- 0:01The Electrical Show with Thomas Naji sponsored by Boss Professional, Powerful power Tools Talk
- 0:06for measuring tools and experts Accessories. Welcome to the Electrical Show with Bosh Professional
- 0:16here on Fixed Radio. I'm Thomas Naji, and over the course of the
- 0:19next hour we are going to be talking to some fellow electricians about how they
- 0:24approach their exercise and diet in the trade. So sort of a follow on
- 0:29from last week's episode. Now Paul is not going to be following them because
- 0:33he isn't here today. He's off i think this week and possibly next week
- 0:37as well, so he will be back as soon as he can. So
- 0:40I'm going solo today now. I'm interested going back to health and fitness,
- 0:45this exercise and diet shenanigans. I am interested to find out what people are
- 0:49eating during their days out on site because, as we know, being in
- 0:53the trade, you in the van a lot and by default you do end
- 0:57up eating a lot of fast food unless you are prepared enough that you make
- 1:00it at home before you go out in the morning. So yeah, we're
- 1:04going to be talking about that in this hour, and if we can try
- 1:07and fit some exercise into it even better. Fix Radio time to crack On.
- 1:14I'm Thomas Naji and on today's electrical show, I am asking electricians about
- 1:18their approach to diet and exercise. Now, if you've just tuned in,
- 1:22don't worry with just getting started, and we're going to get started with Danny
- 1:26Webb, known as Sparking Milan on social media. Now, Danny, thank
- 1:30you very much for joining us. It's you've actually been on a little while
- 1:34bag, so it's good to hear your voice again, sir, no problem,
- 1:37Thanks for having me back on. When Jack sprung me up to come
- 1:40on, I thought he was mocking me with the discussion we're about to talk
- 1:42about. Apparently, Yeah, give us some background age, how fit you'd
- 1:49say you are, Give us a little bit of background. I'm forty two
- 1:53now I would say generally I'm quite fit, but recently, where work's got
- 1:57so busy, I've got a little bit out of shape. But I mean
- 2:01that's how it is in this trade. I feel for ye. Life has
- 2:07been very kind. Life has been very kind to your face because you don't
- 2:10look forward to to on Instagram, that is for sure. But that's because
- 2:15I think it's because I tried to take the diet seriously. And I do
- 2:19think what you're put in your body does help, so for sure. Yeah.
- 2:23Best. So how about exercise off the tools do you actually do?
- 2:27Do you do stuff like gym or is that like a wishful thought? Do
- 2:31you know what? Only until recently I started slowing down on that. So
- 2:35when I lived down South, as I've said on the show before, I've
- 2:38moved recently up to the Midlands for work, I had a gym built in
- 2:42my garden. I was doing kind of what I've seen you do online,
- 2:46you know, the Olympic weights, free weights, no machines really, so
- 2:50I like things like deadlift squats, you know, pull ups, all things
- 2:54like that, things that your body weight as well. So I did a
- 2:58lot of that. But as I'm getting old, you know, the recovery
- 3:01time is so difficult, you know, you've got to really plan, you
- 3:06Like, I could hit the gym hard if i know I'm doing the ICs
- 3:08a week. If I've got a first week coming up, I can't do
- 3:13it. So it's difficult. Yeah. Yeah, what about eating? How
- 3:17about diet wise? Whats because it is difficult as a tradesman, especially if
- 3:21you're in your van all day going from job to job. It is a
- 3:23challenge. How do you find it? Because you you you're pretty healthy eater,
- 3:27aren't you, So you do must You probably do a lot of pre
- 3:30pre work for food. Yes, that's it. Yeah, it's prep I
- 3:35mean, I mean my partner is very good at that, so she preps
- 3:38a lot of like decent lunches and salads and bits and pieces fruit salad.
