- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome to Brief pre size. I'm Michael Foote, I'm Melissa Albro.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Today we're going to be talking about Melissa's quest to
- 0:10Speaker 1: buy a new car, gasoline panties. We have a special
- 0:13Speaker 1: guest and a snap and she's going to talk about
- 0:16Speaker 1: the bank she has that I don't have. We're going
- 0:18Speaker 1: to talk about body image issues, discrimination lawsuits, and all
- 0:21Speaker 1: your questions from the DM So stick around. Oh wait,
- 0:26Speaker 1: invite a new little party. You knew that I wasn't
- 0:28Speaker 1: going to go, but that and that is what you wanted.
- 0:30Speaker 1: That's what I wanted.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I know, but but I mean you knew that I
- 0:34Speaker 2: wasn't going to come. What did I do this weekend?
- 0:36Speaker 1: I have to complain about Okay, Yeah, get on the
- 0:38Speaker 1: record please.
- 0:39Speaker 2: And I'm going to complain about this, these two things,
- 0:43Speaker 2: knowing knowing that I am in a place of privilege, right,
- 0:49Speaker 2: I'm super lucky, very blessed.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yes, Sarah, I know that's nice. Give me the fucking complaint.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I bought a new car. I bought a new car.
- 0:57Speaker 1: This is like a really privileged Okay, I said. I
- 1:01Speaker 1: thought it was going to be like no, no, no,
- 1:03Speaker 1: I sent back my entree. No no, no, It's like
- 1:06Speaker 1: I invested in a huge automobile. I mean it with
- 1:09Speaker 1: hundreds of thousands, and it's a g wagon.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It is No, it's not.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It's the rim spin that just keep spend.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Spend that kind of money on it.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Oh I would I love a little large ass, a
- 1:20Speaker 1: little disposed of income. Yeah, no, no, anyway, I'm disgusting.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I'm an American, I'm from Long Island.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I'm sorry to hear that. I don't know what to
- 1:29Speaker 2: say to you.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I don't have like a fun cultural background like you.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I'm just a white boy.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I need to understand, and I really want somebody who
- 1:36Speaker 2: is in the know to get back to me on this.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I need to understand why it takes so fucking long
- 1:40Speaker 2: to buy a car. I got to the dealership. Oh
- 1:43Speaker 2: my god, o'clock in the morning.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Can we just order it on seamless? This is actually
- 1:47Speaker 1: any and I'm sorry anyone who's broke listening to this,
- 1:50Speaker 1: but it is actually a nightmare.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I mean, I think it doesn't even matter how much
- 1:53Speaker 2: money you're right, if you're into buyer car, you're buying
- 1:56Speaker 2: a car.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Why can't we just call forward and be like, Hi,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I want a car? No, you have to go to
- 2:00Speaker 1: some guy on at four different guy it is actually wild,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and all of them gave you a different price in
- 2:07Speaker 1: an answer and everything.
- 2:08Speaker 2: No, no, no, that's not what it was. But it
- 2:10Speaker 2: was like everybody at every different level, right I got
- 2:13Speaker 2: so first I had my salesperson, okay, fine, Then I
- 2:16Speaker 2: met like every fucking level of manager. It took all day,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and I gotta tell you, I mean I.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Would have charged them for a meet and greet, not to.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Like toot my own horn, but like I got a
- 2:26Speaker 2: good credit score and I had the money, right, so like, what's.
- 2:29Speaker 1: The what's the old boys?
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah, no, eight o'clock in the morning. I think I
- 2:34Speaker 2: started really looking at like nine because I was there
- 2:37Speaker 2: to get my regular car serviced. I did not walk
- 2:40Speaker 2: out of that lot with the car until three o'clock
- 2:42Speaker 2: in the afternoon, Michael, and I was I'm.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Sorry, life is sure? That is? That is so I
- 2:49Speaker 1: would have liked I couldn't.
- 2:51Speaker 2: At the end of it, I was like shaking.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Oh my god, no, so mad, No, I would that's crazy,
- 2:56Speaker 1: egregious and like you're buying a car. You wanted to
- 2:58Speaker 1: be like a fun joyous I was not.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I'm pissed. Off at the car again.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah, And then I was reading a thing because I
- 3:03Speaker 1: was trying to buy a car and Carbana or like
- 3:05Speaker 1: one of those is.
- 3:06Speaker 2: That easy apps?
- 3:07Speaker 1: I thought it would be, but it wasn't and I
- 3:09Speaker 1: ended up not doing it. And then I read a
- 3:11Speaker 1: report that those prices were wrong and that they're maybe
- 3:14Speaker 1: being sued. I don't know, fact check me. Someone comment
- 3:17Speaker 1: below if you bought something from one of those, but
- 3:20Speaker 1: I really liked car website.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Somebody, either you own a car dealership or you're a
- 3:24Speaker 2: car salesperson, put me on so that I can avoid
- 3:27Speaker 2: this movie.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, Or if you're a car company and wants
- 3:30Speaker 1: to the show, please let us know, because this is
- 3:32Speaker 1: it's agregious.
- 3:33Speaker 2: The other thing, now, this is I was really thinking
- 3:36Speaker 2: about this because I'm thinking about people who were going
- 3:40Speaker 2: into a new month without benefits and the cost of
- 3:45Speaker 2: of how much it costs to eat healthy? Right, So,
- 3:48Speaker 2: again understanding that I'm coming at this from a place
- 3:51Speaker 2: of privilege. I was going through a farmer's market and
- 3:53Speaker 2: I decided that I was going to buy an apple.
- 3:56Speaker 2: One apple. How much did that apple cost me?
- 3:58Speaker 1: Michael A couple bucks?
- 4:01Speaker 2: I bet four dollars.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Oh my God, that's crazy. And I bought it, and
- 4:06Speaker 1: I spend money on the stupidest shit. I'm like, oh,
- 4:09Speaker 1: a fifty dollars delivery, Yeah, that's fine. I'm like, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: I really mow through money. I set it on fire.
- 4:16Speaker 1: What are you buying? That's the problem is I don't
- 4:19Speaker 1: know what I'm buying. Yeah, I'm just like top top
- 4:23Speaker 1: every everywhere I go, I'm tapping.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what. I think. This used to happen
- 4:27Speaker 2: to me a lot. But you sort of go out
- 4:30Speaker 2: and you spend you know, you've spent money, but all
- 4:33Speaker 2: you have to show for it is like a pack of.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Gum and it's regret. Yeah, no, yt yeah. They say,
- 4:39Speaker 1: like wake up in New York. It costs like one
- 4:41Speaker 1: hundred dollars just to wake up, and it's death by
- 4:43Speaker 1: a thousand paper cuts because it's like, oh, thirty dollars here,
- 4:47Speaker 1: thirty dollars there, twenty nine ninety nine for this. Everything
- 4:50Speaker 1: is thirty to forty dollars now, and before you buying
- 4:53Speaker 1: four of them a day, yeah, and then another thing
- 4:56Speaker 1: and then like, oh I need a special treat. I
- 4:58Speaker 1: always have to get a special treat. Melissa saw me
- 4:59Speaker 1: drinking a coke. When I came in here, she was like,
- 5:02Speaker 1: what are you doing? And I was like, once a month,
- 5:05Speaker 1: the little demon that lives inside me says, you have
- 5:08Speaker 1: to drink a coke in order to feel better. And
- 5:10Speaker 1: it's great. I love it. If you're getting a migraine, Oh, coke, coke,
- 5:14Speaker 1: a Coca cola.
