- 0:00As the crowds come up to greet him and as he waits for the
- 0:02donkey, the women are part of this crowd, which makes me so
- 0:07happy to read about that. All the people running up the
- 0:10hill included many different ages and genders.
- 0:13Hosanna hosanna. This is extremely counter
- 0:18cultural. These women are breaking the
- 0:20cultural norm. They are not going with the
- 0:23flow. They are not following the
- 0:25prescribed cultural definitions of the Pharah sake lifestyle,
- 0:30where a woman should remain indoors, never speak to a man,
- 0:34and never become educated. And he is calling these women to
- 0:38not only witness, but to testify.
- 0:41And these women have the spirit of prophecy.
- 0:43And the Lord then called the women throughout the rest of the
- 0:46New Testament to be His. Hello and a blessed Easter to
- 0:54you. I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, part of
- 0:57the Scripture Central team that tries to build enduring faith in
- 1:01Jesus Christ. And what a better time of year
- 1:05to talk about that than this holy, Holy Week of our Saviours,
- 1:09last week of life and his resurrection.
- 1:12I am thrilled, too, to be looking at the people in the
- 1:15Easter story who are handmaidens and heroines.
- 1:19I am thrilled to be able to look at Martha of Bethany and Mary of
- 1:24Bethany, Mary of Nazareth in her later years, Jesus's Aunt,
- 1:30Mary's sister Mary of Magdala, Mary of Cleophus, Mary the
- 1:35mother of James and Josie, Mary the other Mary, Salome, mother
- 1:40of James and John and spouse of Zebedee, as well as many other
- 1:45women from Galilee. Now if you counted that up,
- 1:47we've got enough Marys that really you only have to remember
- 1:503 woman's names, Martha, Salome and Auntie.
- 1:55And that's I know she's an unnamed person, but I just love
- 1:58the fact that Jesus Aunt is there as well.
- 2:01As we read in John's gospel. As we talk about these women
- 2:05today, I want to use the title prophetess.
- 2:08In the New Testament, the Spirit of prophecy is defined as
- 2:12someone who's had a witness of the spirit that Jesus is the
- 2:15Christ and they testify of that. They are witnesses of it.
- 2:19And today these women feel that category.
- 2:23Every one of them become women with the Spirit of Prophecy.
- 2:28And in the biblical definition, that is defined as a prophetess.
- 2:32Now in the New Testament, we've got 45 named women, about 135
- 2:37unnamed women, but some of those are categories like the
- 2:40prostitutes or something, giving us a total of 180 named women.
- 2:45So next year we'll go into those.
- 2:46But for right now, I want to remind us that we're told at the
- 2:50beginning of Luke, actually it's Luke chapter 8, verse one
- 2:53through three that Jesus went through every city and village
- 2:56preaching and the 12 were with him and certain women who had
- 3:01been healed of evil spirits and infirmities.
- 3:04Mary called Magdalene, Joanna. And it goes on and describes how
- 3:08she's the wife of Chuza, who's a very wealthy, wealthy man and
- 3:11works directly for Herod and Susanna and many others who
- 3:16provided for him of their substance.
- 3:19Now this is very interesting to me because at this time women
- 3:22were not allowed to own property.
- 3:24So this would suggest that people like Joanna's is in
- 3:28agreement with her husband on donating money to cover the cost
- 3:32of Jesus ministry. And it's not just the 12 that
- 3:35are traveling with Jesus, it's all these women as well that go
- 3:39from city to city. This is extremely
- 3:42countercultural. These women are breaking the
- 3:45cultural norm. They are not going with the
- 3:47flow. They are not following the
- 3:50prescribed cultural definitions of the Pharah sake lifestyle
- 3:55where a woman should remain indoors, never speak to a man,
- 3:59and never become educated. And this is all written up in
- 4:02the Mishna from this time period.
- 4:04Now, of course, there's exceptions to those rules.
- 4:06We have a few examples of some very wealthy women who were
- 4:09educated, who were allowed out of their house.
- 4:11But the majority of the women, whether you're a Jew in
- 4:14Alexandria and Philo is writing about you, or a Jewish woman in
- 4:19Jerusalem, or a Jewish woman up in Galilee, the majority of
- 4:23women were encouraged to remain in the house.