- 3:45So we try and make sure we're really well prepared. Don't always go to
- 3:49plan, of course. But the biggest thing. I'm a massive believer is
- 3:52fasting. And I will fast generally obviously from the last thing that of at
- 3:58night, all the way through the morning, and I'll try to get to
- 4:00twelve one o'clock because I'm far more productive when I've not got food makes me
- 4:05sluggish and sleepy, so I can't get as much done. And yeah,
- 4:11obviously by doing that fasting, your body's attacking your fat cells for energy,
- 4:15so it's like a double wind really, And then I'll eat more later,
- 4:19all right, So you literally you won't eat anything so sort of mid day,
- 4:24Yeah, try not to. It doesn't always go to plans, you
- 4:26know what. Sometimes you wake up for some reason you're absolutely starving. But
- 4:30generally, if that's the case, I'll have like a protein shape or something
- 4:33so something's still a bit healthy, or a blended up smoothie something like that
- 4:39to keep me going. But certainly not the old days where I'll come from
- 4:43in ethics when I was growing up, the gut buster breakfast. I don't
- 4:46do anything like that anymore. But you think that that for you, that
- 4:48really benefits. Yeah, yeah, it really benefits. Like if you ask
- 4:54anybody that works with me in the morning, I just shut up. I'm
- 4:59focused, and I'll just I treat it like a little bit of a cardio
- 5:01session up down a ladder or whatever it is you do. I'm trying to
- 5:04do it really quick to film my heart going. And then I know when
- 5:10I get home, I don't really have to go to the gym because I've
- 5:12burnt a lot of calories while i was at work. Huh. I mean,
- 5:15I've heard of people doing fast, but I've never heard of it.
- 5:16That's interesting. Before we go, because we're running out of time, a
- 5:20bit of advice or any sort of top tips you'd give for a listener that
- 5:24have just anything in your world, A top tip you think for exercise,
- 5:30the top tip is like you sort of touched on. It's planning, isn't
- 5:32it. If you don't plan I've been there a million times as well.
- 5:35You're starting hungry and you just stop off at the space or something like that
- 5:40and you get a sausage roll, you know, a crappy sandwich. If
- 5:43you plan it and you put the time into planning, you're going to eat
- 5:46healthy. But it's not always that easy for everybody. People come home absolutely
- 5:49kna good and you might not want to prep food, but if you do,
- 5:54you're going to be healthier. The Electrical Show Thursday from three and catch
- 5:59up any time at Fixradio dot co dot uk the builders station Fix Radio.
- 6:04You're listening to the Electrical Show with none other than Bosh Professional here on Fix
- 6:10Radio and today if you've just tuned in, we are midway. Our trainers
- 6:14pulled out the station. It's rumbling down the tracks and we've been talking about
- 6:16diet and exercise as an electrician. Now, as you know, Paul Meanan
- 6:21isn't here. He's decided to go out and earn some money, as if
- 6:25that's more important than being here. I don't know, I don't know what
- 6:28the world's coming to, but I'm sure, he's listening to it driving up
- 6:30the motorway wherever he is. Paul, Hello. So we're going to take
- 6:34this opportunity because normally in this link me and Paul, by this time,
- 6:38we'd be throwing pop shots and you know, cheap shots at each other about
- 6:41health and exercise and how little we do. So I'm going to take this
- 6:45opportunity to reflect on how I approach diet and exercise instead. So unless Jack
- 6:49the producer wants to answer them, which I don't think he wants to,
- 6:53which means it's just going to be me. So the first one is how
- 6:56fit would you say you are? It's a funny question because initially when I
- 7:02before I actually started going to the gym, and I had a personal trainer
- 7:05and stuff before I started that, I genuinely considered myself you know, yeah,
- 7:11thirty seven years old, pretty fit, and you know, I'm not
- 7:13amazing. I'm not you know, I'm not David Beckham territory, but I'm
- 7:16pretty fit. I can stay ahead, or so I thought. And my
- 7:20pet started my first day in the gym August fifteenth, August fourteenth, think
- 7:25it was. It took me straight to the dips machine. So anybody's been
- 7:28to the gym, you know, dips like hell on Earth, the horrible
- 7:30things. He just took me to a dip and he just he demonstrated a
- 7:33dip and I can't really it's too difficult to describe over the eight you'd have
- 7:36to google it. But I thought, well, so I've got pretty good
- 7:40upper arm strength, you know, triceps, pretty good? How hard can
- 7:43this be? Couldn't do one? Mate, seriously, Like it was really
- 7:46embarrassing, Like, but you the thing is, you go in with this
- 7:49sort of mental thing that you're you're pretty good, you know you're ahead of
- 7:55the game, better than average, and you're actually not. You realize how
- 8:00actually, how underfit you are. Three months later, I'm pretty good at
- 8:05them. I'm not an expert, but I'm a hell of a lot better
- 8:07now. I can I can bop out like sixty seventy dips before I've had
- 8:11enough. Like so it's you've got a train to get there. But it
- 8:13is amazing, like how how sort of muscle orientated you think you are and
- 8:18actually you're not? So yeah, next question when it comes to exercise,
- 8:22what do you try to do off the tools? Again? It is Jim,
- 8:24I do it four times a week and it is a big commitment and
- 8:28it is it's hard work. I won't lie do Mondays, Mondays, Wednesdays,
- 8:31Thursday, Fridays. So it's two hours a session, and let me
- 8:35tell you, he beasts you for that two hours. Like I mean,
- 8:37it's literally like training two failure. So it's you just go, you do
- 8:41one, you do one excise, so dips, for instance, you do
- 8:45that, you do it for you know, twenty minutes. So basically until
- 8:48you try sets are burnt out and you literally you just you reached muscular failure
- 8:52and then you just move on and you go and do some cable exercise or
- 8:56whatever. But I've been doing that, yeah, about three months now.