- 5:15Speaker 2: And either saltines.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Pretzels, pretzels, pretzels. That is the only thing. No migraine
- 5:23Speaker 1: medication works. I just do that and it's great.
- 5:26Speaker 2: A coke and some pretzels.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, Well, let's go into a sidebar because something
- 5:31Speaker 1: crazy happened to me. This is sidebar.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I don't have rona, do you No.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm fine, don't give me that rona.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I oh man, I'll be so much I will probably
- 5:44Speaker 2: stop talking to you.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I've had COVID so many times. I'm like a superbug.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Okay, I don't want it.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't have it.
- 5:51Speaker 3: All right.
- 5:52Speaker 2: If I get it, it's because he gave it to me.
- 5:54Speaker 1: If I had a dollar for every time a man
- 5:56Speaker 1: said that to me, I would actually I would be
- 5:59Speaker 1: able to pay my fucking AMEX bill.
- 6:01Speaker 2: You still haven't told me what you bought I.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Mean a lot of it is like flights. I'm like, okay,
- 6:05Speaker 1: So I am at that point in my life where
- 6:07Speaker 1: I have set standards and pract best practices for myself.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I don't sit in anything but business class anymore. And
- 6:14Speaker 1: that is like and I've worked hard to get here.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Utens.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Also, we've talked about dry cleaning bills that one hundred
- 6:21Speaker 1: dollars a week easily for just wearing the shirt to
- 6:24Speaker 1: the show. Today, this is going to be eight dollars
- 6:26Speaker 1: to dry clean. Just to clean it, I had to
- 6:27Speaker 1: pay for the shirt, sure, and now every time I
- 6:30Speaker 1: wear it, I pay too. Oh wait, last episode, we
- 6:33Speaker 1: promised the world that we would talk about your dad
- 6:36Speaker 1: on a jury, and because we ran out of time,
- 6:38Speaker 1: we didn't get to it. You have to tell the
- 6:39Speaker 1: story of your father. Sorry, non sequitur, just diving in
- 6:43Speaker 1: here to Joel.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Here's the thing about people being on juries that I
- 6:48Speaker 2: think we have to sort of be aware of, Like,
- 6:50Speaker 2: sometimes you will get a man like my father, who
- 6:54Speaker 2: we missed very much. But I remember my dad was
- 6:57Speaker 2: on a jury and I said to him was it going?
- 7:00Speaker 2: And he was just like he did it?
- 7:02Speaker 1: And I was like, who He's.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Like, No, Missa. He did. And I was like, how
- 7:09Speaker 2: do you know that he did it? And he said,
- 7:12Speaker 2: it was two o'clock in the morning. What was he
- 7:15Speaker 2: doing out? If he good? And I remember me and
- 7:21Speaker 2: my brother looking at each other and I said, pop
- 7:25Speaker 2: in the morning, he does not mean And he was like,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and he said to me, has anything good ever happened
- 7:31Speaker 2: at two o'clock in the morning. And I gotta tell you,
- 7:34Speaker 2: he kind of got you with That got me so
- 7:38Speaker 2: beware of people like my dad on a tree, who's
- 7:42Speaker 2: like it was two oclock in the morning, or they
- 7:44Speaker 2: were wearing those pants or whatever it was.
- 7:47Speaker 1: That's actually criminal defense lawyer's greatest nightmare is that Joel
- 7:51Speaker 1: is on the jury. I've spent a year building a
- 7:54Speaker 1: fucking defense for this person and we've got Joel on
- 7:57Speaker 1: the jury who's got glasses on like this.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Can we drop a picture of my dad?
- 8:05Speaker 1: I don't, yeah, drop in a photo drone not doing
- 8:07Speaker 1: a good impression. Uh, he was out at two in
- 8:10Speaker 1: the morning. It's clearly guilty. Guilty as hell, Oh my god,
- 8:14Speaker 1: and my capital punishment for me.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Then my dad meant that shit did convict.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I don't remember what happened.
- 8:20Speaker 2: It's a long time ago. It was a long time ago,
- 8:23Speaker 2: but I remember, and I remember trying to say to
- 8:25Speaker 2: my father, that's not a good enough reason.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah it is.
- 8:29Speaker 1: It sounds like he did. I think, well, you know
- 8:31Speaker 1: what happened. It sounds like he was not swayed by
- 8:34Speaker 1: the other.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And my mom was like co signing. She was like, sure,
- 8:36Speaker 2: but this is a lady who was yelling on her
- 8:38Speaker 2: windows for that woman to hit her kid.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Well, this is the other thing is I'm like, Brad,
- 8:41Speaker 1: you're married to a defense attorney. He was on a
- 8:43Speaker 1: jury once and he was the foreman.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But I feel like Brad was listening, really carefully.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Doing his and he ended up convicting. I was like,
- 8:51Speaker 1: I can't believe you're convicted.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Did the guy deserve it?
- 8:54Speaker 1: Wow? Microaggression? Guy. Women can be guilty too, Yes they can,
- 8:58Speaker 1: but yeah it was a guy. It's mostly men who
- 9:02Speaker 1: are guilty.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'm going to say it's not all.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Not all men, but most of them, and no women
- 9:07Speaker 1: and no women. All right, Well, I'm excited we have
- 9:11Speaker 1: Anna Snaps in the studio today.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Wait to meet hers.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I'm so excited.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I can't wait to meet her.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So she's going to be joining us for under Oath,
- 9:20Speaker 1: where we're going to be talking about some interesting like
- 9:22Speaker 1: fat discrimination lawsuits and the law behind it. It gets
- 9:25Speaker 1: kind of weird and I feel like we'll probably get
- 9:27Speaker 1: derailed big time. But the best intentions conversation. What is
- 9:31Speaker 1: that the road to hell is paved with good intentions
- 9:33Speaker 1: and we're going straight in, so we'll be right back.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Gasoline panies.
- 9:38Speaker 1: You're listening to brief Recess. Did you say gasoline panties?
- 9:42Speaker 1: Is that a saying? I say that that's a great
- 9:44Speaker 1: fashion line that is no monetize that this segment is
- 9:52Speaker 1: called under Oath. I'm here with my good friend, demonic, evil,
- 9:57Speaker 1: man hating wench Anna Snap. I love her so much.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Please a longime briefs that she looks scandalized.
- 10:10Speaker 3: My ancestors, thank you very much.
