- 0:45Thank you so much. Joni I've previously from Apple
- 0:49and Sam Altman of Open AI are currently designing something
- 0:54interesting. Now Joni I've one of the
- 0:57absolute best industrial designers used to work at Apple.
- 1:00All the products that we use now, iPhones, iPads, everything
- 1:04had Joni's handprints on it, and his ideas are amazing.
- 1:09And the way that he designs things absolutely brilliantly.
- 1:12Sam Altman of Open AI, great business person, very
- 1:15intellectual person. Open AI is revolutionizing the
- 1:18way that we use AI in every single facet of society.
- 1:22And they're building something together.
- 1:23They're trying to secure a billion dollars in funding for
- 1:27this venture. Now this is wild, but they aim
- 1:30to develop an AI integrated personal device.
- 1:33It's going to have very distinct design and functionality is
- 1:36going to be similar to smartphones that we have now.
- 1:39Now the Information broke this story and they said that in 2023
- 1:43after the initial disclosure from the information that
- 1:45they're working on something. We don't have many specifics
- 1:48right now. It's all undisclosed, it's all
- 1:50behind closed doors and there's curiosity about its design and
- 1:53capabilities too. The developments have been under
- 1:56discussion since 2023, I think increasing momentum towards
- 2:00actualizing of the concept. Right now, the collaboration
- 2:03between I've and Altman combines significant expertise in design
- 2:08and AI, suggesting hopefully a new groundbreaking product is on
- 2:12the horizon. Now we've seen similar designs
- 2:15to the iPhone. Almost every smartphone now
- 2:18looks very similar to an iPhone. And that's because Johnny Joni,
- 2:22I've sorry I keep saying Johnny, but Joni, I've was way ahead of
- 2:25the curve here. But Joni and Sam have engaged
- 2:28with several potential investors right now to reach their
- 2:31substantial funding target, a billion dollars.
- 2:33They're going to hire the greatest minds in AI and design
- 2:37and engineering to come together and build this amazing device,
- 2:41whatever it is. And their discussions have
- 2:43included Thrive Capital, known for its investments, repeat
- 2:46investments, mind you in Open AI, and Emerson Collective
- 2:49established by Lorene Powell Jobs Now These talks indicate a
- 2:53broad search for financial backing to support the ventures
- 2:56ambitious goals that Joni Ive is behind it.
- 2:59Something spectacular is on the horizon.
- 3:01The potential for something spectacular is on the horizon.
- 3:03We don't know how this thing is going to turn out.
- 3:05Also SoftBank, a CEO of SoftBank is another prominent figure in
- 3:09the tech sector and it's possibly interested in investing
- 3:13in this new format for interacting with yourself, your
- 3:18data, the environment. We don't know what this thing is
- 3:21yet, though this is all speculation.
- 3:22The involvement of the CEO from SoftBank suggests a possible
- 3:25link to ARM ARM microprocessors. It's a company that he supports.
- 3:30It's high profile nature of this endeavor is if they get a chip
- 3:33company on board, they're going to do something absolutely
- 3:35amazing. If they can do custom chips,
- 3:37that's probably why they need the billion dollars too.
- 3:38They have to go through all the engineering to make prototypes
- 3:41and the whole gambit of things they have to run through.
- 3:44And not just alpha software, but beta software and also full
- 3:47release software. But also they have to do a lot
- 3:50of testing with the hardware and the software together to make
- 3:53sure everything functions very well.
- 3:55And they have to keep it at a price point that people would
- 3:57actually buy out. Yeah, right now an iPhone is
- 4:00around a, let's say, 700 to $1000.
- 4:03And if this device is similar to the iPhone, like what it can
- 4:07accomplish? Check your e-mail, listen to
- 4:09music. What are the normal things that
- 4:11you do every day? Check maps, get an Uber and get
- 4:14food delivered to you? Whatever it is, if this device
- 4:16can do that and it's smaller than iPhone, you don't have to
- 4:18take it out of your pocket. It's clipped to you somewhere.
- 4:21Or maybe it's a ring. I don't know.
- 4:22And it I don't know what it is and we have no idea.
- 4:24Nobody really knows. Then would you buy it for 700
- 4:28dollars, $800? That's an ambitious goal for a
- 4:30price, but there's a possibility that it could be around that
- 4:34price. If it's a small device and it
- 4:36could do things that are similar to an iPhone but doesn't have
- 4:38the capabilities of a screen, isn't worth that much money,
- 4:40though. You have to think about that
- 4:41too. But they want to raise a billion
- 4:43dollars, build the chips, build the software.
- 4:45You need bright people to do all of those things and managing the
- 4:48company and AI everything. So let's go back to the
- 4:51information. If you're not familiar with the
- 4:53information is they break a lot of tech stories and they have
- 4:56people on the inside. They know everybody in Silicon
- 4:58Valley. They have some insiders that
- 5:01come through with some very reputable information.
- 5:04That's why they're called The Information now.
- 5:06They say that the device excused traditional designs, potentially
- 5:09offering a novel user experience.
- 5:11They're looking into screenless interfaces.
- 5:14Sam Altman wants to have creative, intuitive, less
- 5:19distracting technology, and I think Joni, I've was on the
- 5:23precipice of something. Let's not talk about the Apple
- 5:26Pencil, though. Can we?
- 5:27Or the way that the Apple mouse charges?
- 5:29Let's not talk about those two things.
- 5:30Those are horrible, horrible designs.
- 5:32I don't know if Joni, I've had anything to do with that, but if
- 5:34he did, Joni, you did a horrible thing to humanity for
- 5:37introducing those two ways of charging things, The way to
- 5:40charge an Apple Pencil and the way to charge an Apple mouse.