- 9:00But there was no particular it wasn't a goal as such. It was just
- 9:03I just felt like I wanted to do it. But diet wise, that
- 9:07was the next question. Diet what do you eat and drink throughout the day?
- 9:11That is a tricky one. I don't have a specific diet, so
- 9:16I will say that a PT is worth every penny. That is absolutely worth
- 9:20it. Because one of the things I'll do is I'll give you what's called
- 9:22your macros, your daily intake your nutritional intake. And it is really good
- 9:26because you can try and follow you don't have to follow it one hundred percent.
- 9:28But when you start tapping into like so for instance, I say like
- 9:33I need two seven hundred calories a day. That's what we worked out too,
- 9:37those seven hundred calories seventy grams of fat. Which actually that's the hard
- 9:41part. It's not exceeding seventy grams of fat. That's really tough if you
- 9:45actually weigh up, like you go to this is the thing. You go
- 9:46to a petrol stage and you buy a sausage roll. I'm telling you now,
- 9:48there's about thirty grams of fat in that sausage roll. You'd be amazed
- 9:52how much fat is in everything around you. So the hard part is cutting
- 9:56fat out of the diet. So normally the way that I tend to do
- 10:01it is I'll go to the unit first thing. I'll be in the unit
- 10:03by sort of five thirty in the morning somewhere around there. I'll have protein
- 10:07in the morning with some like protein granola fuel, I think it's called.
- 10:11That's quite a tasty on if you want to buy some. So I normally
- 10:13have that and that will keep me going comfortably until about midday. So it's
- 10:18actually different from the way our first calling guest, Danny Milan, so he
- 10:22doesn't eat till twelve. I do it the opposite. I eat first thing
- 10:24in the morning. But it's just how everyone's diet is different. This is
- 10:26the way that if I don't eat in the morning, I'm just a grumbly,
- 10:31irritable bear. I have no fun to be around, so I have
- 10:33to have something to eat. But yeah, I have that in the morning,
- 10:37and that keeps me until about sort of midday, sometimes two o'clock if
- 10:41I have a big serving in the morning, and then I'll just have something
- 10:45else once to get back to the unit. But the big thing is not
- 10:48trying to eat crap during the day. That's the hard part, because it's
- 10:50so tempting to go to a garage or something and just you have a sandwich,
- 10:54a sausage roll or a pasty cornish pasty that's straight up sixty grams of
- 10:58fat right there. Like it's trying to stop that. So and it's really
- 11:01difficult because you fill up with fuel and you go in it smells so nice,
- 11:05especially if you go to BP ones and stuff. They smell really good.
- 11:07So it's trying to stop that. So yeah, next question, what
- 11:11do you find most challenging and why staying fit or eating well? Eating well
- 11:16is not too bad that it is a bit challenging. Like I've just explained,
- 11:18the staying fit part is the hard part because it it requires constant work.
- 11:24You know, you've got to do it whether you whether you want to
- 11:26do it or not. If you don't feel like it, you've still got
- 11:30to go. You've just you've got to do it. And it's all right.
- 11:31It's just sometimes when you get back from work and it's you know,
- 11:35the last thing you want to do is turn around and go back out to
- 11:37go to the gym. But once you're there, it's all right, and
- 11:39it's you actually build a fantastic circle of networking people at the gym, friends
- 11:46and stuff, little gym bros and stuff, and it really is good fun.
- 11:48So once you get into it, it gets easier. And that's probably
- 11:52the biggest thing I'd say to take away from it. Once you start it,
- 11:56the first like two weeks is just hell on earth because you just ache
- 12:00everywhere. And once you've passed that bit, it does get easier and easier.
- 12:03So it's worth, it's worth staying with it. And as soon as
- 12:05you start seeing muscle and gains it does it's quite satisfying, so it's definitely
- 12:09worth doing. Yeah. Last question, what would you like to improve with
- 12:13regards to your diet and exercise? I would like to meal prep, but
- 12:16I just can't be bothered. It's just nah, it's time. I haven't
- 12:20got time. I'm sat here in orange clothing. I didn't have time to
- 12:24change, so I'm not going to be able to fit meal prep in.