- 10:13Speaker 1: They speak of her.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I've never heard that sentience when.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Speak. She's iconic. I know her from all over the internet,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and I welcome. We wanted to talk about all sorts
- 10:27Speaker 1: of I mean.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Excited to have you.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Yeah, don't you.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Apparently I'm a man hating wench.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And you're in good company.
- 10:37Speaker 2: You're seriously, you are not alone, everyone, you are not alone.
- 10:41Speaker 2: I am here with you.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Hi, I'm Anna. We're meeting for the first time in person.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Oh my god, iconic for so long.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I'm so excited to meet you in person.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I know it's so I'm.
- 10:56Speaker 2: We've been we've been talking without you.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Wait, well, is.
- 11:00Speaker 4: A whole shit list, I dm her, I said, I
- 11:01Speaker 4: think I am so much.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I'm so mad those of you who just listening you
- 11:04Speaker 1: didn't see Anna is doing this thing with her hair,
- 11:07Speaker 1: with her bangs, that is. I am so mad. I
- 11:10Speaker 1: can't do it.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Thank you so much. Clocking doesn't mean you can't just.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Delusional bitch imaginary hair. Yes, well, thank you for joining us, Adam.
- 11:24Speaker 1: We really wanted to talk about I mean, you are
- 11:27Speaker 1: so vocal online about all sorts of issues that fat
- 11:30Speaker 1: people face, that plus size actors face. You and I
- 11:32Speaker 1: have talked about this extensively as well together, so I
- 11:35Speaker 1: thought it'd be great to have you on because we
- 11:37Speaker 1: cover all sorts of different lawsuits here on the show,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and there have been a lot of really interesting discrimination
- 11:42Speaker 1: cases around like fat people, plus size people, whatever the
- 11:46Speaker 1: verticular is that you use and prefer. But also Melissa
- 11:49Speaker 1: and I have like some really interesting personal experiences in
- 11:52Speaker 1: this space. I don't know. If you want to speak
- 11:53Speaker 1: to that, I can speak to mine, which I was
- 11:55Speaker 1: a really fat kid and I've been on a diet
- 11:57Speaker 1: since I was like in the nineties.
- 11:59Speaker 3: So died on the in the nineties. It's shocking.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I never heard of that man.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And I also was a fat kid, a fa adolescent,
- 12:13Speaker 2: a fat young woman also had been on a diet.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I remember being in the first grade going to my pediatrician.
- 12:20Speaker 2: That's a schwartz who's no longer with us, and it
- 12:22Speaker 2: was it was the worst. It was the worst kind
- 12:24Speaker 2: of thing to give to a kid, right, So it
- 12:26Speaker 2: was like a hamburger, patty, no bunt, a scoop of
- 12:29Speaker 2: cottage cheese that's actually is not the.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Cottage. Oh my god. So you're an actor. I am, okay,
- 12:41Speaker 1: not a paid crisis actor, but you have you've been
- 12:43Speaker 1: doing a one woman show.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I think I have two one woman shows.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Actually the woman heard that's what we've been doing about.
- 12:52Speaker 3: No two one woman shows.
- 12:53Speaker 4: One is autobiographical and I've been performing it for like
- 12:56Speaker 4: a decade international and it's about my experience with chronic illness,
- 13:01Speaker 4: a passive an eating disorder PTSD, mental illness, just a
- 13:06Speaker 4: little concoction.
- 13:07Speaker 1: So really light hearted. Yea, it is.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Partially comedy, is mostly drama. But what's funny is that
- 13:15Speaker 4: I randomly got picked up by the medical community, so
- 13:17Speaker 4: I'll perform for like doctors and students and stuff.
- 13:20Speaker 1: So that's been awesome.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, it's been cool.
- 13:25Speaker 4: I perform it, like performed off Broadway, I performed at
- 13:27Speaker 4: Edinburgh Fringe.
- 13:28Speaker 3: I performed.
- 13:31Speaker 2: For the medical community, Like what what are you doing?
- 13:34Speaker 4: So I do the show and then there's often like
- 13:36Speaker 4: a talk back or like a panel discussion to like
- 13:38Speaker 4: let especially like med students ask questions because obviously they're
- 13:41Speaker 4: taught the science, but they're not always taught like the
- 13:43Speaker 4: empathy in the bedside manner and kind of the human
- 13:45Speaker 4: side of medicine definitely ties into this.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Sort of like discrimination and.
- 13:49Speaker 4: The fatness and being a bigger body, especially as it
- 13:52Speaker 4: relates to like eating disorders or just being in a
- 13:54Speaker 4: bigger body, and how it relates to even like chronic
- 13:56Speaker 4: illness and stuff. And then my other one woman show,
- 13:59Speaker 4: I all created over Lockdown. I interviewed like over four
- 14:02Speaker 4: hundred people about their experience battling and eating disorder, and
- 14:05Speaker 4: then I created something called a verbatim theater piece where
- 14:07Speaker 4: you basically recreate their voice on stage, so like if
- 14:09Speaker 4: they have an accent, if they pause, if they say,
- 14:12Speaker 4: if they haven't whatever. It is cut down there interview
- 14:16Speaker 4: into like a monologue. So I performed ten different characters,
- 14:18Speaker 4: including my own stories.
- 14:19Speaker 3: So that's so weird.
- 14:21Speaker 4: I just had my autobiographical show in Philly like a
- 14:27Speaker 4: few weeks ago.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I'm trying to do it again next year. I'm trying
- 14:30Speaker 3: to bring it back to New York.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So okay, So if you're launching this, and if you're
- 14:34Speaker 1: a producer, police, reach Ore Sas at exactly right Media
- 14:37Speaker 1: dot com and we'll put you in touch with Anna Snaps.
- 14:41Speaker 1: We do dream making here exactly Right we.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Are.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I thought it would be cool to kind of talk
- 14:52Speaker 1: about this, Like, there's this discrimination lawsuit that's currently like
- 14:55Speaker 1: making its way through the New York system. It's called
- 14:57Speaker 1: Harris by New York, and it was a civil servant
- 15:00Speaker 1: applicant who was trying to become a civil servant to
- 15:03Speaker 1: become a probation officer. So I do with probation officers
- 15:07Speaker 1: like all the time as a criminal defense lawyer, and
- 15:09Speaker 1: they basically denied her because of her size. So it's
- 15:12Speaker 1: really interesting. Fat is not like a protected class under
- 15:15Speaker 1: any US federal law, so you technically can't sue under
- 15:19Speaker 1: federal law for like fat discrimination. So there are some
- 15:23Speaker 1: like interesting workarounds that I found that, like, people sometimes
- 15:26Speaker 1: will sue under the American Disabilities Act the ADA, which
- 15:29Speaker 1: is like very established federal law that people sue under,
- 15:34Speaker 1: but most courts have held that, like obesity isn't a
- 15:37Speaker 1: disability that and that is the argument that plaintiffs make
- 15:41Speaker 1: right when they've been discriminated against because of their size,
- 15:44Speaker 1: they then argue that under the ADA, they're being discriminated
- 15:47Speaker 1: against because of their weight. One of the interesting things
- 15:50Speaker 1: that people have been able to do is like if
- 15:52Speaker 1: it is connected to like a medical issue. So if
- 15:54Speaker 1: you say, like this medical issue equals my body being
- 15:58Speaker 1: a different size, then I'm able you're able to sort
- 16:00Speaker 1: of find relief under the ADA.
