:32would be pretty cool but also the Jesus Christ of the
- 16:35fisherman statue might be probably I think that's the one.
- 16:41I think that's the one you're going to have to go to but also
- 16:45yeah. The Cameron County Amphitheatre
- 16:47is pretty good. That's pretty chill spot.
- 16:49So if you got to go there, just to hang out, South Padre,
- 16:51Island, Cameron County Amphitheatre.
- 16:53That's a really cool spot. So those few places would be a
- 16:56really great place, just to be there in to watch it.
- 17:01And like I said before, there's hotels in Brownsville and South
- 17:04Padre Island a Brownsville. It's about a 30-minute trip from
- 17:07Brownsville to South Padre Island by car.
- 17:11So if you get into the South Padre, Brownsville South Padre,
- 17:15International Airport, you know, you're right in your car and get
- 17:20your hotel, I would suggest doing that first so you can drop
- 17:23off your stuff because you don't want to be down in the middle of
- 17:27nowhere at Boca, Chica Beach with all of your stuff.
- 17:31So go to a hotel first, drop that stuff off.
- 17:34Then go do your, you Boca Chica Boulevard Highway for stuff.
- 17:41So cool thing is there's a rocket facility down there and
- 17:46if you're just going to go like a few days before the launch,
- 17:50check it out. That's cool.
- 17:52But I'm going to give you a little survival tip here.
- 17:55And the survival tip is to bring everything with you.
- 17:58You would need if you're going to go kind of 30 minutes out
- 18:02into the middle of nowhere with no facilities.
- 18:04Right? So a good thing to do is when
- 18:06you get to the airport, or if you drive down, find someplace
- 18:10to go to the bathroom, it's a 30-minute drive down to Boca,
- 18:13Chica Beach down to SpaceX and a Starbase find a place to go to
- 18:17the bathroom before you go down. Because you're going to be,
- 18:20there is going to be a 30 minute drive, 30 minutes drive back.
- 18:23So that's one hour. Then you're going to be there
- 18:24for a while because you want to see everything, right?
- 18:26So maybe you're going to be there three hours.
- 18:28It's hot. It's very hot.
- 18:30Bring a big hat. Bring a big sun hat.
- 18:34Keep the sun off your face, keep the sun off your head and keep
- 18:37your head cool because you want to stay cool.
- 18:39It's going to be 90 degrees there.
- 18:41Probably 90, plus, and humidity. So you're going to be really hot
- 18:47out in the sun if you're cool with the Sun.
- 18:49That's great wear sunscreen too though in also, cover up your
- 18:52skin, where light flowy comfortable clothes, that let
- 18:57the air flow through your clothes and keep the sun off
- 19:00your skin. That's a great way to do it.
- 19:03The workers down there, you see them, they're not bare armed and
- 19:07bare-chested and you know, they don't wear shorts, they wear
- 19:10pants. They wear long sleeve shirts,
- 19:12they wear sunglasses and you'd know that they're working out
- 19:15there all day in the hundred plus degree heat inside.
- 19:19Of a stainless steel, container ship.
- 19:22So, they're building these things inside these giant
- 19:25stainless steel Rockets. So they know what they're doing
- 19:28it, take it, take a note from them, cover up your skin,
- 19:33because there's literally no shade down there, nothing you
- 19:36can do, and there's no bathrooms and there's no food, so bring
- 19:40some food with you, bring some snacks with you, you know, beef
- 19:42jerky, trail, mix whatever floats your boat, whatever
- 19:46tickles your fancy as they say bring some fruit That's always a
- 19:50good thing. But whatever you take in, take
- 19:53out with you, please, because you don't want to litter one
- 19:58hears this, you're disgusting Pig.
- 20:00If you litter, I'm just gonna be honest with you.
- 20:01Your gross and weird and 2's is going to destroy the environment
- 20:06down there. This is a Boca Chica Wildlife
- 20:08Refuge down there at Boca, Chica Beach in the whole way down
- 20:12there. It's a wildlife refuge.
- 20:13So don't be a jerk whatever you bring in.
- 20:16Bring out with you, don't litter Don't throw stuff on the ground
- 20:20and think no one's ever going to see it because they will, you
- 20:23know, you might kill a bird, you might kill something and just
- 20:27don't be a jerk. So, whatever you bring in, bring
- 20:30out with you bring a lot of water.
- 20:33Also what I would suggest is there's a lot of little gas
- 20:37stations on your way before you get to highway for little
- 20:43markets and stuff. I would suggest buying either
- 20:48you know, You could get a big pack of water, like a 24-pack of
- 20:52water for like 5 bucks, you know, those little bottles, even
- 20:56though those it's not the best thing to do.
- 20:59It's always good to have extra water, not just for yourself,
- 21:02but for other people too. Because if you see somebody down
- 21:05there, everyone is always been really nice that I met down
- 21:09there and sometimes you just have to share, right?