- 4:27And if they ever went outside, they had to be completely
- 4:30veiled, head to toe and never speak.
- 4:33So let's put our hands together and give a shout of hurrah for
- 4:39Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of James and Josie, and
- 4:43Joanna the wife of Chuza, and Mary the wife of Cleophus.
- 4:46You know, these great women, Salome and Martha and Mary of
- 4:51Bethany just are able to make dramatic departures from the
- 4:56culture of their day. And they were brave enough to do
- 4:59it. Now let's open up to the text of
- 5:01the Easter. And just as a reminder, the
- 5:04synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke share a lot of
- 5:08information, and they are all organized geographically.
- 5:12So everything Jesus does up in Galilee is at the beginning of
- 5:16their gospel. And everything that happens in
- 5:19Jerusalem during that last week of his life is down at the end
- 5:23of their gospel. You know, there's only one
- 5:25Passover in their situation. So everything that happened in
- 5:29Jerusalem in Jesus three-year ministry is telescoped down into
- 5:33that one week. But John's gospel is organized
- 5:36chronologically. And so we have three years.
- 5:40We have different passovers. We have Jesus coming down for
- 5:43the feast of the Tabernacles, feast of the dedication.
- 5:45You know, he's he's going from Galilee down to Jerusalem
- 5:48repeatedly, multiple times. And so we don't have the same
- 5:52stories that the synoptics do. And I think John's Gospel is
- 5:55more accurate of what happened that week.
- 5:58Here's a small little outline of According to John's Gospel, the
- 6:02triumphal entry was on a Sunday, and we celebrate that as
- 6:05Christians on our Palm Sunday. But the day before of that would
- 6:09have been his Sabbath. And the day before is when they
- 6:12have the beautiful meeting with at Martha's house where Mary
- 6:15washes his feet, which we'll talk about later.
- 6:17And then in John's Gospel, that Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week
- 6:21is when the Savior is teaching in the temple.
- 6:23The cleansing of the temple is done three years earlier, not
- 6:27now. There's also the preparation for
- 6:31the Passover. There's the last suppering on
- 6:33Wednesday and Gethsemane on Wednesday, and then on Thursday
- 6:37morning. And the very, very early hours
- 6:39of the day is his arrest, his trial, his crucifixion, his
- 6:43burial. And the Passover begins at
- 6:46sunset and then on Friday and Saturday at the Lord is in the
- 6:50tomb and which gives us a portion of three days and three
- 6:55nights in the tomb. And then on this Sunday, Jesus
- 6:58is resurrected. I want to start with wonderful
- 7:00Mary and Martha of Bethany. These wonderful sisters, Martha
- 7:04and Mary, are recorded in three different places.
- 7:07Luke chapter 10 gives us the story where the Savior is
- 7:11teaching Mary, sitting there, learning from him, and we see
- 7:15her there repeatedly in the Gospel of John as well.
- 7:19In John's Gospel we read of them again at the raising of Lazarus
- 7:23and and then again and right before the Saviors last week of
- 7:27his life. And that's the story.
- 7:29When Mary of Bethany buys that very expensive nard and real
- 7:34nard, it means spikenard, sort of like the real Gucci or
- 7:39something. You know, it's a very expensive
- 7:41perfume. It takes almost a year's worth
- 7:43of Labor to pay for that. And we have this beautiful story
- 7:47where the Savior honors her. Didn't mean her for using money
- 7:51in that way. He says she has done this in
- 7:54preparation for my burial. Now Mary of Bethany is not the
- 7:58wicked woman up in Galilee at the Pharisees house who washes
- 8:03Jesus's feet with her tears. That's a different story.
- 8:07Don't get these two women confused, please.
- 8:10Washing a feet was done often by your slaves, your children and
- 8:14women. Women are in the same
- 8:16socioeconomic category as slaves and children.
- 8:18But in John chapter 12, after that sacred dinner, he talks
- 8:23about arising early and those that are traveling with him from
- 8:27Galilee, they've stopped in Bethany on the backside of the
- 8:30Mount of Olives. And now they go up to the top of
- 8:32the Mount of Olives and the crowds begin to gather.