- 16:02Speaker 2: You know what that sounds like. I mean, I know
- 16:04Speaker 2: it's not exactly the same thing, but it's I've had
- 16:08Speaker 2: two aunts who had been flight attendants, and you used
- 16:12Speaker 2: to have to do weight check in order to be
- 16:15Speaker 2: a flight attendant, and it was like five to two
- 16:18Speaker 2: to five nine and no more than one hundred and
- 16:22Speaker 2: thirty five pounds, and it has nothing to do with
- 16:24Speaker 2: being able to do the job. It was all about
- 16:27Speaker 2: the aesthetics. So you needed to be no glasses, unblemished, unmarried,
- 16:31Speaker 2: no kids, white.
- 16:33Speaker 1: That is actually the criteria when we were casting this show.
- 16:36Speaker 2: So and look at what happened.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And joked it's okay, I'll go fuck myself. Yeah anyway,
- 16:44Speaker 1: could continue flight attendant.
- 16:45Speaker 2: But yeah, it just had to do with aesthetics, right,
- 16:48Speaker 2: So nothing to actually having.
- 16:50Speaker 1: To do do that on Emirates. One.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I don't know about Emirates, but the last time that
- 16:55Speaker 2: they were actually doing that still in the United States
- 16:57Speaker 2: was nineteen ninety five, which is really just about crazy.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Which is when I was on Weight Watchers. Yeah, like
- 17:03Speaker 1: it was like around that time. Yeah, wow, that's extraordinary,
- 17:07Speaker 1: Like we're.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Todd that that's the aesthetic, you know what I mean,
- 17:10Speaker 4: it's not even like that. That's like like hundreds of
- 17:13Speaker 4: years ago, if you were fat, you were worshiped because
- 17:15Speaker 4: it meant you had money.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Do I have money? No, but.
- 17:25Speaker 1: It should be she's self around the world. Michael and Melissa,
- 17:33Speaker 1: what's it like being.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Poor porn worshiped?
- 17:44Speaker 1: So basically, I mean we really don't need to cover
- 17:47Speaker 1: the case. It's like you want to just keep talking.
- 17:49Speaker 1: But you were, you were talking a little bit about
- 17:50Speaker 1: the airlines.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It was, and just again it's it was all about
- 17:55Speaker 2: the aesthetic. Had absolutely nothing to do with how well
- 17:58Speaker 2: you could do the job or whether or not you
- 18:00Speaker 2: could do the job. But for them to be a
- 18:03Speaker 2: flight attendant, a stewardess as they were called back in
- 18:05Speaker 2: the day, is that you needed to be approachable but
- 18:10Speaker 2: also glamorized, right, So like, okay, so that's why you
- 18:15Speaker 2: had to be a certain weight and if you and
- 18:17Speaker 2: if you gained weight, you were fired.
- 18:20Speaker 1: What it was and this was the airline your aunt
- 18:22Speaker 1: worked for, yees.
- 18:23Speaker 2: So I had an aunt who worked for pan Am
- 18:26Speaker 2: and we still think that the reason why she got
- 18:28Speaker 2: that job, because it was back in the sixties was
- 18:30Speaker 2: she was very fair skin and white presenting.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:35Speaker 2: She used to be on weight check all the time.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I mean speaking of like discrimination and the work and
- 18:39Speaker 1: like casting people for like jobs Abercrombie and Fitch, do
- 18:43Speaker 1: you remember.
- 18:43Speaker 3: That, Yeah, well no, it's burned in my memory.
- 18:45Speaker 1: They were constantly and they got I think they got
- 18:48Speaker 1: suited and they were like, yeah, we did it. Like
- 18:50Speaker 1: they didn't even yes, yeah, oh yeah, it was like
- 18:58Speaker 1: only white people too, Like the black people were given stock.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Yes, did you see that documentary about where they had
- 19:04Speaker 2: like the fat black people in the back? They had
- 19:08Speaker 2: no idea what was going on.
- 19:10Speaker 4: I've been in social situations where people have put me
- 19:12Speaker 4: in the back of the picture because they don't want
- 19:14Speaker 4: I ruined the aesthetic this was I was younger, like,
- 19:16Speaker 4: this is not not people I surround myself with now.
- 19:18Speaker 4: But like people will be like, oh, you're the tallest.
- 19:21Speaker 4: I'm like, there's a bitch of six two.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I'm not the tallest.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm the gods.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Like what I mean?
- 19:28Speaker 4: And people will put you like that is an aesthetic thing,
- 19:32Speaker 4: and you you'll see it where you see like groups
- 19:34Speaker 4: of people who don't have a single friend that's like
- 19:37Speaker 4: above a size six or something, and you're like, they're
- 19:40Speaker 4: that's like a that's that's like if you don't have
- 19:43Speaker 4: any friends that are in a bigger body or queer
- 19:45Speaker 4: or like a person of color.
- 19:46Speaker 3: I'm like, what's going on here? What's what's going on here?
- 19:48Speaker 1: What's going on in the home?
- 19:50Speaker 2: You know what's really interesting about that? Like people sort
- 19:53Speaker 2: of asking you to sort of sit in the back
- 19:55Speaker 2: because you don't fit the aesthetic, I can tell you.
- 19:57Speaker 2: And I think this is and I I was saying
- 20:00Speaker 2: this the other day when we were talking to Karen
- 20:02Speaker 2: and Georgia. Right, it's like, yeah, I wish so badly
- 20:06Speaker 2: that when I was growing up there was this body
- 20:09Speaker 2: positivity movement that I feel like, I wish so badly
- 20:13Speaker 2: that I had been able to take advantage of, because
- 20:15Speaker 2: I grew up in this place of self loathing, right,
- 20:18Speaker 2: like a lot of people who and people who loved
- 20:22Speaker 2: me right who did who would say things to me
- 20:24Speaker 2: like such a pretty face, if only right? And so
- 20:28Speaker 2: I think what ended up happening to me was not
- 20:31Speaker 2: so much that people were putting me in the back.