- 12:26There's just no way. Fixed radio. This is the Electrical Show and Thomas
- 12:31Naji asking electricians to join me today to discuss their approach to diet and exercise.
- 12:37Now joining me, Now we have another electrician, Ian Beddingfield, who's
- 12:41been on the show a couple of times. Now, Ian, welcome back
- 12:43and set in the tone for us. How old are you and how fit?
- 12:48Would you say you are? In layman terms? So I'm in my
- 12:52forties forty two and I would say I'm physically fit, athletic, athletic.
- 13:00Okay, good, good start? What about what about which I was saying
- 13:05that an insulting way is a good thing? What would you say is the
- 13:07most sort of challenging thing about getting out there and doing the exercise. Or
- 13:13do you feel that you get enough exercise through your job, Because a lot
- 13:16of some contractors do get enough through their job, so because you need a
- 13:20lot of physical dexterity for it. So are you one of those? Or
- 13:22do you do exercise outside the outside of your working hours? Well, I'm
- 13:28one of those that probably makes my job more physical than I need to in
- 13:31the sense that I'll be the one with a short ladder and jumping up in
- 13:35the last pulling myself up rather than getting a longer ladder. And I mean
- 13:39our job as physical as it is, so I see that as a physical
- 13:45a physical day anyway. All right. The main question diet, How good
- 13:50or bad? Are we saying it is bad? I love the answer,
- 13:56it's good. I like it good, good, good. What does it
- 14:00you find though? Is it the difficulty? Is it the convenience of fast
- 14:03food on the go, or how is it for you being one of those
- 14:07that's up and out the door. Mine would be not so much the fast
- 14:11food, but the convenience of being able to get it a garage shop wherever.
- 14:16I'm an energy drink drink car and sometimes I can go through a day
- 14:20and not eat at all because I just get way laid into it. You
- 14:26know, some days you're bad. Yeah, I mean there is truth in
- 14:28that, because I also find the same thing, like if you're if you're
- 14:31in the zone on a job, to stop and then to actually stop and
- 14:35have lunch is sometimes it's it's almost like a laborious task because once you've had
- 14:39it, you struggle to get back. You struggle, I mean you struggle
- 14:43to get back into the zone in what you were doing. So you just
- 14:46kind of plow through. But obviously you use energy drinks to plow through by
- 14:50the same by the sound of it, don't feel for me that is,
- 14:54once you have lunch, it's like that, I don't want to carry on.
- 14:58I'm done now. Yeah, it's finding that motivation. I was going
- 15:03to say, what are the sort of the worst habits that you've got when
- 15:05it comes to diet, But I'm guessing energy drinks, so your one.
- 15:09Yeah, definitely energy drinks and not making a suitable lunch really in the morning,
- 15:13which I should be doing. Yeah, time is it is are the
- 15:18time constraints that you find? It's just I mean, I think for a
- 15:20lot of people who live in London where it's just so on the go that
- 15:22that is a genuine issue. It's just finding the time. I mean,
- 15:26some people say that's not an excuse, but I actually think it is because
- 15:28it is just it's finding the time to get up and be to have the
- 15:33time and the effort and the energy to actually do meal prep and stuff.
- 15:37It is just for a lot of people, it's just a ball lake.
- 15:39Yeah, definitely. I mean I've even died, like between jobs. You
- 15:43think I just grab a sandwich on the go kind of thing. But even
- 15:46then driving around if you're doing short distance and trying to multitasking and say you
- 15:52can't do it. Yeah, it's you know, if you're out in the
- 15:54sticks and you're working London or close to jobs, it's just not possible.
- 16:00Yeah. Yeah, all right. Well finally, because we're running out of
- 16:03time, what would you change if you had to make one change to your
- 16:07diet or maybe an approach to like exercise or something. What would you like
- 16:11to do if you had the opportunity. Mine would be make a decent lunge
- 16:15in the morning, something that's not going to weigh you down, the eat
- 16:19quick on the go or it's there rather than stopping grabbing something, you know,
- 16:26even costwise, it's goldn't be cheaper making it yourself, and it is
- 16:29for sure in the garage. Yeah, all right, well, I hope
- 16:33you managed to find the time to do it. Ian, it's been a
- 16:36pleasure to have you on. Thank you the Electrical Show on Fixed Radio.
- 16:41That's it for today's Electrical Show with me Thomas Naji, mister mean and do
- 16:45you have any final words you'd like to say? I can. I'm sort
- 16:48of telepathically talking to him because I can guarantee he's listening in a car somewhere
- 16:52and he's saying something and he's just said, nope, there's no other business.