- 8:37And so this would be on a Sunday morning.
- 8:40I love picturing in my mind's eye what the Lord saw at the
- 8:45top, the Crest of the Mount of Olives.
- 8:48Down below him he sees the garden, the orchards of which
- 8:54are known now as Gethsemane. He sees the winter flowing
- 8:57Kidron. Because it's early spring, there
- 9:00still was probably a little runoff.
- 9:02He sees the Maiden Highway, where the crucifixion poles are.
- 9:08The crossbeams are carried by the person who's going to be
- 9:11crucified, but the poles are always in the ground, right
- 9:13beside the Major Rd. He also sees the edge of Mount
- 9:17Moriah on the far South side or his left, which was called in
- 9:22the ancient times Gehenna or Hell because of the burning and
- 9:26the things that were done by certain kings there who
- 9:29sacrificed their children. It's a horrific place, but from
- 9:33that vantage point on the Mount of Olives, he's able to see
- 9:36what's going to happen to him that week, including the
- 9:40beautiful, glistening Golden Temple.
- 9:43That Herod has now got the buildings finished, but they are
- 9:46still adding the gold leaf. And the Herod began that in 20
- 9:49BC and it's not finished until 63AD and then it's destroyed
- 9:54starting in 6869 and 70 completely.
- 9:57So this is a amazing vantage point for the Lord to be
- 10:03standing there as the crowds come up to greet Him and as He
- 10:06waits for the donkey. But the women are part of this
- 10:09crowd, which makes me so happy to read about that.
- 10:13All the people running up the hill included many different
- 10:17ages and genders. Hosanna, Hosanna.
- 10:21And I presume that even though we were not alive then, we could
- 10:24have been part of those heavenly hosts that were joining in that
- 10:28beautiful song and praise of their king entering in on a
- 10:32donkey, not on a War Horse. And of course, this is
- 10:38fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 9 that the Lord will
- 10:42come seated on a donkey. Matthew's the only one that says
- 10:46there's two. And Matthew, I think, is reading
- 10:49Zechariah 9A little differently than it than it says.
- 10:53But for whatever reason, Matthew included two and the others all
- 10:57have one. The four gospels each mentioned
- 11:00the Savior coming to the temple and preaching in the court of
- 11:04the women. This is significant to me
- 11:06because initially when Moses establishes his Tabernacle and
- 11:10then Solomon builds the temple, we have different areas for the
- 11:15priests, for the Levites, for the males who are Israelite, and
- 11:21for the women and children. But by the time of Harrah's
- 11:24Temple, you know he, he cut off the top of Mount Moriah, He's
- 11:27made this huge 35 acre platform where he has expanded the court
- 11:32of the Gentiles. By this time in the New
- 11:35Testament, the court of the women is not just the last place
- 11:39the women can go, but the women are secluded over in one corner.
- 11:43This is all coming from the Mishnah.
- 11:45They are to stay over in the treasury where they can pay
- 11:48their dues and silently leave. They can only enter, as I
- 11:52mentioned before, if they're completely veiled, head to toe,
- 11:55over their face, over their fingers, over their toes.
- 11:58So there were not as many women there, but we do know that there
- 12:02were some there. We know that our wonderful
- 12:05Mother of the Lord went there on a regular basis.
- 12:09It says in Luke, she went every year and worshipped in that
- 12:13courtyard as well. When we get to Wednesday of the
- 12:16Holy Week, the scripture says that the Savior asked for
- 12:21Catalama. It's a rented room and you
- 12:24remember our Lord said I have no way place to lay my head.
- 12:28The Son of Man has no home. He's always on the go.
- 12:33This mission was exhausting for him, I'm sure.
- 12:36And yet he was born in a rented building and now his Last Supper
- 12:42will also be eaten in a catalama or place of lodging.
- 12:47Were the women in this upper room?
- 12:50There's no reference to them in the text, but that is normal for
- 12:53that time and age. I think Kent Brown, a professor
- 12:57at BYU who's written a fabulous commentary on the Gospel of Luke
- 13:01from the BYU Commentary series with Eric Huntsman's translation
- 13:05of the new of the text here from the Greek that I'd encourage you
- 13:08all to read. Kent Brown lines up all the
- 13:11reasons why the women were there and and he's convinced me.