- 20:34Speaker 2: I was putting myself in the back, because I have
- 20:36Speaker 2: pictures of myself and it's something that I only really
- 20:40Speaker 2: saw after I lost weight, was how I was sort
- 20:43Speaker 2: of like hunching over and like sort of wearing like
- 20:47Speaker 2: extra baggy clothes, trying really hard to not be seen
- 20:51Speaker 2: at all totally and putting myself in the back more
- 20:54Speaker 2: than people actually doing this.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It was like a self selecting Yeah.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Really really, but it's so I would hope that there's
- 21:00Speaker 2: somebody who's like studying that because I was fucked up
- 21:04Speaker 2: for a really long time.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like the way we treat ourselves as almost.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Like where Oh, it's so evident. I mean when I like,
- 21:10Speaker 4: my body has changed a lot over the years due
- 21:12Speaker 4: to just like health conditions, and when I was actually
- 21:16Speaker 4: thinner and I thought fat was a bad word and
- 21:18Speaker 4: I hated my body. Now that I'm not afraid to
- 21:21Speaker 4: like be seen, it translates so differently. It's like now
- 21:25Speaker 4: that I'm just like whatever, Like I love myself. I
- 21:28Speaker 4: think I'm hot, and I don't think fat is a
- 21:30Speaker 4: bad word, which obviously there's a lot of like fat
- 21:33Speaker 4: is ugly, fat is lazy, fat.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Is inert sort of negative term here.
- 21:37Speaker 4: But like I didn't I was like closed off with
- 21:40Speaker 4: my body language and stuff when I was slightly thinner,
- 21:42Speaker 4: like I didn't want to be seen or take up space.
- 21:44Speaker 4: And now that I'm bigger and I actually want to
- 21:46Speaker 4: take up space, I get the most attention from like
- 21:48Speaker 4: men that I ever have, and I don't like you're.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Non self conscious, Yeah, and like you especially like energetically
- 21:54Speaker 1: when you're open to the world like that, the world
- 21:56Speaker 1: really does meet you where you are, yes of the time,
- 21:59Speaker 1: so like if you are not, if you're closing yourself up,
- 22:01Speaker 1: you're self selecting or putting yourself in the back. Right,
- 22:04Speaker 1: Like the subversive messaging I was receiving when I was
- 22:07Speaker 1: fat was like the less of you, the better, Like
- 22:11Speaker 1: we are only happy when there's less of you. Like,
- 22:14Speaker 1: and that is like for a twelve year old like
- 22:16Speaker 1: gay kid to like receive that message from authority, Like
- 22:19Speaker 1: you listen to authority when you're a kid, like when
- 22:21Speaker 1: you're coming up and like you're you're trying to just
- 22:24Speaker 1: like follow the rules, so like kind of getting that
- 22:26Speaker 1: notion that like you should be the toned down version
- 22:29Speaker 1: of yourself.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And also when it's again when it's somebody who is
- 22:34Speaker 2: supposed to love you, right a parent, you know, a
- 22:37Speaker 2: good friend, a relative, and they're telling you be less
- 22:41Speaker 2: of you. Yes, if we would love you more, that's
- 22:44Speaker 2: the message you're hearing, right, we would love you more
- 22:46Speaker 2: if there was less of you, if you were not
- 22:49Speaker 2: as big, if you were quieter, more reserved, if you
- 22:52Speaker 2: sort of like staying in your place, like all these
- 22:55Speaker 2: things that we get.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And it's like, especially back then, like in the nineties,
- 22:58Speaker 1: it's like fat was equal to really bad health, awful
- 23:02Speaker 1: things are going to happen to you. So like parents
- 23:05Speaker 1: at the time were like, oh, we're just trying to
- 23:06Speaker 1: like keep our kids safe, Like they're just trying to
- 23:08Speaker 1: like it.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Started as good intentions, but like with everything that's come out,
- 23:11Speaker 4: it's kind of like, well, you have to like a
- 23:14Speaker 4: lot more. And also like I was always told I
- 23:16Speaker 4: was too much like personality wise too, but also like
- 23:20Speaker 4: I think obviously the world wants women to be smaller,
- 23:23Speaker 4: so and this sort of like you know skinny Apocalypse
- 23:27Speaker 4: ozentthic era where it's like less of women both like
- 23:30Speaker 4: metaphorically and physically is better better like in quotation. But yeah,
- 23:35Speaker 4: it's like, I mean I have people in my life
- 23:37Speaker 4: who I love dearly and they make comments that I
- 23:41Speaker 4: clock or they like reels on Instagram that I see,
- 23:43Speaker 4: where like it's not you saying fat people are awful,
- 23:46Speaker 4: but it's it's like the microaggression of like, oh that's
- 23:49Speaker 4: a joke, that that's your internalized suff and I'm someone
- 23:52Speaker 4: too where I'm like I never want a friend to
- 23:54Speaker 4: feel like they can't talk to me about body image
- 23:56Speaker 4: stuff because we're all victims to it.
- 23:57Speaker 3: It's like we're all in.
- 23:58Speaker 1: This system, so it's not like just fat, but it's also.
- 24:00Speaker 4: Like it's internalized stuff, and so that's everyone's journey, and
- 24:03Speaker 4: I'm grateful that I'm on a different level of that
- 24:06Speaker 4: journey where I'm like, I don't hate myself, but it's
- 24:09Speaker 4: like crazy like I'll do like modeling or like boudoir
- 24:12Speaker 4: shoots and the photographers photographers will say to me like
- 24:14Speaker 4: I have like really skinny women come in who like
- 24:17Speaker 4: do not want to show their stomach, and they're like,
- 24:19Speaker 4: you're in.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Here being like, oh my god, it's just like an
- 24:22Speaker 3: energy thing.
- 24:23Speaker 4: But I feel so bad that like so many people
- 24:26Speaker 4: that being told that. They're like and they're like, not,
- 24:29Speaker 4: you don't have.
- 24:30Speaker 1: To be fat to hate your body, right, Like a
- 24:32Speaker 1: lot of skinny people are self conscious. Yeah, it really
- 24:36Speaker 1: is like you're.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Saying, like an it's you know the old you know,
- 24:39Speaker 2: as somebody who's going through perimenopause. I'm getting older, and
- 24:42Speaker 2: like today I was looking at myself. I was going
- 24:45Speaker 2: to do I'm going to record myself and do like
- 24:47Speaker 2: a TikTok, and I was looking at my face and
- 24:50Speaker 2: I was like, who do you know crazy?
- 24:52Speaker 1: By the way, because you're like strikingly.
- 24:55Speaker 2: But do you know what I'm saying? Though it's like
- 24:56Speaker 2: and and so what what have I been listening? What
- 25:01Speaker 2: is the message that I have been getting that like,
- 25:04Speaker 2: there is something wrong with getting older? Oh my god, right,
- 25:07Speaker 2: there's something wrong with getting older. There's something wrong with
- 25:10Speaker 2: having like extra skin, or being flabby, or being fat,
- 25:13Speaker 2: or being too short or being like they are all
- 25:15Speaker 2: these things that we hear. And you have to be
- 25:19Speaker 2: very very careful and super self aware to not give
- 25:24Speaker 2: in to that, right, And it takes a long time
- 25:27Speaker 2: to unlearn those things. And I keep on going back
- 25:30Speaker 2: to it, like I wish so badly that I had
- 25:33Speaker 2: heard that I was okay the way that I was,
- 25:36Speaker 2: and that it you know, if you want to lose weight,
- 25:38Speaker 2: that's fine. If you don't, that's fine. Also, I had
- 25:41Speaker 2: this conversation with a family member who was trying to
- 25:45Speaker 2: get me to get another family member to have weight
- 25:48Speaker 2: loss surgery because I had had it, right, you should
- 25:51Speaker 2: tell them that they should do it, And I was like,
- 25:52Speaker 2: I'm not going to tell them shit, Like they can
- 25:54Speaker 2: do it if they want to, but there's nothing wrong
- 25:56Speaker 2: with this person. They could stay the way that they are.