- 5:42Horrible designs. But this new design hopefully
- 5:45screen this interface and it's going to be very intuitive.
- 5:48It's going to be very novel. It's supposed to leverage open
- 5:51AI's ChatGPT or some version of that or some sort of something
- 5:55with the large language model. And they're going to be
- 5:57integrating advanced AI capabilities with this device
- 6:00now. Between I've designed prowess
- 6:02and Altman's AI expertise, they could redefine personal
- 6:05computing devices. Think about how much money Apple
- 6:07makes just from iPhone sales and software sales.
- 6:10I've's previous contributions to Apple's iconic products in his
- 6:13post Apple venture love form show that he has a deep
- 6:16commitment to innovation in design and functionality, even
- 6:19though he's been gone from Apple for a long time now.
- 6:22And the project's ambition is evident in the recruitment of
- 6:25Tank Tan, a former Apple executive, to lead Hardware
- 6:28Engineering. Now, this venture's commitment
- 6:30to high quality design and engineering could draw upon
- 6:34Tan's experience with Apple's product lineup.
- 6:37They have to the right people, in the right places, doing the
- 6:39right things in order to produce an amazing device that people
- 6:43would actually want to use and wear.
- 6:45Now, there's an ongoing debate, though, about the role of AI in
- 6:48enhancing productivity while minimizing distractions.
- 6:51Previous AI devices have promised efficiency without the
- 6:54pitfalls of conventional smartphones, but real world
- 6:57effectiveness and security concerns remain to be addressed
- 7:00comprehensively. Just hear me out for a moment.
- 7:03If you ask your device that's connected to Open AI to look up
- 7:07somebody's phone number or to give your information, any sort
- 7:10of information, let's just dial it back here.
- 7:12Any sort of information. Do you want Open AI to have your
- 7:15information or do you want it to be encrypted?
- 7:16I would go for encrypted. Nobody needs to know if I'm
- 7:19having one of those nights and I need a pizza at 3:00 in the
- 7:22morning. Nobody needs to know what, like
- 7:24where I go or anything like that.
- 7:26Same with you. I'm sure I'm most people don't
- 7:28really worry about them. That's not.
- 7:29I don't really worry about it, but I don't think a company
- 7:31should have all of my specific data for things that I for where
- 7:34I go and what I do though. I have an iPhone and I'm
- 7:38probably tracked all the time anyway.
- 7:39I have googled Google on my iPhone, so I'm pretty sure ads
- 7:43are being forced to me through Google.
- 7:46Because the things that I say or the things that I search, there
- 7:48are trade-offs. This little device, it's
- 7:51supposed to be smaller than an iPhone, will be able to do all
- 7:53that, I'm not sure. I'm not sure what they'll be
- 7:55able to do, but I'm pretty sure everything will go up to the
- 7:57cloud anyway. They'll be able to process
- 7:58things in the cloud as opposed to on your device.
- 8:01So maybe that's where they're going to be doing their
- 8:02processing. Maybe they're going to have
- 8:03server farms, GPU farms, etcetera that will be handling
- 8:07all this computation. Now the feasibility and the
- 8:09impact of such AI power devices are still under scrutiny though.
- 8:13Nobody's made anything like this before.
- 8:15Questions about their practicality, user experience
- 8:17and data security linger, and that's the challenge for Ivan
- 8:21Altman's project going ahead. There's a lot of problems,
- 8:24actually a lot of things to solve the funding of a billion
- 8:27dollars. With high profile investors like
- 8:29SoftBank, it's potentially significant.
- 8:32In the tech industry. The involvement of such
- 8:34influential figures could shape the project's direction and its
- 8:37technological foundations, particularly with arms potential
- 8:40involvement as well. And the project's conception
- 8:43involving brainstorming Session I of San Francisco Studio
- 8:46indicate a hands on approach to defining the devices, core
- 8:49features and user experience. If you get together with
- 8:51somebody, there's a lot that can be done that you cannot do over
- 8:54Zoom. Real time collaboration in
- 8:56person is a lot different than real time collaboration on Zoom
- 8:59or any other. Their meeting app.
- 9:01I'm glad they met up. I'm glad they can brainstorm
- 9:03traditionally one-on-one or with their team to pound this out
- 9:07because it sounds like an amazing thing and the goal is to
- 9:09develop an intuitive user interface that transcends
- 9:12conventional computing paradigms.
- 9:14Most like the iPhone revolutionized mobile Internet
- 9:17access. If you remember back then phones
- 9:20didn't really have the Internet. And when they did have the
- 9:22Internet it was expensive and it was basic text.
- 9:26There wasn't a lot of websites that were developed.
- 9:29There weren't any apps really, just apps that came with your
- 9:31T-Mobile phone or whatever. But no real apps for the
- 9:34Internet back then, not compared to like now everything has.
- 9:38Every phone has 5000 apps on it. It's a lot different time.
- 9:41And what kind of apps would they use on a small device that they
- 9:45don't really want to interfere with your life?
- 9:46We'll see. We'll see in the future.
- 9:48But this project is still in his formative stages of course, with
- 9:51various ideas being considered the complexity of creating a new
- 9:54device category. This is everything.
- 9:56It's a whole new thing. Means that the venture might
- 9:58take years to materialize into a market ready product and this
- 10:01could be a long term vision behind this initiative.
- 10:04Ivy's concerns about the addictive nature of smartphones
- 10:06and their unintended consequences have been well
- 10:09documented. That's why he's going forth with
- 10:10this venture. This project with open AI offers
- 10:13a chance to address these issues.
- 10:14But developing a less screen dependent method of interaction
- 10:17potentially mitigating some of the negative aspects of modern