- 13:17Of course they had to be there. You think ourselves run around
- 13:19and do all the work. Absolutely not.
- 13:22The women were there, you know they wouldn't be eating at that
- 13:25same table. Women and men did not eat
- 13:27together unless you were closely related family.
- 13:29But knowing how the Lord worked, I would not be surprised if he
- 13:34invited them. They come out of the kitchen,
- 13:36out of the room or the rooftop where they were cooking and and
- 13:40preparing. They were the ones preparing the
- 13:43unleavened bread. They were the ones preparing the
- 13:45meal for hours. You can't just walk in and have
- 13:48a meal ready without work. And remember, the women are
- 13:52those who are the servants and slaves in that category of that
- 13:55day and age. And and even though they're
- 13:58wealthy women, even though they're paying for the Lord's
- 14:00mission, that is their socio economic role at that time in
- 14:04both the Greco Roman world and the Judaic world, more so in the
- 14:08Judaic world than the Greco Roman.
- 14:10But remember, our Savior taught multiple times in multiple
- 14:13gospels. I am among you as one who
- 14:17serves. And just stepping back and
- 14:22looking at the whole Roman Empire, 1/3 of the population
- 14:26are in that category of servants or slaves, and half of big
- 14:31cities. So half of Rome is living in
- 14:33servitude, half of Jerusalem is living in servitude.
- 14:37And so the idea that women and children do slaves work should
- 14:42not be surprising to us. The most interesting part for me
- 14:46about this socioeconomic period is that even disciples, did the
- 14:50slaves work for their master teacher.
- 14:52You know, they would help him get dressed, they would help him
- 14:54brush his hair, they would help him eat.
- 14:56They would pull the meat off the bones.
- 14:58But a disciple was not allowed to wash his master's feet.
- 15:02That was absolutely forbidden. It was too horrific, too
- 15:06demeaning. And that's why Peter goes crazy
- 15:11when the Lord takes off his outer cloak, puts on an apron,
- 15:16and does the work of a servant. And Peter is corrected by the
- 15:21Lord and humbly changes his heart like that and allows
- 15:26himself to learn the lesson that our Savior is teaching, that
- 15:31masters have got to serve to be a master like our Savior, to be
- 15:39a master teacher, to be a leader in His Kingdom, to be in His
- 15:44shoes. We must learn how to serve each
- 15:48other and wash each other's feet.
- 15:51I think that message would have rung so true to the women who
- 15:55were often assigned the task of washing the filthy, bleeding,
- 16:01calloused feet. Mark says the Son of Man did not
- 16:05come to be served, but to serve. And so the Last Supper rolls on
- 16:12and the story is known. Well, I just want to emphasize
- 16:15the parts that the women were participating in, the bread that
- 16:19Jesus broke to introduce the sacrament that appears to be
- 16:23part of the Judaic Seder, Alpha Coleman, that you hide it and it
- 16:27represents the hidden Messiah who made that bread.
- 16:32This is the women. The women made that bread.
- 16:35I feel like they are taking the role of of an assist in a
- 16:38basketball game. You know, they are taking the
- 16:40role of someone who prepares the way so that everything can run
- 16:43smoothly. They are probably the ones also
- 16:46who diluted the wine to three to 1, three parts water, one part
- 16:50wine. They are probably the ones who
- 16:53are doing all this work so that the Savior then can teach it.
- 16:57My favorite teachings at the Last Supper.
- 17:00In John's beautiful account in chapter 15, verse 5, the Lord
- 17:05describes Himself as a vine. And you disciples, men, women,
- 17:11and children bond free. Anyone who loves the Lord is a
- 17:16branch. And if we can always remember
- 17:19Him, we can receive His strength to produce His fruit.
- 17:25It's just a beautiful thing. I hope the women got to hear the
- 17:29intercessory prayer, but even if they didn't, John recorded it
- 17:34and it could have been passed on to the Saints over the years so
- 17:38that this Christian disciples would have known the Lord
- 17:42prayed. I come unto the Holy Father,
- 17:46keep through thine own name those whom thou has given me,
- 17:51that they may be one, as we are one.