- 25:59Speaker 2: They are are and beautiful and all the things that
- 26:01Speaker 2: one should But for.
- 26:03Speaker 1: That, I'm like, why do people feel like it's okay
- 26:07Speaker 1: to tell other people how their lives should be lived?
- 26:09Speaker 1: That is? It really boils down to that, Like, but
- 26:13Speaker 1: at the end of the day, it's like, why do
- 26:15Speaker 1: you feel like it's okay to like and I see
- 26:18Speaker 1: this where it's like, oh, well, I'm just trying to
- 26:20Speaker 1: help them be healthy, and it's like, well, I'm just
- 26:22Speaker 1: trying to get you to not sound like a fucking idiot,
- 26:24Speaker 1: like don't put your foot in your mouth like that
- 26:26Speaker 1: where helped?
- 26:28Speaker 2: I really really think that there are people who truly believe.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Yeah, they are saying that they're helping.
- 26:34Speaker 2: They're trying to help, and it is coming from a
- 26:36Speaker 2: place of love, but they don't understand.
- 26:38Speaker 4: There's they don't understand the nuance and there's more. It's
- 26:41Speaker 4: more than just like fat equals bad and unhealthy, right, Yeah.
- 26:44Speaker 4: I have skinny friends who popeyes eight times a week,
- 26:47Speaker 4: and you know, like, and people don't understand that you can,
- 26:49Speaker 4: like I exercise not with the intent of losing weight,
- 26:52Speaker 4: but with the intent of taking care of my body. Yes,
- 26:54Speaker 4: and I like sometimes my weight fluctuates and sometimes it doesn't.
- 26:56Speaker 4: But people that's like, why wouldn't you want to lose weight?
- 26:59Speaker 3: And I'm like, actually, my body, like I don't know.
- 27:01Speaker 1: As I started, I stopped playing myself like I exercise
- 27:05Speaker 1: like and I'm very active, but I just completely stopped
- 27:08Speaker 1: weighing myself because I was like, this is not an
- 27:11Speaker 1: indicator of success or failure or health, like this is.
- 27:14Speaker 4: You are the center.
- 27:15Speaker 3: This is.
- 27:19Speaker 2: You know, weigh yourself anymore at all.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I don't help because it would send me into a
- 27:23Speaker 1: fucking tail spin. I'd be like, oh my god, I'm
- 27:26Speaker 1: doing all this work and I'm gaining weight or I'm
- 27:28Speaker 1: doing none of this, I'm losing like yeah, And it
- 27:30Speaker 1: was just like and I was just like, at no point,
- 27:33Speaker 1: my friend in her bathroom has a scale where when
- 27:35Speaker 1: you step on it, it just gives you a compliment.
- 27:38Speaker 1: It doesn't giveveryone a number. And it's like, I weigh
- 27:41Speaker 1: myself every time I'm at her fucking house because I'm like, I'm.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Giving you when that says you are the episode and
- 27:46Speaker 2: you look.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Great, and it's just like it was It's just like
- 27:48Speaker 1: it's cute and goofy, but it's it's a reminder that like, yeah,
- 27:52Speaker 1: this doesn't fucking matter. This is just Earth's gravity pulling
- 27:57Speaker 1: you down to the Earth. And what that actual like
- 27:59Speaker 1: equates to.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Different weights look different on different people. Like I was
- 28:02Speaker 4: with I was at Plus Brooklyn, which is like a
- 28:04Speaker 4: really awesome New York City's like only like consignment shop
- 28:08Speaker 4: for plus sized people, maybe like Vintage Plus Brooklyn. It's amazing.
- 28:13Speaker 4: I'm there all the time, and they it's a really
- 28:16Speaker 4: safe space for like bigger bodies to find fashion in
- 28:18Speaker 4: a brick and mortar store, which you can't do. You
- 28:20Speaker 4: can't just like walk into them all and find and
- 28:22Speaker 4: outfit as a plus size bro.
- 28:23Speaker 2: You can't.
- 28:24Speaker 4: And I was with someone and we were talking about
- 28:26Speaker 4: like just like our sizes and we have two very
- 28:28Speaker 4: different bodies and wear the same size, and like you can't.
- 28:31Speaker 4: I'm sure we're different weights, but like you just can't
- 28:33Speaker 4: ever tell.
- 28:34Speaker 3: You just can't.
- 28:35Speaker 2: So like, yeah, wait, settles in on somebody in a
- 28:38Speaker 2: lot of different ways. The genetic I mean, there's a
- 28:41Speaker 2: lot that comes into it. I used to do this
- 28:43Speaker 2: really fucked up thing where I would I got on
- 28:46Speaker 2: the scale every day, I would take a picture of it,
- 28:49Speaker 2: and I had a folder in my phone with my
- 28:53Speaker 2: you know, and and I finally was like, that's weird, Melissa,
- 28:56Speaker 2: you should stop doing that. I started to realize it
- 28:58Speaker 2: was really bad for me because, like Michael said, depending
- 29:02Speaker 2: on what the number said, it would send.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Me of what you whether you had a good day
- 29:08Speaker 1: or not. Yeah, it would.
- 29:09Speaker 2: It would determine that my good day or not. And
- 29:11Speaker 2: I was a much I realized that I was a
- 29:14Speaker 2: much happier person when I got rid of it. I
- 29:17Speaker 2: believe in them all and I don't do it anymore.
- 29:19Speaker 1: This case was super interesting. Basically like the Department of
- 29:22Speaker 1: Probation cited medical fitness, but they couldn't show up policy
- 29:25Speaker 1: or standard behind it, which really boils down to like,
- 29:28Speaker 1: we just don't like this. And also like I see
- 29:30Speaker 1: this all the time of lawsuits where it's like a
- 29:32Speaker 1: thing happens, a person gets fired, there was no policy
- 29:35Speaker 1: that they did it, they shouldn't have been doing it,
- 29:38Speaker 1: and then they get sued and they're like, oh, well
- 29:40Speaker 1: we have some policy, but they like they can't back
- 29:43Speaker 1: it up and they know they fucked up.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so we know how it ended for that.
- 29:47Speaker 1: So this is still ongoing article.
- 29:50Speaker 4: It's like it hasn't it been going on for years
- 29:51Speaker 4: two yes, yeah.
- 29:53Speaker 1: And it's also like there's going to be a settlement.
- 29:56Speaker 1: There's got to be a settlement or something like this
- 29:58Speaker 1: is ongoing.