- 21:12So the best thing for me to do, I always had a big case of water
- 21:15in my trunk. Maybe if you're going to go for
- 21:17a couple days, get a 24. I pack or whatever because
- 21:20you're going to be out and about anyway, and it's always better
- 21:23to use reusable, you know, it, reusable containers for the
- 21:28stuff. But sometimes you just can't and
- 21:30it's not really feasible to do that, and it's better for more
- 21:34people than just yourself, if you have containers of water for
- 21:39other people. So just think of yourself first,
- 21:41think of other people as well, and also bring your phone with
- 21:45you. Bring something bring a camera
- 21:47with you. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
- 21:50So bring a camera, bring a phone bring whatever, whatever the
- 21:53best camera that you have. Bring that with you.
- 21:57Make sure to be safe though. You're out in the middle of
- 21:59nowhere. There's really no.
- 22:02It's kind of wild down there so there's really no police
- 22:05presence other than at Starbase. So be careful.
- 22:08Don't leave your stuff around. It's a street smarts.
- 22:11Don't leave your stuff around when you leave your vehicle, put
- 22:15all your stuff in your trunk, you know, secure it as much.
- 22:18Possible, you know, it's it really is a wild place down
- 22:22there. I've met some absolutely amazing
- 22:24people from all over the world but I've also met some really
- 22:27sketchy people. And yeah, you just got to have
- 22:31your street smarts like if they get too close to you you know
- 22:34like just kind of back off and make it known that you don't
- 22:40like them being that close kind of thing.
- 22:41Like I've had to do that a few times, like Yo dude, you gotta
- 22:44back off because when they're coming like right up to you and
- 22:47talking to you and They're like a close talker, you know, it
- 22:50makes me uncomfortable for close talker.
- 22:51So I'll take a step back, but I'll also take care of my
- 22:56equipment. Take care of myself.
- 22:58I have a lot of camera equipment.
- 23:00So for me I have to have a special like a secure area, kind
- 23:04of out of everybody's reach. I cannot park by myself not near
- 23:09everybody because it's not that I don't trust people I just know
- 23:13that what can happen will happen and so there's a lot of And that
- 23:19I'm like I like man I just want to be right up in the action and
- 23:22I'm really excited because I want to see this stuff happened
- 23:24but also there's other times when I'm like ew This is not
- 23:27like this doesn't seem like a like the right time and those
- 23:30are the times where you just want to like you want to be
- 23:33there but you gotta back off, you know, and you gotta just go
- 23:36do your own thing. That being said, I do your own
- 23:40thing, but be courteous of the people that work there, be
- 23:43courteous to the people that work there that live there.
- 23:46These people are there all the time, you know?
- 23:48Oh, they're baking in this heat to build this rocket ship.
- 23:52And they're sacrificing a lot for this.
- 23:55So please, please be courteous of the people that work there
- 23:59and the people that are there already, you know, people are
- 24:01live streaming on YouTube, you know, say hi.
- 24:04But also, let's be good to them. Be good to other people.
- 24:09Be nice to people. So the so the, the kind of the,
- 24:13the takeaway from all of this here, and I'm going to wrap it
- 24:15up in a minute here. Is that Just be a decent human
- 24:19being. That's about it.
- 24:21Go to Boca Chica Beach. Hang out.
- 24:23Go to spacex's launch facility. Go see the orbital pad.
- 24:27Go see the construction going down down there.
- 24:30Go. See Starbase SpaceX, has launch
- 24:34control center. The Starbase sign.
- 24:36You know, like how cool is that to go to the Starbase sign?
- 24:40Super cool. Super, super cool.
- 24:43So go see that stuff would be neat.
- 24:47To see it. And also, you know, take care of
- 24:51yourself and each other and make sure that you stay out of the
- 24:55way and just be a Good Samaritan and be a good person.
- 25:01So at the end of the day, I know this was supposed to be a sort
- 25:06of not a survival of Starbase but more.
- 25:12So a general guide to go see the launch So they'll probably do a
- 25:17daytime launch so you want to be there, want to wake up early
- 25:21that day and get ready and just be ready to go to your spot.
- 25:25You know, and I do believe that South Padre Island is the place
- 25:28to be for these launches for everybody.
- 25:29There are a couple other spots but I don't think there is good.
- 25:32So I want to give you the best spot for yourself and, you know,
- 25:37somebody who's a who was a local for almost a year.
- 25:41I think those are the couple couple good really good, really
- 25:44good spots for you to hang out. Out South Padre Island at the
- 25:48Cameron County Amphitheatre and near the Jesus Christ of the
- 25:52fisherman statue. So thanks everybody for hanging
- 25:56out today. I really do appreciate it.
- 25:58And if you like this, make sure to subscribe and any podcast