- 17:55The Lord love these women. He called them as His first
- 18:00witnesses, and I think they are included in this intercessory
- 18:03prayer. I think the women probably slept
- 18:06the night in that upper Chamber of that upper room.
- 18:09I don't know if that meant it was on the upper city over.
- 18:12It meant it was upstairs. But whatever the situation is,
- 18:16the Greek is a little ambiguous. The apostles and the Lord went
- 18:20down to the Mount of Olives, and according to John's Gospel, they
- 18:23crossover the Kidron, the winter flowing Little River there, to
- 18:28an orchard where there is an olive press.
- 18:32That's why it's called Gethsemane.
- 18:34It's an olive press right there. There are probably grapevines
- 18:37there as well. And as our Savior had to suffer
- 18:42from the pains of the world, He was pressed as an olive was.
- 18:49And as the word Christ means the word anointed One or Messiah.
- 18:53Messiah He is producing that night as He is suffering for our
- 18:59sins, the anointing that not only He was anointed by the
- 19:03Father, but He must produce his form of anointing for those
- 19:09people that come unto him, that receive Him, that become
- 19:14Christians or anointed ones. I really appreciate each
- 19:20different gospels account. Mark describes the horrific
- 19:25torture of falling to the ground and Matthew falling on his face.
- 19:30Mark says ABBA father, all things are possible.
- 19:36Whereas Luke has the Lord maintained dignity.
- 19:41He calls unto his Father for help, and in response to that
- 19:45prayer, the Lord sends him an Angel.
- 19:49And I believe that when we too are in agony and we pray more
- 19:54earnestly, we too will receive angelic ministrations as he did.
- 20:00But my favorite account is in the Doctrine Covenants first
- 20:04person. The Lord is talking to Martin
- 20:07Harris about the importance of repentance and he describes.
- 20:11Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all,
- 20:16to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and
- 20:20suffer both body and spirit and wood, that I might not drink the
- 20:23bitter cup and shrink. Nevertheless, glory be to the
- 20:29Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto
- 20:34the children of men. Even looking back on that Elder
- 20:38Holland describes he had to pause and couldn't go forward.
- 20:43He pled before the Father, and yet the evening continued in
- 20:49horrific torture of scourging and looking forward to the
- 20:54humiliation and pain of the crucifixion.
- 21:00Even though he was so weak he could not carry his own
- 21:03crossbeam, he still sees women crying for him and he
- 21:08acknowledges their need. And he says, Daughters of
- 21:12Jerusalem, weep not for me. And who is near him at the
- 21:18crucifixion? Not the 12th.
- 21:21John the Beloved is the only disciple there beside these
- 21:25Galilean women. We know his mother was there
- 21:29because they have a conversation, and we know of
- 21:32others because they're listed. In fact, I've made a chart of
- 21:36the women mentioned it, both the cross and the tomb.
- 21:39And as you look at Matthew's accounts of both those women and
- 21:42Mark and Luke and John, it's consistent that Mary of Magdala
- 21:47is there. Mary the mother of James and
- 21:50Josie is there. There's another Mary there.
- 21:54Luke includes Joanna, wife of Chuza, and our wonderful John
- 22:00includes Jesus's mother was there.
- 22:04We also have the mother of Zebedee there.
- 22:06Now it appears in Mark's gospel that her name is Salome.
- 22:12Now maybe Salome was just one of these other women, but Salome is
- 22:15the mother of John and and so I and James and and wife of
- 22:19Zebedee. So I assume that she is a
- 22:21significant person, and I wonder if she is listed as Jesus's
- 22:27mother's sister. And the reason why I say that is
- 22:30in John's gospel, he never mentions his own name, he never
- 22:34mentions the name of Mary, and Jesus's mother always calls her
- 22:39respectful titles. And then he's not mentioning
- 22:43Jesus's mother's sister's name. Could it possibly be his own
- 22:47mother? And he lives in a culture where
- 22:50the name of the Lord is never mentioned.