- 29:59Speaker 2: But the time this poor person, they're like their life
- 30:03Speaker 2: is i mean not at a standstill, but there's something
- 30:05Speaker 2: that they were trying to do.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Yeah, where's my fucking job. I was trying to get
- 30:09Speaker 1: a paycheck, Like it wasn't like you're.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And now I'm I don't know, dumping all my money
- 30:13Speaker 2: into this stupid say.
- 30:14Speaker 4: Doubling down is crazy, Like you're at a point where
- 30:18Speaker 4: you can just be like, hey.
- 30:20Speaker 2: That's not cool.
- 30:21Speaker 4: I should be on learning this this stuff and like
- 30:24Speaker 4: I'm really sorry, here's money, Like you could get out
- 30:27Speaker 4: of this so easily.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I was. I was flying this is actually I was
- 30:30Speaker 1: flying this weekend and a fat person sat next to
- 30:33Speaker 1: me and I turned to him and I was like,
- 30:36Speaker 1: I'm six four almost six y five, and I was
- 30:39Speaker 1: like I don't fit on this like he was he
- 30:44Speaker 1: was like sorry, sorry, and I was like I don't
- 30:46Speaker 1: fit on this plane either, man, Like I'm I can't
- 30:48Speaker 1: stand up in the bathroom. This is this plane wasn't
- 30:52Speaker 1: made for people like this wasn't made for us. I'm
- 30:56Speaker 1: wearing like business class. But if neither of us track
- 30:59Speaker 1: is more comfortable, it's the organization, It's the institution, right.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Well.
- 31:04Speaker 4: I was telling someone today at Plus Brooklyn that weird
- 31:08Speaker 4: time about how me and this other girl had both
- 31:11Speaker 4: been stuck at one point in the emergency like aisle
- 31:14Speaker 4: and you're not allowed to be in it if you're
- 31:16Speaker 4: a certain size. So like one time I was on
- 31:17Speaker 4: the plane and they were like, actually, they said in
- 31:20Speaker 4: front of the whole packed plane, they were like, you
- 31:22Speaker 4: have to you're too big to be in this seat.
- 31:24Speaker 3: You need to move.
- 31:24Speaker 4: And so then I had to like go around and
- 31:26Speaker 4: like ask different people to move, and people wouldn't move.
- 31:28Speaker 4: So it was just like this like scene in front
- 31:30Speaker 4: of the plane, and like it was It's one of
- 31:32Speaker 4: those things where like I don't feel ashamed by how
- 31:34Speaker 4: I look. I actually think I'm beautiful, But like when
- 31:37Speaker 4: you're in a position like that where you know what
- 31:38Speaker 4: other people think and you're just sort of like it's
- 31:41Speaker 4: delaying the taking off and stuff, and this happened. This
- 31:43Speaker 4: happens a lot to people.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Because let's suit about that. That is really fucked up.
- 31:49Speaker 2: It's fine. You don't want me to sit in this
- 31:52Speaker 2: seat because you think that I'm too big? Fine, how
- 31:54Speaker 2: dare you make me go around asking people.
- 31:58Speaker 3: To make someone you make something?
- 31:59Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 32:00Speaker 2: Sorry, I can't even talk about like that is no,
- 32:03Speaker 2: that's outrageous though, honestly, like the idea, the audacity to
- 32:07Speaker 2: make you do that job.
- 32:09Speaker 3: I'm like, I could say, people.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Like you think I'm not.
- 32:14Speaker 3: You think to be like, let's throw you in the water.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I will tell you so my dad, my dad. I
- 32:21Speaker 2: used to make travel amazements for my father, and as
- 32:23Speaker 2: my father was getting older, I started to feel like, Dad,
- 32:27Speaker 2: you really shouldn't be in that seat because you can't
- 32:29Speaker 2: help anybody do anything. He's like, I'm not helping. I
- 32:35Speaker 2: don't He's like, I don't care, I'm not helping you
- 32:38Speaker 2: help do anything. He's like, but I want the extra
- 32:41Speaker 2: leg room or whatever it was.
- 32:43Speaker 4: I was like, okay, honestly fair though, if I said
- 32:48Speaker 4: that to the flight attendant, They're like, you need to
- 32:49Speaker 4: move your two fat and I'm like, well I need.
- 32:53Speaker 3: What are you going to cost me to one? Age?
- 32:57Speaker 1: Well, and thank you for joining us. This has been
- 32:59Speaker 1: so glad we got it. Come back and see us.
- 33:01Speaker 2: This was great and my god, yeah, tell us your
- 33:03Speaker 2: socials and let everybody know what you're going to be
- 33:05Speaker 2: taking your show on the road again.
- 33:07Speaker 1: This is your camera, so straight to canter all your
- 33:10Speaker 1: socials flip it.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Okay, I'm anna snap and my my socials are the
- 33:17Speaker 4: Anna snap t A G A N N A S
- 33:20Speaker 4: N A P P.
- 33:21Speaker 3: There are two p's in snaps.
- 33:23Speaker 1: And when we're talking about, you know, opening yourself up
- 33:25Speaker 1: to the world, what sort of messages are you looking
- 33:27Speaker 1: to receive and from whom?
- 33:28Speaker 4: Oh, thank you so much for your work and your words.
- 33:32Speaker 3: I here's what I'm open to. Okay.
- 33:34Speaker 4: I love compliments, I love praise. Yeah, period, that's kidding.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Yes, into my DMS. I'm single.
- 33:43Speaker 1: And love it, love it.
- 33:44Speaker 2: And also both Michael and I are following Anna, so
- 33:48Speaker 2: if you.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Find yeah, yes you can find.
- 33:51Speaker 2: And I have no followers, so you'll be really easy.
- 33:53Speaker 3: But not for love.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us.
- 33:59Speaker 3: In real life. Oh my god, we have to do
- 34:01Speaker 3: it again.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Yeah, this is tales from the DMS, where you guys
- 34:07Speaker 1: send me the weirdest, craziest, nuttiest, freakiest things you find
- 34:11Speaker 1: on the internet and you send them to me. In
- 34:13Speaker 1: the form of a question, and I answer it as
- 34:16Speaker 1: a lawyer.
- 34:16Speaker 2: But remember, friends, like I always tell you, while Michael
- 34:19Speaker 2: is a lawyer, he is not your lawyer.
- 34:22Speaker 1: All right, So this is our first question.
- 34:24Speaker 2: First question.
- 34:26Speaker 5: I had a best friend for about eight years. Maybe
- 34:31Speaker 5: they were a very wealthy family. I was there like
- 34:33Speaker 5: personal assistant whatnot. And I did a lot of tasks
- 34:36Speaker 5: for them and they couldn't They didn't pay me in cash.
- 34:39Speaker 5: They said they were like low on gosh, so they
- 34:41Speaker 5: would pay me with like old designer bags.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Okay, stop stop. First of all. First of all, first
- 34:47Speaker 1: of all, beautiful voice. Next whatever.
- 34:50Speaker 2: But I was already annoyed when I heard that. He
- 34:53Speaker 2: was like, well, you know, I was my best friend,
- 34:56Speaker 2: but I was working for them for no money. What
- 34:59Speaker 2: they were taking A.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Said, yes, yeah, that have some self respect something. I mean,
- 35:04Speaker 1: I mean, way to victim blame Michael.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Right, yeah, we don't Actually we don't understand.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Showing him on the family right.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Yeah again on the family. And it is too bad
- 35:13Speaker 2: that you were I mean, I'm assuming in a situation
- 35:15Speaker 2: where you felt like you had to do this, But
- 35:17Speaker 2: I already don't like this.
- 35:18Speaker 1: It sounds like this, Okay, So the question, really, the
- 35:21Speaker 1: crux of the question really is that, like he was
- 35:23Speaker 1: arrested for selling these bags given to him as payment.
- 35:29Speaker 1: It was no big deal. In college, this friend was
- 35:31Speaker 1: a roommate. They this this man lived in his friend's
- 35:34Speaker 1: house as a roommate and paid rent. Moved to a
- 35:39Speaker 1: new city, accuser of stealing stop by. The police had
- 35:43Speaker 1: a warrant for my arrest for theft considered state jail
- 35:45Speaker 1: felony theft. Okay, so these were like beat up designer bags.
- 35:49Speaker 1: They accused him of stealing the bags from this house.
- 35:51Speaker 1: But it sounds like they couldn't pay him in cash originally,
- 35:54Speaker 1: So this.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Is like like almost like a barter.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but also like if they couldn't pay you originally,
- 35:59Speaker 1: that's the first sign that they're broke. And now they're
- 36:01Speaker 1: trying to operation repo the fucking bags. Like that's messed up.
- 36:06Speaker 1: I'm sorry, excuse me, your luck pay a fucking employee.
- 36:11Speaker 1: You then paid them in goods, and then you were
- 36:14Speaker 1: like give.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Me that back, but not even like good goods, beat
- 36:18Speaker 2: up goods. This is all of this is sitting very
- 36:20Speaker 2: wrong with me. It's leaving a bad taste in the mouth.
- 36:23Speaker 1: So insofar as like the law. The fact that there's
- 36:25Speaker 1: a warrant out for your arrest, I know you haven't
- 36:27Speaker 1: heard in a while, Like that is concerning to me.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Like warrants don't expire, they're just not enforced. So I
- 36:34Speaker 1: would A felony arrest can't be ignored. It's not just
- 36:38Speaker 1: gonna like go away on its own, So I would.
- 36:40Speaker 1: I would contact like the court or a clerk somehow
- 36:44Speaker 1: wherever it was issued and try and find out, like
- 36:46Speaker 1: if it's still an active warrant.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Should this person see a lawyer?
- 36:49Speaker 1: That sounds oh, definitely likes find a lawyer, friends, because
- 36:53Speaker 1: waiting six months to resolve a warrant, like ken, I
- 36:57Speaker 1: did not like.
- 36:57Speaker 3: This for you at all.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I'm actually I hate uestions like this because now what's
- 37:01Speaker 2: gonna what's gonna happen to me is like I'm going
- 37:03Speaker 2: to be thinking about this.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Yes, Well, the other thing is, don't fucking talk to
- 37:06Speaker 1: that roommate. Don't communicate with the accuser because anything you're saying,
- 37:10Speaker 1: they're compiling evidence and you should be compiling evidence too.
- 37:13Speaker 1: So like any comms they sent you, any emails, you
- 37:15Speaker 1: have receipts, like you were given the bags as payment,
- 37:18Speaker 1: and that's technically like a legal transfer, not theft. You're
- 37:21Speaker 1: just gonna have to like prove that somehow. So if
- 37:24Speaker 1: there you'll have to like show services rendered. I know
- 37:27Speaker 1: they didn't give you a receipt for the bags, but
- 37:29Speaker 1: I would want you to sort of dig and show
- 37:31Speaker 1: that like you did do work and there there was
- 37:34Speaker 1: some sort of like exchange for this rather than theft.
- 37:37Speaker 2: I mean, you tell me, Michael, like see if there
- 37:38Speaker 2: are like any emails or text messages referree to like
- 37:42Speaker 2: like living there in like work.
- 37:44Speaker 1: You're gonna do yeah, right, everything done verbally like that
- 37:47Speaker 1: is what I would really dig in. If this were
- 37:49Speaker 1: my client, I would get around that.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Please, if you can go see an attorney. I'm very
- 37:54Speaker 2: worried about you.
- 37:56Speaker 1: I really like that's I mean, that's very sweet of you. Yeah, definitely, yeah.
- 38:00Speaker 2: But I hate I hate bullies. I hate shit like this.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and like the fact that they were they're trying
- 38:07Speaker 1: to take them back and they also do pay you
- 38:09Speaker 1: also just fucking pay the part like that is so weird.
- 38:13Speaker 1: I don't like any something's not adding up, something's wrong anyway.
- 38:16Speaker 1: This has been tales from the DMS. Feel free to
- 38:18Speaker 1: send us your questions anything, any weird legal questions do
- 38:22Speaker 1: you have on your mind? Send them our way. Y'all
- 38:25Speaker 1: asked me about driverless cars, and I was in a
- 38:27Speaker 1: driverless driverless car last week and it was really fun
- 38:30Speaker 1: to like, yeah, I loved it.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Was it weird? I prefer it is it because you
- 38:35Speaker 2: don't want to be spoken to, because I don't.
- 38:37Speaker 1: If I don't want to be perceived by the Internet
- 38:40Speaker 1: as someone who don't make eye contact with me. But
- 38:43Speaker 1: I did love not having to chat and there it
- 38:46Speaker 1: was immaculate. It was so clean. It was so clean,
- 38:50Speaker 1: and it kind of drove like a messy bitch, like
- 38:53Speaker 1: it drove like a taxi driver, like it was not
- 38:56Speaker 1: like super robotic. I was like, oh, you almost killed her. Yeah.
- 39:03Speaker 1: It was really like driving as if it were like
- 39:05Speaker 1: you and I were driving, where it's like pulls up
- 39:07Speaker 1: and like slams on the brakes or like right on red.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Like there was all sorts of stuff where it was like, oh, wow,
- 39:13Speaker 1: this is like a real person. I thought it was
- 39:16Speaker 1: going to be like you know, the fucking airport trolley. Yeah, yeah,
- 39:21Speaker 1: it goes really really slow and it's like a right.
- 39:23Speaker 2: But pretty fuch. I would like something like that is
- 39:27Speaker 2: because I don't love endless chatter when I'm in a car.
- 39:31Speaker 2: I don't mind it saying hi, obviously I love that,
- 39:33Speaker 2: but like the constant chattering while I'm in a cab
- 39:38Speaker 2: or something just kind.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Of I'm like that with a massage too.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Oh, I prefer a silent massage.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'll tell them up up top. Thank you
- 39:45Speaker 1: so much. I'm probably going to fall asleep, yeah, so
- 39:47Speaker 1: feel free to.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Not my massage caret AOD.
- 39:50Speaker 1: And I'll wave if I need you. Yeah. Yeah, anyway,