- 22:52Could he, out of respect, not be mentioning Jesus's mother and
- 22:57his own mother? And could John the Beloved be
- 23:00Jesus's first cousin? This is a very interesting chart
- 23:04to look at, and I have everything written up on my hand
- 23:06out as well about it if you'd like to take a more look.
- 23:09As you know, they were preparing for a high holy day.
- 23:12And in John's Gospel this is a Thursday, and some of the other
- 23:16translations of John 1931, you see that they have to take him
- 23:20off the cross, because it is on the eve of the Passover, and
- 23:26then the next day is the Sabbath.
- 23:27So they cannot do work for two days.
- 23:30But these women that assist Joseph of Arimathea in the tomb
- 23:35and and Nicodemus's servants who have all come to carry the body
- 23:40of our Lord and to bring the spices.
- 23:43It says 100 lbs in King James, but the pound then was only 12
- 23:46ounces. So it was about 75 lbs of spices
- 23:49and ointments. But those women hurry back after
- 23:53they've begun helping the servants in the preparation.
- 23:56After they know that the Lord is being buried in a tomb close by
- 23:59this main road, a garden setting that's close by the where the
- 24:05crucifixion took place, they hurry back to be in their own
- 24:09places before sunset, before the Passover begins.
- 24:14But it is so ironic to me that as thousands and thousands and
- 24:19hundreds of thousands of people are possibly walking up this
- 24:24main road during the crucifixion up to the Temple Mount to
- 24:27receive their lambs for their Passover.
- 24:30That night they are passing by our Passover, the Lamb of God,
- 24:36whom Nephi mentions I think like 45 times or something, the name
- 24:41of the Savior as the Lamb of God.
- 24:43But these diligent women wait until the end of the second
- 24:48Sabbath so that the Savior is in the tomb for three days and part
- 24:52of three nights before they come.
- 24:55But it is still dark, we're told, when they tiptoe back and
- 24:59they retrace their steps. I'm sure it was extremely
- 25:03dangerous and extremely scary, especially as they came down the
- 25:07main road and could have seen the places where those
- 25:11crucifixion polls were. I'm sure they remembered the
- 25:13sounds of the smells from three days before.
- 25:17I'm sure they comforted each other.
- 25:19But remember, they're heavily veiled and it's dark.
- 25:22But when they get there and they realize that an earthquake
- 25:26happens, the roll, the stone has rolled away by angels, and they
- 25:30see angels inside. They also have witnesses.
- 25:34Come and invite them, come and see, and then they are
- 25:39commissioned by divine angels. Go quickly and tell the
- 25:45apostles. Remember, in the book of Matthew
- 25:47the word for disciple is always apostles.
- 25:50And those women have seen the empty tomb, and they joyously go
- 25:54back and express this statement, that the angels have told them
- 25:59He has risen. But our beloved Mary of Magdala
- 26:02cannot leave. And the Savior comes to her,
- 26:07calling her by name and introducing her as the first
- 26:12witness of His resurrection. Matthew's Gospel says as the
- 26:17women were leaving that the Savior also came to them.
- 26:21And he tells them, do not be afraid, but go and tell my
- 26:26brethren, you know, this was a completely opposed in the
- 26:30ancient Scriptures, women were not allowed to bear witness.
- 26:34And at the time of the New Testament, when the oral laws
- 26:36are dictating this, women could not be a voice in a court of
- 26:40law. But the Savior is trying to cut
- 26:44away. He's making a dramatic departure
- 26:47from this cultural inaccuracy, and he is calling these women to
- 26:51not only witness, but to testify.
- 26:54And these women have the spirit of prophecy.
- 26:56And the Lord then called the women throughout the rest of the
- 26:59New Testament to be His witnesses, to bear his name.
- 27:04And the same has happened now. He is calling women to become
- 27:08priestesses and prophetesses and to raise their voice to testify
- 27:14of knowing that Jesus is the Christ.
- 27:17And I would like to add my voice with these great women, that He
- 27:20is our Savior, He is our Redeemer.
- 27:23And Hosanna, hosanna to the Son of God, on this glorious Easter
- 27:28season, may we humbly bend our knee and bow our head and follow
- 27:33his example to come, not to be served, but to serve in the name
- 27:39of Jesus Christ, Amen.
